Two Bad Jokes with One Stone of Criticism (On the Distinction between Good Jokes and Bad Jokes and On the Revised CPR Procedure)
I
was watching a Filipino show on GMA channel; one of the hosts joked about “mouth-tomouth resuscitation” when the contestant he was interviewing said that he had once saved a life. The host quipped, “then you must know mouth-to-mouth resuscitation; can you render it on her?”, referring to the female host, of course expressed in a joking manner.
Good Jokes versus Bad Jokes I have two issues about the joke. First, it’s a pathetic fact that toilet jokes and sexual innuendos are still very much a part of the sense of humor of many Filipinos; I say pathetic because if we categorize jokes into levels, those involving sex and taunts and ridicule on races/nationalities remain to be the lowest and the cheapest
of jokes. The primary purpose of a joke, some will argue, is to poke fun on various issues and human weaknesses and to elicit laughter. However, I believe that there should remain a degree of respectability beneath such jokes. More so, a joke has to depend not solely on what kind of joke it is but primarily on the timing and the manner of delivery on the part of the jokester. Therefore, to claim that sexual and racial jokes are the most laughable is highly subjective—maybe yes, but only for people who have secret envy for others, who have unresolved insecurities, and who are either sexually repressed or lacking in knowledge about other more worthwhile issues.
resuscitation as a standard part of CPR. “The idea of a lip-lock with a stranger makes people uneasy; plus most people don’t know how to do mouth-to-mouth correctly. American Heart Association estimates that only one-third of the 300,000 Americans who go into cardiac arrest in public each year is given CPR, and theorizes that part of the problem is the mouth-to-mouth obstacle. “In 2008, AHA began exploring a new protocol in which civilian CPR training consisted of rapid chest compressions only. Now several studies have supported this change, finding that chestcompressions-only CPR may not only be more palatable, but more Failure to Update One’s effective at saving patients.” Knowledge Breeds Ignorance My second issue with that Sa Madaling Salita Hindi lahat ng biro o bad joke of that TV host is the realization that many people patawa ay nakatatawa. At hindi have an outdated knowledge lahat ng nakatatawa ay kaayaabout CPR, or cardiopulmonary aya. Sa ibang banda, hindi lahat resuscitation. To this day, many people still think that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is the highlight of CPR and they happily use this to joke on someone, playing on the sexual or “gross” image of a liplock especially between strangers. These people should be updating their knowledge on CPR because, as of 2008, there is already a campaign by American Heart Association (AHA) to start eliminating mouth-to-mouth

Or, in Simple Words There are good jokes, and there are bad jokes. A good joke is that whose purpose is to elicit from its audience not only laughter but also momentary lightheartedness, or “the good feeling of not being burdened by trouble, worry, or care.” Good jokes carry a sense of classiness and respectability for the audience. Bad jokes are bad jokes. They, on the other hand, are those which are insensitive to and unmindful of the dignity of the audience. They are cheap and rude and whose main purpose, whether intentional or not on the part of the jokester, is not to elicit laughter but to ridicule people and poke fun on their weaknesses and differences.

The Crows Are Back with Old Emperors Dressed in New Clothes
O
Helping Manitobans Get Out of Debt
(On the New Album of Counting Crows)
ne of my favorite Alternative Rock bands that shot to popularity in the 1990s is back with a new album. In April 2012, Counting Crows releases its sixth studio album, entitled Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation). The only downside is that the album consists entirely of cover songs. Regardless, the band presents the old songs dressed in freshly different flavors, so it compensates for the album’s lack of original materials. The Crows’ sound is unmistakeable—Postpunk-influenced with a touch of Folk and Pop. Worth checking out are their versions of songs by Teenage Fanclub (“Start Again”), Travis (“Coming Around”), Fairport Convention (“Meet on the Ledge”), and Faces (“Ooh La La”). Counting Crows’ debut album contains their most commercially popular songs, “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here,” and “Rain King.” The band's complete studio discography comprises of August and Everything
After (1993), Recovering the Satellites (1996), This Desert Life (1999), Hard Candy (2002), Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (2008), and Underwater Sunshine (2012). Other songs that I personally recommend are “Angels of the Silences,” “Daylight

CAN YAGIN DO IT AGAIN?
W
hen Filipino UFC fighters are talked about, names like Brandon “The Truth” Vera and Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz are often mentioned. However there is one name on the UFC roster that opened a lot of eyes in his last fight. Eddie Yagin, the Filipino-American from Hawaii, was one half of the bloody, exciting featherweight slugfest at UFC 145. In the end, Yagin defeated former title contender Mark Hominick. Yagin showed toughness and heavy hands. His next test will be September 1st at UFC 151 against a tough opponent in German kick boxer, Dennis Siver, who will be making his featherweight debut. Against Siver, Yagin cannot afford to take the damage he sustained against Hominick, and if Eddie rocks Siver, he needs to do the job of finishing him.Two aspects of his game that
needed improvement from his last outing. In the main event of UFC 151, Jon “Bones” Jones will defend his championship against dangerous veteran, Dan Henderson. Compare these fighters by their common opponents. Back in September of 2007, Henderson, the Pride champion faced Rampage Jackson, the UFC Champion in a unification bout. Henderson was out wrestled and lost a decision and his title. While Jon Jones defended the light heavyweight championship against Jackson at UFC 135, easily handling him, then finishing him in the fourth round via rear naked choke. Fight of the year in 2011 was Dan Henderson’s thriller against Shogun Rua at UFC 139. In the fight, Hendo clobbered Rua in the earlier rounds, while Shogun dominated a gassed Henderson in the later rounds. Dan Henderson picked

up the win by decision. Jon Jones Kyle Noke over Charlie Brenneman I’ll be tweeting throughout the show, follow me utterly destroyed Shogun Rua at UFC via submission Round 1 128, beating him by TKO in round www.twitter.com/BigMarvShow three to win the championship. If I were to use those matches as a gauge, I’d say Jones takes this one. He’ll out work the 41 year old veteran, then pour it on in the later rounds, taking the belt home via unanimous decision. But do not count out Hendo. One shot from his right hand it could be lights out. Just ask Michael Bisping. A mad scramble on the ground with Henderson can also be bad news, as it was for Fedor. Here’s my predictions for UFC 151 Jon Jones over Dan Henderson via unanimous decision Jake Ellenberger over Jay Hieron via TKO in Round 2 Dennis Siver over Eddie Yagin via TKO in Round 3 Thiago Tavares over Dennis Hallman via unanimous decision John Lineker over Yasuhiro Urushitani via split decision Michael Johnson over Danny Castillo via TKO Round 1 Jeff Hougland over Takeya Mizukaki via unanimous decision Tim Means over Abel Trujillo via TKO Round 1 Henry Martinez over Daron Cruickshank via submission Round 2 Shane Roller over Jacob Volkman via unanimous decision

fter “The Bourne Legacy,” another Hollywood movie is set to be filmed in the country with local producer Lope “Jun” Juban Jr. of the Philippine Film Studios Inc. (PFSI). He confirmed that a smaller version of the “Transformers” will probably be shot in Subic or Clark. Mr. Lope “Jun” Juban Jr. stated that he learned a lot of experience in the Hollywood production which he treated as “the big league”. He felt flattered because the foreign producers listened to all of his suggestion. The local producer is hoping that Filipino audience will like “ The Bourne Legacy” and he also declared that their company will do “Survivor Israel” again next year.

Sen. Tito Sotto breaks down during speech against RH Bill
A
n emotional senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto revealed that he had a child who died due to complications which he believes arose from his having taken birth control pills. Admitting that his stand against the Reproductive Health Bill has personal basis, Sotto revealed that a doctor friend suggested that his wife actresssinger Helen Gamboa-Sotto take contraceptives so she could continue with her showbiz career.
Cayetano chose to postpone her response to the speech. However according to senate journalists, sources, disagreed Nevertheless Helen got with most of the points Sotto pregnant while taking pills and a raised. baby boy was born with a weak heart that died five months later. Based from that experience, Sotto said his personal mission now is to warn people about the dangers of contraceptives. Sotto also cited in his speech that his fellow senator, actor Lito Lapid has a blue baby son who died when he was nine. RH bill principal sponsor Pia Cayetano also lost a kid due to congenital problems.

My Ride Ron Cantiveros
2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Touring Winnipeg in Luxury
I
t was perfect timing. My friend Annie was in for one night in Winnipeg for the first time and I had the keys to a red hot 2012 Mercedes Benz C63 AMG for the weekend. As it was her first visit to Winnipeg and since I “had” to drive the car all weekend, I offered to play the role of tour guide for the evening. Our first stop was the Manitoba Legislature where photos of the C63. I may have taken one photo of Annie on the steps of the Legislature. After a brief history lesson on Manitoba, we proceeded to the Forks. Again, more photos of the C63 and one more of Annie. This was followed by a short tour of St. Boniface, the North End, Garden City and Polo Park. We also made a pit stop at Assiniboine Park, around the west Perimeter, to end up at the University of Manitoba and a surprise visit to friends in Richmond West for dinner. Plus,
I had to show off the new wheels. I admit that I took a couple detours along the way. I really didn’t want to get out of the driver’s seat. Just starting the engine on the C63 sent chills throughout my body. The C63 AMG sports a 7-speed automatic transmission and a 6.3L V8 engine that pumps out 451 hp. Four hundred and fifty one horsepower! That basically gets you from 0-100km/ hr in about 4.3 seconds and I can confirm that. Mercedes Benz lists the coupe’s maximum speed at 280km/hr. I’m just going to take that on blind faith since no Canadian highway has a speed limit that high. With that much speed and power, I’m not going to even mention fuel economy. Plain and simple, the C63 AMG is one ultimate driving machine. It’s a powerful and elegantly designed car that turns heads as you drive down the street. The entire vehicle oozes
sex appeal and it didn’t hurt that my weekend tester came in Fire Opal red. The 18-inch, fivespoke AMG alloy rims caught my attention pretty quickly. The interior of the C63 AMG was no different. Sitting in the driver’s seat at the dealership, I knew it would be a pretty kick-ass weekend as I put the C63 AMG through its paces. In order to maximum driving time, the thought of sleeping in the car throughout the weekend also crossed my mind. Getting back on topic, the interior leather styling and bucket seats made it hard to step out of the car. I got even more excited as I wrapped my hands around the leather wrapped steering wheel equipped with AMG paddle shifters! This made driving
Filipino Journal 17
around the Perimeter Hwy fun. I kind of wish all cars had paddle shifters. Other vehicles in the same category include the BMW M3, Audi RS 5 and the Cadillac CTS V Coupe. Pricing on the 2012
Mercedes Benz C63 AMG tester was around $75k. Special thanks to Esther and Roger from Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg for setting me up for the weekend ride. It was a memorable tour of Winnipeg in an amazing vehicle.

Chilean Pavilion
I
f you're looking for some awesome live music, dancing, and delicious food, the Chilean Pavilion is the place to be! This pavilion began 34 years ago and it just keeps getting better and better. The live band, Descarga Latina, used many different instruments (harp, violin, drums, flute, etc) to audibly portray the beautiful Chilean culture. The show also consisted of a dance group from Toronto called Grupo Chile and they were amazing. It is such a treat to see people from across the country / world come together in celebration of their culture. The combination of percussion, vocals, and Latin dancing is enough to have you off your feet and swaying your hips. If you can't get enough, there are many places in Winnipeg that you can go to for Latin dance lessons. Be sure to try their empanadas but if you miss out, you can always visit The Chilean Corner at the Forks.
Punjab Pavilion
Japanese Pavilion
W
ho, what or where is Punjab? Punjab is a small northwestern state in India. The state is heavily focused on the agricultural industry, but don’t let its humble farming values fool you. The pavilion features uplifting entertainment with over 20 different dance groups, delicious Indian delicacies from Clay Oven and some stunning jewellery displays. With savory dishes like butter chicken, chana masala (chickpeas) and naan bread, the dining at this pavilion is easily irresistible. The true highlight, however, is the massive on-stage dance party the audience is invited to at the end of the show.
Y
ou may notice that all of the ambassadors and the performers are only partially Japanese. This is because their ancestors moved to Canada many years ago and they have since Westernized themselves. It is very seldom that you find a Japanese person who was raised in Canada and is still fluent in Japanese. Despite this, they are all very knowledgeable about their history and culture. There are approximately 15,000 Japanese (full and partial) people living in Manitoba today. If you visit the Japanese Cultural Centre (On McPhillips), you'll find different Japanese trinkets to purchase, language lessons you can enroll in, as well as karate and taiko classes (Japanese drumming).
Israeli Pavilion – Shalom Square
W

hat Israel lacks in size, it makes up for with beauty, talent and some of Folklorama’s tastiest dishes. This year, Shalom Square brought in two world class Israeli folk dance groups – Mexico City’s Anajnu Veatem, and Winnipeg’s Chai Folk Ensemble. Impressive is an understatement when describing the elegant form and contagious charisma of their dancers. Their talent was matched only by the live singers and band accompanying them on stage. From their succulent platter of potato bourekas, falafel balls, pita bread and hummus dip, to their world class performance, every single aspect of the pavilion was top notch.
