Manitoba Government to Help Pangasinan Group of Skilled Newcomers Work in their Manitoba Inc. Picnic Chosen Fields Sooner Province investing in foreign credential recognition Manitoba is investing $1.4 million over two years to improve the recognition of foreign credentials and get people working more quickly, immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Christine Melnick and Advance Education and Literacy Minister Erin Selby announced. “The Manitoba government has been working to improve the recognition of foreign credentials, allowing new Manitobans the ability to put their education and experience to use sooner and establish successful careers in our province,” said Selby. “Today, we’re announcing new supports for our universities and colleges to work with trained and talented
newcomers to put their skills to work. It’s good for our economy, and it means newcomers can more quickly put down roots in Manitoba.” This imitative will fund pilot programs designed to assist internationally educated newcomers get their professional qualifications recognized quickly and transition smoothly into the work force. The programs will be determined through a recently launched call for proposals (CFP). The CFP will be open to Manitoba’s public postsecondary institutions and will be targeted at science, technology,
engineering, mathematics, health and trades. Internationally trained professionals a wide range of talents, education and expenses, and represent a significant pool of skilled labor,” said Melnick. “By providing programs to help them integrate more quickly into the labour market, Manitoba can benefit from their skills and reduce labour shortages” Under the previous project, bridge programs were offered for construction electricians, professional accountants, information technology professionals and financial services.
Summer time is the best time for organizations and associations to enjoy picnic in the park, and the Pangasinan Group of Manitoba Inc, has all the fun and food to enjoy. Led by its president, Peter Estrada and the officers, members and guests enjoyed the summer picnic in the park.

T
his time I am continuing with my discussion of different types of business organizations. I will discuss the most common arrangements, the unincorporated business, whether a proprietorship or partnership. Proprietorships are unincorporated businesses with one owner or proprietor. Partnerships are unincorporated businesses with more than one owner. They can include previously discussed organizations, including direct marketing, but usually are small businesses including sales persons on commission (real estate, insurance, agency), retailers, farmers, side jobs, craft sales, etc. Generally, it is any business where the income does not provide the owner(s) with more than enough to provide for living expenses. In many small businesses record keeping may be limited; sometimes relying on a profit and loss statement prepared once a year from invoices (sales and expenditures) and other records, such as calculated interest on loans and calculated depreciation and prepared solely for the purpose of filing income tax returns. Other small unincorporated businesses may be quite sophisticated in their record keeping, using a small business program like Sage Simply or Quick Books, getting regular financial statements (monthly or quarterly). In some cases the record keeping is kept by a family member and sometimes by an independently engaged bookkeeper. An anecdotal observation is that those who keep good records are the most likely to successfully grow into larger companies. Growth is not the concern of all business owners,
7
The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
but proper record keeping can help to operate most businesses more efficiently and profitably. Analyses of comparisons, margins, receivables, payables, revenue and expenses have proven benefits for business owners. One of my objectives in setting up my practice thirty years ago was to work with small businesses and provide services that were not normally available to the small business owner. During that time, the business environment has changed considerably and sophisticated programs are available to assist the owner in keeping records, making professional guidance significantly more accessible. For the small business owner(s) who has no ambition to grow, record keeping is still an issue. Inaccuracies and errors in record keeping can lead to problems with financing and the Canada Revenue Agency. Small businesses continue to face problems of fewer resources, despite more available technologies. Being smaller, there isn’t as much information to process, but constant awareness of many aspects of the business is very demanding. For example, are receivables getting out of hand while you are trying to increase sales? Or is your image suffering by not looking after good customers while you are
trying to service a customer who will not be satisfied? A final note is that if you are starting a new business and expect a year or so of losses, those losses in an unincorporated business can be deducted against other personal income. As well, if your income is lower in the first years, your personal deductions can protect you from higher taxes. I have seen so many people make the wrong decisions based on advice from friends. My recommendation in every case is to seek professional advice from knowledgeable professionals so you can make the best decisions possible at any point in time. Running a small business you have to be manager, promoter, financier, clerk, typist, caretaker, etc. It is a very difficult role to fulfill and not one that everyone can do. In fact, there are lots of failures as many people go into business totally unprepared. Any business you chose should be something you enjoy doing and then you should make sure you are prepared for all that will be required. One of the biggest mistakes is assuming running your own business is easy and will make you lots of money. But, and a very big but, a small unincorporated business can be very satisfying. It is yours and all the extra time, perhaps at less of an income than you would be paid elsewhere, can be very rewarding. Terry Robert B.A., C.M.A., C.G.A. Province Launches Starting Early, Starting Strong, a Provincial Dialogue on Supporting Families through Early Childhood Development Early Investment in Child Development Offers Lifelong Benefits: Chief
T
he Manitoba government is launching a provincial dialogue on supporting families through early childhood development, Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief announced today. “Research shows that what happens during the early years can strongly influence a child’s success in school and in life,” said Chief. “We all have a role to play in making sure we provide the best possible opportunities for our children, so we’re asking Manitobans to join the conversation by attending a public meeting or sharing their comments online.” The first public meeting was held today at the Aboriginal Centre of Winnipeg and was attended by more than 250 parents, grandparents and children. The minister will go across the province over the next few months to meet with Manitobans about early childhood development and the supports available to them. The minister will also meet with various stakeholders including leaders from the Aboriginal community and the business sector. “This is the beginning of a golden moment in Manitoba
where the tremendous science available on the importance of the early years has been recognized and embraced by leaders in the community, the provincial government and the business sector,” said Ian Gill and Ric Young of The Boldness Project. “These connections can transform the ways in which young children and their families are supported and served in the inner city.”
“As an expectant mother, I know firsthand how these programs are already helping me and my family,” said Wendy Hallgrimson, youth co-ordinator, Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre. “I came out to this gathering and invited everyone I know because I want more families to connect with their communities and learn what services are available, as well as
share their ideas on how we can work together do more.” “We’re listening to Manitobans to get their ideas on how to strengthen our early years strategy,” said Chief. “By working together, families,
communities and the provincial government can make a difference and give our kids a better start.” For information on upcoming meetings, visit www.gov.mb.ca/ cyo/sess_july_meeting.html.

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD SL price as tested was $37,698 comes with a 3.5L V6 stories that my friends and family engine with 260hp and 240ft.-lb of torque. still remind me of. A lot has changed with the Nissan Pathfinder over the last 17 years. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is much bigger and a lot more luxurious than my old 1988 Pathfinder. The interior cabin is nice and well laid out except for the faux wood grain panelling. I’d prefer to see carbon fibre or brush steel trim. The centre console stack has large buttons and knobs which come in handy during the winter time . Interior cargo space in the back with the 2nd and 3rd row seats folded down is great. In fact, one of the reasons I really liked the rear cargo area was that it was able to fit five bundles of the Filipino Journal perfectly. The additional cubby storage under the rear cargo area was good for storing smaller items. The 2nd row 40-60 split seating is equipped with heated seats and can slide, recline and fold flat for access to the 3rd row or increase cargo space. The 3rd

very five to six weeks, I get an email announcing which media vehicles are coming to Winnipeg and in the last round, I extremely excited that the Nissan Pathfinder finally made it to Winnipeg. It was like Christmas in June and I was scheduled to road test the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder in the middle of July. Part of the excitement was the fact that my first car was a 1988 Nissan Pathfinder XE V6 dual-tone red-grey paint job and the rear spare tire. I easily recall that the rear spare tire mount being the coolest thing on the vehicle. It added to the ruggedness during the early concepts of sports utility vehicles. Plus, it complemented my student life as a pimple faced twenty-something university student. From time-to-time, I still see my old Pathfinder on the streets of Winnipeg and remember fondly the numerous camping trips and off-road adventures. So many good memories, and a couple

Cozumel, "Island of the Swallows" Mexico's only Caribbean island, and its largest (48 kms. long and 16 kms. wide), Cozumel is situated off the east coast of Yucatan Peninsula. Cozumel comes from Mayan words "Cozam" which means swallows and "lumil" which means land. With approximately 80,000 hospitable Spanish-speaking people, the tiny island has a sunny and hot year-round climate with an average temperature of 81 degrees F quite perfect for a winter get-away. The Spanish first arrived here in 1518 and discovered Mayan communities along the picturesque seacoast. Once a pirate stronghold, Cozumel has evolved as one of the most popular tourist destinations offering well-preserved archaeological sites for history buffs, amazing diving spots for snorkelers and scuba divers, secluded beaches for sun worshippers, and markets and duty-free boutiques on the "malecon" (waterfront promenade) for shoppers and souvenir hunters. Life in Cozumel centres around the only island's "pueblo" (town) of San Miguel. The visitors are comprised primarily of two groups: scuba divers/snorkelers and cruise ships' passengers like us. The best way way to get around the town is on foot. Avenida Rafael Melgar is the waterfront boulevard. Opposite the ferry dock is the main plaza, the town square, where there are ATMS, banks and internet joints. Also on the main square stands the town's only church, the pretty Iglesia de San Miguel (St.
Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of the island). Three blocks north of the plaza is the "Museo de la Isla" featuring Cozumel's flora and fauna, geography and geology, and the island's ancient Mayan history and civilization. To explore the rest of the island we decide to make the trek on our own by renting a jeep. We visit the other places of interest including the historic ruins of El Cedral and the largest remaining Mayan ruins of San Gervacio hidden in the heart of the island. About seven miles south of San Miguel is Chankanaab (small sea) Park for dolphins and sea lions. Built around a saltwater lagoon, the park has a large stretch of ocean front rock ledges. By far the biggest industry here is shopping. You can wander Cozumel's markets for great buys of locally made treasures like ceramics,
pottery, woodcarvings, or onyx and brass, reproductions of Mayan artifacts, and gems (both precious and semi-precious). Duty-free shops offer diamonds, watches, and designer jewellery. Prices are usually in US dollars which are accepted everywhere as are traveller's cheques and credit cards. As of January 1, 1993, Mexico has a new monetary unit called the "Nuevo Peso" (New Peso). The value of 9 new peso is equal to 1 US dollar. Trying new foods is an essential ingredient of travelling. There are more than 300 restaurants in Cozumel but the cheapest of all eating places are the little markets called "loncherias" (lunch stalls) or the equivalent of our "turo-turo" in the Philippines. You can start with "guacamole", the Mexican classic avocado dip, before venturing on cuisine like "carne asada" (charcoal grilled beef or pork), "mole" (chicken or turkey baked in a thick spicy brown sauce) or "pibil" (chicken or pork baked in a tangy red sauce with orange juice and wrapped in banana leaves). If you are a seafood lover like me you should try "ceviche" (fish, shrimp or conch marinated with lime or lemon, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro). For our next travel we'll see you in tropical Costa Rica.

Unfurling the Philippine flag to see everyone’s face light up with huge smiles and feeling the pure sense of pride and joy made the supersize flag purchase well worth the investment. I guess I can thank eBay and my insomnia for those random midnight shopping sprees. The supersize flag will become part of a cultural collection from the Rosalinda NatividadCantiveros Foundation. The flag will be on full display during the 2nd annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival on Saturday, August 24th at Garden City Shopping Centre. Community associations wishing to rent the Philippine supersize flag may do so upon request. Email requests can be sent to events@ FilipinoJournal.com.

Barretto filed the request for a temporary protection order (TPO) before the Marikina Regional Trial Court seeking to prevent Santiago from getting within 300 meters of her and their household. Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, Claudine's counsel, explained that the petition would allow a judge to issue a TPO immediately while

Topacio also said that the court request had been her last resort because she knew it won’t help repair their marriage. Topacio refused to comment if Claudine’s action would lead to an annulment case as their petition do not involve the validity of marriage. The case was later raffled off to the Marikina RTC Branch 192, a family court presided over by Judge Geraldine Macaraig.

‘Boses’ tackles issue on child abuse
I
n 2008 “Boses” won best film in the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. After five years, the critically-acclaimed indie film is set for commercial release on July 31through SM Cinemas nationwide. Directed by Ellen OngkekoMarfil the 95-minute movie tackles the sensitive issue of child abuse and its adverse effect in child development. It stars Julian Duque, Cherry Pie Picache, Ricky Davao and violinist Coke Bolipata. The 95-minute indie movie deals with surpassing trials and redemption through friendship, music and faith. The story revolves around Onyok (Julian Duque), a child whose abuses from his own father (Ricky Davao) made him mute; and Ariel (Coke Bolipata), a solitary violinist who was
traumatized over his girlfriend’s death. Cherry Pie Picache plays the social worker who runs the children center where Onyok seek refuge. For promoting the values in nation-building and development, the National Youth Commission has endorsed “Boses” as a must watch movie for the purpose of raising the awareness level of the youth about the grim reality of child abuse. Endorsements were also given by the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education, the Philippine Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Department of Education, and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines' Episcopal Commission on Youth.
Even the charismatic archbishop of Manila Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle was impressed enough to give his blessing to the movie, saying God can use friendship, compassion and music to restore our broken hearts and spirit.
Dennis Trillo supports same sex marriage
T
he move to legalize gay marriage in the Philippines has been gaining ground lately as members of the gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) community have been pushing for what they call marriage equality.
For actor Dennis Trillo, he sees nothing wrong should lovers of the same sex marry. He also regards the issue as an expression of the peoples’ freedom which could positively translate to the progress of the country. It appears that Dennis is now more accepted by the LGBT community because of his role as Eric del Mundo, a gay architect who's out to win back his now married with children lover Vincent Soriano , played by Kapuso newcomer Tom
Rodriguez, on GMA-7's "My Husband's Lover." His first gay role was the 2004 Metro Manila Film Festival movie "Aishite Imasu 1941: Mahal Kita" As an actor, Dennis clarified that his effective portrayal of a gay guy is only limited to the screen. In the 1970s, “certified” male actors like Ronaldo Valdez and Dindo Fernando also essayed gay roles on films by Danny Zialcita, Joey Gosiengfiao and Elwood Perez.

China raises the ante
C
onsistent with her “salamislicing” strategy, China published a new “10-dash line” map, which is one dash longer than the “nine-dash line” map published less than a year ago. That extra “dash” is placed near Taiwan’s eastern shoreline. With the tongue-shaped 10-dash line, all the countries surrounding the South China Sea (SCS) would only extend 12 miles out to the demarcation line of what China claims to be her “national boundary.” China’s position is that these countries are not entitled to their 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as mandated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) -- to which China is a signatory -because China claims “indisputable sovereignty” over the entire area. In a major move last week, China announced that she has unified her coast guard into one organization that includes the maritime surveillance fleet, maritime police, and fisheries law enforcement. Prior to the unification, these vessels were not allowed to be equipped with weapons. Now, they are. Code of Conduct The 10 ASEAN members, four of whom have overlapping claims on the Spratly Islands, are trying to convince China into agreeing to a Code of Conduct (COC) in the SCS. At the ASEAN forum last month in Brunei, China agreed to meet with the ASEAN members in September to develop rules to avoid conflict in the SCS. Last week, U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden, who was visiting India and Singapore, pushed China to negotiate a COC with ASEAN members. The question is: How far would China go along in
developing a COC without giving up her sovereignty over the SCS? Which makes one wonder if China would offer to agree to a COC in exchange for the other claimants to waive their claims on all or part of the SCS. China Dream Indeed, that’s what Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “China Dream” is all about. It must be remembered that Xi is first and foremost a pure Maoist. And he’d probably want to realize the emergence of China as the world’s number one superpower. During the summit meeting between Xi and President Barack Obama in California last June, Xi told the media that he and Obama were meeting “to chart the future of China-US relations and draw a blueprint for this relationship.” Then he added: “The vast Pacific Ocean has enough space for two large countries like the United States and China.” Lake Beijing Last June 27, 2013, an intriguing article appeared in the Want China Times titled, “China to take Second Island Chain by 2020: analyst.” It says: “Within seven years, China will be able to control the Second Island Chain — a series of island groups that runs north to south from the Japanese archipelago to the Bonin and Marshall islands — now that the PLA Navy commands the nation’s first aircraft carrier, according to the Hangzhou-based Qianjiang Evening News.” The Second Island Chain runs through Guam, a U.S. territory. It delineates what is referred to as the Western Pacific from the rest of the Pacific. Simply put, if China succeeded in controlling the
Let's get social
Second Island Chain, she would be right at America’s doorsteps! The article also said: “In 1982, Admiral Liu Huaqing, the former commander of the PLA Navy and the mastermind of China’s modern naval strategy, said that it would be necessary for China to control the First and Second Island Chains by 2010 and 2020. The PLA Navy must be ready to challenge US domination over the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean in 2040. If China is able to dominate the Second Island Chain seven years from now, the East China Sea will become the backyard of the PLA Navy.” The First Island Chain runs from Japan’s southern tip through the Ryukyu string of islands, through Taiwan, through the Philippines’ main island of Luzon, and all along the western part of Borneo. Interestingly, the First Island Chain runs parallel to the 10-dash line’s demarcation. If China succeeds in breaking through the First Island Chain and take control of the Second Island Chain, the entire Western Pacific waters would become “Lake Beijing.” And in the middle of Lake Beijing is the Philippines, isolated from the rest of the world. But for as long as the countries in the First Island Chain -- mainly Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines – are allied with the U.S., China would be blocked from gaining a foothold in the Pacific. Pivot to Asia It did not then come as a surprise that the Obama administration has implemented the so-called “Pivot to Asia” that would shift 60% of the U.S.’s naval and air forces to the Indo-Pacific Region (IPR) by 2020 to counter a rising China. Indeed, the past two years saw the strengthening of the U.S.’s strategic partnership with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Thailand, and India; thus, forming an arc that would effectively contain China. With the deployment of the U.S. Seventh Fleet to the Western Pacific waters and 150,000 military
personnel to Japan, South Korea, and Australia, China couldn’t break through the First Island Chain. Recently, the Philippines announced to relocate major air force and navy forces to the former U.S. naval base at Subic Bay. The Philippines is also negotiating an “access agreement” with the U.S. to allow the deployment of U.S. personnel, ships, and aircraft on a “temporary” and rotational basis; thus, allowing interoperability for joint operations of American and Philippine forces when the need arises. Meanwhile, the former U.S. Clark Air Base is hosting an undetermined number of P3C Orion planes, the U.S.’s latest surveillance aircraft. The Orions are conducting maritime patrol to monitor activities in the SCS. Game of Weiqi A Chinese game called Weiqi (Go in Japanese), which means, “encircling game,” is a board game that originated in China 2,500 years ago. There are two players in the game. The rules are simple but rich in strategy. Played with white
FilipinoJournal. com
23 and black pieces (“stones”), the object of the game is to use one’s stones to surround a larger total area of the board. And whoever ends up with a larger area, wins. During a breakfast with reporters last July 29, Gen. Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle, the U.S. Air Force chief of operations in the Pacific, said that the U.S. Air Force will deploy “fighters, tankers, and at some point in the future, maybe bombers on a rotational basis.” He also said that the Air Force will “dramatically expand its military presence across the Pacific this year, sending jets to Thailand, India, Singapore, and Australia.” He also mentioned the possibility of using the bases at Cubi Point and Puerto Princesa in the Philippines and airfields in Indonesia and Malaysia. By the looks of it, the U.S. is ahead in the Weiqi game. But a series of bold moves by China is threatening the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region. With the new 10-dash line, China is raising the ante. Is China’s hand strong or is she bluffing? The U.S. is calling China’s bluff.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987
by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
Stretching My Hands across the Sea (Conclusion) (On the New Wave Band Modern English) Modern English was formed in Essex, England, in 1979, during the blossoming of the music genre that came to be established as New Wave. In their on-and-off activity, the band has released seven albums, 1981’s Mesh & Lace and 2010’s Soundtrack. Casual music fans might know the band only for their massive hit “I Melt with You”; but to a serious music enthusiast of New Wave music, there’s so much more that could also make them melt and swoon. This is the conclusion of my three-part article on Modern English, which I had the opportunity to watch live in concert, perform onstage with, and chat and dine with during my recent vacation in the Philippines. Everything's Mad (1996) I’ve read your books And seen your films
I’ve lived this life And tried everything But I don’t know anything Most likely because of the failure of their fifth album, Pillow Lips, to crack the U.S. market, Modern English went on a hiatus soon after its release. In 1995, the band became active again but with only vocalist Robbie Grey as the remaining original member, supported by musicians Ted Mason on guitars and Matthew Shipley on keyboards; and in the following year released the sixth album, Everything’s Mad. By this time, even many of the band’s longtime fans had no idea that Modern English was still performing, much so that there was a new album. Musically, this album may actually be considered a return to the band’s Classical roots. After the edgier Stop Start and the Synthpop-
oriented Pillow Lips, the band had again beefed up their music in this album with string instruments such as the cello, violin, and viola and even adding a touch of Hindustani with the tabla and sarangi. Tracklist: 1. The Planet 2. That's Right 3. Waves (When I Cum) 4. Heaven 5. I Can't Breathe 6. Here We Go Again 7. I Don't Know Anything 8. Elastic 9. Flim One 10. The Killing Screens My favorite tracks are “I Don’t Know Anything,” “The Planet,” “Heaven,” and “That's Right.” The melody of the strummed guitar in the intro of “I Don't Know Anything” had a ring of The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun,” which happened to be one of my favorite songs by The Beatles, included in the band's 11th studio album, Abbey Road (1969). For “Heaven,” Modern English obviously used as a template the song “Cheek to Cheek” written by Irving Berlin and first performed by Fred Astaire in 1935. Soundtrack (2010) There’s such a lot of tension It’s almost everywhere A sharp increase in volume It fills the air In between low-key concerts in

the United States, the band began recording new songs in 2001 for a new album, Soundtrack; but because of difficulty in securing a record label, they were able to release it almost a decade after. Tracklist: 1. It's OK 2. Blister 3. Bomb 4. Soundtrack 5. Call Me 6. Here Comes the Failure 7. The Lowdown 8. Up Here in the Brain 9. Deep Sea Diver 10. Antique Future 11. Fin The sound of Modern English in this album is somewhat similar with that of Stop Start—edgier kind of Rock, guitar-oriented, steady bass lines, simple song structures, with a very minimal use of the keyboards. Overall, the music has the sensibilities of '90s Alternative Rock. I could hear traces of Gin Blossoms, The Lemonheads, The Replacements / Paul Westerberg, and Toad the Wet Sprocket in some of the songs and also echoes of Ned's Atomic Dustbin. I don’t mind the simplicity; but because I know that Modern English could be really musically creative and intricate— best exhibited in 1984’s Ricochet Days—I am still yearning for yet another Classical-rooted album of new materials. Recommended tracks are “It’s OK,” “Here Comes the Failure,” and “Up Here in the Brain.” According to the band’s website, a new album is soon to be finished. During their 2012 U.S. tour, the band previewed one song, entitled “Moonbeam.” If the sound of this song is to be taken as a cue for the rest of the album, then the sound of Modern English is definitely back to its dark Postpunk and Gothic
FilipinoJournal. com
August 5-20, 2013 beginnings. The sonic circle would have then be completed! Modern English is currently comprised by the reunited original members Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals), Michael Conroy (bass, vocals), and Stephen Walker (keyboards) with Ric Chandler (drums). Touching What Greets Me There I went to the Philippines last April primarily to watch the concert of the New Wave bands Modern English and The Alarm. Prior to that, I posted the first version of this definitive article on the band’s Facebook page, so the members of the band might take notice and they did. The producer of the concert, having used the article for the promotion, invited me to the production activities. At the press conference, at Jill’s Restaurant & Bar at Fort Strip in Taguig City, Metro Manila, my luck doubled— the band’s guitarist, Gary McDowell, called me onstage to perform with him an acoustic rendition of their song “Hands across the Sea.” A TV crew from the local station ABSCBN was covering the event. The next day, the news feature including a video clip of the performance appeared on the program TV Patrol. McDowell put me on the band’s guest list for the main concert the following day. Finally, a friend of mine, Boyet Garcia, owner of a New Wave bar, invited me to the postconcert dinner he hosted for Modern English. Final Note Although the concert itself was not your typical jam-packed, people-screaming, body-slammingon-the-dancefloor spectacle, to me it didn’t matter anymore. My overall experience with one of my favorite New Wave bands was more than what I have flown back home for.

Lily Festival in Neepawa is unforgetable!
W
ith more than 2,000 lily varieties to be enjoyed by more than 12,000 visitors and tourists from Winnipeg, other Canadian and USA cities and from the overseas, the Lily Festival has become one of the favorite tourist attractions in Manitoba, thanks to the Neepawa people who have been celebrating the festival for 17 years! Browsing at the glossy souvenir program, a tourist or a lily flower enthusiast would be surprised to find many the ways of enjoying the lily flowers on display and on site, at Lily Nook, but also the three-day amazing entertainment program; and to top them all, the most anticipated annual parade with a colorful Filipino twist!
Yes, Filipinos are everywhere and Neepawa is not an exception. Thousands of our kababayans live and work in Neepawa and in the neighboring towns, and their presence has added a rich cultural mix as shown during the Lily Festival. Led by Eleazer Resolis, president of the Filipino Association of Neepawa,a large Filipino contingent joined the parade and became the favorite of the crowd especially when some members performed native dances, like the Igorot dance. Men and women wore red t-shirt with a word “SUTUKIL” printed on it. “SUTUKIL” stands for “sugba, tinola, and kilawin”. Also featured in the parade is the only Filipino store in this town, Tim Tom Asian Grocery Store. The

International Worship Centre had also a float in the parade. “Vickar Jeepney”, a vintage of the 2nd world war, and courtesy of Larry and Tova Vickar of the Vickar Autogroup, Inc.became the centre of attraction and our kababayans did not waste time to pose for souvenir photos. The Filipino Journal group composed of “bagong dating”, and the volunteers of “ FJ Sama- Summer 2013” had their lunch at Lily Nook valley; then the group went to Minnedosa Beach for meryenda and swimming session. Before leaving for Winnipeg, the group went up to the tower to see the panoramic beauty of the Minnedosa: a valley town where houses and buildings are sandwiched with green hills and mountains and the pristine Minnedosa Lake.

No one knew on Rizal’s birth that freedom was near June 19 should be a date that no Pilipino should ever forget, for this is the day that our hope for freedom was born. The birth of Dr. Jose Rizal is celebrated around the world much like the local chapter of the Ladies of the Knights of Rizal (LKoR-W) and Knights of Rizal (KoR-W) here in Winnipeg. The commemoration of Rizal’s birth started at 5:00pm on June 19, 2013 at the Rizal’s Glen Eden Memorial and ended

Filipino Journal At Your Service Due to the large number of inquiries on the article published last issue on the subject of the Filipino tenants who won their appeal against the exorbitant rate increase, the Filipino Journal has initiated a help column: “At Your Service”. Many of our kababayans are interested to know how to tackle their problems and the procedure to be followed to bring such case to the authorities. Right now, we are following-up with landlords who have promised to rectify problems; and to follow-up with municipal and provincial agencies to facilitate the strict compliance of the rules and regulations affecting residential tenancy. As of this time, another scenarios of rental increases
are being brought to the attention of the Residential Tenancies Branch (RTB). Please keep all your legal papers and documents which might be needed when the case is presented to the RTB. We will gather more information about the responsibilities of the tenants and landlords; and also we will engage with specific agencies which can help our kababayans especially those “bagong dating” (new immigrants). If you have related issues, how can we be of service? Please contact rod. cantiveros@gmail.com or call us or leave a message at 204-489-8894 or fax 204-4891575. All information is kept confidential. Horoscope The key to working with the romantic forces in your chart at the moment is confidence, believing in love, in yourself and the expectations that have taken hold. You are advised not to overreact to the difficulties you may be experiencing in your social activities. You should pay more attention to the words you use in public.
Instead of worrying about why you can’t find satisfaction, take a chance by showing others how much you care. You feel the desire to make several minor, but significant, adjustments in your work. The world of imagination, fantasy, art, music, or mysticism is very appealing to you now, and if you have talent in any of these areas, this can be a creative and fruitful time for you.
This is a time when new information tends to come to light which makes it clear that a change in plans or outlook is needed to preserve your security. Courage and determination to move forward will bring you great rewards. Good health will keep you high spirits.
PAHALANG
Take advantage of all opportunities to socialize with the people you have professional ties with the outcome is likely to be quite positive. If you’re feeling isolated or alone, generating inner feelings of bitterness or frustration will not help your cause. There will be an additional flow of physical and mental energy.
You would set targets and work hard in order to achieve them. Avoid arriving at conclusions without analyzing the facts. A possessive attitude needs to be checked for ensuring smoothness in relationship. Try to cut down on travels and take proper care of health.
You will be able to finish projects on time and your efforts will be recognized. The time is ideal to start saving money. You will not face any major health troubles. You must act upon these impulses or the person you wish to develop a relationship with may assume your aloof attitude is a form of dismissal.
Don’t be dependent on your friends and relatives for support. Be confident of your skills and try to be independent in your activities. Be careful towards health and follow proper diet. You will have to keep patience in professional life and wait for better results.
Support from friends would make you happy. Improved communication skills will be of help. Eat well and take out time for relaxation. A proper overall checkup would be advisable. Be confident while handling new ventures and the result will be in your favor.
Take advice or suggestions from experts before arriving at important decisions. Support and care from your partner would bring in positive results. You need to protect yourself against variations in blood pressure and improper food habits.
You are likely to be given the leadership of a local association. Partners should mutually cooperate to ensure harmony in relationship. Take out time for exercise to avoid pain in neck or shoulder. Pay attention to your health.
You are likely to travel extensively especially for spiritual work. Enjoy the time with your partner. You would prove yourself and carry out tasks in a better manner. No major health worries. If planning for investment, medium level investment would be ideal.
Be patient while dealing with your work. Health ailments like teeth problems, stomach ache and eye ailments are likely. Adjustments would assume more importance as mutual support between partners might not be there. In general, it is a moderate period concerning love or marital relationship.

ant to be a part of the best free bite of the sweetest corn in Manitoba and then wash it with a free sip of a cold apple cider? Then, join the fun on Sunday, August 25, the last string of adventures organized by the Management and Staff of the Filipino Journal, a promise to enjoy the wonders and surprises of the Morden Corn and Apple Festival! With the mandate to introduce what Manitoba Summer Festivals have to offer to our new immigrants (and to our kababayans who have not attended some festivals in spite of being in Winnipeg for more than 10 years), the Filipino Journal, thru the initiative of Ron Cantiveros, president and CEO, has been organizing field trips and excursions to the different Manitoba festivals for many years. Early May, a group of “bagong dating” (new immigrants) and “dating taga-rito” (old timers) heads to Narcisse to witness the mating season of the garter snake. The mating season of the garter snake is an attraction when the hordes of visitors and tourists enjoy walking as the snakes slither on the grass. To some, it is a special experience to catch and to hold the

tame and nonvenomous snake ; but to others, the fear of snake is felt. The Mennonite Heritage Museum in Steinbach is an eye opener for people who want to know the history of the Mennonites. A Mennonite Village is an attraction where you can see and touch the exhibits and enjoy the food being sold. The only frustration is the Altona Sunflower Festival where you could not find even a single fresh sunflower on display unless you leave the town and look for a sunflower field along the highway. Unlike at the Lily Festival in Neepawa, you can enjoy the more than 2,000 lily varieties either in the exhibition pavillion or at Lily Nook where you can bathe with the blazing colours of the lilies. You can even buy flowering lilies for your garden. The Lower Fort Gary near Selkirk town is a showcase of Manitoba History and this is the place to be to learn how Manitoba, and the City of Winnipeg came to being. A walk with volunteers in period costume makes the visit memorable. But in Selkirk, the catfish capital of Manitoba, do not ask for for fried catfish from

the Red River and what they have catfish fillet from the USA. Old Hammock Marsh offers an ecological experience. So vast, and so green, and well built for the study of eco-system, this place offers various programs and lectures on nature’s conservation. Our trips also make some sidetrips to Winnipeg Beach, Gimli, Lockport, St. Pierre Jolys, St. Malo, Gladstone, Innwoods, Fortwhyte Alive, and St. Norbert’s Trappists ruins and in the other neighboring towns to have some photo sessions to capture the remarkable monuments and historical sites which identify the city’s or the town’s characters and symbols. The last stretch of the Filipino Journal’s summer festival hoppings is the Morden Corn and Apple Festival where you can enjoy free sweet corn and a sip of apple cider. The trip begins in Winnipeg with unique contests along the way and you would not notice the distance between Winnipeg and Morden because of fun and prizes! With your $35 per person charge, you will experience the best laughter while having bus ride contests with prizes, a Filipino Journal summer fiesta t-shirt, one small bag of corn (4 pieces). Please call our hardworking volunteers headed by Carol Castro -204.775.0979 and Carrie Barroga-204.633.7508 or visit us at events@filipinojournal.com. Seating is limited. Remember, summer days are getting shorter! Enjoy the last breathe of summer in Morden, Manitoba, the Filipino Journal way!

FILIPINO FRINGERS REVIEW A delightfully twisted tale The 28th Minute’s adaption of Rope is loosely based on true incidents, but more closely connected to the Alfred Hitchcock film by the same name. The tale follows two privileged young gentlemen, Brandon and Phillip (played by Joshua Banman and Kevin Ramberran), who decide to commit the perfect murder by strangling their friend David to death. The story unfolds under the most chilling circumstance – David’s body is concealed in the chest that Brandon makeshifts into a dinner table. The party guests trickle in, all without knowing their dear friend/son/ boyfriend is in attendance. The cast of Rope does not miss a beat, and provides eerie entertainment with a few
surprising chuckles. Banman plays an incredibly convincing sociopath, and Darcy Fehr’s monologue in the final scene showcases immense character development and depth. You may be surprised with how amusing such a dark and murderous tale can be. With an all-around talented cast and director (Thomas Toles), Rope is a play you won’t want to miss this Fringe.
country, folk, jazz, Spanish and rock – along with associated personas. Throughout his piece, Padgett seamlessly transitions between the characters to explore the different nuances that make each genre special. This combination of good comedic acting and musicality is further paired up with Padgett’s ability to keep the audience engaged. So what genre is the best? Padgett ends his performance by playing different versions of - Jackie Doming Imagine by John Lennon, which seems to demonstrate that we should be accepting of all of them Whenever you get different music because all of them have a purpose. lovers together, you risk the chance of them arguing over why their genre is better. Ra Ra Wai Production, Vancouver, BC Venue 6 – Tom Hendry Theatre Growing up, Tanuja’s parents taught her to get a degree, get a job, and get married in that order. Now that she has everything her parents wanted, her mother insists for Tanuja to find herself. What else does she need? She has everything: a loving husband, two children, and a high-paying job. She’s a successful, powerful career woman. What more could she ask for? Veenesh Dubois wrote and starred in this one-woman play, Bulls Heart. She was amazing. It was easy to distinguish the characters because of her delivery. Her performance was gripping— the audience was absorbed into her story. There was never a dull moment. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire show. I wanted to know more about Tanuja—her past, her family, her struggles, her identity, and her transformation. I shed a tear, and I wasn’t the only one. Bulls Heart is a riveting and emotional show. You will be engrossed for 60 minutes and will leave you something to think about at the end.

E.J. Pratt Adapted by Kenneth Brown Grumpy Productions Venue 9 -Shaw Performing Arts Centre (MTYP) Four individuals open the show as themselves and fire off interesting facts about the RMS Titanic. This immediately set the tone for the rest of the play and what followed was a delight. The cast do a fantastic job of keeping you interested in a story you think you already know. The story is told through many distinct characters that have you clinging on to every word they say. Through 60 minutes the cast will have you laughing and happy to be aboard the ship with them and at the halfway point, you will be in panic with the characters on stage while the ship sinks. The minimalist props are used to create fantastic imagery; There were only a couple of moments where the directors visuals were a little too ambitious causing me lose the illusion and track of what was happening on stage while I tried to figure out what was I was seeing. A stellar show from the Edmonton based troupe and deserve our support! Go see The Titanic!

Step 2 Next, apply Mineral Sheer Tint all over your face using a Foundation Brush. Mineral Sheer Tint is a foundation with a tint of moisturizer and has an SPF 20. It gives you that dewy J-Lo Glow. It’s great for the summer time.
Step 5
Step 4 Step 1 Once your skin is hydrated you may want to use a primer. You can skip this step, but primer has a lot of benefits. TIP: Primer lightly moisturizes, creates a smooth surface, fills in fine lines and creases and controls oil throughout the day. The most important feature of any primer is that it gives staying power. Try our Retexturizing Face Primer.
Step 3 Now spot conceal with our Concealer/ Foundation Stick where needed. Concealer is used to cover spots of redness, dark under eye circles, pigmentation spots and any other areas that the foundation was not able to hide. You can apply it with a Concealer Brush or your finger tip.
The last step to a pore perfect complexion, is to powder your makeup to set it and control shine. Apply a light dusting of Cream Mineral Powder all over the face using a medium sized powder brush.
No look is complete without a splash of colour on your face. This is where blush comes in. It instantly brightens up your face and gives you a lively, healthy appearance. Apply Hush Pink Blush to the apples of your cheeks.
Step 6 For added highlight, apply Shining Star Loose Shimmer Powder on top of the apples of the cheeks for luminosity.
Have fun in the sun with your pore perfect complexion! To get the look come to the PROVICI Cosmetics studio in the heart of the exchange!
