Tips on how to budget

M

anaging your expenses while settling in can be challenging. Creating a budget is a great way to help keep track of your money and understand where your money goes. A budget can also help you identify ways to save some money each month. Below are some tips to keep in mind: Track your monthly expenses. This includes small items such as snacks and coffee. Doing this helps you evaluate the reality of your spending when creating a budget. Divide expenses into fixed and variable. Fixed costs are things like rent and utilities — necessities that occur every month. Flexible costs are things that you spend money on – like clothing and entertainment – which may vary each month. Take a look at whether the money you’re spending is more than the money you have coming in. Rein in your non-essential spending. There are creative ways to cut down on flexible expenses

while still enjoying your leisure time. For example, if you like going to the movies, there are certain nights when tickets are cheaper. If you enjoy going out and getting to know your new city, check out local websites that offer a calendar of free events throughout the week. Local libraries sometimes offer free passes to museums and galleries within the city, another great way to save on costs. Need a little help? There are some handy and easy-to-use online tools available that can help you get started, like the Expenses Calculator(https:// ic.gc.ca/app/scr/oca-bc/ssc/expense.html?lang=eng) or RBC’s NOMI (https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/ mobile/feature/nomi/index.html) Budgets app. Or even better, speak with a financial advisor about tips and helping to create a plan to keep your finances in order. Find more ideas on how to save more and settle in faster at rbc.com/starttoday.

UPLB top student rallies fellow grads to serve the nation Helbert Paat, a son of a farmer and native of Cagayan is this year’s lone summa cum laude and tops all graduates of the University of the PhilippinesLos Baùos (UPLB). In his commencement speech, Paat said many people lack passion for independent learning and critical thinking which makes the nation a slave to the lessons it realized, but never learned from. The Applied Math major

cited as examples those who do not make careful analysis before voting in elections; and those who rely on feelings without assessing if they are based on facts. He also expressed fears that, by having leaders who do not want to listen and do not want to heed their advocacies, the culture of impunity appears normalized in the present. At the end of his speech, Paat encouraged his fellow graduates to serve the nation.

Graduating friends remember slain Winnipeg teen Jaime Adao Jr.

H

undreds of people attended the Tec Voc High School graduation Ceremony held the University of Winnipeg which also honored their student Jaime Adao Jr. Imelda and Jaime Adao Sr., the parents of the slain Winnipeg teenager were given an honorary high school diploma for their son. His graduating friends ceremoniously held a large portrait of Adao with a mock high school diploma. His close friends expressed grief saying that he should have been at the graduation program celebrating the moment with them. On Friday, the Adao parents will be given an honorary diploma in memory of their son from Booth University College's faculty of business and administrative studies at their Sheppard Street bakery where their son worked.

The teen was known as "Jimboy" to friends and family. He was killed in the evening of March 3 while at his West End home with his grandma. The police charged two men in connection with the slaying. Ronald Chubb, 29, faces second-degree murder and attempted murder charges; and Geordie Delmar James, 34, has been charged with manslaughter.

Canada Day Fam Jam at Betula Lake By Kristin Macaraeg

Dinner time

T

his past weekend at Betula Lake was jam packed with food, family, and fun in the sun. Our family cabin has been the hub of our summer get togethers with families and friends for over 25 years. We have been going to the Whiteshell every summer since I was born. This was an extraordinarily special weekend as we celebrated my mom, Nora Macaraeg’s Birthday. Our extended families: the Macaraegs, Donens, Catris’ and Alexanders came together on Saturday to celebrate. Of course Mom was busy as usual trying

to cook up a storm, even though there was plenty of food at the party. Although she always works tirelessly in the kitchen, I think she secretly enjoys knowing that she makes a lot of bellies happy and full of fine Filipino food. The highlight for her was being able to enjoy the festivities with all five of her grandkids who are four years and under. We hope you enjoyed your birthday mom. There is no shortage of love surrounding you. The following day we celebrated Canada Day and each time I go to our family cabin I’m so humbled by how hard my parents worked to provide for their

on and on. My mom loves cook nonstop for everyone. They do this all for their grandkids and kids. Their outpouring of generosity is mind boggling, in a good way. Very deservingly, it also makes me happy they do enjoy the good life, visiting with their friends and traveling the world. Thank you for everything you have sacrificed and done for us mom and dad. Mike and I, along with our families, appreciate you both and love you so much. We will never take for granted the opportunity to Kristin & Nora Macaraeg grow up exploring and enjoying family. My dad, Cris Macaraeg, nature and the beauty at Betula immigrated from the Philippines in 1973 with one piece of luggage and $200. My mom arrived soon after my dad found a job. Both my parents are now retired. My dad worked for Acres International, engineering firm, and my mom worked in Human Resources as an HR Advisor for Manitoba Hydro. My parents managed to put me and my brother, Michael, through many competitive sports and private school. As retirees, they still continue to work hard but in a different way now. My dad likes his projects and loves to build. He built our cabin, rocking horses, Lola Nora with the grandkids a floating dock and the list goes

A

Friendship Circle formed by all the guests, led by Dr. Rey Pagtakhan and Perla Javate, capped the program celebrating the 121st Independence Day celebration last June 22 at the Marlborough Hotel. Strong earthquake could hit northern PH, says feng shui expert

A

feng shui expert predicted that a strong earthquake could hit the Philippines anytime between July and October this year. Master Hanz Cua, who regularly appears in the popular morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” on ABS CBN, used

tarot cards in predicting a 6.8 magnitude and above earthquake that could hit the northern part of the country. However he pointed out that his prediction is only a guide. The Metropolitan Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS) said that the

West Valley Fault which transects Metropolitan Manila and nearby provinces, could generate a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. The strongest historical earthquake that hit the Philippines happened on August 17, 1976 when an 8.0 magnitude tremor struck Mindanao.

Winnipeg Detailer Only Canadian Selected For 2019 Air Force One Detailing Team at Seattle’s Museum of Flight for 2nd Year

Winnipeg detailer Crisanto Aquino of Dr. Shine Auto Spa has been hand-picked for the second year to the much anticipated 2019 Air Force One Detailing Team at Seattle’s Museum of Flight. He is the only Canadian detailer selected this year out of hundreds of detailers in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean by the original “Detailer of Air Force One”, Renny Doyle of Detailing Success. Doyle just announced this year’s 55-person team and he will lead the weeklong project at the museum, July 7-14. For 16 years, members who are chosen for the exclusive Air Force One Detailing Team, do so voluntarily as their patriotic duty to restore, maintain and protect the original presidential jet Air Force One and more than a dozen additional historic aircraft currently on exhibit in the museum’s new Airpark Pavilion. “I trained Cris as an expert in paint and he has perfected his skill at cleaning and polishing paint

and metal. When I chose him for the team last year, I was confident he was qualified for the job,” said Doyle. “After a year on the team, he has proven he has the experience needed to continue our work and he has the leadership skills to help us coordinate new team members and show them the ropes this year.” “I am just as excited this year about being chosen of the team as I was last year, but I think I bring more to the table this year than last,” says Aquino. “It is an honor to be steward and caretakers for all these iconic aircraft – especially Air Force One. I am excited about having been chosen for the team again.” In addition to Air Force One, which is currently in preservation stages after 15 years of restoration, the team will continue restoring a solid aluminum WWII B-29 Super Fortress Bomber and a recently acquired and badly deteriorating Vietnam-era B-52G Stratofortress Bomber. They will also clean and continue to maintain the firstever Boeing “Jumbo Jet” 747; the Concorde Alpha Golf; and the first 1960s-70s-era Boeing 727-022 commercial airliner – all three, planes previous teams have begun restoring in the past 5-10 years. Air Force One is the first presidential jet, known as a flying Oval Office for four American presidents including Eisenhower,

Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. It entertained International dignitaries like Nikita Khrushchev and Henry Kissinger. For more than a decade, it lived on the open tarmac exposed to Seattle’s notorious climate. In 2003, a Bushadministration executive contacted Doyle about saving the deteriorating paint and brightwork on the iconic plane. Doyle was known for his skill at paint correction and restoring the shine on classic cars, as well as his knowledge in caring for expensive car collections, exotics, and aircraft. “That beautiful jet was in such a distressed state when I first saw it in 2003, and it was just me, my wife and business partner Diane, and a few staff members who decided anything we did would help and nothing we did could make it worse,” said Doyle. “There was a lot of new technology, new equipment, and innovative products coming onto the market for professional detailers 16 years ago that I had been field testing. “Since then, those tools and products – some for which we have developed specifically based on the needs of this project, have been instrumental in bringing the plane up to the excellent condition it is in now.” Air Force One still requires an annual cleaning because even though it does not sit exposed on the tarmac, it is inside an open-air pavilion, covered but still subject to the dampness and cold that causes her paint and brightwork to get cloudy. The team also continues their restorative work on the other iconic planes on display.
