ave you ever heard someone suggest that if you just trust the Lord Jesus, He will solve all your problems and you'll float through life with riches and peace? If that were the way God planned it for people who serve Him, then what way Paul's problem? After his conversion, he was as godly as they come, yet he had problems galore. He was one of the greatest missionaries of all time - and what did he get for his trouble? Beaten up. Arrested. Nearly drowned. Run out of town. Look at Joseph, Abraham, Job, Jeremiah, Peter - godly me one and all. Yet they all faced dangers and trouble none of us would ever desire. So, why the struggle? Why is it that tragedy strikes Christians with the same blunt force that it strikes the most antagonistic atheists? Why are we not exempt from natural disasters, serious

illness, interpersonal squabbles, and mistreatment of others? Somehow in God's way of making things work out, our troubles can advance His kingdom and purposes (Romans 8:28). "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose". Our task is to glorify God, no matter what the circumstances. If we do, our struggle can direct others to the SAVIOR as we make our way toward of rest and reward in Heaven. TO MAKE US GOOD AMBASSADORS, GOD SENDS US TRIAL ALONG THE WAY, BUT WE BECOME TRUE CONQUERORS, WHEN IN LIFE'S STRUGGLES WE OBEY. GOD allows trials in our lives not to IMPAIR us but to IMPROVE us. GOD RICHLY BLESS US.

The sixties are the new fourties

T

he biblical age is seventy, and according to some doctors if you are a strong seventy you will reach eighty. And each year added to eighty is bonus. Imelda Marcos is 89 years old will face the court because of her conviction by the Sandiganbayan, and at the same time will be in the hustings in the forthcoming polls. How about that for an 89? Juan Ponce Enrile is in his mid-nineties. And if wins he will be in the Guinness for being a member of the senate as a centenarian. Malaysia’s Mahatir, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, Alfredo Lim and our very own President Rodrigo Duterte supposedly are past their prime, yet to this day are still very active. It must be true to many people now with advanced calendar age that ‘life begins at fourty’. And that the sixties are the new fourties. Age is only a number really. I can speak for myself that being in the seventies, I can claim am still active in many things. I can still perform. I can still write.

I conduct a TV show, I package business deals, etc etc. With fellow senior citizens, I can relate with them though I have much much younger friends at Monday Club and Wednesday Club, two fellowship groups which I attend regularly. When I am with a senior citizen groups big laughs always explode alleged sex exploits become the topic. Everyone has a story to tell. It is an excuse to be a doubting Thomas, but never voice your disagreement. And each time a pretty lass is passing the DOMs (darling old men) can't be restrained in their most malicious looks. Just to repeat, a sociologist will tell you that most men, poor and rich in their prime enjoyed drinking, having chicks on the side, and may have played cards, went to watch cockfighting derbies or enjoyed betting at the casinos. But somehow, as one grow older, the doctors will advise you to stop drinking. Your fatty liver

is already a cause for concern. You either lose your appetite to women or your ' Chuck Norris' can no longer drill or can do the roundhouse, even with the help of viagra. You remember that joke about that famous general/ambassador who when asked if he can still keep it up with his American wife, he reportedly said 'I still do it twice'... Someone made a retort, 'isa sa tagaraw, isa sa tag-ulan'( One in summer and one during rainy season). You are now disconnected with the thrill that sex has provided you over the years, but girl watching still feed the fantasy and can give you excitement even if you are at the edge of twilight years. I remember having this discussion during lunch break of a board meeting with then the late Chairman Roy Navarro, President Levi Laus, retired General Narciso Abaya, Budge Madamba, Benny Ricafort, Vic Yap and Jess Nicdao. Laughs filled the board room. To women, particularly those young girls in skimpy shorts who were 'victims' of those dagger looks from the seniors who in their younger years they were the Valentinos, Casanovas and Don Juans, don't be too offended. For all you know, you keep the older generation healthy and happy. Editor’s Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Pacquiao hopes to renew partnership with Roach

T

he boxing world may again see the legendary partnership between Manny Pacquiao and Freddie

Roach. Recently, Pacquiao raised eyebrows during a press conference in New York when he said he hopes to be reunited with long-time trainer Freddie Roach for his January bout against Adrien Broner. When asked to clarify his statement, Pacquiao said he hoped Roach would work as a supervisor with long-time associate Buboy Fernandez taking a lead role in training. Pacquiao and Roach shared a father-son like bond for over a decade. However the 39-year-old Filipino boxing legend admitted he could not remember the last time he spoke to Roach, blaming demands of his works as a Senator

in the Philippines for the falling-out. For his part, Roach said he had not been in contact with his former protégé since 2017. He added that he not going to make a move until Pacquiao contacted him. Pacquiao will be turning 40 next month. He shared that despite his busy work in the Senate, he really misses boxing. He also said he still hopes to negotiate a rematch of his 2015 superfight with Floyd Mayweather.

PH, China ink 29 landmark cooperation agreements

T

he Philippines and China have recently signed 29 landmark cooperation agreements covering cooperation on oil and gas exploration, trade and investment, infrastructure development, agriculture, and education, among others. The pacts were sealed following the bilateral meeting between President Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Malacañang. Xi is on a two-day state visit to the Philippines, which marked the first state visit of a Chinese President in 13 years. The Chinese President said the two counties have charted the future course of China-Philippine relations and crafted an “ambitious blueprint” for development. For his part, Duterte revealed they also tackled cooperation on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi, the

Philippines’ participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, mutual concerns on defense, security, maritime cooperation, law enforcement, transnational crime as well as strengthening our partnership in combatting the trafficking of illegal drugs. He also expressed gratitude to China for its generous assistance during calamities. The President later hosted a state dinner for Xi and his delegation at the Palace.

on the podium and to receive my silver medal, I felt accomplished and honoured to have represented my country Canada and that I have done it well. I felt that all my dedication and hardwork in training at our gym really paid off.” Lynlyn’s advice for those who have plans to join world tournament: “My advice for people who want to to the world’s tournament is train your hardest, never give up and fight through the pain and fight for it.” Lynlyn and Lee Angela Igne are the daughters of Redentor Igne and Kelly Legaspi; and Miley Carino is the daughter of Gil and Jam Carino.

Horoscope Can you imagine being your partner’s lover while keeping your independence? A partner for life or a short encounter, which will it be? Why not choose both? Don’t be influenced by old models that force you to choose between these two ideas. Don’t forget that in our modern world, your choices aren’t as limited as you might think!

Other members of your family may have dreamed of getting free of a duty or a moral lesson, but these dreams don’t apply to you. You can never be anyone other than who you are. That’s the way it is and you can’t change it. Your dreams of being someone else are like ghost that have come back to haunt you. Simply brush them away!

They bring a storm of individualism and freedom. You usually tolerate the quirks and minor shortcomings of your friends or family members, but they present real obstacles to your relationships. The only way to remedy the situation is to go on vacation. Spending some time alone will keep you out of trouble.

PAHALANG

This is difficult to do, what with everyone’s schedule being so demanding right now . If you want to make the best try to convince your team or family to work together. Hard as it is to coordinate their efforts and orchestrate harmony, the strength of your character and your team spirit will make it all work out.

A brief look at your love life reveals that you will be bridling at certain inhibitions. You long for peace and stability, and at the moment everything is in suspense. Use to gain some perspective on the situation. Until the ice melts and the flow of events resumes, why not devote your energy to some other attempt to achieve something?

The tension has been building up and you’re likely to boil over with the rage that comes from one too many doubts and suspicions. You’ve been nursing a feeling that your partner is distructed. The forecast for love is stormy, without a doubt. But making up after the quarrel promises to be lots of fun.

That’s what you’re liable to think and all your projects are delayed in quicksand, and you feel like you’re spinning your wheels. But even if things are momentarily stuck, don’t lose faith. Your inner self is gaining stability. When the time is right, it will be strong and reliable.

Something seems to be askew with your relationships, and you feel cut in opposite directions.Take cover, because promises to be an emotional roller coaster! One force is pushing you to enrich your inner universe and another force is pushing you into the arms of someone you’ve recently met. Stay busy to avoid confrontation.

Deep inside, don’t you have an strong desire to breathe new spirit into your love life? Of course, some things are more easily said than done. Currently, you don’t have much time to devote to yourself, much less your partner. Affection could bloom if given half a chance. They suggests that you commit yourself to making some decisions that will help bring you and your mate closer.

What’s gotten into you lately? People are going to think you’re a star, although you may not feel that way about yourselfHave you lost confidence in yourself? Are you now compensating for it? Do you feel a need for more success in your life? All this is possible, but you will have to take some risks if you’re going to progress.

Your desires don’t always go in a direction that does you the most good, and this can cause tension. It’s time to get what you need. You feel as though it’s impossible to combine your desires with what is good for you, specially in your love life. You wrestle with whether you should remain in your “creative” cave or share your life with someone. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Now is the time to work on something concrete. Stop asking if you’re gifted. This definitely isn’t the time for such questions. You will need the help of others if you’re to succeed, so get to work convincing them to ally with you. You may have to reveal more of yourself than you normally do in order to sway people to your side. It’s time to get out of your hole and take action!

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

F

or 32 years after her late husband, dictator Ferdinand Marcos, was toppled from power, Imelda Marcos was never convicted of the crimes she allegedly committed during the reign of Marcos. Of the approximately 100 cases of graft and corruption filed against Imelda, the Philippine government lamely prosecuted her only to let her go. Indeed, from the time the government allowed her to come home from exile to bury her deceased husband in 1989, she was untouchable. She even ran for president in 1992. She lost but proved that her husband’s following – the “Marcos Pa Rin” crowd – has remained loyal to her. Yes, she defiantly stood up against the establishment, the same people who ousted the Marcoses from power. But that didn’t discourage her to give up Philippine politics; after all, she and her husband were the conjugal rulers for more than two decades. They had it so good that they didn’t see it coming from, of all places, right under their noses in Malacanang Palace. It was no other than Marcos’ Minister of Defense Juan Ponce Enrile and his Chief of Staff and cousin Lt. General Fidel V. Ramos who led the People’s Power Revolution in 1986. Exiled to Hawaii at the urging of their best friend in Washington DC no less than the late President Ronald Reagan himself, who ordered then-Sen. Paul Laxalt to telephone Marcos. After trying to persuade Marcos to step down, Marcos finally asked him, “Should I step down? Senator, what do you think?” It was what Laxalt was waiting for. Laxalt then replied with his famous line: “Mr. President, I am not bound by diplomatic restraints. I am talking only for myself. I think you should cut and cut cleanly. I think the time has come." There was a long pause. Then Laxalt asked, “Mr. President, are you still there?" “I am still here, senator," Marcos replied. "I am so very, very disappointed.” Thus, the longest presidency in Philippine history came to an end. The Marcoses were flown to Hawaii in exile. Marcos died in September 1989 leaving the fabled Marcos loot behind for his heirs. Marcos also left behind billions of dollars in real estate and business assets. But the Philippine government sequestered them all. Although some have been sold, a large number remained unsettled. National politics And this is where Imelda and her two children, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Imee Marcos, have inched their way to national politics, while retaining complete control of politics in their home province of Ilocos Norte. Currently, Imelda is in her last term as congresswoman of the Marcoses’ bailiwick, the second congressional district, while Imee is serving her last term as governor. Both will be termed out in 2019. Then what?

Meanwhile, Bongbong, who lost to Vice President Leni Robredo in the 2016 elections, has protested the results of the election to the Supreme Court working as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET). At one time it was rumored that the PET will declare Bongbong winner without the benefit of a recount. But how can the PET make a ruling without a recount? There were talks that the Marcoses bribed some justices to do just that. But it must have fizzled out since the PET started recounting a pilot area comprising of three provinces. The recount is still ongoing. However, depending on the outcome, a full recount is very much likely to happen, which means it won’t be completed until after the 2020 elections rendering it moot and academic. If that would be the case, Bongbong -- hedging his political future on the recount --would be out of the presidential race. And this is where his sister Imee would come in – she would run for president. And that’s probably the reason why she is running for senator in 2019, a stepping stone to the presidency. Recent polls showed her in 7th or 8th place among the senatorial wannabes vying for 12 seats. Battle royale The question is: whom would she be facing in the 2022 presidential elections? Who comes to mind are Vice President Leni Robledo, Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Sen. Grace Poe, and the President’s daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio. There could be more; but these aspirants, in my

Will Imelda’s conviction bring down the Marcoses? opinion, are now weighing their chances. But because of Imee’s support among the formidable Marcos loyalists and her mother’s vaunted mega-wealth, she’d be put on the top tier of presidentiables, a battle royale between Robredo, DuterteCarpio, and Imee Marcos. But Duterte-Carpio, too, has a very strong backing from her father’s loyalists, the more than 16 million who voted for him in 2016. She can add her growing base of loyal followers. She can be very formidable indeed. Robredo, being the incumbent vice president, is presumed to have the support of those who voted for her in 2016. She narrowly defeated Bongbong, which is now the basis of Bongbong’s electoral protest. With the conviction of Imelda, the millennials could be turned off and put their support behind Duterte-Carpio who had proven that she could be as forceful – if not more forceful – than her father. And this is also where “blood is thicker than politics” plays an important aspect in the presidential election. Indeed, Duterte -- whose alliance with the Marcoses is strong -- has no other option but to get behind his daughter’s candidacy. As they say, nothing is permanent in politics. Strange as it may seem, your friends today could be your enemies tomorrow; and your enemies yesterday could be your friends today. It’s a strange world indeed. Wrecking ball And this where this writer believes that the conviction of Imelda would affect the upcoming battle royale. Could it be that

there are powerful people who are trying to discredit Imee by way of Imelda? Could the conviction be used as a wrecking ball to demolish Imee’s presidential aspirations? As opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros said in a statement, “I hope this ruling would serve as a crucial electoral guide to our voters this coming election.” It’s interesting to note that Imelda still has all the political connections and topnotch legal representation to influence the corruption cases against her. The fact that none have succeeded in the past 32 years is a testament to her inherent power to avoid convictions until now, which begs the question: Where did the judge who convicted her get the courage to convict a high-profile and seemingly untouchable defendant? Just imagine the tremendous amount of pressure the judge was subjected to rule for acquittal. Indeed, looking at past court decisions, no judge had the cojones to declare Imelda guilty and issue a warrant of arrest. This time the court found her guilty of seven counts of graft -- after a trial that took 28 years to prosecute -- each punishable by a minimum of six years in prison. She was sentenced from a minimum of 42 years to a maximum of 77 years in prison for making seven bank transfers totaling $200 million to Swiss foundations -- which the Marcoses opened in 1968 in violation of the Philippine Constitution -- during her term as Metro Manila governor between 1972 and 1984. She’s also automatically disqualified from holding any public office. That means that she

FilipinoJournal.com

cannot run for her daughter Imee’s governorship of Ilocos Norte, which she filed her candidacy last October. It is expected that Imelda would file a motion for reconsideration. And if the judge sustains Imelda’s conviction, she could then appeal to the Court of Appeal and if that fails, then it goes to the Supreme Court. It is interesting to note that the Sandiganbayan (anti-graft court) had once convicted Imelda of graft in 1993, but the Supreme Court overturned the anti-graft court's decision in 2003; thus, saving her from a 12-year prison sentence, which begs the question: Would the current Supreme Court do the same thing for her? Indeed, the Supreme Court also did the same thing for Gloria in 2016, after she was detained for several plunder cases against her in 2011. Presidential reaction In reaction to Imelda’s conviction, Duterte’s spokesman, Salvador Panelo, said: “While we note that there are still legal remedies available to Congresswoman Marcos, this latest development underscores that our country currently has a working and impartial justice system that favors no one.” Panelo also said, “The ruling against Imelda Marcos was proof that Duterte ‘is not in the business of exerting undue interference or influence’ on courts, and he respects the decision.” The hidden message is crystal clear – Duterte isn’t prone to support Imee. At the end of the day, one wonders: Will Imelda’s conviction bring down the Marcoses?

benefit concert aimed at raising funds for the victims of Typhoon Ompong particularly in the Cordilleras was held on November 11, 2018 at the Maples Collegiate Commons in Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. Dubbed “Bangon Cordillera,” the event gathered Winnipeg-based Pinoy performers coming from various regions in the Philippines joining front act band of the Gangsa Rhythm Band. Atleast seven other groups serenaded the crowd despite the cold Sunday afternoon after a late flurry of snow that day. Organized by the Association of Cordillerans in Manitoba, the funds generated by the event will all be Personally turned-over by its president Juliet Flores who is now in Baguio City coordinating with the government agency tasked to identify the beneficiaries. At least $3500 was raised thru the event. Target beneficiaries will be the victims mostly in Benguet after several areas were devastated by the supertyphoon on September 11, 2018. Diverse Food Canada

I

t started as just a live video on FB of Winnipeggers Alfonso and Milan doing conversation. Then the camera accidentally moved and focused on the food that they were eating. It is now the viral Diverse Food Canada which gets viewed by thousands of people. Alfonso is amazed by how their simple videos are making impact. “The videos are without effects and gimmicks, it is just Milan and me eating the food. Our faces are not shown, viewers just see our hands and the food, as plain as that. In 15 minutes, the views balloon to at least two thousand. People are thanking us. Those in charge of the kitchen in their home get ideas on what to cook. A mother is thanking us because the sound we produce with the utensils touching the food, and with our

teeth sinking into what we eat, they trigger the appetite of her picky eater child”. Alfonso said that his millennial nephew has the explanation about the effect on people of their eating spree. “My nephew told me that it is like MUK BANG, the videos of Koreans eating by the bulk. Such activates the AMSR or the Autonomous Meridian Sensory Response. The sounds we make while eating our food are causing satisfaction and enticing listeners to crave. And this caters to the generation Z people. We have Generation Y, Generation X, millennials, and now the generation Z who are always on their headset while at home, on the bus, everywhere. They are very sensitive to the sound they hear. That is the future of advertising”.

Food businesses are gaining well from inviting Alfonso and Milan to simply try their food. The videos get shared on social media hundreds of times. The next moment, the restaurant’s phone won’t stop ringing from orders and inquiries. “We started of course from Filipino businesses. They are those selling spring rolls, lechon belly, etc. Then other cultures took notice, we received invitation from big names in the food industry, one is a major Canadian fast food chain. There were also Ukrainian, West Indian, Jamaican restaurants that hosted us. Of course, there was one who saw the potential and offered us to make money out of it. We said ‘No’. It is something we do for free. Many restaurants invite us because they want to grow their business, however

budget is a problem. We feature the restaurants for free, also their specialty food. We are doing it for passion, fun and to give back, that trinity. I you complete that you are happy. If passion is gone, you are working. If fun is gone you are bored. Giving back to the community is a way of thanking people”. “We go live daily for 10 minutes, because people’s attention span is just 15 minutes. There is no contest or game to attract viewers, it is just food and eating, that simple. The FB metric engagement for our live videos is high. Insight is at 75% to 80%, that is comparing engagement vs just visit. Visit is you just viewed it for 10 seconds, insight is you became an engaged user and you

viewed the entire video. It only means that Diverse food Canada really draws interest and is very effective. As we always put as hashtag – We eat for your success. Despite success, since we started just last summer, nothing is changed in the program.” Alfonso and Milan are both excited about the big things ahead. ABS CBN will feature them in its Balitang North America. A major event is being cooked also for their first anniversary next summer where all the restaurants that hosted them will be put together at Gold Eyes football field for free eating feast. To contact Alfonso and Milan, simply visit their FB page Diverse food Canada and message them.

Health Matters with Dra. Denise – Cannabis: The Low-Down on Getting High (part 1) Kumusta kayo! Let’s talk about cannabis, aka damo, joots, chongki, maryjane, tiririt, greta, pito pito, doobie, etc. Why so many Filipino terms? Well, according to Wikipedia, it is the second most used drug in the Philippines, after shabu (methamphetamine).

Although some say “everyone uses cannabis”, Manitoba surveys have shown that approximately 55 % of people have tried cannabis at some point in their lifetime. However, in 2017, 80% of Manitobans reported that they had not used it in that year.

As many may know, on October 17, Canada became the second country in the world (after Uruguay) to legalize recreational marijuana, likely triggering our nation’s biggest public policy challenge in decades. It is helpful to look at the issue through a health lens, rather than a justice one: while cannabis has risks, legalization will most likely lower these risks and not make things worse. In other jurisdictions, for instance, legalization has not been shown to increase cannabis use. And regulating the drug supply makes legal cannabis outlets and their products much safer than the black market. Health outcomes can be improved by making it easier for those dependent on cannabis to get help. Also, legalization can alleviate the major negative health impacts of having a criminal record associated with cannabis. Cannabis refers to the buds or flowers of the Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica plants. The cannabis plant contains hundreds of chemicals. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that makes people feel high; it can cause feelings of wellbeing, relaxation and increased appetite, but also paranoia, anxiety, and depression. CBD (Cannabidiol) has medicinal qualities to help manage pain, nausea, inflammation and anxiety, but doesn’t make people feel high. Different products have different amounts of THC or CBD. The ratio of CBD-to-THC

concentrations can affect how the product will make a person feel. Cannabis is most often smoked (yosi, reefer, pipe or bong), but can also be vaporized using either the dried flowers of the plant or concentrates (currently prohibited for sale). When smoking or vaporizing cannabis, the effects appear quickly, will be fully felt within five minutes, and can last for up to six hours. There is no scientific evidence to support the common belief that holding the smoke in your lungs makes the effects better. Instead, holding the smoke in your lungs potentially increases any damage to your lungs. Edibles are foods that are cooked with the active ingredients in cannabis dissolved into fats and oils. When consuming cannabis edibles (eg. tsongkilate, etc), the effects take more time to appear – between one half to 2 hours-and can come on quite suddenly. Unlike smoked/vaporized cannabis, the effects of edibles can gradually intensify hours after they start and may not come on all at once. It can take up to 12 hours or even longer before the effects

FilipinoJournal.com

of edibles wear off. The more you consume (or the more THC in the product), the stronger the effects. The effects also depend on mood prior to using it, the setting, and the variety of product used. Short-term Effects Cannabis can: ·increase the risk of a heart attack in the first hour after smoking cannabis ·trigger a short-term psychotic episode (paranoia, hallucinations), or an anxiety attack if taken in high doses ·impair your ability to drive a vehicle or operate machinery ·make it harder to remember things or make decisions.
