2023 Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade Winnipeg, MB – November 18 is going to be a busy day in downtown Winnipeg, and it’s the perfect time to get together with family and friends and celebrate local! The Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade kicks off the holiday season on Saturday, November 18, 2023, starting at 5:00 PM. The 2023 parade is following the same route that debuted in 2022: starting at Portage Avenue and Main Street, heading west down Portage Avenue until it turns south onto Memorial Boulevard. The parade ends at York Avenue. This year’s parade returns to an evening start, lighting up downtown with music, Christmas cheer, magic, and twinkling lights. “There’s something extraordinary about a nighttime parade,” says Monica Derksen, Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade Director. “We encourage Manitobans to come early for the Block Parties at 4:00 PM, enjoy the Parade at 5:00 PM, and grab tickets to the Winnipeg Jets game, starting at 6:00 PM, to embrace all things downtown and all things local.”

Catherine Wreford 2023 Grand Marshal

In addition to the Winnipeg Jets game at 6:00 PM at Canada Life Centre, there is also a student conference, a gala, and several additional events at downtown venues. The Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade encourages attendees to walk, cycle, take Winnipeg Transit, or carpool downtown and give themselves extra time to arrive. One parade attendee is excited for her first time at the Manitoba Hydro Santa Claus Parade, and

she has one of the best views of the parade. Catherine Wreford, Amazing Race Canada Winner, Cancer Survivor, Actor, Dancer, and Advocate, is kicking off the 2023 Manitoba Hydro Santa Parade as the Grand Marshal, leading the almost 50 entries throughout downtown Winnipeg. “I love everything to do with Christmas, and I’m looking forward to adding a new tradition for myself and my family,” says Catherine

Wreford. “I never had the opportunity to attend the parade as a kid as I was always dancing and then I moved away. Now I’m home and I’m honoured to be a part of the parade.” Parade spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and new unwrapped gifts for The Christmas Cheer Board. The associated charity will be collecting items in the Manitoba Hydro building atrium at 360 Portage Avenue and with volunteers along the parade route. Attendees are also reminded to

he atmosphere was electric and eclectic at the press conference held recently at Prairie's Edge Restaurant in Kildonan Park to unveil the Rainbow Stage's 70th Anniversary Season. Stakeholders brimmed with enthusiasm as they eagerly shared exciting details with the media about the highly anticipated homegrown musical. The passion was palpable in the eyes of the artists involved, including Carson Nattrass, Artistic Director, and Ma-buhay creator Joseph Sevillo, who also serves as a lyricist, actor, and choreographer. Carson Nattrass posited, "When Joseph brought the idea of Ma-Buhay to me, I thought it was so unique and completely original, like the Broadway hit musical, Hamilton! I thought we had to do this! He spoke passionately about the incredible singers and dancers in the community, so he wanted to create a musical for the Filipino community and bring their singing and dancing talents to the professional stage. And with the largest Filipino population per capita in Winnipeg, and the Rainbow Stage being the largest, longest-running open-air professional theatre in Canada, it's a match made in heaven." He further commented, "If we do it right, it will bring the Filipino community to Rainbow Stage and it will also welcome non-Filipino audiences to experience the rich cultural roots of the Filipinos in Winnipeg and beyond." When Joseph Sevillo was asked about his inspiration for writing the musical, he

said, "My parents believed in my dreams to pursue a career in the performing arts. I was inspired to create a show for other Filipinos who have similar dreams to sing, dance, and act on stage, and work offstage in the world of professional theatre." "Ma-Buhay" premiered in Canada to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Rainbow Stage. Sevillo said: "My expectations for my musical is to bring new audiences, such as the incredible population of Filipinos in Manitoba to live theatre hoping that they feel inspired and uplifted their spirits as they see the Filipino talents on the professional stage. Sevillo said that the local talents involved in the musical are ambitious, definitive work ethic, and have the drive to succeed anywhere in the world. With a spark in his eyes, Sevillo said: "Winnipeg talent for years has already proven that they can compete internationally, and my hope is that Ma-buhay The New Musical will be the first and next big Broadway Production from Manitoba." There was a preview of a medley of the song "Awit Ng Pag-Asa (Song of Hope) co-written by Joseph and by his mother, Teresita Sevillo, and performed by Rochelle Kives and Brady Barrientos. Ma-Buhay is the first Filipino musical in Manitoba to be commissioned and developed by Rainbow Stage for over five years and has developed more than 100 local Filipino artists.

10-1-1 in recent games against the Blues. Talk about dominance! Next, the Jets brought the thunder in their homestand opener, outshining the Nashville Predators in a dazzling 6-3 win. Kyle Connor was absolutely electric with his fifth career hat trick, and Mark Scheifele dazzled with four assists, tying a franchise record. The team's firepower was on full display, scoring five or more goals for the third game straight! Then, in a twist of fate, our

streak hit a bump with a close 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars. It was our first divisional defeat this season, but hey, even the best have off days, right? Cole Perfetti and Brenden Dillon kept the sparks flying, and Connor Hellebuyck was a wall with 26 saves. But fear not, the Jets were back in form in no time, cruising to a 6-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils. Kyle Connor was unstoppable, netting his 12th and 13th goals, while Nikolaj Ehlers doubled up on the fun with two goals of his own. And let's not forget Josh Morrissey, who tied a franchise record with four assists – talk about playmaking magic! With the Jets' record now at a cool 8-5-2, the anticipation for Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres is through the roof! Expect high-octane action, spectacular goals, and some top-notch goaltending from our very own Hellebuyck. Meet and Greet with NHL Dallas Stars' Jason Robertson Empowering Filipino Youth in Hockey

I

n a heartening display of sportsmanship and community engagement, NHL Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson recently hosted a meet and greet with young Filipino hockey players and their parents, igniting a wave of enthusiasm for hockey among the small intimate group at Canada Life Centre. This event aimed to make hockey more accessible to diverse communities, particularly Filipino youth. Robertson, who has Filipino heritage himself, shared personal anecdotes and professional insights, inspiring the attendees with his journey in the sport. His engaging discussions about the importance of dedication, family support, and enjoying the game resonated deeply

with both the children and their parents, fostering a sense of belonging and motivation in the sport. To the young players, he advised, "Have fun, work hard, and trust your family and friends. Don't let anyone bring you down. Just keep working through it." To the parents, he emphasized, "the biggest thing is to be super supportive. My parents got heavily involved. It's a big commitment and I wouldn't be here without them." The First Shift program's commitment to providing a friendly and fun environment for learning hockey aligns with Robertson's advocacy for the sport as an inclusive and enjoyable activity. His involvement served as a powerful endorsement for the initiative, emphasizing its importance in nurturing the next generation of hockey players. The post-game meet and greet also commemorated the 2022 Inaugural Filipino Heritage Night, a landmark occasion that kickstarted various Filipino youth hockey initiatives. This special night was not only a celebration of culture but also a catalyst for greater involvement of the Filipino community in hockey. The Heritage Night's success paved the way for more inclusive and diverse participation in the sport, something that was evident in the enthusiasm of the young players and their families at the meet and greet.

Jason Robertson's meet and greet was more than just an interaction with a sports star; it was a cornerstone event in promoting hockey among Filipino youth. It underscored the importance of representation in sports and highlighted how events like the Filipino Heritage Night have already created lasting impacts

on community engagement in sports. Robertson has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for many young aspiring athletes, demonstrating that with passion, hard work, and community support, anything is possible in the world of sports. Photo credit: Mike Macaraeg l Filipino Journal

administrators such as Nonoy Eman, Mang Johnny Ortizo, and Toto Sarmento. It comprises dedicated committee officers—Cielo Casumpang, Sheena Cadiz, Zack Cadiz, Meloy Guzman, Rhiz Aco, Jovy Luntao, Cristina Mapuyan, and Ma-Mhar Gayula. Beyond cultural unity, (Aton

Continuing the Hockey Journey First Shift Program’s Winter Expansion and Second Shift Debut

T

he First Shift program, after an inspiring fall session, is gearing up for its winter segment. Throughout the fall session, over 60 kids, primarliy from new Canadian immigrant families, embraced the ice, learning not just the techniques of hockey but also the values of teamwork and community. The sessions have been transformative, witnessing participants evolve from cautious beginners to confident players. Now, the program is set to embark on its winter journey, ready to introduce another 60 kids to the joys of hockey. The continuous efforts of the NHL Jets, Jets Hockey Development, Apna Hockey, Bauer Hockey, Hockey for All Centre, and First Shift Hockey have been pivotal in this expansion, ensuring the program's sustainability and impact. Additionally, the First Shift program is evolving with a new phase called 'Second Shift,' set to commence in April. This progression allows current First Shift fall players to continue honing their skills

and passion for the game, further solidifying the program's commitment to long-term player development and inclusion. The evolution of the program from the South Asian and Filipino Heritage Night games in the 202223 season has been remarkable. It highlights the unifying power of sports and the importance of creating inclusive spaces in Canadian culture. Coaches from Paul Coffey's and the Winnipeg Emperors, who generously volunteered their time and expertise during the fall session, will continue to play a crucial role. Their dedication is a testament to the program's community spirit. For Allan Chan, and his son, Brayden Chan, the program’s expansion is a source of immense pride. It's not just about teaching hockey; it's about nurturing a sport that is reflective of Canada's diverse fabric. The First Shift program, now evolving into Second Shift, stands as a shining example of how sports can bridge gaps and foster a sense of belonging and unity.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution (& closely related styles) part 49

T

oo many genres, bands, and albums to check out and dive into; so little time and a limited budget to be able to immerse in all of them. But, in fairness, I try my best to keep myself updated especially with my favorites. After all, music has always been a part of my life. Previously, I featured selected albums from some of the pioneers of Shoegaze. To expand its scope, a friend of mine cited a number of contemporary representatives of the genre--Spool, Mushroom Empire, Split End, For Tracy Hyde, Luby Sparks, and Regal Lily. I already previewed some of them, and I liked what I heard. I will surely keep them on my radar. In the meantime, here's another set of '90s-released albums that fit the

Remulla Foresees Acquittal for De Lima in Final Drug Case

I

n a significant turn of events, former senator Leila de Lima has attended the hearing for her last drug case at the Muntinlupa Hall of Justice on November 13, 2023. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin stated there is a considerable chance De Lima will be acquitted after a Muntinlupa court granted her bail. Remulla emphasized the significance of bail being granted, indicating the strength of evidence presented by the prosecution. He highlighted that De Lima's final drug case, involving an alleged

conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading with New Bilibid Prison inmates, is typically non-bailable. Judge Gener Gito of the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 206 allowed De Lima to post P300,000 bail, citing a lack of substantial evidence from the prosecution. Former Supreme Court senior associate justice Antonio Carpio voiced skepticism about the case, stating that there should not have been a case against De Lima in the first place. The Commission

on Human Rights welcomed the decision, emphasizing the right to a fair trial and speedy disposition of cases. De Lima, having spent nearly seven years in prison, revealed in an interview that she has forgiven those behind her detainment, except for former president Rodrigo Duterte. She plans to pursue legal action against those who fabricated charges and monitor the International Criminal Court's investigation into Duterte's alleged crimes against humanity.

Commission on Human Rights Faces Budget Scrutiny Over Abortion Support

A

midst debates on the decriminalization of abortion in the Philippines, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is at risk of a "zero budget" for the next year. Four male senators, including Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, questioned CHR's support for a bill advocating abortion rights, citing concerns about the commission's stance conflicting with religious beliefs and constitutional provisions. During the Senate's deliberations on CHR's 2024 budget on November 14, Cayetano, identifying as a Christian, criticized CHR's position on abortion, deeming it contradictory to Church teachings, which consider abortion a "mortal sin." He referenced the 1987 Constitution's provision emphasizing the state's duty to protect the lives of both mothers and unborn children from conception. Despite the Philippines having some of the world's most stringent abortion laws, an estimated 1.26 million Filipino women, including

n a recent announcement, the Vatican has reaffirmed its longstanding prohibition on Catholics becoming Freemasons, a clandestine society with an estimated global membership of six million. The Vatican's doctrinal office, the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith, published a letter on Wednesday, signed by Pope Francis, emphasizing the "irreconcilability" between Catholic doctrine and Freemasonry. The directive responds to concerns raised by a bishop in the Philippines regarding the increasing number of Freemasons in the country. The Vatican, citing a 1983 declaration signed by the late Pope Benedict XVI, states that Catholics involved in Masonic associations are in a "state of grave sin" and

are not permitted to receive Holy Communion. The letter comes on the heels of another announcement from the same Vatican office, affirming that transgender individuals can partake in Catholic sacraments such as baptism and serve as godparents. Freemasonry, often associated with male-only lodges, arcane symbols, and rituals, has faced historical hostility from the Catholic Church, with links to conspiracy theories alleging influence on global affairs. The United Grand Lodge of England, a prominent Masonic organization, asserts that Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest social and charitable groups, boasting famous historical members such as Prince Philip, Winston Churchill, and Rudyard Kipling.

Feeling Blessed Ngayong Pasko! GMA Network Encourages Everyone to Be Each Other's Blessing

G

MA Network ushers in the holiday spirit with the official launch of its 2023 Christmas Station ID, "Feeling Blessed Ngayong Pasko!" The message is a simple and beautiful reminder of the season's true essence: loving one another and being a blessing to each other. Empathy, generosity, and selflessness are at the heart of this year's theme. In the holiday video, beloved Kapuso stars and personalities shine a light on everyday folk – giving themselves to their families and respective communities in ways big and small. First seen on November 5 in 'All-Out Sundays,' the Christmas video showcases some of the country’s biggest names in entertainment, news, and public affairs led by Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Alden Richards, Michael V., Heart Evangelista, Bea Alonzo, Barbie Forteza, Dennis Trillo, Mel Tiangco, Vicky Morales, and Jessica Soho. The video begins with them encouraging everyone to appreciate their blessings and pay it forward with love: "Mga Kapuso, ang sarap talaga ng feeling kapag Kapaskuhan kasi

feel na feel talaga nating lahat kung gaano tayo ka-blessed! Bawat isa sa atin, may kakayahang magpasaya ng iba. Sa maliit man o malaking paraan, pwede nating i-share ang ating love!" Though the video features the Network's roster of popular and multiawarded artists as they hang parols and other Christmas decorations, the spotlight belongs to everyday people. They include delivery rider Elmer Mallanao, whose hard work led to his daughter's academic success when she graduated cum laude; RM Capillas, who left his BPO career to devote full-time care to his grateful foster father Avelino; pharmacist Arshie Larga who shares his blessings by providing free medicine; Nanay Bernadeta Zamora, whose life was saved thanks to the quick actions of nursing students Angyl Fayth Ababat and Kristianne Joice Noelle Ona; and Michael Kimuell, a hardworking jeepney driver who waives the fare should his passenger find themselves short. The Kapuso Network also paid tribute to veteran broadcaster Mike Enriquez by remembering his generosity. He was the biggest

donor of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Abandoned in Santa Ana, Manila. As Christmas approaches, GMA Network encourages everyone to find blessedness and gratitude in their lives. Blessings abound, especially during the holiday season: children getting their wish; overseas workers flying home to be with their loved ones; and friends making time to catch up and renew their ties. When blessed to feel such joy, why not share it with others? To give and to serve is to also feed hope in a world where challenges remain following the last few years. To best move forward, it is important for people to remember how blessed they are and to share this so others may also find happiness. Thus, in keeping true to the spirit of Christmas, GMA calls on Filipinos to be instruments of love and be each other’s blessings.
