About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch
The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.
Resources Exports Soar Towards New Record Informal import restrictions by China have seen thermal coal miners pivot to other customers hit by the very cold northern hemisphere winter. Thermal coal exports fell from 213 million tonnes in 2019/20 to a forecast 194 million tonnes in 2020/21, but are expected to recover to 212 million tonnes by 2022/23 as Asian economies recover. Thermal coal export values are forecast to be $17 billion in 2021/22, down from $20 billion in 2019/20. Paul Osborne (Australian Associated Press)
Australia’s resources and energy exports are expected to hit $334 billion in the next financial year, a new study shows. The federal industry department’s Resources and Energy Quarterly report released on Monday said commodity prices had gained momentum in the first half of 2021. Iron ore, LNG, thermal coal and base metals have reached multi-year highs.
In 2020/21, Australia’s resources and energy exports are estimated to reach $310 billion, up more than six per cent on the record set in 2019/20. This figure is forecast to rise to $334 billion in 2021/22. Iron ore export earnings are estimated to rise by 45 per cent to $149 billion in 2020/21, accounting for almost half of Australia’s resources and energy exports. Australian metallurgical coal miners are benefiting from a surge in world steel production.
LNG export earnings are forecast to increase from an estimated $33 billion in 2020/21 to $49 billion in 2021/22. However, an easing of global economic growth and softer prices are expected to result in total resources export earnings dropping to $304 billion in 2022/23. “Australia’s energy and resources sector has remained safe and reliable suppliers to domestic and global markets throughout the pandemic, helping to underpin economic growth and overcome the challenging trade conditions of the past year,” Resources Minister Keith Pitt said. Deforestation Caused By Extreme Weather Events NATURE & CONSERVATION By Liz Sanzaro
Our recent disaster has many people blaming trees. A knee jerk reaction is to remove any that appear to threaten your property without expert arborist inspection. This may not be the best idea. Just over 12 months ago we got our first taste of extraordinary winds. They went through sections of the outer east and the Dandenong ranges. We saw how devastating this could be with the old Golf Links estate adjacent to Dorset road taking the full force and mature canopy trees fell across gardens powerlines and in some cases houses. It is not melodramatic to suggest that repeat events like this will result in deforestation, demonstrating to us the effects of Climate change. As the gales of wind hit, they find opportunities like gullies and ridge peaks where they can gather speed. Trees even those 100 years old stand no chance against 200 km per Hr winds from a generally unusual direction. Unlike European trees Eucalypts do not have a long tap root, but are surface rooted in a thin layer of forest litter and soil where they can absorb the most rainfall. They do this around the drip line, which is just like an umbrella that drips around the perimeter. With trees this is the outside edge of their canopy. This is why the tree protection zone should never be impacted by buildings, vehicles or any other covering that prevents rain from entering the ground. Once the first trees fall so will the adjacent ones like dominos. As trees grow from saplings, they are supported by nearby ones much like penguins gather in clusters to keep warm. Take out a few penguins amongst the cluster and others are vulnerable to natural forces. Tree colonies are very similar. This latest enormous loss has left the remaining trees very vulnerable to collapse. After last year’s loss, this latest event has taken out trees that were left vulnerable; they have now succumbed. Parts of the ranges are totally flattened. Many Councils have lent a hand and have their tree experts, assessing the trees left to see if they are dangerous. Some residents will be thinking that any tree within 50 meters of their house should be removed. These people are probably
Image courtesy of Brisbane times better off leaving the area and living elsewhere. It is perfectly understandable that they don’t wish to experience a repeat performance. However, those who are prepared to live among trees while also paying higher insurance fees will understand how important the trees are. Trees are our lungs, they are carbon sinks absorbing CO2, they modify temperature both hot and cold, they provide habitat for birds of all kinds from king parrots to kookaburras and tiny wrens. In the under storey are lyre birds, wombats, echidnas,
kangaroos, lizards and a myriad of other creatures that we value highly. Their roots also stabilise the land helping prevent land slip or erosion. Ensuring regeneration of the ranges is the next challenge, after removal of tonnes of debris that, if left to dry out, will become perfect fuel for any fire. Putting power underground is also a timely method of ensuring power is not so vastly affected in future, and this is being done in some locations where the entire power grid is so badly damaged that it must be totally rebuilt.

Once this disaster is in hand, replanting will be necessary, including in Maroondah. We are lucky to have two native Nurseries, CRISP in Greenwood Avenue Ringwood and Candlebark Nursery on the corner of Hull road and Taylors road Mooroolbark, just uphill from the CFA. These two nurseries grow plants from local species through seed collection. People who work at these nurseries are volunteers with great knowledge to assist you in making suitable choices for your property. There are trees that do not grow too tall, above the roof line, and a variety of other plants to choose from. If you have a nearby reserve you can join in planting, the best contact for being included is Derek who can point you to a reserve near you. With the new changes about to take place, employers will need to get their heads around these new laws. Key points of new legislation:
By Warren Strybosch
Australia’s superannuation system is set to change again from 1 July 2021, with a set of reforms that aim to increase retirement savings and target unnecessary fees. The ‘Your Future, Your Super’ reforms, now law, are to come into play at 1st November this year, and will help to reduce the number of super funds being set up by employers for their new employees.
In the past, when people would move to new employment, the new employer was able to set up a new super fund even if the employer supplied them with the Standard Super Choice form. I know, it should not happen, but this had happened to me even after I supplied the Choice form twice to two different people within the same company albeit about 10 years ago. I basically lost $800 over a 12-month period from fees and

To prevent unnecessary multiple super accounts, new accounts won’t be automatically created when people change jobs

This impacts how businesses onboard new employees, depending on whether they make a choice of super fund

There are six million multiple super accounts held by 4.4 million people – this equates to $450 million in unnecessary fees as a result of these multiple accounts

cause as well as from all types of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer and lung cancer.
Low exercise, poor sleep raise health blow (Australian Associated Press)
The combination of poor sleep and lack of exercise is a double whammy that’s putting people at great risk of developing life-threatening diseases, according to a University of Sydney study. The large long-term study that’s published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on Wednesday, found “a likely synergy between physical activity and sleep”. Both physical inactivity and poor sleep have independently been associated with a heightened risk of death and cardiovascular disease and cancer, but it hasn’t been clear if they might have a combined effect on health. “We found those who had both the poorest sleep quality and who exercised the least were were most at risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and cancer,” lead author and PhD candidate Bo-Huei Huang said.
Senior author and research program director, Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis said the research was particularly pertinent because “sadly, our society suffers from both a physical inactivity and a poor sleep crisis”. “Considering that physical activity is perhaps more modifiable than sleep, our study offers people more health incentives to be physically active and provides health professionals with more reasons to prescribe physical activity to patients with sleep problems,” he said. The researchers drew on information provided by 380,055 middle-aged men and women taking part in the UK Biobank study the long the long-term health of more than half a million 37 to 73-yearolds, who were recruited between 2006 and 2010. Participants’ health was tracked for an average of 11 years up to May 2020 or death, to assess their risk of dying from any
Those who were younger, female, had lower body mass index, were better off financially, ate more fruit and vegetables, spent less of their day seated, had no mental health issues, never smoked, didn’t work shifts, drank less alcohol and were more physically active tended to have healthier sleep scores. The lower the sleep score, the higher were the risks of death from any cause, from all types of cardiovascular disease, and from ischaemic stroke. Compared with those with the high physical activity and healthy sleep score combination, those at the other end of the scale, with the no moderate to vigorous physical activity and poor sleep combination, had the highest risks of death from any cause (57 per cent higher). They also had the highest risk of death from any type of cardiovascular disease (67 per cent higher), from any type of cancer (45 per cent higher), and from lung cancer (91 per cent higher). Lower levels of physical activity amplified the unfavourable associations between poor sleep and all health outcomes, except for stroke. The researchers concluded that physical activity levels at or above the WHO guideline threshold “eliminated most of the deleterious associations of poor sleep with mortality”. The findings lend weight to efforts to target both physical activity and sleep quality in a bid to improve health.
Casuals Will Soon Be Able To Get Super Even If They Earn Under $450 Per Month By Warren Strybosch
It doesn’t matter whether you have a full time, part-time or casual job, if you’re over 18 and you earn more than $450* (before tax) in a calendar month, your employer should pay super contributions for you. If you’re paid an award wage and earn less than $450* per month, your employer may have to pay super for you, but some organisations don’t have to. For more information, go to the Australian Tax Office’s (ATO’s) Employee superannuation guarantee (SG) calculator tool. If you are under 18 and working less than 30 hours a week and earning less than $450*, your employer does not have to make superannuation contributions for you. *Note: The Government has announced it plans to remove the $450 minimum income threshold for super contributions, but this is not yet law.

Mortgage Brokers & Financial Institutions Top The Complaints List In 2021
By Warren Strybosch
Home loan issues and credit cards related to lending were the most complained about product issues for the financial year ending 2021, according to AFCA. A lot of this issues stemmed from responsible lending issues; in otherwards, there were irresponsible decisions made by brokers and lending institutions and consumers suffered. In 2021, according to the external dispute resolution scheme, there were 70,150 complaints, with over 40 per percent made about credit products. This is a substantial increase compared to previous years. This may be due in part
to the fact that consumers are becoming more aware of their rights under ‘best duty’ and/or responsible lending. Also, with AFCA doing their road shows in 2020 and making people aware of their services, this may have been a contributing factor to increased complaints in these areas. Issues with mortgages were high up on the complaint list, comprising 9 per cent of all credit product complaints, making them the second-most commonly complained about credit products, after credit cards. According to AFCA, after default listing issues, the four most commonly received credit complaints related to:
• • • •
Financial firms failing to respond to requests for assistance (2,678 complaints) Service quality (2,554 complaints) Incorrect fees/costs being charged (1,894 complaints) Responsible lending (1,698 complaints)

Smsf And 6 Member Funds – An Australian Taxation Office’s Interim Solution To Add The 5th And 6th Member By Warren Strybosch
SMSF can now have up to six (6) members after the Treasury Laws Amendment (Self Managed Superannuation Funds) Bill 2020 received royal assent on 22 June 2021. This measure was first announced by the Government back in the 2018 Budget, and has only just received Royal Assent a few weeks ago. As such, the ATO does not currently have the Australian Business Register (ABR) system updates to allow SMSFs to register more than four members or to add a fifth or sixth member. Given the possible need for some SMSF to want to add more than four members, albeit a very unlikely occurrence given about 93% of current SMSF only have 1 or 2 members, the ATO has developed an interim solution, to allow additional members to be registered. SMSFs will need to follow existing processes to register a new SMSF through the ABR, to include members one to four. Trustees will then be required to lodge with the ATO, a paper “Change of Details for superannuation entities form” (NAT3036) to provide the details of member(s) five and/or six. Once processed, the ATO will update their systems to allow members to request rollovers into their SMSF. Once the ABR functionality caters for the law change, the ATO will proceed to update an SMSFs details, with no further action required from the trustee(s). It is important to acknowledge that the need for manual intervention by the ATO does raise the risk that impacted SMSFs may face delays in registering their fund or additional members. For this reason, the ATO is encouraging SMSFs to wait till the ABR is updated. Where possible, this may be a sensible option. For more information from the ATO, Click here to visit their website.

Work-Related Expenses On ATO Radar Amid Spike In People Working From Home ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch
It is tax time again and accounting firms are busy sending out tax checklists or making contact with their clients to start the process of completing last year’s financial returns. This year, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has announced that they will be taking particular note of work-related expenses, especially those associated with working from home. Last financial year over 8.5 million people claimed nearly $19.4 billion in work-related expenses and it is expected this to be significantly larger for 2021. Australian Taxation Office assistant commissioner Tim Loh says the COVID-19 pandemic has changed people’s work habits, so he expects their work-related expenses will reflect this. “We know many people started working from home during COVID-19, so a jump in these claims is expected,” Loh said. “But, if you are working at home, we would not expect to see claims for travelling between worksites, laundering uniforms or business trips.” Many people do not realise but the ATO has sophisticated software that can compare everyone’s expenses against other people working in the same industry. If one person has an expense that falls outside of the ATO’s deemed parameters as to what is considered reasonable to claim, then expect a ‘please explain’ from the ATO.
As an accountant, I remember receiving one of these phones calls a few years back because one of our clients was lecturing and it was his second income. As such, the client did not nominate the tax-free threshold and elected to pay more tax from his income. The ATO rang to discuss why this particular client had more tax withheld compared to his counterparts at the same university. After a brief explanation and having to send in documents to verify the tax withheld was legitimate, the ATO processed the return. You see, everyone else within the organisation had elected the tax-free threshold and so this particular client’s income and tax withheld figures did not match everyone else and set off a flag to the ATO to investigate. Many accountants are now asking for proof e.g., invoices or receipts, when it comes to certain expenses. Other accountants are asking clients to sign an expense declaration if receipts cannot be produced. At the end of the day, you are responsible for any claims you make to try and reduce the amount of tax payable. “We will also look closely at anyone with significant working from home expenses, that maintains or increases their claims for things like car, travel or clothing expenses. Don’t consider just cutting and pasting what you claimed last year into this year’s return,” Loh said.
9
the expenses must directly relate to earning your income you must have a record to prove it (usually a receipt).
If the expense was for both work and private purposes, you only claim a deduction for the work-related part. Work expenses your employer reimburses you for are not deductible. If the ATO thinks your employer has reimbursed you for your expenses, they might decide to ask them. You may be able to claim a deduction for expenses you incur that relate to your work, including: • • • • • •
Vehicle and travel expenses Clothing, laundry and dry-cleaning expenses Working from home expenses Self-education expenses Tools, equipment and other assets Other work-related deductions
Employees (including casuals) can claim work-related expenses in the income year you incur them. This means if you start employment in June you can claim deductions for work-related expenses you incur in June. Even if you don’t receive your employment income until the next income year. If you employ someone to assist you in your employment, generally you can’t claim a deduction for employing that person.
At Find Accountant, we provide SMSF tax advice. Our senior accountant is also an award-winning financial advisor. If you require SMSF advice or are considering whether or not to wind up your SMSF, then speak to Warren Strybosch at Find Accountant Pty Ltd.

Do You Know How To Build Your Team’s Resilience? RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe
YEP, it’s a buzz word but the fact is, resilience is the determining factor for the success of your team... and your business. Resilience is built through attitude and through behaviour that must be lived and demonstrated. It is the ability to positively respond to pressure, to overcome adversity and it has a whole lot to do with both the mental and physical wellbeing of your team. A highly resilient team will adapt to change more effectively and will have less stressed- and burned-out employees. Some people will naturally be more resilient than others, some will need to develop it with intentional practise. The great news is resilience can be learnt and as a business you can set the tone and put processes in place to keep your team thriving and building resilience.
But how do you know how resilient your business is and how do you know who in your team is more naturally resilient and who may require that extra support?
Therefore, culture improves the bottom line of the business, creating much more financial success; because of having a positive and thriving culture.
The culture that you have created is a direct reflection of how resilient you have built your business because in the work environment, a big part of resilience comes down to the leadership and the support offered.
A supportive culture will build resilience; a higher ability to overcome challenges, more chance of ‘bouncing back’.
So, let’s look at how your culture is fairing. The culture is made up of the energy that the people bring, it’s the attitude that they have, it’s the style that the business has, the ethos of the business, the intangible stuff that you can’t really touch. Although you can’t touch it, it makes a massive impact on the experience that the team has inside the business, and a huge impact of the experience that all the customers have. Customers return when they feel they’ve had a great experience.
A great culture also really determines what kind of people work inside the organisation. If you have a crappy culture, you’re not going to attract high performers or really great people because they won’t want to work in a crappy culture. If you have a great culture, you will have a business that does attract high performing people. If you have more high performing people, your business is going to do better. Great culture... Higher resilience factor... Business doing better... Greater bottom line. Crappy culture... Lower resilience factor... Less success... Lower bottom line.
findgeelong.com.au
JULY 2021 | FIND GEELONG
The culture begins with the leader as it is the leader that determines the mission of the business, the vision of the business and most importantly, the values of the organisation. Not many businesses truly have values that they consciously live, work, hire and fire by. It is the values that determine the experience that both staff and clients have, and they also determine that standards by which the business lives and breathes. This is the essence of the culture. Why is it that you can have two coffee shops over the road from each other and one is successful, and one isn’t? Probably not because of the coffee... it’s likely because of the experience... which is the culture, which is determined by the values, standards, attitude, mission, and vision.... the intangibles. A great culture will support their people, they will have systems and processes in place that build up their team. They will empower the people inside of their organisation to step up to new levels of leadership... this empowerment builds resilience. A powerful support system will build resilience in your team. Some people will need more focus and support than others. Typically, if a team member is more confident in their abilities and/or more disciplined in their approach they may be more naturally resilient. However, these people may also
simply ‘push through’ at challenging times, seemingly holding their head high... but dissolving beneath the surface. Perhaps they need more social or family support at this time? The best way to determine a team members resilience factor is to simply ask... What?... Just ask?? Yep. Harvard Business Review states - “One of the first things you can do is establish a “resilience inventory dashboard” Check in 1 by 1 with your team and simply ask 1. How comfortable are you (insert obstacle or task here)?
11
The World Health Organisation states that over a quarter of people say that work is their #1 stressor! Setting up a culture of excellence means that you are setting up a culture of trust. When people feel trust, they feel valued, they feel strength, they build resilience. These team players are more likely to contribute to the overall success of your business. It’s now more important than ever to build a resilient culture to effectively support your team and ensure longevity of your business.
If you’re looking to build a resilient culture in your business and would like support around this, reach out for a chat
2. How do you plan/schedule your workdays? 3. How can I support you with any life or family commitments.” Seek out answers and provide support as necessary. Wills, Powers of Attorney and Estate Planning Does your business also need to be covered in a Will?
As difficult as it is to think about, we don’t want to leave the hard decisions to our families when they are grieving or suffering with our demise. Having a valid and accurate Will and other documents in place will alleviate a lot of the unnecessary concerns for the loved ones that we leave behind.
(proprietor) by application to the Land Title’s Office. But often where there is superannuation or life insurance, registrations and other matters that need to be dealt with, and appointing an executor gives them the power to act once you have passed away. Even though Probate may not be warranted given the size of the Estate, not having a Will can create difficulties for surviving relatives in dealing with Superannuation Funds and Insurance firms where policies are held in the name of the deceased.
A valid and effective Will is one that is tailored completely to you and your family needs that ensures the protection of your assets so that they pass to the beneficiaries that you intend.
To write a Will you should choose an executor who is capable and who you trust to carry out the activities required to deal with organisations and distribute your estate.
If you do not have a Will, your assets may end up with those people (for example, an ex-spouse) that you did not want to receive a benefit as you have not activated your right to say who receives your property after you die. The absence of a Will may cause expensive and timeconsuming court proceedings to be conducted to distribute your assets and creates the serious potential for family disputes - all of which could have been avoided with a valid Will.
Choosing the right executor?
Estate planning for family businesses involves a complete consideration of assets and liabilities, ownership structures and insurances to ensure that the transfer and control of assets are managed to maximise the benefit to the deceased’s estate and beneficiaries. It is important and useful to update this assets and liabilities list on a regular basis so it can be easily identifiable when you need to update your Will.
LAWYERS By John Van Beveren
A Will allows you to allocate your assets however you like – whether it is to give the whole of your estate to one or more beneficiaries in equal shares or other portions. If applicable, you can also nominate a guardian for any children to ensure they have someone that you trust to look after them when you are no longer here. You can even ask someone to look after your pet! At the same time as drafting your Will, we highly recommend that you also put in place documents that plan for any future incapacity. Powers of Attorney and Appointment of Medical Decision Maker documents ensure that if, for some reason, you become unable to make decisions about your finances, your medical treatment or living arrangements, then the person or persons who you appoint in these documents will have the power to make such decisions on your behalf without hinderance of other people.
Does the size of the Estate matter? Although small Estates do not generally require an application for Probate, we recommend that everyone who has superannuation, life insurance and assets have a valid Will that in the least appoints an executor to manage the distribution of your estate. In cases where the major asset is the family home and it is held in joint names of spouses, it can be transferred to the surviving spouse
When you are thinking of writing a Will, you should choose an executor who is capable and who you trust to carry out the activities required to deal with organisations and distribute your estate. If you do not make a Will and thus have not chosen an executor, the court will pick one for you — and it may not be the person you would want to take care of your important affairs after your passing. Where a person does not have a Will, a grant of letters of administration needs to be applied for to lawfully handle your estate. The process of obtaining a grant of letters of administration is more onerous than that require for a grant of probate as the person applying needs to prove that they are the suitable person, whereas the appointment of an executor in a Will removes this requirement.
Do you have a Self-Managed Superfund (SMSF)? Superannuation is not automatically part of your personal estate, even if you hold a self-managed fund. Superannuation is held in a trust on behalf of the beneficiaries of which you are one and it is not yours to own. The Superannuation trustee decides who receives the benefits of the fund. We have found that many clients are the trustees or directors for the trustees of their (deliberate tautology follows) own self-managed superfund and this can cause issues when the trustee dies. Compliance for Self-Managed Super Funds requires the trustee to take all necessary steps to ensure continual management of the fund given possible reasons for disruption including incapacity or death of a trustee. Mitigating such risk requires Estate planning (ie Wills and Powers of Attorney) to be in place to ensure the management of the fund in a situation where one or more trustees become incapacitated or die.
Complications can also arise with deciding who has the responsibility to continue the family’s legacy when it comes to managing business operations. These complications can be resolved through effective estate planning. One of the most common forms is to ensure the right of ownership and control are dealt with in a Will.
To ensure smooth and successful operations of a business after the death of a business owner, it essential that key roles and responsibilities are assigned to other people on the event of the death of a business owner. It is also important to make sure that the names of the people who have crucial roles and responsibilities are kept up to date, especially as family dynamics change or when a key family member dies.
When would I need to review and change my Will? You should review your Will every 2-3 years and change it after any major life event occurring. After a major life event your Will may become invalid or it may no longer reflect your wishes. Life events include: getting married or divorced, having children, buying or selling property, starting a business or the death of a named executor or beneficiary. At Van Beveren Lawyers we can help determine when and whether your Will should be updated. If you need to review your Will and want professional advice, or even create a new Will, then contact our compassionate team at Van Beveren Lawyers. Yet there are other reasons.
The Best Times to Paint Your House
You may be moving into a house that needs a bit of a refresh and a change of colour scheme, to suit your preferences. This is particularly handy to do before you move your furniture in. You may have been living i n your house for a little while, and simply feel like a change. Or, if you’ve had young kids, your walls could well be marked, and showing a little wear and tear. (There’s certainly nothing quite like the scuff marks from toys and the odd crayon disaster!) Minimising disruption
PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof
Painting your house can seem like a massive undertaking, and one that you’d simply rather avoid. Yet, with your house most likely being your biggest asset, a fresh coat of paint not only increases its value, but also protects it from weather damage and more. Let’s look at when you might consider painting, and how you might manage it. Exterior Painting If you own a weatherboard house for any length of time, painting is clearly going to become a fairly regular, and highly essential, maintenance task. While you may be able to get away with only painting once every 10 years or so, often, it’s far cheaper and easier to repaint before the existing paint starts to diminish or deteriorate. Once your existing paint starts flaking off for instance, your weatherboards will need a lot more prior preparation to ensure a quality finish. And if you live on a coastline, being hammered by salt and sea spray, you’ll clearly be wanting to paint far more often. Brick houses may not require quite as much attention, but many old properties may still have timber window frames, and more modern houses sometimes have timber features. These also will need regular attention to keep them looking great. And don’t forget to regularly check your paintwork close up! Sometimes you won’t see the first signs of paint deterioration with that quick glance as you run out the door on a daily basis. You need to take the time to inspect it properly.
Interior Painting Interior painting tends to be more of an aesthetic consideration as opposed to protection. However, there are times when it does become imperative to paint, to protect the integrity of your walls and plaster. Your bathroom in particular needs good ventilation, but in older homes, there’s a good chance you may end up with mould and mildew in spots, such as over the shower, that really benefit from a good scrub and repaint. Otherwise though, repainting your interior is a great way of freshening up the feel and look of your home. Colour trends have certainly changed over the years. Where once darker colours and shades of beige, or ‘mission brown’ might have trended – these days, it’s generally about being fresh and light. Particularly, if you’re keen to sell. That said, a splash of colour on a feature wall can really enhance certain spaces and complement your individual personality. Painting can be highly modernising your property.
effective
at
When painting the exterior of your house, it’s best to do it BEFORE winter. You clearly can’t paint, or achieve a quality finish, if it’s too cold for the paint to dry, blowing a gale (and blowing dust around) or pouring with rain. Getting your interiors painted can be even trickier though, as it can cause some major disruption for a week or two. You’ll need to be able to move furniture off the walls, and either get items out of the house, or ensure they’re well covered. If you have a holiday planned, then it makes sense to get it done while you’re away. That way you don’t need to be tip-toing around wet paint and dodging the painters and their equipment. Failing that, you could see if you can stay with family or friends for a week. If however, removing yourself from the house just isn’t possible, a good professional painting company should be able to work with you to come up with a schedule to minimise disruption to you and your family. But let’s face it, a freshly painted house, can be well worth a week or two’s disruption.
Add value, add personality or get ready to sell Clearly, the number one reason for painting, particularly internally, is to freshen things up before you sell your property. Often, buyers are more likely to fall in love with a home, and are more likely to pay higher prices, if you use fairly neutral tones and give your home a more modern look. Lighter shades provide a feeling of space, light and the ability for an owner to view it as a blank canvas, that they can customise to their tastes.

General
Insurance? GENERAL INSURANCE By Nicole Nelson
Life is full of risks. That’s what makes it so interesting and exciting. But some unexpected events can really set you back. General insurance helps us protect ourselves and the things we value, such as our homes, our cars and our valuables, from the financial impact of risks, big and small – from fire, flood, storm and earthquake, to theft, car accidents, travel mishaps and even from the costs of legal action against us. And we can choose the types of risks we wish to cover by choosing the right kind of policy with the features we need. In general, insurance works by spreading the cost of unexpected risks among a large number of people in the same region who share similar risks. When you take out an insurance policy, you pay a monthly or annual premium. That money joins the premiums of many thousands of other policyholders and goes into a big pool of funds. With any luck, you will never need to draw on that pool. But if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones affected by an unexpected calamity, perhaps through severe weather or accident, that pool of funds can be used to help you up to the limit you have selected in your policy.
If things go wrong, your insurer may either repair or replace the items that have been lost or damaged, depending on the terms of your policy. You may also have the choice of receiving a cash settlement for the amount of money agreed in your policy.

How To Shake Off Haters!
VIDEO CONSULTANT By Zoë Wood
Trying new things for your brand (such as video marketing) can be terrifying, not just because of the time, effort, and money to get started. The number one fear that all my clients have shared with me is the fear of negative comments or BACKLASH! The idea that your videos, podcasts, blogs, or other marketing adventures will draw the attention of anonymous, nasty, and mean-spirited individuals. Why even attempt it if the risk is that high?! Well, it’s not as big of a risk as your brain might make it out to be. Here’s why: We know intuitively that any comment, whether it be online or face-to-face, is unlikely to hurt us materially. So why does it feel like it could? Why is the impact of one negative sentence never forgotten, even when weighed against the ten positive or glowing reviews? This is called Negativity bias or the Negativity effect. A quirk of human psychology where negative stimuli, such as unpleasant thoughts or stressful social interactions, have a far greater effect on our mental health and wellbeing than neutral or positive things of the same nature. It has been theorized that humans evolved this bias because it kept our ancestors safe. Safe from dangerous situations such as poisonous food sources, social ostracisation, or in-fighting. Our brains catalogue our negative memories of events,
situations, and emotions to protect us from repeating mistakes that would lead to further harm. This survival instinct has remained with us through to the present day. Your brain is trying to protect itself from perceived harm, even if that perceived harm is less poisonous snake and more keyboard warrior. Let me leave you with a good mental exercise, for when you come across Haters. They ultimately fall into two camps: meanies/bullies and hecklers. The meanies or bullies are just that. They are anonymous, they comment rude, factually incorrect, or flat-out false things in order to elicit a reaction, like the playground bully. Thanks to the internet, you can take these 3 simple steps to remove them from your life forever. Mute, report, block. Mute is removing their comment from your video. Reporting is flagging their account as harmful. Blocking is stopping them from commenting on your content again in future. The other camp are hecklers: people who may not be wrong in their comment. However, they don’t have the full picture or may have a misguided view that isn’t constructive. You are free to respond to clarify your points. You may even have a constructive conversation in the comments that boosts your engagement rate, which could have a positive impact on your social media presence. You can also remove the comment and move on. That’s your call.
Ultimately, the reason you are embarking on this new marketing journey is not for your small business, community group, or charity. It’s for your audience, your clients, and your potential customers that need to hear your message. That’s it. Any negativity that is not constructive, is just that: negativity. Are they helping their community? Are they serving your community? Are they willing to put time, effort, or money into creating helpful resources for the community? Probably not. So just remember, you are there for your audience and that’s all that matters. See our up-coming video on a stepby-step guide on dealing with haters, by searching Video Confidence Coach on YouTube. Just remember; haters are gonna hate, just shake it off, shake it off!

Now you can turn your attention to other areas in your business while your webpage can do “its thing”. Great, what is “its thing”? Be specific. A webpages thing can vary depending on your business needs. Some things may include; •
Is your webpage a sales brochure intended to generate leads?
•
An informational resource for distributing critical information to internal staff or clients?
•
Or perhaps your webpage is an ecommerce platform intended to generate retail sales?
How will your webpages thing, or things discovered above be measured? •

Will they be counted manually every time you receive an inbound enquiry byemail, telephone or purchase transactions? Are there automated systems you could implement to help you track them? Are those systems tracking relevant and measurable metrics?
SMART goals are a simple but powerful tool that can help anyone achieve more with less.
submit an enquiry? complete a purchase? access key informational material?
Now that we have a specific understanding of what our thing or things are, how they’re going to be measured and achieved, now is a good time to make sure all these things are relevant and support your business goals. Write a few sentences describing your business goals, and how each thing or things discovered above will support them. Understanding what our webpages specific outcomes are, how to measure them, how they will be achieved and ensuring they are relevant are great, but lastly, what good are they if you don’t set a time frame to deliver them within? Do You Own A Business And Want To Help Employees Save $$$?
SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls
We are regularly approached by people asking if they can offer salary packaging to current or potential employees of their organisation. In my article this month I’d like to explore the types of organisations that can offer salary packaging. ANY organisation with Pay As You Go (PAYG) employees can have a salary packaging program. Given this broad definition you should definitely consider establishing a program so that employees can benefit from any available tax savings. A properly run program comes with ZERO cost to the organisation as all fees and expenses are paid by the employees, out of their pre-tax income. A business can be of any size and type, the defining factor is whether there are PAYG employees. We currently have programs with organisations with 1 employee up to thousands of employees. A modern and flexible salary packaging program assists an organisation to recruit, reward and retain employees, which is particularly critical with current labour challenges. If you currently run an organisation, then you should talk to us about setting up or modernising a program. We make it very
easy as we can do everything for you so all you need to do is contact us. There are no minimums, no commitment. Once we show employees how they can save tax, they quickly become customers!
Using The Salary Packaging People adds an extra compelling ingredient, we are right on your doorstep and readily available to sit down and discuss your requirements in person.
The Fringe Benefit Tax status of an organisation dictates what benefits are available to employees. If you don’t know your tax status, we can quickly check it for you and let you know what structure works best. We will then visit you and your employees, explain the program and do all the required paperwork. It really is a WIN WIN WIN for you, your organisation and your employees.
These should be compelling reasons for any organisation; we look forward to helping you establish a salary packaging program.
Depending on your FBT status, your employees may be able to package everyday living expenses like their mortgage, rent, credit card or household costs. They can also lease and run a car through their salary and may potentially save thousands in tax by doing so.
KEY TAKEAWAY Any organisation with employees paid through PAYG can offer salary packaging, regardless of their size and structure. This allows employees to potentially save thousands of dollars in tax every year and at no cost to the organisation.
If you have any questions relating to this or any other aspect of salary packaging please do not hesitate to contact us on 03 5229 4200.
Why? The reasons an organisation would offer salary packaging are simple:• Give employees the choice to structure their salary with non-cash benefits • Give employees access to potentially save thousands of dollars in tax • Be an employer of choice – be on a level playing field with larger organisations • Recruit and retain employees easier • Potentially reduce workcover premiums

Is it time for a HABITS audit? How healthy are your habits? pattern of medium complexity, such as waking up early. Changing and developing these types of new, small habits will change your life in a big way. (Brian Tracey) We all have a combination of both healthy and unhealthy habits. A habits’ audit enables us to really assess our habits and their quality and provides us with information regarding whether we need to make some adjustments and amendments. What is a Habits Audit?
LIFE COACH & COUNSELLING By Lou Lugsdin
Habits are things we do consistently, consciously, and subconsciously! They are so automatic, that sometimes we are not even aware of them or that we are doing them. Because our habits just happen, often without conscious thought, it is a great idea to do a habits audit, to really assess the quality of our habits and make any necessary changes pending what you discover. Have you ever thought about your own habits? Are you able to list some of your habits? What are some things that you do automatically without even giving it a thought? Have you ever considered which of your habits are healthy and which may be unhealthy? Many of the habits you have now were most likely established and have developed since childhood and it may seem almost impossible to change them considering how automatic they are. But the good news is, according to experts, it takes about 21 days to form a new habit
It is simply, assessing our habits. A habits audit makes us stop and take notice of as many of our habits as possible, so that we become more consciously aware of what we do and when. This can be done by documenting in a journal dedicated to habits. We then list as many of our habits as possible and then decide which ones are healthy and which ones are unhealthy. From there, decide on which habit/s need to be replaced or removed to promote healthier living. And, how about introducing a new healthy habit into your life? Consider – These questions are just to get you thinking and started. What side of the bed do you sleep on? What time you get up every day? Do you set an alarm? Do you hit the snooze button? What do you do when you first get up in the morning? What is your morning routine? Do you exercise? When? For how long? What is your night routine? What is your sleep routine? Do you put milk in your coffee cup before or after the hot water? When do you brush your teeth? What types of food do you eat, and not eat? When do you eat? Do you snack? When do you have takeaway? How often do you use technology? What about social media? Do you procrastinate? When? Why? What do you do? What routines and schedules do you have?
How do we introduce a new habit? Habits are initially effortful and then become automatic the more we do them and practice them. After all, practice makes permanent! We need to plan, practice, and practice some more, review, reflect, practice some more, and continue to practice and review until the new habit becomes automatic. Important Steps to Habit Formation •
Mindset Matters – We need to have a growth mindset.
•
Clarity – We need to know what habit we want to introduce and why.
•
Planning – We need an action plan that includes the key steps, resources required, identification of possible obstacles and barriers.
•
Surround yourself with habit forming content like podcasts, books and TED Talks.
•
Track progress and review on an ongoing basis.
•
Act and practice your new habit every day for a minimum of 21 days.
Mastering anything takes persistence and deliberate practice. Everything you are today, and everything that you will ever accomplish is determined by the quality of habits that you form. So, it is well worthwhile to have healthy habits!

Targeting Your Ideal Client BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins
Every business needs 4 key elements 1. Feet through the door 2. Sales 3. Profit 4. Brand awareness Not all products or services appeal to everyone. Although sometimes they perhaps should. For instance, everyone of working age should have a Will and Power Of Attorney. Try telling that to an 18year old. They are completely invincible. An advert will not get them to change their mind. This then forces our entrepreneurial skills into overdrive. They are decidedly not the ideal market for this product. Most business have an “ideal client” that they would be directing their marketing through. The 80/ 20 rule, or the Pareto Principle, asserts that 80% of outcomes result from 20% effort in almost all businesses This 20% needs to be very clearly directed to maintain your position in the market. The other 80% will then be all the icing on the cake to raise your profile to a wider market in brand awareness, product selection and profitable sales. This in turn will grow the core business as they become part of the ever growing 80%.
Knowing how to identify that core client is crucial to success. These clients will then be the best marketers as they proport the virtues of the products they have bought and the business they bought it from. Identifying how to find these customers to target the marketing is to understand their needs. Core clients are those for whom the business solves a problem with the goods or services offered. There are two aspects to core clients, Physical needs and Emotional needs. The physical needs include Demographics, culture, education, age, gender.
religion,
Emotional needs include Time poor, convenience, support, service. We live in a WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) society. Customers are only interested in themselves. How can they get what they want, at the best price, when they want it, at the quality standard they expect for their needs.
it delivered to them? Where do they do their research into specific products? What level of education do they have? How technical can your marketing be? Are there any limitation on the goods due to Cultural or Religious considerations? What age group is most prevalent? Are they gender orientated? These are relatively easy to determine. EMOTIONAL: The emotive needs today have a high impact on the final purchase. Are the goods easy to find online and instore? We live in an instant society. Can the customers walk into your store and find what they want straight away? Do you have allied products alongside to complete the purchase? What service do they require with information, assistance with selection criteria? What follow up support do they expect? Do the goods require delivery, installation, connection, special packaging? Targeting customers needs will automatically draw them to your store or website as you address their needs.
In your research considering the target market the specific product range and assortment will also influence the logistics, display, marketing and advertising. DEMOGRAPHICS: Where are they situated? Can they get to the products they want quickly, or have

Could First Home Buyer Schemes Be Placing Borrowers in Excessive Debt? FINANCE BROKER By Allan Houliston
With the recent announcement that The Treasury has expanded the property price caps for homes purchased under the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme and Family Home Guarantee, this sounds like great news for first home buyers who are struggling to get a foothold in the property market. Could this, however, lead to a further increase in the average household debt, which is already at record levels due to the dramatically low interest rates and the increase in average house prices across the country?

The capital city price thresholds apply to regional centres with a population over 250,000, “recognising that dwellings in regional centres can be more expensive than other regional areas”. Geelong’s growth in population from both immigration and migration from Greater Melbourne, partially off the back of the pandemic, means that it meets the capital city price threshold for Victoria. New Home Guarantee construction extension The FHLDS (New Homes) scheme (also known as the New Homes Guarantee) which was launched last year will be expanded for a second year, providing an additional 10,000 places in 2021-22. The places are specifically for First Home Buyers seeking to build a new home or purchase a newly built dwelling with a deposit of 5 per cent and a construction commencement time frame of 12 months. The price caps are as follows: Region

The changes take effect on 1st July 2021 and the government has substantially increased property price caps under several of its schemes aimed to help first home buyers into the market, but the PRD Real Estate Group has now argued that participants may be swapping early and/or easier access to home ownership with a debt level they may not be ready to take on.

A total of 30,000 places will be made available under the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme range of schemes in the new financial year. First home buyers will be able to Purchase a property with as little as 5 per cent of the total purchase price, by way of their contribution. The government then guarantees the loan up to 20 per cent of the purchase price. This means that the applicants will avoid paying lender’s mortgage insurance, which can be costly and can substantially increase the end debt, where it is added to the base loan amount. The government are working closely with a panel of lenders, who can operate under the scheme and each individual lender have their own parameters and credit policy that they operate with under this framework.

According to Minister for Housing Michael Sukkar, new price caps for the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme (FHLDS) and the Family Home Guarantee (FHG) acknowledge the challenges of buying a new home or re-entering the housing market. And while the government’s intention might be good, PRD’s chief economist, Dr Diaswati Mardiasmo, warned of possible long-term challenges for current buyers.
With the FHLDS foreseeing a slim 5 per cent deposit and the FHG an even slimmer 2 per cent, first home buyers and single parents are essentially being asked to service a higher level of mortgage debt, Dr Mardiasmo explained. Additionally, Dr Mardiasmo said, the new price caps open up a higher probability for certain price bands to inflate, lifting prices on what was once thought of as “affordable”. “This potentially prices out the next generation of first home buyers and single parents, creating a multiplier effect of reliance on government incentives.” In addition, the Central Bank has said that it is closely watching the uptick in household borrowing for home loans but repeated that it does not, and should not, target house prices.

Concessional Contributions Cap – Increase From $25,000 p.a. To $27,500 p.a. FINANCIAL PLANNER By Mark Kruger
The new financial year from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 (FY22) sees increases to some of the key super contribution caps. Super contributions can play a key role in your wealth accumulation strategy and can, in some circumstances, allow you to reduce the amount of tax that you pay. One of the key changes is an increase to the concessional contribution cap. This provides a great opportunity to review a commonly-used strategy – salary sacrifice. Salary sacrifice Concessional contributions are funds going into your super from pre-tax dollars. The government is effectively saying, if you get more money into super now, we will give you a tax break to that we don’t have to support you as much in retirement.” Think of employer contributions – you don’t pay personal income tax on those contributions. If you earn $100,000 in FY22 and you are on a ‘salary + super’ package, your employer will contribute 10% (set to gradually increase over the next few years) of your salary to super in FY22 - $10,000. That $10,000 goes towards the $27,500 annual cap. What about the remainder of the cap ($27,500 - $8,000 = $17,500)? The government allows you to claim tax deductions up to those amounts. One way is via a salary sacrifice arrangement with your employer. That means asking your employer to contribute up to the cap and to take that amount, which you won’t be taxed on, out of your salary. The table below shows how this works for a salary of $100,000.
thought “I wish I had of set up a salary sacrifice arrangement at the beginning of the year.” Well, it’s not too late. You can contribute in a lump sum if you wish and, subject to the caps and some other formalities such as submitting a Notice of Intent, claim a tax deduction. The net effect is the same as salary sacrificing. Seek professional advice regarding this to ensure that caps aren’t breached, that things are done at the right time and in the right sequence, otherwise your deduction may be forfeited.
d
A couple of important things to note:
This article provides general information only. It does not consider your objectives, financial situation or needs. You should consider seeking independent legal, financial, taxation or other advice to check how this information relates to your unique circumstances. MoneyRocket is not liable for any loss caused, whether due to negligence or otherwise arising from the use of, or reliance on, the information provided directly or indirectly, by this article.
a
Once funds are in super, you are typically not able to access them until you reach your preservation age (the First Home Super Saver scheme is a notable exception).
b
Contributions to super in this way are taxed at 15%. If your marginal tax rate is less than 15%, it may make sense to contribute to super directly from your pocket (not via an employer) as a non-concessional contribution so that the 15% contributions tax does not apply. Seek professional advice regarding this.
c
Beware of changing salaries. If your salary goes up or down, that will change the amount able to be salary sacrificed. There are penalties for breaching contribution caps.
The table show a net benefit to you between what you have in your pocket and in super of $4,575. Not surprisingly, because wealth isn’t created out of nowhere, the government loses out by the exact same amount. Personal concessional contributions These work in a very similar way to salary sacrificing. Imagine you got to the end of the financial year, had some spare cash and wanted to contribute to super and
The Superannuation Guarantee (employer contribution rates) are set to increase gradually each year by 0.5%, culminating in a rate of 12% by FY26.
Super contributions need to be considered along with your other financial goals. They may or may not be right for you and that may change over time. Just because it is right for your friend in an apparently similar situation, does not mean it is right for you.

Installing a Shed Roller Door GARAGE DOORS By Chantal Djuric
There is much advice on the internet on how to install your own shed roller door. If you are thinking of installing one yourself, read on. This is a summary of what we do at Cruzin. We begin by measuring the width of the roller door against where it will be installed as the roller door curtain needs to be 100 mm wider than the opening. There has to be enough room on the side and the correct space between the wall bracket and the edge of the door curtain. After measuring accurately where the brackets will be fixed, we attach them with the appropriate equipment, depending on whether they are being fixed to brick, masonry, concrete or steel sheeting. This is not a job for the shed owner as working at heights is an OH&S issue that we take seriously. Is the chain operator a planetary geared one, a direct drive one or an electric one? Each one has specific instructions on how to be attached. This is fiddly and fraught with the potential to make mistakes. Only a trained garage door specialist will have the requisite expertise to assemble and attach it properly. Now we lift the roller door onto the brackets and loosely secure the axle to them. We never use the wall brackets to mount the door lifting gear as they are only designed to support the door. Remember, roller doors can weigh up to 200 kg, around twice the weight of most adult males. The door is now centred within the opening with the same amount of curtain overlap on each side. If the operator is an electric one, we position it as required at the same time. We remove strapping and packaging material, without cutting the centre nylon strap, and move the door to the rear of the bracket slots, turning the axle so the door is relaxed on the axle with the bottom rail at the bottom of the curtain. Without letting go of the curtain, we now cut the centre strap. Holding the centre of the bottom rail, we open and close the curtain to ensure it is correctly aligned on
the roll before fitting the guide tracks. As you can see, attaching the door precisely with the correct amount of tension is a tricky process that should be done by an expert.
With the domed screw heads on the outside of the door, and the door in the fully closed position, we mark and cut a hole in the side face of each track for the locking bolt to slide through.
Then we cut the bottom off the tracks so that the top stop is level with the top of the opening. Next, we slide the tracks onto the edge of the roller door, ensuring the top stops remain above the bottom rail to prevent the door rolling further upwards. Then we lower the door to the closed position, push the track against the wall and adjust sideways so there is a 3–6 mm gap between the inside of the track and the black plastic button at the end of the bottom rail. Using a builder’s level, we make sure the tracks are vertical before screwing or welding them to the walls with appropriate fasteners.
The final part of the process is to remove the outer protective film from the curtain door surface – and that’s it!
With the door in the open position, we loosen the two-axle clamp bolts and, using the slots in the wall brackets, move the door in towards the wall until almost touching the track front face and retighten the bolts. We adjust the operators, position the shute bolts at the ends of the bottom rail, mark the mounting bolt hole positions and drill so that the square shank of the domed headed coach screw will bite into the hole and not turn.
If you think this sounds complicated, you’re right! Too many things can go wrong. Aside from damaging the door, its components and your garage, you could suffer a severe injury. Our advice is – leave it to the experts! For 24/7 garage door servicing, give Cruzin Garage Doors a call on 0427 894 603 or email us at sales@ cruzingaragedoors.com.au.

Living Longer Impacts On Budget, Economy Colin Brinsden
(Australian Associated Press)
Australia faces a major challenge of an ageing population, made worse by the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh Frydenberg has warned. Releasing the 2021 Intergenerational Report, the treasurer said the economy will be smaller and the population will be older than it otherwise would have been with flow-on implications for economic and fiscal outcomes. The report shows Australia faces 40 years of budget deficits, relatively high levels of debt and slower economic growth than had been previously experienced. “The fact that we are living longer is to be welcomed but the impacts on our economy and our budget are profound,” Mr Frydenberg said, launching the report at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) event on Monday. The five-yearly IGR provides a guide to how the economy will look over the next 40 years and what it means for the budget. It is the fifth in the series, which was first introduced by former Liberal treasurer Peter Costello in 2002.
“And when we do, we focus on squabbles over slices of the pie, rather than over the size of the pie. We can and should do better than that.”
has to be well targeted and skills focused so it can supplement the stock of workingage people and slow the transition to an older population.
CEDA chief executive Melinda Cilento agreed the report shows Australia can’t afford another lost decade of policy reform.
He said economic growth will continue to be highly dependent on productivity gains and a vital ingredient in lifting long term living standards and wages.
She said Australia must tackle the costs of climate change, the reliance on income tax, boost productivity and fund essential services like health and aged care to manage the impacts of our ageing population.
Earlier the treasurer pledged on ABC radio to fully fund the NDIS, while noting health and education spending were also at record highs.
“Now is the time to take serious action to address these challenges,” Ms Cilento said. Mr Frydenberg expects the economy to grow by an average annual rate of 2.6 per cent from 2020/21 to 2060/61, 0.4 percentage points lower than the past 40 years. Australia’s population is expected to grow to 38.8 million by 2060/61. In the last IGR released by former Liberal treasurer Joe Hockey in 2015, the population was projected to hit almost 40 million by 2054/55.
Deloitte Access Economics economist Chris Richardson said the new IGR should start some overdue national conversations.
“This is the first time there has been a downward revision of the longterm population projections in an Intergenerational Report,” Mr Frydenberg said.
“Australians don’t spend enough time thinking about the future,” Mr Richardson told AAP.
As such, he said the composition of the migration program when borders reopen
“We want to continue to pursue reforms that encourage more investment by business, improve the provision of skills across the country and also ensure a more flexible workplace,” he said. But Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says the government has given up on reform and doesn’t even try to pretend to deliver it. “It’s given up on a future agenda. This is a government where productivity was going backwards for two quarters in a row before the pandemic. We had a productivity recession,” he told Sky News. Australian Industry Group chief executive Innes Willox also pointed out that most of the challenges identified in the report pre-date COVID. “Hopefully the need for action to maintain the COVID recovery will spur governments, businesses and the community more broadly to act more decisively on the numerous issues that have been clear for many years,” Mr Willox said.

Australia’s manufacturing sector has rebounded sharply from the depths of last year’s recession, but is already being hampered by skills shortages. Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief economist Ross Lambie says employers are having increasing difficulties finding experienced workers as a result of domestic and international border closures.
“These labour constraints are at levels not seen since September 2007,” Dr Lambie says. The Australian Chamber-Westpac survey of industrials trends released on Tuesday showed a further improvement in overall manufacturing conditions in the June quarter. Its actual composite index rose to 63.1 points from 59.4 in the March quarter and 48.7 in the December quarter. The recovery follows the dramatic fall in the index to 24 points in the June quarter last year that was associated with the initial lockdown and response to the pandemic. An index firmly above 50 suggests conditions are expanding at a brisk pace, in line with the recovery in the broader economy.
The survey shows output and new orders are rising at the fastest rate since late2018 and early-2019.
But confidence in Sydney dropped 4.6 per cent, and was even worse in regional NSW, down 6.6 per cent.
The expected composite index was at 60.6 points, well above its long run average, indicating businesses are optimistic about the outlook.
ANZ senior economist Felicity Emmett said the survey taken at the weekend
However, Westpac senior economist Andrew Hanlan said the survey also raised some areas or concern.
“Lingering disruptions and restrictions around COVID are hampering businesses’ ability to lift production,” Mr Hanlan said. Profit expectations have been marked lower, despite prospects for strong turnover, as cost pressures mount. A separate survey of consumer confidence showed the mood among Sydneysiders has deteriorated in response to the COVID-19 lockdown and having seen infections rise rapidly in a matter of days. However, confidence nationally was fairly flat, offset by the ongoing recovery in Melbourne after its recent restrictions. The weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index – a pointer to future household spending – declined 0.2 per cent.
would not have fully captured the impact of all the various restrictions and lockdowns imposed across states. Western Australia introduced a four-day lockdown in Perth and the neighbouring Peel regions on Monday night, while Darwin’s snap lockdown was extended to at least Friday. Queensland added to the roll call, announcing a three-day lockdown for the state’s southeast, Townsville and two islands.
“Recent experience suggests sentiment will respond to case numbers and lockdown measures in the coming weeks,” Ms Emmett said. “If case numbers remain high, confidence is likely to deteriorate, but if they come back under control quickly and restrictions look likely to be shortlived, sentiment is likely to rebound.” Recent data shows Melbourne’s 14-day lockdown hurt both retail spending and employment in Victoria. The Sydney lockdown is estimated to cost the NSW economy $2 billion. JULY 2021 | FIND GEELONG

Dealing with Anxiety By Robert Hunter
There is always such a happy atmosphere around our school - it’s great to see and an absolute privilege to be involved. Having said that though, I know anxiety is still a reality. Staff, parents and students attest to the issues surrounding it and for many it has escalated during this Covid crisis. Anxiety comes in a range of forms. In its mildest state it may present as a minor concern or a small worry. In its most severe state it could present as a debilitating phobia. In between are all the varying degrees, often put in the one basket labelled, ‘Anxiety’. It’s very helpful to recognise that anxiety (or fear) is a normal emotion. We all feel a certain amount of it in the face of life’s challenges. In many instances it is a very helpful response. For example, it’s right to be fearful when standing on the edge of a cliff. Similarly when we encounter new challenges, it’s necessary that we have a heightened level of awareness, our antennas go up and we know we need to be working harder, giving a new task our full attention. It’s good to be nervous at times – a healthy response in certain situations. I have very fond memories of some special needs secondary students that I was working with, some years ago, very proudly declaring, after they had successfully gone up 55 storeys of the Rialto Towers, walked around the Observation Deck and then returned safely back down, ‘Rob! We faced our fears. We did it!’ Most cases of Anxiety come into a similar category. We need to face them. We may need help. Someone to talk things through with. Someone to walk with us. Some new strategies or skills learned. Some education – a course of sorts. Occasionally we may need some professional help from a counsellor or psychologist. I was reassured recently to hear some high powered business leaders testifying to this very thing. They described the anxiety and stress they experience when confronted with new challenges. For our children, nine times out of ten they simply need some patient talking through of the experience that faces them. They need to express their thoughts, concerns or issues. They may need some empathy, understanding, encouragement, logical thoughts, reassurance, a realignment to the positives, expelling of the lies and the doubts and the truth restated: ‘You can do this.’ ‘It’s okay to feel nervous.’ ‘You’re good!’ ‘I love you.’ ‘You don’t have to get it right first time.’ ‘It’s okay to make mistakes.’ ‘I believe in you.’ ‘I’m proud of you.’ I hope that’s helpful. Kindest regards, Rob. LPS Chaplain. Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.au

Victoria State Emergency Service Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) is the control agency for flood, storm, tsunami and earthquake in Victoria, managing responses to these emergencies and helping communities to prepare through planning and education. VICSES also operates the largest road crash rescue response network in the state and also provides a support role to other emergency service agencies. VICSES Bellarine Unit The VICSES Bellarine Unit is one of 24 units located in the South West region and is made up entirely of volunteers. It is supported by professional staff both from state headquarters and the South West regional office. The units LHQ (local headquarters) is located on Grubb Road on the outskirts of Drysdale and its members reside in all corners of the peninsula. The response area for the unit covers the entire Bellarine Peninsula and includes the towns of Clifton Springs, Curlewis, Drysdale, Indented Head, Leopold, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff, St Leonards, Wallington and all areas in between. In addition, our members may be deployed to other regions of the state to assist with large-scale operations such as major storms, floods or fires. We have even had members from our unit deployed across Australia to assist our interstate counterparts. VICSES Bellarine Unit typically receives over 200 requests for assistance each year and we rely upon local volunteers to help in both operational and support roles. Volunteers from VICSES Bellarine Unit come from all walks of life, all backgrounds and all professions. In fact, the main thing we have in common is a desire to make a contribution within our community.
“Each year we normally hold a tin rattle to raise much needed funds, however as with many other activities, we have been unable to do so, and don’t expect we will be able to in the near future. We have a number of Unit Vehicles that are due for replacement in the short term, and need to start planning for it now to ensure we have the necessary monies to be able to do so. Given that we have been unable to have our annual tin rattle during these times, we are looking for support in a different way. We have partnered with a Not-for-Profit organization that specializes in assisting organizations like ours with online donations. The Unit would be humbled for any support that the community that we live in would be able to give us, so that we can be there for you, in your time of need. Please head over to our Give Now page, and donate to a cause that directly supports your local community. All donations over $2 are Tax Deductible”.

Design Your City - Winners Announced!
Inspired by Geelong Design Week and visiting exhibition How Cities Work, the National Wool Museum invited young people to share their design ideas for Geelong’s future urban development. The challenge was to present an urban design concept for a public amenity or infrastructure with entrants asked to submit a detailed drawing and explanation of their idea. Entries were judged by the City of Greater Geelong’s Manager of Urban Design, Jonathan Daly, who was thrilled to see so many creative ideas. Congratulation to our four winners! The National Wool Museum is proud to display the winners design illustrations in the How Cities Work exhibition over the winter school holidays. 1. Miwa Katsuragi was awarded the most practical idea for her design of Market Square Shopping Centre. Miwa designed a modern park with safety and useful facilities front of mind. 2. Olive Feldman was awarded the most creative idea for her design, Rainbow City. The design included a community centre and a science and music centre inside brightly coloured and themed buildings. 3. Juliet Feldman was awarded the most imaginative idea for her design, Fairy Play Library. Her ideas centred around a themed library with soft grassy stairs and a thriving community garden complete with mushrooms for seats.
4. Sean Yew-Qi Entesari-Tatafi was awarded the best overall idea for his design, Sustainable City Solutions. Sean clearly put a lot of thought into his design that featured Maglevs (magnetic levitation trains) run on solar energy, captured from seethrough solar panel windows. Jonathan Daly - Manager Urban Design
“The level of engagement and creativity from our youth in imagining a better future for Geelong was truly inspiring. Congratulations to everyone who took part, especially the winners.”

Stage one upgrades were completed early last year and included the installation of security lighting, CCTV, landscaping and improvements to the network of paths. Last year’s upgrades were made possible with $300,000 allocated in Council’s Budget 2020-21 and a $249,849 grant from the Department of Justice and Regulation’s Public Safety Infrastructure fund. Cr Peter Murrihy, Chair of the Leisure and Recreation portfolio, looks forward to seeing the finished works.
Community Feedback Invited On Waurn Ponds Skate Park Vision Skaters and locals are one step closer to enjoying upgraded facilities at the Waurn Ponds skate park, with the draft concept plan released for community feedback. The draft plan has been designed to meet the needs of a variety of skateboarding abilities, following consultation with local skaters and current users of the facility. The creation of transition-based skate features, tree and shrub plantings and areas to socialise and observe were identified as important elements in the pre-design workshops. Skaters, scooters and bike riders will soon enjoy refurbished skate plaza, mini and vertical skate ramp facilities along with a new bowl and various skate elements. Improving the overall flow for users will be a key component of the upgrades. Additional upgrades proposed at the facility include: •
• • • •
Youth active recreation area, with potential elements such as beginner and advanced parkour features and a multi-sport half court; Additional seating; Tree and shrub plantings; A formalised car park; and An improved path network through the open space.
Greater Geelong Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan said these changes would open the facility up to be enjoyed by the whole community.
“We’re excited to see the draft concept plans released and the vision for this well-used facility come to life. The proposed upgrades will make such a difference to local residents and transform the space into a recreation area that will be enjoyed by skaters of varying skill levels and the wider community.” These upgrades form stage two of the Waurn Ponds Skate Park Landscape Plan. The City is contributing $300,000 towards the project, adding to the $1.34m Victorian Government investment through its Sport and Recreation Victoria Community Sport Stimulus Infrastructure Program.
“We want to see this recreational hub become a space for the whole community to enjoy and one that supports physical and outdoor activities for all ages. I encourage community members to view the plans and have their say to ensure it meets their needs and aspirations for the space. I’m certain the facility will become even more popular as it caters for a larger variety of interests, ages and skill levels and we’re thankful for the support from the state government in making these upgrades possible.” A detailed plan of the works will be developed by Convic, with construction expected to commence in early 2022. Community members are invited to view the concept plans and provide feedback via the Have Your Say page before Friday 9 July 2021.
More News and Updates
Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman encouraged young people to share their thoughts on the design. “Whether it’s a multi-sport court, a climbing wall or a flying fox, the features of the proposed recreation area are open to the view of young people in our community.

The Margaret Fulton Cookbook encouraged Australian housewives to experiment with more interesting ingredients, straying from the old tradition of meat and three veg. This delightful musical romp follows her journey from humble beginnings to super-stardom. A musical biography of a true Aussie legend based on her bestselling autobiography. Before Margaret Fulton burst into the nation’s kitchens in 1969 with her burnt orange crockpots and chunky stoneware serving dishes, encouraging housewives to try their hand at Nasi Goreng and Apricot Chicken, Australian food was bland, boring and British, or overly fussy, fancy and French!

White Night Geelong 2021 Geelong will shine bright when White Night returns this year, giving locals and businesses a boost as major events return to the calendar in 2021. White Night Geelong will this year take place on 6 November, after the colourful spectacle made its debut in 2018. Colourful projections and installations will bring the city’s streets, laneways and parks to life, and also transform the Geelong foreshore. An expression of interest is now open to artists in the categories of installation, visual art, lighting, audio-visual, projection, film, music and performance exploring the theme ‘everything on the land is reflected in the sky’. The 2021 program will embrace the global spirit of White Night as a vibrant and inclusive celebration of community participation through immersive art installations in city spaces.
The city will be transformed through stunning illumination and projection, music, performance, art, culinary experiences, and interactive works from local, national, and international artists. The program will capitalise on what makes Geelong unique and elevate the city’s cultural and gastronomic credentials, as well as its reputation for design and rich music scene. Supported by the state’s primary tourism and events body, Visit Victoria, White Night 2021 is led by internationally acclaimed artist Joseph O’Farrell (JOF) who will lead the charge as creative director. White Night Geelong 2018 attracted 70,000 attendees and delivered an economic impact of $6.1 million to the region. The return of White Night Geelong in 2021 will provide more good news for local businesses and showcase local talent and produce as visitors converge on the city and give local tourism operators a boost.
White Night is a State Government of Victoria initiative that is owned and managed by Visit Victoria. Guide To Geelong Waterfront Waterfront Geelong History The Geelong Waterfront has been an integral part of the city’s economic and social community for over 150 years. Without it, Geelong would not be the magnificent city it is today. And what you see as you stroll its beautiful boulevards is the result of over 100 years of vision, focus, and dedication. In the early years, Geelong was an official port for the exportation of gold. Its location was ideal for miners as they could avoid travelling through Melbourne and it was closer to the Ballarat Goldfields. In 1868 the first wool mills opened in Geelong and massive wool sheds sprung up along the foreshore. Most of the Waterfront was dedicated to the wool trade and for a time the city was known as ‘the wool centre of the world’. By the turn of the 20th century, Geelong was a major agricultural trading port. And by the 1940s wool was the second largest export commodity out of the port. Stage 1 of the city foreshore beautification plan began in the mid-1980s and involved landscaping the Corio Bay Crescent between Rippleside and Limeburners Point. In 1995 a partnership was formed between the Victorian State Government and the City Of Greater Geelong to redevelop and beautify the area. A major goal was to transform the waterfront into a local and tourist destination capable of drawing traffic from the highway en route to The Bellarine and Great Ocean Road – Victoria’s busiest tourist route. They’ve well and truly achieved that goal and the Geelong Waterfront is now a major Victoria tourist attraction with hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Here are just some of the things you can see and do when you visit. Geelong Baywalk The Geelong Baywalk allows ease of movement between the different bayside areas. Considered critical to the success of the Waterfront, the path allows people to move safely and without interruption along the foreshore from Limeburners Point to Rippleside Park. The walk is quite magical in the early mornings and evenings and there are plenty of seats and stopping points along the way. One of the many highlights you’ll see are the bollards that make up the Geelong Baywalk Bollard Trail.

Geelong Baywalk Bollards Geelong Baywalk Bollards Made from old timber pylons from the demolished Yarra Street pier, the Geelong Bollards are a visual history of the city. Created by local artist Jan Mitchell, over 100 of these colourful characters line the 3-kilometre path along Corio Bay. Each bollard tells a story about the people who played a part in the city’s history.
If you would like to know more about the Geelong Bollards you can read our full guide by clicking here.
Eastern Beach Geelong One of the best and most loved Geelong places to visit is Eastern Beach. Located at the eastern end of the Waterfront, it’s the city’s favourite spot to play, and it’s one of the great places in Geelong for families with kids. Here you’ll find the iconic promenade, a kiddies pool, and a shark-proof swimming enclosure. Kids love the playground, water activities, and the Giant Skywheel, and adults enjoy the lush lawns, barbecues, and nearby cafe. You can read our full guide to Eastern Beach by clicking here. Imaginary play will come to life this Christmas with the exclusive Bosch Work Bench ($49), new LEGO Batman vs The Joker ($39) and Hot Wheels Super Ultimate Garage ($169). 2. Holidaying at home: Trading the family trip to Thailand for a trampoline? Holidaying at home has seen Aussies transform their homes into playtime paradise, investing in bigger ticket items. Outdoor playsets, cubby houses, scooters and bikes have seen huge growth, with the category up 39% on last year. Scoot into outdoor fun this Toy Mania with a Huffy Alloy Inline Scooter ($39) or snap one of this year’s must-have items; the new and exclusive Bluey trampoline ($129).
The top toy trends according to BIG W: 1. Schoolyard fun: Toys once again rule the school as Aussie kids are free to play, co-create, trade and show off their favourite toys. Schoolyard classics like Beyblades, Bakugan and Loom Bands are hot property this year with the ever-popular Pokémon brand seeing a 64% sales growth year-onyear. The new Beyblade Speedstorm Battle Set ($69) and exclusive Bakugan Fusion Bundle ($49) are two hot items that will be sure to get everyone on the playground joining in.
4. Big Kid Collectors: Proving fun doesn’t get old, more adults are turning to toys to bring joy and play into their lives. From Star Wars to Marvel, Harry Potter and Barbie, collectables is BIG W’s fastest growing category this year, transporting their owners to a different time and helping bring out their inner child. BIG W has fanatics covered with the new Avengers Thor & Loki collectibles ($29) and limited-edition picks from Care Bear Hopeful Heart Bear ($39) and My Little Pony Pinkie Pie ($39). 5. The small screen reigns supreme: With blockbuster releases taking a back seat this past year, Aussie kids have turned to the small screen to keep entertained. TV shows like Bluey and LEGO Masters are exploding on screens across the nation, with kids snapping up toys to match. With YouTube Kids and TikTok inspiring fun and gaming remaining a firm favourite, tech toys like the DGTEC 7-inch tablet ($29) that get kids plugged in, or playing, like the Nintendo Switch Lite ($289), are tipped to fly off shelves. Toy Mania begins in store 17 June and ends 14 July 2021. Hurry, while stocks last.

REDOM
Is A Mental Issue
RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly
Because we are the first generation who are living – en masse – into our 90s, we have never been taught how best to combat boredom. There are no roadmaps – we are pioneers who must find our own pathway. Boredom is actually a mental issue – if we can’t control our minds, then external forces will. Our brains are living organisms, wanting to acquire knowledge. And if we don’t put our hands on the tiller, television and newspapers will fill the gap. CONTINUE LEARNING The first antidote is to continue learning. The phase Lifelong Learning is now in common usage, and for good reason. We now have 35 years in retirement, and we will obviously need to forget most of what we knew, and learn about our constantly changing circumstances. Formal programs are best, as the structure will keep you focused, and an online undergraduate degree will provide you with direction for the next eight years.
GROUP PARTICIPATION Group Participation is an activity that most of us never learned, but it’s a fine medication to combat boredom. Take Rotary for instance. When you join Rotary, the schedule is laid out for you, and who your team associates will be. This is active in-depth Participation, and so in contrast to the very individual activity of borrowing books from your local library. TECHNOLOGY Another approach technology.
is
to
embrace
There is so much to learn and do – banking, shopping, health management, socialisation etc. It is easy to incorporate technology into your lifestyle – you could be watching live feeds of birdlife in the UK or playing games against international teams. MINDFULNESS This is all about stress reduction – and stress is all too common in our world.
It’s also about happiness – something Buddist monks know all about, but when we’re listening to the radio while preparing breakfast and simultaneously thinking about next weekend, we fail to see cloud formations or flowers in bloom in the garden. Mindfulness is up there as a primary tool to combat boredom. COMMUNITY RESOURCES Community resources are everywhere – and if you’re surprised it’s because you haven’t looked for them. My suggestion is to look for Neighbourhood Houses in your locality. They host choirs, low cost lunches, gardening clubs and other numerous activities that will help you combat boredom.

Making the Most of Moments WELLNESS By Georgia Walker
‘Life is made up of moments’ …. ‘Time is precious’ If statements such as these are true, then are we making the most of our time and moments? We have all most certainly heard of the ‘buzz’ word mindfulness. What is it? What is all the fuss about? To put it simply mindfulness is the act of living in the present moment, paying attention and being engaged with what is happening around us. Sounds simple enough but this can actually be quite a challenge as our minds in their state of constant chatter and endless thoughts seem to take us away from the present moment, therefore missing out on our precious moments. The opposite of mindfulness is mindlessness; eating without noticing flavours, reading a few sentences and unable to remember what you have read, getting home and not remembering the drive, lost in thought worrying about the future or mourning the past. Some of the benefits of mindfulness are that, it helps us to focus, gives us more energy, helps us to worry less, reduces anxiety and gives us the opportunity to become more in tune with our bodies and what we are feeling and experiencing. It is through this awareness and attunement we are then able to listen to our bodies and recognise when something is out of balance or not quite ok. Becoming mindful takes practise. By making a commitment, even as little as a few minutes a day can help us develop this important skill. So how do we do this? Here are a few brief tips to get you started. 1: Find a space where you can sit and get comfortable. Close your eyes if you like. Begin to take notice of your breath as it flows in and out of your body. Take notice of all the sounds you can hear. Then notice what your body is feeling, eg: cold, hot, tingly, tense, relaxed…. Every time your mind begins to wander or think (and it will) gently bring your focus back to the present by paying attention to the sounds, your breath and your body. 2: Choose a task you do every day eg; washing dishes, brushing teeth, getting dressed etc… And every time you do this task immerse yourself and pay attention to what you are actually doing by noticing sounds, your breathing, how your body is feeling and what you are seeing. Again as your mind wanders bring it gently back to the present moment by focusing on what you are doing through your senses. With practise you will find that living mindfully will help you make the most of your moments!
