About the Find Casey By Warren Strybosch

The Find Casey is a community paper that aims to support all things Casey. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Casey for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findcaseyshire) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Casey Team.

Novavax to roll out from late February Alex Mitchell (Australian Associated Press)

Novavax vaccines will be rolled out from February 21, becoming the fourth type of COVID-19 jab available in Australia. Health Minister Greg Hunt said the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation had given the new COVID-19 vaccine the green light. Novavax, which will be available for those aged 18 and older, will be a twodose course with a minimum three-week gap between first and second doses. Mr Hunt said Australia would now receive its first shipment of the vaccine and the Therapeutic Goods Administration would go through a detailed batch testing process. Presuming the regulator deems it safe, it will then be rolled out. He said the protein-based vaccine expanded Australia’s COVID coverage, with 51 million doses having been purchased.

“For some who may have had contraindications or reactions with regards to other vaccines, this will provide an additional opportunity for them, as well as those who for whatever reason have not taken up the program so far,” he said. “But I do want to encourage everyone, unless there’s a contraindication, please continue to come forward and take the existing vaccines.” ATAGI says the vaccine can be taken by those who have had COVID-19, while severely immunocompromised people should take three doses. It can also be taken by pregnant and breastfeeding women. It also has noted Novavax to be “highly effective” in preventing symptomatic COVID in adults.

warned practices needed extra support. “We are under enormous pressure … GPs and their teams will carry on and get as many doses into arms as possible, but we need more help and that needs to happen right now,” president Karen Price said. “GPs are still reporting doses not arriving on time or insufficient stock being delivered. Practices are also struggling to absorb the cost of taking part in the rollout.” Dr Price, who noted practices were given an additional $10 per booster shot since late last year, called for greater assistance now given “the scale of the task has only grown”. She said additional funding could see more after-hours and weekend vaccinations.

Back to School By Warren Strybosch

We, at the Find Geelong, would like to wish all the 2022 children, who are attending school this year, all the best in their endeavours and we hope you have a wonderful year learning and building relationships with your peers.

Our thoughts especially to those school children who must wear masks and take regular RAT’s. To those parents who must administer the RAT’s and help their children remember their masks, on top of everything else you will have to do

this year…we feel for you.

Jobless rate may drop below 4 pct soon

“It could happen very, very quickly because of the amount of effort we are putting into training Australians,” Mr Robert told ABC radio on Wednesday.

“This is the second highest taxing government, next to the Howard government, which we have seen since the Second World War.”

“This is something we very committed to because it just changes lives. We are seeing a generation of skills coming through that we haven’t seen for a long, long time.”

Dr Lowe will address the National Press Club in Sydney later on Wednesday where he will get the opportunity to explain his thinking on the outlook for interest rates.

Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe has a similar view for the jobless rate, falling below four per cent this year and being around 3.75 per cent by the end of 2023.

The governor stuck to the line of being “patient” before lifting the cash rate from a record low 0.1 per cent in his statement following Tuesday’s first board meeting of the year.

Deputy Opposition Leader Richard Marles said low unemployment is obviously “a good thing”.

Financial markets, which are pricing in the risk of a rate hike by mid-year, had been expecting something more definite in its guidance following the recent drop in the unemployment rate and a surge in inflation pressures.

Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics and Business Correspondent

(Australian Associated Press)

Scott Morrison wants to see the unemployment rate below four per cent in the second half of this year, but Employment Minister Stuart Robert says it could come sooner. As of December the jobless rate already stood at 13-year low of 4.2 per cent. The prime minister, just months out from a federal election, told the National Press Club on Tuesday an unemployment rate with a “three” in front was achievable – a level not seen in over 50 years.

“But there is still considerable underemployment in Australia today, a lot of people who are working but want to have more work,” he told Sky News. He also scoffed at the idea that the Morrison government could win the election based on its economic management “This is a government which has racked up more than a trillion dollars of debt and there is very little to show for it,” he said.

If anyone has any encouraging stories about their children’s school experience this year, please send them through to editor@findgeelong.com.au.

The RBA did announce the end of its multi-billion dollar bond buying program as economists had expected, which had aimed to keep market interest rates and borrowing costs low. “Ceasing purchases under the bond purchase program does not imply a near-term increase in interest rates,” Dr Lowe said.

Free RAT for DVA and Concession Card holders but should it be free for others as well? By Warren Strybosch

FEBRUARY 2022 | FIND CASEY

5

Only DVA Gold and White Card holders, Health Care Card holders, and other concession card holders can obtain Free Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits. Chemists must prepay for the RAT kits and then on sell them to their customers. For DVA and Concession Card Holders, you can walk into a pharmacy, show your concession card, and receive up to five RATs for free which are being subsidised by Medicare. Thankfully, this option is available to concession card holders given many would struggle to come up with the required $75 needed to obtain the five tests. Whilst concession card holders are now able to obtain the RATs, many casual workers feel they should also be receiving free RAT kits. Casual workers have suggested that every person should receive at least two free kits under the Medicare system. Regardless, of who is getting them for free or not, there is still a shortage of RAT kits for Victorians. Interestingly, the Victorian Government has decided to give free RAT kits to every child attending school this year, however, it is not compulsory to take the RAT even if symptoms are presenting. It is hard to believe that every parent is going to administer these tests to their children even when there are no symptoms showing.

M ark Mfiftafffi

Whilst some workers are struggling to get their hands on a RAT kit, there is likely to be many school families stockpiling their RAT kits for a future event e.g., when they or someone in their family needs to take one so they can get back to work. With shortages or RATs still occurring it is also likely that some school parents will see this as an opportunity to make a few quick dollars by on selling their kits to those in need. Hopefully, we will see a decline in the use of RATs as the year progresses but that does seem a long way away as we see continue to see increased hospitalisations and more and more people getting sick from Covid.

High Income Earners – Beware of One-off Income Earning Events ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

sector funds are not included as low tax contributions as these amounts don’t count towards a client’s concessional cap.

If you are a high-income earner, especially someone who is now earning close to $250,000 this financial year, you need to understand how Division 293 applies so you do not get a surprise at tax time.

Payment process After a client submits their tax return and the super funds have reported all contributions for the year, the ATO will determine if a Division 293 tax liability has arisen. The client has a choice of:

Division 293 tax is the additional 15% tax on concessional contributions for high income earners. The tax applies when a client’s combined income and nonexcessive concessional contributions for the year are greater than $250,000.

• •

One-off events can result in clients having to pay Division 293 tax when normally their annual income is well below the $250,000 threshold.

paying the tax liability personally, or having the tax deducted from their super fund (via a release authority provided by the ATO).

To make this choice, the client can complete an election form on myGov. If this election is not made within the 60day timeframe provided, the ATO will issue a release authority directly to the super fund for payment.

Division 293 income definition

Important note:

The definition of ‘income’ used for Division 293 provisions is the total of:

It is not the responsibility of the employer or the receiving super fund to deduct this additional 15% tax on concessional contributions. The onus to meet this liability is on the client.

• • • •

taxable income (excluding any FHSSS* released amount and any assessable super lump sum benefits where the low-rate cap applies for those under 60) amounts subject to family trust distribution tax reportable fringe benefits total net investment losses low tax contributions * First Home Super Saver Scheme

What are low tax contributions? Low tax contributions generally refer to all concessional contributions made in a year less any excess concessional contributions (as the excess amount is already picked up as part of taxable income). Concessional contributions made to defined benefit schemes (both taxed and untaxed funds) and amounts allocated from reserves to the extent that they count towards the client’s concessional cap, may also be included as low tax contributions although the contributions are modified for defined benefit interests, State higher level office holders and Commonwealth justices and judges. Transfers from foreign superannuation funds that are taxed in the receiving fund and rollovers of taxable component (untaxed element) from untaxed public

Trap - beware of one-off events Income (for Division 293 purposes) can increase suddenly in a particular financial year due to a one-off event resulting in an additional 15% tax on nonexcessive concessional contributions made in that year including concessional contributions made using the carry forward of unused cap rules. Some of the common events that can arise to dramatically increase taxable

income and therefore the requirement to pay Division 293 tax include: •

• •

Employment termination payments and leave entitlements that are added to taxable income as a result of redundancy (ie the amount over the tax free portion). The sale of an asset resulting in a capital gain. Receiving a taxable super death benefit as a non-dependent beneficiary (eg adult child). Example: Rory is 50 years of age with a salary of $200,000 p.a. In the 2021-22 year, he plans to maximise his concessional contributions and will contribute $27,500. His father Jon has an account-based pension valued at $300,000 (all taxable component) and Rory is the sole beneficiary under a binding nomination. In January 2022, Jon dies, and Rory receives the death benefit resulting in taxable income for the year of $500,000 (noting that the maximum tax rate that will apply to the $300,000 death benefit is 15% plus Medicare). As Rory’s income exceeds $250,000 for 2021-22, he will receive (possibly unexpectedly) a Division 293 tax liability notice from the ATO for $4,125 ($27,500 x 15%).

Cyber : Increase your insurability.

GENERAL INSURANCE By Craig Anderson

Insurers will look for some key indicators when deciding to offer cover, or if declining to quote to insure your business. One question they will definitely ask is whether there have been any claims, or if there are any known circumstances which may lead to a claim. The answer gives underwriters a clear indication as to whether you are a good risk or not, and this will likely affect their willingness to insure. If you have not suffered a loss, this may still occur, so insurers will ask a lot more questions to gauge their exposure to losses due to activities you undertake, or deficiencies within the business. One area of cover where we are all exposed to risk but few of us are really prepared for is Cyber. As more than 50% of small businesses will fail within 6 months of a cyber-attack this is an area where being prepared, and insured, is of critical importance. “Cyber insurance helps safeguard your business against online risks such as

accidental data breaches, business interruption, computer hacking, ransomware, IT repair solutions, legal claims and remediating any losses suffered by your customers or clients. A cyber-attack or data breach may cost your business more than just money; it could cause damage to the reputation of your company and put your customers’ personal details at risk” (FTA Insurance). So how do you get your business to the point where an insurer will offer cover? Before any claims occur, there are things than can be done to make your business resilient, and more desirable to insure from an underwriter’s perspective. Identifying and removing weaknesses in cyber security, internal encryption and storage of files, and staff training, needs to be undertaken. The most efficient way to achieve this is to engage an IT Consultant who is ISO27001:2013 accredited to audit your whole IT system, who will find and fix the problems. (ISO 27001:2013 is the International Information Security Standard) The consultant will be able to

put in place the necessary changes, which will protect the business from preventable losses, and reputational damage. When the process is completed, you will be considered by insurers to be a good risk. However as we know from experience, there is still a good chance the insurance will be “worth its weight in gold”, in the not too distant future. For a “health check” of your business insurance, contact Small Business Insurance Brokers via email sales@ smallbusinessinsurancebrokers.com.au Any advice in this article has been prepared without taking into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. ATO draft effective life for e-bikes and e-scooters By Warren Strybosch

The ATO has issued a draft effective life proposal for e-bicycles and e-scooters. It suggests a five year effective life for bikes and two years for the scooters. Comments are due by 25 February 2022.

PM implores Australians to look forward Dominic Giannini

(Australian Associated Press)

The prime minister has apologised to Australians for being “too optimistic” over the summer as he made a pre-election pitch focused on low taxes, jobs and national security.

Criticisms the government acted too slow or failed to plan ahead were blamed on game-changing COVID variants that “write their own rules” and the changing health advice in response.

Scott Morrison used a speech to the National Press Club on Tuesday to issue the mea culpa, admitting mistakes were made during the pandemic, but stopped short of directly saying sorry for the government’s response.

“Now I’ll take my fair share of the criticism and the blame. I haven’t got everything right … there’s been no guidebook, and you have to make decisions in real time,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Morrison said if he had his time again he would have put the vaccine rollout under a military operation from the start and better managed the transition of aged care residents into hospitals with the states.

“You must accept that you may lose a few battles along the way and when the setbacks occur you must keep moving forward – you can’t dwell on things that didn’t play out.”

“I don’t think (Australians) expect perfection. But they do expect you to keep working it every single day and that’s something I’m very proud my government has done,” he said.

Mr Morrison implored Australians to look forward, pledging an unemployment rate with a “three in front of it” by the end of the year and more job creation.

The prime minister also used the address to announce a $1.6 billion boost to the country’s research sector with the Australia’s Economic Accelerator program seeking to turn early-stage research ideas into commercial successes.

Mr Morrison tried to frame the upcoming election – due by May – within the scope of a strong economy, telling voters the poll shouldn’t be a referendum on the government’s handling of the pandemic. “We’re all terribly sorry for what this pandemic has done to the world and to this country. These are the times in which we live,” he said. “As we went into the summer … I think we were too optimistic and we could’ve communicated more clearly about the risks and challenges that we still faced.” Mr Morrison sought to mitigate some of the public furore his government has faced over the vaccine rollout, aged care and access to rapid antigen tests.

“This isn’t a referendum on the government. This is a choice about who’s going to lead the government after the election,” he said. Asked about the current price of milk and bread, Mr Morrison said: “I’m not going to pretend to you that I go out each day and I buy a loaf of bread and I buy a litre of milk.”

“But the point is, I do my job every day, to ensure that those things are as affordable as they possibly can be for Australians every single day.”

It will form part of a $2.2 billion plan to enhance Australian research, which also includes an expansion of a CSIRO initiative backing start-up companies and investing in 1800 industry-focused PhDs. As well, two payments of up to $400 will be made available to aged care staff over the coming months. FEBRUARY 2022 | FIND CASEY

Mastitis... Help!

Photo credit: Flávia Gaga, via Unsplash

LACTATION CONSULTANT By Dr. Joanna Strybosch

What is it? Mastitis is a common inflammatory condition affecting the breast tissue. It is estimated that one in four breastfeeding women experience mastitis at some point in time, most commonly in their first 26 weeks postpartum. It usually presents with a red, tender, hot and/or swollen area of the breast and flu like symptoms such as fever, aches and chills. It can vary in severity from mild through to a more severe condition. It is possible to develop mastitis more than once in the same lactation as well as in subsequent lactations. What causes it? The most common form of mastitis is acute lactational mastitis (ALM). Sometimes there is an infectious agent - most frequently staphylococcus aureus. However often there is no clear infectious pathogen involved. In these cases, the most common cause is inflammation due to milk stasis. When there is inadequate milk removal from the breast, milk builds up within a lobe of the breast causing inflammation and the characteristic intense local pain of mastitis. Acute lactational mastitis has a sudden onset of symptoms and usually runs a short course. The known risk factors for mastitis are the wearing of a tight bra, previous mastitis, no breastfeeding support, long times between feeds, hyperlactation, use of nipple shields and quick weaning. These situations lead to milk stasis and/or inadequate milk removal. In addition, nipple wounds are a risk factor for staph aureus infections. How do I manage it? The first step in the management of ALM is to keep the breasts as empty as possible. This means breastfeeding more often and making sure that baby is properly positioned and latched for effective milk removal. If baby is unwilling or unable to feed, milk removal must be done through hand expression or use of a breast pump.

Mastitis can be an extremely painful condition. Mothers need to be cared for and supported to continue breastfeeding while recovering from mastitis so as to not prematurely wean. They need lots of rest, which is vital for a quick recovery. They also need to remain well hydrated and to eat well. The use of cold compresseson the affected breast can be soothing as well as short periods of warmth on the breast just before feeding in order to help the milk flow. Practically, mums need help with their baby and any other siblings as well as help around the home, in order to allow her to have adequate rest. What if it doesn’t go away? If symptoms do not resolve within 12 to 24 hours or if the mother is feeling very unwell she should continue with the above measures and seek medical treatment. In these cases, antibiotics will be required. After commencing antibiotic treatment usually the symptoms of fever and chills disappear within 12 hours, although the pain, redness and breast lump will take longer to resolve. If symptoms do not improve within 48 hours see your doctor again for further help. ALM can lead to a breast abscess if not managed correctly or treated adequately.

Does it affect my milk? During mastitis, a mother’s milk will taste more salty but it is perfectly safe for her baby to drink. Putting her baby to the breast frequently is usually the most effective way to remove milk from the breast and resolve mastitis and should always be encouraged. What else can I do? Recent studies have shown that the risk of developing lactational mastitis is significantly reduced by the daily consumption of fermented foods and drinks, including kefir and boza, homemade and conventional yoghurts and pickles. Consuming a diversity of these foods was also found to be protective. In contrast, the consumption of probiotic supplements for the management of mastitis is unproven. See your lactation consultant or GP for further advice.

RBA to Stay Patient Before Lifting Rates Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics and Business Correspondent (Australian Associated Press)

Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe does not expect the Omicron variant to derail Australia’s economic recovery but says the central bank board is prepared to remain patient before lifting the cash rate. As widely expected by economists at the RBA’s first board meeting of the year, it left the cash rate at a record low 0.1 per cent and is ending its multi-billion dollar bond buying program on February 10. The program aimed to keep market interest rates and borrowing costs low. “Ceasing purchases under the bond purchase program does not imply a near-term increase in interest rates,” RBA governor Philip Lowe said in a statement after the meeting. “The board is prepared to be patient as it monitors how the various factors affecting inflation in Australia evolve.” Economists and financial markets had expected Dr Lowe to provide a more definite outlook for the cash rate after the unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 per cent, a year earlier than the RBA had been predicting, while inflation is also running well ahead of its expectations. Financial markets have been pricing in the risk of a rise in the cash rate by mid-year, while economists had been gravitating towards a move at the August board meeting.

“As the board has stated previously, it will not increase the cash rate until actual inflation is sustainably within the two to three per cent target range,” Dr Lowe said. He said while inflation has picked up, it is too early to conclude that it is sustainably within the target band. “There are uncertainties about how persistent the pick-up in inflation will be as supply-side problems are resolved,” he said. “Wages growth also remains modest and it is likely to be some time yet before aggregate wages growth is at a rate consistent with inflation being sustainably at target.” EY chief economist Jo Masters said the RBA board remains a long way from financial market expectations about the timing of the first rate. “It’s clear that policymakers want to see wages growth accelerate to be confident that inflation will remain within the target band, as supply disruptions fade,” she said. Key December quarter wages data is due on February 23. Dr Lowe said the Australian economy remains resilient and spending is expected to pick up as Omicron case numbers trend lower, but he conceded the main source of uncertainty continues to be the pandemic.

The RBA now expects economic growth of around 4.25 per cent over 2022 and two per cent over 2023. This is lower than the RBA’s central case predicted in November when it had forecast growth of 5.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively. However, it has upgraded its annual underlying inflation forecasts after the unexpected jump to 2.6 per cent as of the December quarter, predicting 3.25 per cent in coming months before declining to around 2.75 per cent over 2023. The central bank had previous not expected underlying inflation to hit 2.5 per cent until the end of 2023. “One source of uncertainty is the persistence of the disruptions to supply chains and distribution networks and their ongoing effects on prices,” Dr Lowe said. “It is also uncertain how consumption patterns will evolve and how this will affect the balance of supply and demand, and hence prices.” Dr Lowe will get the opportunity to flesh out his expectations for the outlook when he addresses the National Press Club in Sydney on Wednesday. The RBA will also release its quarterly statement on monetary policy on Friday which will provide its full suite of forecasts.

This food-based event will showcase the heritage of Casey’s food culture and the best produce in the region and will be open to groups and organisations in the community who would like to present events and activities that tie into the themes of Casey Cornucopia. We encourage local artists, choirs, theatre groups, dance troupes, community groups and venues to add their performance, activity or event to the festival program and help us light up winter with creative inspiration. Applications are open until Tuesday 8 March 2022.

6 March is Clean Up Australia Day

On Sunday 6 March, Casey residents are encouraged to join in with thousands of other Australians for the country’s largest community-based environmental event Clean Up Australia Day. Residents can choose to join one of the many registered groups at sites across Casey helping to remove rubbish from waterways, parks and community spaces, or register your own local site. While litter is an ongoing issue in the community, the pandemic has led to a

significant surge in single-use plastics and unprecedented numbers of face masks, takeaway coffee cups and food packaging littering local footpaths, parks and beaches, with more rubbish entering our environment by the day. With local communities right across the country joining in, residents can make a real difference in their own neighbourhoods that will also have flowon benefits for the broader environment and wildlife far beyond Casey.

Registered sites all receive clean-up kits from Clean Up Australia to help ensure the health and safety of volunteers and the community. Local schools and businesses are also encouraged to hold their own events with a special Business Clean Up Day running on Tuesday 1 March and a Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 4 March. ouncil News State Government contributes to four key Casey projects

This week the City of Casey has welcomed more than $3.2 million in funding as part of the Victorian Government’s 2021-22 Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF), to support four key community projects at Myuna Farm, Ray Bastin Reserve, Tooradin Public Hall and Gwendoline Children’s Centre. City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff PSM and City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson were joined by Minister Shaun Leane, Minister Gabrielle Williams, Gary Mass MP and Luke Donnellan MP at Myuna Farm on Wednesday to share in the announcement. As one of Victoria’s fastest-growing municipalities Ms Duff has welcomed the funding acknowledging how beneficial the projects will be for the community. “These projects will make a significant difference to many people in the community and our future generations who stand to benefit from these muchneeded upgrades,” said Ms Duff. Myuna Farm, Doveton, Pavilion improvements $351,105 (GSF grant) Myuna Farm’s Pavilion will be upgraded to provide access for all abilities. This will allow all our community, including people living with disability, access to improved amenities, a spectator viewing area, and a meeting space. Ray Bastin Reserve, Narre Warren, redevelopment $1.6 million (GSF grant), $1.495 million (Council)

To ensure the reserve can continue to meet the needs of Casey’s growing community, many aspects of the reserve are due to be replaced or revitalised. Feedback captured from children, young people and their families helped influence the playground redevelopment with new play elements focusing on adventure, sensory and nature play, including a flying fox and swings, and the replacement of the liberty swing with alternate all-abilities play equipment. In collaboration with Casey’s Aboriginal community, connection to country and culture through native vegetation, storytelling, play and exploration areas will also be integrated into the redevelopment. Tooradin Public Hall upgrade $350,000 (GSF grant), $350,000 (Council) The Tooradin Public Hall will be upgraded to improve accessibility of the facility to ensure it meets the needs of the current and future community. Community halls are incredibly important meeting places for the community and provide a space to gather, socialise and connect. The upgrade respects the heritage of the hall while providing amenities and access for everyone. Gwendoline Children’s Centre, Berwick, upgrade $926,000 (GSF grant), $850,030 (Council) To address Berwick’s growing needs for services and programs, the Gwendoline Children’s Centre will be upgraded to

better support the delivery of essential l services including Kindergarten, Maternal and Child Health and community meeting spaces. City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson said the upcoming projects are important Council assets upon which local communities rely. “These projects demonstrate Council’s commitment to advocating on behalf of the community to ensure that residents have access to facilities and spaces that help them form strong local connections and build a sense of community,” said Mr Patterson. “We thank the Victorian Government for its investment into these important community assets and we look forward to working in partnership to deliver these projects for our community.” Myuna Farm Pavilion’s construction will commence later this year, while construction at Ray Bastin Reserve will commence in January 2023. Designs for Tooradin Public Hall upgrades will commence later this year and construction will start in 2023. Gwendoline Children’s Centre upgrade will commence by late 2022, with works expected to be completed by mid 2023.

SETTING

NEW LIFE

COORDINATES

RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly MBA

As we transition from one age into another, that’s precisely the time when we should look back on our life, and set new coordinates to enable us to navigate our future birthdays. It doesn’t have to be something that you want to tell the neighbours about – such as becoming a gray nomad for the next twelve months, and would they keep an eye on the unit for us? – but something more personal can be equally satisfying and achievable – like deciding to find, for the next month, a different meal every evening, on YouTube. And indeed, for a novice starting to discover totally new recipes, you can’t do better than David Herbert’s divine “Classic Bolognese Sauce”. Setting new retirement co-ordinates is to start to move out of boredom, and towards fear. And obviously, the rules are (1) small steps are best and (2) don’t ask for permission.

POCKETS PRO SERIES 2022 ‘Pockets’ located on Mickleham Road, Tullamarine A sports bar, weekend night club, dance floor, weekly pool comp location and the venue that has just hosted Australia’s First and Biggest Major Professional Pool Series in History, with 8 professionals playing for a Prize Pool of $126,000.. This is the most prize money these 8 individuals have ever played for. The structure & format is an 8- man Single Elimination, played on Supreme Tables using International Rules. The new ruleset on new tables gives everything a new fresh feel, with these rules comes a more fast attacking game although defensive as well. This keeps viewers tuned in. The Pockets Sports team have been working extremely hard over the last 12 months to ensure this event will set the standard for Pool in Australia, taking it to newer and higher levels in terms of professionalising and expanding the sport.. Tournament Director Arthur Titus confidently says “the Pockets Pro Series 2022 will be the biggest event in Australian history, not only because of the Top 8 best players or the prize money, but because of the incorporation of the entertainment factor as well as a professional feel from the lights, cameras and commentary, etc” -

On the 30th/31st of January this statement read true as thousands tuned in world wide to watch series 1 & 2 both on the online streams and by purchasing tickets to enter the venue...

There has never been a better time to be playing 8 ball pool, let alone Pool in general as seen overseas with companies like the Ultimate Pool Group and Matchroom Pool leading the charge to a new era of Cue Sports. POCKETS Pro Series Championships 1 & 2 did not disappoint.. bringing with it opening speeches, dancers, singers, national anthems, drummers/ marching bands, dj’s, lots of Pool, a great atmosphere, thrilling matches and nail biting intense tie breakers.. Event 1 - Michael Scerri and Steve Woods both starting the series off on the right foot securing their spot in the first PRO series

final and giving everyone a match of a lifetime to remember.. a race to 7, Michael on 4 and Steve missing the black on 6 that could of secured him the win.. Michael didn’t give up without a fight, only minutes left on clock, he takes the score to back to 6 -5, leaving him only 30 seconds to run the rack to secure the tie, taking it to a 6 red shoot out... with only 1 second difference deciding the final winner... Steve Woods took home the $7000 and the first PRO series trophy..
