Embracing winter at Festival du Voyageur

Filipino Journal Adventure Club members Bles Balverde and Jaina Medida braved the cold winter weather on Louis Riel Day to check out Festival du Voyageur along with thier families. Filipino Journal photographer, Star Roxas also joined in on the action with her family. Jaina Medida: "It's truly amazing. We lived here in winnipeg for 3years now and it's our first time to visit the Festival du Vorageur. We enjoyed the Ice maze, playground, food, souvenir booths and of course the Amazing Ice sculptures. We watched different shows as they showcase Aboriginals culture and their talents. As new immigrants, It's always Nice to know Canada's history and to embrace the winter

festivals. BON FESTIVAL. HE HO!!" Bles Balverde: "After 24 years, I finally experienced Festival du Voyageur for the first time. It was quite an experience, learning something about the Voyageur fur tradings past, French heritage and culture. We toured inside The Fort Gibraltar. We enjoyed watching the wood curving demos, craft displays and the blacksmith's craftsmanship. Listened to the explanation of how Beaver hat's are made from felted beaver fur. We wondered around the Kids Playground, took some fun pictures and watched families having awesome time with their Kids. Too bad we didn't bring a sled. Tobogganing would have been a blast. Didn't had the

chance to taste the maple taffy or buy the Voyageur sash, but that would have to wait till next year. Thank you to Filipino Journal for making this happen and for letting me wear the Pinoy custom made capote! Looking forward in making it a yearly event with families and friends."

The Friend Zone How to hire friends as vendors A pinay’s guide to getting hitched

Here’s my friendship policy: the more, the merrier. Having close friends in most places has plenty of perks, especially if you have particularly talented ones. Brides and grooms, take a moment and mentally list off all the vendors you still need to hire for your wedding. Looking for a photographer? Baker? DJ? Chances are, you may know a few skilled individuals who are

happy to offer their services for your big day. The question is, do you really want them to be a part of it? The answer should be simple, but there are a few things to think about when hiring your nearest and dearest. Before you jump the gun and reach out to your inner circle, ask yourself the following questions: •Do you want them working at your wedding? Maybe Tito Boy,

who’s a phenomenal photographer, seems like an obvious choice. But if he’s close enough to you, would you rather he sit back and enjoy the day instead of slaving over it? Relatives will sometimes offer great rates, but consider giving them a break if their presence is more important to you. •Can you kiss in front of your friend’s camera? Couples either feel at ease or freeze in front of their friends. If you plan on hiring someone close to take photos or videos of your engagement and wedding, figure out if you can easily separate your business and personal relationships. •Do you feel comfortable negotiating a price with them? The hope is that good friends will help you out where they can, financially speaking. However, this isn’t always the case, and it may get a touch awkward trying haggle with one of your besties. Try testing your comfort level first before promising them your business.

•Are you confident enough to enforce deadlines? Vendors will promise to have projects completed by a certain date, but sometimes feel a little lax when the final product is for a friend. It’s important to remember you’re a paying client and deserve to reap the benefits of one, and that

may mean asking to have your video turned around in six months instead of a year. Jackie is a communications, graphic design and event planning professional in Winnipeg. Follow her at @jackiedwild on Twitter or Instagram!

Save the date! Bombers home opener on July 2nd been played on Sunday. We believe a Saturday evening game will allow our fans to have even more fun celebrating one of the best rivalries in the CFL.” The move to Saturday means the popular Bomber Fan Appreciation Day will take place on Sunday, September 13th. Details regarding this year’s Fan Appreciation Day will be

revealed in the upcoming months. “We understand that creating the schedule is a monumental task for the League office as a result of FIFA Soccer games being played in stadiums across Canada, and the Pan Am Games in Southern Ontario this July,” said Miller. A mission full of smiles

A

team of 14 dental professionals from Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary embarked on a 14-day mission to bring smiles to Filipinos in Caloocan, Metro Manila and Ormoc, Leyte last December. The ANCOP (Anserwering the Cry of the Poor) Amparo Village in Caloocan was the first work site. This worksite was close to the ANCOP Village in Quezon City serviced in thier last dental mission back in 2006. The

community was selected due to its very high need for dental care. The dental mission set its sights on a second worksite in an ANCOP village in Ormoc, Leyte. Super typhoon Haiyan ravaged the island of Leyte in November 2013 causing massive destruction and thousands of fatalities. The Kindness in Action (KIA) and ANCOP Dental Mission 2014/15 would not have been possible without the generous contributions from donors, supporters and sponsors.

Grateful to the Breakfast Club (part 1)

D

o you want to understand a part of the Filipino community in Winnipeg? A good place to start will be 99 Isabel Street where you will find La Merage Restaurant. La Merage Restaurant hosts the Breakfast Club (Winnipeg Filipino Breakfast Council) where interesting discussions between representatives of different political tendencies in the Filipino community take place. This is not surprising because the seniors are the natural repository of what went on in the past. They were the ones who have gone through and survived the challenges and who are able to share their perspective of the Winnipeg narrative. When I first arrived in Winnipeg in 2010, I made it a point to immerse myself in the seniors community. The seniors hold the key to the history of the community. If you know the history, you will have an idea of the psychological terrain of where you're at. Members of the Breakfast Club headed by Kuya Fred De Villa meet at La Merage every Wednesday and Friday. In these coffee sessions, you will know who’s who in the community. You will discover the

Philippines) several times since 2012, so many people are already familiar with it. One advice that the seniors usually gave me was to observe and just listen to folks. They used to tell me that the city’s being so small should make me careful in my actions because gossips flew around so fast. Seniors cautioned me about dealing with some people whom they consider shady characters or opportunists. When Min. Flor Marcelino, MLA for Logan and Minister of Culture Heritage and Tourism, asked me in December 2011 to start exploratory talks with different community leaders about the possibility of organizing a Filipino street festival, seniors in La Merage and Garden City told me to look for the late Manong Conrado “Popoy” Gomez, who was then the head of BIBAK (Benguet, Ifugao, Bontok, Apayao, Kalinga). I remember Manong Popoy was so happy when he learned that I was an activist like him and a newly arrived immigrant at that time. The folks also suggested that I speak with Manoy Amado Mendoza of Bicol Association of Manitoba and Aklan Association of Manitoba. These conversations happened prior to the discussion with the initial leadership of the present Manitoba Filipino Street Festival. In the first dinner and dance fundraiser of the street festival, in July 7, 2012, I remember vividly that the seniors were the first ones I sold tickets to. I was so thankful for their help and advice during my early years in the city. Their warm welcome made me forget the dreadful cold of winter…

different ideologies that influence the thinking of the community. There are people who adhere to New Democratic Party, the Conservatives, and the Liberals. You will also learn about the secrets of the community. I first met Kuya Romy Tabanera at the Breakfast Club. He used to drive me around; he was the one who introduced me to GACIBO (Garden City Boys). Through him, I also met Neri Dimacali, one of the members of KAMPI (Kilusang ng Mangagawang Pilipino) – a community activist organization founded in 1996. I learned from them about the community mobilization that barricaded one of the big grocery stores (summer of 1991) on McPhillips for discriminating against one of the members of the community. Dimacali and De Villa shared a lot of information regarding this event. This story was my inspiration for my song “Dito sa Winnipeg,” which became an easy favourite since it tells about the different places in the city and some of the solidarity stories in the community. It has been played (to be continued in the next issue) on the local AM radio station GMP-CKJS (Good Morning

Ice Fishing adventures in Ontario

T

he Kenora region of Northwest Ontario is a very popular place to visit in the summertime. Many Manitobans make the two hour drive east to enjoy the clear water beaches, scenic campgrounds, and fantastic fishing opportunities. The scenic Canadian Shield topography is also a nice change-up from the flatland existence we enjoy here in the Red River valley. Not enough people however, take advantage of the wintertime outdoor activities that this area has to offer. Hiking on cleared trails, cross-country skiing, tobogganing parks, and snowmobiling are just some ways to enjoy ‘Sunset Country’ from a totally different angle. Over the past few seasons I have started to frequent different areas on Lake of the Woods to ice fish. For an ice fishing enthusiast like myself, this area offers a different experience from the hardwater locations closer to home. Snow covered pine trees lining the shoreline,

clear water, and occasional visits from the resident wildlife are just some ways that make these trips different from a trip to say Lake Winnipeg. Walleye, perch, and whitefish are plentiful but, the hard fighting Lake Trout that call Lake of the Woods home have quickly become my favourite species to target in the wintertime. A typical ‘Laker’ trip is not about quantity but rather about quality. Each angler on average will only ice about two or three trout in a day’s fishing. The adrenaline rush from first seeing the fish on the electronics, to the ‘sack of bricks’ slam, to the drag screaming back and forth battle, to the moment its big head emerges from the hole however, are more than enough to satisfy event the most seasoned angler’s fix. We access this fishery by driving onto the ice road network that is carved out every year by the local cottage associations and municipalities and then hike out

to any likely spots. A two-hour drive there and another two-hour drive back can be a bit long for a daytrip but if you head out with a good crew of people it can make for some good times. A full vehicle also helps with splitting up fuel costs. To fish in Ontario you will need to purchase an Outdoors Card and a fishing license. An Outdoors Card is valid for three years and costs $9.68. This card enables you to purchase fishing and hunting licences. Another option is to purchase a one-day licence which does not require an Outdoors Card for $13.51. The lake trout in this lake are a protected species which means there are very specific regulations regarding their being targeted

for sport. For more information please consult the Ontario sport fishing regulations summary online at www.ontario.ca/ travel-and-recreation/fishing. The Kenora region is designated as Zone 5. Contact me anytime if you have any questions about fishing in Ontario.

Gem & Lita in front of a Dutch windmill

A

s 2014 came to a close I found myself reflecting on the yearlong memories of hiking and exploring every nook and cranny of a steeply dangerous canyon trail, watching from a cold summit at more than 10,000 ft. above sea level the sun rise as it spreads the gossamer glow on the earth and sky, strolling the cobblestone streets of a city to explore its centuriesold architecture and historic sites, or experiencing gastronomic adventure at some memorable foreign restaurants. For 2015 there is a choice to revisit the classic favourites or to discover somewhere new worthy of your tourist coin. In alphabetical order the following places await you to fulfill your dream vacation. 1. Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands and known as the "Venice of the North" because of its 165 canals criss-crossed by over 800 bridges, flourishes in history, charm and beauty. Experience two of the many things aside from clogs

and tulips, Anne Frank and Van Gogh Museums that Amsterdam is internationally famous for windmills and cheese. 2. Cartagena, the "Emerald of the Caribbean" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site historic colonial city of Colombia on the Caribbean coast of South America noted for its pastel-coloured buildings, Fort El Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the world historc city of Las Murallas, Las Bovedas, and abundant fresh sea food. Colombia is the largest producer of emerald gems in the world. 3.Cuba, the largest island country in the Caribbean with a long history of Spanish colonialism later combined with capitalism and communism, is one of the top destinations for Canadian snowbirds. Now you can explore the Castro country aboard the Louis Cristal Cuba Cruise with stops in Holguin, Cienfuegos/Trinidad, Santiago and Punta Frances on the Isle of Youth, and the capital city of Havana. A trip to Havana is a must and a hop-on hop-off double-decker bus tour with an all-day pass gets you familiar with the city. Explore the historic old town, La Habana Vieja, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the oldest square, Plaza de Armas, or the gigantic Plaza de la Revolucion where political figures like Fidel Castro have addressed the crowds. Visit the Ernest Hemingway Museum or stroll along the Malecon where the locals fish, chat or just stare out to the sea. You can spend a day at Varadero of white beaches with palm trees just two hours away from Havana.

4.Las Vegas, the American city that has earned the slogan "What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas", is known for its mega casino-hotels, world-class entertainment and plentiful buffets. Your stay in Vegas will revolve around the Strip of iconic neon lights and famous sights. Check out the Freemont Street Experience's light show. While in Vegas drive southeast for about 40 miles (48 kms.) toward Boulder City to visit an engineering wonder, the Hoover Dam, that impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S. Plan also a quick road trip to stretch your legs at the Red Rock Canyon. 5.London, a diverse and exciting city with so many must-sees and activities, has been always magnetic. You've never seen it all in London so it doesn't matter how many times you've been to England's capital city where there's always something new. See London from above on the giant Ferris wheel "London Eye"; visit the famous botanic gardens at Kew; enjoy a musical or classic play at the West End; browse/shop at flagship stores on Oxford Street or at Harrods; visit for free the best museums and galleries such as the British Museum, Natural History or Science Museum; tour the Tower of London, the Westminster Abbey or the St. Paul Cathedral; see the changing of the guard at the Buckingham Palace; or mix with the celebrities at Madame Tassauds. The list is endless! 6. Morocco with African, Arabian and European influences and nine (9) UNESCO World Heritage Sites attracts 10 million tourists a year to visit its ancient Roman and Islamic points of interest. No trip to African country is complete without a visit to old city of Marrakesh with the "Jamaa el Fna" as its centre. And don't miss Casablanca! 7. Paris, the "City of Lights", is a gorgeous metropolis and immensely cultural. You'll always love the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysees, the Moulin Rouge, and the Notre Dame! Be sure to visit

Chateau of Versailles about 20 kms. southwest of the city. 8. Quebec, the pride of Canada is "So Europe, So Close". Discover 400 years of history in Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can stroll the only walled city in north America north of Mexico and its cobblestone streets. You'll love Chateau Frontenac, the world's most photographed hotel, or enjoy window shopping at PetitChamplain District or taking a walk along the Dufferin Terrace high atop Cape Diamond overlooking the St. Lawrence River. You'll also find horse-drawn carriages, street entertainers, singers, and artists. 9. Rome, the "eternal city" of Seven Hills and capital of Italy, has been a center of cultural, political and spiritual power for some 3,000 years.

Rome contains more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world. You'll marvel at the wonders of Rome from the Pantheon to the glory of the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican and the St. Peters Cathedral. 10. Saint Petersburg , the 2nd largest city in Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, is nothing but "sheer grandeur" in its superlative! You'll be dazzled by the five-domed Church of Resurrection (Church on the Spilled Blood), by the Hermitage and by the Catherine Palace. Travel tips: Book flights on Tuesday as it offers travellers the greatest likelihood of finding a good deal.

Chiz, Heart seal love story with a kiss Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, 44, and movie star Heart EvangelistaLove Marie Ongpauco in real life- 30, sealed their romance with a wedding kiss on Sunday at the exclusive Balesin Island Resort off Quezon province. The wedding was held a day after Heart turned 30 on Saturday, Feb. 14. Heart walked to the altar with neither of her parents, Reynaldo and Cecile Ongpauco by her side to give her away to the groom. In the background, Mark Bautista sang “How Did You Know,” the lyrics of which, according to Heart, perfectly described her feelings. Chiz was escorted to the altar by his twin children Joaquin and Cecilia, who greeted the bride with kisses. Heart’s sisters, with Camille as maid of honor, and Michelle and Lissa, couldn’t stop crying as they joined Evangelista near the altar to give her hand to Chiz. The couple

shed tears during the exchange of vows as they professed their love for each other. The wedding ceremony was officiated by Bishop Arturo Vasquez, a close friend of Senator Chiz from his hometown in Sorsogon. Concelebrating the Mass were Fr. Roger Joseph Erestain and Fr. Jerry Orbos, who delivered the homily. Among the sponsors are Senator Grace Poe, SM’s Hans Sy, Megaworld’s Andrew Tan, Ayala’s Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Roberto Ongpin, GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon, President and COO Gilberto Duavit Jr. and former Congressman Gilberto Duavit Sr. Other sponsors include 24 Oras anchorwoman Mel Tiangco, Viva Entertainment head Vic Del Rosario, Susan Roces, Eddie Garcia, and Jackie Lou Blanco.

Evangelista’s bridesmaids include Jennylyn Mercado, Lovi Poe, Carla Abellana, Solenn Heussaff and Alessandra de Rossi. Chiz’ groomsmen were close friends and lawyer colleagues. President Aquino, the best man, was no-show. It was Chiz who told P-Noy not to attend so he wouldn’t be bashed again as he was when he graced the wedding of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes on Dec. 30 last year.

Proposed SAF movie elicits mixed reactions

Former Laguna Governor ER Ejercito intends to produce a movie about the controversial Mamasapano clash that claimed the lives of 44 Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNPSAF) commandos, 18 Moro rebels, and at least 3 civilians in a police operation that also killed Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan.

ER, also known as Jorge Estregan, Jr., shared on Facebook a conceptual poster for the movie titled “SAF: Special Action Force” with the tagline “Para sa Diyos, Para sa Bayan, Para sa Tao.” The poster has reportedly garnered more than 4,500 likes and has been shared more than 600 times. However, the post elicited mixed reactions from netizens. Some commented on the

inappropriate timing since the issue is still being deliberated upon in the senate and in congress. Others agreed with ER and even suggested to donate the proceeds of the movie to the families of the Fallen 44. Still others regarded the post as mere propaganda The actor-politician has done several historical movies including the life of Asiong Salonga and General Emilio Aguinaldo.

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

One minute to midnight

E

very year since 1947 in the month of January, members of the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists meet to perform an annual ritual of setting the time on the “Doomsday Clock.” It is a mechanism designed to warn the world of how close we are to doomsday; the closer the clock moved to midnight, the closer we are to a nuclear holocaust. In 2007, the scientists added climate change as one that could also cause global destruction. In 1947, the scientists agreed to set the clock initially to 11:53 PM or seven minutes to midnight. They hang the clock on a wall in the Bulletin’s office at the University of Chicago to remind everybody how close we were to the threat of a global nuclear war. The following were the years when the Doomsday Clock was closest or farthest to midnight: In 1949, the clock was set to 11:57 PM or three minutes to midnight. That was when the Soviet Union tested her first atomic bomb, which officially started the nuclear arms race. In 1972, the clock was set to 11:48 PM when the U.S. and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I) and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. In 1984, the clock was set once again to 11:57 PM when tensions escalated between the U.S. and the Soviet Union when the arms race intensified. The U.S. deployed Pershing II medium-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles in Western Europe. In 1991, the clock was set to 11:43 PM – 17 minutes to midnight -- the earliest setting since its inception. That was when the U.S. and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and the collapse of the Soviet Union thereafter. The most recent setting was made on January 22, 2015. The clock was set to 11:57 PM or three minutes to midnight. That was the closest we were to doomsday since 1984. It was due to the modernization of nuclear weapons in the U.S. and Russia, the specter of a new Cold War, the problem of nuclear waste, and the danger of global climate change. Ukraine civil war What the scientists did not take into account when they set the clock last month was the civil war in Ukraine where the U.S. and her NATO allies are being drawn into a proxy war with Russia. It is feared that the fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists in East Ukraine might escalate should Russia decide to invade Ukraine in full force including the use of tactical nuclear weapons. But what is preventing Russia from intervening is that the U.S. has so far desisted from arming Ukraine.

However, President Barack Obama is under tremendous pressure by high military officials and a growing number of U.S. senators and members of Congress to send heavy weapons to Ukraine. Obama is said to be weighing his options. And then… Last February 12, after a marathon 17-hour summit of Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President François Hollande, and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Minsk, Belarus, they agreed on a ceasefire and a slew of measures to achieve peace in Ukraine. Putin was the first to announce, saying: “We have agreed on a ceasefire from midnight 15 February.” Then he added: “There is also the political settlement. The first thing is constitutional reform that should take into consideration the legitimate rights of people who live in Donbas. There are also border issues. Finally there are (sic) a whole range of economic and humanitarian issues.” Peacemaker or renegade? But peace was as remote as it was before the summit. No sooner had the four leaders signed the agreement than Ukraine claimed that 50 Russian tanks, 40 missile systems, and 40 armored vehicles crossed the border into Ukraine. It was also reported that an armored column of Russianspeaking soldiers without insignias – the “little green men” -- were advancing around Debaltseve, a strategic rail hub, which had been under intense artillery shelling by the rebels. Once again, Putin denied sending heavy weapons and troops to Ukraine. But the U.S. released photos taken by satellites showing the movement of heavy weapons into eastern Ukraine right after the ceasefire agreement was signed. Evidently, Putin is doing everything he can to make the ceasefire fail just like the first one he agreed to last September. And this leads many to believe that the ceasefire would not last too long, which then begs the question: What exactly does Putin want? While speculations abound about what his real intentions were, one known fact is that he felt very badly about the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. During his state of the nation address to the country’s parliament in April 2005, he bitterly said: “Above all, we should acknowledge that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century. As for the Russian nation, it became a genuine drama. Tens of millions of our co-citizens and co-patriots found themselves outside Russian territory. Moreover, the epidemic of disintegration infected Russia itself.” Territorial expansion It did not then come as a

Let's get social

surprise that when Putin was elected to a third term in May 2012, he embarked on a road map to restore “Mother Russia” to her old imperial glory. In 2014, he made several moves to assert his leadership over the Eurasian subcontinent that includes all of the defunct Soviet Union’s former republics and the Eastern European client states from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. It didn’t take long for Putin to annex Crimea, which stunned the U.S. and her NATO allies. Unprepared for such a blatant act of aggression, all they could do was impose economic sanctions. Emboldened by the ease with which he grabbed Crimea, Putin then called Ukrainian President Poroshenko and threateningly told him: “If I wanted, in two days I could have Russian troops not only in Kiev, but also in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Bucharest.” These are the capitals of NATO members who were formerly aligned with the Soviet Union before her demise. It gave them an eerie feeling of déjà vu when the Soviet Union forcibly imposed her reign over them in the closing days of World War II. Now, in the midst of a civil war that could escalate into World War III, pitting NATO against Russia, planet Earth has never been closer to nuclear annihilation. The warring sides have enough nuclear warheads between them – NATO has 8,175 and Russia has 8,420 -- to fry the world into radioactive smithereens. And all it would take is for Putin to press the “doomsday button.” From Munich to Minsk In retrospect, one wonders if the Minsk Agreement was an attempt to appease Putin by acceding to his demands including the “division” of Ukraine into several autonomous states within a federation. But once the Ukrainian Federation is created, what would prevent the pro-Russian autonomous states – Donetsk and Lugansk -- from seceding, ala Crimea, from Ukraine in the future? Which makes one wonder if the Minsk Agreement of 2015 had the hallmark of the Munich Agreement of 1938? That was when the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy signed a settlement allowing Germany’s annexation of parts of Czechoslovakia in return for peace. But less than six months later, Germany invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia. World War II had begun. For as long as the U.S. and her NATO allies stay out of Ukraine and refrain from sending lethal weapons to Ukraine, Putin is appeased. But what if the ceasefire were broken? Would the U.S. provide Ukraine with the weapons needed to defend her territory? Or would Obama throw Poroshenko under the bus and turn a blind eye to the pillage that would follow the collapse of Ukraine? Or… and here is the big IF… If Obama decides to send all the weapons Ukraine needs, what would Putin do? Would he make good of his promise to go nuclear? And just the thought of Putin going ballistic, that alone would set the “Doomsday Clock” to 11:59 PM… or one minute to midnight. God forbid!

Horoscope Your sensitive, spiritual side is out in full force this week. Pay attention to things that could save you time and money. There’s fun to be had if you want it. Passions will be unleashed, putting you in a much more proactive mood. Your sex appeal could shoot up several scores, too, making this the perfect time for a sizzling date.

You’re on a roll socially, with many opportunities to mix, mingle, and enjoy some fabulous evenings out. You might feel motivated to volunteer, too, particularly if others need a helping hand. It should now be easier to make progress with your career and begin to put plans into action. The focus shifts to spiritual matters, rest, and relaxation. If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, the nature hints that the chance to recharge could do you good.

With a full house at the top of your chart, you might be in the position of having to make key decisions that could affect future plans. If you have big dreams, you’re ideally placed to start demonstrating them. Your social life starts to sizzle with many opportunities for magical evenings out.

Shared resources may be one of the best times for reorganizing your financial situation, or at least making a start on it. Use this opportunity to get advice and put it into action. You’re also primed for adventure and embracing a learning curve. A lineup might encourage vacation plans, whether you go abroad or stay close to home. The important thing is to relax and nurture key goals that you’ll soon put into action. This is a good time to sign documents, close deals, and generally get back into the swing of things. When it comes to finances you’ll need to keep a tight hold on things. You’ll be tempted to splurge just for the sake of it, so go easy if you can. The fun begins later, when action-packed influences coincide with unleashed passions.

You’ve been thinking of starting a business enterprise or developing your creative potential, so this is the perfect time to move from research to action. Romantic opportunities look promising, with a chance to take a budding liaison to a new level of commitment. Things really start to sizzle from making this an excellent time for a passionate encounter.

This isn’t the time to be overconfident or take things for granted. Instead, it helps to bring balanced judgment to the table, particularly if your reputation is at stake. Later, indecision and a lack of facts may give way to a determination to succeed no matter what. This can also be the perfect opportunity to clear out mess and get your place looking exactly as you want it.

The early part of the week offer tender embraces and the chance for a special date. Romance is sweet and magical, leading to the potential for a relationship that includes mystery and the unknown. You have a great opportunity to start on DIY projects or other plans as the cosmos lends its support. You’ll be more competitive at work and while working out.

You’ll find that your efforts are quickly rewarded. Meanwhile, continue to stay in control where finances are concerned. Cut back on items you no longer use or need, as doing so could save you a lot. New ideas inhabit your mental universe, enhancing conversation. Go easy to avoid a spat, however!

You’ll gain control of things this week that will enable you to push ahead with personal plans. Your spiritual sector can be useful for starting practices such as meditation, yoga, or anything else that helps you feel more peaceful. Avoid impulsive spending and direct your energy wisely. Take care of any immediate problems.

Home life seems upbeat so long as everyone is being honest with each other. There’s a chance that this might not be the case, particularly if you sense someone isn’t telling the truth. Any crisis resulting from this may be short-lived. Instead of holding back, people will be ready to tell it like it is, helping to clear the air. On a positive note, a burst of passion could reignite a relationship.

Romantic opportunities seem particularly exciting this week. This will encourage you to add a touch of magic to an ongoing relationship or to help a new liaison blossom. You’ll also find that interactions, including business meetings, benefit from your creative and inspirational input.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

Moving Forward

T

he Evander Kane era in Winnipeg is officially over. The much maligned forward was packaged up with defenseman Zach Bogosian and goaltending prospect Jason Kasdorf and sent to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Tyler Myers, forward Drew Stafford, prospects Joel Armia and Brendan Lemieux along with a 2015 firstround pick. The trade was sparked by a much talked about locker room incident where Kane failed to show up to a team meeting following the team's dress code that rubbed some of his teammates the wrong way. Kane was scratched for a game in his hometown and opted for season ending surgery. Even with Kane out for the rest of the season, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff fielded many offers for the 23 year old before pulling the trigger with Buffalo. Cheveldayoff not only addressed the Kane issue but also provided the Jets with a solid core ready for the playoff chase. After dropping four straight, Winnipeg's woes continued against the Vancouver Canucks. With Evander Kane scratched in his hometown, Bryan Little provided the offense with a goal and an assist against Vancouver. Little's goal gave the Jets a 2-1 lead early in the third until Ronalds Kenins beat Ondrej Pavelec short side to tie it up and send the game to overtime Just 36 seconds into overtime, Luca Sbisa finished a 2 on 1 to give the Canucks a 3-2 victory. Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson has had the Chicago Blackhawks number all season long and looked to backstop his team back into the win column. Jets Mark Scheifele opened the scoring in the first period and Patrick Kane tied the game in the second period.

After 60 minutes, extra time was needed where Brandon Saad made no mistake off of a Patrick Kane pass giving the Hawks a 2-1 overtime win. Despite the loss and six game losing streak, Scheifele was confident in his team's play. "A big, strong, fast, physical team," Scheifele said. "That's Winnipeg Jets hockey, and we definitely showed a lot of that." The Jets faced the Colorado Avalanche and needed a win to distance themselves from teams in the wild card race. After allowing the opening goal to Avs Tyson Barrie, the Jets stormed back in the second period with four unanswered goals and never looked back. Mathieu Perreault had a goal and two assists to lead the Jets to a 5-3 win and snap the losing skid. Jets rivals, the Minnesota Wild, came to the MTS Centre with one of the hottest goalies in the league. With the Wild chasing the Jets in the standings, Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk and Michael Hutchinson made sure to give their team a chance at two points. Defenseman Toby Enstrom opened the scoring in the third period but Wild Jason Pominville would reply shortly after. Overtime was needed and

Dustin Byfuglien capitalized on a turnover and went high on Dubnyk giving the Jets a 2-1 win. One of the NHL's best teams, the Nashville Predators, welcomed the Jets and their newest acquisitions of Tyler Myers and Drew Stafford. The Preds showed why they were the Central division leaders beating Winnipeg 3-1. Possible Vezina trophy candidate Pekka Rinne perplexed the Jets all night stopping 32 of 33 shots in a stellar performance. The newest Jets made their impact in the Motor City against the Detroit Red Wings. Tyler Myers had a pair of assists and Winnipeg rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead. Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk tied the game in the third sending the game to extra time and eventually to a shootout. In the fourth round, Drew Stafford scored the only goal lifting the Jets to a 5-4 victory. In what should have been an easier contest, the Edmonton Oilers travelled to Winnipeg and gave the Jets all they could handle. Throughout the 60 minutes, both team exchanged goals and needed a shootout. Michael Hutchinson shut the door on the Oilers and Blake Wheeler scored the only goal in the shootout for a 5-4 win. Hutchinson remained perfect in shootouts stopping 14 of 14 shots. Bryan Little had a goal and two assists and Tyler Myers got his first goal as a Jet. The newest additions have made their impact in quick fashion and have Jets fans optimistic about their playoff chances. Winnipeg will embark on two game road trip against the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs.

OPM Patikim sa Jimel’s by aLfie vera mella

T

he organizers of the forthcoming OPM Legends (March 14, Club Regent Event Centre) staged a courtesy taster show held at Jimel’s International Cuisine on Valentine’s Day. It was the producers’ way of showing gratitude to those who support the upcoming show, especially those who have already bought their tickets. OPM Patikim featured performances by the front acts of OPM Legends— local artists/bands Levy Abad, haLf man haLf eLf, and Traffik Jamm. First to perform, Abad

dished out a number of his usual acoustic-guitar-vocal ditties that included his own compositions like “Dito sa Winnipeg” and a handful of ch: oice covers like Buklod’s “Kanlungan” and Rey Valera’s “Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko.” For their part, haLf man haLf eLf showcased their brand of Classical New Wave music with originals “Brilliance,” “Simple,” and “Brother’s Pain” and an impressive version of Yano’s “Esem,” which was sung by the non-Filipino violinist of the group. The show was closed

to a heat by the rocking set of Traffik Jamm, which delivered engaging foot stompers. As the bill said, OPM Patikim; thus, that was just a taster. A much more astounding performances by the three local acts as well as by the main touring artists themselves—Rico J. Puno, Hajji Alejandro, Marco Sison, and Eva Eugenio—are yet to be seen come March 14 at Club Regent Event Centre. To those who are yet to get their tickets, please contact Dennis Castañeda: 204-963-7868.

Four Tips to Focus Your Job Search By Jonathan Bauer

I

f you’re looking for a job, congratulations on taking the next step to achieve your goals! You may be finding that the job search process is more of a marathon than a sprint. To be successful, job seekers need to stay resilient and optimistic as they follow leads and network to find the job that supports their career growth.

These four tips can help you to stay positive and focused during your job search: 1. Start with 100. Job seekers are most productive when they search from a list of 100 companies that hire candidates with their skills. Instead of applying for just one job and hoping for a positive result, make a list of up to 100 companies and apply to all of them. Working through your list will keep you focused on making new connections every day. 2. Ensure your skills match company expectations. Pay close attention to the requirements in job descriptions in order to find openings that fit your skills and experience. For example, if a

company is looking for an individual with five years of experience, they will rarely consider someone who is new to the industry. Applying to jobs that are a good fit helps you to use your resources wisely. 3. Understand how companies hire and promote. Companies hire external candidates every day; however, some positions are also open to applications from internal candidates. Because internal candidates understand the organization’s culture and expectations, they may be in a better position to get the promotion or transfer. Recruiters from large organizations in Manitoba advise job seekers to “get their foot in the door.” This involves applying to a job that’s related to your

background, and then, once you’re hired, applying for your dream position as an internal candidate. 4. Join a job search club. Meeting with like-minded individuals on a weekly basis can help you build resiliency and stay focused on achieving your goals. Finding employment can take over 16 weeks, and even the most focused individuals who invest eight hours daily in researching, networking, and applying for relevant jobs need support to stay focused. Having a mentor or coach who can give you feedback on your resumé and interview skills can also help you to be productive and achieve success in the best possible time frame. For example, Manitoba Start offers free career planning and

employment preparation services to new immigrants. Be confident about the skills and experience you have to offer an employer. Make a plan for your job search and then stick to your plan. Connect with others who understand your experience and don’t be afraid to reach out for support. These steps will help you to push past any challenges and be successful in your job search. Are you a new immigrant looking for a job or planning your career in Manitoba?
