he month of January has brought Winnipeg quite a number of snow days. Though most days have recorded extremely low temperatures, few days just worked on our favor. January 16 was one of the better days, giving Winnipeg a beautiful -5◦ during the day. young, making it difficult for you to leave the house to go to work. Or you might think that your father was too strict with rules and got into arguments about this with him. This is fine, but you need to consider whether holding on to these feelings will help or hurt you as a parent (if at all). This can be hard because it means confronting things that we might not want to think about, but it is essential to understand better and help our children.

Top Five Good Parenting Tips

P

arents play a huge role in the lives of their children. Parents must teach and influence their children in the best possible way. Consequently, it is necessary to consider all aspects of parenting, from daily life issues such as getting your child to eat healthy, do well at school and make friends. In addition, consider more general problems such as preventing your child from developing mental health problems or risky behavior in later life. Here are five key tips to help you become a great parent. 1.Being a good role model It has been shown that children

will copy their parents' behavior, even when they have been asked not to. This can be seen in different situations, such as at mealtimes or watching television, but it is essential to remember that it works both ways. Thus, be careful of how you live as your child will copy you.

with time and experience. This is because children are more likely to obey their parents when they feel loved by them. It is also essential to be firm with your child, which means listening carefully to their feelings while still making the rules very clear.

2. Practice kind and firm positive parenting Be kind to your child, even when it is difficult. If they are tired or cranky, try to understand what is making them like this and show compassion instead of overreacting angrily. This may be hard as you might not know how to act in these situations, but it will become easier

3. Talk with your child and help their brains integrate It is essential to maintain open communication with your child. Regularly sit down together and talk about what they are doing at school, how they feel, their hopes for the future, etc. Get close with your child and help their brain integrate by

explaining things to them in different ways than you usually would. For example, when you know they are having a hard time at school, tell them what is happening in your day, but with the roles reversed. This will provide an opportunity for your child to let off some steam about the things that are bothering them while gaining some perspective on their situation. 4. Reflect on your childhood It is crucial that parents think about their own childhood experiences when parenting, even if it was a long time ago. For example, you might feel guilty or angry that your mother left home when you were

5. Love your kids and show them love The most important thing is to love your children unconditionally and show them this through affection and other means. Even if they do not always obey you, telling them that you love them will help them trust in the relationship with their parents and feel safe. This unconditional love will also help them become more independent and feel good about themselves, so they can go out into the world and be confident. Following these five points will help guide parents towards developing strong, healthy relationships with their children. This is important because it has been shown that when there is a good relationship between parents and their children, their children will have a good everyday life. I’d love to hear your feedback and stories about parenting. Comments, suggestions and personal experiences are welcome. Email info@FilipinoJournal.com, Subject “Filipino Parenting Tips”

The Winnipeg Foundation announces 2021 distributions totaled a record-breaking $84.9 million to approximately 1,100 charities

Canadian Labour Organization donates to victims of Typhoon Rai

This responsive and reliable community support is possible because of generous donors Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2021. For immediate release – In a year when we have all been deeply affected by the pandemic, The Winnipeg Foundation is grateful to have been able to support the community with $84.9 million distributed to approximately 1,100 charities working in all Cause areas in our community. This is the most distributed, to the greatest number of charities, in The Foundation’s 100-year history. The Foundation’s work is only possible because of generous donors. Despite living through the uncertainty of COVID-19, last year Manitobans yet again demonstrated why we are known as the most generous province. In 2021, The Foundation received a record 9,613 contributions totaling $189.8 million. “The pandemic has impacted every aspect of our lives and the repercussions will be long lasting. However, we are never helpless. We can always rise to the challenges in our community,” says Sky Bridges, CEO of The Winnipeg Foundation. Charities deliver valuable programming that builds community and supports us all. The financial impacts of the pandemic have been especially challenging for charities, and so The Foundation is incredibly proud to have been able to deliver responsive and reliable support to our charitable sector. Between March 2020 and Sept. 30, 2021, The Foundation issued 749 COVID-related grants totaling $21,065,620. During the pandemic, The Foundation’s grantmaking adapted as circumstances evolved. It continued and heightened its practices of trustbased philanthropy, which includes engaging and listening to community organizations to understand their needs, being flexible with funding and reporting, and providing proactive and/or unrestricted funding. The Foundation also applied an equity lens to its work; acknowledging there are systemic barriers faced

by Indigenous communities, Black communities, People of Colour, the 2SLGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities. “The Foundation is a testimony to what we can achieve when we work together,” says Doneta Brotchie, outgoing board chair of The Winnipeg Foundation. “2021 marked The Winnipeg Foundation’s 100th birthday, and we are proud to be the first community foundation in Canada. We celebrated our centennial with a variety of collaborations and activities.” Head to wpgfdn.org/ celebrating-our-centennial for more. While the ethos of service leadership is ingrained in The Winnipeg Foundation’s approach to supporting community, it is being reflected on with new vigour as it enters its second century. “The Foundation is working with stakeholders and the community to ensure we are helping to create a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” says Tom Bryk, incoming board chair of The Winnipeg Foundation. “We acknowledge this work requires an understanding of both power structures and of how institutions may inadvertently perpetuate inequities. We are committed to asking, listening and learning from our community as we build our best path forward. We also understand this requires reflection on both the individual and institutional level.” Gifts to The Foundation are pooled and invested in endowment funds, and a portion of the interest is granted back to the community each year. It is this endowment that allows The Foundation to provide responsive and reliable community support. The Foundation’s endowment, which is made up of thousands of individual funds, totaled $1.748 billion at fiscal year-end 2021 To view The Foundation’s audited financial statements, and read its 2021 Annual Highlights document, head to wpgfdn.org/ publications

The Pied Piper of Mar-a-Lago PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com IN 1284, AS THE LEGEND GOES, the people of Hamelin, Germany, hired the town’s rat-catcher, a piper, to lure the rats away with his magic pipe. The piper was dressed in multi-colored (“pied”)

clothing; hence he was called the “Pied Piper.” He led the rats out of the town and into the sea where they drowned. When the town’s people refused to pay him for his services, he retaliated by using his

magic pipe and led their children away as he had with the rats. Today, the term “Pied Piper” describes a person who talks often convincingly but who leads people into disaster. It is also used to identify a leader whom people willingly follow as he leads them into danger or trouble by means of lies and false promises. During the 2016 presidential elections in the U.S., Democratic Party officials labeled the Republican Party’s candidate Donald Trump a “Pied Piper candidate.” Using his strong appeal to white nationalists

and right-wing conservatives, Trump got the nomination of the Republican Party by eliminating his 16 rivals, one by one, in the primaries. During the general election, Trump used demagoguery to deliver a populist message such as “America First” and “Make America great again!” He also manifested antiwomen, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim behavior. But to his die-hard supporters, his coded messages stirred their own prejudices. Well, the “Pied Piper candidate” won the 2016 presidential elections. But it was downhill from that time onward. He was twice impeached by the House of Representatives but was acquitted by the Senate, which requires a two-thirds majority of the senators present at the trial to convict the president. In the 2020 presidential elections, Trump lost to Joe Biden by more than eight million votes. But Trump never conceded defeat. He propagated the “Big Lie” that the election was stolen from him. But it was never proven. Lawsuits filed by Trump’s supporters lost in more than 60 cases including two cases thrown out by the Supreme Court. And then on January 6, 2021, Trump incited his supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol. All hell broke loose! The insurrection caused damage to the Capitol Building and the deaths of at least five persons including one Capitol police officer. A year later, on January 6, 2022, the January 6th Subcommittee that is investigating the insurrection, revealed that testimonies from witnesses indicate the extent of the conspiracy to topple the U.S. government by forcing the Senate to overturn the Electoral Count, which gave Biden 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232 electoral votes. Had Vice President Mike Pence ruled to overturn the results in favor of Trump, he would still be sitting in the Oval Office today. Pence should be congratulated for resisting pressures from Trump and other Republicans to overturn the results of the election. Clearly, it was an attempt to execute a coup to install Trump as the election winner. Ultimately, Trump left the White House, defeated but not out of the game. He vowed to make a comeback in 2024. He opened an office in Palm Spring, Florida and put a big sign that says “Office of Former President Donald J. Trump.” He went to work right away, calling his allies and die-hard supporters, encouraging them to

FilipinoJournal.com

continue the fight to save America. He opened a fund-raising account called “Save America PAC” and started sending out letters to millions of his supporters asking them for donations to his campaign to retake the White House. And his base responded enthusiastically. He raised $75 million in the first six months of the campaign. But Trump’s re-election requires maximizing – and expanding – the support of his “base,” which is the white voters without college degrees, in the key battleground states where he won in 2016. However, Trump is losing support among other voters – suburban white women, college-educated whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians, and other minority groups. As a result, Trump’s narrow path to victory would require high voter turnout by the so-called “workingclass whites” in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan. And based on recent polls, his base is shrinking. The question is: What would his base look like in 2024? If the trend of his shrinking base continues, he’d be left with an unsubstantial number of die-hard supporters by the next presidential election, not enough to win the election. But Trump’s magical power to attract millions of MAGA diehards has kept political pundits wondering: What does it take to break his spell over his supporters? A few weeks ago, when Trump was interviewed on Bill O’Reilly’s “History Tour” on television, Trump announced he was vaccinated and received a booster shot. Instantly, his supporters booed him. The outcry was unbelievable. However, it was his undoing. Ever since the beginning of the pandemic, Trump was known to be against vaccination, which has conditioned the minds of his supporters to refuse to get vaccinated, believing that it is harmful to the body. Hence, many of his supporters began campaigning against vaccinations. Known as the “anti-vaxxers,” they resisted vaccination. So when Trump announced that he’s been vaccinated and boosted as well, they rose in protest. And if Trump began losing the support of his anti-vaxxer base, it would create a backlash against him come 2024. So now, Trump would have to change his magic tune in order to keep his followers stay with him. Has the Pied Piper of Mar-a-Lago lost his touch with his MAGA followers?

FILIPINO CHEFS SHOWCASE A UNIQUE SPIN ON FRIED CHICKEN DISHES

W

ith the record number of participating restaurants in the 5th Winnipeg Fried Chicken Fest this year , more Filipino chefs have also brought their culinary expertise to the first festival of the year-some new, some returning. Chef Mark Merano of James Ave Pumphouse Food and Drink is one of the new ones. His creation, Orange Chicken French Toast, is buttermilk fried chicken with a spiced orange syrup

, condensed milk French toast , and garnished with orange segments, feta, pickled onions, mint and chili flakes. “It’s like painting a picture , my inspiration was fried chicken and French toast. And you just put it together and see what made sense. I love Chinese food so I thought of lemon chicken, then changed it up a bit, thus, the orange chicken,” said Chef Mark when asked about the recipe inspiration. Chef Mark said that it took a BLOCK AND BLADE 1100-50 Sage Creek Boulevard The Ultimate Mother Clucker Presented by Chef Noel Soriano Six deep fried chicken balls stuffed three ways: Apple and Brie, Broccoli and Cheddar, and Pesto Parmesan topped with a cream sauce, maple-flavoured aioli and green onions, served in a waffle cone bowl.

couple of days of trial and error before he came up with the final showpiece. “I think it is a matter of looking what is available in your arsenal as a chef. You scrap what doesn’t work and keep what works,” added Chef Mark. Since the festival started, Chef Mark shared that the restaurant has been getting good feedback about their fried chicken dish entry. “People say it’s a very brunchy item, it’s unique.” Chef Mark, working in a unique restaurant, it being built in a historical building which was Winnipeg's first high-pressure water system, not only boasts of their amazing location but also a menu that draws on Manitoba culinary traditions. Two of their bestsellers are the Dan Dan Thai and Braised Beef Tacos which definitely are must try recipes.

wonderful culinary experience is when you are fully satisfied, more than your money's worth when you dine at KumPares Grill House, a new destination of the Filipino for grilled cuisine, boodle food fight and mouthwatering menus. And this is what the Andres family has been doing since they opened in August 2021, at the height of the pandemic with surging COVID-19 cases. "It was difficult for us, especially for my four sons who have been toying with the idea of having a restaurant of their own at this time of the pandemic. But the family stood together hand in hand, heart to heart to open KumPares Grill House to offer something more

unique and distinct to our clients in Winnipeg, " Alice Andres, the mother , and a prep employee, said during our interview. Although the Andres Family, immigrated to Winnipeg in 2007, had no restaurant connection in their hometown, Taytay, Rizal, their four sons, Adrian, Alvin, Mark and Arnel are certified foodies, giving themselves the challenges to savour variety of foods. Arnel later moved to Vancouver. "Mark developed the concept of the restaurant and Arnel was also very passionate to own a restaurant which can offer a unique culinary experience, something that the Filipinos in Winnipeg had not been into," added Alice with a smile. The family looked for space and when they found a former restaurant space on Sherbrook, close to Logan, her sons started planning the KumPares Grill House, giving more attention on the kind of food they wanted to serve. KumPares as the name of their restaurant evokes warmer and closer friendship. "One of the most awaited foods we now offer is "cochinillo" (lechon), a real suckling pig aged 2 to 3-month old," Mark said with great expectations. Last Christmas,

there were 45 cochinillo sold. The demand skyrocketed." With the added experience of Adrian, Alvin and Mark, like Mark and Alvin who worked with Mangkok International Cuisine, the brothers took advantage of their experiences that inspired them to own their own restaurant. "Even, my former boss, the late Rod Layco, owner and chef of Mangkok Restaurant, encouraged me to put up my own restaurant," Mark said. At first, they were renting a licensed facility to serve the growing clients and when they realized that it was time to open the family restaurant, the four brothers, their parents, Rudy and Alice Andres, together with the spouses, Mila, Jonah, and Marie, of the three chefs. KumPares, a strong brand for Filipino identity, came into reality in spite of the on-going restriction due to the COVID-19 cases. "I am happy for the warm reception rendered by our Filipino customers and it seems that they are our extended family members, " Alice Creditaid said with the voice of hope and courage.

Janella Salvador undergoes Netizens react to Heart Evangelista 's liposuction; admits interesting IG post it helped her bag the Valentina role

Highly noticeable in social media right now is the liposuction procedure of Kapamilya star Janella de Leon which apparently helped her bag the role of Valentina in the series Darna. In her Instagram account, Dr Vick Belo posted the procedure that Janella underwent. The Kapamilya star came to Belo six months after she gave birth to son Jude, to prepare her figure for work. "We did 360-degree liposuction on her arms, wings, back, and

abdomen," Vicki narrated in the video. "Three months after the lipo, we used the Skin Genius to tighten and shrink the loose skin on her back and arms," she added. Vicki shared that Janella is happy with the outcome and always texts to thank her. “'Yun naman ang hinahanap ko kasi. I mean, of course, I don’t deny that money is good, but the client's satisfaction is what makes my heart sing,” Dr Vicki Belo said.

In her recent OOTD post on Instagram, Heart Evangelista captioned it "interesting" as it involved her husband, Sorsogon Governor Chiz Escudero, barging into her video. On her January 17 post, Heart posted a series of IG Reels, showing her outfit of the day. Likely unbeknown to Chiz that he was being captured in the video, he entered the room and asked Heart if the light (in the room) has been fixed. As he was walking out, Chiz

noticed the open cabinet of Heart's designer bags. "Dumami na naman yang bag mo?, Chiz asked Heart. In her defense, Heart replies: "Hindi ah! Nilagay ko kasi yung Chanel dito, pinalitan ko lang [yung placement].." Chiz reminded Heart as he walked out : "Darling, tigil-tigilan na 'yan. Aalis ka. Bawas-bawasan. Makakabili ka lang kung magbenta ka." Heart then replied with assurance

that she is planning to sell some pieces from her collection and said, "I'm gonna sell. I'll get rid of the normies and I'll upgrade to croc or ostrich..." The post got different reactions from celebrities and netizens, mostly finding the couple cute . The power couple has always been open about their financial set up and in a vlog, Chiz admitted that he is giving his wife tough love when it comes to teaching her about financial responsibility.

was 10 years old, in the summer of 1981, when I first heard of the music genre called New Wave. I was at home during lunch time when I thought of turning on the radio, which played a succession of songs that caught my fancy. Since that day, I began to tune in

to that radio station to hear more of whatever that kind of music was. I finally found out afterwards that the radio station was DZRJ 810 AM, the DJ was Howlin' Dave (the late Dante David, who introduced Punk & New Wave to the Filipino audience as early as that year), and
