About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch
The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

ASIC - Influencers Providing Money Advice Have Been Warned By Warren Strybosch
Who do you get your money or finance advice from? For many people they rely on their friends and family. For others, it is their professional advisor. In the past their professional advisor was the accountant but now that accountants can longer provide financial advice anymore, more people are turning to licenced financial planners. However, there is a growing number of people who do not seek professional advice but rather put their faith and trust into financial influencers or ‘fin-influencers’.
recommendation that someone should or should not invest in a product or a class of products, then this may be a breach of law. “If you’re an influencer who receives benefits or payment for your comments in relation to financial products, you’re more likely to be providing financial product advice because it indicates an intention to influence the audience,” the information sheet warned.
Source: ARdata consumer survey 2022 With a recent survey conducted by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), they found that over 33 cent of 18 to 21 year-olds are following someone a fin influencer on social media to obtain money advice. ASIC has become concerned about these influencers that they have released a paper INFO 269 warning social media influencers of the substantial risks and penalties they face if they promote financial products and services online. The information sheet warns that anyone discussing financial products and services online or promoting affiliate links must understand their legal obligations, including whether they are providing financial product advice or arranging for followers to deal in a financial product. “Make sure your content is accurate and balanced. If your online post is misleading, you may be breaking the law.” ASIC stated that influencers can share factual information but if that information is presented in a way that conveys a
ASIC commissioner Cathie Armour said the way investors access information is changing. “It is crucial that influencers who discuss financial products and services online comply with the financial services laws. If they don’t, they risk substantial penalties and put investors at risk,” said Ms Armour. “ASIC monitors select online financial discussion by influencers who feature or promote financial products for misleading or deceptive representations or unlicensed advice or dealing. If we see harm occurring, we will take action to enforce the law.” Dr Angel Zhong – who is a senior lecturer in finance in the school of economics, finance and marketing at RMIT University - applauded the move by ASIC, after recent research by the university found that financial information consumed online influenced investment decisions. “Unverified investment advice is no different to fake news, which is frequently flagged by social media platforms that urge viewers to read with caution,” Dr Zhong said.
“Newbie investors are particularly susceptible to receiving dodgy financial advice, as the internet replaces traditional outlets like accredited financial advisers. As one of Australia’s most popular fin influencers, better known as the Bare Foot Investor, we emailed Mr Scott Pape, seeking his response to INFO 269. We asked him to comment on his audio books which direct clients to use certain industry funds and personal insurances within those industry funds. Lastly, we asked him if he would be making it clear that he is no longer able to provide financial planning advice since giving up is Australian Financial Services Licence back in 2020. As of writing this article, we have had no response from Mr Pape. As a side note, we acknowledge that the financial planning world has changed a lot over the past few years, and it is hard to keep abreast of these changes. We would encourage Scott to review his material in his books before releasing the next edition. For instance, he may not be aware that most industry fund insurers have changed their Total and Permanent Disability terms about five years ago and now have made it very hard for anyone to get a claim paid under their ‘any’ occupation definition. Also, professionals should consider an ‘own’ occupation definition which cannot be offered by industry funds. Pricing is another factor. Often it is cheaper in the long term to take up personal insurances with a retail insurer whilst still paying the premiums from their industry fund as a rollover. Given industry funds don’t offer level premiums, for young people, having a level premium policy can save them thousands of dollars in the long term compared to stepped policies. Whilst Financial Services Minister Jane Hume last year compared the influencers to “taxi drivers…giving stock tips”, ASIC has taken a dimmer view. Last month, the corporate watchdog updated its guidance and warned unlicensed influencers could face up to five years in prison or significant fines for breaking financial services laws. ASIC, in the past, have made bold statements and often their bark has been bigger than their bite. It will be interesting to see if ASIC will follow up on INFO 269 as undoubtedly, fin influencers, will continue to provide comments that may be construed as providing ‘money’ advice that they consider is not always in the best interest of consumers.

Influencers in Firing Line – this time with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) By Warren Strybosch
Many people want to become an influencer because of the money they can bring in from incentivised testimonials promoting health care products and the like.
can be seen holding a product but cannot comment on it or provide a personal testimonial anywhere; be it their own websites, print material, and social media.
However, the TGA have made revisions to the Code which specifically deals with social media influencers. The new rules prohibit paid or incentivised testimonials by influencers in relation to any and all health products within Australia.
According to the TGA, this step will result in greater transparency regarding product reviews and suggestions on social media. Testimonials can be overly persuasive to a sensitive audience looking for products to help with their health and, in some cases, really significant health concerns. The new Code assures that endorsements are as neutral as feasible and are not swayed by business interests or personal benefit.
The TGA have stated that influences can no longer be paid for posts related to sunscreen, protein powder, vitamins, supplements, medicines, skin-lightening products, and ‘acne skincare.’ Many people believe the ban or restrictions placed on influencers, be in influencers providing ‘money’ advice (read our other article in this month’s edition related to fin influencers) or those selling health products, can only be a good thing as it will combat misinformation which has become a big concern for regulatory bodies.
For the TGA, since the inception of social media, misinformation has been a major concern. Some products have been endorsed that were either fraudulent in their claims or, worse case, led to deaths. The TGA wants consumers to have
confidence that any testimonial is free from influence or bias and that the products they purchase have information supplied that is true and correct to label. The TGA has gone so far as to require influencers to delete past posts in relation to certain products e.g., sunscreen, if those posts were incentivised in any way. Influencers have been a key sales strategy for many well-known brands and these changes are likely to impact sales in the short term as the grapple with the new codes now in play. For influencers, they may need to look elsewhere to secure their fortunes. Given the pharmaceutical industry as always been a lucrative one to be a part of the new rules are sure to hurt some influencers bottom line going forward. Unfortunately, we don’t believe there will be any Change.org campaigns or the like to help their cause.
Some people have spoken out against the bans believing it will have a negative impact on their lives; namely LGBTQIA+ and female social media influencers. However, most people believe combating misinformation is more important than some people making a lot of money from promoting products that they likely don’t care about and/ or don’t believe in. Some people have gone so far as to state that influencers should go and “get a real job”; believing influencers have become famous for all the wrong reasons. To clarify these new rules brought out this year, the TGA stated that “companies can continue to connect with influencers for the purpose of product promotion”. However, an influencer cannot, whether direct or inferred, provide any type of personal endorsement of health products. They can work with a business but cannot express their personal opinions about the business or the products they sell. As such, an influencer

Central Geelong’s laneways and buildings are looking more vibrant than ever before.
Find Geelong Column by Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan
If you wander down Little Malop Street, Little Ryrie Street, James Street, Wright Place, Cuzens Place, Minns Lane and Ryrie Street, you’ll be sure to notice the difference. That’s because nine women street artists have made the city their canvas and splashed it with colour. Council commissioned them as part of the $150,000 Street Art Commission Project to complete the creative works.
The arts and culture industry has had a difficult time of it during the pandemic, so this is a fantastic opportunity to give the scene a well-deserved leg up. And given street art is largely male dominated, we wanted to strengthen the representation of women artists. As society continues to open up, we’re keen to entice both locals and visitors back to Central Geelong. What better way to do that than enjoying an outdoor gallery while eating, shopping and watching live entertainment! Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting artist Jasmine Mansbridge on James Street. Jasmine talked me through the inspiration behind her brightly coloured piece while she shaped it before my eyes, as passers-by stopped in their tracks. In addition to their commissioned art pieces, two artists are calling on the community to tap into their own creativity. Manda Lane, who’s known for botanical-focused art, invites you to colour-in some beautiful native florals of the Greater Geelong region on Saturday 16 April. The paper floral works will be turned into a mural on the corner of Little Malop Street and Moorabool Street. Register here: https://geelong.link/wallflower On Saturday 23 April from 11am3pm, the community is welcome to join abstract artist Kerrie Poliness in a walking workshop to create large-scale geometric patterns on the ground with a specially designed chalk drawing stick. The action is happening on the concreted forecourt in Johnstone Park next to City Hall. You can drop in at any time and stay for 10 minutes or the whole drawing. These workshops are your opportunity to have some fun, while contributing to Geelong’s eclectic street art scene.

Paid Parental Leave Scheme to be Expanded Andrew Brown (Australian Associated Press)
Single parents will now be able to access the full 20 weeks of paid parental leave, under changes to the scheme announced in the federal budget. The 2022/23 budget unveiled changes to the paid parental leave scheme, which would expand eligibility for the program. Enhanced paid parental leave will provide up to 20 weeks of flexible leave for eligible working families. The changes would mean eligible single parents would be able to access an additional two weeks of paid parental leave. The federal government will provide $346.1 million over five years to improve the paid parental leave scheme.
It’s estimated 180,000 new parents The fund is used to help set up new access the paid parental leave scheme child care services in rural, remote and regional areas where child care services each year. are limited.
The scheme will be changed by rolling the Dad and Partner Pay into Parental Leave Pay to create a single scheme.
The budget papers say the changes to the scheme would not result in any existing people who are on the scheme being worse off under the changes.
It’s forecast $11 billion will be spent on child care during 2022/23, with $10.7 billion coming from the child care subsidy.
The paid parental leave can be taken within two years of the birth or adoption of the child.
A further $19.4 million has been set aside over five years to set up a new grant round of the community child care fund.
Flood-affected childcare centres will also receive a boost from the budget, with $22.1 million over two years to increase the community child care fund.

Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee for Casual Employees – Apply before you get sick By Warren Strybosch
Unable to work
Victoria is the first state to provide 5 days a year of sick and carer’s pay at the national minimum wage for casual and contract workers in certain occupations. The Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee will operate for 2 years, starting in 2022 and is fully funded by the Victorian Government. The Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee provides casual and contract workers with a guarantee they will receive sick pay when they need to take time off when they are sick or need to care for loved ones.
Confirm that you would have done paid work during the claim period, however, you were unable to work because of either:
Important: Your employees must register and be approved with Services Victoria BEFORE they get sick. If you apply for this payment after you become ill, you will not get paid for the days you were sick prior to applying.
Eligible occupations
Whilst this is good news for casual workers, it is confusing for the employers. Currently, employers pay an additional 25% leave loading to casuals to cover the fact that casuals did not get leave entitlements. However, this new payment to casual workers does not remove the employers leave loading liability which will need to continue to be paid. It is unlikely the leave loading will be removed. Eligibility for the Sick Pay Guarantee To be eligible for the Sick Pay Guarantee you must meet all these criteria: • • • • • • •
Age – be 15 years or over Type of employee – be a casual employee or self-employed with no other employees (such as a sole trader or an independent contractor) Leave entitlements – not be entitled to paid personal, sick or carer’s leave in any of your jobs Workplace – work physically in Victoria, no matter where you live Right to work – have the right to work in Australia Occupation – work in an eligible occupation (see table below) Average hours worked – on average you work at least 7.6 hours per week in an eligible occupation(s).
What you need to make a claim
• •
an injury or illness that affected you you had to care for or support a member of your immediate family, or a member of your household, because they had an illness, injury or unexpected emergency that affected them.
If you, your parent or legal guardian submit any false claim, it is at the absolute discretion of the department whether or not you get further payments under the Sick Pay Guarantee.
Occupations eligible in the first phase of the Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee are:

Type of work
Hospitality workers

Coming Election - Labor’s focusing on Aged Care During the budget reply, the opposition leader decided not to talk about economic policy but instead used the opportunity to kick off his election campaign with the address centred around aged care. Aged Care The address was full of spending promise. If elected they would spend $2.5 billion in the Aged Care sector with the aim to improve the standards and quality of care under a five-point plan, including: 1.
requiring every aged care facility to have a qualified nurse on site 24 hours a day;
2.
mandating every aged care resident receives a minimum 215 minutes of care per day (noting this was recommended by the Royal Commission);
3.
4.
5.
introducing more accountability measures including requiring providers to publicly report their spending and promising more staff and funding for the Aged Care Safety Commission.
delivering a pay rise for aged care workers through an appeal to the Fair Work Commission to set higher wages (noting this financial commitment was not included in the estimated $2.5 billion aged care package but could amount to as much as $4 billion if the Commission agrees with the unions on the pay rise they are seeking);
Interestingly, the Opposition once again avoided discussing economics and kept away from answering the key question as to how they were going to pay for all of this, as well as all the other spending promises they have made to date.
providing better food for residents by setting a mandatory nutrition standard for agreed care; and
What was notably interesting in the Oppositions reply was their statement that they would increase defence spending
which is at odds with the Greens. Labor needs the Greens bi-partisan support for the up-and-coming election if they have any hope of winning, so this announcement is sure to stir the hornets’ nest. We look forward to finding out how Labor proposes to pay for all their future spending initiatives. History has shown that Labor is very quick to spend money to win the people (when I say people it usually ends up in the hands of the unions and not the ordinary everyday Australian) but find it very difficult to manage it wisely.

Free Access to Company Information - ASIC fees to be removed By Warren Strybosch
One of the announcements in the 2022 Budget is that ASIC fees are to be removed as part of the Commonwealth’s deregulation agenda. From September 2023, it is anticipated that businesses will be able to access company information and pay less ASIC fees when the new business registery service goes live via the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) online digital platform. The following fees may be removed or reduced: • • •
Company search fees; Company annual review late fees; and Lodgement fees.
With the introduction of the Director ID, it looks like the Commonwealth also wants to make certain director and company information is more accessible. It is not yet clear as to exactly what information will be made available to the general public, but it is likely it will include information on company ownership, directorships, office addresses and financial results. The registry fee reforms are anticipated to save Australians and their businesses $64.9 million in fees over 3 years from 2023-24. The changes are part of the much broader Modernising Business Registers program to make interactions with government simpler and quicker, improve the currency and accuracy of registry information and promote transparency.

How to Negotiate Better Employee Benefits (Australian Associatd Press)
With the COVID-19 pandemic taking hold again, many employers aren’t in a position to hand out pay rises, no matter how hard you’ve worked. If that’s the case in your role, it’s worth asking for other non-financial benefits that can improve your work and home life. Negotiating a pay rise or salary package is nerve wracking at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic. And, while you should always ask for what you think you’re worth, the economic climate may prevent you from getting it. Slow wage growth has been an issue in Australia for several years, even before the COVID-19 pandemic sent it tumbling to a record low of 1.4 per cent last year. Fortunately, employers are increasingly offering non-financial benefits to help entice employees to join or stay with their business. If your company has a wage freeze in place, and you don’t expect to be granted a raise this year, it might be time to think outside the box. Here’s some things to keep in mind when you’re negotiating non-financial benefits. How to negotiate better employee benefits 1. Identify which benefits you want most Before approaching your employer, think about the benefits that would be most valuable to you. What would enhance your lifestyle and wellbeing? What would you be happy to accept in lieu of a pay rise (at this time)?
The perk that’s consistently rated as the most desirable in Australia is flexible working hours. Whether you need to balance family commitments, study, a side hustle or just want the chance to exercise and recuperate after work, employees value having the ability to choose the hours they work. Seek research also has found that time in lieu, the ability to work from home, health insurance and subsidised education and training courses are among our top five most desired benefits. If these don’t appeal, you might want to consider asking for extra annual, sick or carers leave, health and wellness programs, employee share options, a better commission structure, even a new job title. Whatever is most important to you is worth asking for. 2. Understand what you have to offer Understanding how much value you bring your employer will help you make your case. Get granular and find examples to clearly demonstrate the value you bring. This might include things like results you’ve achieved, sales you’ve made, accounts you’ve won or projects you’ve completed. You could also consider how valuable your knowledge of the company’s systems and processes is, as well as the nature of your role within the business. 3. Research the market Next look at job ads for your role and see what type of benefits companies are offering. Is it something your employer could match? You might also like to research your

value in the wider job market, as it may give you a stronger negotiating position. Are your skills in high demand? Is there a shortage of workers to fill your role? Would it be difficult for your employer to hire a candidate with your skills and experience? This information can all offer you support to back up your request for better benefits. 4. Set up a discussion It’s best to set up a meeting to talk about your request. Talk to your boss about the ways your work is benefitting the business, and have your list of non-financial perks ready to discuss. If you’re asking for these in lieu of a pay rise, make that clear at the time. Try to spell out the benefits your non-financial rewards would have for the business, as well as for yourself. For example, flexible work hours might mean you can start early when you’re most fresh and focused. 5. Plan for the best and worst outcomes Whether or not your request is granted, have a back-up plan ready. Ask for a follow-up meeting to discuss your salary and benefits in three to six months’ time. And get feedback on exactly what you need to do until then to put yourself in a better position for next time. In an uncertain economy and tightening job market, many employers are having to rethink how best to incentivise staff. If non-financial rewards would make your life better, it’s worth including them in your salary discussions.

SMSF: Non-arm’s Length Income - expenditure incurred under a non-arm’s length arrangement will attract higher taxes
ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch
Have you ever owned a property in your SMSF and sold it to yourself for less than market value? Are you an accountant preparing the SMSF returns and financials and not charging the SMSF accounting fees associated with doing the work? Have you lent money to your SMSF and the SMSF is paying the interest at less than commercial rates? If so, the income produced by the SMSF may be taxed at the highest marginal tax rate. The ATO Law Companion Ruling LCR/2021/2 clarifies how the amendments to section 295-550 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (ITAA 1997) operates in a scheme where the parties do not deal with each other at arm’s length and the trustee of a complying superannuation entity incurs non-arm’s length expenditure (or where expenditure is not incurred) in gaining or producing ordinary or statutory income. The amendments apply in relation to income derived in the 2018–19 income year and later income years, regardless of whether the scheme was entered into before 1 July 2018. In other words, it relates to goods or services you received, paid-for, incurred, for which you paid less or received for less than market value. If you did, then some or all of the income with in your SMSF might be taxed at the highest marginal tax rate and not the low tax component rate of 15%.
Example 1 – Non-arm’s length expenditure was incurred to acquire an asset During the 2019–20 income year, Armin holds commercial property with a market value of $800,000. During the income year, he sells the commercial property to himself acting as trustee of his self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) for $200,000. The SMSF leases the property to a third party. For the purposes of subsection 295-550(1), the scheme involves the SMSF acquiring the commercial property from Armin for an amount that is less than its market value. There is a sufficient nexus between the non-arm’s length expenditure incurred in acquiring that property and the rental income the SMSF derives from leasing the property for the rental income to be NALI. Further, there will be a sufficient nexus between the non-arm’s length expenditure and any capital gain derived on the disposal of the property for the capital gain to be NALI. Example 2 – Non-arm’s length expenditure incurred has a nexus to all income of the fund For the 2020–21 income year, Mikasa as trustee of her SMSF engages an accounting firm, where she is a partner, to provide accounting services for the SMSF. The accounting services include services other than those relating to complying with, or managing, the SMSF’s income tax affairs and obligations. The accounting firm does not charge the SMSF for those
services as a result of non-arm’s length dealings between the parties (and not as part of any discount policy referred to in paragraph 51 of this Ruling). For the purposes of subsection 295-550(1), the scheme involves the SMSF acquiring the accounting services under a nonarm’s length arrangement. The nonarm’s length expenditure (being the nil amount incurred for the services) has a sufficient nexus with all of the ordinary and statutory income derived by the SMSF for the 2020–21 income year. As such, all of the SMSF’s income for the 2020–21 income year is NALI. Subsection 295-550(1) would cease to apply if the arrangement changes for the 2021–22 income year so that the SMSF incurs expenditure for the accounting services provided by the accounting firm of an amount that would have been expected to be incurred where the parties were acting at arm’s length. In this situation, none of the SMSF’s income for the 2021–22 income year is NALI. Example 3 – Purchase financed through a limited recourse borrowing arrangement on non-arm’s length terms During the 2018–19 income year, Kellie (as trustee of her SMSF) entered into a non-commercial LRBA with herself in her individual capacity to purchase a commercial property valued at $2 million. Her SMSF borrowed 100% of the purchase price and the terms of the loan
www.findgeelong.com.au
APRIL 2022 | FIND GEELONG
included interest being charged at a rate of 1.5% per annum and repayments only being made on an annual basis over a 25-year period. Kellie’s SMSF received a commercial rate of rent from the property of $12,000 per month. If Kellie’s SMSF had entered into an LRBA on arm’s length terms, it would be expected that repayments of principal and interest would have occurred on a monthly basis and interest would be charged on the LRBA at a commercial rate. The loan to market value ratio would have also not exceeded commercial levels. For the purposes of subsection 295-550(1), the scheme involves the SMSF entering into the LRBA with Kellie, complying with the terms of the LRBA, purchasing the commercial property, and deriving the rental income. The terms of the LRBA constitute a non-arm’s length dealing between the SMSF and Kellie, which resulted in the SMSF incurring expenditure in gaining or producing rental income that was less than would otherwise be expected if those parties were dealing with each other at arm’s length in relation to the scheme.
The rental income derived from the commercial property by the SMSF for all income years is therefore NALI, regardless of whether the LRBA is subsequently refinanced on arm’s length terms. The non-arm’s length expenditure incurred under the LRBA will also result in any capital gain that might arise from a subsequent CGT event happening in relation to the property (such as disposal of the property) being NALI. This will be the case regardless of whether the LRBA is subsequently refinanced on arm’s length terms. RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe
Ever think about your fitness? Chances are you do... in some way or another. But I’m guessing, that when you think of ‘being fit’, you think physically. I’ll even go so far as to say that your awareness and focus around being ‘emotionally fit’ is not even a thought...? How’d I go, is that true? Fitness. There’s physical and there’s emotional.
www.findgeelong.com.au
These traits, this ability to be emotionally fit, shows through an increased knowledge of who you are. You are also low in drama and know when and how to language your truth. You’re open to others; show more compassion, and every day you move closer to being in complete alignment with your values.
An emotionally fit person ‘feels’ good And it’s a wonderful place to lead from. It brings objectivity. It brings the ability to adjust, even lean-in to, uncertainty.
Emotional Fitness is based on the relationship you have with yourself, and it can be measured by the quality of your relationship with uncertainty...
Leaning-in will make it easier to feel inspired and creative; to see opportunity in new experiences, in an uncertain world, in a workplace that’s filled with change.
The more emotionally fit you are, the greater your ability to handle ‘hard’ moments better...because you can see things more accurately.
For some people, when they are surrounded by uncertainty, they fill their world with comfort...
You’re not clouded by mistrust, rigid rules, swayed perspective, lack of boundaries... Instead... * you are flexible in your thinking more ‘fascinated’ than offended * you see things more clearly * you trust yourself and * you have self-respect
Anything that makes them feel safe, secure and reduces never-ending internal questioning. Another word for comfort is certainty. So, there is a big possibility that you and/ or your team have overcompensated with comfort and certainty in your worlds
Comfort clouds; • outside the box thinking • the yearning to feel challenged and • the desire to create. Staying in your comfort zone, allowing this kind of thinking and feelings to foster in your workplace will surely be stifling and choking your bottom-line results. It’s time to encourage greatness! It’s time to get comfortable being uncomfortable! Let’s bring back that team spark! …let’s move towards the state of becoming emotionally fit. Here’s some easy steps that you and your team can follow; 1. to stimulate originality and expression 2. to go back to basics and 3. to EMBRACE THE UNCERTAINTY of this new world we live in! 1. HAVE A GO! – Say Yes and then work out how. The key is to make up your mind quickly and change it slowly. When you say YES, it confirms you’re worth it. You will then back yourself to figure out the rest. This way you’ll consistently discover that you’ve got more to give, and you have yet another level within. 2. TRUST YOUR SENSES Doing this effectively will form a belief within yourself that you can draw on at times of uncertainty - this will carry you

through. By believing in yourself and trusting your senses, you’re more likely to give it a go in the areas that you may not think you know so well.
Through striving forward and giving it a go, we discover where we struggle and where the gaps are for us to move forward.
3.
DO ONE THING EVERY DAY TO GET YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE Could be as simple as speaking to someone you wouldn’t usually, going down a slide at the park (with or without the kids!), go bare foot on a trail walk.
Please get in touch if you’re keen to know more on how to become emotionally fit and how to bring this into your personal and/or business world.
“Fantastic, I now know what I have to learn and where to progress”
Much of these learnings attributed to Joe Pane and the current Emotional Fitness Formula Program that I am enrolled in
4. DO THE LESS PREDICTABLE THING Not to shock others, but to surprise yourself. This will build your inner trust.
If you were to instil this importance into your business values, you’ll see a team that grows together and a business future that will certainly look brighter.
5.
CHOOSE A MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND LOOSEN UP –
“I have no idea how to do this, yet I’m going to have a good ole crack at it and work out where I suck”.
The most important journey one can take is the journey of self-discovery.
Commit to building a resilient team that promotes individual greatness yet moves together seamlessly as one… this is where the magic happens.

Inflation on the Rise – Prepare for Interest Rate Rises
By Warren Strybosch
In February the RBA indicated it could see an inflation rate up 3 ¼ % in mid 2022, though Westpac forecast an inflation rate of 5% in their 14th March forecast. With inflation on the rise, the market is now expecting interest rates to start moving also. If you have a mortgage or investment loan, it might be time to consider speaking with a mortgage broker about a fixed rate loan. By saving fuel, you’ll pay LESS tax
Beat Rising Fuel Prices with a Novated Lease SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls
Millions of Australian drivers got a shock recently at the fuel pump when fuel hit $2.00 (or more) a litre. The price of fuel here is affected by global markets, and due to events unfolding in Russia and Ukraine, prices around the world have become a pain point for drivers. Given most of the population is returning to offices post-pandemic, the price rise is hitting commuters hard. The effects of such increases don’t stop at the pump though, with family budgets being overly stung at a time when the cost of living is severely increasing. So what is the solution? Even though the world is gradually shifting to hybrid and electric vehicles, fuel is still an essential part of daily living for drivers. What you may not know is that a novated lease will not only reduce your fuel costs but save on a whole host of other expenses as well. How do you pay less for fuel? Imagine that every time you fill up, you get a discount. This is the beauty of a novated lease. This is a type of arrangement where your car lease and running costs are paid via your employer. Because the repayments are made using your pre-tax (and possibly some of your post-tax) salary, you won’t pay tax on your everyday car costs, including fuel. It’s not hard to set up either. Simply talk to your friendly salary packaging provider to start looking at vehicle options. How much will you save on fuel? While everyone else is trying to make the most of the last few drops in the tank, you can pull into the fuel station with
Yes, you read that right. Not only will you be saving a bundle on keeping your fuel tank topped up, but a novated lease will help you to pay less tax on every pay cycle. Because your novated lease deductions are from your pre-tax salary, you are only taxed on your remaining taxable income. As your take-home pay is slightly less after your deduction, your tax payable amount is reduced. Check out our novated lease page to find out more. Switch to an EVP on a novated lease
confidence. The savings will vary slightly depending on your income, but generally, you can expect to save about 30% every time you fill-up. This makes a significant difference to your home budget, especially when fuel prices hit the roof. Not only can you top-up without worrying about the fluctuating number on that LED sign, but you can also use your issued fuel card wherever you choose. This gives you a discounted fuel capability in the palm of your hand. You can also claim fuel costs later if for some reason you don’t have your fuel card handy. Anything you don’t spend out of your fuel allowance will also be credited back to you, so don’t worry if you suddenly find yourself working from home again without the need for regular fuel. The fuel savings add up
If you’re looking to avoid the fuel pump altogether by switching to an electric vehicle, but have been delaying your purchase due to price, a novated lease can set you up with a new EVP for less. As long as the vehicle you choose is less than 10 years old at the end of the lease term, you can opt for the latest electric or hybrid vehicles. Yes, that includes Teslas. Your novated lease will not only save you money on costs like registration, insurance and servicing, but you won’t pay GST on the purchase. It’s the smartest way to get a new car and avoid rising fuel costs in the long run. We’ll answer your questions. If you need help with your FBT claims, please call to talk to a real person at The Salary Packaging People who can answer your questions. If you’re an employer and not currently happy with your salary packaging services, now is a good time to switch to a truly personable provider. Contact us online or call 03 5229 4200.
Obviously, fuel prices fluctuate from day to day, but with a novated lease, you’ll save no matter which day of the week you fill-up. Here are some examples of how much you’ll save at the pump weekly and monthly.
WHAT YOU’LL SAVE ON FUEL $1.80 per litre
$2.01 per litre
Average tank size 50 litres Normal cost to fill tank $90.00
Average tank size 50 litres Normal cost to fill tank 100.50
Novated lease cost $1.26 per litre
Novated lease cost $1.40 per litre
Novated lease cost to fill tank $63.00 Savings per week $27.00
Novated lease cost to fill tank $70.35 Savings per week $30.15
Savings per month $108
Savings per month $120.60
Savings based on recent Victorian regular unleaded petrol pricing, $80,000 salary and assumes fuel budget in a novated lease arrangement. The calculated amounts are a guide only and should not be considered as accurate when deciding if a novated lease is suitable to your circumstances.

FAMILY LAW PROPERTY SETTLEMENT – WHAT IS THE PROCESS? LAWYERS By John Van Beveren
Sometimes separation or divorce is amicable, and the parties agree on the division of assets quickly. Often the parties cannot agree.
Once correspondence has begun between the parties, an agreement can be worked towards. If the agreement is consistent with the law and is just and equitable taking into account other factors. Then it may be drafted by a lawyer to make sure it is legally binding. Is Court Inevitable?
Working out the asset pool after separation can be complex and the parties may feel unsure of what they are entitled to or feel that the split is not fair. Either way, getting the right legal advice from a property settlement lawyer is crucial to getting the best result and know what the entitlements are.
Most cases can resolve without legal proceedings by being able to go through mediation or negotiations.
What if you agree on your property settlement between yourselves?
The other reason matters go to court is when one party refuses to engage constructively. Legal proceedings will then have the effect of requiring the other party to engage properly in the settlement discussions.
If you agree on how your property is to be divided with your former partner, it is important that the parties enter into either a binding financial agreement or obtain consent orders from the court. A binding financial agreement (also known as a “BFA”) is an agreement which covers the division of property, including superannuation and, if required spousal maintenance. TThis is a very effective method of formalising how the parties divide the assets and saves time and money by avoiding lengthy court processes. BFAs require each party to obtain independent legal advice for it to be legally binding. Consent orders from the Court require evidence put before the court for it to determine that the order is just and equitable. However, they do have a higher degree of enforceability. What if no agreement is reached on how to divide the assets? The first step is to set out your position to the other party, including what you think a fair settlement would be.
Substantial disagreement about how the asset pool should be divided is typically when the court process should be engaged.
If the matter goes to Court, the division of assets must be assessed and determined by the judge to be “just and equitable”.
2. Contributions of Each Party Both financial and non-financial contributions during the relationship are also relevant. The law acknowledges that different parties bring different amounts of money and other assets to a relationship. Contributions like looking after the family by raising children and home duties are also just as relevant as earning a higher income.
3. Future Needs Adjustments Adjustments based on future needs will also often have a significant impact on how the pool of assets will be divided. Some factors that the law considers relevant are a person’s earning capacity, age, health, who will have primary care of the children; and a person’s ability to generate an income.
4. The Order Must Be “Just and Equitable”
The 4 Legal Criteria used to determine how Assets are Divided
This is an overarching principle which will be weighed by the Court, having regard to the varying circumstances of the particular facts before it.
The criteria that will determine a party’s claim to financial assets are:
How can Van Beveren Lawyers help me?
1. Identifying the Value of the “Pool” of Assets
Our compassionate lawyers can help you understand the lenses the court may apply to your individual circumstances.
The asset pool comprises of everything that the parties own. All real estate, shares, trust assets, businesses, cars, boats, tools, jewellery, cash will form part of the asset pool. It also includes property you have obtain after seperation.
Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and our role is to assist you moving forward and helping you obtain the best outcome.
It does not matter whose name these assets are in. The Family Law Act can cut across all legal entities and capture everything in which the parties have an interest, and all the assets are scooped up into the property pool and grouped together. APRIL 2022 | FIND GEELONG

Best Tips for Cleaning Up After Painting PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof
The job of painting your home doesn’t finish when you stand back and admire your smooth, newly coloured walls and ceilings. There is a whole lot of stuff to do after the last brushstroke before you can celebrate your painting project being fully completed with a glass of wine or beer. What do I do with cloths, sheets and tape?
Even while you are painting, you can make your final clean-up easier and quicker by having a damp cloth handy to wipe up drips and spills straightaway. Drips on dry or non-porous surfaces can be wiped off with mineral spirits or paint thinner. Before the paint dries, remove all masking tape. This will minimise the likelihood of the new paint film lifting off with the tape. No problem if it has dried – just score the edge of the tape with a sharp knife or razor blade before removing the tape. For glass surfaces, wait until the paint is completely dry before using a knife or paint scraper. When you remove the drop cloths or sheets, fold the corners into the middle.
This prevents spills or drips from flicking onto surrounding areas. Oily rags can spontaneously combust (catch on fire) if piled up or left in a closed container or space. Not fun! You can safeguard against this by immersing oily rags in an open container filled with water or drying them before putting in the washing machine. How do I clean paintbrushes? There are few things more tedious than getting your brushes, rollers, edgers, scrapers and paint trays out for a new job and discovering that you didn’t clean them after your last one. When you’ve finished painting, clean whatever equipment you used immediately so that paint doesn’t dry permanently on them, and dry them thoroughly to prevent rust. If you used latex paints, you will need warm soapy water; oil paints need turps, mineral spirits or paint thinner. Don’t soak brushes in solvent or water as this can damage the bristles. Pour the soapy water or solvent into a container and dip the paintbrush into the solution. Work it through the brush bristles, dipping up and down in the container several times. Spin the paint brush in a waste area to remove excess water or thinner and then repeat process with a clean container and clean water or thinner.
A useful tip is to use one set of synthetic painting tools for oil-based products and another set for water-based products. It is much easier to clean the paint brushes if you don’t switch back and forth between the two types of bases. A paintbrush comb is one of the best ways to clean a paint brush. It cleans through the centre of the brush and removes any residue near the ferrule’s edge. Paint residue left in the brush hardens, causing the bristles to ‘set’, which makes them lose their bend recovery. Once clean, use the paintbrush comb to straighten the bristles or filaments. Reshape the paint brush to its original shape and lay flat to dry. What about rollers and trays? For rollers, disassemble and rinse with warm water, add detergent and work it into a lather to remove the paint. Air dry it standing upright to avoid crushing the fibres. For solvent-based paint, pour the solvent into the paint tray, circulate it through the roller and let it soak for a few minutes. Squeeze the excess solvent out of the roller and repeat the process with new solvent until it’s clean. Pour unused paint from your tray back into the tin, providing it’s not contaminated by insects or dirt. Run water over your paint tray, use a scrubbing brush to remove the rest of the paint and dry the tray off with an old cloth. Discard tray liners when dry. After using the appropriate cleaner on your hands, wash them with soap and water. Of course, to save time and effort, you could hire a professional painter who will do all this for you!

Reignite Your Passion BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins
Is your passion as strong as it was when you started your business? What is your Vision for your future? Where do you see yourself in 1, 3, 5, 10 years’ time? Why are you in business?
For those of us who have been in business a number of years, we sometimes loose our mojo. We forget why we started our business in the first place. Especially after any major uncontrollable events such as we have experienced over the last few years. To look towards a future with passion, longevity, and scalability, now more than ever we need to think outside the square. The most successful businesses over the years are those that have been able to adapt to consumers’ needs. Not what they want to sell. Spending patterns have changed, needs have changed. Consumers are looking for that which they do not have, to make their lives easier, both at work and home. One of the most successful companies in the world right now is Zoom. Most people did not need zoom 2 years ago but now almost all service providers and offices use it continuously. Many families use it to keep in touch with friends and family members around the world. Kodak used to be one of the biggest companies in the US today they only sell products that relate to the print market as they did not move with the times into the digital sphere. Your purpose does not change. Your direction may change, the product mix you sell will change over time, but your purpose rarely ever changes. Every one of us has their own passion and purpose for starting a business.
Did you go into business to:• • • • •
•
• •
Leave a legacy for your family? Build a nest egg for your retirement expeditions? Increase your assets for early retirement? Want to be your own boss? Want to work your hours around family commitment?
Set up a business that will allow you to travel and still run your business in online? Support others in the community? Give back in any way you can?
Whatever your purpose was, do you still feel the same passion for your business today.
Reinvigorate that passion in your business through increased Sales, Profits, customer traffic and basket size. Your consumers have been locked up for so long they are looking for excuses to get out and to buy what they do not have or need to replace. Whether you sell physical products or a services, the action plans are essentially the same. Create theatre and excitement with your goods through the selling process. Tax Invoice
- what is it and why is it important to get it right
Example 1: Tax invoice for a sale under $1,000
BOOKKEEPER By Mary-Clare Switz
In my practice I regularly see invoices, both purchase and sales, that do not meet the ATO requirements. Often, we have to go back to suppliers and ask for a complaint Tax Invoice to be issued before a bill is approved to be paid. The reasons for not providing a compliant document are varied including simply not knowing what to do, not knowing how to set up the software to produce one, and at the other end of the scale, sellers not having a registered ABN, sellers providing a piece of paper with no intention of reporting income. When a business buys a product or service for $82.50 (GST inclusive) or more, they need to have a ‘Tax Invoice’ to be able to claim the GST portion of the purchase. Note that a business who is not registered for GST because their annual turnover is less than $75,000 can only issue a standard “Invoice” and would include conditions 2, 3 4, 5 & 8 below. Tax Invoices can be paper or in digital format such as an emailed PDF or it can be issued via e-invoicing. The requirements of what is included on a Tax Invoice are broken into two categories:
Example 2: Tax invoice for a sale of more than $1,000
Sales under $1,000 – must include enough information to determine the following 7 pieces of information: 1.
Document is intended to be a tax invoice
2.
Seller’s identity
3.
Seller’s ABN (Australian Business Number) Date the invoice was issued
4. 5.
Brief description of the items sold, including the quantity if relevant and the price
6.
GST amount payable … either the total GST on the invoice or if all items on the invoice have GST and the total GST is 1/11th of the total on the invoice, you may include a statement that says ‘Total price includes GST’
7.
Extent to which each sale on the invoice is a taxable sale
Sales $1,000 or more – must include all of the conditions above, plus: 8.
23
Since we are talking about Invoices in general … I advise my clients that your Sales invoice (be it a standard or tax invoice) is an opportunity to market your business. Include on your invoice: •
Your business logo
•
Style your invoice to reflect your business (this is really important for creatives)
•
Your contact details (especially email address so remittances can be sent to you)
•
Your social links if you have any
•
Your how to pay details including bank information and other merchant gateways (bottom line is to make it easy for clients to pay you!)
•
Do NOT send an invoice in word or excel – ever
The state of your standard or tax invoice reflects on you and your business. Get it right and you look good!!
The Buyer’s identity or ABN

Embroidery Isn’t the Only Option for Garment Customization! EMBROIDERY SPECIALIST By Kerry Kaspi
Although embroidery is the most versatile option for getting your logo on your garments, there are a wide range of alternative garment customization options available to suit your business. Some Decoration Options: A detailed crest or logo on a knitted, woolen school jumper? In this case vinyl and/or printing won’t be suitable because of the high stretch and the irregular surface. Embroidery provides a high-quality finish that looks terrific and professional which will outlast the garment. A large decoration on a low quality, white cotton t-shirt for promotional fun run? Promotional t-shirts are usually made for short term use so longevity is not of high importance. Therefore, a high-quality long-lasting method of decoration may be too costly. A vinyl sublimation print provides for a great way of displaying all the necessary information as well as lasting the duration of the t-shirt within budget constraints. Large lettering on the back of a Hi Vis Garment? Embroidery could be sow and can result in puckering on extremely thin vests whereas dye sublimation will be fast, flat and long lasting. It looks great, can print very detailed single colour designs, allows the garment to breath as well as being virtually indestructible.
Decoration Methods: Embroidery • High quality look • Detailed logos • Outlasts the garment • Any fabric • Different products ie hats, beanies, bags, pillows • High wash fastness with polyester thread • Fixed colour range • Thread colour not affected by fabric colour • Logo quality depends upon skill of digitizer, quality of machine, backing, thread etc.
• • • •
Colours look very vibrant and bold on most materials Long lasting More colours the more expensive it is Perfect for simple designs
If you’re unsure of which option would suit you, follow our contact details and we will be able to advise you.
Dye Sublimation • Quick and easy to apply • Single colour to full colour photographic quality • Useable only on high polyester content fabrics • Use only on white/ light-coloured products • High print quality depending on density of material • Very often used on hi visibility vests with black text on the rear Vinyl Sublimation • Can be used on most types of fabric • Fabric colour does not affect print colour • Can’t be washed in warm water • Low quantity is quite expensive however high quantity is very cost efficient • Colours are vibrant no matter the fabric
Kerry Kaspi
Screenprinting • High setup costs per colour • Larger quantities are very cost efficient, not suitable for small quantities

Is it possible that your stress is impacting your immune system? NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger
The last two years have certainly been a challenge for most of us. Whilst some people have enjoyed more time to themselves and cutting out the commute time for work during lockdowns, others have found themselves juggling work with home-schooling, lonely without social interaction, or afraid of the effects of the virus. What does stress do? The autonomic nervous system controls digestion, heart rate, and blood pressure, and stress plays a major role in how these functions work. It consists of two opposing modes of operation: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems. You have likely heard of the sympathetic nervous system, the “flight or fight” response, where cortisol production is increased in the adrenal glands. For a short-term situation, this is helpful as it gives you the energy required to deal with the stress and promotes resilience to stress in the future. One example of this is the stress of regular moderate exercise, which has been found to improve and protect the immune system. But long-term stress is where the problem lies. It dysregulates both the innate and adaptive immune responses. The innate immune system is a generalised first-line of defence against disease. The adaptive immune system recognises diseases previously fought and specialises defences. Long-term circulation of cortisol increases inflammation through the body and causes tissue breakdown leading to lowered immunity. Both inflammatory and infective disease is increased with long-term life stress.
How can I reduce stress? The parasympathetic nervous system, “rest and digest”, opposes the sympathetic nervous system, and what’s great about the autonomic nervous system is that you can have control over it. Just 10 minutes a few times a day of slow breathing exercises can increase the time your body spends in the rest and digest mode, reducing cortisol and improving your immune system. As mentioned earlier, regular exercise also helps, along with doing things you enjoy: creative activities, time with friends, time in nature, listening to music or any other activity that brings you joy.
Mix equal parts of each herb and store in an airtight container. 1 teaspoon of tea infused in 1 cup of boiling water. Let it steep until it has cooled enough to drink. Remove the infuser and enjoy. This advice is general in nature and not intended to be prescriptive. For individualised prescriptive advice, please see a naturopath or other health care practitioner.
YEP tea YEP (yarrow, elder, and peppermint) tea has been used traditionally to both strengthen the immune system and in times of infection. Yarrow is antiinflammatory and relaxing, elder is high in vitamin C and can reduce mucous, peppermint is also relaxing and will reduce mucous. You can use either elder berries or flowers, but I prefer the berries. You can buy these at a health food shop or organic shop.

their distributions are in accordance with the expectations of the ATO, otherwise they may be subject to an audit. Helping them understand their obligations is paramount coming up to the end of the current income year.
Potential end for Div 7A and sub-trust arrangements A draft determination has changed the ATO’s position on how sub-trust arrangements apply within the context of Div 7A. Effectively, when a corporate beneficiary and trustee of the trust are ultimately the same people, Div 7A will apply directly to unpaid present entitlements (UPEs). The assumed provision of financial accommodation in practice means that sub-trust arrangements will have no benefit when it comes to deferral of tax or repayments of loans. Further, support packages continue to be available to assist micro and small businesses that are impacted by lockdowns and restrictions. “Healthy Pets - Happy People - Connected Communities” Cherished Pets is a unique veterinary social enterprise established in 2015 in the Geelong region by veterinarian Dr Alicia Kennedy to support companion pet ownership of vulnerable people and to support pets and their people through all life stages, including vulnerable times. Being the first veterinary practice in the world to become BCorp certified, the Cherished Pets organisation encompasses two entities to assist the needs of vulnerable people and their furry friends. The Cherished Pets Community Veterinary Care is a social benefit company that offers a unique bond-centred veterinary service through the community pet hub in Ocean Grove. The veterinary team focus on building a connection with their clients and their pets so that they understand best the needs and can ensure ongoing health care of their pet. In the event of serious illness and conditions requiring surgery or hospitalization they help construct a plan through their network of veterinary and animal health professionals and provide ongoing support. They offer a compassionate home euthanasia service which was developed with a whole heart and commitment to ensuring a pet can leave this life in the comfort of a familiar environment, in the company of family (if this is desired) and without stress or pain. “Death is a part of our lives at Cherished Pets. And we’re ok with that. It is actually a part of our purpose to support pets and people through end of life” says Dr. Kennedy. “Through our end of pet life service we provide home based guidance and care to people whose pets are in their final life phases. Whether it be a terminal illness or disorders of old age, our quality-of-life assessments enable us to create dedicated home-based pet care plans to ensure pets are comfortable and pain free through these final days, weeks, and months. We offer home hospice pet care and help people prepare for a pet’s passing.” The Cherished Pets Foundation enables support for our more vulnerable community members to keep their pets healthy, well and together with them through all life phases. including in times of crisis. They believe in the power of pets to help people maintain their independence, health and wellbeing and provide support so best friends can stay together. The Foundation supports high quality, in-home, pet care assistance for elderly and disabled pet owners living independently. They advocate for the vital role pets play in our health and wellbeing, particularly for senior citizens. The isolation felt by senior, disabled and vulnerable community members is alleviated by the companionship of a pet. Australia is a nation of pet lovers and as our population ages the need for community pet care services will grow. Supporting and promoting pet ownership for older and disabled people will help build connected and age-friendly communities for the future. We all need a best friend, however in some cases the ability of people to adequately care for their pets is compromised, not through a lack of love, but through a lack of capacity. So many animals sadly end up in animal shelters not because their owners don’t want them, but because they can’t care for them through no fault of their own.

The School of Hard Knocks I read an account recently of how a baby giraffe is born. Amazing! It goes something like this: The front hooves and head emerge first, then the entire calf appears and tumbles three metres to the ground, falling on its back. Within seconds the baby rolls over and stands, struggling to move those gangly untried legs. Then something amazing happens. The mother giraffe stands over her newborn calf and kicks it, sending it sprawling. If it doesn’t get up she kicks it again. Then once the calf is standing up, sometimes the mother deliberately knocks it over again – all to teach the baby giraffe how to stand strong enough and able to run with the herd for survival. What is the correlation for us? I must clarify I’m not advocating any sort of kicking or knocking over of our children – far from it. But it’s during hard and difficult times that we grow. We don’t like it but we learn from these times and character is developed. The mark of a successful person is their ability to see problems as opportunities instead of obstacles – to face issues with a positive mind set, calmly and with resolve – facing up to the difficulty and working through it for the good of everyone. Sometimes help from outside is needed, so please seek support where necessary. I was chatting with a student this week who was in tears, having faced up to the silly thing they had done. I congratulated them on owning up fully to their action. I encouraged them to learn from their mistake and to follow the process that was ahead with a positive mindset. The student left my office with a resolve to face what was ahead as best they could. A good example of pushing through in the hard times. All the best everyone, Kindest regards, Rob. LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500. In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club. There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club. Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions. Greater Geelong and City of Changwon Formalise Ties Councillor Trent Sullivan - Deputy Mayor “The City of Greater Geelong greatly respects Changwon City and is honoured to enter into this agreement. The Geelong region is very hopeful that this Memorandum of Understanding will bring great benefit for both regions and we believe there will be much to learn from each other. We see this is an opportunity to build a great relationship with a city that holds many similarities to ours, and that has equally high aspirations of competing on the global stage.
Greater Geelong Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan and Mayor of South Korea’s Changwon City, Mr Huh Sungmoo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two cities at a ceremony at City Hall.
The Commonwealth has also selected HDA as one of two companies to supply Land400 tanks to the Australian Defence Force, a contract worth $27 billion over 10 years.
The MOU formalises an agreement to collaborate with Changwon City on trade, education and cultural exchanges, to promote investment and employment opportunities for the two cities.
An announcement on the tender is expected this year however Hanwha has announced that its preferred location is Geelong, which would create up to 350 jobs.
Located on South Korea’s southeast coast, Changwon City is a known industrial and manufacturing hub that is home to global manufacturers including Hanwha Corporation and its subsidiary Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA). HDA will provide the Commonwealth Government’s $1-billion Land 8116 project to build and maintain heavy artillery and ammunition resupply vehicles in Geelong. City of Greater Geelong CEO Martin Cutter joined the Deputy Mayor in welcoming a delegation from Changwon City to Geelong for the signing and exchange of gifts. Hanwha Defense Corporation CEO Jaeil Sohn, Hanwha Defense Australia’s Managing Director Richard Cho and Deakin University Genevieve Reid, Director of Research Sectorial Partnerships, Government and Industry also attended the ceremony.
The Greater Geelong Council agreed to proceed with a MOU in December last year after a request from Changwon City. The agreement will be reviewed each year to assess the benefits for both cities.
This MOU aligns with the Geelong community’s 30-year vision to be internationally recognised as a ‘clever and creative’ city with a prosperous economy, that supports jobs and education opportunities.”
Mr Huh Sungmoo - Changwon City Mayor “Although the cities are physically separated by a great distance, they share similar paths and goals. I am confident our two cities’ close cooperation will contribute to advancing smarter global society. Changwon and Geelong have taken a step forward through the signing of an international friendly city agreement, and we hope that we may continue our bilateral exchanges in trade, investment, culture and tourism.”

New Tickets Added for Reusable Nappy Program Workshops Places are limited. Geelong residents with young children in nappies who have not yet attended can book a place online now. Councillor Trent Sullivan - Deputy Mayor This initiative is an important part of our goal to drive a more circular economy through diverting 100 per cent of residential waste from landfill by 2030.
Geelong parents are being given the opportunity to save money and help reduce their waste through the City’s new Modern Reusable Nappy Program. Additional tickets have now been made available for one more workshop after the program’s initial release of 400 places was snapped up within hours recently. Residents can sign up to learn how to use and launder reusable nappies, and then qualify to receive a modern reusable nappy pack from local supplier Evia Collective. Each pack contains a wet bag and five modern reusable nappies – roughly enough nappies for a full day of wear.
Nappies make up close to 10 percent of the overall waste we send to landfill from our red bins, and each nappy can take up to 500 years to break down. We’ve heard from many parents who are passionate about wanting to protect the environment for their children, and we’re excited to support Geelong families to give reusable nappies a go. One child uses an average of 6000 to 7000 disposable nappies, making up approximately one tonne of landfill waste over their nappywearing life, the equivalent weight of a car.
Councillor Belinda Moloney - Chair, Circular Economy portfolio This program is an exceptional winwin which removes many barriers and misconceptions about reusable nappies for parents, equipping them with the knowledge and nappies to try at home. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing – using a combination of half reusable and half disposable nappies in your routine will significantly reduce nappy costs and will halve your nappy waste, freeing up lots of room in your red bin and most importantly, will help reduce landfill.
Stacey Law - Evia Collective Modern reusable nappies have come a long way. Gone are the days of soaking and folding terry cloth squares. Reusable modern cloth nappies are simple to use, easy to launder, fit well and come in a range of fun colours and patterns to suit everyone. They are better for your wallet, your baby and the environment and we’d love more local families to try them.
Waste Collection Over the Easter Period There is no change to commercial or residential waste collection over the Easter period. Place your bins out the night before as usual. The Resource Centres at Drysdale and Geelong are only closed on Good Friday.

Thomson Reserve Changeroom Development Modern, fit-for-purpose changeroom facilities form part of new developments at Thomson Reserve. Female friendly and accessible changerooms will ensure that Thomson Football Netball Club and Thomson Cricket Club continue to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all. The facility is designed with an operable wall with the option for creating two smaller changerooms from one larger one. The AFL-sized changeroom features full shower and toilet cubicles, along with accessible toilet and shower. Council proudly provided $150,000 towards the development while the Victorian Government contributed $500,000 through a Sport and Recreation Victoria grant for female-friendly sporting changeroom facilities. The brand new changerooms will support the club as it continues to grow its membership and will cater for a surge in women and girls taking up football and cricket.
Cr Peter Murrihy, Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan, Cr Anthony Aitken and Cr Eddy Kontelj join Member for Geelong, Christine Couzens, and delighted members of the Thomson Football Netball Club and Thomson Cricket Club.
Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan
Councillor Peter Murrihy
This project makes the Thomson Football Netball Club and Thomson Cricket Club a place where everyone can feel comfortable, valued and safe.
The development of change facilities are welcomed, particularly considering the expansion of women’s football across the region.
Council was delighted to assist with this project because we firmly believe participation in physical activity and encouraging people to come together in sporting clubs benefits mental and physical health.
The project supports Thomson Football Netball Club in its desire to develop a female football program, a goal that was not achievable with its previous facilities.
Women’s sport has exploded in Greater Geelong in recent times, and we need to have the facilities to accommodate this growth.
The changerooms will also help in recruiting more quality talent to the sports in what is a very competitive local environment.
Member for Geelong Christine Couzens This project is vital in supporting the return of local sport. With grassroots sports back on the park, more than ever growing communities and clubs like those here in Thomson need quality facilities they can depend on. The new clubroom spaces are a great win for local sport and community and provide the perfect place for the community to reconnect and enjoy the big games. The Andrews government is proud to support the growth in female sport and provide community clubs with the facilities they deserve for their members and their community.
Rabbit Control Program Greater Geelong Director City Services Guy Wilson-Browne “The City is currently undertaking rabbit control across a number of reserves. Rabbits are recognised as Australia’s most serious pest herbivore; they destroy habitat for wildlife by preventing the growth and regeneration of native plants and impact agriculture and recreation infrastructure. We are legally required to control rabbits on land we manage, in accordance with Victoria’s Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994.” “Our rabbit control program is outlined in our Rabbit Control Plan 2021-2026. Three phases of community consultation were completed to inform the content of the plan. Our rabbit control program has also been developed using expert advice, including information provided by Agriculture Victoria and the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions.” “We use pindone responsibly, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and take necessary precautions to ensure there is minimal risk of poisoning to off-target species such as wildlife or pets.”

Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program The City of Greater Geelong is encouraging the local community to take part in the Victorian Government’s $60 million Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program. From Tuesday 29 March, diners at local restaurants, cafes, bars and other food and drink outlets will be able to claim 25 per cent off their bill through the dining program when they spend a minimum $40 between Monday and Thursday. Through the entertainment program, visitors to local cinemas, live performances, galleries, museums and more will also be able to claim 25 per cent off their bill (minimum $40 spend).
Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan
I urge the Greater Geelong community to take advantage of the program and support local. This is a statewide program and is on a first come, first served basis, so we really want to see everyone get in quickly and make the most of this offer by visiting local hospitality and entertainment venues. We thank the Victorian Government for introducing this initiative and hope to see it make a real impact in supporting Geelong’s economic recovery.
Councillor Eddy Kontelj, Chair of the Arts, Hospitality and Live Entertainment portfolio;
The state government program adds to $19.63 million in community and business support provided by the Council since the beginning of the pandemic. The program presents a great opportunity to have a fun day or night out at a discounted rate and support Greater Geelong businesses at the same time. There are so many outstanding venues in our region and they still need our help, so we’d love to see a real rush from the local community and visitors to take up this offer.
The Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program is complemented by the continuation of the City’s ‘It’s Our Backyard’ campaign, which encourages
the Greater Geelong community to ‘think local first’ when shopping, dining and choosing entertainment.

Geelong Waterfront A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront. Before the 1990s, Geelong’s waterfront was an industrial wasteland. Today, it’s one of Australia’s top waterfronts with multiple awards for design. The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, or the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront. Port Phillip Ferries are offering a service from Geelong Waterfront to the Docklands from Saturday 13 June 2020. When the weather heats up, cool off on the Waterfront at the Eastern Beach swimming promenade. Children’s pool, enclosed sea baths, diving platforms, all patrolled by lifeguards on duty during the summer months.
Poppy Kettle Playground Equipment for all ages is provided, including for over 10 years. The main feature is a unique pyramid climbing net. A favourite activity is the interactive Poppy Kettle water feature. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Precinct is located nearby.

Cunningham Pier Geelong Cunningham Pier is one of the most recognisable structures on the Geelong Waterfront. Opening in the mid-1850s it was originally known as Railway Pier. It was an important part of the Geelong Port and you can still see the train lines that were used to transport cargo to the end of the pier. The pier stretches 250 metres out over Corio Bay and its bright white building is a standout feature of the foreshore. The two-storey weatherboard building houses the Wah Bar and Asian food restaurant (bao buns!), Wah Wah Gee. The Pier Geelong function centre is also located here. A large part of this Geelong pier is dedicated to car parking and a convenient covered walkway provides shelter as you walk along the train tracks. Cunningham Pier fishing has always been popular and in keeping with tradition, local anglers continue to use it.
The Cultural Precinct The Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s oldest regional galleries with a magnificent collection of 19th and 20th century Australian and European paintings. The 1915 architecture is a temple to the arts with Greco-Roman columns and high ceilings. In contrast to the building’s classical roots, exhibitions are often cutting edge. They recently had a Rone retrospective, highlighting the work of a local street artist who has become world-renowned for his large-scale wall paintings of esoteric female faces and immersive installations exploring beauty and decay. Geelong Library and Heritage Centre tower over the gallery. The glass-clad masterpiece nicknamed “the Dome” cost $45 million and has won several architectural awards. An elevator goes to the top floor. Step out on the balcony with the pigeons, and Geelong is at your feet! Enjoy lunch at Public, a contemporary library cafe with views of the parklands.

Skate Parks In Geelong We have more skate parks per capita than any other municipality in Australia. Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets. We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events. Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong? Read about our skate program.
The Old Paper Mills Hubcaps To Creative Hubs is the title for a series of short films about creative Geelong. Hubcaps are a reminder of Ford as a major employer before pulling out in 2016. Vacant industrial spaces such as factories and wool mills have become creative villages. I stayed in a Vrbo in the Old Paper Mills (1878). In Victorian times, this bluestone mill pulped rags to make paper. The dramatic waterfall setting reminded me of the cover of George Eliot’s novel The Mill and the Floss. The present owner, Alex Robins, has lovingly restored what he refers to as an Industrial Cathedral. The old mill is a labyrinth of galleries, studios, workshops, and boutique shops with handmade goods. Enjoy a coffee at The Door Gallery Cafe surrounded by antique Indian doors. Provenance Wines has a cellar door and restaurant in the main building. Enjoy tastings matched with bite-sized food pairings. Rone painted one of his famous esoteric faces on the back wall. As street art is so transient, it’s great to see a lasting testament to his work.

Western Beach Geelong People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s. In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.
Rippleside Park Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

Steampacket Gardens Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee. A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing. On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel. There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork. The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats. You can read about other popular Geelong markets here.
The Carousel Geelong Carousel The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 ArmitageHerschell hand-carved wooden carousel. One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today. Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies. A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction. Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

REBIRTH YOURSELF
In particular, as your clients share similar interests to yourself, you’ll find that, over time, your clients will become friends.
RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly MBA
Once you exit the paid workforce, don’t bother trying to find another job. Why? Well the elephant in the room are those workplace health and safety insurance policies, which can frequently exclude any employee aged over 70. Consequently, for modern elders, second career options can be rather limited. However, self-employment is a viable alternative and developing a “profitable hobby” is perhaps the best route. This form of self-employment multiple benefits, including • • •
offers
the income expanding your friendship network maintaining your zest for living
And because it is a hobby, it’s not work. It’s something that you enjoy. On the other hand, as it is a hobby, something enjoyable that you do parttime, don’t expect that it will generate a substantial income (although it may well do). So the associated benefits are probably more important.
For xample, if you were selling dog collars, your conversations would evolve naturally into all things doggy, and a friendship would emerge. HOW TO START If you’ve never been in business for yourself previously, you can ease yourself into the game by buying and selling something simple. Let’s consider flower presses. These are traditional gifts that young children give as birthday presents, and you can buy these in quantity from haberdashery stores. And then you sell them online. However, you’ll find “success” with this venture if you focus on desperate parents who need – urgently – a gift for next Saturday’s birthday party. These parents are typically uber-busy, and stressed, and willing to pay whatever you ask – as long as you guarantee rapid next day dispatch. To them, price is not the concern. Service delivery is the critical component of the sale.
Some options to make it easy for desperate parents to find you is to (1) build your own (free) Google website – name it Last Minute Children’s Gifts – and they will find you. And of course, you would (2) also list “flower presses” as a free advertisement on various sites such as eBay and Marketplace. The key is to emphasise your solution to a parent’s desperation. DOUBLE YOUR SALES Now flower presses are educational toys, so consider marketing a package of two (in each sale): • •
one as the gift the other to remain with their family

Find Retirement with Ease and Enjoy it FINANCIAL PLANNING By Warren Strybosch
Social Security rates increase Social Security pension and allowance rates increased on 20 March 2022 as a result of indexation. The following tables summarise the latest rates and cut-off thresholds for pension payments (eg Age Pension, Service Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment).
Step 1: Start thinking about retirement regardless of your age I don’t know what the magic number is for retirement. In the past it used to be age 65 which fell in line with when you could apply for the Age Pension. Now that the Age Pension has increased to age 67, we are starting to see a shift and pre-retirees are starting to talk about age 67 as the new magic number. There are still some self-funded retirees who like the idea of retiring at age 65 or even soon, given they won’t qualify for the Age Pension, but for most others, the trend is moving upwards in age and retiring later. Regardless of the age, we encourage everyone over the age of 55 to start thinking about their pending retirement and to consider taking ‘mini-retirements’ now rather than waiting until fully retired. I will speak more about ‘mini-retirements’ in the next edition. Ideally, we want our clients to consider retirement even earlier than age 55 but as we all know, with the pressures of a mortgage, kids, school fees, and so on, it is hard for most people to give retirement any thought until their later years. When we say consider it, we mean to start planning for it. The sooner you start putting a strategy in place, the better off you will financially be in retirement. Regardless of your age, it is important to give retirement some consideration for the simple fact that superannuation is now capped. What do I mean by capped? The government changed the laws in 2009 to reduce the amount someone could contribute into superannuation in a given year. Currently the two main caps are the Concessional Cap (CC) of $27, 500 and the Non-Concessional Cap (NCC) of $110,000. Now that there are restrictions placed on how much can be placed into super each year, everyone needs to consider what amount above the Superannuation Guarantee Contribution (SGC), currently 10%, should be placed into superannuation, at least up to the $27,500. There are other caps but for now we are concentrating on the two most common ones. The benefit of placing additional funds into super, especially when interest rates are low, is that for every additional $1000 you place into Super up to the CC, assuming you earn more than $45,000, is that
you are saving yourself approximately 17.5% or more in tax (marginal tax rate of 32.5% less 15% tax in super = 17.5%). That is a 17.5% return without having to think about it. Then that 17.5% return is going to be working for you and is likely to return more than your current loan interest each year. I tend to look at this way. If I can get a return that is at least three times better than the current interest rate I am paying on my home loan, and with the large initial return of 17.5% (that tax savings in the first year), I may consider placing more funds into super rather than placing more money onto my mortgage. With interest rates being so low, I like the idea of placing more funds into super but as interest rates rise, I will have to reconsider this approach. Even if you do have a mortgage but you’re earning a bucket load of money and want to reduce tax, the first thing you should be doing, before anything else, is making sure you are maxing out your CCs. I often tell my clients to keep things as simple as possible. Do the simple, less risky things first, before venturing into higher risk or larger debt investments. The two simple things anyone can do is a) max out their CC for themselves and if they have a partner, do the same for them, and b) make sure you have enough personal insurances in place to protect you, your family, and the assets you are building up. I will talk about personal insurances in a future edition – and I don’t mean just take out default cover in an industry fund. That type of advice is out of date and will likely you cost you more over the long term.
What is interesting, is that anyone young, who starts to implement the above, will have a considerable amount in retirement that they might not need to have to do anything else. Starting early is the key. The sooner you start the better your superannuation balance will be. When the simple things have been done then we can discuss other ways to make money and save on tax. There are plenty of options but as you will learn, they come with a lot more risk. In my next edition we will talk about spending plans, future goals, and minretirements.
