Catching Up with Pearl of the Orient Ambassadors: Pavilion Hopping Highlights
As Folklorama heads into Week 2, the Pearl of the Orient Pavilion ambassadors have been hopping from pavilion to pavilion. With a mission to experience the diverse traditions and celebrations of cultures from around the world, the ambassadors have been busy exploring, learning, and connecting. We caught up with them to discover which pavilions left the strongest impressions and to uncover the
surprises they encountered along the way.
From Josiah Dalayoan I enjoyed the Korean Pavilion a lot, with their smaller space compared to others, they managed to fit a lot in and more! Along with their food and variety of Dances ranging from K-pop to Drumming, it was a fantastic show!
Growing up with Magdaragat,
Twelve Languages. Six Locations. One Goal: To Serve Your Needs.
it was all I knew and now being able to see other pavilions, I can appreciate what makes each pavilion unique and the amazing things we can do with smaller spaces.
From Yasmin Reyes Best pavilion so far: Egypt ! ! Very talented dancers and stunning costumes
Biggest surprise: all the similarities in the dance moves of some pavilions. Seeing how much cultures share and how they can relate to each other is very interesting
From Anne Oserin-Pinnock Best pavilion so far: Caribbean. Its so fun and bright and lively. Biggest surprise as ambassador: The sheer number of volunteers that support folklorama. Our pavilion alone has over 400 volunteers. It’s such an amazing outpouring of love and support and we appreciate them all so much.
Fr Maribel Abrenica Best pavilion Portugal - the energy, the intricate dance steps, the choreography, how they treated the VIP, amazing! Biggest surprise as ambassador: surprised to find the number of invited groups from different places that are invited/brought in to perform during Folklorama. We have been fortunate that our group consists of local talent, and we have also been privileged to bring in guest performers.

Lupa ay Buhay | Land is Life: A Filipino Craft Exhibition
Lupa ay Buhay | Land is Life is an exhibition showcasing Filipino culture through its rich craft traditions across the archipelago, including textile weaving and beaded jewelry from the Igorot of Northern Luzon and the Lumad of Mindanao, delicately embroidered Barong (men’s traditional shirt) and Baro’t Saya (women’s traditional clothing), woven Salakot (hat), and many more.
Land is central to our material culture and heritage. We borrow the phrase Lupa ay Buhay from Indigenous peoples and farmers movements in the Philippines to deliver the message that land is
life and it is sacred. Therefore, it must be protected. A Philippine Indigenous women’s organization called Teduray Lambangian Women’s Organization puts it simply:
"Sapangkat ang lupa ay buhay, ito ay itinuturing naming sagrado. At sa unti-unti nitong pagkasira ay unti-unti din kaming namamatay."
"Because land is life, we treat it as sacred. And its gradual destruction is also our gradual death."
The raw materials used in traditional Filipino craft, like many other Indigenous craft practices around the world, are taken and grown from the land. Filipino farmers grow abaca (banana leaves) and piña
(pineapple), which are two major fibers used in Philippine textiles. In a time where almost everything is commodified, these craft traditions become difficult to sustain, especially in the face of environmental calamities and the lack of socio-economic support for Indigenous peoples, farmers, and artisans in the Philippines. Craft making not only is a way of life that is passed down from generation to generation, but it is now also a source of livelihood for communities to survive.
Lupa ay Buhay | Land is Life shows the colorful tapestry of culture and diversity of the land in which Filipinos in the diaspora call home. It shows the ingenuity and creativity of our people. It is our hope that through this exhibit, people are able to connect to the land where the works here originate.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution
(& closely related styles) part 67
Imay have been championing the fact that New Wave has long surpassed the status of being just an era into becoming an established genre, but I acknowledge that the 1980s was the height of its glory days. After all, just like in the stages of human development, one's younghood is generally the most memorable and exciting. And the said decade may be regarded as New Wave's heyday.
In recognition of that, here's another set of albums, all released in 1983, that best defined not only the sound but also the looks of the mid-'80s phase of New Wave.

* Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual ("Girls Just Want to Have Fun")
* Duran Duran - Seven and the Ragged Tiger ("New Moon on Monday")

* The Police - Synchronicity ("Evrry Breath You Take")

It was quite short notice – less than three weeks to organize bringing Donita Rose to Winnipeg, selling tickets, and hosting a unique show for the guests. Initially, articulating my vision was challenging, and assembling everything was even more difficult. However, as the event approached and I delved deeper into the preparations, I realized that it was a task that must be done exceptionally well.
In January, I met Donita Rose and Felson at a Saladmaster event in Las Vegas, where she discussed her culinary expertise and her ambition to present Filipino cuisine in a new light. She aimed to showcase it in a way that would be globally appealing, attractive, and unforgettable. Her curated dishes and tasting experience menu captured my interest, aligning perfectly with my vision of inspiring healthy home-cooking to a wider audience. When Donita later confirmed her availability, I agreed without hesitation. I then enlisted the support of The Green Apron, and fortunately, received the nod of the "tres marias:" Maria Tan, Teresa Mallare, and Lydia Ibarrola. The pivotal moment came when Teresa, who works at Radisson Downtown Winnipeg, suggested involving Chef Keith Chacon, the Executive Chef. After deliberation, Chef Keith partnered with Canads Inn's Corporate Chef, Jason Perfumo, forming a cohesive team.
When Donita Rose arrived, she was pleased with the setup and the support, and the event unfolded smoothly! With over 80 guests in attendance, the degustation experience showcased a fusion of Filipino and Asian flavors, each plate more enticing and exciting than the last. Donita, Chef Keith, and I demonstrated live cooking, preparing small batches cooked in Saladmaster before serving the courses to the guests.
Several dishes stood out as favorites, including the palabok with pork floss and cilantro oil, the
sinigang shrimp shooter, the refreshing granita rose, and the unique taho with salted caramel and crispy rice topping. Chef Keith's twist on Dinakdakan, using pork belly and foie gras instead of liver, was a hit. The guests left satisfied after the eight-course meal. We highlighted Saladmaster cookware to introduce the science and art of cooking with such ease and convenience to our guests. Donita, exuding a lively spirit, mingled with the guests to the tune of Madonna's "Like a Virgin," making new friends and connections in Winnipeg.
The evening was a stellar display of entertainment, blending culinary delights, joy, and a touch of stardom. Beyond the entertainment, there was a deeper purpose: to elevate and refine the perception of Filipino cuisine and the experiences associated with it. While many ethnic cuisines have gained recognition in the mainstream market, we believe Filipino cuisine deserves more attention to reach a similar level of acclaim. We are much more than an adobo nation and we have a deep and rich culinary history. In fact, Anthony Bourdaine once said that Filipino food is the “next best thing.” With the work we have started and with many more initiatives that I’m sure are being done in the community, the question is: what s next? On a personal note, I am committed to moving forward. My initial step in that direction involves creating a specialty coffee table cookbook that I envision gracing
tables across Manitoba and beyond. My goal is to enlist the support of 100 Filipino food enthusiasts and chefs to have this cookbook published in time for the festive season this year. Food is connected to our culture and
Whether it’s the splash of the waves that draw you in or the long stretches of sandy beaches, the magic of Manitoba’s many lakes await. Picture the joy of a sun-soaked day, the feel of soft sand beneath your feet and the tranquility of a beachside sunset. Manitoba’s beaches are perfect for families, where every visit is a new adventure
with unforgettable memories.
