Jets fans are simply the best. As the Jets continue their road to the Stanley Cup, Winnipegers have jumped on the Whiteout bandwagon and doing so in style. The #WPGWhiteout Street Parties have been epic and the Jets-Preds Game 6 was no different. For Instagram street photographer, “illpixill” it was an opportunity to visualise the street party in a different light. With a Fuji X100F and media access in hand, these are some of the gems from the street party. Follow @Filipinojournal and @illpixill on Instagram.

348-meter world-class bridge underway to boost tourism in Siargao

OPINIONS info@FilipinoJournal.com

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is constructing a P337 million bridge project that is not only seen to provide ease in traveling around the country’s surfing capital Siargao but will also leave tourists in awe with its aesthetics. DPWH Region 13 Director Pol M. delos Santos said the project which involves the construction of a 348-lineal meter bridge connecting Catangnan and Cabitoonan villages of General Luna town, is ongoing and is now under Phase 2.

“Construction activities are going smoothly on Phase 2 covering most part or 198-lineal meters of Catangnan-Cabitoonan Bridge. If weather permits, we aim to finish this segment by 2019 while we simultaneously work on the 75-lineal meter portion under Phase 3,” said Director delos Santos. When completed, the bridge will significantly reduce travel time without going the lengthy 18-kilometers Dapa-General Luna Road and Barangay roads of Sta. Cruz, Sta. Fe, and Libertad. It will particularly be beneficial to locals, tourists and surfing enthusiasts going around the island looking for good surfing

With its world-class design and the turquoise water underneath, Director delos Santos added that the bridge will also attract passersby, and possibly develop into a tourist spot. Funded under the convergence program of DPWH and the Department of Tourism, the construction of CatangnanCabitoonan Bridge is seen to boost the already flourishing tourism industry of Siargao. It is part of a bigger project that also involves the improvement of a 2.22 kilometers road leading to Dapa Port and construction of the 36-lineal meter Libertad Bridge.

Isa Ka Bang Tunay na Kaibigan? (On the Essence of Being a True Friend)

by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com

Above all, you should be supportive and appreciative of your friends' accomplishments,

but be positively but discreetly critical of their follies and mistakes. If you notice that something's wrong with a friend of yours, then you should be able to help the person correct it and to talk with her about it in a nonjudgmental manner. Ultimately, never talk about your friends' shortcomings maliciously with other people or even with other friends. Ever.

With that, thanks to all those who regard me as a true friend. I put a high value on loyalty, confidence, and honesty in the matter of friendship. So, to those whom I consider friends, I had never and will never speak ill of you behind your backs. Friendship is next to love. Take care of it very well.

Winnipeg Sikaran on the way to Ottawa

By Lourdes Lynn Igne

W

hile I am writing this, 21 martial arts athletes from Manitoba will be travelling to Ottawa, Ontario to represent our Province at the World Karate Championships (WKC) Canadian National Team Try-outs that will be held on May 17 to 21, 2018 at the Delta City Centre Hotel. Four of the 21 members of Team Manitoba are from the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy;

myself, my big sister Lee Angela, Sheryl-lyn PaduaPolicarpio and Miley Carino. The 21 Team Manitoba delegation will be led by 3 coaches Gerald Wo c j e c k o w s k i , Chris Bernjack and Kelly Legaspi. How did we qualify for Team Manitoba? We competed in two WKC accredited Regional Tournaments, one was in March in Weyburn, Sask and the other one was hosted by Bae’s Martial Arts in April in Transcona. Any martial arts competitors in these tournaments who won 1st or 2nd places in their divisions and events secured a spot for Team Manitoba. This signals the continuation of hard work, more

training hours, intense practices, lots of reading and understanding the rules governing the prestigious National Tournament. We thank our Masters, Sensei, Instructors and coaches for preparing us for this big challenge ahead of us. And of course our greatest appreciation to our parents, families and friends for putting together the funds for the registration, uniforms, prescribed equipments and the trip itself. All these efforts encouraged and inspired us more to be proud representative and fighting athletes for the Province of Manitoba. What happens at the Nationals? The divisions are determined by the competitor’s age, weight, height and gender, not by belt rankings. Meaning lower belts (beginners, intermediate and advance) will also be competing against black belts. There will be 2 rounds for all events; traditional hand forms, creative hand forms,

traditional weapon forms, creative weapon forms, point sparring etc. The competitors will be ranked and the ones who ranked Top 4 for both round 1 and round 2 qualify to the next level and become a part of Team Canada! Pretty tough! Reason for this WKC aims to come up with a very strong team to represent our country to come up with a strong team to represent Lee Angela Igne • 16 years old, 1st Degree Black Belt, Instructor of the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy • Grade 10 at the Maples Collegiate Lourdes Lynn Igne • 11 years old, Brown Belt Black Stripe, Junior Instructor of the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy • Grade 6 at the Leila North School

The first Manitoba Filipino Street Warriors By Lee Angela Igne

I

am very excited and proud to be a part of another milestone for the Filipino Community in Manitoba. The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival (MFSF) and our martial arts school, The Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy (WSAA) will be having the FIRST EVER Manitoba Filipino Street Warriors. This is a competition between teams featuring Filipino Street Games or Larong Kalye on June 9 Saturday at 3pm at the Maples Multiplex Grounds. I would like to share with you that this is also the first time that we will be enjoying the festivities and a lot more of events and activities from the different member organizations and associations of the MFSF for TWO DAYS! This inspired the WSAA to organize and bring some of the traditional Filipino street games. I am sure it will bring back sweet childhood memories of our Classic Titos and Titas in Winnipeg and also teach and show the Filipino Youth like me who were born here in Canada the fun that our parents had back

home when they were our age. I researched on some of these “Larong Kalye” and I found out that these were created by Filipino children using their ingenuity in innovating playthings out of anything that they can find from their yards or inside the house due to the scarcity of materials to make toys especially in the rural areas. They used stones, chalk, strings, and ball made of coconut leaves, coconut husks. And these games are played outdoors and involve a lot of physical activity. That is so cool! Examples are: patintero, luksong baka, luksong tinik, taguan, habulang pulis. I watched videos over the internet on how these games are played and I say WOW! They look so much fun, energizing and a lot of team building. Being born here in Canada, we do have outdoor activities, and being raised as a Filipino Canadian, I feel very grateful for experiencing playing these games with our Filipino friends and our parents too! I would like to encourage the different Filipino organizations and

associations, barkadas, families, workmates, schoolmates to form your team and register for the First Manitoba Filipino Street Warriors. The teams will be competing in different games where each team will earn points. At the end of all the games, the team who will accumulate the highest number of points will be declared as the First Manitoba Filipino Street Warrior and they will take home $500 cash courtesy of MFSF and a grand champion trophy courtesy of the WSAA. 2nd place will take home $300, 3rd place is $150 and consolation prizes for the rest of the participating teams. Teams can pre-register via email to wsaa2004@gmail. com or visit us at the Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academt Sports and Recreation Centre at Unit 12 – 1833 Inkster Blvd. Mondays to Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Deadline for registration is on Sunday May 27, 2018 at 3pm at the Filipino Seniors Hall at 49 Euclid Avenue. We will also have the briefing and orientation of the Teams and Team Captains on the same day.

Game Three favours Vegas, Jets now trailing 2-1

T

he Vegas Golden Knights scored twice in a 2:33 span, giving them a two-goal lead that the Winnipeg Jets couldn't overhaul. The score finished 4-2

in favour of Vegas, and the Jets now trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference Final of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Jonathan Marchessault, the

Golden Knights speedy centre, opened the scoring just 35 seconds in with his third of the series on a partial break that developed in the neutral zone. Marchessault blazed past a diving Jacob Trouba, and then slipped it past Connor Hellebuyck with a quick move to the backhand. The Jets responded in the second period as Wheeler getting the puck in the corner to the left of Mark Scheifele who scored his 13th goal of the playoffs. The lead however, did not last for long as

just 12 seconds later, Hellebuyck got caught behind the net, and Erik Haula took the puck from the Jets goaltender, and quickly played it in front to James Neal, who put it in the empty cage 12 seconds after Scheifele's goal. The Jets hounded the Golden Knights in the final period. In the end, the Jets came up short. They will try for some recovery on Friday when the teams faceoff in the Game 4. Puck drop is set for Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

She admitted she often asks her husband how he thinks she would handle motherhood. For his part, Escudero said he’s so proud of how she is coping up with the perks of a future mom. At the end of the day, Evangelista is certain she is going to be a good mom.

Mayweather smitten by Philippine hospitality

B

oxing champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. who was on a recent five-day visit to the country has vowed to return to embrace the Filipino people and reciprocate their love. The 41-year-old Mayweather and his entourage were accompanied by former Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson to Davao City on a private jet. He was welcomed by Presidential special assistant Secretary Bong Go. An appointment with President Duterte couldn’t be arranged because of the Chief Executive’s busy schedule. Nevertheless Go made sure Mayweather was given the red carpet treatment by designating close associates to take care of the champion’s stay. The undefeated fighter said he was happy to visit the Philippines. He said he was impressed by the famous Filipino hospitality. He added that he and his staff look forward to come back just to embrace the people

and show the same love that they gave them. He said the Filipinos are one of the best people in the world he has ever met. From Lanang in Davao City, Mayweather and his party also visited the Pearl Farm Beach Resort in the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte.

Philippine Rise now a marine protected area

T

he Philippines formally asserted its ownership over the Philippine Rise as President Duterte signed a Presidential Proclamation formally declaring portions of the underwater plateau as marine protected areas (MPAs). Duterte led the send-off ceremony while on board the BRP Davao Del Sur for the allFilipino scientists who will be conducting a six-month Maritime Science Research (MSR) at the Philippine Rise. He said the government will fully support them in their mission to conduct mapping, surveys, biological investigations and assessment of the coral reef and fisheries stock in the area until November. An MPA declaration over Philippine Rise reduces human

interaction with resources, thereby allowing the resources to replenish. MPAs also help reduce some anthropogenic-related problems and may enhance the resiliency of marine stressors.

Former Chief Justice Presided Her Own Demise Manila - Dura lex sed lex, the "law maybe harsh, but it is the law". The oppressive summer temperature in Manila is perhaps exhausting; but, the current events in the homeland is riveting. Barangay Elections, supposedly a civic election turns out to be a full blown partisan

political exercise with all the hoopla of campain posters and blaring campaign speeches dominate the day. But nothing is as absorbing as the news that hogs the headlines and front pages of print media about the ouster of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In less than a decade, two highest magistrates

Thankful for Seasons (Ecclesiastes 3;1-8) TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON A TIME FOR EVERY PURPOSE UNDER HEAVEN I grew up in the Philippines. The possibility of snow for Christmas was so remote that my mother would point to fog early morning as evidence that the holidays were just around the corner. She even decorates our Christmas Tree with white

cottons to serve as snow which was beyond our experience, imagination and understanding. When our family moved to Canada and now live in Winnipeg, the Winter experience is so unbelievable. There's a lot of snow when the Yuletide Season comes around. And we couldn't be happier with four distinct season.

of the land were removed. The first one, was by via impeachment carried out by Congress and Senate; the second ocassion was by quo warranto case decided in favour by the collegial body, the Supreme Court. I construe, removal of rank officials in government service under Duterte Administration is a norm, not unusual. Star ranked military officers were arrested, Cabinet Secretaries were fired, elected officials get imprisoned, and many more. Indeed, it is fun in the Philippines. When I heard the news the highest official of the Supreme Court was removed from office not through impeachment; but, by the slim majority decision of the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court when they granted

affirmation of the quo warranto case filed by the Solicitor General, I murmured, "The Supreme Court turned activist". Those in opposition argue the removal of the Chief Justice other than impeachment proceedings is unsconstitutional. The contention, however, of the Solicitor General, is, the case is not about the commission of impeachable offense perpetrated by the former Chief Justice; but, in the beginning the removed highest magistrate of the land is not eligible to be appointed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. It appears the selection committee erred in shortlisting the ousted former Chief Justice for appointment. Owing to constraint of space, I shall no longer essay the litany

of deficiences on the part of the removed Chief Justice. Rather, I will let the readers discover for themselves the distinction of impeachable offence from quo warranto petition. I am estopped to make known in public what my personal view is about the whole matter. Former Chief Justice Sereno is a friend of my friend. I do not desire to strain my friendly relations with common friends. But, I will repeat myself by citing my observation that the Supreme Court turned activist when they decided in favour the quo warranto petition filed by the Solicitor General. That woefully, the former Chief Justice presided over her own demise when she decided otherwise to break her indefinite health leave.

But we don't find the same response from many who have lived and grown up in Canada. We find it amusing that they don't share our appreciation for the wonderful cycle of change GOD has built into nature for our good. In Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8, Solomon acknowledged the cycles of life. He observed a time to sow and to reap, to weep and to laugh, to mourn and to dance, to gain and to lose, to keep silent and to speak, to love and to hate. Just as GOD determines the weather, HE controls the cycles in our lives. "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Do we resist those seasons and complain about the "snowy" conditions on the horizon? Or do we trust GOD and thank HIM for whatever HE planned for us? Whatever our situation is today, we can be thankful for

GOD's seasons. Let the changes of the WEATHER teach us about life . . . Always remember that Rain or Shine, the game of life goes on . . . So find beauty in each season to pray to GOD so that we will be able to withstand our life's storms . . . ALWAYS remember, you are not alone, HE is always there for you. . . GOD loves you more than anyone does. Just as the winter turns to spring, Our lives have changing season, too;

So when a gloomy forecast comes. Remember - GOD has plans for you. Rather than praying for a change in circumstances, Pray for a change of HEART. One SONG can change a MOMENT One IDEA can change a WORLD One STEP can start a JOURNEY BUT A PRAYER can change even the IMPOSSIBLE.

Favorite Albums Part 2

F

or this issue, I focused on my favorite Punkclassifiable albums. Of course, when talking about Punk music, the usual suspects would be The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Dead Kennedys— which I personally dub as the “Big Four of Classic Punk”—all of which are included also on my regular rotation. However, the following five albums were really the ones that deeply resonated in me—most likely because I was never the angry nor the angstfilled type of a person; and I neither am I a placard-wielding anti-establishment guy. I am simply a music enthusiast who gets drawn to music primarily because of the musicality itself.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

1986. To this day, it remains as compelling as how it was the first time I heard it. Descendents - Enjoy! (1986) ("Clean Sheets") Punk at its most romantic! "Get the Time," anyone? I actually thought that "Wendy" was an original by the band. Hey, I was talking about the pre-Internet days! It was already in the 2000s when I learned that it was actually by The Beach Boys. I

could still play this album in repeat mode while singing along to the top of my lungs. The Dead Milkmen - Bucky Fellini (1987) ("Watching Scotty Die") A highschool classmate of mine who immigrated to the U.S. in 1987 was the one who introduced me to this band in 1988, when he sent me a vinylrecord copy of it. I fell in love with the music right there and then, especially with the

Having said that, the Punk albums that have become my favorites are described more for their wackiness, fun, melody, and lyrical romanticism— instead of the seething “Fuck you, I hate myself, and I wanna die” rants. But don't get me wrong. I have also some of those on my list of favorites, which I will be featuring in the future issues. But for now, here are my Top 5 Favorite Punk Albums. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1983) ("Kiss Off") May be more specifically classified as Snot Punk, Scruff Rock, or Cowpunk, this album came to my big hands as early as

songs in this album, which sang about cats, badgers, and walruses. Anti-Nowhere League We Are...The League (1987) ("Streets of London") See? I'm drawn more to Punk's brattiness. "Woman" is another top Punk song for me. Wuds - Arms Talk (1985) ("Sana Hindi Minsan Mo Lang Akong Tingnan") Of course, there are lots of other personal favorites from Philippines' own Punk archives. However, this one remains my numbero n e . Again, the ornate song arrangements and melodies were what drew me to the music of Wuds, which will always be the best Philippine Punk band in my books. Final Note These are just some of my favorite ’80s-released Punk albums. I will tackle some of my picks from the other decades in future installments to this series. Punks not dead!

Maymay Entrata not joining Asia’s Next Top Model

Y

oung actress Maymay Entrata has denied that she will be a part of the Asia’s Next Top Model (ANTM) Cycle 6 contenders. The Pinoy Big Brother winner finally addressed the rumors as she wrote on Twitter that the ANTM gig isn’t true. Netizens have been calling Maymay to join the show after she and her onscreen partner Edward Barber graced the cover of the February issue of “Mega.” The “Metro Style” magazine also tapped the love team to be the cover of the digital cover of its March issue. Recently, the Fox Life TV show posted on their official Facebook page that the young actress is part of their “wish list,” saying that Maymay has what it takes to be Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 6 contender. The Pinoy Big Brother winner also captured the attention of international model and TV personality Tyra Banks. The top model liked the photo of the young actress in her social media. Though many hoped the true Filipina beauty would shine on the international modeling competition, it appears that the clamor will wait have to wait for another opportunity. The show recently uploaded the Philippines’ representative named AdelaMae Marshall. Maymay has expressed thanks to those who believe that she got what it takes to join the show.

Manitoba Santacruzan 2018 Pre-Event Photoshoot By Leila Castro Leilacastro.ca@gmail.com

“What is Santacruzan Mommy?” an eight year old child asked her mom after I handed to her the tiara, my gift to her. I heard the same question at least 5 times when young Sagalas came to my house to pick up their crown and to fit their gown. It’s a great honour to be given the role of Hermana Mayor (with my husband Rene Castro as the Hermano Mayor) of Manitoba Santacruzan this year. It is a big cultural event that is organized annually by Quezon Province Association of Manitoba (QPAM). Quezon Province is also known for the colorful Pahiyas festival during the month of May. This May 26, we will showcase both popular events into one celebration. We will also introduce Niyogyugan, Quezon Province’s coconut festival which is a known tourist attraction. Back home In the Philippines where Santacruzan happens at a time when kids are on vacation from school, and where it is the most awaited occasion of the season when flowers start to bloom, farmers start to celebrate

the first rain of the season, and the heat starts to mellow, the Hermana Mayor and Hermano Mayor play a critical role of putting together the list of Sagalas and Konsortes and leading the preparations of the event. Good thing that it is now the age now of social media, I did not have to go house to house to gather their names and ages, specially that it had to be done as early as March and the city was still in deep snow . But then I also realized that it was an important part missing – the busyness of the Hermana over pre-event meetings and gatherings to check on the individual needs of the Sagalas and Konsortes, and pampering them so that being a Santacruzan cast becomes a memorable part of their life. As the Hermana Mayor, I feel that I owe the participants a pleasant cultural experience to treasure for life. I decided to hold a get together event for a photoshoot and good food. I leveraged on the power of bayanihan, with the help of QPAM (headed by the president Maggie Chan-Urbano) and 204 Neighbourhood Watch

folks, we successfully replicated a traditional Pahiyas decoration. Nine photographers volunteered for the shoot on April 29. Jhayzon Paredes of 204 Live Music edited and released a Save the Date video. Amazing community teamwork resulted in beautiful photos that captured genuine joy of community members coming together for a celebration. QPAM will be releasing a Coffee Table Album (a hardback photobook that is of same quality and finish as a wedding or debut album) of the moments of the cultural event, an initiative where proceeds will go to the organization’s scholarship fund for underprivileged Quezon Province based youths. Inspired by the synergy of a community exemplifying genuine volunteerism, kind hearted donors immediately gave us

generous donations to make the Coffee Table Album a reality. Our huge THANK YOU to Bakerite, Realtor Nino Chan, Rodel Olesco of Birchwood, AIM World & Climacosa Services, and
