EDITORIAL THE SENSE OF HEARING
T
he sense of hearing lies in one of the most important organs in our body and allows us to hear and to listen to everything happening around us as well as being responsible for our balance. All the sounds we can hear can be classified and distinguished according to their origin and intention. Sounds which come from nature and make us feel astonishment, fear or restlessness like the waves hitting the coast, the wind rocking the branches of the trees, the birds singing at dawn, etc. Sounds which are produced by the voices from a familiar atmosphere and which can bring us peace, cheer us up, give us consolation. Sounds made by musicians for our enjoyment which take us to imaginary and fantastic worlds where we can float in spatial weightlessness. Another aspect that we must not forget about is that the sense of hearing is part of communication. We must learn not only to hear but also to listen. Let us open our ears
and our minds to new messages, new ideas, and new cultures. The world is opening its doors to us, let us not be frightened and give a chance to knowledge and feelings through our five senses.

The end of the project is coming to an end at a very fast pace. Though tired, the Portuguese Comenius team engaged in the activities enthusiastically. In the following pages, dear reader, you will find out what we have done in order to prepare ourselves for the final project meeting.
I
n what concerns to the questionnaires answered by the Portuguese students, we organized the answers in four categories: hearing “as” health, hearing facts, nature facts and questions on personal opinion. On hearing “as” health, we have the questions “Do you think that the ability to hear and recognize different sounds influences the child's physical and psychological development?” and “Is it true that music therapy can be used in order to cure illnesses?” To answer that we can see that the ability to hear and recognize different sounds influences the child's physical and psychological development, and this was tested in numerous researches developed in different countries and at different times, particularly at the end of the twentieth century, which confirmed that the influence of music on a child's development is undeniable. Some of them showed that a baby, inside his mother's belly, develop a reaction to different types of sounds. These sounds, in music therapy, can help to cure illnesses like stress and distress and some 3
physical problems, like degenerate diseases, brain damage due to trauma, cancers, hypertension or chronic pain and so on. Now, it's important to know what music therapy is. This therapy uses music and or its constituents, like the rhythm, melody and harmony, by a qualified music therapist in a process designed to facilitate and promote communication, relationship learning, expression, organization and other relevant therapeutic objectives in order to meet the physical, emotional, mental, social and cognitive. On hearing facts, we have the following answers “Does the sound of a person's voice before getting to know them help you to create the first impression about the person?”, “What is the last sense a person loses before dying?”, “What language does a born-deaf person think in?”, “How often people have an audiometric test?”, “How many parts are ears made up of?” and “How many decibelliums do our ears allow before they are harmed?”.
Agrupamento de Escolas de Castelo de Paiva - Portugal
In what concerns to this topic, we researched and found out that some hearing facts that we know are basic parts of the human ear like the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Each one has specific functions like detecting and intercepting sound. About the second question, a born-deaf person doesn't really think in language but in symbols, mapping and associations. There are other types of deaf people, who are born hearing but by being exposed to more than 85 db lost part or all their hearing sense. When people are exposed to high noise levels, they should have a hearing test at least once a year. According to researches 38% of a person's first impression is determined by the tone of voice which may be good if you want to cause a very good impression. Finally, and referring to the question “What is the last sense a person loses before dying?” and independently from the nervous and cardiovascular systems, hearing is slowly affected when a person dies, which means that it is the last sense we lose. On nature facts, we have the following questions: “What animal has the best sense of hearing?”and “Which of these animals cannot hear?” . About these questions, we researched about hearing and we found that the animal which has the best sense of hearing is the dolphin, not just
because they have small openings in their heads but also because those openings can hear frequencies above 80 KHz and can identify fish that are at 200 meters. Fish cannot hear beside the opens in their heads. They can only feel water vibrations. The last category is on personal opinion. In that group we placed questions like “What is your tolerance for noise?”, “How good are you at recognizing voices?”,“What is your learning style?”,“Can you “follow your ears” to find things that you can't see?”, “Do you think that the continuous use of headphones can have a negative impact in your sense of hearing?”, “Does music affect your emotions?”. We think that the correct answer is the answer given by the majority of the people that responded this questionnaire. After we had analysed the results and the graphs we concluded that the tolerance for noise is low for 42% of the inquired people. At recognizing voices, 56% of people are very good at it.
4
Agrupamento de Escolas de Castelo de Paiva - Portugal
Most of the people that were questioned stated that their learning style is aural (auditory musical). 23% prefer to use sound and music. The majority of people (58%) think that with hearing they can find things that they cannot see. 65% of people also think that in the future, by using headphones, they will have problems with their sense of hearing. Finally, we acknowledged that music affects our emotions because there many researches that point out to this conclusion. For example, listening to music makes our intelligence develop and influences our personality. Listening to music is also important to help us to relax after a long hardworking day. Workshop by Associação Surdo-Mudos do Porto
On the project you will the link to the project’s blog of values. The Portuguese team worked very hard in order to research for the required information and produced some fact-files about very distinguished Portuguese personalities whose opinion have huge impact upon public opinion not only at a national but also international level. Here, you have a few samples of the work we have done in these two years. by António Francisco Cunha
On March 12th, the students of the Portuguese team of F.I.V.E. Project, attended a workshop by a member of Associação de Surdos do Porto, Mr. Armando Baltazar, who belongs to the board of the association and is very much involved in giving formation concerning the Portuguese sign language, among other topics, all over Portugal. Mr. Baltazar explained that he has been deaf since he was thirteen years old and recently he left his position as president of deaf people association of Oporto, to become the first member of deaf representatives in the political arena in Portugal. He also told us about the structure of the deaf people association of Oporto and its story, as well as his life experience and how he so well integrated in society. He shared with us that we all have a problem and that his problem is being deaf. Over all, we were very touched and became aware that deafness is not an obstacle to being integrated and to became as educated as this man is. It was a life learning experience. by André Silva 6

FIVE song The creation of an original music in Portuguese was the one of the many tasks that was proposed to us which we willingly did. This mission included the theme of values and the five senses. Firstly, the students wrote the poem and then, after the conclusion of the writing of the poem, two students with the help of two music teachers that teach in the music academy of Castelo de Paiva composed the instrumental part of this song. This interesting but difficult task lasted two weeks. When the Portuguese song was ready, we, students and teachers involved in the project, started to rehearse it and during the essay, the idea to film it appeared. On the 26th March 2014, we filmed the rehearsal and it was realized very successfully as well the sing language that was provided by a deaf association of Oporto and, then, executed by the students and teachers that work in the project. And so the song A Sinfonia dos Sentidos was proudly born. The Portuguese students were also in charge of composing the melody for the official common song of the project and, again, the students were helped by their music teachers at the music academy: CĂŠsar Freitas and RĂşben Andrade. The 7
end product was a beautiful melody with a pop music sound that was performed and sung at the F.I.V.E.vision song contest during the project meeting in Priekule, Lithuania.
Agrupamento de Escolas de Castelo de Paiva - Portugal
To finish our work, we interviewed these two teachers. The questions were the following: 1. How was it to compose a melody with a pop music sound to the project bearing in mind that it was necessary to respect certain guidelines? 2. As a musician, do you think that the ear is something fundamental to your job? Why? 3. As a teacher, do you think that music influences the spirit of a person? We are only going to show you part of the interview. To the first question, teacher César Freitas replied: “To me, it was easier and more intuitive to compose from a lyric and write the music than doing the opposite. If I had been asked, I would have preferred to inspire myself in the lyrics of the song. It was a funny challenge, because it's not a language which we daily work. However, much of my perception and understanding of music as a language was assimilated and made aware from the hearing and analysis of pop music. So maybe, it was more natural than I had initially thought”. In the second question, the same teacher answered : “The ear, as an instrumental body, is essential to a musician, music isn't a language that is expressed through sound. However, if we are talking about the "ear" as in the jargon of the musicians, the ability we have developed over the years
allow us to perceive and distinguish rhythms, notes, harmony and timbre; it's equally important for the formation of a good and complete musician. We can find that there are numerous musicians, who have no theoretical knowledge of any kind, nor have they read any type of musical notation or encryption musical score and still manage to make music, all through a developed ear, often without even a teacher to guide him. Making music without knowing how to read it, just by using your ear, so yes, even an amateur musician's ear is indispensable. “
Our music teachers César Freitas and Rúben Andrade 8
Agrupamento de Escolas de Castelo de Paiva - Portugal
For the third question, the teacher referred that “music can influence the spirit of a person more often and deeper than the majority think. Music therapy is a reality that is accepted within the scientific community. I think that all the people have a closer experience with a music theme. I know the moods, feelings, emotions that many music themes provoke in me and when I feel, I need to hear this or that subject, I really need to do it. I can also share with you that a few people who also live this kind of experience that, at times of greatest emotional fragility, should not listen to certain musical types, because one gets emotional in a way that is not always desirable or appropriate. To conclude, it's important to refer that the melody of the songs has an instrumental that is executed for piano and flute by two students that are responsible for its creation, as they study music under these music teachers' tuition.

To finish, we would like to gently thank the teachers that helped us in this task and to the president of Deaf-Dumb Association of Oporto for teaching people who are engaged in this project to sing the chorus of the Portuguese song in Portuguese sign language. by Ana Sousa and Bruna Duarte

Debating society The debating society is a very important place in which we can improve our English and organize our ideas in a logical way. It also promotes our rhetorical speeches in a foreign language and fosters social interaction. At the debating society we debate every week in order to be prepared to debate any possible motion that may be presented by the adjudicators. We do prove our English abilities while defending or opposing a motion. And how we so strongly defend our points of view. Before the debate starts, the speakers, respectively with their teams prepare the surprise motion and discuss the best strategies and the best points of views to win the debate. The speakers are divided into four teams. Two teams defend the motion and the other two teams oppose the motion. The first speaker can limit the motion, thus setting the boundaries of the debate. The last speakers of the two last teams must give the summation speech. Each speaker has five minutes to speak and they can and should give and take points of information. These points of information can only occur after the first minute and before the fourth minute. During the debate, the audience can show their agreement or disagreement and they
can also give points of information to the speakers who are still on the floor. The audience is an important part of the debating session. This activity show has all to run well. This fantastic intercultural battle of English will end with the winning team and a best speaker. The hall of fame is open but to arrive there it is necessary to work and practice at the school debating society. We are getting ready to the final battle which will happen in the last meeting in Lithuania, in Priekule. May the best team and the best speaker win! by AndrĂŠ Silva

The leaflet While preparing the presentation we were looking for some time for a template for the brochure that should be meaningful. First we came up with the idea of an ear. But that wasn't enough. So we were illuminated by "Dumbo" the Disney character, a very friendly cute flying elephant, that best represents the sense of hearing. Finally, after some negotiation we decided to represent a person's upper body, face and hands, because it's obvious that it best combines the information we wanted to portray and show with the main theme of this Comenius project: the five senses and the multiple intelligences. We truly believe that, at the end, our ideas were nicely organized and exhibited in this brochure. by Eliana Soares

HEARING QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS If we analyse the results of the questionnaire about hearing, we come to a lot of conclusions. At first, we can notice that most people use the aural style to learn, they prefer using sounds and music in order to learn something to working alone with themselves. In general, people like listening to music because it affects their emotions and if they are sad they can improve their state of emotion by listening to some cheerful music. We also realised that a great number of people who answered to the questionnaire think that the continuous use of headphones can have a negative impact on their sense of hearing Furthermore, we can say that most of the people think that the last sense that a person loses before dying is the sense of hearing and many of them believe that the first one is taste.

SEMINARS ON HEARING Last Friday 21, Rafael Garcia came to the school to explain the different parts of the ear as well as to talk about the preventions that we have to take to avoid future problems. Rafael Garcia works in the Otolaryngologist area in Txagorritxu Hospital and Clinical Quir贸n. In his work, apart from people with hearing problems, he also has cases of problems with the vocal cords. After this, he analysed with us the different parts of the ear: Outer ear: In this part the ear captures sound waves and leads them to the eardrum. Middle ear: Here, sound waves are converted into mechanical vibrations. The eardrum is responsible for transmitting the vibrations and the ossicles (hammer, anvil and stirrup) that serve as a means of facing the inner ear transmission. Also we have the tympanic box, hosts previous ossicles, its function is the equalization of the pressures of the outside with the inner ear. Inner ear: This is the place where sound energy, (the waves) are transformed i n t o e l e c t r i c a l e n e r g y. O n e component of this part is the semicircular canals, here we have the sense of balance and e doctor told us how to treat vertigo, with the exert Epley maneuver. 15
Colegio Sagrado Corazón Carmelitas Ikastetxea - Spain
We were also told that we have to take good care of our ears because in the future we could have very serious problems, such as having hearing loss . This happens when cells suffer sounds higher than 80 decibels. We can avoid these problems with some tip: -Reduce the number of sound devices running simultaneously. -Don´t use headphones for longer than an hour and keep the volume below 60%. -Wear hearing protection when you are working with loud noise.
pollution of the environment. To finish with the activity we made up a sound map of Vitoria; we saw which were it most noise polluted areas and which it calm ones where you can only hear nature sound. Once it was done, we spend an hour measuring the level of sound on different parts of a street near the school. We ended with the conclusion that we are surrounded by a wide variety of sounds even if we don´t want to.
In conclusion, the doctor informed us of the importance of the ears and how much we have to take care, knowing how weak they are and how easy it can be to lose the hearing.
In relation with this topic we talked about the levels of sound and we saw the decibel-table. We learned, for example, how different things sound like and which was it level of sound on the decibel-table. We discovered that with our every day things we could be contributing to the global noise 16

EITB RADIO VITORIA
WHAT SOUND IS IT?
Last week, we went to EITB Radio Vitoria to see how it works and to learn curiosities about it and the workers. While we were visiting the place, we were told that there are around 40 people every day in the office. Apart from that, we had been speaking with a young boy who had a mental illness. However, he was organizing everything perfectly, and speaking with us too! He is a great guy, who has been working there since he was 21 years old. After that, we went into the studio, where they have important meetings “on air” with politicians, economists, etc. Also, they have 6 more studios for recording, where they invite musicians, singers, actors and celebrities. One of the most curious things we saw, was how they do calls on a normal telephone and how they connect it with the stage “on air”. When we were finishing the visit, they invited us into the room “on air”, where they were speaking about Facebook and Social networks. One of us took part talking with them. We had a lovely time.
We have done a really interesting activity on the sense of hearing where we had to guess different sounds. First we were been divided into two groups because there were two different activities. Then, in my group, we had to close our eyes and listen to different sounds. We were doing a competition. We had to guess what was causing that sound. After this competition we went to another room and we heard different sounds, but this time they came from a CD. First, sounds that came from nature and then, from the human body. It was funny. When we had finished the game, we reflected on what it would be like if we didn't have sound and we came to the conclusion that all the senses are interconnected; for example, without the eyes it is difficult to distinguish the sound of the rain from the sound of a river. Or the difficulties that deaf people have in their ordinary life. I recommend you try these types of games.

OUR ORIGINAL SONG When we were told to invent a song to sing in our trip to Lithuania, we started thinking of the lyrics and came up with some nice ideas. We decided that the song would sound better with instruments and finally, one of us is going to play the piano. We asked our music teacher for help and she gave us different types of music for our song. We chose the one we liked most but we came across a problem. The lyrics and the music didn't fit. The sentences we had invented were about our feelings and expectations for the trip and the people we are going to meet in Lithuania, but they weren't short enough to fit in with the melody. In the end, we tried and changed both the music and our ideas and could finally finish the song. We are all very excited about the trip to Lithuania and hope everybody likes our song.

ASSOCIATION OF DEAF PEOPLE IN ALAVA (Arabako Gorrak) In February, the Association of Deaf people of Alava gave us a talk about the b a r r i e r s o f communication that people with problems in their eyesight have to face. He tried to make us feel the way he normally feels in society: they must have an interpreter, who acts as a bridge between the world of the deaf and the world of those people with no problems with their hearing. Nowadays there are fewer barriers, but there are still some; for example, the TV does not have subtitles and they cannot go to the cinema. These days technology is helping them to overthrow some of the barriers. We did other interesting activities, like learning how to say our names in sign language and representing situations without sound. 19

Soundworkshop Frederique did some research on the mosquito. With that knowledge we all went to a class of Mr. Visser (a science teacher). First he explained us what sound is. Sounds are vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing. We did an experiment on the pitch range of old and young people. As the tone got higher and higher, the older Mr. Visser could hear less of the noise, while we were getting more annoyed, because of the high sound. We can conclude to that that older people's pitch range is smaller than younger people's. To prove sound are vibrations, Mr. Visser hit against a tuning fork, and held a ping pong ball against it. While you couldn't see the vibrations on the tuning fork, you could see that the ping pong ball got hit away, due to the vibrations. This proved that sound are vibrations. Then Mr. Visser showed us how you can translate the waves of sound onto visible waves on the display of the sound meter. The 21
waves can be measured with the amplitude. After that we made different sounds, which displayed on the machine. So we could see that every sound has different amplitudes.

Values Team work and spirit - (Andre Kuipers) Andre Kuipers was born on the 5th of October 1958 and is a man who followed his dream of going into space. Surprisingly after his graduation, he studied at the University of Amsterdam to become a doctor. During his study he participated in research considering balance, at the Academic Medical Center. Afterwards he went on with this subject at the Royal air Force by looking at again the balance and the medical conditions in space. Later on in 1999 he joined the European Space Agency and became officially a astronaut. His first space travel was in April 2004 on the flight Delta mission. He even attended a second mission in December 2011. At this mission he stayed in space for 5 months and after his return, had to recover from this intense journey. At his journeys into space he had to depend on his fellow partners. Although he was at an older age he did not give up his dream of space travelling and went on dreaming. And with this dream he inspires a lot of other people especially in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands
Andre Kuipers is a well known person which a lot of people look up to. He is famous and very well liked in The Netherlands.
Creativity and expressing yourself Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh was one of the most iconic painters of Dutch history and maybe even the world. He was born on the 30th of march 1853 in Zundert and he made around 2000 pieces of art, all unique in their own way. What makes his paintings really special is that he was one of the first post impressionists of the world. Besides, he makes great use of colour and shading, as he really brings forward his emotional honesty. His most successful painting, Portrait of Dr. Gachet, was sold for 134.6 million dollar (339 million Litas) by Siegfried Kramarsky to Ryoei Saito in 1990. To many people, Van Gogh is an icon of creativity and expressing yourself. A lot of painters were painting just plain images of what the world really looks like, but instead, Vincent chose his own version of reality. He was one of the first people to do that in such a successful, expressive and beautiful way. 22

Questionnaire The outcome of the questionnaire is mostly as we expected. We have noticed that the knowledge of the senses is overall quite good. Most people answered the questions:
The answers were the owl for the first question and hearing for the second. So overall the questions were answered quite well. On contrary to us, the knowledge of the senses is good.

Questionnaire about hearing For this one last time our teams had the VERY last chance to do one of usual and interesting tasks of our project questionnaire. This time it was hearing themed and was made out of 16 questions about this last sense we're exploring. The questionnaire was completed by fifty people from our community. Once again this questionnaire has lead us to some interesting conclusions. The very first question asked if ability to hear and recognize different sounds influences the child's physical and psychological development and most of our Lithuanian people (82 percent) answered that it does influence child's development. Second question stated: if the voice of a person help you to create a first impression before meeting him. Most of the questioned people answered that it only works sometimes. The next question asked if they thought that music therapy is used in order to cure illnesses and majority of the people answered positively. They think that music really does help to cure illnesses and has an impact on one's mood. Moving onto the next question we needed to find out which animal has the best sense of hearing. There were given three animals to choose from: 27
an owl, a dolphin and a monkey. Most of the “points” from Lithuanian community were given to an owl and a dolphin. So which one it is? We'll surely have to figure out that. The fifth question stated: “Which sense does the human lose last before dying?” Most votes were given to touch and hearing. Apparently we don't really know which one it is and there is something we could do a short research on as well. Next question was really interesting since it asked in what language does a born-deaf person thinks. Almost everybody answered the same: these people do not think in language but think in pictures and symbols. Eighth question asked how good we are at voice recognizing and thirty-two out of fifty said that they are very good at it. Probably that is natural for those who have auditory learning style. The answer to the question “How often people do audiometric test?” was, sadly, not surprising that people only do it when something wrong happens. This is a good link for us to think about checking our health more often. What else we found out from this survey is that 32 of us think that fish are animals which cannot hear. In the next question we discovered our most common learning styles.
Priekule ieva Simonaityte Gymnasium - Lithuania
Apparently it is visual and auditorial. The answer to the question if the continuous use of headphones can have a negative impact in one's sense of hearing were almost all positive. And in the last question “Does music affect your emotions?” 27 people answered yes, 17 - sometimes and only 6 said that it does not affect their emotions at all. In conclusion we could state that the ability to hear is very important in our Lithuanian community and we strongly believe that similar situation varies in other countries of project F.I.V.E. It is obvious that hearing, talking and sounds itself is influencing our daily routines, habits and even have a big impact on everyone's living style or point of view.
Workshop on hearing Since project F.I.V.E. focuses on five human senses during the time we were preparing to accept our guests from other eight countries we not only helped our teachers to organize the meeting but also did a lot of activities focusing on hearing. The first thing done was a questionnaire. After exploring its results a bit deeper, we found a lot of valuable information about hearing sense and its use in it. For example most people answered that born-deaf people do not think in language, instead they think in symbols, mapping, associations. And that was a new thing to know or that music therapy can be used to cure illnesses. The second thing we did was visiting radio station "Laluna". There we found out how everything “inside” the radio station works. It was valuable experience to see how everything is actually done. And after the visit we were surprised to see that the voice in reality differs from the appearance we imagined before meeting the person. Most important thing we did in our preparation was creating a song. You could say that the song was a final and most important thing we did since it was like collage of all tasks we did up till now. And it could be truly said that despite all the preparation for the meeting all the countries in Lithuania, it was the hardest thing we did on project F.I.V.E. In conclusion this could be stated: despite the fact that some activities were tiring and hard it was very exciting and valuable experience. It helped us to know more about ourselves and senses we use everyday not even thinking how important it is. 28

A visit to the radio station In one's life span a person has opportunities to visit many various places, but some of them leave a lasting impression. Visiting a radio station is extra - ordinary and always memorable. It is not like a supermarket, where we can go anytime, it's more serious and quite important place. There are so many restrictions in entering the station. There is a definite procedure for visiting the place. Luckily we h a d a chance to go to local r a d i o station in Klaipeda, Lithuania. Since our last project F.I.V.E. visit is going to be here, in Lithuania and the our last theme is hearing, our teachers decided to organize a trip to a radio station “Laluna” in order for us to experience more about hearing and professions considering this sense. We had an opportunity to visit and see how everything there really works. Apparently it is quite different from what we imagined. We reached the radio station at one o'clock. Building doors had a lock with code so we couldn't enter at first. Once we finally got in, there was a person waiting for us. The women who met us explained how the whole 29
radio station works and told us some historical facts about radio station “Laluna”. After the theoretical beginning, our practical part of the field trip began. For most of us it was the first time in our lives seeing the announcer's room. It is soundproof. No sound of any kind can enter in there. There we had an opportunity to see live action of radio announcers. We also visited the recording room where a programme was being recorded. One of our boys took a chance and had his voice recorded. He even was told that he has a great voice which would truly fit for a job in the radio. After having a glance at all of these sections we were ready to head home. Everybody had many topics to talk about in the bus, and few even started thinking about possible career in the radio. We understood the importance of radios in our everyday life and hearing itself. It was a highly enjoyable experience which was way m o r e interesting than a casual day at school a n d encourage d us to l e a r n about and explore hearing even more.

Creating the song „Leaders of the future“ Since our project F.I.V.E is sadly coming to an end, we are preparing for our very last meeting and completing the last tasks our teachers gave us. This final task composing and creating a song was very interesting and absolutely different from what we have done before. It made each and everyone of us think again of what we gained in this project: what we learned, experienced or understood. Firstly we had to create the lyrics of the song. Once we had lyrics we could start thinking about the tune of the song. For the lyrics we were given these key words: cooperation, respect, expressing yourself. It wasn't hard to think of what we would like to say in the song, since we have experienced a lot within this project new friends, expanded English language, debating, travelling, learning other cultures and more. The name of the song came to our minds very fast: „The leaders of the future“. As we're young and full of perspectives and wished to make our future brighter. After we had our lyrics completely done (few times checked by everyone to make sure that it expressed everything we wanted to say) we started creating the tune. Creating the tune was quite hard task. It had
few stages. First only two of us colaborated and started to try to get some sounds, something major, positive, that would sound fun and interesting. Step by step we found the sound which fit the lyrics best. Then we asked more of uus to join in and after 6 girls joined we started the singing „process“. This was probably the hardest but most fun stage of song creation. We practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced... It took a long time to make our voices sound right together, to think of how we'd look on stage when singing this song in multicultural festival. We also had to match our voices with instruments, which didn't take too long because of our talented musicians. Until the very last day we practiced our song, we sang it again and again and we are not yet sure if it will sound as we want in the end. But no matter how it will sound, we are sure that we will be very happy with our final product. This task gave us a lot of new experiences and it was once again very beneficial for all of us. It is a great final project which consist of our main tasks and ideas of the project as well.

As usual, we first started analysing the results of the common questionnaire Here are the most interesting and surprising results of our questionnaire : Question 3: Most of the students (48%) seem to be aware of the fact that music is very often used in medicine or all kinds of physical and mental therapies. Question 4: Most of us were sure that those are dolphins who have the best sense of hearing. It is partially true because the choice depends on the environment. Here on the Earth it is an owl but in the water definitely those are dolphins. Question 5: According to what scientists say the last sense to lose is hearing and it was also confirmed in the answers of the students. Question 12: This question is worth mentioning because it refers to our individual learning styles. Here we should pay attention to the fact that among different people there are different learning styles. Most of us chose visual learning styles (35%). Question 13: 72 % of the students can “follow their ears” in case of sight difficulties. However it may have been just supposed answers without any proofs. Question 15: Half of the students are aware of the fact that headphones can damage the sense of hearing. Unfortunately it does not prevent teenagers from using them very often. Question 16: Music is very important in the 31

Świat to my, jednym tchem, zbierzmy się, Siła w nas, zniszczymy każdy napotkany głaz
This song was created by the students of our school. It is about us, our sport attitude and our strong will. It is mainly about team work, life struggles, sport successes and about ups and downs. The words are very motivating to work because we all know sport is not easy, it is a very demanding and hard job. You have to be creative, be able to express yourself. The phrases for example “Let's go, the strength is in us, destroy any encountered borders” treat about the courage to fight, the importance of team work which definitely help us succeed. As for volleyball or basketball team work is very important. Discipline like swimming requires more individual attitude but sometimes you also try for the others. According to the song: to succeed you have to believe in yourself, pull yourself together and stand to fight.

SWIMMING WORKSHOPS WITH DEAF STUDENTS The swimming coaches and swimming competitors of our school take part in preparations to the most important sport events together with the deaf swimming competitors (National Deaf Team). They train, live, play and spend time together. They learn each other something new, they exchange their experiences To participate in the training of the deaf students, our swimming competitors had to get to know the sign language. Learning of the sign language caused our students a lot of delight and joy. The last common preparations and efficiency examinations (WIN GATE, VO2 MAX) led one of the deaf sportsmen to the Olympic Gold Medal and our school sportsmen to get some medals in Polish Swimming Championships.

The sinking of Marzanna We would like to present you one of our popular customs called “The sinking of Marzanna” . It is rather impossible to do it here so a few words about it. 21st March in Poland is officially recognized as the first day of spring. It says that on that day Marzanna (a specially made “doll”) should be sunk in order to make the winter go far away. It is a tradition dating back to pagan times when the onset of spring was a magical time. Today, it has taken on the form of a playful event enjoyed mostly by children. Marzanna is a doll made of hay, cloth and paper. She is dressed in colourful clothes, a headscarf and stuck on a long pole. A popular verse chanted during this ceremony is “Farewell Marzanna, Marzanna, the winter maiden, make way for spring!” Here are some photos of the celebration:

OUR BLOG ROMANIAN VALUES Family represents an important Romanian value. In fact, Romania is a family-focused society. Romanians appreciate the long term relationships based on trust, respect and loyalty. These are attributes they learn to appreciate early in their childhood. Religion plays an important role in the life of the Romanian people. Most of them are members of the Orthodox Church. Their religion was suppressed for more than 20 years under communism (Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship). Even so, the Romanian persons have not forgotten to pray and hope.
Identity Romanian persons are proud of their country, costumes, history, national heritage and heroes. They respect their past. Even if some of them work outside the country, a part of Romania will always be with them. 39

About us
Romanian personalities
Romanian people are extremely friendly and expressive when they talk. They are Latin, therefore they are not cold persons. They are comfortable with hugs and kisses on the cheek when greeting or departing. During conversations Romanian people use a lot of gestures, touch themselves on the arms, shoulders, hands and stand pretty closely to each other. Hospitality characterizes the Romanian people. They simply adore having guests. Moreover, direct eye contact is appreciated in Romania. If you are going to pay a visit to a friend, it is common to offer a small gift: flowers (in odd number) or some chocolate.
Mihai Eminescu (Romanian pronunciation: [miˈhaj emiˈnesku]; born Mihail Eminovici; 15 January 1850 15 June 1889) was a Romantic poet, novelist and journalist, often regarded as the most famous and influential Romanian poet. He was soon proclaimed Romania's national poet, not because he wrote in an age of national revival, but rather because he was received as an author of paramount significance by Romanians in all provinces. Even today, he is considered the national poet of Romania, Moldova, and of the Romanians who live in the Ukrainian part of Bucovina.

Debate sessions As you all know debating was born in ancient Greece (rhetorical art). Due to democracy everybody could speak in public no matter how rich or poor he was, well educated or not, noble or not. They even had a clepsydra (ancient clock) to count the time for each speaker.
Following the steps of the three famous rhetors (debators) of Athens, Lysias, Demosthenes and Isocrates we spent a lot of time debating at school. Debating about music, hearing pollution, deaf people and other motions:

Quotes European people should share some values such as team work, spirit, creativity, expressing yourself. Here are some quotes about these values.
Team work and Spirit Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success. Unknown Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. Helen Keller (1880-1968, American author) Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. Michael Jordan (1963-, American basketball player) Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story. Casey Stengel (1890-1975, American baseball player & manager) It takes two flints to make a fire. Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888, American author) Teachers call it copying ... we call it teamwork! Unknown
57
Creativity We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down. Curt Vonnegut (1922-2007, American writer) Creativity takes courage. Henri Matisse (1869-1954, French artist) Creativity is seeing what everyone else has seen, and thinking what no one else has thought. Albert Einstein (1879-1955, German-born theoretical physicist) Creativity is more than just being different. Anybody can plan weird; that's easy. What's hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity. Charles Mingus (1922-1979, American jazz bassist and composer) Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill in. Dee Hock (1929-, American banker, founder of the visa credit card association) Creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. Albert Einstein (1879-1955, German-born theoretical physicist)
Expressing yourself Be yourself not your idea of what you think somebody else's idea of yourself should be. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862, American author and poet) I want freedom for the full expression of my personality. Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948, Indian leader) If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all. Noam Chomsky (1928-1936, American linguist, philosopher) Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Bruce Lee (1940-1973, Hong Kong American martial artist) For me art and chess are closely related, both are forms in which the self finds beauty and expression. Vladimir Kramnik (1975-, Russian chess grandmaster)

Questionnaire on hearing The results of the questıonnaıre on hearıng ıncludıng 16 questıons wıth 55 partıcıpants are these below: The questionnaire on hearing we implemented at school showed us that recognising different sounds and ability to hear extensively influences the child's physical and psychological development so we have to prevent the children from noise pollution in their early ages. In Anatolian culture the music therapy is always used in order to cure the illnesses. Turkish society is partly tolerant against the noise pollution. The born-deaf people can think in symbols, mapping and associations. To a great extend, different sounds are recognised clearly. The participants are sensitive on sound health. The learning styles of the participants are different from each other. While we were debating, we came to a conclusion that being used different styles during learning steps cause much qualified learning. The people who can't see the things can use their ears to find objects they need and they use their ears to survive. 59
The participants clearly believe that music is very affective on their lives RESULT At the end of the questionnaire, we concluded that the participants have little information about hearing .However, we determined that the sound is very effective and indispensable factor in social life. With the questionnaire we carried out all the participants enlarged their knowledge on hearing by searching and debating.

RECOGNITION OF THE SOUNDS A quiz show programme prepared about t h e recognit ion of sounds. 1 0 student s took part in and the highest score was 45 out of 50. It was an interesting activity for us. That's because we had fun when we didn't guess what the sound was. We decided that it was too difficult.
THE MEASUREMENT OF THE DECIBELLIUM IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY, MANISA The Project team got help from the local authority called the Directory o f Environm ent and Urbanisat ion. An expert about noise pollution from the office measured the decibel of the noise at certain points of the city; Main Square, bus-station, The Grand Park corner, The Roundabouts close to the high school, High way the traffic lights. After the measurement we placed the results on a city map and we obviously saw which part of the city is noisier than the other. We understood that the results we got are really different according to the parts of the day and city centre. It is the first experience in our lives on hearing we have done.

THE LYRIC AND STORY OF THE SONG WE COMPOSED A young, kind Turkish man called Ali found himself flying on a small Persian carpet in the sky among the shining stars with a full bright moon. From there he looked down and saw the lack of peace on the Earth. He wanted people to live peacefully altogether and in harmony without wars on the surface of the world. Having and sharing the common ethical standards all around the world people should respect each other's opinions. His thoughts and feelings are a must to have a good atmosphere on Earth. Suddenly, his inspirations forced him to speak out the words from his mouth. 'Let's set up a happy world. There should be respect and love. While looking from the sky, everybody should laugh.' When he opened his eyes, he was in bed. It was a dream, but he wanted it to be a fact. He got together with the music teacher and composed a song called F.I.V.E.

THE IMPRESSION WE GOT IN LITHUANIA After a long and tiring travel, we arrived in Lithuania we knew we were far away from our homeland, Turkey but we would spend a week with hospitable, delicate and sincere people. When we first met with our students at school in the morning, we realised how happy they were. It made us happy and close to all partners. To know that a week will pass fast and finish made us unhappy but the friendship will go on .All teachers and students should know that they have real and close friends in Turkey and we will never forget Lithuanian partners with their always smiling faces and their hospitality. On behalf of our school, we thank you very much for your good organisation and guidance.

About some hearing facts we know that are basic parts of ear like the outer hear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Each one has specific functions like detecting and intercepts sound. It is also interesting to acknowledge that born-deaf people don't really think in language but in symbols, mapping and associations. There are other type deaf people, who are born hearing but by being exposed to more than 85 db or because of a trauma they lose part, if not totally, of their hearing sense. When people are exposed to high noise levels, they should have a hearing test at least once a year. According to researches, 38% of the people's first impression is determined by the tone of voice may be good if you want to cause good impression. The hearing is independent from the nervous and cardiovascular systems; therefore, it is slowly affected when one dies, which means that it is the last sense we lose.

A final happy comment The COMENIUS project F.I.V.E. has been a powerful tool to help us deepen into the use of the multiple intelligences through the five senses. The visual-spatial intelligence has been present in the activities developed with the sense of sight, like the photographic rally which had our students looking for curious and artistic aspects of our daily life together with the exhibition of photographs which followed their immersion into an urban adventure. The logic-mathematical intelligence has been present in the analysis of our daily life with respect to the senses through surveys, analysis and the graphic representation of the results. The musical intelligence has had a very special development of the sense of hearing with the composition and performance of the songs in the different languages of the partner schools in the F.I.V.E.VISION song contest and the common song in which we have wanted to highlight the most important experiences lived throughout the project and which was sung in English and in the partners’ native languages . The verbal linguistic intelligence has been 67
present in all international meetings, in the realization of the bilingual dictionary, in the debates, in the online magazines and, of course, in the relationship with both our partners, our students and families.
The corporal-kinestesic intelligence has been practised in the different activities related to bakery (sense of taste), to craftsmanship (sense of touch), to perfumery (sense of smell) and - in the first moments of the different international meetings - with the ice-breaking activities. The corporal-kinestesic intelligence has also been practised in the multicultural festivals with the exhibition of traditional dances. The intrapersonal intelligence has been necessary in order to organize our ideas and to be able to communicate them at all levels, both in the presentation of the works and in the relationship with the others. The interpersonal intelligence has had an overall presence: the ability to interact with the others is the objective of our group work, independently of the country of origin, language, race, etc. The naturalist intelligence has had a wide presence in all the visits we have organized to the different natural environments in each and every of the international meetings. We have had the chance to admire the wonders of nature: caves, mountains, lakes.. and we have learnt to value both the diversity and the common in this great common planet that we share. The emotional intelligence has been
developed through the motivation, perseverance and empathy with which our common project has walked along these years of common project. In summary, the COMENIUS project F.I.V.E. has allowed us to share new ways of observing, getting to know, learning, understanding, working and living. All this has opened the doors to a new dimension: a dimension as European citizens but not just as a paper certificate for a cold institution, but as a reality where people have our same motivations and worries, and feel and live like us. The intellectual process of learning has its space inside our project, but the human side is above: to give name and surname to our fellow partners has given an identity to that anonymous Europe which is sometimes so far away from our daily life. by Pablo Berrozpe
