FILIPINO LEADERSHIP SHINES AT NATIONAL CONVENTION

FAAM Hosts Annual Shore Fishing Derby

The Filipino Anglers Association of Manitoba hosted their 8th Annual Shore Fishing Derby on Sunday September 29. The event, held in Memory of Ferdinand Balite, took place on the Red River at Selkirk Park. There were 75 participants, including 20 youth, competing for over $2000 in cash and prizes!

Fish were scored throughout the 9am to 2pm derby with a final total of 59 fish scored of eight different species. It was great that 9 of the fish scored were by youth competitors (age 13 and under). The largest fish of the competition was a 28.5 inch carp caught by Chris Javate. There were three greenback walleye caught with the longest one being 18” caught by Justine Ross. Incredibly there was only one catfish caught despite many anglers targeting them using shrimp, frogs, and cut bait. Cesar Oracion was able to bring in an 18.50” channel catfish with only six minutes left to go in the derby.

Congratulations to the Overall Total Length Champion Vic Guarana who caught an amazing 13 fish for a total length of 160.75” winning $600! He also won the Most Species Award catching four distinct kinds of fish (goldeye, sauger, silver bass, and sauger). Guarana had two instances of catching two fish at the same time on his pickerel rig which helped to put him over the top against second place finisher Bernard Reyes. Reyes caught 8 fish for a total of 100.50” winning $300. Third place finisher was Joel Juavana with 5 fish totaling 59.50” winning $150.

The Youth Division was dominated by a Guarana as well. Billy Guarana caught 4 fish for a total of 48.50” winning $100 sponsored by 2 Rivers Boat Works. 2nd place was won by six year old Beau Castro who caught 2 fish totaling 26.25” winning $50 sponsored by Smoke N’ Fish. 3rd place was won by Cindy Cai who caught 1 fish at 11” also winning $50 sponsored by Smoke N’ Fish in Selkirk.

Huge thanks to the Balite family for all of their support in running this great event. Stay tuned for our first ever FAAM Ice Derby this winter. Calls to End Hazing Intensify After Atio Castillo Verdict and New Hazing Death

MANILA, Philippines — A Manila court's conviction of 10 Aegis Juris fraternity members for the 2017 hazing death of Horacio "Atio" Castillo III has reignited calls to eradicate hazing in the Philippines. The Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 11 sentenced the fraternity members to 20 to 40 years in prison for violating the Anti-Hazing Law of 1995.

The UST Political Science Forum, Castillo's undergraduate council, praised the verdict, stating it sends a clear message against fraternity violence. "Fraternities represent outdated systems that perpetuate corrupt practices in our nation, which we should eliminate," the council declared.

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, who led the Senate investigation into Castillo’s death, warned that the conviction serves as a strong deterrent to organizations still engaging in hazing. “This verdict is a warning against those who continue this criminal practice," Zubiri added.

In a tragic turn of events, news of another hazing-related death emerged. Ren Joseph Bayan, 18, reportedly died after initiation rites conducted by the Tau-Gamma Phi fraternity in Nueva Ecija. Zubiri condemned the incident, emphasizing, "Hazing is a crime, plain and simple. Those responsible must face the full force of the law." The suspects remain at large.

chanted “walang magbabalik,” in reference to rumors that former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso might seek to reclaim the city’s top post. Lacuna, echoing her supporters, remarked, “Bawal ang taksil,” though she clarified that this sentiment reflected the emotions of her supporters, not a direct attack.

Lacuna emphasized her commitment to continuing the programs she and Servo implemented during their first term, ensuring

the services provided reach all Manileños. "We still have many projects underway, and it's only right that we continue what we've started," she said.

Isko Moreno, meanwhile, expressed no animosity towards Lacuna, simply stating, "Peace be with you," when asked about her comments. He emphasized that the people of Manila would ultimately decide.

Filipino Parents Glide into Fun with Free Learn-to-Skate Program

Imagine this: parents cheering from the sidelines while their kids zip around the ice during hockey practice. Now, picture those same parents lacing up their own skates and joining in on the action. That’s exactly what QPAM’s Adult Learn-to-Skate program is all about — giving Filipino parents a chance to step off the bleachers and onto the ice!

Back for its second run, this free program is a hit among Filipino adults aged 18 to 80+, many of whom are completely new to skating. It’s not just about learning how to skate; it’s about creating family memories and a shared love for the rink. Whether you’ve been watching your kids skate for years or are simply curious about skating yourself, this program offers the perfect opportunity to glide alongside them.

Thanks to the generous support of the Arts, Culture, and Sport

Community Fund, QPAM was able to launch the program at Seven Oaks Arena. It’s designed to empower Filipino adults, particularly parents who have children in skating and minor hockey programs, to master the basics of skating in a fun, welcoming environment.

“It’s all about community and family bonding through skating,” said Ron Cantiveros, the program’s enthusiastic director. “We see so many parents watching their kids take their first strides on the ice. We want them to join in, make new memories, and perhaps discover a passion they can enjoy together for years to come.”

The current session kicked off on Saturday, September 21, and will run for 10 fun-filled weeks, ending in mid-December. But don’t worry if you missed this round! A fresh session starts in January, giving more parents the chance to trade their shoes for skates. With

spots filling up fast, there’s even a waitlist for those eager to join. Interested in joining the

skating fun? Reach out to QPAM at qpaminc@gmail.com to secure your spot or hop on the waitlist. Get

ready to laugh, learn, and maybe even wobble a bit on your way to mastering the ice with your kids!

Reynold Reyes inducted into the 2024 Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame

His legacy started in 1973 and sparked more interest in basketball until today

"Our next inductee is someone who may not be well known to many here tonight. Some make their impact with lots of fanfare, others do it quietly. According to the dictionary, trailblazer and pioneer mean a leader in one specific field, a person who goes before preparing the way for others. This is what real builders do, and we are proud to honor one tonight whose legacy continues today as many Filipino basketball leagues are operating today and the many highly skilled Filipino basketball players who are becoming a big part of basketball in Manitoba. Tonight with his wife, Leticia, their son, Jon, and family and friends. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Reynold Reyes," as introduced by Ross Wedlake, chairman, of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum Committee.

The community involvement of Reynold Reyes started when he led an organization of three volunteerdriven leagues from 1973 to 1977 when he was elected president of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBAW), the first Filipino basketball league. In 1984-85, he was the chairperson of the Barangay Filipino Organization of Manitoba's (BFOM) Basketball League, and in 1986-88, he was elected president of the Philippine National Youth Cagers League (PNYC). The opportunities Reynold Reyes gave to the youth of all nationalities paved the foundation for many other basketball leagues. And his legacy is seen today in how many people are still involved in basketball. In accepting the honor,

Reynold Reyes, in a soft voice with warm message, "It brings me an immense joy to see how basketball leagues have grown in popularity in our community, like WAAY, IKAW, Sabado League, PBA and the Prairie Basketball League in Steinbach. I am grateful for the dedicated volunteers, past and present who have contributed to this league, like my brother-in-law, Angel Martinez, and Leo Sadiua, to mention a few, ensuring all kids and players have a chance to play. It's inspiring to see other clubs like the Winnipeg Blizzard nurturing outstanding talents like Sean Maranan who has a remarkable career at the University of Winnipeg and is now a member of the Winnipeg's Sea Bears. Thank you to Leo Sadiua, a former player of the league and also an organizer, for your kind words for your valuable support for this honor; and thank you to Rod E. Cantiveros, publisher and the Filipino Journal for preserving the news and photos that helped in my nomination as an inductee to the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.

I want to acknowledge my son, Jon Reyes for collaborating with Rod E. Cantiveros to submit my application. As I told you before, Jon, our name REYES will forever grace the walls of respected institutions, you, at the Manitoba Legislature, and mine, in the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.

And I am proud to have played a positive role for you and your sisters' lives here in Canada.

Lastly, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my wife, Leticia Reyes, for supporting my journey through the years. It wasn't me leading three basketball leagues. It was you and the spouses of our volunteers who stood with us. I couldn't have done it without you.

"Thank you for joining me tonight to celebrate this honour with my fellow inductees. Thank you very much."

Other inductees include two players, Jennifer Finch, of Manitoba Bisons; and Keith Strieter, Brandon University's Bobcat players. Other 2024 Inductees Builders include Wes Crymble, an on-court basketball official in Manitoba; Joe Di Curzio, a successful coach in Manitoba; and Tom Kendall, a Women's Coach of the University of Winnipeg's Wesmen Women Team. Teams inducted include Neelin Spartans Varsity Girls and St. Laurent Hawks Varsity Boys.

The induction dinner event was held at Victoria Inn. Emceed by Ross Wedlake.

A Day Trip Adventure: From Winnipeg to Rushing River Provincial Park

Last month, we decided to escape the city for a day and make the drive from Winnipeg to Rushing River Provincial Park, just past Kenora. It was a beautiful sunny morning as we hit the TransCanada Highway, eagerly anticipating a day of nature, family, and food. The drive from Winnipeg to Kenora took just under two hours, and the scenery became more stunning as we crossed into Ontario, with the lush forests and sparkling lakes welcoming us along the way.

We quickly stopped in Kenora to grab a few essentials, stretching our legs while taking in the view of Lake of the Woods. Kenora’s charming small-town vibe and waterfront made it a great pit stop before continuing on. From there, it was only a short 20-minute drive to Rushing River Provincial Park.

Once at the park, we quickly found a cozy spot by the river to set up for lunch. The highlight of the day was grilling ribeye steaks, smokies

and Filpino chicken inasal over charcoal, the smoky aroma blending with the fresh scent of pine trees. There’s something magical about cooking outdoors, especially with the soothing sounds of the rushing river nearby.

After a delicious meal, we decided to cool off with a swim in the park’s calm waters. The kids splashed around while we floated and soaked in the peaceful surroundings. The combination of crystal-clear water and the sun shining through the trees made it the perfect summer escape.

Before heading back to Winnipeg, we stopped by a nearby campsite where family members were enjoying their weekend. They convinced us to return next summer to try kayaking and perhaps even camp for a few nights ourselves.

Rushing River Provincial Park is truly a gem, just a few hours’ drive from Winnipeg. Next time, we’ll be sure to stay longer and explore even more!

Summer vibes at Rushing River Provincial Park near Kenora, Ontario.
Note to self, bring a kayak for my next visit to Rushing River. Lots more to explore.

Packing Nutritious and Easy School Lunches for Filipino Kids

Filipino school lunches can combine the best of traditional flavors with healthy, easy-to-prepare options. Whether you’re packing adobo or tocino alongside fruits and veggies, here are some ways to ensure your child’s lunch is both nutritious and delicious.

Pack healthy versions of Filipino classics like adobo, sinigang, or pandesal sandwiches. For example, try using lean meats, adding more vegetables, or opting for whole grain pandesal. Combine these dishes with saging na saba or fresh fruits like mangga or pakwan to add a healthy balance.

Kids love familiar foods, so keep things interesting by using small portions of different items in a bento box style. Include small servings of lumpiang shanghai, pinakbet, or a healthy version of kare-kare with a side of kamatis or pipino to make the meal fun yet familiar.

Batch cooking works well in Filipino households. Prepare larger portions of dishes like tinola or menudo on weekends and portion them out for school lunches throughout the week. This saves time while ensuring your child gets the comforting taste of home.

Introduce healthy Filipino snacks like banana cue, camote fries, or puto to your child’s lunchbox. These snacks are naturally delicious and pack nutrition,

offering a break from sugary or processed options. Pair them with a buko or mango smoothie for extra energy.

Instead of sugary drinks, pack water flavored with calamansi or pandan leaves. This refreshing twist on traditional water will keep your child hydrated without the added sugars.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 70

In the 1980s and through the 1990s, many bands whose music may be regarded as Jangle Pop / Guitar Pop / Indie Pop--best characterized by the chiming, ringing, and jangly sound of the guitar tracks and occasional synth washes and string/woodwind ornamentation--began adorning the everexpanding New Wave spectrum. The Smiths, Orange Juice, The Housemartins, and Aztec Camera were just some of the pioneers.

The Psychedelic Pop and Folk Rock of the 1960s were primary roots of that kind of music--epitomized by the likes of The Who, The Cyrkle, The Byrds, The Five Americans, The Zombies, The Searchers, and Manfred Mann.

Padyakers Winnipeg and Spandex Cycling Club Conquer RBC

Gran Fondo Whistler: 152 km of Endurance and Elevation

Padyakers Winnipeg and Spandex Cycling Club did it again! The groups went to British Columbia last September 7, 2024 to join the best and the biggest endurance cycling race in North America, the RBC Gran Fondo Whistler

The route is 152 kms and takes participating cyclists from Vancouver Island and finishing in the hills of Whistler Village. The ride commenced from the Stanley Park in Vancouver with the pace increasing to a steady flow as thousands of cyclists all over the world pedaled along the Vancouver Seawall towards the towering Lions Gate Bridge. Over the bridge is where the first big climb began. Our Winnipeg cyclists was fuelled by enthusiastic cheers and encouragement from spectators lining the roads that rises steeply up Sentinel Hill towards Cypress Mountain then to Sea-toSky Highway.

While this is not the farthest that the group has ever ridden in one day, the main feat was the elevation gain. Over 3000 meters from start to finish and hitting a maximum gradient of 15%. The group’s primary objective is to finish the ride within 8 hours or less in which all of them achieved while still managing to enjoy the experience that this event has to offer.

The final push to Whistler brings endless climbing hills but as their legs started to give way to exhaustion, all the cyclists was met by the entire Whistler Village cheering on everybody as their names was called upon one after the other as they cross the finish line and awarded a medal.

WALT DISNEY WORLD, The Most Magical Place On Earth (part 2)

You don't have to go far to get away - it works at exploring Walt Disney World's EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) that showcases world modern innovations featuring eleven (11) pavilions representing the countries of Canada, Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, USA, Japan, Morocco, France, and the United Kingdom.

First in our bucket list is the Canada Pavilion - proud of the Rockies, the Victorian Gardens, waterfalls, a native-Canadian Village, the totem poles, and the mansardroofed Victorian-style Hotel du Canada.

What is the Canada show in Epcot? It's called "Canada Far and Wide" which features updated sequences of a musical score by Canadian composer Andrew Lockington and narration by Canadian actors Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy.

And nestled underneath the Canada Pavilion is the "Le Cellier's", the name of the steakhouse restaurant with its gracious service and delicious menu.

Because we have been longing to be transported to North Africa we decided to explore the Morocco Pavilion located between Japan and France Pavilions. Morocco is a mountainous country of western North Africa that lies directly across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain.

The Moroccan Pavilion is designed to look like a Moroccan city with the famous minaret. Its Gallery of Arts and History reveals the lifestyle and culture of the Moroccan people. The "Fez" house shows guests the typical Moroccan house. Inside the pavilion you could see the North African plants including citrus trees, date palms, olives, and beautiful fountains. The courtyard hosts to entertainment, and you have to wait until the

evening to watch and enjoy the belly dancing show, maybe after feasting on a roast lamb dinner at its Marrakesh Restaurant, along with Tangerine Cafe.

Next we found ourselves strolling through the gates to the Magic Kingdom Theme Park, dedicated to fairytales and Disney characters, where you can see fantasy becomes a reality as you explore Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and Main Street, USA.

Cinderella Castle with its lofty spires and ornate turrets and

lighted by fireworks every evening is the gateway to Fantasyland.

Surrounded by a tranquil moat,it contains Cinderella's wishing well. Inside the castle you can view the glass mosaics telling the story of Cinderella's rise from an orphan to a princess.

Based on Disney's classic animated films, Fantasyland will take you back to your childhood right into a fairytale. Experience again such classics like "It's a small world", Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh or Mickey's Magic. "Soak 'N' Splash Station" is

the place to take the kids when they need to cool off after enjoying the Barnstormer with its Dumbo the Flying Elephant. There is Big Top Treats here like cotton candy, caramel apple, and drinks. Visit also the Enchanted Forests with its Seven Dwarfs Mini Train, a familyfriendly roller coaster that brings visitors on a musical journey into the dwarf's diamond mine. Enjoy the "Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid". If you like the "Beauty and the Beast" visit the Gaston's Tower. Till next time. Keep on traveling.
