128 days of Christmas PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

I

F THERE IS ONE thing that I really miss in the Philippines, it is Christmas. It’s a day – nay, four months – of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Yes, Filipinos celebrate Christmas from September 1 to January 6, the Day of the Epiphany. It’s called the “Ber Months” because they all end with “Ber” --September, October, November, and December. It’s the longest Christmas season in the world. The season starts in earnest and picks up in December when most Filipinos will be in a festive spirit. The Philippines has the largest population of Catholics (about 80%) and arguably the most religious. Going to mass on Sundays is a special day for Filipinos. Churches are jam-packed with people – young and old. And Filipinos observe the Sabbath as God has commanded in his fourth commandment: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. For Catholics, Sunday is the Sabbath day. It’s a day of rest and worship. The four preceding Sundays mark the Advent, a period of spiritual preparation in which many Christians make themselves ready for the coming, or birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrating Advent involves a season of prayer, fasting, and abstinence (no meat on Fridays), and repentance. It is followed by anticipation, hope, and joy. But make no mistake, Filipinos start observing these Christian traditions way back in September. Indeed, Christmas in the Philippines is truly one of a kind. The overwhelming amount of food and presents, it’s time to celebrate family, friends, and community. It’s also time to renew old friendships. Most family reunions, school reunions, and office reunions happen during the Christmas season.

The Philippines also has adopted western traditions such as Santa Claus, Christmas trees, Christmas cards, and Christmas carols. And come September the first to go up are the nativity scenes – called the “Belen.” Most Filipino households will have their Belen set up early to signify the start of the Christmas festivity. Some towns hold competitions for the best Belen. A complete set of Belen is composed of baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the Three Kings. Some Belens have shepherds and barn animals. Then the Christmas lanterns – parols -- start showing up in the windows of homes. The parol is a Christmas ornament unique in the Philippines and it is one of the most significant and oldest Christmas traditions in the country. It’s commonly star-shaped but they could come in every shape, color, and material imaginable. The parol was originally made to hang on lamp posts to guide mass-goers to Simbang Gabi -- which starts on December 16 -- but now the parol can be found everywhere like outside houses, in malls, and offices. Simbang Gabi means “Night Mass.” Filipinos attend mass nine days before Christmas either at night or in the early hours of the morning. It’s a religious practice and Filipinos believe that attending all nine masses will grant them their wishes. Getting up for Simbang Gabi makes you hungry. The two most popular treats are rice cakes (bibingka and puto bumbong), two delicacies that Filipinos love. They usually are sold outside churches after mass. Simbang Gabi is also one of the longest running traditions in the country. This is a “must” for any devoted Christian to do,

which is one of the most cultural experiences you can get. It is done to honor the Virgin Mary and the farmers who worked in the country during the Spanish colonization of the country. The farmers worked very early in the morning to avoid the heat of the sun at noon. Caroling is very popular in the Philippines. Filipino kids form groups called “cumbanchero” and they go from house to house with their makeshift instruments. The adults are more formalized with some groups wearing a uniform of the same color and style. Of course the favorite color is red. Although caroling is a western tradition, it has become very popular among adults. The caroling group usually starts practicing in November. They get together every week on a Friday or Saturday evening at one of the members’ houses. As usual it’s a potluck and everybody brings his or her favorite food. They practice for two to three hours and then eat their food with gusto. It’s another feast day! That’s the fun part of it. Meanwhile, they start contacting their friends and ask for permission to carol on a certain day, beginning on December 1. On caroling days, they assemble in one of the members’ house and then they all travel to the host’s house together. At the host’s home, they form a semi-circle and sing using their songbooks. The caroling leader will give an extemporaneous speech thanking the host(s) for allowing

them to carol in their home. Then the group sings for about 30 to 45 minutes. The group leader will speak again and call upon the host(s) to present them with a gift from the carolers. The host(s) will receive the gift and in turn present the carolers with an envelope containing some money. Normally, the host(s) have prepared a sumptuous buffet dinner for the carolers. After dinner, carolers thank the host(s) and make their exit, singing, “We wish you a Merry Christmas…” This routine is repeated about two or three times each night until December 23. Just imagine how much money the group would raise for the 13 days of caroling. They would then donate the money to their favorite charities or their parish church, leaving some amount to fund their own projects. Thus ends the time-honored ritual of receiving and giving gifts on Christmas. On Christmas Eve, most Filipinos will wake up at midnight to welcome Christmas Day with Noche Buena, a feast of traditional Filipino Christmas dishes like lechon, hamon, queso de bola, spaghetti, and fruit salad. Then on Christmas Day, a special mass called Misa de Gallo is held. It’s a celebration that includes lighting candles, singing, and sometimes a re-enactment of how baby Jesus was born. Exchanging gifts is something that Filipinos; particularly the kids look forward to. Sometimes, gifts are exchanged on numbers picked from a bowl. So nobody knows from whom the gifts are from. So it’s important to select a gift that is gender-neutral because you don’t know who would end up with it.

But to your godchildren – manitos and manitas – the aguinaldo that godfathers and godmothers give to their godchildren involve cash in an envelope, in addition to special gifts that they asked from them. It is customary for ninongs and ninangs to ask their godchildren what do they want for Christmas. And you’d better not disappoint them. New Year’s eve is a celebration to welcome the New Year. Again, a feast called Media Noche is served. And as midnight approaches, everybody joins in making loud noises – torotot, sparklers, firecrackers, and other noisy instruments -- when the clock strikes midnight. Young kids are encouraged to jump up and down so they’ll grow taller. Neighbors will bring out fireworks in the streets and begin their noisy celebration. For about 15 minutes, the whole neighborhood is aglow with fireworks – like the “bawangs” that produce a loud and dangerous explosion -- on the streets. Filipinos believe that loud noises deter evil spirits from entering the New Year, thus the noisier the better. Also, husbands and wives and their children kiss each other as a sign of affection. And finally, the Feast of the Three Kings or the Epiphany. It’s commemorated on January 6th or the “Twelfth Day” after Christmas. The 12 days between Christmas and Epiphany are known as the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” But in the Philippines, it’s “128 Days of Christmas.” Merry Christmas to all my PerryScope readers and have a wonderful and prosperous New Year!

Practice kind and firm positive parenting Babies come into the world with little or no knowledge about it. Yes, they do have those basic instincts that lie in our genes, but little else. To be a good parent, it's super important to remember that most of what they learn as toddlers... they learn from us! That is why it's so important to practice kind and firm positive parenting. We must always (always!) take into account our children's emotions. And we must respond to them with kindness, even when the emotion is negative. This will teach them that we are there for them if needed, and the bond will be strengthened. It can be a challenge to stay calm when a child is throwing a tantrum... but we have to make it through. The best way to deal with these situations is to be kind, while also teaching the child that there are better ways to express emotions. "Honey, I know you're very upset. What made you angry? Tell me without yelling."

One of the rules of Parenting 101 is to never invalidate our children's emotions. This way they will learn that what they feel is legitimate and they can come to us when they feel bad (or good, to share their happiness!). What about firm education? Discipline is often seen as a bad thing, but nothing could be further from the truth. We can't base our children's education solely on punishment and discipline - that's a terrible mistake! The reality is that many studies show that a democratic educational style allows our children to develop more positively and healthily. And how do we achieve this? Quite simply. We are the parents. We make the rules. But we can be wrong. Recognizing our mistakes is the first step towards becoming the best parents we can be. Sometimes our children may totally disagree with the rules we want to set. And it's good for the family bond to hear what they have to say about it.

Okay, if you set a curfew for your 13-year-old son at 10 p.m. and he wants to be back at 12 p.m., you might be able to come to an agreement. "At half-past ten, you have to be home." Or not. The important thing is not so much to resolve the conflict as to hear his side

of the story. Sometimes we forget that we were children ourselves... and some of our parents' rules or habits irritated us. All rules and limits that are established should be based on mutual respect, active listening, and affection.

This guarantees a higher probability of happiness and positive development for our children, which in the end is what we are looking for.

If you know how to balance things in your life, if you are very focused and know your priorities, you wouldn't have to give up one thing just to make yourself happy," Bella added. Before the vlog ended, Bela also clarified speculations about her being "pregnant.' "I'm not pregnant. I'm just enjoying my life. Not everyone who moves to a different country is pregnant. "I Will Put A Finance Guy In Philhealth." - Mayor Isko Moreno Manila Mayor and presidentiable Isko Moreno said in a press conference in Iloilo on December 15, that if he wins the 2022 elections, he will pick the right person to lead the country's health insurer, PhilHealth. Moreno said that the leadership in PhilHealth does not lie in the hands of a doctor or a retiree, not necessarily mentioning Duterte's previous assignments in the department. “The leadership of PhilHealth and top executive, maglalagay ako ng finance guy. Hindi komo PhilHealth ay health ang pinag-uusapan, it’s finances. Pera ‘yan ng mga miyembro. Dapat ‘yang pera na ‘yan lumalago, pinapalago,” said Moreno. The presidential aspirant added that he would choose someone young and well -versed in the science of managing money. Moreno, along with his VP running mate Willie Ong, also encourage the use of online platform to make filing and processing of claims easier, just like the Go Manila app in the City of Manila.

Presidential aspirant Senator Manny Paquio said in a media press conference on December 15h at the Tagum City Hall , that he is against the proposal to allow divorce in the country . Saying that marriage is sacred and that it requires ultimate devotion and understanding for married couple, the presidentaible was his wife Jinkee, whom he has expressed his gratitude for her support including his quest for presidency. “Very supportive yang asawa ko at kahit saan ako magpunta ay nakasuporta palagi,” Pacquiao said.

If he wins the election, Pacquiao said that his administration will not stop legislators from filing bills on divorce but he would not support its passage. “Against ako sa divorce kasi pinag-isa kayo ng Panginoon. Sabi nga sa bible what has God joined together, let man not separate. Sacred kasi yang pag-aasawa. Kaya nga may counseling muna bago ka mag-asawa dahil papasok kayo sa isang lifetime commitment." said Pacquiao.

The new interim head coach of the Jets will be Dave Lowry and he debuts when the Jets play the Washington Capitals on Friday night at Canada Life Centre. The visiting Washington Capitals put on a show for Dave Lowry's debut as Jets' interim head coach. Manitoba tightens public health orders amid rise in Omicron variant cases

Due to the increased threat of the omicron variant of concern, rising COVID-19 cases and a growing strain on the health-care system, Manitoba is taking additional steps to help curb the spread of the virus in the fourth wave of the pandemic, Health and Seniors Care Minister Audrey Gordon and Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer. “We are taking the advice of our public health officials to put new measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and protect each other from this virus and the omicron variant,” said Gordon. “This is difficult, especially around

the holidays, but it is a necessary step. Once again, we must ask Manitobans to do more. In addition to following these new orders, I encourage every Manitoban eligible to get their first, second or third dose to keep themselves safe.” The new restrictions include: • private indoor gatherings are limited to 10 additional people plus the household if all are fully vaccinated (youth aged 12 and under are exempt); • private indoor gatherings are limited to five additional people plus the household if any of the individuals are eligible but unvaccinated (youth aged 12

and under are exempt); • indoor and outdoor sporting and recreation capacity is reduced to 50 per cent for spectators, while games and practices can continue no tournaments will be permitted; • large group gatherings will be limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of immunization; • gyms, movie theatres, museums and libraries are limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of immunization required everywhere except libraries; • restaurants and licensed premises are limited to 50 per cent capacity and seated service

only with a maximum of 10 people per table and proof of immunization required; and • faith-based gatherings are limited to 50 per cent capacity with proof of vaccination, or 25 per cent capacity or a total of 25 people, whichever is lower, when proof of vaccination is not required. “We are seeing concerning numbers now, particularly with the omicron variant,” said Roussin. “Projections clearly show more challenges ahead for our individual health, to our communities and for our health-care system as a whole. We need to take further steps to

curb the situation. Thank you to all Manitobans who are following the public health orders, focusing on the fundamentals and choosing to be vaccinated. It is frustrating to be here again but I know we will step up to make these necessary changes, together.” The orders go into effect on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 12:01 a.m. and expire on Jan. 11, 2022. The updated orders keep the Pandemic Response System at Restricted (Orange) with schools at Caution (Yellow). All other public health orders remain unchanged. Filipina - Canadian Erika Casupanan Survivor 41 Winner

Maligayang Pasko at Masaganang Bagong Taon Wab Kinew

Filipina-Canadian Erika Casupanan from Niagara Falls, Ontario won as the sole survivor of the hit reality show, Survivor. She is just one of the 15 female winners since the reality show premiered in 2000. In a TV interview, Erika shared her lamb to lion strategy. "I really came in deciding to be that lion dressed as a lamb. I wanted to fly under the radar, let people underestimate me, figure out

who's in power, take that power at the right time and I really believe that I did that." Fans and supporters were happy to see a fresh face emerged as the winner. And for those joining in the next season, the 32-year old Casupanan, has one advice. "The biggest thing is to know who you are and that includes what you're good at , what you're not so good at, take that all in, own it and use that to your own advantage."

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim

"What doesn't kill you make you stronger"--Friedrich Nietzsche, German philosopher As year 2021 comes to a close, and in year two of the COVID pandemic, we can't help but look into the lives of humans, in general, and how many fared in the process. Humans experience life differently. Some may seem "lucky" because they appear to have more wealth, while others struggle from hand to mouth. Wealth is just one factor which, for me, is manifested widely whether materially or through expression of thoughts and emotions. One can actually be "wealthy" in many ways. Luck or the lack thereof, on the other hand, I believe, is just a result of what one already possesses psychologically and/or physically. It comes around in one's orbit either as a reward or a factor in life to be improved or learned from. Coincidentally, lives were lost. To be honest, some economic factors went down with it, and emotions were not the only ones that were drained. How does one regain financial stability after such losses; all the more if that person provided the economic balance along with you? Life is never easy; more so, when there are young children involved who still do not have the capacity to earn and contribute to the financial upkeep of the family. Thanks to the COVID pandemic, which has mutated into different variants in the two years that it has been around; the vulnerability as well as resilience of humans is continually being challenged. In retrospect, many have been affected even at the onset of the COVID virus. Due to fear and loss of patrons/clients/customers, many

companies closed shop / discontinued services, and quantities of people lost their jobs. As many were afraid that they have now become illequipped financially, the sanest to the most eccentric suggestions have been considered options to regain economic balance. One said jokingly,

"Hóldapin ko na kayâ itóng bángko sa kánto? [What if I just rob the bank around the corner?]"

Zany indeed! But thanks to social media in the likes of Facebook,

Youtube, TikTok, Instagram, and many other platforms--people now have a better option. A diverse number of them around the world who possess a huge amount of confidence discovered that they have talents and skills to teach and educate others, as well as to entertain. This, of course, has now become a rewarding income for them and their families. Based on some documentaries, the income from publishing content on social media actually pays more than what a simple employee would normally receive.

Who wouldn't want that? It is just a positive note that crimes against people and involving homes seem not too rampant at this time. Maybe the pandemic has changed the mindset of even the vile ones. On the part of long-distance relationships, couples who have held on for two years are encouraged to endure as another year is foreseen for the pandemic; but hopefully, more relaxed rules and regulations may allow travel and physical togetherness. This is the norm today, as most of the people are at home to prevent the spread of the COVID. In like manner, it has been a general observation that many are glued to their electronic devices for a myriad reasons. This makes the spread of information and knowledge easier; and due to its nature, farther. It is now the viewer's discretion which content to choose or subscribe to. This is the current and common global setup, but I do believe that it will change anew as the world is ushered back to a certain type of new normal. COVID is now part of this generation's lives until such time when another genius arises to alleviate us of the dreaded diseases that result from it. As the world changes, human beings and everything else about humanity, I believe, should follow suit. Any aversion will just cause conflict, making the ensuing adjustment difficult. Humans have the propensity to adapt, although some people may seem to adjust slowly than others. After all, every human being is wired differently. The attitude of each towards life and the manner of which one should preserve it varies. Progress, I believe, should not be measured by how fast or slow a person goes. What's important is that improvements are made--no matter how little they are--one step at a time.

Just like most typical stories of women in abusive relationships, Pia too, admitted that she stopped her life and gave her everything for her then-boyfriend because she was manipulated. “I was
