The politics behind the ‘Ilocos Six’
I
n Philippine politics, it’s hard to determine who the real enemies are. Their enemies today could be their allies tomorrow or vice versa. Which reminds me of Benjamin Disraeli’s popular mantra: “We have no permanent friends. We have no permanent enemies. We just have permanent interests.” But the Ilocano psyche goes beyond that mantra. To Ilocanos, blood is thicker than water, but politics transcend blood relationships. So don’t be misled when brothers face each other in an election. The truth is: no matter who wins, power remains within the family. And that’s to keep others from getting into their “exclusive” domain.
Take the Ortega political clan for example. They’ve dominated politics in La Union for the past century. They have occupied the governor’s office, won congressional seats and provincial board seats, served as city and town mayors, and sat on city and town councils. They may be running against each other in these elections, but they remain “family.” The Marcoses of Ilocos Norte are now in the same situation. After three generations in politics since World War II, they control the political pendulum in the province. Their patriarch, the late President Ferdinand Marcos, occupied the presidency for more than 20 years. When the
OPINIONS info@FilipinoJournal.com
People Power Revolution of 1986 deposed him, the family went into exile in Hawaii. But in the 1990’s they were able to come back and eventually, one by one, run for office. Daughter Imee Marcos is now the governor of Ilocos Norte while son Ferdinand “Bongbong” Jr. won a Senate seat; however, he lost in his vice presidential bid last year. The matriarch Imelda Marcos won the 2nd District congressional seat where her late husband began his political career. Third generation Marcoses In May 2015, Imee officially notified the Commission of Elections that she was a resident of Laoag. In September that same year, the three sons of Bongbong – Ferdinand “Sandro” Alexander III, 23, Joseph Simon, 22, and Vincent, 20 – registered as voters of Laoag City, claiming their dad’s house in Barangay Suba as their residence. Imee’s youngest son, Matthew Joseph Manotoc, 27, ran for the Ilocos Norte provincial board in 2016 and won. It's interesting to note that Manotoc topped the race edging Ria Christina Fariñas into second place. Ria Christina is Rudy Fariñas’ daughter. Manotoc’s lead over Ria Christina was of significant importance, which has raised a political red flag in the province. Rudy Fariñas is the patriarch of the powerful Fariñas family that had dominated politics in the 1st District for over half a century. With the province split into two districts, one controlled by the Fariñas clan and the other by the Marcos clan, the two clans managed to coexist peacefully since the 1980s when the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos ruled the country. In 1980, Rudy Fariñas, whose family owns and operates Fariñas Trans, one of the oldest fleets of northern Luzon buses, was elected mayor of Laoag, making him one the youngest mayors during his time. In 1988, Fariñas ran for Ilocos Norte governor and won in a landslide. He was reelected in 1992 and 1995. He served as governor for 10 years. After that, he ran and won in 1998 as the 1st District’s representative. He served for only one three-year term. Fariñas’ alliance with the Marcoses lasted until 2007
when Fariñas was defeated by a political neophyte, Michael Marcos Keon. Keon was backed by the Marcoses, after all Keon was a first cousin of Imee. But three years later, in 2010, Fariñas and Imee resumed their alliance. Imee tried to stop Keon from running for reelection but Keon wouldn’t withdraw. It was then that Imee decided to run against Keon. She won and it prevented the Marcos-Fariñas alliance from disintegrating. However, the alliance didn’t last too long. Ilocos Six Last year, a scandal erupted in Laoag City over the missing P85 million from the city treasury. The rift between the erstwhile allies, Imee Marcos and Rudy Fariñas, came to a head when the House committee on good government and public accountability started to investigate the alleged misuse of province’s tobacco funds in 2012. It was alleged that that P66.4 million worth of buses and multi-cabs were purchased without public bidding. The House committee summoned six Ilocos Norte officials – called the “Ilocos Six” -- to answer questions concerning the missing funds. The officials showed up but they refused to answer questions. This prompted the House committee to order them detained. If they continue to refuse to answer questions, they could be detained until the end of the current Congress in June 2019. Their boss, Governor Imee Marcos was furious! She lambasted House Majority Floor Leader Fariñas and dared him to bring the fight back to Ilocos Norte. She also sought relief from the Supreme Court. At a press conference, Imee blamed her political rivalry with Fariñas for triggering the House investigation. It's interesting to note that both Imee and Fariñas will be termed out in 2019. Which makes one wonder what their political plans are in the 2019 midterm election? Imee could run for Fariñas’ 1st District seat, after all she’s now officially a resident of Laoag City, which is in the 1st District. Bongbong’s eldest son Sandro is now primed to run for office in the province. Why not the governorship that Imee

would be vacating? Bongbong’s second son, Joseph Simon would be in a position to run for mayor of Laoag City against incumbent Chevylle Fariñas. And Bongbong’s youngest son Vincent would qualify to run against Laoag City’s incumbent vice-mayor and Chevylle’s husband, Michael Fariñas. That would certainly stack up the cards against the Fariñas clan right in their own backyard. Meanwhile, Bongbong’s electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo is now before the Supreme Court convened as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET). If Bongbong wins and takes over the vice presidency, it would certainly make the Marcos clan the preeminent political body in Ilocos Norte. And this could cause the downfall of the Fariñas clan. Rudy is rumored to be vying to be the next Ombudsman after the retirement of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales in 2018. Rudy also wants his daughter Ria Christina Fariñas to succeed him in the 1st District in 2019. Ria Christina is currently serving as a Member of the Ilocos Norte Provincial Board. However, she gained some national recognition when she was elected as the new president of the Provincial Board Members League of the Philippines (PBMLP) last February 28. With Imee terming out in 2019, she might run for a Senate seat. Where else is she going to go? And with Rudy Fariñas turning out too, he might run for a Senate seat. It would certainly be an interesting face-off between the two former allies, now bitter adversaries. Or, Rudy could instead run for governor, which might be easier to win than a Senate seat if Sandro Marcos wouldn’t run against him. But there will always be someone from the Marcos camp who would challenge him. Matthew Joseph Manotoc comes to mind. And if he runs, he could give Fariñas a good run for his money. Which makes one wonder: Is the “Ilocos Six” scandal being used to achieve a political end? Or is it to punish the corrupt? Machiavelli lives!

SOPA : An Edge with Canadian Job Preparedness – Part 2 A Story from 204FM Community by Leila Castro
Mila with SOPA students from the Philippines.
F
or the first part of this article, Mila explained what SOPA (Settlement Online Pre -Arrival) program is, and why a large percentage of Filipinos fail to get their desired job in due time, compared to non-Filipinos that has a success rate of 90%. In this second part of the article, Mila shares to us the preparations that one needs to make in order to have the preparedness for the Canadian job market. With the goal of getting the related job within 3 months of setting foot here, what are the prearrival preparations one should be doing? “These need not be in sequence. SOPA will assist you for 1 and 2, 1. Your first step is know what is you passion. Your passion is the work that is in line with your skills and experiences. 2. Research what is in the labor market in Canada, so you will know where to sell yourself. Look for your employability chances. Do your own ‘search’, don’t just ask other people. ‘Search’ means looking at indeed, monster, other employment websites, manitoba government jobs.ca, also on hidden job market (or not posted), and recruitment agencies. You should have all these in your list. And you will always go back to your passion or career goal. For the hidden job market, list down at least 10 companies offering positions related to what you do, look at their websites or call them if there are career opportunites (even if you are still in the Philippines). Check if there are opportunities posted, if none then you can get in touch with them. Call the company staff, the receptionist will answer, introduce yourself and your intention, get the name of the person, if possible ask to talk to the hiring person. One gap why a Filipino will not go to the extent of making such call, is the person is “afraid”; and another gap is the language. If
the staff says, “yes we have this position, you just have to apply online.” So those will confirm that there are available positions in the company. 3. Enroll in SOPA. If you already are in the medical stage, then you may enroll at SOPA. Visa office sends the invitation via email to the immigrant to enroll to the pre-arrival services. There is a link in the IRCC website in the information provided by the VISA office, it is suggested that you avail of the pre-arrival services. Every immigrant receives this. Though this is not mandatory, because all pre-arrival services are actually not mandatory. It is the choice of the immigrant if he or she wants to be aware about the settlement and employment in Manitoba. For immigrants bound to Manitoba, there is SOPA and the Immigrant Center pre-arrival services. What is unique about SOPA are the courses which focus on employment and knowing about Canadian workplace. You will know everything about working in Canada, such as what to expect about your salary, what are your taxes. Normally you get to know these things only when you arrive here. There is SOPA for the whole of Canada, but its program is province specific.” SOPA is taken online for 6 weeks. It is about 6 to 7 hours per week. Almost every immigrant I know speaks about Manitoba Start. What is Manitoba Start program? Does it duplicate SOPA? “Manitoba Start is the entry program of the Employment Solution Agency for the youth 19 to 29 years old. Actually there are other agencies that also offer the same program. The Entry Program of Altered Minds is also the same as Manitoba Start. SOPA and Manitoba Start compliment each other, as a PRE and POST arrival program. Although one of the free online course of SOPA which is the Job Search strategies is almost the
Let's get social
same as the 2 weeks employment workshop provided by Manitoba Start to new immigrants that arrive in Winnipeg. If a new immigrant enrolled and completed the SOPA Job Search Strategies course before arrival, she/he will directly be referred to Manitoba Start to meet with a career coach on his/her employment needs after arrival. The new immigrant will not attend anymore the 2 weeks workshop from Manitoba Start. Aside from the referral to Manitoba start before the immigrant arrives, we also connect our SOPA students to their regulatory body, for example if the profession is regulated. We also connect them with relevant settlement organizations and recruitment agencies.” How did you come here, Mila, as immigrant? What was your unforgettable experience as new immigrant? “We arrived in July of 2014 under the federal skilled worker program. We've chosen Manitoba due to its stable economy compared to other provinces. I was a social worker in the Philippines at the municipal social welfare office in Itogon, Benguet handling cases of domestic abuse and representing them to the local court. I also worked with the elderly. In 2008, my kids and I joined my husband in Singapore as permanent residents. In Singapore, I was able to find a job as social worker dealing with youth at risk for 6 months at Andrew and Grace Home, before I moved to Lakeside Family Services handling cases of high profile inmates at Singapore Prison Service and providing counselling on Family Violence. In Canada, my first job was a Settlement Worker at Salvation Army, Barbara Mitchelle Family Resource Centre, assisting new immigrants in the St Vital area. In sept 2015, I was hired as the Intake Counsellor for Settlement Online Pre Arrival (SOPA). I am also a registered Social Worker with the Manitoba College of Social Workers and a member of the Canadian Association of Social Workers. It wasn’t easy to get a job related to my field and I needed to broaden my awareness about social services in Manitoba and understand the family law. I got my first job after 8 months as I needed to wait for a space for my son in a childcare. But those unemployed months were productively spent through volunteering in the community, connecting with our local associations and attending free workshops that were relevant to my skills. Roselyn Advincula and Perla Javate were the people whom I met and introduced me to community activities.” To contact Mila, you may email her at milagrosd@ amimanitoba.com.

204 Neighbourhood Watch: Responding as One Community By Leila Castro
E
ver since we officially launched the 204 Neighbourhood Watch three weeks ago, we have so far patrolled 2 areas and done playgrounds cleanup twice. The number of volunteers connecting and showing up in our activities is also growing. We are happy to see people from diverse cultures expressing their support and appreciation. More than the hype, there is indeed a need for all of us to unite and do something for the community. I am sharing here what some of our active volunteers say about their experiences and realizations with being part of the 204 Neighbourhood Watch, and what drives them to continue volunteering. Lito Urbano “I have been in Canada for 11 years. The activity is good for our community, especially for our sons and daughters because it teaches them to take opportunities to do the right thing for our community. My experience cleaning the park was good, because I knew I was doing something good for the environment. I will always volunteer for the amazing opportunity. Thanks 204 Neighbourhood Watch!” Lorenz Cinco “Everyone is dreaming to have a peaceful and safe place to live. This is what inspires me to continue volunteering with 204 Neighborhood Watch. This is possible through our collaborative effort and sincere cooperation.” Ever since we officially launched the 204 Neighbourhood Watch three weeks ago, we have

Kathy Chionglo “What inspires me to continue volunteering with 204 Neighbourhood Watch? First of all, I would like to express how together and fun the co-volunteers are in 204NW! We are like a one happy family. 1. I feel that 204 NW

is a movement that helps neighbours watch out for neighbours; 2. I feel that 204 NW is a movement that combats crime in the most effective way -before it starts- by reducing the opportunities for crime to occur; 3. It strengthens my ties to the community, being exposed to people with common interests, neighbourhood resources, fun and fulfilling activities; 4. Sense of pride and identity!;5. I feel that 204 NW is a growing movement and I would encourage anyone interested in volunteering should consider 204NW. Volunteering is a two-way street. It can benefit you and your family such as the cause you choose to help! By the way, free Bakerite Pandesals, Tim’s doughnuts at iba pa during our meetings and patrollings, are always available whenever you feel hungry hehehe.” Arlene Diosomito I’ve always wanted to be part of a group that helps the
community. Since I was a kid in the Philippines, I’ve always wanted to be part of something that will help people and make a difference in the community. However, since we have a family business where I spent most of my time after school and my parents are very protective of us, I was not able to fulfill it. Then came a time when I got married and have my own business, I started to help homeless children and their family by giving them food and clothing. I also helped the less fortunate by providing them salo-salo at my store during Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Then me and my husband came to Canada. It was not easy to start in Canada, so I had put aside doing these things in the meantime, while I focused on working… work work work to provide for my family and of course to survive in Canada. And then came the blessing of a good life to us.. me and my husband started helping people again and donating to charity. When I saw Ate Leila Castro’s post about 204 Neighbourhood Watch, I immediately signed up to be a member. At last a group where I can help the community! It also helps that I personally know Ate Leila who is a foster parent like me. I feel more comfortable joining the group.. and I feel her sincerity and good heart as the founder of the group. As for my experience with the playground clean up, I have to admit my heart was hurting when I saw all the broken bottles and drugs baggies scattered around the playground. I can’t imagine that there are people without conscience who do such a thing at the expense of the innocent children. I initially thought that such pitiful condition of the playground is a story that exists only on Facebook, until I saw one. Our primary concern is the welfare of the children playing in the playground.. While picking up the broken glasses, I am thinking of all the kids that got hurt while playing in the playground.. This
motivated me to become more active in volunteering for 204 Neighbourhood Watch. I made the right decision to join the group because it directly helps the community, it is an opportunity to get involved.” The 204 Neighbourhood Watch will not fly without committed volunteers like Kathy, Lito, Lorenz and Arlene. The streets they patrolled were not even the neighbourhood where they live, and the playgrounds they cleaned up were not the place frequented by their children. But their hearts responded to the urgent call to act as one community. We are receiving more and more requests from people to patrol in their areas. We need more volunteers, join the 204 Neighbourhood Watch fb group, or email me at leilacastro.ca@gmail. com.
On July 5, 204 Neighbourhood Watch did a clean up of 2 playgrounds at Maples. During the first patrolling, 2 young girls complained to the volunteers that broken bottles are scattered everywhere on their playground.
The volunteers enjoying snacks and water break.

On June 26, the 204 Neighbourhood Watch did its first patrolling. It was joined by Bear Clan, which also provides guidance to the group.
Maj Gonsalves and Arlene Diosomito. Before doing the first patrolling, 204 Neighbourhood Watch had no resources to begin with, but Arlene loaned to the group important logistics. She also donated consumable items that are essential to patrolling.
On July 10, the volunteers did another round of clean up on the playground at Maples.

Western Gold Rush, Golden Walleyes That Is
T
he majority of our readers reside in the great city of Winnipeg. For many of us, the occasional weekend escape of the hustle and bustle of urban life involves packing the coolers into our vehicles, loading the gear, and hitting the road for some outdoor fun. More often than not, the roads that are most travelled go either east, north, or south. While areas such as the Whiteshell, Northwest Ontario, St. Malo, Birds Hill, and the countless destinations that line Lake Winnipeg are tried and true fantastic places to visit,
the highways going west hold some less utilized gems that may surprise you. This season I’ve made a point to visit some lakes in the western part of the province that I have never fished before. Exploring new waters is always exciting and adds a new sense of adventure to the weekend trips. Half the fun is also checking out attractions and sights at the different towns that call these lakes their home waters. Catching a pile of fat walleyes at each lake is almost just a nice bonus.
Lake of the Prairies (Russell/ Roblin) A short while ago, I took the family out for a trip to Lake of the Prairies which lies very close to the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border on Hwy #16. I’ve fished this lake a couple of times before competing in tournaments. On this trip we stayed at the Russell Inn, mostly because they have a nice indoor pool and waterslide. Fishing wise, we took the boat out the first day and everyone caught a ton of walleyes and some spunky pike. The second day was super windy with whitecaps on the water so we fished from shore at the bottom of the Shellmouth dam. We got a few nice walleyes and a big pike here as well. Sidenote, it was pretty cool to talk to a good number of ‘kababayans’ who were working at the hotel and at various businesses in town. Oak Lake (Oak Lake Beach) On the way home from a tournament in Saskatchewan in May, Jeremy and I decided to fish this huge lake which were already going to pass by on the way home. We pulled into town late so we stayed at one of the handful of hotels in the nearby Hwy #1 town of Virden. Hitting the lake bright and early, we explored a few different areas and was surprised at how shallow the lake was never

finding a spot more than 9 feet deep. We ended up catching fat 18 to 21 inch walleyes all day in the midst of a ton of other boats and pontoons who were having a field day with all of the fish schooling in 5 feet of water. At the marina there were numerous shore anglers who proudly displayed their stringers of walleyes to us too. Oak Lake Provincial Park and other resorts are right in town which was full of very friendly people. Pelican Lake (Ninette) Very recently, the family and I competed at the Generation Next Angler Westman tournament on Pelican Lake a few hours down Hwy #2. Having never even seen this lake before, we were quite surprised at how scenic and large the lake is which lies at the bottom of a steep valley on all sides. Easily just as big if not

bigger than similarly sized Falcon Lake, we found that this lake was lined all around with great looking campgrounds, beaches, and beautiful cabins. The fishing was just okay in our boat but apparently we did not fish at the community hotspots as more than half of the teams in the field hammered them pretty good including numerous walleyes in the 23-26 inch range. Those are the largest bodies of water in the west, but there are more great places to visit such as Stephenfield Lake near Carman, Lake Minnewasta near Morden, Rock Lake, and several dams along the Assiniboine River starting at the Portage La Prairie Spillway. A little research online and looking over maps may just find you a new favourite place to fish, camp, or swim. “Go west young man, go west”

Were You an Atari Baby? by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
I
f you were a kid or a teenager in the late ’70s or the mid-’80s, then you were surely one of those who spent countless hours in that era playing Atari video games like Pac-man, Space Invaders, Pitfall!, Missile Command, Asteroids, and Galaxian. I myself belong also to that generation. I
still vividly remember how I and several classmates would spend after-school hours at our home or the house of another classmate to play such video games until our respective parents started looking for each one of us. And we did this even during school nights! So, don’t tell me that “kids nowadays…,” for even in the past decades, children and teenagers “just wanna have fun.” That is why I'm excited for the forthcoming new Atari console, named Ataribox, which, according to Atari, one of the original manufacturers of game consoles, would be released in the market soon. Apparently, the company is
(On ’80s Video Games)
still polishing every aspect of it; so, not much details are currently being divulged yet to the public. I'm just hoping that the joysticks that would come with Ataribox will be similar to the original ones, which had long and slender control sticks. I still have a well-functioning, and in good condition, Atari 2400 console (along with a good number of Atari video game cartridges), which I bought at a thrift shop several years ago. The only drawback for me was that it's not compatible (of course) with the new types of T.V.; I had to buy also a used analog television just so I could use the console. Considering the advancement
that the video-game technology has achieved over the years, the oldversion Atari games are comparably simple and could be dragging to play after several hours even to an original Atari fan like me. I play it only when I'm in a nostalgic mood or when my eight-year-old son, Evawwen, out of the blue, will take the fancy for playing Pac-man or Donkey Kong with me. After all, it remains an additional fun and leisure activity for '70s/'80s babies like me as well as their children.

Filipino culture on stage at Winnipeg Fringe Festival
The Places We Go is a live graphic novel and a story for everyone - a visually and theatrically charged portrayal of Winnipeg-Filipino culture about a young girl's desire to reunite with her mom. As a multimedia and newcreation work, The Places We Go will take you through Metro Manila following Grace as she attempts to raise enough money for the perfect gift - a plane ticket home for Nanay. Grace (Manila, Philippines) lives apart from her mother, Nanay (Winnipeg, Canada). The Places We Go provides an occasion for story telling, which reflects the history of migration in Canada and serious play around the current reality of long-distance relationships, family separation and the power of hope. Oro and Venzon – Venzon, a theatre artist, Oro, an illustrator and graphic artist – are thrilled to bring audiences a unique and innovative work to everyone who knows what it’s like to dream. About the Artists Hazel Venzon is a firstgeneration Canadian with Filipino ancestry who has spent the last seven years focusing her theatre arts practice towards the investigation of Canadian identity and migration. Her practice and

process for developing work involves listening to personal stories and igniting conversation with new Canadians. The personal stories and conversations are used as inspiration for her solo work and projects with communities. This research process parallels her personal journey to recognize her heritage. Venzon has come across stories from mothers and children who have endured familyseparation and the complex aftermath of reunification. It is through these stories that inspire Venzon and how they alter and impact Canadian culture and identity. David Oro is a Winnipeg artist, born and raised in Metro Manila Philippines, who migrated to Winnipeg at the age of seventeen. Migration has, undoubtedly, played a massive role in Oro’s work, which has impacted both his life and his art. When approached by theatre artist, Hazel Venzon, with this project, Oro immediately knew he wanted to use this opportunity to retell parts of his life which reflect his childhood; when he lived apart from his father (Saudi Arabia) for over ten years. He will use this performance as an opportunity to tell his story and to share memories of his neighbourhood and surroundings

growing up in Metro Manila. Oro’s talent and long history of digital design - a graphic artist, painter, illustrator and animator - make him the best fit to support this theatrical feat. (Im) migration has played a significant role in both collaborators’ lives. They are thrilled to use The Places We Go as an opportunity to retell parts of their lives, reflecting how many Canadians, too, have lived apart from their parents and loved-ones spanning the majority of their formative years. We will have a sign language interpreter (Mon July 24 - 15:30, Fri July 28 - 19:15, Sun July 30 - 17:15).

Horoscope An indefinite link suggests that the influence of certain friends may not be as helpful as you think. While divulge information can often bring many benefits, this time you might find the opposite. Their advice or words of wisdom could be misleading. It might be because they don’t really understand your situation fully. Bearing this in mind, it would be better to pay attention to your instinct.
You might feel like doing something on the stimulus of the moment to relieve a feeling of pressure. If you feel this way it might be more beneficial to stick with an idea or project and see it through to the end, as your efforts won’t then be wasted. As the focus shifts to your home zone, the cosmos encourages you to take a step back and spoiled in a bit of pampering and self-care.
It might not be the best time to commit to a path or try a new solution because you’re thinking may not be as clear as usual. You may easily absorb other people’s energies which could have an impact on certain decisions but later your confidence will return as the celestial picture changes and your efforts to get organized and communicate produce results. You should have no difficulty in deciding what is best for you.
PAHALANG
You might be tempted to jump in action based on false information. Unexpected difficulty could lie ahead, which is why you shouldn’t rush into anything. Things become stable as progresses, and as long as you don’t hurry you can do well. The financial matters take the top spot in your list of priorities, and you’re encouraged to resolve any outstanding issues.
You may lack energy in a situation that calls for action at the start. However, there’s also a good chance that you’ve already invested time and energy into this matter and that results have not been forthcoming. Trying too hard or acting on impulse might not help, but asking friends for advice could mean that things turn out better than you’d hoped. Finally, your social life will have extra sizzling time.
Doing the best for everyone may mean that plans become watered down and no easy solution presents itself. You may find yourself in this situation or it could be you don’t want to upset anyone. You may have no option, as someone will criticize you whatever you decide. Just do what seems best to you and don’t worry what others say. You’ll be in a lighter and brighter space.
There is a positive shift in the air that will inspire and stimulate you. As you will feel you’re in your element and ready to tackle the next big project or make some significant changes. Prior to this, it would help to be careful about what you promise, as an abrupt yes to a request could mean you aren’t able to fulfill it. It might be better to first reflect on what is involved.
This could lead to problems and disappointments down the line, so your best option may be slow down and do further research. If you’ve been experimenting with various ideas and trying on new options for size, you might be tempted to take one of them further without thinking it through properly. Gathering information can help you make wiser choices.
If you want to get a productive start, it might help to slow down and think things through. Mixed messages could be an issue at the start, as well as the temptation to act on the encouragement of the moment. You’ll be glad you did, as your efforts, in tandem with others, will be far more fruitful. You’ll enter a more intense phase that could concrete the way for deeper change from the inside out.
Your social life continues to look upbeat, with a focus on this sector coinciding with a reunion, or perhaps you will look up someone you haven’t heard from in a while. If you’re meeting with someone you’ve had a dispute with, it might be possible to heal the past, but great sensitivity may be required to do it. More isolated sector of your chart, signaling that it’s time to relax and recharge.
You could be going over old ground again. As this phase will progress could be delayed. However, doing the necessary work now and creating a sound structure for further development can assure future success. So remember to back up important documents on your computer and be careful when closing key deals.
This change of heart may come about as a result of mistakes made earlier that may have cost you. While opportunities for fun and delightful experiences continue to present themselves, there’s a shift in the air that could encourage a more dedicated outlook. A desire to get organized and focus on clean living and a healthier outlook may now seem the better way ahead.

In times of doubt
We often ask ourselves some questions. Why Doesn't God answer me? Is it Possible We Have Been Misled Into Thinking We Can Solve Our Problems With Prayer? It is easy to think that problems go away because we are Christians. Now that I am a Christian, my Faith will solve every problem, relieve every doubt. But Psalm 77 and all the Bible - suggests something on the contrary. Even with Faith, life is still full of problems and doubts. We pray and we meditate but GOD is still silent. We tried prayer but prayer doesn't seem to work. We tried to meditate on God's Word, but that too leaves us empty. Our problem is that we are relying on prayer and meditation as techniques - and problems cannot be solved by techniques. We often advice to a person "Pray about it and meditate on the Word". Such advice is not wrong, but it's totally and virtually useless. Prayer is not the first thing to do when we are in trouble. GOD
designed prayer as an instrument of intimacy between HIM and us. The inconceivable becomes possible when we begin with GOD. Let's be honest, our tendency is to pray first, ask GOD to resolve all of our problems with a wave of His Hand, and then meditate - if we meditate at all - waiting for GOD to come to the rescue. When we pray before we meditate, we pray about our problems, our suffering, our anxiety, and our worries. We put ourselves at the center of our prayers. "I'm in trouble, I'm in pain, I'm depressed. Save me from my problems, GOD". INSTEAD, we need to learn to meditate on GOD. We need to think about HIS Nature, the Wonder of WHO HE is, and HIS activity in history and in our lives. Then when we pray, GOD takes center stage in our prayers instead of ourselves. Meditating on GOD changes the way we pray. We focus on Who GOD is, what HE is like and what HE can DO. "GOD, You are the Lord of my
Let's get social
life and my problems. You are Holy and Merciful. You are Unchanging and Dependable. YOU are all I need in life." If we begin by praying about our problems and our feelings. we limit our thinking. But when we start with a GOD Who knows no limits. HE is the Creator of the universe and the Author of life. All knowledge and truth are HIS. By focusing on HIM instead of ourselves, we remove unnecessary limitations from our thinking and our prayers. EXPLAINING THE SILENCE OF GOD The answer is obvious and shocking. GOD was silent because HE chose to be. HIS silence was intentional. - Because GOD wants us to have a deeper Faith. Times of trials and doubting are part of the process that make us grow spiritually strong and wise. - If GOD always responded instantly to our cries for help, we would remain spiritually immature, forever mastered by feelings and moods. Our prayers would always be self-centered rather than GODcentered. Our outlook would remain natural, not spiritual. We need to have mature faith and Christ-like character. GOD is always there for us. GOD's silence does not signal HIS Absence or HIS Disinterest. We can say and rejoice - " I will remember the Deeds of the LORD."

Ascendant Awards are presented to an individual who, early in their career, already demonstrates the characteristics of strong leadership, passion, innovation and creativity, and a dedication to the supply chain profession. Katrina’s interest for the supply chain industry is illustrated by her two-year term as President of the University of Manitoba Supply Chain Organization (UMSCO) at the Asper School of Business. Membership doubled in size during her presidency due to her strong leadership, and her desire to make a difference, which contributed to making the association one that students could be proud to call their own. I learned early in my commerce degree that supply chain management is a niche
major and career path. As a result, I’ve made it my personal mandate to advance the profession of supply chain management. At an organization level, I leverage my education and experience in supply chain management to build efficient procurement processes. I aim to be an advocate for both my department and my profession— understanding that the profession of supply chain management inches closer to being a wellrecognized and strategic part of any organization every time supply chain management professionals create value for their companies. I aspire to carve the path for other supply chain management professionals by championing supply chain success. Strongly involved in the Manitoba Filipino community, Katrina sat on the board as Executive Assistant for the Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) for several years during her studies. She was responsible for liaising with local business owners to generate membership, managed financial documents and actively participated in public relations and special events for the Council, and eventually became a chairperson for the MFBC Awards Gala. While her term on the Board ended in 2015, Katrina is still a member of the association and a chairperson for the MFBC Awards Gala.
That same year, Katrina Daaca was nominated for and won a seat on the local board as Director for SCMA Manitoba, where she promotes the supply chain profession and works on a strategic plan to encourage long-term member retention and recruitment. Finally, Katrina is enrolled in the SCMP designation program and expects to graduate in June 2017 before pursuing what looks like a promising career in the field. I hope the future of supply chain management sees organizations making room for supply chain management not only at an operational level but also in executive and c-suite achain management professionals lead strategic initiatives in every organization. At an educational level, I’m hopeful employers in all industries will acknowledge and support higher education for supply chain management. It’s an exciting time to be part of a quickly growing profession and I’m confident the opportunities for supply chain management professionals will only continue to grow from here. Her award will be presented during the SCMA National Conference, at the Awards Gala Luncheon to be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Ma-Anne Dionisio to make Rainbow Stage debut in Mamma Mia!
This August, Rainbow Stage will produce the smash-hit musical that you already know you’re going to love - Mamma Mia! Featuring twenty ABBA songs, a mother, a daughter, and three possible dads Mamma Mia follows young Sophie in her search for identity, love, and her happily ever after. Mamma Mia! will be Directed by Ann Hodges, choreographed by Lisa Stevens, and conducted by
Anthony Bastianon with a cast made up of Rainbow Stage veterans and newcomers to Winnipeg. Making her Rainbow Stage debut, international singing sensation Ma-Anne Dionisio will return to her Winnipeg roots to play Donna, the fiercely strong and freespirited matriarch. Born in the Philippines, Ms. Dionisio moved to Winnipeg in 1990 and three short years later was wowing audiences in Toronto as Kim in the awardwinning original Canadian production of Miss Saigon. Known for her soaring soprano and dramatic flair, Ms. Dionisio has starred as Little Girl in Flower Drum Song (Broadway), as Maria in West Side Story (The Stratford Festival), Eponine in Les Misérables (Cameron Mackintosh), Grizzabella in Cats (Mirvish), and Sandy in Grease (TaurPro). Local triple threat Jennifer Lyon returns to Rainbow Stage for her 14th
season to play Tanya, Donna’s hilariously dry-witted, hard-partying pal and former bandmate. Ms. Lyon is known for her powerhouse vocals, impeccable comedic timing, and explosively energetic performances. Favorite roles at Rainbow Stage include Ethel McCormack (Footloose), Velma Von Tussle (Hairspray), and Ursula (The Little Mermaid). Denise Oucharek makes her Rainbow Stage debut as Rosie – Donna’s funloving, sidesplittingly funny best pal. Ms. Oucharek received her B.Mus. and B.Ed. from Queen’s University & was the recipient of the 1997 Mississauga Arts Council Award as Emerging Artist in Theatre. Well established as a performer across Canada, Ms. Oucharek has appeared in Mamma Mia (Mirvish – original Canadian cast), The Sound of Music (Stratford Festival, Mirvish), and Carousel
