About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch

The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.

We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.

To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you.

We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

Albanese makes backflip announcement to Labor’s tax policy to try and win back ex-Labor voters A key part of Labor’s policies during the 2019 election was to remove negative gearing and either do away with or reduce the benefits of franking credits. It was Labor’s way of trying to tackle the affordability crises. Now, the federal opposition has done a back flip with the hope to re-engage voters or bring back to the fold ex-labor voters who have become disenfranchised with what the opposition party has to offer. Labor leader Anthony Albanese confirmed that Labor will uphold the current, legislated changes to personal income taxes and maintain the existing regimes for negative gearing and capital gains tax – basically they will do what the Liberals are doing. “An Albanese Labor government will deliver the same legislated tax relief to more than 9 million Australians as the Morrison government,” Mr Albanese said. He confirmed that the Labor shadow cabinet and caucus had ratified the party’s new position. As the next federal election looms over the horizon, Labor is trying to find ways to pretty up the party’s image and their policies. So far, they have introduced dog parks and safe housing for minority groups. Now, they are throwing out their own policies and falling into line with the Liberals.

Again, what does Labor stand for? They used to be the party for the people but now they seem to be a party for minorities and the policies they introduce seem to be more populace in view rather than actually making long term differences to ordinary Australians.

RBA Warns Of Rise In Unemployment Rate Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics and Business Correspandent (Australian Associated Press)

The Reserve Bank of Australia has warned the unemployment rate is expected to increase in the near term due to the lockdowns in parts of the country which will see the economy contract in the September quarter. This is largely the result of the lengthy virus lockdown in Greater Sydney and regional NSW areas. Last month’s lockdowns in Victoria and South Australia will have also left a negative mark, as will the current restrictions in Queensland.

“The economic outlook for the coming months is uncertain and depends upon the evolution of the health situation and the containment measures,” RBA governor Philip Lowe said in a statement. “Beyond that, the bank’s central scenario is for the economy to grow by a little over four per cent over 2022.” Dr Lowe also expects the jobless rate will resume its downward trend, reaching 4.25 per cent at the end of 2022 and four per cent a year later. The unemployment rate fell to a decade low of 4.9 per cent in June.

The central bank left its key interest rate policies unchanged at Tuesday’s monthly board meeting, including the cash rate at a record low 0.10 per cent.

This was the third consecutive monthly decline reflecting the unwinding of pandemic stimulus measures, such as HomeBuilder, the ABS said.

Dr Lowe reiterated that in an environment of rising housing prices and low interest rates, the bank is monitoring trends in housing borrowing carefully and it is important that lending standards are maintained.

Unsurprisingly, confidence among Sydneysiders fell sharply in the past week following the extension of the NSW virus lockdown to the end of this month.

The central bank may draw some comfort that demand for home loans and applications to build homes are falling. New Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the value of new home loans fell 1.6 per cent in June to $32.1 billion. For owner-occupiers, loans fell by 2.5 per cent to $22.9 billion.

“While this was the largest fall since May 2020, owner-occupier commitments remained 76 per cent higher compared to a year ago and 64 per cent higher than pre-COVID levels in February 2020,” ABS head of finance and wealth Katherine Keenan said. The number of home building approvals also fell 6.7 per cent to 18,911 in June, including an 11.8 per cent tumble in private sector houses to 12,037.

However, Australians have got a spring back in their step in other parts of the country after restrictions were eased in Victoria and South Australia. Overall, the weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index – a pointer to future household spending – rose 1.1 per cent after two weeks of hefty falls. Confidence slumped by seven per cent in Sydney, but was partly offset by a two per cent rise in Victoria and a 2.9 per cent increase in South Australia. Sentiment in Brisbane was also up 2.7 per cent, but the majority of the survey was completed before the three-day lockdown in southeast Queensland was announced, ANZ head of Australian Economics David Plank noted. That snap lockdown has since been extended until next Sunday.

National Plan to Transition Australia’s National COVID-19 Response The National Cabinet agreed in-principle to an updated fourstep National Plan to transition Australia’s National COVID-19 Response (National Plan) taking into account the Doherty Institute COVID-19 modelling and the Commonwealth Department of Treasury economic analysis. The National Plan charts the way back.

The National Plan sets out four phases to effectuate this transition. Each phase will be triggered by the achievement of vaccination thresholds of both the nation, and the individual state or territory expressed as a percentage of the eligible population (16+), based on the scientific and economic modelling conducted for the COVID-19 Risk Analysis and Response Taskforce.

The National Plan provides a graduated pathway to transition Australia’s COVID-19 response from its current prevaccination settings focused on continued suppression of community transmission, to post-vaccination settings focused on prevention of serious illness and fatalities, whereby the public health management of COVID-19 is consistent with other infectious diseases.

The updates agreed in-principle today by the National Cabinet are the Vaccination thresholds to move to Phase B and Phase C. The National Cabinet will commission further detailed modelling over the coming months to update and refine the National Plan as required.

A sub-group of National Cabinet consisting of Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory will also prepare options on how restrictions can be eased for vaccinated Australians in Phase B.

level restrictions. Measures may include maintaining high vaccination rates, encouraging uptake through incentives and other measures, minimising cases in the community through ongoing low-level restrictions and effective track and trace, and with lockdowns unlikely but possible and targeted.

Phase A. Vaccinate, Prepare and Pilot (Current Phase) Australia will continue to strongly suppress the virus for the purpose of minimising community transmission. Measures may include accelerating vaccination rates, closing international borders to keep COVID-19 out, and early, stringent and short lockdowns if outbreaks occur.

Phase C. Vaccination Consolidation Phase (≥80% of adult population fully vaccinated)

Phase B. Vaccination Transition Phase (~70% of adult population fully vaccinated)

In Phase C, Australia will seek to minimise serious illness, hospitalisations and fatalities as a result of COVID-19 with baseline restrictions. Measures may include maximising vaccination coverage, minimum ongoing baseline restrictions adjusted to minimise cases without lockdowns, and highly targeted lockdowns only.

In this phase, Australia will seek to minimise serious illness, hospitalisations and fatalities as a result of COVID-19 with low-

COVID-19 disaster payments are now tax-free: Do you need to amend your tax return? By Warren Strybosch

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has declared that COVID-19 disaster payments will now be tax-free. For all of those who have submitted their tax returns before 1st August 2021, you may need to amend your returns or lose the tax you otherwise previously paid. On Tuesday, the Treasury Laws Amendment (COVID-19 Economic Response No. 2) Bill 2021 was introduced into Parliament, confirming Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s comments that COVID-19 disaster payments would now be tax-free. Previously, COVID-19 disaster payments were taxable income. However, after the announcement, they will now be treated as non-assessable non-exempt income. The Institute of Public Accountants general manager of technical policy, Tony Greco, said granting the $750 a week payment with a tax-free status would mean workers will take home more than they did under the original JobKeeper program. Disaster payment recipients can expect to be better off by $90 a week compared with the JobKeeper wage subsidy, based on an annualised $39,000 income of $750 each week. “The main concern is that these payments have always been stated as assessable, so now there’s confusion,” said Mr Greco. “It is a significant shift in treatment from what people have been told and what we have come to expect. According to Mr Morrison, more than $490 million in COVID-19 disaster payments have been paid to over 955,000 workers in NSW and Victoria. The payments, which were increased on Wednesday from $600 to $750 a week for workers who lost more than 20 hours and raised from $450 from $375 for those who lost between eight and 20 hours, are expected to cost the federal government $750 million a week. For those of you who have already lodged your returns and the COVID-19 disaster payment was included as taxable income, you might like to consider amending your returns and potentially getting some money back from the ATO.

CGT exemption for granny flat events becomes law In last year's budget, the Goverment announced that a CGT exemption will apply to the creation will apply to the creation, variation or termination of a granny flat arrangement that is providing accomodation for older Australians or those with a disability, where there is a formal written agreement in place. This exemption has now become law and commenced 1 July 2021. This change is hoped to help families, who currently avoid creating formal, legally binding agreements because of the potential significant CGT consequence, to start creating agreements to protect all involved. To be eligible for the CGT exemption: • The arrangement accommodation for life • The person entering the arrangement must be pension age or have a specified disability • The parties to the agreement don't need to be related • The arrangement can't be on a commercial basis (eg formal rent agreements). SuperStream for SMSF ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

All BGL clients must use Australia Post as their default gateway as Simple Fund 360 will not integrate with any other gateway provider. If you register with another gateway, you will not be able to use the SuperStream data in Simple Fund 360.

SuperStream is the new standard for super transactions designed to improve the quality of data and improve processing efficiency for both employers and super funds. SuperStream servicea will collect contribution data from employers and distribute this data to SMSF software providers.

Where can I find the Electronic Service Address (ESA)?

As part of this, all trustees of SMSFs must comply with a new data and e-commerce standard. Employers will be able to send superannuation contributions and data to multiple funds in one standard electronic format, instead of sending information to separate funds in multiple formats.

The ESA is available in the Trustee/Employer Notification Letters which can be prepared after you or your accountant has registered the fund for SuperStream.

What is SuperStream?

Once registered, SMSF Trustees will need to provide the following information to their employer:

SuperStream is a government reform designed to enhance the efficiency of the super system. Under SuperStream, employers are required to make super contributions, both data and payment, on behalf of their employees electronically. All super funds, including SMSFs, must receive contribution data and payments electronically in accordance with the SuperStream standard. SuperStream Gateways will collect your contribution data from employers and distribute this data to your SMSF.

The Electronic Service Address (ESA) is required by employers so that they can send contribution data to that address. Each SuperStream Gateway has a unique ESA.

The ESA will also be saved under Fund | Fund Details.

Self Managed Super Fund name, ABN, The Electronic Dervice Address (ESA), BSB and Account Number. An Employer Notification Letter can also be generated in Simple Fund 360. Thankfully, the ATO has confirmed it will not take a hard-line enforcement approach to SMSFs that do not comply with the new SuperStream requirements set to be implemented on 1 October this year even though funds in this predicament will be considered to have committed a regulatory contravention. When speaking to the SMSF Association, the ATO superannuation and employer obligations director, Belinda Black said: “Not complying [with the SuperStream requirements] is a breach of the payment standards and penalties may apply. However, like any new functionality and change, the ATO wants to support those impacted and therefore will allow a transition window for the industry to get up to speed and understand SuperStream.” There are currently several SMSF software providers already compliant with SuperStream. For Trustees of SMSF, it is best to talk to your accountant regarding SuperStream to make sure they, more importantly, you as the Trustee, will be able to meet your obligations after the 1st of October 2021.

Go to ATO website to read more: https://www.ato.gov.au/super/superstream/

At Find Accountant, we provide SMSF tax advice. Our senior accountant is also an award-winning financial advisor. If you require SMSF advice or are considering whether or not to wind up your SMSF, then speak to Warren Strybosch at Find Accountant Pty Ltd.

How To Make Uncertainty Work For You, Your Team AND Your Business. RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe

This new working-from-home norm has many positives! But it’s also becoming a little dull... don’t you think? Sure, it’s easier to get up last minute, set up the way we want and eat as we feel. But is it too comfortable? Comfort may equal ease, but day in day out comfort becomes predictable, and predictability suffocates growth. When you look in the mirror in the morning, how bright is the twinkle in your eyes? Do they shine and sparkle at the thought of what’s happening next? Or do they lay dull in their sockets because it’s ‘the same old thing’ today?

Have you considered that you may be too comfortable?! And this could be spilling over into your leadership style! Another word for comfort is certainty. Some people get addicted to the certainty of things. Get addicted to having control. Predicting results is much easier when you’re in your little bubble of comfort and don’t look beyond. But getting stuck here can unknowingly stifle results – for everyone. Certainty, Control, and Comfort DO NOT inspire creativity, opportunity, and change. There is an overwhelming need for all people, across the globe to fill their lives with certainty right now... simply to balance the enormous level of uncertainty in the outside world. It’s a natural and subconscious response and is commonly happening in the work environment. Perhaps for you it’s in your set-up, your approach or directly shown

in your leadership – are you micromanaging or lacking delegation, avoiding online team meetings with too many variables or avoiding giving feedback? Self-awareness is the key here... and a must in any great leader. When you understand how you respond in different situations you are then able to adjust accordingly to continue to motivate and inspire yourself and those around you. Too much uncertainty, drives a need for certainty. This is a universal response... that is, it applies to everyone (and often without awareness). So, there is a big possibility that you and/ or your team have overcompensated with comfort in your home work space and if so, that spark, that urge to think outside the box, to challenge, to create, will surely be stifled and choking your bottom line results.

AUGUST 2021 | FIND GEELONG

It’s time to encourage greatness, bring back some spark – to you and those around you! Hiding behind the screen cannot be the new norm. Here’s some easy steps that you and your team can follow to stimulate originality and expression, go back to basics, and EMBRACE THE UNCERTAINTY of the new work-from-home life! 1. HAVE A GO! Say Yes and then work out how. The key is to make up your mind quickly and change it slowly. When you say YES, it confirms you’re worth it. You will then back yourself to figure out the rest. This way you’ll consistently discover that you’ve got more to give, and you have yet another level within. 2. TRUST YOUR SENSES Doing this effectively will form a belief within yourself that you can draw on at times of uncertainty - this will carry you through. By believing in yourself and trusting your senses, you’re more likely to give it a go in the areas that you may not think you know so well.

11

3. DO ONE THING EVERY DAY TO GET YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE Could be as simple as speaking to someone you wouldn’t usually, going down a slide at the park (with or without the kids!), go bare foot on a trail walk.

Commit to building a resilient team that promotes individual greatness yet moves seamlessly together as one... this is where the magic happens... get in touch if you’re keen to know more on how.

4. DO THE LESS PREDICTABLE THING Not to shock others, but to surprise yourself. This will build your inner trust.

If you’re looking to build a resilient culture in your business and would like support around this, reach out for a chat

5. CHOOSE A MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND LOOSEN UP – You’ve got this!! Think... “I have no idea how to do this, yet I’m going to have a good ole crack at it and work out where I suck”. Through striving forward and giving it a go, we discover where we struggle and where the gaps are for us to move forward. “Fantastic, I now know what I have to learn and where to progress” With a deeper understanding of how you work, what makes you tick and why you do the things that you do – both individually and as a team – you’re able to hone in and create a tailored work environment that’s inspiring and fun, innovative, motivating, and productive.

How Does The Probate Process Work? LAWYERS By John Van Beveren

A loved one’s legacy, like their life, is very important to protect. Therefore, it is critical to ensure what they leave behind is distributed and carried out according to their wishes. What is Probate? Probate is a step that allows a representative person (also known as an executor or administrator), to take control of a person’s estate and distribute it to the intended beneficiaries after they passed away. A “Grant of Probate” from the Supreme Court of Victoria gives a person authority to deal with the assets of a deceased, such as bank accounts, shares and property, so that they can deal with them according to their loved one’s wishes that is written in their Will.

What do I need to do if I am an executor? Once you apply for a grant of probate, some of your roles will include: •

Contacting the beneficiaries in the Will, including anyone interstate or overseas

Protecting the person’s assets -this might include taking out insurance

Providing death notifications to Centrelink, banks, and other authorities

File a death taxation return or notify the Australian Taxation Office that a tax return is not necessary. Any outstanding tax return need to be lodged (otherwise you run the risk of being personally liable for any outstanding tax as the executor).

Pay any outstanding bills and debts from the estate funds

Defend the estate against any legal action

Transfer the assets, including any properties owned by the deceased, according to the Will.

How to apply for Probate? The court will need to issue a formal legal document confirming that the Will is valid. The Court also decides if the Will was the last Will that the deceased made and confirms that there are no objections to the Will being valid. The Court will need proof that the executor listed in the Will is alive and willing and able to complete the wishes written a person’s Will. The Court will confirm the appointment of the executor and them authority to administer the estate of a person who has died. If awarded this is known as a “grant of probate.” What if there is no Will? When a person dies without a Will, it means they did not appoint an executor to administer the estate. In these cases, the closest next of kin can apply for “Letters of Administration” to legally authorise them control to distribute the deceased’s assets. If there is a particular person you trust and want to take care of your affairs after your passing, we strongly encourage you to ensure you have a valid Will in place so there is a clear and trustworthy executor that the Court can give legal authority to handle your affairs as per your wishes.

Does the size of probate matter? A probate may only be required if the monetary amount of the deceased’s asset is above a certain amount. For smaller amounts, other documents, such as a copy of the death certificate and the deceased person’s Will, may be enough for a financial institution to release the money. Each financial institution is likely to have its own policy regarding deceased estates. For example, if there is money in a bank account and the deceased was the sole account holder, the financial institution may ask for a grant of probate or letters of administration before releasing the funds to the executor. Similarly, if the deceased person held many shares, the company may require a grant of probate before they will release the shares. Is Capital Gains Tax applicable to deceased estate?

the deceased within a set period. However, it may apply if you later dispose of the asset to someone else. You are exempted from CGT on disposal of an inherited dwelling if you dispose of it within two years of the person’s death. CGT will apply if the asset is transferred under the Will to a tax-advantaged entity (such as a charity or superannuation funds), or to a foreign resident regardless when it is being transferred. If the deceased had any unapplied net capital losses when they died these do not transfer to you as a beneficiary or legal personal representative. This means you can’t use any such losses to offset against any net capital gains. What are the key things to consider when running a business? Sole traders: If you are a sole trader, estate planning is a simple exercise where you can pass the assets to your chosen beneficiaries through your Will. In some situations where successors have no interest in running the business, you should then address how the business should be sold. Partnerships: In a partnership, it’s advisable to have a legally enforceable Partnership Agreement that outlines what happens in the event of a partner’s death. This makes it easier for the other partners to buy out the share. The proceeds of the sale are then distributed to the deceased partner’s beneficiaries according to their Will. Alternatively, the Partnership Agreement may simply pass on the deceased partner’s share of the business to his or her successors. In the absence of the agreement, then the Partnership Act will then take effect. Companies: If you run a company, it will be important to have a Shareholders’ Agreement to determine what happens to the ownership of the company in the event of your death. A shareholders’ agreement can deal with situations where the other directors or shareholders wish to buy your share, as well as how voting rights will work and how the dividends and capital works be distributed.

If you are a beneficiary or legal personal representative, you acquire the asset on the day the person died.

You can also pass your shares to your intended beneficiaries through your Will (but not the assets of the business, such as a property, which are owned by the company).

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) does not apply when a beneficiary acquires the asset from

to protect your assets according to your intentions. It also helps your loved ones navigate the probate process to ensure your asset pass according to your wishes. Why use a testamentary trust? Testamentary trusts are created by a Will to provide a greater level of control and protection over the asset when they are distributed to the beneficiaries. The overriding objective for all Testators in this kind of trust is to ensure that each beneficiary’s inheritance is protected and preserved from waste and dissipation by the beneficiary. It also protects the person against claims on the beneficiary’s assets due to any marital or commercial breakdown.

Other special benefits of testamentary trusts are the reduction in tax needed to be paid by beneficiaries from any income earned from the inheritance. This is useful where the beneficiary has a high personal tax rate, have a partner on a lower income, or have any minor children and grandchildren. Trustees need to obtain specific advice regarding taxes payable for a testamentary trust, particularly where assets are held in trust for more than three years.

Feature Walls For The Wow Factor PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof

Do you want your house to wow people as they walk in? A feature wall can be an exciting opportunity to express your creativity and stamp a sense of who you are onto your living spaces. As a painter with decades of experience, people often ask me for advice on which wall to feature, and how. I’m more than happy to help! Here are my top tips to make your house feel unique and welcoming.

Which wall to choose You want to place the feature wall where a person’s eye is naturally drawn. By featuring the wall that draws your eye, you add an illusion of spaciousness. As you walk to your room, notice where you look. If it’s a bedroom, feature the wall behind the bed head. If it’s a dining room, you want the wall behind the dining table to stand out. In your living room, choose the wall behind your TV, or behind your couch, depending on which wall you first see as you enter.

What colours to choose The colour of your feature wall should match the look and feel of your house. Consider, too, whether you will be planning to sell the home again before the next repaint. Generally, if your house is neutral colours, you should stick to neutral tones. Take into account the amount of daylight that comes in. If the room has big windows, a pastel wall is going to look best in the day, because the contrast between a dark wall and the rest of the room will look too harsh. If the room is naturally darker, then adding a rich colour can add a touch of drama, mystique, and majesty. What materials to use The materials you use depends on your budget. You can create a jaw-dropping feature wall just with paint and the right decore. If you have more resources available for your project, then stone, tiles or luxury wallpaper will give your house that air of opulence which will be the talk of your next dinner party for years to come. If in doubt, consult an interior designer, or talk with me when you book your free consultation and quote.

What’s a feature wall? A feature wall is a wall that stands out compared to the other walls in a room. It can be done with paint, or wallpaper, and also with textures like reclaimed wood or tiles. Selecting your room Any room in the house can have a feature wall, so long as the room isn’t too cosy. Sometimes small rooms can have a feature wall (like a bathroom) but consistency helps to create a feeling of space in small spaces.

Getting in front of that camera lens is one of the most terrifying things any of us could possibly do in this day and age. Seeing how the world views you through a camera lens can be quite confronting if you don’t film and watch yourself often. From Surviving To Thriving In An Age Of Lockdowns Let’s break down how it works. 1. Customers use the distributor’s commerce webpage to browse, purchase and pay for an item. 2. The distributor then acknowledges payment and proceeds to pick, pack and place the order in a dispatch location for customer pickup in a timely manner. 3. Customer is then notified that their order is ready for pickup and travels to the pickup location and receives the goods.

WEB DEVELOPER By Adam Sims

Since “two weeks to flatten the curve” has become many months of rolling lockdowns and compounded by uncertainty around if bureaucrats will lose their powers to impose lockdowns or not, many small businesses have important decisions to make. For those who have been brave enough to take up the challenge of surviving in this new and rapidly changing world and want their businesses to continue to survive long enough to provide for themselves, communities and the families, rolling with the punches thrown by our goliath of a state bureaucracy is a must. This article includes a handful of tips and tricks to help leaders and decision makers amend their operations and use their webpage to do just that. Click and collect If you have purchased something from a large distributor or retailer during lockdown, you would have come across the option to purchase via “click and collect”. Despite appearances, “Click and collect” is not a new approach invented during lockdown; many businesses have been providing this service for some time and was formerly known as “in-store pickup” or “local pickup”. That said, this practice’s prominence has certainly grown and is now top of mind and sought after by many buyers as a consequence of the restrictive circumstances we find ourselves in.

There are a range of online collaboration tools, some of which have no monetary cost, such as the Google Apps Suite, which provides instant messaging, spreadsheets, word processing, and more with the added benefit of allowing more than one user to edit them, while being able to observe each other’s changes in real time. It’s never been easier to collaborate online, so with a little know how and patience, businesses can take advantage of these tools.

Contactless delivery

The biggest challenge businesses face when implementing a virtual office is the loss of being able to engineer and design a productive working environment. This responsibility is deferred to staff and depends on how conducive their at home working space is to being productive. As tempting as it is to dive into this subject here in this article, I wouldn’t be able to give it justice in the small amount of remaining space, so stay tuned and we may cover this topic in future articles.

As the name suggests “contactless delivery” is an order to fulfillment process that allows businesses and customers to trade without making in-person contact with each other. This gives anxious customers assurance that they won’t come in face to face contact with a person that may make them ill.

In closing, I hope you found this article helpful and demystifies some of the buzzwords floating around at the moment. Wish you best of luck and looking forward to seeing your business go from surviving to thriving on the other side of the next lockdown.

4. The purchase is now fulfilled and the click and collect workflow is complete. If you run a product based or remote service business, there is really no reason you shouldn’t be taking steps to implement Click and Collect as one of your businesses standard workflows today

You may have guessed already that for most businesses “contactless delivery” is very similar to “Click and collect” with the addition of assuring that the customer doesn’t make in-person contact with staff or other customers. This can be achieved by having a pickup location that may or may not be monitored by camera, where the customer can come alone, one at a time, to pick up the goods. Again, nothing overly complex here. This process is accessible to any business that may have customers who would see this as a benefit. Virtual Office This is a fancy term for working remotely and contacting staff and customers via the telephone or tools available through the internet.

Our Focus Shapes Our Thoughts, Emotions And Actions! Where Is Your Focus?

Are you aware of your focus?

Just think about it this way. When we want to search a topic, we type a key word or two into google. Google then provides us with all relevant information about that topic. Those key words are the same as our focus. What we focus on, surrounds us, to the exclusion of everything else. It is what we see, hear, feel, and tell ourselves, and influences what happens next – our actions and responses.

What do you spend most of your time thinking about, talking about, and doing?

Did you know we can choose what our predominant focus is?

There are some people that are tuned into their thoughts and can reflect on where their focus is and has been. But, for most of us we don’t stop for long enough to notice what our predominant thoughts are, let alone reflect on them. We tend to just live our lives day by day without really taking a moment to check in with ourselves. When we live like we are on autopilot, we are not as tuned in to what is really happening in our lives, and we often don’t take the time to evaluate if we are getting the results we want.

We can focus on positive things or negative things. We can see ourselves as creating our reality or being the victim of it. We can make resourceful decisions or unresourceful decisions. We can believe we have choice or that we have no choice. We can view our world as abundant or small.

LIFE COACH & COUNSELLOR By Lou Lugsdin

Our focus determines what we think, how we feel and what happens on a day-today basis.

What we focus on in our lives determines our happiness, our results, our success, the quality of our relationships and the amount of fulfilment we will experience. So, our focus is important!

We can have fulfilling relationships or dramatic ones. We can view our life as rewarding, interesting and positive or see it as dull, unstimulating, and negative. The quality of our thoughts, that is what we choose to focus on and spend time thinking about, determines the quality of our life. Good quality, positive, and proactive thoughts encourage good quality, positive and proactive results. Similarly, poor quality, negative and unresourceful thoughts encourage poor quality, negative and un-resourceful results. If you were able to verbalise your current focus, what key words would you use? If you were to draw a picture that displayed your focus, what would your picture be of? If you had a flashlight shining on your focus, what would you see?

The good news is – we can change our focus at any time – if we need to.

So, what does the word FOCUS mean you may ask? Our focus is what we take notice of and concentrate on. It’s what we think about, tell ourselves, perceive, and believe to be true. It is what consumes our thinking. It also includes our beliefs, values, experiences, attitudes, and experiences.

Increase in the Demand for Fixed Interest Rates

FINANCE BROKER By Allan Houliston

Recent finance industry analysis has shown that more borrowers are taking advantage of the record low interest rates and securing fixed rates products and that these numbers are trending upwards when compared to the same time last year. This demand has potentially climbed over recent months as some lenders have been increasing their fixed rates due to higher funding costs for longerdated loans and the need to manage pricing changes sustainably. This in turn has caused a ripple effect in the market, where borrowers fear that they may have ‘missed the boat’ in regards to locking in their ideal rate but are still searching the market in order to lock in the next best thing. The Reserve Bank of Australia has insisted that it won’t raise interest rates until at least 2024 which bodes well for the Australian property market in general. However, several of Australia’s top economists are tipping that the RBA will lift the cash rate in the March quarter of 2023, despite of a predicted slowing in the housing market in 2022. Economists at CBA have even predicted that this first rate rise in the official cash rate will take place as early as November 2022. The RBA have however stated that prior to any future rate rises, that the bank will need to achieve its full employment and inflation objectives first.

Another reason which could account for the significant rise in fixed rate home loans is due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which unfortunately has been part of the Australian way of life since early 2020. In times of uncertainty, consumers look to things that they can control and that give them certainty. By securing a competitive interest rate on their largest household expense, it can give borrowers peace of mind for a specific period of time. When considering a fixed rate product, it’s worth considering the following factors. Lenders fixed interest rates will potentially differ for owner-occupied products verse investment loan products. Several lenders will also price their fixed rate products based on risk, e.g., a loan that represents 60% of the property value could attract a lower interest rate than a loan that represents 80% of the property value. Lastly some lenders may be particularly competitive over a specific fixed term but not so competitive over other fixed terms, e.g., market leading for their 3-year fixed term but average for their 4-year fixed term home loan. It therefore pays to speak to a broker who can offer a suitable product from a ‘whole of market’ perspective. It is also advisable to speak to your current lender first to see what they can offer, and the costs associated with changing products. There are always costs associated with moving your borrowing to a new lende

r but in the current competitive market, several lenders are offering cashback incentives post settlement ranging between $1500-$4000, which can assist in covering part or all of these costs. Borrowers can still secure a 3-year fixed rate home loan under 2% and there are 4 year-fixed rate home loans in the current market starting at 2.14%. Even if you decide to stay on the same deal and with the same lender, my advice is that you review your lending at least every three years. This will ensure that the rate and product that you have is still competitive and the most suitable for you based on your personal circumstances and the current market conditions at that time.

Installing A Shed Roller Door GARAGE DOORS By Chantal Djuric

There is much advice on the internet on how to install your own shed roller door. If you are thinking of installing one yourself, read on. This is a summary of what we do at Cruzin. We begin by measuring the width of the roller door against where it will be installed as the roller door curtain needs to be 100 mm wider than the opening. There has to be enough room on the side and the correct space between the wall bracket and the edge of the door curtain. After measuring accurately where the brackets will be fixed, we attach them with the appropriate equipment, depending on whether they are being fixed to brick, masonry, concrete or steel sheeting. This is not a job for the shed owner as working at heights is an OH&S issue that we take seriously. Is the chain operator a planetary geared one, a direct drive one or an electric one? Each one has specific instructions on how to be attached. This is fiddly and fraught with the potential to make mistakes. Only a trained garage door specialist will have the requisite expertise to assemble and attach it properly. Now we lift the roller door onto the brackets and loosely secure the axle to them. We never use the wall brackets to mount the door lifting gear as they are only

designed to support the door. Remember, roller doors can weigh up to 200 kg, around twice the weight of most adult males. The door is now centred within the opening with the same amount of curtain overlap on each side. If the operator is an electric one, we position it as required at the same time. We remove strapping and packaging material, without cutting the centre nylon strap, and move the door to the rear of the bracket slots, turning the axle so the door is relaxed on the axle with the bottom rail at the bottom of the curtain. Without letting go of the curtain, we now cut the centre strap. Holding the centre of the bottom rail, we open and close the curtain to ensure it is correctly aligned on the roll before fitting the guide tracks. As you can see, attaching the door precisely with the correct amount of tension is a tricky process that should be done by an expert. Then we cut the bottom off the tracks so that the top stop is level with the top of the opening. Next, we slide the tracks onto the edge of the roller door, ensuring the top stops remain above the bottom rail to prevent the door rolling further upwards. Then we lower the door to the closed position, push the track against the wall and adjust sideways so there is a a 3–6 mm gap between the inside of the track and the black plastic button at the end of the bottom rail. Using a builder’s level, we make sure the tracks are vertical before screwing or welding them to the walls with appropriate fasteners.

With the door in the open position, we loosen the two-axle clamp bolts and, using the slots in the wall brackets, move the door in towards the wall until almost touching the track front face and retighten the bolts. We adjust the operators, position the shute bolts at the ends of the bottom rail, mark the mounting bolt hole positions and drill so that the square shank of the domed headed coach screw will bite into the hole and not turn. With the domed screw heads on the outside of the door, and the door in the fully closed position, we mark and cut a hole in the side face of each track for the locking bolt to slide through. The final part of the process is to remove the outer protective film from the curtain door surface – and that’s it! If you think this sounds complicated, you’re right! Too many things can go wrong. Aside from damaging the door, its components and your garage, you could suffer a severe injury. Our advice is – leave it to the experts!

The retirement income covenant (RIC) proposed by the federal government in 2018, that was meant to be in force in 2020, and now looks to come into effect on 1 st July 2022, will require all superannuation funds, including SMSFs, to have a documented strategy to identify the retirement income needs of fund members and provide a plan to service those needs.

It is likely to lead to a greater variety of products being made available after the covenant comes into play. Dr Deborah Ralston, who sat on the Retirement Income Review, said: “I can see in a decade how superannuation funds will have a portfolio of products sitting on their platforms for retirees to help them through that phase of life.”

When the position paper was first released, the Digital Economic Minister, Jane Hume, said: “The introduction of the retirement income covenant is an important step in encouraging the further development of the retirement phase of superannuation.”

However, it is our belief that many products will come and go, and retirees will find it hard to move away from the products they are so familiar with e.g. allocated pensions with access to a variety of investment options, and lifetime income streams or annuities providing a guaranteed income stream.

“The covenant will codify the requirements and obligations for superannuation trustees to improve retirement outcomes for individuals, while enabling choice and competition in the retirement phase.” Sally Evans, director at Allianz Retire Plus, when discussing the proposal, said: “The covenant is essential because our industry is so heavily weighted to the accumulation phase of retirement. A covenant will help us focus on the purpose of superannuation and what is the right way for individuals to smooth their income to last a lifetime”. Currently, retirees are unwilling to draw down their capital in retirement for fear of running out of money. Allianz Retire Plus surveyed many retirees, and 61% were fearful of running out of money more than they were worried about dying. “People don’t know how long they will live, how long they will work or what their health status will be. Those uncertainties play out in fear and a lack of confidence. That creates an enormous challenge for people to overcome,” said Evans. A key finding of the Retirement Income Review, which has led to the RIC, is that they believe it is possible for retirees to increase their standard of living by better utilising their assets in retirement.

What we are sure of is the additional cost this will place on SMSF Trustees, who will be required to provide an Investment Strategy that meets these new requirements related to the RIC. The paper states: “Trustees are required to formulate, review regularly, and give effect to a retirement income strategy for the retired members of their fund, and the members of their fund approaching retirement. The strategy can be formulated for all members in generality, or cohorts of members in generality, as identified by the trustee.” Already we have seen auditors requesting more details regarding the investment strategy. Given most accountants cannot develop an investment strategy, trustees have had to engage financial planners to prepare the investment strategy which has placed increased costs on the SMSF members. When the RIC comes into play, auditors will be scrutinizing the investment strategy even more to make sure it meets the RIC requirements. Our opinion is that modelling will have to form the basis of each investment strategy so that trustees can demonstrate how the investments will give effect to member’s retirement.

Interestingly, according to the paper, the development of the retirement income strategy would not fall under the provision of giving financial advice to members. The paper states that “the retirement income strategy expresses the broad actions the trustee will take to assist their members to balance key retirement income objectives and does not consider the specific circumstances of individual members.” However, given the retirement income strategy will need to take into consideration the members’ balance, future goals, risk profile, age or retirement and so on, it is more likely the development of the RIC will require input from financial planners. The paper is open for consultation until 6 August and further consultation on exposure draft legislation will take place later this year. Subject to the passage of legislation, the covenant will commence from 1 July 2022. All in all, SMSF trustees can expect the ongoing costs of managing a SMSF to rise. An Introduction To Our 3rd Generation Family Business EMBROIDERY SPECIALIST By Kerry Kaspi

Back in 1985 my parents, Adrian & Jan Summers, holidayed in sunny Queensland when they spotted an embroidery machine for sale. Always being in business they had an eye for new opportunities and this time was no exception. They ended up coming home with the single head embroidery machine. Setting up a store in the newly opened Market Square with the single header, it was the first to be seen in the region. People would stand at the window to watch it sew out various designs and names all day long. They just loved watching this machine works its magic all the way to the finished product. Fast forward 10 years and we have large quantities of work from some of Australia’s largest workwear companies such as Can’t Tear‘em and Hard Yakka. From the one single-head machine we worked our way up to five eight-head machines with 22 staff and worked like this for another 15 years. During this time I acquired the business from my parents. The machines back then were nowhere near as advanced as today, over the years we had to move with the everexpanding technology available in this

business and as the large workwear companies moved overseas to a more cost-efficient country to operate in, we lost 85% of our income and had to scale down immensely leaving us to struggle to keep busy. After working hard on improving our marketing and hiring reps to go out on the road to bring in business from all over we slowly began to build the company to what it is today. By showing customers how important experience is in this business we were able to bring in new customers from various walks of life who could see our expertise in operating for so long, they loved their final product and we built our business again, from this stand point. In the last 10 years both my children have started working here with my youngest, Julian, expressing great interest in learning the ropes. During this short time, he has added great value to the business showing what fresh eyes can do to change things for the better. Now we are on a steady path to growing bigger and expanding our team constantly. The road in business has been both challenging and exciting, I’ve been surprised by people and proud of people.

But one of the things I’ve been most proud of is accepting all the challenges that has been thrown at us, never giving up, knowing who and what we have become and being strong in the belief that we can get through any challenging times. But in the end nothing would make me prouder than to continue this business to the 4th or 5th generation.

“From small startup clothing brands to companies as big as Cotton On and Yakka we’ve worked with them all and helped add value to products for over 35 years.”

Tips For Insuring A Shopfront Well Covered (Steadfast)

When you’re ready to push your home business from the nest and into a shopfront, it’s an exciting time. It can also expose you to a whole new world of risk that could cripple your fledgling business before it can soar. Running a business from home is one thing, but taking the leap to a shopfront is altogether another. Fortunately, as millions before you have proven, it can be done. But not only does it require planning, budgeting and a solid understanding of the risks you’ll face, it also requires you to take out the right insurance, says John Clark, Steadfast’s Broker Support Manager.

“If you have a computer that has your records on it and they’re not backed up properly, then you’re risking interruption to your ‘from home’ business that you can’t easily deal with” 1. Theft First cab off the rank is ensuring you have adequate security measures in place to protect the equipment, stock and cash within your new premises.

Depending on what’s most suitable for your business, that could include a safe, bars on windows, a security guard or advanced alarm systems. It’s also worth considering insurance against theft and property damage. “What happens in most burglaries is that, not only do they come in and take stuff, but they damage things” Clark says. 2. Fire No one wants to see their dreams go up in smoke. Not only do you need to identify fire risks within your business, such as electric radiators, but you should install fire extinguishers and smoke alarms. Speak to an experienced broker about appropriate insurance and backup all your business documents and files offsite. If you have a computer that has your records on it and they’re not backed up properly, then you’re risking interruption to your ‘from home’ business that you can’t easily deal with” says Clark. 3. Public liability Let’s say someone strolls into your store and trips over something you’ve accidentally left on the floor, injuring themselves badly in the process.

“She’s on a big income so she sues you for $200,000. What do you do then? You’d need Public Liability insurance” says Clark. “All those exposures should be fleshed out when you talk to a broker, and an appropriate insurance solution found. 4. Business interruption insurance Whether it’s a roof-raising storm, a wallshattering earthquake or a car through your shop window, it’s important to help protect your business against things that can suddenly and unpredictably bring your income stream to a halt. “If you’re an owner/operator or a single tradie, how would you pay your expenses – the rent, the wages, the electricity – without an income?” he asks. “That’s why you need Business Interruption Insurance. 5. Ask an expert While you can always take steps to mitigate against worst case scenarios, the fundamental risk mitigation strategy is to have an expert review your insurance and ensure it is appropriate. “That helps transfer the risk from you to the insurance company” Clark says “and underscores the importance of seeking the advice of an experienced broker Important notice – Steadfast Group Limited ABN 98 073 659 677 and Steadfast Network Brokers This article provides information rather than financial product or other advice. AX UPDATES Unpaid present entitlements and extension of repayments Unpaid present entitlements (UPE) to private companies initially under an interest-only loan may be extended on final repayment date. The practical compliance guideline deals with a UPE that was put in an investment deal in accordance with PS LA 2010/4. If there is a balance to be repaid at the end of the investment period, it may become a new Div 7A loan. 30 June 2018 is the first year in which an interest-only loan at benchmark rates is due to be repaid after the issuing of PS LA 2010/4. That is, 7 years after the initial UPE was put on a sub-trust from the 30 June 2010 year.

Announcement(19-Jul-2017) Consultation period(19-Jul-2017) Released(19-Jul-2017)

The PCG has recently been updated to relate to arrangements ending in the 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 or 2021 income years. Family groups using this strategy may benefit from utilising this extension of time to repay the initial unpaid present entitlement from the 2009-10 income year.

Phillipa Challis OAM

The Geelong Region Cancerians was formed in response to the desire of our Founder Phillipa Challis OAM to give back to the community after becoming a uterine cancer survivor in 2017. Her aim to raise awareness of cancer detection while raising funds that support research for uterine and all other cancers became the vision of the Geelong Region Cancerians. Her aim also included the education and dissemination of information about the warning signs of uterine cancer. Each year about 2700 Australian women are diagnosed with uterine cancer, also known as cancer of the womb. The majority of these women are over 50. In Australia it is the fifth most common cancer diagnosed in women and also the most commonly diagnosed gynecological cancer. One in 60 women is likely to be diagnosed with uterine cancer by the age of 75. The five-year survival rate for uterine cancer is 83%. The Geelong Region Cancerians was launched in April 2018. The small devoted committee organised a selection of fundraising events during 2018 and 2019 which resulted in donations totalling $33,000 to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). Under difficult circumstances during 2020 caused by the COVID19 Pandemic restrictions $16,000 was added, bringing the total $49,000. The ACRF, a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, was selected as the organisation that would receive the results of our fundraising efforts. It is the only charity in Australia dedicated to ending all forms of cancer by exclusively funding cutting-edge technologies, state-of-theart equipment and facilities that researchers and clinical teams need to fast-track discoveries and new treatments. Geelong Region Cancerians in partnership with Geelong Regional Library Corporation are pleased to present a discussion panel themed “Strength and Positivity when Facing Cancer” at an information evening on Monday 6 September 2021. An inspiring panel of speakers will share their personal experience and expertise when facing cancer. The event is to be held at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre, free to all however bookings are essential due to space limitations. Book online at https://events.grlc.vic.gov.au/ event/5420545 We invite all to go to www.geelongregioncancerians.com.au and register your support to share our vision in the knowledge that the achievements of the Geelong Region Cancerians will be immeasurable for those in Geelong and the wider community having to deal with uterine and all other cancers. The Geelong Region Cancerians committee welcome enquiries from people interested in joining and become involved and contribute to our aims of educating and fund raising towards cures. Managing Screen Time The overuse of phones, gaming, iPads, computers and televisions is an increasing problem for many children and adults. I recently watched ‘The Social Dilemma’, a documentary/film which depicts some of the issues surrounding social networking and the methodology behind the various mediums. It reveals some of the dangers and influence these networks have and how much they know about us. A number of parents have shared with me the difficulties in getting children off their devices, the addictive nature of many of the games (they’re designed that way) and the conflict that often ensues when managing it all. Here’s a few suggestions that may help in dealing with this difficult area. The suggestions may need modifying depending on children’s ages, differences and your family situations. Some serious planning and thought may be necessary to overcome bad habits. • • • • • • •

• • • •

Try and stay as positive and controlled as possible throughout the process, without condemning the use of these devices Limits need to be put in place for children eg. a set time for after school and non-school days It is empowering for children to be involved in the decision making process – have an open discussion, asking what they think is appropriate, try their suggestions as an experiment A chart keeping a record of right behaviour with their devices culminating in a small prize can be a very helpful incentive Devices should be out of bounds at bed time – encourage other activities – see below It’s often helpful to give children a few minutes warning, preparing them for the end of a time limit Try and stay as connected as possible with your child’s games and activities, play the game with them sometimes – encourage them to use their devices in the family area as opposed to alone in their room Our modelling as parents/carers of how we behave around our devices is more powerful than we might realise – are we setting a good example with phones, games, TV etc? Alternative activities may be the best strategy eg playing a board or card game with your child or as a family, develop a family project, go for trips, outings, begin a family night etc. Eat dinner together as a family around the table with the TV off, phones away – try and develop this as a time when each person shares something about their day Ultimately and as a last resort, if devices aren’t used appropriately, they should be taken away from children for a set time – an achievable well thought through consequence

Good luck with this. I firmly believe it’s worth the effort to manage these things. Don’t forget, you’re the parent and you may need to be unpopular for a time to ensure your child is safe and well. Kindest regards, Rob. Chaplain LPS. Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.au

Victoria State Emergency Service Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) is the control agency for flood, storm, tsunami and earthquake in Victoria, managing responses to these emergencies and helping communities to prepare through planning and education. VICSES also operates the largest road crash rescue response network in the state and also provides a support role to other emergency service agencies. VICSES Bellarine Unit The VICSES Bellarine Unit is one of 24 units located in the South West region and is made up entirely of volunteers. It is supported by professional staff both from state headquarters and the South West regional office. The units LHQ (local headquarters) is located on Grubb Road on the outskirts of Drysdale and its members reside in all corners of the peninsula. The response area for the unit covers the entire Bellarine Peninsula and includes the towns of Clifton Springs, Curlewis, Drysdale, Indented Head, Leopold, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff, St Leonards, Wallington and all areas in between. In addition, our members may be deployed to other regions of the state to assist with large-scale operations such as major storms, floods or fires. We have even had members from our unit deployed across Australia to assist our interstate counterparts. VICSES Bellarine Unit typically receives over 200 requests for assistance each year and we rely upon local volunteers to help in both operational and support roles. Volunteers from VICSES Bellarine Unit come from all walks of life, all backgrounds and all professions. In fact, the main thing we have in common is a desire to make a contribution within our community.

“Each year we normally hold a tin rattle to raise much needed funds, however as with many other activities, we have been unable to do so, and don’t expect we will be able to in the near future. We have a number of Unit Vehicles that are due for replacement in the short term, and need to start planning for it now to ensure we have the necessary monies to be able to do so. Given that we have been unable to have our annual tin rattle during these times, we are looking for support in a different way. We have partnered with a Not-for-Profit organization that specializes in assisting organizations like ours with online donations. The Unit would be humbled for any support that the community that we live in would be able to give us, so that we can be there for you, in your time of need. Please head over to our Give Now page, and donate to a cause that directly supports your local community. All donations over $2 are Tax Deductible”.

Plan targets net zero emissions by 2035 A municipal-wide target of zero net emissions by 2035 is a key feature of the City’s Draft Climate Change Response Plan.

With a total of 80 actions, the draft plan is a roadmap for collaborative action, outlining how the Council can support an empowered community response.

The draft plan, which will guide the City’s corporate response and the community’s response to climate change issues and impacts, was endorsed for release by Council last night.

Councillor Belinda Moloney, Chair of the Climate Change Action portfolio, said climate change threatens every aspect of our lives.

The key target is supported by an action plan that addresses priority areas of community support, energy, transport, waste and climate resilience. It lists a number of principles that would see the region become a zero- emission, climate ready city, including: •

A coordinated and collective response from the whole community;

Supporting an empowered active community;

Increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy production; and

Switching to sustainable transport and cleaner fuels.

and

“After heavy campaigning by constituents and protests around the world, I am glad that Council is taking action on what is a dire emergency situation of life-or-death consequences,” Cr Moloney said. “Sustainable caretaking of our environment must be placed at the forefront of our decision-making, not because it is on trend or winning votes. “Council and councillors have a duty of care to educate ourselves and our community as to how to correct our actions and do our part to avoid widescale catastrophic climate-related events.” The draft plan notes the City successfully exceeded its last corporate emission reduction target of 50 per cent by 2020 and was well placed to assist community efforts.

Emissions have been falling for the past five years, following investments in renewable energy, capturing and using methane from landfill and major building efficiency improvements. Notable projects include the installation of more than one megawatt (MW) of solar PV across 27 Council facilities. All of Greater Geelong’s 25,000-plus street lights are being converted to LED luminaires, while Council is also procuring zero-emissions electricity for all operations over the next decade, as part of the Victorian Energy Collaboration Project. The Draft Climate Change Response Plan has benefited from extensive public consultation, with community groups, business and peak body groups, government agencies and nongovernment organisations all providing input. Council has released the Draft Climate Change Response Plan for further stakeholder and community consultation for 30 days.

White Night Geelong 2021 Geelong will shine bright when White Night returns this year, giving locals and businesses a boost as major events return to the calendar in 2021. White Night Geelong will this year take place on 6 November, after the colourful spectacle made its debut in 2018. Colourful projections and installations will bring the city’s streets, laneways and parks to life, and also transform the Geelong foreshore. An expression of interest is now open to artists in the categories of installation, visual art, lighting, audio-visual, projection, film, music and performance exploring the theme ‘everything on the land is reflected in the sky’. The 2021 program will embrace the global spirit of White Night as a vibrant and inclusive celebration of community participation through immersive art installations in city spaces.

The city will be transformed through stunning illumination and projection, music, performance, art, culinary experiences, and interactive works from local, national, and international artists. The program will capitalise on what makes Geelong unique and elevate the city’s cultural and gastronomic credentials, as well as its reputation for design and rich music scene. Supported by the state’s primary tourism and events body, Visit Victoria, White Night 2021 is led by internationally acclaimed artist Joseph O’Farrell (JOF) who will lead the charge as creative director. White Night Geelong 2018 attracted 70,000 attendees and delivered an economic impact of $6.1 million to the region. The return of White Night Geelong in 2021 will provide more good news for local businesses and showcase local talent and produce as visitors converge on the city and give local tourism operators a boost.

Geelong Ferris Wheel A trip to the Geelong Waterfront isn’t complete without a ride on the Giant Sky Wheel. Offering spectacular views of the Geelong beachfront and Corio Bay, the Ferris Wheel is the largest in the southern hemisphere. At night it lights up in a kaleidoscope of colour with over 24 dazzling light patterns – a Geelong must-see. The Sky Wheel visits Geelong for six months of the year (Oct-March). You’ll find it perched beside the Geelong Yacht Club. Rides last between 7-10 minutes.

Royal Geelong Yacht Club The Royal Geelong Yacht Club is one of Australia’s leading yacht clubs with an impressive history that goes back more than 160 years. Playing host to many major yachting events the club plays an important role in attracting visitors from around the country and across the globe. Two of the most popular events are the biennial Wooden Boat Festival Of Geelong, and the Festival Of Sails the largest keelboat regatta in the southern hemisphere. Tucked in behind the club is the Marina View Cafe offering lovely views of the moored yachts. The food here is simple and the service can be slow, but if you’re not in a hurry it’s a lovely spot for a relaxed coffee and sweet treat. AUGUST 2021 | FIND GEELONG

5. Lounge in snuggly sleepwear

7 winter essentials to get your home cosy for the chilly season Winter is here! To keep your home as snug and warm as possible while you’re lounging around indoors, it’s time to dust off your portable heaters, get the electric blankets out of storage and check off these winter essentials to beat the cold this chilly season. How many cosy weather essentials do you already have from this list, and which ones are you missing? Read on to find out.

3. Rug up in style

Let’s be honest – winter is all about plush robes, fluffy slippers and flannelette pyjamas! Stay cosy and cute in the softest sleepwear, and for colder nights, wrap yourself up in plush fleece bathrobes to keep snug. To finish off the ultimate winter ensemble, slip into a pair of slippers and prepare to take comfort to the next level. Shop for your favourites at Peter Alexander, Country Road, Cotton On Body, Bras N Things, Target or Myer.

If you don’t have carpeted floors, combat cold tiles and wooden floors with a statement rug from Big W, Bed Bath N’ Table or Target. They work wonders in any room, providing warmth underfoot whilst amping up the aesthetic, too.

1. Turn up the heat Perfect for keeping small spaces like studies and bathrooms toasty, a portable heater is one of winter’s must-have luxuries. Plus, you’ll save on your electricity bill by heating only the room you’re in. Check out the range at Myer, Big W or Target to find the best option for your home.

6. Get techy with more heated gadgets

4. Hibernate in your own haven

2. Create the ultimate cosy nook There’s no better feeling than curling up on the couch with a hot chocolate during freezing winter nights. Style your living room and bedrooms with faux fur throws, tassel embellished blankets and a scattering of velvet cushions from Bed Bath N’ Table, Myer or Target for an extra cosy touch.

Transform your bedroom into a cocoon of cosy textures! Go back to basics by adding a heated mattress topper – it’s a total game changer. Next, switch your summer linen for a set of flannelette sheets. Top it all off with a weighted blanket or shearling throw, and your winter retreat is ready. Country Road, Bed Bath N’ Table, Myer, Big W and Target have everything you need to transition your bedroom. Bonus tip: a hot water bottle will keep you toasty all winter long - Nanna was onto something here.

While a portable heater and electric blanket are winter home must-haves, these other gadgets make worthy investments too. A heated towel rack or rail is a true everyday luxury – just think about warm fluffy towels at the ready when you need them. It takes a mere few minutes to heat up, and comes with timer options too. For the ultimate winter indulgence, why not purchase a heated foot spa? Soothe your tired soles (and soul!) and revel in pure bliss. Check out Myer, Big W or Target for great options. 7. Luxuriate in scents Smell plays a big part in setting the mood, and certain scents like lavender, ylang ylang, or eucalyptus can inspire calm and mindfulness. While candles and home fragrances are convenient, why not splurge on an essential oil diffuser? The combination of soft, multicoloured lighting and delicately fragranced mist creates a relaxing ambience. Visit MECCA, Myer, Bed Bath N’ Table, Priceline or Dusk to find the right scent for your abode.

People Who Live The Longest

RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly

They are known as the Blue Zones – where people live exceptionally long lives. One is a cluster of Seventh Day Adventurists in California, another cluster is in Nicoya in Costa Rica, the others are basically the entire populations of Okinawa (Japan) Sardina (Italy), and Icaria (Greece). Dan Buettner, writing in the November 2005 issue of National Geographic magazine, identified the first four in a cover story, “The Secrets of a Long Life” and then published his finding in a book “The Blue Zones” in 1998. It was later established that Icaria, additionally, met all of the criteria to be included. COMMON FEATURES But what are the common features of all five? How do these populations actually achieve the widespread ability to live healthy and vigorous lives well into their 90s, with many living substantially longer?

It all revolves around their simple lifestyles. Their diet is heavy on greens and legumes, they exercise daily in their own vegetable gardens, they are far removed from the stress of watching the nightly TV news, they adhere to spiritual values and maintain strong family kinships. Research published in November 2019, from the Loma Linda University in California concluded that Adventists have a lower cancer risk and a longer life expectancy than the general US population. This is an important finding for those of us in developed countries, as the study measured the link between lifestyle, diet, disease and mortality of Seventh-day Adventists. We can all learn from these lessons. PLANT BASED DIET Five simple health behaviours promoted by the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 100 years (not smoking, eating a plant-based diet, snacking on

nuts, regular exercise, and maintaining normal body weight) appear increase life span up to 10 years. If cattle can live off plants, why can’t humans? Barbara Moore proved it can be done. A famous vegetarian and long distance walker, in 1960 she walked from San Francisco to New York in 86-days, with only nuts, honey, raw fruit and vegetable juice for nourishment. Her mantra was that people could live to be 200 years old by abstaining from smoking, alcohol and sex. Given this knowledge, perhaps our health system, and particularly the aged care sector, needs to embrace a transition to plant based diets.

Victorian RSL Lawn Bowls The RSL Victoria bowls teams were very pleased to be able to hold their annual Duke of Edinburgh Shield this year after it was a victim of COVID-19 last year. They managed to get in just before Victoria’s most recent lockdown and chose a glorious autumn weekend in May. Around 1,600 Victorian RSL Service and Affiliate members representing 84 RSL Sub-branches headed to 14 locations across the state to pit their skills against each other for the 2021 Duke of Edinburgh Shield, sponsored once again by Vasey RSL Care. This year’s Duke of Edinburgh Shield is perhaps its most poignant yet. Played between RSL sub-branches, the first tournament was held in 1954 between four teams. Now there is about 90 sub-branches involved. At Moama, RSL bowls co-ordinator John Munro decided to honour Prince Philip’s recent death with something a bit more special. With Munro leading a flag-raising ceremony alongside Echuca Federal Band bugler Mitchell Clack, players observed a minute’s silence to honour and reflect on Prince Philip’s life to open the weekend’s play. “Sadly on April 9 this year, The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Phillip passed away ... but we are standing here today, 67 years on, with over 1600 bowlers that compete for the Duke of Edinburgh Shield,” Munro said during his speech on the day. “All at the same tournament at the same time, one realises the magnitude of this event.”

The winning teams at each site were: • Moama RSL Gold • Waverley 1 • Inverloch Gold • Rochester • Deniliquin • Melton RSL • Western Composite • Doncaster

• Footscray • Queenscliff/Point Lonsdale • Epping • Lakes Entrance • Bundoora • Kyneton 1 • Moe/Trafalgar

Congratulations to overall winners Queenscliff/Point Lonsdale, and to Waverley 1 in second place. AUGUST 2021 | FIND GEELONG
