OH MY GULAY

The inaugural Upo Festival presented by 204 Filipino Forum and Marketplace was a huge success with amazing entries by backyard gardeners growing the longest and heaviest upo (bottle gourd). Brix del Carme walked away with the bragging rights for the longest upo measuring 1.867m (74in).The festival also highlighted many homebound green thumbs turning to backyard gardening in the midst of a global pandemic. Upo is a popular vegetable in Filipino cuisine and normally sauteed with ground beef to make ginisang upo. Photo by Rhodel Climacosa

In Anxious Anticipation of the First Fall of Snow The clouds today look like humpback whales And cold is the kiss of the northern gales The same well-trodden path is gold with leaves But no movement in sight the thick mist grieves Bits of feathery white are now falling The script for a summer's play is missing Is there really something invincible In the heart of the weakly and feeble? Stark visions of a world left in rubbles Of humans wallowing in their troubles Standing on stools with ropes around their necks Sailors jumping from the ghastly ship decks Lightning and thunder comfort the weary Only in a gods-forsaken country! Pinay student won P20M in an Sara Duterte backs father's International Science Competition 2022 VP bid

A

Grade 12 Pinay student Hillary Diane Andales from Tacloban Leyte, was the grand prize winner in Breakthrough Junior Challenge, an international science competition. Among the 11,000 competitors all over the world in 178 countries who joined, she bagged the 1st prize and brought home P20M including the reward of her teacher and school, and was granted a scholarship. The goal of the competition is to award intelligent students who can explain in layman's terms the complicated things in science. In her entry "Relativity and the Equivalence of Reference Frames", she explained in her creative and simple way the Theory of Relativity with the help of a cell phone and pick-up truck. This young Pinay student together with her family was one of the Yolanda survivors, it was remembered that the storm wreaked havoc on her hometown in which lots of people lost their jobs, houses, and even the lives of their loved ones. They had to run up to their double-deck bed because they didn't have a second floor and her dad punched the ceiling and held on to the steel trusses

of the roof and stayed there for 7 hours until the storm surge subsided, she elaborated. Even after the great struggle against fate the people in Tacloban Leyte, never backed down from the challenges of life and this young Pinay continued to fight.

She said they both agreed that only one of them will run for a national position. apan’s Foreign Ministry on Monday, September 13, 2021, warned its citizens of “increased risks such as suicide bombings” in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar. It urged its citizens in these countries to stay away from crowds and religious facilities. Other countries mentioned seemed to have no knowledge of the potential threat. The threat level in the Philippines based on the military’s latest review was “moderate.” said AFP spokesperson Col. Ramon Zagala. On Tuesday, September 14, 2021, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said it has no report on terror threats in the Philippines related to warnings of possible attacks on some Southeast Asian countries. In a statement, Zagala added that as of now, they have not received any report and are constantly validating all reports on security matters and it is a continuous process.

Quo vadis, Bongbong Marcos? PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

W

ith the election only nine months away, the Philippines’ political merry-go-round is spinning in circles. You don’t know who’s with whom or who is running against. It’s dynamic especially when family members are actively positioning themselves for president or vice president. Honestly, it’s too soon to speculate who would be pairing as presidential and vice presidential running mates. But the strange thing is that in Philippine elections, the presidential and vice presidential teammates don’t have to win as a team. The presidential candidate can win while his or her vice presidential teammate could lose. In other words, it’s free for all or “labo-labo” as they call it or “matira ang matibay” – survival of the fittest – which is the case with so many candidates running for the same position. Looking at the presidential wannabes, the most prominent presidentiable is Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. But Bongbong has been non-committal with his “I’m keeping my options open” remark when asked the question. But everybody seems to agree that he will eventually declare his candidacy by October 8, 2021, the last day for filing a certificate of candidacy. The question is: What would he be running for – president or vice president? Two things that would determine what he’s going to run for are his age and his mother’s age. Bongbong will be 64 on September 13 and his mother Imelda Marcos is already 92. It’s always been her wish to see Bongbong follow the footsteps of his father. He’ll be 70 years old by then and Imelda would be 98. She’d be too old to enjoy her dream of seeing Bongbong become president; that is, if she’s still alive by then. Bongbong can’t wait for 2028. He has to run and win in 2022. And it will be for president. No ifs or buts. But what about Sara DuterteCarpio? Is she running for president? Bongbong’s sister Imee Marcos has been lobbying for her brother to run as Sara’s vice president. She describes it as a political marriage “made in heaven,” between the Solid South and the Solid North. But why would Bongbong settle for vice president when he can be the president? Hasn’t Bongbong thought that he’s expendable to the Duterte family’s quest for dynastic political power? If Sara had to run it would be for president. And to add more power to her candidacy, she’d pick her dad over Bongbong as her running mate. That’s where the calculus is: Duterte-Duterte

tandem. The old man Duterte believes that he’d win the vice presidency hands down. But Sara had made it known that if her dad will run for vice president; she doesn’t want to be president. So there you go: there would be no Duterte-Duterte tandem. So where does Bongbong fit in this jigsaw puzzle? Just leave him to wither in retirement? Unthinkable. Mama Imelda would die of heart attack if he gets out of the presidential derby. Heck he’s got tons of moolah to buy the presidency. Perhaps, the question should be: Does Sara need Bongbong to win? Would it be fair to speculate that she can win the presidency with or without Bongbong? At 43 years of age, she has the mental and physical capacity to run a rigorous campaign. She’s been preparing for it. She can pick Sen. Bong Go as her vice presidential running mate, who’s been dying to get a shot at the vice presidency or even the presidency. But like everybody else, he’s keeping his cards close to his chest. But everybody knows he’s positioning himself close to the top. He’s always standing behind President Duterte, ready at his beck and call. Last August 24, President Duterte announced at his weekly TV show his intention to run for vice president with Bong Go as presidential standard-bearer. However, he later said that if his daughter Sara runs for president, he would drop the idea of running for vice president. That doesn’t seem right. The only reason why Duterte would run for vice president is to enjoy immunity from the International Criminal Court (ICC) that has been going after him for allegations of crimes against humanity. He strongly believes that the vice presidency would shield him from prosecution by the ICC. According to Sara, her father gave her two options: one asking her to endorse the Go-Sara Duterte tandem and the other is to take in Go as her VP if she runs for president. Now, if this is going to

happen, there would be a problem with the pairing of Bongbong and Sara, who said she’s willing to run as Bongbong’s running mate. And if Duterte insists on running as vice president, Sara will not run. She’ll give way to her dad. That would leave a Bongbong-Duterte (the father) tandem. Go will be out of the equation. But that would be okay with him. He doesn’t have any ambition anyway. He’s running because Duterte wants him to. Lately, rumor has it that Imee Marcos wanted to run for vice president. That’s according to President Duterte who revealed that Imee is courting Sara to form a possible tandem in 2022. Duterte said Imee is going to Davao City to persuade Sara to seek the presidency and be her vice presidential running mate. However, President Duterte claimed that Marcos’s plan to team up with Sara in the 2022 national elections would not thrive because his daughter is not interested in joining the presidential race, which nobody believes. Now if Sara is going to run for president, what would President

QPAM Sari Sari Store QPAM Presents a Traditional icon in the Philippines ….. SARI SARI STORE As you walk through the streets in the Philippines you will often come across a Sari Sari Store. Sari Sari means variety or everything. It is a family run business usually managed by the mother of the house with the sole purpose of augmenting the income of the family. The store usually carries the basic goods such as canned goods, rice, noodles, condiments, Vegetables, candies etc. even household cleaning materials, basic medicines and alcoholic beverages. The best thing about

the sari sari store is that you can buy commodities in small quantities or what we called “tingi”. These stores are big part of the Filipino community since they are often attached to the front of the owner’s house. The store also serves as gathering place for the community, a place where we can take breaks, listen to stories and catch up with the latest news and gossips.

Winnipeg Centre A voice for our Community It has been 17 years since we had Filipino representation in Parliament and I’m running to change that. When the pandemic took over every corner of our community, the Liberal government stood by Canadians. From supporting individuals, families, small businesses and industry, we had Canadians’ back and swiftly delivered COVID-19 relief funding to Canadians who needed it most. It is now time to finish the fight we started 18 months ago and build the country we have always envisioned. As a Filipino-Canadian school teacher, vice-principal and youth advocate, I’m running to serve the community in a more impactful capacity, as your federal Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre. Your vote means a voice at the decision-making table, and greater influence on local investments in childcare, mental health and affordable housing. We need to move forward on reconciliation, provide better care for seniors and strengthen our healthcare system. Only a re-elected Liberal government can achieve those goals. On September 20th, the future of Winnipeg Centre relies on your vote. Now is the time to move forward and build on the achievements we have made in the last 6 years. The choice you make will determine whether the Filipino community has a progressive voice in government or in opposition.

Meanwhile, makeup artist Robbie Pinera said, Soberano’s skin was meant to appear “raw and uncovered”. Fittingly, dubbed as the “girl on fire” in the feature, which touches on the actress’ transformation over her decade-long career in showbiz. Soberano said, “she is honored to be part of L’Officiel’s 100th anniversary as its September cover star, and what a dream it was working on this at such a beautiful location with such a creative and talented team!”.

When Death Becomes Our Light (On the Demise of Friends and Family)

deaths in a row: an aunt (2018), her brother (2019), and my dad (2021); but yes, we dealt with those individually and independently. We each had our own ways of coping, but only saw the strength of each one on the outside. Friends, relatives, and acquaintances poured in their commiserations and compassion towards our family in all ways possible. A friend of mine, after recently losing her partner for sixteen or so years, is having a very tough time. Because she has been living in her lonesome for quite a while, she always resorts to social media as the sounding board of her emotions, hoping someone would come along to interact and validate her thoughts; maybe answer the questions looming in her head. She copes by sharing photos of her loved one and memories that are attached to them. She expresses her inner feelings in ways no one has known about her before. That being said, and although it may be an arduous task, to allow oneself to grieve is the best therapy. Going through the process of grief is a major step for a person to move on. People grieve in different ways and for a myriad of reasons. Coping for the loss of a loved one (pets included) involves a lot of patience. Let yourself heal at a pace through which your own mind and body is capable of. Moving on doesn’t necessarily mean that one has forgotten the memories. Memories, once they are created, form part of a person. We become who we are because

hen I think of death-and of late the idea has come with alarming frequency--I seem at peace with the thought that the day when I will no longer be among the living in this valley of strange humors will dawn. I can accept the reality of my own demise but not that of anyone else. To let a friend or relative go into the country of no return I find impossible. Disbelief becomes my close companion, and anger follows in its wake. I answer the heroic question: "Death, where is thy sting? With it is here in my heart and mind and memories."--Maya Angelou Sympathies are in order for those people whose friends and loved ones have departed. As far as Facebook is concerned and among my list of friends, notifications of the change of profile picture into candles and/ or a plain shade of black have been the common mode. These deaths are not attributed to COVID alone. For many, as it symbolizes the demise of a person, the mere sight of it could be really a depressing scene. For some, even as an outsider, it could be easy to share in another person’s sorrow. Death, on the part of those

who have been left behind, evokes profound emotional reactions that may or may not be transparent towards others. No one knows the extent of a person’s pain or suffering. Even when one is seen to be bawling, it does not explain the exact emotion that goes through a person’s mind. It could just be the tip of the mourning iceberg. There are those who could express their thoughts freely, but there are some who

would rather keep such feelings to themselves. I have experienced losing relatives, so I could say that I identify with the latter. But when triggered, I would feel emotional shudders and shed a tear or two. Our family saw through three recent

Grief is love with no place to go. It is love that one cannot give away. It is the feeling that wells up inside and fills the void. We gain back our strength and willpower when we decide to move forward to make a change in ourselves. I know many people would agree that expressing sympathies and commiserations may be a good gesture in consoling a grieving person, but finding the right words is utterly difficult. Just remember that the goal is to share the sorrow of a grieving person and not to impose on them on how they should feel. Patience and kindness extended will mean the most.

Introducing The Tuneful Trolley

T

(Sunshine Pop #5)

he '80s phase of New Wave music is steeped with bands with a mouthful of creative names such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Echo & the Bunnymen, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Men Without Hats, and Pet Shop Boys, to name just a few. While this might seem revolutionary at the time and for the uninitiated, this style of naming was no longer new even in the '70s nor the '80s. The previous decade's Psychedelic/Sunshine Pop realm, for its part, was already teeming with even more colorful monikers--The Peppermint Trolley Company, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Sunshine Company, and The Tuneful Trolley. The Tuneful Trolley was among the short-lived groups that made the late '60s brilliant and bright. Unfortunately, it got to release only one yet beautiful album that deserves reintroducing to enthusiasts of not only New Wave but also any melodic and arty kind of Pop. What best characterizes the music of The Tuneful Trolley are the catchy melodies reminiscent of the Psychedelic phase of The Beatles, the Bubblegum harmonies of The Beach Boys, and the band's very own style of playful, sunny sensibilities. After all, the trolley boys wrote most of their songs. Founded in 1967, in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, United States, The Tuneful Trolley consisted of Antonio Bordonaro (guitar, vocals), Brian Parks (bass, vocals), Jack Riolo (drums, vocals), Joey DeSane (vocals), Paul Conocenti (organ, piano, vocals), and Santo Ciccarello (guitar, vocals). In the year that followed, the young band released what became its only album, Island in the Sky. Soon afterwards, The Tuneful Trolley disbanded. Recommended tracks are "Sunny Days," "Lovely Day," "My Apple Pie," and "Uncle Joe's Armada."
