More money in your pocket: A tax break for all Canadians and the Working Canadians Rebate
Canadians feeling the financial strain of rising costs and stretched budgets will soon see some relief. This week, the federal government announced two major initiatives aimed at helping households: a GST/HST exemption on everyday essentials and a onetime Working Canadians Rebate.
Starting December 14, 2024, Canadians will benefit from a temporary tax break on a variety of goods, including:
● Prepared foods like salads and sandwiches.
● Restaurant meals, whether dine-in, takeout, or delivery.
● Snacks, children’s clothing, toys, and Christmas trees.
Even beverages under 7% alcohol by volume, such as beer and cider, will be tax-free. The exemption runs until February 15, 2025, offering meaningful savings during the holiday season and into the new year.
In addition, working Canadians who earned up to $150,000 in 2023 will receive a $250 rebate starting in spring 2025. This measure will support 18.7 million Canadians, providing direct relief for middle-class families hit hardest by rising costs.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted the importance of these initiatives, saying, “We can’t control prices, but we can give Canadians more money back in their pockets.”
With the holidays approaching, the timing of these measures couldn’t be better. From buying toys to preparing festive meals, Canadians will have extra room in their budgets to focus on celebrating with family and friends.
The government is urging swift passage of this legislation to ensure families can begin benefiting from these measures.
As Canadians light Christmas trees and share meals this season, these initiatives aim to make life a little easier—helping households afford the things they need and save for the things they want.

House Approves Bill
Encouraging Senior Citizen Employment
MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading House Bill No. 10985, a measure aimed at boosting employment opportunities for senior citizens and waiving government fees for employment-related documents.
The bill, titled "Employment Opportunities for Senior Citizens and Private Entities Incentives," passed with 173 affirmative votes during Tuesday’s plenary session. Authored by Senior Citizens Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes, Apec Rep. Sergio Dagooc, and Bulacan Rep. Salvador Pleyto Sr., the measure seeks to amend Republic Act No. 7432, the Senior Citizens Act of 1992.
If enacted, the law would task the Department of Labor and Employment with providing job-matching services for senior citizens willing and able to work. It also lists potential roles for seniors, including clerical work, consultancy, teaching, sales assistance, event organizing, and roles in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
Private companies hiring senior citizens would receive an additional 25% tax deduction on the total expenses incurred for salaries, benefits, and training. Government agencies would also be barred from charging fees for employment-related documents, such as police clearances or medical certificates, required by senior applicants.
Speaker Martin Romualdez emphasized the importance of empowering seniors, stating, “They deserve opportunities to remain productive post-retirement, especially in roles that are not physically strenuous.”
Lead author Ordanes expressed optimism that the Senate would adopt the measure, calling it a significant step toward recognizing senior citizens' continued contributions to society.
The bill could benefit up to 10 million Filipino seniors, according to Ordanes.
Mary Jane Veloso to Return Home After 14 Years in Indonesian Prison
MANILA, Philippines — As of this writing, Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina domestic worker who has spent 14 years in an Indonesian prison, is set to return to the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced Wednesday.
Veloso was arrested in 2010 for drug trafficking and faced execution in 2015. Her case drew international attention when then-President Benigno Aquino III made a last-minute appeal to Indonesia, leading to a temporary reprieve. Veloso’s execution was delayed after her alleged illegal recruiter surrendered to Philippine authorities.
Diplomatic efforts to secure her release spanned three administrations. Under former President Rodrigo Duterte, conflicting reports emerged about his stance on Veloso’s case, with Indonesia claiming Duterte supported the execution while he publicly denied the claim and stated he sought clemency.
Talks for Veloso’s repatriation gained traction during Marcos' term. In a January meeting with Indonesia’s then-President Joko Widodo, the latter agreed to re-examine her case. Following Widodo's departure and under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia approved Veloso’s return. Marcos expressed gratitude to Subianto and the Indonesian government for their cooperation.
“This outcome reflects the depth of our partnership with Indonesia—united in a shared commitment to justice and compassion,” he said.
Describing Veloso as a victim of poverty and exploitation, Marcos highlighted the decade-long diplomatic campaign to delay her execution and facilitate her return. “We look forward to welcoming Mary Jane home,” he said.
Veloso’s case continues to resonate as a testament to the challenges faced by overseas Filipino workers.
14 Senate Aspirants Challenge ‘Nuisance Candidate’ Tag at COMELEC
MANILA, Philippines — Fourteen senatorial aspirants disqualified by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) as nuisance candidates have filed motions for reconsideration to contest their status, COMELEC Commissioner George Garcia announced Thursday.
The aspirants are among 117 individuals declared as nuisance candidates for the 2025 midterm elections.
The COMELEC based its decision on the Omnibus Election Code, which allows the disqualification of candidates whose intent to run is deemed insincere, aimed at mocking the electoral process, or likely to cause confusion among voters.
The 14 individuals appealing their status include Alexander Cura Encarnacion, Berteni Cataluña Causing, Felipe Fernandez Montealto Jr., Francis Leo Antonio Marcos, and Subair Guinthum Mustapha, among others.
The disqualification recommendation, approved on November 19, stems from the COMELEC’s scrutiny of 183 senatorial aspirants who filed Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) during the October 1-8 filing period. The poll body has also disqualified candidates who fail to demonstrate the capacity to mount a credible campaign or are perceived to disrupt the integrity of the election process.
COMELEC is currently resolving the appeals of these aspirants, as well as those of seven others who first filed motions for reconsideration after the disqualification announcement.
Garcia emphasized that the COMELEC’s efforts aim to ensure the orderly conduct of elections, preventing the process from being undermined. The final list of qualified candidates will be released following the resolution of all pending appeals.

Jason Robertson Returns to Winnipeg for Another Inspiring Meet and Greet
NHL Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson made his return to Winnipeg earlier this month, hosting yet another inspiring meet and greet during the Jets-Stars game at Canada Life Centre. This year’s gathering marked a continuation of efforts to grow hockey’s reach within the Filipino community, building on the success of the inaugural Filipino Heritage Night in 2022.
With more young players and families in attendance, the event showcased how far the community has come in embracing hockey as both a sport and a cultural bridge. Robertson, who proudly represents his Filipino heritage, took time to engage with budding hockey players, sharing advice, signing memorabilia, and fostering a renewed enthusiasm for the game.
Since the first Filipino Heritage Night, participation in hockey among Filipino youth has seen remarkable growth. Programs like the First Shift, Jets Hockey Development camps, and community hockey nights have lowered barriers to entry, making

the sport more accessible to families who once saw it as daunting.
For many attendees, this year’s meet and greet was a meaningful
experience. One parent reflected, “Meeting a Filipino pro-athlete like Jason was very inspiring. The kids now have an idea that there’s room
for Filipinos in the pro league.”
Robertson’s continued involvement underscores the vital role representation plays in breaking
down stereotypes and encouraging diversity in sports. His presence on and off the ice has become a beacon of inspiration, showing Filipino youth that they, too, can excel in a sport traditionally dominated by other cultures.
“To see someone like Jason at this level, excelling and staying connected to his roots, is incredibly motivating for our kids,” another parent shared. “It shows them that hockey can be for everyone.”
The ripple effect of these initiatives has extended beyond the ice. Community events like Filipino Heritage Night have inspired a broader dialogue about inclusion in sports, encouraging other underrepresented communities to engage with hockey.
Local leagues and organizations are now actively working to diversify their programs, creating a more welcoming environment for all.
As hockey continues to grow in popularity among Winnipeg’s Filipino community, the focus remains on sustainability and inclusivity. Robertson’s ongoing support, coupled with initiatives from the NHL, Bauer, and the Jets organization, ensures a bright future for aspiring players.
Jason Robertson’s latest visit to Winnipeg wasn’t just a moment to celebrate—it was a call to action, reminding everyone that hockey is more than a game; it’s a community, and there’s room for everyone.

Reasons to Hope: Manitoba Government’s Vision Outlined in Throne Speech
Manitobans gathered at the legislature alongside community leaders to hear Lt.-Gov. Anita Neville deliver the government’s annual throne speech. With Premier Wab Kinew setting the tone for the event, the speech laid out a vision for the year ahead, focusing on affordability, health care, and economic growth.
“Every day, we measure our success by how much Manitobans are free to pursue a good life,” said Kinew. “The opportunity of a good job to support your family. Knowing that if you work hard, you can afford a home. Health care that’s there when your family needs it. We’re starting to see progress on these important priorities, and we won’t stop working to make life better for all Manitobans.”
The event included a performance of O Canada in Anishinaabemowin by students from Giinawind Riverbend Community School Abinoojiiyag Nagamog, reflecting the government’s commitment to cultural inclusivity.
Key Highlights from the Throne Speech
Entering the second year of its mandate, the government emphasized progress on several fronts while acknowledging that more work remains to be done:
● Health Care Progress: Building on the addition of 870 health-care
workers and new clinics in Winnipeg and Brandon, the government announced plans for an ER wait times strategy, 800 more hip and knee surgeries at Selkirk Regional Health Centre, and rolling out improved plastic health cards by the end of the year.
● Lowering Costs: The government aims to freeze Manitoba Hydro rates for one year while providing relief for renters and homeowners. Efforts to address anti-competitive grocery contracts are expected to
tackle rising food costs.
● Economic Growth: A new critical minerals strategy, an Indigenous loan guarantee program, and infrastructure projects like twinning the TransCanada Highway east are designed to create jobs and drive growth.
● Safer Communities: The Public Safety Strategy will see more police on the streets, mental health workers embedded with first responders, and targeted efforts to remove illegal drugs and weapons.
● Empowering Youth: Initiatives
such as the universal school meal program, updated science curriculums, a Grade 9 financial literacy unit, and ensuring First Nations residents can vote in school board elections aim to support children and families.
● Environmental Sustainability: The Affordable Energy Plan and a new working group to protect Lake Winnipeg underscore the government’s commitment to balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship.
● Transparency and Heritage: The government will launch an inquiry into the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters project and establish an all-party committee to examine the future of local journalism. A planned mother and child bison statue and new honors for veterans celebrate Manitoba’s history and heroes.
The throne speech emphasized progress while laying a foundation for the future, with the government promising to make life better for all Manitobans.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution
(& closely related styles) part 73
In the 1990s, many albums described as Alternative Rock or Britpop would have easily been regarded as New Wave if they were released in the preceding decade. In the same manner that, in the 2000s, records classified as Indie Rock would have also been New Wave if they came out 20 years earlier.
Regardless, all these post-'80s genres are closely related to, if not offshoots of, New Wave anyway. The initiated and confident, who has the ear for musicality, will not find the connection incomprehensible nor unacceptable. After all, this whole musical experience that I am taking all of you in for a ride is what I have been referring to as the Ultimate New Wave Evolution.
Sa Úgoy ng Músika
This set consists of 2000s-released albums by '80s pioneers of the genre and Indie Rock-associated newcomers in that decade--the music of all of which resides in the same sonic spectrum.

10 Must-Have Winter Gear Items for Parents and Kids
Winter is here, and with it comes the challenge of keeping your family warm, dry, and comfortable during the cold months. The right gear can make all the difference, whether you’re braving a snowy commute or heading out for a fun day of sledding. Here’s a list of 10 musthave winter items that every parent and child needs to stay cozy this season.
1. Waterproof Winter Boots: Insulated and waterproof boots are essential for keeping feet warm and dry. Look for boots with a durable sole for extra grip on icy sidewalks.
2. Insulated Jackets: A good winter jacket is non-negotiable. Choose one with insulation, wind resistance, and a waterproof outer layer. For kids, consider jackets with room to grow.
3. Thermal Base Layers: Base layers made of merino wool or moisture-wicking synthetics are perfect for retaining warmth
while keeping sweat at bay during outdoor play.
4. Waterproof Gloves or Mittens: Cold fingers can ruin the fun, so invest in insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens for the whole family. Mittens tend to be warmer for younger kids.
5. Warm Hats: A quality hat that covers the ears is a must for preventing heat loss. Choose options made of fleece or wool for maximum warmth.
6. Scarves or Neck Gaiters: Protect necks and faces from icy winds with soft scarves or neck gaiters. Gaiters are great for active kids who prefer something snug and easy to manage.
7. Snow Pants: For snowy adventures, snow pants are a lifesaver. They’re waterproof, warm, and keep kids dry during sledding, skiing, or just playing in the snow.
8. Wool Socks: Swap cotton socks for wool ones to keep feet warm and dry. Wool is perfect for wicking away moisture and providing extra insulation.
9. Hand and Toe Warmers: These are small but mighty! Disposable or reusable warmers can be slipped into gloves and boots for extra warmth during long outings.
10. Reflective Gear: With shorter daylight hours, reflective jackets, armbands, or clips are essential for staying visible during early morning or evening walks.
Bonus Tips for Choosing Winter Gear:
● Layer Up: Combine base, middle, and outer layers for customizable warmth.
● Go Waterproof: From jackets to gloves, waterproof materials are key.
● Size Wisely: Allow a little extra room for layers, especially for kids who are still growing. With these must-have items, your family will be ready to take on winter weather confidently and warmly. Bundle up, get outside, and enjoy everything this season has to offer!
