FIM Europe General Secretariat A look at the past year At the end of 2017, we’ve asked the Secretary General Alessandro Sambuco for an analysis of the year from the point of view of the General Secreteriat, which has its headquarters at Rome, in Italy. Here is his analysis. The year that has just ended has had as a high point the 2017 FIM Europe Congress in Rome. The General Secretariat was directly involved in the organization after the
cancellation of the Congress scheduled in Luxembourg. In reality we are always busy organizing the Congresses but normally we are joined by the FMN hosting them. For the Rome Congress we have met every need with the limited human resources we have available, ensuring at the same time ordinary (and sometimes extraordinary) activities. The result has however filled me with pride and for this I thank the staff once again.
My glance at the recent past cannot but dwell once again on the activity we have already started in 2011, but which has been consolidated above all in the last four years: the historical documentation of all the activities carried out during the years by FIM Europe. Everything that has happened in the past, the actions taken by people and the big and small facts of the history of FIM Europe represent our historical memory. This must
FIM EUROPE INSIDE
also represent a starting point for new initiatives that cannot do without what has been done in the past. To manage the FIM Europe Archive the General Secretariat performs its duties and functions in accordance with archival principles, with regard to the creation, maintenance and disposition of current and semi-current records, including electronic and multimedia records, the selection and acquisition of records for archival custody, the safeguarding, preservation and conservation of archives in their care, and the arrangement, description, publication and making available for use of those documents. "Tempus fugit". We are going to close another four years. It was a four-year period full of activities and communication. I believe that the organizational efforts to create the best working conditions for General Assembly, Management Council, Executive Board, Commissions, Panels, Working Groups have given excellent results in terms of 4
efficiency and comfort in relation to travels, accommodation and meeting rooms. The new formulas of meetings for the Sporting and Non-Sporting Commissions that have seen the constant presence of the President and Council Presidents have certainly facilitated a great circulation of information among the Members and the consolidation of their identity and sense of belonging. Looking nowadays We are constantly working to increase efficiency levels and streamline procedures. Once we have reached the necessary level of quality, standardization and computerization (objectively very close to be achieved) we will also be able to offer a "turnkey" package aimed at managing a CONU, in case one of our "sisters" CONU wants to use it. We continue our research into best practices within the European FMNs administrations with the aim of enhancing and communicating virtuous practices and ma-
king them available to FMNs who need them. I must say that on these occasions it is a pleasure to deepen the knowledge of my colleagues Secretaries General with whom we are gradually creating an even greater interaction. It is thanks to this interaction that mutual trust is created and that level of friendly confidence that improves the flow of information and the solution of problems. Even the occasions represented

Above all, we Administrations
will have to guarantee to our Governance the possibility of having Executive Staff constantly updated on the different emerging issues so that we can prepare the necessary answers. These answers will necessarily have to provide high quality levels and very short reaction times. Today it is unthinkable not to react short times but to do this we need the right subjective skills, specific knowledge and flexibility. This is the only solution to produce an adequate output. This will be our duty, as FIM Europe Administration, for the future.

FIM Europe Director of Public Affairs John Chatterton-Ross reflects on 2017 John Chatterton-Ross
Q. What was your highlight of 2017? A. The 17th September when Ana Carrasco won the World Championship Supersport 300 race! Q. That is a surprising answer from our representative to Brussels, any connection from Ana’s win to the work you do? A. That is why it is my highlight of 2017. Motorcycling needs more women riders. In sport this is significant. We see nothing unusual in women and men competing on equal terms in equestrian sports. To see this in motorcycling sport is fantastic. It is good the 300cc category is promoted as these motorcycles are cost effective for sport and road use, and as Ana proved on the track, a woman can race as well as any man. It is good politically too, making motorcycling more mainstream. Not just an activity for men. Q. Are there other barriers to
more women riding? A. A woman can drive a large car as well as a small one. The seats can be adjusted. With motorcycles there is little effort by the manufacturers to make bikes that fit women and shorter men. I have no idea why motocross derived suspension is used on many road motorcycles. It is more expensive, and in winter riding the risk of corrosion to the linkage is considerable if you are riding in wet climates. It makes the seat height very high. It is completely pointless as a road motorcycle does not need a large range of suspension movement. This means many women and shorter men have to buy the cruiser style motorcycle if they want a low seat and larger engine. This is fine for some, but not for everyone. Cruisers are great on long straight roads but that is far from the case in many parts of Europe. Q. Is there any sign of progress? A. Some manufacturers are now entering what is called the “world” motorcycle market. Motorcycles that can be sold in all markets with a mid-sized engine and in a variety of styles that do not end up with a very high seat. There are signs that production
will be centred in India, in partnerships between companies from the west or Japan with Indian companies. Q. What about developments in the industry generally? A. The motorcycle industry is global. In Europe France is the country where the new Yamaha MT 125cc is manufactured. Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and Austria are also major motorcycle manufacturing countries. When it comes to factories outside of Europe then companies have very different approaches. Most have joint ventures with others – this is seen with many examples in India. The exception is Triumph with their three factories in Thailand. These are fully owned by Triumph and run by Triumph management. There is frequent exchange of production between those plants and the two back in the UK. Q. Of all the issues in Brussels is there one that really stands out as a problem? A. Yes. The Vnuk case. This threat has hung over the sport since the judgment was given in 2014. Together with the FIA we are making progress to an eventual solution. President Dr Srb was appointed to lead this work by FIM President Ippolito. A survey was sent to all affected FMNs and the result was the same opinion as the FIA and the insurance industry on the best way forward. The EU Commission received over 3500
responses to its consultation. Q. Is that a lot for an issue like this? A. Yes, normally these consultations only attract replies of a few hundred stakeholders. It shows how many sectors are affected. I am sure the scale of the response will result in more delays before a revising text is sent to the European Parliament and Council. We are well prepared for the time we reach that stage. Q. Are there any issues that have been finalised in 2017? A. 2017 saw the publication of the GEAR 2030 report by the European Union. The final meeting was attended by FIM Board member Jos Driessen in the Berlaymont building in Brussels. This deals with the strategic future of the motorcycle and automotive industries in Europe. Now comes the implementation of the recommendations. Q. Any in particular? A. Yes, for Europe to make progress on battery electric vehicles there is a lot to do as the report points out. We need much more infrastructure and also more to be done on battery production. Otherwise electric vehicles will remain as they are today – very expensive and a tiny proportion compared to petrol. Q. It is now established to hold a conference within the context of the annual FIM Europe Congress. How do you feel the event went this year? A. I think the team led by JeanPierre Moreau and Silvio Manicardi did a great job. It was an honour for us that member of the European Parliament Wim van de Camp came and spoke. Not only at the conference but also next day at the General Assembly. We also had time to speak with him at length informally over the weekend. Earlier in the year President Dr Srb and Vice President Martin de Graaff held talks with him in Brussels.
The theme was well chosen as the subject of “connected vehicles” is important for the future. Q. Why do you say that? A. There is the potential to reduce collisions particularly at junctions outside of towns where often speeds are higher. We know that this type of collision is a major factor in road safety. Q. Does this also fit with all the stories in the media now about automated and semi-automated cars? A. Yes, it is all part of the same picture. I would stress that the fully automated car with no steering wheel, no controls, no driver - only passengers! Is still a long way in the future. Q. What about semi-automated cars that riders have to share the roads with? A. They are already with us! Q. Really? A. Yes. Now mainly on premium cars but we will soon see these features on more cars. Systems include: • Autonomous emergency braking (both at city speeds and for highway use) • Lane assist – where if the driver loses concentration there is a warning and a small automatic correction of the steering • Road sign recognition that
Wim van de Camp and Inside the Berlaymont, Brussels – headquarters of the European Commission

helps with the speed limit being shown inside the car on the control panel • Advanced cruise control • Systems that help the driver park easily in a small space There are claims by some companies that their safety systems also recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. As we saw with a collision in Norway when a Tesla car hit the rear end of a motorcycle they do not always recognise motorcycles. Q. Staying with the FIM Europe Congress this year – any other aspects that connect with your work and that of the team led by Jean-Pierre Moreau? A. Yes. The 2017 Congress saw the launch of revised agreed position papers between FIM Europe and FEMA. These were written in 2015 and the plan is to revise them every two years as we did this year. Anyone can write a long document - and it won’t be read by busy politicians and officials. These are

short precise papers on all the main issues we face today. Any FMN in any part of FIM Europe can use these papers with national and local authorities. (The position papers can be found at the following link: http://www.fimeurope.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Position-Papers-2 017-FINAL-per-Website.pdf) We said a formal goodbye to Morten Hansen from Norway who was chair of the co-operation group. He has now retired from his work in motorcycling. He is still a rider! For 2018 Francesca Marozza of FMI will chair the group. Q. You mentioned battery electric when speaking about the GEAR 2030 report. That was the theme for the FIM annual debate in Brussels? A. Yes, as you see in the photograph BMW kindly loaned us one of their new scooters for the photocall outside the EU Parliament in Brussels. This scooter uses the technology that BMW employ in their electric car
8
although it needs a smaller number of cells than the car – but they are the same design. Amongst the speakers were students from the STORM project in the Netherlands. They designed, built and rode an electric motorcycle around the world in eighty days (https://www.storm-eindhoven.com) The panel included speakers from industry, those involved with scooter renting systems in cities and Greg Archer from the environmental campaigning organisation Transport and Environment which is very active in Brussels. Q. Finally, earlier in the year we spoke about motorcycle clothing and new laws coming in 2018. Any more news?
The Storm all electric motorcycle
A. I will make a presentation on this to a conference in Finland early in 2018. In April the new law will come into force and motorcycling clothing will have to be tested as a whole garment. Not just the impact protectors. I think the situation for riders will be very confusing. Fortunately much of the clothing sold in Europe is identical to that marketed in Australia and New Zealand. They are developing a star rating system for assessing clothing. I think that will be very useful and with the internet we will be able to access the information here in Europe too. This will be our duty, as FIM Europe Administration, for the future.

Europ ean Europe pionsh an Cham Champ ionshiips: ps: The analysis of FIM Europ e Euro pe 1 st Depu Deputtyy Pre sident Pres ident Martin de Graa ff Graaff At the end of 2017 we’ve asked for analysis of the European Championships to Martin de Graaff, FIM Europe 1st Deputy President and Chairman of the Sporting Council. Here are his reflections. Looking back to the 2017 season we notice many highlights but also some less positive points – for example in many events organisers had to work hard on their tracks in bad weather conditions. On the other side, the crowded motorsport calendar was attractive for an increasing number of participants. In this time of the year all Federations celebrate the successes of the Regional, National, European or World Champions with prize-giving ceremonies. After this the riders take decisions about the next step in their careers. Riders and Federations are satisfied with the new digital platform to issue the licenses, which now is operating well after some minor starting problems. During the last meetings of all Commissions in October and November the Management Council received a long list of proposals for the various motorsport disciplines. In the meeting in December everything was discussed and approved. The calendar with in total 220 events for European Champions or Cups shows the
interest of Federations, promoters and organisers. The successful pyramid models in several disciplines are the example for other disciplines, young riders must have the possibilities to plan their careers for the next steps up to the European or World Championships. News for 2018 in random order Motoball The Motoball Commission talked and worked for a long time about future items and good developments. Even a delegation from Russia attended the meeting in order to introduce the prestigious Europe Championship in Kovrov in August 2018. Also the Juniors will play for their official European Cup in the same week. The organiser will build a big grandstand for this occasion and for the future of Motoball, which is very popular in this country. Besides this
event, a new competition is planned - a Motoball league. This event is divided into two regions. East with Russia, Ukraine and Belarus and West, with France, Lithuania and Germany (the Netherlands are playing in the German competition). The best two regions will play qualifying rounds before May. In September the Semi-Finals and Finals will take place. The Juniors will contribute to the future, in France and perhaps in other
9
competitions the development of electric bikes will go on. In the UK two teams have given a presentation in a Motorshow as promotion for this sport. Trial The Trial Commission evaluated 2017 and showed the statistics with the number of licenses in all categories. This shows the need to pay more attention to the young riders. In the 2018 calendar there will be four events in all categories. The Commission debated a long term strategy, which will be presented when completed. Vintage Two candidates from Belgium and Sweden will enter the Commission, members from different Federations are good for the development of the Vintage events. Chairman JosĂŠ Campos Costa cannot continue to chair this Commission for personal reasons, and his successor is Igor Boskovic from Croatia. The Commission is responsible for many events in all kinds of disciplines. Important is the way of showing and using classic motorbikes. The cooperation with FIVA is welcome. FIVA is a partner of the FIM and is important in the lobby for vintage bikes in several countries. The Vintage Commission is responsible for the regulations and organisation of sporting events with vintage motorcycles. In the world of Vintage bikes there is a lot of potential to extend to more activities, and the Commission members are in contact with their national Federations to increase the 10
events. Supermoto During the meeting in Fiumicino the Commission chairman had a long and good meeting with representatives of the promoter (whose name is XIEM). The rules for the S1 and Supermoto Lites Trophy have been renewed. The new starting procedure has been simplified and will take less time. For young riders there will be events on tracks with asphalt only. The Commission presented the draft of the 2018 calendar, which will be definitive after the next agreements with the Federations and organisers. Enduro and Rally Some renovation in the class structure has been decided: the U20 class will turn into the U21 to harmonize with the FIM classes. The Commission proposed already in the Congress meeting to introduce an E (electric) class. The European Superenduro Cup will be held together with some FIM rounds, and some events are already in the calendar. In the European Championship Enduro calendar we have 4 events on the calendar. For the Extreme Enduro the rules will remain the same, this is also the case for the Bajas. The All Terrain rallies will take place in Greece and Romania. The number of Cross Country Cups will increase. FIM Europe has the intention to cooperate with existing events in the various countries. In 2018 there will be 2 European Snowmobile Enduro events: Romania and Finland. Track Racing The Commission has discussed the procedure of the nominations for Wild Card riders in the Euro Championships Bureau (Commission Chairman, Vice Chairman, Race Director). The reason is the change in the qualifying system for the 2018 Speedway Finals. New is also the European U19 Speedway Team Cup. The SEC finals were successful, except some events under bad weather conditions - this is also
FIM EUROPE INSIDE
the case for Grass Track races. Drag Racing The Drag Racing Commission this year needed more meeting time in order to develop new regulations and proposals. The two events in Santa Pod and the race in Hockenheim were successful again. In the last Santa Pod event even after heavy rain the track crew did a brilliant job to make the races possible. The negotiations with the Scandinavian countries for expanding the competition seem to be positive. In all events the job of the technical specialist of the Commission will be particularly delicate - the technical rules are very important in this high-speed discipline. The development of the Junior Dragbikes is also important - young riders are the future of Drag Racing sport. Positive is the increase of the Super Street Bike. Every year we see more riders in this spectacular class. Road Racing In a special working group the Pyramid Model for Road Race has been discussed with specialists from Federations and organisations and Commission members. It is not an easy task to develop the route for young riders from a basic level up to the international championships and the European Championship to the World Championship classes. The conclusion is that more federations must be involved with their programs for a future structure. Another working group evaluated the Mini Road Race to take decisions for the several classes and the future championship. The Commission planned one event on the 2018 calendar. The Moto2 and the new Talent Cup are successful in the CEV Repsol races, the regulations will be updated. The organiser of the Supermono ESA
stopped with this class, but another promoter/organiser has interest to continue. A contract for 5 years has been signed with a promoter form Hungary for the Street Free Style Cup. On the Hillclimb calendar there is is a sufficient number of races: 6 events in 4 counties. A number of articles in the regulations are changed. In the ICGP Cup events was the average number of starters 28, this class will be continued. In the Alpe Adria Motorcycle Union the 300 Supersport European Cup is increasing in the number of races and participants. The Endurance Cup started in France, in 2018 more Endurance races will take place. This will possible be in conjunction with other international endurance races. The Stocksport 1000 and the Supersport 600 will go on in the WC Superbike races in 8 European events. Motocross & Snowcross The classes will be unchanged in 2018, again with a big number of events on the European Championship Calendar. A new class will be added in the program - the Yamaha 125 Cup. The number of events will be discussed with Yamaha Europe. On the quad calendar there will be again 6 races. New for this class is the qualifying race on Saturday, following to a request of the riders. The Sidecar and Quads of Nations, after a successful event in Cingoli, in 2018 will be organised in Denmark. The European MX of Nations and Women MXoN will take place in Poland. A contract for 3 years has been signed with the new pro-
moter of the European Supercross. This promoter, Sportainment, organised already one successful event in Gdansk (P) in November. The European Snowcross will be organised in Finland; however, the date and the venue is still under negotiation. New is a European Watercross Cup, also in Finland. Finland has experience with Watercross on Snowmobiles. The MXGP Academy organised in 8 MXGP’s the activity for young riders and their parents. After this season the team was busy with the trainthe trainers program in Germany and Latvia. The training in the South of Spain is planned in this time of the year. The requests of Federations and the planning of events is almost ready. Next year the team will also travel to Russia for the training of young riders and trainers. In general the FIM Europe Sporting Commissions are satisfied, motorsport on this level is increasing. This is all made possible by the Federations, their organisers, riders and all our promoters. 11

Non Sporting Commissions; the analysis of FIM Europe 2nd Deputy President Silvio Manicardi At the end of 2017, a year with quite many different activities, we have asked Silvio Manicardi, 2nd Deputy President and Chairman of the Non Sporting Council, to give us an overview of the main items on the “political” table and achievements of the Non Sporting Commissions. FIM Europe, as the name says, is the CONU representing Europe. What is happening from the “political side” in this Continent?
The Public Affairs Commission
Europe is an area where many rules and regulations are born, which are later followed by other areas in the World. FIM Europe closely follows the different proceedings representing our point of view. Regarding our PTW (Powered Two Wheels) world there are some issues of particular interest and I think that electric mobility and automated driving are the most exciting and also worrying ones. There is a very interesting document that I strongly recommend to read and it is Gear 2030-High Level Group-Final
report, which can be found at the following link: https://ec.europa.eu/growth /content/high-level-groupgear-2030-report-on-automotive-competitiveness-and-sust ainability_en The European Commission imagines with a high percentage of electric vehicles and self driving cars in Europe by the not so distant 2030- just 12 years from now! This will oblige us to reconsider our use of PTW especially in towns.

Public Affairs Commission ( FIM Europe/FEMA relations This year the relations have reached a higher level with meetings in Rome, the European city with the highest number of PTW in daily use and in Brussels. A revised version of the position papers has been finalised and distributed to all Federations at our Congress in Rome. It can be found at the following link: http://www.fimeurope.com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/08/P osition-Papers-2017-FINALper-Website.pdf It is interesting to note the new study on mobility in towns performed with help of FEMA members and FIM Europe Federations. http://www.femaonline.eu/website/index.ph
p/library/mobility-test2017/ We invited also FIVA (the Historical Vehicle Association) to attend the meeting in Brussels in order to have the same understanding of all problems that our PTW world is facing. One critical item is the free circulation of ancient motorcycles in many European cities. FIM Europe Congress in Rome As usual during our annual Congress we have organised the “Safety and Mobility” conference. This year the subject was the quite boiling: Sharing the road with Robots - When Motorcycle Meets Automation. This theme has raised a lot of interest with the presenta-

The FIM Europe Non-Sporting Council was held in Rome/Fiumicino (Italy) and was preceded by three Non-Sporting Commission Meetings: “Public Affairs and Road Safety”, “Marketing, Promoting and Industry” and “Touring”. The “Environment” Commission will meet at the end of March in Warsaw but its Chairman was attending the Non Sporting Council. Mr Silvio Manicardi, FIM Europe Vice-President, said: «As you can see from the report of each Chairman, the Commissions did very good work, both in revising the activities of 2017 and preparing for 2018. The results were shared with Mr Damiano Zamana, Programmes Director of FIM. «Apart from the internal activity, there are a couple of external items that are worth our attention. «First, the new developments in automated and semi-automated driving. This poses potential road safety problems for riders. It is essential this technology is designed to take account of all other road users. Cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and drivers of conventional cars that do not have these new systems fitted. «Second, the new focus on 18
electric mobility which is coming fast with new motorcycles and scooters coming to the market. We believe the new FIM electric racing series will accelerate the development of this in particular in increasing the range of these vehicles and the speed with which the batteries can be recharged». «I am very happy with the results of today’s meetings», said FIM Europe President Dr Wolfgang Srb. «The beyond sport activities, our second pillar, get more and more importance and are growing very fast. Political decisions and legislation have a huge impact on the sport and riding in general. It is our responsibility to be as close as possible to the decision makers and to be proactive. «The presence of FIM Programmes Director Damiano Zamana was important as a signal of our close cooperation with the FIM Administration». Public Affairs and Road Safety Commission, chaired by JeanPierre Moreau «We had an interesting meeting - the challenge is to show how strong our organization is and how many people it represents. Motorcycling faces our
new world of automation, electrification, electronics and other new technologies. FIM Europe will look to organise a symposium on the future of motorcycling under the banner “We, the riders”. «The 2017 “mobility test” of FEMA shows once again that motorcycling is the winner in urban mobility. We will always highlight this when speaking to authorities that too often only focus on public transport and cycling. FMI participated in this alongside FEMA with mobility tests in Bologna and Florence. «We will promote the new website www.fim-publicaffairs.com «We commenced planning for our next Road Safety Conference, which will be held in Nantes at the FIM Europe Congress about the link between racing and normal road use of motorcycles. In this way, we will have a more dynamic event. For example, air bag clothing used in sports and in some high end road suits. A second theme will be electro-mobility. FIM Europe was present at the 13th ACEM annual conference in Brussels. The event, titled “Sustainable motorcycling in Europe” was organised by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers and attracted more than 250 attendees from all over Europe, representing businesses, representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, Member States, NGOs and other organisations. The conference addressed the 30
role of the motorcycle industry in the sustainability of transport in Europe and the direction that the Commission is clearly indicating. Some of the topics that were discussed included: motorcycling in cities, traffic congestion and local environmental policies, regulation 168/2013 on typeapproval of L-category vehicles and environmental standards, engine efficiency and electrification of transport, pollutant emissions (HC, NOx, PM), GEAR 2030 and the future of the automotive sector in Europe, and latest market trends. At the high level panel were present Stefan Pierer, CEO of the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM and current President of ACEM, Antti Peltomäki (Finnish), Deputy Director-General of the
European Commission’s Directorate General for internal market and industry (DG GROW), Bernd Lange (German), member of the European Parliament, Claire Depré, European Commission, DG MOVE, Greg Archer, Transport and Environment, Director for clean vehicles, Erwin Segers, ACEM – Technical affairs committee, ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot and Silvio Manicardi, FIM Europe Second Deputy President. The panel openly discussed various items at the presence of FIM Europe Second Deputy President Silvio Manicardi, who represented some issues of motorcycle riders, among which the necessity of the need to consider the rolling stock of 35 million motorcycles when the legislator imposes new rules for circulation following the arrival of autonomous driving.
Stefan Pierer, CEO of the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM and current President of ACEM opened the conference. «Our industry is committed to sustainability, which we understand as a

complex process related to environmental performance of vehicles, road safety and economic viability of our operations», stated Mr Pierer. «Since 1999, our sector moved from the Euro 0 to the Euro 4 standard. Carbon monoxide emissions were reduced by 91%. Nitrogen oxide and carbon emissions considered together went down by 92%. Even more, this reduction in limit values took place at the same time that new and more stringent testing procedures were introduced in European legislation.
«In the coming months, we will start working on the implementation of the future Euro 5 environmental standard. However, manufacturing vehicles requires complex planning and we urgently need clarity from the European Commission regarding the technical content and implementation timeline of Euro 5».
During the ACEM conference several European and international brands showed some of their latest models and prototypes. The members of the Resolve Consortium presented two electric pro-

The consortium is composed of 14 companies that are led by Italian manufacturer Piaggio. Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM also participates in the project.
«As far as electric mobility is concerned, FIM as a sporting entity has already started to promote various activities including the presence in races during MotoGP from 2019», stated Silvio Mani-
cardi. «In particular, at European level, already several activities exist and others have been announced to allow the increasingly widespread use of electric motorcycles also in competitions. «FIM Europe and its member organisation furthermore believe that a proper education in using the actual PTW will also help in reducing pollution and noise in traffic.
«We were particularly pleased to have represented the position of riders and of FIM Europe in such an important context».

The new MotoE™ World Cup will be a leap into the future through the competition of the world’s first Fast Charge electric motorcycles manufactured by Italian company Energica, bringing together performance and zero emissions. In 2019, five races will be held at five of the European circuits on the MotoGP™ calendar. This leaves huge scope for MotoE™ in the future; beginning in Europe with a view to growing worldwide. The new project was unveiled in an international press conference in Rome.
There are currently more than a billion vehicles on Earth. If the rate of growth within the mobility sector continues increasing as it has, that number could rise to three billion vehicles within the next thirty years. This sharply increases the need for sustainable mobility and is driving manufacturers towards more FIM Europe Mag 1/2018
economically friendly solutions. Of those, one of the most important is the dawn of electric mobility. This is why Dorna Sports will launch the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup in 2019. Rooted in cutting edge technology, the zero-emissions series aims to take alternative vision of racing onto the track. Competing as a new class at FIM MotoGP™ World Championship events, MotoE™ will be a globally visible example of high-octane yet zero-emission motorsport – benefitting from MotoGP™’s stateof-the-art TV production and substantial communication platform.
Dorna and Enel are also analysing how to reduce carbon emissions generated by the infrastructure and logistical demands of MotoGP™. FIM Europe attended the world media presentation of the World Cup with Silvio Mani-
cardi, Second Deputy President.
«This presentation is in line with the direction that the political world and even more our society is asking for the to world of motors», stated Silvio Manicardi. «Races have always been a development area for technologies, which are then applied also to vehicles dedicated to urban mobility.
«After the ACEM Conference in Brussels where the European community has clearly indicated the path for the next few years on sustainable mobility, this is an interesting response from the world of competitions. «FIM Europe is following this development with great interest, also with particular attention to the different disciplines of the European championships», concluded Silvio Manicardi.
