TIME TO GET OUTSIDE It's been cold lately in Winnipeg and that didn't stop the Linsangan Family from enjoying outdoor winter activities last weekend at The Forks which included tobogganing and warm mini-donuts. Here's a bucket list of outdoor winter adventures and activities you can find all across Manitoba - snow maze, skating on a pond/river or outdoor rink, skiing, building a snow fort, or try building an igloo. Most importantly, bundle up with warm and comfortable clothing and enjoy winter. Page 7►

Getting Acquainted with Social Vampires Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
COVID times and you met someone online. Basing on his profile picture he appears to be lean, slender, and neat. Digging more into the person and from the pictures of his travels and group photos he shared via social media, he seems to have many friends and takes good care of himself. Exchanges with him shows that he is knowledgable of many things and conversations with him is often smooth..... Cool! Sounds promising. But as always, knowing a person online is way different than being in person. For one, communication is filteredthe speakers often don't see each other. In some cases, the tendency of both speakers is to put their best foot forward. It is easier to convey thoughts just typing away since when not satisfied with how the intended response is expressed, it is always convenient to just erase and make a do-over. Having established a level of confidence, both parties agree to meet and seal their relationship. As time went on, the other feels like the relationship seems to not be satisfying; being around the person feels draining, and eventually, boredom set in. Conversations have grown bad, as the trend of communication always geared towards one half of the relationship. This kind of situation expunges
one's energy three ways: physically, emotionally, and socially. It might, in some way, even take out one's confidence and self worth. Social vampires are those people who talk about themselves forever. They are the ones who overpower others in the entire conversation with unrelated anecdotes, unsolicited advice, and don’t listen to anything anyone else is saying. They may even forget that there are others in the conversation at all while they talk and talk and talk incessantly and don't seem to tire from it. They are the ones who do not give high regard for house rules as they have the tendency to overstay as those who are usually the last leave in a party or gathering. On one hand, they are the kinds of people who are initially exciting; they talk a lot, a wealth of wonder, they seem to know a lot, and it was their assertiveness and confidence that attracted us to them in the first place. This would diminish in time as one would feel utterly frustrated. Be this as it may, as each one is wired differently, this does not hold true for everyone. Truth be told, on the part of the person himself, some of those who share in the same trait may not be aware of how they are so in any given social circumstance, it could be that he may not find

his behavior to be malicious or ill-intended. Social vampires are among us: family, friends, acquaintances, partner, etc., but while it seems like they can't be avoided, there are ways to limit exposure to such characters in a way that won't have a negative effect on both parties: 1. Set Boundaries - Voice out your current social treshhold how you may be feeling at the moment for them to respect your current state. 2. Let them know when they have over stepped in some way- They should realize that what they have done/ doing does not sit well with your own person. 3. Invite them for an activity that would only limit your exposure to them so they would know that their time with you is limited. This takes into account how they would feel and not to appear as if you want to get rid of them right that very instant. Start by bearing in mind the amount of good the relationship has brought into your life. However, if it seems like the other person does not acknowledge the negative effect on your wellbeing after all, it may be time to break away. Once it has been identified as such, no one can force anyone to stay with a social vampire. It is still the own person's decision. It won't hurt to be rational, would it? Remember that there is a need to re-energize after being exposed to social vampires who may have drained us of our energy. Nothing beats an effective communication. Believe you me, if your partner doesn't seem like he has something to say, there is a way to bring out and establish a good balanced conversation for a win-win kind of situation. We all know, in our heart of hearts, the kind of people we should be surrounding ourselves with on a daily basis (friends, colleagues, partner, and family members) are the type who would energize us with their presence, as well as generate warmth and positivity. They are those who should help give that boost of confidence and make us feel good about ourselves. Needless to say, the people whom we choose are those who would listen to our every word. *Currently working at the Philippine International Convention Center, where she began services 22 years ago, Kathryn Valladolid Ebrahim is an alumna of St. Scholastica's College–Manila; she finished a degree in Bachelor of Arts, major in Sociology, at the University of Santó Tomás; drawing and writing are her primary avocations.

Angelica Panganiban’s public reminder in voting: "Huwag sa magnanakaw." Trended in a Facebook page group on February 01, 2022, Angelica Panganiban shared a collaborative video with the nongovernment organization Young Public Servants. She recalled her experiences with cheaters while giving the public advice in choosing the right candidate to vote for in the upcoming May 2022 elections. In the clip, Panganiban recounted how she had been cheated on in her past relationships, noting how like her, the public does not deserve to be fooled by cheaters. Fellow celebrities commended Panganiban as seen on their respective Instagram stories. The actress then urged the public to carefully examine the candidates who are “courting” for their votes, stressing how we should avoid falling for “thieves.”
Diether Ocampo injured in a car accident
E
arly Friday morning February 04, 2022, Actor Diether Ocampo was rushed to a hospital after sustaining injuries following a vehicular accident along Osmeña Highway. A Teleradyo report said Ocampo was riding his SUV along Osmeña Highway in Makati City

not notice. The Philippine Red Cross immediately responded to the scene and brought Ocampo to the hospital. It seemed like he was resisting, he did not want to be brought to the hospital. He is positive, under the influence of alcohol.

No attempt to evade arrest - Dee’s Camp
C
ontrary to certain media reports, the camp of Enchong Dee has clarified that the actor did not make any attempt to evade arrest amid the pending cyber libel lawsuit filed against him by party-list representative Claudine Bautista-Lim. As per statement on Dee’s Instagram, he has been attending to his professional and personal commitments in the past couple of days. As a show of respect for the rule of law, he voluntarily submitted himself to the authorities and posted bail.
He reportedly surrendered at the National Bureau of Investigation in Quezon City last January 31, 2022, after authorities failed to serve a warrant of arrest last week, January. 26, in his declared address in Cubao. Dee was detained for some time as he posted bail beyond the bureau’s office hours. He was released after his papers were processed past 9 p.m. the same day. The actor will be taking “appropriate and necessary legal steps” to defend himself in the pending lawsuit.

Alden Richards: My life before showbiz and why I established AR Foundation After the successful virtual concert “Alden’s Reality,” Asia’s Multimedia Star Alden Richards gave his fans another treat via his documentary concert “ForwARd: Meet Richard R. Faulkerson, Jr.” held last January 30. In an exclusive interview with Tonie Pua for “Stronger Together: GMA Pinoy TV Podcast,” Alden said that proceeds of the virtual concert will benefit the AR Foundation which gives scholarships and financial assistance to eligible students. “I’m very happy kasi mas marami po tayong matutulungan na mga bata and mas mawa-widen po ‘yung reach natin to help these kids.” Alden admits that he also had his fair share of hardships before he entered showbiz. “Growing up gusto ko po talagang maging piloto but wala naman po kaming pambayad ng tuition fee for the course. Opo mahal po siya. Mahirap mag-aral, that time kasi we’re really struggling financially. I still chose to study and you know, do part time sa pagko-commercial and print ad, for me to be able to send myself to school.” Alden cannot forget his careerdefining moment when he chose to go to the audition of the Kapuso telefantasya “Alakdana” rather than attend his Physical Education class. “That day po is my last day sa PE class na kapag hindi ko pa po pinasukan, babagsak na po ako. Ewan ko po, leap of faith, pumunta po ako sa audition. Late po ako nu‘n kasi nagko-commute lang po ako nu‘n galing sa Laguna. Audition po pala ‘yun para sa leading man ni Louise Delos Reyes and apparently ako po ‘yung nakuha for the soap and since then po ‘yun na po ‘yung start ng lahat up to this day.” Though he did not finish his degree in college, Alden does not regret entering the entertainment industry, as it was his mother’s ultimate dream-- to see him as a successful actor someday. “Si Mama po kasi mahilig siyang manuod ng GMA. One day gusto niya daw akong makitang nakasakay sa kabayo parang si Sergio so siya po talaga, ‘yung nag-push sa akin na kaya ko daw po and may future daw po ako sa pag aartista.” But unfortunately, his mom died in 2008. “The sad part about that kasi hindi na po naabutan ni mama kahit first play ko po sa school. I mean lahat ng pinangarap niya sa ‘kin wala siyang nakita kahit isa. Pero I’m sure nakikita niya naman

‘yun sa langit. I think sa lahat po ng decisions na ginagawa ko since I started showbizness, she was there to help me make it.” Now that he has been holding both fame and fortune, Alden believes that it is his responsibility to share his blessings with some friends in the industry who are in need especially those who lost their jobs during the pandemic. “Because I'm very blessed with so much. I've been very blessed in my race in the industry and these people who I am also helping po na kasama ko sa industriya , they deserve it. Parang, since they're good friends of mine as well, I see to it na kahit papano in my small way makatulong man lang po ako sa kanila. In his upcoming documentary concert, Alden will introduce Richard Faulkerson, Jr. to his fans. As matter of fact, as soon as the concert poster was released, tickets were immediately sold out. Alden is also looking forward to meeting Kapuso fans abroad very soon. But in the meantime, he wishes for everyone’s safety. “I really miss performing in front of a live audience. And you know, to see our fellow Filipinos all over the world kasi before the pandemic hindi po puwede na walang isang GMA Pinoy TV show so ‘yun po talaga yung isa sa mga nami-miss ko and I can’t wait for it to be back. So ingat lang kayo diyan mga Kapuso, malapit na malapit na po tayong magkita. Salamat po for everything.” Alden’s success is a product of everyone who has helped him – his family’s love, the Kapuso Network’s trust, and his fans’ support. This is a testament that we are #StrongerTogether. Listen to Alden Richards’ full interview on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, and the GMA Pinoy TV Facebook page.

n one recent TikTok video, style icon Heart Evangelista is one show stopper, never failing to make heads turn while she walks the talk in the Paris Fashion Week 2022. Heart showed the realistic side of her photos, showing what actually goes on behind the scenes while posing for photos. She wrote a caption in the TikTok video saying "Tiis ganda" pertaining to her poise under pressure to get the perfect photos. Heart wore an all-black ensemble-black thigh-high boots and a black mini dress with puffed sleeves and a low-cut v-neck while standing near the Eiffel Tower right after sundown. The Kapuso actress went from putting her model face on to saying "Hindi ko na kaya... hindi ko na kaya" as she runs and leaves the frame, presumably to get warmer. Nonetheless, Heart looked classy and candid in her photos hiding her discomfort with a bright smile.

Manitoba Filipino Business Council Community Check-in by Danica Domingo
L
ife in Canada can be difficult is an understatement for most international students like me. Establishing a wide network and multitude of connections can be considered essential at the very least. More than anything, you want to be part of a community that genuinely cares for each other regardless of race, status, personalities, etc. With the recent community checkin spearheaded by Manitoba Filipino Business Council, the inclusivity was contagious. I have been given the privilege to join this as an incentive with my co-op opportunity alongside Filipino Journal, and the experience was beyond fulfilling. Even without a business, just being surrounded by like-minded individuals that are all for development, growth, and passion was nothing but amusing. At first, it was intimidating to join an event filled with established Filipino businessmen and professionals thriving in their own space and craft, however, the roundtable was surprisingly geared towards a ‘catchup’ and uplifting each others’ well-being. The program laid out by the organization, led by President Jackie Wild, was set up similar to an ‘icebreaker’. I felt that it was actually perfect to keep the light vibe of the event enough to magnify the spirit of togetherness despite the ongoing isolation.

When the group asked each attendee to share their answer to the question, “What keeps you up at night?”, I had to take a quick pause. This question can come off as too personal, and although the team asked for our permission prior to sharing, I felt reluctant to answer. Upon hearing everyone’s answers, I immediately felt how the council wanted to hear more of what is going on in our lives to provide comfort. To me, this question was the highlight of the entire event simply because there is no hiding anywhere with your answer. The goal is to be as genuine as possible, sharing whatever feels comfortable without feeling judged. Despite the other more difficult issues
other people may be going through with regard to what is keeping them up at night, such as where they will be sleeping tomorrow or will they have enough to feed their family, I felt ‘privileged’ to share mine. But at the end of the event, I realized how everything we are going
through should never be invalidated. As a matter of fact, it should never be taken against us and we should never be judged for it, because life is already hard as it is. The key takeaway is that there is a community out there that will accept us regardless of the differences

ALMOST 2.5 BILLION POTATOES GROWN HERE IN MANITOBA I
n 2021, 2,418,000,000 pounds* of potatoes were grown right here in Manitoba! That’s almost 20% of the nation’s potatoes are grown here in the keystone province. So, let’s do something with them. Peak of the Market is pleased to announce the fourth annual Potato Week will run for 10 days: February 4-14, 2022. A brand-new website can be found at potatoweek. com and will be updated with the restaurants that will be participating as well as their creative potato dishes. There is no fee for restaurants to participate. Peak of the Market Growers know the last few years have been beyond difficult and they want to continue to help. We’re pleased once again to be able to send each participating restaurant 100 lbs. of potatoes as a “thanks” for participating. “We’ve all seen and heard the toll the pandemic has taken on so many restaurants. Growers want to help get diners back into restaurants, so restaurants can keep doing what they love to do, feed diners!” said Pamela Kolochuk, CEO, Peak of the Market. “Manitoba potatoes are some of the best in the world! Having them turned into creative dishes for everyone to enjoy is what this week is all about. We’re excited to see Manitoba potatoes back in action.” Restaurants have got it all from melts to poutine to donuts to ice cream and even Potato Beer will be featured on local menus. You’ll find us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at peakpotatoweek. Be sure to watch for posts then like and share them!
Potato Week runs February 4-14, 2022 and celebrates Manitoba potatoes, the growers who expertly produce them and the restaurants who creatively prepare them.

How the anti-vaxxers polarized America PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
T
HE FIRST AMERICAN case OF Covid-19 was reported on January 20, 2020. Since then, 71,708,189 confirmed cases have been reported with 868,503 deaths. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that – as of May 2021 – there could be a total of 120.2 million infections in the United States. Covid-19 was the third-leading cause of death in 2020, trailing only heart disease and cancer. If that doesn’t scare the hell out of you, I don’t know what else would. This has prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to aggressively develop a vaccine to fight Covid-19. In December 2020, vaccines became available under emergency use, which started the national vaccination program. On August 23, 2021, the FDA officially approved the first vaccine. Today, the Biden administration announced that it will make 400 million highly protective N95 masks available to Americans for free. People can pick up the masks at thousands of pharmacies and community health centers. The masks will start to become available next week and the program will be fully up and running by early February. And just as the U.S. government has been doing its best to vaccinate and protect the people from exposure to the virus, a growing number of Americans have protested the vaccination programs the government implemented. Known as the antimaskers and anti-vaxxers, they have gained momentum particularly among whites. Defeat the Mandates Last January 23, a rally was organized in Washington DC that highlighted the opposition to vaccination mandates imposed by Federal, State, and local governments across the country. Known as “Defeat the Mandates: An American Homecoming,” the rally attracted several thousand protesters who weren’t wearing masks. One of the leaders of the rally was Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son and namesake of the late senator and presidential candidate who was assassinated in 1968. As one of the leaders of a movement that is encouraging Americans to risk their own health and those of others, RFK Jr. has been taken to task by several of his family members – including Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, former governor of Maryland and former Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II – for spreading “dangerous misinformation” about vaccines. Even his own wife, star
Cheryl Hines has distanced herself from RFK Jr.’s statements. It was reported in the news that on May 8, the three members of the tightly-knit Kennedy clan published an op-ed declaring that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been “tragically wrong” in his years-long crusade against vaccines. RFK Jr. has become a hero of the anti-vaxxers with his persistent claims that vaccines contain deadly ingredients, in particular, a mercury-based preservative known as thimerosal, which are linked to autism. He was wrong on both scores. Only vaccines with formulations of the flu vaccine contain thimerosal, and the type of mercury it uses is ethylmercury, which is cleared from the body quickly and harmlessly. And no vaccine causes autism. RFK Jr. should – nay, must – stop spreading false information. It’s un-American and could cause the pandemic to remain a threat to Americans’ health. A large number of anti-vaxxers insisted that their anti-mandate sentiments came out of their desire to preserve personal freedoms. Which reminds me of Patrick Henry’s speech that he delivered at the Second Virginia Convention in 1775, when he said, “Give me liberty or give me death.” In today’s parlance, that would translate to “Give me vaccine or give me death.” Do you agree? Recently, I was reading an article about unmasked mothers attacking – and screaming with rage -- those arriving at a school with masks on. And they did it in front of little children! What’s happening in this country? Why the intolerance, anger, and loss of control? Shade of Trump And something just crossed my mind. Has Trumpism anything to do with this kind of behavior? I was watching the Washington DC rally on television when a reporter was interviewing several people. I couldn’t believe the things they were saying. One said that she’d only recognize one leader and that was Donald Trump. Another one said that he believed Trump won the election – by millions of votes, but he was cheated. Another one said that he’d support an insurrection against the Democrats. Another one said that there is a civil war going on right now! Obviously, America is being polarized politically right now. There is a division among the antivax, anti-mask, and anti-mandate Americans against those who are pro-vax, pro-mask, and pro-mandate
Sa Úgoy ng Músika by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
Americans. The animosity between the two groups has separated friends and even relatives. And nothing will bring them together. As a matter of fact the division is getting worse and wider. The anti’s won’t talk to you if they find out you’re pro-vax, pro-mask or pro-mandate. During the American Civil War, there was a straight line that separated the Southern slave states from the Northern Free states, known as the Mason-Dixon Line, which was along the southern Pennsylvania border. However, it’s unlike the American Civil War where the separation was drawn along the lines that divided the pro-slavery Southern States from the anti-slavery Yankee North. Today the division is among people in every community across the U.S. It’s neighbor against neighbor. It’s ugly! What is the root of the problem? There are two groups – the vaccinated (vaxxed) and the unvaccinated (unvaxxed). To prevent spreading the Covid virus, the unvaxxed are being confined for their safety. The unvaxxed are required to be locked down at home or in some cases in “quarantine camps.” They are denied services, jobs, and entertainment – for a good reason: They didn’t want the unvaxxed to mingle with the vaxxed for fear of infecting the unvaxxed with the Covid virus. Restaurants and theaters require their customers to show their vaccination cards. You cannot ride public transportation without proof of vaccination. Deaths of the unvaxxed bring joy to the vaxxed. Nobody would attend funeral services for people who died mysteriously for fear of getting infected. Anybody who opposed treatments or vaccines were shunned and branded as heretics. You can be fired from your job, expelled from school or shamed in public if you refuse to be vaccinated. You cannot make public statements against “science” or vaccination lest you’ll be treated like a pariah, an enemy of the state.
Ultimate New Wave Evolution
(& closely related styles) part 5
Another batch of regularly played albums in my collection, these records are by some of the lesserknown bands in the genre. Usually, the popularity of the band or the song adds up to the excitement in hearing the music. However, in some cases, the obscurity could also make the listening experience far more interesting and thrilling. It may be compared with tasting a certain kind of delicious delicacy that is not always readily available. It can make the listener want some more.
Government compliance The government wants compliance, hence the mandates. They force businesses to impose compliance. And the fear-mongers would remind you that the government is using science to shackle people to comply with mandates and executive orders that they deemed tyrannical and dictatorial. Are we governed by Hitlers and Mussolini's bandying as the Pied Piper who enticed people to follow him through outrageous promises and personal charisma? Now, you can see how Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could easily enthrall the American people into believing the “dangerous misinformation” he is spreading about vaccines. At the end of the day, the attempt of RFK Jr. to mislead the American people would fail because nothing good would ever come out of an evil design.
