How Immigration Investigates Work History
I
n immigration applications for permanent residency, applicants are required to give a time line of their work history and must also provide supporting documents that show where they worked, when they worked, and the type of work they did. Just because a person fills out a form and puts in supporting letters does not mean that everything submitted will be believed. When reviewing an immigration file, immigration officers sometimes do investigations beyond what is in the application package. In some cases, these investigations are done without the applicant’s knowledge.
What sort of investigations do immigration officers do? In September, the Federal Court of Canada handed down a decision in the case of Mr. Kahin. In this case, Mr. Kahin challenged a refusal of his permanent residency visa because the immigration officer did not give him a chance to respond to concerns the immigration officer had from her independent investigation. In this case, the immigration officer asked Mr. Kahin for additional details regarding his work history. In response, Mr. Kahin indicated that one of his employers refused his request for
a reference letter and that he was unable to find two of his other employers. The immigration officer then took it upon herself to investigate Mr. Kahin’s employment history. She contacted the office manager of one of his employers and then did an internet search for the other employer. She then called the other employer which was not located in the area where Mr. Kahin said he worked. The immigration officer found that the first employer had no employment record of Mr. Kahin’s employment. In addition, this employer required all of their employees to have a certain license. The immigration officer then called the government agency responsible for licensing and found that Mr. Kahin was not licensed to work in that occupation for the time he said he worked at the company. After speaking to the second employer, that employer confirmed to the immigration officer that it never operated in the area Mr. Kahin said he was employed.

In this case, the immigration officer did not disclose either piece of information to Mr. Kahin or his representative before she refused his application.
history and providing reference and other letters to ensure that all of the information is accurate. Hiding a period of unemployment, exaggerating ones duties at work, and exaggerating the time a person worked for an organization can be detrimental to an immigration case. It is always advisable to fully disclose an employment history accurately so that in any investigation, the information on the application is verified as true.
What happened in this case? In this case, the judge stated that the immigration officer had to advise Mr. Kahin of her findings and give him a right to respond. Because he did not get this opportunity, the judge overturned the decision of the officer and sent it back for another officer to This Article is prepared for general determine. information purposes only and is intended to provide comments for What should applicants do when readers and friends of the Filipino answering questions about their Journal. Plucking Some Leafs from the Literary Trees of Home (On Books I Acquired in the Philippines during My Recent Vacation There)
E
very time I’m on a trip or vacation in a distant place, I ensure that I visit bookshops and purchase a number of books that catch my interest as part of the souvenirs or mementos from that place. This makes the books more special and the place more memorable, for every time I would read any of the books, it would remind me of the place where I bought it; in the same manner that when I happen to visit the place again, this might remind me of the books I bought from there. On Thursday in our first week in the Philippines, my sisters Kimberly and Niña and the latter’s husband Wilson treated us to a trek at the posh commercial complex Bonifacio High Streets in Global City, Taguig. We had an afternoon snack at Conti’s Pastry Shop & Restaurant. At the Power Books there, I purchased the Virgilio S. Almario’s Filipino translations of Jose Rizal’s two novels Noli Me Tangere and El FIlibusterismo. The next day, we visited Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila, where I bought four Jose Rizal books—Poems, Prose, Letters with Family Members, and A Biography of Jose Rizal: The First Filipino by Leon Ma. Guerrero. Fortunately, Charina’s friend Zarah Escueta (in the picture with me) was the curator of the Rizal Shrine Museum of
the historical fort which houses Rizal’s memorabilia, so we had a really great accommodation and introspective tour of the place. Before we left, Zarah gave me two books—Surat Sug (Letters of the Sultanate of Sulu, volumes I and II) by Samuel K. Tan. (Sulu is an autonomous island province
of the Philippines located in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The Sultanate of Sulu was an Islamic state that ruled over many of the islands of the Sulu Sea, in the southern Philippines and several places in northern Borneo. The sultanate was founded in 1457.) The Last Leaf I would have bought some more books especially by contemporary Philippine authors but because of our hectic schedule, I failed to do so. Better luck next vacation. Or, I might just ask friends or relatives to buy those for me. Other authors whose published books I would like to add to my book collection include Jose Garcia Villa, Nick Joaquin, Francisco Sionil Jose, Ambeth Ocampo, Jessica Zafra, and Bob Ong.
Cebuanos watch Boom Boom pummels ‘other’ Garcia
A
boxing scandal broke out over the weekend in Tagbilaran City, Bohol when Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista beat up a visiting foe who turned out to be not the boxer that Bautista’s handlers wanted him to face and defeat. Promoter Michael Aldeguer of Cebu, who heads ALA Promotions, said the boxer who arrived here turned out to be Genaro “Panterita” Garcia (10-11 win-loss with six knockouts), and not the veteran and heavy-handed Genaro “Poblanito” Garcia (37-8 with 21 knockouts). Aldeguer said his group is planning to take legal action against Mexican agent Hugo Correa for act of deceit in sending the wrong Garcia.
Advertise with us!
Garcia arrived in Cebu late Wednesday night and suspicions about his true identity surfaced during a press conference as he answered wrongly when asked by the press about the toughest fighter he has fought. New Zealand referee Bruce McTavish, a long-time Philippine resident also swore that the Garcia who came here was not the Garcia ALA Promotions wanted because McTavish had refereed one of the real Genaro Garcia’s world title fights in Jan. 2009 in Japan. For his part, Aldeguer said he felt suspicious the moment Garcia arrived in Cebu because he was all alone and without a trainer with him. He said Garcia took a circuitous route from Mexico
City to Cebu via Amsterdam, South Africa, and Incheon, Korea because he didn’t have a US visa that will allow him to transit in Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Biazon to handle Hollywood actor’s travel controversy
D
eputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte said the Palace would leave to Bureau of Customs (BoC) Chief Ruffy Biazon to handle the controversy arising from the claim of Hollywood actor Taylor Kitsch who mistakenly blamed the country for his delayed entry into Indonesia. Valte said Kitsch allegedly had a heated argument with Philippine airport officials but authorities have no records that he visited the country supposedly to shoot a film by Oliver Stone. Valte added that Kitsch should correct the reference to the country. as it was evident that Taylor Kitsch was not here and his unfortunate experience did not happen in the Philippines. In an interview with American TV host Dave Letterman last week, Kitsch claimed that a Philippine Customs officer nearly
denied him entry due to lack of blank pages on his passport. The officer also reportedly asked him for an iPhone in exchange for entry to the Philippines or just return to Japan where he came from. After a long argument, the actor was allowed to enter the country

Lovelle’s family home (where we were staying), and we enjoyed early dinner and a good conversation. I am not surprised anymore every time I realize that my nephews and nieces— all of whom I always remember as little children—are now grownups, either teenagers or past their twenties. It reminds me that I am now 41. I don’t mind. I’ve never been secretive or elusive about my age anyway. Age symbolizes many essential things— maturity, sense of priority, ageing, failures, and accomplishments. I’ve long understood why many people hide their age. In a nutshell, only the discontented or the insecure hides her age. Not me—I’ve always been proud of my having matured, my changing priorities, my accomplishments, and even my failures in life—the reason acknowledging one’s age is not a big deal to me. Some people hide their age because they look much older than how they think they should look for their age—vanity. Some people hide their age because they feel that their accomplishments are not yet enough despite their age—insecurity, discontent. Some people hide their age because they feel that they still have lots of unfinished businesses and their age make them feel that their time is running out. Ultimately, some people hide their age because they are simply dumb and they just follow what others are doing or they believe easily what they read because they have poor analytical ability or weak decision making. Time’s up; we’re boarding now...on our way to Vancouver, British Columbia.
(During our one-month vacation in the Philippines, I have been blogging about our stay there—our adventures, my observations, as well as my insights on random thoughts and various conditions that I have seen, witnessed, and re-experienced. I am tackling these in a series of topics for this column of mine, with the purpose of presenting my in-depth analysis of such issues. My purpose, as always, is to challenge people to think analytically and logically and to discourage them to look at things in a narrow-minded perspective, for a narrow mind is usually the culprit behind an ignorant bigot.)
What Time Is It? How Old Am I? What’s There to Hide? (On Being Confident and Secure about One’s Age) On our return to Canada, on February 11, 2012, we took the route Metro Manila, Philippines–Narita, Japan–Vancouver, British Columbia–and then finally Winnipeg, Manitoba. Here’s a blog I posted while we were at the airport in Narita, waiting for our connecting flight.
I
t’s 5:46 p.m. here at the airport in Narita, Japan (2:46 a.m. Winnipeg time; 4:46 p.m., Philippine time). Inna, Evawwen, Christine, and I are awaiting our flight to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. So far, the travel is a bit exhausting, not because of the travel itself but because Evawwen is so inquisitive and frolicsome that I have to answer his every “What’s that, Dad?” and run after him when he feels like checking out the people and things around him. Yesterday was very hectic. Inna and I with our kids Marina, Jannica, and Gabby had to go to Department
of Tourism on Kalaw Avenue in Manila to file for the travel tax exemption (We had to pay 200 pesos per person for the processing fee). Afterwards we went to the nearby familiar playground near Taft Ave., which I as well as Marina and Jannica fondly remembered as children for that giant boot/shoe, which to this day still smelled of pee inside. We passed by Rizal Monument before we finally went back to Pasay. Getting Together with Relatives Reminds Me of My Age Del Prado-Aranzamendez relatives paid us a visit at my sister

nother year of Festival du Voyageur is over and this year, as in years past, the Filipno Journal has helped promote and educate Winnipeg’s Filipino community on Manitoba’s French-Canadian history. It’s an opportunity to experience “Joie de vivre!” translated in English, as the “joy of life” and parallels many ideals in Filipino celebrations. In fact, many of the new immigrants that joined us throughout the week at Festival du Voyaguer have been long residents of Manitoba and decided that this year would be the year to join in the festivities. The 43rd edition of Festival du Voyageur was a very special one for myself personally. Largely in part as being behind the beard and mustache of many of the Festival du Voyageur billboards seen throughout Winnipeg leading up to Winnipeg’s 10-day festival. The festival attracted
a record breaking number of visitors, thanks in large part to mild weather and diverse programming. My billboard might have added to it too or I’d like to think so anyways. “The 43rd edition of Festival du Voyageur was a huge success! Voyageur Park was full of visitors and our official sites had excellent participation as well. In addition to great programming focused on discovery, our visitors were entertained by our special events where participation was on the rise.” said Ginette Lavack Walters, Executive Director of Festival du Voyageur. “On behalf of the entire team of Festival du Voyageur and our Board of Directors, we would like to thank visitors from Winnipeg, Manitoba and elsewhere who proved once again that winter and French heritage are worth celebrating.” On Saturday, February 25th, the Filipino Journal hosted a

My Ride Ron Cantiveros
T
2012 Lexus RX 350
here’s a lot to love about the new 2012 Lexus RX 350. Re-designed back in 2010, there are very few changes to this year’s model. The Lexus RX 350 offers everything you would expect from a luxury crossover SUV - top notch performance, confort, design and reliability. With as many appealing features and options, the RX 350 is Lexus’ best-selling model. The 2012 Lexus RX 350 boasts a 3.5 litre V6 engine with a six-speed super Electronically Contolled Transmisison (Super ECT) and puts out 295 horsepower at 4,800rpm. It’s a quiet ride especially when the engine has an insulated engine cover that conceals the V6 engine. Fuel consumption is 6.7L/100km in the city, 7.2L/100kms on the highway. There are also a lot of hightech features too! As a techie, I spent a good amount of time playing with the navigation, entertainment and climate control systems using Lexus’ Remote Touch interface. The Remote Touch interface uses a haptic

feedback and it’s likely the most expensive mouse I’ve ever used and is positioned perfectly on the centre console. With three available power plugs, there’s more than enough power to keep your iPod, smartphone and tablets all powered up. The RX 350 has a sporty ride with an empahasis on roominess
and comfort, similar to that of a luxury sedan. Sitting in the driver’s seat is pure luxury and with all the bells and whistle controls you could ever ask for. This vehicle is pretty much built for passenger comfort. The heated leather seats are always a bonus during our mild Winnipeg winters, at least this year, they’re mild. The 2012 Lexus RX 350 starts at $44,950. Only available in one trim level, Lexus offers several optional sports, touring, premium and ultra premium packages. Standard features include 18inch alloy wheels, foglights, heated outside mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, eight-way power front seats, second-row seats that slide and recline, wood interior
trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a nine-speaker sound system with a six-CD changer, an auxiliary audio interface and satellite radio. The RX 350 with the Ultra Premium packages includes a 15speaker audio system, dual screen rear seat DVD entertainment system and 19” aluminum alloy wheels plus a long list of luxury and convenience add ons. This RX 350 option would set you back $62,850. Other vehicles in this small consumer category of luxury sport crossover SUVs include the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Infinity FX35, Buick Enclave, Licoln MKT and the Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

Winnipeg Jets Report By Ron Cantiveros Photos by Rob Buenaventura
T
Home Advantage Again
he Winnipeg Jets earned 9 points out of a possible 12 points to close out the final six home games in February at MTS Centre. Those points came against wins over the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, and the Tampa Bay Lightning. One point from an overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers and another from the shootout loss against the St. Luis Blues. The final game against the Edmonton Oilers was a 5-3 loss. The Oilers visit marked the return of former Winnipeg Jet 1.0 goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin to Winnipeg. Unfortunately, due to a groin injury, Khabibulin was an injury scratch for the game.

March Madness Jets roared into the final full month of the NHL regular season by hammering the visiting Florida Panthers 7-0. With three games in hand at the time, the Winnipeg Jets enjoyed top spot in the South East Division and third overall in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers have since reclaimed the third spot in the Eastern Conference and top of the Southeast Division. In a rare occurrence, 15,004 fans witnessed the first Flying W with a 5-on-1 in the third period as the Jets forward, Blake Wheeler scored on the amazing rush!
Wheeling & Dealing On the final day of the trade deadline, the Jets acquired Grant Clitsome from the Columbus Blue Jackets off waivers to bring some depth into their already deep blue line of defensemen. As the deadline approached on what was seen as a quiet day on the trading block, Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheldayoff made is first NHL trade by sending veteran defenseman, Johnny Oduya to the Chicago Blackhawks. In return for Oduya, the Winnipeg Jets have Chicago’s second and third round picks in 2013. Andrew Ladd Bobble Head For those fortunate enough to hold a ticket for the Sunday, March 18th game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the first 10,000 fans at MTS Centre will receive a voucher good for one Andrew Ladd bobblehead. The bobblehead, which comes in a full-colour collector’s box, features the Jets team captain in his home blue uniform, equipped with stick and full equipment.

Jed Madela: entertainer par excellence!
J
ed Madela is hot! With minus 40 celsius (windchill factor included) hovering in the prairies in the early days of February, Jed Madela honestly claims that Winnipeg ‘s weather is too cold but what he has felt is the warmest response from the hearts of his fans. His hotness in the entertainment world plus the warmth reception from his fan would melt the snow! “Sa totoo po, maraming suson na ang aking mga damit, including my pantalon, malamig pa rin. But I am feeling differently because of your warmth which is coming from your heart; and your happy feeling to meet me and to hear my songs. I love you.” “I love you too”, a woman’s voice interjected as the fans gave Jed Madela a thunderous welcome. Jed Madela responded with so much enthusiasm as he rendered many popular songs. Jed Madela’s “Beyond Expectations Canada Tour 2012 is a supercharged program of current music and the retro especially the continuous recognitions of wonderful people who inspired his singing career. He belted many songs as a tribute to the past and the present musical icons. His inspired rendition of Freddie Aguillar’s Anak; to the song and antics of the pound by pound boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and to the memory lane of the 50’s and the 60’s – from the Platters, Neil Sedaka to Elvis Presley, and most especially his tribute to his
dad who fully inspired him to become a singer. “I owed my love of music from my Dad. Our family is surrounded with music and this led me to what I am today. Jed Madela broke the entertainment firmament when he became the singing champion at WCOPA; and this led to more awards like the Male Recording Artist of the Year; Classic Album Revival Award of the Year; and Classic Christmas Aliw’s “Best Major Concert Awardee. Performing at a theatre set-up at the Marlborough Skyview, Jed Madela has given the best of his performance and conveying his “real me”:: his professionalism with a great sense of humnour; his undeniably warm rapport to her fans; and his resiliency on the demand of his fans who would like to hear more of his songs; and his sincerity and openness to his fans. And as he performs without a sign of fatigue, the fans requested more songs and the fans loved him so much. “Love na love kita, Jed…any husay-husay mo…talagang ibangiba ka sa ibang singer na Pinoy… talagang mahusay, hindi TH (trying hard) very natural, very professional at saka, qwapo…at saka hind naman pala suplado”, one of his fans who was waiting for his signature on the Jed Madela’s CD. “Totoo pala mga nadidinig ko about the Filipinos in Winnipeg , napakainit ang pagtanggap ninyo
kahit puno ng snow ang mga bangketa, iba kayo…talagang kakaiba kayo dito”, Jed Madela said while he was surrounded by fans for photo op and to see while he signed the CD’s and other Jed Madela’s photos brought by the fans. Jed Madela also clarified to his fans what was the real story for this trip to Winnipeg last year. “Eh, ganoon pa naman ang nangyari, at least nalaman ko, kasi isa ako doon sa nagbayad just to see and hear Jed.” said by one of the excited fans.

“Will you come again if I will return for another concert?”, and the answer form his fans is thunderous. A resounding yes! “Marami pong salamat sa inyong lahat, and from the bottom of my heart, I love you all,” Jed said with all his heart. And the fans went wild. “Ang husay-husay niya”, one of the hundreds of fans who was among the fans which surround Jed for his 3rd encore. The front act ignited the show by the powerful performances of the following artist: Vancouver based host and singer, Janice Lozano and
the singing lawyer, Jojo Quimpo and our local supercharged talented hopefuls: Marrion Torres, Reynalyne Mae Gacilan, Vina Dimayuga, Ivanne Dandan and Hannah Sagral! Why Regina?
S
ome of my friends have wondered why I decided to settle down in Regina in this cold country when I was born and raised in Manila in the warm and paradisiacal Philippines. I could blame Marcos but let me tell you what triggered it. In the summer of 1968, I had just completed two semesters of teaching math at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S. C. when I got a phone call from the Dean of Science. He wanted to
know why I gave a W instead of an F to a student of mine in my calculus class. I explained to him that the student had come to my office midway in the semester and had told me that he was withdrawing from the class. He was one of two black students in my class of about thirty and he was involved in the civil rights movement. If you have read Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, you would get an idea of what it was like for

blacks to live in the Deep South in the 60s. I was sympathetic to this student and I told him I’d give him a W when he dropped the subject. Apparently, he had not filled up the proper form for withdrawal with the usual fee. Now the Dean wants me to change the W to an F. “What difference does it make? He still did not pass.” I told the Dean. “Quite a lot. With another F, we should be able to discontinue his studies here.” “Oh. But I promised him a W when he came to see me to drop the class.” “No, he has not officially dropped the class.” “Sorry. I cannot back down from my word.” “I’m telling you that giving him the F is the proper thing to do.” I politely told the dean that he may change the grade if he thought that was the right thing to do but I wouldn’t and I hang up. Moments later, I realized that I might have just curtailed my career with this state university in the South. That evening, my wife and I started to talk about returning home to the Philippines or moving on to another university. It was summer, just a short time before school started in the fall and the classified ads in the American Math Society Notices carried very few items. One item that caught my eyes was the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan. So I thought I’d give it a shot and I sent my resume.
A couple of weeks later, I got a long distance call from Dr. Cecil Kaller who was head of the Mathematics Department in Regina. He acknowledged the receipt of my application for an assistant professorship and told me that the Appointments Committee was quite impressed with my teaching and research. He just wanted to hear me speak. I thought that was strange and he explained that their department had three Asian mathematicians, a Chinese, a Japanese and an Indian and the students had a hard time understanding their English. As I am an Asian, he wanted to talk with me. I told him, “I am a Filipino and we learned English from grade one onwards.” He was quite happy with our small chat and he offered me the job indicating how much my salary would be. He asked if I could be in Regina first week of September. I said, “Sure. I shall apply for visa for myself, my wife and two kids as soon as I receive the letter of appointment.” As it was mid August then, Dr. Kaller told me to just drive up to the border at North Portal, North Dakota and ask the Canadian customs people to call him collect at the phone number he gave me. I told him I would try my best to arrive there in about two weeks allowing for closing personal business, packing our stuffs and travel time. I had never been to Saskatchewan or even the Dakotas and I had wondered what insane

venture I was getting into, my whole family in tow and with no travel papers. (I was thirty some and I was brainlessly fearless. Siga-siga!) My wife and I had given serious thought of returning to the University of the Philippines but the idea of working under a government of the corrupt and self-aggrandizing dictator Marcos turned us off. I talked to my colleagues in the Math department and some were quite pleased with the offer. Dr. Bob Philips said the Medicare Program was good for the family. He mentioned some other social benefits. But Dr. Bill Caldwell was wondering what we would do on August 17. “August 17? Is that a holiday of sorts?” I asked. “That’s the day when the sun comes out.” Bill said drawing laughter from everybody. (After we settled down in Regina, I learned that we get more days of sunshine in Saskatchewan than most provinces in Canada.) Anyway, in the last week of August, 1968, I was driving north through southern Saskatchewan with my wife Dony and two small kids in our new Chevrolet Malibu with no visas and nary a search or X-rays at the Customs. (Now fast forward to 2012. Dony and I just flew back from two weeks in California and we had to take off our shoes and everything with metal (belts, wallets, coins) before we could go through the X-ray scanners at the airports.) And we have been in Regina since.
MVP widens his interests in broadcasting
M
agnate Manny Pangilinan is seemingly intent in widening his interests in broadcasting as he confirmed that he is interested in buying GMA Network. MVP, as he is known in the business circle, emphasized, though, that the talks with GMA management are but preliminary, which he said started way back in 2002. For his part, Atty. Felipe Gozon of GMA-7 recently released a statement saying his company is flattered by the expression of continued interest on the part of MVP. He stressed however that there has been no
price offered that could form the basis of discussion between the parties. Pangilinan has major interests in other big businesses
like TV5, PLDT, Smart, Talk ‘N Text, Meralco, Maynilad, Philex Mining, Landco Pacific, and the Manila Metro Rail Transit System.

Are Immigrants Merely a Means to Manitoba’s Economic Goals?
M
anitoba’s fastest demographic growth in the country (Source: January 2011 Census, Statistics Canada) can be attributed partly to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program’s success in attracting immigrants to the province. It’s a clear proof that the province’s goal of economic growth through increased population and labor force is wellserved by the nominee program. Recent studies have shown that the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program—if measured through the attraction, integration,
and retention of immigrants—is generally a success. They have certainly argued that the nominee program’s attraction and retention of immigrants is commendable while the integration is still a work in progress. Why is the integration of immigrants a work in progress? The studies reveal that, while the government has shown considerable effort in providing settlement and integration services (e.g. community orientation, language training, job search assistance, job training), “it has been less successful in integrating
immigration policy with other policies, which are highly important in the settlement and integration process.” Primarily, the provincial government has never developed an adequate housing policy to support immigrant arrivals, particularly in the rental housing sector. Secondarily, immigrants’ problem of credential recognition, credit for foreign work experience, the lack of Canadian work experience, and the need for government-funded credential upgrading remain unresolved. These concerns are the ones which immigrants have to face as they take the first steps of their integration into the Canadian society; concerns which cannot simply be reduced as immigrants’ “lack of information.” A closer look at the immigrants’ integration into the Canadian society would reveal that much of the “burden” of integration is upon immigrants themselves as they are supported by their families, friends, community, and nongovernmental organizations; while the government takes the “lesser burden” for their integration. It appears that immigrants are left “to plot their own course” of integration as the government continues to take minimal responsibility to their
American Lampkin helpin’ feed indigent Filipino children
C
alifornia, USA-based Michael David Lampkin celebrates his birthday in a selfless way. Rather than spending money to host a party for his family and friends, he instead donated an amount to the Feeding Program of Philippine Educational Charities to help feed a great number of Filipino children in the Philippines. Lampkin has been supportive of and involved in charitable activities for various deserving children in the Philippines. He has been in the country for more than seven times already, helping in various missions that included giving school supplies, food, and clothing to children of poor families. Corresponding with each other on Facebook, I asked Lampkin what inspired him to step up and be proactive in helping such marginalized children of the Philippines, Lampkin said, “I saw firsthand how there was a lack of school supplies in the Philippines;
and I saw how we have so much here in this part of the world but took these for granted and just threw them to waste that I decided to start collecting these seemingly useless objects like pens, pencils, and other school supplies and turn them into precious items for such children.” He added, “The smiles on their faces that I see every time I would watch videos of their receiving the gifts are what basically keep me from doing what I have been doing for five years now.”
Lampkin is happy to report that many people—friends and even people from other countries whom he doesn’t know personally—have been supportive of his mission and have also stepped up to contribute their own money, time, and effort. To those who are interested in helping poor children in the Philippines, you may check out this website: http://philedcharities. org/p-e-c-feeding-program.

primary and fundamental concerns as newly landed immigrants. The situation presents an irony in that while the provincial government considers immigrants as solution to the province’s population and labor force problem (hence, contributor to economic growth), and that the provincial government has the “power” to enact and implement policies to aid immigrants in their integration into the Canadian society, it has instead taken minimal responsibility. Immigrants are surely potential assets of the province. They not only define Canada’s being a multicultural country but also contribute to making Canada a better society—politically, socially, culturally, and economically. Immigration policies must then be enacted and implemented by the provincial government to address primary and fundamental concerns of immigrants. For, if they are not addressed, then arguing that immigrants are merely a means to

Horoscope Work may be piling up this month, largely because you are putting much energy into fixing problems and revising old work. However, opportunities abound for you to increase your income. Ideas may be best left in the incubation stage. You’re more likely to find success if you wait to launch new projects later, as all of the details are not yet clear.
Love and friendship are tied together in wonderful ways this month. Cementing a bond with a friend or love interest may be tricky, and might require a pledge to live in the moment, but rewarding. Nevertheless, communication mix-ups are probable this month. Don’t commit unless you are certain you can follow through.
Work can be demanding but also invigorating in March. Some restlessness with your current routines is stimulated now, largely due to uncertainty about where exactly you are heading professionally speaking. Focus on doing your best instead of allowing a lack of direction interfere with productivity.
The month can bring great personal opportunities. Personal popularity, especially with friends, runs high. March can bring successful social events, travel opportunities, and special announcements. Your thinking is long term and you are craving a sense of permanency.
Opportunities to increase exposure and to gain recognition for your unique style of expression and creativity are strong this month, dear Leo. While an increase in income may not be realized until May, you are laying important groundwork for future pay raises.
March is very strong for love relationships, dear Scorpio. Opportunities arise to spice up an existing or old connection, or to attract a significant relationship. There is no need to make sweeping decisions just yet, but important groundwork can be laid now. Some of you may revive an old friendship.
You begin March at a yearly career peak, dear Gemini. You may not know the direction in which you are headed just now, but you are certainly bringing more creativity and spunk to the professional table.
You may be dealing with significant delays when it comes to your personal plans this month, and this gives you the opportunity to slow down long enough to make important refinements. Tame impulsiveness and aim to work at the things you do best rather than taking on new endeavors, just for the time being.
Work can pose some challenges in the form of delays this month, dear Sagittarius, but opportunities arise to improve working conditions. Stimulating social connections can be made through business contacts. Be cautious when it comes to mixing personal and professional arenas. 1

Romance and creative self-expression are strong areas for you in March. Others are seeing your value, and admirers are many. Friends can be especially supportive this month, and you are happy to return favors. Your social life is improved and in focus, while more worldly ambitions temporarily fade into the background. Much joy can be found with family and in the home environment this month. It’s easier to balance professional and personal endeavors with minimal interference between the two. More money may be spent on enhancing comfort, beauty, and entertainment at home.
You are likely to feel “large and in charge” this month, and you’re bound to wear your increased confidence and independence well. It’s a very strong month for your social life in general, although close partnerships require considerate attention and care.

Tayo nang Mag-Swimming sa Tindahan ni Aling Sonia
(On Spending Time with Some of the Philippines’ Rock Artists, part 1)
I
n our recent one-month vacation in the Philippines, Inna and I were able to meet up and hang out with many high-profile and even low-key personalities in the Philippine Rock music scene. Did those moments occur out of sheer luck? Of course, not! We planned those meetups. We took the time to contact them, coordinate with key persons and other common friends, attend their practice sessions and actual concerts, and most importantly, use to our advantage my former band Half Life Half Death’s being a part of the Philippine Alternative music scene for more than two decades; and this was what actually made me not a fan of but actually a fellow artist and a friend/acquaintance of many of these Rockstars. In a commercial and Pop-music perspective, these personalities may not stand out as important figures; however, to someone who recognizes the significance in and influence of Rock music on the entire Philippine music industry, Rock artists especially those who have made their marks by having produced albums of originally written materials deserve tribute
and respect. Many ordinary music fans may not know it, but they might have been singing some of the hits of these Rock bands and artists. The pictures feature Inna and me with some of the Philippine Rock music personalities whom we had the privilege of seeing during our recent vacation in the Philippines—Jamir Garcia of Slapshock, Ely Buendia of Pupil/Eraserheads, Francis Magat of Wilabaliw, Victor “Kakoy” Legaspi formerly of Rivermaya, Pepe Smith of Juan Dela Cruz Band, Reg Rubio of Greyhoundz, Lemuel Galleto of The Lowtechs, and Reli de Vera of Sinosikat? The pictures were taken at Infinitif Studios in Makati, on January 23, 2012, where my band Half Life Half Death held its practice sessions for the series of concerts that we performed during my stay. Focusing on the Musical Accomplishments Many fans feel starstruck every time they see their idols and icons; but ironically, many of these selfproclaimed screaming fans fall short in really appreciating and supporting the music itself—they scream and rave about these bands or artists,
Ely Buendia—Pupil and Eraserheads The vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and chief songwriter of the legendary Philippine Alternative Rock band Eraserheads, Buendia is currently fronting Pupil. Active from 1992 to 2002, Eraserheads with Buendia released eight studio albums: Ultraelectromagneticpop! The Best of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
O
n day 4, April 12, 2011, of our East Caribbean Cruise, with the morning scattered showers forecast, the “Oasis of the Seas” docked at 9:00 am at the port of Charlotte Amalie in Crown Bay. Charlotte Amalie, the Caribbean most popular cruise ship port, is the capital and commercial centre of St. Thomas of the United States Virgin Islands. A blend of deeprooted Danish history and today`s way of life, the city was named after Charlotte Amalie, queen consort to King Christian V of Denmark. St. Thomas, with a population of 51,634 and a land area of 31.24 sq. miles, is a constituent district of the US Virgin Islands, an unincorporated territory of the United States. Once the centre of a swashbuckling pirate culture (such as Blackbeard and Drake), the US Virgin Islands is the only place under US jurisdiction where the rule of the road is to drive on the left. St. Thomas was purchased by the U. S. from Denmark in 1917 during the administration of wartime President Woodrow Wilson for $25 million in gold out of US fear that the islands might be seized by Germany as a submarine base during the first World War. Before the gangway opened at 9:30 am we’re ready to board the open-air covered truck called “safari cabs” to begin our excursion tour, “The Best of St. Thomas”. The heart of St. Thomas is the Emancipation Garden Park with the bust of famous Danish King Christian as its focal point. It commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the Danish West Indies.
Located near the garden is Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in St. Thomas. Today, it is a museum housing a collection of Amerindian artifacts and exhibits portraying the colonial Dutch lifestyle. To discover and explore Charlotte Amalie hillside terrain take the “99 Steps” built by the Danes in the mid 1700s. These brick staircase streets also lead to a place called Government Hill. We travelled on to picturesque ridge top road, Skyline Drive, overlooking the capital’s harbour making our way to Beacon Point with views of St. John and the nearby British Virgin Islands. Our guided tour proceeded to the newly- renovated `Mountain Top`, the highest point on the island at the top of St. Peter Mountain. The area, once known as Signal Hill, served as a strategic communication point for the US during the 1940s. The Mountain Top is the home of the world famous ``Banana Daiquiri``,
a delicious concoction beverage of ripe bananas, lime juice (pineapple or orange), dark rum, banana liqueur, and sugar, blended with ice. We had plenty of time to brouse and shop at the Caribbean-themed bazaar after treating ourselves with the daiquiri. From the observation platform the views of the heart-shaped Magens Bay Beach and the surrounding islands are breathtaking. Rated as one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic Magazine, Magens Bay features a mile of white sands, clear turqoise waters and arboretum of palm trees. Nestled high in the volcanic peaks of St. Thomas sits St. Peter Great House and Botanic Gardens, once the haunt of the rich and famous and formerly owned by a Virgin Islands governor. In the 1800s this beautiful place was frequented by Indian tribes and used by pirates to bury their treasurers. The Great House boasts of a classic West Indian architecture and lush botanical gardens and a nature trail with streaming waterfalls, tropical bird aviaries, fish ponds, varieties of orchids and hundred species of Caribbean plants and fruits. Step onto the outdoor deck to enjoy endless photo opportunities of St. Thomas` natural beauty as well as more than 15 Virgin Islands and Cays including Tortola. Before returning to the ship in the late afternoon we remained in town at it`s Main Street, once called
