‘Din’ versus ‘Rin’
On Filipino Grammar
A
ny language is easy to use by its native speaker only if it is being used for conversational purposes. However, when it is used formally, proper grammar is required; and this surely poses a big challenge even to native speakers of that language. Having said that, here are a few details that a Filipino speaker must follow if she wants to be grammatically correct, especially when formal writing is involved. Daw/Raw, Din/Rin, Dito/Rito In conversational or informal use, the Filipino words daw, din, dito may be used interchangeably with raw, rin, and rito respectively.

However, when formal Filipino language use is concerned, there are grammatical rules to follow. On Daw, Din, and Dito Use any of these ‘d’ words when the final sound of the word preceding it is consonantal. Examples: 1.Nahulog daw siya sa hagdan kahapon. 2.Masarap din magluto si Mommy. 3.Matindi ang tag-ulan dito. On Raw, Rin, and Rito Use any of these ‘r’ words when the final sound of the word preceding it is vowel (a, e, i, o, u), a semivowel (w, y), or ‘d’ (to

The Last Leaf *The Filipino word daw/ raw is a reporting particle that expresses that the information in the sentence is secondhand; as in “they say,” “he said,” “reportedly,” “supposedly.” “Manonood raw sila ng sine sa Sabado.” [She said that they would watch a movie on Saturday.] *The Filipino particle din/rin functions as the counterpart of the English ‘too,’ ‘also,’ or ‘after all.’ “Ako rin.” [I too.] “Ito ay mabigat din.” [This is also heavy.] “Ang matagal na ligawan ay sa kasalan din nauwi.” [The long courtship ended up in marriage after all.] *The Filipino word dito/rito is the exact counterpart of the English pronoun here. “Pumunta ka rito bukas.” [Come here tomorrow.]

tudio-album-wise, I enjoy listening to various genres of music—be it a 30-minute symphony, a 15-minute Dream Theater song, a three-minute Pop song, or an ear-piercing Death Metal sonic poison. After all, when listening to albums, my only requirement is a good studiorecording production. During live performances, however, I add a few more points of criteria— appropriateness of the venue, stage presentation, visual appearance of the performers, and most of all, the instrumental presentation of the music itself plus the quality of the sound system used.
Concert Review That is the reason I did not enjoy the Beyoncé/Jay-Z On the Run Tour that was held at Investors Group Field last July 27. I just couldn't feel the musical energy in the large open-field football stadium. No backing band. Only pre-recorded music. And a group of dancers who had issues with synchronicity. However, if you're the type who is okay with a concert that involves only the artists' singing along a backtrack of the music (literally no backup musicians/ instrumentalists) and a small group of dancers, then you would
enjoy the Beyoncé/Jay-Z gig. To me though, it's just like an arena version of a dance club that plays technobass-heavy piped-in music to engage the crowd to dancing and a bit of singing along. If you're expecting an organic, wellpresented performance whose focus is the whole musicality and not just the bass-thumping sound, then you would be disappointed. Not that I don't like R&B/Hiphop music, but I simply could not feel the musical energy in the big venue without the reinforcement of any live instrument. Maybe, it would have made a difference if the concert was held at an enclosed dome such as MTS Centre. Because, I think that, soundwise, open arenas or stadiums are for live bands; they are not conducive to karaoke-style performances, in which the singers are merely singing over a piped-in background music that starts to rumble when played in high volume. But, in fairness, I could not generally dismiss the concert as lackluster because that would invalidate the excitement and energy of the hundreds of fellow attendees who danced, waved their hands, and applauded to perhaps every song on the couple's setlist.
But still, I've seen Pop concerts that fared much better in terms of musical performance and stage production— as examples, Taylor Swift's Red Tour and P!nk's Truth about Love Tour, both of which showcased live backup musicians who gave the show extra punch and kick. Or maybe Hip-hop proper does not really require live instrumentalists. But no, there have been Hip-hop artists who employed live musicians to back them up especially during big concerts such as Kanye West, Outkast, and Missy Elliott. The Artists Born on September 4, 1981, in Texas, United States, Beyoncé (Giselle Knowles-Carter) is an American R&B/Hip-hop singer. She started her professional singing career as the lead singer of the R&B girl group Destiny's Child, which had five studio albums to their credit: Destiny's Child (1998), Survivor (1999), Survivor (2001), 8 Days of Christmas (2001), and Destiny Fulfilled (2004). In 2001, the group went on a hiatus, to give way to the members’ respective solo careers. Beyoncé has been
the most successful among the lot. She has released five albums: D a n g e ro u s l y in Love (2003), B'Day (2006), I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008), 4 (2011), and Beyoncé (2013). Recommended songs are "Crazy in Love," "Naughty Girl," "Me, Myself and I," "Déjà Vu," "Ring the Alarm," "Irreplaceable," "If I Were a Boy," “Halo,” "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," "Best Thing I Never Had,” "Party," "End of Time," "Pretty Hurts," "Drunk in Love," and "Flawless." Jay-Z, on the other hand, is an American R&B/Hip-hop singer/ rapper and record producer. He has 12 studio albums to his name as a solo artist, from 1996’s Reasonable Doubt to 2013’s Magna Carta Holy Grail. Final Note At the end of the review, the beauty or the lackluster of a concert (or any event, for that matter) will depend on what the attendee is expecting or looking for. As far as I’m concerned, I always provide two opposing perspectives—the reason one might enjoy a concert and the reason one might not like it. And I’m also vocal enough to express my personal view based on my tastes and expectations.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. said they are ready for volatilities arising from shifts in investor sentiment that could lead to volatility in capital flows arising from the geopolitical tensions between Russia and the West. Last week, Russia announced that it plans to ban all food imports from the United States and all fruits and vegetables from Europe to counter measures imposed by the US and European Union against Russia amid the latter’s role in the Ukraine crisis. The BSP chief said the effect of Russia’s announcement was observed in the declines in the Philippine Stock Exchange index and the peso. However, he stressed that the volatilities are short-term while the local domestic fundamentals remain strong. He added that BSP will adjust policy levers should these begin to have a more significant effect on commodity supply chains and global trade, and on global prices and domestic inflation expectations over the policy horizon.

NoyBi is still alive and kicking!
A
couple of weeks before the May 10, 2010 presidential elections, a hitherto unknown group popped out of nowhere. It gained a personality when it became apparent that it was campaigning for Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, for president and vice-president, respectively. Nothing was wrong with that. But what is strange was Aquino and Binay, who belong to opposing parties, were supported by this nameless group, which later in the campaign came be known as “NoyBi,” short for Noynoy-Binay. And what is really strange was that Noynoy’s siblings, relatives, and friends ran NoyBi, while Noynoy’s Liberal Party ran “NoyMar,” the official group for the Aquino-Roxas campaign. Evidently, the AquinoCojuangco clan had ditched Roxas, who had to abandon his presidential ambitions to make way for Noynoy who was then considering a run for president upon the death of his mother, former president Cory Aquino. For Mar’s noble gesture, Noynoy offered him to be his running mate, which Mar accepted. Samar vs. Balay The NoyMar campaign took off to a good start but as the race drew closer to Election Day, polls started to show Mar’s survey ratings going down while Noynoy’s improved a little. Meanwhile, Binay’s ratings had gone up. That’s when the NoyBi campaign came out in the open. Headed by nowExecutive Secretary Paquito “Jojo” Ochoa, the NoyBi group had been meeting in a mansion on Samar Street owned by Jojo’s brotherin-law, Jose “Jerry” Acuzar; hence, the NoyBi campaign was oftentimes referred to as the Samar group. Across town, the NoyMar group met in the “White House” or “Balay na Puti” in Cubao, Quezon City, which was owned by the Roxas family. Thus, the NoyMar group had come to be known as the Balay group. As for Vice President Binay, P-Noy (short for President Noynoy), as he wanted to be called since his election, appointed Binay as the “Housing Czar” and gave him the huge Coconut Palace by the Manila Bay for his office. With a high profile “can’t-do-wrong” job and an office that was once a showcase of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Binay got himself a vehicle he can use for a presidential run in 2016. Meanwhile, P-Noy appointed Mar as Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), a job that is a lightning rod for controversy and scandal. And with all the criticism thrown at Mar, his chance of winning the 2016 presidential contest is becoming more remote as each day passes. But Mar had consistently disavowed any interest or ambition in seeking the presidency. He continues to deny it every time he’s asked. Perhaps he suspected
NoyBi was not about a NoynoyBinay victory in 2010 but “Noynoy in 2010 and Binay in 2016.” Enter Binay There are loose talks that the Liberal Party (LP) was planning to “adopt” an outsider for the 2016 race due to Mar’s low survey ratings. Binay confirmed that he’s been approached about it but claimed that there was no formal discussion yet on the matter. However, he said he is open to the idea of being the LP’s guest presidential candidate in 2016 since it would allow the country’s two biggest political parties to join forces. The following day, Binay issued a statement saying that he was open to the idea of having Mar as his running mate. Mar immediately rejected his suggestion. But notwithstanding all these loose talks, Binay has the support of P-Noy’s four sisters – Kris Aquino, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Viel AquinoDee, and Pinky Aquino Abellada. Last August 5, Kris declared in her TV program the Aquino sisters’ support for Binay, which makes one wonder: If Binay became the LP’s standard-bearer, what would become of Mar? Rumor has it that some LP stalwarts have given him until the end of the month to improve his survey ratings or the party would consider other candidates. Exit Mar The four Aquino sisters’ endorsement came at a time when the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) is badly bruised with the arrest and detention of two of the UNA’s notable leaders, Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada, for plunder charges. With no other potential presidential candidate with the

caliber of Binay, UNA would be rendered impotent. In reaction to Binay joining forces with the LP, former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada said that the UNA would get its own candidate should Binay join the LP. However, he said that if UNA couldn’t get a candidate, then that would be the only time he would consider running. Battle between two kings A contest between two of the UNA’s vaunted “Three Kings” – Binay vs. Erap -- would energize their respective followers. Binay who commands a large following on his own, and with the help of P-Noy’s “Yellowers,” would certainly be a force to reckon with. Recently, a P1.56 billion plunder complaint was filed against Binay and his son, Makati Mayor Jun-jun Binay. They’re accused of overpricing a parking building contract by more than a billion pesos. s professionals, whether we’re participating in a team meeting or making a presentation, we all have to speak in public from time to time. Yet public speaking is one of those tasks that even self-assured people sometimes dread. What’s the secret to being confident and comfortable in front of a room full of people? Dorothy Villegas, a Toastmasters member with Advanced Communication and Leadership Bronze levels, offers two tips: “Prepare and practice, practice, practice. And, say yes to every opportunity that will help you strengthen your communication skills.” Dorothy came to Canada from the Philippines in 2007. As a Computer Applications Instructor for adult learners, Dorothy had plenty of experience with public speaking and presentation in her home country but found that in Canadian settings she had to adapt to different communication styles. She quickly identified that honing her public speaking and
communication skills, including casual day-to-day conversation abilities (or small-talk), was important for workplace success. Lionel Laroche, an expert on cultural diversity, explains that presentation skills are vital in the Canadian workplace. “Canadians start learning presentation skills in kindergarten with ‘show and tell,’” says Laroche. “In some countries, people aren’t expected to make public presentations until well into university.” In Canada, developing your presentation and public speaking skills is one of the keys to advancing your career. Looking for ways to improve her public speaking skills and career prospects, Dorothy joined Toastmasters and then founded a local Toastmasters club in 2009. Toastmasters involves “learn-by-doing workshops” where participants hone their communication and leadership skills. “Toastmasters gets you thinking on your feet,” says Dorothy. During the weekly meeting, club participants assign each other a topic to talk about impromptu for one to two minutes. It’s a skill that transfers well to the workplace: Whether you’re called to present at a meeting, talking with a new customer, or problem-solving with your colleagues, the ability to think

quickly and speak confidently is highly valued. “Toastmasters taught me to be resourceful and to adjust my approach depending on who I was talking to,” says Dorothy. Today, Dorothy mentors new members who join Start Communicating, the Toastmasters club she helped to found at Employment Solutions for Immigrants. The goal of the club is to create a friendly environment where newcomers can practice public speaking and build their confidence for presenting and communicating in the Canadian workplace. “Joining a Toastmasters club ensures that you keep using your public speaking skills,” Dorothy adds. “By practicing every week, your confidence will grow.” If you are looking to advance your career, develop leadership skills, build your business portfolio, or stand out in your workplace, developing your public speaking and presentation skills will definitely enhance your career prospects. An Orient Pearl in Winnipeg Dex Panlilio – Keyboardist, Artist and Songwriter by aLfie vera mella

ormed in 1993, Orient Pearl was one of the Philippine Alternative Rock bands that gained popularity in the 1990s, courtesy of the band’s national hit
song “Pagsubok.” In its decadelong activity, Orient Pearl released four studio albums: Orient Pearl 1 (1995), Orient Pearl 3 (1996), Switch (1997), and Pagbabalik (2002).
The Winnipeg local Filipino band The 12/21 performs on August 23 at 4 p.m. Manitoba Filipino Street Festival (Garden City Shopping Complex) The 12/21 is comprised by the brothers Roman (guitar/vocals), Rico (bass/vocals), and Roque Maceda (drumkit).
Other recommended songs include “Kasalanan,” “Cry in the Rain,” “Somebody to Love,” “Hangarin,” “Maabot Ka Lang,” “Ang Minahal Kong Taksil,” “At Gumuho ang Langit,” “Sa Kaninong Puso,” “Nagbabago,” “Kung Aaminin Mo,” and “Muling Buksan ang Kahapon.” The key members of the group were Naldy Padilla (vocals), Leo Awatin (guitar), Ryan Gomez (bass), Dexter Panlilio (keyboards), and JB Medrano (drums)—with Padilla writing most of the lyrics, and Panlilio the music. The band soldiered on until their eventual dissolution in the early 2000s. An Orient Pearl in Canada Speaking of Dexter Panlilio, he and his family have been living in Winnipeg for a couple of years now. They arrived in Canada in June 2012. A passionate artist and musician, he remains in touch with his music. While Orient Pearl’s music was geared more towards Rock balladry, Panlilio’s current musical excursion delves in Jazz Fusion instrumentals. Aside from all these, he also hosts an Internet radio show on tinigpinoy.net every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; and gives professional piano lessons at Whyte Ridge Music Centre (123 Scurfield Blvd.) and C&K Music Academy (972 McPhillips St.). When I asked Panlilio what made him develop a deep passion for music, he said: “I remember when I was a kid—I would always listen to Manhattan Transfer ["Boy from New York City"], Tower of Power

During my highschool years, I discovered The Ramones [“The KKK Took My Baby Away”], Grateful Dead [“Attics of My Life”], The Who [“Won't Get Fooled Again”], and many British bands. However, one of my enduring and all-time favorite musicians is Joe Sample [American Jazz pianist, keyboard player, and composer known for his being a member of the Jazz band The Crusaders and for his musical collaborations with the likes of Miles Davis, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, and The Supremes].” I asked what he thought of the local Filipino music scene in Winnipeg: “Well, I think the Rock scene here in Winnipeg is growing stronger. We just need to have more gigs and more producers who will give opportunity to upcoming musicians.” Final Note So, in case you chance upon Dex (his nickname) at a Walmart or anywhere in Winnipeg, don’t hesitate to say hi and compliment him for his contributions to music and culture in general.

FOLK LOR AMA World at your Doorstep by Derick Ramos
F
or many of us, like myself, travelling to different countries to experience difference cultures takes a lot of planning and effort. To jet off to another country would require months of planning and saving. Luckily, Winnipeg is treated to Folklorama each summer that allows us to experience different cultures and cuisines on a minimal budget. With a Folklorama pass that acted as my travel visa, the only question that I had to answer was - where do I go first?
On my first stop, I travelled to the Far East to the Chinese Pavilion located in Chinatown. There were many displays of the rich Chinese culture that included instruments, a tea ceremony, and Chinese writing. Fried rice and sweet and sour pork were on the menu and was a big hit with the crowd. The show provided displays of Tai Chi, Kung Fu, and traditional Chinese fan dancing. An extra dragon dance and martial arts display capped off the show in the courtyard.
Suffering no jetlag, I took a quick trip to the Nayong Pilipino Pavilion Tec Voc high school. As I waited for the next show, I grabbed some pancit and a BBQ skewer and treated myself to a halo-halo. It really felt like I was back in the Philippines as there was karaoke to entertain me while I ate. Once the show started, the Kayumanggi dance group excited the crowd with their precision and creative dance numbers. The candle dances and Tinikling left the crowd in awe. My next passport stamp came at the Punjab Pavilion located at the Punjab Cultural Centre. I was treated to a front row seat and a dinner that consisted of butter chicken and rice. The dance groups provided a hip hop infused traditional dance that brought the crowd to life. The energy was so high in the room that it had two police officers dancing on stage to everyone's delight. With the temperature rising, I decided to cool off and take a Nordic cruise through Scandinavia at the Viking House. The Captain of the cruise took me on a tour of the five Scandinavian countries that featured Danish Monarchy and Swedish art. The main show was comprised of traditional dances of the region as well as a Swedish drinking song. Japan was on deck as social media had been buzzing about the Taiko drum performances. I headed to the St. Joseph's Hall where I was greeted by the ambassador and was given a tour of the Japanese culture. Japanese calligraphy, kendo, origami and kimonos were on display to get the tourists to participate. The food fare consisted of sushi and Japanese style hot dogs. The show featured judo demonstrations and was capped off by the beating of the Taiko drums that had everyone's hearts racing. It was a sizzling weekend and the temperature rose even more at the Brazilian Pavilion located

at the Heather Curling Club. I quickly grabbed their sample dish that had a pork stew with a chicken skewer and washed it down with a cherry Guarana drink. The exhibition literally kicked off with a Capoeira performance that featured high kicks and acrobatic flips. The Brazilian drum line captivated the crowd that left them clapping in sync during and after their performance. With the first week in the books, Folklorama has provided thousands of people from around the world with unique shows and excellent cuisine. The second week should be just as jam packed and entertaining.

It's almost showtime!

he biggest gathering of Filipinos in Manitoba is happening on Saturday, August 23. After several months of lead up events including the Tiannge ng Bayan and Festival Queen Coronation, there will be 51 participanting organizations will parade down McPhillips from Northgate Shopping Centre to Garden City Shopping Centre. Mark Bautista is one of the lead actors of the coming West End staging of the musical, “Here Lies Love.” The singer-actor will portray the role of the late President Ferdinand Marcos in the musical about the rise and fall of First Lady Imelda Marcos. FilipinoAustralian actress Natalie Mendoza plays Imelda, while British performer Dean JohnWilson is cast as Marcos’ political rival, the late Sen. Ninoy Aquino.

Nikki Gil gives her best performance to date as a theater performer. The Kapamilya singer-actress plays the role of Cathy Hyatt, the struggling actress in a crumbling marriage in the musical “The Last Five Years.” Gil essays the role wife who was left hanging by her husband Jaime (Joaquin Valdez) because of their differences. Cathy and Jaime alternate with their solos and only meet up halfway through the show. This is because the two characters reminisce two different time lines. Cathy’s story is told backwards after her husband Jamie leaves their marriage, while Jamie’s story started when he first meets Cathy. “The Last Five Years” opened last August 9 at the Carlos P. Auditorium of RCBC Plaza, Makati City. It runs weekends until August 31.

Who wants to be a Canadian RN? I know a lot of them who want to. Maria (not her real name), for one, has always wanted to continue practice her nursing profession even in Canada. Three years ago, she and her family made this conscious decision to migrate to Manitoba to settle, and for herself, to grow more professionally as a nurse. But since three years ago or probably four, the eligibility process for Internationally Educated Nurses has become more challenging. The College has required nurses to undergo the Clinical Competency Assessment prior to writing the licensure exam. The additional step has stretched the processing time even longer, as it also involves having to fulfill other timesensitive requirements again, like the language test. Effective August 12, 2014, The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) requires new applications to go through NNAS (National Nursing Assessment Service) instead of the

IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service). With this specific change, there is also another waiting time involved, not to mention the additional cost. In 2015, The CRNE will transition into NCLEX. As of this writing , policies and procedures are still being developed and/or finalized at a national level, hence, a lot of questions and queries are yet unanswered. Today, Maria is one- step closer to achieving her dream to be a Canadian Nurse. And yes, it often does take long. I know many stories like Maria’s, and I know only a few whose stories are more fortunate than hers. But it still saddens me to know that Maria’s story exists- I did not have to go through this long process when I became a nurse. I know the government and the Colleges have their own reasons for these changes, but it’s saved for another story. Right now, I hope that this short write-up will

reach the Filipino and FilipinoCanadian nurses who are based in Manitoba, and will invite everyone to be conscious of the status quo, especially the plight of the Internationally Educated Nurses. We need your stories, just as we need ears that listen to these stories. On September 5, 2014, the Philippine Nurses Association of Manitoba (PNAM)will be having its General Assembly and Elections at Filcasa Hall (442 William Avenue), from 5pm- 9pm. We would like to invite Filipino and Filipino Canadian nurses (registered here or in the Philippines, or both), who are based here in Manitoba, to take part and join this gathering. Community connections grow with local Filipino Facebook groups Facebook has always been about connecting people with similar passions and interests. Every single day, more groups and pages are created in order to connect with people in our community than ever before. We become members and Like Pages because those are the things we love and care about. The Pinoy Trail Bikers (Winnipeg), Manitoba BM (Batchmates) and Life of Peg are three local Facebook groups that have seen huge growth online but also strive to make connections in real life through group events & outings.
The Pinoy Trail Bikers - Winnipeg Facebook Group is now over 160 members strong after being created in spring 2013 by several Pinoy mountain bike enthusiasts. Regular group rides are normally announced for Saturday/Sunday weekend trail rides throughout Manitoba. Several members extend invitations for week night rides for other group members to join. day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of orchestra seats will be held for WICKED, which is returning to the Centennial Concert Hall with performances from August 20 - 30. Two hours prior to each performance, people who present themselves at the Centennial Concert Hall box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum; thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person. Lottery participants must have a valid photo ID when submitting their entry form and, if chosen, when purchasing tickets.

Winnipeg's Got Sole Captures 2014 Liga Pinoy Championship Winnipeg's Got Sole fought through the Liga Pinoy bracket undefeated to win the 2014 Liga Pinoy Outoor Basketball Tournament title. The final Sunday night match of the three-day outdoor basketball tournament had Winnipeg's Got Sole trouncing Lan's Concrete
73-48 and taking home bragging rights and a couple trophies. This is the 2nd annual Liga Pinoy Outdoor Basketball was held at Stanley Knowles School and money raised from the charity basketball tournament will be used towards Autism Awareness projects in Winnipeg and the Philippines.

Playing Rough and Being Not So Friendly Manitobans Winnipeggers have a strong reputation of being “friendly Manitobans.” As a local, I often find myself apologizing for someone else bumping into me or even saying sorry to someone just because I almost bumped into them. But that demeanor changes in most Winnipeggers when it comes to one thing in particular: the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In all the Winnipeg Blue Bombers games I’ve gone to, no other rivalry compares to the one against the Riders and the most
recent game between the two teams didn’t show any signs of the competition cooling off. During the August 7th game, the seats were packed and had the highest attendance in the Bombers’ current season with 33,234 people. The maximum seat capacity for the Investors Group Field is 33,500. During the entire game the crowd was going wild. Even during moments when I was inside the Press Room with the doors closed I could hear the sounds of the enthusiastic crowd. With every Riders’ play you could hear the
uproar of anger from Bombers fans and astounding cheers of victory whenever our team stole the ball. Overall, the game was pretty eventful with ebbs and flows of action. The game started off steady in the first period with back and forth touchdowns and ending with the teams tying. This was followed up in the second half with strong offence and defense by the Bombers, which got them to into the lead by halftime. Out of all the periods, the third was probably the most uneventful until about the last two minutes when the Riders
caught up to our team, creating an obvious upset for Bombers fans. But the real battle between the teams was definitely in the last quarter. While the Riders were winning at the beginning, with less than six minutes left the Bombers returned to the lead. The last five minutes of the game were deafening as Bombers and Riders fans sat in suspense to see which team would win. Even as the Riders eventually got into the lead during the last two minutes of the game, most people stayed until the very end seeing if
things would change. The game ended with the Riders winning 23-17. The Bombers followed up this game with a 21-38 loss on Tuesday, August 12 against the Toronto Argonauts. If you weren’t able to make the latest Bombers vs. Riders game, don’t worry – the infamous Banjo Bowl, the annual rematch between the Bombers and Riders, is coming up on Sunday, September 7th. And if you end up going, that’s one event you don’t have to be a Friendly Manitoban.

T
he Kia Soul is one bright car, literally. As I was picking up the Kia Soul, it’s presence in the parking lot was very visible. The Kia Soul in Solar Yellow was a standout in the parking lot and along the streets of Winnipeg. I was actually expecting the Kia to arrive in the Alien Green colour that I’ve normally noticed on the streets. Solar Yellow is just as bright, colourful and very visible. The Kia Soul is very comfy with a spacious interior for a 5-passenger hatchback. It offers an extremely smooth ride and just sitting in the driver’s seat, an interior and dashboard that is packed with features. The Kia Soul was extensively re-designed for 2014 and the features are impressive. Let’s start with the cooling glove box and air conditioned cooling seats which are welcome features with the hot summer days we’ve been experiencing in Winnipeg. The soft touch plastics on the dash feel great including those on the padded arm rests. Piano black trim gives the interior of the Kia Soul an upgraded classy look.
The Infiniti audio system with cool disc shaped speakers looked pretty neat as well. I kind of felt like a DJ rather than a driver with a “flying saucer” styled tweeter in the middle of the front dash board.

reached the ceiling of my prior job, and was looking at starting a business – but I didn’t know what type of industry to venture into. What I did know was that I wanted to do something of significance. When my wife and I met with our financial advisor, she spoke about the importance of financial management. That’s when I knew what industry I wanted to start my business in, and the rest as we know it is history. What motivates me is my faith and family. I also enjoy the challenge of building a successful practice, because every day is unique and interesting. I joined the MFBC because I wanted to get involved with the community in a positive way.
