Dismissed Mayor Alice Guo Cited for Contempt, Detained by House Panel

The House of Representatives quad committee cited former Bamban mayor Alice Guo in contempt on Thirsday, September 19 for allegedly misleading lawmakers about her escape from the Philippines. Guo, who was dismissed from office, claimed that no Filipino public official helped her leave the country,

attributing her escape to a foreigner. However, lawmakers found this hard to believe.

Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, the presiding officer, approved Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano’s motion to detain Guo at the House until the committee submits its final report, which could extend until the end of the 19th Congress.

Guo was apprehended in Indonesia earlier this month, despite the lack of Bureau of Immigration records, suggesting she left the Philippines through illegal means. Additionally, Guo refused to provide specific answers regarding her local farming business, raising further suspicion about her activities. Her alleged connections to the Fujian gang, a Chinese crime syndicate, were also discussed during the hearing. Lawmakers pressed for more information on the involvement of a former Philippine National Police chief in her escape, as hinted by Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. senior vice president Raul Villanueva. The investigation into these claims continues.

Over 40 POGOs to Cease Operations, Says DOJ

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that 41 licensed Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) have agreed to voluntarily shut down their operations. This follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s call to ban online gambling hubs in his State of the Nation Address in July, in response to criminal activities linked to these operations.

The DOJ revealed that visas issued to foreign POGO workers will be downgraded to tourist visas starting October 16, giving them 60 days to leave the country. Those who fail to comply will face involuntary repatriation.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin

Remulla emphasized the government's commitment to tackling illegal POGO activities, which he said pose risks to public safety and national security. He assured that the law will be enforced against those responsible for these "undesirable elements of society."

The DOJ’s "Task Force POGO Closure," composed of several government agencies, aims to establish guidelines for a total POGO ban by the end of the year while ensuring that the welfare of affected workers is not overlooked. The move follows reports of illegal activities involving torture, kidnapping, and human trafficking at POGO hubs.

New Questions Arise Over Sara Duterte’s Confidential Fund Spending

Vice President Sara Duterte faces renewed scrutiny over the use of confidential and intelligence funds (CIF) in her office, with lawmakers raising concerns about potential mismanagement. The Commission on Audit (COA) flagged portions of the Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) CIF spending in 2023.

During a House hearing on September 18, lawmakers noted a troubling pattern in Duterte’s use of confidential funds. 1-Rider partylist Rep. Ramon Rodrigo Gutierrez highlighted COA’s audit findings, which questioned the allocation of around ₱164 million out of the ₱375 million CIF spent by the OVP in

Health Advocate Willie Ong Reveals Sarcoma Cancer Diagnosis

Health advocate and cardiologist Dr. Willie Ong has announced that he is undergoing treatment for sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. In a video recorded from his hospital bed, Ong shared that doctors discovered a 16-centimeter tumor in his stomach, located behind his heart and in front of his spine. The diagnosis came after months of worsening symptoms, including severe back pain and difficulty breathing.

Ong, known for his health advocacy and large social media following, explained that his condition had worsened since October 2023, when he began experiencing persistent pain. By August 2024, the pain had become unbearable, leading to his hospitalization.

Despite the seriousness of his condition, Ong remains positive, expressing gratitude for the support

of his family, especially his wife Liza, who is also a doctor. He encouraged his followers to focus on spreading love and compassion, instead of being saddened by his situation.

Sarcoma, as described by the Cleveland Clinic, is a rare type of

Whistleblower Claims Quiboloy Gifted

Duterte and Officials with KOJC Women

Aformer member of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) has accused church leader Apollo Quiboloy of gifting women to former President Rodrigo Duterte and other officials. In an interview with dzRH, whistleblower Arlene Stone, a former KOJC worker, alleged that Quiboloy offered women from his church to powerful figures, including Duterte. Stone claimed that one of these women remains in Quiboloy's compound in Davao City.

Stone, now residing in the United States, urged the government to investigate the situation and called for more victims to come forward. She also revealed that KOJC members in the US were pressured to make monthly financial contributions ranging from $1,800 to $2,500, which she struggled to meet.

2023. Nueva Ecija Rep. Mikaela Angela Suansing corroborated this, pointing out irregularities in multiple quarters.

The OVP refrained from spending ₱125 million for the last quarter of 2023 after the House removed CIF allocations in the proposed 2024 budget. Gutierrez expressed concerns about the lack of transparency, noting that repeated, vague justifications raise suspicions of fund misuse.

Vice President Duterte defended herself, claiming that the inquiry was a politically motivated attack aimed at discrediting her for future elections. Lawmakers, however, stressed the need for accountability regarding public funds.

In response, Quiboloy’s legal team dismissed the allegations, calling Stone a "fake witness" and a "pathological liar." Former executive secretary Salvador Medialdea also rejected the claims, stating that Quiboloy was not a pimp.

Quiboloy is currently facing charges of human trafficking and sexual assault in the US, and efforts to extradite him are underway. Duterte has previously acknowledged his reputation as a womanizer but did not confirm Quiboloy's involvement.

New Yasuragi Display Now Open at The Leaf

The biomes at The Leaf reopened earlier this month after a scheduled closure during which the Babs Asper Display House was transformed with a serene new fall display.

Yasuragi: The Gardens of Japan, which runs from September 13 to November 17, presents a harmonious blend of nature, history, and artistry, featuring signature elements of traditional Japanese garden design. The word yasuragi translates to the

deep, calming breath of relaxation, a reflection of the display’s tranquil and soothing atmosphere.

“The Yasuragi display is a loving tribute to Japanese garden design, which is renowned around the world and celebrated for its artistry, minimalist philosophy, and stunning simplicity,” said Gerald Dieleman, Senior Director of Horticulture, Assiniboine Park Conservancy. “We are very excited about this display and look forward to sharing it with Leaf visitors.”

The Yasuragi display was designed in consultation with the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba and Bonsai Society of Winnipeg. Each detail – from the vibrant chrysanthemums to the contrasting green and red shades around the Torii gate – was carefully considered and thoughtfully incorporated into display.

At the centre of the display lies the Zen Garden, with its precisely placed boulders, sand, gravel, and rocks that mimic the patterns of

nature. A dry river is home to brass cranes that mirror the 1,000 delicate origami cranes suspended along the windows of The Leaf’s Grande Allée.

Programs, workshops, and other experiences offered at The Leaf through the run of the display will explore the art of ikebana, the teas of Japan, and other aspects of

Japanese culture. This includes a highly-anticipated foodie event on October 23 featuring Chef Edward Lam from Winnipeg’s Yujiro Japanese Restaurant.

The biomes at The Leaf are open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. More information about visiting The Leaf can be found at assiniboinepark.ca.

Manitoba Harvest Volunteers

Members of the Ukulele Filipino Club came together for a meaningful day of volunteering at Harvest Manitoba. With a shared spirit of giving back, the group helped sort and pack food items for needy families across the province. It was a rewarding experience that not

only strengthened their bonds as a community but also allowed them to make a positive impact on others. As they worked side by side, laughter and camaraderie filled the room, proving that small acts of kindness can go a long way in supporting those facing food insecurity in Manitoba.

Fostering a Growth Mindset in Your Kids: A Filipino Perspective

In Filipino culture, there’s a deep value placed on resilience or "tibay ng loob," which aligns perfectly with fostering a growth mindset. As parents, helping children embrace challenges and see mistakes as opportunities for learning is key to their success in school and beyond. Here’s how you can nurture this mindset while staying true to Filipino values.

1. Highlight the Value of Hard Work (Sipag at Tiyaga)

Filipino parents often emphasize the importance of hard work, or "sipag at tiyaga." Praise your child for their efforts, saying things like, “Ang sipag mo talaga! Proud ako sa'yo sa ginagawa mo!” By focusing on their dedication, you teach them that success comes through perseverance.

2. Embrace Failure as a Learning Tool

Mistakes are often seen as a stepping stone to success. Share stories of Filipino heroes or family members who overcame hardships through hard work and determination. This helps children understand that "hindi lahat nakukuha agad" (you don’t get everything instantly) and that learning takes time.

3. Be a Role Model of Growth

Filipino families tend to have closeknit ties, and children often look up to their parents and elders. Share your own experiences of learning something new, and emphasize the process of continuous improvement. Whether it’s mastering a new recipe or taking up a new skill, your growth journey can inspire them.

4. Set Family-Oriented Learning Goals

Encourage children to set learning goals that align with family values, like working hard to help the family, studying for a better future, or mastering skills that could contribute to the community. For example, you can say, “Galingan mo sa pag-aaral para makatulong sa pamilya.”

5. Use Filipino Proverbs Filipino culture is rich with proverbs that can teach growth mindset principles. Use phrases like, "Pag may tiyaga, may nilaga" (With hard work, comes reward), to remind your children that success is earned through effort.

Our Minnesota Family Adventure: Fun for the Kids and

Our family trips to Minnesota are always full of excitement, but this time, we went all out with activities for the kids that had something special in store for everyone, including me—the big kid! From thrill rides at Nickelodeon Universe to some serious shopping at Mall of America, this trip was packed with fun, laughter, and, of course, a delicious surprise for the grown-ups.

The heart of our trip was Nickelodeon Universe, the ultimate indoor amusement park tucked inside the Mall of America. With rides featuring beloved characters from SpongeBob and Paw Patrol, our kids were in their element. The Unlimited Rides pass was great too! The park had something for everyone, from roller coasters that made the older ones squeal with delight to gentler, toddler-friendly rides that kept the younger ones grinning from ear to ear. The best part? We didn’t have to worry about the weather, and the whole family had a blast exploring the park's endless rides and attractions.

As luck would have it, the Play Nintendo Tour was at Mall of America over the long weekend. This national tour brought the world of Nintendo to life with character meet-and-greets, interactive activities, and playable demos of the latest Nintendo Switch games. The kids were thrilled to see familiar faces like Mario, Princess Peach, and

Pikachu. They even got to show off their racing skills in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe! It was a hit with both kids and parents, and definitely a highlight of our trip.

Finally! The highlight of the trip, at least for me, was the muchanticipated dinner at Fogo de Chão in downtown Minneapolis. After a

Brazilian BBQ for the Big

Kid

day of thrilling rides and gaming fun, I was ready for something indulgent, and Fogo de Chão did not disappoint. The Brazilian BBQ, or churrasco, was a feast for the senses. The servers brought an endless selection of perfectly grilled meats—beef, chicken, lamb, and

James Reid Reveals Why Liza Soberano Left Careless Music

James Reid, CEO of Careless Music, has confirmed that Liza Soberano decided to part ways with the talent agency to pursue a different career path. According to a report by ABS-CBN News, Reid explained that Soberano’s decision stemmed from her desire to focus on a Hollywood career.

"It was her decision. All contracts with my artists have a termination for convenience, and I agreed to it," Reid said, addressing rumors about Soberano’s departure.

Reid noted that while Careless Music primarily focuses on artists’ careers in the Philippines, Soberano

pork—straight to our table. With each bite, I was reminded why this style of dining is an experience in itself. The kids had fun too, especially when they realized they could try different meats as much as they liked.

For me, it was a dream come

true. The savory flavors, the rich variety, and the festive atmosphere were the perfect way to end our action-packed family day. It was a reminder that while the kids might rule the day, there’s always room for a little grown-up indulgence!

From the excitement at

Nickelodeon Universe to the interactive fun of the Play Nintendo Tour and the delicious finale at Fogo de Chão, this family trip to Minnesota had something for everyone. Whether you’re a kid or just a kid at heart, there’s no better place to make memories than in the Twin Cities.

is shifting her efforts toward the U.S. entertainment industry. "She’s more focused on her U.S. career and Hollywood, while we are more focused on the Philippines," he explained.

He also shared that while Careless Music initially helped Soberano with introductions to her U.S. co-management and her first film, her career trajectory has since been independently driven.

The official confirmation puts to rest rumors surrounding Soberano’s status with Careless Music, clarifying the amicable separation.
