SNOW PATROL

Edison Garcia is the founder of Bayanihan sa Winnipeg, a group that does a lot of volunteer work for the community. They boost busted car batteries, drive for seniors, deliver food donations, usher in community events, patrol for neighborhood watch and the list goes on. Every winter, they help seniors clear their areas from snow. And when they do, their only weapon is…their own personal shovel. But not until a couple of weeks ago when their volunteer work will now be efficient and attainable. No more need for the shovel because Bayanihan sa Winnipeg was chosen to be one of the recipients of a snow thrower through the generosity of Greenworks Canada and Cynthia Reyes.

Putin resorts to nuclear blackmail PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com IN APRIL 2013, I wrote a column titled “Nuclear Blackmail,” where I talked about North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un’s saber rattling, threatening to send nuclear ballistic missiles to the United States and Guam. Although nothing came out of Kim’s threat to send nuclear missiles to

the U.S., it brought to the forefront of geopolitics the notion that a nuclear power no matter how small, poses the danger of nuclear holocaust by threatening to use nuclear missiles against another nuclear power. And once North Korea uses her nuclear weapons, the U.S. will respond by unleashing a torrent of nuclear missiles against North Korea. Conceivably, this could lead to World War III and could, ultimately, end in a Mutually Assured Destruction or MAD, as is commonly used to depict what would result in such an exchange of nuclear missiles.

Putin’s nuclear threat Nine years later, the same situation happened but on a bigger scale as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons if the U.S. and her allies would invade Ukraine has caused concern in Washington DC. Indeed, with the U.S. arsenal of 5,500 nuclear warheads and Russia’s 6,000, it clearly raises the specter of a nuclear war that would destroy the entire civilization, which raises the question: What kind of a man is he who threatens to destroy mankind? Does the war in Ukraine warrant MAD? Only a mad man could think of such destruction, which makes one wonder: Is Putin crazy to risk nuclear war over some civil disturbances in Ukraine? I don’t think Putin is crazy. His problem goes far beyond the current situation in Ukraine. One has to go back to December 25, 1991 when the Soviet Empire disintegrated. Vladimir Putin, then a KGB spy, was out of a job. He ended working as a taxi driver to survive. But he lucked out when he found himself working for thenPresident Boris Yeltsen. One thing led to another. Pretty soon Yeltsin appointed him Prime Minister. But Yeltsin was very sick, which forced him to resign. He appointed Putin – a virtual unknown – as Acting President. Three months later, Putin was elected President of Russia. He’s been in power ever since. Geopolitical catastrophe In 2005, Putin told the Russian nation: “The demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.” He lamented, saying, “It became a genuine tragedy for the Russian people. Tens of millions of our fellow citizens and countrymen found themselves beyond the fringes of Russian territory.” Since then, he became obsessed with reviving the Soviet Empire when Russia ruled over Eastern Europe, from the three Baltic States down to Poland, Romania, and nine other former Soviet satellite countries. By 1997, all of them had joined NATO, except Ukraine who chose to remain neutral. It was a tragic mistake because Ukraine did not avail of the protection of NATO, whose Article 5 states that “an attack on one member will be an attack on all members.” Putin, who cannot touch any NATO country, took aim at Ukraine. Putin encouraged two separatist regions of Ukraine – Donetsk and Luhansk – to declare independence from Ukraine, which Putin readily recognized as independent countries and declared them as allies. Once again, Putin’s evil genius was at play. But Biden made a strategic blunder when he vowed never to invade or enter Ukraine. It emboldened Putin, which gave him the wrong message; which in effect was like saying, “Go ahead and invade Ukraine, I’ll stay out of it.” Biden’s reason was that once the U.S. forces entered Ukraine, it would trigger World War III. Bayanihan sa Winnipeg

A

fter the viral tweet about Cynthia Reyes shovelling, a commercial equipment company called Greenworks Canada reached out to Cynthia and wanted to give her, not one, but three 80V 22 snow throwers. Without hesitation, Cynthia felt inclined to give them away to anybody who would benefit from them. Cynthia Reyes gave away the first snow thrower to a friend who organized a contest for health care workers with the unit being one of the prizes. The second snow thrower went to Cynthia’s dad who is in his 70s and loves how efficient and lightweight the snow thrower is. For the third snow thrower, Cynthia reached out to the Filipino Journal to help look for a deserving organization in the community. With recommendations from kababayans, the snow thrower was given to Bayanihan sa Winnipeg, a community service group whose volunteer works include shoveling and clearing snow for the seniors. Bayanihan sa Winnipeg headed by Edison Garcia expressed their gratitude to Greenworks Canada and Cynthia Reyes. "Malaking tulong po talaga itong snow blower sa volunteer work namin dahil mas napabilis po niya ang trabaho. Pang-one man show kasi naisasakay at naibaba sa sasakyan kahit isang tao lang," said Edison. (The snowblower is really a big help in our volunteer work because it speeds up the job. It's

like a one-man show because you can load it in and unload from the car by yourself.) More importantly, the equipment enables them to help more people. Mrs. Josie Rana is one kababayan that Edison helps regularly with clearing the snow and driving for her errands. She is in her 70s and lives alone. The day that FJ came to cover Edison’s work, a pile of snow was covering half of Josie’s door, making it hard for her to go out. Josie Rana is just one of the

many people who rely on Bayanihan sa Winnipeg for help. That is why opportunities that Cynthia Reyes shared with the group is something that they really appreciate and are grateful for because not only that it made their job easier, but it also allowed them to expand their capacity to help. For questions about their group and their volunteer works, you can go to Bayanihan sa Winnipeg Facebook page.

GMA Network raises the bar with first suspenserye ‘Widows’ Web’

B

eginning February 28, GMA Network brings forth a compelling and gripping family drama that will keep every Kapuso viewer at the edge of their seats via the first suspenserye 'Widows’ Web.’ Filled with intense and heart pounding scenes, the primetime series is headlined by brilliant and talented Kapuso stars – Ms Carmina Villarroel, Vaness Del Moral, Ashley Ortega, Pauline Mendoza – playing the roles of Barbara Sagrado-Dee, Hillary Suarez, Jackie Antonio Sagrado, Elaine Innocencio respectively. “How can I say no to this project? Ito ang unang suspenserye ng GMA. When this was offered to me, wala pa akong alam kung sino ‘yung ibang cast, pinabasa lang sa akin ‘yung synopsis and I said yes to do it right away without knowing lahat," shares Carmina who did not think twice about accepting this project. "The story itself captured my attention kasi gusto ko ‘yung ganon, every time I do something new, gusto ko yung ma-eexcite ako." Vaness skillfully steps into the role of Hillary, “Feeling ko naaadapt ko na yung aura ni Hillary sa totoong buhay. Parang nabubuhay si Hillary lalo dahil sa mga tao sa paligid ko. Hindi ko kaya ito as Vaness Del Moral lang. Maraming salamat sa lahat nang nagtatrabaho sa likod ng camera." Ashley, in turn, shares her from page 2

God, didn’t Biden remember history? What he did was appease Putin just like when Neville Chamberlain appeased Hitler in 1939 when he declared “Peace for our time" and signed a peace treaty with Hitler. Eight months later, Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia, which ignited World War II. Appeasing Putin Eighty-four years later, Putin invaded Ukraine. Appeasement failed to work again. With Russian troops and tanks battling their way inside Ukraine, missiles raining on Kyiv, and thousands of Ukrainians fleeing to Poland and Romania, Biden offered help to evacuate the Ukrainian refugees. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declined, saying, “We need ammunition, not a ride.” In an attempt to show that American forces are ready to help, Biden sent 800 U.S. troops to the Balkan States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, former Soviet republics that are on the border with Russia. Once again, it shows the tokenism that has characterized the Biden administration. On February 26, the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and Europe committed to remove some Russian banks from the SWIFT system -- Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication -- deploying

gratitude for landing the role of Jackie and how she works her way into channeling her, "I'm very grateful na nabigyan ako ng chance to star in this very beautiful project and na-pressure din ako at the same time kasi siyempre, bigatin ang mga

kasama ko sa series." Meanwhile, Pauline reveals how different and challenging her role is in the series, “This is my first ever matured role so this time, ibang Pauline Mendoza yung makikita nila sa show na ito."

Jennylyn Mercado swims with a style; shows baby bump

I

n her recent Instagram post, Kapuso actress Jennylyn Mercado, shared her swimming photo wearing a maternity swimsuit, showing off her baby bump. Jennylyn is on her third trimester carrying a baby girl. It will be remembered, as together with her husband Dennis Trillo, in their YouTube vlogs, that they got engaged and later married in November last year. The couple has been trying to conceive via surrogacy because Jennylyn had sensitive pregnancy before. The couple did not have to go through surrogacy as they conceived naturally.

A

what the French Finance Minister called a “financial nuclear weapon” because of the damage it would cause to Russia. At first, Biden was hesitant in supporting the expulsion of Russia from SWIFT. Arguably, it is one measure that appears to strike fear at the heart of the Kremlin, which is to cut Russia from the global banking system. It is interesting to note that in 2014, Iran was blocked from the SWIFT system because of its nuclear program. In 2019, then-Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said losing access to SWIFT would be akin to a declaration of war against Russia, which demonstrates how vulnerable – and dangerous -- Russia is to such action. I guess that’s what scared Biden. Deterrent move Indeed, SWIFT would be one deterrence that would stop Russia from further invading Ukraine, simply because it would cause severe economic dislocation in Russia. It might even bankrupt – and implode -- the Russian economy. That’s like dropping a nuclear bomb without the radioactive effect. We might witness the second disintegration of the former Soviet Empire. But after Putin broke his word that he’ll never invade Ukraine, Biden was still optimistic that “peace can be

achieved for our time.” “There’s still time to avert the worst-case scenario that will bring untold suffering to millions of people if they move as suggested,” Biden said. “The United States and our allies and partners remain open to diplomacy, if it is serious when all is said and done. We’re gonna judge Russia by its actions, not its words.” But Putin’s actions say it all: Ukraine has been invaded and thousands of Ukrainians are running to Poland, Romania, and Hungary. For all intents and purposes, World War III has begun! But if Biden wants to achieve peace, all he has to do is appease Putin by accepting his demands; to wit: (1) Ukraine promises never to join NATO; (2) Recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea; and (3) Demilitarize Ukraine’s armed forces. However, Ukraine has stood firm in its resolve to join NATO and the European Union in the future, which was enshrined in Ukraine’s constitution of 2019. Zelensky, ever defiant, said, “We are not afraid of anyone or anything.” Meanwhile, the Trump cult has gotten behind Putin. Following Trump who said that Putin is a “genius,” cult member Mike Pompeo parroted Trump’s

praise, saying Putin is “very shrewd, very capable. I have enormous respect for him.” Tucker Carlson, a FOX News host, had nothing but praises for Putin. But after Putin invaded Ukraine, Carlson changed his tune, which just shows if he truly means what he says on FOX News. At the end of the day, while I wish Biden would show more resolve in fighting for the Ukrainians’ independence, I hope that Putin would realize that threatening to use nuclear weapons

against the U.S. is nothing more like when children fight, threatening each other but hardly throwing a punch. In Putin’s case, his threat was nothing more than nuclear blackmail – mark of a coward -- that threatens to use nuclear weapons against the U.S. but doesn’t have the guts to press the First Strike button knowing too well that the U.S. would respond with a devastating Second Strike that could wipe out Moscow off the face of the Earth.

28% increase in heart diseases; attributed to the pandemic - PHA The Philippine Heart Association, during a Laging Handa briefing last March 3rd, reported that the cases of Heart Disease in the Philippines significantly increased by 28% which can be caused by the pandemic. PHA President Dr Gibert Vilela said that this rise in cases is surprising and frightening and that since it happened during the pandemic, it ,means that the pandemic actually has an effect on cardiovascular disease. Vilela said that cases might have increased because people with heart conditions were afraid to go to the hospitals as they may get infect by coronavirus . He added that anxiety and mental stress can

also lead to heart disease. Vilela called on people diagnosed with cardiovascular disease to get

their booster shots as this will give them another layer of protection from the virus.

he Department of Health expressed concerns last March 3, over the capacity of public utility vehicle (PUVs) under the pandemic quarantine system Alert Level 1 since it started on March 1. DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that what is concerning is that PUV operators go beyond the 100% capacity. She once again reminded the public that this over capacity can put the country back to the pre-pandemic situation. Meanwhile, the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic warned that the drivers who violate the rule and go beyond capacity will be issued violation tickets starting March 4.

MAPLE TAFFY IS BACK!

W

e were happy to see Festival du Voyageur open up again this year and continue the winter tradition of enjoying maple taffy again. The music, tents, and celebrations were back as last year festival was cancelled due to the Covid19 pandemic. The additional highlight of our day trip to Festival du Voyageur was scoring the official Voyageur family badge during our joint family photo at Voygeaur Park. While taking our own family photo, we were photo bombed by the Turenne Family, just outside Fort Gibraltar. Luc and Lorenzo were wearing their Festival du Voyageur sashes (ceinture fléchée in French) and were given the badges. He Ho! Bon Festival! See you again next year!

Remembering you forever... Oh, fourteen years of silent grief has turned into the celebration of your life fully lived, giving us the strength to continue your goals aimed to pursue but were cut short by your untimely demise. However, those colorful threads of living memories of your unconditional commitments to help the vibrancy of the Filipinos in Winnipeg and beyond are woven into a living tapestry of your legacy as we heartily pursue the vision and mission of Rosalinda Natividad Foundation into a moving spirit of helping the young people to realize their dreams as inspired by your genuine legacy. As strong as what you had said: "Sharing the piece of your heart to help others in need," we continue moving forward to make this involvement happen. #Justice4JohnLloyd

ineteen-year-old John Lloyd Barrion graduated high school in October 2021 then immediately found a job in a place that is just a block away from his house. His close friends described John Lloyd as a good person who followed the rules. However, on the early morning just after Valentine’s Day, tragedy struck him. John Lloyd sustained a gunshot wound while working at the beer vendor section of a hotel at 1400 Notre Dame. He was working alone when robbers attacked him before the closing of his shift at 2:30 am. At 3:10 am, he was found fighting for his life and later died in the hospital. Four days after the tragedy, John Lloyd’s family, friends and members of the community gathered in a vigil to light candles, offer prayers and remember the happier days with him. Despite the blizzard and temperature of -23 degrees, there were over 250 people that came. An indication that John Lloyd is well-loved in the community. “John Lloyd is an extremely caring and considerate type of person. He valued the people around him so much that despite having a busy schedule, he still found a way to spend quality time with the people he loved,” Frankie Mapuyan, a close friend of John Lloyd, describes him. Frankie said that one of his fond memories of John Lloyd was having a long drive to Birds Hill Lake with him and friends. Before they got there, they stopped by stores to buy snacks and drinks. As soon as they got there they swam and played games like tag. They ended the day off by having a late-night drive while listening to some tunes. Frankie is 18 years old and works in a restaurant in the north end of the city. Frankie and his close friends find it hard to accept the sudden death of John Lloyd.

They asked, “Why John Lloyd?” At the same time, they fear for the safety of youth like them, be it at the workplace or at home. It was only 3 years ago when then 17-year-old Jamie Adao died in a home invasion. “Our common sentiment is (we see the need) to establish safety standards in all establishments, especially graveyard shifts so that his death will serve as a wake-up call to further enhance safety measures in all establishments,” Frankie spoke about the concern that young workers are not safe in this city.

John Lloyd’s close friends started the hashtag #justice4johnlloyd. John Lloyd’s parents Maria and Manny, and his siblings are all calling for justice. Maria said that she does not want the same tragedy to happen to anyone, because the pain is too much to bear. She called on the government to do everything to protect the children from becoming victims of crime. The 204 Neighbourhood Watch Inc. volunteers reached out to the family of John Lloyd to provide them with Psychological First Aid. The group also organized the vigil. Joshua Lim started a GoFundMe fundraiser for John Lloyd’s funeral and memorials.

The Sleeping Beauty City of Havana (part 2) by Gem and Lita Anis

T

ime stands still in the historic capital of Havana, just like stepping back in time. We are here not only for history – it’s also for sun, surf and sand! From the Bacuranao Villas at the La Habana Del Este, , a cluster of small single-storey cottages spread over a sprawling property about 20 minutes bus ride to the city, we already love the experience of a bay with a beautiful sand beach on the oceanfront often quiet in the morning and noisy with the waves in the evening. For a week we enjoy our sojourn at the villas – with free breakfast at its on-site restaurant, ‘mojito’ drink in its lounge , and daily dip into its swimming pool..

A daily public bus trip to the capital city gives us enough time to hang out in “Parque Central”. Here the buzz and the noises created by the locals and the tourists are infectious. The Parque Central is one of the best known sites of Havana. You’ll be stunned by the building housing the Cuban National Ballet. Among the edifices surrounding the park are the Gran Teatro de la Havana, the famous Hotel Inglaterra, the Hotel Telegrafo, El Hotel Iberostar Parque Central, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, the Hotel Plaza, and the shopping complex known as “La Manzana de Gomez.” The Parque Central is dominated by the carrara white marble statue of the

Cuban national hero, Jose Marti, a poet, writer, lawyer, and fighter for Cuban independence and noted for his concepts of freedom, liberty and democracy in all of his works. The beautiful gardens surrounding the monument have a series of paths with its twenty-eight (28) royal palms that signify hero’s

birth date as well as eight (8) coffinshaped stonework representing the medical students shot by the Spanish government on the island during the 10-years war on 27 November 1871. No visit is complete without a photo in front of the Capitolio Nacional. Completed in 1929, it is a smaller replica of the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. We’ll get a glimpse of glory at the Plaza Vieja of the UNESCO World

15 Heritage Old City with almost 1,000 buildings of historic significance. We’ll also wander the narrow, congested but delightfully intriguing, cobbled surrounding streets of the Old City by hiring a “bici” taxi, the cycle rickshaw powered alone and propelled by muscle. And to top them all, we’ll sip a “mojito” a la Hemingway or “daiquiri” at the famous El Floridita and La Bodeguita del Medio. Trivia: Did you know that in 2015 Cuba became the first country in the world to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis?
