DON’T BE A COVID IDIOT By Warren Strybosch

As Melbournians celebrate the removal of the ‘Ring of Steal’ and all Victorian’s are able to start getting out and about albeit with some restrictions still in force, it is a timely reminder to not be one of those COVID IDIOTS that make things difficult for those around them. I spoke to a restaurant owner when COVID restrictions had first eased and they were allowed 20 people in their premises to dine. He shared with me a story of a group of five locals who had booked a table to eat one night at his restaurant. He confirmed the booking the day before. On the day they did not turn up. Not only that, but they did not call to cancel their booking. The owner of the restaurant said he could understand that things happen and bookings might need to change, but to not have the decency to call to cancel or rebook was a bit below the belt. The owner has learnt his lesson and now takes credit card details with each booking and a down payment if customers want to book a table. “All because of one group of idiots, I have had to implement this new booking rule. I had hired staff that night expecting the restaurant to be full. That booking ended up costing me money”, he said.

At Find Maroondah we are trying to support as many local businesses as possible. We provide all cafes, restaurant and takeaway businesses in Maroondah and the surrounding region the opportunity to advertise in the Find Maroondah for free by placing their discount offers in the paper. This is a new fund-raising initiative we are trying to get up and running to support Not-ForProfits. The business owners who supply

the offers will benefit from additional patronage whilst helping the NFP along the way – everyone wins. We would encourage all local residents to do the right thing by these local businesses in our community, especially those who have suffered the most. Support local and each other. Don’t be a COVID IDIOT.

Google Chrome update to block mixed content downloads By Warren Strybosch

Google has announced a plan to begin blocking mixed content downloads in Google Chrome to protect users from insecure downloads. Google’s phased rollout plan begins with a browser warning and then advances to blocking mixed content downloads. Google’s effort began in September and will continue through the next several Chrome releases. What’s impacted? This may affect your end users’ ability to access non-HTTPS downloads or images started on secure pages within Salesforce. 1. Images If a user is viewing a secure webpage (HTTPS), and if any of the content displayed as part of the webpage is hosted on a non-secure link (HTTP),then the content (for example, image or video) will be displayed as a broken image.

2. Downloads If a user is viewing a secure webpage (HTTPS), if there is a download link or attachment in the webpage, and if the corresponding content is hosted on a non-secure site (HTTP or FTP only), then clicking on the link will result in error. What action can customers take? To avoid mixed content, broken images or failed downloads, you can choose

not to upgrade at this time or rollback to a previous version of Google Chrome. Why is Google making this change? Google is making this change to improve user privacy and security while using Chrome. This change will present a clearer browser security user experience to end users. As a first step, Google is focusing on insecure downloads started on secure pages.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) reopening roadmap: metropolitan Melbourne By Warren Strybosch

Staying Safe

As restrictions ease it is more important than ever  that we act every day to keep ourselves and others safe. These actions below can help protect you from coronavirus (COVID-19). Stay safe by washing your hands regularly, wearing a face mask when you leave home, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, and keeping at least 1.5 metres from others. Keep your friends and family safe by meeting outdoors. There is a lower risk of spreading coronavirus (COVID-19) between people if you are outdoors. Face masks must be worn by all Victorians when they leave home, unless they have a lawful reason not to. If you have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) get tested and stay home. Stay at home if you feel unwell.

Restrictions are easing from 11:59pm on Sunday 8 November 2020

Third Step restrictions apply across Victoria. The same restrictions apply in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne. •

• •

You can travel between regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne. There are no limits on how far you can travel or the reasons you can travel. You do not need a permit to travel. The 25km limit on how far you can travel no longer applies. You can go on holiday in Victoria and book accommodation. You can go camping. You can book accommodation to share with the people you live with, your intimate partner, and up to two other people and their dependents. Face masks must be worn when you leave home. You can have up to two people visit you at home each day. Infants under 12 months are not included in this cap, and other dependents can also attend if they cannot be left unattended or cared for in another setting. The two people may be from different households and may visit

separately. Your intimate partner is not included in the cap. Outdoor gatherings in a public place are limited to up to 10 people, infants under 12 months not included in the cap. A public place means an area that everyone can access, for example a local park or the beach. Cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants can serve up to 70 people outdoors and up to 40 people indoors. Smaller venues can seat a smaller number of customers in line with density limits and spacing requirements. Patrons must sign-in. Indoor exercise, including gyms, are open with limits on the number of people in spaces. Exercise and classes can resume with up to 10 people per indoor space and a limit of 20 people per facility. Equipment must be cleaned between uses. You must wear a face mask unless you are out of breath. Exercise must be non-contact. Temporary structures can be set up to divide spaces, subject to the overall indoor cap of 20 and a density limit of 1 person per 8m2. Indoor non-contact sport can also resume for those aged 18 years and under. Up to 20 people can participate in the indoor exercise (like a dance class, indoor community sport is limited to the minimum number of people required to play the sport, up 20 people). There are limits on spectators to one parent, guardian, or carer where the child requires supervision. Non-contact means that the activity can be done within a distance of 1.5 metres. Indoor pools can open for all ages, for up to 20 people or the density limit (1 person per 4m2) – whichever is lower. Outdoor religious gatherings can be held near a place of worship with up to 50 people plus a faith leader. While attending a religious gathering there are steps you need to take to keep yourself and others safe including not sharing food, drink or items. You must also wear a mask, unless you have exemption. Indoor religious gatherings can be held with up to 10 people per group (plus a faith leader), and 20 people per facility. and others safe, including not sharing food, drink or items. You must also wear a mask, unless you have an exemption. There will be restrictions in place that includes limiting the service length to a maximum of 90 minutes and maintaining at least 5 metres between each group of 10. Funerals will be allowed with up to 50 people if held outdoors and up to 20 people if held indoors. This limit doesn’t include infants under 12 months of age, or the people required to conduct the funeral. Community venues, including libraries and neighbourhood houses, are open for up to 20 people indoors with a maximum of 10 people per space, subject to density limits. Real estate inspections and auctions can be held with up to 10 people from different households, plus the owners/residents of the property and the real estate agent. Indoor entertainment venues, including cinemas and theatres, can open with up to 20 people per space, subject to density limits. There can be up to 20 people in each space (for example, a screening room or gallery space) and staggered performance times to avoid crowds in foyers and bathrooms. Smaller venues can seat a smaller number of customers. Electronic gaming may open in venues. Patrons playing electronic games are included in the 40 person indoor patron cap for a venue. Venues can have up to 10 patrons (equivalent to 25% of the indoor patron cap) in electronic gaming rooms, subject to density limits, maintaining at least 1.5 metres between players, and with every second machine turned off.

Who does this apply to, and when? Third Step restrictions apply to everybody in Victoria. Is this compulsory, or voluntary? It is compulsory. You Are Not Alone

By Warren Strybosch

It was devastating to receive a phone call from a close friend last week, who rang to share with me that our mutual friend’s only child had just committed suicide. I was in shock when I heard the news. It took me a few days before I could call my friend about his son’s death. I did not know what to say and could only listen as he shared with me what had happened and how he was feeling. The young man was 27 years of age, very smart, and was working in an area that was going to make a real difference in the world. What I did not know was that he was struggling with depression and in the end, he had decided he had had enough of life. His death prompted me to message some of my other male friends to see how they were going. Both friends stated they were not in a good place, and did not want me to call, but they both appreciated the fact that I had reached out. The following weekend I met up with a mate I had not seen for over two years. He ended up crying in my backyard andshared with me that he had been in a very dark place a few months earlier. Many people are struggling right now. You might be reading this and struggling yourself. I want to encourage you all that you are not alone. Whilst no one might be able to fully understand what you are going through, there are people out there who care about you. Please don’t become silent in your pain. Reach out to someone and share how you are feeling. A problem shared might be a problem halved. At least allow someone to walk alongside you to provide the support you need.

There are several organisations that provide much of the support and education for people with mental illness and their families and carers throughout Australia.

FREE Kinder for 2021 By Warren Strybosch

Education has always been a key driver for the Labor Party and today is no different. On a day when all students in Victoria are sitting their VCE English Exam, the state government has announced that Kindergarten will be provided free of charge in 2021. This is an estimated $169.6 million policy and will support all care providers of young children and it is anticipated to save families about $2000 in 2021. Given the state budget is going to be handed down later this month, this might the first of many bite size announces we will come to see as budget day approaches. “Not only will free kinder save families thousands of dollars - it’ll get more kids into kinder, back early childhood services and workers, and help support more parents, especially women, into the workforce,” early childhood minister Ingrid Stitt said. Also, the government also announced grants will be made available to allow more schools to provide before and after-school care.

Property in SMSF - Valuations Required Annually ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

The ATO has provided further guidance with regard to meeting regulation 8.02B in relation to valuations of fund assets. In the past, a SMSF trustee could provide a valuation to the auditor every third where the fund was paying a pension or held in-house assets. The ATO has stated that is no longer sufficient and auditors are required to make sure the trustees have supplied valuations every year. When it comes to property, a qualified independent valuer must be used if the property equates to a significant proportion of the fund’s asset value. If the property does not form a significant part of the fund’s assets, then an in-house evaluation can be obtained. However, if the price of the property either falls or increases due to unusually events e.g. COVID-19, an external valuation will be required. The auditor will need to make sure that the supporting evidence meets the SMSF valuation guidelines set by the ATO.

area. The evidence needs to support the market value of the property as close to 30th of June as possible. Additionally, unless the property is sold, a single item of evidence will no longer be sufficient. The ATO is expecting to see a variety of supporting evidence to meet regulation 8.02B e.g. valuation, contract of sake, comparable sales results, and rates notice, to mention a few. For commercial properties, it may be sufficient to provide net income yield as long as the tenants are unrelated parties to the trustees.

It is no longer acceptable to simply get a real estate agent appraisal stating what the property might sell for in the

The trustee could also provide net income yield where it is a commercial property, it said. This would not be sufficient on

its own, however, and only appropriate where tenants are unrelated. With the requirement to provide an Investment Strategy and now yearly valuations of properties, the ongoing cost to trustees of SMSFs continue to rise.

How much will I get back from my taxes? FINANCIAL PLANNING By Mari Nguyen

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) refunds billions of dollars to over three quarters of all taxpayers annually, but it takes a little effort to ensure you get as much tax back as you can. But while Australian taxpayers receive on average around $2,5001in tax refunds annually, there’s no guarantee two people earning the same income, will receive the same tax refund. That’s because many Australians fail to maximise their tax deductions they’re legally entitled to, and even worse, ATO estimates around 200,000 taxpayers who failed to lodge tax returns last year, would have received a refund. Getting your financial house in order While tax deductions are the easiest way to maximise your tax refund, there’s some homework to be done to ensure you maximise the tax you get back. Much of this homework revolves around good record keeping, to ensure everything you claim as a tax deduction is substantiated with a valid receipt. For example, if you’re claiming driving expenses for a car that you own, make sure they’re diarised along with dates and mileage. It’s no different when you’re claiming back charitable donations for any amount over $2, so make sure you retain all receipts.

The key variables Most of the key variables that impact on how much tax you get back, revolve around legitimate work-related expenses that your employer hasn’t already reimbursed you for. If you’re unsure of what’s tax deductable, why not check what other people in your job are claiming as deductions? But regardless of the industry you’re in, generally speaking, most deductions include expenses relating to: • • • • • • • •

Vehicle and travel expenses for travel between work and home Clothing, laundry and dry-cleaning expenses Mobile phone, internet and home phone expenses Overtime meals Self-education expenses Tools, equipment and other equipment Other work-related deductions, like union fees and professional subscriptions Expenses incurred on things like heating, cooling, lighting while regularly working from home

If you’re unsure about what work-related expenses you can claim, check out the ATO website. Super, investment costs or other items Another way to receive a bigger tax refund is either by making a personal

contribution to your super or by adding to your spouse’s fund before the end of the financial year. A maximum rebate can be achieved by contributing $3,000 into super. Given that tax matters relating to investments are inherently complex, having a professional correctly review other investments can return in spades. For example, it may be appropriate to consider offsetting the loss you’re carrying on any assets (like shares and units) against a profit made on the sale of others’ assets, on which capital gains tax is now payable. A timely review of the income protection insurance (you already have through your super), can also result in tax benefits. That’s because a policy taken out in your own name (this financial year) can be claimed against assessable income, thereby potentially reducing the up-front cost of protecting your income. Similarly, if you earn more than $90,000 (singles) or $180,000 (families and couples), you can avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge(calculated at the rate of 1% to 1.5% of your income) by having hospital cover, which in addition to providing the cover you need, may also be cheaper than the surcharge itself.

Changes to Responsible Lending Obligations on Banks to Make it Easier for Borrowers to Access Home Loans MORTGAGE BROKERING By Reece Droscher

In a recent Federal Government announcement there are plans underway to loosen the responsible lending obligations on Banks and other credit providers to make it easier for everyday Australians to access credit products, such as Home loans, Credit Cards and Business Loans. So, what are these changes and what does this mean for everyday Australians trying to buy their first home, upsize into a bigger home or refinance their current loan and get a better deal? What are the Responsible Lending Obligations? When the Global Financial Crisis hit in the late 2000s the Australian Government at the time introduced the National Consumer Credit Protection Act, which was designed to make the lenders responsible for verifying whether a person applying for finance could afford to borrow. This would protect households from providing false information, from taking on loans they had no chance of repaying, and from predatory lending practices. The responsible involve:

lending

obligations

making reasonable enquiries about a consumer’s financial situation, and their requirements and objectives taking reasonable steps to verify a consumer’s financial situation making a preliminary assessment (if you are providing credit assistance) or final assessment (if you are the credit provider) about whether the credit contract is ‘not unsuitable’ for the consumer if a consumer requests it, being able to provide the consumer with a written copy of the preliminary assessment or final assessment (as relevant). During the Royal Commission into Banking it was determined that these rules needed tightening, so in fear of legal action the lenders introduced further hurdles that borrowers needed to overcome before they would be deemed to be eligible for finance. These hurdles were primarily around the first rule: making reasonable enquiries about a consumer’s financial situation.

For example, lenders would conduct meticulous examinations of an applicants spending habits to determine what their actual living expenses were, rather than relying on the standard Household Expenditure Measure (HEM). This resulted in a higher percentage of applications being declined for credit assistance, as it was assumed that an applicant’s current living expenses would continue unchanged when a new loan commitment was added, so the new repayment would be unaffordable. Why are they being relaxed? After a recent court ruling where it was deemed that borrowers could change their spending habits depending on their circumstances, and using current living expenses as a way of determining affordability was flawed, the Government now wants to reduce the “red tape” involved in accessing credit to stimulate the economy and get people spending. This will result in reductions in the amount of paperwork an applicant for a loan needs to provide, as well as lenders taking much less time to process an application by removing the need to scour over account statements to see what is being spent on Netflix or Uber Eats. Who will benefit from these changes? Theoretically all potential borrowers will benefit from these changes to the rules around the treatment of living expenses. However the major beneficiary could be first home buyers. Previously they were treated harshly as they may have been living at home, with a significant disposable income but did not need to adhere to a budget. So typically they would spend more on recreation and entertainment than on utilities or general insurance. Lenders would not make any allowance for their ability to adjust their spending habits once they owned a home. With these changes lenders will not need to verify a borrower’s financial situation to the same extent, so the impact on current spending habits on the loan decision may no longer be a deciding factor. Another sector that should benefit are self-employed consumers. This sector generally declares a lower than standard

level of living expenses, as a number of these costs are claimed through their business. With lenders able to use this information to determine finance eligibility these types of applicants should be able to access credit more freely. When do these changes take effect? The proposed changes are not legislated to come into effect until March 2021. We are currently operating under the same tight lending rules and regulations, and the lender has the onus of responsibility for ensuring the credit is affordable and ‘not unsuitable’ to the borrower. Once these changes are made and the onus of responsibility falls to the borrower, it is important to note that significant regulation will remain in place to ensure lenders operate in a prudent fashion. Lenders will still be required to ensure reasonable enquiries are made to determine an applicant’s income, estimated living expenses will still need to be declared as part of the application process and an applicant’s current credit exposure will also need to be verified. It will be interesting to see whether these changes remain in place in the long term, given they are being introduced as an economic stimulus. Should we see economic recovery built on these types of measures, this relaxation of responsible lending obligations may only be a short term measure. A mortgage broker can help borrowers navigate the way through the options to ensure they get the best outcome under the circumstances. At SHL Finance we are working with first home buyers, helping our clients negotiate a better rate with their current lender, reviewing their existing loans and discussing ways to potentially save thousands of dollars. We would love the opportunity to help you too. Please call Reece Droscher on 0478 021 757 should you want to discuss your options.

6 Essential newsletter items to increase lead generation ACCREDITED EDITOR By Susan Pierotti

Does the thought of having a newsletter give you a headache – more time taken away from the job, have no idea what to put in it, how to set it up, yet another marketing channel that may not work…? Having an online newsletter for your business is a quick, user-friendly – and often free! – way to constantly remind your customer base of your business. so they remember you when they need you. Imagine that you are a painter. If you are doing your job well, your customers won’t be calling you every week for your services. But when they need the house painted in five years time, you want them to call you, not your competitor. How are they going to remember your name? A monthly newsletter will remind them of you when they need you. However, there’s no point in having a newsletter if no one reads it. These 6 handy tips will entice your clients to read and remember you: 1. Catchy title Don’t call your newsletter ‘House Painter Newsletter #3’. Emails with ‘newsletter’ in the subject line are opened 18.7% less often than others. Find a catchy title that describes what you do. For instance, a voice coach I know names his newsletter ‘Your Voice’. Our fictional painter could call it ‘Colour your world’ or ‘Practical painting points’. 2. Quality content Don’t blatantly advertise. Entice your customers with helpful articles on products and services that they will be interested in. Use it to educate your customers – that will make them trust you more as the expert in your industry. For instance, our house painter could write about the latest trend in colours, or what’s the best non-allergenic, environmentally friendly paint. You can also set up employee profiles to develop a sense of community, have competitions and include surveys for market research. The exception to not advertising is a once-off special that you are offering, especially if it’s a seasonal offer. For instance, a Christmas offer advertised in November is a great way to encourage your customers to buy and promote

your service and products at a time when people are in the buying mood. The more engaging your content, the more people will read it. One advantage is the statistics and reports on customer behaviour that comes with an online newsletter service. 3. Easy-to-read language Make sure that your newsletter sound like you – not too chatty, certainly not formal. It has to appeal to the reader but not be dumbed down. Unlike reading on paper, we absorb information in smaller chunks every time we focus on a computer screen, tablet or mobile phone. With an online newsletter, current standard practice is that paragraphs should be two sentences long; sentences not much more than 20 words. 4. Call to Action Your newsletter should always have a call to action at the end of every article or blog post, especially if you are advertising new products (e.g. the painter with the new colour range) and services. Be sure to include your contact details and refresh your newsletter every few months with new offers. 5. Links Your newsletter content could be just a paragraph with a click to a link to your website for the full article. Besides saving you the effort of

creating new content for every internet marketing channel you have, links to relevant pages (on your website, your blogs, your social media pages) drives traffic to them and therefore increases the likelihood of internet search engines (potential new customers!) finding you. Links to external sites shows the customer that you have researched your topic and have a broader base of knowledge than just the mechanics of day-to-day business. Where do you find those sites? You can set up a free Google Alerts account that will send you relevant articles whenever you want them. 6. Images Most people learn visually so include images in your newsletter. Images not only look good, they give breathing space to a reader and can illustrate something which is hard to describe. Personal or humorous photos can be very effective. There are many free images to download over the internet (but be sure to credit the photographer). If you would like advice on newsletter content, or would like to save time and have someone else write it for you, contact Susan at Creative Text Solutions, susan@creativetext.com.au.

UNCOVERED EXPOSURE GENERAL INSURANCE By Craig Anderson

We’ve all been guilty of making assumptions at times. Some of those assumptions are quite harmless. Other assumptions however, can create massive problems which until reality bites, would not have come to light unless they were challenged. So how does this apply to insurance? It’s very easy to assume that you know how a policy works and what it will cover, especially when your first advice comes in the form of misguided but well-meaning advice offered by friends at a barbeque when they hear you’re starting your first business. So what misconception arises most often with Public Liability insurance? Many people mistakenly believe that Public and Products Liability Insurance (PL) will somehow automatically compensate them for the cost of labour and materials when they fail to properly make or install a product or service an item. This is absolutely wrong. What the policy is designed to do, is compensate the Third Party (Your Client) for damage that you have done to them or their property. A typical insuring clause will say something like: What We Cover We agree (subject to the terms, Claims Conditions, General Conditions, Exclusions, Definitions and Limits of Liability incorporated herein) to pay to You or on Your behalf all amounts which

You shall become legally liable to pay as Compensation in respect of: 2.1.1 Personal Injury, and/or 2.1.2 Property Damage; and/or 2.1.3 Advertising Injury; Happening during the Period of Insurance within the Geographical Limits, in connection with the Business or Your Products and/or work performed by You or on Your behalf and caused by or arising out of an Occurrence. However, and it is a big however, Exclusions applied to the policy remove cover from the insuring clause and are not limited to those listed below: Asbestos, Breach of Professional Duty, Contractual Liability, Damage to Products, Defamation, Electronic Data, Employers Liability, Faulty Workmanship, Fines and Penalties, Liquidated Damages, Loss of Use, Listed Human Diseases, Pollution, Property Owned by You, Product Guarantee, Product Recall, Terrorism, Vehicles. (I’ve left a few out for the sake of brevity and only included the headings without the exclusion wordings)

So as you can see, we’re only just scratching the surface, but already some of you may have felt their stomach drop a little. My suggestion is to seek out the advice of a broker, and to accurately describe everything your business does, so your risk exposures can be covered, or managed out. Policies are not all made equal, and expert guidance may be necessary to ensure the policy you purchase is the best fit available for your activities. Remember that if there’s a mishap, the policy is a legal contract. The insurer is only obliged to pay for what they have agreed to indemnify you for. Good advice usually pays for itself in my experience. Perhaps it’s time to get some? As always, any advice in this article has been prepared without taking into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Because of that, before acting on the above advice, you should consider its appropriateness (having regard to your objectives, needs and financial situation).

You won’t be compensated for the cost of your faulty goods, or for your time when you have to re-do work which was faulty. You won’t be covered for Recall of faulty goods either, which means if you have sold or installed faulty items you wear the cost of returning and replacing them yourself.

WHAT TO ASK YOUR ARCHITECT AT YOUR FIRST MEETING

ARCHITECT By Kathy Ismail

You’re about to meet your architect for the first time. What do you want to achieve? Will you get on with her? Will you be able to work together compatibility with him? Will he or she understand the vision you have for your ‘forever’ home or your new commercial premises and have the expertise to bring it into being? Come with some prepared information. Write down all things you ‘must’ have and desire in your new space, and also itemise the flaws in your current home. A picture tells a thousand words so bring a range of images from websites, Pinterest, Instagram, real estate ads, magazine cuttings etc. of home designs you like. Working with your architect The first thing you will need to do is to be really clear on what you want and to express your wishes accordingly. This is where the images you bring will help. Don’t be afraid to ask questions up front if there’s something you’re not clear about. You won’t look stupid and it will prevent misunderstandings later on. Do you want a modern, contemporary or reproduction design for your home or office? Some architects specialise in certain designs; some design in all styles. Be open to the architect’s ideas. Your lifestyle and business requirements may not fit with your chosen design. Architects are trained to dig deeper to see what you really want. Your architect will be able to guide you to something that is practical but may align with your vision in ways you hadn’t imagined.

For instance, if you want a high gabled house, will you be able to reach the cobwebs and how will you change the light bulbs on those tall ceilings? A multi-level house may be your dream but do you really want to be carrying the vacuum cleaner up all those stairs? Your architect will alert you to these practicalities at the first meeting. This is the right time to talk about budget. Achieving your vision without overspending may be a challenge; compromises will probably have to be made. But don’t despair – your architect will be savvy, for example, with the latest cost-effective building materials. Ask exactly how your architect’s fees will be calculated: as a daily or hourly rate, a fixed percentage of the overall build cost or a fixed fee for the entire project. Be sure that you fully understand whatever method your architect uses. There will be a few other things to ask your architect. How long will the project take to build? Will there be only one architect involved? How often will you be updated about progress? Who will be responsible for what? Commercial questions Whether you are wanting an office, show room or combined factory and warehouse, all commercial buildings need to be fit for purpose, so your architect will need to know who will be using the building and what they will need in order to work there. Think about visitors who will be using the building – do you need large entrances for trucks, appropriate shelving and corridors inside for forklifts, underground car parking?

Your architect will be able to give you great ideas in calculating and designing all the indoor and outdoor rooms and spaces you will need, where they need to connect to and specific spatial requirements, factoring in any mechanical or electrical requirements you need. Don’t forget the outside. Architects can liven up your premises with ideas on landscaping. If your business is one that promotes sustainably efficient energy ethos or you may be wanting to extend in years to come, tell your architect now so that they can fit that into the design and the budget. You should be able to come away from your first meeting with a list of action points for you both. It will ensure everyone is on the same page and vastly increase the chances of you hitting the ground running in your second meeting. Contact KiR Architecture at contact@ kirarchitecture.com.au for help with planning your building projects. We have a questionnaire that could potentially help you in narrowing down your ideas for your next dream home. We are always happy to answer any inquiries.

What builders need to know about installing Garage Doors GARAGE DOORS

By Chantal Djuric

Can you remember what you were doing nine years ago? Let me take you back to the evening of 3 February 2011. You may have been enjoying a barbecue in the garden, the kids were probably grumbling about being back at school or possibly you were all down at the beach. The people of north Queensland were busy battening down the hatches on everything that moved, preparing for the most horrific night of their lives. About to hit their homes was the largest cyclone to invade Queensland since 1918 – Cyclone Yasi. The storm caused an estimated $3.5 billion in damage, making it the costliest tropical cyclone to hit Australia on record. Overall, approximately 1,000 people reported significant damage to their homes. In Townville, roofs were torn off buildings and sent hurtling down the streets. Residents reported the sound of glass breaking throughout the night as windows were broken as the storm moved through. There was also severe damage to the fittings and outside fabric of people’s homes. One of those items on the outside was garage doors. Colin Blair, CEO at the time of Standards Australia, reported: ‘It became clear that garage doors were a point of weakness during Cyclone Yasi. As a result, our technical committee has updated the Australian/New Zealand Standard to improve building resilience.’ The AGDA is the industry voice of the Australian Garage Door Industry, set up to promote professionalism, safety and compliance for all the products and installation involved in the largest and heaviest moving part of a building; namely, the garage door. At the time of Cyclone Yasi, the President of AGDA, Mike Fraser, lobbied the government to enforce full mandatory compliance to Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) standards to achieve building resilience. Things builders need to know Mike Fraser said: ‘The responsibility does not fall on one party. It is in fact the

responsibility of the installers, builders and designers of buildings to ensure compliance in relation to garage doors, not just manufacturers.’ The relevant Standard for Doors (as noted in the National Construction Code/ Building Code of Australia for cyclonic wind areas) is cited as AS/NZS 4505:2012 ‘Garage doors and other large access doors’, and includes information that installers, builders and building designers need to have an understanding of, such as information regarding the loads that the doors apply to the buildings, as well minimum performance requirements for structural loads applied to the substrate to which the door is affixed. This Standard for Doors applies to the whole of Australia, not just in cycloneprone areas. You as a builder also will need to obtain an occupancy permit if the building work will adversely affect the structural soundness of the building, including the garage. Working with a garage door technician The good news is that garage door technicians prefer to collaborate with builders concerning garage door installation. There are several advantages for the building owner when this happens. Collaboration between all parties means that the cost of the door will be cheaper for the building owner because you, the builder, will get a discount price due to

the quantity of doors you buy for all your other current projects. Builders get also get the warranty that the building owner would get; this means that the garage door itself is covered from the time of purchase, not just after it’s installed. If you’re a builder, give the garage door business you’re working with a copy of your OH&S standards before the technicians arrive onsite as these are what garage door technicians will follow. When it comes to invoicing, don’t be afraid to ask for a package rather than itemised and separate invoices, if that’s your preference to suits your budget. An experienced garage door business will expect this. If you are working on a repair job for insurance purposes, an professional garage door business will understand the need for timely repairs to meet your and the insurer’s KPIs, they will have ready and open communication between the insured and the case managers and offer a good standard of workmanship. LACTATION CONSULTANT By Dr. Joanna Strybosch

Breast refusal is one of those distressing situations that can seem to appear out of the blue in a mother’s breastfeeding journey and it can be difficult to navigate through. It can occur at any age but tends to show up most commonly in babies around 3 to 4 months of age. Breast refusal is sometimes referred to as a “nursing strike”. What mums experience is that her baby suddenly starts to refuse going to the breast to feed. Characteristically, her baby fusses, cries or screams whenever she tries to feed him, often starting up as soon she even brings her baby towards her. Often her baby simply will not latch. Or he might start a feed but then abruptly stop and turn away and cry, even when hungry. Other distressing behaviours include arching his back, turning his head away and physically pushing away from mum. Furthermore, breast refusal behaviour can be inconsistent from one feed to the next and from one day to the next. It is no wonder that breast refusal is both distressing and stressful for mothers. Often mums feel worried and anxious because her baby is simply not taking in the milk she knows he needs and she may feel that her baby is rejecting her. Mums will usually be stressed and distressed from repeated unsuccessful attempts at feeding her baby and struggling to try and get him to latch. And it’s also very normal for mums to feel frustrated at her baby’s refusal to feed. Often a breast refusing baby will also refuse a bottle too, which can further add to the stress and anxiety that mums will feel. Clinically, these situations can quickly escalate, leaving both mum and baby in distress. A breast refusing baby is a baby whose nervous system is in a heightened state. Basically, baby is experiencing a fightflight stress response. In this heightened sympathetic state, a baby simply cannot relax to latch and feed. There are many reasons why a baby may begin to refuse the breast ranging from underlying latching issues including tongue tie, recent illness, pain and discomfort especially around the mouth or throat, being overtired and not being regularly well rested, distractions (which also commonly start around 3-4 months of age) and teething.

BREAST REFUSAL There can sometimes be underlying issues of low supply or slow letdown. Babies are sensitive to smell too, so even a change in mums perfume or laundry detergent can put some babies off the breast. Hormonal changes in mum can also be a factor, so considation should be given to the mothers mensural cycle as well as possible pregnancy. If breast refusal strikes, what is needed are strategies to physiologically deescalate the heightened state in both baby and in mum and improve the situation by down-regulating both their nervous systems. The goal primarily is to bring the baby into a more relaxed “rest and digest” state that is conducive to feeding. There are many useful strategies that can be used to help a baby through a period of breast refusal. One of the most important, and a great strategy to try first, is using skin to skin contact. This simple technique acts as a circuit breaker for baby’s escalated state and quickly helps them to regulate. The purpose of using skin to skin contact in this situation is not to feed baby as much as to help baby have a calm and soothing experience at the breast, instead of a stressful one. The benefits to mothers and babies spending time in skin to skin contact are profound. We may have become accustomed to the practise of spending time in skin to skin contact with our newborn, but we may not think to re-visit this with a baby who is a bit older.

Research has demonstrated that after just 20 minutes in skin to skin contact, a baby’s cortisol (stress hormone) levels start to drop, their digestion and absorption of nutrients improves, and their heart rate and breathing become more stable. For mum, her oxytocin levels rise, which reduces her blood pressure and lowers her stress levels and helps her letdown reflex. Skin to skin contact between a mother and her baby is best done by undressing baby down to just a nappy, removing mums tops and putting her baby on her bare chest. The two can then cuddle up in bed, or on the couch with a blanket around them for extra warmth if required and just enjoy being together without any pressure to feed at all. If mum or baby prefers to be on the move, baby could be placed in a baby carrier, still in skin to skin contact. The purpose is to allow both mother and baby to experience all the physiological benefits of skin to skin contact without the negativity of a difficult and stressful feed. Many times, this will actually trigger baby’s innate feeding behaviours and bring baby into a calm state where feeding can be successful once more. For more information and individual advice on dealing with breast refusal, please contact a lactation consultant.

CONFIDENT, CRASHED-UP AUSSIES SET TO SPEND By Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics and Correspondent (Australian Associated Press)

The recent buoyancy of consumer confidence has yet to be reflected in retail spending, but income tax cuts and a potential interest rate decrease could lead to a shopping spree in coming months. At the same time, new figures released on Wednesday also showed there is growing demand to hire workers as the economy opens up from COVID-19 restrictions, and that there are signs the economy is moving out of recession. Retail spending fell by $448.6 million or 1.5 per cent in September compared to the previous month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics says in its preliminary data. This followed a four per cent drop in August, but retail trade still remains 5.2 per cent higher than a year earlier. It is expected to contribute to growth in the September quarter after detracting in the June quarter. AMP Capital senior economist Diana Mousina is more optimistic about the immediate outlook for retail, particularly as Victoria slowly emerges from its lockdown.

“The income boost from tax cuts, additional welfare payments and potential RBA interest rate cuts will also help the retail sector over the short-term,” she said. Consumer confidence – a pointer to future household spending – has risen for seven straight weeks, gaining momentum recently following the tax-cutting federal budget. Financial markets are also fully prepared for a cut in the cash rate to 0.10 per cent from 0.25 per cent when the Reserve Bank of Australia board meets on November 3, following recent comments from central bank officials. Separately, an indicator of future economic growth suggests Australia is moving out of recession. The WestpacMelbourne Institute leading index, which indicates the likely pace of economic activity three to nine months in the future, now stands in line with the average recorded over the 12 months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Consistent with the steady progression in the leading index, we expect growth of 2.8 per cent in 2021 and 3.5 per cent in 2022,” Westpac chief economist Bill Evans said.

“Key factors behind this stronger profile are a boost to consumer demand, as households spend around 50 per cent of the personal tax cuts, and a lift in business investment in response to the accelerated depreciation allowances.” Westpac expects that growth in both the September and December quarters of this year will be clearly in positive territory as the Australian economy opens up after the massive seven per cent economic contraction in the June quarter. There was also positive news for the employment outlook with job advertisements posted on the internet jumping 6.4 per cent in September. This included a notable 11.9 per cent surge in Victoria after two months of falls during its COVID-19 lockdown, figures released by the Department of Employment show. All states and territories recorded gains in recruitment activity during the month, while seven of the eight occupational groups monitored by the department also recorded increases. Job ads were strongest for technicians and trades workers, rising 9.6 per cent in September. NOVEMBER 2020 | FIND MAROONDAH

The Importance of Training for Business Owners BOOKKEEPER By Neha Nayyar

Training is important because it represents a good opportunity for employees and business owners to grow their knowledge base and improve their job skills to become more effective in the workplace. Here’s our top 5 most important areas for training: 1. Financials - Understanding how to read these financial statements is the first step in understanding your business’ financial situation and a step towards making informed, strategic business decisions. It’s common among business owner’s to only review their financials once a year, at the end of a financial year, after it’s been prepared by their accountant. With some training Business owners can understand how to read the financial statements on a day to day basis and make those important decisions on the basis of facts and financial information. Training on financial statements creates a good basis for business owners to grow their business as an entrepreneur. 2. Marketing - How do you know whether your marketing plan is effective? Do you have a system which enables you to compare and analyse how your website or marketing campaigns are tracking? Having the ability to understand and compare your marketing tactics is highly effective for the success of any business. Marketing is often accompanied by a large cost so it is important to understand your marketing analytics to maximise the bang for your buck. A basic training on Marketing (even if you outsource it) will enable you to make correct decisions.

3. Human Resources - As a small business owner there are so many things to manage and take care of - sales, customer relationships, marketing, etc. - the list is endless. With all of these responsibilities it’s challenging to find the time for things that may seem lower on the list of priorities, like HR for example. Having a strong understanding for human resource management can have a huge impact on the culture of your organisation and the well-being of your staff. Being knowledgeable in human resource management will enable you to develop and implement policies for your business to ensure everyone is being looked after. 4. System Operations - We all want our businesses to run smoothly and efficiently but often don’t know how to achieve this. Well, we’re here to tell you that systems and processes are essential to the longevity of every business and it’s all about having the right procedures in place to ensure your business is operating optimally. Systems often connect different departments together so it’s important to understand how to set up these systems and put them into practice. 5. Upgrading in your own industry It’s as important for you as a business owner as it is for your employees to continually grow and upgrade your skills to stay up to date with industry changes. Training in our field means you can work more efficiently each day and are always aware of new

and smarter ways of doing the same activities.

MARKETING CONSULTANT By Matthew Benn

Everyone likes to think they can ‘sell’ their products or services pretty well once they’re are in-front of a decision maker… but getting there has become harder by the day over the past couple of years. Oh the frustrations of being a small business owner; I’ve had my fair share over the past two decades. Realistically, most of these were to do with marketing and sales until I spent the time dedicated to learning and experiencing how to make them work properly. Business owners in particular have their eyes on the dollars, with good reason – it’s their money! One can be excused for trying to save money wherever possible, because money doesn’t grow on trees. However much of the frustrations business owners (and the leaders of larger businesses) go through could actually be overcome quite easily, when put through the basic filter of “right people, right seats”. Here are some things that I’ve come to realise about a more focussed point of frustration (marketing and sales) that will greatly increase your happiness and success with business, marketing and sales if you put them into action: 1. Having all staff doing things that they are highly skilled at most of the time overcomes many issues. While this truth may be blatantly obvious, it is not put into action very often; especially with small to medium enterprise in Australia (over 95% of all businesses)! Marketing and Sales are professions like accounting, plumbing and software development. Most companies don’t plan and hire with this filter when trying to grow their business. 2. Marketing and Sales need to be rolled out and led by a data driven strategic plan, after research and analysis. I call it the foundations of marketing – which most people and companies “completely miss” when developing their marketing and sales planning. It all starts with a single goal to work at achieving and flows through what your customer goes through in their buying journey – aligning that with what you are trying to attract them with. 3. Marketing and sales also need to be aligned, working together in a sequence which is very logical. The best course of action is usually very simple. If these three principles above are followed it will overcome many of the possible mistakes along the way.

WHY Doesn’t Marketing Work?! We are in consulting with the main aim of helping businesses improve and grow. Our motto is ‘Business Growth Simplified’, because it actually doesn’t need to be that hard. The same problems seem to happen in a very large percentage of businesses, not just the ones we work with. We take away the confusion by putting in place very straight forward and easy to follow frameworks, making business growth simplified. All of what I’m saying here and what we teach our clients is based off observations and statistics which are readily available. The ‘go-to’ option for most businesses is to hire sales people to bring new business in. While this used to work in decades past, and still works to some extent… is not the best way to grow a brand or sales! You may not have heard of ‘inbound marketing’. The reason “why” I’m going to talk about inbound marketing, is that it is a phrase which has been popularised for good reason. Inbound marketing needs to be planned out with a fair amount of research and then be implemented and tested to make sure that whatever salespeople are doing will work, in order to be the most effective they can be. Marketing is not rocket science, however most people think it is. The reason for this is, most people don’t do the ground work of defining and refining the foundations for their marketing with research and analysis. Using the resources you have (many are free) available today, it is quite easy to start attractional marketing with a very small budget. You will have to spend money, but if you do some in-depth research, you will find

that spending the time and money will pay off with a good Return On Investment. Hiring someone to do this can be tricky at the outset, but again if you never investigate – it will never get better. At this juncture there are many quotes I can throw out, but one is just so simple and profound it speaks volumes into this. “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity” - Einstein. So… going back to the main theme, it will be much less frustrating for you and much more rewarding in the long run… if you have: A. a strategic marketing and sales plan, based on research and analysis B. a professional marketing and/ or sales person directing these functions; C. C) who can focus their efforts on the same outcome, bringing them together in unity. If you would like to have a free chat to get some ideas of how to get over/ through your frustration with marketing and sales, give Alongside Business Consulting a call (03) 7017 2655. We have worked with many well-known national and international brands across a wide range of industries. From A-Frames and Flags, through to Floor Decals, Corflute Signs, CafĂŠ Barriers and much more, our team of experts will help you create eyecatching and effective signage solutions to suit your brand and budget.

A-FRAMES Also known as a Sandwich Board, A-Frames are a popular form of free-standing signage due to their durability, mobility, customising options, and versatility as a sales tool, for indoors and outdoors. Interchangeable corflute or composite panels are a great solution when you need to change your signs often. You might want to add a chalkboard, or whiteboard section, so you can write your own messages. Standard sizes are 450mm x 600mm, 600mm x 900mm, and 900mm x 1200mm.

FLAGS A popular and effective signage option for both indoors and outdoors, flags are printed through dye sublimation on fabric material for maximum durability. They are lightweight, easy to assemble, portable, weather resistant and can be single or doublesided. Our most popular flags are Feather and Teardrop. Feathers are great for their movement in the wind, while Teardrops stay taut and offer a focal point. Customised flag shapes, poles, grass spikes and other bases are all available depending on your application.

FLOOR DECALS Transforming your floors into an advertising space, floor graphics are gaining popularity in shopping centres, trade shows, airports and high traffic areas for brand awareness, wayfinding, safety signs and promotions. Our graphics are printed in full digital colour onto a self-adhesive vinyl with anti-slip and scuff resistant laminate on top. The vinyl we use will depend on how long you need the graphic for. UV and graffiti protection can also be applied. We can die-cut to any custom size or shape. The floor should be a smooth sealed surface, like painted concrete, tiles or laminated floors.

CORFLUTE SIGNS Corflute can be thought of as plastic corrugated cardboard. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, corflute signage is a cost-effective solution for advertising or informational signage. Popular with real estate agents, sporting clubs, construction sites, and event organisers. It is easy to handle and set up and can be cut to any size to suit your requirements. You may also choose to have eyelets to easily attach the signs with zip ties. Corflute can be printed in full colour on one, or on both sides. They can be finished with UV and weather resistant vinyls for that added protection.

CAFÉ BARRIERS Our barriers are sturdy, lightweight, and easy to set up. Designed to be weather resistant, they complement other outdoor promotional signs, providing branding consistency and a neat boundary around your space. All our vinyl barriers are sail tracked to frames with a choice of single or double interlocking feet. The frames are steel powder coated 50mm square or round tubing, and come in a range of colours. Reach out today to book a free consultation from one of our signage experts, and ensure you get current promotions by following us on Instagram @Signarama_Mitcham.

Home Electricity Use Jumps During COVID By Steven Deare

(Australian Associated Press)

Australian consumers have been using more electricity during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has added to financial stress for many. An Australian Competition and Consumer Commission study has found residential use rose significantly during the national lockdowns, which forced most people to stay at home. In Melbourne, where restrictions have lasted longest, residential electricity use increased by between 10 and 30 per cent in April and May (depending on weather) compared to the same period last year. Colder weather compounded costs for customers. Weather in Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney was colder than the 10-year average, according to the ACCC, and prompted people to use heaters more.

Yet ACCC chair Rod Sims said data suggested more customers were a month behind in paying electricity bills.

It has protected most customers from disconnections and debt collectors until October 31.

The proportion of people missing payments rose from two per cent in June to five per cent in July, according to a survey from the Consumer Policy Research Centre.

The regulator also gave some relief to energy retailers, who may not collect the same level of revenue. It allowed retailers to defer the network charges of struggling retail customers for six months.

Yet the increase was greater for younger people. The two per cent missing bill payments in June climbed to 10 per cent in July.

People working from home have been able to claim some electricity costs in their tax return.

Mr Sims was concerned the problem may escalate as more people find themselves out of work. The unemployment rate is expected to rise from 6.8 per cent later this year. The Australian Energy Regulator has tried to help struggling customers during the pandemic.

Overall electricity use dropped by two per cent in the second quarter of 2020 due to low levels of business use. The ACCC report is based on more than 8.5 million bills from more than 1.5 million customers.

We walk you through the problems and give you solutions and results to work with!

Further Sign Australian Happy with Budget By Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics and Business Correspondent (Australian Associated Press)

If there was any doubt Australians were happy with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg’s tax cutting budget, another gauge of confidence has soared and suggests optimists are back in the driving seat. The Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment index jumped 11.9 per cent to 105 points to its highest level since July 2018. “This is an extraordinary result,” Westpac chief economist Bill Evans said. He said the index has risen 32 per cent over the last two months and is now 10 per cent above the average level seen in the six months prior to the pandemic. He believes the rise was a combination of the budget, success containing COVID-19 and the expectation the Reserve Bank is likely to further cut interest rates when its board meets in November. Since 2010, the survey has conducted a post-budget question to assess how households think it will impact on their finances.

In his first public speech since the budget, shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers will tell the National Press Club the nation needed a plan to kick-start the economy out of recession while redefining the future. Instead it will be a budget remembered only as Australia’s most expensive missed opportunity.

For this budget there was a positive net balance of 9.5 per cent, suggesting a clear majority believe it will improve their finances.

“What the Liberals served up last week wasn’t just uninspired and unimaginative, it was unworthy,” he says .

“We have never seen a budget response that showed a net positive balance until now,” Mr Evans said. However, federal Labor believes the government has not done enough to ensure the country is on track back to full employment.

“Unworthy of the moment and the challenge before us and unworthy of all those Australians who’ve carried us through this crisis.” For all the talk that these are unprecedented times, he argues, the problems gripping the economy existed long before

COVID-19 arrived and the solutions will need to endure long after it’s gone. “The big risk here for our country is that Australia might miss this once-in-ageneration chance to dig deep, to do something meaningful and lasting,” Dr Chalmers says. He says while the government has made much of its new fiscal strategy, its last one promised a surplus in the first year and every year but delivered only deficits. It also promised to pay down debt but instead it has multiplied it. “All those crates of ‘back in black’ mugs at Liberal Party headquarters tell the story of a government that put souvenir sales ahead of substance,” Dr Chalmers says.

2020 TA Large Forestry Holding Deemed Carrying on a Business A decision impact statement in response to the AAT ruling in SWPD and FCT was issued by the ATO. In the case, the taxpayer was held to have carried on a “forestry business” by holding onto a property with forests of native trees in it. Qld COVID-19 Package For State Taxes The Queensland state government has released payroll and land tax relief for local businesses to combat the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The payroll tax relief includes refunds and deferrals. For the income year 2020/21, businesses who have employees in Queensland and who pay $6.5m or less in Australian taxable wages will be eligible for a refund of two months’ payroll tax (July and August 2020). An additional deferral of payroll tax applies for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year. Employers of

Victoria COVID-19 Package For State Taxes At the top of the Victorian economic stimulus package is a refund of payroll tax for small business. Residency issues due to COVID-19 The ATO has issued guidelines on the treatment of Australian residents and non-residents who have been affected by the effects of COVID-19 pandemic. As there have been travel restrictions both in Australia and overseas, affected non-resident Australians will have to consider their tax residency and obligations carefully. Non-resident Australians who have to prolong their stay in Australia, while not generally be considered Australian residents for tax purposes, will have different treatment granted to them, depending on their individual circumstances.

AX UPDATES Active Asset Test Passed For “Vacant” Land Used As Storage Appeals note: The decision in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal was in favour of the taxpayer, allowing the use of the small business CGT concessions. The event was subsequently updated in January 2020 when the original decision was overturned by the Federal Court. In September 2020, the Full Federal Court then overturned the single judge decision, meaning the taxpayer once again may use the small business CGT concessions. The Full Federal Court advised that small business relief should be applied beneficially rather than restrictively for a taxpayer. At the time of writing, we are unable to determine whether the Commissioner of Taxation will appeal to the High Court of Australia. Current decision in case: Land adjacent to taxpayer’s main residence was used in the taxpayer’s small business, and therefore passes the active asset test. Editor’s note: The overview below and client impact statement were originally preserved as written for the January 2020 update. This allowed users to have full visibility of the arguments and opportunities which were subsequently overturned. In this instance, the overview and client impact statement have been amended to take into consideration various issues identified by the Full Federal Court, and how they may

Updated: 25-Sep-2020

Residential land has been determined to be an active asset as it stored materials and tools for a taxpayer’s business. The ruling from the Full Federal Court is in line with an earlier decision by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and has overturned the decision from a single judge appeal. This case is one of many which straddles the fence on whether unimproved land qualifies for as an active asset. In this case, the Full Federal Court concluded that the small business CGT concessions should be looked at beneficially for taxpayers, as is intended from the original legislation. The outcome of this case relies on the interpretation of “used in the course of carrying on a business” which is necessary for determining an active asset. The Full Federal Court has interpreted that this sentence does not use or imply restrictive language such as “ordinary course of a business” or “day to day running of a business”.

NT COVID-19 Stimulus Package The NT Government has introduced an economic stimulus package that focuses on providing payroll tax relief and grants for businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be payroll tax and land tax relief as part of the package. For the payroll tax relief, the State will provide for a 9-month waiver of payroll tax, up to December 2020, for all businesses with Australian grouped wages up to $4m. Protect yourself this pollen season and reduce risk of thunderstom asthma

Victoria’s grass pollen season runs from 1 October to 31 December, bringing an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms and the chance of ‘thunderstorm asthma’. Thunderstorm asthma is triggered by a unique combination of high pollen levels in the air and certain thunderstorm conditions. Even people who have never had asthma before can be affected. It can occur when pollen grains are drawn up into the clouds as thunderstorms form. The pollen grains absorb water, swell and burst open. Tiny particles containing pollen allergens are released and can be drawn into the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. People with current, past or undiagnosed asthma, suffer seasonal hay fever or are allergic to ryegrass pollen could be at risk of an asthmatic reaction caused by thunderstorm asthma. Having both asthma and hay fever or poorly controlled asthma increases the risk even further. Hay fever or asthma can produce symptoms similar to coronavirus such as a runny nose, cough or shortness of breath. Anyone who develops these symptoms over the season is urged to get tested for COVID-19. For people with asthma or hay fever,

especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life-threatening. Melbourne experienced the world’s largest epidemic thunderstorm asthma event on 21 November 2016, which resulted in nine deaths and thousands of people presenting to Victorian public hospital emergency departments with breathing difficulties in a short period of time. Those at increased risk should: • •

avoid being outside during thunderstorms, especially in wind gusts that come before the storm. have an asthma reliever/preventer medication appropriately available (as discussed with your doctor or pharmacist) follow their asthma action plan and have practical knowledge of the four steps of asthma first aid.

If you have hay fever, see your pharmacist or doctor for a hay fever treatment plan and check whether you need an asthma reliever puffer – which is available from a pharmacy without a prescription. Victoria’s thunderstorm asthma warning system is available on the VicEmergency app and website and will remain in place until the end of December.

The website and app provide forecasts, information and alerts about potential thunderstorm asthma conditions using a traffic light scale of: green for low, orange for moderate, and red for high. Pollen count expected to be high – says leading allergy expert, Prof. Jo Douglass Professor Jo Douglass, one of Australia’s leading allergy experts from The Royal Melbourne Hospital and University of Melbourne says it is critical that anyone suffering from hay fever or asthma to start taking preventers now, with the pollen count expected to be high following a relatively wet end to winter. “Research shows that thunderstorm asthma events happen every five to seven years, so we are owed one and it will come, so we want to keep people safe particularly as we navigate through this (COVID-19) pandemic and the best way to stay safe is to take your preventers,” Professor Douglass said. “You can get the Melbourne Pollen app, which is linked to the emergency services, which will warn you if there is any expected thunderstorm events, and if so, my advice is to stay inside with the windows closed and be sure to keep your prevention medication nearby,” she said.

Council News NOVEMBER 2020

ONLINE BOOKINGS AND INFORMATION ON KEEPING UP TO DATE WITH CHILDHOOD IMMUNISATION Parents are being reminded of the importance of keeping their child’s vaccinations up to date to protect them against infectious diseases during their vulnerable years of life. Council is continuing to operate its immunisation service to ensure the community is protected from vaccine preventable diseases, while working within the confines of COVID-19 health and safety measures. Families in Maroondah can access vaccines at no cost to protect babies and children against infectious diseases as part of the National Immunisation Program (NIP). Immunisation sessions cover the immunisation schedule for babies and children aged between six weeks and four years, as well as for adolescents and adults. Victorian Government legislation (No Jab, No Play) requires all children to be fully vaccinated to be enrolled for childcare and kindergarten, unless they have a medical exemption. Immunisation is the best defence against the return of highly contagious diseases such as polio, rubella and whooping cough, which has shown a resurgence in recent years. Until Saturday 31 October, all Council immunisation sessions will be held at: • • •

Karralyka, Mines Road, Ringwood East Croydon Senior Citizens Club, corner Mount Dandenong Road and Civic Square, Croydon Maroondah Federation Estate

To attend a session, you must book an appointment online for the venue of your choice. Appointment times have also been extended to ensure appropriate social distancing is maintained between attendees. Council’s immunisation service has a full Quality Systems accreditation in compliance with AS/NZS iSO 9001. Families can feel confident attending Council’s immunisation sessions

during the COVID-19 pandemic, with all appropriate safety processes and measures in place including social distancing, additional disinfecting between clients, and hand hygiene and temperature checks upon entry. Before arriving at a Council immunisation session, residents are advised to follow an important health safety checklist.

Latest immunisation rates for Maroondah Latest figures from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register shows 96.04 per cent of one-year-olds (1215 months) in Maroondah are fully immunised, with vaccination rates higher than the previous year (94.83%), and above the current state (94.94%) and national (94.60%) averages. (Figures 1 July 2019 - 30 June 2020).

Families delaying important routine vaccinations The latest findings from The Royal Children’s Hospital National Health Poll has found that families are putting off important routine childhood immunisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The RCH National Child Health Poll revealed that of the more than 2000 Australian parents of 3500 children surveyed, one in five children aged under five had a routine vaccine delayed since the start of the pandemic in March. Poll Director and paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital Dr Anthea Rhodes said that keeping up to date with vaccinations is essential, even during the pandemic.

Maroondah immunisation rates for children aged two years (24-27 months) are also higher than the national average (91.68%) at 91.95 per cent, but slightly lower than the state average (92.28%). The figure is also down on the previous year, 92.58 per cent from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019.

“For most parents, we found that concerns about their child or themselves catching COVID-19 at a health service are driving their choice to delay scheduled vaccinations. The day-to-day stresses families have faced through this challenging time has also been a factor, with a quarter putting off appointments because they had too much else to worry about,” Dr Rhodes said in a statement.

Children aged five years (60-63 months) also had a higher coverage rate in Maroondah, at 95.86 per cent, when compared to both the state (95.75%) and national (94.77%) averages, however, was down on the previous year’s 96.54 per cent.

Dr Rhodes said it was important for parents to realise that if vaccinations were not kept up to date, children would be at risk of contracting diseases such as whooping cough, measles and chickenpox when they returned to school and child care. NOVEMBER 2020 | FIND MAROONDAH
