KULTIVATION FAMD: HALO-HALO SUMMIT 2021 The Halo-Halo Summit is a virtual celebration of Philippine Independence Day and Filipino Heritage Month which took place on Saturday, June 12th. "The sooner we get vaccinated, the sooner we can get back together as a community." - Ron Cantiveros on being a COVID Vaccine Ambassador

I

n the Filipino community, we often have multi-generational families in one household. We also have a large community of over 85,000 Filipinos in Manitoba – many of whom are essential workers in healthcare, retail, manufacturing and food service industries. Because of this, I wasn’t surprised when I learned that the rates of transmission within the Filipino community have been relatively high. The opening of Winnipeg’s second vaccine Super-Site on Leila will have a huge impact on vaccine accessibility in our community. My family followed all the fundamentals to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but you can take all the precautions and still get it. I know because I tested positive for COVID-19 in November. It happened at the same time that our family was about to welcome our second child into the world! I was devastated, because being in quarantine meant I couldn’t be there for his birth, I couldn’t be there to support my wife during the delivery! It wasn’t until after my two weeks in quarantine that I could finally hold baby Luc in my arms! Thankfully, my COVID-19 infection was mild, and I had a great support network of family, friends, and co-workers. And I’m so grateful I didn’t pass the virus to my wife, kids, father and in-laws. As the COVID-19 vaccine program rolled-out, I was excited to see our parents and my friends’ parents get vaccinated. It was great to see our lolas (grandmothers), lolos (grandfathers), titas (aunts) and titos (uncles)

also getting vaccinated. For me, their first vaccine shots meant we were taking one step closer to normalcy, and the hope that we will soon get together as a community again. I’m so glad to hear that we’re now seeing fewer cases in this older age group – it gives me comfort, even though we’re still in a pandemic. After all we’ve been through as a community I want to give a big shout out to science! I have a B.Sc. Genetics Honours degree, I have always valued modern medical advances, including now, the development of COVID-19 vaccines. If you’re hesitant about getting the COVID-19 vaccine, talk to a healthcare professional or a trusted friend. You can even ask me questions on Twitter. With vaccines, I feel like it’s the gateway on the road back to a normal life. I look at recent public events happening in the U.S. – Stanley Cup Playoffs, PGA Championships, concerts and events… and I want that back! As the Winnipeg Jets move to Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs, as a fan and sports photographer for the Filipino Journal, I miss being at the rink, I miss the crowds, and our Whiteout parties. The sooner we get vaccinated, the sooner we can get back together as a community. I miss going to BBQs in the park, wedding socials, weddings, christenings and Filipino festivals. I’m hopeful though, that we’ll get there soon enough and my sons – Lorenzo and Luc – will feel the love and joy of playing with their cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

COVID-19 Vaccine Town Hall with Doctors Physicians will respond to vaccine questions from local residents

A

series of four vaccine town halls have been planned by Doctors Manitoba for the week of June 21. The sessions will allow Manitobans to ask questions and raise concerns about the COVID-19 vaccines and get answers directly from physicians. "As doctors, we care about the health of Manitobans and we want to share what we know about the COVID-19 vaccines," said Dr. Kristjan Thompson, President of Doctors Manitoba. "Manitobans can always get advice from their physician, and now our town halls will offer another option to get the answers you need about the vaccines." Manitobans can send in questions in advance at ManitobaVaccine.ca or submit them live during town halls, which will be broadcast on YouTube. Each town hall will feature a panel of doctors, with over fifteen physicians and medical experts participating in the four town halls.

The following town halls are planned next week: ▪ Town Hall for All - Wednesday, June 23 at 6:30 pm ▪ Town Hall for Youth and Parents - Tuesday, June 22 at 6:30 pm ▪ Town Hall for Morden/Winkler and Southern Manitoba - Monday, June 21 at 6:30 pm ▪ Town Hall for Steinbach and Southeastern Manitoba - Thursday, June 24 at 6:30 pm Dr. Thompson noted there is a lot of information circulating about the vaccines right now, some accurate and some misleading. "These are new vaccines for a new disease. It's natural to have questions, and doctors want to share the facts so you can make an informed decision about getting immunized." Manitobans can access answers to common vaccine questions anytime at ManitobaVaccine. ca, a site created by s physicians for Manitobans about COVID-19 vaccines.

PHCM bounces back with Virtual Gala to Celebrate 123rd Philippine Independence

T

he Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM) bounced back this year with a virtual gala celebrating the 123rd anniversary of Philippine independence. In pre-COVID times, the celebration was typically held at the Marlborough Hotel in downtown Winnipeg as a formal dinner replete with greetings from dignitaries, cultural performances and ballroom dancing to cap the evening. However, with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, it was cancelled like most other events due to gathering restrictions. Because the online celebration was live-streamed for free on the website and Facebook page of PHCM and that of event partner Barangay Canada, it amassed over a thousand views as of press time. The occasion was made even more special because this year the Philippines is also marking its Quincentennial Commemorations, or the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the Magellan-Elcano expedition and the Victory at Mactan. The evening kicked off with Yasmin Reyes singing the national anthems of Canada and the Philippines. This was followed by the opening remarks and land acknowledgment by PHCM President Perla Javate. A series of recorded greetings came next, starting off with the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. Others who brought greetings were the Hon. Erin O’Toole of the federal Conservatives, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister, Winnipeg North MP Kevin Lamoureux, and Waverley MLA Jon Reyes. Selected members of the Manitoba NDP Caucus also brought greetings. Among the delegation were Notre Dame’s Malaya Marcelino, Burrows’ Diljeet Brar, The Maples’ Mintu Sandhu and NDP leader Wab Kinew. Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman

also provided a video greeting. Rounding out the well-wishers were Philippine Ambassador to Ottawa Rodolfo Robles, Winnipeg Honorary Consul Ronald Opina, and one from the Winnipeg Police Service as prepared by Officers Orlando and Maria Buduhan. Because this year’s theme was ‘Celebrating Our Heroes OF Yesterday and Today,’ the main program was split into two segments. The first was a tribute to the Filipino Heroes of Yesterday – those from the Philippine Revolution – as presented by Pastor Victor Cuarto, a former history instructor at the De La Sallle University in Manila. The second segment focused on the Heroes of Today, particularly the medical frontliners and essential service workers who kept the community and country going as we struggled to control the dreaded coronavirus. Digital certificates of appreciation were presented to representatives of a total of fifteen occupational sectors such as nurses, transportation workers, and health care aides, among many others. No celebration would be complete without performances. The Malolos siblings Johan and Nathan showed off their HipHop and Jazz dancing prowess, while The Highlights Performing Group of Joy Lazo sang ‘Love In Any Language’ and ‘Seasons of Love’. The cast of MA-BUHAY! The Musical graced the occasion with two performances -- ’Singin It, Bringing’ It’ and ‘Being Free‘-- both numbers featuring Andrea Macasaet, star of the hit Broadway production, SIX The Musical. Overall, it was a major accomplishment to have staged a major cultural celebration amid the pandemic by switching to an online platform. This columnist considers it a tremendous honour

to have helped make the festivities possible as PHCM’s Vice President for Program and Media and as cofounder of the Barangay Canada media initiative. To the other officers of the PHCM, fellow advocates in the Winnipeg Filipino community, and to all kababayans in the country and

Keep That Remote Control Busy (A Couple of Recommended Netflix Series)

Sa Báwat Páhinâ ng Pánitikan by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

W

e're already past one full year of the pandemic, but the world is yet to achieve a considerable space of normalcy. Public places for fun are still either close or partially restricted--restaurants, parks, malls, and theaters. This continues

to make people homebound most of the times. And when one has more hours to spare at home, one can beat boredom or restlessness leisurely by reading a book, listening to records, or watching movies. Speaking of watching, here are

a few Netflix series that are worth checking out. 'Sweet Tooth' (2021) Premiered on Netflix on June 4, 2021, the post-apocalypticthemed 'Sweet Tooth' follows the story of the 10-year-old half human, half deer hybrid boy Gus (Christian Convery). Drama, suspense, and adventure are all-in-one in this adorable series. Season 1 consists of eight engaging episodes. In spite of the show's overwhelming positive reception, there's no news yet of the followup. Let's hope that Season 2 gets to be made soon.

'Manifest' (2018) Premiered on September 24, 2018, 'Manifest' is about a commercial plane that encountered an unexpected turbulence while on flight. Fortunately, the pilot pulled through the harrowing experience; the plane and all its passengers and crew landed unscathed. However, there's one problem--how could they return to their respective lives? For, due to an unexplained mystery, they apparently disappeared--long presumed dead by their loved ones. The storm took them to five and a half years forward into reality. How will they face their new realities? It's then time to begin the series, which consists of 40 episodes.

Game On - Bombers Set To Defend Grey Cup

T

he Canadian Football League unveiled a 14-game schedule for the 2021 season. The regular season opens Thursday, August 5th with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers playing host to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at IG Field in a 2019 Grey Cup rematch. The Blue Bombers vs Ticats showdown will mark the first CFL action to take place since the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary on November 24, 2019. The revised 14-game 2021 Blue Bombers schedule features seven road and seven home contests. Of the seven dates at IG Field, three will be held on Saturdays, two will be Friday night games with one each on Sunday and Thursday. The schedule includes the traditional Labour Day Classic and Banjo Bowl games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on successive weekends in September, with the Blue Bombers visiting Regina on Sunday, September 5th and the Riders in Winnipeg on Saturday, September 11th. The Bombers open the season with consecutive home dates – the opener on August 5th and a visit by the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, August 13th – and then wrap up with back-toback games on the road, November 13th in Montreal against the Alouettes and November 20th in Calgary versus the Stampeders.

AUSTIN RYAN GRANADOS:

An inamorato in the pulsating pastry paradise

D

efinitely, the Winnipeggers are the greatest benefactors when Austin Ryan Granados, a Gold Medalist in Skills Canada National Competition, returned to his beloved city and took over the management of CAKE-OLOGY at 85 Arthur Street, located in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. And take note that when Austin Ryan won a gold medal at the prestigious Skills Canada National Competition, his journey to the world of pasty had begun, along the way to physically experience the changing landscape in the world of pastry. After winning the gold medal in 2015, he moved to Toronto to work under Chef Bertie Tanaya at Rosedale Private Golf Club as a pastry cook. And fully inspired by the World Best Pastry Chef in 2017, he moved to New York to work with Dominique Ansel at his bakery in Soho, the home of the worldwide popular "Cronut", a donut-croissant hybrid. After a year, Austin went back to Toronto to work at Hotel X in 2018, as Pastry Chef De Partie. Then, to grow more, he ventured out to Hong Kong in 2019, working at One Michelin Star, VEA, named the 12th best restaurant in Asia of 2019 for one year. The culmination of this journey for international

pastry knowledge, he moved to Europe in 2020, interning for 3 months at Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark. A Two Michelin Star Restaurant and ranked #1 World’s Best Restaurant in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and in 2014 by the San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best. “Truly a dream come true for any chef to work with the best chefs at Noma," Austin said. And the newest journey of Austin Ryan is his hometown, Winnipeg, when he opened CAKE-OLOGY on May 1st. 2021, with business partners, Bien and Colin. Privileged we are to have Austin Ryan faithfully deciding to return to his hometown and to share his international talents with the Winnipeggers. "I've travelled the world in search of inspiration through the wonderful world of food. What excites me is not knowing what I already know. Bringing new flavours and ideas to people, as well as being back in Winnipeg is rewarding on its own. This bakery means absolutely everything to me," he said with a firm hold of his realized dream. Austin Ryan Granados is a real inamorato, baking comes dearly from his heart. Austin is the youngest son of Richard and Zeny Granados of Winnipeg, and one of the grandchildren of Tatay Claudio, who, lately, on June 6th, had celebrated his 100th year and of course, Austin baked a special cake to grace the centennial celebration of his grandpa.

A real proud Winnipegger! NOTE: Inamorato is a person who is passionate in his work, working from the heart in the pulsating world of pastry. And with Austin's tremendous journey to gain so much on pastry know-how, people who love pastries will start swooning at him, and Austin is so young, passionate, and good looking (Mana sa Mommy at Daddy) What else can we expect from him. He is a star in the pastry universe.

IATF advises to find compromise for OFWs coming back home

AstraZeneca shots coming in July for private sector workers

O

AFP/Ted Aljibe

Senators have advised the Inter-Agency Task Force to find middle ground that will enable OFWS to come home despite the ongoing pandemic. As per Sen. Panfilo Lacson, even “little adjustments” made by the coronavirus task force can already make a big difference to our modernday heroes who just long to go home to their families. Such statement comes after Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia issued executive orders allowing OFWS to be swabbed upon arrival and allowed to go home if test results turn out negative. The reason behind Garcia’s move is also because Cebu is experiencing shortage of rooms and quarantine facilities. It can be noted though that these returning OFWs are required to have a second swab test on the seventh day from when they arrived. Stating that the country cannot be too stiff and stringent, Lacson is pushing for a middle ground because there are certain situations which call for flexibility. Lacson cited the case of a returning office employee who was instructed to spend six nights at a hotel, along with other balikbayans, at the cost of P10,000 per night. He pointed out that this person has to spend a small fortune when he could be safer by undergoing isolation at home. He went on to explain the adaptability displayed by the Cebu provincial government by carrying out its own policies, with the conclusion that such rules have saved balikbayans from inconvenience and monetary burden.

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim

Inject It Not Once but Twice (The Virus and the Vaccine) "This isn't a pandemic of just a virus. This is a pandemic of emotion...a pandemic of pain and suffering that has to do with lost jobs and lost persons. This is not just a public health journey. This is really a personal journey for all of us."--Star Tribune, March 23, 2021 Vaccines reduce risks of getting a disease by working with the body’s natural defences, building protection. When a person gets vaccinated, his immune system responds. There had been a global clamor for vaccines against COVID-19 in the latter part of 2020 as stronger strains continued to be discovered. The working citizens are eager to go back to a state of normalcy in terms of finances, looking forward to the moment when most of the population have been vaccinated, so they can easily resume their jobs. COVID-19 appears to have brought about untenable new strains that are still being observed and identified. They are labeled with the name of the country where it was discovered. For instance, a recent variant was that of India which came out in December 2020. According to the news, it spreads quickly, and scientists are worried that it might also

be the type that could enter human cells. Having said this, the ultimate approach is indeed vaccines. Below are the recently available vaccines. 1. Pfizer/BioNtech (Pfizer) 2. SII/CoviShield and AstraZeneca/ AZD1222 (AstraZeneca/Oxford) 3. Janssen/Ad26 Cov 2.S (Johnson & Johnson) 4. Moderna COVID 19 Vaccine/mRNA 1273 (Moderna) 5. Sinopharm COVID 19 Vaccine (Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd) 6. Sinovac-Coronavac (Sinovac) In spite of the number of leading

pharmaceuticals that developed the COVID Vaccine (CoVax), more cases are still surfacing. Whom were known to be immune to the COVID virus at the start--children of 12 years old and above--have already been added to the list of those eligible for vaccination. The demand for the virus seems to have become higher as the scope of the vaccine grows wider. The scare due to the variants' mutation, transmission rate, and characteristic to even reject the vaccine are not being discounted and are within a heightened consideration. Clearly, the so-called CoVax has become available, courtesy of several phatmaceutical companies, but why is its global distribution seems taking a lifetime? The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, via their Archwell Online Channel, recently put forward their campaign for global vaccine equality: "Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World," to call on world leaders to make COVID-19 vaccines available for everyone. They have garnered $53.8M in commitments, even before the show aired on May 8, 2021. As of this writing, the amount of CoVax pledges has reached 10 million doses. Most people around the world perhaps wanted to go back to normalcy. Many are eager to get re-employed, to be able to receive again the salary that they lost. Those who have grown accustomed to conducting businesses online can continue to do so for as long as it is beneficial and rewarding for them. Fact of the matter, we don't need celebrities to do campaigns for everyone's sake around the world. Each country has its own government that should be committed and dedicated to the welfare

of the people whom they have sworn to protect and care for. And about those pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the vaccines, what are they waiting for? Or is it the governments that needed a wakeup call, for them to act up efficiently and effectively? At this point in time, both governments and COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers should go hand-in-hand and act fast. I believe, while it is aptly needed, revenue should not be the driving force but the conscientious effort to help the citizenry. Everyone, especially those who have more capacity than others, is encouraged to look beyond where they

are for global vaccine equity and to help combat this virus in a shorter period of time. What the world needs now are more people with heightened sense of kindness, altruism, and compassion; the noble acts of whom will surely go down in the history of humankind. *Currently working at the Philippine International Convention Center, where she began services 22 years ago, Kathryn Valladolid Ebrahim is an alumna of St. Scholastica's College–Manila; she finished a degree in Bachelor of Arts, major in Sociology, at the University of Santó Tomás; drawing and writing are her primary avocations.

(On '60s Sunshine Pop)

ike any other decade that followed it, the 1960s was an exciting time for catchy, melodic, often-orchestrated, and generally positively worded Pop songs that are also steeped with rich and playful vocal harmonies. Described now as Sunshine/Psychedelic Pop, the mid- to late-'60s works of The Beatles ("Here Comes the Sun"), The Beach Boys ("Here Comes the Night"), The Monkees ("Daydream Believer"), and The Zombies ("Time of the Season") were just tips of the genre's iceberg. Here is a list of more songs that made the '60s sunny and shiny. Take time to check them out on YouTube. You may even buy CDs of the albums containing these tracks online, if you're really interested. For sure, you might have already heard some of them. If in case not yet, then they will surely be a sweet delight to your ears, especially in the currently warm, bright, and breezy season.
