Vickar Community Chev Number 1 GM Dealer in Manitoba in 2012

First time it happened to a GM dealership in Manitoba "Behind me are the sales people who made this recognition possible," says Larry Vickar, President and CEO of Vickar Autogroup, Inc.," their dedication, their professionalism and customers oriented people, probe to be the main reason why Vickar Community Chev is the number one GM dealer in Canada in 2012." This event took place recently at the show room of Vickar Community Chev where the management recognized and gave credit to all employees especially the sales people who were all lining up at the back of the podium where Larry Vickar stood. The luncheon party was attended by the members of the management, sales people, employees from all the departments, guests, Larry's dad,

and representatives from General Motors. "It is known to everybody how Vickar Chev," he said as he moved his head towards his back and gestured to the sales people behind him," achieves this honor through their proven salesmanship, theirs being active members of the Vickar Community Chev family. And I am very thankful to everybody." A hepty and filling Ukrainian food served by a catering company had become the joy of people who, first the time, had a luncheon party held at the place where selling and buying of cars occur. Such a great moment to savour when you meet other employees and lunched together and felt proud to be part of the company's honor. The representatives of General Motors of Canada, namely,

Heather Spencer, District Sales Manager; Greg Pacholek, District Parts and Services manager, and Neil McKinnon, Customer Care Manager congratulated Larry Vickar and his staff for making the dealership as number one GM dealer in Canada in 2012. Louis St. Cyr, vice-president of Development, St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, awarded Larry Vickar a plaque for recognition of his involvement in the foundation and his commitment to help other communities in Winnipeg. And to add more excitement, Sam Vickar, manager, Vickar Community Chev, awarded Kathy Serediuk as the employee of the month for January 2012. Luncheon continued as everyone tried to savour and enjoy perogies and kubasa!

Sen. Santiago calls on students to join ‘net revolution’ against corruption BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER.

VOLUNTEER.

Sen. Miriam DefensorSantiago is calling young students to use the social media in the fight against traditional politicians in the coming May elections. Speaking at a recent symposium spearheaded by the UP Student Council in Manila, Santiago said young voters should use the internet to determine the fitness of the present batch of senatorial candidates to be in office for the 16th Congress this July. The feisty senator claimed that Philippine politics is dominated by two kinds of clowns: rich clowns; and poor clowns hoping to become

rich, both of whom resort to political antics and cheap gimmickry. She added in the internet, it is not possible to bribe all the netizens in cyberspace, thus preventing rich clowns in bribing press and broadcast journalists to gain added illegal advantage over their competitors. Santiago noted that Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are the socalled big three social media services. Facebook is the premier social media service in the world. Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service, while YouTube provides a forum for the distribution of video content, particularly eyewitness features of political protests.

The Return of the Bloody Irish Shoegazers

(On the Postpunk Band My Bloody Valentine)

F

inally I have a copy of the third album, entitled simply as mbv, of the Irish Postpunk/ Shoegaze band My Bloody Valentine, released on February 3, 2013. Before I listened to it I revisited first the band’s entire discography: the two minialbums, seven EPs, and two fulllength albums. Discovery I first discovered the music of My Bloody Valentine in 1988 on the recommendation of my highschool friend and fellow Alternative-music enthusiast Paolo Mendoza who immigrated to the U.S. in 1987 and who regularly sent me information and vinyl records and cassette tapes of obscure Postpunk bands in the late ’80s. These included The Jesus & Mary Chain, Skinny Puppy, The Dead Milkmen, Alice Donut, The Three Johns, and Pixies when these bands were still obscurities especially in the Philippines.

Origin Formed in 1983 in Dublin, Ireland, My Bloody Valentine consists currently of founding members Kevin Shields (guitar and vocals) and Colm Ó Cíosóig (drums) with Bilinda Butcher (vocals, guitars) and Debbie Googe (bass). Shoegaze Music Many musicologists regard My Bloody Valentine as one of the pioneers of the subgenre Shoegaze of Postpunk music— best defined by the fuzzy qualities of the guitar, achieved usually by maximizing the use of distortion, pitch bending, and digital reverb; steady bass; atmospheric synth sounds; dreamy vocal tracks drenched in reverb; and simple drum patterns and song structures. Shields once cited The Smiths as one of their influences in terms of melody. In their early years, bands for which they fronted included The Soup Dragons and Biff Bang Pow! Other Shoegaze bands whose sounds are closest to that of My

Bloody Valentine include The Jesus & Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr., Primal Scream, The Cranes, Chapterhouse, and Catherine Wheel. Music’s Evolution To the uninitiated, the evolved music of My Bloody Valentine might sound chaotic and aimless because of the swirling waves and whirlpools of distortion-coated and reverbdrenched guitars that usually bury the rest of the instruments and the vocal tracks. However, digging deeper into the atmospherics of the music, a Postpunk enthusiast will not find difficulty in discovering bittersweet melodies and heartwrenching balladry rooted in the band’s beginnings. My Bloody Valentine is like a distorted version of Cocteau Twins. Recommended songs are “Soft as Snow (but Warm Inside),” “Cupid Come,” “(When You Wake) You’re Still in a Dream,” “When You Sleep,” “What You Want,” and “Soon.” Musical Beginnings The early music of My Bloody Valentine—represented by the band’s first mini-album (This Is Your Bloody Valentine, 1985)—was still driven by the Psychobilly sensibilities of pioneering Postpunk bands like The Cramps and The Birthday Party. One song off this EP is actually titled “Don’t Cramp My Style.” Another song, “The Last Supper,” reminded me of The Doors because of the Manzarekstyle keyboards and the Morrisonapproach style of former lead

Filipino Journal 7

vocalist Dave Conway, who left after the third EP. My favorite remains to be “Forever and Again” and “Tiger in My Tank.” The ensuing mini-album (Ecstasy, 1987) plus the firstfour EPs (Geek!, 1985; The New Record by My Bloody Valentine, 1986; Sunny Sundae Smile, 1987; and Strawberry Wine, 1987) on the other hand, had more melodic and Pop sensibilities, highlighted by jangly and ringing guitars but with already a sporadic hint of the swirling reverbs and distortion which the band eventually became known for. The songs “She Loves You No Less,” “I Don’t Need You,” “(You’re) Safe in Your Sleep (From This Girl),” “You’ve Got Nothing,” “Sandman Never Sleeps,” “By the Danger in Your Eyes,” “Paint a Rainbow,” and

“Never Say Goodbye” evoke a mélange of The Smiths, The Jesus & Mary Chain, and early Primal Scream. Final Note Only one listen to My Bloody Valentine’s latest album and I was able easily to retrace its musical dots to the band’s previous works—fuzziness of guitars and atmospheric vocal mixes, yes they were there; but listening attentively to the songs with clinical precision, I did not fail to hear the melodic qualities of the rest of the instruments subtly buried under the typical bloody distortion and whirling reverb of guitars. My instant favorites off this new release are “New You” and “If I Am” because these songs both bear the strongest traces of the band’s musical beginnings.

Since its foundation in 2009, MACCFA has been involved in various endeavours to help member associations. Fundraising events were held to help our kababayans and other ethnic groups, like the fundraising for Haiti, a country which was hardly hit by natural disaster. The creation of HELPfund will generate more sustainable fund for disaster reliefs and for other programs on scholarship and community events. During the term of Rowena Oquendo, MACFFA was able to reach other councils in the province of Alberta, esp. in Edmonton and Calgary

and this led to the formation of the ambitious but doable Filipino National Congress of Canada. With this mandate of MACCFA, strategic plans are finalized so that the Filipino National Congress will represent various Filipino associations in Canada. A former national association of Filipino groups left a void to be filled by the proposed Filipino National Congress. Being one of the biggest ethnic group in Canada and having no formal national group, it is the purpose of MACCFA to spearhead the formation of the Filipino National Congress as a body to be involved in the consultation on immigration, culture, health, education and other issues affecting the Filipinos in Canada. "Right now, we are moving forward to have a stronger foundation to finalize the formation of the Western Filipino Council which will pave the way to merge with Ontario and Eastern Canada's various Filipino Associations, and finally , the formation of the Filipino National Congress, It will take goodwill and hardwork to realize our main objective.Lately, I was able to talk to some leaders and media in Toronto and I received positive responses and supports. Others say: "Panahon na." (Now is the time.), Cantiveros says. "We have the plan to meet various leaders in the major Canadian cities. And through their cooperation and

involvement plus our dedications and commitments, I am sure the formation of Filipino National Congress is doable.. As a matter of fact, we have the numbers, and the strength, a strong foundation to have a national Filipino group in Canada." Currently, MACFFA is working on the campaign platform to welcome associations as members. Presently, the member/organizations include Quezon Province Association of Manitoba, OFSAM, Pangasinan Group of Manitoba, Batangas Association of Manitoba, Bulacan Association of Manitoba, Bacoor Association of Manitoba, Teatro Filipino Group, and other associations have shown interest to join the council. Other forthcoming projects of MACFFA include; Bud&Spud Fundraising, Search for Mrs. Philippines of Manitoba and Car raffle, and sporting and charitable events. Canada Unequivocally Condemns North Korean Nuclear Test Tax Time Already (RRSPs Part 2)

T

his column is meant to follow up the column that I wrote for the last edition. Sometimes it makes sense to withdraw monies from your RRSP. In the last few years, the Tax Free Savings Plan has been created that provides an option that may give greater flexibility than RRSPs. I will discuss this later in the column. In the meantime, you can borrow from your RRSP for two reasons without having to pay tax if you make regular repayments. These are for the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) or the Home Buyer’s Plan (HBP). For the LLP the withdrawals may not exceed $10,000 in a year and $20,000 over four years and the reason can be for either the taxpayer or their spouse and must be repaid in equal installments over 10 years. The withdrawal for the HBP can be as much as $25,000 and must be repaid within 15 years. Any missed repayment will be added to the income of the taxpayer in the year missed. As the intention of RRSPs is to provide for future income and security in retirement, it is wise to repay these loans as soon as possible because until the funds are replaced you are missing out on the accrued deferred interest that assists in building an adequate retirement nest egg. I mentioned Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) earlier in my column in the previous edition. TFAs were introduced in 2009 and, like the RRSPS are cumulative and income earned in the account, is tax free. Differences include: • the original principal investment is not tax deductible • amounts may be withdrawn and replaced, but be careful as there are restrictions in timing when replacing withdrawals. The rate of contribution to TFSAs was $5,000 for 2009 through 2012, increased to $5,500 for 2013. The greater flexibility in withdrawals may be more attractive if you can anticipate needing the monies

in the future before retirement i.e. for education or purchasing a home but you will not get the a tax rebate when making the purchase as you do with an RRSP. As well, if your tax rate is lower and you anticipate a higher rate on retirement, the TFSA may look more attractive. Similar penalties are assessed for overcontributions to TFSAs as for RRSPs (1% per month for the period of over contribution). A tax planning approach might be for a couple (married or common law) with different levels of income to have the higher earner contribute to the lower earner who will then purchase a TFSA. The issues we have discussed here can become quite complex and decisions can affect not only your current taxes but your future security. This discussion is meant to introduce you to some of the considerations but I can only recommend that you consult professionals in tax planning and in investment decisions. It is also important that you become as familiar as possible and as knowledgeable as possible because it is your future that you are planning. I can remember several years where many clients invested in speculative venture funds because they “had to absolutely save taxes that year” and the fund ended up making very little, if any, money over a decade. And, finally, a constant thing to remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Terry Robert B.A., C.M.A., C.G.A. R. T. For your protection, a professional accountant is recommended and should be consulted before making any decisions regarding anything discussed in this column.

“What makes such actions even more unconscionable is the fact that the North Korean people starve and are denied their basic human dignity while the Pyongyang regime squanders limited resources. “While we had hoped the passing of dictator Kim Jong-il would have closed a sad chapter in

Ten “Kababayans” are now Certified General Accountants (CGA)

I

by Hipolito Alibin, Jr.

n November, I attended the 2012 CGA Manitoba Convocation in Brandon and I am proud to share and congratulate “10 Kababayans” (12% of 86 grads) who obtained this respected and globally recognized accounting designation. The graduates were: Michael Balolong, Dexeryll Balolong, Melanie Torre-Cabacungan, Tristan Cupida, Elenita Gatpayat, Herbert Herrera, Janette Nuilan, Joan Presto, Maria Rafal, and Jovito Rasay. We have heard many stories of kababayans who experienced hardship in getting their education and work experience recognized in Canada, and these graduates share the same. According to Herrera, “I found it hard to apply for supervisory position because my (work) experiences were not here in Canada”, and Rasay adds, “I used search companies, mailed many applications, resulted in only 3 interviews, and none gave me the opportunity. It was difficult for employers to get confirmation of my work experiences and education from the Philippines”. CGA Manitoba has made efforts to recognize the credentials of and assist internationally trained accountants. According to M.Balolong, “CGA was closest to what I have (CPA) in the Philippines, and recommended by my work colleagues”, and Rafal adds, “A one-year scholarship

from the Province of MB Labour & Immigration and CGA allowed me to finish up to Level 4 courses prior to seeking employment”. Students complete the program in both classroom and online setting, Presto says, “The online learning structure allowed me to work full-time while earning my designation and bachelor’s degree”. The program is known for its rigorous academic curriculum where perseverance, discipline, and commitment are a must, but the professional opportunities are endless. According to D.Balolong, “Working full time, raising a family and studying are really draining but with family support, especially my husband, it became a lot easier”. CGA Canada has many member and certificate affiliations internationally such as, U.K., Australia, Ireland, France, Caribbean, China, and India.

CGA’s are in excellent position to work anywhere as they please. According to Presto, “With this (CGA) designation, I would also like to obtain my CPA Australia so that I can live and work there.” The program draws respect and recognition from employers, Gatpayat says, “I am convinced that CGA, just like the other designations, is reputable. It also opens doors for a wide range of career opportunities”. The notion of accountants as ‘bean counters’ is in the past. CGA’s can be found in midlevel to executive positions such as, Manager, Controller, CFO, President/CEO, and even as Politician. Majority of CGA graduates aspire the same positions in their career. According to Cupida, “I want to use my designation to get into positions where I would handle more responsibilities”, and

Jovito Rasay

Michael Balolong

M.Balolong adds, “I need to add value to the organization where I work and show how a CGA makes a difference”. Again, congratulations to our CGA graduates! The CGA family, your families and friends, employers, and Filipino Community are very proud of your accomplishments. candidates from five different political parties were proclaimed at Plaza Miranda in Manila while the Three Kings’ United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) candidates were proclaimed in Cebu City. Each slate has 12 candidates. At stake

are 12 Senate seats. And by the looks of it, it’s just like any other mid-term senatorial election. There is nothing unusual about it, right? Wrong! Although, the senatorial lineups seem to appear “normal” by Philippine election standards, there is something – or should I say, several things – odd or strange about some of the candidates. And underneath the seemingly placid political waters, there is a great deal of crosscurrents going on that could pull a candidate down. Team PNoy But first, let’s look at the leaders of the two opposing slates. PNoy is using his popularity to sway the voters to support his “Team PNoy,”

hoping that branding them under his own moniker would attract a lot of votes. And as the team’s campaign manager, Sen. Franklin Drilon, hammered it in at the Plaza Miranda rally, “It’s time to show support to President Noy!” Yep, a vote for Team PNoy is a vote for PNoy. PNoy told the cheering crowd about his administration’s accomplishments. He said that he needs the Team PNoy candidates to win so he could continue his reforms. Then he criticized the opposition candidates whom he claimed are running only to promote their personal interests and that of the previous administration of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo,

James Yap is dating again, keeps Ciara Foundation extends aid to cancer-stricken children The Ciara materials and construction of Valentine date a secret

B

asketball star James Yap wants his Valentine plans a secret, at least for the time being. Last month, James took a vacation In Milan, Italy which only fueled rumors that he is dating a pretty girl of ItalianAustralian stock.

Although the 30-year old PBA superstar neither confirm nor deny the issue, he remains as elusive as ever by saying he will divulge the identity of the girl in due time. Last December, James’ marriage to TV host Kris Aquino was annulled by the court that cited lack of authority of the solemnizing officer as the reason why the annulment was granted. James and Kris settled everything from the division of their properties to the visitation rights of their son James Jr., nicknamed Bimby.

T

he Ciara Foundation of the local government of Mandaluyong recently donated P100, 000 to ChildHaus, a shelter for cancer-stricken children and their families.

Foundation is a charity organization focused on the medical and educational assistance for underprivileged children. It was established on July 2005 by Charisse Abalos. The organization started its benevolent activities by having its own ward at the Mandaluyong Hospital. It expanded its charitable works by granting donations for building

schools in isolated areas in the country. The foundation also provides scholarship grants and livelihood programs. ChildHaus was founded and run by famous hairdresser, philanthropist and businessman. Ricky Reyes. It offers temporary shelter for indigent patients from the different provinces who have cancer or other dreaded diseases and have no place to stay in Metro Manila while undergoing medical evaluation or treatment.

Leader of popular Korean band passes away

Lim Yoon Taek was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer and has been living on medications since the discovery of the ailment on January 2011. His doctor said they treated Lim Yoon Taek by implementing anticancer treatments to stop the

disease from progressing further. On May 2011 he received a gastrectomy which removed parts of his stomach. However cancer cells again appeared in his abdominal cavity so that the doctors administered more anticancer treatments. In 2011, his band competed in Mnet's talent show "Superstar K," Korea’s version of "American Idol," and won the third season of the show. Prior to their appearance

What’s at stake... from page 13

filed against her. All of these could boomerang against PNoy and hurt the Team PNoy candidates at the polls in the May election. “Three Kings” On the other hand, the Three Kings -- Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile -- are carrying a lot of excess baggage. Binay, who made his presidential aspirations known long time ago, has to explain a lot of things that happened when he was mayor of Makati City from 1986 to 1998 and 2001 to 2010 -- a total of 19 years! An article, “The Lord of Makati,” was published on March 28, 2001, when he was running for another term as Makati mayor. The article says, “Can Binay explain his wealth? In less than a decade, Jejomar ‘Jojo’ Binay, former chair of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and former mayor of Makati, accumulated at least P80 million worth of real estate properties in Makati and Batangas, which he kept undeclared…” To date, Binay has yet to explain his wealth. Erap carries the stigma of having been convicted of plunder while Enrile was haunted by his long association with the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. He was one of the “Rolex 12” who assisted Marcos in planning the martial law in 1972. Although Erap and Enrile aren’t running for national office, they have an agenda in this year’s election. Erap’s son, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada is positioned to become Binay’s vice presidential running mate in 2016. Enrile, who will be termed out in 2016 would like to see his son, Juan Ponce “Jack” Enrile Jr., elected senator this year. But Jack is getting a lot of flak because of several incidents in his past that involved people getting killed. Although he came out clean in those cases, there are a lot of people who are not totally convinced of his innocence. Dynasticracy But what is most noticeable in this year’s election is the presence of dynastic candidates. There are five dynastic candidates in Team PNoy, namely: Alan Peter Cayetano (brother of incumbent Sen. Pia Cayetano); Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV (nephew of PNoy); Cynthia Villar (wife of termed out Sen. Manny Villar); Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara (son of termed out Sen. Edgardo Angara); and Ramon “Jun” Magsaysay Jr. In the opposition UNA, there are five dynastic candidates: Jack Enrile; Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito (son of Erap and half-brother of Jinggoy); Margarita “Tingting” Cojuangco (aunt-in-law of President Aquino); Nancy BinayAngeles (daughter of Binay); and Milagros “Mitos” HabanaMagsaysay. In my article, “Should the Philippine Senate be abolished?” (February 6, 2013), I wrote: “If all 10 dynastic candidates win in the May elections and you add the three incumbent dynastic senators (Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Estrada, and Pia Cayetano), there would be a total of 13 dynastic senators in the new Senate. That’s more than 50% of the entire Upper House of the new Congress! That’s not ‘representative’ of the people. That makes the eight family dynasties collectively in control of the majority of the Senate. That’s called dynasticracy.” Roxas-Binay rivalry So what’s at stake in the 2013 election? Recently, Drilon alleged that the UNA is out to make PNoy a “lame duck” president. Binay

denied the allegation, saying, “UNA remains supportive of Aquino’s ‘Daang Matuwid’ and reform agenda but would not hesitate to expose to the public any wrongdoing it will see.” However, he said, “We are the new opposition, an opposition who will be supportive of matters which the President is undertaking.” He claimed that some quarters are just trying to create a “wedge” between them. Really? Last January 31, Drilon announced that the Liberal Party is going to field Interior and Local

Filipino Journal 19

Government Secretary Mar Roxas as its standard bearer in 2016. With Binay running for president, would the entry of Roxas in the presidential derby bring out the old rivalry between the Samar (NoyBi) and Balay (Noy-Mar) factions? It would be interesting to know how PNoy would deal with a Roxas-Binay presidential contest? Would he remain loyal to the Liberal Party and support Roxas or would he support Binay, a longtime family friend whom the NoyBi people say would take a bullet for PNoy?

In addition to Roxas and Binay, two other dynasts are expected to run for president in 2016 – Senators Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., the new chairman of the Lakas-CMD Party. The 2016 presidential election might turn out to be a battle royale among the country’s powerful dynasties. Makes one wonder what did we gain in 30 years after the EDSA People Power revolution? It looks like we’re going back to square one.

Culinary romance on the Assiniboine

T

here are amazing things happening in a little white tent nestled along the banks of the Assiniboine River as it meets with Red River. The trappers of the fur trade probably never had it this good as they settled into dinner at Upper Fort Garry. I'm sure their daily meals of pemmican and smoked meat were delicious. Dinner on the river brings back some of our long forgotten heritage.

RAW: almond is the temporary pop up restaurant that served as the culinary hotspot for last three weeks during our cold and windy Winnipeg winters. Little did I know that such an imaginative idea would spark national attention amongst food circles. RAW: almond was the brainchild idea of chef Mandel Hitzer, chef/owner of deer + almond and RAW: Gallery director Joe

Kalturnyk. The idea was to open up a contemporary restaurant on the frozen river trail and bill itself as a culinary winter festival. In search of the next unique gastronomic experience, a five-course meal prepared by several of Winnipeg's most talented chefs at RAW: almond was an opportunity I did not want to miss. Chefs from Segovia, Pizzeria Gusto, Elements, Deseo, Diversity, Bistro 7 1/4 and Peasant Cookery took part in the culinary collaboration. The Tallest Poppy served up brunch on the weekend. The Tallest Poppy featured a traditional north end breakfast brunch that included Red River cereal, bannock and all the fixings of scrambled eggs, crispy pan fried bacon and fluffy pancakes with warm raspberry infused maple syrup. In a special culinary colaboration last Saturday, the guests were treated to an additional serving of sweet pan seared Filipino longanisa.

Hip-hop concert makes young girl’s wish come true By Jackie Doming ome of Winnipeg’s most talented hip-hop and R&B performers shook the West End Cultural stage on Feb. 3 for the first annual Urban Rhapsody Charity Concert. The illustrious line-up of urban performers included Western Canadian Music Award winner Flo, Tiffany Ponce, Jon-C & Charlie Fettah from Winnipeg’s Most, The Happy Unfortunate, Paranormal Pandas, The B-Team, Shaq, The GoodFunk Gang, and Brock Isfeld presents Rye & Coke. Jackie Doming, event organizer and Creative Communications student at Red River College, invited urban culture enthusiasts to come together and support local hiphop while raising money for a great cause. The inaugural charity concert raised almost $4,000 in support of The Children’s Wish Foundation.

S

“I organized this event to help share the gifts of our talented singers, rappers, dancers, DJs and designers in the local hiphop community,” said Doming. “It’s important to invite these role models to be take part in meaningful causes in hopes of inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.” All proceeds raised from the concert will be donated to fulfill young Briana’s wish. Briana was born with a condition called Transposition of the Greater Arteries. This conditioned called for her to have open-heart surgery at just ten days old. Briana, now four-years-old, leads a healthy life and is excited to have her wish finally granted. Her mother, Sandra, says Briana can’t stop talking about her future trip to Disney World and can’t wait to meet her favourite Disney princesses.

The Urban Rhapsody Charity Concert would like to thank its generous sponsors (1031 Virgin Radio, Canadian Youth Business Foundation, REFRESH concepts, The UPS Store 380 – Kenaston Common, Red River College and the Filipino Journal), prize donors, volunteers, supporters, and Briana’s family for taking part in this magical journey.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S

T

he email read, “Can you fit the Porsche 911 Carrera S into your schedule?” I barely had a chance to hit the reply button and I was already thinking of where to drive the second Porsche in as many months into my first year reviewing new model cars for the Filipino Journal. I believe in the same split second, I pretty much figured I’d cancel all my appointments and justified delivering a bundle of the newspaper to Brandon. For nearly a week in September, I spent nearly every waking moment in the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. Of course I’d fit the 911 Carrera S into an incredibly tight travel and project schedule. I didn’t cancel any meetings. The closest thing I’ve had in owning a Porsche 911 was a small diecast model back in high school and I was anxious to sit behind the wheel. Ferry Porsche once said: “ The 911 is the only car you could drive on an African safari or at Le Mans, to the theatre or through New York City traffic.” I don’t think Ferry made it to Manitoba but the thought would easily apply to the country roads of Manitoba in the middle of winter. In its 7th generation, the 911 continues to be an iconic sportscar. This model is larger, lighter and faster than previous models. Sitting behind the wheel of this beautiful machine was a

delight to the senses. The roar of the engine screamed, “Drive me fast. Drive me faster” as we ripped along the country roads enroute to Portage La Prairie. The Brandon excursion was a bit to far in the short amount of time I had that day. Even with high performance winter tires and a slight cross

wind and blowing snow, I had to hold back a little. Just a little. The cockpit of the 911 was familiar as the new centre stack console comes from the Panamera. And what cockpit would be without a G-Force metre. Yes, the Porsche 911 Carrera S has a G-Force metre. The only thing I needed now was a fighter pilot’s helmet and a licence to fly! The top speed of the 911 The Porsche 911 Carrera S comes with a 3.8L naturally aspirated flat 6 engine with 400hp. In my real world Manitoba highway results, 0-100km/hr was under 5 seconds and close to the published sprint times of 4.3

seconds. I’m sure if I owned or rented a test track, I’d be more than happy to test this over, and over, and over again. On a completely different note, the Porsche 911 Carrera S is by far the most expensive and least efficient Filipino Journal delivery vehicle in our history. The storage capacity that sits

in the front of the vehicle was only capable of holding 6 small bundles of the newspaper, or 300 copies of the Filipino Journal. Price as tested of the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S was a mere $146,975. I think I may just have to settle with the premium diecast model the next time I see them for sale at Costco.

BELLATOR MMA: How to Survive MMA in a UFC World

A

s of 2013, all ties SPIKE TV had with the UFC were legally severed. This freed the cable channel up to add MMA of a different flavor to their lineup, namely, Bellator MMA. How will they measure up against MMA Juggernaut, UFC? Over the years of UFC’s domination of the sport of MMA there have been many mixed martial arts organizations. Elite XC had the network deal with CBS, however it was run by boxing promoter, Gary Shaw who had no understanding of how to run an MMA company. Also, he put all his eggs in one basket. A basket by the name of Kimbo Slice. This man was a YouTube star due to many videos of him knocking people out. Eventually, his short comings were displayed and Elite XC’s credibility was shot. After a melee between the Diaz brothers and Jason “Mayhem” Miller, live on CBS, made MMA look like a bunch of thugs,

CBS washed their hands of the sport. Affliction MMA was started by the owner of the clothing line of the same name. Tom Atencio started his own fight company after UFC banned his brand from sponsoring fighters at their shows. Atencio signed the biggest names outside the UFC like Fedor Emelienko and Ben Rothwell, as well as former UFC Champions like Josh Barnett, Andrei Arlovski, Vitor Belfort and Tim Silvia. After three events, the company folded their MMA side and Atencio mended ties with Dana White. Affliction is now allowed to sponsor UFC fighters. StrikeForce had all the tools to become some real competition to the UFC. An owner in Scott Coker, who understood the MMA business. A deal with Showtime to run events as well as signing key fighters such as Nick Diaz, Cung Le, Gina Carano, Ronda Rousey, King Mo, Dan Henderson,

Allistair Overeem and of course, Fedor. Unfortunately, they made their biggest mistakes banking on stars to win fights rather than just promoting fights themselves. Dan Henderson wasn’t supposed to lose to Jake Shields, but he did. And Shields left the company as its middleweight champion. Fedor wasn’t supposed to lose to Fabricio Werdum, but he did. Via triangle choke in the first round. Then Zuffa, UFC’s parent company, purchased them. After taking some of StrikeForce’s key fighters and moving them to UFC, canceled events and other circumstances, Showtime lost interest and ran StrikeForce’s final show January 12, 2013. Bellator has many things a company needs to compete against UFC. It’s different in format, with the tournament style. They signed a big star in King Mo and have stars they have built, who came up through the tournament like champions Michael Chandler and Pat Curran. Most importantly, they’re on SPIKE TV. UFC used SPIKE TV to launch them and the sport of MMA to great success. People who tune into SPIKE TV, want to see MMA on this channel. With a live event every Thursday, they’ll get it. Do I think Bellator MMA, will ever unseat the Ultimate Fighting Championship as the world’s premier MMA organization? Highly unlikely. UFC is the brand. People know it more than they know the sport of MMA. It’s Kleenex. It’s Xerox…. Gatorade. But if Bellator learns from the mistakes of the past and keeps offering a different flavor of MMA, they stand to be very successful. Don’t try to beat the UFC and don’t try to be the UFC. Be Bellator, and be good.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Ron Cantiveros Photo by AJ Marcelino

February has not been kind to our beloved Winnipeg Jets. Closing out a three game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Jets lost in an 8-3 shellacking in south Florida before heading back to the comfy confines of MTS Centre. An overtime 3-2 win against the Panthers ended the Jets three game losing streak as Bryan Little scored with 16 seconds left in overtime to secure the two point overtime win.

Hoping to extend their winning streak to two games, the Jets lost 3-2 in a disappointing loss against the Maple Leafs. I'm sure that all the Leaf fans that came out to watch the game were pretty happy with the final result. Zach Redmond would score his first NHL goal in a losing effort. As a long time Winnipeg resident and fan of the Winnipeg Jets, I continuously wonder how as a

Zach Redmond rips a one-timer past James Reimer of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was Redmond's first NHL goal and a short-handed goal off a feed from Bryan Little.

Winnipeger, you can be a Maple Leafs fan. Maybe when the Leafs visit Winnipeg next, I'll try to find out. The Jets travelled to Ottawa to take on the Senators and Al Montoya would get his second start of the season as Ondrej Pavelec was out with a flu bug. The lone goal of the game came from the Jets' left winger Alexei Ponikarovsky and gave Montoya his first shoutout win with the Jets. In last Tuesday's game against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers, a late third period rally in the dying seconds ended in another less than stellar performance in front of the home town fans losing 3-2 against the Flyers. Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins return to Winnipeg on Friday night and battle the Bruins on Sunday evening. The Jets head out on a gruelling six game road trip to play the Sabres, Hurricanes, Flyers, Devils and the Rangers. They close out February games in a home matchup against the Devils. The Jets have been absolutely horrible on their penalty killing and teams have been taking huge advantage of that fact. Prior to the game against the Flyers, Dustin Byfuglien was a scratch due to a mysterious lower body injury that resulted in a five game absence. Also looking to get back into the Jets lineup is Zach Bogosian as he recovers from a wrist injury.

Barking Up the Wrong Tree (Explaining Idiomatic Expressions)

A

friend at work confided in me that there are some coworkers of ours who comment that I am a very quiet person and that they sometimes find it hard to read my mind. I am not a quiet person; I am simply selective. I simply select the appropriate venue where to express certain ideas and opinions. I conserve my time and energy by expressing my ideas and opinions in the right situations. When I'm with a group engaged in small talks like gossips, I remain silent and uninvolved. When I'm at a meeting or any training sessions or conferences, that's when I don't hold my piece every time I think I have something useful to contribute to the discussion. When I have an issue with someone, I don't talk about this with others; I find a tactful way to deal with the person with the intention of resolving the issue. Many people are noisy and opinionated when they're in the hallways or in the lunchroom. But when they are at a meeting

or in front of people with whom they have issues, they clam up and become timid. And, for some reason, they get resentful to those who have the courage to express their ideas. People like these are just increasing the level of the stress that they face every day. The above situations are examples in which the idiomatic expression "Barking up the wrong tree" may be observed being at play. The Last Leaf Many people waste their ideas and opinions and misdirect their sentiments by "barking" [expressing] them up the "wrong tree" [wrong forum, wrong persons, or inappropriate situations].

Rizal’s Boost for Philippine Independence

I

n an article in the Philippine Free Press on December 17, 1952, newspaperman Vicente Pacis narrated how he met Congressman Henry A. Cooper and learned how Jose Rizal, even in death, had a hand in bringing about Philippine independence. Pacis was an AP correspondent in 1926 when he accidentally entered Cooper’s office at the U. S. Capitol. Cooper, an elderly man from Wisconsin, was just eager to meet the young Filipino and to tell him about his authorship of the Philippine Organic Act of 1902. The Philippine-American War which started in 1899 after Spain ceded the Philippines to the U. S. for $20 million was winding down because of superior American forces. However, America was ambivalent about what to do with their trophy. The Anti-Imperialist League led by ex-President Grover Cleveland, William Jennings Bryan and Andrew Carnegie opposed the annexation of the Philippines. They have no use for a “country of

savages incapable of civilization” and would prefer to leave the expansion of empires to countries like England, Germany, France, Spain, etc. Indeed, most Americans and newspapers viewed the people of the Philippines as barbarians, savages, pirates and unfit for selfgovernment. President William McKinley agonized over what to do with the Philippines. The American constitution was explicitly against imperialism and his government was harassed by people who could not imagine such uncultured savages becoming Americans. Still, he and the ruling Republican Party decided to acquire the Philippines and gradually prepare it through education for democracy and independence. The task fell on Congress to pass the enabling laws and this is where Congressman Cooper as chairman of the Committee on Insular Affairs came in. In his long sponsorship speech on June 19, 1902, he opened with

“Before we say that the Filipino people are barbarians and savages whose future is hopeless, we should remember the past and not forget how largely human beings are the products of environment. . . . Think of their history! For three hundred hopeless years they had seen Spanish officials treat office merely as a means by which to rob the helpless people. For three hundred years they lived under a government which deliberately kept the mass of the people in ignorance, which deliberately sought to close to them every avenue of social and political advancement; a government under which it was well-nigh useless for a man even to attempt to acquire property, because his accumulations furnished only so much more of temptation and opportunity for the rapacity of government officials; a government which punished even the most respectful protest against its infamous executions with banishment or death. . . . “What the Filipinos think, what they feel what they do, are only the natural results of what they have undergone. Yet, despite this environment, this deprivation, this outrage, this unfortunate race has given to the world not a few examples of intellectual and moral worth—men in the height of mind and power of character.” Then Cooper talked of Jose Rizal thus, “It has been said that if American institutions had done

nothing else than furnish to the world the character of George Washington, ‘that alone would entitle them to the respect of mankind.’ So, I say to all those who denounce the Filipinos indiscriminately as barbarians and savages, without possibility of a civilized future, that this despised race proved itself entitled to their respect and to the respect of mankind when it furnished to the world the mind and character of Jose Rizal.” He then narrated the life of Rizal from his birth in Calamba to his execution in Luneta. “On the night before his death, he wrote a poem,” Cooper continued. “I will read it, that the house may know what were the last thoughts of this ‘pirate,’ this ‘barbarian,’ this ‘savage,’ of a race ‘incapable of civilization’!” Without drama but with feeling, Cooper recited Derbyshire’s English version of Mi Ultimo Adios. After he said the last line, “Beloved creatures all, farewell! In death there is rest,” there was a long solemn silence.

Then the entire House broke into prolonged and loud applause. The first Philippine Organic Act was approved on July 1, 1902 to coincide with the conclusion of the Philippine-American War. It provided for the creation of an elected Philippine Assembly. Other important provisions included a bill of rights for the Filipinos, the disestablishment of the Roman Catholic Church as the state religion and the conservation of natural resources for the Filipinos. The Cooper Act was followed by other legislations including eventually the Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934 which created the Philippine Commonwealth and stipulated July 4, 1946 as the date when the United States handed the independence to the Philippines. And so, by invoking the genius of Jose Rizal, Congressman Henry A. Cooper got the ball rolling towards Philippine independence. And we scratch another notch in the lore of our national hero.

Pacquiao’s House colleagues want next fight in Manila

S

everal congressmen in the House of Representatives are urging Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to hold his next fight live in Manila. The lawmakers’ appeal was apparently in reaction to the reported claim of Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser, that the Filipino boxing icon prefers his next fight outside the US with China’s gambling resort, Macau as a primary choice.

Fight promoter Bob Arum reportedly agreed with Koncz as he noted that the US would impose hefty tax on the Filipino champ’s possible $25 million earning. Aside from Macau, holding the fight in Singapore could give Pacquiao a bigger share of the purse. Pacquiao is running for re-election as Saranggani province congressman. He is reportedly amenable to fight before his adoring fans in the Philippines.

Tagle among frontrunners to replace Pope Benedict XVI

T

here are no official candidates yet to replace Pope Benedict XVI but the name of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle is among the potential candidates that have been most frequently mentioned recently. Citing health reasons, Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world when he announced that he will be resigning by the end of the month. Now that a conclave is looming, Church leaders will select a new pope who will guide the Church best. Tagle was described as a charismatic religious leader. He is also close to Pope Benedict after working with him at the International Theological Commission. However he only became a cardinal in 2012 and conclaves are wary of young candidates. But church observers say that the fact that Benedict cited health reasons for resigning could favor younger candidates like Tagle. Aside from Tagle, the other “papabili” (potential popes) that were mentioned

include Joao Braz de Aviz (Brazil, 65), Timothy Dolan, (USA, 62), Marc Ouellet (Canada, 68), Gianfranco Ravasi (Italy, 70), Leonardo Sandri (Argentina, 69), Odilo Pedro Scherer (Brazil, 63), Christoph Schoenborn (Austria, 67), Angelo Scola (Italy, 71), and Peter Turkson (Ghana, 64). Tagle was born in Manila in 1955. He was ordained priest in 1982 and finished his Doctorate in Sacred Theology at the Catholic University of America. He is currently the titular-archpriest of the Church of Saint Felix of Cantalice at Centocelle and de facto Primate of the Philippines. Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, Tagle succeeded the Archbishop Emeritus, Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales. Tagle is also the Professor of Dogmatic Synthesis at the Graduate School of Theology of San Carlos Seminary and an Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at the Loyola School of Theology of the Ateneo de Manila University.
