Tight race for Tyndall Park Riding by: Lucille Nolasco and Rod E. Cantiveros

W

ith three Filipinos squaring off in the Tyndall riding come October 4th, it will be one of the most interesting races to watch. For the first time in the history of Manitoba, each major political party chose a member of the ‘visible minority’ to win them a desired seat in the Manitoba Legislature. The Liberals have Roldan Sevillano, Jr; the NDP has Ted Marcelino and the Conservatives is counting on Cris Aglugub. The Tyndall riding was created out of parts of Inkster, Wellington and Burrows. It is in the northwestern area of Winnipeg, including the neighbourhoods of Weston, Brooklands, Lord Selkirk, and Tyndall Park. Reports say it has the fourth largest immigrant population and the second largest visible minority population. FJ asked residents in the area as to who they will vote for, and some of them said it doesn’t really matter, it’s going to be a sure win for a Filipino anyway! But others are still undecided who to vote for, regardless if all candidates are Filipinos. It doesn’t matter the ethnicity they say, as long as they are ready to serve the public as honestly and as efficiently as possible. So for those who are still unsure who to vote for on October 4th, FJ asked the three candidates some questions that we hope can help in anyway, in your decision when filling out the ballot.

Roldan Sevillano Jr.

Q & A with the three venerable gentlemen candidates You are one of the youngest, if over the other candidates? Why/ not the youngest, candidate in Why not? this election. Do you see this an Aglugub: Yes, I served for two advantage or a disadvantage? terms in 1999 and reelected in Sevillano: Far beyond seeing it 2003. I hope it will be an added as an advantage or disadvantage I advantage over the other candidate. see it as a wonderful opportunity Having served as an MLA before, to get young people and all people we could say that I am familiar with engaged in democracy. In the same the responsibilities in serving your way that our province is made up constituents and the obligation as of different people and ages, I an elected member of a legislative think it is only healthy for that our body. legislatures be reflective of these There are people who think that demographics. you lack political experience to The Marcelinos are quite popular win the election... What do you in Winnipeg. Do you think this say to that? works to your advantage? Why/ Sevillano: Having managed Why not? both of Kevin Lamoureux’s Marcelino: We are a family recent by election and general whose record of honest public election campaigns, this may be service has remained beyond my first personal campaign, but reproach. But I assure you that it’s certainly not my first rodeo. we never sought the spotlight nor Ever since I got involved it seems the very public recognition of the as though our team has been campaigning for a solid two years. good that we sometimes do. Together we have accomplished You have served Manitoba as much and with hard work and an MLA before and can be taking nothing for granted this considered a veteran, do you campaign is another mountain we think this gives you an advantage hope to climb.

Marcelino: Since Coming to Canada in 1980, I have been active member of this community. I have counselled families in distress as a community elder. I have served as a marriage preparation presenter at St. Edwards Church and I have been engaged in helping immigrant families prepare Provincial Nomination applications. These are part of the experience that I bring with me.

What made you decide to run?

There are people who think that you have served enough and should just focus on a nice retirement. What is your response to that?

Marcelino: I grew up seeing my father, who was a political leader in the village, holding and presiding over meetings of the caucus of elders. To hear and see animated debates among the elders that linger on for hours was a scene that was both fascinating and inspiring. To me, serving the people is the greatest honour that could be bestowed upon a person.

Aglugub: A couple of people have thrown at that question before. Yes, I did retire from my job with the Department of Agriculture and I am enjoying my retirement, meaning that I do not have to wake up early in the morning to go to work. But that is beside the point. Community service is a never ending task. Often times I am called for advice on certain issues, review PNP applications and sometimes assist community organization resolve some issues, etc. We have a growing Filipino community, would you not favor increasing our presence in the political arena an advantage so that we can influence government policies related to immigration, qualification recognition, equal opportunity and work to improve supports for the community? If one of us is successful in the election, would it not be considered a pride of the community?

Sevillano: Ghandi is absolutely right when he said that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Serving the community is something I’ve always enjoyed doing and continue to do. Being an MLA affords me that ability to serve my community and the people at large in a new and exciting way.

What made you decide to run again for politics? Aglugub: Lot of people from the community and other nonFilipino friends of mine have encouraged me to run again. In fact I have been resisting the idea after I lost the nomination in The Maples. I left for holiday instead to refocus and refresh myself after the nomination. I was already planning an extended trip to pursue a project that I have been planning to do. But the temptation to run again was difficult to refuse and with the idea of being able to help more people came to mind crystalize my acceptance to run again. I consulted my close friends and advisers and also said unanimously to go for it.

Cris Aglugub You are from Tyndall area yourself, what do you see as the biggest concern of the people in the area? How do you propose to address this? Sevillano: Having canvassed the entire riding in a little over 3 weeks, it really depends on where this question is being asked. In the Weston and Brooklands area the issues are predominantly health care for seniors and crime. For Tyndall Park and Garden Grove its youth engagement and immigration. It’s about bringing resources back in the community. Over the past 11 years parts of the riding have been slowly neglected and I would love the opportunity to raise these issues on the floor of the legislature. You are more than welcome to visit my website www. roldantoday.ca for my expanded answers. You yourself, are not from Tyndall area...How do you propose to respond to the concerns people in the are might have? Marcelino: Tyndall Park has been my community since my first days in Winnipeg. My kids grew up in the Tyndall Park area. My activities were centered in the Logan and Bannatyne homes that I share with family and friends. You yourself, are from the Maples...How do you plan to respond to the concerns people in the Tyndall area might have?

Tyndall Election Campaign Aglugub: I am only 5 to 10 minutes away in Tyndall Park from Maples where I maintain residence. The concerns of people in Tyndall Park is about the same as in The Maples or in any other community in Winnipeg. We are all concerned about neighborhood safety, property tax, income tax and health care. Under the PC plan, the party proposes to make our communities safer with a tough approach to crime and addressing the root causes of crime. Hiring more police officers and providing more resources to our courts. On taxes, Mcfadyen plan is to lower income tax with tax credits, extend the $100 monthly child care benefit from 6 to 12 months, will implement a $500.00 home renovation tax credit for homeowners also will offer all Manitobans a $500.00 fitness tax credit.

What is your view about the Pinoy culture that whoever helped/supported you in the campaign will be given special favors should you win? For example friends and relatives will be given good positions, etc...Why/ why not?

Sevillano: The fact that they are Filipino, other than that I would sooner chose to believe that we all share the same ability and passion to serve. To answer the question in any other way would suggest otherwise. Martin Luther King hit the nail on the head when he said that our children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Marcelino: I am honored to be part of Greg Selinger’s NDP team as I believe that the NDP have the experience to represent the diverse communities of Manitoba. Aglugub: I am going to take a couple of days off, get a good rest and catch up on my sleep. Just kidding! My first agenda is to thank the people of Tyndall Park for giving me the honor to represent them and I will make sure that they will be proud of me as their representative. Anything else you want to add? Sevillano: I find politics to be a challenging and exciting venue to test your commitment to help others. However, you dont need to be a politician to accomplish great things. For as long as we share the capacity to love, we share the capacity to serve. As for me, whether I’m elected or not, the concerns of the community will continue to be my cause.

Marcelino: None. Aglugub: It has been a privilege to represent Manitobans and members of this community in the past as an MLA. Serving the interest of the people I represent is a tremendous honour. I have always worked to support improvements for the community and to provide service and assistants to my constituents. In this election I will be standing as a candidate for the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party. While I served with the NDP in the past, unfortunately that party has moved away from me and the values that I represent. If elected, I will build on my record of service, increase support for immigration and improving the provincial nominee program. I hope I can count on the support of our Kababayan once again.

Sevillano: The first thing I’m going to do is remove all my signs, I’m getting sick of seeing my name everywhere! But all joking aside, its thanking God and the people that have helped me along the way. Gratitude is a dish best served immediately. Next to that, it’s jumping right in to see what is needed to bring resources back into the community. Marcelino: This is the question that I liked best. The first thing I will do is rest for a day. Then, I will look for office space and get ready for the influx of constituents who will be needing the service I promised. I might even get down on my knees and grab a cleaning rag or two and start scrubbing the floor. This I do to clear my mind and relax all my senses.

Provincial election day is Tuesday, October 4

A Tribute to the ’80s Philippine New Wave Scene Part One: On the Cosmic Journey of Khumb Mela Band

A

rguably one of the most underrated and poorly promoted Filipino Alternative Rock bands that emerged in the 1980s was Khumb Mela Band. Although the group began as a promotional gimmick of Widdie Saulo, the owner of the local shop Khumb Mela (in Harrison Plaza Shopping Mall, in Manila; and in Park Square One, in Makati—which specialized in sports gear, bags, and other stuff including bootlegged and reproduced imported music albums—Khumb Mela Band, which proved to be a musically tight and style-conscious group, took off and carved a name of its own in the Philippine Rock music scene in the 1980s.

I saw them live many times back in the late ’80s, the first time at a concert party billed as “Sneak Attack 2,” held in May 1987 at The Atrium of Makati. The fashion sense of the band members left a memorable mark in my mind. They were among the typically New Wave–attired bands of the time—teased or gelled-up hair, silk or satin longsleeves, madeup faces, boots or creepers, and lots of accessories. Luckily my former band Half Life Half Death got to share bill with them at a few gigs in 1989 and in the ensuing years. Khumb Mela Band used to cover songs like “I Don’t Like Mondays’” (Bob Geldof & the Boomtown Rats),

“My Way” (The Sex Pistols), “The Distance between Us” (Fra Lippo Lippi), and “Dancing with Myself” (Billy Idol). I got to hang out with the band’s bassist in the early ’90s, when he became a member of Mariya, a band whose music had the influences of Pinoy Rock and Synthpop and whose initial members included Cool Carla (Abaya), Leni Llapitan, and Marvin Mendiola of Identity Crisis (another pioneering Philippine New Wave band) and Rozylyn Torres, who used to be a female vocalist in my former band Half Life Half Death. Khumb Mela Band recorded only one album, entitled 108 Music, in cassette-tape format, released independently in 1988 and sold exclusively at the Khumb Mela shops. The band was among the first batch of Filipino bands that the now-defunct Philippine FM radio station NU 107 gave regular airplay during the station’s early days, in the late ’80s. Khumb Mela Band songs that I remember being played on NU 107 were ‘Questions,” “Moving Away,” and “Cosmic Journey.” Before, I never really paid attention to the musicality of Khumb Mela Band. All I knew was, they sounded New Wave because of the incorporation of keyboard sounds and synthesized guitar melodies and the obviously New Wave attires of the band members. However, in retrospect, only in the recent years when I had the chance to listen again to the album after obtaining a copy of it from a fellow music enthusiast that I realized how Khumb Mela Band’s music was ahead of its time, especially the lyrics. Khumb Mela Band’s musical ideology predated that of the

1990s-formed English Britpop band Kula Shaker, which adopted Hinduism as the central theme of its music. Yes, now that I fully understand Khumb Mela Band’s music, I realized that the central theme of their album was Hinduism—what with song titles like “Cosmic Journey,” “Limited Pleasure,” and “Govinda,” which predated Kula Shaker’s song of the same title released in 1996. Formed in 1986, Khumb Mela Band was comprised by Andrew Jeffs (vocals), Randy Capawan (guitars), “Dodo” Isidore Fernandez (keyboards), Allan Dichoso (bass), and Boying Reyes (drums, backup vocals). Lyrics were written by Annie Reyes; music and arrangement by Capawan, Fernandez, and Reyes. The band’s major influences included the popular New Wave bands/artists of the time such as The Alarm, Billy Idol, Nik Kershaw, and Philippines’ very own New Wave pioneers Identity Crisis and Ethnic Faces. By the 1990s, the members of Khumb Mela Band had ended their musical journey together. Jeffs embarked on a solo singing

career. Capawan did sessions for Lampano Alley—the subsequent band of Binky Lampano, the vocalist of another pioneering Philippine New Wave band, Dean’s December. Fernandez became the session keyboardist of The Dawn during its live performances in the stretch of the 1990s. Dichoso did session works for other bands that included Mariya and Mulato. Final Note Sadly, in 2010, vocalist Jeffs passed away due to complications of renal cancer, amidst a brewing band reunion as prompted by a number of concert producers who expressed interest in reintroducing the music of Khumb Mela Band to the current music generation. Back to business for Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC)

September 20 - October 5, 2011

A key to business success is collaboration

The MFBC is back from a summer hiatus and getting ready to MFBC-LACAM joint business luncheon celebrate first anniversary

A

fter a summer of lending their time to many community activities, the year old Manitoba Filipino Business Council hosted their first keynote address. Richard E. Ritchie of Finalco Realty Canada Limited. He spoke to members about the importance of planning an exit strategy for your business. His remarks during the evening emphasized the importance of young

entrepreneurs to consider the timing and options for selling your business well before it happens. Even as much as plan for 10-20 years in advance of owning a successful enterprise. As a business broker, Mr. Ritchie provided the MFBC members with insightful stories on both extremes of successful and failed opportunities selling and buying a business. Keynote speaker, Richard E. Ritchie

President, Jon Reyes along with members of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council were hosted by the Latin American Commerce Association of Manitoba at La Bamba Restaurant. As new business focused ethnic organizations, both groups met to talk about delivering value to their members and partners. The meeting allowed each council to exchange successful strategies in growing their membership and provide unique networking opportunities.

Showbiz colleagues await Jiro’s return

N

ow that Jiro Manio is halfway through his drug rehabilitation program, his mentor movie director Maryo J. delos Reyes thinks that the young actor will be able to bounce back into show business despite the setback. The award-winning actor is expected to be released from a rehabilitation facility in Antipolo in six months time, where he has been undergoing treatment for drug addiction problem since last March. De los Reyes has asked the public to give Manio a second chance so that he can turn a new leaf and rebuild his career. The acclaimed director also believed that the public

Comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas who worked with Manio in the comedy film series, “Ang Tanging Ina.” has also offered to help him return to the limelight once he gets out of the facility. Before going into rehab, his father Andrew related that his son requested him to take care of his nonshowbiz girlfriend and their threeyear old daughter. Manio won 2 awards, Gawad Urian best actor and Famas best child actor, in 2009 for the movie “Magnifico.” He was also a part of the 2009 ABS-CBN primetime television

series “Tayong Dalawa.” However he was pulled out from the show and dropped out of Star Magic’s roster of talents due to unprofessional and irresponsible behavior.

Bahay Kubo, Kahit Munti, ang Halaman Doon… (On Some Philippine Vegetables and Their Local Names)

V

egetables are another common staple food in the Philippines, aside from rice, fish, and bread. Seldom that they are absent as major ingredients in many Filipino dishes, primarily because vegetables abound in tropical countries and, more significantly, because vegetables are more affordable than meat in an economically challenged country such as the Philippines. Examples of dominantly vegetable dishes are pinakbet, lumpiang sariwa, and chop suey.

Here is a list of some vegetables common in the Philippines and their corresponding names in English. Although legumes and other root crops are botanically not vegetables, I have included some of them because they may also be classified as such in a culinary sense. ampalaya – bitter gourd bawang – garlic gabi – taro kalabasa – squash/pumpkin kamatis – tomato kamote – sweet potato kangkong - swamp cabbage labanos – radish

2011 Ford Mustang GT Convertible California Edition

My Ride Ron Cantiveros

Built for Manitoba Summers, Designed to Impress

D

riving a convertible in the summer in Manitoba is guaranteed to turn heads. Driving a convertible with a 5.0 litre V8 412hp engine added to the mix and you’ll catch everyone’s attention. The 2011 Ford Mustang GT Convertible did just that during a bright sunny weekend in August as I took the beast on several unplanned road trips and Sunday Night cruise night along Portage Ave. Rolling up at stop lights, drivers and passengers in cars next too me would give me the thumbs up, that approval grin and nodding of the head. Everything about this Mustang GT was superb, great styling with retro modern detailing, wildly fast, wildly fun, and did I mention an impressive 5.0 litre V8 412hp engine? Lots of power under the hood of this pony. The leather seats along with Ford’s SNYC system refined the interior styling including the 19” factory rims and performance tires. This is muscle car and when you’re burning rubber along

Portage Ave, fuel efficiency is thrown out the window. Published numbers on fuel consumption are listed below. Speed and handling were great. I can definitely confirm published speed test for 0-100km in less than four seconds, or there abouts. As far as winter driving, I would suggest leaving putting the top up or better yet, just leave the Mustang in the garage and let winter pass by. Overall, the Mustang GT Convertible is a real no-nonsense performance sports car that provides great value. I’m certainly not a Mustang aficionado as this was my first ride behind one of North America’s iconic sport cars. Chatter on several car sites and online forums indicate that those aficionados are excited and thrilled to know that “5.0” is back. For a short weekend behind the wheel of the Mustang GT convertible, I can certainly appreciate why those rev-happy pony owners are excited. Specifications: Engine: 5.0litre 32-valve V-8; Power: 412 hp

@ 6,500 rpm; Fuel consumption: 12.2 L/100 km city, 7.6 L/100 km highway; Base price (Mustang GT Convertible): $42,899; Price as tested: $46,449

Binay tops approval, trust rating among gov’t. officials

T

he latest nationwide survey conducted by Pulse Asia from August 20 to September 2 showed Vice President Jejomar C. Binay obtaining the highest approval and trust ratings anew among key government officials for his performance in the past three months. Binay gained the highest approval rating with 85 percent and also obtained the highest trust rating among the top five national government officials with 86 percent. These ratings were improvement from the 83 percent approval rating and 81 percent trust rating registered in June, 2011. President Aquino (77 percent) and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile (65 percent) also registered high approval ratings in the latest survey results. The President also got 75 percent trust rating, followed again by Enrile with 59 percent. Meanwhile, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. and Chief Justice Renato Corona obtained the same approval and indecision ratings. The results showed that same trust and indecision ratings (41 percent against 43 percent)

are scored by Belmonte, while 45 percent of Filipinos were unsure of Corona’s trustworthiness. Corona also registered the lowest trust rating of 31 percent. Binay said he is thankful that he has been assigned by the President to address the housing needs of the Filipinos, and the concerns of overseas Filipino workers and victims of human trafficking. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the higher approval rating for Binay is not an indication of criticism against President Aquino. She said the Palace is happy because the Filipinos are seeing the good things that their officials are doing for them.

wo of the four Filipino domestic helpers working for the family of Moammar Gadhafi in Libya have been rescued. This was announced by Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Raul Hernandez who said Philippine embassy officials in Libya managed to whisked the two maids, Diana Jill Rivera and Mary Ann Ducos, to two cars parked near the Gadhafi residence and brought them across the border to Tunisia. Philippine Ambassador to Libya Alejandrino Vicente said that

the two Filipinos did not bring any belongings with them. They are now awaiting repatriation back to the Philippines, he added. Two other Filipinas, Zenaida Labugen and Racquel Dadang who are still working for a relative of Gadhafi, have not expressed a desire to be repatriated or to go home. The DFA assured that the two Filipinas are in contact with the Philippine Embassy in Tripoli. Hernandez said Rivera and Ducos were expected to be back in Manila within a week.

Pagpapanatili ng magandang samahan

N

Horoscope Try to think in terms of longevity, especially where love is concerned. There is a certain give and take at work in your life right now, and asking for more than you know you really need is only going to make you happy in the short term.

You may feel some pressure from the workplace this month. Chances there are placing new responsibilities on your shoulders. You’re not without the help of the Universe in these endeavors, so forge ahead with faith and confidence.

Libras should know that this is the month when they need to go full bore after their objectives. Pursue your dreams and hopes vigorously and with full concentration and you will find yourself reaching your goals.

Those already in relationships need to look at them for what they really are: dynamic, ongoing partnerships with someone you truly care about. You should be willing to discuss with your partner any minor problems that have sprung up lately.

Life will feel so good this month. There is more than just a little chance that your careful planning could win the heart of a new love interest. If not, those in your life will be amazed by your financial prowess. Well done, Taurus!

Good heavens there are a lot of romantic opportunities for you, both this month and next. These times don’t come along all that often. You’ll need to use you head and choose wisely.

Large groups and traveling also look to be promising activities this month. Joining a group tour of some other country or even an interesting aspect of your own nation would be good at this time.

There’s at least some chance that you will start considering a move to a new place of employment. This could be a good move for you and pay off in the long run.

Your committed partnerships could have you on the run this month. There could be happy surprises and some moments that will have you wondering who put up this wall you just ran into when you weren’t looking, and that is the key to the problem. You could wind up being your own worst enemy if not careful. So pay attention.

You may have a tendency to over spend or over decorate the homestead for the season. You’ll also be gaining massive support while on the job this month. Matters and plans at hand will surprise you.

All your hard work and determination will not go unrewarded, however, especially when coupled with your natural charm, which turns out to be your trump card on more than one occasion this month.

You’ll find yourself meeting many new people this month and some of those interactions will almost certainly lead to the start of a serious and lasting relationship, something you have longed for a long time now.

P-Noy and the Cola Wars

ome people might question President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III’s leadership style but a lot would agree that he’d make a good comedian -- Dolphy and Panchito, Tugak and Pugak, Apeng Daldal all rolled into one. When P-Noy gets himself in a tight spot like making a decision, he morphs into Peenoy, the comedian. And it works! P-Noy is so good at doing it that when he was on a state visit to China, he averted a cold war with China. It was reported that when he met the Filipino community in Beijing, he told them, “Someone asked me about my love life. I said it’s just like Coca-Cola. Before, it was Regular, and then it became Light. Now it’s Zero.” It’s a joke that went viral around the world. According to my investigative reporter James Macaquecquec, P-Noy’s Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang was overwhelmed with thousands of requests to book Peenoy in comedy shows around the world. But while the Coca-Cola joke averted a cold war, it triggered another “Cola War” between the two soft drink giants, Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola. Immediately, Pepsi

Cola ran an ad that said, “Love Life? Go from Zero to Max.” I won’t be surprised if Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola would ask P-Noy to become their poster boy in their promo ads. How’s this for a Coca-Cola ad: “If you’re maxed out in your love life, it’s time to take a break -- relax and drink Coke Zero!” And, how’s this for a Pepsi Cola ad: “If your love life is down to Zero, it’s time to spice it up to the Max – drive a Porsche and drink Pepsi Max!” These ads seem to reflect PNoy’s real love life story. It’s like a roller coaster -- from one girlfriend to another – in short time spans. PNoy could be dating someone this month, then no dates next month, and then dating another woman the following month. Yup, from Max to Zero to Max. Some people call that – “life in the fast lane!” Can’t blame him. He is after all, the most eligible bachelor in the Philippines if not the world… and the most traveled, too! Right after he arrived from China, he announced that he’s going to the United States and Japan. It seems like he’s going to break former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s junketing record. Imagine, three junkets in the month of September? And possibly a side trip to Mexico? Hmm…

Funny, but I just heard that one of P-Noy’s criteria for visiting a country is he receives a doctoral degree from a university in that country. In New York, he’d be conferred a doctoral degree from the prestigious Fordham University. No, there’s no truth that the conferment comes with an honorarium. The conferment is honoris causa (“for the sake of the honor”) and not honorarium causa (for the sake of money). I also heard that P-Noy’s travel secretary is still “shopping” for a university in England who’d confer P-Noy an honorary doctoral degree. So far there are no takers. Why don’t they try Nigeria? Nigeria has the only university in the world that specializes in scams. Have you ever received a Nigerian letter? I think it’s about time P-Noy stop collecting honorary degrees and get a real degree; that is, MD or Marriage Degree. With so many ex-girlfriends – around 24 including some who denied meeting him – he shouldn’t have any difficulty finding someone with a Coca-Cola body and Pepsi Max energy. Talking of marriage, P-Noy’s former girlfriend, Shalani Soledad, is getting married to congressman Roman Romulo. When P-Noy was

told the news, his reaction was an ice-cold Zero, “I was not aware.” And talking about “talking,” the rumor that P-Noy was dating celebrity Iza Calzado was just that, a rumor. In reaction to the buzz going around in the chismis circuit, Iza said, “Talking doesn’t equate with dating the president.” Well, “talking” is always a good start, which could lead to something better. It would be different if it’s “look only” or as we say it in Tagalog, “Ligaw tingin,” which means, literally, “courting by looking.” Isn’t that how the apes do it? But it’s effective -- from Zero to Max… instantly! Iza said that she had recently broken up with her longtime boyfriend and isn’t ready to go into dating again. Well, that puts her now at par with P-Noy… Zero. Like they say, “Misery loves company.” P-Noy’s apple of his eye… While speaking in Bais City, Negros Oriental last week, P-Noy mentioned twice in his speech that he finds Mayor Karen Villanueva – a 31-yearold chinita -- “gwapa” or beautiful. Never give up P-Noy! One of these days, a beautiful Pinay with a CocaCola body and who drinks Pepsi Max will appear in your life. News report… “President Benigno Aquino III said he would present a recovery and reconstruction package to newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda during his official visit to Tokyo at the end of the month,” says the news report. PNoy was reported to have said, “We are preparing a package on how we can assist them to recover after that. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and now that they are the ones who are in need, we want to be able to repay them.”

If I remember it right, when P-Noy offered to send volunteers to help the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan, the Japanese government politely declined his offer. Now, P-Noy is raising the bar – he wants to show the Japanese how to recover and reconstruct after a major catastrophe, which reminds me how it was done when typhoon Ondoy struck Manila two years ago – pointing fingers! Yesterday’s “joke of the day”… Speaking to Chinese investors in China, P-Noy deadpanned, “Now is the time for Chinese firms to invest in infrastructure, tourism and agriculture projects in the Philippines as it would soon be the region’s northern gateway and emerging economic power.” Tawa naman. Emerging economic power? That’s funny. He he he… Today’s “joke of the day”… The Department of Foreign Affair announced, “Aside from promoting the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III will deliver a lecture on how to fight corruption in government and on people empowerment during his visit to the United States.” Huh? How to fight corruption??? Tawa naman……….. Pleeeze, tawa naman kayo diyan. Nobody’s laughing? Hmm… In Mexico… President Felipe Calderon said that P-Noy will always be welcome to visit his country. Perhaps, P-Noy can deliver a lecture on how to fight drug trafficking in Mexico. Send the “Alabang Boys” to Mexico! Now, that’s not funny. Boo… boo…. I wonder what’s next on Peenoy’s comedy act?

How Immigration Investigates Work History

I

n immigration applications for permanent residency, applicants are asked to give a time line of their work history and also need to include work reference letters. Just because a person fills out the immigration form and puts in the reference letters does not mean that everything submitted will be believed. When reviewing an immigration file, immigration officers sometimes do additional investigations. In some cases, these investigations are done without the applicant’s knowledge. What sort of investigations do immigration officers do? Earlier in September, the Federal Court of Canada handed down a decision in the case of Kahin v Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. In this case, Mr. Kahin challenged a refusal of his permanent residency because the immigration officer did not give him a chance to respond to concerns she had from her independent investigation.
