Nadaya Ka Na Naman Ba? (On a Culture of Sour Grapes, Bitter Melons, and False National Pride)
I
n the Filipino community, the recently finished American Idol Season 11 has been equally popular and controversial, primarily because one of the contenders, Jessica Sanchez, who eventually became first runner-up to the winner, Philip Phillips—was half-Filipina. However, my article is not about who won or who lost and why. For me, a deeper issue underlying competitions like this needs to be hammered—that is, how people accept defeat and how they celebrate success. Win or Lose, Doesn’t Matter Anymore The criteria used in determining the winner is no longer relevant—be the judgment was based on the greatness of singing voice, ability to play an
instrument while singing, potential to write music and songs, stage presence, or popularity. Different people choose their personal bets for whatever reason—which include national or racial pride and crush on or affection for particular contestants. Whatever the reason for choosing is, there's nothing wrong about it. For example, I chose Phillips between the two, because I related more with Phillips in the aspect that I am also an artist—he plays an instrument and sings and he seems a songwriter too. Many people chose Sanchez because of loyalty to one's fellow compatriot, or national/racial pride; many others, for her great singing voice. But then again, these are not the issues; but rather how every individual reacted to the results.
Ability to Accept Defeat in Stride What's sad to realize is that there are lots of people who cannot accept loss or defeat in stride. They tend to react in negative ways. They seem unable to believe that one cannot win everything or win all the time; that sometimes one loses a fight or a game. And while one is better than another in certain areas, skills, or capabilities; the situation may be reversed—one can be less good than others. And there is nothing wrong about this. Those who cannot accept these realities often resort to sourgraping or bitterness—the usual reaction of sore losers.
To Mind or Not to Mind I don't mind if some people chose Sanchez because they loved her singing voice. I don't mind if many others chose her because of mere loyalty to one’s fellow compatriot (regardless if the affinity is not even a hundred percent—she is only halfFilipina—and, not to mention, if the other contender was more musically skilled). This is what is known as false national or racial pride—the tendency to favor or side with a fellow compatriot just because of the racial or national connection, disregarding objectivity. In the same manner that I don’t mind that Phillips was declared the winner, whatever the reasons of his supporters were. Sourgraping is an expression What I mind is the reactions of dislike for a certain thing or of people who are either sore the tendency to downplay it just losers or arrogant winners. because of the inability to achieve it. Examples of sourgraping: Sa Madaling Salita “Hmph! I don’t care if we didn’t Ang tamang reaksyon sa win; we were not really expecting bawat kumpetisyon—kalahók it anyway”; “I don’t care if we ka man o pawang mirón—e lost; Sanchez has already lots ang kakayanang tumanggap ng of recording-contract offers pagkatalo sa maayos na paraan anyway.” at kakayanang ipagdiwang ang pagkapanalo nang may Bitterness is a feeling of severe pagpapakumbaba at nang walang misplaced anger or disappointment bahid ng kayabangan. because of failure to achieve one’s goal. Examples: “The Or, in Simple Words judges were simply incompetent, I believe that the ideal the reason our bet didn’t win!” reaction to every competition, or “I don’t believe that we lost; whether one is a contestant or a the results were rather tampered; mere fan or spectator is to accept we were cheated! Sanchez was discriminated upon because she has brown skin!” Some even go to the extent of projecting their disappointment, frustration, and hatred on the obvious focus of their loss: “Oh, that trying hard and sympathyhungry Phillips...I hope he fails in his career!” Ability to Celebrate Success Without Arrogance In the same manner, many people could not celebrate success without the need to be arrogant: “Yeah, we won simply because we were the best!” Or, claim the win with a sense of entitlement: “It’s unsurprising that we won because that prize was really meant for us.” Some even go to the extent of turning their delight and excitement into taunting, mocking, or ridiculing the loser: “Good for you…you didn’t win! You don’t deserve it anyway!”

defeat or loss in stride and/or to celebrate success with humility, without any trace of arrogance or a sense of entitlement. Knee-Jerk Reaction However, there is also what we call a “knee-jerk reaction”—a negatively expressed initial reaction to an issue that is often caused by a surge of frustrated emotions. While this is understandable to some degree, a person guilty of this should be able to reassess her initial reactions. In Filipino culture, this is what we refer to as “padalusdalos na desisyon o reaksyon dahil sa bugso ng damdamin.” However, not everyone has that what I call a sense of concession, or the ability to concede, or admit that something is true or valid after first denying or resisting it. And this is what we refer to in Filipino culture as “kakayanang bawiin ang mga binitawan o nabitawang masasakit na salita o mga maling pananaw sanhi ng bugso ng damdamin; at kakayanang magpakumbaba, aminin ang pagkatalo o pagkakamali, o humingi ng dispensa matapos mahimasmasan at makapag-isipisip.” Ang nakatatawa pa nito, karaniwan e mas pikon pa ang mga mirón at amuyong kesa sa mga mismong kalahók sa kumpetisyon.

GDP growth surpasses expectations
T
he Philippine economy posted a growth rate of 6.4 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared to a revised growth of 4.9 percent in the same period last year prompting the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) to expect that the full year 2012 real GDP growth rate projection of 5.0 to 6.0 percent is well within reach, or may even be exceeded. NEDA reported that growth was driven by the services and industry sectors on the supply side and by net exports, household final consumption expenditure, and government consumption on the demand side. Growth for the quarter was supported by accelerated government spending (including for infrastructure and CCT spending), low prices which supported household consumption, better-thananticipated exports performance, continued credit expansion, continued robustness of remittances, expansion in the tourism sector, increased business and consumer confidence, and an overall buoyant domestic economic outlook. The recovery from a sluggish 3.7 percent growth for the whole of 2011 also reflects a renewed business confidence in the Philippines.
The NEDA also said the Philippines posted the highest growth among ASEAN and other neighboring countries except China. Socio-Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the growth benefited from a low inflation rate boosted by the revitalized services sector, particularly trade and other services. Balisacan also stressed the government will not let up in its efforts to accelerate the growth of the economy. There is still considerable room for faster acceleration in government spending. Also, the government will remain vigilant on the risks to growth, including those posed by the Euro Area he Business Processing rewarding careers in the country Virata added that new graduates Association of the Philippines instead of going abroad. and professionals don’t need to woes and the uncertainties in (BPAP) announced the BPAP senior executive go abroad for international, wellthe world price of oil, Balisacan opening of a portal that promised director Gillian Virata said the IT- paying jobs. Ambassador Gatan Leads Philippine Mission to the Canadian Prairies
P
hilippine Ambassador Leslie B. Gatan received the friendliest and highest of welcomes in the Canadian prairies provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan as he led an Economic Diplomacy and Consular Mission from 18 to 26 May 2012, comprised by officials and personnel of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto. The mission served to further economic and social linkages between the Philippines and the Canadian Prairies. “Friendly Manitoba” In Winnipeg, true to the fond provincial moniker, the highest officials of the province gave a true “Friendly Manitoba” welcome to the Ambassador and his delegation comprised by Jesusa Susana Paez, Acting Consul General of the Philippine Consulate in Toronto, Eric Gerardo Tamayo, First Secretary and Consul at the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, and Francisco Luna, Philippine Labor Attache based in Toronto. The Ambassador and his party called and met on separate occasions with the Hon. Greg Selinger, Premier of Manitoba, the Hon. Phillip S. Lee, Lieutenant Governor, the Hon. Darryl Reid, Speaker of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, the Hon. Cristine Melnick, Immigration Minister, Hon. Flor Marcelino, Minister for Culture, Heritage and Tourism, the Hon. Ted Marcelino, member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, and Mr. Hugh Eliasson, Deputy Minister for Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade. Manitoba has established itself as the leading Canadian territory that has actively sought and integrated Filipino migrants and temporary workers into Canada, which has in turn facilitated the elevation of economic stature of the province in the country. Over 70,000 Filipinos have settled in Manitoba over past few years under a model labor agreement between the Philippines and the province of Manitoba. The Hon. Selinger said Filipinos “have been nothing but a positive development” for the province for the last 50 years. Mr. Selinger remarked as to the extent of how the Filipinos’ passion for basketball has replaced games, such as baseball, in various sports and civic events in the province. According to the Premier, in any basketball game, the tall Canadians are simply no match to the quick Filipinos who have now come to call Canada their home away from home. While in Winnipeg, Ambassador Gatan and his party visited the facilities of Boeing Canada, and met with officials of Red River College and the University of Manitoba. The
team also visited the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals. The Ambassador also held talks with Mr. Graham Starmer, President of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce, who have assurances of support for facilitating business partnerships between Filipino and Canadian enterprises. The Filipino community in turn also gave the visiting delegation a warm “Friendly Manitoba” welcome, with a Filipino twist, which began at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and culminated in a meet and greet event at the Philippine-Canadian Center of Manitoba (PCCM). The delegations visit and mission was also facilitated with the help of various community leaders in Minnipeg. Acting Consul General Paez led a consular team from Toronto in provide consular services to the Filipino community in Winnipeg from 18 to 21 May 2012. “Land of the Living Skies” Ambassador Gatan and his delegation proceeded to the city of Saskatoon, where the infinite expanse of the terrain proved as dynamic as the vibrant hues, colors and character of the Saskatchewan sky. While in Saskatoon, the Ambassador and his party were joined by the distinguished FilCanadian citizen of Saskatoon, the Hon. Carlos Maningas, who is also the Honorary Consul General of the Philippines in Saskatoon, and Fay Vargas of the Filipino-Canadian Association of Saskatoon. On the invitation of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Saskatoon, Ambassador Gatan addressed the Chamber members as he highlighted the positive developments, the challenges and the inherent advantages of the Philippines as he stressed that Filipinos and Canadian are natural social, business and economic partners owing to their shared value systems. Mr. Ken Ziegler, Business consultant and partner at the GPC Capital Corporation, who moderated the open forum with the Chamber, also provided a compelling testimonial at expanding commercial and business ties between Canadian and Philippines companies. Mr. Ziegler exhorted his colleagues to look at the Philippines, not just as a source of migrants and laborers, but also as potential savvy business partners in a global economic environment. The delegation met with his Worship Mayor Donald J. Atchison, who also praised the influx of Filipinos as giving new life to Saskatoon, and remarked at how the social landscape of Saskatoon has been transformed. Ambassador Gatan and his party were also warmly received
by officials and Filipinos in management and skilled work force of the various manufacturing facilities they visited in Saskatoon, such as Standard Machines, a manufacturer of industrial gears, and Case New Holland, makers of agricultural machinery and equipment owned by Fiat of Italy. The group also visited the facilities of the Canadian Light Source (CLS) at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada's national synchrotron research facility, which is also the sole particle collider operational in Canada. The University of Saskatchewan itself, organized a warm welcome for the Ambassador and his delegation, during a meeting with the various heads of the agriculture, food, engineering, nursing, law and international programs department of the university. Corona’s ‘palusot’ implodes
T
he much-anticipated vote on the impeachment case against Chief Justice Renato Corona finally came to pass last May 29, 2012. It was supposed to be suspenseful to the very end with either side winning by a razor-thin margin. But as it turned out it was a massacre! Twenty senator-judges voted for conviction leaving the three die-hard Coronistas – Senators Joker Arroyo, Miriam DefensorSantiago, and Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. -- circling the wagon in a desperate attempt to defend the beleaguered Corona. The senator-judges were called one by one, in alphabetical order, to explain their vote. Sen. Edgardo Angara was the first to speak at the podium. Up until the last minute, political pundits identified Angara as leaning to acquit Corona, although his son, Rep. Sonny Angara, was one of the prosecution spokesmen. So, when he voted “guilty,” it set the tone for the day. Arroyo followed and as expected voted for acquittal. Then the siblings, Alan Peter and Pia Cayetano explained their personal reasons for their vote for conviction. Then came Miriam, feisty as ever, who delivered a 20-minute scathing attack on just about everybody… except Corona. She even used words like “kagaguhan” -- stupidity – in belittling the prosecutors and antiCorona senator-judges. Sen. Franklin Drilon followed Miriam. While he was explaining his vote, Miriam walked out of the trial room in disgust. She must have realized then that the battle was over. Yep, it was time to flee the battleground and leave the other Coronistas to fend for themselves. By the time Bongbong stepped up to the podium, the vote was running 11 for conviction and two for acquittal. With a conviction short of only five votes and 10 senator-judges still waiting to vote, Bongbong could have voted for conviction and he would have earned a lot of political chips. Or, better, abstained from voting, which would have the same effect as voting for acquittal. However, he stood firmly by Corona to the very end. Loyalty? I don’t think so. I think it was more like kinship to the issue of dollar deposit accounts.
1246 on November 21, 1977, which amended Section 8 of RA 6426 to read as follows: “Secrecy of Foreign Currency Deposits. All foreign currency deposits authorized under this Act, as amended by Presidential Decree No. 1035, as well as foreign currency deposits authorized under Presidential Decree No. 1034, are hereby declared as and considered of an absolutely confidential nature and, except upon the written permission of the depositors, in no instance shall such foreign currency deposits be examined, inquired or looked into by any person, government official, bureau or office whether judicial or administrative or private…” Absolute confidentiality But what was Marcos’ real reason when he issued P.D. 1246? Was he protecting the corrupt or -- as was officially postulated -- encouraging foreigners to invest in the country? That was then. But today, under the 1987 Constitution, does the “absolute confidentiality” clause allow public officials or employees not to disclose or report their dollar deposits in their Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN)? That was the gist of Corona’s defense. Claiming immunity under R.A. 6426, Corona hinged his final defense on R.A. 6426. During the last day of Corona’s two-day testimony on May 22 and 25, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano asked him some clarificatory questions. When Cayetano asked Corona how much unreported dollar deposits he owns, Corona answered, “$2.4 million.” When it was Sen. Jinggoy Estrada’s turn to ask clarificatory questions, he asked Corona how much unreported peso deposits he owns, Corona answered, “P80 million.” Corona insisted that R.A. 6426 supersedes R.A. 6713, which states: “Section 8. Public officials and employees have an obligation to accomplish and submit declarations under oath of, and the public has the right to know, their assets, liabilities, net worth and financial and business interests including those of their spouses and of unmarried children under eighteen (18) years of age living in their households.” But R.A. 6713 was enacted into law on February 20, 1989, twelve years after Marcos’ P.D. 1246, which amended R.A. 6426; therefore R.A. 6713 should prevail over the older R.A. 6426.
Article 11, Section 17 of the 1987 Constitution, to wit: “A public officer or employee shall, upon assumption of office and as often thereafter as may be required by law, submit a declaration under oath of his assets, liabilities, and net worth. In the case of the President, the Vice-President, the Members of the Cabinet, the Congress, the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Commissions and other constitutional offices, and officers of the armed forces with general or flag rank, the declaration shall be disclosed to the public in the manner provided by law.” The nagging question is: Should an older law amended by a presidential decree take precedence over a “sovereign command” of the Constitution? The 20 senator-judges seemed to be convinced that the Constitution has supremacy and primacy over laws legislated by Congress. Almost to a person, they voted to convict Corona based on his nondisclosure of his dollar and peso deposit accounts in violation of the Constitution. As Sen. Teofisto Guingona III said, “How can one man use the Constitution, which mandates full public disclosure, to conceal millions of dollars in his personal bank accounts? This is constitutional perversion in its ultimate form!”

Throughout his presentation, he used “palusot” numerous times, each time driving a nail into Corona’s coffin. Could it be that “palusot” was subconsciously translated to “guilty” in the senator-judges’ psyche? Indeed, “palusot” might have been what crossed the mind of Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. After the prosecution and defense teams made their closing arguments, Revilla informed top officials of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats that he was going to vote for conviction. It was said that Revilla, who is the President and Vice Chair of Lakas-CMD, decided to go with • Consolidate your debt the “emerging majority vote” • Reduce or eliminate because there were not enough interest costs senators to vote for acquittal. Speak with Your Eyes with Sublime Sincerity (On Poetry Writing as Both an Art and a Skill)
S
ome say that anyone who has a pen and paper and has something to say can write poetry. Yes, true, but only if the poetic form being referred to is free verse—a form of poetry that refrains from consistent meter patterns, rhyme, or any other pattern. However, a true master of poetry will disagree with that—s/he will insist that true poems follow strict structures and patterns, making poetry writing—like any other art—more of a skill than a hobby that which involves interest, willingness to learn its various forms and styles and the rudiments in writing poems properly, regular practice, and consistent engagement. I think so too—writing poetry is not just a whim or a simple hobby; it’s
a discipline that needs skills. Having said that, I write also in free verse but I prefer writing poems that follow structures and patterns—because this way, I can really apply my skills as a poet. I was in fourth-year high school, in 1988, when I started writing poems, as inspired by an English professor of mine. Naturally, I began with free verse; but being really serious about it, I honed my skills in writing poems in certain forms by reading a lot of poetry and by studying the subject itself. Among the various forms of poetry, the sonnet and the haiku remains my favorite.
I know just when you are far away; That is, when you are too near for me to be enthralled. I do nothing but close my eyes Whenever I wish to see you. I shut my mouth when I wish to converse For you speak with your eyes with sublime sincerity. A multitude of lovers had met their fall; Our love will catch our fall. Open your heart and I will enclose it with mine; Talk in rhyme and in one breath I'll sing it with mine. Sad songs will cease on the day you are mine.

Welcome Winnipeg Fashion Week!
by Tia Provici
B
ravo to Winnipeg's first ever fashion week. The conceptualizers, WFI also know as the Winnipeg Fashion Incubator wanted to create Winnipeg Fashion Week to open doors of opportunity for a wide range of initiatives for industry professionals to present high quality fashion experiences for a Winnipeg audience. The Winnipeg Fashion Incubator (WFI) was thrilled to see that the local fashion community came together from April 21 to April 28 to create the maiden voyage of Winnipeg Fashion Week. “We are very excited to see this happen. We’ve been working on developing our organization and see this initiative as a great opportunity for our members to get a boost in presenting their work to a local and national market. It gives us a chance to reach out to industry members as well” said Lili Lavack, WFI Co-President. Panache Model Management worked with the WFI to create a true industry style week of the many events under one banner. Panache and WFI wanted to best ensure that the tremendous talent and commitment of all of the people producing and participating in these shows got the exposure and recognition that they deserved. Winnipeg Fashion Week wants to annually raise awareness of the up and coming industry members as well as pay homage to fashion professionals.
The week included events presented by Panache, Von Wilde, WFI board member, Lennard Taylor, and other local fashion designers. After attending the runway shows, seeing photos of the gallery style in house show casings, and checking out the fashion parties, I'm personally giving you the scoop on the who, what, when and why. Also check out the fantastic Filipinos that were involved during the first ever Winnipeg Fashion Week. For more info on Winnipeg Fashion Week, check out the WFW event page online on facebook (http://www.facebook. com/pages/Winnipeg-FashionWeek/312646378796075), or email them at info@wpgfashionincubator. com. Jessica Sanchez a big hit in ‘Live! With Kelly’ Piolo Pascual is too busy to fall in “American Idol” runner-up Jessica Sanchez gave another outstanding performance as she wowed the audience during her guesting stint on the popular US TV show “Live! with Kelly.” Jessica sang one of her most popular AI songs, “I Will Always Love You.” After her performance, host Kelly Ripa noted that the show’s staff cried obviously carried away by Jessica’s powerful rendition of Whitney Houston’s song. Kelly added that Jessica is truly an American idol and even
asked the question why she didn’t won the competition. She also admitted that Jessica placed first in her heart during the season of ‘American Idol’ competition. On the way out of the ABC studio, her excited admirers and the paparazzi mobbed the petite 16-year old Fil-Am singer Aside from Filipino and American fans, Jessica’s supporters came as far as Canada just to see her. Jessica also performed at the National Memorial Day concert at Washington D.C. where she
sang the National Anthem. She also sang “The Prayer” and led the performers in the crowd in the closing song “God Bless America”. The young singer is scheduled to perform in Florida and on NBC’s “Today’s Show” on Thursday.

H
unk actor Piolo Pascual is loaded with too many projects of late to be able to even think of courting a girl, as he rebuffed rumors romantically linking him to “Dahil Sa PagIbig” co-star Cristine Reyes. Piolo said he is presently too busy juggling from one set to another though he admitted that it is inevitable for him and Cristine to know more of each other while doing the TV project. The 35-year old actor downplayed the odds of this friendship blossoming into something more intimate, saying he respects his friend Rayver Cruz who is currently Cristine’s boyfriend. Besides doing “Dahil Sa PagIbig,” Piolo has finished shooting for ‘Every Breath [You Take’].
He is also set to do a Star Cinema movie with Kris Aquino. Piolo described the film as something serious and even hinted that he and Kris will have some steamy scenes as husband and wife. Veteran filmmaker Chito Rono directs..
Eugene Domingo still dreams of meeting Jackie Chan
C
omedienne Eugene Domingo sounded serious when she said she wants to meet and do a project with her idol Jackie Chan in the future. News that Jackie Chan is retiring from action films soon has saddened Domingo but she said she is not yet giving up hope of personally meeting the martial arts superstar someday. It seems the idea of doing a project with Chan came about after Domingo’s trip in Hong Kong where she bagged the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Actress at the 6th Asian
Film Awards for her movie “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank.” The multi-awarded actress thinks Chan is a nice and funny person and does not conceal her admiration for his movies which have been consistent international hits. Domingo is now finishing a musical movie titled “I Doobidoobidoo,” which features the songs of the Apo Hiking Society. Her “Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme,” the sequel of her hit movie “Kimmy Dora,” will be showing in movie theaters soon.
Juris says marriage blends well with her singing career
S
inger Juris says her career is running smoothly as she entered her fifth month of marriage life as Mrs. Gavin Lim . In a TV interview, the former MYMP vocalist declared her happiness on her decision to settle down and build a family while still pursuing a career in the entertainment world. The singer admitted though that being married affected her demanding showbiz schedule. She said the situation is still manageable but she is aware of the big adjustment if and when she’ll be having a baby. Juris and Gavin were married on November last year at Mary the Queen Parish in Quezon City. Meanwhile, the singer is reportedly set to do a project in Singapore. Her recent singing stint abroad was last year when
she was invited to perform at the Green Plugged Seoul music festival in South Korea. Juris is no stranger to Korean music fans as she earlier recorded a six-track EP titled, “If You and Me/.” The record was released in the Korean market in 2010 under Star Records.

Stonehenge - the greatest mystery of the prehistoric world
F
or anyone visiting the British Isles it is a must to experience the aura and mystery surrounding the 5,000year old ancient circle of stones at Stonehenge, the most significant and famous prehistoric monument in Europe. Standing on Salisbury Plains in the Wiltshire county of southwestern England, the Stonehenge is also one of the wonders of the world as old as many of the great temples and pyramids of Egypt. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Stonehenge comes from the old English word "stan" meaning stone and "hencg" meaning hinge (hang). The main part of the monument is a circular setting of giant standing stones that are believed to have been put in three main stages, c. 3100 - c. 1550 BC. Around the circle is an outer circle ditch and with a bank inside. Inside the bank is a ring of 56 pits called Aubrey Holes (known after their discoverer) and at the centre is a circle of enormous stones called bluestones (granite that was originally blue) about 13 feet high. Across the tops of the standing stones lie the flat blocks of stones called lintels. Inside this circle are five pairs of
even larger stones arranged in the shape of a horseshoe and within these stones is another horseshoe of smaller stones. Recently, an international archaeological survey team from the University of Birmingham in UK discovered two huge pits near the Stonehenge measuring 5 meters across and at least one meter deep believed to have been used for sun rituals at the summer solstice. Because there is no written record left by the people who built the Stonehenge the reasons for building the Stonehenge are unknown although many theories have been advanced as to its original purposes. Arcaheological evidence indicates that this mysterious structure is believed to have been a temple for sky worship and ritual and could possibly have
served also as a burial ground from its early beginnings; or some type of a giant calendar to mark the beginnings of the season and forecast eclipses of the sun and the moon as declared by the American astronomer Gerald Hawkins; or as an astronomical observatory to observe the risings and settings of the sun and the moon. No one knows exactly how the builders of the Stonehenge carried the heavy stones over such a very long distance. It is believed that they were dragged all the way about 140 miles away from the hills of Prescelly in southwest Wales. How to reach Stonehenge? Take a train from London Waterloo to Salisbury and then Wilts & Dorset Stonehenge Tour Bus to the site.

The Wave Splashes Eternal, part 17 Hats Off! The Hatless Men Are Back with a Hatful of New Songs! (On the Return of Men Without Hats)
A
nother classic New Wave band—a Canadian— Men Without Hats—is back with a new album, Love in the Age of War (2012). The last album prior to this one was released in 2003--nine years ago! In the Philippine New Wave scene, Men Without Hats belong to those Johnny-came-late bands, for the radio stations played their singles already in the late ’80s, when New Wave music was already handing the flag of commerciality to other genres of music. Regardless, the band still managed to join the pantheon of classic New Wave bands because of the infectiousness and eventual popularity of the songs “I Got the Message,” “The Safety Dance,” and “Pop Goes the World.” Men Without Hats was founded in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1977; and released its first EP (four-song minialbum) in 1980. The music of Men Without Hats is defined by the melodic quality of especially the synthesizers and keyboards, the driving style of the bass, the
simplicity of the drum beats, and the low-register of the vocals. Men Without Hats’ complete album discography is as follows: Rhythm of Youth (1982), Folk of the 80’s (Part III) (1984), Pop Goes the World (1987), The
Adventures of Women & Men Without Hate in the 21st Century (1989), Sideways (1991), No Hats beyond This Point (2003), and Love in the Age of War (2012). “Head above Water,” the first single off the new album, is unquestionably New Wave, or Synthpop to make it more specific—and definitely sounds Men Without Hats, despite vocalist Ivan Doroschuk’s being the only remaining original member of the group. Final Note The new album was slated for release on May 22, so by now it should be available at various CD shops all over Canada anytime soon.

Malacañang says Aquino won’t sign waiver on bank accounts
P
resident Benigno S. Aquino III won’t sign any waiver of the confidentiality of his bank accounts in the wake of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s recent conviction and removal from office for his failure to disclose millions of pesos and of dollars in his SALN. Abigail Valte, one of Aquino’s spokespersons, said doing so would be like placing the President in the same category as the ousted Corona.
The President himself he no longer needs to sign any waiver as he already signed the waiver in favor of the Ombudsman in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth. Saying it would be it will only be just drama if he signs again, Aquino indicated that he already fulfilled his campaign pledge when he executed his SALN that also gave the Ombudsman authority to look into government documents pertaining to his wealth.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
Far from Quiet by Joan Duhaylungsod
O
Disgrace
ne of the most disturbing videos I have seen lately is that which involved a male Filipino nurse who battered an elderly in a care home in United KIngdom. Jonathan Aquino, a 30-year old registered nurse from Philippines who moved to UK in 2008, was caught through a hidden camera, slapping an 80year old demented woman in Ash Court Care Home, London. This incident happened last year when Jane Worroll, daughter of the 80-year old victim Maria Worroll started to notice bruises on her mother’s arms and legs and that her mother has been having trouble sleeping at night. She bought a secret camera hidden in an alarm clock and placed it in the victims’s bedroom, to answer her suspicion that her mom is being maltreated in the home. The footage, which was televised through the BBC Panorama program (and yes, it is now in the internet sites too) revealed how the client received an unacceptable healthcare treatment that included Aquino
slapping her six times while she was given a night bath. Anyone who viewed the video would be upset of Aquino’s treatment to the old lady. I myself am seriously bothered about it, so much that I cried and decided to quickly write about this for this FJ issue. I am bothered because I myself am a nurse; in fact, I am a Filipino nurse; and basically because, I am a Filipino. Sure I said many times that I would not like to be a nurse forever, and many times I wished I was working another job, not nursing. But whether you find yourself loving or unloving your profession, you are bound to work and do your job according to the standards of your profession. Caring is the essence of nursing. Unfortunately, it was never reflected by the way Aquino executed his job. It is absolutely unacceptable to the nursing profession in any country or jurisdiction, to find a licensed nurse beating a powerless patient. Whatever happened to the nurses being angels in the sickroom? to
the nurses’s vow for beneficence and non-maleficence? True, nursing knowledge can be attained by education. True, nursing skills can be enhanced through practice. And though saddening, it is true that nursing attitude, which is the most important to execute all the profession’s competencies, cannot be forced to someone who does not really have the passion to care. Albert Einstein said, “Most people say that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is the character”. This quote also goes for all nurses. The incident is more than just an issue of health care standards. This is rather an issue of health ethics, and human rights. I am a Filipino nurse, and just like anyone else in my generation, I was able to enjoy the collective impression that Filipino nurses are more caring and more compassionate than those from other cultures. Such impression could have not been worded, had it not been because of the Filipino nurses from the past generations, who have exemplified what an ideal Filipino nurse should be, and who have lived such ideals in their everyday practice. Such reputation, in one way or another, has given the Filipino nurses of today, an edge over other nationalities, to land on good jobs abroad, despite a tough global competition. Aquino should have realized that. The

world could turn its cold shoulder on us in an instant, just because of one disturbing footage, and it may have to take many decades to get that positive reputation back to the Filipino nurses. The world won’t remember the name Jonathan Aquino, it will just remember what he did and where he came from- Philippines, that is. What could be more outraging for a Filipino to see is to see another Filipino hitting a powerless elderly, who could be his or someone else’s mom or grandmother. It is ironic that while Filipinos claim that we have huge respect for family and old people, there’s this video. Jonathan Aquino is sentenced to 18 months in prison for elderly abuse. The decision was made last April after Aquino admitted guilty of the common
assault and ill treatment to Mrs. Worroll, as shown in the footage from a hidden camera. There are still worse cases in the health care delivery in UK, and in those cases, the British nationalities are guilty of the abuse. But suffice it to say that any form of abuse is unacceptable. I may just have reacted this way because I am a Filipino and nurse, and what he did was a disgrace to both his nation and his profession. But more than that, I am reacting this way because what Aquino did was a sheer disgrace to the law of God and to the law of people. Anyone who believes in human life and dignity, knows what these all that I am saying.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
Horoscope Your energy and focus are all over the place. You have some really annoying dramas concerning your relatives or local community, but then later you are thrilled to spend quality time with them. You are torn between your home life and your career, but you end up more interested in vacations and playtime activities.
You may be a bit more tired now, which is a cue to conserve your resources, and get more sleep! Dreams will be vivid and rich with symbolic direction. You might accomplish more with your head on the pillow than burning the midnight oil.
Make your life more efficient and enhance your sense of selfworth. Playing it safe by making minor modifications is not enough to resolve a critical issue. Sometimes it’s better to risk going too far than doing nothing at all.
Achievements are great, but to you, they’re meaningless unless you have good people in your life to share the journey. For the last year, you’ve had a few lonely or sobering moments in your rise to the top.Your already active life is only getting busier, and it will be hard to sit still or focus on just one thing. Taking breaks to meditate, journal or decompress will be ever more important now, even if it’s the last thing you want to do.
Get ready to reboot, Gemini. The last year has been one long retreat, and if you’ve used it well, you should feel a massive heart and soul expansion. Look back to the way you were a year ago at this time. Chances are, you’ve become softer, more open, and more willing to go with the flow.
June marks a powerful turning point in your career path. By the end of the year, you could be in an entirely different role, position, or even industry. It may also mean outgrowing something you’ve been doing for a while. Shed the old skin, because you’re being pulled in an inspiring direction.
This time you could be facing some challenges balancing the needs of a partnership and the demands of family. You can be pulled in many different directions with less time to pursue your own personal goals. Tame restlessness and tend to your responsibilities as best as you can.
Work tends to be very available to you, and possibly too available at times, so that you may have to choose between alternatives or you could take on too much. Overall, however, work is likely to be very rewarding. Health is likely to improve in the year ahead.
Your sense of security or wealth can increase through a relationship with a partner. Sources of income might also come through counseling work or the handling of others’ finances and resources. This time, however, your schedule may be hectic, particularly on a social level, and there can be some challenges organizing your finances. Avoid jumping into new endeavors that require big outlays of cash.
You are beginning a year-long trend that brings wonderful opportunities to boost your social life, explore your creativity, and find new avenues for entertainment and self-expression. For some of you, a friend could turn into a romantic partner, or could introduce you to one during this cycle.
Avoid risky financial moves. Unsettled money matters may need your attention now.Good publicity may come your way. Resolutions are likely to be found for long-standing problems in relationships. You are taking charge of your career in June, as your ambition is stimulated and others are taking note of your competence.
There may be some tense undercurrents or conflicts over money that disrupts a friendship in June. Relationships are lively and moving forward, romance and recreation figure strongly.

Editor’s Note: This is a reactionary commentary concerning the almostcancelled two-show concert in the Philippines last May of the American Pop artist Lady Gaga. Despite the street protests staged by some local religiously fanatic church groups in the Philippines days prior to the concert, the show went on successfully. Both evenings were sold out. There was no any untoward incident that occurred inside the venue. The concertgoers didn’t turn into devil worshippers. The Lady Gaga concert didn’t cause anyone to commit murder or something. Everyone went back to their usual lives and routines after the show was over. The whole anti-Gaga protest thing was not much different from all those hate campaigns staged by various usually religion-fuelled protest groups since the days of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, and even the Philippines’ very own Eraserheads. At the end of the show, it’s just music, you know.
Why There’s No Need to Go Gaga over Lady Gaga’s Concert in Manila
I
don’t listen to pop music as much as I used to when I was a kid, but hearing about Lady Gaga and her music just can’t be helped nowadays. She’s pretty much become a household name. Based on what I’ve heard, Lady Gaga is not only a singer but also a full-fledged performer, and a good one at that. I won’t pretend to fully know why so many people seem to be attracted to her and her music, but I can understand that it mostly boils down to personal taste and preference. After all, I too was once a teenager who liked to idolize international pop sensations. In any case, though, I don’t care for Lady Gaga and her music. I don’t care about her outrageous costumes, her controversial lyrics, and her overall presentation of herself as some sort of wild circus act. But when I got wind of the fact that several local church groups were trying to stop her from performing live here in the Philippines, I got the sudden urge to say something to point out the ridiculousness of it all. The whole protest against Lady Gaga’s concert in the Philippines is just silly. The local church groups behind it are therefore silly by proxy. Again, I don’t care much for this pop star; but as the saying goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
The Wrong Approach Biblemode Youth is one of the local church groups behind the protests against Lady Gaga’s concert. I tried to look up why they wanted to keep Lady Gaga from performing here in the Philippines, and I’ve found that their argument simply boils down to this: “Stop liking what I don’t like!” To me, this is an immature and bull-headed approach to things, especially when it concerns the lives of other people—people whose lives you shouldn’t bother to get involved in. It’s easier if you just let the people vote with their money. Those who want to watch the concert get to watch the concert. After all, it isn’t free. And it’s not that easy to control the actions of other people anyway. Since the only person that you truly have control over is yourself, wouldn’t it be better if you simply focused on that? If you don’t like the music, change the station. If you hate the show on TV, change the channel. And if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! Practicing control over yourself and your own choices seems like an easier and stress-free alternative to me.
that many of today’s local church groups like Biblemode Youth don’t seem to get: Many of Lady Gaga’s fans (or whoever else wants to watch her concert) are perfectly capable of making choices for themselves with the use of their brains. Yes, those brains still work despite the onslaught of mindless reality shows and soap operas on local TV. But what about the children, you ask? Well, that’s none of my business. But if you really want to know, I suggest you take it up to their parents. After all, it’s their children. They’re not mine. And they’re not anyone else’s children either. So it’s really the parents who should have the final say on whether a kid gets to watch Lady Gaga’s concert or not. Same goes for teenagers, speaking of which they’ve got friends and some of them are in holy spaces. They can perhaps talk amongst themselves to decide whether or not the concert is worth going to. Having to go through all the trouble of banning Lady Gaga entirely is unnecessary. Lady Gaga Isn’t the Devil, But Far from It Lady Gaga is tagged by the likes of former Manila congressman and current Pastor Benny Abante Jr. of the Metropolitan Baptist Church as a bad influence on today’s youth. In a report on ABS-CBN’s news website that was published prior to the scheduled concert, he said: “’Yung isang kanta, ’yung ‘Born This Way,’ it’s also telling the young
people na ‘you can do anything, you want anyway, you are born this way.’ It is not only immoral; it is also a blasphemy. The Lord Jesus Christ is being maligned here and mocked.” Talk about missing the point.
June 5 - 20, 2012
The way I see it, Lady Gaga is actually doing the lord’s work. She gives money to charity, makes a lot of people happy with her music, offers inspiration for everyone to embrace who they are and what they possess, and she even makes some For those who do not know the of us laugh with the way she dresses words to the Lady Gaga song when she goes to the Grammy’s. mentioned above, the chorus goes That’s more than can be said for like this: most of the people who are trying to oppose her performance here in the I’m beautiful in my way country. ‘Cause God makes no mistakes I’m on the right track, baby A Decent Proposal I was born this way I know the local groups who Don’t hide yourself in regret are trying to stop Lady Gaga from Just love yourself and you’re set performing live are only trying to I’m on the right track, baby help. After all, where would we I was born this way be without proper guidance away from the teachings of the spooky The rest of the song just goes devil? But the fact remains, all those around the same theme: That it’s who want to watch Lady Gaga’s perfectly okay to accept yourself concert are going to do so on their with whatever you are born with, own accord, in their own time, and and you can make the most out of with their own money. It’s up to your life no matter what. I have no themselves to make the choice, not idea what kind of thinking would up to anyone else. And there’s only lead anyone to misconstrue this one real way to help: Just get out of song as blasphemous, but if I had to the way. make a guess, I’d say it’s delusional religious thinking (no offense to Note: all religious people who might be David Gonzales is a freelance reading this). writer and technology journalist So is Mr. Pastor-Congressman based in Metro, Manila, Philippines, saying that God can be wrong? The Legendary Gracies Take a Stand and Speak Up About Bullying
T
he year was 1993. Live on pay per view, a new concept in combat sports - The Ultimate Fighting Championship. Meant to prove once and for all, which martial art was the best. Karate, boxing, sumo wrestling or jiu jitsu. When the tournament was done and the smoke cleared there stood one winner, from a family who’ve mastered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Royce Gracie. Years later, the sport of MMA and the UFC have evolved into a multibillion dollar industry with network TV deals, superstar fighters, and even
action figures. But through it all, the Gracie name has stayed synonymous with being the foremost experts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Recently, Royce and his brother Royler Gracie came to Winnipeg to hold Jiu Jitsu seminars at the Gracie Humaita Gym, run by Rodrigo Munduruca. I had a chance to sit down with these two legendary fighters to speak about a subject very close to my heart. Bullying. I found it amazing that here sits a couple of men, who’s skills make them some of the most dangerous
martial artists in the world, would calmly speak about bullies, their victims and how to put an end to it. “It’s about confidence” said Royler, who spoke of growing up around people that instilled confidence in them from a young age. “We were always being told you look good, you look strong, even though I didn’t, I’m just a skinny kid!” he says as he laughed. The Gracies talked about how taking part in martial arts builds that confidence needed. “We’re talking about Jiu Jitsu, because that’s what we know. But if you take part in any martial art, you get that confidence.” Royce and Royler shared a story about how a bully from their childhood held a stick to them, a weapon, demanding money. But they had the confidence not to back down, and sent that bully running. Royce’s take on it is to not only look after the victim, but to also the bully. “Why is he bullying?” he asks. “it’s because he’s not confident himself. He pushes around those smaller than him because he thinks it makes him look cool? Look tough?” Royce Gracie says to put the bully

Ivy Rose is a product of a family’s love of music. The band’s manager Tito de Leon is the father of Isabelle, Sarah and Kristine, while his wife Lynn is the group’s marketing agent.
Drummer Isabelle is on her senior year at the University of Maryland. where she is pursuing Pre-Medicine and Jazz Drums Performance. Lead guitarist Sarah is an incoming freshman at the University of Maryland where she wants to pursue a double major in electrical engineering and jazz

and the victim in the same martial arts class. They’ll learn not just the skill of combat, but also to honor and respect each other. Maybe even become friends as they’ll share that brotherhood like bond from training together. Being bullied is such a terrible experience. It happens in schools, online and even amongst
adults. To have highly skilled martial artists and role models like Royce and Royler Gracie speaking up against bullying goes a long way in ending it. If you’re being bullied or you know someone who is, please Take a Stand and Speak Up about Bullying.

Sunday Victoria weekend's escapade
T
o visit the three Manitoba major tourist attractions on the Sunday of Victoria weekend, is an act of an unchallenged feat. It was a day of fun, of snakes, of waves, and of ice cream! Last Sunday Victoria weekend, the garter snake enthusiasts were heading to Narcisse Snake Dens, a world renown snake attraction in Manitoba. The sun was shining with a gentle wisp of cold spring air, the three-car convoy lazily hit Highway 7. The day's trip would be very hectic: a brief visit to Old Hammock Marsh, Manitoba's ecological project closer to Highway 7; a time to watch, to catch and to hold garter snakes at Narcisse Snake Dens; and in the afternoon, a side trip to Gimli; and way back home, a short stop at Lockport and its historic St. Andrew's Church along the River Avenue. But a certain event took place and the group skipped the Old Hammock Marsh. The three-car convoy led by Rod E. Cantiveros, FJ publisher and vp marketing, followed by Vangie de Leon, and at the end, a car driven by Carol T. Castro, drove directly to the snake country. First stop at Inwood famous for its landmark monument for garter snake. Photo session took place with the giant replica of garter snake. With two new comers, Ladie Vila and Geline Castro, plus the eager and excited youngsters, KC Reyes and her brother Nathan (so excited to see and hold the garter snake) Dominic Rodriguez and Justin de Leon plus his mom, Vangie and family friend,Veron
Opina, the touring group enjoyed being with the giant snake replica. Countless photo poses, in group and in solo took place. Then, headed to Highway 17 and after more than a hour of turning and detouring as instructed by GPS, the group arrived at the Narcisse Snake Dens with excitements. Excitements but with a little bit of fear overpowered the members of the group after the heavy lunch. The youngsters got the time to catch garter snake and tried to let other people experience the snake encounter. Others got scared but later on, some had touched the friendly and venom less garter snake. Many people came to the Narcisse Snake Dens and the youngsters started gathering snakes. The youngsters of the group, led by KC Reyes, started gathering more snakes. Then, an impromptu snake hunting game took over. The contestants were Nathan and the two-boy team, Dominic and Justin got into action to find and get more snakes. The more snakes they catch, the more chances to win some cash prizes. The snake hunting contest became serious and the three boys started looking for garter snakes together with the two judges: KC Reyes and Geline Castro. The contest was a draw between Nathan and the team of Dominic Rodriquez and Justin de Leon. The winners received cash prizes. In the afternoon, the group arrived in Gimli. Gimli is teeming with people; some were sunbathing; some were just playing with stones and the waves; some were walking lazily on the beach. The group put
up a mat under the tree, overlooking Lake Winnipeg. Chow time again and the younger members of the group started playing with the water and some started collecting special stones. On way to Winnipeg, the group passed by at Lockport for a cold ice cream and coffee. The group had a good time watching people fishing along the banks of the river. A Korean guy was lucky and he let the group carry the fish for photo opp. And he gave the fish to the group as a gift. The group visited the oldest church along the River Road at Lockport and everybody enjoyed the beautiful view of the Red River while heading to Winnipeg. Visiting the three Manitoba tourist spots, the local tourists, all Filipino-Canadians, were tired by happy for the joy of spending time with nature. It is a memorable experience! Indeed, it is priceless! And everyone is looking forward to the next escapade: here it is: July 1st, Canada Day and the destinations will be at the Steinbach Heritage Festival, Giroux’s International Magic Museum, and the Manitoba’s Scarecrow Country. Be a local tourist. Join our group. (204)489-8894.

Pacquiao will be too much for Bradley
M
anny Pacquiao is expected to control Tim Bradley just like what he did to Miguel Cotto. This was the pre-fight assessment of Buboy Fernandez referring from Pacquiao’s dominating performance against the Puerto Rican champion in Nov. 2009. Fernandez, a long-time member of Team Pacquiao since the late-1990s said Bradley hasn’t fought a fighter of Pacquiao’s caliber and it will be a big surprise if he will last 12rounds. Cotto almost went the distance with Pacquiao before the referee stepped the fight with less than a minute to go in the 12th and final round. Still an elite fighter like Manny is not taking the unbeaten American fighter lightly as he prepares for their welterweight bout June 9 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas
The Bradley fight isn’t even over yet but Pacquiao knows everybody will ask him about the potential of a Mayweather fight in November. He said he’s still willing to fight Mayweather but he has to fight first the guys who are hungry to fight him like. Bradley. For his part, Bradley conceded that Pacquiao is the best fighter in the history of boxing. However he said Pacquiao has reigned for a long time, and the boxing world needs a new face like him. Meanwhile, Jeremy Renner, the star of Bourne Legacy who spent some of weeks in Manila to shoot scenes a few months ago, dropped by to say hello to the pound-for-pound king. Renner even posed for pictures with Pacquiao, saying he will be at ringside next week to root for him.
