Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice Ron Cantiveros

I

ron@filipinojournal.com

t's pumpkin season! The weather in Winnipeg has been simply amazing and its the middle of October. All across Manitoba, there's no shortage of pumpkins and gourds at supermarkets, pumpkin patches and farmer's markets. The pumpkin spiced lattes are now available at Starbucks and more coffee retailers are offering the seasonal favourite until Halloween. It's harvest time and the gourds are everywhere! In early October, we took a drive out to Roland, Manitoba for the Roland Pumpkin Festival to check out this year's set of monster pumpkins. The winning pumpkin at this year's festival weighed in at over 1,297lbs. Do you know how many pumpkin pies you could bake, or how many Pumpkin Spiced Lattes at Starbucks? Lots.

Closer to Winnipeg, the stalls at the St. Norbert's Farmer's Market are overflowing with gourds - pumpkins for carving and decorations and squash varieties for pinakbet and soups. Check out the monster squash in my photos. On the north side of Winnipeg, up on Henderson Hwy just past the Perimeter Hwy is Schwabe Pumpkins. It's a great little pumpkin patch with hay bale characters and great for family photos. Gourds of all varieties and all sizes are available for everyone to pick through. I even picked up a pumpkin toque as I checked out with several pumpkins for an upcoming carving project. Lots of fun to be had in the pumpkin patch. Happy Halloween and if you see the Great Pumpkin, take a selfie.

Koro Bulakeno to visit Winnipeg during Canadian Tour Auring or Aurelia Salungsawa, 32, is the woman with a giant mole on the sole of her feet; hence, the famous Filipino adage that “ang taong may nunal sa talampakan ay layas seems true in her case. Auring is perennial traveler; a jetsetter who never missed an opportunity to travel abroad. She has been in different countries as student, as missionary, as participant of seminars, conventions, religious pilgrimages, as overseas Filipino worker, as businesswoman selling imported goods from Hong Kong and as winner of all contest possible which prizes include trips overseas. If she would have been not less than 5’4, she would have volunteered as soldier to Afghanistan or Iraq. Every possible chance to travel outside the Philippines endlessly excites Auring and she has come to know more and even love the countries she has invited. She knows Hong Kong or Bangkok more than Manila or Cebu. She loves kimchee than bagoong and prefers the coffee shop of Paris rather than the carinderia.

The scene opens one cold day in Vancouver, Canada, 8:00 a.m., Auring is bound for the Philippines after a two week vacation tour in Canada which she won in a contest of a chewing gum product. From the taxi to the airport until she boards the airplane. She will come to meet several Filipinos who have been longing to go home to their family, community and traditions back in the Philippines. She realizes that they are more knowledgeable of the country than she. They missed the balut, the banig, the Manila traffic, the jukebox and the everyday songs--the music of the tropics, the people and the motherland. These Filipinos overseas will reintroduce her to the beauty of her country which she has not discovered nor valued for a long -long time. The scenes shall be delineated through Filipino music from various period of history tracing its development through times. On the last scene, Auring is glad to be coming home to her own country, at last.

Wag Ka Na Rekwés; Kiníg Ka Na Lang A New Venue for Local Filipino Bands and Understanding Live Music

P

laying gigs for local Filipino bands in Winnipeg has always been a challenge. This is primarily due to the lack of venues to play regularly at and also for the seeming scarcity of Filipino music listeners who have the ear for live music and the patience to listen to new, original music. Kabayan Bar & Grill (64 Keewatin Street) So, for both local Filipino bands and enthusiasts of live music, rejoice! Winnipeg has a new Filipino-managed venue that hosts live bands on weekends

(Fridays and Saturdays): Kabayan Bar & Grill, located on Keewatin Street near Notre Dame Avenue. The recently opened nightspot is a good opportunity for local Filipino bands to showcase their skills, talent, and music. I hope that the manager/s of the venue would be patient enough to support these local bands regardless of their music styles until the Filipino community catches up and develops the ability to appreciate original live music. Many music lovers always expect that bands could easily perform whatever song they

request from them. They fail to realize that members of bands are not like jukeboxes or karaoke machines that could churn out flawlessly whatever song they want them to play with just a combination of numbers and letters on the controller. They are ignorant to the fact that for a band to be able to play properly a song in a live setup, members have to spend countless hours to study

October 20-November 5, 2014

their respective parts and for the whole band to practice together. This should not be the case. For our community to produce and develop good bands and original music, we should let bands grow and flourish on their own accord. We should let bands choose the music—whether covers or original—that they want to play. Music is music whatever the type is. And live music could be very expensive. So when it’s free, take advantage of it and be grateful for it. Stop requesting too much. Just sit back and relax,

while drinking your bottle of beer or sipping your glass of iced tea. Enjoy whatever kind of music the band is playing. And, no matter how busy you are chatting with your friends, don’t forget to clap your hands and say yeah after every song. Bands that have already performed at Kabayan include Fhamathou, Traffic Jam, Fhazzmado, and members of Immortal Sacrament, Ethnica, Transfusion, and haLf man haLf eLf.

BreakOut West: An inspiring weekend of music by Tiffany Ponce

T

he 2014 BreakOut West Music Festival and Conference was held in Winnipeg from October 3rd to 5th. It is an annual event that has been going strong since 2003, giving music artists and industry professionals from Western Canada the opportunity to learn, grow, and build relationships through panel discussions and networking opportunities. The last time that BreakOut West was in Winnipeg was in 2006. This was my first time taking in the event, and I was a joyful sponge throughout all of it! I have been to other festivals and conferences outside of Winnipeg and for me, this was the best of them all. The conference took place at the Fairmont Hotel in the daytime and covered such topics as songwriting, promotion, touring, publishing and licensing, and more. Industry professionals from not only Canada but all over the world were there to offer their knowledge and insight through the panels as well as one-on-one mentoring with individual artists. One of my favourite sessions

was "Murphy's Law", a frank and impassioned crash course on how to write a hit song by successful songwriter, author, and music publisher Ralph Murphy. Another great session was on music placements for TV and movies, with discussion from various music supervisors from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The festival took place during the evenings at venues throughout Winnipeg, with performances by artists from all over Western Canada. I was able to take in the Hip Hop Showcase at Ozzy's as well as catch fellow Pop/R&B singer Inez Jasper at Le Garage Cafe. The weekend capped off with the Western Canadian Music Awards Gala at Club Regent Event Centre. Hosted by CBC Radio personality Grant Lawrence, the gala recognized artists from many different genres of music. A highlight of the night was when hometown hero Fred Penner was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He took the stage with his children for a wonderful rendition of his classic tune "The Cat Came

Back", filling the audience with nostalgia and prompting many to sing along. It was a great ending to an exceptional, educational, and inspiring weekend of music!

Purisima’s bad karma

W

hen President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino forced then-Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Nicanor Bartolome into retirement prior to the 2013 midterm elections, little did he know that Bartolome’s replacement would also be pressured to retire early in 2014. Yes, the current PNP Chief Alan Purisima is being eased out to make way for his would-be successor to take over in time for the 2016 presidential elections. That was the same reason why Bartolome was pushed out the door; that is, to make way for Deputy Director General Purisima to take over police matters at the soonest to prepare for the May 2013 elections, which makes one wonder: Why was it necessary to elevate Purisima to the top job when P-Noy could have allowed Bartolome to stay on the job until the ban on appointments during the election season had passed, which was just a few weeks after Election Day. Why the rush? Could it be because of Purisima’s close personal relationship with P-Noy while Bartolome’s relationship with P-Noy was purely professional?

It is interesting to note that Purisima’s ties with the Aquinos go back to the time of P-Noy’s late mother and then-President Cory Aquino, whom Purisima served as a member of the Presidential Security Group (PSG). Friend and protector But what sealed the strong bond between P-Noy and Purisima was when P-Noy’s vehicle was ambushed near Malacañang on August 28, 1987. It was said that Purisima was part of P-Noy’s security convoy when it was ambushed by rightwing rebels led by then-Colonel (and now-Senator) Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan. Five bullets hit and wounded P-Noy, but three of his bodyguards were killed. And who would have been the “best” replacement for Bartolome but someone whose ties to him were as tight as the Gordian knot? But “best” didn’t necessarily mean possessing unmatched qualifications and unquestioned integrity. When Purisima started his stint as PNP Chief, he seemed to be doing just fine and staying out of trouble. But barely a year on the job, allegations of

irregularities and corruption surfaced. And when pictures of his “vacation house” in Nueva Ecija made it to the front page of major newspapers, all hell broke loose! Immediately, Purisima’s friend and protector -- P-Noy -came to his rescue and vouched for his character, saying that Purisima is “not capricious” despite the socalled “White House” inside the PNP compound where he resides and the pompous “vacation house” in San Leandro, Nueva Ecija and his fleet of expensive cars that he purportedly purchased at a discount. Built on a 4.7-hectare estate, Purisima’s “vacation house” includes a separate pavilion, separate four-car garage with quarters, a huge swimming pool, and luxurious features and amenities. Purisima claimed that his property was valued at P3.7 million as declared in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN); however, his complainants say that the property’s actual price could be more than P50 million. The question is: How did Purisima amass such wealth when his salary was only P107,000 a month? In spite of P-Noy’s defense of Purisima, some powerful people want his head chopped. And these are people who belong to P-Noy’s Liberal Party (LP). They want him to retire early to accommodate another member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1981 to which Purisima belongs, which begs the question: Why do

they want to get rid of Purisima one and a half years before the 2016 elections? Could it be that his incompetence and expensive lifestyle might hurt the LP during the campaign that they want him out of the limelight? Scandals galore One of the scandals that is eroding the people’s confidence in the PNP is the widespread “hulidap” cases where an increasing number of police officers are involved in kidnapping for ransom activities. Purisima is perceived to be too lax in stopping these criminal activities in the police force. Another scandal was the controversial renovation of the “White House,” which is Purisima’s residence inside Camp Crame. What is being questioned was the source of the P25 million Purisima used to upgrade the White House. He claimed that three donors contributed “building materials” while some sources said that Purisima’s fellow Masons donated the money. But what is not being discussed today is: Who are the government officials – from the President down to the Barangay captains -- who are receiving jueteng payolas? One President who had received jueteng payola was former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada who was exposed by his former “bagman,” exgovernor Chavit Singson. In the early days of P-Noy’s presidency, allegations of jueteng

15 payolas were made against thenDeputy Secretary of Interior and Local Government Rico Puno. The payolas were supposedly for P-Noy; however, Malacañang denied the allegations and that was the end of the controversy. But one thing that happened in P-Noy’s administration was that jueteng thrived. And according to many anti-jueteng activists, the PNP can stop jueteng in a day! But the order must come from the PNP Chief. While previous PNP chiefs were involved in scandals and controversies over the years, the degree to which they’re linked to criminal activities varies. But in the case of Purisima, in the short time that he’s been PNP Chief, he had waded into the murky waters of corruption. As of today, he’s facing three plunder and graft charges over his luxurious “vacation house” in Nueva Ecija, the questionable renovation of the controversial “White House” inside Camp Crame, and a scandalous deal with a courier service. However, like his predecessors, Purisima would most likely beat the charges against him, which begs the question: How do corrupt PNP officers pay for their betrayal of the public’s trust? As someone once said, “Nothing escapes the Law of Karma. You get from the world what you give to the world.” And thus far, Purisima has gotten a lot from the world but has yet to give back. That’s bad karma.

Anne Curtis’ US film to hit theaters Inigo Pascual admits undergoing DNA testing

A

ctress Anne Curtis stars in “Blood Ransom,” a paranormal romancethriller movie opposite American actor Alexander Dreymon, who played a recurring character in the third season of the FX series “American Horror Story,” as her leading man. Although she entertained thoughts of pursuing an international career, Anne said it’s hard to turn her back on her show biz commitments here. She added that she was happy with all the things she had accomplished in the local entertainment industry.

“Blood Ransom” premieres on Oct. 29 in the Philippines and Oct. 31 in the United States. Anne said she will go to the US for a week to promote the movie.

Inigo Pascual, the 17-year old son of actor Piolo Pascual, admitted in a TV interview that he undergone DNA testing when he was one or two years old. The test was earlier revealed by Chiqui Gonzales, the actor's sister, which Piolo later confirmed in a press conference. The US-based Inigo is currently in the country to

promote his movie “Relaks, It's Just Pag-ibig,” which is set to premiere next month. He said he didn’t know how to react about the issue, adding that he's ready for the intrigues and controversies in showbiz. Inigo also revealed that his father advised him to be patient and enjoy everything that's happening at the moment.

Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, the film grossed the local box-office by P121.13 million as of October 13. Francis Soliven, General Manager of Warner Bros. Philippines, said “Annabelle” surpassed the previous record by “Insidious: Chapter 2” at P113 after only 12 days of release. Annabelle Wallis (“X-Men: First Class”) and Ward Horton (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) star as the couple John and Mia Forms. Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard (“Twelve Years a Slave”) stars as Evelyn, a neighbor who owns a bookstore. The film is about a doll possessed by an evil spirit. Shimano Canadian Cyclocross Championships Elevates Annual Cycling Event Canada’s national cyclocross competition has a 25-plus year history. The 2014 Shimano Canadian Cyclocross Championships is the first edition to run as a three-day full-blown festival similar to big American events like Providence. On October 24 the Kick Cancer Cyclocross Derby launches the weekend with new programming in the shape of community races and clinics. Serious competition ensues with the Canadian Cyclocross Championships on October 25 and Manitoba Grand Prix of Cyclocross international UCI C2 race the next day. Title sponsor Shimano will provide neutral support throughout the weekend. The Forks in the heart of Winnipeg hosts the three-day festival. This popular gathering place showcases shopping, dining, and cultural attractions

Malacañang not so keen to send Ebola health workers Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said no decision has been made on sending health workers to Ebolahit countries, adding that the government is more anxious with stopping the entry of the virus to the country. Coloma said President Aquino has ordered the study of other ways like the giving of donation and other means of assistance. He added that the other priority of the government is to protect the health and ensure the safety of Filipinos in Ebolahit countries like Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. A total of 1,755 Filipinos are in Ebola-stricken West Africa – 1,044 in Sierra Leone, 511 in Guinea and about 200 in Liberia. To give them some tools in the decision making process, we are giving them some inspiring thoughts to effect some creative and bold actions which are necessary ingredients to go forward in this ever-changing world of ours.

"We have an obligation and a responsibility to be investing in our students and our school. We must make sure that people who have the great desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible." President Barack Obama. Although this message is intended to the American people, its meaning is universal; and this must be the guiding principle for the decision makers who will take leadership in our school system. And ponders on the following quotations:

Some inspiring thoughts for our kababayans who are running for school trustees on October 22, 2014 Cory Juan, Julie Holland Javier, Jerry Medina and Michael Pajemolin will make big differences in our school system "The task of modern education is not to cut down jungles but to irrigate deserts." C.W. Lewis or "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." W.Butler Yeats; and "Intelligence plus character that is the goal of education." Martin Luther King, Jr. and " Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela; and examine this: "It is easier to build strong children than to repair a broken men." Frederick Douglas; and watch this instinctively: "If education is expensive, try ignorance." Derek C. Bok; or "If a man neglects education, he walks lame to the end of his life." Plato The four kababayans, Cory Juan is running for a board of trustee position in the Seven Oaks School Division, Ward 2.(Maples, Amber Trails and Riverbend) And being a re-electionist, she wants to continue her work to effect more changes in the school system. She has been very active in the Seven Oaks School Division and currently the vice president of the Manitoba School Board Association. Cory Juan has been working to do better to improve the quality of Public Education for the sake of the students by: 1) equity and equality- equal representation of staffing including teachers, maintenance, clerical services and others; 2) mental health and active transportation to enhance better and healthy living; 3) paradigm shift- programs that include technology, vocational courses, adult learners and strategies that improve universal learning/ teaching designs to meet the 22nd century;4) continue to network collegially with the different levels of government to procure equal funding for students; and 5) improving the preservation of our heritage culture, values that promote social justice Cory Juan says: " I have the right attitude, great commitment and enthusiasm (A.C,.E.) to actively collaborate and cooperate in achieving our goals and priorities of the Seven Oaks School Division Division. As the Vice-President of the Manitoba School Board Association, I am aware and well-versed of the issues of public education. We are here to improve the quality of education for the sake of the students. And this what John F. Kennedy stresses: "Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities because in each of us there is a private hope and dreams which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefits for everyone and greater strength for our nation." "Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself." John Dewey or "The foundation of every state is the education of its youth" Diogenes. Canadian Filipino Associations Inc. (MaCCFA), member of the Winnipeg City Equity Committee, Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, and one of the two candidates in Winnipeg School Division Ward 6, ( North of Sargent Ave., Notre Dame, Exchange District, St. James: part of Pt. Douglas and Daniel McIntyre wards) has found time to be active in the various communities in spite of demand of her job as a health care professional. Being her first time to challenge herself as a trustee, Julie Javier has strongly advocating empowerment among the students to achieve their full potential in a global society. She says: To achieve this, we have to start a solid and strong foundation of early education, good citizenship, effective shared responsibilities of parenting and of the school system; to prepare, motivate and encourage each children to reach his or her potential within the safe, caring and cooperative environment." When asked by the seniors on what the school system would serve them, Julie says: " Schools are not only for the young, but also for you.' And she will initiate wellness and health programs for the community at large especially for seniors. And this defines what Henry Ford says: "Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young." And Julie H. Javier has to initiate across the board nursery and kindergarten programs, try to learn from Gandhi: "To reach real peace in the world, we will have to begin with the children." or what Dalai Lama says: "Children are our greatest untapped resources." "Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each." Plato Jerry Medina is running as trustee for the Winnipeg School Division Ward 5 - (South of Sargent, Ellice and Portage Ave.). As an active volunteer, Jerry Medina is so passionate in basketball, a major sport event in the Filipino community, when he founded IKAW. "In my 22 years of experience as a basketball commissioner, I have been involved in running a FREE community basketball tournaments for the kids. We want our kids to be involved, and help other kids out of the street. I would like that the School Division to actively encourage greater community use of school facilities and gyms. There should be no empty gyms on the weekends, weekdays, either for basketball, soccer of volleyball." A business man and pre-plan counsellor, Jerry Medina wants to encourage more youth in sports esp. basketball. "Lets get them

active at a very young age," Medina says. And this true that Plato says: "You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversion." and for the young player, Plato says: "Never discourage anyone who continually making progress,no matter how slow!" Michael Pajemolin, active member in Migrante Manitoba, volunteer, HOPE Worldwide Canada, Winnipeg Chapter; and board member, Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, and endorsed by labour council, is running for a school trustee, Winnipeg School Division,Ward 9 (Tyndal, Garden Grove, Burrows, Old Commonwealth, Prairie Rose) Michael Pajemolin brings a vibrant perspective to servant leadership. He had 10 years of experience developing programs and services that empowers youth that are out of school. Having experienc volunteering as a teacher he sees the important of Quality Education and the Wellbeing of Teachers and Students. He says: "Being a parent myself, I envision an empowering partnership between the School Board and the community." As a community activist, Michael is passionate in advocating human rights and welfare of people around his circle of influence. As somebody who not only has read and study the philosophy of grassroots but has lived it, Michael Pajemolin will make sure that the residents of Ward 9 will have a voice in the Winnipeg School Division's decision making process. As what Nelson Mandela says: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." And try to examine this line: " One of the penalties of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by inferiors."Plato. And to give more insight, "Learning is not attained by chance,it must be sought for with ardor and diligence." Abigail Adams; or think what Herbert Spencer says: "The greatest aim of education is not knowledge by action." And get this: "If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway." Mother Teresa. And be inspired by what Aristotle says: "The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweeter. And from Pope Francis, he says: "Do not bury your talents the gifts that God has given you. Do not be afraid to dream of great things." The last but not the least: As Plato says: "In politics we presume that everyone who knows how to get votes knows how to administer a city or state. When we are ill, we do not ask for the handsomest physician or the most eloquent one." And "Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway." Mother Teresa.

ne glance at this picture and it would seem to most that our community has degraded into a wasteland of crumbling infrastructure, garbage and decay. It would appear that we have ceased to care about our image, our vibrancy, or our future. Rather than face our challenges directly, this portrait suggests that we have grown apathetic and have turned a blind-eye to

the trash and illegal dumping that has devastated our community in recent years. However, this assumption could not be further from the truth. Horoscope You’ll enjoy the period ahead because it brings a chance to relax and assess your progress regarding a key relationship. If last week brought a few changes, you now get the chance to consolidate your affairs and reflect on what’s best for you. However, there’s also a fun aspect to this period that’s great for spending time with friends and generally relaxing. Your lifestyle options are up for review, which could lead to some interesting changes. This week’s blend of energies encourages you to create routines that build health, bring satisfaction, and allow you to live life to the fullest. You may look to new ideas or philosophies to give you some pointers on this. However, you might also want to head to the kitchen and consider how a change in diet could boost your energy and the feel-good factor in no time. If you’ve been very busy, perhaps you should consider a spa day or at least a massage and the chance to ease off the accelerator. Social options look fairly upbeat, bringing new friends and connections your way. Whether you seek romance or more business, the current lineup brings a chance to enjoy both. You might find one person particularly stimulating and want to connect with a view toward collaborating on a creative project.

PAHALANG

The starting of this period might try to flow you along with emotions. However, doing important tasks will provide you with the satisfaction of your soul. You will get chances to attain profits, although, you should not be very sure about it, as this might get compensated with heavy expenses.

This coming weeks lineup may help you decide, as it emphasizes your pet loves and hates and encourages you to indulge in activities that make your heart sing. Personal issues, plans, and projects are helped along by a fun blend of energies, meaning that the input of friends and loved ones could enhance your prospects and help expand your horizons.

Keeping on good terms with friends, family, and neighbors makes good sense this period, when you can benefit greatly from an easygoing approach. Should you encounter any delays, your optimistic and energetic approach to life will help you circumnavigate problems and focus on the positive.

Don’t do anything too risky during this period. If you crave something reckless, satisfy it by watching a movie with lots of car chases. Your softer, sweeter side can find a tough-as-nails way to express itself, and you can greatly impress absolutely everybody.

If you let your intuition help you with financial decisions, you could do well. You may be eager to purchase items for your home or invest in anything that improves your quality of life. However, you’ll benefit from information, courses, and even gadgets that can enhance learning, health, and your overall life balance. In addition, if you haven’t gotten around to removing clutter from your home, start now.

Positive social vibes bring you plenty of opportunities for fun and romance. Plus, the words of a pal might motivate you to follow a dream, giving you the encouragement and push you need. Whatever your relationship status, you’ll likely find the week ahead enhances your bond and enables you to enjoy each other’s company.

The more time you take to help others in your same profession, the more you’ll benefit. The little things like everyday warmth and human kindness can be what help the wheels of commerce turn in your favor. In addition, you’ll likely find that pooling resources, working as a team, or collaborating on certain plans can double your chances of success. It’s possible you’ll also be in the spotlight, so enjoy it!

Camaraderie and pleasant connections make this the time to count your blessings. Input can be uplifting and encouraging, with a focus on moving outside your comfort zone and exploring delightful social options that can open new doors for you. You might go to a reunion or decide to arrange one. Perhaps an opportunity that you thought you’d lost will come around again, enabling you to grab it. Going out on a limb can certainly bring new developments your way.

One of the more sensitive zones of your chart is in focus, leading to sensual opportunities and many intimate moments. You might find the week ahead encourages you to get up close and personal with someone you’ve admired for some time. Opportunities to find a fun and challenging job or career may arise, but you’ll need to stay alert to find them.

Winnipeg Jets Report by Derick Ramos @DerickRamos

Measuring Up

T

he Winnipeg Jets kicked off the 2014-2015 campaign on a three game road trip on the west coast against the Arizona Coyotes, San Jose Sharks, and the defending champions, Los Angeles Kings. For the Jets to make any noise in the playoff race this year, they have to address the issues from last year that plagued them when trying to gain points on teams ahead of them in the Western Conference.

31

The Pulse of the Filipino Community since 1987

Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little ignited the Jets to a 6-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes in their regular season opener. Wheeler scored twice in the first period and Bryan Little scored his second of the game on a shorthanded marker in the third period to seal the victory. The win was a costly one as winger Evander Kane collided with teammate Mark Scheifele forcing Kane to leave the game. Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec

was solid in net stopping 26 of 28 Coyotes shots. The San Jose Sharks provided a much stiffer challenge devouring any momentum the Jets could gain. Coming off a shutout against the Los Angeles Kings, the Sharks continued their suffocating ways blanking the Jets 3-0. Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist and goalie Alex Stalock turned away 30 shots to hand the Jets their first loss of the season. Penalties hampered any chance for the Jets to get in the game. "We had to spend almost an entire period in the penalty box," coach Paul Maurice said about the five straight penalties in the third period. "We can't spend so much time in the box." Winnipeg had little time to lick their wounds taking on the defending Stanley Cup champion, Los Angeles Kings, the following night. If the game against the Sharks and Kings were any indication on how the Jets stacked up to the elite teams in the West, they have their work cut out for them. Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli led the charge with a goal and an assist each as the Kings dominated the Jets 4-1. Backup goalie Michael Hutchinson got the start in between the pipes but was pulled midway through the second in favour of Pavelec. Kings goalie Martin Jones was stellar stopping 29 of 30 shots. The Winnipeg Jets will head back home where they hope the hometown crowd will energize them on a five game home stand. Their first home game will see them take on their Central division rivals, the Nashville Predators.

Mayon’s eruption imminent

R

esident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said the lava flow observed at the eastern side of the Bonga Gully, or facing the Legazpi City side of Mayon Volcano yesterday morning, may indicate that an eruption could be forthcoming. Laguerta said the lava flow shows that there is pressure-buildup underneath the restive volcano. He added that the occurrence of increased seismic activity may

force them to upgrade the alert status to Alert Level 4, which means that a hazardous eruption is imminent within days. Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) also said that the quiet lava flow yesterday is a manifestation of high unrest inside the volcano. Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said evacuation have already

been completed with more than 12,500 families, or more than 55,000 people, currently housed in 48 evacuation centers in Albay.
