‘Aquinorroyo’ Conspiracy?

Y

esterday, November 15, 2011, the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) that would prevent the Department of Justice in enforcing its watch list order (WLO) against former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The ruling included three conditions, to wit: (1) Payment in cash of a P2 million cash bond; (2) The appointment of legal representatives, who will receive all legal documents including subpoenas; and (3) Report in person or call the Philippine embassy or consulate office in countries where the Arroyos will travel. In a statement made to the press, the former First Gentleman, Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo said that the Supreme Court ruling was a “triumph of justice.” But the Akbayan Party thinks otherwise. The party’s spokesperson, Risa Hontiveros, condemned the TRO as “a huge disservice to justice” and “a parole before a conviction.”

million cash bond and made bookings for Singapore at 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 7:35 pm, 7:55 pm and 9:00 pm. When the Arroyos did not show up, the flights, which were booked with Philippine Airlines and Singapore Airlines, were canceled. But at 8:00 pm the Arroyos arrived at the Ninoy International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 through an ambulance. They were going to take an 8:50 pm flight bound for Hong Kong via Dragon Air when they were barred from entering the gate at NAIA. In justifying the government’s action in blocking the Arroyos at the airport, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said that the watch list order (WLO) “will stay until the government receives a copy of the decision of the SC.” She also said that the TRO could not be implemented until the Supreme Court “decides on the appeal that the Office of the Solicitor General will file upon receipt of the ruling.”

criminal charges but has not yet been formally arraigned in court can leave the country at will. Indeed, the ruling made the Philippine justice system virtually inutile. The question is: Why did the Supreme Court allow Gloria to travel considering that preliminary investigation is ongoing on six plunder charges and one electoral sabotage case against Gloria? One can argue that Filipino citizens have an “absolute” constitutional right to travel. But the Supreme Court had set legal precedents that the right to travel is not absolute.

Legal precedents In his Inquirer column last November 10, Raul Pangalangan, former Dean of the UP College of Law, said: “To start with, the Supreme Court itself has ruled that the right to travel is not absolute. The Court has upheld the power of the Presidential Commission on Good Government to issue holddeparture orders against ‘persons [who are] known or suspected to be involved’ as Marcos cronies. Yet that power was not explicitly granted in the PCGG’s charter, and was merely implied from its power ‘to conduct investigation[s]’ and ‘restrain any [act] that may render moot and academic, or frustrate or otherwise make ineffectual [its] efforts.’ “In another case, the Court also upheld the power of the secretary Mockery of justice of labor to issue a deployment ban. “The Great Escape” foiled Sad to say, the ripple effect of The power to regulate the exit of our As soon as the news of the ruling the TRO is that it sets a precedent migrant workers is encompassing, was announced, Gloria posted the P2- that any Filipino who is facing to the chagrin of legitimate OFWs who simply want to earn an honest living, including overseas Filipino professionals who are harassed at the airport with queues and inutile paperwork each time they visit family. Yet the Court, citing ‘public safety,’ has upheld the DOLE’s powers. “There is an impression held by Cordially invites you to the many (including myself initially) that

Is “Aquinorroyo” real? Romulus Jove Beltran, a Facebook blogger, said it succinctly: “He [P-Noy] has had enough time to gather all the evidence he needs which is not so hard to do considering that they’re glaring. He’s not making sure of his case if you ask me… the slow pace is deliberate…! And now, Gloria is going to escape because the careful hunter prepared for the hunt much too long…” Which makes one wonder what is preventing P-Noy from filing charges against Gloria in court? It looks like the “Aquinorroyo” conspiracy is real after all.

Conspiracy theory In my article, “Would Gloria come back?” (October 19, 2011), I wrote: “I usually take conspiracy theories with a grain of salt. But there is one conspiracy theory that keeps crossing my mind since the May 10, 2010 presidential election. About two weeks before the election, ‘Aquinorroyo’ started buzzing around in Manila. I ignored it and accepted the results of the elections hook, line, and sinker. ‘No way it could have happened,’ I told my source. “But on June 3, 2010, at a ‘People’s Congress’ convened by the Solidarity for Sovereignty at the Club Filipino, the lead convenor, Ma. Linda Olaguer-Montayre, in her opening remarks, said: ‘We have been told that prior to the elections

“Political” decision Given these legal precedents set by the Supreme Court, the question is: Why did the Supreme Court turn a blind eye to these legal precedents and take exception of Gloria? For one thing, the Supreme Court is stacked with 12 Arroyo appointees, nine of who are perceived to be rabidly loyal to her, including the “midnight” Chief Justice, Renato Corona. Known as “Arroyo Court,” it has consistently issued rulings that were favorable to Gloria and her allies. With the resignation of Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez, a loyal ally of the Arroyos and Gloria’s “line of first defense,” the high court is her “court of last defense.” And the recent ruling seems to manifest that.

the big personalities of the ecopolitical-media and academic elite in our country persuaded presidential candidate Noynoy Aquino to agree to an arrangement with Gloria Arroyo to forestall or obviate any further possible chaos or trouble in connection with the coming electoral exercise.’ “According to OlaguerMontayre, a large amount of money was paid on behalf of Aquino and the Liberal Party to certain personalities who were going to insure that Aquino would win the election. Translation: Aquino would not be cheated. “But what was in it for Gloria when she was not even running for president? One possible explanation could be that the ‘Aquinorroyo’ agreement was made to guarantee that the Arroyos would not be prosecuted by the Aquino administration. And given that until now the Aquino administration has not yet filed a single case against Gloria gives some credence to the ‘Aquinorroyo’ conspiracy theory. I find it hard to believe that P-Noy would enter into a secret agreement with the Arroyos. It simply doesn’t reflect in his character as an honest person. But yet… but yet… it seems that things are moving in that direction.”

Don’t English Me, I’m Panic! by Adonis Fernandez

I

am a new immigrant. I am from the Philippines where Filipino (Tagalog) is the household language and where English is used occasionally as a language in office and school settings. I was convinced that, while in the Philippines, my knowledge and skills in the use of the English language was advanced. I can read, speak, listen, and write convincingly well in English. I knew I was wellprepared to exchange words with any Canadian I’ll meet. Even in their most high-fallutin of terms. That was what I thought. Now I’m in Canada. Now I’m exchanging words with Canadians day in and day out. And, it is now that I have started to doubt my abilities in the English language— the terms I use, my accent, and my sentence constructions. Why will I not doubt it, if time and again, I hear these commonplace retorts: What do you mean? I’m sorry, I didn’t understand. This just happens even if I knew I was picking the right words, pronouncing the accent according to the dictionary, and delivering my lines in a grammatically sound sentence. It is then that I started to realize that there is a marked

difference between the “Canadian English” and the “Philippine English” especially in matters of conversation. I have realized that I usually speak to Canadians with my formal English while they speak conversational/colloquial English. I understand that I and the person I am talking with may be thinking of the same thing/event but expressing it in different terms, accent, or lines. In my young stay, I am particularly struggling with some Canadian terms while I fairly deal with their accent and sentence constructions. So far, I now know and understand that “to shout” is to yell, that “to avoid” is to get rid, that “to invert” is to flip, that “going down” is getting off, that “to tear off” is to rip off, that “to hold/take” is to grab, that “to fetch” is to pick up, that “to be angry or frustrated” is to be upset, that a “comfort room” is a washroom/ bathroom, that a “ball pen” is a pen, that a “police” is a cop, that a “place” is a spot, that a “pail” is a bucket, that a “videoke” is a karaoke, that a “calling card” is a business card, that being “absent” is being away, that a “couple” may mean more than two, that instead of using the pronoun it to refer to an animal/pet, you use he or she,

that “wait a second” may mean wait in five minutes, that “a while ago” may mean yesterday, and most intriguingly, that “see you tomorrow” is see you later. I have yet to learn how to add “eh!” in my phrases, how to use buddy to refer to a male friend, how to say bah bye instead of good bye, how to use “ah” in between words, how to use the terms crap, silly, crazy, sucks, and stupid as a matter of expression, how to call a superior with his/her first name, how to say 50 bucks instead of 50 dollars or five grand instead of five thousand dollars, how to use gonna/wanna instead of going to / want to, how to speak in natural Canadian accent, and how to naturally say: I’m good (not I’m fine) when asked: “How are you?” or “How’s it goin’?” I may soon speak the Canadian way. I may soon speak their terms. I may soon speak their accent. I may soon be comfortable with what I’m not used to. And I may even soon learn to speak French as I see French terms everywhere. But in no sooner nor later will I let my conversational/colloquial English harm my formal English. I would like to put a border line between the two. I would like to be skilled in both the colloquial and formal English. And in no sooner nor later too that I’m going to abandon my Filipino language. I would like to see myself speaking in Filipino to my kababayan in Canada. I would like to see myself speaking in Filipino to my relatives and friends back home. I would like to observe my children’s speaking both Filipino and English. I would like to continually use and hear terms like kuya, ate, nanay, tatay, po, salamat, ingat, atbp. I am proud of my mother tongue. It runs thicker in my veins. At such time, I am sure, I no longer need to panic with my English.

“Sponsoring” your parents with the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program

O

n November 4, Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced that it would not accept new sponsorship applications for parents for the next 24 months. As a result, individuals who want to sponsor their parents to immigrate to Canada can no longer do so. While Citizenship and Immigration Canada is no longer taking Family Class applications, parents who qualify under other immigration programs can still immigrate to Canada. Manitobans wanting to reunite with their parents should consider whether their parents qualify under the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program. How can I use Manitoba’s Family Support Stream for my parents? While the Provincial Nominee Program is not a sponsorship program, parents who qualify under Manitoba’s Family Support Stream can become permanent residents. Because the Family Support Stream has a maximum age, qualifying parents must be 49 years of age or younger. If a parent is older, the Family Support Stream cannot be used. Parents who meet the age requirement and the other criteria of this stream may be able to immigrate to Canada.

must meet all of the regular criteria to be allowed into Canada. This includes passing medical, security and criminal screening. In addition, if a parent has not worked for some time or cannot prove that they will become economically established in Canada, their application could be denied by the embassy or consulate abroad on this basis.

More Provincial Nominees Planned for Manitoba in 2012

T

he Government of Canada will continue to provide Manitoba with a record amount of space in the country’s immigration program in 2012, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety, Candice Hoeppner, announced today on behalf of Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. In 2012, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) plans to welcome 42,000 to 45,000 people under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), including nominees themselves, their spouses and dependants. CIC is on track to welcome a record number of provincial nominees this year and could set another milestone in 2012 if provinces submit enough nominations early on to fill their allotted space in the program. Manitoba’s proportion of all nominations was 24 percent this year. The PNP allotments for 2012 are still being finalized and will be released later. Manitoba’s PNP has more than tripled, from around 4,000 people in 2004 to nearly 12,200 If my parent is approved by people admitted in 2010. If the Family Support Stream does not work, another option is Manitoba’s General Stream. The General Stream allows individuals to immigrate if they score a minimum of 55 points based on their characteristics and other qualifications under the program. While there is no age restriction under the General Stream, older individuals score fewer points under the General Stream’s “age” factor. In fact, parents 54 years of age or older score zero points under the “age” factor. If a parent has never worked or studied in Manitoba and is 54 years of age or older, it can be difficult to score the minimum 55 points. These parents likely need to have at least a bachelor’s degree, 4 years of recent full-time work experience, and a very high proficiency in English or French. While there are many other possible combinations that can allows a parent to score 55 points, parents with less work experience, less education, or a lower proficiency in English or French will have very limited chances to immigrate under the General Stream.

It’s Polar Bear Season Time to add Churchill to your bucket list!

I

spy with my little eye, something white, furry and rolling in snow! I will give you one guess what that might be! If you guessed, polar bear, you win! Here’s a high five! It’s polar bear season in the sub-arctic and as the Polar Bear Capital of the World, Churchill, Manitoba gets ready to host the world during late October and early November. As ice forms in Hudson Bay along the shores of Churchill and Wapusk National Park in northern Manitoba, polar bears start coming out of hibernation and get themselves ready to jump on the ice flows in search of food, such as seal, narwhals, beluga whales, and bowhead whales. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit Churchill in the summer. While it wasn’t polar bear season, we managed to see a few polar bears from a helicopter as we flew over the northeast tip of Wapusk National Park. Seeing the polar bears frolicking in Hudson Bay made me yearn for another trip to Churchill in the winter. A day trip to Churchill would satisfy that yearning desire to view polar bears up close in the blowing snow in the willows. Peek-a-boo, I see a polar bear and it’s coming our way! Shortly after landing in Churchill and hopping onto our bus, we came across our first polar bear. Peeking amongst the rocks along the gravel road enroute to the Tundra Buggy station, we were greeted by a curious polar bear that came right up to our bus. As our tour guide mentioned, this was the first time in his experience in over 20 years that he’s taking travelers to Churchill where a bear has come that close to a bus. On our tour, over 40 polar bear enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and bucket list travellers. Some travellers as I found out, were simply on the one-day tour from as far as China. It may sound nuts, but the German tourist I was sitting next to in the Tundra Buggy travelled specifically to Churchill for the one day tour. Consider this for a moment. He travelled from Germany, for ONE

day to experience seeing polar bears in Churchill. While we were up in Churchill, film and TV crews from all over the world were in Tundra Buggies trolling and following polar bears as they played in the snow or walked across frozen lakes. In recent times, celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Dan Acroyd, Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough were spotted in Churchill. The most recent being Ryan Seacrest last weekend as he and representatives from Coke-aCola made a donation towards WWF activities to help promote polar bear conservation.

The Filipino Journal would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Travel Manitoba, Heartland International Travel and Tours for their assistance and cooperation for coordinating a wonderful day trip to Churchill, Manitoba. Rob Buenaventura was our lucky winner in our “Win A Day Trip to Churchill” sponsored by Heartland International Travel and Tours.

The Tundra Buggy. The main mode of transportation when viewing polar bears in the wild.

Joining us on the Tundra Buggy adventure was Global Winnipeg’s weather specialist, Kate Gajdosik.

Polar bears love to lounge around. This polar bear was chilling in the willows as everyone from the Tundra Buggy was busy snapping photos.

These polar bears are fast. He was clipping along at a pretty good Enjoying lunch on Tundra Buggy #9 with Lindsay Penner and a pace and probably had dinner on his mind. We did too, as this polar nice hot bowl of butternut squash soup. bear was one of the last ones we saw before heading into the Town Photos by: Ron Cantiveros | Filipino Journall of Churchill.

The Winnipeg Jets Report By Ron Cantiveros

A

month and half into the inaugural season of the Winnipeg Jets, hockey fans in Winnipeg are getting a treat to some NHL calibre hockey at MTS Centre, including many of the fans watching from their favorite watering hole and at home. In late October, the Jets started a 7-game 17-day road trip, which would be their longest road trip of the season. Ending the 7-game road trip with 8 out of 14 possible points, they won against the Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers and New York Islanders; lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers; and two overtime games lost to the New Jersey Devils and the Buffalo Sabres. Since then, the Jets have lost to the Panthers and the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets and in their last game, snapped a five-game losing streak against the high powered offence in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Earlier this week, the Jets held the first annual Skills Competition

between a split squad of Team White and Team Blue. The friendly competition between players was primarily for bragging rights in the dressing room and great way for families watch their new hockey team. Judging from fan reactions, our big D-Man, Dustin Byfuglien was the crowd favorite. Evander Kane and Alexander Burmistrov also wowed the crowd during the fastest skater and break-away competitions. Interesting fact, Winnipeg Jet forward, Tim Stapleton, is half-Filipino. We’ll be interviewing him later on in the season for our readers. At time of printing, the Winnipeg Jets have a record of 6-9-3 and tied with the Carolina Hurricanes at the bottom of the Southeast Division. Upcoming Home Games at MTS Centre: Washington Capitals (Nov. 17), Philadelphia Flyers (Nov. 19), Ottawa Senators (Nov. 29), Phoenix Coyotes (Dec. 1) and the New Jersey Devils (Dec. 3).

Maria, Thia earn praises for inspired performances

F

ilipino-Canadian YouTube sensation Maria Aragon and Fil-Am “American Idol” Season 10 finalist Thia Megia received warm cheers from the audience with their rendition of the Philippine national anthem and US national anthem, respectively, during the third Pacquiao-Marquez match on Nov. 13 (Manila time) held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The performance of the 11year-old Aragon who sang “Lupang Hinirang” also earned praises from the National Historical Institute (NHI), which is set to email a congratulatory message to Maria and her parents. Aragon had personally consulted the NHI on the proper singing of the national anthem prior to the fight.

AI Season 10 finalist Thia Megia was also lauded for her rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Her performance likewise created buzz online and was the sixth top trending topic on local Twitter on Nov. 14.

Megia tweeted that being in the ring with boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao was a beautiful experience and another dream come true for her. Aragon for her part was thrilled to have been part of the momentous boxing event.

Ruffa Gutierrez jeered at by Mexicans at PacquiaoMarquez fight

A

ctress Ruffa Gutierrez got a frightening experience when she came to watch the PacquiaoMarquez bout live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saturday (Sunday, Manila time). The actress said she was among the many Filipinos that were taunted and heckled at by Mexicans as they were on the way out of the event venue. The Mexicans in obvious disapproval of the judges’ decision that awarded the fight to Pacquiao,

yelled at the Filipino fans and called them losers. Fortunately, Ruffa and the other Filipinos made it out of the venue unharmed. The former Miss World beauty watched the fight with her mother, talent manager Annabelle Rama, and dad, actor, Eddie Gutierrez. Other local celebrities who were spotted at the MGM Grand Arena were Benjie Paras, Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, Hayden Kho and Vicki Belo, and Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz.

performance at the Miss World. The boy’s singing talent has also earned for him invitations from other countries including South Korea, South Africa, and New Zealand. Clark came from a poor life in Cubao, Quezon City. His father, who once worked as a tricycle driver, never thought that their son’s voice would take him around the word. Horoscope What this period requires from you is cooperation, planning and practical results, and any projects you start on now are unlikely to be complete before next summer, so make allowances for that in your planning.

This month you will be motivated by the need to be open and experimental in your intimate relationships, and also to give advice to people in your working environment. You will be closely involved with another person who has pretty strong opinions, who you should strive not to be unduly influenced by. There is a sudden exciting emphasis on relationships and perhaps long distance connections and travel. It is a really exhilarating experience and you are galvanized and extremely active at this time, and strongly involved with a friend or lover who you share everything with.

At the end of the month, there is a renewed emphasis on the important relationships in your life. This is an area that is undergoing intense transformation which over the years will make you far more aware of the psychological dimensions of a relationship.

It is very likely that you will go on more than one or two quite long trips, and it is also likely that you will have the company of a companion who will keep you entertained with conversation… or talk too much.

All the plans and mechanisms that you have set in place during the course of the year are bearing fruit, work is going along well, and perhaps you are in a peak position, with a lot of respect from your peers.

This is an empowering month for you, and apart from the focus on creativity, you are strongly motivated to put your personal stamp on the home and create a place where you can have control and feel secure.

You become far more focused on the important relationships in your life, and the opportunity for building up something solid.

There are trips to make and people to meet, and they can come from all over the world. Talk is heady and there are all sorts of grandiose ideas and plans… though time will show that those people who promise most deliver least.

You start the month with big ideas, but towards the end of your month it dawns on you that you have to be more realistic, and it is no use just talking about your visions for the family, you have to do something practical… which is what December is all about.

Partners at this time are dependent on you as an audience, and although there can be some genius ideas, a lot of visions are just castles in the air.

You need a sparring partner who can channel your ideas into practical outlets, and November and December are months when concrete results can be achieved because of the interaction of hard-working and conscientious people, who work on projects without getting their egos involved.

E

ye brows are essential as they frame your face and enhance your eyes. Your brows have a nice shape but their colour is wrong. This is the case when you lighten your hair resulting in your brows being too dark or your brow hairs are just too sparse and you need to enhance them. Either way acheving the perfect brow can really help to make you look more polished. In this article we’ll show you on our model how you can lighten your brows in just minutes with a few simple steps. For the entire month of November, book a makeup application appointment and only pay a special rate of $25 plus gst. The extra fabulous perk is that Fridays & Saturdays are included in this promo! This offer is not valid in combination with Groupons and not redeemable for product. You MUST mention the promo “November Makeover Madness” when booking. We’re looking forward to making you look EXTRA GORGEOUS!!!

Tia’s image-consulting firm, PROVICI, has attracted a loyal following in the entertainment and business communities. She has recently styled individuals for print media and live entertainment, and for awards shows such as the Junos and the Grammys.

Before

After

Check out Tia on Shaw TV channel 9 on Tuesday evenings, and Wednesdays before noon. Kung meron kayong questions, comments or suggestions send an e-mail to tia@provici.com. She welcomes your questions and is available for personal appointments. Just log onto www.provici.com or visit Tia at PROVICI Cosmetics, now located at 233 Mc Dermot Ave. or call (204) 957-1544 for more info.

Step 2

Step 1 If you have dark brows and you have lightened your hair sometimes you need to add concealer to the hair so the powder can grab onto it better. Using a concealer brush and Almond Concealer Stick ($26), you lightly dip into the concealer and apply a light to medium coat to the brow hair.

Next , set concealer with Cream Mineral Powder ($24) and a large shadow brush. Swirl your brush into the powder and then apply your brush in a patting motion onto the brown instead of a sweeping motion. You want to build up the coverage.

Step 3 If you like the color of your brows after doing the concealer and power you can leave them as is. Most times you’ll want to further enhance them with a light color powder to bring a little color back into the brow but now the right shade will show. Using our Precision Angle Brush ($15) and Cedar eye shadow ($15) lightly dip into the shadow and do tiny brush strokes onto the eyebrow hair until your desired thickness and color is done.

T h e re yo u h a ve it. Enhanced beautiful brows!

Pacquiao Ekes Out Majority Decision by Adonis Fernandez

The Weigh In by Big Marv @BigMarvShow

Boxing can learn from UFC

N

ovember 12, 2011, in front of millions of worldwide viewers, Manny Pacquiao beat Juan Manuel Marquez via majority decision. Like their second bout in 2008, many felt that Marquez should have been handed the decision. Which means there are likely only two true fights left for Pacquiao. A forth bout with Marquez or finding a way to finally convince Floyd Mayweather Jr step in the ring with him. The real story behind all of that is that boxing has no one to fill the shoes of Manny Pacquiao once he retires. As much as boxing purists would like to scoff at UFC and mixed martial arts, the truth is, they have lots to learn from the warriors of the Octagon. Here are five things boxing promoters should copy from MMA: 5) Fewer Champions. The perception to those who are just casual watchers of the sweet science is that every match is for a championship. With a weight class every five pounds and multiple champions for each weight class, it’s easy to see their point. One belt, one weight class. 4) Fewer Weight Classes. Just like my point about fewer champions, boxing can make it even less cluttered with fewer weight classes. Instead of a new weight class every three to five pounds, make it every ten pounds. 3) Contender Eliminators. Whether it’s a tournament, or putting the number three contender against the number two contender. The Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament was a step in the right direction, however it has gone on

for two plus years. At least we’ll finally see and end on December 17, when Froch takes on Ward. Boxing promoters have to find a way to make every fight mean something. 2) TV Time. People don’t care about boxers if they do not know who they are. Boxing has to showcase their boxers. HBO’s 24/7 does it right, unfortunately they don’t make that show for lesser known fighters. A weekly show on cable would go a long way. 1) Sell Full Cards. Boxing pay per views are sold base on only the main event. Watching the fights leading up to Pacquiao vs Marquez 3, I watched boxers I didn’t know fight, some even fought for championships. Like the UFC, if they would use the lead in promos to tell us who these athletes are, then they could sell us on the whole card as opposed to one fight. In turn, they’ll make future stars that can main event future cards. Mixed martial arts and UFC may never get the respect boxing has, but when it comes to pay per views, the UFC doesn’t need a marquee name that boxing needs to sell it.

I

n what many in the boxing community initially believed to be a mismatch between the “pound-for-pound king” Manny Pacquiao and the lightweight kingpin Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao barely managed to win it by majority decision (Judge Robert Hoyle scored it a draw of 114114, Judge Dave Moretti favored Pacquiao at 115-113, and Judge Glenn Trowbridge had Pacquiao winning at 116-112) before a sellout crowd of 16,368. The event was no different from the boxers’ first and second meetings which were a draw and a split decision for Pacquiao, respectively. Pacquiao pressed the action in each round through his daunted combinations, but he was neutralized by the intelligent display of resiliency and counterpunching skills of Marquez. If the compubox were to be the basis, Pacquiao had landed 176 of the 578 punches, while Marquez connected 138 of 436 punches. Pacquiao had a 117-100 edge in power shots. Pacquiao evidently played the aggressor’s role while Marquez played the counterpuncher.

After Michael Buffer announced the result of the scorecards, fans of Marquez— most likely the Mexican crowd—roared their disapproval. And while Pacquiao was being interviewed by Max Kellerman, the buzz of resounding boos was clearly dominating the MGM Grand. In disbelief and with an accusation of another “robbery,” Marquez swiftly moved to the dug out. Kellerman interviewed him as well. In the postfight conference, Pacquiao argued that he clearly won the fight but that it was not easy for him to fight Marquez’s style of counterpunching. Marquez, on his part, claimed that he had done everything convincingly to win the fight, but

then the judges (again) did not give him his deserved victory. The Pacquiao victory kept alive the wish of many boxing aficionados for the Mayweather superfight; but it raised also some concerns about the Filipino boxer’s ability to dominate counterpunchers. The Mayweather fight, if it happens, will surely be a gigantic task for Pacquiao—for it is against a slick, intelligent, and highly skilled counterpuncher. The community of Filipino boxing enthusiasts has reason to celebrate but not with the euphoria they had when Pacquiao stream rolled over Oscar dela Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, and Shane Mosley.
