Is it June yet? I s it June yet? As we see the Winnipeg Jets miss the playoffs for the third straight year, I am eagerly waiting for the 2014 CFL season to start and June can't come fast enough. Until then, I'll be glued to the TV (or tablet) watching NHL and NBA playoff

games. I'm extremely happy to see that the Toronto Raptors clinched the Atlantic Division title and really hope they are still in the hunt when I go to Toronto in May. Could you imagine that? The Toronto Raptors in the NBA Finals?
My "Is it June yet?" question refers to my desire for the CFL season to start now. The Blue Bombers are currently in Florida kicking off a three-day minicamp so I'm getting my fix. It was also recently announced that the 103rd Grey Cup will be coming to Winnipeg in 2015 so I'm also excited for the huge potential for a month long party in Winnipeg next November. Until then, we have quite a lot of sports happening in Winnipeg and also sports developments with the Filipino Journal that I'm excited to announce soon. There's Canada's Women's National Team playing a friendly against the USA next month at Investors Group Field. Lots of sports happening in our community.
Raptors claim Atlantic Division title and head into the NBA Playoffs.

Eight Canadian writers will read excerpts at the book launching of "Water: Reflections on Thirst, Thanks and Truth" at McNally Robinson "Spring is the season for the release of stories locked up in the ice crystals floating in the air." An introduction written by Marjorie Anderson, writer, mentor and teacher, to highlight the collaborative effort of eight Canadian writers who will read and sign the book during the launching on April 22, Tuesday, 7 p.m. at the Atrium of McNally Robinson Bookseller at Grant Ave. And Majorie A n d e r s o n continues: "My father's image of air saturated with narratives has stayed with me throughout the years and occasionally resurfaces, as it did in November 2013 when I had the privilege of working with a group of intrepid writers enrolled in my first-ever Writing for Anthology course. The air in the classroom was thick with potential - eight inventive minds, each intent on releasing stories held within, and all brimming with the unique energy that comes with collaborative writing."

The eight Canadian writers selected "water" as the theme of their anthology. And the group minted "Writers Unblocked" as their bond of creativity. And the stories unfolded and the collection contains a wide range in focus and tone: from seriously dramatic (Black Island, Thirst), to personally poignant (Faces With Soft Edges, Safe Harbour, Watercolour), to philosophical (A Little Garden, Acceptance), to humorous (A Water Fantasy). The eight writers who will read and sign at the book launching include Rod Cantiveros, Eleanor Chornoboy, Nancy Clendenan, Kathy French, Barbara King, Les Rankin, Linda Romanetz andf Rosalea Young. Cover design by Filipino Journal. The book is cherishly dedicated to Marjorie Anderson, writer, mentor and teacher. Strictly by invitation only. Coffee, tea and cookies are provided.

Packed 4 Da Laffs Pokwang, K Brosas, Pooh and Chokoleit were treated to a packed house as they stopped into Winnipeg on their North American "4 Da Laffs" tour. The comedy quartet left the 1,200 crowd in stitches with their 2.5 hour comedy sketches. It was a laugh trip from the moment they landed in Winnipeg, as the 4 Da Laffs entourage was greeted by fans and paparazzi hoping to score photos with the famous
comedians. Videos from the show producers Katya and Todd Labelle popped up on Facebook during the Pacquaio-Bradley fight on Saturday night where Pokwang impersonated Manny Pacquioa's mom, Dionisia Pacquiao. Other highlights from the comedy show included an audition for ABS-CBN's drama Dyesebel where all four comedians crawled on the stage dressed up as mermaids. Pooh brought his
Manny Pacquiao character to the Pantages stage with a mashup song with Pacquiao-Bradley and Mamma Dionisia references from the April 12th fight in Las Vegas. The 4 Da Laffs show in Winnipeg was produced by Todd and Katya Labelle of Todd Labelle Promotions, along with event production services by MYXZ iMAGES Photography & Events Concepts.

An evening with Philippine Tourism
T
he Philippine Roadshow to Canada stopped into Winnipeg on April 3 and hosted an “Evening with Philippine Tourism” at the Fort Garry Hotel. The Canadian roadshow was organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Tourism Promotions Board Philippines (TPB PHL). The roadshow briefings in Winnipeg highlighted the best that Philippine tourism has to offer through product presentations and business to business (B2B) networking sessions between the Philippine and Canada travel trade. Canada’s tour consolidators and travel agents with Philippine program, mainstream and ethnic Filipino media and Filipino community leaders, associations and organizations as well as the tourism consumers in the areas to be visited are the target audience. “With this initial roadshow, the Tourism Promotions Board
is poised to meet, establish and renew linkages with the Canadian outbound travel industry partners and generate marketing leads to further its goals in the market place. We shall be presenting exciting updates on Philippine tourism developments and tourist destinations,” reveals Domingo Ramon Enerio III, TPB PHL’s Chief Operating Officer. “The country’s brand in tourism shall be rolled out through a specially prepared cultural entertainment performance and distribution of communication materials. The support and commitment of the Fil-Can communities will also be solicited particularly for their participation to the Pinoy Homecoming Program and the highly successful Winter Tour Escapade. In this way, we can catalyse new and more tourism business and visitor arrivals to the Philippines, COO Enerio adds.
Roadshow delegation list included the following represenatives and companies: Susan Del Mundo, Tourism Promotions Board Philippines of PDOT; Joselito V. Gregorio, Tourism Promotions Board Philippines of PDOT; Sec. Jose
Mari Ponce, Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA); Blessida G. Diwa , Department of Tourism - Region Office II; Catherine Agustin, Department of Tourism - National Capital Region; Jing Paje, Department of Tourism -

The exhibitors were gratified by the massive turnout at the OTVS which put together this year over 200 travel and vacation exhibits representing over 50 countries for some 16,000 Canadian visitors planning vacations overseas. The OTVS validates Canada’s huge outbound tourism market as participating Philippine tour operators have realized. I am pleased by TPB’s initiative to assemble Philippine sellers for this show,” Ambassador Gatan stated. he Philippine Embassy in Ottawa reported to the Department that, for the fourth year running, the Philippines made its presence felt at the Celebration of Cultures organized by Algonquin College in Ottawa on 4 April 2014. The Philippines was among 20 countries that participated in the international festival showcasing Canada’s rich cultural diversity, including the Netherlands, U.S. Turkey, Poland, China, Japan, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Kuwait, Iraq, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Zambia, Honduras, UAE, Ecuador and Guatemala. The Philippine Embassy exhibit, made colorful by an It’s More Fun in the Philippines (IMFIT PH) theme and enhanced by shell craft and baskets from Iloilo as well as snacks from the Philippines, was a popular draw for the students who flocked to the festival. The Algonquin Times, purportedly the best campus newspaper in Ontario, interviewed Minister and Consul Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo who seized the opportunity to create awareness not only of Philippine tourist destinations but also popular Philippine export products to Canada such as home décor and ethnic food. “For this market segment, Filipino food is key to engaging passive onlookers in an active conversation on the Philippines,” Ambassador Gatan suggested. “The Embassy takes part in Algonquin’s Celebration of Cultures every year, cognizant of the openness of the Canadian youth to experienceexotic cultures and explore foreign countries, especially the Philippines because of our extensive people-to-people links,” he added.

The solons said Henares

This will also avoid speculations that the Mindanao solon is being made part of the revenue agency’s shame campaign against suspected tax evaders. Magdalo party-list Rep.
Gary Alejano said the BIR should keep the tax issue away from the public. Reps. Roy Seneres (OFW Family Partylist) and Terry Ridon (Kabataan Partylist) for their part said that that Pacquiao and his accountants should be given enough time to submit his income records and settle the tax due the government. Ridon further advised Henares against placing Pacquiao in her “shame campaign” list. Seneres added that Henares should realize that Pacquiao’s served as an inspiration for the victims of calamities for them to “rise again” despite the odds. Pacquiao settles for UD revenge sans KO Manny Pacquiao has to settle to an action-packed unanimousdecision victory when he failed to stop Timothy Bradley with quick combinations during their WBO welterweight title Saturday, April 12, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a matter of 12 rounds, Pacquiao has gone from a man many doubted could still produce on a world-class level to a man who reestablished himself as one of the two best fighters in the world. Saying he didn’t want to get careless, the older Pacquiao showed his hands and footwork skills are still deadly, but the eight-division world champion’s power and timing weren’t good
enough Even Freddie Roach admitted that his ward was a little bit slower now. For his part, Bradley believed that his opponent’s punching power was harder in their first fight. He was gracious in defeat though, saying he lost to one of the best fighters in the world. He also praised Freddie Roach and his whole team for their fight strategy, Pacquiao’s mostly likely ext bout is a fifth meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez, who fights Mike Alvarado on May 17. Boxing observers however said that Pacquiao's win over Bradley has restored some relevance to a potential superfight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Canadians gave generously! $85million toward Typhoon Haiyan federal matching fund Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that Canadians gave with their hearts during the international appeal for Typhoon Haiyan relief last fall. Over $85 million in donations received by Canadian registered charities was received during the November 9 to December 23 matching period. As promised by the Government of Canada, it is committed to matching every eligible dollar donated by Canadians towards relief and reconstruction efforts in the Philippines. Quick Facts •On November 10, 2013, Canada established the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund, through which every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians from November 9 to December 23, 2013 to registered Canadian charities would be matched by the Government of Canada. •Thousands of individual Canadians from across the country contributed to registered Canadian charitable organizations to provide assistance in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. Over $85 million of these contributions were eligible for matching under the Government’s Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. The end result will be more resources - through combined funding from the Government of Canada and Canadian charitable
organizations - being provided to typhoon-affected people in the Philippines . •From the very beginning, Canada has played a leading role in the global response to the impact of the typhoon that hit the Philippines on November 8, 2013, by providing significant humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of the people affected by the typhoon. •Canada has sent relief supplies like tents, blankets, water purification tablets, shelter kits, and other essential items from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada’s emergency stockpile. •With support from the Government of Canada, the
Canadian Red Cross Society deployed a medical team and field hospital to provide emergency health support in the Philippines . •Elements of the Canadian Armed Forces’ Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) were also deployed to support relief efforts by providing clean water, medical assistance and logistical support, including addressing pressing needs on Panay Island . Canada ’s current longer-term development assistance program in the Philippines supports initiatives focused on enhancing sustainable economic growth by improving the enabling environment for investment and building economic opportunities for the poor.

Ambassador Gatan Launches First Summit of Young Filipino-Canadian Leaders
Participants pose with Senator Enverga, Mayor Mabilog and Consul General Mahilum-West
Amb. Gatan opens the Summit
Upon the initiative of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, young leaders and mentors from Filipino communities across Canada gathered at the St. Michael’s College School in Toronto on 8 March 2014 for
the first Young Filipino-Canadian Leaders’ Summit. Convenor iKubo Media partnered with, TPF Canada and Eskwela Inc. in putting together the day-long event for nearly 100 youth delegates aged 18 to 35 from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Windsor, Hamilton, and Edmonton. The carefullyplanned program covered lively conversations around the theme “Understanding the FilipinoCanadian Identity – the Key to Transformational Leadership.” In his welcome address, Philippine Ambassador Leslie B. Gatan stated that the Summit was the fulfillment of a two-year old dream of the Embassy to launch a continuing process of nurturing the Filipino community’s young to be productive and to excel in their respective fields as their success redounds to the benefit of both Canada and the Philippines. He counselled the participants on the immense brain power of the youth to resolve complex problems while exhorting them to

Dr. Anton Juan, who taught at the University of the Philippines for over 30 years and is currently a tenured professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, traced Philippine cultural history from the pre-Spanish to the post-colonial period as it relates to transformational leadership. He pointed to culture as comprising the aspirations of a people and the portal from which leadership originates. Professor Juan cited language as the determinant of the physicality of a nation withoutwhich the will of a people cannot be expressed. He summarized his lecture in three constructs: memory, will

and action which refer to culture, a point of view and a “becoming”. Professor Roland Coloma of the University of Toronto began his presentation with a personal narrative spanning his experiences as a Philippineborn, U.S.-educated Canadian academic. He posited that the “invisibility” of Filipinos as an ethnic minority in Canada could be addressed by a paradigm shift with Canada, instead of the Philippines, as the main frame of reference. He saw three major issues confronting Filipinos in Canada, to wit: a) the economic or the deprofessionalization and deskilling of Filipinos workers as well as their lack of economic clout; b) the political which refers to the absence of a strong voice in mainstream society; and

c) the social which pertains to Filipinos being part of racialized groups with parallel and shared experiences. Professor Coloma saw the need to harness “leaders already in the trenches” and to build strong coalitions as the initial steps to change the status quo. From Filipino cultural history and contributing factors to the invisibility of the FilipinoCanadian, the forum transitioned seamlessly to the presentation by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog of Iloilo City where he gave participants the key to their next portal, namely, transformation leadership. His philosophy and experiences as mayor of Iloilo inspired the participants to consider an effective template for good governance which entailed stakeholders taking ownership of goal-oriented actions to fulfill the community’s aspirations. During the open mic, Mayor Mabilog led the panel of youth leaders who shared their experiences and challenges in their chosen fields and respective communities, namely, Atty Rafael Fabregas (Liberal Party MP canadidate), Vincent Villanis (CEO of Ontario Bamboo beer in Hamilton), Mithi Esguerra (community organizer, educator, activist in Toronto), Thomas Ancheta (President, Edmonton Filipino Youth Association) and Veraida-Lyn Bermejo (President, Pamana ng Luzviminda Philippine Folkloric Dance Company). The Honorable Tobias Enverga, Jr., the first and only Filipino-Canadian appointed to the Senate of Canada, closed the forum with an inspirational speech. “I trust that the seeds of change we sowed at this forum will yield a dynamic nationwide youth movement leading Filipino-Canadians to contribute more significantly, and perhaps more visibly, to their communities,” Ambassador Gatan declared.

QPAM's Q-FUN is spelled S U C C E S S! Quezon Province Association of Manitoba's Q-FUN is a successful sport event with a combination of strikes, spare and canals! Some bowlers hit the pins with strikes, and some with spares! And some, probably first time bowlers who love to roll the ball hit the canal. No problem, it it is fun to see the balls roll into the platform into the canal. The 1st ever bowling tournament sponsored by QPAM became a major sport event this year. "I am so happy that we did give our participants a great day to enjoy this 1st QPAM bowling tournament. Thanks to the teams
and to our sponsors and to our volunteers for their support and commitment. This Q-FUN would not be successful without your help." Maggie Chan-Urbano, president of QPAM, said. The 1st Q-FUN Bowling winners include: Bowlero Team, 1st prize; while Sarbit Team and Team Ba won the 2nd and the 3rd prizes respectively. Individual awards were given to John Aguilar, best 25 points; best costume, Kulit's Team; early bird, Tuxedo Team; Best Canal player, Leah Enverga-Magsino; best spare, Jon Reyes; highest score,
Nelson Celones; youngest bowler, Hannielle Chan-Urbano; and the "opposite of youngest bowler title", Mannie Aquino. The sponsors were Buhler Versatile Inc, Coast to Coast Mortgage (Lito Lorenzana), Cole International, Filipino Journal, Jut In Couture, Sarbit Travel and Insurance, UPS (Jon Reyes). It is really a full of fun to be with QPAM and it will more fun, if you will join their next year's Q-FUN Bowling Tournament! Strikes, spare or canal do not matter, your presence is what matters most!

The Music Never Really Ends
I
by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
n previous issues, I have cited my favorite albums released respectively in the 1960s (the likes of The Cascades’ ‘Rhythm of the Rain,’ The Byrds’ ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’, and The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band’) and the 1970s (which include Bread’s ‘Guitar Man,’ America’s ‘Holiday,’ and John Denver’s ‘Back Home Again’). Now, I am listing my top 13 albums of the 1980s. My having discovered as early as the late ’70s to the early ’80s bands like Blondie (“Heart of Glass”), The Cars (“My Best Friend’s Girl”), The B-52s (“Planet Claire”), The Knack (“My Sharona”), and The Pretenders (“Brass in Pocket”) has drawn me to the sound that came to be known as New Wave. This is the primary reason my top favorite albums released in the 1980s all fall under the genre New Wave. But this does not mean that I listened only to this kind of music. I was actually listening already to a wide array of music even in the 1970s and the 1980s, but New Wave just happened to become my favorite genre of music. Many non–New Wave releases in that decade that I
also love just got shortlisted—like John Lennon’s ‘Double Fantasy’ (1980), Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ (1982), Air Supply’s ‘Now and Forever’ (1982), Madonna’s self-titled debut album (1983), and Menudo’s ‘Reaching Out’ (1984). To my perspective and personal experience, the 1980s may be regarded as the decade when the union of music and
(On My Recommended Albums through the Decades) Part Three: 1980s fashion became fully realized not only visually but also sonically. Many New Wave albums produced in this decade are seeming patchworks of Picasso pieces—colorful, angular, a bit progressive, but not too abstract or complicated when compared to the Art Rock and Baroque Pop of the 1960s and the ensuing Progressive Rock of the 1970s. Here are my Top 13 favorite
albums released in the 1980s. Siouxsie & the Banshees Kaleidoscope (1980) Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward (1984) Fiction Factory - Throw the Warped Wheel Out (1984) The Lotus Eaters - No Sense of Sin (1984) Modern English - Ricochet Days (1984) Spandau Ballet Parade (1984)

Not Money (1985) Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair (1985) Echo & the Bunnymen - Echo & the Bunnymen (1987) U2 - The Joshua Tree (1987) The Wild Swans - Bringing Home the Ashes (1988) Final Note Considering the decades’ worth of albums from various genres that I enjoy listening to, many of the New Wave albums released in the 1980s remain to be regulars on my playlist. Yes, there may be new albums released by both classic New Wave bands and younger New Wave bands, but still I find more pleasure in listening to albums that I discovered in my teenage years primarily because they carry for me not only music but also memories of my very young years. For instance, just the introductory drum roll of “In Between Days” by The Cure or the bombastic intro of Big Country’s “In the Big Country” or “Worlds Apart” by Cactus World News is enough to remind me of a dozen memories carved from my mid-highschool days.

Technology in Job Search and Maintenance
echnology and the world of work are firmly interlinked. Today’s job seeker and successful professional must know how to collaborate and network inperson as well as develop technical skills for job functions, online networking, and personal branding. A job seeker needs to be comfortable with technology in order to access online job databases, submit applications, and complete assessments as part of a selection process. An employee needs to be familiar with technology in order to carry out job functions, access company resources, and communicate by email. Social media is leading more and more job seekers and professionals to also look at developing an online brand. “Ask yourself what you want to be known for,” says Ron Ashkenas. “What differentiates you from everyone else who might have a similar background or set of experiences?” On the Harvard Business Review Blog, Ashkenas shares two key concepts for building a personal brand online: 1) Identify what value you can create for others. 2) Control your online identity. ctor-host Joey de Leon and his wife, Eileen Macapagal-de Leon joined their friends on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land from March 13 to 23.
The de Leon couple was with Fr. Peter Coching and 14 other friends including newscaster Mike and wife Baby Enriquez. According to Eileen’s account, the group first visited
Cana, where Jesus performed His first miracle of changing water into wine. They also renewed our baptismal vows at the Jordan River, where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. The highlight of the trip was Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus where they visited the Church of the Nativity. Eileen said the place that touched them most was the Basilica of the Agony of the Lord. Its main altar is the rock where Jesus prayed before He was seized and crucified. They also took side trips to the Dead Sea, Petra and Tel Aviv. The pilgrimage will be shown in a Lenten special dubbed ‘Banal na Paglalakbay,’ on GMA 7, Maundy Thursday, at 7:30 p.m.
Irma Adlawan portrays suffering OFW
T
he movie “Edna,” with award-winning Irma Adlawan in the title role pertains to the sufferings of some OFWs who were made milking cows by some government officials. Edna is the epitome of an OFW who left the country full of hope. Working abroad for 10 straight years, she was surprised upon coming home to see her family still in the same condition
she left them. Worse, she was treated by her family as if she is a stranger as the bond, affection and love they have for each other were destroyed by her being away for so long. A unique movie about OFWs, the film is directed by veteran actor Ronnie Lazaro who also plays the role of Edna’s husband. Watch out for Edna when it is shown in local theaters.

A picture worth a thousand words (or dollars)
M
any couples put photography at the top of their “must haves” wedding budget. My fiancée and I, on the other hand, are a bit of an anomaly. Shelling big bucks on prints was never a priority for us. Maybe it’s because we’re techies and prefer everything on SD cards instead of in picture frames. Or perhaps it’s because we’re more enticed by catching everything in moving pictures, where we can relive the moments frame-by-frame years after we get hitched. Everyone has a preference. Your neighbour, your uncle and your dog know a photographer who specializes in weddings. Recommendations range from hobbyists to full-fledged professionals who carry equipment that probably doubles the cost of your car. Budgeting for a photographer (and videographer, if you’re anything like us) can be costly, whether you’re willing to spend a few hundred or thousand dollars. Thankfully, Winnipeg’s market is highly competitive and full of creative eyes. Budget wise, you have plenty of room
A pinay’s guide to planning your big day to play, and you can maximize your investment by knowing the right people. Here are a few pieces of advice we’re passing on to help make your photographer search simpler. 1.You know the guy/gal. There are a multitude of benefits in hiring a friend for your wedding day. You’ve seen plenty of their work, you’re comfortable kissing in front of their camera, and you’re supporting their financial cash flow. 2.Ask for a recommendation. Probe former brides and artsy friends for suggestions from past experiences and inner circles. It’s the next best thing to knowing a photographer personally, and your friends may have some examples to show you before you decide to organize a meeting. 3.Be honest about your budget. The cost spectrum of photography in our city is impressive. Some couples make this their priority because it’s what will remain untouched and unchanged years after the special day passes. Other couples prefer to enjoy the day without the restrictions of having to pose for photos every hour. Consider the option of videography in
your budget, as well. You may be equally happy splitting a hefty photography cost in two if you can capture all your precious moments on film to boot. 4.You get what you pay for (sometimes). Experienced photographers will have a wide repertoire of ideas for poses, props and settings, and may be better at capturing memories in the moment. Novice photographers may not be as comfortable commanding a couple, but some may also surprise you. Check out as many portfolios as possible, whether they’re online or in print, and see if their style matches your vision. 5.Arrange a meeting. Once you’ve compiled a short list of top contenders, consider meeting with these photographers to find out a few important details. You want to make sure they’re available on your wedding day, able to take the shots you’re looking for, and most importantly, send good vibes your way. Whether you’re willing to shell out a fortune or cut costs on photography, commit to the right portfolio and person. Every vendor you choose will be a crucial

The 12/21: A Band of Three Brothers by aLfie vera mella
T
he 12/21 was originally formed in Marikina, Philippines, in 2006. Young, energetic, and performance-driven, the numerically named band is comprised by the brothers Roman Maceda (vocals/guitar) and twins Rico Maceda (bass/vocals) and Roque Maceda (drums). Born of creative, artistic, and supportive parents (who used to be members of WEA Dancers in the 1980s), the trio naturally gravitated to music at such early ages. Roman was 12 when he began to learn his instrument; Rico and Roque were eight. The family immigrated to Manitoba in 2008. The brothers simply carried on with their passion in music. They cite as their musical influences The Beatles, The Police, Arctic Monkeys, Green Day, Blink-182, and Eraserheads. Aside from rendering tight covers that include The Dawn’s “Enveloped Ideas,” VST & Co.’s “Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko,” The Cure’s “In Between Days,” and The B-52’s’ “Rock Lobster,” they’ve also written their own songs: “Adventure,” “Audrey,” “Don’t Let Go,” “Every Time,” “Down,” and “One Last Kiss.” The 12/21
owes their solid sound to frequent practicing and performing; aside of course from their natural bond as brothers. Venues The 12/21 had already played at include Park Theatre, Essence, Lincoln Hotel, International Worship Centre, Canton Food Gallery, and Maples Collegiate. To those who want to

I asked Roman what suggestion he would like to direct to the Filipino community leaders concerning the local music scene, he said: “There are many talented Filipino artists here in Winnipeg; hopefully we can showcase them more, not only in the city and within the Filipino community but also elsewhere and to a non-

Filipino audience. I wish that there could be more shows and events so we can promote our artists and their music. Lastly, I hope that our own fellow Filipinos continue to support our own talents.” The name of the band was derived from the birthdays of the brothers—Roman’s being November 12; and the twins’, August 21.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

he Winnipeg Jets landed short of playoff expectations in the 20132014 season and find themselves on the outside looking in once again. In a season filled with offensive inconsistency, goaltending issues, and a coaching change, the Jets will look to regroup in the off-season to figure out what went wrong and what needs to be addressed to reach their goal of finally making the postseason. With nothing on the line, the Winnipeg Jets tried to provide some entertaining hockey for their remaining home games. The Jets gave Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins all they could handle as Olli Jokinen and Zach Redmond scored in the second period to tie it at two going into the third. The experience of the Penguins proved to be the deciding factor as Paul Martin scored on the powerplay to give his team a 4-2 win. The Jets may not have qualified for the playoffs but that didn’t stop them from throwing a wrench into the Toronto Maple Leafs plans of
making it. Winnipeg outworked and outplayed a Leaf team, who just like the Jets, have crumbled since the Olympic break. After the two teams exchanged a pair of goals in the first period, Tobias Enstrom scored the go-ahead goal that proved to be the game winner. Ondrej Pavelec overcame a shaky start to stop 23 shots in the victory. Rookie goalie, Michael Hutchinson, got the chance to prove himself to the Jets to see if he could be a future netminder. He looked solid against the Minnesota Wild in a losing cause. Hutchinson stopped 16 shots only being beaten by Charlie Coyle on the powerplay. The Jets would fall 1-0 to the Wild. Hutchinson would also get the start for the remaining two games of the season. This time, he got the results that he wanted. He beat the Boston Bruins in a shootout 2-1 that featured a few amazing saves on Jarome Iginla. Evander Kane scored the tying goal with two minutes left and Bryan Little scored the only goal in the shootout. After the game, Hutchinson was all smiles. "Being able to play well
against them goes a long way for your confidence, knowing that you can play in this League," Hutchinson said. "When you make saves on a guy like [Iginla], that is just an added bonus." The following night, Hutchinson stopped 35 of 38 Calgary Flames shots to give the Jets a 5-3 win. Paul Postma
scored the game winner in the third period to end the season on a positive note. There will be a lot of things that Kevin Cheveldayoff will need to address in the off-season including goaltending. He will also look to bolster his secondary scoring and see if head coach Paul Maurice will be committed to a
young and fast team. There will be a lot of work to needed for a team that finished 11th in the Western Conference if they want to give their faithful fans something they have been longing for a long time – and that’s playoff hockey. It’s been a pleasure covering the Winnipeg Jets for the Filipino. Until next season, Jets fans!

Horoscope This looks to be an exciting, if anxious, week in which a lot can happen. You might feel the need for change so acutely that you’re confused as to which option to take. Avoid impulsive options, but do plan ahead for your dreams to come true.
A lot seems to be going on underneath the surface, which might temporarily break your calm behavior. What this might feel like is an impending birth - like an idea or even your destiny is about to make an entrance. If so, it helps to follow your instincts and go with the flow. It’s not a good idea to try to push the river, but allow things to develop as they will. Resist the urge to hurry. Rely on your earthy sense of timing.
Your social life could play a big part in a decision to break free of routines and limitations. The idea of greater freedom and a chance to live your life on your terms might seem very appealing. You still need to factor other people into the equation, which means you’ll also have to compromise where necessary. However, one brilliant option may seem too good to pass up.
PAHALANG
You’re not so much dancing to your own tune as to jumble with others that include the voices of friends, family, partner, and perhaps children in the mix. If you decide to aim high and say goodbye to fear, you’ll carry your connections with you on your journey. The dream you’ve been nurturing may make demands on your time, which means it’s beginning to flower. Allow those who are a part of your life to be your biggest support team in the process.
Conversations may be a little confrontational. In particular, relationships need careful handling, as the potential for a petty out bursts may be high. One way to minimize the fallout might be to take the lead in bringing about the changes you’d like to see. These might include an important goal or career move that you’re unwilling to sacrifice for someone else’s sake. It’s time to reflect on your priorities, and once you’re clear there may be no going back.
Though you may feel like heading off into the blue and enjoying new sights and sounds, it might be a good idea to hold back for now. Though you’ve likely had enough of routine, it might seem more flavorful if there’s a good reason to stick with it. For instance, the financial resources might be there as a result, so you can totally enjoy life to the max.
Pluto turns regressive in your communication, and will remain so for a number of months. You might find that your thinking processes deepen, as a result, but you’ll also get a chance to release older mental patterns for newer, more life-enhancing ones. On another note, this might be the week you decide to become a freelancer, if the thought of too much routine seems soul destroying.
You might want to play for higher post as bold aspects urge you to throw caution to the wind and speculate into the unknown. You might also be aware of the work you’ve done and the connections you’ve developed and feel reluctant to let go. The good news is that there’s no need to. Fresh ideas and prospective might include ways to enhance the life you have by adding exciting elements rather than abandoning it altogether. A romantic delight awaits you.
Love affairs, flirting, and pleasure could be on your mind. You’ll seek the extraordinary along with delightful adventures. This could be a time of heady instant attraction and wild temptation to which you might want to surrender. There’s a cozy vibe showing up, too, which might coincide with a fun family get-together. You may have a financial encounter on your hands, too. “To buy or not to buy,” that is the question! Perhaps your conscience has the answer.
The focus on home and family matters could include relocating to somewhere more suited to your needs. On another note, there may be ongoing tension that requires a quick solution so you can relax and finally enjoy that peace and calm you crave. A chance to do something fun could take your mind off of those pressing issues.
Though bright ideas can dominate, you could suffer from over thinking, which might give you a headache. However, it’s only natural if you’re searching for an answer and determined to leave no stone unturned. Later, things could become even more intense, causing you to seek instant solutions. Though the current lineup might provoke you into making a move, planning ahead might be your best bet. Get in touch with your soul stirrings and determine what you really want and then go for that.
Decisions may be needed where finances are concerned. Try not to do anything sudden that might cause regret later. Tempting though it may be to take a risk, your best bet may be slow but steady changes. Perhaps it’s worth getting in touch with a financial adviser who can suggest a plan. On another note, romantic options positively glow. Long-term relationships shine with sweetness, while a new romance could hit the road running, especially an instant attraction!

e are approaching the end of tax filing season and a common issue is coming up again; what to claim for medical expenses? First, a brief history on medical expenses from my perspective.
The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
Over the years medical expenses have stayed much the same, but have also changed in several ways. The basics are: medical expenses during a twelve month period ending during the taxation year, can be claimed to the extent that they exceed the
lessor of 3% of net income and a stated amount that increases every year. In 2013 that amount is $2,152. For example, you can, for the 2013 taxation year, make a claim for expenses from February 1, 2012 to January 31, 2013 or any other twelve month period, as long as the ending date is in the calendar year 2013 and no more than twelve months. This allows you some flexibility to take advantage of separate periods where you may have bumps in medical expenses. In a practical sense, I find most clients prefer to

use a calendar year for medical expenses. At one time the claims for medical expenses were the same from province to province, but Canada Revenue was able to successfully appeal and reverse a lower court ruling that said all Canadians were to be treated equally. As a result even the federal portion of the medical claim is limited to the provincial list of approved expenditures. The result is some different deductions in provinces, such as an acupuncturist being allowed

in British Columbia but not in Manitoba. A major issue that I find every year is that clients are not aware of everything they are allowed to claim. For example, medical insurance premiums, prescription glasses, dental expenses, health insurance including travel insurance, flu shots, prescribed apparatus and renovations and mileage for distances of more than 40 kilometres per medically required trip are fairly often missed by clients.. I recommend to my clients that they bring in all medical related expenditures, unless they know it is not acceptable. Not acceptable expenses include athletic or fitness club fees, birth control devices (nonprescription), blood pressure monitors, cosmetic surgery, expenses for purely cosmetic procedures including any related services. Both surgical and nonsurgical procedures purely aimed at enhancing one's appearance are not eligible. These non-eligible expenses include the following: liposuction, replacement procedures, filler injections (for removal of wrinkles), teeth whitening, diaper services, health plan premiums paid by an employer and not included in your income, health programs, organic food, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements, even if prescribed by a medical practitioner, personal response systems such as Lifeline and Health Line Services. An expense, including some of those identified above as nondeductible, may qualify as a medical expense, if it is necessary for medical or reconstructive purposes, such as surgery to address a deformity related to a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma or a disfiguring disease. It’s not the wins you remember, it’s the friendships you make that will last forever

On the field with Tyson Sarmiento (12 years old), member of the North Winnipeg Nomads pee wee west team.
Ron Sarmiento has been part of the North Winnipeg Nomads organization since 2008 with roles as assistant coach and most recently, the community coordinator. The Nomads are looking for new recruits to sign up for the upcoming football season, and Sarmiento is looking at the Filipino community in the north end. The Nomads have 12 teams for any athlete who wants to sign up aged seven to 22. “We have some Filipinos playing right now,” says Sarmiento. “we want to show the community that football is a great sport to compete in.” Sarmiento says the Nomad organization takes pride in teaching every single player the rules of football, and guarantees that children and families will love it. “We have experienced coaches and trainers that help teach the game,” says Sarmiento. “We want to teach safety, technique, and most importantly we want these athletes to have fun.”
Sarmiento has two sons who play for the Nomads — TJ, and Tyson. “They both love football,” Sarmiento says. “The first couple of practices for TJ were tough because he didn’t really know the rules, but once he started to understand the game, he grew to love it.” TJ started playing football at the age of nine and continues to play today for Sisler High School. “Tyson’s been playing since he was seven, and if you ask him what he wants to do when he grows up, he’ll say to play professional football every time.” As a parent, and coach, Sarmiento knows and understands the importance of safety when playing football. “The first thing we teach, whether you’ve played football before or not, is how to properly tackle,” says Sarmiento. “We teach them how to tackle properly with their chest plates and not with their head.” The Nomads also provide equipment for athletes including shoulder pads,
helmets and mouth guards. A member of the Nomads organization makes sure all equipment is intact and safe to use. “This is a place where your kids will stay safe, show respect, and have fun,” says Sarmiento. “I love the environment football brings, and I enjoy watching these kids work together as a team.” The North Winnipeg Nomads are the largest amateur football organization in western Canada, and have been around since 1969. Registration begins May 1, and Sarmiento says registration is approximately $330 for the season, which runs until the end

of October — right before basketball season starts. For any interested parents, the Nomads are setting up a preregistration booth at Canad Inns Garden City from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 26. Sarmiento encourages all parents and families to contact nomadscommunity@ gmail.com if they have any questions or concerns. He is also open to hosting an open information night if there are enough families and athletes who express interest in the football. “I want football in the Filipino community to grow.”

The 2014 Mercedes Benz E250 Blue TEC is powered by a 2.1L 16-valve Bi-Turbo inline 4-cylinder diesel engine cranking out 195hp 369ft-lb torque. The new exterior design offers an aggressive sportier look, including an integrated Mercedes-Benz ThreePointed Star integrated into the front grill. It's a sharp bold look to the front
end that offers a really good sport look to the luxury sedan. The elegant styling of the interior makes this a great car to take on long drives and road trips. Seating in the front cabin is very comfortable and with all the driver assist features, the car could almost drive and park itself. The 2014 Mercedes Benz E250 Blue TEC, featured in Obsidian Black Metallic and it is decked out in options including the MDA Driving Assistance Package, a new LED Lighting System, MPP Premium Package and MSP Sport Package. A short list of the added features
include a 360-degree camera, rear window sunshade, heated rear seats, adaptive high beams, and so much more. The base E250 is priced at $57,800 and along with all the package options, the media tester model is priced at $64,675.

Town Hall Update by Jon Reyes
I
t has been 2 months since the first Town Hall meeting and many people in the community have asked me when is the next Town Hall? Have you spoken to PCCM about when they would hold an open forum to the public as PCCM Lou Fernandez stated in his CKJS radio address back on January 27, 2014. After meeting with the PCCM President back in March, he addressed that he would not have a public forum till the summer in order to complete projects; one of them being the constitution. No solid dates have been set as to when these projects are to be completed by. The best way to have your voice heard is to become a member
of the PCCM or any organization that practices proper governance and where you would feel you can benefit personally and to the organization. Remember these organizations are comprised of volunteers. Any organization can use help and more members to help accomplish each respective organization's goals and mandate. Town Hall meetings will focus on issues to help the needs of the community on whatever concerns there are in the community. Anyone is free to participate and voice their concerns through the Town Hall Facebook page. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me at president@mfbc.ca.

Melanie Wight, MLA for Burrows, issues statement on the Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Award Mr. Speaker, I am so proud to represent the Burrows constituency. We are a tightly knit community where people work together for the long-term health and sustainability of our neighbourhood. This month, I was delighted to learn that the efforts of our community are being recognized, with two local projects receiving the Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Award. The Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Awards honour people, projects and ideas that successfully turn the province’s sustainable development principles into concrete and lasting achievements. Lauren Sawchuk, a home economics teacher at Sisler High School, is this year’s Champion for Sustainability. She joins us in the gallery today. Lauren has implemented composting, gardening and recycling initiatives in her classroom, and uses the study of food to discuss important global issues, from environmental concerns to world hunger. Her after-school cooking program uses local, organic and fair trade ingredients including produce from the school garden.
The Education for Sustainability Award went to Lord Nelson Elementary School. Lord Nelson has been a leader in integrating sustainability into the classroom, extracurricular activities and students’ daily lives. One of their most successful projects is an outdoor classroom made up of five different habitats and over 400 indigenous plants. The outdoor classroom connects students, staff and community members with the wonders of nature right in the school’s backyard. Joining us in the gallery are members of Lord Nelson’s Winnipeg Harvest team and the Human Rights Club. These groups educate students about poverty, social justice and human rights issues, and empower them to take action through various projects. Mr. Speaker, I am so proud of the incredible work being done in my constituency, but of course, there are many great projects across Manitoba. I want to congratulate all of this year’s Excellence in Sustainability Award winners and nominees. Your creativity and innovation creates a brighter future for Manitoba.

hy apartments' landlords are very selective for prospective tenants? And why some landlords do not put the sign "For Rent" even if there are vacancies in their apartments? According to some landlords, they want only Filpinos as their tenants because they are clean, quiet, reliable in their monthly payment, and the most important, Filipinos do not complain! Yes, Filipinos are clean and tidy, thanks to our parents who instilled on how to live clean (even some landlords say that the Filipinos consume so much water for their daily baths). Filipinos know how to maintain cleanliness and order in the apartments. Quiet, reserved and enjoy cooking their favorite food (even they fry dried fish which makes the whole apartment block smell fishy). Yes, they pay their rents on time to avoid paying fine which is
charged daily. Filipinos are known to have a good credit rating And they do not make any complain! Yes and No! Last year, nine Filipino tenants out of 17 who are renting a West End apartment had a courage to go to the tenant commission to complain about the rental increase which was imposed for the passed many months. The rental increase is too much especially for those who have fixed incomes. At first, some of the tenants were reluctant to join: "Naku, hindi ka mananalo! Sayang lang ng oras mo." (You'll be a loser and you are just wasting your time!) Others would say: "Baka palayasin tayo dito kapag natalo kayo!" (They might throw us out if you did not win the case.) "Okey naman "yong landlord, eh bakit magkokomplain pa kayo!" ( The landlord is okey , why you still complain?") Sometimes Filipino tenants are not united, some are afraid to

report or to file a complaint, some would say: "Bahala na ang Diyos sa kanila!"(Let God be in charged!) And others would say: "I do not have time to go to court, my work is more important than to file a complain!" To make the story shorter, the nine Filipinos pushed their effort to file a complain against the landlord who raised the rent by more than what the law requires. The rental increase was based on the renovation expenses submitted by the landlord to the rental commission. But the apartment. according to them, was not properly renovated. There were many unsettled issues. For those Filipino tenants, the big rental increase did not warrant to make the apartment livable. Hearing at the Rental Commission Office between the landlord and the Filipino tenants were held. The Filipino tenants won the case and got their refund, including those tenants who did not join and sign in filing the complaint. The rental commission found that the

landlord had allegedly falsified most of the documents (invoices from subcontractors) to support the renovation expenses of the apartment. The rental commission office summoned the suppliers who were involved in the renovation. Truth came out at the end! These nine Filipino tenants did the right move, and the 17 tenants were happy to get the refund, but other groups did not. Like the other group of Filipinos who went to the rental commission to demand the explanation why the rental increase was too much. This complaint did not materialize because the Filipino tenants "have no time" to attend the hearing. "Lilipat na lang ako sa mas murang apartment, hindi ko kayang magbayad ng ganitong rent!" ( I will just transfer to a much lower rental apartment. I cannot afford to pay the rent!"), said the leader of the group who was frustrated with the rent. As long as we keep silent and we keep the problems among

ourselves, these landlords would still "love" the Filipinos as their tenants, leaving the landlords and apartment owners thrive and take advantage on our weaknesses. Every dollar counts. You are robbed with your hard earned money in the broad daylight. This is Canada and we have the right to air, to file complains! But we never learned! We still hear stories on unwarranted rental increases. We always say: "Bahala na ang Diyos sa kanila!" (Let the Lord take charge of them!) Amen!
