“Back to School” marks the return to routines, classrooms, and learning adventures. It’s an exciting yet often challenging period for students, parents, and educators.

As millions of students across Australia prepare for the start of a new school year, the landscape of education reveals both persistent challenges and promising initiatives. From financial pressures on families to declining attendance rates, the experiences of parents, students, and educators are shaped by a complex interplay of social, economic, and institutional factors.

The cost of back-to-school preparations has become a significant burden for Australian families, with data revealing that parents will collectively spend $12.9 billion on school supplies in 2024. For primary school students, the average expense per child is $2,547, while for secondary students, it rises to $4,793. Alarmingly, nearly 30% of parents report struggling to afford essential items such as uniforms, stationery, and technology. To make ends meet, some families are turning to second-hand options, while others are forced to have their children go without certain supplies.

Advocacy groups have called for more robust support systems to ensure that all students have equitable access to the resources they need to thrive. One recent initiative seeking to address these financial challenges is the Australian Greens’ $10 billion plan to make public schooling free. Under this proposal, families would receive an $800 back-to-school payment per child, covering essential expenses like textbooks, laptops, and uniforms. This policy, funded by increased taxation on large corporations, represents a bold vision for reducing education inequality and easing the financial strain on parents.

Australia is facing a worrying trend in school attendance rates, which have fallen from 91.4% in 2019 to 88.3%. Over 1.6 million students missed the equivalent of a month’s lessons in the past year. While some families have opted for homeschooling, which has doubled since 2019, others cite growing disengagement as a reason for poor attendance. Indigenous students and those from low-income families are disproportionately affected, with only 44% of the latter attending at least 90% of school sessions.

Experts have linked these declines to a range of factors, including the impact of racism, bullying, and unsupportive environments on student morale. Additionally, a rising number of students are diagnosed with cognitive disabilities, further highlighting the need for inclusive teaching approaches and tailored support services. Addressing attendance issues will require systemic changes to foster positive school cultures and

create engaging learning experiences for students. Amid these challenges, community-driven programs are stepping up to bridge gaps in resources and support. One standout example is Kimberwalli, an Aboriginal Centre for Excellence in Western Sydney. The center recently distributed backpacks filled with school supplies to thousands of students, aiming to empower Indigenous youth and enhance their sense of readiness for the new school year.

Feedback from parents and educators highlights the profound impact of such initiatives. Students participating in these programs report feeling more prepared and confident, contributing to better engagement in classrooms. These efforts underscore the importance of community collaboration in addressing educational inequalities and boosting participation rates. In addition to financial pressures, sustainability is an emerging focus in back-to-school preparations. On average, Australian families spend $694 on school supplies for primary students and $1,149 for secondary students each year. This cycle of consumption has significant environmental implications, prompting a push for more sustainable practices.

Experts recommend families take inventory of existing supplies, recycle or upcycle unused items, and prioritize eco-friendly purchases. Retailers such as Officeworks have introduced recycling programs and sustainable product lines to cater to these needs. By adopting such practices, families can reduce waste while also easing the financial burden of yearly school shopping.

In the Northern Territory, efforts to strengthen the education workforce are in full swing. As the 2025 school year begins, the region is welcoming 146 new teachers and 23 principals to schools across the territory. These educators are undergoing orientation and training programs to better integrate into local communities and adapt to the unique challenges of remote and rural schooling.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment by the Northern Territory Government to invest in education infrastructure and human resources. By addressing staffing shortages and improving teacher quality, the region aims to provide students with better learning experiences and opportunities for success.

The issues highlighted above underscore the need for coordinated policy interventions to tackle the root causes of inequality in education. Financial assistance programs such as the Greens’ proposal for free public schooling have the potential to reduce economic barriers and improve access to quality education. Moreover, targeted efforts to increase attendance rates—through anti-bullying campaigns, inclusive curricula, and additional support for marginalized groups—are essential for fostering long-term engagement.

At the same time, sustainability must remain a priority. Government incentives and community programs promoting environmentally conscious practices can create a culture of sustainability within schools and families alike. Retail partnerships and innovative recycling initiatives can further drive this shift, ensuring that education becomes not only equitable but also environmentally responsible.

Ultimately, addressing Australia’s educational challenges requires a collective effort. Policymakers, educators, families, and community organizations must work together to create a system that is both inclusive and resilient. Whether through large-scale funding programs or grassroots initiatives, every contribution plays a part in shaping the future of education.

As students step into their classrooms for the new year, they carry with them the hope of a better future—one that can be realized through a shared commitment to equity, engagement, and sustainability.

Who to Trust and Deal with?

FINANCIAL

I thought it would be worth reminding everyone that it is important when seeking financial planning advice, to do some due diligence in relation to the person and/or company you are about to deal with before entrusting your money to them. Firstly, I want to tell you my story and why I got into financial planning.

It all began over 25 years ago. I was a secondary teacher and I wanted to go back and do some further studies. Prior to becoming a teacher and before joining the army, I was halfway through my accounting qualifications. I thought that would be a good place to start –to go and complete my accounting degree. However, someone mentioned that I should look at financial planning. It was an emerging profession that would bring together insurance agents, investment advisors, and the like. It sounded interesting so I decided to do an introductory subject in this area with the Securities Institute of Victoria and Deakin.

It did not take long before word got around that I was studying financial planning. I was approached by an older friend of mine who had trouble reading and understanding financial matters. He presented me with a piece of paper and asked me to explain what the share certificate meant. I had to point out to my friend that what I was holding was not a share certificate but in fact a letter confirming he had gifted over $150,000 to someone we both knew who called himself a financial planner.

There is a lot to this story, but the end result was that whilst my friend got his money back, many other people who also got caught up in the scheme (we are talking about thousands of people in my community and around Australia),

lost their money, their homes, ended up in divorce and some becoming so physically sick they could not get out of bed.

How did this happen?

Well, the person selling the scheme worked in a trusted position and told everyone he was a financial planner. Unfortunately, no one at the time did any due diligence to determine if he was really a financial planner. It was only later discovered that this person, whilst he was listed on the ASIC register as a financial planner, was licenced by a company that was in the process of being deregistered.

Also, the person was selling a scheme that was literally too good to be true. People were being told that their money would double or triple in only a couple of years’ time when the company they invested in listed on the stock exchange.

Unfortunately, many people believed his story…he was a good salesperson. He was raided by ASIC and the whole scheme fell apart.

It was because of this event that I decided to become a fully licensed financial planner. I made it my mission to try and protect as many people as possible; to educate them and help them with their financial needs. I have been working as a financial planner for over 20 years now and I see part of my role, for which I am unapologetic for, is to try and remove people from our profession that are, in my opinion, doing that wrong thing.

Even now, I find myself currently dealing with mortgage brokers and ex-financial planners who think it is ok to either provide advice when they are not qualified and/ or licenced to do so or they are setting up schemes to either defraud the ATO or someone else. It never ends.

So, who can you trust and talk to when it comes to your money and needing advice?

In Australia, financial planning is governed by strict regulations designed to protect consumers. However, just like anywhere, there are still important steps to take to ensure you’re working with someone you can trust. Here’s how you can go about finding a trustworthy financial planner and making sure their advice is in your best interests.

1. Understand the Regulatory Framework in Australia

• Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC): ASIC regulates financial planners in Australia and ensures that they adhere to the legal requirements of the industry. You can check the ASIC Financial Adviser Register to verify whether a financial advisor is licensed and check for any disciplinary action against them.

• Australian Financial Services (AFS) License: Anyone providing financial advice must hold an AFS license or be an authorized representative of an AFS license holder. This ensures they meet the standards for providing financial advice in Australia.

2. Check for Relevant Qualifications and Credentials

• Qualifications: Nearly all the current financial planners have updated their qualifications in the past few years. For most, they will have a bachelor or post grad in financial planner.

• Financial Advice Association of Australia (FAAA) or Institute of Financail Professionals (IFPA): Look for advisors who are members of the FAAA or IFPA, as they adhere to the association’s code of ethics and ongoing professional development requirements. Note: It is not a requirement anymore to belong to an association anymore so whilst this was a requirement to practice financial planning in the past it is no longer a requirement.

• Registered Tax (Financial) Adviser or Accountant: If you’re dealing with tax and investment strategies, you might want to look for an adviser with this registration, ensuring they’re qualified to give advice on tax issues. As an example, I am both a financial planner and an accountant. There are not many people in Australia who are both.

3. Fiduciary Duty and Best Interest Duty

• Best Interest Duty: Since 2013, Australian financial advisers have been legally required to act in their clients’ best interests under the Corporations Act. This means they must prioritize your needs over their own financial interests. The “best interest duty” requires financial advisers to act with care, skill, and diligence.

• Fiduciary Duty: Some advisers might have a fiduciary duty (i.e., they must act in your best interest) while others may not. Financial planners who are fiduciaries are required to disclose any conflicts of interest and provide clear, unbiased advice. While the legal duty to act in your best interest is broad, it’s still important to ask upfront whether they have a fiduciary obligation and how they’re compensated.

4. Look for Fee Transparency

• Fee-for-service (fee-only): Advisors who charge a fixed fee or an hourly rate are typically considered to be more transparent and less likely to have conflicts of interest. This means they don’t earn commissions from the financial products they recommend.

• Commission-based: Some advisers earn commissions from recommending specific products, such as insurance or investment products. It is important to understand why they receive commissions and how this might have an impact on the advice provided. For instance, we only receive commissions for personal insurance advice because people are reluctant to pay large fees to get advice in this area especially if they are unsure if they will obtain the insurance cover to begin with.

5. Do Your Research

• ASIC Financial Adviser Register: You can verify if an adviser is properly licensed by checking the ASIC Financial Adviser Register. It provides details of advisers’ qualifications, history, and whether they’ve faced any disciplinary action.

• FAAA’s Adviser Search: The Financial Advice Association of Australia has an online Adviser Search tool, where you can find members who meet professional standards, including compliance with the FAAA’s Code of Ethics.

• Google Reviews, Testimonials, and Word of Mouth: It can be helpful to search for reviews online or ask friends, family, or colleagues if they’ve worked with a particular adviser. Personal referrals can help you feel more confident in your choice.

• Awards. Some advisors have won awards. Whilst this is not a true indication of trustworthiness, it is good to know that they are contributing to their profession or are known by their peers.

6. Ask the Right Questions

Here are some key questions to ask when choosing a financial planner:

• Do you have a best interest duty?

• How are you compensated (fees, commissions, or both)?

• How much do you charge and are you on the higher or lower end when it comes to fees compared to other advisors?

• Can you explain the reasons behind your advice?

• What are your qualifications and experience?

• How often will we meet to review my financial plan?

• Can you provide a detailed Statement of Advice (SOA)?

7. Evaluate Their Communication and Transparency

• Clear Communication: A trustworthy financial planner should explain things in a way that is clear and understandable. If you don’t understand their recommendations or they use jargon, that’s a red flag.

• Transparency: Make sure the adviser is open about any potential conflicts of interest, fees, and commissions. They should be willing to provide a detailed breakdown of their costs and explain the reasons behind their recommendations.

8. Get a Second Opinion

If you’re ever unsure about an adviser’s recommendations, don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion from another licensed professional. This helps ensure that you’re not missing out on better options or falling victim to bad advice.

9. Look for Long-Term Relationship Compatibility

Financial planning is not a one-off task; it’s an ongoing relationship. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the adviser and that they take the time to understand your unique financial goals. Choose someone who listens and gives you advice tailored to your situation, rather than offering generic solutions.

Red Flags to Watch Out For:

• High-pressure tactics: If an adviser is pushing you into a decision or pressuring you to sign something immediately, that’s a red flag.

• Unexplained fees or commissions: If they’re not transparent about how they earn money or can’t clearly explain the fees involved, walk away.

• Unclear advice or evasiveness: If the adviser is evasive when explaining how their advice benefits you or how their fees are structured, that’s a sign to be cautious.

Final Thoughts

Finding a trustworthy financial planner in Australia requires some effort, but it’s worth it for your financial peace of mind. By making sure they have the right qualifications, adhere to ethical standards, and are transparent about their fees, you can build a relationship based on trust. Don’t rush the process—take the time to find an adviser who aligns with your values, understands your goals, and has the skills to help you achieve them.

BEING the Person You Want to Become: A Key to Reaching Your Goals

LEADERSHIP & CULTURE

What if the secret to achieving your goals wasn’t about working harder or pushing through obstacles but instead about BEING the person who naturally reaches those goals?

Understanding yourself at a deeper level is a game-changer that can transform not only your approach to success but also the quality of your relationships— with others and, most importantly, with yourself.

Self-awareness is the foundation for alignment and meaningful growth. When you truly understand your behavioural patterns, emotional triggers, and natural tendencies, you begin to see the "why" behind your actions and reactions. This clarity allows you to approach life with intention rather than simply reacting to circumstances. With greater self-awareness, you’ll notice subtle shifts in how you think, feel, and respond, creating a ripple effect that impacts everything from your personal relationships to your professional results.

For example, increased self-awareness often reveals where we may be putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves or avoiding challenges. By identifying these patterns, we can make conscious choices to respond differently—choices that align with who we want to BE. This can look like recognising when self-doubt is creeping in and intentionally choosing courage, or noticing how avoiding conflict may be holding you back and choosing to address issues with openness and clarity instead.

When we make these shifts internally, we naturally show up differently in our relationships. We become better at understanding others, seeing their unique strengths and needs, and communicating in ways that resonate. This builds trust, reduces judgment, and fosters collaboration—whether that’s within a family dynamic, a workplace team, or a community group.

But it doesn’t stop there. The benefits of this kind of self-awareness extend to how we view and treat ourselves. As you become more in tune with your authentic self, you’ll likely notice a greater sense of control and confidence. You’ll feel more aligned, less scattered, and more

intentional in your daily actions. And as a result, you’ll find that the goals you once chased start to feel more attainable— not because you worked harder, but because you became the person who naturally achieves them.

So how do you begin this process of BEING the person you want to become? It starts with curiosity—about yourself, your behaviours, and your motivations. Tools like behavioural profiling, reflective exercises, and even keeping a journal about your interactions and observations can all provide valuable insights. When you understand not only what you do but why you do it, you can begin to adjust in ways that feel authentic and empowering.

The journey of BEING isn’t always easy, but it is profoundly rewarding. :-)

It’s about growth, not perfection. It’s about recognising that every interaction—with yourself or others—is an opportunity to step closer to the version of you that aligns with your goals.

If you’re ready to take that step and explore who you are at this deeper level, I’d love to help. Imagine understanding your unique traits, patterns, and preferences and using that knowledge to create stronger relationships, a clearer sense of purpose, and real progress towards your goals.

Targeting your ideal client

BUSINESS COACH

Every business needs 5 key elements:

1. Feet through the door/ Bums on seats

2. Increased Sales

3. Increased Profit

4. Raised Brand Awareness

5. Reduced Costs

Not all products or services appeal to everyone. Although sometimes they perhaps should. For instance, everyone of working age should have a Will and a Power Of Attorney. Try telling that to an 18year old. They are completely invincible. An advert will not get them to change their mind. This then forces our entrepreneurial skills into overdrive. They are decidedly not the ideal market for this product. Identify the right market for your products.

Most business have an “ideal client” that they should be directing their marketing through. The 80/ 20 rule, or the Pareto Principle, asserts that 80% of outcomes result from 20% effort in almost all businesses This 20% needs to be very clearly directed to maintain your position in the market. The other 80% will then be all the icing on the cake to raise your profile to a wider market in brand awareness, product selection and profitable sales. This in turn will grow the core business as they become part of the ever growing 80%.

Knowing how to identify that core client is crucial to success. These clients will then be the best marketers as they proport the virtues of the products they have bought and the business they bought it from.

Identifying how to find these customers to target the marketing accurately is to understand their needs. Core clients are those for whom the business solves a problem with the goods or services

provided. There are two key aspects to core clients, Physical needs and Emotional needs.

The physical needs include:

• Demographics

• culture

• religion

• education

• age

• gender

Emotional needs include:

• Time poor

• convenience

• support

• service

We live in a WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) society. Customers are only interested in themselves. How can they get what they want, at the best price, when they want it, at the quality standard they expect for their needs.

In your research considering the target market the specific product range and assortment will also influence the logistics, display, marketing and advertising.

PHYSICAL:

Where are they situated? Can they get to the products they want quickly, or can they have it delivered to them? Where do they do their research into specific products? Ensure you are front and centre. What level of education do they have? How technical can your marketing be? Are there any limitation on the goods due to Cultural or Religious considerations? What age group is most prevalent? Are they gender orientated? Are they age specific? These are relatively easy to determine.

EMOTIONAL:

The emotive needs today have a high impact on the final purchase. Are the goods easy to find online and instore? We live in an instant society. Can the customers walk into your store and find what they want straight away? Do you

have allied products alongside the display to complete the purchase? What service do they require with information, assistance or selection criteria? What follow up support do they expect? Do the goods require delivery, installation, connection, special packaging?

Targeting customers needs will automatically draw them to your store or website as you address their needs. Simon Sinek says

Which one gives you the greatest Win? If you manipulate people into buying what they don’t there is a fair chance they will not come back, they will not give you a good review and they want even give you a second change. If you Inspire people to want the products you are selling it will make their life better, make them feel more confidant and want to come back to you next time.

Look at who needs your products, now and into the future and Target specifically. It is true your products can go across several groups. When you do your marketing aim at one group at a time. Be specific to that groups needs. If you are selling the life insurance as in the example above. The needs of a 25 year old single is very different to a 45 year old with 4 kids, and different again to a 65 year old retiree. Each of these groups of people need life insurance but the way you speak to them needs to satisfy their needs. In a children’s wear store The needs of a grandparent are different to a parent. Sell to their needs.

TOP DIGITAL MARKETING TRENDS Future-ready Nonprofits:

DIGITAL MEDIA

The digital marketing trends every nonprofit business is jumping on this year

With the new year comes new resolutions, fresh goals, and the motivation to better ourselves and our businesses. As January gets well underway, the time to build stronger donor relationships, increase engagement and create a greater impact in your Not-For-Profit (NFP) is now.

What can you do right now to start reaching your goals and growing your NFP? Digital Marketing.

Here are four digital marketing trends shaping the NFP sector in 2025:

• AI in operations

• Short-form media

• Data-driven decision making

• Business-donor transparency

AI in operations

Chatbots and virtual assistants are evolving to be capable of more humanlike interactions, providing the capacity for the automation of routine tasks such as lead nurturing and email marketing, which in turn allows human teams more time and resources for strategic work and brainstorming.

Improving skills in, and familiarity with customer service tools that utilise AI — especially those with customer segmentation and content personalisation abilities — could improve customer and donor relations with your NFP. The skills these AI tools possess allow them to interpret sentiment in conversation, so they can provide customers or donors with a more personalised experience.

Short-form media

TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are gaining popularity as effective ways to provide information and convey your nonprofit’s mission while catering to the population’s growing desire for simple, entertaining and interactive pieces of content.

With a little strategic planning, marketing teams can embrace the changes in these media platforms and use them for their benefit. Interactive features such as polls and quizzes, and short-form content such as YouTube shorts and Instagram reels can be utilised to boost engagement and target your niche audiences.

Adapting to Live-streaming and Q&A’s can open additional opportunities for real-time engagement.

Continued data-driven decision-making

Data analytic techniques have become standard practice to guide nonprofits in their decision-making. By collecting and analysing donor data, and using analytic techniques, your business can assess campaign strategy success, donor giving patterns, and audience engagement quickly and easily. By maximising the use of data analytics you can make more effective decisions for your NFP.

Increased transparency

Research is suggesting that transparency in nonprofits improves volunteer engagement and donor contributions, which can contribute to the overall success of your business.

You can maximise transparency in your nonprofit in a number of areas including:

• Finances: Share detailed financial reports, revenue breakdowns, and spending allocations openly on your website.

• Funding: Explain clearly how donor contributions are used and the intended impact of different donation types.

• Annual Reports: Publish annual reports showcasing the financial health, accomplishments and program outcomes of your NFP.

• Policies: Make organisational policies including conflict of interest and whistleblower policies easily accessible and public.

• Partnerships: Clearly disclose partnerships in the non-profit and for-profit sectors and their contributions to the finance and mission of your business.

As digital marketing becomes integral to nonprofit businesses and trends in digital marketing continue to evolve, nonprofits that embrace these trends will be better equipped to connect with their communities, enhance their operations, and achieve their mission more effectively. By integrating AI, creating engaging short-form content, leveraging data-driven insights, and maintaining transparency, your organisation can reach those New Year’s goals and stay ahead in 2025.

Keeping your not-for-profit at the forefront of digital marketing in 2025 starts with staying informed.

VoIP

A good phone system can enable a business by meeting the evergrowing demands of its customers and employees. Since the pandemic in 2020, it has been increasingly clear that having a flexible workforce that can pick up and work from any location can be the difference between your business surviving and thriving.

Over the coming months, I will write about components enabling your business flexibility and being able to meet and surpass your employees’ technology needs while delivering more to your

customers. Today, we start with a key technology, a top tier phone system helps your business communicate with customers.

VoIP stands for Voice of Internet Protocol; in simple terms it means a phone system that uses an internet connection rather than a dedicated phone line. Most phone lines, especially if you have moved to the NBN, use VoIP technology. With VoIP it is easy to have a phone system with increased functionality over traditional business phone systems, while reducing costs and simplifying administrative overhead.

Microsoft Teams Business Phone Systems

What Features do a VoIP Business Phone System offer?

Business Phone Systems have evolved beyond a menu function that connects to specific targets or takes messages. A good VoIP phone system, available anywhere there is internet connection, provides an extensive range of features:

1. Schedule phone hours and multiple call-flow scenarios (business hours, after hours).

2. Host online meetings and webinars.

3. Message internally with colleagues or stakeholders.

4. Share files, track tasks, and collaborate.

5. Diversion of calls during long wait times.

6. Calling multiple phone lines at once.

7. Calendar integration to know when not to call employees.

8. Recognition of business hours to automatically divert calls, improving employee wellbeing.

9. Emailing voicemail messages.

10. Using computers, mobile phones, and physical handsets to handle calls.

11. Improve call quality with background noise suppression.

12. Using AI to take notes, key points, create tasks, next steps, and more.

The list goes on for what a good business phone system can do to enable your business.

Microsoft Teams

There are many different VoIP business phone systems are out there, but one of the most popular, and for good reason, is Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft Teams is a product line that is built to augment the Microsoft Office suite, you’ll probably be familiar with mainstays like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Microsoft Teams is a top tier business phone system with close integration with the Microsoft ecosystem.

Teams is a cost-effective way to enable your business, especially if you’re already using the Microsoft Office suite, with monthly operational costs generally being lower than traditional business phone systems.

Lump Sum Payment In Arrears To Be Exempt From Medicare Levy

Individuals who receive an eligible lump sum payment in arrears after 1 July 2024 will not have to pay Medicare levy on that amount, under recently enacted legislation.

This measure ensures that if you would have otherwise not been liable to pay Medicare levy, or a reduced amount, you are not penalised for receiving a lump sum payment in arrears.

What is a lump sum payment in arrears?

The characteristics of a lump sum payment in arrears is that the amount received relates to:

- a previous income year, and - the payment of an owed or previously underpaid amount (eg underpayment of wages or back payment of workers’ compensation).

Eligible lump sum payments include salary or wages, superannuation income streams, annuities, compensation payments, a Commonwealth education or training payment and exempt pensions (including under a law of a foreign country).

How does the new concession work?

Income tax and Medicare levy surcharge concessions in relation to lump sum payments in arrears already existed.

This new measure focuses on Medicare levy concessions for those who are under the Medicare levy threshold or the Medicare levy phase-in rate applied to them in the income year the amount accrued.

If you are expecting a lump sum payment in arrears, know that Medicare levy will only apply to that amount if you were liable for it in the income year that it accrued. Otherwise, Medicare levy will not apply.

If you need more information in relation to this measure, please contact our office.

BOOKKEEPING

The Price is Right

Pricing a product or service is one of the most critical decisions a business owner must make. Charge too much, and you risk scaring away potential customers. Charge too little, and you might not cover your costs or earn the profit you need to sustain and grow your business.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand how to determine the right price for your product or service using smart pricing strategies.

1. Understand Your Costs

The first step in pricing is understanding all of the costs involved in delivering your product or service. These costs typically break down into two categories:

• Fixed Costs: These are costs that remain constant, regardless of how much you produce or sell. They include things like rent, utilities, software subscriptions, and salaried employees.

• Variable Costs: These fluctuate depending on how much you produce or sell. Materials, hourly wages, packaging, and shipping costs all fall under this category.

Once you’ve calculated both fixed and variable costs, you can figure out your break-even point—the minimum number of sales you need to cover both types of costs. This is crucial, as it ensures that your pricing will at least allow you to avoid losses.

2. Analyse the Market

Next, you’ll want to research the market. Understanding what your competitors charge is an essential part of the pricing strategy. However, just copying your competitors isn’t always the best approach. Look at:

• Direct Competitors: These are businesses offering similar products or services. What price range do they offer, and how does your product compare in terms of quality and features?

• Indirect Competitors: These may not be offering exactly what you do, but they still capture your potential customers’ attention. For example, a local bakery might compete with a coffee shop that offers pre-packaged pastries.

• Customer Expectations: What do your customers value most? Are they looking for premium quality, or are they more focused on affordability? This can help you position your price in a way that aligns with what your target market expects.

3. Factor in Profit Margin

One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not accounting for the profit margin. After covering all your costs, you need to ensure that you’re making a profit. Profit margin is typically calculated as a percentage of the cost of goods sold (COGS). A common rule of thumb for small businesses is to target a profit margin between 10% and 20%, though this can vary depending on the industry. For instance, if your total cost per product is $50, and you want a 20% profit margin, you would add $10 to the cost (for a total price of $60). This ensures that your pricing strategy not only covers costs but also allows for sustainable growth.

4. Consider Psychological Pricing

Psychological pricing can have a powerful impact on your sales. For instance, pricing something at $99.99 instead of $100 can trigger a perception of a better deal, even though the difference is just one cent.

In addition to this “charm pricing,” consider tiered pricing strategies, bundling, or offering discounts for bulk purchases. Offering multiple price points or subscription-based pricing can also appeal to different customer segments and encourage repeat business.

Another side to Psychological Pricing is to deliberately have a higher price point to your competitors to have a higher perceived value. Be sure though that your product or service can stand up to this expectation as it can very quickly crumble if people realise your product is in fact inferior.

5. Test and Adjust

Even with all the research and calculations in place, pricing is not a one-time decision. Over time, customer behaviour, market conditions, and your business costs can change. That’s why it’s important to test your pricing strategy. You might try offering a new product at a slightly higher price to see how customers respond or provide limited-time discounts to see if they increase sales volume.

By tracking your sales data and monitoring customer feedback, you’ll be able to adjust your pricing strategy as needed, ensuring long-term profitability.

Conclusion

Pricing is both an art and a science. By carefully calculating costs, understanding market conditions, factoring in profit margins, and considering psychological pricing techniques, you can find a price point that supports your financial goals.

In the end, the right price isn’t just about what customers are willing to pay—it’s about creating a balanced strategy that ensures your business can thrive in both the short and long term.

Painting wooden surfaces

PAINTING & DECORATING

There are many wood surfaces inside a building that need painting. Skirting boards, dados, architraves, window frames picture rails, feature timber walls and furniture – all require different painting technique to plaster walls.

Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving a smooth, painted finish.

1. Cover work surface

Spread plastic sheeting on the floor around the to-be-painted area so it doesn’t get splashed on. Laying newspaper or canvas on top of the plastic will stop you slipping on the plastic beneath and also soaks up paint spills.

2. Prepare wooden surface

Don rubber gloves and goggles or glasses to protect your hands and eyes. Mix a solution of water and TSP, sugar soap or borax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip a cloth in the solution, squeeze dry and wipe all surfaces to be painted. Rinse with another cloth dipped in clear, warm water. Let the timber dry completely.

Now check for any holes, gouges, nicks or scratches. Fill them in with wood filler using a flexible putty knife.

3. Sand the surface

Don a dust mask or respirator and hearing protection. Sand the timber flat areas with a random orbital sander and 200–280 grit sandpaper. This helps the wooden surface to bond with the paint. Sanding by hand is better for uneven surfaces such as you find on furniture.

4. Clean off dust

Using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove the dust and wipe with a damp cloth.

5. Prime wooden surface

Mix your primer well and apply with a brush or roller. When it has dried, check to see if the primer is transparent or streaky; if so, apply the primer a second time. A roller will prime a flat surface more quickly and leave it with a smoother finish.

6. Sand again

Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand down the dry surface again. Apply light pressure so that gouges don’t form.

7. Clean again

Use a vacuum cleaner and cloth as before to wipe away the dust.

8. Paint the surface

Foam-density rollers are useful for painting large surfaces. Insert a paint tray liner into the paint tray, then pour in paint so that it fills the tray less than halfway. Gently dab the roller into the paint and roll the paint up and down the slope of the tray a few times to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. Roll the paint lightly onto the wooden surface. A high-density foam roller gives better coverage with thinner latex paint than with oil-based paints.

Paintbrushes are better for fiddlier jobs like window frames and furniture. Insert the bristles of the brush into the paint can just a third of their length each time you need more paint. Once on the wooden surface, stroke the brush in a parallel direction to the wood grain. Use short strokes. Keep a wet edge at all times so that you don’t leave overlapping marks.

For a more professional appearance, you could try spraying the surface rather than using a paint brush.

Do not be tempted to apply a second coat of paint after this coat has dried, as this will cause the paint to tear.

9. Sand the first coat

The way to achieve a smoother finish is to sand and paint one more time. When the first coat had dried, sand as before. This will flatten any bumps or inconsistencies introduced by the roller or paintbrush.

Gently sand by hand with 220-grit sandpaper. If using an orbital sander, attach the sandpaper and run it as lightly as possible over the surface. Do not apply any other weight except that of the sander itself.

After sanding, bunch up a cloth. Keeping it loose, run it lightly over the surface. If you apply too much pressure, the cloth ‘s surface may embed itself onto the wood.

10. Apply a second coat of paint

Apply a second coat with the roller or brush, and let dry, preferably overnight. Paint is more durable the longer it is left to dry.

Targeting acne where it starts

NATUROPATHY

Your skin is not just the shell to your body, it’s actually an organ, and whilst topical creams, lotions and balms all have their place, if the issue is due to the relationship between your skin and other organs, the topical treatment will likely fall short.

Whilst hormones are usually the first place most people look, I actually find looking to the liver can be most helpful. The relationship between the liver and the skin is strong as the major role of the liver is in detoxification, and if the liver is unable to preform this task well, it’s often the skin that suffers as the body attempts to detoxify via the skin.

But detoxification is not the only role of the liver, it also metabolises hormones. This means that there are 2 pathways by which the liver is involved: detoxification and hormones. Usually minor liver dysfunction is evident before puberty, however the change in hormones brought about by the onset of puberty can make this more obvious through symptoms like headaches, fatigue and sluggish digestion. Since the liver is primarily a digestive organ, working closely with the bowels, if constipation or food allergies are present, the toxic load of the liver can increase.

As expected, hormones also play a large part in acne, as high androgens (oestrogen and testosterone) can cause the skin to become more oily which can block the skin pores.

Stress is also involved, due to increased production the hormone cortisol with high stress. This is helpful in the short-term, but long-term high cortisol leads to inflammation.

If acne is already a problem for you, stress will likely exacerbate it with increased inflammation of the skin.

Sugar also plays an important role in the inflammatory process, as the energy high, followed by the low will also increase cortisol and lead to inflammation, along with further inflammation when the sugar is metabolised by the liver.

So, as you can see, there are a lot of factors at play, but here are some recommendations to improve acne:

• Reduce sugar intake, and include whole foods (such as fruit and vegetables)

• Reduce alcohol and processed foods

• Increase water intake to assist your body in detoxification

• Eat bitter leafy greens (rocket, dandelion greens) and cruciferous vegetables

• (broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts)

• Reduce life stressors that you are able to.

If you need further support, natural medicines can help with improving liver function, regulating the nervous system response to stress and balancing hormones. Kathryn Messenger BHSc

GEELONG COUNCIL NEWS

Advocacy against Lara incinerator continues

Council has reiterated its opposition to the Lara waste to energy incinerator as part of advocacy efforts for the project to be cancelled and will seek to become a decision making authority for similar proposals in the future.

EPA Victoria approved the development licence for the private facility on McManus Road in 2023, which will see 400,000 tonnes of waste each year incinerated and converted into 35 megawatts of electricity – enough to power up to 50,000 homes.

Residents, community groups such as Geelong Sustainability, Say NO to the Lara Big Incinerator and Committee for Geelong, and Council continue to object to the planned incinerator.

There are significant concerns about potential community health and environmental impacts, and questions regarding the plant’s safety and viability, including:

• proximity to homes as close as 350 metres and schools and preschools within five kilometres;

• adverse health effects, including significant associations with some cancers, birth defects, infant deaths and miscarriage;

• potential odours;

• air pollution, including residual particles landing on produce grown in the region; and

• the production of 4.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) over its lifetime.

As a referral authority, Council’s role in this process to date has been limited to providing advice and feedback regarding the application’s consistency with the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme.

Council has written to the Minister for Planning twice on the issue and last night, resolved to continue advocating for the project to be halted.

This will involve seeking changes to the Planning Scheme to enable Council to be the decision making authority for any future waste to energy proposals within the City of Greater Geelong.

Council also requested that the CEO prepare a strategic policy report about waste to energy in our municipality for councillors to consider in the future.

“Council has listened carefully to the community’s concerns about the facility. We understand that Lara residents and the broader community are troubled by the potential environmental and health impacts of this waste to energy incinerator.

Council is committed to continue supporting the community and advocating against this project, and we thank each and every person who has shared their feedback with us on the issue.”

You Yangs Ward Councillor Chris Burson

“The Notice of Motion was supported by Council unanimously.

The Council’s role in the formal process of this planning application was unfortunately limited to providing advice and feedback on this project.

So, we are seeking to address this weakness in the planning process, given the significant community impact associated with such proposals.

This is not just a Lara issue; this is a City of Greater Geelong issue.”

What’s it like working at our Garden Waste facility?

Meet Satar, one of our team members on the front line, turning the contents of your garden organics bin into earth-feeding compost. This work is done right here in Geelong, at the City’s Anakie Garden Organics Processing Facility.

Tell us one of the things you like most about your job.

Before moving to Australia, I lived in Germany, where I managed large events and hotels.

Although this role is very different, it has the same buzz and activity of my management role. The constant movement with the various contractors, farm staff and customers create an interesting and vibrant work environment.

I also enjoy being a part of the circular economy that positively impacts our environment and community.

What are some weird things people put in their garden bins?

Microwaves, computers, furniture, LPG gas bottles, dog beds and bean bags!

Has working in this role changed how you think about waste?

I didn’t understand how much work and effort went into waste processing. Starting at the bottom makes you appreciate the importance of keeping contamination out of our recycling streams.

Contamination in the yellow and green lid bins dramatically impacts the quality of the products we’re trying to produce. You can make a big difference just by putting the right thing in your bin.

What is your number one waste tip or something you do at home to reduce waste?

Think of what you put into your green and yellow lid bins as ingredients that get turned into new products, because that’s what they are.

Not sure if something is recyclable or compostable? Request a free fridge magnet or search the City’s Waste & Recycling Guide to see what items go into which bins.

What do you wish the Geelong community knew about your job?

The garden waste they put in their green bin goes somewhere, and gets turned into high-quality compost!

I also think people don’t realise the diverse skills and experiences that each waste worker brings to the team.

For example, our picking team (the workers who pull contamination like plastic and dog poo out of garden bin material) includes a software programmer. Our coordinator started his career as a sourdough baker, our horticulturist was a kitchen garden teacher, and I have worked in high-end manufacturing for the automotive industry.

What are some challenges of working at the Garden Organics Processing Facility?

There is a lot of large and unusual machinery at our site, so safety is a constant topic that we discuss and live daily. Also, being on a remote site, we need to be mindful of bushfires and snakes in summer, which is interesting, having moved over from Europe!

What would your perfect day (when not at work) look like?

Going for a walk on the beach with my wife. I am still amazed by the amount of nature in Australia and how accessible it is living in Geelong.

CRUISE SHIPS CREATE A SPECTACLE IN OUR BAY

Two cruise ships visiting our region, the Regatta and the Silver Muse, brought just over 1,000 passengers, plus crew and

staff making for quite a sight, especially as the Spirit of Tasmania passed by.

Our cruise welcome team of Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine volunteers were on site to greet passengers with a warm welcome and a bag including maps and visitor information. They often share advice on where to go and what to do, and help passengers find their way either on foot, or to the organised tour buses nearby.

Our location is a key advantage, with passengers disembarking in walking

distance to the CBD and major attractions and shopping centres. We are perfectly positioned to showcase both local experiences, world class wineries and the gateway to the Great Ocean Road.

We are actively working to increase the cruise market and since cruise ships recommenced sailings in Australia postCOVID, Geelong has hosted 15 cruise ships, welcoming close to 12,000 visitors and delivering around $5 million in direct economic impact.

BIKES and E SCOOTERS

Bikes and E Scooters are often easy targets over the summer holiday period, particularly in our beachside towns.

Whether at home, at the shops, in the caravan park or at holiday homes, remember to secure your bikes and e scooters to prevent their theft.

• Use a good quality D or U lock

• Lock it to a fixed, immoveable object that can’t be broken or moved

• Lock the frame and wheels to the parking infrastructure with one or more locks, especially if your wheels have quick release mechanisms.

• Whenever possible, keep your bike inside your home or in a locked shed or garage,

• Engrave the letter “V” and your drivers’ licence number (or another unique identifier) on the frame, apply data dots or attach GPS trackers.

• Take photos of your bike, including identifying features, marks and accessories

• Register your bike on BikeVAULT – a free service, supported by Neighbourhood Watch Victoria. You can record your bike’s make, model, colour and serial number and even upload photos of it.

Always lock your bike, even if it’s parked in your garage, your carport or on your balcony or if you’re only leaving it unattended for a short period.

VF

COMMODORE OWNERS - ACT NOW!

The increasing thefts of VF Holden Commodores in the Geelong area is a huge concern to the owners of these vehicles.

Take action NOW to protect your pride and joy.

• Fit a steering wheel lock

• Park in a garage, or if not possible, park behind locked gates or in front of another vehicle

• Run a horn bypass to the vehicle

• Fit a brake lock with padlock

• Fit a keypad security system

• Use ignition shields, battery isolators and GPS trackers

• Investigate other technologies to protect your car

A victim of a VF theft strongly advises not leaving the car unattended at any supermarket, beach or anywhere unless For more tips, visit https://www.racv. com.au/royalauto/transport/cars/ preventing-car-theft.html

you have fitted further security measures, as these thieves are taking them from absolutely anywhere and in broad daylight.

If it’s precious – protect it!

LOCK YOUR CARS

Continue to be vigilant and lock your vehicles whenever unattended and take everything of value with you.

Sadly, opportunists are out there checking cars for valuables left in unlocked cars. Ensure it’s not your car they find unlocked. We are all busy juggling work, kids on school holidays, shopping, home and everything else that is life.

And all too often we get a bit careless and leave the laptop in the car ready for tomorrow, or forget to bring the handbag or backpack inside.

Whether you are spending a day at the beach, running in to the supermarket or to pay for fuel – LOCK YOUR CAR!!

FROM THIS TO THIS IN LESS THAN FOUR DAYS

The 8th last VF Maloo R8 Holden built, #1372, was parked outside it’s owner’s home in Lara overnight on 28 December. Until 1.50am!

Thieves arrived, cut the horn cable and were able to start the car and they were gone, in a matter of minutes.

Less than four days later, the owner was alerted to a possible sighting of his stripped vehicle in Truganina. He went to the site to see the remains of that elite VF located on a vacant block of land in Truganina, totally stripped and sprayed black to cover evidence. The owner was able to identify a few remaining personal items left in the car. The car was unrecognisable and there was no vehicle identification at all left anywhere on the vehicle.

Unfortunately there is a design flaw with the keyless ignition in VF Holdens that allows thieves to disable the alarm from outside the vehicle. Once they break in to the car, a device is used to pair a new key to the car, it is started and away they go. All in a matter of seconds.

Protect your VF now. Buy a steering lock and fit it immediately. Other preventative measures are available from your mechanic and auto electricians in the Geelong area.

The sad demise of a Holden VF Maloo Ute, once the owner’s absolute pride and joy, has been stolen from the owner’s home at Lara.

Hard Days

As Winston Churchill was working to form the United Nations after WWII, he famously said, ’Never let a good crisis go to waste ’

Some of you will know my story of facing a crisis – being kidnapped at gunpoint on my ninth day of teaching as Headmaster at Wooreen State School in 1977. Coping at that time was hard, to say the least, but it became a catalyst for personal growth as I pushed through trying to remain positive, kind, grateful and forgiving.

Only after we’ve been down, can we go up. Only after we’ve had loss can we experience renewal. As much as we try to avoid the negatives, they are inevitable but it’s through them that we grow.

Adversity and hard times aren’t bad in themselves. In this world they are unavoidable. It’s how we deal with them and grow through them that counts.

By working through difficult times, we can become stronger people in the long run. Our children too, if well supported, will become more resilient and better developed individuals. And as our children observe us navigate the hard times, they will learn by our example of how to work through their crises.

Some of the greatest achievements and stories have come in the midst of turmoil and pain. Edward (Weary) Dunlop’s feats as a WWII prisoner of war in Burma are inspirational There are many such stories of heroism in the midst of adversity.

A few suggestions that may be helpful as we push through challenging days:

• Determine to face the problems with a positive mindset knowing that we will get through them

• Remember that tough times don’t last but tough people do

• Focus on the good things of life

• Practice gratitude – listing all the things we can be thankful for and going out of our way to thank anyone and everyone for both the little and the big

• Be kind to the people around us – reaching out in kindness to others lifts our spirits

• Speak positively about people and situations – try to accept others mistakes remembering none of us are perfect

• Be kind to ourselves – treat ourselves as we would a friend or colleague going through similar hard times

• Maintaining healthy relationships is worth the effort – making the most of every opportunity to build, support and encourage others

Cottage by the Sea is having its annual Giving Day on Tuesday, March 4. From 9am–9pm, matching donors will double every dollar donated to the children’s charity.

All the funds raised will go directly to the charity’s programs so that more children can experience inspiring and fun opportunities at Cottage by the Sea.

“Last year’s Giving Day was a huge success. More than 1,700 children benefitted from Cottage by the Sea in FY 2023/24 through life-changing experiences by the sea and adventures in nature,” said Adam Wake, Cottage by the Sea CEO.

“This year – our 135th year of operation – it is crucial that we reach as many children as we can on our programs, but we need the generosity of our community to make it possible. Our young people are finding it tough. We are experiencing a shift in how children present at Cottage – a definite increase in those who need additional support,” continued Wake.

Cottage by the Sea is a non-government funded Australian children’s charity. Its mission is to enhance the lives of children by providing inspiration, fun and opportunity within a holiday environment. To continue offering its transformative programs for children and young people, Cottage by the Sea needs the support of individuals, trusts and corporations.

Donating to Giving Day on March 4 will help Cottage by the Sea give more children a break.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB BOWLS

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

FC LEOPOLD

FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.

We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town.

FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions.

FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player.

Like the page to keep up to date with the clubs progress as exciting things are happening with lights and a massive COGG funded pavilion project.

MUSIC CONCERT

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox - Magic and Moonlight Tour 2025

Fresh off playing their 1000th show, retro musical collective Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox has announced they will return to Australia in 2025 as part of their “MAGIC & MOONLIGHT” World Tour.

“If we’ve learned anything from ten years of touring the world, it’s that great music has the ability to transcend time and space in a way that is best described as ‘magic,” says Postmodern Jukebox creator and show director, Scott Bradlee. “In fact, all of us likely have a song or two that instantly transports us to another place. Our ‘Moonlight & Magic’ World Tour is meant to celebrate this phenomenon through breathtaking live performances that will be remembered long after the curtain falls.”

Concertgoers can expect to enter a parallel musical universe where modern-day earworms and iconic pop hits alike are reimagined in classic genres like 1920s jazz, Swing, Doo-wop and Motown, and brought to life by a cast of some of the world’s best singers, dancers, and instrumentalists. Think “The Great Gatsby” meets “Sinatra at the Sands” meets “Back! …To The Future”.

When Bradlee started making YouTube videos that remade the hits of today in the classic styles of yesterday, a “viral” success story was born —one that quickly led to sold out shows across North America and Europe in the Summer of 2014. The touring act received rave reviews from industry publications and world-renowned artists alike.

In the years that followed, “PMJ” built a reputation as the “Saturday Night Live of singers” by introducing audiences to dozens of exceptional musical artists and turning them into bonafide stars. Ten years and two billion views on their YouTube channel later, a Postmodern Jukebox show has become something of an annual musical tradition for hundreds of thousands of dedicated fans, all over the world.

Three Geelong greats set to be awarded AFL Life Membership

The AFL has announced a number of key figures that will receive Life Membership this year, with three Geelong greats among those set to be recognised at the 2025 premiership season launch in March.

The late Michael ‘Mick’ Turner has been recognised for his contribution to the game and the Geelong Football Club, an incredible man that spent over 45 years serving Australian Rules Football.

Across his career, Mick played 245 games for Geelong between 1974 and 1988, captaining the Cats from 1984 to 1986 while also being named on the wing in Geelong’s Team of the Century.

Turner went on to have a profound impact on the game following his playing career, spending 25 years as Talent Manager of the Geelong Falcons, helping 134 men and women fulfil their dream of becoming an AFL or AFLW player.

A hugely influential figure in the history of Australian Rules Football, Mick was notified of his honour before he unfortunately passed away late last year.

Mitch Duncan and Zach Tuohy will also receive Life Membership in 2025, after the pair qualified under the provision relating to 300 official games.

At the conclusion of the 2024 AFL season, Duncan had played 295 premiership games and a further 22 official preseason games, automatically qualifying for Life Membership this year.

Often considered one of the competition’s most underrated stars, Duncan was influential in two Geelong premierships (2011 & 2022) while consistently ranking among the best ball-users in the AFL.

Zach Tuohy has also been recognised for his contribution to the game, finishing his career at the end of 2024 with 288 premiership games, 19 official pre-season games, one State of Origin match and six International Rules Tests.

A popular figure at the Geelong Football Club, Tuohy also played an instrumental role in Geelong’s 2022 premiership, while also finishing with the most games for any Irish-born player in V/AFL history.

Mr Dillon said the AFL congratulated each of the new Life members and the game was grateful for the extraordinary service they had collective given across administration, playing, umpiring, talent identification, medical support and assistance and mentoring to others who had come behind them.

“Life membership of the AFL is a high honour and recognises both quality of service across many years and an incredible love for the game and support for its growth and future success,” Mr Dillon said.

“Each of our new life members has been a leader for our game in their work, has supported so many others around them, and been someone who has changed our game for the better.

“We look forward to welcoming them at our season launch in Sydney in March and to celebrate them in front of the football family as we welcome a new year for our game,” he said.

‘Bigger, Stronger and Faster:’ O’Sullivan Ready to Launch in Year Two

Tipped by his teammates as one to watch in 2025, Connor O’Sullivan has certainly put in the hard yards in preparation for his second year with Geelong

Connor O’Sullivan chats to Cats Media following Wednesday’s training session at GMHBA Stadium.

“A big thing for me is building on the experience that I was lucky to have last year at both AFL and VFL level,” O’Sullivan told Cats Media.

“I am trying to work on playing on more mature and bigger bodies, then working on my speed and power as well. That has been a big focus during my offseason.

“I have been trying to get my body right, trying to get through a full preseason. In your first year, it is more about building good habits and getting into a routine that suits you.

“This preseason has been about putting that into practice and seeing how I go, but it has been a really good preseason across the board for all the boys.”

Selected with the Cats top pick in the 2023 National Draft, O’Sullivan was touted as a unique player with the ability to play in multiple positions across the ground.

He certainly showed those abilities last year in the Cats VFL team last year spending time as a key defender, on the wing and even pushed forward to kick a few goals.

But 2025 seems to be a different outlook for O’Sullivan, with the emerging youngster noting that he has been spending plenty of time in defence throughout the preseason.

“Over the offseason the main focus for me has been working as a key defender,” O’Sullivan said.

“I am looking to build on the knowledge and the strengths of the other boys around me, hopefully to make me a better player as a result.

“Guys like Mark Blicavs, Jack Henry have helped but with the wealth of knowledge and experience amongst the group, you can lean on anybody and know you are going to get some good advice.

“I have been really lucky to have players to lean on that can really support me and help in my development.”

One of the most distinguished careers in Geelong’s AFLW history will continue into 2025, with captain Meg McDonald signing a one year contract extension.

Starting with the Cats in their inaugural season back in 2019, McDonald has been a key figure in Geelong’s defensive unit over the past seven seasons, making two All Australian team’s and winning a Cats best and fairest award.

But perhaps her greatest accolade has been captaining the team for five consecutive seasons, a position that is voted on by the Geelong playing group and recognises who they believe is the club’s strongest leader.

McDonald told K rock Drive this week that the process of electing a captain is important at Geelong, and that she understands what a privilege is to be selected by her peers.

Cats Recommit for 2025 >

The news added to the announcement late last year that superstar forward, Aishling Moloney had signed with the Cats for another three years, fresh off her record breaking 2024 season.

McDonald noted how exciting it is to secure Moloney’s services for the next few years, describing her as one of the most talented forwards she has ever seen.

“It is an honour each and every year to captain the side,” McDonald said.

“Our process every preseason for the five years that I have done it, we do a vote and the group decides who they think is the best person for the job.

“I think for the group it is important that they have their say, for the elected leader I think it is important that they feel like the group trusts them after being chosen by them.

“I have got another year of playing, if I captain or not I am not sure but we have some outstanding leaders coming through.”

“We had a crop that signed one year deals, but we had others who have signed on longer and more extensive deals,” McDonald said.

“Aishling Moloney was probably our biggest one, she signed a three year deal for the club which is great for us.

“She would have been the hottest property in the AFLW competition, it is mind blowing the talent and her rise from Irish recruit to one of the best players in the comp.

“I have played on some fantastic forwards and trained with some fantastic forwards, but she would have to be the number one for ‘thank goodness I don’t have to do this on game day.’”

Wollaston doubles up at Cadel’s race

A POOR start to the season has proved fuel to the fire for Ally Wollaston’s masterclass at the women’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race today (Saturday, February 1).

The New Zealand cycling star outsprinted a class front group to take out the 142.4km race that started and finished in Geelong.

It came less than three weeks after the new FDJ Suez recruit and her teammates were among several teams left red-faced at stage one of Adelaide’s Tour Down Under. On a day tailor-made for fast finishers such as Wollaston, Dutch rider Daniek Hengeveld won with a solo break that caught the sprinters’ teams napping.

This time, there were no mistakes.

Wollaston proved she is much more than just a sprinter, sticking with the leaders in the two ascents of the tough Challambra Hill climb that dominates the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

It is Wollaston’s first victory at UCI Women’s WorldTour level since winning stage one of last year’s Tour Down Under and follows her triumph on Wednesday at the Surf Coast Classic, making her the first rider to win both events in the same week.

“It could have gone one of two ways – we could have taken it really badly and been fed up, pissed off about the result. But the team really took it in our stride,” Wollaston said of the Tour Down Under.“Communication in the team has been really good since then.

“It was definitely fuel for the fire.

“We made a few mistakes in South Australia … it made us hungrier this week. We were all really motivated today.

”Dutch rider Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) was second and Swiss Noemi Ruegg (EF Education Oatly) took third after winning the Tour Down Under.

American star Chloe Dygert (Canyon Sram) was another pre-race favourite and finished fourth, surprisingly not unleashing her trademark turn of pace at the finish.

Amanda Spratt (Lidl Trek) was the only Australian in the front group and finished 13th after doing a power of work in the last few kilometres.

On the last climb up Challambra, with about 10km left, Wollaston knew she was a big chance when she stayed with Dygert.

“I wouldn’t actually say supercomfortable – it was really hard. But to make it over Challambra the second time, on Dygert’s wheel, I knew I was in with a good shot,” she said.

Wollaston has never done a full season on the road, winning a silver and bronze on the track at the Paris Olympics and then two world titles at the velodrome.

She joins Dutch star Demi Vollering, the No.1 recruit this season at FDJ Suez, and is rapt with her new team.

“We’ve grown so much, even in the space of two weeks,” she said.

“The team have a lot of confidence in me.

“Today proves I’m not just a sprinter – I don’t particularly enjoy hectic bunch sprints.

“So if I can figure out a way to be the strongest sprinter at the end of a really hard race, that’s the rider I hope to be.

”A series of crashes punctuated the second half of the race, with Australian Alyssa Polites (ARA national team) and Hengeveld (Ceratizit) among those to abandon.

Australian Neve Bradbury (Canyon Sram), one of the top riders in the field, was a late withdrawal this morning because of illness.

Compatriot Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla) is also out of the men’s 183.8km race tomorrow (Sunday, February 2).His team announced yesterday that Plapp’s domestic season has ended prematurely because of wrist surgery.

Time for some colouring in fun!

FEBRUARY 2025

geelong waterfront

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

poppy kettle playground

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is the one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

skate park geelong

Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.

cunningham pier

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong city skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events to up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendy lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

Geelong’s iconic waterfront function venue is perfect for every occasion. Experience the most unique function venue in Geelong.

the old paper mills geelong

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill once of Geelong’s historic places to visits. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

Fyansford Paper Mill once of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.

Geelong arts & Cultural precinct

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

western beach geelong

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

Geelong ripplesside park

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.

Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.

The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.

The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

steampacket gardens geelong

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

the carousel Geelong

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

Old geelong Gaol

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

Thinking about retirement? Somethings to consider before you do

RETIREMENT

At Find Retirement, we love helping people with their retirement needs. It is an exciting chapter in many people’s lives as they move from full-time work to spending more time with grandkids, travelling, playing a sport they love e.g., golf or lawn bowls, or simply having more time to work on that hobby or interest that has been sitting on the shelf for way to long.

Most often people decide to retire around the end of each financial year which is now only five months away. Can you believe January has already flown by? As such, we thought it would be timely to get those of you who are considering retirement this coming year to consider some important factors to ensure a smooth transition into your retirement years. Here’s a list of things to think about:

1. Retirement Goals & Lifestyle

• What kind of lifestyle do you want? Consider your desired activities, travel plans, hobbies, or where you want to live.

• Do you want to downsize? Many people opt to sell their homes and move to a smaller, more affordable place or relocate to a different area, perhaps even abroad.

• How will you spend your time? Having a plan for how to stay mentally and physically active can make a huge difference in postretirement satisfaction.

2. Retirement Savings and Income Needs

• How much money do you need to live comfortably? Make sure you’ve estimated your monthly and annual living expenses in retirement, accounting for things like housing, healthcare, food, travel, and entertainment.

• Are your retirement savings enough? This includes superannuation, investment properties, shares, or other investments. Ensure they’re aligned with your estimated retirement income needs.

• Have you accounted for inflation? Over time, the cost of goods and services will likely rise. Your plan should factor in potential increases in prices over the next 20-30 years.

3. Social Security and Pension Benefits

• When should you start claiming Social Security? For many people you will only be able to claim the age pension when you reach age 67 and this is subject to the amount of assets you own (not including the house). For others, it may be years before you can claim the age pension, if at all, until your assets fall below the upper threshold asset test.

• Do you have an allocated pension (from your own superannuation monies)? If so, understand when you can start collecting and how much you’ll receive.

• Will your spouse’s benefits impact yours? If married, coordinating Social Security and pension benefits with your spouse can increase your lifetime income.

4. Healthcare and Insurance

• What’s your plan for healthcare? Should you continue to pay for private health care? The costs can be quite prohibitive but for some people who have acute health care needs, cancelling this type of insurance may not be an option.

• How will you handle long-term care costs? Nursing homes, assisted living, or in-home care can be expensive. Plan ahead for how you’ll cover these potential costs. Given money to your children is not always the wisest move given you might need to pay a refundable accommodation deposit (RAD) in the future.

• Are you prepared for out-of-pocket costs? Even with Medicare, there are deductibles, premiums, and co-pays. Plan for these potential gaps.

• Should you continue to pay life insurance premiums? If you have no debt and a suitable amount of assets in retirement, you should consider whether to continue paying high premiums or use these funds to help cover future lifestyle expenses.

5. Taxes in Retirement

• How will taxes impact your retirement income? Understand how withdrawals from pension accounts will be taxed.

• Will you need to submit a tax return? If you earn $1 of income from non-tax-free sources you may need to submit a tax return, even if no tax is payable. Don’t leave it up to your estate to have to prepare lots of returns on your behalf.

• Have you paid off high-interest debt? Ideally, you should try to pay off as much debt as possible before retirement, especially credit cards or other high-interest loans.

• Do you have a mortgage? Consider whether you want to pay off your mortgage before retiring or if you’re comfortable carrying it into retirement.

• Are there any other financial obligations? Things like student loans, personal loans, or family support might need to be factored into your retirement budget.

7. Investment Strategy

• How should you adjust your investment portfolio as you approach retirement? Consider shifting your portfolio from high-risk assets (like stocks) to more stable investments (like fixed interest ETFs) to reduce the risk of major losses.

• Understand your withdrawal obligations? Most people do not realise you have to withdrawal minimum amounts from your pension account. As you get older this amount increases over time.

• How much risk are you comfortable taking? Think about your tolerance for market volatility and whether you’re okay with potential ups and downs in your investment value.

8. Emergency Fund

• Do you have an emergency fund? Ideally, this should be separate from your retirement savings. Having 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses set aside can give you peace of mind in case of unforeseen circumstances (medical emergencies, unexpected repairs, etc.).

9. Estate Planning

• Do you have an updated will or trust? Make sure your will or trust is in place to specify how your assets should be distributed.

• Have you chosen a power of attorney and healthcare proxy? These documents ensure someone you trust can make medical or financial decisions on your behalf if you’re incapacitated.

• What are your estate tax implications? Some estate planning may be necessary to minimize taxes for your heirs, particularly if you have a larger estate.

10. Part-Time Work or Volunteering

• Do you want to keep working parttime? Many retirees enjoy working part-time or consulting to stay active and generate income.

• Are you interested in volunteering? Giving back to the community can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment post-retirement. If any of you love writing articles then talk to me about the Find Foundation (yes, that was cheeky place that in here).

11. Mental and Emotional Readiness

• Are you emotionally prepared for retirement? Transitioning from a work identity to retirement can be challenging. Think about how you’ll stay socially engaged and mentally stimulated. Males find it harder to transition from work to retirement because work has been their whole life. Having a network of friends who are also moving into retirement or having specific goals can help with the transition.

• What will your daily routine look like? Having a structured daily routine can help avoid the potential feeling of boredom or loss of purpose.

12. Review and Adjust Your Plan

• Do you have a retirement plan in place? Regularly review your retirement plan to ensure it’s still on track, especially if you experience major life changes (e.g., health issues, job changes, or changes in the economy).

• Are you prepared to adjust your lifestyle if needed? Flexibility is key. Economic changes, healthcare costs, or other factors may require you to adjust your plans in retirement.

13.

Legacy and Giving Back

• What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Think about charitable contributions, setting up college funds for grandchildren, or passing down values to your family.

• Do you want to leave something for your heirs? If so, make sure your estate plan reflects these wishes.

Taking the time to consider these factors well before retirement can lead to a smoother, more secure transition, and a more enjoyable retirement overall. Do any of these stand out to you as areas you’re still unsure about or need more info on?

At Find Retirement,we would love to help you on your retirement journey. Give us a call on 1300 88 38 30 or email warren@ findretirement.com.au and book in a time to discuss your retirement needs.
