About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch
The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

VCE – 2 Worst Years Since Inception By Warren Strybosch
The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) was established as a pilot project in 1987. The earlier Higher School Certificate (HSC) was abolished in 1992. There was a about 5 schools trialling the pilot program in Victoria and I was attending one of those at the time. The VCE is one credential available to secondary school students who successfully complete year 11 and 12 in the Australian state of Victoria. ... Study for the VCE is usually completed over two years but can be spread over a longer period of time in some cases e.g., 3 years. It could easily be argued that these last two years of VCE would have been one of the toughest two years on record since it started 34 years ago.
Not only did students have to deal with close to 300 days of lockdown, online schooling, the General Achievement Test (GAT) being postponed four times, sitting exams without power and/or having to reschooled exams when one of their class mates become Covid-19 positive, they also have had to deal with their whole family being at home whilst they tried to study, the distractions that surrounded them e.g. Fortnite, parents with reduced work or losing their jobs, increased suicides amongst their peers, and so on. It is amazing that these young adults, who have managed to complete their VCE’s, have done so at all.
We, at the Find Geelong, want to wish all VCE’s students our best wishes for their exams and hope that the next four or five years, whether it is studying at Uni, taking a gap year and then studying, or simply going into the workforce, is better than the two years you have just lived through. We are thinking of you all as you complete your exams and hope you get the results you are hoping for. If you do not, I can attest, as someone who failed VCE and now has 7 qualifications under their belt, including a post grad, that there are many and varied pathways into university. Life does not end when VCE finishes…in fact, it is just the beginning of your journey through adulthood.

More Australian Borders Open By Christmas Andrew Brown and Matt Coughlan (Australian Associated Press)
Australia is expected to allow quarantinefree travel for fully vaccinated international arrivals into at least four states before Christmas. South Australia will scrap isolation requirements for overseas and domestic travellers with two coronavirus jabs when the state reaches 90 per cent immunisation coverage. Premier Steven Marshall expects the milestone to be reached before Christmas, weeks after state borders open on November 23.
The SA government’s announcement further isolates Western Australia, which is likely to remain shut to countries, states and territories with coronavirus until next year. The massive backlog of returning Australians will be the first to benefit from the new international travel arrangements before migrant workers, international students and tourists. Australia is on track for one of the world’s highest vaccination rates, with more than 74 per cent of over-16s now fully vaccinated. In excess of 87 per cent have received at least one dose.
Victoria and NSW will permit doublejabbed overseas arrivals to enter Melbourne and Sydney without having to isolate from Monday.
The vaccine rollout – plagued by delays for months – is expected to soon include booster shots for the general public.
Tasmania has set December 15 as the date it will throw open borders to international and domestic travellers.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration and Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation met with Health Minister Greg Hunt on Monday.
All travellers will be required to test negative for coronavirus.
Mr Hunt said a decision on third jabs for the wider population was imminent.
“Over the next coming days, I expect to receive the final advice of the TGA on the booster program,” he told parliament on Tuesday. “As we go forward, we continue to save lives and protect lives.” People with severely compromised immune systems are eligible for top-up vaccines. Aged care residents and older Australians are likely to be next to receive third shots when the booster program expands. All states and territories have passed the 60 per cent two-dose coverage, with WA the last state to reach the mark. Case numbers rose slightly in Victoria with 1510 new infections and four deaths reported on Tuesday. There was a slight drop in NSW cases with 282 recorded, along with another death, while Canberra detected 12 new cases. Queensland registered two new local cases – a teenage boy who was a close contact of a person that travelled from NSW, and a woman in home quarantine after being in Melbourne. DIN
All company Director’s now can register for their Director IDs online
By Warren Strybosch
All Australian company directors including SMSF directors can now register for the new director ID. This unique 15-digit identifier only takes about 15 minutes to apply online for most people but for those overseas a paper-based system may need to be used. For those currently living overseas, it is recommended they start this process as soon as possible as there might be issues with matching current director names to their actual birth names. The director IDs will stay with a person for life and aims to provide greater security and a level playing field for all those running a business. Superannuation and Financial Services Minister Jane Hume said it would cut red tape and make things fairer for all. “Directors will keep the same director ID as they move between different roles, businesses and even countries,” Ms Hume said. “Acting as a unique identifier for every director, director ID not only paves the way for streamlined experiences in the future but offers directors greater confidence that they are protected from fraud and illegal activity today.”
With over 2.7 million company directors can now apply for their new director identification numbers (director ID) using the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) website. To apply, directors can simply log into ABRS online using the myGovID app. It is free to apply and available to directors within Australia and overseas. Applications are available by phone and by paper for those who need it. Any individual who is a director or acting as an alternate director must register. This includes directors of an SMSF or a limited recourse borrowing (LRBA) corporate trustee. Due to the huge number of applications that will need processing, there are transitional arrangements in place for directors to assist with the onboarding process. Key dates to be aware of From 1 November 2021 to the end of 4 April 2022 there is a transitional period where all new directors have 28 days to apply for a DIN after being appointed as a director.
From 5 April 2022, when the transitional period ceases, all directors will be required to apply for a DIN prior to being appointed as a director. For all existing directors appointed prior to 31 October 2021, they will have a deadline of 30 November 2022 to apply for a DIN. SMSF Directors are encouraged to get their DIN as soon as possible. For directors of corporate trustees related to a SMSF, only they can apply for their own DIN. The accountant, tax agent or bookkeeper will not be able to apply on their behalf. As such, all SMSF Directors of SMSF are encouraged to also start the process as soon as possible. For those setting up a new SMSF or a limited recourse borrowing arrangement, they must get the DIN with in 28 days of face ASIC action, including penalties for noncompliance. If a SMSF director fails to obtain their DIN, the SMSF could become noncompliance and face huge tax liabilities. Also, it might result in the SMSF Director, who is also a member, having to exit the SMSF given they have demonstrated they do not have the ability to manage their own SMSF.
COVID Update By Warren Strybosch
Bendigonians will be one of the first group of Victorians to be administered the third job in a hope to reduce COVID numbers.
Triple Jab Out Now
The third jab will only be available to those who have already had the two first jabs at least six months earlier. The booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine will be offered to all eligible adults, regardless of the vaccine type received for their first and second shots. Those wanting to receive their booster shot must provide proof of their first two COVID-19 vaccinations before they will be able to get the booster shot. However, the proof must be via your mobile device displaying the certificate or a copy of the certificate supplied via Medicare. It won’t be enough to simply show the card that was written on by the nurse who gave you the first and second vaccination shots as there are reports that some people have obtained these cards and falsified, they have been vaccinated already. For anyone caught with falsified documents we believe the fines are very hefty.
- A Boost To All
The booster dose will be offered to people over the age of 18 and who had their second COVID-19 vaccination over six months ago.
Victorians
It is also believed that the health minister has stated that all state-run aged care residents and staff will be required to take the booster shot in the coming months. It is reported that a Pfizer booster shot five months after a second dose reduces a person’s risk of hospitalisation with the coronavirus by 93 per cent. This is yet to be proven given we are all still living through the largest clinic trial on earth.

COVID Update Less Children To Suffer From Heart-Attacks When Taking Pfizer
Pfizer adds ingredient used to stabilize heart attack victims in vax for kids Buried on Page 14 in the Pfizer paperwork submitted to the FDA for the Covid vaccine for children is the following: Vaccine formulation Authorization is being requested for a modified formulation of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. Each dose of this formulation contains 10 μg of a nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the viral spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 that is formulated in lipid particles and supplied as a frozen suspension in multiple dose vials.
To provide a vaccine with an improved stability profile, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for use in children 5-11 years of age uses tromethamine (Tris) buffer instead of the phosphate buffered saline (PBS) as used in the previous formulation and excludes sodium chloride and potassium chloride. The packaged vials for the new formulation are stored frozen at -90°C to – 60°C. The frozen vials may be thawed and stored at refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C for up to 10 weeks. Tromethamine (Tris) is a blood acid reducer which is used to stabilize people with heart attacks.

Here are known side effects: Respiratory depression, local irritation, tissue inflammation, injection site infection, febrile response, chemical phlebitis, venospasm (vein spasms), hypervolemia, IV thrombosis, extravasation (with possible necrosis and sloughing of tissues), transient decreases in blood glucose concentrations, hypoglycemia, and hepatocellular necrosis with infusion via low-lying umbilical venous catheters.

AMA Encourages
Doctor’s Not To Abide By Their Own Code Of Conduct
By Warren Strybosch
The AMA Victoria president, Dr Roderick McRae, said those who do not believe Covid-19 is real or a threat should update their advanced care directives and inform their relatives that they do not wish to receive care in the public health system if diagnosed with the virus. “Covid-deniers” and “anti-vaxxers” should opt out of care in the public health system if they catch the virus as Victoria reopens, says the Victorian branch of the Australian Medical Association. This statement by the AMA seems to flies in the face of the code of conduct that doctors must abide by when dealing with patients. The Good Medical practice (the code) describes what is expected of all doctors registered to practice medicine in Australia. It also is intended to let the community know what they can expect from doctors. Under section 3.4 Decisions about access to medical care, the code states:
Your decisions about patients’ access to medical care must be free from bias and discrimination. Good medical practice involves:
•
3.4.2 Not prejudicing your patient’s care because you believe that a patient’s behaviour has contributed to their condition.
•
3.4.3 Upholding your duty to your patient and not discriminating against your patient on grounds such as race, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or other grounds, as described in antidiscrimination legislation
•
3.4.7 Not allowing your moral or religious views to deny patients access to medical care, recognising that you are free to decline to personally provide or directly participate in that care.
We understand these are trying times for everyone involved, but we are disappointed that the AMA has politized their role and encouraged doctors and nurses to go against their core values of why they joined the profession e.g., to care for all people needing medical attention.
Maybe someone in his profession needs to remind Dr Roderick McRae of his own code for which he should be abiding by? This language can only be seen as inflammatory in a time that is already stressful for medical practitioners in Victoria.

Victorian Nurses can be fired but a court challenge related to the Vaccine mandate is likely heading to court By Warren Strybosch
Many nurses are being forced to leave their jobs because they are either refusing to take the Covid-19 vaccination or refusing to disclose their vaccination status. A group of nurses from Monash Health, tried to stop unsuccessfully stop Monash Health, one of Victoria’s largest public health service, from allowing them to be fired – the court injunction was thrown out by the federal court. A directive from Victoria’s chief health officer under the Public Health Act makes it clear that health workers must be fully vaccinated, having received at least their first Covid-19 vaccine dose by 29 October, in order to work in a healthcare setting. They must provide evidence of vaccination to their employer. As such, Monash Health has been given the green light to terminate it’s nurses if they do not take the jab.
Justice John Snaden said that Monash Health had no choice but to fire them. “…the evidence that there is very much suggests that the course that has been plotted has been plotted because Monash Health has formed the view that under the public health directions by which it is bound, they’re not permitted to do anything else [other than terminate employment],” he said. Chris O’Grady QC, representing Monash Health, said the employer had simply been following the chief health officer’s directions. “In light of the CHO directions it goes without saying that anyone working in the health sector is going to have difficulty working in that sector absent their willingness to either be vaccinated or disclose their vaccination status,” he said.
The only hope for those nurses who have not been vaccinated is the pending court case regarding the vaccination mandate. Snaden said when the matter goes to trial, if the court finds the vaccine mandate was unlawful, then the nurses would likely have their employment reinstated and receive back pay. Therefore, the court had no reason to block disciplinary action including Monash Health firing the nurses in the meantime, he said. Monash Health has given undertakings not to take action against the relevant nurses until the matter was determined. In light of Snaden’s decision, Health was now free to terminate the staff. SMSF Trustees – Should You Purchase Collectables? ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch
SMSFs trustees need to be aware of the various compliance risks surrounding collectables, as the asset class requires continued consideration and how it can impact a SMSF. With low interest rates, SMSF trustees are looking for alternative investments to place their funds into which has led to an increase in collectables within SMSFs. However, care needs to be given to the restrictive rules surrounding the holding of collectables in a SMSF. Collectables and personal-use assets include artwork, jewellery, antiques, artefacts, coins, stamps, books, memorabilia, wine, cars, bikes, recreational boats and club memberships. Bullion is not included as its value is based on intrinsic weight and purity.
One of the restrictions with collectables, is that they cannot be leased or used by a related party or stored in a private residence of a related party. The SMSF can only lease them to unrelated parties e.g., to an art gallery, and it must be possible to show the transaction was completely at arm’s length. Even with vintage cars held with an SMSF, the related party cannot drive it for any reason, even if it is for maintenance purposes or to get restoration work done on the vehicle. When it comes to storage of these type of assets, they must be remote; not located in a trustee’s private residence – that includes the land they own. As such, artwork and vehicles, cannot he displayed in a trustee’s home or stored in a purpose built shed on their property. Records must be kept by trustees showing how the decision was made to store the items.
11
Lastly, the items must be insured by the SMSF and not in a trustee’s individual name or under a business entity they might own. If the SMSF cannot insure the collectibles appropriately so that the asset is secure for members in the future, then the fund must dispose of that asset. Whilst collectibles are a different asset class to hold within the SMSF and may seem ‘sexy’ when telling friends and other’s you own such an asset, given the limited ability to use or display such an asset, trustees need to consider whether or not holding such an asset is worth all the hassle. At Find Accountant, we provide SMSF tax advice. Our senior accountant is also an award-winning financial advisor. If you require SMSF advice or are considering whether or not to wind up your SMSF, then speak to Warren Strybosch at Find Accountant Pty Ltd.

Claim Tax on Leased Vehicles
How Does
Salary Packaging Benefit Employers?
Even though your friendly provider will handle all the paperwork, novated lease cars are leased through your company. This means you can claim on the lease and the running costs of the car for a healthier, happier tax outcome at the end of the financial year. These savings can be noteworthy if you have multiple employees that take advantage of this benefit. Novated leases are a particularly attractive incentive to reward and retain employees. The best part is that you don’t have to have an FBT-exempt status to offer it. Most private businesses with even just a single employee can offer this reward. Entice New Recruits On the hunt for new employees during a personnel shortage? Salary packaging is the perfect way to entice fresh faces without putting your hand in your own pocket. The many benefits of salary packaging can be leveraged to tempt the best talent to your company. Given the range of services that can be paid for with pre-tax deductions, it is definitely worth highlighting in negotiations. Depending on your industry, new employee’s can expect to use pre-tax deductions to buy a new car and pay for bills, mortgages, holiday accommodation, rent, credit cards, loans, property rates and more.
Want to know more? Let’s chat. SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls
Salary packaging might be an incredible incentive for employees, but did you know all the benefits available to you as an employer? Here is your quick guide to how outsourcing your salary packaging can improve your HR strategies and your bottom line. Reward & Retain If you offer salary packaging or novated leasing options to your current employee’s, you’ll inspire confidence and increase loyalty. Your team members will feel rewarded for all the hard work they do with visible financial advantages, such as being able to afford that brand new car. These arrangements make them valued and give them a reason to stay - especially if other employers aren’t
offering such incentives. The salary packaging options available to your employees will depend on your industry, but by outsourcing to a trusted provider such as The Salary Packaging People, we can help you tailor your salary packaging structure to suit your eligibility. Save Serious Dollars It may surprise you to know that using a salary packaging provider won’t require any additional investment by your company. Salary packaging providers receive payment through minor administrative fees that form part of your employee’s pre-tax deductions. Given what your employees save, these fees are negligible. The most important thing to remember is that you do not pay extra for the service and these arrangements could help your business save money. When set up correctly, a reduction in your employee’s pre-tax income can result in a decrease in your Payroll Tax Obligations. An experienced provider can also ensure this is set up to be fully ATO compliant.
At The Salary Packaging People, we’ve helped hundreds of employers design salary packaging solutions that result in healthier finances and higher employee retention rates. Contact us or call 03 5229 4200 to talk to someone today.

The Silly Season is Looming – Time to Prep!
13
For businesses, particularly retail and hospitality the Christmas period can be your busiest time of year. Businesses on the coast in particular will see a huge influx of visitors from Metro areas. Now is the time to start planning if you need extra staff on over this period and advertising for that staff. Finding staff for the hospitality sector has been quite difficult through the lockdown periods but this scarcity should ease coming into December.
BOOKKEEPER By Mary-Clare Switz
Yes! the silly season is only weeks away! Eek!! There are a whole number of things to consider and prep for … … Public Holidays – 4 days on Sunday 25 December through Tuesday 28 December & another 2 days Saturday 1 January & Monday 3 January This year Christmas Day and Boxing Day both fall on the weekend. They are both public holidays PLUS the Monday and Tuesday are also public holidays. New Year’s Day is also on a Saturday. It is a public holiday along with another one on Monday 3rd. Christmas close down It is important to plan your Christmas Close Down well in advance and communicate it to your employees. This will give you ample time to structure who is taking annual leave when, when payroll will be processed around the public holidays, scheduling maintenance, etc. Payroll processing For business who will have a payroll falling on Monday 27th or Tuesday 28th, decide if you will be processing payroll on Wednesday 29th December or on the prior Friday. If you use a bookkeeper to process payroll, coordinate with them regarding when payrolls will be set up and when they will be processed. This may mean that two or more payrolls may have to be set up ready to be processed prior to closing down. Remember, your bookkeeper will be taking time off too.
Annual Leave During the last nearly two COVID affected years we have seen many businesses whose employees have not taken their regular annual leave and their accrued entitlements are larger than normal. If your business has a Christmas shut down, consider having staff on leave a bit longer than normal to use up some of their accrual. In addition, work with your staff to calendar their annual leave in 2022 to bring the projected accrual down. Close down maintenance Whilst the business is closed to trading book in the necessary trades now to do any necessary maintenance. It would also be a fantastic opportunity to deep clean the business premises ready for a fresh 2022 opening. Returning from close down For those business who have little face to face interaction with customers and have had staff working from home … review how, when, how often or if staff will be returning to the office environment. We see many businesses who will not be returning to the same all staff in the office culture that was pre-COVID. Plan and communicate this with your staff about what will be happening and what is expected. There are a variety of options ranging from all staff continuing to work from home (and no longer having a central office), a 3 day week in the office with 2 days at home, etc. If you have not done so already and will continue to have staff working from home, ensure your Working From Home Policy is up to date and inclusive of OHS. Or is Christmas a hectic time for your business?
Remember that there are 4 public holidays in a row. If you plan to open on Monday & Tuesday 27th & 28th December budget the cost of employing staff at public holiday rates. Increase in the Demand For Fixed Interest Rates
FINANCE BROKER By Allan Houliston
Recent finance industry analysis has shown that more borrowers are taking advantage of the record low interest rates and securing fixed rates products and that these numbers are trending upwards when compared to the same time last year. This demand has potentially increased over recent months as some lenders have been increasing their fixed rates due to higher funding costs for longerdated loans and the need to manage pricing changes sustainably. This in turn has caused a ripple effect in the market, where borrowers fear that they may have ‘missed the boat’ in regards to locking in their ideal rate but look to the market to lock in the next best thing.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has insisted that it won’t raise interest rates until at least 2024 which bodes well for the Australian property market in general. However, several of Australia’s top economists are tipping that the RBA will lift the cash rate in the March quarter of 2023, despite of a predicted slowing in the housing market in 2022. Economists at CBA have even predicted that this first rate rise in the official cash rate will take place as early as November 2022. The RBA have stated that prior to any future rate rises, that the bank will need to achieve its full employment and inflation objectives first. Another reason which could account for the significant rise in fixed rate home loans is due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which unfortunately has been part of the Australian way of life since early 2020. In times of uncertainty, consumers look to things that they can control and that give them certainty. By securing a competitive
interest rate on their largest household expense, it can give borrowers peace of mind for a specific period of time. When considering a fixed rate product, it’s worth considering the following factors. Lenders fixed interest rates will potentially differ for owner-occupied products verse investment loan products. Several lenders will also price their fixed rate products based on risk, e.g., a loan that represents 60% of the property value could attract a lower interest rate than a loan that represents 80% of the property value. Lastly some lenders may be particularly competitive over a specific fixed term but not so competitive over other fixed terms, e.g., market leading for their 3-year fixed term but average for their 4-year fixed term home loan. It therefore pays to speak to a broker who can offer a suitable product from a ‘whole of market’ perspective. It is also advisable to speak to your current lender first to see what they can offer, and the costs associated with changing products. There are always costs associated with moving your borrowing to a new lender but in the current competitive market, several lenders are offering cashback incentives post settlement ranging between $1500-$4000, which can assist in covering part or all of these costs. Borrowers can still secure a 3-year fixed rate home loan under 2% and there are 4 year-fixed rate home loans in the current market starting at 2.29%. Even if you decide to stay on the same deal and with the same lender, my advice is that you check every three years to ensure that the rate and product that you have is still competitive and the most suitable for you based on your personal circumstances and the current market conditions at that time.

e c n a Insur
FINANCIAL PLANNER By Mark Kruger
In the September and October issues of FIND Geelong, we looked at Life insurance and Total Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance. Life insurance is intuitive – we know what it is there for and when a payout might occur. Many people will have heard about TPD as it is common for people with industry super funds to have some there, usually bundled with Life cover. Apart from Income Protection, which we will discuss in next month’s edition, there is another insurance which fills a specific need in one’s insurance policies – Trauma or Critical Illness insurance. Trauma cover was introduced in Australia in 1986 and is designed to provide for families undergoing the emotional and financial stress of sudden illnesses and conditions requiring immediate treatment or those that may go on for a longer period. Think of cancer, heart conditions and strokes. Children still need looking after and regular bills would have to be paid – life goes on. What would happen to your family if one of these happened to you or your partner? There would be bills for doctors, hospitals, treatment, medications and more which will come quickly. You would clearly be off work and perhaps your partner as well if they need to be by your beside. Children still need looking after and regular bills would have to be paid – life goes on. Further, after something like that you are probably going to want to take time to recuperate and reassess as well.
Life cover isn’t relevant here. TPD usually has a 3-month waiting period and even then, the bar is set high as to whether or not a payout is justified. Income Protection only pays a percentage of income (not large lump sums) and even with a ‘short’ 30 day waiting period, payments occur 30 days in arrears, so that is a 60-day wait. It is worth checking your IP policy to see what your waiting period is – 90 days is not uncommon. That leaves Trauma cover. Trauma pays a tax-free lumpsum upon diagnosis of specified medical conditions in the insurer’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). Terms and conditions will vary between insurers, so do check those, but it is not uncommon for there to be a 90-day waiting period on certain conditions, you must survive for 14 days and have the condition diagnosed by two different doctors. It doesn’t matter if your treatment costs $5,000 or $5 million dollars, you will receive the sum insured or a portion thereof depending on the condition and terms of the policy. You don’t need to justify the amount received – no need to show medical invoices and you can spend it on whatever you wish. What is covered? Below is a non-exhaustive list of some of the conditions typically covered. These are relatively standard between insurers but do check the specifics of your policy and the specific terms of each condition. Common ailments and mental illness are not covered. Heart conditions: aortic surgery, heart attack, bypass surgery
Other conditions: varieties occupationally-acquired HIV, loss sight/hearing/limbs/speech.
15
of of
Who claims and why? Cancer, heart conditions and stroke are the main reasons of successful claims. In 2020 TAL Life paid 63% of its Trauma claims due to cancer. Think of Life and TPD – how often do we hear about someone dying or being TPD? Not that often (but the consequences are catastrophic and premiums reflect that). But how often do we hear about someone having cancer…? So is this an old person’s thing? Well, ‘old’ is a relative concept! Trauma claims increase substantially in one’s 30s and peak in the mid-40s to mid-50s age bracket. So naturally, if you leave it until that age to get cover, it will be more expensive. More information • You can’t own it or pay for it from super • Premiums are not tax deductible, but the payout is not taxable • Consider the ‘plus’ or ‘premium’ options which can provide partial benefits for less severe conditions Will I receive a payout? A recent APRA report highlights shows claims statistics for the financial year to 30 June 2021. 87% of Trauma claims via an adviser were paid out whilst 62% of group claims were paid. Of claims not paid, 41% were due to contract terms not being met. The bottom line Like any insurance, there are so many variables and it is very much an individual thing - what your neighbour has is probably not right for you. We will be happy to guide you through it and get properly covered.

How To Create Space And Time To Do It All!
RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe
“The key is not to prioritise what ’s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities” – Stephen Covey That can be tricky this time of year. As Christmas approaches, along with a reprieve from COVID confinement, it can be hard to be intentional as to how you will spend your time – meetings, luncheons, EOY gatherings, school activities, planning, finalising... all of it can seem an important way to meet our needs. But you’ve worked hard to get where you’re at and now is not the time to be distracted. One of the keys to running your business effectively is to know exactly how to prioritise what needs to be done, and when. The alternative is piles of to-do lists, disorganisation, random jobs and tasks, things forgotten and a slower growth of your business.
So why is it that some people ‘have’ time and others never ‘have enough’? Realistically, every one of us has access to the same amount of time. Perception. Time and the amount of time we have is based on our perception. Sharon Pearson of the Coaching Institute states “If you play at the level where you know you do what is important to you, and makes you feel good, and don’t do anything else, you will be able to assess what you value currently in your life and your business.” As humans, we have a preference for pleasure... we want this more than the feeling of pain. When a task is perceived as challenging, we relate this to pain... it’s going to be hard, I’ll have to concentrate, how long WILL it take me to do? So we justify with reasons to avoid doing it at all... and we take the more pleasurable option – the task that can be achieved quickly or easily and most definitely, more enjoyably. The results you are getting in your business right now will be a direct reflection of this simple principle. If you love starting projects, you will likely have lots in the pipeline, some great brainstorming sessions and probably
not a lot of profitable results on an ongoing basis. If you love going straight for the profit, at any cost, you will probably not have many fulfilling relationships around you – culture and motivation will be low level. You get the idea. Where we place our efforts, we will see the results. Results are a direct reflection of our efforts. Is it possible to change what we associate as pleasurable and what we associate as pain? What if you made a conscious decision to link your efforts to the results that you want? This can be done in two ways • •
Link huge pleasure to what needs to be done Make a decision to do what needs to be done, even if it causes you pain
LINKING PLEASURE TO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE Make a list of all the positives that come of the ‘painful’ activity. For example, if you don’t like goal setting, link more pleasure to it by writing the following;

MAKE A DECISION TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE, EVEN IF IT CAUSES YOU PAIN The only difference between ‘successful’ people and those that aren’t are how they push through, the discipline they can maintain to overcome fear and pain and do what needs to be done (instead of only what they like to do!) It is this kind of decision-making that will set you apart from the rest. It is discipline. It’s important to find balance in your role, to maintain the ability to ‘choose’ how you will spend your time, to meet your needs and continue growing. This technique gives you the freedom to do just that - to own your time and feel good about how you’re doing it.

From Overwhelm to Overwhelm How to Handle Overwhelm Heading Towards the Festive Season LIFE COACH & COUNSELLOR By Lou Lugsdin
What a year we’ve had. Covid-19 has continued to impact the way we live, and we’ve had to deal with ongoing change. Now, as we begin to learn to live again with fewer restrictions, we are still navigating change, and the new normal. At the same time, Christmas is approaching at the rate of knots, and the festive season can also prove to be chaotic and stressful for many. So, for many people, it means transitioning from overwhelm to another period of potential overwhelm. Both similar and both different. To cope, we need to understand overwhelm and we need strategies to move through the chaos. What does the word overwhelm mean? The exact meaning of overwhelm is, 1: to overcome completely (as with great force or emotion), the larger army overwhelmed the troops. They were overwhelmed with grief. 2: to cover over completely/submerge – waves overwhelmed the small boat. Verb – if you are overwhelmed by a feeling or event, it affects you very strongly and you do not know how to deal with it.
Symptoms of being overwhelmed. Feeling overwhelmed has many faces and levels. It could manifest as intense emotions, such as anxiety, anger, or irritability. It might create worry, doubt, or cause us to stop in our tracks, unsure of what to do next. Some people may have muscle aches and pains or dizziness. Others may cry, get frustrated, annoyed, or angry. It is also common to have poor memory, focus and concentration, and some people withdraw, feel nervous and unsure, and the list goes on.
overwhelming because its unknown or a new normal, it can be overwhelming because of the chaos, financial expense, expectations, busyness, and the list goes on. So how can we handle the overwhelm that the festive season can bring? When we find ourselves experiencing increased feelings of stress and overwhelm, we need to increase our selfcare and implement more techniques to cope with it.
Many people have experienced the different faces and levels of overwhelm over the past two years. We have had to adjust to a new normal which has meant dealing with change in all areas of life. Work, recreation, hobbies, socialising, family, education, relationships, connection, health, finances, career, and much more have been impacted. As humans we have a resistance to change as it provokes uncertainty. The unknown, what we haven’t experienced before, can be scary and overwhelming as it’s new. We haven’t experienced it yet so we are unsure how to navigate it and move through it.
Some suggestions and ideas to try –
The Christmas period can also be an overwhelming time for many. It’s not

telling yourself, “I get everything done that I need to get done!”, “Breathe and do one thing at a time!”, or “What is the most important thing that I need to do right now?”. I find breathing and mindfulness particularly beneficial for me. They are part of my regular self-care routine, but when I am under pressure, or experiencing increased levels of stress or overwhelm, I increase them. I recommend box breathing, and mindfulness activities using the apps Smiling Minds or CALM.

Keep Your TRAMS On Track BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins
We are getting closer to being back on track, across Victoria, at long last. As we have had a long hard look at that track and where it leads to, have we made the changes that are needed for the new way of shopping. Customer buying habits have changed over the last 20 months, since COVID changed our lives and our livelihoods forever. Getting our customers back requires more than just opening our doors. Looking specifically at product retailers, we need to have innovation and creativity to draw our customers back into our stores and entice new customers. Sadly many of your competitors have closed their doors forever. Their customers are still buying products. With this competition gone their customers are looking for somewhere to buy those goods. Some will shop on’ line particularly for brands that are easily identified and identical to what is available in stores. This is particularly relevant in hard goods, homewares, and grocery lines. Many categories are still preferred to be shopped face to face as customers’ needs are met. Products such as soft furnishings, clothing, footwear, bedding, lighting, artwork are more tactile in nature. They need to fit properly, the colours may not be the same in real life as they are on the monitors. The shades may vary in different products or fabric may not be as nice as they look in photography. People who have never shopped online have had to resort to online shopping since the pandemic started. Many of these customers will go back to face to face shopping for a few key reasons: Fit, Fabric, Colour, Service, and the Shopping Experience. Stores will need to incorporate theatre into the displays, changing regularly in themes, reacting to consumer demand. Relate to local area events where applicable to your products, such as: Geelong Cup, The Melbourne Cup The Festival of Sails, The myriad of running races, bike races, Food and wine show, the Muscle festival, Pako Fest. By Planning
your marketing out in the coming months around topical events capitalises on the marketing money spent by others to drive customers to your business with associated goods. For those who have learnt to love online shopping and are less concerned / fussy about Fit, fabric, colour, service and not enjoy the shopping experience, the same ideals apply to your website. Is the website current? Does it have all products? Do you have products exclusive online that are not available in store? How often do you change the offer? What special offers do they include? Clearly the products need to be competitive, not cheap. What can you offer cost effectively as a bonus offer? Do you have stock or is it drop ship? Do your “window displays” match the offer? What support service can you offer that some others cannot, such as setting up in the home? Logistics, drop ship, etc.

Australia Ratifies Major Asia Trade Deal
21
Australia has ratified a massive free trade deal with Asia-Pacific nations but insists the move does not change the government’s “grave concerns” about the political situation enveloping fellow signatory Myanmar.
When in force for all 15 signatories, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership will be the world’s biggest trade agreement, covering 2.2 billion people and 29 per cent of global economic output.
The 15 nations included in the deal are Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei – along with Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday evening, Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Trade Minister Dan Tehan said ratifying the RCEP arrangement would ensure “farmers and businesses are able to access the benefits of what will be the world’s largest free trade agreement”. Australia’s businesses will have access to the deal, which will bring nine of the nation’s top 15 trading partners into a single economic framework, from January 1, 2022.
“RCEP will strengthen Australia’s trade relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian States (ASEAN) and signal our commitment to ASEAN-led regional economic architecture,” the statement said.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions had previously urged the Morrison government to refuse to sign the agreement, with ACTU President Michele O’Neil saying it would “finance and legitimise the military dictatorship” in place in Myanmar.
Australian But the statement from Senator Payne and Mr Tehan insisted Australia’s ratification of RCEP does Associated not change the government’s stance towards the Southeast Asian nation. Press There have been protests and unrest across Myanmar since the military staged a coup on February 1.
The army has been accused of atrocities and violence against civilians, while the junta says the unrest is fuelled by ‘terrorists’ allied with a shadow government.
“We call on the Myanmar security forces to cease violence against civilians, engage in dialogue, and release all those arbitrarily detained, including Australian Professor Sean Turnell,” the statement said. “The Government strongly supports ASEAN’s leadership to chart a course out of the crisis in Myanmar. “We will continue to work with our ASEAN and other partners to support regional efforts towards a resolution.”

Employees Spending Longer Working Unpaid Andrew Brown (Australian Associated Press)
Australians are working more unpaid hours than they were before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A new report by the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work found the average employee worked 6.13 unpaid hours each week in 2021, or eight standard working weeks per year. That’s compared to 5.25 hours per week in 2020 and 4.62 hours during 2019. The institute’s report, released to coincide with Go Home on Time Day, found $125 billion was lost in income from Australian workers during the past year alone. Centre for Future Work economist Dan Nahum said the pandemic and related lockdowns were making the situation for unpaid work worse.
“In many cases, it’s making it easier for employers to undercut Australian minimum standards around hours, overtime and penalty rates,” he said. “We’re seeing further incursion of work into people’s personal time and their privacy.” Workers aged between 18 and 29 performed the most unpaid overtime in the past year, at an average of 8.17 hours per week. Part-time employees were working for free for 4.5 hours per week while casuals were doing unpaid overtime for more than five hours every week. During the pandemic, more than onequarter of workers surveyed reported the employers’ expectations of work availability increased.
“This year, Australian workers are taking home a smaller share of GDP than we have ever seen before,” Mr Nahum said.
“Yet time-theft is rife and bosses are stealing record amounts of unpaid time from workers.” Almost 40 per cent of employees reported their workplace was monitoring them through technology such as web cameras or keystroke counters while at home. With more people working from home following COVID-19, the report said the nature of employees working unpaid hours had also changed.
“Now we must consider whether home work will become the new normal for many workers, even after the acute phase of the pandemic finally passes,” the report found. “Whether working from home or at a formal workplace, the problem of unpaid work continues to be severe.”

Feature Walls For Spring Renovations Feature walls can be made from stone, brick or look-alike stone or brick render. Coloured tape (like masking tape) is easy to apply and can brighten up a room when laid on in coloured diagonal strips. Brightly coloured and textured tiles look great in a bathroom of mostly muted beige, greys or white. As your children grow up, why not have some fun and educate them at the same time with a chalkboard wall where they can write and draw on. Timber walls can be made from recycled wood, a nice touch if your home has a historical heritage and you use some of the old wood for the feature wall. Vertical timber panels create a farmhouse style. In fact, timber slats can be placed in herringbone patterns, overlapping for a rustic feel, in squares or diamonds – be bold and innovative. The timber slats can be in the same colour as the flat surface of the wall behind or tricked out in a contrasting colour.
PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof
If you would like to use the warmer spring weather to refresh your home, you may not need to paint the whole of the interior. Sometimes a feature wall can do wonders. Paint or wallpaper?
Even though wallpaper is making a come-back, you may be hesitant about the technique of putting it up and the likelihood of taking it down. There are peel-and-stick options that make it easy to remove, but the best and safest solution is to hire a professional painter to do it for you. Where to put your feature wall
Feature walls can be constructed on walls of natural elements like stone or varnished wood, or manmade materials such as concrete or plaster. There is a large range of options in how to create your feature wall; in a brick veneer, timber or concrete house, painting or wallpapering are the usual methods.
Feature walls define a space. They can bring visual focus in large open-plan spaces, define rooms with combined functions such as dining-living rooms, and bedrooms and bathrooms where the walls are hidden by furniture. As their object is to highlight areas, it is not a good idea to plan a feature wall in a small room or one that is ‘busy’ with furniture, shelving and other materials.
Paint and wallpaper both come in a variety of colours and sheens. Paint is cheaper and easier to apply. You need to prepare the surface before painting, but you can try various colour patches on the surface to check how it looks in the light of different time of the day and evening. It is also easier to change the colour if you want another new look in years to come.
In a large area, the highlighted wall should be where the main feature is – where the mantelpiece or the TV is, or behind open-backed shelving containing photos or decorative items. The wall behind the bedhead or next to the shower are also possibilities. Ask yourself where your eye is drawn to, and that could be just the post for a feature wall.
Wallpaper is known for its durability, which you might need to consider if you have active children and high traffic areas. Be aware that wallpaper is not ideal for kitchens and bathrooms as the humidity in these rooms can cause it to peel away.
How creative can I get with a feature wall? How long is a piece of string? You are limited only by your budget, your space and your imagination.
Painting a wall doesn’t necessarily mean one contrasting colour. You could decide to have colour splashes in an abstract design, geometric patterns, stripes and so on. Whatever you choose, it must define the space and not overwhelm it. Even with one contrasting colour, your furniture should be in solid colours and simple patterns for the best, most restful appearance. For ideas and advice on the best showstopping feature wall for your space, give your local painter a call. They will have images to show you that will spark your imagination.

At Clutterbuck Electrical we are always getting asked by a lot of building owners, tenants, school principals and maintenance managers if they need Exit and Emergency Lighting. The Building Code of Australia (BCA) 2010 states this requirement for this in Section E, Part E4. In essence every class 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 building where the storey has a floor area more than 300m2 needs to have emergency and exit lighting. This includes shops, cafes, restaurants, milk bars, schools, offices, warehousing and some residential situations. All required Exit and Emergency lights must comply with Australian Standard AS2293.1 Exit and Emergency lighting provides lighting for occupants to safely exit a building when the normal lighting has failed due to power loss. Each exit and emergency luminaire is fitted with a battery and is required to provide light for at least 90 minutes after the power fails. Exit signs need to be clearly visible to the occupants of a building and illuminated at all times. They will be installed directly above exit doors, at the top of staircases and at any change of direction along the way to directing people along the “Egress path” escape route to a final exit or evacuation point. Emergency lights are installed at regular intervals around a building to illuminate the egress paths out of the building. The type of light, building shape and ceiling height will determine where they are required to be installed. What are the steps in planning emergency lighting? • • •
Walk around the premises noting large open areas and potential hazards in an evacuation. Identify what route people would take if an evacuation was to occur. Evaluate what fire safety equipment and evacuation measures are in place including fire fighting and first aid equipment, fire detection and alarm systems, location of evacuation hazards, employees’ understanding of escape routes and evacuation, testing of emergency equipment and high-risk areas of ignition.
•
•
Create and implement a plan of improvements to existing systems and equipment, including that the emergency lighting in place is adequate and compliant. A record of the improvements made to the emergency lighting must be documented and stored in a safe location. This must include a plan for testing the lighting on a regular basis. The emergency lighting document needs to be reviewed on a regular basis. Who can test Exit and Emergency lighting?
An appropriately qualified person such as a licensed electrician should be used to test and inspect the components of any style of emergency lighting system. The AS/NZS2293 standard includes requirements for testing of circuits and sensing of supply to the test facility which can only be performed by someone with the suitable qualifications. How do I know if my Exit and Emergency Lighting is working? Every exit sign and emergency light will have a visible LED Charge indicator in either a red or green colour.
If this indicator light is on it means that there is power to the fitting and that the battery is being charged. If the charge light is not illuminated, it means that either there is no power to the fitting or it has suffered a battery charging failure.
25
Demonstrating proof that the required repairs identified during the duration test have been carried out is necessary to demonstrate compliance. AS/NZS2293.2 outlines the Routine Service and Maintenance tasks that must be undertaken and recorded on a 6 monthly, 12 monthly and 10 yearly basis in order to ensure that the system operates correctly as per the installed design. These tasks undertaken during inspection, include but are not limited to:
- - - -
- -
Cleaning of exit signs and luminaire diffusers to remove dirt and insects Visual inspection of fittings for damage or obstructions Inspection of the duration test facility for correct operation Inspect that replacement fittings installed during maintenance match the classification and spacing requirements of the original design Check directional arrows on exit signs are labelled as per the original design Review of the maintenance and service records to ensure any defects or non-conformance recorded during the previous tests and inspections have been rectified.
One last thing, you may hear electricians talking about different types of exit and emergency lighting. There are two main types of lighting. Maintained and nonmaintained. What are the different types of emergency lights?
Each fitting will also have a test button next to the indicator, holding this button down will momentarily put the fitting into emergency mode.
• Maintained a maintained emergency light is continuously on and when the power fails it switches to a battery powered emergency output. • Non-maintained - a non-maintained emergency light is not normally lit and activates only when the power fails.
What do I do if I notice that one of my Exit and Emergency lights is not working?
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency lights?
Ideally steps should be taken to ensure an emergency lighting system is in perfect health and all fittings are operational at all times.
Non-maintained emergency lights turn on only during a power failure. Maintained emergency light illuminate continuously and continue to work during a power failure which enables them to function as both a standard light as well as an emergency light.
If you notice any fittings that are not working and pose a risk to occupant safety, you should report them to the maintenance contractor or other responsible party. That being said the twice-yearly scheduled duration tests will identify faults and list any defects or nonconformances for corrective action.

When Should You Change Your Will? LAWYERS By John Van Beveren
Wills are an important legal document, no matter your age. It is a legally binding document which outlines how your assets are to be distributed following your death. It is important you take the time to ensure your Will gives effect to your wishes. As difficult as it is to think about, we don’t want to leave the hard decisions to our families when they are grieving or suffering with our passing. Having a valid and accurate Will as well as other documents in place will alleviate a lot of the unnecessary concerns for the loved ones that we leave behind. A valid and effective Will is one that is tailored completely to you and your family needs that ensures the protection of your assets so that they pass to the beneficiaries that you intend. Circumstances that require your Will to be updated It is very important that you revisit your Will regularly, as different circumstances throughout your life may give rise to your Will being revoked or invalid. This is to ensure that your assets are passed to the people you actually intended and according to your wishes. Relationship changes in your life do have a significant impact on your Will, such as: •
Marriage automatically cancels a Will, unless your Will clearly states you were planning this marriage when you made it.
•
Divorce does not revoke the entire Will. Generally, it will revoke only any specific gifts to your former spouse but does not revoke the entirely of distribution of your main assets. Therefore, it is vital after a divorce to correctly revoke and update your Will if you do not want your former spouse access to your assets after you pass and possibly avoid a massive legal drama for your family.
•
If you separate, your former partner will still get your property unless you make a new Will. It is important that you make a new Will after the separation of any relationship so that it cancels your old one.
When you enter or end a de-facto relationship, your Will should also take this into account. Other life events where it is crucial to update your Will to ensure it is the most accurate and up- to-date document are: • • • •
• • •
Having children, including adopted or foster children, or grandchildren. Buying significant asset or investment, such as a house. Get involved in a new business, company or trust. Your Executor or Trustee appointed in your Will dies, becomes unwilling to act or becomes unsuitable due to age, illness or distance. A beneficiary under your Will dies. You sell of giveaway any asset that you had specifically gifted in your Will. Your financial circumstances change, including any changes to the entities or structures you hold.
How do I correctly revoke my Will? A Will can only be revoked under certain circumstances. Among these circumstances are: • • •
whether or not a later Will exists, whether there was a document declaring a revocation intention or whether the testator or someone in the testator’s presence and by his or her direction attempted to destroy or write on the Will with the intention of revoking it.
In Victoria, there are four ways to revoke a Will. They are by • creating a new Will, • writing, declaring an intention to revoke it executed according to the Wills Act • destroying the Will, or • by the testator or by someone else in his/her presence and at their direction writing on the Will or dealing with it in such a manner that the Court is satisfied that from the state of the Will, the testator intended to revoke it. The easiest and most recommended way to revoke a Will is simply by creating a new one. The new Will, if properly executed and includes language that states your desire to revoke prior Wills, will be found to indeed revoke any prior Wills. Although for small changes a “Codicil” (which is a separate legal document explaining these changes in the Will) can be used, it is important to note that once a Will has been signed, there can be no alteration by crossing out or writing in new clauses. A new Will is the best way to reflect any changes you want to make. How we can help at Van Beveren Lawyers?
At Van Beveren Lawyers we can help determine when and whether your Will should be updated. If you need to review your Will and want professional advice, then contact our compassionate team at Van Beveren Lawyers.

Chop, Change, and Edit Your Video - The Bare Video Basics Series VIDEO CONSULTANT By Zoë Wood
Welcome to the second of a three-part series of articles outlining the basics of video production. You can see my previous article in last month’s issue of this periodical. Let’s continue now with a focus on video editing. Getting your video ready for viewing by your customers, friends, and work family. Good news! The hardest part is done. Scripting, preparing, and filming your video is the hardest part of video production at any level. The editing process, in which you cut down your video and remove any unwanted seconds of the final product, is the purpose of this stage. You are editing the video for your viewer, be they customers, potentially new clients, or your family. Always keep them in mind when making decisions through the editing process. I highly recommend using RESTRAINT when editing. Spending too much time editing your video may lead to you becoming bored of it and never publishing it in the end. The simpler the process, espically for mobile video editing apps, the easier it will be for you and your brain.
For smartphone film makers, I recommend an app on both iOS and Android called InShot. You can find this FREE app by looking for the bright red logo, and the tagline “Powerful Video Editor and Photo Editor with professional features” in the description. Through my regular testing of new apps, this is the one that is simplest to use. You can find multiple tutorials on the Video Confidence Coach YouTube channel if you need any guidance. Like all free apps, there is the option to pay for it and remove any ads. However, InShot works best regardless whether you’re using the paid verson or not. Your second option is to move to a desktop computer or laptop to do your video editing. I highly recommend using an application called Filmora. It is easy to use and has lots of online tutorials to learn from. Your final option for those who have the funds and are in no mood to edit the videos themselves is hiring an editor. I highly recommend giving the video to someone else to edit for you. This can be done by getting in touch with someone you may know who has the skills, be they an employee, contractor, or family member. Paying them for their time, of course. If there isn’t someone you know who has video editing experience, why not reach out to professionals on websites like Fiverr, UpWork or AnyTask.
At the end of the day you want a video that is straight to the point, removes any major mis-speaks, and contains the information the viewer needs to thrive. Your viewer doesn’t care if you talk with your hands too much or you tripped over your words once or twice. They are there to be educated by you on your video message. If you liked this article, you’ll enjoy the rest of the series; “Get Your Gear On,” and “Upload Yourself Online.” These will be made available next month (December 2021), only in the Find Geelong magazine. See our upcoming videos on breaking down your video creation process, by searching Video Confidence Coach on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

2021 TA SA COVID-19 stimulus and relief package Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Australian Government has implemented a range of stimulus payments for residents and businesses. In response to the July 2021 South Australian lockdown: • businesses with a reduction in turnover are eligible for emergency cash grants of up to $3,000 • further grants of up to $6,000 for businesses who had a delayed reduction in turnover from the lockdown • specific business support grants of up to $3,000 available for businesses in eligible industries, with continuing top-ups paid automatically • eligible events suffering significant losses from being cancelled or postponed can access funding of up to $100,000, and • individuals outside the federal government’s declared hotspot areas who lose work hours will be

entitled to the COVID-19 Disaster Payment. In addition to these grant payments to affected businesses, in the past relief from payroll tax and land tax has been available. In particular, smaller employing businesses have been given a waiver of payroll tax from March 2020 to May 2021. Land tax deferrals were available to landlords during the 2020 land tax year. Also, landlords who provided rent relief, or commercial property owner-occupiers who were eligible for JobKeeper, were eligible for reduction in land tax liabilities up to 30 April 2021.
Queensland COVID-19 business grants and assistance In its response to the current COVID-19 lockdowns across August 2021, the Queensland Government has implemented support grants for businesses across the state. The support package is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland governments. The grants have recently been extended to include businesses on the border to NSW who have struggled due to the border closure. Assistance is available from 14 August 2021. Grants of up to $15,000 will be available to eligible small and medium businesses across all industries. Support payments of up to $30,000 will also be provided to eligible impacted large hospitality and tourism businesses. Applications for grants opened on 16 August 2021. Non-employing sole traders may

also be eligible for a one-off $1,000 grant, with more information to be released soon. A COVID-19 cleaning rebate of up to $10,000 has also been introduced for eligible small and medium businesses and not for profit organisations. Tourism and hospitality businesses have also been given the option to defer payment of their July or August 2021 monthly payroll tax liability for 6 months.
COVID-19 Disaster Payment to be phased out The COVID-19 Disaster Payment provides a federally funded assistance payment for people who have lost work in 2021 as a result of state-based lockdowns. Originating in June 2021, it has been recently announced that this tax-free payment will be phased out once a state reaches COVID-19 vaccination targets for eligible populations. Depending on when the payment is received, a recipient would receive between $320 and $750 per week. Those in receipt of other Government support would be entitled to either $100 or $200 per

week. The payment may also be available to individuals who have lost working hours and live outside a Commonwealth declared hotspot provided they meet other criteria. The accessibility of these payments is at the discretion of state-based policy. Like other support payments, it will be available through Services Australia. Further details on the payment and key eligibility dates can be accessed on the Services Australia website.
Victoria COVID-19 business grants and assistance The Victorian Government has recently announced that critical assistance and hardship programs for businesses will begin being phased out in October 2021. It is expected that most ongoing business support programs will cease once the state reaches a COVID-19 vaccination target of 80% of people aged 16 years and older. These support grants commenced in July 2021 for certain businesses impacted by the lockdown and was extended in September. Many of these payments are made automatically to businesses and sole traders that received grants under established COVID-19 support programs. The Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme has been reintroduced to provide support for eligible tenants and landlords. Other industryspecific support packages were also rolled out across 2020-21. Eligible businesses include those expected to be highly impacted by drops in turnover from extended COVID-19 restrictions, such as the alpine regions, Melbourne CBD or the City of Ballarat. Most of the grants assisted with unavoidable business expenses that are not support by other government funding.

Other support of up to $75,000 in rebates is also available for eligible impacted accommodation, hospitality and tourism businesses.
Tasmania COVID-19 stimulus package The Tasmanian and Australian governments recently announced a support package designed to assist micro and small businesses that are impacted by lockdowns and restrictions that are affecting other states. Grants of up to $110,000 will be provided to eligible businesses that have suffered a reduction in turnover as a direct result of lockdowns and border closures reducing the: •

The grants are available in 3 stages and businesses will need to meet eligibility criteria on multiple occasions in order to receive the full benefit. Applications for the grant opened on 17 August 2021 and will close on 8 October 2021. Payroll tax support will be available in the second half of 2021 for eligible industries.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT
Not-For-Profit of the Month
Wish You Were Back At School? Do you have an interest in education? Do you want to make a difference in your local community? If yes, then volunteering with EdConnect Australia may just be for you. Vicky Battin has been volunteering at Moolap Primary School for three years. Overtime she has supported students in various class year levels, with reading, maths and project work. “This has been a really enjoyable experience for me and I highly recommend it. I can actually see the difference I am making to the children’s learning,” said Vicky. “As I walk through the school grounds on arrival and departure, students I have worked with come up for a chat.” “Now that I’m retired, this volunteering role has really given me something to look forward to each week,” says Vicky. “I am here (for the students) as a friend, and a support to the teacher, and they all have accepted me as part of their class,” she says. “This is a very rewarding role and if you are looking to make a contribution, don’t hesitate, ring EdConnect and get involved. You won’t regret it.” EdConnect Australia is a school-based programme that matches volunteers with young people in schools who need additional support – either through one-on-one mentoring or various classroom learning support roles which also include library, gardening and breakfast club support. The volunteer’s interests are matched with a school that has compatible needs and comprehensive training is provided for the volunteers At the centre of EdConnect Australia is a belief in the power of relationships. For children to thrive, they need to be connected to and supported by an extended network of caring people with the time to listen and provide guidance. Programmes are designed to improve student’s literacy, life skills, self-esteem and self-confidence which contribute to improving learning outcomes and improved student achievements. Without support of this nature many students can become disengaged from school, usually resulting from behavioural and social skills problems or barriers they have developed towards learning. With the past 20 months being a disruptive time for students, the extra help and support EdConnect volunteers will give to students is more valuable and welcomed than ever before. How Best to Help Our Children Succeed at School As parents we all want our children to do well, so how can we help them be the best they can possibly be? The opportunity to attend school and learn in such ideal conditions like we have at LPS is a privilege which most of the world doesn’t experience. To realise our good fortune and to appreciate it is an excellent place to start in our thinking regarding our children’s education. The vast majority of the world’s population do not have 12+ years of education readily available. And only a very small percentage have the quality of education that we have. My wife and I spent 2 years teaching in Samoa and we’ve visited schools in a range of other undeveloped or developing countries including, Africa, Eastern Europe and Central America. Our conditions are so good! A few suggestions to help our children succeed:
•
Remind both ourselves and our children how fortunate we/they are to have such privileged education and life situations
•
Maintain a positive mindset and speak positive words about our children, our school, the children’s teachers
•
Encourage children to always do their best and remind them how important their education is – we should model the attitude that we want our children to have – they will follow suit
•
Read books together and alone – make it a daily routine
•
When issues arise (and they will – that’s life) stay calm and positive, allow sufficient time for children to settle, give opportunity to explain the situation fully, clarify the story with open ended questions – we develop resilience by working through difficult situations, so it’s important to face them head on and to deal with them well
•
Remember that the teachers and school personnel have our children’s best interests at heart – they will have tried their best but may not have always got it fully right – be patient
•
When the school needs to be informed of important information – consider the best way to impart relevant information, that will be the most helpful for everyone
•
Seek help when you need it – there is good help out there, ready to give support
All the best everyone. Rob Hunter LPS Chaplain Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.au

Help out our friends that are still at the shelter! This October we are asking our supporters to purr it forward and help the cats in shelter waiting for their happily ever after. On average, it costs around $30 per day to support one cat in the shelter and cover the cost of essentials such as food, veterinary care, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, a possible foster care stay, enrichment and everything else they need during their stay. This can easily add up to over $900 per month and varies greatly for each resident and length of their stay in the shelter.
We’re asking every animal lover to fundraise $300 to help out the cats still in the shelter. Getting involved and lending a paw (or hand) is easy! 1. Set up a fundraising page 2. Ask their friends to donate 3. Share share share #purritforward

Floating Tree Arrives In Victoria’s Christmas Capital The famous floating Christmas tree has arrived in Corio Bay this morning as the City of Greater Geelong proudly prepares to bring forward its free program of Christmas activities and entertainment across the region.
•
prior to COVID-19, the floating tree attracted 193,000 visitors
•
the tree will be in place until Friday 7 January 2022 (to align with Orthodox Christmas).
The 10-tonne tree was brought to Geelong Waterfront via a tugboat with assistance from GeelongPort.
Other highlights of the Christmas program include the projections on City Hall, festive street entertainment, School Christmas Tree program and the Giant Selfie Trail across 22 locations.
More than 261,000 people attended last year’s Christmas program, which generated more than $20 million in economic output for the region. The tree will be powered up from 8:30pm to midnight each day from early November. The free sound and light show lasts for six minutes and runs every 15 minutes. Visitors can enjoy the tree while observing COVID-19 safety measures or stream the show live from the comfort of their own home via Christmas at Geelong. About the tree: •
the 10-tonne steel Christmas tree was constructed by Geelong manufacturer Hanlon Industries in 2014
•
the tree is 25 metres tall and made up of 400 LED lights and 11,000 reflective discs
•
the star is four-meters wide and gently rotates with the wind direction
The hashtag for 2021 is #GeelongChristmas. For more information visit Geelong Christmas. Decorating the floating tree is not a simple task, and lighting experts from Geelong company Total Events spend almost a week testing and programming the LED lights.
Mayor Stephanie Asher “We love Christmas in Geelong so there’s nothing better than seeing the floating tree make its way to waterfront. Christmas in Geelong is a multicultural celebration and such a source of pride and joy for our community. For the first time, the tree will be put together and tested in Steampacket Quay so you can see all the action up close Our Christmas program creates jobs for tradies, lighting experts, and children’s entertainers as well as generating income for hard working small business owners. It’s no surprise that a recent survey found that 94 per cent of participants believe our Christmas program is important for Geelong. The Greater Geelong community has done an amazing effort in getting vaccinated, and we’re hopeful that this year the community can safely celebrate Christmas and the traditions we know and love.”

While we will attend to all requests, because of the large volume of work it may take up to a month for all trees and branches to be removed.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher
We ask that Bellarine Peninsula residents bring their proof of residence, to receive our subsidised service. The storm-damaged timber can be dropped off in domestic-sized trailers from Wednesday 3 November until Sunday 14 November. For those unable to take fallen trees and branches from their properties to the Drysdale facility, we are still here to help clear the material. We know that many residents have been impacted and suffered property damage or had trees or branches fall on their properties during the recent storm. The clean-up continues to be a big job. Our crews have been inundated with more than 420 requests for help with fallen trees or branches, which will take them several weeks to properly respond to.
If you have not done so already, please lodge a request for service before Sunday 14 November. Trees and branches must be publicly accessible, as our crews will not be going onto private property.
“We understand this has been a challenging and distressing period for many residents. Hopefully this free drop-off initiative makes the clean-up that little bit easier. We thank the community for showing patience while City crews work through an extremely high number of requests for service as quickly as possible.”
Please stack material neatly on your nature strip and ensure that there is still access for pedestrians to pass by.

Geelong Waterfront Train & Bungy Trampolines If you’re looking for fun things to do with kids in Geelong, then the Waterfront is the perfect place for you. Along with the kids’ activities we’ve already listed here, kids get a buzz out of the Waterfront train and Four Bay Bungy Trampoline. The train runs return trips from the Carousel to the Eastern Beach pools. The ride takes around 20 minutes and leaves every half hour (every quarter-hour in peak season). Kids can somersault and jump 7 metres high (!) at the Bungy Trampoline. Located near the Carousel, there’s a 5-minute jump guarantee (longer when there’s no queue). Open weekends, school, and public holidays from September to May.
Cunningham Pier Geelong
Cunningham Pier is one of the most recognisable structures on the Geelong Waterfront. Opening in the mid-1850s it was originally known as Railway Pier. It was an important part of the Geelong Port and you can still see the train lines that were used to transport cargo to the end of the pier. The pier stretches 250 metres out over Corio Bay and its bright white building is a standout feature of the foreshore. The two-storey weatherboard building houses the Wah Bar and Asian food restaurant (bao buns!), Wah Wah Gee. The Pier Geelong function centre is also located here. A large part of this Geelong pier is dedicated to car parking and a convenient covered walkway provides shelter as you walk along the train tracks. Cunningham Pier fishing has always been popular and in keeping with tradition, local anglers continue to use it.
The Poppy Kettle Playground This Geelong playground was inspired by a children’s book written by local author Robert Ingpen. The story focuses on a group of miniature people from Peru, who set sail in an old tea kettle to find the land ‘beyond the horizon’ and eventually come to rest in Geelong. Bronze statutes of the Poppy Kettle people are scattered around the park giving it a fairy tale quality. Other features include an interactive water fountain, a sea dragon, an awesome slide and climbing tower, and a terrific pyramid climbing net. There’s plenty of lush grass to picnic on, public toilets, and there’s usually an ice-cream and hot jam donut van parked nearby.

Geelong Skate Park Geelong is heaven for skaters as there are more skate parks in Geelong per capita than any other district in the country. And there’s no better location for a skate park than right beside the bay at Waterfront Geelong. The Youth Activities Area to the west of Cunningham Pier is an outdoor plaza-style park. It has a variety of street obstacles including ledges, stairs, rails, and bank ramps. The park also features a basketball ring, bench seating, openair performance areas, and stereo music. Events designed for young people are held here throughout the year, many of them are free.
Western Beach People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s. In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.
Rippleside Park Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past enroute to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces. NOVEMBER 2021 | FIND GEELONG

Start A Community Project RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly
As a senior, you would normally have some flexibility in your daily schedule. This of course is what those still in the workforce dream about, however if you allow idleness to develop, that will have an adverse impact on your zest for living. Now the current probability statistics show that for anyone aged 65 today, your “estate event” – that’s a polite expression used by the retirement planning industry – is likely to occur for a male at age 93 and for a female at age 95. But of course, those figures are only the average. Obviously over half of us will be living well into our 90s. So how will you occupy your time? How can you develop relationships? How can you maintain your mental and physical health?
My current research suggests the solution is to establish a community project. Let me give you an example. There’s a vacant school site near where I live, and it’s nicely overgrown with trees and shrubs and the concrete pads for the classrooms are all still there. Effectively it’s been abandoned by the government, but the concern is that someday a bureaucrat will have a need to sell it off. Even with very little open space remaining locally, it probably will be sold for a housing development.
And they are really easy to start – just post a series of posts on your local community noticeboard on Facebook, asking for anyone with a similar concern to meet you for coffee – probably at your home, at 11.00 am on Saturday. Perhaps only a handful will turn up. But that’s enough. Allocate tasks and “portfolios” to these core members, and set them the task of establishing a series of achievable goals. Your goal of maintaining your personal zest for living will then be well underway.
It needs Protection. Now there will be pockets of land in your locality which will similarly need a Protector – and that’s you! Every Community Project will have elements how a charity operates – such as grants, volunteers, donations, an extended timeline – but it’s really more likely to be called a “social enterprise” with a Social Mission.

This means that from Friday 22 October 2021, people over the age of 16 must show they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of entry to some businesses. To support businesses as they talk to their customers ahead of the new requirements, the following communications resources have been developed.
You can help by: Sharing the resources from this stakeholder pack with your network. Direct people to the Victorian Government’s coronavirus website for all current information and updates: CORONAVIRUS.vic.gov.au
Guides and templates for you and your workers
How To Check the Vaccination Status of your Customers Customer checks in using QR Code All customers must check-in using the Service Victoria QR code

Customers without a smart phone will be required to present a valid certificate from the Australian Immunisation Register or a printed copy of their COVID-19 vaccination certificate to prove their vaccination status. It is important for venue staff to cross check this information with a valid form of photo ID such as a drivers’ licence. In addition to proving their vaccination status with venue staff, it is important for these customers to checkin to help contact tracers in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak.
Kiosk Check-in service The Kiosk check-in service in the Service Victoria app enables workers to check-in customers and visitors who can’t check-in for themselves. This is a simple electronic form to help staff record a visitor’s first name, family name and contact phone number on the venue’s device. Step 1: Log in to the Victorian Government QR Code Service Step 2: Select the location / area of your venue where you would like to have Kiosk check-in available Step 3: Nominate a Kiosk Contact, by clicking on the pencil icon to edit the screen Step 4: Enter the Kiosk Contact details – If the location contact details are the same for the Kiosk Contact, tick the ‘Copy existing location contact details’ checkbox and select ‘Save’. The contact details will be copied across automatically – If you would like to nominate a different Kiosk Contact, enter their details in the Kiosk Contact details section and select ‘Save’ – The Kiosk Contact will receive an email with an 8-digit Kiosk code and instructions for setting up Kiosk check-in on your selected device. Ensure that your device is online Step 5: Visit the Kiosk check-in on your device and bookmark the link in your browser Step 6: Enter the 8-digit Kiosk code we sent to your Kiosk Contact and select ‘Next’ Step 7: Enter the Security Code (a one-time password that is emailed to the Kiosk Contact after they enter the Kiosk code) and select ‘Verify’
