Community Coming Together to Help Find our Missing Kababayan By Leila Castro Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com

A

s immigrants, we gave up many life comforts in our home country including the support system of having many relatives and friends around. Here in Canada, we work hard to reach our dream of having a far better life. No one is prepared for the worst situation that could possibly hit a family. A situation that makes us realize that we indeed are vulnerable, being immigrants. When we found out that we have a missing kababayan, 204 Neighbourhood Watch immediately connected with various Winnipeg community social media groups and with Bear Clan. Twenty-four hours from the time Eduardo “Eddie” Balaquit was last seen, 204 Neighbourhood Watch patrollers met with the family’s relatives and friends of at least a dozen people while they were doing search at the Brookside Cemetery. Realizing that a centralized plan was needed, that same evening we spoke to Eddie’s son and suggested about engaging a Bear Clan volunteer skilled in finding missing persons and having a more organized and coordinated search effort. We designated an indoor assembly area for the evening search party and 204 Neighbourhood Watch made a call to different networks, including the 204 Filipino Marketplace social media group, for bayanihan action. On the following day, inquires and

pledges for food and water started flooding my inbox. At 530pm, we arrived at the assembly venue and found an overwhelming number of volunteers. Close to 200 people joined the evening search. The volunteers were dispatched to areas surrounding the place where Eddie was last seen. On search day 3, there were again around 200 people that showed up. Volunteers were instructed to concentrate on the open field at King Edward and Brookside. Within 204 Filipino Marketplace social media group where over 30 thousand Filipino Manitobans are connected, hundreds mentioned about offering prayers and helped spread the announcements. Searching for Eddie continued for another week, until WPS mandated all community search efforts to stop, as it focused on Arborg town, north of Winnipeg. Each night we ended our search with a community gathering over food provided by generous business owners and individuals. We witnessed how frustration pounds hard on the family members who are very worried about Eddie. Many times, I was asked on media interviews if the search went well. I always responded that it was not successful because we did not find Eddie, but it went well in terms of the number of people that came out to join the search, considering that we are immigrants, we have

WHAT WE CANNOT LOSE Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will hear; even I will carry will carry, and will deliver you. Isaiah 46:4 Years ago I heard about an elderly gentleman who was suffering from the first stages of dementia. He lamented the fact that he often forgot about GOD. "Don't you worry", said a good friend, "HE will never forget you."

Growing old is perhaps the hardest task we have to face in this life. As the saying goes, "Getting old is not for sissies." Mainly, growing old is about loses. We devote most of our early life to acquiring things, but they are merely things we will lose as we age. We lose our strength, our looks, our friends, our job. We may lose our wealth, our home, our health, our spouse, our independence, and perhaps

the greatest loss of all, our sense of dignity and self-worth. But there is one thing that you and I will never lose - THE LOVE OF GOD. "Even to your old age, I am He," GOD said to the prophet, "and even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear, even I will carry, and deliver you" (Isaiah 46:4). "The righteous shall flourish like a pal tree," wrote the songwriter (Psalm 92:12). "Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our GOD. They shall still bear fruit in old age" Psalm 92:13-14). JESUS loves me, this I know, Though my hair is white as snow; Though my sight is growing dim, Still He bids me trust in Him. GOD'S LOVE NEVER

GROWS OLD. The smile on my face doesn't mean my life is perfect; It means I appreciate what I have and what GOD has blessed me with. BIBLE VERSES ABOUT INDEPENDENCE DAY Galatians 5:1 - It is for FREEDOM that CHRIST has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:13 - You my brothers, were called to be FREE.

Favorite Album Part 4 by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

Metal is another broad genre of music, from the sappiest and catchiest Glam/Pop Metal ballads to the most brutal Death Metal grinders, to the most blasphemous Black Metal rituals and the most neckbreaking Thrash speedsters. And I have

favorites as well from each of these subgenres. And I will start with the mostderogated Metal genres of all—Glam/ Pop Metal, whose commercial peak was the period 1986–1992. Here are my most

favorite albums in the category. No matter how many music enthusiasts ridicule it, this subgenre of Metal remains well-loved! I actually love the entire genre Metal in practically the same intensity as I love also New Wave and Progressive Rock. Van Halen - 5150 (1986) Choosing which album by Van Halen is the best is a matter of personal taste and experience. The reason this album i s my favorite is because it contains three Power ballads that meant something personal to me: "Why Can't This Be Love?," "Dreams," and "Love Walks In." Listening to these songs right now makes me tearyeyed. Such is the power of songs to draw emotions from a serious listener. Guns ’N’ Roses - Appetite for Destruction (1987) What self-respecting Metalhead didn't fall in love with the band especially because of this powerful album of stellar intensity? Simply a sweet album o' mine! Bon Jovi - New Jersey (1988) My first introduction to Bon Jovi was 1986's 'Slippery when Wet,' but this album was what really resonated with me. "Blood on Blood" did it for me. Skid Row - Skid Row (1989) "I Remember You"! Enough said. Warrant - Cherry Pie (1990) Another album that resonated so deeply in me, primarily because "I Saw Red" became the theme song of my then broken heart, courtesy of someone whom I used to love so much during this era. Mr. Big - Lean into It (1991) When this superband came out, the debut album was a sure hit. But this one was what saw the band in their subtler yet more creative and still virtuosic predisposition. "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind"--yeah! Memories! Bliss!

Hayp - Hayp (1991) In the Philippine archives, the only album that I could classify as proper Pop/ Glam Metal that really impressed me was the self-titled, only album of Hayp, which was comprised by virtuosic musicians... very befitting in the genre that they operated within. And I'm honored for my former band's having performed backto-back with Hayp a number of times at Club Dredd Timog in 1991/1992; and the honor of having guitarist M e n d e z walked into the stage one gig during the last song of our set to engage my bandmate guitarist Rain Paggao in a 'Crossroads'reminiscent lick trading to the delight of the ecstatic crowd of that night's jampacked Club Dredd. Saigon Kick - The Lizard (1992) When this album came out, the oncebright star of the genre was already waning, giving way to the next darling-genre of the mainstream--Grunge and Alternative Rock. But this particular album still came to my hands--a gift from a former love, who sang to me "Love Is on the Way." I fell in love all over again, only to realize that the love that she was referring to--being "on the way"--was not meant for me anymore but already for another guy. I cried millions of teardrops to this fucking beautiful song back in those days! Good thing that I could listen now to this album in peace. But then, of course, some sad memories will never be forgotten. They remain forever. Final Note There are still so many albums on my list of favorites from this genre (Poison, White Lion, Aerosmith, Nelson, Damn Yankees, Steelheart) but this Top 8 should do for now.

established a free department for underprivileged children – and they asked my sisters and me to attend. They closed the free department a few years later, but five of us kept going and they didn’t charge us anything. What did that education mean for me? From being an illiterate child, ignorant, malnourished and insecure, I became someone who learned to read, discovered numbers and devoured everything.

B

orn August 8, 1964 in a small island in the province of Iloilo, Philippines, Mary Astrid Segovia Tuminez was raised in extreme poverty. She was the sixth of seven children. Their mother left them when she was only five years old. Their oldest sister, who was only 15 years old then, raised them.

“I was illiterate on the first day of school. In my school, the smartest child was put in the first seat, first row. The dumbest child was in the last seat, last row, and I was actually in the last seat, last row. But after a few months, I’m happy to report that I ended up sitting right in front – and I’m here where I am now all because of my access to education. “Speaking personally, education really is the great equalizer. If you grow up underprivileged, education offers you the chance to discover an entire world. You might live in a village or under a bridge in Manila and know nothing about anything, but education can set your mind free. Any time you open up a mind, you’re opening up possibilities.” [Source: Wikipedia]

Right after their mother left, Astrid and her siblings were fortunate to receive a scholarship to attend a private school run by Catholic nuns. She credits the nuns for giving her the opportunity to get an education, which she believed gave her the success and accomplishments in her early years. She believed that education enables individuals to fulfill their dreams and maximize their potential in life. educators – or whatever else we dream of being.” In 2013, Dr. Tuminez was named one of the “Top 100 Global Influencers” by the Filipina Women’s Network of the United States. University President On April 20, 2018, Dr. Tuminez was introduced as the seventh president of Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah. The Utah State Board of Regents unanimously voted for her appointment. UVU serves more than 37,200 students and is the largest public university in Utah. It is one of the few in the nation that offers a dual-mission model that combines the rigor of a teaching university with the accessible vocational programs of a community college. Among the eight colleges and universities that comprise the Utah System of Higher Education, women lead three others. Dr. Tuminez is the fourth. However, she is the first woman to become UVU President. [Source: Deseret News/Marjorie Cortez] Being selected a UVU President "is in some ways overwhelming, but my life was completely transformed by education," she said. “I was really intrigued by type of education that is being done here, the dual mission, which I thought was bold and experimental and also, really the right kind of approach in the 21st century. It addresses inclusion in a big way at a time when the world and societies are polarized and socio-economic differences are becoming bigger and bigger," she added. [Ibid] Daniel W. Campbell, chairman of the board of regents, said Tuminez’s experience, vision, and dedication to student success would ensure that UVU continues to thrive in the coming years. “Dr. Tuminez has proven to be a dynamic leader across academic, nonprofit, public policy and corporate sectors. Throughout her storied career, she has focused on bridging gaps in education and opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, which seamlessly aligns with UVU’s institutional mission and core themes,” Campbell said. [Ibid] Dr. Tuminez is fluent in English, Russian, Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), French, Tagalog and a working knowledge of Spanish. She enjoys running and has completed one marathon and four half-marathons. She had 11 years of martial arts training in a system called Tan's Dazzling Hands while living in New York City. She is married and has three children. At the time she was appointed UVU President, Dr. Tuminez was resident in Singapore.
