A

Oops! They Did It Again (In Fairness with Celebrity Pop Artists and On Discouraging Music Discrimination)

A

bout 15 years ago, when my younger self’s love for music was still considerably immature and discriminatory, I usually dismissed Celebrity Pop artists as wannabes and their music unworthy of anyone’s attention. When I say Celebrity Pop, I mean music recorded by celebrity personalities who are more famous as film or TV stars—like Mandy Moore and Scarlett Johansson—or whose rise to popularity originated from TV singing competitions like American Idol—such as Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert— or whose fame is marred with scandals and controversies—like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Even without having the chance to listen to them first, ordinary music listeners are quick to claim that these performers and their respective music are crap and a waste of their time. However, to a true music enthusiast, consideration for such artists is warranted; because a true music enthusiast does not discriminate and, for him, music is music whatever its origin. When You Dismiss Particular Genres of Music, You Are Committing Music Discrimination Whatever negative remarks other journalists and music lovers might have to say about Celebrity Pop artists, I still regard their music as legitimate music because I don’t discriminate music. I regard all genres of music—from Hiphop to Black Metal and Classical to Celebrity Pop—as cultural mementos that can give me a glimpse of a particular society or era. Also, I am able to separate the personal lives of such artists from their art—films or music, enabling me to experience unbiased and utmost listening pleasure. Like for instance, despite the controversies hounding Miley

Cyrus or Lindsay Lohan’s current serious ‘rehab’ problems, I could still enjoy listening to their music. Regardless if the songs in the albums of the socialite Paris Hilton and the former adult-film actress Traci Lords were written for them by commissioned songwriters, I can still appreciate their music to the fullest, untainted by their controversial misadventures in life. Comparing Genres Subjectively Prevents One from Experiencing Music to the Fullest Many Celebrity Pop artists may have become popular or more known for other areas of art like acting or singing (in contrast with songwriting) and may have started their careers by joining TV competitions, but to try their hands in recording and releasing music remains their right as artists, and I respect them for that. But don’t get me wrong! I am not implying that the music of Miley Cyrus is equal to that of, say, Queen or Michael Jackson or Emerson, Lake & Palmer especially in terms of production or the songwriting process; but what I’m trying to say is that comparing music in a negative way (based on genre, originality, or other personal biases) can prevent one from enjoying it to the fullest. For instance, if you’re a big fan of complex music like Progressive Rock or Classical, you don’t need to compare this subjectively with music from less complicated genres like Punk, Pop, or Hip-hop if you decide to try listening to these styles; because if you do so, it will prevent you from appreciating forms of music other than your favorites. Then, you reduce yourself to a biased and hypocritical music lover. Don’t you want instead to be called a consummate music enthusiast—someone who can listen passionately to all kinds of

music without prejudice? Besides, can you stand up and honestly proclaim that your own life is squeaky free of any deficiency? Would you like people to reject what you are offering or selling them just because they found this little flaw in your personal life? This is nothing different with Celebrity Pop artists or any other artists for that matter, who are hoping that people will respect or at the least appreciate their art or craft (i.e., movies or music) despite any shortcomings in their personal lives. Some Celebrity Pop Artists and Their Music with Notable Songs In fairness with many Celebrity Pop artists, they are involved also in the songwriting process of some of their songs— whether lyrics or additional melodies or chord progressions. Traci Lords: 1,000 Fires (1995, “Fly,” written by Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie of Thompson Twins) Mandy Moore: So Real (1999, “Candy,” written by David Rice and Mark Stevens), I Wanna Be with You (2000, “Lock Me in Your Heart,” written by Tony Battaglia and Shaun Fisher), Mandy Moore (2001, “When I Talk to You,” written with Matthew Hager), Coverage (2003, “The Whole of the Moon,” original by The Waterboys, written by Mike Scott), Wild Hope (2007, “Can’t You Just Adore Her?”, written with Lori McKenna), Amanda Leigh (2009, “I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week,” written with Mike Viola of Candy Butchers) Kelly Clarkson: Thankful (2003, “The Trouble with Love Is,” written with Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken), Breakaway (2004, “Since U Been Gone,” written by Lukasz Gottwald and Max Martin), My December (2007, “One Minute,” written with Kara DioGuardi, Chantal Kreviazuk, and Raine Maida), All I Ever Wanted (2009, “Already Gone,” written with Ryan Tedder) Lindsay Lohan: Speak (2004, “Anything but Me,” written with Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks), A Little More Personal (Raw) (2005, “Confessions of a Broken Heart [Daughter to Father],” written with Kara DioGuardi and Greg Wells)

Audra Mae, Mark LinnBaker, Johan Fransson, Tobias Lundgren, and Tim Larsson), The Gift (2010, “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” original by Crowded House, written by Neil Finn) Final Note I used to laugh at and negatively criticize types of music that I didn’t like. But as I grew older, I have learned to appreciate and experience music in all its genres. I think this is a mark of a true music enthusiast. I believe that anyone who harbors discrimination against music is not different from someone who criticizes people because of their race, gender, or religion. To be able to appreciate music to the fullest is a skill not acquired overnight; it is an ability learned and developed through years of listening to different genres of music. If you feel that you haven’t reached that stage yet, you can start your musical journey by respecting at the least the music of Celebrity Pop artists and the songs’ respective songwriters (not necessarily the artists themselves).

akas Party vice president for policy, Nueva Ecija Rep. Rodolfo Antonino has denied insinuations that the proposal to amend the Constitution is not a strategy by congressmen allied to former President Gloria MacapagalArroyo to bring her back to power as president or prime minister. Arroyo, now a member of Congress representing the second district of Pampanga, still has 70 partymates at the House. However, Antonino said the alleged plan to use

Charter change to return Mrs. Arroyo to Malacañang will not prosper since 68 congressmen are already supporting President Aquino. The President has opted to distance himself from the move to amend the Constitution although he has not expressed objection to it. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile for his part said he would support convening the Senate and the House into a constituent assembly that could work for Charter change.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com

Brouhaha over P-Noy’s Porsche “Aquino gets himself a new toy–a Porsche,” headlines a newspaper. Instantly, the news report spread like a virus in the social networking media like Facebook and Twitter. And once again, denizens of cyberspace had a heyday criticizing President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III, this time for buying a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera sports car. IN an attempt to control any damage from this latest “fallout,” P-Noy emphasized that it was a “third-hand” used Porsche he bought for a bargain price of P4.5 million only. But Mr. President, a Porsche is a “Porsche” and it’s emblematic of the “creamiest of the cream of the crop” in our society. Indeed, driving a Porsche is unlike driving a Mercedes Benz, BMW, Lexus or Jaguar, which are expensive cars but are common sights on the road so much so that they don’t even attract any attention. But a Porsche 911 sports car, especially the Turbo Carrera that P-Noy bought, would raise eyebrows and elicit gasps from onlookers especially when it makes that awesome “turbo” noise when revving or accelerating it. P-Noy driving a Porsche reminds me of spoiled rich kids speeding at 150 kilometers an hour in the expressways. Indeed, P-Noy is like a spoiled rich kid who has grown but refuses to grow up. And that seems to be the message he conveys to the public when he acquired his latest toy. Exclusive Porsche Club In 1991, three friends who owned Porsche 911 would get together every Sunday morning to drive their Porsches from the Manila Polo Club down the South Super Highway to Canlubang or Puerto Azul and back to Manila Polo Club in time for breakfast. Pretty soon other Porsche owners joined in their “Sunday runs.” The following year they incorporated into the Porsche Club Philippines. To date, their exclusive

– and elite -- club has grown to 58 members who own a total of 174 Porsches among them. At one time their membership grew to 70 with each member owning an average of 3.5 Porsches (source: www. porscheclubphilippines.com). Should P-Noy join this very exclusive club, he may have to buy a few more Porsches just to keep up with the members. Criticisms P-Noy’s critics include political leaders, sectoral and civil society leaders, and the clergy. Even the youth did not approve of his purchase. Kabataan Party-list Rep. Raymond Palatino, who represents the youth in Congress, said that P-Noy was being insensitive to the plight of his people. In a statement he released to the media, Palatino said, “The sheer insensitivity of President Aquino is breathtaking. He burdens the people with toll, fare and price hikes. He wants us to be calm about the increases as he delights himself with a luxury sports vehicle.” Palatino hit the nail on the head when he said, “It would appear as though the President is very much deserving of relaxation while the people have to suffer from the increases. His display of wealth is a troubling reminder of the wide disparity between the rich and poor in the country.” Critics also reminded P-Noy that only last month, he issued a memorandum “prohibiting all agencies from acquiring and using luxury vehicles for their operations, and to be more prudent in spending government funds, especially in the acquisition of motor vehicles to maximize the utilization of scarce government resources.” However, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda was quick to defend P-Noy saying that he did not violate the memorandum because he used his own funds to purchase the Porsche. Huh? Mr. Lacierda, you don’t get it, do you?

The real issue The real issue is not whether P-Noy used his own funds to buy the car or not; it’s a question of appropriateness: Should the country’s leader live in pomp and splendor while the poor are suffering the pain of poverty and the gnawing pang of hunger? Porsche symbolizes the lifestyle of the rich and powerful class of our society. Driving fast sports cars while the poor are eating “pagpag” and scavenging in garbage dump sites reminds me of the vainglorious Marie Antoinette when she told the French peasants to eat cake when she heard they didn’t have bread. On a more serious note, there is the question of the car’s provenance. P-Noy claimed that he bought the “third-hand” Porsche Turbo 911Carrera for P4.5 million from his personal funds. However, according to Manila columnist Ernesto M. Maceda, Porsche enthusiasts who hang out at Burgos Circle at Global City said, “that 2nd hand Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera would sell at P7.5 million, definitely, not P4.5 million as President Noynoy claimed.” Indeed, Maceda had several unanswered questions: How much did P-Noy really pay for it? Or was it really a gift from some big, rich businessman friend? P-Noy should now reveal who sold it to him and how he paid for it if he did, by check or in cash? Did he check if it was tax paid? Did it enter the country thru the port of Manila, Cebu, Subic or Cagayan CEZA? And, interestingly, Maceda added, “Chris Tiu, the biggest ‘importer’ of Porsche and other luxury cars thru the Port of Cebu has been appointed vice president for marketing of Pagcor. That’s a great leap from car salesman to vice president for marketing of a P100-billion corporation.” Coincidence? Or… Facebook buzz The buzz going around in Facebook is that P-Noy did not buy that Porsche; it was a gift from an architect friend of his who would benefit from “cornered” government contracts. Now, what the hell does “cornered” mean? While I tend to believe that PNoy is fundamentally honest and incorruptible, things like this could put a dark cloud over him; thus, casting a shadow of doubt on the “honest and incorruptible leader” that he

projects himself to be. The last thing P-Noy would want to happen early in his administration is to create the perception that he is no different from his corrupt predecessor. And like his predecessor, once that perception is created in the people’s minds, it stays there for a long time. Indeed, in politics, perception is reality. You are what you are perceived to be.

administration, buying things that smack of extravagance is sending the wrong message to the people who are pinning their hopes on the reforms PNoy promised to make. P-Noy told his subordinates to take a “matuwid na daan” (straight path) in the performance of their job. By the same token, P-Noy’s “boss,” the Filipino people, expect him not only to take a “matuwid na daan” but – more importantly – to lead by “Matuwid na daan” example and in the same lifestyle his And at a time when the people live by. country is barely surviving from Mr. President, please don’t let the excesses of the previous Arroyo your people down.

Bob Arum sees a rematch if Mosley upsets Pacquiao

T

op Rank head honcho Bob Arum has the right to promote Mosley’s next fight. This provision gives Arum the option to arrange a return meeting between the two protagonists in the unlikely event that Pacquiao loses, sans a rematch clause in their contract, Pacquiao is heavily favored to beat the American fighter in their welterweight match scheduled on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Filipino boxing icon has scored

tremendous victories in his recent fights while all Mosley could show in his last two outings was a defeat in the hands of Floyd Mayweather and a drawn match against Sergio Mora. Arum however still considers the 39-year-old Mosley a very dangerous fighter that must not to be taken lightly since he hasn’t been knocked out. Pacquiao’s conditioning coach Alex Ariza also agrees, saying Mosley is capable of doing a big upset because the stakes are too high.

Troublemaker vs. Troubleshooter

A

battle royale is looming on the horizon between P-Noy’s Chief Troublemaker, Rico E. Puno, and his soon-to-be Chief Troubleshooter, Mar Roxas. It would make the gunfight at OK Corral look like kids playing “Bang bang you’re dead!” during school recess. Well, let’s see who’s going to win: Rico the “Chief Troublemaker” who’s good at shooting or Mar the “Chief Troubleshooter” who’s good at making trouble. Indeed, trouble is brewing again between Mar’s “Balay” faction and the “Samar” faction. With P-Noy’s “shooting buddy” Rico leading

the “Times Street” faction, it’s going to be a three-way labo-labo among P-Noy’s groupies. Meanwhile, Rico is missing! Nobody has seen him since the August 23 Luneta bloodbath and the “jueteng payola scandal. The buzz is that since P-Noy doesn’t have the heart to fire his “shooting buddy,” he transferred him to the government’s special “15-30” program; that is, he shows up every 15th and 30th of the month to pick up his paycheck. It seems like the “Balay” faction was rooting for Atty. Romulo Macalintal to be appointed the next Comelec chairman while

the “Samar” faction was rooting for Atty. Sixto Brillantes. Well, these are two good lawyers but Macalintal was linked to ex-prez Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as her “troubleshooting” election lawyer. “Hello Mac”… A consortium of several groups, including the watchdog “Kontra Daya,” released a statement saying: “While Atty. Macalintal is viewed by many as a ‘competent’ election lawyer, his consistent defense of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the fraudulent results of the 2004 elections and the succeeding ‘Hello Garci’ scandal in 2005 do not make him fit for the job.” Hmm… Wouldn’t that be likened to President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III appointing Don Vito Corleone’s consigliere as the Ombudsman? I bet that Gloria must be tickled pink at the prospect of Macalintal getting the powerful post. I can just see Gloria calling, “Hello Mac.” But Sixto is P-Noy’s man… The truth of the matter is that Sixto Brillantes will be the next Comelec chairman. Poor Mac was thrown into the desert to attract the vultures and distract them from attacking Sixto. Indeed, Machiavelli is back in the game -- the end justifies the means. And P-Noy is learning fast! Yup, just like driving a Porsche in the fast lane – it’s aphrodisiac. P-Noy’s new toy… All P-Noy wanted was to trade in his karag-karag BMW for a third-hand Porsche sports car for P4.5 million and now he’s in big trouble with his “boss,” the Filipino people. Little did he know that a “cheap” used Porsche would create trouble. Yup, buying a Porsche while the poor were eating “pagpag” reminds me of Marie Antoinette telling the hungry French people to eat cake. P-Noy was probably thinking of impressing his girlfriends driving them around at 150 kilometers an hour at Roxas Blvd in the wee hours like those spoiled kids of rich people. Yup, P-Noy is like a spoiled rich

kid who has grown but refuses to grow up. Now, there’s a question about the provenance of his new-used Porsche sports car. He claimed he bought it for P4.5 million but there is a buzz going around among Facebook denizens that P-Noy did not buy that Porsche; it was a gift from an architect friend of his who would benefit from “cornered” government contracts. Now, what the heck does “cornered” mean? Hmm… No! No no no! I don’t believe that. People say that PNoy is honest and incorruptible. Besides if he did something like that, it would be in billions, not a “cheap” third-hand Porsche. But like they say, “everybody has a price.” It’s just a matter of how much you’re worth. And if you asked Gloria, whew, $20,000 dollars (P1million) for dinner at Le Cirque in New York City would just be for starters. The Joker is wild… A word war erupted between Sen. Joker Arroyo and Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV over Sonny’s expenditures. Joker’s peeve was that Sonny spent P21.136 million in 2009 while he was in detention for rebellion charges. Trillanes’ expenditures made him the fourth biggest spender in the Senate, behind Sen. Jinggoy Estrada (P21.7 million), Sen. Gregorio Honasan ((P21.6 million) and former senator and now President Benigno Aquino (P21.5 million). Sonny’s defense was that his expenses went to salaries of 44 staffers while Joker had only three. Sonny said his staff filed 347 bills while Joker filed none. Eighteen of Sonny’s bills passed and became law. Sonny said that Joker, in all his 18 years as a legislator, failed to file a bill, and yet spent P15 million in 2009. “Where did he spend that?” asked Sonny. Sonny said that makes Joker the “laziest.” Ugh! That hurts! And all Joker could say was: “Why should I be bothered by a mosquito.” Hehehe… If there’s one thing that Joker wouldn’t deny, he’s wild... like a wild turkey. He can be acey, he can be deucey; but he can’t have what Sonny has, cojones hard-boiled during seven years of detention. The third highest spending senator in 2009 was then Sen. Benigno Aquino III who spent P21.5 million. In the three years that he was in the Senate, P-Noy filed nine bills. It’s not clear how

many of his bills were passed into law. But that’s a moot point cuz he’s now the Prez. Lessons of the story… (1) He who talks the loudest is the laziest, (2) He who spends lots of money is the top producer, (3) He who has cojones always wins the argument, and (4) He who does not perform moves up to the top of the heap. That’s Pinoy politics. No guts, no glory… Rebel officer Lawrence San Juan refused to apply for amnesty because of the amnesty requirement that he admit guilt. Instead he wants the judge to promulgate the verdict. If the verdict is “not guilty,” San Juan will be a free man. If the verdict is “guilty,” he will be incarcerated for a long time. He’s what I call a man with steel cojones. Gung hay fat choy… It’s in the news: “P-Noy is mulling declaration of Chinese New Year as holiday.” P-Noy seems to bend over backwards just to please our giant neighbor. First, he boycotted the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony on Oslo to accede to China’s demand. And now he wants to pay tribute to China by commemorating their New Year. P-Noy won’t run again… Yup, that’s what he said, “I will not to seek election for any other political post in 2016.” Well, there was more to it than that. My investigative reporter James Macaquecquec told me that he got a scoop from insiders that the reason P-Noy won’t be running again is that he’d like to spend the rest of his adult life driving his Porsche. P-Noy’s latest statement to the media seems to collaborate what James told me: “My reflexes might not be the same 10 years from now. I will not be [limited to] playing video games just so I could experience that [rush of driving a sports car].” Indeed, P-Noy has three loves in his life: fast cars, guns, and video games. There was a story during the 2010 presidential campaign when P-Noy’s campaign entourage was taking a break somewhere in Bulacan. P-Noy was closeted in his trailer alone for two hours while everybody else was hanging around outside. My source, who was a campaign volunteer, asked one of the top aides what P-Noy was doing inside the trailer all by himself. The top aide told him that P-Noy was playing with his Xbox 360. Indeed, with P-Noy’s Porsche, his “shooting buddy,” and his Xbox 360, he’s got everything he needs to enjoy la dolce vita of the rich and famous.

Far from Quiet by Joan Duhaylungsod

Tired of winter? Let’s discover Caramoan

W

hen it is winter time and it is as cold as minus 30, we usually crave to fly to a warmer place like the South America, or Australia, or Asia. We want to be caressed by the gentle breeze coming from the seas. We want to feel the warmth of nature, spend our time outdoors, without having to put our winter coats and snow boots on. Unfortunately, sometimes career demands prevent us from flying somewhere and experience the sun. Hence, we stay in cold Manitoba. Being confined indoors though, can somehow release the power of imagination and reminiscing. It seems to give us “travels for free”. Then, I remembered one of my getaways last year in the Philippines. Have you ever heard of Caramoan Islands? The Caramoan Islands are quite isolated yet still part of the Camarines Sur, in the Philippines. It will take you at least eight hours on a bus trip to travel from Manila to Naga City, the capital of Camsur, and two more hours by boat to reach Caramoan. I traveled by plane from Manila, thus it only took me thirty minutes to reach Naga City. At first glance, the Caramoan seemed to be a typical town in the Philippines, but when my friends and I reached the Gota Village Resort where we stayed for three

days, I was surprised to know that here’s a place, seated peacefully in the southern part of Luzon, promising a world-class tourism, and revealing another God’s amazing creation. Chasing “ Survivor” If you’ve been watching the Survivor TV program, you must be familiar of this place. To date, five countries have already shot their Survivor episodes here- Bulgaria, France, Serbia, Sweden, and Israel. Being a venue for the Survivor episodes, Gota Village Resort is not open to the public all year round, as the program sometimes reserves the place for their video shoots. (Currently, they are open to the public until March 31 this year and until their next notification). I was amused finding myself in the Tribal Council area, a venue where Survivor’s tribemates vote one person out of the tribe. I also wore that immunity idol necklace, which has always been a most-wanted possession among the participants to bargain for alliance or for voting purposes during the game. You would see more of the props the show has used in its past episodes, and would make you recollect the adventures and challenges of the participants to survive in the wilderness.

Island- Hopping The Caramoan boasts its beautiful and unsullied beaches. There are top ten must-visit islands in the peninsula but I`ll pick three as my personal faves. Gota beach is one of my favorites, and it is where we stayed for three days. The island has been prepared to accommodate visitors and guests, coming from different parts of the world. The Gota Beach resort features a community of relaxing and homey cavanas, instead of typical hotel room accommodations. Meals are prepared a la carte, and boy, they got my two thumbs up as to the food taste! For three days, my friends and I felt we were regal. The staff attended well to our needs. Sure they were friendly and complaisant. Another island that I liked was Matukad Island which features, aside from its wonderful waters, an enigmatic lagoon surrounded by big boulders. Though unsafe, my friends and I climbed up the 90-degree stiff rockies with just our flipflops on and no harnesses nor ropes at all, just to see the lagoon. I was stunned by the peaceful, clear lagoon. It was enchanting. There were fishes swimming unreservedly, like royalty strolling around their kingdom. I`ve never seen any lagoon as untouched as what I saw in Matukad. My third pick is Hunungan, another developed island which also has rest houses, but are more expensive compared to the cavanas in Gota. According to the folks of Hunungan, the exiled tribe members of the Survivor show usually stay in this island until the taping of the episodes is finished. Well, I think spending your time in Hunungan is more than a consolation prize!

Ocean and Outdoor Adventures If you like adventures more than dancing in the bars, I bet this is a good place for you. If you are a beach bum, you can do snorkling, kayaking, and even scuba diving in some parts of Caramoan. You can also do other beach games here like volleyball, Frisbees. You can also just collect shells, cover a friend with sand, or build your own sandcastle. As the place offers a variety of options for outdoor enthusiasts, Gota also is a place for camping, trekking, spelunking, and rock-climbing. My friends and I tried trekking and rockclimbing. It was around five in the morning when we climbed off to the Gota mount. The heavy rain made the soil slippery to walk on, and trails more difficult to track. After an hour trek, we reached the top of the mount where the five flags of the countries which joined the Survivor are waving freely. We were overlooking the Caramoan Peninsula already. It was definitely breath-taking.

9

We were fortunate to have tried rock-climbing too, while we were in Gota. The resort’s management have hired four people from the locale, trained in Thailand on ropes and rockclimbing, to facilitate the activity. We started with Grade 4+, and after we conquered that level, moved on to a higher and more difficult Grade 5 which, if my estimation serves me right, is about 20 meters high. My activities, though tiring, were indubitably fun! In Caramoan, there`s just so many things to do that a “dull moment” would not be in your lexicon. So I hope, my article took you to the warm and relaxing Caramoan, even just for several minutes. But if you ever have the chance to visit Philippines, make Caramoan part of your itinerary. Not too exploited by commercial tourism, this place is definitely a haven for those who want to experience nature at its best.

The Wonders of Syria

W

e visited the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world as pilgrims and tourists - the oldest because Damascus, the capital of Syria and its largest city with about 4.5 million people was established between 10,000 to 8,000 B.C. Syria may not be a popular tourist destination. However, this Middle Eastern country has so many historic places that will let you travel timelessly. Once the centre of the caravan trade between the East and West, Syria is one of the earth’s most ancient inhabited places. First Day - October 7 - We visited the National Museum of Damascus where exhibits are organized into five wings - prehistoric age, ancient Syria, classical age, Islamic Age, and the Image Gallery. The “Street Called Straight” is still here. It is the Roman street that runs from east to west in the Old City of Damascus. “Straight Street” is mentioned in the story of Apostle Paul’s conversion to Christianity in Acts 9 of the Bible. Don’t miss the Souq (market) al-Hamidiyya, a broad street packed with tiny shops, smell of cumin and other distinctive spices. At the end of the souq stands the great Umayyad Mosque, the most well-known of the more than 2,000 mosques in Damascus. An architectural wonder, it is unique in engineering and decrations. Built by Umayyad Calip Al-Walid in 705 A.D., the grand mosque has four doors, three minarets and has four spacious halls. In the courtyard there are three domes - money domes, clocks dome and a dome over the fountain in the middle of the courtyard. Located in the gardens just outside the mosque is the Mausoleum of Salah al-din, known in the west as Saladin, the chief anti-crusader. Day Two - October 8 - We made the trip to the ancient Aramaic city of Maalula located

about 50 kms. northeast from Damascus. A predominantly Christian village with a population of 2,000, Maalula is the home of two ancient Christian monasteries, Mar Sarkis and Mar Tagla. This magnificent village is the only place in the world that still speaks Aramaic, the language of our Lord Jesus Christ. You’ll see houses, constructed of stones with flat beam roofs, are built on the slopes of a huge cirque of rocks that encloses the village. We also visited the St. Thecla Monastery, a blessed place where people from different religions come to gain blessings and to make offerings. A must-see is Palmyra, the magnificent ruins of a Roman city in the middle of the desert. The most striking building in Palmyra is the huge Temple of Ba’al. The second most noteworthy remain is the theatre. The colonnaded street leads to the rest of this ancient city. Day Three - October 9 - One of the premier tourist attractions in Syria is the “Krak des Chevaliers”, popularly known as the “Castles of the Knights”, widely recognized as the archetypal Crusaders Castle. “Krak” means fortress. The Krak is described by T. E. Lawrence of Arabia as “perhaps the best preserved and most wholly admirable castle in the world”. Part of a defensive network along the border of the old Crusader states, the fortress was the headquarters of the Knights Hospitalier during the Crusades. It is a medieval military castle. Last but not the least is the ancient city of Bosra in southern Syria, home to the largest, most beautiful and well-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world. A major archaeological site, Bosra has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. The most ideal time to visit Syria is October.

ORONTO, Canada, January 13, 2011 – As shows of all genres like Mara Clara, Imortal and TV Patrol continue to lord it in the nationwide and Metro Manila TV ratings in the Philippines since last year, ABS-CBN shows on The Filipino Channel (TFC) in Canada promise to be even bigger and brighter in 2011. Consider the following that are set to premiere in the first quarter of the year: a newly buff Gerald Anderson tries to cement his title as “Action Drama Prince of the Philippines” as he plays the lead role in popular komiks writer-llustrator Rod Santiago’s Buhawi Jack. Gerald had to get in the best physical shape of his life and learn the Filipino martial art of arnis for the realistic fight scenes in the new series. Paired with him is the newest star of the TFC stable of talents, Jewel Mische, who also trained for arnis. Then Gerald’s equally famous and former on-and-off screen partner, Kim Chiu, the country’s formidable “Primetime Drama Princess”, finds a new leading man in Agua Bendita standout, Matteo Guidicelli, in the upcoming drama romance set in the streets of Manila’s Chinatown: Binondo Girl. After their successful team-up in the historical film, Baler, Anne Curtis and Jericho Rosales reunite on the small screen for the Philippine adaptation of the hit koreanovela, Green Rose. Joining them are Jake Cuenca and Alessandra De Rossi. A promising new teleserye is set to unfold and brings with it an all-star cast: Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin (I Will Only Love You Once) is topbilled by Lorna Tolentino, Coco Martin, Andi Eigenmann and Maja Salvador. Providing more star power is the supporting cast led by Tonton Gutierrez, John Estrada, Boots Anson-Roa, Ronaldo Valdez and Amy Austria. All these new shows are made even more exciting with the availability of TFC’s Video On Demand Service (TFC VOD). Now, subscribers can play, pause, rewind and fast-forward all TFC shows at their convenience. Not only do they get to watch TFC when and how they want it; with the archived content feature, they can revisit and watch episodes from the beginning of past and ongoing shows. Thus, with TFC VOD, subscribers will never miss any episode of their favorite shows. Using broadband Internet technology (with a minimum speed of 2mbps), TFC VOD subscribers can choose to watch TFC on TV via IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) for as low as $19.95 under the Lite Package. So that more TFC fans can avail of the TFC VOD service, ABS-CBN Canada has extended its Regalong Pampamilya Promo until February 28, 2011. Customers who avail of this promo will enjoy a 50% discount on the set-top box (STB) and will be shipped to them for free. For more information, call 1800FIL-CHNL or contact a TFC Dealer nearest you.

ctress Angelica Panganiban and boyfriend Derek Ramsay have been together for more than three years but the showbiz couple is in no hurry to settle down. Instead, they will adopt a baby in deference to Ramsay’s wish to have a child even before getting married. The actress admitted that she and her boyfriend differs on the issue as she opts to get married first before having a child. She also said she sees nothing wrong if they will adopt since she is an

howbiz newcomer Solenn Heussaff wrote a sarcastic letter to a French network for the “bimbo” tag given to her by a documentary titled “Stories of Gangsters, Drug Lords, and Bimbos.” Solenn said she is not inclined to take legal actions against the French network that aired the said show as she wants to start the year on a positive note. She admitted however that she got offended because the documentary implied that she and her friends are bimbos. She added it was her family even helped the French production do the documentary in the country. A bimbo is defined as an attractive but unintelligent woman. She said the eye surgery is necessary as she had difficult time recognizing people’s faces. She was even labeled as a snob by some members of the press whom she failed to recognize at once because of her eye problem. She said she had no intention of hurting anyone when she uttered a line during the ASAP rehearsals last year that sparked Reyes’ angry tirades. She said she will reveal more about the issue when the right time comes. The 22-year-old actress added she’ll prove wrong Reyes’ accusation that her good image is just a front. Geisler’s manager, Arnold Vegafria on the other hand, said that a copy of the complaint letter has yet to be received by his party. Incidents of Geisler’s alleged sexual harassment involvement have been the subject of media items for quite a time already. Similar complaints against the actor were filed in the past by William Martinez and Yayo Aguila’s daughter Patricia, Julia Clarete and Yasmien Kurdi. As of this writing the actor has not given his side of the story.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Horoscope Your career and your social life are bursting with positive energy. You need to deal with some romantic or financial trust issues concerning a friend, colleague, or Internet entity, but otherwise, things are progressing quite nicely for you.

This would be a great month for you and you are on a roll now! You need to make sure that you remain nice & considerate towards others throughout this month as you could earn the disrespect of people close to you.

You will have a magnetic personality and a charm on your face throughout this month. New relationships could move towards commitment now.

Lack of compassion, dissipated energy, and weakened intuition interfere with your ability to help and heal others. This is a time when insensitivity prevails in the home and there is confusion over who is to provide the security and care in order for the family unit to operate functionally.

You are also beginning to feel more adventurous and as if it is time to embark on some kind of literal or figurative journey. You are correct, it is time for you to spread your wings and broaden your horizons. Find something fascinating to lose yourself in.

This would be a positive month, although despite the positive events your mind would still remain unsettled and under pressure. You will be dynamic and very result oriented throughout this month.

You can feel very restless and bored with your current routines and daily responsibilities during this period. Your ideas and creative insights may be unrealistic or off the beaten track which causes disruptions and adjustments in your work, friendships or social liaisons.

There can be a desire to travel or enjoy outdoor activities with your mate. You may spend a great deal of time thinking about the future possibilities of being together and reflecting on all the big dreams and plans for tomorrow.

There are a few occasions when things get a little stressful while finances are discussed, but overall it looks like you are managing to juggle your romantic, professional, and financial goals without dropping the ball so to speak.

Money matters would be positive. You will have good gains this month, while liquidity will vastly improve after the 8th. Income will be quite positive too, throughout the month.

A great amount of understanding is required now in your marriage or close love relationship. Discussions are not as congenial and are apt to be filled with misunderstandings. Either you or your partner may feel nervous and insecure when an emotional or verbal connection is attempted.

You may need to take charge of an unsettled situation in your domestic life at this time. This period can indicate the need to establish guidelines and provisions in your home environment.

resident Aquino paid homage to the patron saint of Cebu by gracing the Sinulog Festival last Sunday in Cebu City. Aquino arrived at about ten in the morning prior to the start of the grand parade and street dancing featuring some 151 contingents. His running mate in last year’s election, Senator Mar Roxas was with him. In his speech delivered at the Cebu City Sports Center, the President exhorted the Cebuanos and everybody in attendance to pray to the Sto. Niño for protection against disaster and natural calamities. He also asked the people to pray for recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by the

recent massive flashfloods in various parts of the country. Aquino praised the Cebuanos for displaying unity to celebrate the Sinulog festival which he said is distinctly Cebuano. He also said the celebration showcased Cebuano values and beliefs that cannot be compared with any other festivities. Despite the incessant rains, thousands locals and tourists turned up to watch and celebrate the colorful festival. The President was welcomed by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Reps. Tomas Osmeña and Cutie del Mar and other city officials.

Susan Mendelson’s catering company, The Lazy Gourmet, is an award-winning Vancouver institution. Her new book, named for her company, rewards faithful customers with some of their favourite recipes: The Famous Lazy Gourmet Cheesecake, Lemon Citron Tarte, Veggie Burgers, and Carmelized Onions (a frequently used ingredient). The book was

written with Executive Chef Joey Cruz, who lived in Manilaand Singapore; the recipes have a global flavour, incorporating cuisines from east and west. Containing only a few ingredients, but lots of flavour, these recipes could come to be new versions of comfort food.
