To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. Victoria Taxpayers Will Pay For Future IVF Treatments By Warren Strybosch
Having a child is something most of us just take for granted. However, for some it becomes an emotional rollercoaster ride when they find out that they cannot have a child via natural means and need to consider alternative solutions. The world’s first In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) occurred in 1973 and Australia had their first IVF birth in 1980. The first baby born from a frozen embryo was in 1983 and since then IVF success rates have increased from 1-9 successful births to over 50% of successful births. One of the biggest hurdles for people wanting to try IVF was the cost associated with the procedure. Not anymore. The Andrews Labor Government is making it easier for more Victorians to achieve their dream of becoming parents by establishing the first public fertility care service in Victoria and asking Victorian taxpayers to cover the majority of the costs of those treatments. Minister for Health Martin Foley has stated, “We’re removing the financial barrier faced by too many families and making IVF easier, fairer and more affordable – it will be life changing for thousands of Victorian families every year.” “Our policy will save Victorian families up to $10,000 each year, ensuring that bank balance is no barrier to becoming a parent.”
The Victorian Budget 2021/22 will invest $70 million to establish public fertility care services, which will help up to 4,000 Victorians every year – saving them on average $10,000 each. The funding includes $20 million to improve public hospital facilities to deliver the services, while $50 million will be invested to provide up to 2,700 free treatment cycles and a range of other fertility care services to up to 4,000 Victorians per year.
with services expected to start in a phased approach from 2022. It is estimated public IVF will deliver on average savings of $10,000 to eligible Victorians, depending on their individual circumstances. This investment will also create jobs for more Victorians, with roles as fertility specialist doctors, nurses, counsellors, laboratory scientists and support staff.
This investment will deliver on the Labor Government’s commitment to create public IVF services, while also establishing Victoria’s first public sperm and egg bank.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you think it is fair for Victorians to take upon themselves the financial burden of paying for these IVF treatments, whilst those who are wanting to use the services do not have to pay as much or anything at all?
Public fertility care will make a real difference to thousands of Victorian families,

NAPLAN Results - Victorian Comes Out In Front Despite Lockdowns. By Warren Strybosch
Despite COVID, Victorian students have recorded the highest NAPLAN results. Year 3 students in Victoria continued improving on previous year’s results as they topped the class in reading, numeracy, and grammar and punctuation Victoria’s year 5 students also lead the nation in reading, numeracy, writing, and grammar and punctuation. Year 7 students improved in reading, writing and spelling compared to 2019 and scored the highest scores of any jurisdiction for reading and numeracy skills while Year 9s topped the nation in spelling. “These phenomenal results are more than statistics - they represent thousands of Victorian kids who will be afforded better opportunities through education, no matter where they live or what their background,” education minister James Merlino said. “We’re so proud to be building a world-class education system that gives every student the opportunity to shine - and I want to thank every educator, principal, family and school community across Victoria for helping us get here.” In secondary schools, more students are achieving the top two bands of reading compared to 2019 and there are less students in the bottom two bands.

China Reduces Screen-Time For Games Down To 3-Hours Per Week By Warren Strybosch
China has introduced a new social intervention for under-18s. They have restricted the number of hours a child can play video games to no more than three hours a week – not three hours a day but three hours per week. The limit will be for one hour a day - 8 pm to 9 pm - on only Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, according to the Xinhua state news agency. Personally, I think China is onto something here as research has shown the increasing health risks of playing video/computer games for long hours. A research paper conducted by Peter Grinspoon (2020), found that ‘gaming’ was associated with obesity in teens, vision problems, and psychological problems. Gaming is yet to be considered an addiction, but internet gaming disorder (IGD) is a real syndrome experienced by a lot of gamers. Psychological Association, IGD is defined as experiencing at least five of the following nine criteria over a 12-month period:
• • • • • • •
gaming preoccupation withdrawal tolerance loss of interest in other activities downplaying use loss of relationship, educational, or career opportunities gaming to escape or relieve anxiety, guilt, or other negative mood states
• •
failure to control continued gaming despite psychosocial problems.
It is estimated that up to 1% of the American population might have an internet gaming disorder and this can be assumed to be the case in most countries where teens have access to computers and the internet. It is no wonder China has come down hard on ‘gamers’ in their own country, as they try and curb the growing addiction which has been described as something akin to a “spiritual opium.” The new rules will apply to all devices including mobile phones and has gotten many global gaming companies concerned given the higher number of teens in China who play their games. The Chinese games market was estimated to make $A62.5 billion of revenue in 2021, ahead of the United States, according to analytics firm Newzoo, but these new rules will definitely put a dent in these estimates. China, is trying to curb the high number of runaway youth and believes gaming is one of the major reasons why youth are becoming more anxious, less tolerant, withdrawn and finding it more difficult to relate to others, including their own parents. “Teenagers are the future of our motherland,” Xinhua quoted an unnamed NPPA spokesperson as saying.
“Protecting the physical and mental health of minors is related to the people’s vital interests and relates to the cultivation of the younger generation in the era of national rejuvenation.” Gaming companies will be barred from providing services to minors in any form outside the stipulated hours and must ensure they have put real-name verification systems in place, said the regulator, which oversees the country’s video games market. With COVID and the resulting lockdowns, it is likely that Australian teens are spending more time in front of their screens playing games. Rather than cutting off their gaming time or reducing it down to 3 hours per week, we encourage all parents to be mindful of the ICD criteria’s and if a child is presenting with five or more of them, to find helpful ways to reduce their screen time, or seek professional help in dealing with this matter before it becomes a serious issue. Do you have a teen living in your home? Has screen time increased during COVID? What strategies have you come up with to encourage your teen to be off screens? We would love to hear from you. Mental Health and Wellbeing “payroll” Surcharge - Another Cost to Victorian Businesses By Warren Strybosch
The Andrew’s Labor government has decided that Victoria taxpayers will need to cover the ever-increasing mental health costs the government continues to face. The Victorian State Revenue Office has advised that the “mental health and wellbeing surcharge” will commence from 1 Jan 2022, which is payable on Victorian taxable wages paid or payable from 1 January 2022 by an employer or a group of employers. The surcharge will be payable if Victorian taxable wages are paid and the Australian wages exceed the first annual threshold of $10m. The surcharge is payable at the same time that payroll tax is payable. Separate returns will not be required. What is difficult for a lot of business owners to swallow is the fact that Victoria has experienced the most severe and extended lockdowns than any other place in the world. This has, by its very nature, increased mental health issues for many Victoria’s, and with the introduction of this new payroll surcharge, seems to be another slap in the face to those running a business.
with safety regulations, and the company expects to continue to meet its current financial obligations throughout this process,” the company said. As losses piled up for the beleaguered aviation sector, the Duterte government has continued to be reluctant in spending taxpayers’ money to rescue local airlines on the brink of financial collapse, unlike regional counterparts that handed bailouts to their cash-strapped carriers like Malaysia and Thailand. PAL has weathered past crises before. In 1999, the airline was placed under receivership after facing a series of labor strikes while grappling with the Asian Financial Crisis and a $2 billion debt driven by its ambitious expansion plans at the time. But the coronavirus pandemic is a different kind of crisis for the company, which sank the airline deeper into the red in 2020 to mark the fourth consecutive year that it recorded hefty losses. By Xave Gregorio
The Chapter 11 filing, which allows a company to continue operations while it restructures its finances, was a product of discussions with key shareholders, PAL said, adding the plan will not affect passengers and employees. The company will also complete a parallel filing for recognition in the Philippines under the Financial Insolvency and Rehabilitation (FRIA) Act of 2010. “We welcome this major breakthrough, an overall agreement that enables PAL to remain the flag carrier of the Philippines and the premier global airline of the country,” billionaire Lucio Tan, company president and CEO, said. To stay liquid during the recovery process, PAL said existing shareholders and local banks agreed to infuse $505 million in new debt and equity financing to the company. The carrier said it will gradually increase domestic and international flights to match any improvements in market demand. Once the bankruptcy protection is over, PAL will borrow $150 million from foreign investors “to facilitate post-restructuring activities”. “PAL will continue to operate flights in the normal course of business in accordance with
In the first half, PAL Holdings Inc., the airline’s parent firm, narrowed its net loss by 20% year-on-year to P16.56 billion. Operating expenses fell nearly 49% onyear during the period, with manpower costs also declining after the company started shedding 2,300 workers in March while those who managed to stay took big pay cuts. “We are grateful to our lenders, aviation partners and other creditors for supporting the plan, which empowers PAL to overcome the unprecedented impact of the global pandemic that has significantly disrupted businesses in all sectors, especially aviation, and emerge stronger for the long-term,” Tan said.

Emissions Cuts Need To Be More Ambitious
Paul Osborne and Georgie Moore
(Australian Associated Press)
Australia should be cutting its emissions 21 times faster than at present if it is to play a key role in addressing climate change, the Climate Council says.
“For Australia to play its part, the Climate Council says it should be aiming for a 75 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions below 2005 levels by 2030,” Mr Baxter said.
New national data shows emissions for the 12 months to March were 494.2 million tonnes, down 27.8 million tonnes, or 5.3 per cent, relative to a year earlier.
“This would equate to emissions cuts occurring 21 times faster than what the federal government is managing.”
The figure is 20.8 per cent below 2005 levels, the baseline year for Australia’s Paris target, and the lowest level since records began in 1990.
Energy Minister Angus Taylor said the government’s approach was the right one, given that the emissions cuts had come at the same time as economic growth.
Declines in the transport sector and electricity emissions, down 13.1 million and 9.7 million tonnes respectively, were the largest contributors as COVID-19 reduced air and road travel and more renewable energy came online. In the year to June, emissions from the national electricity market fell 4.6 per cent to a new record low. Climate Council senior researcher Tim Baxter said being on track to cut emissions by one third of one per cent a year over the next decade was a “snail’s pace”.
“While there is still work to be done, this data shows the government’s comprehensive suite of policies to meet its emissions reduction commitments, encourage innovation and back new and emerging low emissions technologies are working,” Mr Taylor said. There had also been a decline in industrial emissions over the past year. A 1.5 per cent drop in emissions from stationary energy reflected a small decline in LNG exports.
Fugitive emissions were also down 8.3 per cent. This was in part due to Western Australia’s Gorgon carbon capture and storage project and a fall in coal production. Australia remains under pressure from global leaders, and the business and environmental lobby, to commit to net zero emissions by 2050. But Prime Minister Scott Morrison has only committed so far to achieving this target “as soon as possible”. The government continues to tout it’s on track to overshoot its 2030 Paris target of cuts between 26 and 28 per cent. It has flagged a new forecast on progress to be published later in the year. Labor leader Anthony Albanese said climate would be a key issue at the next election, pledging support for cheaper electric vehicles, community batteries and a national transmission plan to stabilise the grid. The next major stocktake on global climate action will occur at the COP26 summit in Glasgow in November.

Accountants No Longer Want To Provide Financial Planning Advice - It's All Too Hard And Costly ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch
For many years, accountants looked down on financial planners. After all, financial planners supposedly caused all the financial crises that we have all experienced over the last 20 years, they took commissions for doing nothing, and simply sold products. Not so for accountants, who unlike the financial planners, provided a service that everyone required e.g., tax returns, and were the only ones who ever provided sound advice. I do say this with a bit of tongue in cheek, but you can be assured that is how some accountants viewed financial planners a few years back. How things are changed.
limited licenses by accountants, which reach its peak take up in 2018. In December 2018, when there was close to 29,000 financial advisors offering advice, almost nice per cent (9%) were made up of accountants.
In July 2012, the FoFA reforms were introduced. Out of the FoFA reforms was born the Ripoll Report, which examined the collapse of some big-name financial institutions Storm, Trio, Opes Prime, that resulted in many ordinary ‘mum and dad’ investors losing a lot of their money even though they were just following the advice of their financial planners, advisers and even accountants. FoFA introduced to protect consumers, and to enable ordinary consumers to obtain access to more affordable and competent financial advice. As part of the reforms the government decided that all financial advice should be afforded the same level of regulatory rigour, irrespective of who delivers that advice. That is, whether a financial planner or an accountant provides advice to a client, the client should still expect the same level of competence and protection from the law. Consequently, this meant that the accountants’ exemption relating to SMSFs had to be removed. After much debate and argument, it was decided that SMSFs are a financial product and therefore had to be included in the FoFA reforms. However, the experience of accountants was acknowledged and the government agreed to deem that accountants had relevant experience (normally this has to be proved to ASIC). This applies only to members of the Joint Accounting Bodies (JAB) (IPA, CPAA and CAANZ) with a PPC and during the transition period.
Source: AR Data
Since 2018, and after the introduction of the FASEA Code of conduct, higher education standards, a FASEA exam that all advisors had to sit, including accountants, and most importantly, the burgeoning increase in costs to be able to be able to give advice in this space, there has been a sharp decline in the number of accountants holding on to their limited licenses. Since 2019, there has been approximately 28 accountants every month handing back their limited license to ASIC which has reduce the number of accountants able to provide limited advice down to about 1300 accountants.
This was a major concession. Other concessions were also won, including the introduction of a limited license with an advice scope broader than under the exemption; and providing an annual compliance certificate instead of a full audit (which financial planners have to do).
What is interesting to note is that the cost to be able to provide advice has nearly doubled with most advisors having to now pay approximately $45,000 to their respective licensee per annum. When you add on PI, software fees, and association fees, that are mandatory to be able to provide advice, the costs can jump up to easily $60,000 per year. With financial advisors now having to pay ASIC levy fees on top of already high yearly running costs, you can understand why accountants are reluctant to stay in the game of providing financial planning advice. After all, their licence costs, including software, is easily under $5000 per annum – chalk and cheese when comparing accountant costs vs financial planning costs of running a business.
A three-year transition period was also granted, ending on 30 June 2016. Most of the FoFA reforms have not directly impacted accountants. The impact has been mostly on financial planners – including the changes around conflicted remuneration, opt-in, to name a few. It should also be remembered that the accountants’ exemption was introduced as a temporary measure during the last round of financial reforms, until a more permanent solution could be developed. However, ‘temporary’ lasted for about ten years during which time establishing SMSFs became embedded for many accountants. This was evident with a large take up of
Given, the government had formed the view that many accountants were operating in breach of the exemption, they decided they either had to have a limited license to be able to provide advice or become a fully qualified financial planner. However, after the Haynes Royal Commission and the introduction of the FASEA Code of Conduct, it was decided that anyone who wanted to provide financial planning advice, regardless of the type of license they held, needed to have the same qualifications e.g., minimum Bachelor related to financial planning and had to pass the FASEA exam. Given only 60% of those sitting the FASEA exam in August passed, it is likely we will

see more accountants and financial planners exit the industry. It is expected that the numbers will reduce from the 29,000 advisors to approximately 15,000 advisors by 2026 when all education requirements have to be met. We are close to 19,000 at this present time. Of those who are accountant firms remaining, many are handing in their limited licenses and there are now less accounting advisors per limited license; approximately 1.6 advisors per limited advisors, from the highs of 2 per limited license.
9
With the ever-increasing fees associated with providing personal advice, which includes SMSF advice, higher education standards, and increased compliance requirements to make sure the advice is appropriate, it is likely more accountants will not want to work in this space, and more accountants will give up their limited licenses. Given that many accountants service SMSF clients, it will be interesting to see what accountants will do with regard to the provision of advice. If they do not have a license to provide the advice (and having the SMSF Specialist designation is not a license), then accountants will need to refer their clients on to a financial advisor that specialises in the SMSF space. At Find Accountant, we are doing just that. Whilst we have an accountant who is also a qualified financial planner which SMSF certifications, we felt it was best that the accountant looks after the tax side of SMSFs and a different advisor looking after the financial planning side of the SMSF. As such, we have invited a SMSF financial planner to join the Find Group so that we have a tax SMSF specialist and a financial planner SMSF specialist working under the same business and providing a comprehensive service to future SMSF clients. This will also enable us to avoid any conflicts of interest e.g., not just having one person providing tax and financial planning advice to SMSF trustees.
Source: AR Data
With the decrease in advisors, there will be fewer advisors having to carry the burden of covering the ever-increasing costs associated with being a financial advisor. For instance, the ASIC levy is paid proportionately amongst all advisors, so the fewer there are the higher the levy will be per advisor. This will result in more accountants leaving the industry.
At Find Accountant, we provide SMSF tax advice. Our senior accountant is also an award-winning financial advisor. If you require SMSF advice or are considering whether or not to wind up your SMSF, then speak to Warren Strybosch at Find Accountant Pty Ltd.
Not only are fees increasing but accountants are worried about the proposed Compensation Scheme of Last Resort that is likely to be introduced next year, which will required advisors to pay another levy to cover future compensation payments to consumers who suffer a loss as a result of inappropriate advice provided.

How To Make IT Happen In Leadership – Whatever It Is!
to for too long – they become ‘our story’- when holding on to everything, it becomes really heavy. Giving ourselves permission to reset, to know that when you have a challenge, you can sit with it and then let it go... it’s vital and it’s something everyone can do. We can handle things better in small chunks and this is important to recognise as you move forward towards your goals and you continue to come across challenges. To reset is to make the conscious decision to, it does not have to be learned. Leadership is a reflection of us, it is who we are, it is our ‘being’. A true leader embraces their role and allows it to be an extension of who they are at their core - whilst always striving for growth, for the desire to BE better. Some leaders feel that they need to HAVE more to be better – HAVE more support, more skill, more experience. This mindset can leave leaders perplexed as to why their employees don’t like them or trust them. By focusing on the HAVE, (something we are yet to obtain) we are always wanting, yearning, seeking, not happy or present with the NOW.. and this can actually stop you from achieving greatness. “When I have enough support... then I’ll bring in that new project” When we focus on the BEING, who you need to BE, then you begin to think and behave as if. “Who do I need to BE, to ensure that project runs smoothly and I get maximum support”. You see, you then walk as if you are already that person in that role.
RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe
“Today you are You, that’s truer than true. There is no one alive who is Your than You” - Dr Seuss As a leader, it seems now more important than ever to lead by example, to be true to yourself, to lead with authenticity, vulnerability and action. Leading in such a way brings legitimacy and honesty to your relations with your followers, ensuring an ethical and valuebased foundation- a productive and creative workplace. In contrast, leading with uncertainty, perfection, lack of self-awareness, close-mindedness or falseness leads to a feeling of deception and lack of desire to serve, commit, be motivated or inspired.
Even in this time of volatility, we must still show the will to grow, to succeed, to move forward, to lead... particularly if we want the trust, commitment and connection of our team. The question is what if we don’t feel that way? What if we don’t feel capable of such leadership? I mean after all, we have an ego, a past, our own demons as well. The answer is if you genuinely do not feel that you are a transparent, selfaware, fair-minded, moral leader... then it’s time to embrace your role, reset and strive for your best version of leader. It’s important to continually hit the reset button as you grow into your ultimate leadership role. Holding on to things will hold you back. We all have our challenges and often they are held on
As you plan and commit to being the best leader you can, whether it be to reinvent or to enhance your current ability, following the idea to embrace who you need to BE, using the BE DO HAVE GIVE Model will ensure success. The well-known BE DO HAVE principal refers to the attainment of success. As mentioned, it is where you first define who you want to BE, and then walk as if you are already that person in that role. When we are clear on who we want to BE then we know what the first thing is that we need to DO in order to get the result that we are after (what we will HAVE). The addition of the word GIVE is where the real fulfilment comes from... when we HAVE what we desire, we are able to more freely GIVE. When we GIVE, we instantly grow rich. (Hint: This model also works by beginning with GIVE - What do I need to GIVE in order

to have what I would like to HAVE (to achieve), so that I can DO what I would like in order to BE who I would like to BE.) ‘BE’, in this model, refers to who you need to authentically BE in order to make your goal happen. And this ‘beingness’ is something that we can all do RIGHT NOW. We can be anything we choose to be. What do I mean by that? I don’t mean I can go and be a professional swimmer right now. That simply won’t happen! What I’m talking about, is I can be the end result. When we say we want to BE something, it’s because we want to BE the end result – we want that feeling. We do things, we purchase items, we chase experiences because we want the feelings that it gives us... we want to BE that way. To create your own version of success and determine who the best version of you will BE, we must look outside of what is ‘normal’. We need to look to the attributes that successful people demonstrate. What is it that they are doing differently, that is driving their success?
This is called modeling. It is a form of learning through imitation. By observing someone else’s behaviour and choosing aspects that you aspire to and applying changes that match to your own behaviour, cognition or emotional state. Effective modeling comes down to viewing, reflecting and practice. When deciding on someone to model, consider what qualities you need to embrace and enhance within you to assist you moving forward.
11
Moving forward to achieve your goals, work on telling yourself, daily “I am ............ (insert model/goal here)” and act ‘as-if’ until you get there. Remember when you wholeheartedly ‘try on’ the attributes that are needed to BE, then naturally, you’ll begin to DO something about it, to make it more real, more plausible, more YOU! Soon enough, you will HAVE what you are after and really be able to serve and GIVE back to your team.
The following two questions will give that starting point of knowing who you want to BE so you can begin doing what you need to DO and/or GIVE! 1. LIST 3 PEOPLE WHO YOU ADMIRE AND CHOOSE TO MODEL, STATING WHY: (Hint: you can model different traits in different people eg one for business management, one for people skills, one for wealth etc) 2. BASED ON YOUR DECISION, WHAT ARE 3 THINGS YOU CAN STOP DOING RIGHT NOW? (that do not suit/fit in with this new way of ‘BEING’)

Recent Changes To Casual Worker Entitlements LAWYERS By John Van Beveren
On 27 March 2021, changes to the Fair Work Act (“FW Act”) relating to casual employees came into effect. The amendments included a: • • •
definition of casual employment; pathway for casual employees to become full-time or part-time (also known as permanent workers); and Casual Employment Information Statement that is required to be disturbed to every casual worker.
This finally provides clarity around what constitutes a casual employee. It also removes any ambiguity or any risk of the employee claiming they are a permanent employee and claiming the associated entitlements. The new definition of casual employment Under the FW Act, a person is a casual employee if: • •
•
they are offered a job; and the offer has no firm advance commitment that the work will continue indefinitely with an agreed pattern of work; and they accept the offer knowing that there is no firm advance commitment.
For example, an employee is classified as a casual if - their roster changes each week to suit their employer’s needs and they can refuse or swap shifts. What does “No Firm Commitment” mean? There are 4 factors that determine whether an employer’s offer does not include a firm advance commitment. They are: 1. the employer can choose how many hours and what hours of work to offer the employee and it’s the employee’s choice to accept the work; 2. the employee will be offered hours of work when the business needs them to work; 3. the employment is described as casual; and 4. the employee is paid a casual loading (a higher pay rate for being a casual employee), or a
specific pay rate for being a casual.
•
What happens to casual employees that were employed before 27 March 2021?
•
Casuals who were employed before 27 March 2021 will continue to be casual employees under the FW Act if the initial employment offer meets the new definition above. What are casual entitlements?
employees’
Under the National Employment Standards (the NES), casual employees are entitled to: • • • • • •
access a pathway to become a permanent employee (see below for more information) 2 days unpaid carer’s leave and 2 days unpaid compassionate leave per occasion 5 days unpaid family and domestic violence leave (in a 12-month period) unpaid community service leave Accrued paid long service leave if the employee worked more than 7 years A “casual loading”, which is a higher pay rate for being a casual employee
Casual employees can request flexible working arrangements and take unpaid parental leave if they have been employed by their employer on a regular and systematic basis for at least 12 months. Casuals are not paid for days off, notice of termination or redundancy pay, even if they work regularly for a long time. There is a Pilot Scheme currently being trialled by the Victorian Government that may come into effect in 2022 to allow casuals access to paid sick leave. Pathways for casual employees to become full-time or part-time (permanent workers) The new and updated changes to the NES now include an entitlement to allow casuals to become full-time or part-time workers through a “casual conversion”. What is a “Casual conversion” An employer has an obligation to offer a permanent employment contract to a casual if-
•
They have been employed for 12 months; and They worked a regular pattern of hours for the last 6 months on an ongoing basis; and Their regular hours could continue as a permanent employee without significant changes.
A casual employee can convert to fulltime or part-time employment at any time if the employer and employee both agree to the conversion. The obligation to offer conversion also does not apply to small business employers who have less than 15 employees at the relevant time. Most awards and enterprise agreements have a process for casual conversion. The Fair Work Commission is currently reviewing award clauses regarding casual conversion to make sure they are consistent with the updated NES. Casual Employment Statement
Information
Going forward, employers now need to give every new casual employee a Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS) before or as soon as possible after they start their new job. Please see enclosed the CEIS that is required by law to be disturbed to all casual workers. Small business employers need to give their existing casual employees a copy of the CEIS as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We can help If you have any casual employees, now is the time to think about reviewing their casual employment contracts and establish a compliant, up to date system for casual conversion. How To Paint Your Home Without The Headache PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof
It’s coming into spring, a season when repainting your home could be all that is needed to give it that sparkle, making it look new again. Dreaming of how beautiful your home is going to look? You may be fit enough to climb up ladders and stretch into those awkward corners, but have you considered just how close the paint will be to your face, and therefore the fumes of the paint that you’ll be breathing in? It’s not always the most pleasant experience! The smell hangs around for weeks afterwards and the toxins can continue to be released into the atmosphere for up to five years. Traditional paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon-containing solvents that helps the paint to dry easily and last longer. But they also can have adverse health effects, including headaches, nausea, dizziness, skin disorders and itchy eyes. Looks good, smells great Don’t despair! There are now many paints on the market that are VOC-free and ecofriendly. Low VOC or VOC-free paints have been developed that dry quickly and also emit few odours. They have been proven to work on high traffic building areas such as health care centres, schools and government offices.
Many mainstream brands now have at least one low-toxic or VOC-free paint range in their catalogue. Some lesserknown brands produce all-natural, toxicfree paints made from plant-based oils and waxes, mineral oils, clays, chalks, egg whites, vinegar, essential oils and other extracts from natural sources. They have minimal or no odour, and generally safe around those with allergies or respiratory conditions. As they don’t produce a plastic film like conventional paints, these paints allow walls to breathe, which helps prohibit the growth of mould in moist areas such as bathrooms. They’re not as hardy as synthetic paints, however, and will take longer to dry when applied to walls. Read the labelling carefully on all ecofriendly paint cans – the base paint might be low in toxins, but the colourants used to tint the paint could contain high levels of chemicals. As a rule of thumb, the darker the colour, the more VOCs. Eco-friendly painting tips VOC-free paints are water-based, as opposed to the traditional oil-based ones, so your paint brushes can be rinsed out in a bucket of water and tipped onto the lawn. Even though the paint is ecofriendly, never wash your brushes into a drain. Natural and plant-based paints are produced with little or no carbon emissions, and as the ingredients are biodegradable, you can compost the leftovers.
Natural paints and plant-based paints can be stored for up to ten years if they are properly sealed so it’s a good idea to hold onto leftover paint for touch-ups. As with oil-based paints, if you need to dispose of paint or cans, contact your local council to find out about local collections or recycling stations. The benefits of eco-friendly paint The first benefit is, of course, when you’re actually painting. Quality and pricing are now more in line with conventional paint and you’ll find eco paints for just about every interior application, from hardwearing, wipeable paints for the kitchen and bathroom, to paints suitable for timber, floors, walls and roofs. Low-VOC paints perform well: they dry quickly and are good at covering flaws on previous coats. You will notice immediately that there are no paint fumes, during or after, so you can occupy the rooms sooner. And after the paint job is finished, you will have a home that is healthier for all, especially for pets and people who suffer from allergies and have sensitive reactions to chemicals. Most people would probably rate cleaning up afterwards as the most tedious part of painting a home. Ecofriendly paints are water-based and can be cleaned up with just simple soap and warm water! These paints are not counted as hazardous waste so disposal of cans is much easier. Ecofriendly paints are just what they say they are – friendly to the environment – as they reduce landfill, groundwater and ozone-depleting contaminants. So, if you are planning to repaint your home this spring, why not choose an eco-friendly paint? You won’t regret it!

Car Insurance Read your PDS
GENERAL INSURANCE By Nicole Nelson
Car insurance is just one of the ways you can protect yourself from the unexpected. But before you sign on the dotted line, here’s what you should know about insuring your car. The Terminology These are the most common terms associated with car insurance. Here are some of the most important ones: • Accident: An event that unexpected or unforeseeable.
is
• Agreed value: The amount your car is covered for over the length of a policy – this is an amount that’s agreed on between both you and the insurer. However, some providers don’t offer this as an option. • Claim: Any application you make to your insurer after an accident, so long as it’s covered under your policy. • Comprehensive cover: Coverage for the cost of damage – either to you or caused by you – after an accident. You’ll probably still have to pay an excess, but at least your repairs will be covered whether you were at fault or someone else was. • CTP: Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance is the minimum cover that every driver in Australia needs. It’s illegal to not have it. It covers you in the event someone is injured during an accident you’re responsible for. • Excess: When you make a claim and you’re at fault, you usually have to pay an agreed excess before your claim can be processed. • Premium: Your ongoing payment (either fortnightly, monthly or annually) to maintain your car insurance policy. • Risk: The likelihood of you making a claim that the insurer will have to pay out on. This may be different betwen a number of providers. • Write-off: When the cost of your car’s repairs are considered too expensive to be worth fixing. If you have comprehensive cover you could be paid out a specified amount or given a similar vehicle.
We understand it might seem like a chore, but reading your product disclosure statement (PDS) is actually a good thing. It will help you understand exactly what you’re getting into, as well as what’s covered and what isn’t. Under Australian law, your insurer must include all the terms and conditions of the policy in the PDS or a policy document included with the PDS. It also has to be written in plain English – so you shouldn’t need expert help to understand the nittygritty details. Remember, though, that the PDS isn’t customised to your specific needs or your financial situation. Because of this, it’s recommended you read several PDS’s from various car insurers. That way you can make the most informed decision for your circumstances. If you’re confused by anything in a PDS, simply call the broker and ask for more information. They will be happy to explain everything in more detail, so you can be confident you’re choosing the right policy for you. Comprehensive or third party cover You’ll find most car insurers offer three different levels of cover. But obviously the higher the coverage you want, the more you’ll pay in premiums. Here’s how they stack up: • Comprehensive: The gold-standard of car insurance! It will cover the cost of damage to your vehicle and any others involved in an accident, as well as fire and theft cover. • Third party property, fire and theft: Covers any damage to other people’s vehicles if you’re responsible for the accident, but it doesn’t cover damage to your own car. However, you will be covered in the event your car is stolen, damaged by fire or is maliciously damaged. • Third party property damage: This is a step above the mandatory CTP insurance, covering the cost of repairs to property damage you cause. It’s usually the most affordable option, but remember your own car damage won’t be covered if you’re at fault.
15
Comparing quotes There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to getting car insurance. In fact, as a broker we shop around to find the product that suits your current lifestyle and driving needs. Not all car insurance products are created equal, and although most providers will offer comprehensive, third party property damage, and third party property, fire and theft policies, they may not have the same inclusions across the board. That’s why it’s important get a variety of quotes from different providers – and of course to read the PDS! A broker can break down complex policies into easy-to-digest info, covering everything from premiums to whether they will let you choose an agreed value or market value. Be aware that comparison sites generally do not compare all insurers in the market. Life without a car could be a huge inconvenience – imagine trying to manage school drop off, grocery shopping and getting home late from work without a set of wheels! Having the right car insurance can help you get back on the road faster after an accident, and will give you financial peace of mind knowing that all or a portion of the repairs cost is covered. Be confident that you’re properly covered in the event of an accident or stolen car. If you’re ready to find your ideal policy give us a call today.

Who Are You Even Fighting For?
VIDEO CONSULTANT By Zoë Wood
YES! Who are the people that you serve through your charity, business, or community group? I’m not asking their demographics; like age, location, hobbies, et cetera. I’m asking you who is the person you are serving with your knowledge and resources? Who is ultimately benefiting from what you spend your time doing and who are you helping with the marketing that you create? That may be an overwhelming question to ask (#sorrynotsorry). However, it is the most crucial piece of knowledge to have when doing any outreach or marketing for your charity, business, or community group. This knowledge is the basis of all the videos I create for myself, my students, and my clients. Knowing intrinsically who you serve allows you to know why they follow you so you can do more of what your audience wants. So you know what they ultimately need to hear and understand from you and about what you can provide them. When, how, and where they actually want to hear from you, be that social media, email newsletters, letterbox drops, et cetera.
Also, knowing what they absolutely love, or are totally disgusted by, will influence the direction of any action you take for your cause. We all like to think we are pretty unique individuals and, in most cases, we are. However, when it comes to being able to clearly communicate a huge problem your audience is experiencing concisely back to them, while providing your solution, this golden nugget that is data is how major businesses and causes begin, grow, and prosper. What can I say? We like what we like. If you are not communicating with your audience, your fans, or your followers, you are missing out on being able to serve more people like them. You are leaving people behind that need what you provide. How do you fix this, Zoë? You talk to them! You reach out via email, phone, social media. You run quick surveys, information nights, or town halls (pandemic permitting). You talk to them face to face (when safe to), over the internet, or via letter. You are never cut off from the people you help, you serve, and you ultimately care for. If you don’t have an audience yet, this still applies. Start conversations with family, friends, and people in your community
about what you are starting and the type of people you help. Then, from there, follow the bread crumbs! Humans like connection, if you tell people why you are doing what you are doing, they will know someone you can help, and go from there. Have conversations, build a following, a group, or a place for people to connect whether that be online or in person (pandemic permitting). You won’t know until you reach out. See our upcoming video on what questions to ask your audience behind by searching Video Confidence Coach on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter.

Wood Heater Use Under Health Spotlight By Greta Stonehouse
(Australian Associated Press)
Smoke emitted from wood-fired heaters in NSW homes is causing premature deaths from pollution, a study has found. An average of 14 premature deaths per year was found to occur in the regional town Armidale, where the 12 months of research took place across a population of roughly 24,504. Dr Dorothy Robinson from the University of New England, author of the report published in the Medical Journal of Australia on Monday, likened the pollution to second-hand smoke from cigarettes. “These particles in the wood-smoke are so small they behave like gases and enter our homes even when all doors and windows are shut,” Ms Robinson told AAP. “If the air pollution is high outside it will also be high inside, maybe half an hour or an hour later.” The study collected data from air pollution monitors and from a station installed in the region by the state government in 2018. About 40 per cent of households in Armidale use wood-fired heating, while the area is known for trapping a concentration of smoke as it sits in a basin. Wood heater smoke can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable people including pregnant women, babies, and older generations, and those living with asthma, diabetes and heart disease, the Centre for Air pollution, energy and health Research (CAR) has found. Ms Robinson suggested large rural blocks with at least two hectares between them, such as the restrictions New Zealand has enforced, could mitigate some health effects. But she pointed to another New Zealand study that found a correlation between health risks and just one additional wood heater. “It showed it increased by seven per cent the risk that a child under three would need hospital emergency treatment for anything other than accidents.”
The academic said wood heating manufacturers downplayed the health effects of these devices like coal lobby groups did for emissions. Bruce Mogg from peak industry group Australian Home Heating Association did not deny wood heaters can cause pollution but said millions had been spent in making them cleaner. “Every heating appliance has issues, there’s no such thing as a pollutionfree appliance. And Australia has the toughest standards in the world when it comes to its wood heaters,” he told AAP. Mr Mogg said in some cases gas heaters could be worse for people’s health, with chemicals being injected directly into homes, and disputed second-hand smoke from cigarettes was the same. He questioned the efficacy of the often recommended reverse-cycle air conditioning, as it is “burned from coal”. CAR investigator Fay Johnston called for government incentives and buyback schemes to encourage Australians to
switch out wood heaters for heat pumps. “Wood heater smoke is one of the biggest contributors to air pollution in many parts of Australia, as highlighted by recent studies in NSW and Tasmanian,” she said in a statement. “Australians are nostalgic about the cosy family hearth they provide, but collectively, these heaters are actually damaging people’s lungs and hearts with toxic smoke.” Environment Minister Matt Kean said NSW had one of the strongest air quality regulatory frameworks in the world, but wouldn’t seek to ban wood heaters. “However, medical studies like this, serve as a reminder of how important clean air is for the health of our communities,” he told AAP in a statement. “While the NSW government recognises the potential adverse health impacts of wood heaters, particularly when they are used incorrectly, wood heaters remain a viable and cost-efficient form of heating for many people.” SEPTEMBER 2021 | FIND GEELONG

5 Reasons To
OUTSOURCE Your Salary Packaging
SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls
My recent articles have explored why a business owner would offer salary packaging to their employees and then how they can engage with us, The Salary Packaging People, to achieve this. Now I’d like to point out WHY this is the best course of action. You have to spend money to make money, right? If you’re an employer, you’re probably pretty sick of this adage. Running a business is nothing short of expensive and the costs are pretty relentless, especially when it comes to outsourcing suppliers. That’s why we’re here to tell you, that when you outsource salary packaging to a reputable provider, the benefits pay for themselves - and you won’t be receiving an invoice afterwards. Here are 5 reasons why outsourcing your salary packaging to us is the smartest non-investment you’ll ever make for your business. 1. Don’t Pay Anything Just in case you didn’t get that, we’ll say it again. You don’t pay anything. Salary packaging allows your employees to access their pre-tax income and therefore, pay less tax on their takehome pay. This is not a service which you have to pay for. For every employee we arrange salary packaging, we deduct a minor administration fee that comes from them - not you. Better yet, there’s no extra stress put on your payroll department. Plus, when you use our services, you’re assured of complete taxation compliance that minimises any financial risk to you or your employees.
2. Enjoy Free Advice The benefits of salary packaging are extensive and have multiple applications. It can be a complex topic to navigate, especially for uninitiated or ill-informed individuals. We live and breathe salary packaging, so we are only too happy to make sure our expertise is always accessible. It’s our job to ensure your employees can enjoy the feeling that comes with making more from their own money. We can help you determine the eligibility of each employee, run information sessions and speak to your staff members one-on-one to meet their needs. You and your staff are welcome to call us or contact us at any time to discuss the best way to make the most of salary packaging benefits. 3. Save Time and Money If you manage your salary packaging benefits in-house, that’s more time spent by your payroll and/or finance departments and potentially the need to hire extra payroll staff - especially if you are a large organisation. Outsourcing negates the need for you to spend your own resources or dedicate a department to salary packaging. Best of all, because we know everything there is to know, we might even find ways to save you money. For example, did you know that you allowing your employees access to a novated lease car may reduce your payroll tax? We can show you how. We also stay completely up to date with the latest ATO benefits and exemptions to calculate the best outcomes for you and your employees. 4. Your Employees Will Thank You They may not say it to you directly, but we all know employees show their appreciation in other ways. We believe
that salary packaging encourages the three R’s - Recruit, Reward and Retain. By outsourcing to us, your staff are assured of helpful advice that can save them money as well as you being regarded as an employer of choice. An employer that rewards their employees is proven to have higher retention rates. 5. We’ll Even Do The Reporting Depending on your financial status as an employer, you may need regular reporting to ensure compliance with all areas of FBT legislation. For over 30 years, we’ve helped employers ensure full Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) compliance around salary packaging. We understand that charities and NFP organisations have legislative advantages for items that can be paid as a non-cash benefit and we ensure that the applicable limit per employee is never exceeded. Whatever your FBT status, rest assured that we will help you deliver a great program to your employees without exposure to any FBT risk.
KEY TAKEAWAY There are multiple benefits for a business in outsourcing it’s salary packaging. We tailor our salary packaging services to each business and employee, so have a chat with us about which solution would be of most benefit to your business.

Is Uncertainty Ruling Your Life? When Uncertainty dominates Certainty in our lives, we can feel out of balance and overwhelmed! Find out how to get some certainty back! -
-
-
- -
LIFE COACH & COUNSELLOR By Lou Lugsdin
Uncertainty can bring with it stress, being overwhelmed and the feeling of being out of balance. It can feel like we are living our life on a rollercoaster that never stops. When uncertainty dominates certainty, we often want to try and control people, and situations, to bring some order, familiarity, and stability back. Two of our core human needs are the need for Certainty and the need for Uncertainty. Let’s investigate our 6 Core Needs, of which Certainty and Uncertainty belong too. Our “6 Core Needs” is a personal development tool, originally created and taught by one of the world’s masters of personal development – Tony Robbins. The philosophy behind it is that we all, each one of us, has 6 Core Needs that we must meet in our lives. We will meet these needs either resourcefully (in a positive way) or un-resourcefully (in a negative way). So, what are our 6 Core Needs? 1. Certainty – the need for comfort, security, safety, to be sure, organised, planned 2. Uncertainty – the need for variety, adventure, flexibility, spontaneity, chaos, change
3. Significance / Respect – the need to feel special, valued, appreciated, important, it’s all about self-esteem, self-worth 4. Love and Connection – this is all about our relationships with others and with our self, communication, interpersonal relationships 5. Contribution – giving back, contributing to others and society 6. Growth – growing as a person, as a team, as a workplace, making society a better place How do these 6 Core Needs Impact our Lives? A lot of people come to me saying that they feel stuck, unbalanced, have hit a fork in the road and they don’t know what to do next. People use the word balance or unbalanced frequently and refer to how they feel in life as either balanced or unbalanced. Feeling out of balance interrupts our natural flow and can leave us overwhelmed and exhausted. To counteract the overwhelming feeling of uncertainty, we need to increase the amount of certainty we can experience.
-
Add in an activity such as a 20 to 40-minute walk 1-3 times per week. Give these walks a day and a time on your schedule. Plan your meals for the week. This gives you a sense of control over your meals and provides a food prep and shopping plan. Incorporate some self-care into your week. For example, add in an online Breathe Work or Yoga or Meditation class. This class will have a set day and time. This adds certainty. Add in a ritual of daily Box Breathing exercises. Go to YouTube and find demonstrations of box breathing. Think about what you can control and what you can’t control. Ask yourself, what is in my sphere of control and what is not? Get some support. Work with a professional who is experienced at helping you to feel more balanced and less overwhelmed and stressed.
Why are the 6 Core Needs so Important?
• • • • •
We all have them, and we are all trying to meet them every day. We can reduce being overwhelmed if our needs are balanced and we have strategies in place to manage it. We can stretch our comfort zones more effectively and confidently if we are not afraid to take on some uncertainty. If we value others, show respect, and make others feel special, then our connections with people will more likely be quality interactions. When our connections are resourceful, we should feel good about ourselves and have increased self-esteem.
The more we know about ourselves, the better our decision-making becomes. Understanding our 6 Core Needs is pertinent to creating and experiencing balance, happiness, and success!

Networking Working For You be all things to all people. As the business strategist above a client may need the additional services of a web developer, an app developer, a marketing Guru, a PR specialist, support with additional staff through human resources, and so much more. Having a stable of experts who think like you, understand your mentoring methods and can work with you to support your clients is just as important as the clients themselves. Prepare the right questions that will give you the answers you need to qualify them as either clients you can support, or appropriate to add to your stable. Asking 5 questions showing interest in them and what they do using the basic 5 W’s, Who, What, When, Where and most importantly their WHY they are in business. Spend no more than 10 minutes with each of them before moving on. Make a time to see them in their office, your office or over a coffee as applicable to follow up. If they can’t do it on the spot or it is not appropriate with too many people around, follow them up the next day with a call to make that appointment. Make Networking Work For You

Networking is crucial to our businesses today more than ever. Networking can be very effective if you plan your for the event before you attend. Whether in person or, on Zoom or Meet or any of the other mediums available to us today, plan which events are best for your business and what you want to achieve from the event. There are five steps to effective networking 1. 2. 3. 4.
Be personally prepared Choose the right event Choose your target market Be prepared for the people you want to meet 5. Follow up Be prepared for the event. Have business cards or any promotional material you choose to use so your contacts remember who you are. Have a pen at the ready to write down any distinguishing points as a reminder on their card. Have a well-prepared elevator pitch to introduce yourself that will entice further conversation.
Check out the event before you go. What type of clientele does it attract? Everyone is a potential client/ customer. The way you approach each will change depending on the outcome you are looking for. For example: If you are a business strategist the information a tradie who is looking at starting their own business is very different to that of a long standing corporate entity. Your support is equally valuable to both. The event may attract clients from all fields which are ones you are concentrating on at the moment? The two key target markets are • •

Could you Leverage the Power of Your Super with an SMSF Property Loan? •
FINANCE BROKER By Allan Houliston
A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) loan or limited recourse borrowing arrangement, as they are also known, are a great option if you are not able to buy an investment property outright. However, they are one of the most complex forms of finance in the current market and there are some very strict rules that you must adhere to that have been set out by the ATO. Self-managed super fund property rules
•
the sole purpose test - this means your fund needs to be maintained for the sole purpose of providing retirement benefits to your members, or to their dependents if a member dies before retirement.
•
not be acquired from a related party of a member.
•
not be lived in by a fund member or any fund members’ related parties
not be rented by a fund member or any fund members’ related parties. The main exception to this rule is when the fund purchases a commercial property and then leases the property back to the fund member. This is acceptable but the acquired property must be leased at the market rent.
For anyone that already has an SMSF set up or are thinking of moving from either a more traditional retail or industry fund, the first step is to obtain both financial and accounting/taxation advice. Several accountants have an Australian Financial Services Licence, which is required to give advice on self-managed superannuation funds. However, if you would prefer to deal with your regular accountant and they don’t hold an AFS licence, then you will also need to seek the advice of a financial adviser who does. They can then give both the advice in relation to the benefits of moving to an SMSF, ongoing advice concerning the property & lending and diversification of other investments within your fund.
21
If property investment is in line with your overall retirement planning strategy, then you will also need to factor in the differences with purchasing an investment property through an SMSF when compared to a standard investment purchase outside of your super. SMSF borrowing Higher Costs - SMSF loans tend to attract both higher interest rates and set up fees than standard investment loans. • Single Acquirable Asset – you can purchase land for investment purposes, but you can’t construct on it under a separate contract. You can however purchase a property under a single combined contract, such as properties that are purchased ‘off the plan’. • Hard to Cancel - If your SMSF property loan documents and contract aren’t set up correctly, you can’t unwind the arrangement. You may have to sell the property, potentially causing substantial losses to the SMSF • Cash Flow - loan repayments must come from your SMSF. Your fund must always have sufficient liquidity or cash flow to meet the loan repayments. This will be offset by the fact that your rental income will also be paid into your SMSF account. So, there are a lot of facts to consider when looking at this strategy, but the main thing is to do your due diligence and to get the right advisers on board including a finance broker who specialises in this form of lending, which is not common due to the complexities of the arm’s length arrangement.

Four Attractive Doors And Gates Options For Commercial Premises GARAGE DOORS By Chantal Djuric
Your commercial premises need to be super safe, especially during this period of fluctuating lockdown cycles. Here are four attractive door and gate options that you might not have thought of for securing your business workspace and assets. Sliding gates Sliding gates make an open, welcoming appearance to a property such as a car sales yard or gardening retail space.
Here are four benefits that may persuade you to install boom gates at your commercial premises: •
•
• There are several varieties of sliding gates on offer – face-welded radiatorstyle gates, aluminium slates, aluminium garden styles, Colorbond fencing and even laser-cut screens. They all come in a large range of up-to-date colours and sizes. They are typically made using 40 x 40 mm or 50 x 50 mm frames, with a design pattern to be specified. Guideposts are positioned at the back of the gate on either side; one supports the gate when sliding, the other supports the gate when it is closed. Sliding gates operate on an aluminium track with 90 mm wheels insert in the bottom rail. As the gate sits a total of 40 mm above ground, this needs to be factored in when determining the overall height of the gate. Sliding gates should always be installed by a garage door specialist. Boom gates Effective and affordable, boom gates are a popular option in carparks, shopping centres, hospitals and apartment complexes. Also perfect for gated industrial estates, these barriers can offer both privacy and security for business owners.
•
improved security – as they can only be opened with a card or other security device, unwanted vehicles are prevented from entering. Boom gates can also monitor and record vehicle registration details of all who enter and leave. control of traffic flow – where there are limited parking spaces and a lot of vehicles, boom gates allow full control over the amount of vehicles that can be on a property at any one time. cost savings on security – with minimal operating and maintenance costs, boom gates also remove the need for a security guard. saving space – boom gates require significantly less space than swinging and sliding gates and require only a small amount of vertical space to swing upwards.
Though boom gates are easy to install and maintain, we recommend that you call a garage door specialist to do the job. High cycle panel lift door High cycle panel lift doors are built for durability, speed and efficiency. They perform more quickly and reliably than traditional sectional doors, and are therefore especially suitable for transportation, distribution and manufacturing businesses, as they have faster opening and closing speeds.
An added bonus is that they are easy to clean and maintain. They also have an increased lifespan by eliminating the need for counterbalance springs. As if all that wasn’t enough, their rapid open-close cycles promote energy efficiency through reduction of heating and cooling. High cycle doors are made with strong components and heavy-duty springs. Most models have a barrel and spring construction; that means there’s a barrel holding the rolling mechanism while the springs ease the tension from the door’s weight. This kind of roll-up door is made from sturdier materials compared to others, so the size of springs used on them is very important. Regular repair and maintenance is essential for high cycle doors. We recommend servicing every three months to keep these doors in prime condition. Mesh panel doors Mesh panel doors have been designed for security and functionality. A strong and rigid aluminium frame surrounds the diamond mesh inserts for a door that is aesthetically pleasing in appearance yet will provide the user with many years of reliable service.
Suitable for use in residential and light commercial premises, an aluminium mesh roller panel door provides both security and ventilation of approximately 60%. They are ideally suited to carparking spaces in and under home units and commercial office buildings where security, reliability and ventilation issues are paramount, adding natural light and airflow to your garage. These doors can be operating at least a hundred times per day, so we highly recommend a routine service is done every three months to keep this door running its best at all times. Life Insurance FINANCIAL PLANNER By Mark Kruger
Having seen first-hand the effects of families being insured or not, I know for a fact that talking about insurance to my clients is one of the most valuable things I can offer them. When I entered the financial planning profession, I was confused as to why I had to learn so much about insurance. I had worked in valuations servicing some of the top ASX-listed companies, I had investment qualifications etc. Surely, I should be talking about assets, returns and complicated strategies! When I saw people in dire straits due a lack of cover after traumatic events, the truth hit home (and prompted me to get my own cover!). The conundrum You’ve insured your car, yes? Insured your home and contents? Your pet? Even your phone? What about your life? It’s staggering how many people haven’t insured their family’s greatest asset – themselves! The odds What are the odds of your house burning down or being severely damaged? Probably pretty slim on a day-to-day basis. But what happens if it does burn down? Seriously, think about it. Where would that leave you and your family? The financial consequences alone are catastrophic, let alone emotional and logistical upheaval. So you insure for it, right? It costs relatively little in the scheme of things. But surely your family is worth more than that?
Do you need it?
What would happen to your family if you died? Could your partner cover the mortgage repayments without your salary? Car loan? Can they cover basic living expenses? Will they have to retrain? How long will that take? If they are at work, what about childcare? What about the increase in expenses when kids start school? For how many years? And what about the emotional toll – they may need a good amount of time to adjust to a new life. Are there assets to sell to assist with this? There may be super, but should that be left for your retirement? This is a non-exhaustive list of questions but will get you thinking in the right way.

Money isn’t the most important thing in life, but it’s reasonably close to oxygen on the ‘gotta have it’ scale. Zig Ziglar
How much does it cost? The answers to the questions above may quickly get you to some pretty big figures – a few hundred thousand dollars to $1-2 million of cover is not uncommon. But don’t be alarmed by this. As per the home and contents example, the cost is relatively cheap for what you are insuring for. It’s impossible to give a price as premiums will vary according to your age, health, occupation and premium structure as well as the level of actual cover you need.
Your move It’s a personal choice to have the peace of mind of being adequately insured for your family or not. However, the quote above makes it clear. Money just makes things easier, especially in tough times. There are so many variables when it comes to Life insurance. It would be my pleasure to guide you through it and get you the setup that’s right for you.
I have life insurance in super. You may have life insurance in super. But is it enough? This is often called ‘group’ super and is a notional amount of super that increases with age to middle age and then declines. It is often not enough to meet people’s needs and how can it be? The super fund doesn’t know your situation. Further, group cover is not usually fully underwritten, so you may not know that you aren’t necessarily covered for pre-existing conditions.

ACRONMYNS - PART 1
BOOKKEEPER By Mary-Clare Switz
In our daily business lives we are bombarded with Acronyms. Some are commonly understood but others are a bit of a mystery. This month I have compiled a list of common acronyms that businesses see. The list got so big that I have broken it up in to 2 parts. Part 2 will be in the October issue. ABN & ACN – Australian Business Number & Australian Company Number The ACN is a 9 digit number issued to companies who are registered with ASIC and identifies the company. Sole Traders do not register with ASIC as a business so will not have an CAN. The ABN is an 11 digit number mainly used for tax purposes and is required if conducting a business (regardless if registered for GST or not). Companies’ ABN will be made up of their ACN with an additional 2 digits at the beginning. ANZSIC – Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification
Every business has an ANZSIC code which defines the main purpose of the business. ANZSIC codes have been a huge topic of discussion since COVID started as state grants have used the ANZSIC code to deem eligibility for the grants. Many businesses have found they have had to update their ANZSIC code to reflect the current purpose of their business to be eligible for grants. In these cases it is where the business started in one format and over the years has evolved into providing a different service or product. ASIC – Australian Securities Investments Commission
&
ASIC is Australia’s integrated corporate, markets, financial services and consumer credit regular and an independent Australian Government body. Companies registered with ASIC must pay an Annual Review fee each year. In your bookkeeping this is generally coded to “Filing Fees” or “ASIC Fees.” It is always excluded from the BAS (so neither GST or GST free). The current fee is $273. If a company is late in paying this fee the penalties are generous so it is highly
recommended to ensure this is paid prior to the due date. ABR – Australian Business Register ABR stores business and organisation details. ABN’s are applied for and issued by the ABR. The ABR is responsible for the ANB Lookup website. GST – Goods & Services Tax Australia’s GST system of consumer taxation came into effect on 1 July 2000. It was designed to replace the federal wholesale sales tax system and phase out a number of State Government taxes. Unfortunately, not all of the state taxes were abolished such as Stamp Duty. BAS – Business Activity Statement Any business who is registered for GST will be familiar with the term BAS. BASes are commonly lodged quarterly but may also be lodged monthly or annually, depending on the business. On the BAS businesses report the GST they collected on Sales (1A on the form), the GST they paid on purchases (1B), Gross Wages (W1), PAYG withheld from employees’ wages (W2).
findgeelong.com.au
SEPTEMBER 2021 | FIND GEELONG
In addition, businesses may also report PAYG Instalments, FBT, FTC & WET ... see below for definitions of these. IAS – Instalment Activity Statement This has two main purposes. One is where a business reports wages and PAYG withholding on a monthly basis, but reports GST quarterly. On the quarterly BAS they will report only the last month of the quarter’s wages and PAYG. The other two months will report just wages & PAYG in between the quarterly BASes. Generally if your PAYG withholding is $25,000 or more your business will be expected to lodge monthly IASes (8 each year) along with the 4 quarterly BASes. PAYG / PAYGW – Pay As You Go / Pay As You Go Withholding PAYG (also referred to as PAYGW) is the tax withheld from employees’ wages. PAYGI – Pay As You Go Instalments This one catches a lot of businesses (including Sole Traders) out. When a tax return for a Business is lodged (Company or Sole Trader) and there is a tax liability for that year, the ATO deems that amount of tax liability is an estimate for the for the following year. The ATO then issues a notice to the business how much their PAYGI obligation will be and prefill the quarterly
BASes with the estimate so that by then end of the current year’s income tax return is assessed the estimated tax with have been pre-paid. If the estimate is too much a refund will be issued. If the estimate was not enough a further payment will be required. Once the next business income tax return is lodged the estimate is recalculated. If the business had a loss and did not have a tax liability, the PAYGI will vary down to zero for the next year. Once in the system, this is a good way to spread the load of paying the year’s income tax. However, new businesses need to be aware that in the first year of business no PAYGI can be deemed by the ATO as there is no history, so when the first income tax return is lodged, not only do they need to pay their income tax, but they also start pre-paying for the next year. A PAYGI can be varied if there are substantial changes to a business’s income (such as during COVID). We strongly recommend businesses to talk to their Tax Agent if they are considering a variation. FBT – Fringe Benefits Tax This is a tax paid on Fringe Benefits paid to an employee, director of a company or a beneficiary of a trust who works in the business.
25
FTC – Fuel Tax Credit Fuel tax credits provided businesses with a credit for the fuel tax. To claim fuel tax credits a business must be eligible including road transport. WET – Wine Equalisation Tax Businesses who make wine, import wine into Australia or see it wholesale will generally have to account for wine equalisation tax. It is designed to be paid on the last sale from wholesaler to retailer. This tax is for a very narrow segment of businesses, but I have mentioned it here as some businesses such as hospitality will receive invoices from suppliers show WET. Cafes and restaurants do not need to remit and cannot claim WET.

Why Clothing Is Important In Business EMBROIDERY SPECIALIST By Kerry Kaspi
Clothing has been found to have a greater effect on first impressions than Personality!!! What? I never knew that?? But in early social interactions, clothing has a significant psychological influence on peoples’ perceptions of the wearer. In a study both high school students and teachers were asked to rate pictures of female athletes, some were in uniform and others casual street clothes. All the athletes were perceived as being more professional, having a higher ability and having more team spirit when viewed in a uniform. DOES IT CREATE A PROFFESSIONAL MINDSET? Well, this is not just jargon thrown at us by coaches; you really can dress for success. Research into work attire and its effects on psychological state has discovered that formal workwear actually has a positive effect on alertness and focus. When we put on an item of clothing it is common for the wearer to take the symbolic meaning of that outfit, for example putting on your party dress, this makes you feel in the mood for a party and can elevate your mood ready for the excitement ahead. Same as weekend attire, this has a casual and relaxed vibe when being worn. Especially the trackies! A uniform also says a lot of things about the company and is a walking advertisement for your business . An employee walking around in public brings exposure to the uniform. Firstly how and what is being worn is noticed, then your logo, lastly the wording. Within, all the information taken in a few seconds have passed and a perception is formed. So insist on shirts that are made to tuck in, being tucked in. Your uniform also comes with brushed hair and clean shoes. And generally your best behaviour when wearing it.
So how do you get that mix right? Decide on exactly why this uniform is needed? What job should it do? Decide on where it will be worn, in the public eye, or in the boiler room. Make considerations for OHS detail and safety regulations. What image aligns with your branding? UNIFORMS BECOMING MORE CASUAL Uniforms are now becoming more casual, but all the above still holds true. Consider a working uniform if you get dirty and quoting attire when you are quoting, always professional for your industry standard. This idea Makes sense if a perception is based on a few seconds of your appearance. Will this fabric be comfortable, washable, non iron, warm, cold etc By this time you should have an idea of your logo, choose colours that will compliment your uniform colour. My view is to decide carefully, match colourway of logo to fabric choices, a clear logo without too much detail is much easier to recognise and remember. Detailed and adding too much to a logo complicates the message, viewers are very likely not to acknowledge it. So in closing I would like to give you a couple of uniform ideas that I think still possess a casual and professional look.

Craver or Foodie? Six Diet Types Revealed (Australian Associated Press)
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to losing weight and people may shed more kilos in the long term by working with their “diet type”.
As a result, they need strategies to help break the cycle and achieve long-term success in their diet, according to the study.
“Pleasers” are likeable and friendly people who could also be sensitive to social comparisons, which can make them feel like they are not doing well.
That’s the message from a new study which identified six major diet approaches among more than 245,000 Australian respondents.
The study’s lead author, CSIRO research scientist Dr Emily Brindal, said it was important for Australians trying to lose weight to learn more about their diet types.
“Foodies” are passionate about all things food, including the experience of preparing and eating good quality meals.
The two most common types of dieters are “thinkers” and “battlers”, according to the report published by the CSIRO, Australia’s leading science agency, on Monday.
“Too often diets are developed with a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores the fact that some people behave or think differently to others,” Dr Brindal said.
Making up 14.1 per cent of the study’s respondents, “thinkers” are goal-oriented, motivated and analytical.
“Working with your diet type could help you achieve better weight loss outcomes in the longer term.”
But they’re also sensitive to negative feedback that can lead to stress or anxiety, which could ultimately derail their diet.
The four other common diet types identified are “cravers”, “pleasers”, “foodies” and “socialisers”.
“Battlers” make up 12.8 per cent of respondents, who are likely find themselves regularly tempted by food and prone to stress and worry.
“Cravers” have the highest body mass index, according to the study, and are likely to experience strong food cravings that may lead to overeating in “tricky” food-related settings.
The study found that “foodies” love variety and have the best diet quality of all six types. Finally, “socialisers” are those who need flexibility to prevent diet restrictions from stifling social occasions or ‘killing the mood’ of an event. “We are seeing people cope differently with COVID-19 stresses and uncertainty, which has included disruptions to health, fitness and social routines,” Dr Brindal said. “We hope to help people achieve greater success on their journey to rediscover their health by playing to their individual strengths while also helping them to gain better control over their weaknesses.”

2021 TA Reporting Victoria COVID-19 business grants and assistance On 21 July, the Victorian Government announced new cash grants for certain businesses impacted by the July 2021 lockdown restrictions. Many of these payments will be made automatically to businesses and sole traders that received grants under established COVID-19 support programs. Newly eligible businesses are also invited to apply. Other industry-specific support packages were also rolled out across 2020-21. Eligible businesses include those most highly impacted by drops in turnover from extended COVID-19 restrictions, such as the alpine regions or Melbourne CBD, hospitality or event industry operators. Previously, rent relief

tenancies were banned for 6 months. Most of the grants assisted with unavoidable business expenses that are not support by other government funding. The majority of these payments should be included as assessable income in the 2020-21 tax return under Label Q: Assessable Government Industry Payments. Certain payments will be non-assessable, non-exempt (NANE) income for tax purposes for certain businesses and do not need to be included in the eligible business’s tax return.
SA COVID-19 stimulus package Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Australian Government has implemented a range of stimulus packages for residents and businesses. Predominately, the measures to date have revolved around support for businesses with payroll tax and land tax relief. Smaller employing businesses have been given a waiver of payroll tax from March 2020 to May 2021. Depending on when the liability accrued, a larger businesses has been able to either defer their SA payroll tax liability or get a waiver. Also, wages that were reimbursed by JobKeeper payments have been exempt from payroll tax calculations. From November 2020, an exemption of payroll tax will also apply when an SA business hires a new apprentice or trainee for their first 12 months. Land tax deferrals were available to landlords during the 2020 land tax year. Also, landlords

It is understood that the support payment will be made through the ATO running balance account. An eligible entity, including not-for-profit entities, will receive payments of between $1,500 and $100,000 per week based on the level of their payroll. Non-employing sole traders will receive $1,000 per week. To receive the payment, an eligible

In this case, the Full Federal Court concluded that the small business CGT concessions should be looked at beneficially for taxpayers, as is intended from the original legislation. The outcome of this case relies on the interpretation of “used in the course of carrying on a business” which is necessary for determining an active asset. The Full Federal Court has interpreted that this sentence does not use or imply restrictive language such as “ordinary course of a business” or “day to day running of a business”.

Not-For-Profit of the Month
G’day, We’re Chris and Luke, Co-founders of Right Mate, a Geelong based not-for-profit in the men’s mental health space. Chris also sits on the board of The Australian Men’s Health Forum (we’re also a member organisation) and Luke sits on the board of Healthy Minds Geelong, which is another not-for-profit here in Geelong. Right mate was founded in part due to the lived experience, both direct and indirect that we have both had and an initial desire to change the narrative and help those in our local community. We initially focussed on social connection, an area that for men in a regional community can struggle with, so we partnered with The Man Walk and launched The Man Walk Geelong which has been running since July 2019 and we have subsequently assisted with the launch of a Torquay walk and a Drysdale (Set for an October 2021 launch) walk to cover more of our region. The initiative has built a strong following across our communities, has assisted men to connect with each other and has organically provided opportunity for friendships to form and an informal support network to be developed as well. Over the past few months, we’ve further developed the social connection aspect by hosting a monthly dinner at a different, local Geelong venue which has proven to be a great success. Moving forward, we’re now looking at what other events we can develop that are low cost for those that attend but offer more opportunity for social connection, which we continue to see as key to driving positive mental health amongst men.

Right Mate has also developed a core suite of workshops in response to community feedback we received – we have workshops which target schools, sporting clubs, supporters/partners of people with mental health concerns and a broader community workshop as well as one on mental fitness and in addition have partnered with an accredited MHFA instructor to offer MHFA training as well. Whilst we believe that having a conversation is key to breaking down the stigma of mental health, the feedback we have received from community is that unless we understand the core issues at hand and empower our community with the skills to have those conversations, we will continue to find ourselves in a reactive cycle of mental health management, when what we need is a proactive management style focussed on early preventative measures. At Right Mate, we don’t reinvent the wheel. We take the information and resources developed by the likes of MHFA, beyondblue, Headspace etc. and we then deliver it in a manner that encourages audience participation, challenges them to become comfortable with speaking about the uncomfortable but ultimately gives them the skills and confidence to proactively engage with those close to them and their broader community. We do this by teaching them the type of language to use, methods like ALEC/ALGEE etc., how to look for non-verbal cues and importantly how to ensure they are in a safe space both physically and mentally before approaching the conversation with someone and then what to do with that information in a safe manner for all involved. We come into our workshops relaxed and allow the audience to very much guide us as to which areas they want us to focus on instead of running to a set script. Whilst we have structure in place for our workshops, we believe our strength and unique selling point is that we can be flexible during a workshop whilst still ultimately getting out the message we had planned. Our passion for mental health honestly comes from a deep desire to help our community here in Geelong. It’s why we’ve presented to secondary schools and continue to work with them and their students, it’s why we’ve partnered with Marshall Cricket Club as their well-being partner for 3 years and it’s why we continue to engage with key community leaders and organisations. We need to provide viable options to our community that can work in partnership with the critical clinical services who are severely under resourced and overworked, so that those that can be helped without clinical intervention can be, which then allows our clinical services to focus on those that really do need their help and guidance. For anyone wanting to speak to us, please reach out via email at hello@rightmate.org.au and we also encourage you to check out our website www.rightmate.org.au and follow us on both Instagram and Facebook. Cheers, Chris & Luke

NATHAN GREMMO’S DONATION STORY In May 2015 the Gremmo family’s life changed forever when their eldest child, Nathan, was critically injured in an accident at age 13. Nathan’s family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour Nathan’s generous personality. This amazing gift saved the lives of six people – including five young adults and a baby. Hours prior to his accident, Nathan wrote on his Instagram account, “You only live once, but if you do it right once is enough”. Wise beyond his years, he definitely was an extraordinary young man. Nathan is described by his father Michael, mother Kylie and sisters Ashley and Annaliese as “a boy with a unique sense of humour, a love for animals and an insatiable energy for life.”
MY BROTHER by ANNALIESE GREMMO
1,600 people waiting… waiting for their lives to be saved by a hero. I am the extremely proud sister of organ donor Nathan Gremmo. On 30 April 2015 our perfectly normal family life was shattered when my brother passed away in a car accident. Life will never be the same without him. Six lives were saved as a result of Nathan’s generous gift. Whilst we were in hospital, organ donation was the easiest decision that I helped to make. We needed something good to come out of this horrible tragedy. Could you imagine being on dialysis 12 hours a day, being injected daily with insulin, having lungs that didn’t work properly making you feel like you’re drowning or having a heart so damaged that it could stop beating at any second? We are lucky in Australia to have amazing organ transplant teams with doctors, nurses and research units that save lives. In 2014 a total of 1,193 people received the gift of life from 378 donors. World class facilities that have achieved some of the best transplant outcomes in the world; However only 50% of eligible families agreed to donate their loved ones organs. This leaves over 1600 people on a lifesaving waiting list. I’m here today to encourage people to think about and discuss tissue and organ donation. It’s as easy as discovering the facts about organ donation, deciding about becoming a donor, registering your decision online and most importantly discussing your decision with those closest to you so they are aware of your wishes. Through Nathan’s legacy, our family has established Jersey Day. Each Jersey Day we are simply asking everybody to wear a Jersey to school or work, and most importantly have a conversation with their friends and family about Organ and Tissue Donation. Our family has endured the cruelest possible circumstances. I can only think that if our circumstances were reversed and Nathan was desperate for an Organ Donation we would move heaven and Earth to save my brother; However, the reality is that we would be waiting for a generous organ donor family to save Nathan’s life. I think everyone here would feel the same way. I believe we all should live our lives the same way as my brother did with his selfless, caring and respectful nature. Nathan’s last Instagram post only hours before his tragic accident was: “YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, BUT IF YOU DO IT RIGHT ONCE IS ENOUGH”

The City of Greater Geelong is proud to announce the completion of I AM sculpture, temporarily located on the forecourt of the Carousel at Eastern Beach. I AM is a large-scale text-based public sculpture, celebrating members of the Greater Geelong Community who have a lived experience with disability. Commissioned by the City of Greater Geelong, artist Mark Cuthbertson worked with artist-collaborators Robert Croft, Hannah Wilkinson, Christian Den Besten and George Macaronis to develop the public art sculpture, based on over 85 contributions from the local community through a series of artist-led workshops. The resulting text-based works were curated by the artists and cast into the side profile of the I AM letters. Funded by the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund (CSF) and delivered in partnership with VALiD (Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disabilities) and Geelong-based ArtGusto, the sculpture stands over 2 metres and is designed to be relocatable throughout the municipality. I AM will remain in place at the Waterfront until February 2022.
The sculpture is interactive by design, inviting you to be a part of the work. You can position yourself within and take photos (using the hashtag #IAMGeelong)
that will form a collective voice celebrating the diversity of our local community.
Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan - Chair Creative Communities and Culture portfolio “Congratulations to all participants on their part in the sculpture’s development. This is an engaging and important piece of public art that reinforces our belief that everyone in the Greater Geelong community is welcome and brings their own unique value. Mark, Robert, Hannah, Christian and George have done an outstanding job creating the finished artwork from the excellent contributions of so many community members.”
Christine Couzens, Member for Geelong “I am proud of the Andrews Government’s funding of this important public work in Geelong. Congratulations to the many people in Geelong’ all-abilities community who have worked for so long to make this artwork a reality. This public sculpture celebrates the contribution of people of all abilities to our community.”
Mark Cuthbertson - I AM artist “It has been a true pleasure as an artist bringing the I AM project to the Geelong community. I would like to thank my fellow artistic collaborators and the broader community members for their involvement and contributions to the work, what an amazing outcome.”

Community Invited To Help City Improve Weather Data This Smart City project will help us to better understand and respond to extreme weather events and environmental issues, and make more informed decisions about how we manage heat in the city. The weather fascinates many of us, so if you’re a budding Jane Bunn or you’d just like to participate in an interesting citizen science project, we encourage you to get involved.”
Councillor Peter Murrihy - Innovative Solutions portfolio Chair: “Supporting technology and data literacy is one of the ways we can encourage innovative industries and solutions in the region. We are seeking to partner with the community for a project which aims to improve the accuracy of local weather data. The Weather Together project invites community members to host a weather sensor in their backyard or workplace to increase the data-collection capacity across the municipality and enhance the information on the city’s temperature and humidity levels. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) currently has two weather observation stations - one at Avalon and one at the Geelong Racecourse. The new network will enable the City, BOM and weathersensitive industries including agriculture and aviation to study real-time variations in weather at the hyper-local level.
Mayor Stephanie Asher: “The data will further support the City to make evidence-based planning decisions. Our weather can be unpredictable so every piece of information we, as a community, collect from Anakie to Ocean Grove will be helpful.
The new Smart City Strategic Framework endorsed by Council in March is all about using innovative technology to create a more liveable, sustainable and thriving region. The project will use low-cost and lowpowered IoT sensors, ensuring the network can be easily expanded as needed.”
More News & Updates
A group of community members who participated in ‘Internet of Things Kickstarter’ during Geelong Design Week 2021 will be the first to collect weather data, seizing the opportunity to apply their learnings during the 12-month trial. The sensors will use the our Internet of Things (IoT) network, The Things Network Geelong. The data will be available on the open data platform, Geelong Data Exchange, making it easy for anyone to access and analyse. Weather Together is a community-wide effort. If you would like to participate, please visit our Smart City page or the Weather Together data platform.

Have Your Say On Landfill’s Future Landscape Council is seeking community feedback on the future land use of the Drysdale landfill precinct. The primary waste disposal facility in the municipality, the Drysdale landfill has operated since 1983 and receives about 100,000 tonnes of waste and 55,000 visitors each year. Planning is already well underway for the rehabilitation and landscaping of the total site, with the long-term works project scheduled to begin in 2022-23. Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher said a community reference group, which included neighbouring property owners, had helped shape three potential landscape plan options. “Each option has a separate main focus, such as community access and use, environmental restoration and costeffective rehabilitation,” Mayor Asher said. “We’re hoping these options will stimulate discussion and allow residents to imagine what this significant landholding could become after the landfill is closed.” The City is currently conducting a Phytocap trial, to see if trees and shrubs can be planted over the former landfill.
If the Phytocap method is unsuccessful, then a traditional landfill site rehabilitation will be implemented, similar to the former Corio Landfill rehabilitation. Option 1: Would provide new community parkland, retaining a mix of open grass areas and indigenous vegetation, while maximising public access and community facilities. Potential infrastructure could include paths, seats, picnic areas and toilets, to support a variety of recreational and social activities. Option 2: Would provide complete rehabilitation of the site, with a focus on restoring habitat and biodiversity values. The focus would be on maximising indigenous vegetation, while potentially limiting public access in some areas to increase bird habitat. Option 3: The former quarry site would be rehabilitated and filled with soil to match the surrounding topography. Revenue generated from the filling activities would offset the cost of the project. Indigenous plantings would be focused around the waterway, and on the former quarry site.
Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan said it was important that Council progressed its plans for the site, and encouraged members of the community to view the options and provide their feedback. “With the landfill approaching the end of its active life, we need to lock away our future plans to enable this longterm rehabilitation project to begin next financial year,” Deputy Mayor Sullivan said. “We’d welcome input on your preferred land uses and ideas for the future of the site.” The Founds Road site has a range of current and former land uses. These include active landfill cells, previously rehabilitated landfill cells, a resource recovery centre, stormwater and leachate dams, and a disused quarry. Feedback on the draft plan will be received from 1 September at yoursay. geelongaustralia.com.au

Planes, Trains And Ships Named Geelong
Qantas’s Boeing 707 – City of Geelong Qantas’s City of Geelong was a Boeing 707-338C and carried the registration of VH-EAJ. The jetliner rolled of the Boeing production line in Renton just south of Seattle in Washington State USA in August of 1969. The delivery flight stopped in London where it was chartered to Sydney as a migrant charter. The jet touched down on Australian soil for the first time in Sydney on the 3rd of October 1969. The jet was nearly lost as part of the horrific Lara bushfires of January 1969, where fire threatened Avalon Airport. Fortunately quick action by the aircrew and engineers moved the jet out of the fire’s path. The plane was the first Qantas jetliner to operate the Melbourne to Christchurch route, that began in July of 1972. In May 1975 VH-EAJ was renamed from City of Geelong to City of Broken Hill and flew for Qantas until March of 1976. It was then sold to British Caledonian Airlines and renamed County of Fife. In the late 1970’s it served time in Africa with Nigerian Airlines and later Uganda Airlines. The plane suffered severe damage in a heavy landing in Brussels in February of 1982 before returning to service only five days later. In the later 1980’s the plane was re-badged Ethiopian Airlines and later Uganda Airlines. The Jet was destroyed in a crash as it tried to land in fog at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport in October
of 1988 on a flight from London’s Gatwick Airport. 66 of the 94 people on board did not survive the crash that happened some 1300 metres short of the runway. Qantas’s Boeing 747 – City of Geelong Geelong had a brand new 747 Jumbo Jet named in her honour in 1975. VH-EBJ was a 747-238B aircraft and rolled off the Boeing assembly line in April of 1975. Its first passenger flight was from San Francisco to Sydney on May 31st 1975, stopping at Honolulu and Nadi on the route. The jetliner was leased to Air New Zealand for a short period in October of 1986 before returning to QANTAS service flying between Sydney, Perth and Singapore. In February of 1989 the jet was sold to Allco Aerospace and leased back to Qantas before being re-badged as Air Pacific, a brand partly owned by Qantas. In 1991 it was sold and transferred around several investment companies in the USA before entering service for United Airlines in June of 1991. December of 2000 saw the plane move to Arizona for storage before being flown to Gander in Ireland in January of 2003. The jumbo then went into service with Ariana Afghan Airlines for the remainder of 2003 until being leased to Libyan Arab Airlines. In 2004 it was registered onto the Armenian Aircraft Register before being flown by IRS Airlines of Nigeria and later leased to Air Van Airlines of Armenia. It was later put into storage in Jakarta before being painted in Grand Comoros colours, an
island off Africa. The jetliner was leased to Iran Air in August of 2007 and was eventually sold for scrap in 2015. Qantas’s Boeing 737 – Geelong The 737-838 Boeing rolled of the Washington State production line in June of 2008 and arrived into Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport in July of 2008, flying from Seattle, via Honolulu and Nadi. The plane is registered VH-VZD and was christened Geelong. In 2012 the plane was decorated with African animals as part of Qantas’s Frequent Flyer program promotion with communications carrier Optus. The jet currently has three rows of business class making for 12 passengers and 156 economy class seats in a three, three configuration. HMAT A2 Geelong The first ship to be named Geelong was a passenger liner that was completed in 1904, for most of the ships’ life it sailed backwards and forwards from Britain to Australia ferrying new Australian emigrants to our land. In August 1914 the Geelong and many others like her were requisitioned for World War One. The ship was converted from a 540 passenger liner to a 1600-person troop ship that was now known as HMAT A2 Geelong. Her time as a troop ship was short-lived as she sunk in the Mediterranean after colliding with another ship in January 1916. At the time of her sinking HMAT A2 Geelong was

carrying cargo to London from Sydney. HMAS Geelong (J201) The HMAS Geelong was one of 60 Bathurst class corvettes that were built for World War II service. The vessel was built at the Naval Dockyard in Williamstown and launched by the wife of the then Governor of Victoria Lord Winston Dugan on the 22nd April 1941. The vessel began its service as a minesweeper and anti-submarine patrol ship up the east coast of Australia before being sent to New Caledonia in March of 1942 to do similar tasks before returning to Australian waters and serving time convoying ships between Sydney and Brisbane. The HMAS Geelong received a refit in 1944 and was assigned to the waters around New Guinea and served as an escort for ships passing through the Sought west pacific area and antisubmarine sweeper. On October 18th 1944 HMAS Geelong collided with the York an American tanker and sank off the coast of New Guinea north of Landemark, fortunately no lives were lost. HMAS received two battle honours for her wartime service, one for the Pacific campaign of 1942-44 and the second for New Guinea Service in 1944. HMAS Geelong (FCPB 215)

The second HMAS Geelong was launched in April 1984 after being built in Cairns, North Queensland. With the Motto “Strive to Succeed” the Freemantle class patrol boat served the Royal Australian Navy until July 2006 when it was decommissioned at HMAS Coonawarra in Darwin. The HMAS Geelong was part of a fleet of 14 similar ships. The vessel had a length of 41.9 metres and a beam of 7.79 metres and was propelled by 2 MTU series 538 diesel engines and could reach a speed of 30 knots. HMAS Geelong was primary used for border security protecting or fishing areas, immigration control and drug law enforcement. Geelong Star Originally a 1983 built Dutch ship known as the Dirk Dirk, the Geelong Star is a fishing trawler that was based in the Geelong Port from 2015 to 2016. The star received a lot of media attention at the time due to protests about its fishing operations. Operated by Seafish Tasmania, the 95-metre factory trawler had permission to catch 16,500 tonnes of jack mackerel, red bait and blue mackerel each year. The problem with this type of fishing is that it is very hard to avoid catching dolphins and seals in the process, and it is inevitable that a few of these magnificent creatures get killed.
43
While the Geelong Star’s operations had been suspended from time to time following incidents where albatross, dolphins and seals have been harmed, fishing operations soon kick back into action after the operators agree to additional mitigation measure imposed by authorities. Eventually after several calls from protesters and MPs to permanently ban the Geelong Star from fishing our waters, the operators of the ship gave up on Australian operations and the ship returned to European waters under her original name. V/line N464 Locomotive – City of Geelong The City of Geelong locomotive is a V/Line passenger train that went into service on the 29th of September 1986. Originally painted tangerine orange and grey, the locomotive now wears the V/Line red, grey and yellow colours. The diesel electric locomotive is one of 25 produced in Somerton, a suburb of Melbourne. The locomotive is 20.03 metres long and has a weight of 123 tonnes. Its massive engines can produce 2476 horsepower and run at a maximum speed of 130 kph. The locomotive works between regional centres of Victoria and Melbourne, complementing the more modern Bombardier VLocity services throughout the state.

Eastern Beach Geelong One of the best and most loved Geelong places to visit is Eastern Beach. Located at the eastern end of the Waterfront, it’s the city’s favourite spot to play, and it’s one of the great places in Geelong for families with kids. Here you’ll find the iconic promenade, a kiddies pool, and a shark-proof swimming enclosure. Kids love the playground, water activities, and the Giant Skywheel, and adults enjoy the lush lawns, barbecues, and nearby cafe. You can read our full guide to Eastern Beach by clicking here.
Geelong Ferris Wheel A trip to the Geelong Waterfront isn’t complete without a ride on the Giant Sky Wheel. Offering spectacular views of the Geelong beachfront and Corio Bay, the Ferris Wheel is the largest in the southern hemisphere. At night it lights up in a kaleidoscope of colour with over 24 dazzling light patterns – a Geelong must-see. The Sky Wheel visits Geelong for six months of the year (Oct-March). You’ll find it perched beside the Geelong Yacht Club. Rides last between 7-10 minutes.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee. A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing. On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel. There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork. The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

This is a wonderful way to see Corio Bay, the Geelong CBD, Barwon River, Torquay, and the famous Bells Beach. Operating daily from the Yarra Street Pier, flights start at $59.00 pp for 5 minutes. Geelong Carousel The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel. One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today. Challenge Brain Cancer 2021 Peace of Mind X Westfield Geelong partnership Peace of Mind Foundation is partnering with Westfield Geelong to host a mini version of the ‘Amazing Race’ on Saturday 2 October. The inaugural “Challenge Brain Cancer” will see teams competing within Westfield Geelong to raise awareness and funds for our quest to see that ‘Every family in Australia impacted by Brain Cancer will get the support they need.’ Brain Cancer kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer yet receives one of the lowest levels of funding and support. Most of that limited funding goes into Brain Cancer research. We all know how essential research is to finding ways to combat brain cancer in the future. We applaud that work.
However, research for the future will NOT help those living with brain cancer in the ‘here and now’. That’s where the Peace Foundation comes in.
of
Mind
We’re a not-for-profit body providing practical support for those fighting brain cancer now. We’re also raise awareness about the needs of people with brain cancer and advocate for them within the community. So, join us to “Challenge Brain Cancer”. This, first of its kind, event is already attracting many competitors and will draw hundreds of spectators. We invite you to be involved too.
Both Westfield and Peace of Mind are working to make a difference by bringing the community together to support those with brain cancer. You can register your team via the link here. Do You Have Enough For Retirement?
RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly
Do you have enough for retirement? The answer is Yes. You may be surprised, but yes, you do indeed have enough for retirement – although we could all do with a bit more. In fact, if you feel that you don’t have enough, it’s purely because you’ve seen too many advertisements for those glamorous lifestyle retirement villages. But as with anything in life, you can look up and you can look down. So your “wealth” actually only depends on your attitude. WHAT DO YOU HAVE? Remember, in retirement, there’s no more pressure to get yourself and your family out the door every morning, and there’s no more idiotic bosses or stressful deadlines, or office politics to endure. So you can now move into a new world of purposeful living, which should include finding your own niche as you reengineer your life.
Now we all need some additional income in retirement, and retirees also need to create and maintain social relationships.
But don’t go too big, as you have to be able to pack and send them in a moderately sized box, protected by a flood of popcorn.
Here’s just one example how you can thrive and achieve both – by creating and selling paper mache elephants
The best approach is to create individual skeletons for the legs, the body and the trunk from chicken wire, and eventually join them together.
SUCCESS PROJECT - PAPER MACHE ELEPHANTS
And they dry, the whole family can then participate in the painting.
When you create paper mache elephants you’ll be creating a “profitable hobby” for yourself, and simultaneously you’ll be enhancing your social networks.
Then sell them on etsy.com to anyone who is looking for an interesting piece of home decoration.
Think of them as floor items that sell well on Etsy. Paper mache elephants are easy although time consuming - to build and dry, as they are basically formed from old newspaper with a simple glue made inexpensively from flour and water, all draped over a skeleton.
BONUS - the good news is that you can name your price - because anyone who wants one won’t quibble. If they need it, they’ll pay whatever you ask (within reason, of course). As an indication, a paper mache elephant about table height could be worth $120-$150.

Whatever your thing is, your domain name is an important part. We want to make that part better. Ever since Childhood, I’ve been distracted by moving pictures. McCartney makes the
BIGGEST commitment of his
CAREER
and reaps the rewards
Instantaneously. Michael Day & Keira Sloetjes
Despite multiple covid tests, exemptions, all the challenges thrown in his way and a massive roller-coaster of determination and passion nothing was going to stop former world team championship winner ‘Jake McCartney’ jumping on that plane in July, hailing from Ballarat in the state of Victoria and basing himself in the UK for the next six months to pursue an incredible opportunity that isn’t available here in Australia. The Ultimate Pool Pro Series invited 32 of the world’s best players to compete across 4 weekends for a total prize fund of around $270,000 AUD. Although this is a huge commitment to the Pro Series, his decision has already been vindicated as he made an almost perfect start to his stay in the UK and life as a player on the Ultimate Pool Professional Series being rewarded with a maiden live televised major title, a £4,000 payday and his best win of his career after defeating England’s Shane Thompson 6-3 in the final to win Pro Event 2.
The newly adopted Stokie began his quest with an impressive 6-1 first round win over the in-form Storry and then dispatched 2012 world champion John Roe 6-4 in the last 16. In the last eight he needed to keep his nerve in order to oust former back-to-back world junior champion Jordan Church in a decider. In the last four he comfortably saw off 2019 world finalist Dom Cooney to set up a date with England’s Shane Thompson in ashes clash on the table.A predictably close opening half to the encounter ensued, but McCartney established an advantage in the second half and would celebrate success with a few frames to spare.
Across multiple states, Australians purchased subscriptions through the Ultimate Pool Website and at all times of the night watched on eagerly in anticipation as Jake McCartney potted his way through the tournament playing some of the world best cueists, every cent worth it to be able to watch such an incredible quality of players and streams.
Shane Thompson was tremendous in getting to the final, dropping only eight frames on route, including a 6-3 elimination of reigning six-time world champion Michael Hill. Whilst he will be disappointed not to take home the trophy, he can console himself with the runner-up prize of £2,000.
Having narrowly lost in the opening round of Pro Event 1 to world blackball champion Scott Gillespie after breaking dry in the decider and watching his opponent clear up, McCartney showed determination and bounced back in the best way he possibly could during the subsequent second pro event of the weekend.
You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who begrudges the popular Aussie this title – the most significant individual accolade of his career to date. He overcame several issues travelling over there and has quickly acclimatised to the foreign table conditions and equipment with long practice sessions at the venue.
Jake McCartney’s next tournament is just around the corner, starting on the 17th of September and he has also found himself teaming up with Shane thompson to play in the Ultimate Pool Pair’s Cup over the next 5 months. If you would like to subscribe and get involved in all the hype you can do this at www.ultimatepoolgroup.com This sport has the potential too evolve here in Victoria and across Australia. One of the major challenges venues face is not being given the publicity and exposure they deserve. ‘Pockets’ in Tullamarine Victoria is looking to the future of cue sports, using their determination and drive to take every opportunity they can to branch out and bring more to the table for players of all different levels of ability. In time hopefully we can see this expand, for now let’s get behind Ultimate Pool, purchase a subscription and cheer on our Aussie Jake Mccartney while he takes on the best of the best!

FC Leopold FC Leopold like all sports clubs at the moment are unsure what the remainder of the season holds. Lockdown and Covid restrictions have once again halted the season. In the meantime committee are instead looking towards the 2022 season and are locking in sponsors, planning for new kits, are planning for basic scenario presentations and are doing projections for next season. We hope to do some things over the summer break instead and hope this will work in our favour of encouraging people back into the sport after this seasons stop go stop pattern. While we don’t have an offical pavilion update we are hoping things will progress at season close and have acquired a container permit in order to store things while the pavilion gets underway. FC Leopold is definitely ready for bigger and brighter things in the new season. We have our lights and soon to be pavilion. Now all we need is the season and numbers to allow for a great 2022 season. We are in the position next season to take on board more sponsors, so if any businesses are interested please email info@fcleopold.com.au for more information. We’d like to wish all clubs the best for the remainder of the year - regardless of what the season brings forward. It has been a tough year for sport and once again the volunteers go above and beyond in trying their best to scrape some type of season and normality together. Onward and upward as soon as possible and a big thank you to our FC Leopold committee, coaches and volunteers for all of the work they continue to do. By Lisa de Vries Junior Coordinator
