he great news for Canada and Mexico border visitors is that the U.S. will be lifting land restrictions in November! The new regulations should allow fully vaccinated people access to enter, but they may only stay up to 180 days without obtaining another visa or passport from their own country first (and even then there are other limitations). The United States just announced plans this week which could potentially pave the way towards more relaxed travel policies for Canadian citizens crossing the border.

Ellen and Derek’s Steamy Prenup Pictorial On their respective social media pages, Ellen Adarna and Derek Ramsay posted images from the shoot with in-demand wedding photographer Pat Dy on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. The celebrity couple released their prenuptial pictorial, indicating a nearing wedding date. The road trip-themed shoot sees the engaged couple inside a car and then outdoors atop a mountain, wearing neutral ensembles and denim and white looks as they share intimate moments. Adarna, 33, and Ramsay, 44, became officially a couple on February 4, 2021, and got engaged on March 30, 2021. On her Instagram actress and mom, Ellen shares that this is their first shoot together, while Derek shares on his Instagram account sweet messages like “Can’t wait love!!” Apart from their steamy shots, we also see some sweet prenup portraits, especially in their tight shots. “My forever D,” Adarna said of her fiancé. Sharon: ‘heavy heart’ as husband Kiko and Tito Sotto compete for VP in 2022 Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Sharon Cuneta revealed she felt grief as her husband, Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, and Senate President Tito Sotto, her uncle, both ran for the vice presidency in Eleksyon 2022. In an Instagram post, Sharon said "I come home with a happy, but a heavy heart. Two men I greatly love, one whom I have known since birth, and the other, one I exchanged solemn vows with twenty-five years ago, are about to vie for the second-highest position in the country, and once again, I do not know what I could have done so wrong to find myself in the

midst of two rocks". Cuneta and Pangilinan this year celebrated their silver or 25th wedding anniversary. Sotto meanwhile is the husband of Cuneta's aunt, Helen Gamboa. Pangilinan is the running mate of Vice President Leni Robredo, who is seeking the presidency in next year's elections. Sotto meanwhile will be Sen. Panfilo "Ping" Lacson's running mate for their vice-presidential and presidential bid respectively in Eleksyon 2022. Sharon prayed for healing for their families despite their differences in politics. "It is most difficult for us in the periphery, who never imagined we would be

ctor Jake Cuenca was arrested after a car chase with the police on Saturday evening, October 9, 2021. Cuenca's black Jeep Wrangler had allegedly hit a police vehicle in Barangay Barangka Ibaba, Mandaluyong as cops were in the middle of a buy-bust operation. Instead of stopping, Cuenca was said to have driven away, prompting the police to chase after him. Near Shaw Boulevard, police shot at the Wrangler's wheels to stop the car.

Cuenca was then apprehended and brought to the Mandaluyong Police Station and was charged with a case of disobedience and reckless imprudence, according to the Eastern Police District. Though this did ground Cuenca, 43-year-old delivery rider Eleazar Maritinito was hit by a stray bullet. Maritinito was brought to Rizal Medical Center, where he recovered. Police General Guillermo Eleazarr apologized to Maritinito in a statement,

THE PHILIPPINE POLITICAL CIRCUS BEGINS

s expected, the 2022 Philippine presidential election will be one of the most – if not the most – interesting elections in the Philippines. It is a political alchemy of various personalities that includes a former boxing great, the heir of the late dictator, a colorful Manila mayor, two former national police chiefs, and the widow of an assassinated popular political heavyweight. The people are energized to elect the next president who – as usual – promises to bring “peace and prosperity” to a third-world country that dreams of greatness since the corrupt late dictator promised to make the Philippines great again. Thus was born the “Great Again Society,” which was as promising as it was half a century ago when it became the rallying cry of the “New Balintawak,” which was “For God and country: Guns, goons, and gold” – the three G’s that brought the Marcos family to the forefront of greed, ambition, and power. But in the end, the people revolted and sent the Marcoses to exile in Hawaii. Thirty-two years later, the heirs of Marcos brought home the remains of the dictator and retreated to Ilocos Norte where they slowly rebuilt their political base, which remained loyal to their “Apo Lakay” to this day. That was the Solid North that brought to the presidency of Elpidio Quirino, Carlos P. Garcia

(parents were Ilocanos), Ramon Magsaysay, Ferdinand Marcos, and Fidel Ramos. The loyal Ilocanos hope Bongbong Marcos would be next, which would mark 2022 as the rebirth of the Marcos dynasty or if he fails, its final political burial year. So, with that introduction, let the circus begin! As of the final filing date last October 8, more than 90 Filipinos have filed their certificates of candidacy (COC). I’m not going to name all of them since most of them filed just to have the bragging right of “being a presidential candidate.” There are however, a handful of serious candidates. They are the following (in no particular order): Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. – This is Bongbong’s second attempt to run for higher office. He was beaten by Vice President Leni Robredo in 2016 when he ran for Vice President. His popularity stands at 20%. Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo -- Although she’s the incumbent Vice President, Leni’s popularity is less than 10%. However, she’s always been behind in ratings since she first entered politics. She first ran as Congresswoman in Camarines Sur’s 3rd congressional district in 2013 beating the wife of former Congressman Luis Villafuerte of the politically powerful Villafuerte political dynasty. In 2016, she ran for Vice

Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson President and won. She became the voice and face of the opposition. In 2018, she criticized China for establishing missiles in the West Philippine Sea. On October 7, 2021, she announced her candidacy for President as an independent although she remains a member and chairman of the Liberal Party. Clearly, she’s distancing herself from the “dilawan” (yellow) brand of the Liberal Party. To accentuate her independence, she adopted “pink” as the color of her candidacy. But make no mistake, the Liberal Party supports her candidacy and is expected to campaign for her. In explaining why she picked “pink,” Leni said, “This is a different fight. We have a bigger fight ahead. This is a battle against the comeback of the dictator’s son and incompetent governance which is the root of our problems.” Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao – After announcing his retirement from boxing on September 29, 2021, after a record of 62-8-2, 39 KOs at age 42, Manny declared two days later that he was running for President. One of the greatest boxing champions of all time, “Pacman,” as he was known in the ring, won 12 world titles in eight weight divisions. The presidency would be the apex of his rise to greatness. Manny was so poor that he stopped his studies in high school to help earn money for his family. In 2007, he took, and passed, a high school equivalency exam making him eligible for college education. In the same year, he ran for Congress and lost. Never a quitter, he ran again in 2010 and won. He was reelected in 2013. In 2016, he ran for Senator and won. Surely, he has the mentality of a winner. Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko”

Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa Moreno Domagoso – Isko Moreno is running for president in his first attempt at national politics. He was first elected Vice Mayor of Manila in 2019 when he unseated Manila mayor and former president Joseph “Erap” Estrada. A former actor who grew up in the slums of Tondo, Isko Moreno – his name as an actor -- acknowledged that he doesn't have an extensive educational background and he doesn't come from a powerful political clan. He’s using his successful programs and projects to propel him to the presidency. "I do not run on promises. I run on prototypes," the 46-year-old mayor said during his campaign launch in Tondo. Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson -- Ping Lacson first ran for president as an independent in 2004 when he suffered a landslide defeat at the hands of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. He finished third in a five-way contest. A graduate of the Philippine Military Academy, he ran on a campaign against illegal drugs, criminality, and corruption, which was his forte as a former Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief. After Estrada was ousted in 2001, Lacson won a seat in the Senate that same year, and proceeded to win two more terms. He remained an independent since then. In 2021, Lacson was named the chairman of the revived Partido Reporma. He and his running mate former Senate President Tito Sotto launched their candidacies last August 4. Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa – Bato rose to prominence when President Duterte appointed him as PNP Chief in 2016. He led the Oplan Tokhang, the controversial “war on drugs” campaign. As a result, several groups including human rights groups and religious leaders strongly objected to Dela Rosa

FilipinoJournal.com

and President Duterte’s initiatives. In 2018, Dela Rosa was appointed as Director General of the Bureau of Corrections. The following year, he ran for Senator and won. On October 8, he announced his candidacy for President, which surprised a lot of people. Why was he running for President, they asked? Speculations started to spread that Dela Rosa was running for President and then Sara Duterte-Carpio will substitute for him on November 15, when substitutions are allowed. It’s interesting to note that President Duterte used the same playbook in 2015 when he ran as a substitute for an unknown candidate who gladly allowed Duterte to take his place. I am not going to discuss the other presidential candidates whom I believe have not an iota of chance of winning. At best, they’re spoilers who just wanted to brag about their presidential candidacies. On the Vice Presidential contest, so far Leni Robredo has announced Senator Francisco “Kiko” Pangilinan to be her running mate; Ping Lacson has picked Tito Sotto; Pacquiao picked former Mayor Lito Atienza as his running mate; and Moreno picked Dr. Willie Ong, a cardiologist and a political newcomer, as his running mate. Meanwhile, Bongbong Marcos wanted President Duterte to be his running mate but Duterte took himself out of the race for Vice President after his ratings plummeted. Bongbong’s second choice is Bong Go who already announced his vice presidential candidacy. There is no final word on a Bongbong-Bong Go tandem yet but people have started using “Bong in the third power” as a campaign slogan. So there you go! May the best man or woman win!

s of Tuesday morning October 12, 2021, Maring is now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility but storm signals are still up in several areas, according to the state weather bureau. The center of “Maring” is estimated to be 765 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan, and is headed towards China. The entire Luzon and Western Visayas will experience cloudy skies and rainy weather with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as Habagat, enhanced by severe tropical storm

“Maring,” the state weather bureau said. The rest of the country is expected to have fair weather with partly cloudy to cloudy skies, with chances of isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms. Thousands of families in four regions were affected, residents were from the Cagayan Valley, Mimaropa, and Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon, as well as in the Caraga Region in Mindanao. A total of 4,528 families in 122 barangays have been affected. Of this number, 728 families are staying inside evacuation centers, 1,216 families were pre-emptively evacuated in the regions of Ilocos, Eastern Visayas, Cagayan Valley, and Caraga. It said a total of 45 areas in the affected regions were inundated, adding that floodwaters in 17 localities have already subsided. “Deeply hoping” for Sara's substitution - BATO him, he'd rather not split the votes if Mayor Duterte will end up running for the national post. “Personally, I'd prefer if only one of us would run so that the votes won't be split. Still, I have to abide by whatever the party decides” he reiterated. He openly acknowledged his lack of leverage compared to other presidential aspirants like former Sen. Bongbong Marcos, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Sen. Ping Lacson, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, and Vice President Leni Robredo, as he himself was not included in the initial pollster surveys on preferred presidents. No problem with that, I will not surrender. I am here for

CNN Philippines, The Source on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, with Presidential aspirant Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa in his interview said is not affected by what others suspect of being a "placeholder" for reelectionist Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte in the 2022 polls, but he admitted, he is still hoping that the presidential daughter to change her mind and will end up being the candidate of PDP-Laban, chaired by her father, President Rodrigo Duterte. I have long been dreaming for her to run for president because her winnability is very high. I know her capability to lead this country. She can do it and If it were up to

one big fight, he said. PDP-Laban are already prepared to roll out the caravan for Dela Rosa, who will run in tandem with vice presidential aspirant Sen. Bong Go. They are so far sticking to their two bets and are preparing for other developments that might unfold until November 15, the deadline of substitution for political contenders in the 2022 polls.

he Padyakers Winnipeg Biking group was at it again for another weekend ride to Portage La Praire. The ride kicked off early Saturday morning from Winnipeg with a ride of about 6 hours roundrip. A day trip to Portage La Prairie in the fall was a perfect choice despite the foggy morning conditions. The route took the Padyakers through the beautiful rural countryside of Manitoba winding through small towns, farmland, rivers and bridges along the Trans-Canada Highway. For more road bike adventures, the Padyakers Winnipeg Biking group can be found on Facebook and Strava App. Happy Biking! Building a strong professional network to advance your career Recruiter's Life by Ron Cantiveros rcantiveros@aplin.com

N

etworking is a key to success in any industry, and it can't be overstated how important networking for professional purposes really is. The benefits of building a large network far outweigh the awkwardness of reaching out to strangers. Building a network is not only good for your professional development but also has an overall positive impact on society. As we have seen with job market volatility over the past 18 months and as you search or develop skills within any industry, it's important that one be connected in order to stay up to date on technology and career developments within your industry. Whether looking at your own career advancement goals or supporting someone else who wants more from their life than just working all day at someplace where they aren't happy anymore. Networks provide opportunities for people to make introductions (and sometimes referrals) which can result in finding new opportunities, especially those in the hidden job market. Tips for building your network Focus on your industry - By networking with those in your industry, you start to identify the thought leaders who have expansive networks and may provide career recommendations. They also post job opportunities on a regular basis so that they can share what it takes for success within their respective fields as well as tap into new markets by being introduced via referrals or introductions made through these individuals--which is how some jobs get posted at all! Network in-person - Networking with people in person is finally coming back with COVID19 gathering restrictions in place for the last 18 months. It’s the best way to build your professional network and develop strong friendships. Take advantage of these mixers, afterwork cocktail hours or fundraising events as an opportunity to network with individuals that you might not otherwise get an opportunity to meet. Local chambers of commerce, Meetup and Eventbrite groups are the perfect source to find upcoming local business networking events. Network online - The best way

to build your network is through LinkedIn, but don't forget other platforms and other communities. LinkedIn is a great place to establish your personal brand and depending on your industry, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube can easily serve as a gateway to building industry connections. Other online communities include Slack, Discord, Notion, Polywork, Reddit, Tribe, GitHub and a hundred others serving niche online global communities. Diversify - Seek out people with differing opinions and backgrounds. Not everyone takes the same path through their career, and that's what makes it so interesting! Working alongside someone who is going about things in a different way can help you tailor your own approach for success too- after all no two careers are alike right? Volunteer - Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and collaborate with like-minded professionals. It’s not too hard to find a local chapter of global professional organization such as Project Management Institute (PMI) and International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). Local non-profit and professional associations may also provide opportunities to connect with like-minded professionals who also volunteer for many of the same reasons. Aim to give, not take – Networking is no longer just about meeting people and handing out business cards. You should be focused on providing value to those you meet, so that they are more likely return the favor in future interactions. This doesn't mean that all of what goes into networking efforts has changed - after all these days it takes some knowhow for even a seasoned professional like yourself to draw conclusions from casual conversation! But now there's an added layer: returning good vibes back onto networks through identifying ways others might need help

goals that are important to you, and then building relationships that help lead to professional success. You don't need special tricks - just show up with an open mind and a smile. Happy Networking!

The Importance of Being Expressive Yet Respectful (In Friendships) Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim

F

riendship may be defined as "a relationship in which the persons involved are of like or similar minds where familiarity, trust, kindness, and compassion pervades. People in this kind relationship trust each other and help with their problems. They usually have similar interests. Trending now on social media, more so on Facebook, is the line, “I hope we still remain friends even though we have different beliefs and/or political leanings. Let’s just respect each other.” It’s campaign season once again here in the Philippines, especially for the presidential elections, on May 9, 2022. Seven months to go and the populus in general are getting hyped up as well as seemingly divided due to each other’s political leanings, notwithstanding each one’s religious beliefs and nonbelief thereof. Here are my four-top contenders for the presidential seat and a brief

description of their respective character. 1. A person who was bred in Politics and knows his platform of service by heart. 2. A former actor who rose from being a garbage collector to a life of public service. 3. A boxing champion who shifted from sports to politics. 4. The current Vice President who believes she can serve the country better in a higher position. Exciting as it may seem, and based on armchair experts, the current political rat race will definitely wedge a gap among supporters and would-be voters of each of the abovementioned candidates. In my opinion, having a few contenders is better than just two. But then again, two among the said four will surely emerge as the top candidates in the long run, when the counting draws to a close. *The Right to Choose* Everyone has the right to choose

their own political candidate. But in so doing, and among friends and relatives, relationships seem to be sacrificed given that the belief and/ or political leanings of one may be entirely different or even opposed to that of the other. Should this be really the result of one’s choice? Do friendships need to suffer because of this? From a societal perspective, people commonly clash on these top 3 concepts: Religion, Politics, and Gender Equality. Given these controversial topics, the ideas presented are usually formed based on culture and tradition, which will eventually lead to a specific choice and decision. This is under the premise that, based on the values that each promotes, they would have something to gain from the choice that they made. The clash only becomes predominant when between two people (or groups), one thinks that his choice is better than that of the other or that what he proposes is correct whereas the other's is wrong. Opinions matter. Remember that these are formed based on what a person knows, experienced, and believes in, which may be right or wrong. Only a test based on logic that produces a well-formed result

will determine the validity of a given opinion. If one feels strongly about a certain opinion, then the other should rationalize and so on. The main goal of the discussion, after all, is not to prove that one is correct but to introduce change. If at all each does not agree, then why not just agree to disagree? To arrive at a well-formed result based on logic, it will be good to practice the following: 1. Understand that different opinions exist. 2. Check your facts well. 3. Veer away from throwing invectives (name-calling). 4. No to Ad Hominem attacks (attack on the person’s character). Overall, attitude is everything. Treat others with respect as you would want yourself to be treated. There is no better way to promote peace than being amicable towards each

or the past couple of months, I've been mining the mountain of '60s Sunshine/Psychedelic music, and I continue to dig up gems that I might have just forgotten or really missed hearing about. After all, there are certainly an insurmountable number of great albums released in the decades of old, that deserve reintroduction to the current music community at large. Of the dozens of whose discographies I have been immersing myself in, there's this group that really caught my fancy--The Free Design, whose music is best characterized by its sunny Pop songs laced with light-jazzy instrumentation of acoustic guitar, piano, strings, horns, and woodwind; playful and tuneful vocal harmonies; and poetic lyrics. Formed in 1966, in New York, USA, The Free Design consisted primarily of chief songwriter Chris Dedrick and his brother Bruce and their sisters Sandy, Ellen, and Stefanie. The group released seven studio albums during their original run--from 1967's Kites Are Fun to 1972's There Is a Song--and the final one, 2001's Cosmic Peekaboo, when they reunited in 2000, only to retire most likely for good soon after. Recommended tracks are "The Proper Ornaments," "Umbrellas," "I Found Love," "Daniel Dolphin," "Now Is the Time," "Hurry Sundown," "Kije's Ouija," "Starlight," "Canada in Springtime," "Felt So Good," and "McCarran Airport."

other. Recognizing and understanding that, while each one’s interests and opinions differ, there will always be a certain amount of commonality that will draw people together. In the grand scheme of things, human beings--given each other’s differences, whether apparent or not--can be friends amidst the inanities of the world...as long as they can maintain a reasonable and respectable degree of respect and tolerance for each other. *Currently working at the Philippine International Convention Center, where she began services 22 years ago, Kathryn Valladolid Ebrahim is an alumna of St. Scholastica's College–Manila; she finished a degree in Bachelor of Arts, major in Sociology, at the University of Santó Tomás; drawing and writing are her primary avocations.

all is a great time to catch fish. With the colder temperatures, you can find a variety of different types of fish in Manitoba lakes and rivers. These include Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye, Large Mouth Bass and more! This year's fall fishing season is shaping up to be one for many of the FAAM members. Here are some of the photos from fishing adventures.

Huge congratulations to Shiloh Aranzanso who caught her first ever fish recently. A fat yellow perch on Lake Winnipeg.

FAAM Member Regan Aranzanso took a break from volunteer duties at the Kickerfish Greenback Classic to catch some fish from shore.
