A Beauti-Fall Season Remember the historic October snowstorm that hammered Winnipeg and southern Manitoba last year? The wind and snow stole the coming of the picturesque autumn landscape and so were the moments that everybody was looking forward to capture in it. This year, amid uncertain times due to the pandemic, one thing is beyond doubt- the fall season sure did emerge beautifully, letting people experience the crisp weather and capture the vibrant colours of the season. Fall photo sessions were a hit again! The Diego family is just one of the many families who did not pass up the chance of seizing the best time to take their traditional family fall mini session. “It has been a tradition that we take our family picture every season and occasion so we’ll have beautiful memories to look back to,” mother Irma Diego said. Mark Godilano of Mark Godilano Photography took the shots while he shared how COVID-19 affected his business and the new normal in photo sessions.

any families did not let the pandemic stop them from doing their traditional fall photo sessions. With the generally beautiful weather and stunning foliage this year, who would not pose for snapshots in what is considered to be the most sought after mini session every year. Mark Godilano of Mark Godilano Photography is one of the many photographers in Winnipeg who do photo sessions. “Fall has the most beautiful colors and feel and this is something that most families want to hang on their wall as a souvenir.” Godilano said that he started taking bookings after the government allowed businesses to operate provided that safety protocols are followed. He takes bookings until there is enough foliage and while leaves haven’t fallen from trees yet. And while his wedding and other event bookings were affected by the pandemic, many booked for the photo sessions. “I guess since we cannot travel for vacations, people have more time for their families which includes photoshoots like this,” Mark said. Locations for photoshoot are mostly outdoors such as parks, fields and forests but Godilano assures that he and his clients still follow safety measures. “We practice social distancing so it’s basically a contactless session. A link is sent to them where they can download their photos.”

Will Covid-19 end Trump’s presidential run? PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
T
he news came in at 9:00 PM on October 1, 2020. “President Donald Trump tweets he Melania test positive for Covid-19.” It was the most shocking news since Trump won the presidency in 2016. It’s a staggering blow to Trump’s reelection campaign. With 32 days left to Election Day, 14 days of which will keep Trump in quarantine, that would leave him with only 18 days to campaign until November 3, that is if he gets his health back after the quarantine period. The question is: Should he continue to run or should he quit? But the following day, Trump was rushed to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in a helicopter to undergo tests. According to his spokesperson, Trump will stay in the hospital for just a “few days.” The president has a low-grade fever, nasal congestion and a cough. He received a promising but untested experimental drug from Regeneron to treat Covid-19. In a brief video message upon his arrival at the hospital, he tweeted saying that he is “doing very well” and suggested that he was visiting the hospital only as a precaution. However, there were reports that Trump was feeling very tired and very fatigued. According to his physician, Trump has been on supplemental oxygen on his first day at the hospital but has since been able to breathe. However, he’s not out of harm’s way yet. According to a White House spokesman, he was not planning to
transfer his authority to Vice President Mike Pence. “The president is in charge,” he said. And this puts the presidency in danger because if anything happens to Trump – say lose consciousness – and without transferring authority to Pence, it could put national security in peril. National security Needless to say, it’s time like this that could give the Russians and Chinese – or Iran -- something to worry about. The prospect of accidental or intentional war is very high, which raises the question: What is Trump worried about? Can’t he trust Pence from taking over the presidency temporarily? Or perhaps, he’s thinking that once Pence assumes presidential authority, what would prevent Pence from relinquishing the authority? Just thinking. The presidential line of succession, laid out in a 1947 law, falls first to Pence. If he were to become too ill to carry out the duties of the president, the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, would step in. Pelosi has been tested and is negative. What about the nuclear football? Who’s in charge of pressing the nuclear button if the need arises? The nuclear football (also known atomic football, the president’s emergency satchel or black box) is a briefcase, the contents of which are to be used by the president to authorize a nuclear attack while away from fixed command centers, such as the White House Situation Room. It functions as a
mobile hub in the strategic defense system of the U.S. It is held by an aide-de-camp. If the president is in the hospital, the nuclear football is kept in the room accessible at any time. If presidential authority is transferred to Pence, the nuclear football is passed on to Pence. Indeed, national security is of prime importance whenever the president is incapacitated to respond immediately to a geopolitical situation or – worse – an enemy nuclear attack. A rogue Russian, Chinese or Iranian general could start an attack. Well, you could say, “That’s not going to happen. It happens only in the movies.” But you need to remember the Cold War might have been over but nuclear weapons still pose immediate danger to world peace. And as long as the Russians and Chinese have their own nuclear football ready to go at anytime, the world will never be at peace. Call me crazy but that’s how I feel about it.
I am not a medical professional but this information is available by googling the Internet. If Trump would eventually end up with these debilitating side effects, how can he continue to discharge the duties of president of the United States? For the sake of the country, it would be best for him to withdraw his candidacy. The American people deserve a healthy president who can execute his duties without the hindrance or interruption of life-threatening diseases or conditions. Campaign status Meanwhile, the campaign’s status is questionable at this time. He’ll be in isolation for 14 days until October 15. But that doesn’t mean that he can go back to work immediately. He’d still be recovering from the ill effects
Premature discharge? Last Saturday, October 3, Trump’s physician Dr. Sean Conley announced that Trump might be discharged by Monday, October 5. However, it seems that a discharge five days after he contracted the disease the disease is highly unusual and unlikely. But I can see where Trump is coming from. By trying to downplay the severity of the disease, he would take the change of going back to the White House where he can project that he has recovered. But the disease has an incubation period of 10 to 14 days, which means that the virus is still actively circulating in his body. And the virus could cause pulmonary fibrosis (which makes breathing difficult and there is no cure), kidney failure (which necessitates undergoing dialysis treatment), and congestive heart failure (which could lead to heart attack). Actually, since he was rushed to the hospital he had two episodes of using supplemental oxygen. He may be already in the early stages of pulmonary fibrosis. He was treated with dose of the experimental monoclonal antibody therapy cocktail made by the biotechnology company Regeneron. He was also treated with the drug dexamethasone after his oxygen level transiently dipped. It’s been noted that dexamethasone should only be given to patients who require supplemental oxygen. He was also given a five-day course of the anti-viral remdesivir, which is supposed to shorten the period of care to 11 days.

of Covid-19. And with just 18 days left to campaign until November 3, what are his options? Of course, he can no longer downplay the pandemic as a “hoax” or “going away” when he himself is afflicted with the virus. Nobody would believe him. The virus is with us, killing thousands of Americans every day. And according to the vaccine manufacturers, the vaccine will not be ready for use until mid-2021 at the earliest. How many more Americans will be dead by then? Obviously, Trump’s contracting the virus will affect his reelection campaign. Without any valid explanation on how he’s going to deal with the pandemic this late in the game, he’s going to lose the election. The question is: Is he going to continue with his presidential run or would it be best to quit? But at any rate, the election is over unless a miracle happens.

Be creative in social and family interactions to benefit your physical and mental health The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros
A
t this time of COVID-19, when most seniors have narrower space to enjoy life because of isolation and the fear of the virus, there is a danger on their physical and mental health. We are isolated, mostly alone and the visit of the loved are too limited. "Bakit naman ganito ngayon? Wala kang mapasyalan, wala kang bisita, baka sa mga darating na araw, luka-luka na ako," one of my senior friends told me during our conversation. Yes, we are in crisis for lack of social and family interactions. Before, the officers and members of OFSAM (Original Filipino Associations of Manitoba) have been very active in social interactions and events like "Mother of the Year," "Mr. and Ms. Valentine," and "Ms. OFSAM." We also get to celebrate the birthdays of each member. Now, with this COVID-19, everything is shut down. Isolated and in some cases, alone in an apartment. Angela K.Troyer, Ph. D. C. Psycho shares that, “Socializing can provide a number of benefits to your physical and mental health. Connecting with friends may also boost your brain health and lower your risk of dementia. She added
that you may live long and will enjoy better physical and mental health.” At this time of pandemic, a senior has to be creative in social and family interaction. Though a lot are not tech savvy, they have to at least learn the basics of using a gadget and social media. "Mabuti naman at may Facebook, nagbi-video call kami ng aking mga anak sa Pilipinas, nakakausap ko ang aking mga apo,” added my senior friend. I am also a senior and I am not alone. My nephew Clarence is living with me. My son, Ron and his wife, Donna and my grandson, Lorenzo, have regular visits; so does my niece, Ellen and her husband, Ray. And even my younger son, Johnny, based in Vancouver, calls me regularly. And you must be creative and resourceful to fill the in between of their visits-writing, gardening, cooking and talking! Talking with whom? With my former UST students, colleagues, associates and classmates via Facebook. Dr. Troyer further advises to use Skype or Facetime to catch up with family and friends from a distance. Not in my wildest dream that I’d be connected again with my former UST folks. I thought after immigrating to Canada and leaving all the memories
of friendship, interacting would be impossible with them. Facebook has also done so many good benefits of interconnecting with your lost cousins and relatives. Lately, three long lost relatives and a long lost childhood friend sent me friend requests which, of course, I approved. They are now among my regular chatmates on Facebook and Skype, exchanging old stories about family, profession and life in general. To date, I think I am the only professor who is a member of eight UST Facebook chat groups. Not to mention the other social and family chat groups that I keep where social interactions are fully attained. As one of the psychologists says, “Social interaction and family interaction are number one and number two, respectively, detectors for longevity.” Furthermore, in a study of 7,000 men and women in Alameda Country, California which begun in 1965, Lisa F. Barkman and S. Leonard Syme found that "people who were disconnected from others were roughly three times more like to die during the nine-year study than people with strong social ties," John Robbins recounted in his marvelous book on health and longevity, Healthy at 100 To my fellow seniors, be creative and be resourceful. It seems that COVID-19 is still long way to vanish until a vaccine is finally found. I told my senior friend, “Phone your friends and talk about anything under the sun. Talk about the glories of chatting and dancing during the OFSAM days.”

MANILA – Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Administrator Bernard Olalia on Wednesday warned the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) against illegal recruiters particularly those engaged in third country recruitment. Olalia said unscrupulous individuals or groups are using the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to entice Filipino workers abroad by offering higher salaries. “We would like to remind our OFWs against third country recruitment. They are being offered jobs with high salaries. Avoid them, Don’t be victims,” he said during the weekly forum of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). He said illegal recruiters are using different social media platforms in offering supposedly high-paying jobs to Filipinos employed overseas. They should know the identities of those who are recruiting them,” he said. “If they were asked to pay placement fee, they should have doubts that they are being victimized by illegal recruiters.” ( Ferdinand Patinio-PNA)

The exhibition is a contactless experience, taking place over 25,000 square feet in Hall D of the convention centre . COVID ALERT APP LAUNCHED IN MANITOBA
T
he Health Canada COVID Alert app is now available to Manitoba residents and will provide digital COVID-19 exposure alerts once the app is downloaded to a smartphone, Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen announced on October 1. “With case numbers currently on the rise, the COVID Alert app is one more tool that people can use to be aware of a possible exposure to COVID-19,” said Friesen. “The introduction of the app builds on our public health contact tracing efforts to inform people of possible exposures and ensure they are given the advice they need to reduce the spread of the virus.” The national COVID Alert app uses Bluetooth technology to detect when users are near each other. If a user tests positive for COVID-19, they can choose to let other users know about potential exposure risk without sharing any personal information. Someone who tests positive for COVID-19 will be provided a onetime key from public health when they call to provide test results. By entering the key into the app, it will notify other app users who have been within two metres of a person who has

tested positive for COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes over a 24-hour period within the last 14 days. Subscribers who receive this exposure alert can then assess their risk and seek testing, if needed. The COVID Alert app does not collect personal information or health data, and does not know or track the location, name, address or contacts of any user. All aspects of the app are completely voluntary. The minister noted the COVID Alert app does not replace contact investigations. People who do not have a smartphone or device that will support the app will still receive notification from public health officials if they have positive test results or are determined to be a close contact of a confirmed case. “It’s important for people to remember that we all need to continue to focus on the fundamentals to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 to others,” said Friesen. “Stay home if you are sick, reduce your number of contacts, wash or sanitize your hands often, physically distance from others and wear a mask if you cannot, or as required in your community.” The Health Canada COVID Alert app is available at no cost in the Apple and Google Play app store. HOW FILIPINO DONORS CAN HELP PATIENTS WITH RARE BLOOD
Winnipeg Filipino community encouraged to donate as part of October blood drive
E
ven if you’ve never donated blood, you’ve likely heard of the major blood groups: A, B, O and AB. In addition to these blood groups, people’s blood can be positive or negative for something called an Rh factor, for example making them O+ or O-. But did you know your blood type is even more complex than that? “People think of just ABO and Rh, but really there are hundreds of different antigens,” says Dr. Gwen Clarke, head of the Rare Blood Program at Canadian Blood Services. When giving patients blood products, it’s important to consider their blood group to give them matched and compatible products and prevent dangerous reactions. On the surface of every red blood cell are proteins called antigens. While most patients in Canada who need a transfusion can be helped safely by considering their ABO blood type and Rh factor, some patients with unusual antigens or antigen combinations develop antibodies that could cause a dangerous immune reaction to the standard “off the shelf” blood products. Filipino donors are uniquely positioned to help patients who need a specific rare blood type called Jk3. The rarer a person’s blood type, the more difficult it is to find a donor if that person suddenly needs matched rare blood for a transfusion. Canadian Blood Services’ Rare Blood Program strives to ensure that rare blood is available for anyone in need. Canadian Blood Services is looking for donors of all ethnic backgrounds to help meet the

needs of patients in Canada. Blood type is related to ethnicity, and types that are more common in other countries may be rare in Canada. “It’s necessary from a medical and scientific perspective that our donors match our patients,” says Dr. Clarke. “People’s blood cells are not all the same, so diversity is really incredibly important.” One of the more than 30 blood group systems is the Kidd system, which involves two proteins (Jka

Their blood type, called Jk3, occurs in less than 1 per cent of people of Filipino and Polynesian descent. If someone has this rare blood type, it doesn’t cause any harm to their overall health. But if they need blood, they will need it to be matched from someone with the same rare blood type. Four to six patients in Canada need Jk3 blood each year.
Jk3 is one of the most difficult rare blood types to match, which is one reason Canadian Blood Services is always seeking blood donors of Filipino and Polynesian descent. If both your parents are of Filipino descent, please check your eligibility online at blood.ca/ eligibility. If you’re eligible, please book an appointment using blood. ca, by calling 1 888 2 DONATE (1888-236-6283) or by downloading the GiveBlood app.
Once you’ve booked, please email rarebloodprogram@blood. ca with your full name and date of birth, as well as the date/time/ location of your appointment. This will help us identify your donation for additional testing. If your blood is Jk3, we will send you a letter to inform you. Even if it’s not, you are a match for another patient in need and we hope that you will continue donating.

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
Life in the Time of Covid (Facing the New Normal)
"Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change."--Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Frankenstein One adage says that the only thing constant in this world is change. It could be classified as either positive (progressive, beneficial) or negative (destructive, damaging). Many people treat change as a welcoming experience; while others, their utter demise. Working in the corporate world of the Philippine International Convention Center for 21 years - an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays kind of job, with timely evening and weekend overtime, will actually grow on the person. Work, in this case, is not the normal desk job. It involves not only performing administrative tasks but also sashaying through client facing and servicing, ocular inspections, actual event staging, and the after-event clear-out and inspections. Cellphone batteries are burned by the minute. Events Management does have its own quirks and demands. The world stopped, and suddenly tables were turned in February 2020 with the onset of the Corona Virus (COVID). In the Philippine setting, all of a sudden, clients either postponed or cancelled events; some businesses folded up; and a big number of employees were laid off. The focus was turned to the health sector in line with the treatment
of, recovery from, and prevention of the spread of the COVID. Wear a face mask and shield. Wash your hands frequently. Do not touch your face. Sanitize… What many considered normal, is history. As a preventive measure, health and safety precautions were set at any given establishment across the country. The citizenry was mandated to wear a face mask, topped off with a face shield for full protection and to prevent the person from touching the face. The Local Government Unit of each city issued Quarantine Passes to every household for use of the only designated member in performing tasks essential to the maintenance of the home (i.e. grocery, pharmacy, banking, payments, etc.). Travel Passes issued were for those living in the outskirts of the National Capital Region but necessarily travels back and forth for work or specific errands. Travelling for leisure is not allowed. Physical distancing is in place to prevent face-to-face social contact. A distance of 6.5 feet or 2 meters should be maintained. Hence, mass gatherings and unnecessary crowding is prohibited by law. As a result, most companies opted for a 'work from home' arrangement. Due to the suspension of public transport, bicycles (battery
operated or not) and motorcycles became the fashion. Stay home! - a call imposed by the health sector paved the way for delivery/courier services to become one of the most important sectors of the society for the transport / shipping of food, personal and business packages, and at times, people who needed to go somewhere, essentially. The occurrence of the COVID, although a bane to many, became a catalyst for some in discovering and honing skills that in turn compensated for salaries that they would have normally received. Fortunate for those employees who, despite the new work arrangement, still receive compensation, albeit sans overtime pay. So what becomes of the lowly employee on alternate work arrangement? She wakes up at nearly 10 a.m, squirms a little, and falls back into a short nap. She abruptly opens her eyes widely, looks at the time, and holds that stare with amazement -- it's 11 o’clock! Her heart stops beating as she realizes it’s Monday! To have coffee and bread or whathave-yous at almost lunchtime is far from what she knew on a normal work day. She stares at the walls and ceilings and practically do nothing. Then, sleeps very late, binge-watching movies on Netflix or anything available on the boob tube. On other days, she does her work assignments. Change, however form it arrives in one’s life, will shock the system at the onset. It will take a lot of adjustment and getting used to. Float with it however manner is available, but always keep an open mind and heart. It’s all a matter of perspective. It is in that way can a person regroup thoughts and plan for one’s protection, safety, as well as, life in itself, in the new normal. This is determination and resilience at its best.

You may feel like you desperately need something, Aries, yet you're unsure as to what it is exactly. Someone close to you may be trying to fit the missing puzzle piece into place, but this may be next to impossible if it's unclear which piece is actually missing. This difficult situation may lead to frustration if you aren't careful. Feel free to admit that you feel powerless. Don't be ashamed to say so.
If you find that there's tension in a close relationship, you may get the feeling that this isn't the right partner for you, Cancer. Don't automatically assume that the problem lies in your partner. Difficult situations involving the need for love and affection are likely to emerge regardless of the situation or the company. Instead of running to the next person, take the time to work things out.
Although you may find it hard to express yourself in some ways, Libra, the one avenue that's completely wide open today is art. Difficult tension is laced with emotional insecurity, making it hard for you to express your feelings. If you feel that this is the case, find some other means of expressing these emotions. A large canvas and some paints will work quite nicely.
Be careful about being too boisterous and chipper around people who don't exactly feel the same way, Capricorn. Be sensitive to other people's feelings, and don't make jokes that are too harsh for the occasion. No one appreciates a wise guy. There's a somber mood to the day that's likely to form a dark cloud by late afternoon. Do your best to be the ray of sunshine and not the bolt of lightning.
You may want to remedy every situation by talking things out or taking some sort of action, Taurus. Be careful of making any sudden moves before you really understand what you're feeling. One minute you may be full of exuberance and ready to launch into a new project, but once you start moving forward, you're suddenly feeling insecure. Take this resistance as a sign that maybe this isn't the best time to move forward.
When tension builds, your sense of security is likely to falter, Leo. You may have a hard time dealing with other people. You could be tempted to turn to food or alcohol for inner nourishment. Curing emotional needs by indulging this way may temper your ailment for a while, but it isn't the solution to the overall problem. Work out the bugs with the people involved, and don't try to do it on an empty stomach.
You might be feeling rather insecure when it comes to your peace of mind, Scorpio. Because of the insecurity, it may seem like your relationships are on the rocks. At the same time, having problems in your relationships is making you less likely to trust these close partners with your insecure feelings. Talking about your emotions in an honest manner will help you break out of this difficult situation.
Your mood should be quite good for the most part, Aquarius, but there's apt to be some tension in your relationships. Romantic endeavors aren't exactly in your favor now, so don't force an issue that seems too difficult to resolve. Find comfort in your internal warmth. By taking the time to nurture yourself, you will inevitably have more love to give to the people around you.
Compliments are apt to feel like gold to you, Gemini. There's nothing you need more than love and affection on a day like this. Beware that you may end up as putty in the hands of whoever showers you with flattery. You may also resent this need for attention and not be willing to receive it graciously. This isn't the right attitude. Receive accolades with open arms and offer an equal amount of affection in return.
You might have difficulty expressing your needs, Virgo. The bottom line is that there's no right or wrong way, although it may be difficult to see this on a day like today. Deep-seated insecurity may make expressing yourself difficult. At a time when you feel like you should politely take things in, you really may be feeling like you want to run from the people around you.
You may feel more reserved than usual, Sagittarius, especially when it comes to romantic relationships. You may be feeling apprehensive about expressing yourself fully, even in the most intimate situations. Be careful about sending messages that suggest that you don't want to be around others. People are apt to think they're to blame for your reluctance. It's fine to be a recluse, but don't completely alienate yourself in the process.
There's a deep longing to be comforted and reassured, Pisces. You may want nothing more than for someone fix you some warm, homemade soup. If this is the case, feel free to call and ask a good friend to come over, if possible. Don't continue to play the part of the strong, independent one if this isn't the way you feel. If you aren't honest about your needs, it will be impossible for anyone to know how to fulfill them.

GMA Network’s ‘I Can See You: The Promise’ captures love in its truest form
Paolo, Benjamin, Yasmien and Maey Bautista
Where do you draw the line to your promise of eternal love to someone who has already passed away? Will you continue to bind yourself to a love that’s gone or will you welcome a new love that’s just waiting to unfold? The original drama introduces the fresh ensemble cast – beautiful and multi-talented actress Andrea Torres, award-winning actress Yasmien Kurdi, hunk actor Benjamin Alves and versatile actor Paolo Contis. In observance of anti-COVID-19 protocols alongside the Network’s precautionary measures, the cast and crew of the show underwent RT-PCR tests, lock-in tapings and strictly practiced government-mandated safety and health protocols on the set. Andrea shares that her trust in the network and their team to keep them safe prompted her to enjoy the taping, “Trust your network and production team dahil pinaghahandaan nila ang lahat. Actually, na-enjoy namin ‘yung taping namin. Umuwi kaming masaya hanggang ngayon, looking forward na ako sa next kong work.” Benjamin also commends the precautionary measures taken by GMA and the production team to safeguard everyone on set, “We were one of the first productions to start taping in GMA, as far as the teledrama. It was good and it was a great stepping stone for everyone else to start going. We really thank the network and production for making sure that we are safe and that we were able to perform without worrying about anything else.” Meanwhile, Yasmien expresses her admiration to her co-actor Paolo for lightening up the mood on set, “Kapag katrabaho mo si Kuya Paolo,

sobrang gaan ng trabaho. Dahil pinapa-lighten up niya ‘yung mood ng lahat ng tao sa set including ‘yung production and staff.” Paolo, who recalls being tended to by his seniors, believes that it is his duty to look after everyone on set, “Naranasan ko noon, ‘yung mga kuya ko sa set they take it upon themselves to lead the set. Dahil ako ‘yung parang ‘senior’ dito, I bring food and check on everyone. More than anything else, I want the set to be happy.” The story begins with a rich widowed man named Frank (Paolo) who loses his passion for life and becomes a recluse after losing his wife Clarisse (Yasmien) from an accident. When Jude (Benjamin), his cousin and right-hand man in the company, visits him in the lake house where he stays at, Frank takes an interest in the latter’s girlfriend Ivy (Andrea), an aspiring artist who is willing to do anything to take her family out of poverty. As Ivy starts to exhibit certain characteristics of Clarisse, will Frank be able to see Ivy for who she is or will he continue to hold on to the spirit of his deceased wife? Also playing an exciting role in this series is Maey Bautista as Rowena Marquez, Frank’s cheerful house helper who is a witness to the latter’s undying love for his deceased wife. Catch the premiere of ‘I Can See You: The Promise’ - under the helm of esteemed director Zig Dulay - beginning October 5 which also airs abroad on GMA Pinoy TV. he summer of 2020 has proven to be one of the best times to experience what has been in our own backyard all along due to COVID-19 not knowing how long our travel advisories to faroff places will be in effect. Think beyond the popular destinations and immerse in the great outdoors that Manitoba has to offer. Travel Manitoba has unveiled the new slogan for our province: “Home is where the heart is”. Now is the time to show Manitoba some love so find your heart in our prarie province of Manitoba and discover new places to explore and experience. And don’t forget to observe sanitizing, masking and distancing. Actually before the pandemic Manitoba was named by the world’s top travel experts as the No. 1 emerging North American travel destination for 2019 – “It’s a natural paradise where you can kayak alongside beluga whales in the arctic, lock eyes with a wild polar bear in Churchill, or spend your night in awe of the Northern Lights”. And even before this, i.e., in 2016, our own City of Winnipeg had been chosen as one of National Geographic’s Best Trips of 2016 – the only Canadian city to make
the list. Take pride Winnipeg! The international magazine called the River City a “multicultural, multilingual metropolis of 800,000” . The cold was mentioned though. Mosquitoes? No! Visiting and exploring the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, our No. 1 in the bucket list, is a great start, an amazing encounter with human rights as a “journey of inspiration from darkness to light”. Another must-ee-um is the Lower Fort Garry, the national historic site on the banks of the Red River featuring original buildings dating as far back as the 1830s. This fur trade fort was the site of the signing of Treaty No. 1, the first of Canada’s numbered treaties dealing with the First Nations. Because of covid-19 the visitor centre and historic buildings remain closed to the public though it offers now a new visitor experience, "A Walk Through History" outdoor walking experience. Hopefully soon access will be back to normal. About one and a half hour-drive north from Winnipeg via MB-7 N and MB 17 N is the Narcisse Snake Dens, the world’s largest concentration of red-sided garter snakes. The dens are the winter homes of tens of thousands of this

particular types of snakes. During spring the snakes come up from these dens to the snake pits where they mate, and for the summer they disperse into the nearby marshes. The snakes return in the fall. Best time to visit the dens is during the latter part of April or the first three weeks of May. Make a little pilgrimage to a shrine or go camping in St. Malo by taking provincial hwy. 59 South. St. Malo is a bustling community of bilingual francophone Metis and Quebecois heritage dating back to 1892. Visit the Grotto, a reproduction of the grotto in Lourdes, France, located along the Rat River. The river is also a part of the St. Malo Provincial Park where a reservoir, a man-made St. Malo Lake, makes for a perfect family-friendly beach. In winter, the park is a great crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing destination. And every February the community hosts the St. Malo Festival of Friends. Worth a visit is the small town of Souris, home to Canada’s historic longest suspension (cable-stayed) footbridge, known as the “Swinging Bridge” with a capacity load of 1,000 people and measuring 184 meters long spanning the Souris River that divides the town of 1,837 residents. Although a very small town Souris boasts three museums that preserve its historical heritage. Experience the sensation of walking over the swinging bridge from one end to the other! How to go there? Trans Canada Hwy. 1 West just past Brandon and turn left to provincial road #250 to Souris. From Winnipeg you’ll be there in about 2 and a half hours. With so much more yet to explore we’re taking one or two or several at a time! No passport yet but we’ll keep on travelling!
