The safe ride to the future The ACEM Annual Conference this year was focused on safety, both from technical and human points of view. Two panels were organised and in the second, one of the speakers was Jesper Christensen of SMC. The first panel topic was “Devising an effective safety policy for motorcycling for Europe”. The keynote speech was by Stephan Schaller, ACEM President and BMW Motorrad President. Panellists were: FIM Europe Mag 5/2016

During the event, the new Quality label was introduced by the industry and the first not ACEM institute to receive it was the Dutch Federation, KNMV. At the conference there was a qualified participation of FIM and FIM Europe with FIM Europe Vice President Silvio Manicardi, FIM/FIM Europe Director of Public Affaires 4
John Chatterton-Ross and of course Jesper Christensen and some representatives of KNMV. «It's always interesting to attend the ACEM annual conference because topics of common interest are raised in front of parliamentarians, members of the Commission and experts», the FIM Europe Vice
President Silvio Manicardi stated. «In occasions like this we also have the opportunity to put forward our views on such important topics for the future of motorcycling».

ED WA R D E DWA European Day Without a Road Death Campaign by TISPOL and the European Union
Every police force in the European Union (and some other European Countries) are members of TISPOL. TISPOL is the European Traffic Police Network. Together with the European Union they have launched “EDWARD”, which this year was marked on 21st September. «It would be great if 21st September really were a day with

no death on European roads. The campaign is not just for motorcyclists – but all road users», stated FIM Europe. https://www.tispol.org/edward At this web address there is a promise that everybody can sign electronically. Not interested in signing? That’s ok. It is still worth a few seconds to read it.
Safety is all about what we all do as road users. SMC – the Swedish organisation for road riding motorcyclists – is supporting EDWARD. FIM/FIM Europe requested national Federations and clubs to help this campaign by giving it publicity through internet sites and social media.

On September 14th at the Council Chamber "Giulio Marinozzi" of the University of Studies of Rome “Foro Italico�, the Advanced Course in Motorcycling Management, organized by the Foundation Foro Italico in collaboration with FIM Europe has been presented to a large media audience. The course is a pilot project of FIM Europe with the intention of perfecting a format to make available to the European Motorcycle Federations and their respective Universities.
The main reason why the Course was launched is that recruitment, selection and development of sporting talent in Motorcycling are prioritaire for European National Motorcycle Federations. The principal actors in the process of creating the Champions of tomorrow are certainly the Federations themselves but, in the light of the recent economic crisis that FIM Europe Mag 5/2016
has plagued and is still plaguing our Continent, it is necessary to look for synergies. These synergies will allow, without providing further expenditure from the budget of the Federations, to increase these activities both in terms of quantity and quality as for their regional presence and professional interventions. The educational activities of the Course will be aimed at acquiring specific knowledge for the formation of a professional able to work effectively as Manager of a Motorcycle Team. In particular, the lessons of the Course will be aimed to: - acquire knowledge of international sports law and of the motorcycling institutions at International, Continental and National level; - acquire the ability to manage the team through the knowledge of the legal, tax and
economic aspects, as well as corporate and marketing strategies, defining the objectives and evaluating the relative performances; - acquire the ability to target the team communication; - acquire and develop the personal qualities of leadership; - acquire the necessary skills related to Team Building and Problem Solving. The participation to the Advanced Course is open to graduates who wish to acquire specific knowledge and skills, in order to operate as part of the Motorcycle Sport as Team Managers, even if not in possession of a specific experience in this sector. The participation to the Course is also open to those who already hold such a role, although not graduates, but in possession of a high school diploma. The lessons of the Course will

start on Friday 11th November 2016 and will end on Saturday 25th February 2017. The training activities with the Teams will be held between March and May 2017. The publication of the access procedure to the Course was published on the website of the University of Studies of Rome "Foro Italico" and on the website of the University Foundation "Foro Italico". The deadline for enrollment in the Course was within the 16th October 2016 and the first course collected 21 participants, which is a successful result for the first edition. The course will take place in Italy and will play the role of Pilot Project with the intention to extend the initiative to all
47 Federations which are members of FIM Europe. Each national edition of the Course in Motorcycling Management will provide for the direct involvement of the respective National Motorcycle Federation. The choice of where helding the course fell on the University of Rome "Foro Italico" for its enthusiasm for Sport, being the only Italian university, and one of the few European ones, to be fully dedicated to physical education. «It's a smart initiative and I am willing to participate even if I am already in this environment», states Francesco Guidotti, MotoGP Team Manager. «It's a growth opportunity to deepen topics that I know from experience but which here are scientifically analyzed. There

are similar initiatives for riders and engineers, but it is the first for team managers. I like it because it touches various topics, also the educational aspect». «It's a very nice, useful project for the professionalization of this job. It's a complete project, which makes us understand how to approach this career», comments Carlo Pernat, MotoGP Team Manager. «It's the first time I see such commitment around the figure of the team manager, who still must have basically a great passion for this sport. in the circuits and it it would be nice if the national Federations took a cue from this initiative to start similar courses on their own». «Today at the press conference we’ve had two MotoGP team managers, but I would like to underline that the course has been structured to form team managers in all disciplines and at all levels, non only for the glossy world of MotoGP», commented Rodolfo Romeo, Chairman of FIM Europe Judicial Panel. «I am very excited about the project», concluded Dr Wolfgang Srb, FIM Europe President. «We live in a most

Successful outcome for the first FIM Europe Tour-Assistant Training Course in Spain

FIM Europe cares more and more about Touring Motorcycling and for this reason has developed new programs including the Motorcyclists Friendly Hotels network and has just launched the first Tour-Assistant Training Course. The Course has the aim to have coordinated and standardized Tour-Assistant services all over Europe that were currently lacking. The first Course has been held on SeptemFIM Europe Mag 5/2016
ber 3rd at Honda Safety Center in Barcelona, Spain. Tour-Assistants have been be pre-selected by their respective National Member Federations according to the pre-qualification assessment check-list. The first group of 10 Tour-Assistant candidates was provided with a one-day theoretical and practical riding training on Tour-Assistants' skills at Honda Safety Center. 13

After theoretical training provided by FIM Europe Touring Commission members - Nils Freivalds, Laurynas Baltrunas and Panagiotis – Panos - Kalaitzis on tour organization, all the attendees warmed up for motorcycle practice training, which was split in 3 groups. The Honda Safety Institute instructors are also experienced offand on-road riders and kept an eye on all trainees - Moto-Tour Assistants to make sure they impro-

ved their riding performance. According to Honda instructors, the skill level of trainees was unusually high, compared to overall public, including many riding test instructors. There was a positive remark on the initiative to provide such a training and improve the riding skills, techniques and pass various exercises that should be a “must” for individuals who are planning to run - or are already running - group tours.
At the end of the training day all participants received the Honda Safety Institute's Safe Riding Course Graduation Certificates and all 10 Moto-Tour Assistant trainees were issued FIM Europe Tour Assistant Certificates, which entitle them to provide Moto-Tour Assistant Services. All graduates, now - Moto Tour Assistants will be listed on FIM Europe's website thus FIM Europe ensures there are eligible candidates that could be
Moto-Tour organizers. Each of the Moto-Tour Assistant will have his/her profile information, such as types of tours they organize, languages spoken, countries they are providing the tours to, etc. All this information will be available on fim-europe.com web page and will be available to all National Federations, which therefore will have at their disposal a list of qualified persons to refer to in case they need the Tour-Assistant professional figure. ÂŤWe all spent exciting training hours and participants really enjoyed the training course we organizedÂť, states Nils Freivalds. FIM Europe Touring Commission appreciates all the support provided by the General Secretariat to run this training and hopes this event will be a great initiative for other interested candidates to apply for the next training that could be organized next year.

Styles are changing but racing has benefitted safety on the new motorcycles

I last watched a MotoGP race back in 2011. Not so long ago…but even then some of the traction control systems in MotoGP could be heard distinctly as they came in and out
of operation. Five years later and bikes such as the Triumph Street Twin (an entry level model) come with traction control, a slipper clutch and elec-
tronic “ride by wire” throttle control. – Add to the mixture the now compulsory ABS braking system (for bikes above 125cc in Europe) and safety is transformed. Yes, it may look like a 1960s motorcycle – that is the intention of the marketing department – but the truth is that this is a one hundred percent modern machine. Everywhere I looked in Cologne the theme was the same. BMW presented their new R Nine T Racer. Yes, it is a powerful motorcycle and it too has a 1960s racing look but this is nothing at all like the hard edged modern sports bikes which are no longer anywhere near as po-

pular as a few years ago. Moto Guzzi follows the same trend…well in their case they never stopped! The new bikes though have modern features such as traction control. No show is complete without some genuine old motorcycles and I snapped an early single overhead camshaft 750cc Honda four. Many people regard this model (which came first in 1969) as the original superbike. There was also a very nice BMW R100 helping to promote the sale of Motorex lubricants. Another modern classic has failed to make it into the new age. Kawasaki is selling the last of their classic vertical twins. Unlike Triumph (who build new bikes with water cooling, Euro 4 compliance that just looks like old machines) Kawasaki has judged that engineering a complete replacement is not worth it. The Kawasaki was a far better bike than the earlier Triumph it competed with. Although Kawasaki have a genuine history with this style not many people knew of their earlier models except the Japanese themselves. – So they were less successful at riding the current trend. At the opposite end of things there was the new electric BMW scooter. BMW engineers were keen to tell me that it also features a fast recharge mode too. This is a high power scooter… but you will have to have a large wallet to buy one. Most analysts think the price of battery technology will eventually come down. When it comes to muscle bikes nobody does it quite like the revived German brand Horex. Clearly there is some serious financial

backing for this venture. I hope they succeed and this grand name from the past will become a real force again. Even when you get away from the current trend to classic styles the motorcycles are similar underneath the styling. Yamaha have really set the trend in the last few years with the MT09, MT07 and all the derivatives. In 2016 riders want something that is capable for “real world” riding conditions whether it is a long touring trip or a ride into the city. The narrow focus of the super sports bike has less appeal. The new models also show exceptional fuel efficiency too. – Just as well as some of these classic style bikes have small fuel tanks!

Youthstream, FIM and FMB-BMB are positive for the future

During the Fiat Professional MXGP of Belgium which took place at one of Belgium’s most famous tracks, Lommel, last weekend, the President of the FMB-BMB, Mr Oliver Rougraff, and the General Secretary of the FMB-BMB, Mr Stijn Rentmeesters, had a meeting on behalf of the Belgian Motorcycle Federation, FMB-BMB, with Youthstream President, Mr Giuseppe Luongo, FIM Europe President, Dr Wolfgang Srb, and FIM Board Member, Mr. Jos Driessen concerning the development and future of Motocross, especially focusing on youth activities that will assist and nurture 22
young talent. They also discussed the calendars of the FIM Motocross World Championship and their national championship, and how they will be coordinated in 2017.
As a result of the meeting, all parties are feeling positive and excited about the productivity of their cooperation.

FIM Europe at Norwegian Motorcycle Federation’s Centenary On Friday 5th and Saturday 6th August the Norwegian Motorcycle Federation celebrated its centenary in Oslo. The prestigious City Hall in Oslo, home of the Nobel Awards ceremony, hosted the official celebration in presence of the people who participated in the recent history of the NMF, the representatives of the international and continental motorcycling and nearby Federations. Prof. Marjan Olfers at the FIM Motocross Wo r l d C h a m p i o n s h i p a t A s s e n Prof. Marjan Olfers, one of the key contributers to FIM Europe Working Group on “Minimum Age for International Motorsport” has been invited by FIM Europe 1st Deputy President Martin de Graaff to attend the FIM Motocross World Championship in Assen, The Netherlands. Marjan Olfers is Professor of Sports and Law at the Free University in Amsterdam and is recognised as one of the world´s leading experts in this important scientific field. The above mentioned working group consists of representati-

ves from European Federations, being experts in medical science, training and coaching. Prof. Fabio Pigozzi, Rector of the University of Rome “Foro Italico” delivered also an important part to the results of the working group. FIM Europe is organizing a successful Motocross Championship in the classes 65cc, 85cc and 125cc, as of the age of 8 years. The working group has not identified binding European legislation that would ban riders of this age from
competing. Prof. Olfers has presented the survey to Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo, whose company is the promoter of the World as well as the European Motocross Championship.

FIM Europe MXGP Academy For the last time this season, the FIM Europe MXGP Academy was active in Assen with the Academy for young riders. On Friday afternoon, just before the Motocross Grand Prix, the training sessions were held on the wonderfully prepared track, created on the famous TT-circuit. The riders and their parents enjoyed the program. The weather conditions were perfect and the atmosphere was good: these are the ingredients for a lot of fun and perfect training sessions. Fifteen young Dutch riders in the class 65 and 85cc were trained by John van de Berk and Jan Po-
stema on a part of the circuit. The riders showed their enthusiasm for the opportunity to ride on this track, prior to the famous MXGP. One important session in the program was with the parents in the evening. Martin van Genderen (coordinator and trainer) and Jan Postema took care for this education program. The trainers received a lot of positive reactions afterwards about the workshop “Communication with a young MX riders”. «This workshop has the intention to open up the eyes of the parents and give them some tools
for a better communication with their child/rider», said Martin van Genderen. These kind of “eye openers” always works for the parents. «They want to do the best… however not always in a right way», said Jan Postema. The FIM Europe MXGP Academy is based on education, particularly for children and parents. Both are responsible for the follow up in the future. In other words, some of these young riders can become our heroes on the longer term. Parents are the base of this success, so it’s important to pay attention to this item. For the next season, in cooperation with Youthstream the team will organise again 8 training sessions for young riders, but also for trainers all over Europe.

FIM Europe Club STOCKHOLM The yearly event of the FIM Europe Club was held in Sweden, from September 16th to 19th. It was the second appoin tment after the one held in Italy last year and once again it was a great op portunity to create an unformal meeting among the FIM Europe officials and to discuss about the future of motorcy cling from a saddle instead of around a table. The meeting was a very well organised by Jesper Christensen, and the weekend was characterised also by fine weather, which is not so common in this period of the year. We enjoyed the countryside around Stockolm using several bikes which have been put at our disposal by Aprilia, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio and Triumph. It was enough to fly up to Stockholm to ride in charming landscapesÂť.

«It was really a privilege to be able to show to our international friends how we like to ride up here. «The beauty of motorcycling riding was shared with friends, in a lot of nice twisty roads, with landscapes changing from forest, cultivated fields and water, will all our small islands. We rode on the famous Roslagen from Vaxholm via Öregrund, Norrtälje, a full day with 350 kilometers. It was also great for us to combine country-
side touring with some laps at one of the small tracks we use for training, close to Uppsala. A number of motorcycle manufactures, Aprilia, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio and Triumph supported us with their latest bikes. «It´s all about being together, riding together, not having a real meeting agenda. But, get the friendship, share the motorcycle passion and yes, also exchange best practices in our ambitious work for the FIM. The two national Federations SVEMO and SMC have been quite honoured of hosting this year’s event, and we can hardly wait until next year!»

Executive Board Meeting at Arona
Also this year the FIM Europe has decided to combine a big sporting event as the Motocross of Nations at Maggiora (Italy) and an institutional appointment as the Executive Board. On Saturday, September 24th, in fact, Arona hosted the FIM Europe Executive Board Meeting. Among the most urgent decisions which were taken, the summons of an Extraordinary General Assembly to be held on Friday November 25th in Berlin, on the occasion of 64
the FIM Year-End Events. Such summons was necessary to update the FIM Europe Sporting Code according to what provided by the new system for Continental licences issuing, which will be centrally managed through the FIM digital platform. This important change will start from 2017 and marks another step forward in the process of harmonization of licenses between the FIM and the CONUS.

The 2016 Motocross of Nations, on the stage in these days at the historic track of Maggiora, was an opportunity to pay tribute to 20 years of FMI presidency of Paolo Sesti. A history that began on September 28th 1996, when Sesti was elected for the first time at the head of the Italian Motorcycling Federation. On Friday at Maggiora, a few days after the occurrence, the FMI Secretary General Alberto Rinaldelli delivered to Sesti a commemora-

tive plaque for his 20 years of presidency. During the dinner, organized by Casa Azzurra hospitality to pay homage to the President, there were several FMI representatives together with the FIM Europe President Dr Wolfgang Srb, and Paolo Schneider and Stefano Avandero, the duo who brought again Maggiora Park at the highest levels.

FIM Europe mourns Danijel Vastag's departure FIM Europe mourns Danijel Vastag’s departure: Secretary for Sport in the Motorcycle Association of Serbia - MSS - since
2008 and a member of the FIM Europe Marketing Commission since 2014, he was born in Zemun on November 4th 1982. He died unexpectedly yesterday. We would like to remember him through the description of himself that he had given when he applied to the FIM Europe Marketing Commission, during the FIM Europe Congress in Cracow, in 2014: «From the early days I was interested in sports and I coached water polo, karate, basketball. Motorsport has always been a love for me. After the death of my good friend on a motorcycle I deci-
ded to focus more on motorsport and motorcycle road safety. I started to work in the Motorcycle Association of Serbia in 2008 with a great team of people to deal with the safety of motorcyclists on roads and motorsport in general. I’m still in the same position in the Motorcycle Association of Serbia. I’ve been accepted in the FIM European Commission for safety of motorcyclists on roads in Treviso in 2011 when I got involved and in the National Agency for safety in traffic».
