A Maze In Snow They survived the snow maze! Lory & Elton Villamin, Lorraine Rancha and Mark Mejica and kids walked out of the snow maze exit with smiles on their faces. The snow maze was built to become the largest snow maze in the world, according to Guiness World Records. Official measurement is expected to happen in early February. Manitoba made “A Maze In Snow” ready for Guinness World Record

T

he snow maze believed to be the largest in the world is now open to the public. Dubbed as “A Maze in Snow,” the unique creation is located on a farm in St. Adolphe, Manitoba, about 30 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

According to maze designer and co-owner Clint Masse, the work is their family’s winter offering to the public looking for a great way to spend an afternoon outdoors. The challenge is to navigate the maze from one end

to the other and to search for the five small fires burning inside the labyrinth. Masse added that their creation is larger than the 1,696-square-metre maze at Fort William Historical Park in Thunder

Bay, Ont. which is officially listed by the Guinness World Records as the largest snow maze in existence. The official measurement for “A Maze In Snow” will have to wait until early February.

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

W

hen Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the island of Homonhon in Samar on the feast day of Saint Lazarus of Bethany in 1521, he named the group of islands Las Islas de San Lazaro in honor of Saint Lazarus. Twentytwo years later in 1543, Ruy Lopez de Villalobos reached the same islands and named them Las Islas Felipinas in honor of the Prince of Asturias, the then Philip II of Spain. But Spanish colonization didn’t start until 1565 when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi became the first Governor General of the Spanish East Indies, which included Las Islas Felipinas (The Philippine Islands) and other Pacific islands. In 1571, Legazpi named Manila the capital of the Spanish East Indies. To populate the Philippine Islands with Hispanic people, he attracted them from Nueva Espana (New Spain), which is now Mexico, by giving them land ownership. Most of them came without families. Needless to say, these single men intermarried with native women. In my article, “The Landed and the Landless” (October 21, 2005), I wrote: “Land ownership, the Filipinos’ ultimate dream, has been the exclusive domain of the rich. Truly, ‘land ownership’ separates the rich from the poor — the landed from landless. “Land ownership for the rich has its beginning when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, upon colonizing the Philippines, instituted the Encomienda system. He divided the archipelago into large parcels and assigned each parcel to a favored Spaniard for administration and care. Encomienda, which means ‘to entrust,’ was adopted in Spain to reduce the abuses of forced labor. It was implemented in Spanish America and the Philippines to take care of the economic and spiritual welfare of the natives.

However, its benevolent purpose was circumvented and abused by the Spanish grantees — the ‘encomenderos.’ They collected tribute from the natives. Pretty soon the tribute became rents to powerful landlords and the natives became share tenants. In the end, the natives became virtual slaves of the encomenderos. In 1674, the Spanish Crown abolished the Encomienda system in all of its colonies. However, for more than 100 years after its abolition, it remained in effect in the Philippines. “The Encomienda system evolved into the Hacienda system. Land grants were given to the ‘hacenderos’ – ‘Filipinos’ (pure Spanish), ‘mestizos’ (mixed Spanish and native ‘indio’), and the favored families (the ‘indio’ elite). The hacenderos expanded their influence in all sectors of the economy. They became the political masters, second only to the Spanish masters. “When Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States at the Treaty of Paris in 1898, the Americans were precluded from touching the Friar lands because the treaty bound the US to protect the land owned by religious orders. When Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo established the first republic in 1899, he promised to confiscate large estates particularly the Friar lands. But that did not materialize because he spent his time fighting the Americans until he was captured and forced to pledge allegiance to the new masters. “During the commonwealth period under American colonial rule, the Rural Program Administration, created in March 1939, provided for the purchase and lease of haciendas and their sale and lease to tenants. However, the tenants were so poor, they simply could not buy the land they were farming. “When the Philippines gained its independence from

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Colonialism from within the United States in 1946, the hacenderos had complete control of the economy. They also became the political masters of the new republic. They constituted the new aristocracy and the oligarchy, all bundled into an exclusive class. “The new Philippine government grappled with the problems of land ownership. Numerous agrarian reforms were instituted. During the presidency of Ramon Magsaysay, former HUK dissidents and landless farmers were resettled and given land ownership. His untimely death stopped the program.” Communist insurgency Today, Philippine society is still divided between the landed and the landless. Large segments of the rural population are still poor and landless. They work for the landed – the hacenderos. But many of them look up to the insurgents for deliverance. It did not then come as a surprise that the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its military wing, the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) thrive because of their toehold in the rural areas where dissidence is common and unemployment high. They have been successful in attracting young men and women into the ranks of insurgents that have been at war with the government since the Philippines gained independence in 1946. In fact, they’re the only communist insurgency that exists in the world today. Recently, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order No. 70, which ordered the creation of a national task force that would seek to “end local communist armed conflict.” The EO reads, “There is a need to create a national task force that will provide an efficient mechanism and structure for the implementation of the whole-of-nation approach to aid in the realization of the collective aspiration of the Filipino people to attain inclusive and sustainable peace. Towards this end, the Government shall prioritize and harmonize the delivery of basic services and social development packages in conflict-affected areas and -vulnerable communities, facilitate societal inclusivity, and

ensure active participation of all sectors of society in the pursuit of the country’s peace agenda.” The President shall chair the task force, while the National Security Adviser shall serve as vice-chair. While it’s commendable that Duterte has finally focused on ending the communist insurgency that has been taking a high toll on the social and economic agenda of the government, this author believes that there is one element missing in this “whole-of-nation” approach to achieve peace and prosperity. Social Justice It’s interesting to note that what made the then Secretary of Defense Magsaysay successful in breaking the back of the Huk communist movement was his “Land for the landless” program, which by the way, was “borrowed” from the Huks’ own slogan, “Land for the Landless.” For each insurgent who surrendered his weapon, the government gave him a carabao, a plow, and

several hectares of arable land in Mindanao. Within two years, the communist insurgency was defeated. The anti-Huk campaign propelled Magsaysay to national fame. In 1953 he ran for president against his former boss, President Elpidio Quirino, and won with the support of 68.9% of the voters. The social problem that Legazpi imposed on the “indios” in 1571 still exists today -- two classes of people – the landed and the landless, the rich and the poor. The Philippines is still a rural and agricultural society. And this situation provides a climate for dissatisfaction and resentment against the ruling elite. And that’s the reason why the country is still fighting an insurgency that seeks social justice, which by the way, was enshrined in the Constitution. But the old colonialism is no longer around. It’s the presentday colonialism from within that hinders our progress. Indeed, the elite today are the new encomenderos.

Remembering early local elections

W

hen the regular Philippine government was restored in 1946 following the declaration on July 4th of the country’s independence elections were called in the following year. In the early years, the Philippine National Railways(PNR) railroad track served as the demarcation line marking the separation of the two congressional districts in the province of Pampanga. In the early sixties there were only 104 congressional districts, and over a period of time the number ballooned to more that 200 excluding the party lists members. And if I may add members of congress then were real congressmen. No 'hao siao' congressmen. Most were brilliant, well studied and eloquent speakers. I always wanted to recall this period in my life. I was an ordinary promdi student in the early sixties at the University of Sto. Tomas, and most of the time running

out of money even for jeepney fares. I loved going to the Manila Grand Opera house where after the movie the theatrical shows featuring known singers of those years, complete with drama and dancing gave me the thrill.Easily getting penniless, I will walk from my rented room in Zurbaran street up to Philippine Congress, some six or seven kilometers away, to watch congressmen in action. Our representatives then were Emilio Cortez and Juanita Lumanlan Nepomuceno. They were in the company of Florencio Abad of Batanes, Manuel Cases of La Union, Floro Crisologo of Ilocos Sur, Leonardo Perez of Nueva Viscaya, Teodulo Natividad of Bulacan, Justo Albert of Manila, Justiniano Montano of Cavite, Felix Fuentebella of Camarines Sur, Manuel Soza of Cebu, Vincenso Sagun of Zamboanga Del Sur, Salih Ututalum of Sulu and many more class legislators.

They were Pampanga's pride. In the rolls of earlier congress, the congressmen sent in the lower house were no bench warmers. Some of the names will include Jose Fausto of Sta. Ana, Eligio Lagman of Guagua, Luis Taruc of San Luis, Amado Yuzon of Guagua and Diosdado Macapagal of Lubao. They brought honor to the province. After the war, the governor of the province was Urbano Dizon. He was defeated in a three cornered contest. His opponents were Jose B. Lingad and Emilio Cortez. Lingad unseated Dizon. And during those years, the congressman in the first district was Amado Yuzon, a poet laureate and an English professor at the Far Eastern University. In his stint in congress, Yuzon delivered a privilege speech in Shakespearean style that awed fellow members and the people in the gallery. That's how good he was. And former Huk Supremo Luis Taruc represented the second district. Both were removed from congress because of their strong stand against the Bell Trade Act, Parity Rights and Military Bases Agreement. But were able to retake their seats after sometime. (And that’s another story to be told). Pampanga Governor Jose B. Lingad called on a cumpare and a cabalen from Lubao Diosdado Macapagal who was then a consul in Washington DC in the United States and asked him to run against Yuzon. Macapagal hurried home and without hesitation started

planning his strategies with supporters like Marciano Dizon of Porac, Brigido Valencia of Guagua, Jose Pelayo of Angeles and few more others. Macapagal was a zarsuelista and an eloquent speaker. Whenever he spoke the answer is silence of a big crowd and a thunderous applause at the end of his campaign speech. People from the second district travelled kilometers in their carts just to be part of the crowd wherever the Cong Dadong and Tatang Mado

conducted their political rallies. Those were the years. Macapagal defeated Yuzon. And Macapagal never looked back till he became president besting re-electionist Carlos P. Garcia of Bohol. Editor’s Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga.

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros

One nation under God

I

was caught unguarded when I came across this piece of a reminder from the facebook page, and decided to share with our readers. Minister Joe Wright had summed up many valid truths about our lives in this millennium with his opening prayer at the Senate in Kansas City. One might recall that religion is now in questions especially in public schools, and public forum, and to be exact at the opening of the Senate Session in Kansas City. In many public schools, Lord’s Prayer is no longer recited by the pupils and students, and in some government forums, Christians symbols are prohibited as some new immigrants, demanding fairness and pluralism especially on beliefs. One time, the former Australian Prime Minister Julie Gillards in her speech on immigrants in 2012, says: “Immigrants, not Australian, must adapt.Take it or leave it.” And she continues: “ This is our country, our land, our lifestyle, and we will allow you enjoy opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our Pledge, our Christian beliefs, or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great Australian freedom “The Right To Leave”. If you aren’t happy here, then leave. We did not force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.”

For our readers, share with us what happened in Kansas City. This interesting prayer was given in Kansas, USA, at the opening session of their Senate. It seems prayer still upsets some people. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard: "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says: "Woe to those who call evil good", but that is exactly what we have done. * We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. * We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism. * We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. * We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle. * We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. * We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. * We have killed our unborn and called it choice. * We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. * We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. * We have abused power and

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

called it politics. * We have embezzled public funds and called it essential expenses. * We have insitutionalised bribery and called it sweets of office. * We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. *We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. * We have ridiculed the timehonored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh GOD, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!" The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea. With the LORD'S help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and WHOLEHEARTEDLY become our desire so that we again can be called "ONE NATION UNDER GOD." Would these narratives define some of the alarming signs in our lives today?

y mom bought for me my first-ever Star Wars action figure in 1983—an R2-D2, after the showing of Return of the Jedi—the last installment to the film series original trilogy—that year, which we saw at Quad in Makati. I was 12; I was in Grade 5. We got the R2-D2 three and three quarter inches’ figure at a hobby shop at a strip mall called Goldcrest in the area of the now Ayala Malls in Makati, Metro Manila. The special-toys shop was called Nova Fontana. That little place had been a childhood paradise for me every weekend and even on countless after-school strolling moments with a few friends and classmates during those days. Of the toys that I got from Nova Fontana, only a handful I was able to keep to this day. Yes, they are just plastic toys, but they carry for me magical memories of my childhood and youth—stories of old that I enjoy sharing with my 10-year-old son Evawwen, who would often

get wide-eyed while listening to them. The Last Leaf Here are some of those very figures that I bought at Nova Fontana in the 1980s: Squidhead, Nikto, Death Star Droid, Clash of the Titans’ Charon, Klaatu, Bib Fortuna, FX-7, R2-D2, Tie Fighter Piot, Imperial Stormtrooper, AT-AT Driver, Logray, Chewbacca, Yoda, Dengar, Ugnaught, Bossk, 4-Lom, and Boba Fett. What about you? For sure, you also have lots of toy memories! You may email us at elfideas102@yahoo.com your own childhood-toy recollection and we will feature it here in Filipino Journal. So far, the best collectibletoys shop in Winnipeg is Cobra Collectibles, located at 555 Sargent Ave. The store sells both used and new items that include merchandise from Star Wars, Transformers, He-man & the Masters of the Universe, and many, many more.

Winnipeg Happy Campers Christmas Party

A

gemma is a bud of a flower that hasn’t blossomed yet. Its blossoming is awaited with anticipation by nature lovers for them to savour gemma’s fragrance and beauty. Gemma is shy and has not yet developed its self-confidence to blossom without the help of the sunshine and other natural elements. My name is Gemma, and I am finally ready to blossom after 77 years of questioning myself if I am enough. Being an illegitimate daughter of a Catholic priest, I was bullied, shunned, and abhorred by lots of people while growing up in a small town of Casiguran, Sorsogon, Philippines. Consequently, this bullying has had a lasting impact on me as a child, student, and as an adult. On several occasions, I had to tell lies who my father was, sometimes saying he’s a doctor, a lawyer, accountant, or any occupation I could think of. I thought I was unlovable and unworthy of any one’s attention. I compensated for this lack of self-worth by making sure I was always the top student from Grade one till university. For therapeutic purposes, I wrote in my journals my pent-up feelings and emotions but never showed them to anybody. It was 2 years ago when my son, Hernando, a computer technician,

discovered my collection and urged me to publish them. So with so much hesitation, I have ventured to publish my collection of poems this year. I would like to invite my readers and friends to my book launch with the information below. Please e-mail me if you want a book reserved: gdalayoan@gmail.com The Book Launch will be held on Sunday, February 3,2019 at 2:00 p.m- 3:30 p.m at McNally Robinson Bookstore at 4000 Grant Park. After the reading and signing, refreshments will be served. Please come and enjoy poetry and the company of other book lovers and the beautiful venue. Thank you so much.

With more than nineteen family members, the Winnipeg Happy Campers held a Christmas Party last December 29, 2018 at Brookvale Community Centre. There were lots of fun, games, food, prizes and live music from the teen/children dance presentations. Exchanging gifts, as a part of the Christmas

celebration, were full of excitements and surprises. Winnipeg Happy Campers started as a group in 2007 and still growing. Founders include Carrie Barroga, Tess Gopez, Grace Vergel and Julie Saul. The members include Barroga, Gopez, Saul, Vergel, Sevilla, Joson, Lee, Deluz,

Espares, Pingul, Mirabel, Ajero and more. The Winnipeg Happy Campers are expecting more fun for their camping in July.

he Philippines is one of the top countries producing child pornography material globally (UNICEF, 2018). This 20th of January, many in the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic country, will be celebrating the devotion to the Santo NiĂąo (the child Jesus). As a tradition, it is also considered to be the day of the children. It is the perfect timing to start the conversation in our community about a major problem back home where children mostly 12 years and below, boys and girls and some under 2 years old, are victimized through online sexual exploitation. A roundtable discussion advocacy campaign organized by International Justice Mission (IJM) will be held on January 21st from 7:00 to 8:30pm at PCCM to tackle the very disturbing cybersex trafficking destroying the lives of many specially the innocent children. Based on statistics, Philippines is among the countries with the highest number of victims. Canada ranks as among the three countries with the top number of perpetrators (source:cybertip.ca). It is high time for Canadians and Filipinos to work together to put an end to

this nightmare haunting many of the children back home and other developing countries. The roundtable discussion panelists will be led by Sam Inocencio, the IJM National director in the Philippines. Sam is a lawyer for IJM Manila since 2003. He has helped many women and children victims seek and receive justice. Sam has vast experience advocating for survivors in the courtroom, designing and executing nationallevel advocacy plans with government agencies and securing

unprecedented partnerships with the Filipino government. The other panelists are myself, Joy Smith (Former Member of Parliament and Founder/President of the Joy Smith Foundation), Sgt. Rob Collins (Missing Persons Coordinator in Regina Police), Catherine Chabbert (Senior Child Protection Analyst from Cybertip. ca), and a Winnipeg RCMP representative. IJM secures justice for victims of slavery, online sexual exploitation of children and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, community mobilizers, and aftercare professionals work with local governments to ensure victim rescue, to prosecute perpetrators and to strengthen the community & civic factors that promote functioning public justice systems.

With Pastor Victor Cuarto (a 204 Neighbourhood Watch volunteer) and David Pollendine (the IJM Director of Development & Mobilization for Manitoba and Saskatchewan) during our initial meeting about the anti-cybersex trafficking advocacy campaign.

The countdown to Fried Chicken Fest is on: Are Your Stretchy Pants Ready?

Fried Chicken Fest returns to Winnipeg this coming Sunday with the ultimate fan-driven competition to find the best fried chicken in the city. From January 20 to 27, restaurants across the city and in Stony Mountain and Selkirk will serve up their best fried chicken creation to eager food lovers who will try to get out and try as many dishes as they can and vote for their favourite. There are 19 restaurants signed up for the second annual event and organizers are excited to see the response from fans on social media and regulars on the Winnipeg food scene. “Winnipeggers love food and competition. This event is a perfect way to do both. Fried Chicken Fest has Winnipeg's best chefs showing off their creativity and welcoming excited food lovers into their restaurants. Yes, it's cold, but Fried Chicken Week is a fun way to encourage people to get out and experience the best of Winnipeg’s food scene with friends and family,” Chef Allan Pineda, co-organizer of Fried Chicken Fest stated.

This year participating restaurants had to enter with a fried chicken concept not usually found on their menu. Fried Chicken Fest lovers are in for a treat this way-- the creativity and flavour profiles offered this week are unique to this food festival. Fried chicken lovers should be mapping out their restaurant stops to maximize flavour potential— from the spices to the crunch, from the creativity to the presentation— which restaurant will win the taste buds and hearts of foodies? Fried Chicken Fest goers are encouraged to try as many dishes as they can and vote for their favourite. The current title holder is the Oak & Grain at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites at 1800 Wellington Avenue. This year's winner be announced shortly after January 27. Created by Susie Erjavec Parker and Allan Pineda, Fried Chicken Fest’s goal is to create something tasty and fun during the otherwise dark, cold month of January. Susie is the principal of SPARKER Strategy Group and has extensive restaurant and food marketing experience. Chef

Allan is the creator of Baon Manila Nights and produces pop-ups around the globe. They roughed out Fried Chicken Fest over a restaurant table in the heart of Winnipeg and the rest is history. “We’re delighted to bring Fried Chicken Fest back, and we expect Fried Chicken Fest to only get bigger and better,” said Susie Erjavec Parker. About Fried Chicken Fest From January 20 to 27, 2019, Winnipeg restaurants will create a signature fried chicken dish just for Fried Chicken Fest. Fried chicken lovers of all ages from anywhere in the city and surrounding areas are encouraged to taste and rank these delicious creations and vote for their favorite one at FriedChickenFest.ca. Hyundai Kona wins AJAC’s Festival du Voyageur Best Small Utility for 2019 (of the Traveller) 2019

T

he all-new Hyundai Kona today has been recognized as 2019’s Best Small Utility vehicle by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). After making its international debut in Summer 2018, the Kona quickly claimed top market share in the subcompact SUV segment and has sold more than 14,400 units in Canada to date. With a strong, impactful design and uncompromised individuality, the Kona is Hyundai’s first entry into the fast-growing subcompact SUV segment. The vehicle’s new platform and enhanced driving

dynamics resonated incredibly well with Canadians, quickly making it the hottest selling allnew vehicle in Canada in its inaugural year. As a category winner, Kona is now on the final list of contenders for the 2019 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year title to be announced on February 14, 2019. The Kona serves as Hyundai’s answer to rapidly changing customer preferences towards technology, style, and flexibility. The vehicle was designed with the needs of urban, active customers in mind, boasting a spacious interior and best-in-class driving in the subcompact SUV segment. The Kona blends exceptional fuel efficiency with a fun driving experience, delivering power and performance levels that are not often found in vehicles in its segment. “It’s been an incredible first year for the Kona and we’re

thrilled to be recognized for our innovative, industry-leading work in this segment,” said Don Romano, President and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. “Expanding our range of SUVs to best meet the needs of Canadians is a top priority for Hyundai, and being acknowledged as leaders in the category shows that we’re absolutely moving in the right direction.” With an all-new subcompact SUV platform developed for the Kona, Hyundai looks to set new standards for the category. The vehicle’s chassis is engineered to be rigid, topped with a lightweight body for dynamic driving performance and a comfortable ride. The powertrain layout is optimized to create a compact platform capable of incorporating the car’s four-wheel-drive system while maintaining interior space.

To Criticize or Not to Criticize (On the Importance of SocialMedia Commentaries) Marami ang mahilig bumatikos sa mga taong tinaguriang critical thinkers sa world wide web of the Internet. "Can the general gullibility and shortsightedness of the so-

called masses still be mended if not eradicated?" I think yes. It is possible. Although that will really take a longer time to achieve. What people like me are doing regularly and consistently— discussing issues and sharing our viewpoints on social media—is instrumental in shaping thoughts and perceptions and influencing others to become critical thinkers. Whether you are a journalist, a blogger, or a mere netizen—if you have something critical to say— you have the right to express your thoughts, especially if these are well-thought-of, well-considered, and well-meant. That is why I abhor the socalled smart shaming. Many detractors say that writers and thinkers are useless and not really helping society because they are not out in the streets wielding placards and hurling stones, but instead they are behind their keyboards typing away pieces of

their minds and their visions of a better society. But, I don't mind. I will just keep on expressing my opinions and suggestions. Because, I believe that—as opposed to the cliché “action speaks louder than words”—sensible proposals and valid observations are actually more potent and make greater and longer-lasting impact on the collective psyche of people at large. They are, in the end, more useful than the reckless actions, band-aid solutions, and violent activism of shortsighted and selfserving community leaders and their minions.
