About the Find Geelong

The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free.

We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.

We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.

To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you.

Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate.

Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing.

We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

Preparing your pets for holidays

Are you getting ready for a longawaited holiday? You probably have plenty of preparation and planning to do, especially if you have pets. Whether taking your pet with you or leaving it with a trusted caregiver, there is still much to take care of.

Travelling with your pet

If you are travelling by car, you should make sure that you have everything you need to make your pet comfortable. Some things you will want to keep close by include:

• Your pet’s leash

• Bags for waste/bathroom stops

• Food

• Water

• A favourite toy

Your pet should be wearing a collar or harness with up-to-date tags on it. Having your pet microchipped is wise, also.

If you happen to be travelling with a cat, you may want to keep them in a carrier or crate. Cats typically won’t eat, drink, or use a litter box while on the road. They will probably wait until you reach your destination.

When travelling by air, you will need to contact the airline ahead of time. Each airline has specific guidelines that must be followed, and forms that need to be filled out in advance.

Boarding for your pet

If you are planning to leave your pet in a boarding facility, start looking for the perfect place as early as possible. Visit the facility by yourself first, and then, when you find one you like, bring your pet for a visit if possible. This way your pet isn’t going to a completely unfamiliar place when you leave. You will also get a chance to see how the staff and your pet interact before the holiday begins.

Things to look for include:

• Friendly staff

• Cleanliness

• Living quarters with ample space for the pets

• Outside areas for pets to play if the weather permits

• Do the animals look happy?

• Do animals have fresh water?

• What policies are in place in case of an emergency?

In-home pet sitter

You may prefer having someone come to, or stay at, your home. If this is the case, you will want to interview potential pet sitters. Handle these interviews much like you would if you were hiring for a professional position.

• Ask for references and check them

• Watch the potential sitter interact with your pet

• Ask how they would handle an emergency

• Be clear about your expectations

Once you have chosen your pet sitter, be sure you provide them with a schedule to follow. Also, give them information on how to contact you and your veterinarian.

Whether your pet comes with you on your holiday or stays behind, you will want to be sure to take plenty of time to make appropriate arrangements. Your holidays will be much more enjoyable when you go into them with the peace of mind that comes from knowing your pet is having all its’ needs met and is safe. Your pet will appreciate it too.

4 FIND GEELONG | JANUARY 2023 www.findgeelong.com.au

Welcome to 2023.

As Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong I look forward to another exciting year for our region, one that I hope will be full of further great achievements.

On that front, last month we marked the first anniversary of our switch to renewable energy for all of our electricity use.

This has helped cut our carbon emissions by about 30 per cent, and reduced the cost of powering our facilities by 25 per cent.

Alongside this, we’re about two-thirds of the way through converting all of our streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs.

Last year we introduced the first fully electric vehicles to our fleet, and extended our household food organic collection trial in Lara, as we prepare to offer it to all homes in the coming years.

All of this means our ambitious sustainability goals –to have carbon neutral operations by 2025, and see net zero community emissions by 2035 – are gathering pace.

It is exciting to reflect on this achievement as we move into 2023, knowing we have much to build on after an amazing year last year.

For example, we took out the International Smart City of the Year award, which was held in Korea. What made this even more remarkable was that we won the award alongside Barcelona City.

When you think that Barcelona has a population of 1.6 million within its city limits, it is a special achievement on the international stage.

That award was a great recognition for the joint work that has been done by Council, the private sector, the education sector and other levels of Government, to create a more liveable, sustainable and thriving city.

As a Council we have achieved so much in this space, and I look forward to seeing the continued progress we make in the coming years.

Geelong Column

On behalf of council, I wish you all a safe and prosperous 2023.

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

(and how to help make them come true)

Whether New Year’s resolutions involve losing weight, eating healthier, exercising more, paying off debt, reducing time spent on social media, travelling or something else.

Making New Year’s resolutions is fantastic, but it means nothing until you actually follow through. This means that the most significant New Year’s resolution of all is to ensure you fulfil the promises you’ll be making to yourself. But how do you do this?

Here are the top 10 New Year’s resolutions and tips on how you can make them come true.

Top New Year’s resolutions

Year after year, the top 10 New Year’s resolutions remain fairly consistent, with a lot of people having more or less the same items on their list. The reason: very few people actually achieve them.

Are these resolutions difficult? Check out the list (with variations included) below.

1. Get healthier (or lose weight or exercise more). 2. Save (more) money (or spend less).

3. Learn something new (a new skill, language or hobby). 4. Get organised. 5. Land a new job (or start a new career). 6. Quit smoking. 7. Spend more time with loved ones (or friends and family). 8. Fight climate change (or global warming). 9. Read more books. 10. Travel more.

Some people add ‘live life to the fullest’ to their list, but that’s not included here as it’s a very general resolution. It’s also a bit vague because the notion of a fulfilling life varies from person to person.

Now, back to the list.

What do you think makes achieving all or most of the top 10 New Year’s resolutions so challenging?

Tips to follow through on your New Year’s resolutions

If any of your (old and new) resolutions for the coming year are on the above list, then you’ll surely find the following tips quite useful in making them come true.

• Publicise your New Year’s resolutions.

• Limit your New Year’s resolutions to one or two things.

• Ensure your resolutions are clear and specific.

• Take slow but resolute steps.

• Stay optimistic throughout.

• Commit to the process.

• Push yourself.

• Give yourself mini rewards.

In life, it’s crucial to set objectives and work toward achieving them.

But if the year ends with you not completing them all, there’s no need to berate yourself.

After all, there’s always next year, right?

Tuning into our senses is an important way to unwind and unplug from the busyness of life

NATURE

This is the fourth of five publications where we are running a series of sensory experiences in nature.

Each experience will take about 10 mins and you are encouraged to read through the instructions before you commence your time in nature to maximise your experience.

Find a spot outside where you can sit or lie down comfortably. This could be in your backyard, your local reserve or in a national park. You may like the familiarity of the same place you have practised before or you may like to try somewhere new.

Take a few moments to regulate your breathing and settle into your position.

We are going to practise ‘belly’ breathing in this exercise.

Put one hand on your belly.

Breathe in through your nose and feel the air moving through your nostrils and expanding your stomach, feeling your hand moving.

Breathe out and feel your stomach gently contracting to push the air out and your hand return to its original position.

If helpful, put your other hand on your chest to ensure that it isn’t moving.

Do this for a couple of minutes.

Relax your hands and allow your breath to continue naturally.

If you are comfortable, shut your eyes. If not, focus on a spot down in front of you. For the next 5 mins, tune in to what you can observe with your sense of smell.

Take some breaths and notice what you can smell?

Is there moisture in the air that you can smell? Pollen?

Can you smell the scent of flowers, leaves etc?

Pause for a moment and allow your sense of smell to take all of your attention. If you wish, touch some leaves, the earth, flowers and enjoy each individual smell for several moments. Do this from where you are positioned or move very slowly to a place where you can experience different smells.

Ensure that you pause for a minute or so with each smell.

Allow your sense of smell to become larger.

If your mind gets distracted, just draw your thoughts and attention back to what you are smelling.

Try to stay focused and enjoy the experience of tuning into your sense of smell.

When you choose to complete your experience, you may wish to take a moment of gratitude for nature and for the experience you have just had.

Trust distributions

- be very careful who you distribute to

ACCOUNTANT

One of the biggest tax topics for 2022 relates to trust distributions. In the past, clients who owned a discretion trust or family trust, could distribute income to another company, trust, or adult children without attracting any attention from the ATO. However, the ATO, has cracked down on who can receive distributions and it does not bode for many trustees. Trustees will need to understand the ATO’s position on trust distributions, more specifically, 100A of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 (ITAA 1936) and Taxation Ruling TR 2022/4 and the Practical Compliance Guidance PCG 2022/2 (Section 100A reimbursement agreements – ATO compliance approach) which the ATO clarified and confirmed its position on the 8th of December 2022.

The guidance issued by the ATO under TR 2022/4 and PCG 2022/2 is comprehensive and details several commonly encountered situations with trust arrangements. The key message is that the ATO’s core compliance approach to s100A will depend on where on a trust arrangement sits on the ATO’s three-coloured risk framework. Each zone in this risk framework represents a risk rating and denotes the level of ATO engagement that can be expected by trustees for their trust arrangement. Whilst the ATO’s approach is a softer one compared to their draft rulings released in February 2022, the manner in which income distributed to a corporate or adult beneficiary based on these new frameworks may still potentially attract ATO scrutiny regarding current and previously set up trust arrangements.

Whilst the TR 2022/4 focuses on the 4 basic requirements of s100A, the accompanying PCG 2022/2 outlines the ATO’s confirmed guidance on how it will assess trust arrangements for the potential application of s100A.

The ATO will be differentiating and managing risk for a range of trust arrangements based on which of the 3 zones a trust arrangement falls in:

1. White (low risk)– applied to pre-1 July 2004 arrangements.

2. Green (low risk) – covers several common familial scenarios including receipt of the entitlement within 2 years and the trustee’s retention of funds and ordinary dealings.

3. Red – these are high-risk trust arrangements that include but are not limited to the circular flow of funds between a corporate beneficiary and trust which is a shareholder, as well as arrangements where entitlement to income has been ‘gifted’ back to the trustee (or a parent) or otherwise forgiven.

At this stage it is important to note two important differences between the previously drafted PCG 2022/D1 and the newly issued PCG 2022/2:

The number of zones in the risk framework has been reduced from 4 to 3 with the blue zone now removed.

The green zone has been expanded and is still considered to be low risk.

It is important that trustees try to understand where their trust arrangements sit in these zones. As such, the ATO has provided more practical examples to assist trustees to understand if they fall within one of

the zones that might attract the ATO’s attention e.g., green or red zones. There are several examples set out in PCG 2022/2, however, the ATO’s consensus is that it will not dedicate compliance resources to white-zoned arrangements.

Green zone arrangements will not attract ATO scrutiny in terms of considering the applicability of s100A, rather resources will be deployed to confirm that the trust arrangement meets the green zone features.

Being high-risk, red zone arrangements will be the focus of the ATO’s scrutiny with a strong level of engagement and deployment of resources expected.

PCG 2022/2 will have application both before and after its date of issue, however, for entitlements arising before 1 July 2022 the Commissioner will uphold his position in Trust Taxation – reimbursement agreement, issued in July 2014, to the extent that it is more favourable to the taxpayers circumstances than PCG 2022/2.

For those trustees with complex trust structure set ups it is advisable to seek advice from an accountant or lawyer that specialises in this area.

Benefits of working with a coach

There is a high possibility you have heard about coaching and all the good stuff.

Over the last few years, coaches, especially performance coaches, have become very popular. People are training on how to be mentally strong in the gym, business, career, and almost any other life spectrum that comes to mind.

But what is all the fuss about? Why are people adopting a coaching lifestyle?

Many people say they do not need coaches, and they are right. No one does. You have got to want to have a coach. However, to do that, you need to compare the advantages and disadvantages of having one.

First off, coaching is a precious thing to offer yourself or your organisation. Although some may find disadvantages too, the pros by far outweigh the cons. People working with a coach have natural, tangible, and profound results that will draw you toward wanting to have one.

If coaching wasn’t an effective strategy, why would sports teams spend millions of their budget on hiring a coach? Also, consider all the expenses that come with a technical bench, including coaching assistants.

Why would anyone invest so much in something that hasn’t been proven to work? However, they do because coaching provides irrefutable results.

All in all, let’s start by answering the most obvious question, Who is a coach?

A coach trains a person or team to unlock their potential and achieve a certain target. Coaching is almost similar to mentorship but a little different in that it is more performance-driven and evaluative than mentoring.

So, why is it important to work with a coach?

Everyone has the power within themselves that needs to be unleashed. They may not even be aware of it. A coach’s job is to help you let it out. A coach gives you the extra nudge and support you need to make it happen.

Let’s face it. Life is hard as it is. Any additional pressure from work, friendships,

parenting, or whatever else you’ve got happening in your life makes it harder to shoulder all the weight. Although it’s possible to move on feeling overwhelmed, your personal life is bound to spiral downward. Your good habits falter, and you end up failing.

That’s where a coach comes in.

A good coach helps lift the weight off you. Coaches answer your difficult questions and help you see things from a fresh perspective. They help you visualise and actualise new possibilities outside your comfort zone to create a better version of yourself.

Some people know exactly what they want in life, when and how to get it. However, a big chunk of the population does not have a clear perspective of who they are, what they are capable of, or how to shape their future. A good coach will help you make sense of your life, current situation, and future.

Although coaching sessions are different, they all have one thing in common: problem-solving. You may struggle with something you can’t point the finger at for a while. However, a coach will listen to you with utmost keenness; help you by asking the right questions to unearth

10 FIND GEELONG | JANUARY 2023 www.findgeelong.com.au

How Can Coaches Help Organisations?

Whoever introduced coaches in workplaces was right to do so.

Some organisations implement coaching programs that introduce thirdparty coaches to guide their employees through their career journeys. These coaches help teams prioritise tasks, set clear and achievable goals, and solidify their values, all for general workplace improvement.

However, it is not all about improvement in their work life. Such employees benefit personally from a coach by:

* Gaining personal life perspective.

* Having a deeper understanding of themselves.

* Taking responsibility and being accountable for actions and commitments.

* Becoming more self-reliant.

* Communicating more effectively.

* Increasing the level of engagement with others.

Coaching junior members in an organisation helps bring up future leaders by cultivating hidden leadership qualities. Executives also learn to manage stress and improve their leadership quality for the better of the organisation through coaching.

Companies with coaching programs have improved customer and employee retention, profitability, customer satisfaction, and talent acquisition. A professional coach wholesomely helps build a brand and company.

If you wish to replicate any of the above results, consider working with a coach in any area of operation. If what you expect is a revamped team, culture, and improved performance, get in touch with me, I’m always happy to have a chat –sally@team-resilience.com.au

VIDEO PRODUCTION

A great story or video often hinges on an interviewee and the way they deliver the required responses, the questions that have been asked to that interviewee, the execution of the video production team on the day of filming, and the actual crafting of the storyline by the producer or director and the editing of the visuals.

Engaging storytelling is an art form and frequently gets forgotten about in the world of corporate videos. A great story can engage new customers or

audiences, inspire them to reach out and also help them to understand if your values as a company or not-forprofit align with theirs.

There are subtle nuances that can be seen in a video that aren’t usually seen in a meeting, brochure or flyer. The camera sees and hears all! From how your staff or team appear in their interviews, body language, work environment down to what is in the background of a shot in the distance.

These things are just as important as what is being said and can really change how a customer or the audience sees your business.

5 key things to consider when putting your initial video ideas together:

1. What is your ethos / or mantra that you live and breathe?

2. How do you want to be seen by your clients and the public?

3. Is there something unique about what you do or even how your company or not-for-profit is different?

4. Type / style of video for youPromotional, Corporate, Testimonial, Animation etc

5. And here’s the big one… are you willing to spend money to showcase your business or not-for-profit?

Cost can be a major factor in your decision-making process when deciding to make a video but “cheap is not always better”, especially in the world of video production.

Remember, do your research, find a company that meets your needs and budget, and ask for guidance if you need help or have never made a video before. If you ask questions and don’t get a great response you’ll know quickly that the company is not right for your needs.

Video production can be a little daunting but from past experience when you find a team that works and really gets you and your company or not-for-profit it can be a fun journey together.

In the coming issues, I will be offering more tips and tricks in regards to how you can utilises video to help build your social media and brand presence.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

make it so much more affordable. With regard to PHEV models, one of the amendments is that these vehicles will cease to be exempt from FBT after 1 April 2025, although any existing exemption on these vehicles will continue until the end of the arrangement, i.e. end of the Novated Lease period.

What does the exemption NOT include?

The exemption does not extend to vehicles that are not considered to be a ‘car’ under the current FBT legislation, i.e. vehicles designed to carry greater than one tonne or more, or nine passengers or more.

SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES

It’s good news if you’re planning on leasing an electric vehicle. To support the budget and the environment, the federal government has recently introduced legislation that makes electric vehicles (EVs) priced under $84,916 exempt from fringe benefits tax (FBT).

If you’re considering a novated lease, a new Electric or Low Emission Vehicle is an even smarter investment.

Electric vehicles will already save you a considerable amount on fuel and have lower overall running costs because of fewer mechanical moving parts. Add the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption and you can potentially save around 40% off the cost price.

What it means is that in comparison to a vehicle with an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), when you salary package a Low Emission vehicle through a Novated Lease, there is no FBT.

Vehicles that are exempt from FBT

The Government have limited the exemption to the following vehicle types:

• Battery Electric Vehicles (e.g. Tesla models, Nissan Leaf, MG ZS EV)

• Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (New models from Toyota & Hyundai are coming in 2023)

• Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) (e.g. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Hyundai Ioniq PHEV, KIA Niro PHEV)

When does it start?

The legislation will apply retrospectively from 1 July 2022 to vehicles first held and used by a person on or after 1 July 2022.

Even though the vehicle will be exempt from FBT, there will be a Reportable Fringe Benefit Amount (RFBA) on your Income Statement when it is issued at the end of the Financial Year. This may have an impact if you are claiming Government Benefits or paying a HECS/HELP debt.

A Novated Lease on an eligible vehicle can include all of the running costs for the vehicle, including Service & Maintenance, Tyre Replacement, Registration Renewal, Comprehensive Insurance and even recharging costs (Electricity).

With all things considered, a Novated Lease on a new Electric or Low Emission vehicle could save you thousands and

The exemption does not include Hybrid vehicles such as Camry, Corolla, RAV4, etc.

Remember vehicles can be salary packaged using a novated lease by any employee regardless of the industry, with employer consent.

are you owed money? recovering Debts

LAWYERS

There are a number of reasons why someone may owe you money – you or your company may have performed a service and your invoice was never paid, you may have lent a friend or a family member money and were never repaid, it could even be that your tenants haven’t paid their rent or your boss owes you wages. Whatever the reason, the fact is that you are owed money, and there are ways to get it back.

If you have unsuccessfully attempted to resolve the issue and collect your debt, the next step is to consult with a lawyer. Now, meeting with a lawyer does not always mean you are going to have to go to court. By consulting a lawyer, you will be able to tell your story and in response, your lawyer will be able to advise where you stand and what avenues are available to progress your matter forward.

Where to start?

Generally, when a client walks in to the office and say they are owed money we ask, how much are you owed? The amount you are owed will help determine what avenues will be available to you. For example, you wouldn’t take a $100 debt to court because, the court fees would outweigh the debt owed. On the other hand, if you are owed $100,000, then that is definitely worth pursuing.

Letter of Demand

When you engage a lawyer they will start with the basics, and that is to send the person owing money a letter of demand, which is exactly what it sounds like.

A letter of demand is a letter sent by your lawyer to the person owing a debt, explaining that they owe money and why they owe money. The letter will detail the debt owed and provide the relevant invoices (if any) and where there is evidence beyond invoices that illustrate

a debt is owed, then we will discuss this evidence in the letter as well. Finally, at the end of the letter we demand payment within a specified period and depending on the client’s instructions, we advise that we are willing to take the matter further if a prompt payment is not received.

Sometimes we receive payment immediately and other times we receive a response advising that the person owing money does not have the capacity to pay the full amount immediately, which can usually be resolved with a payment plan. In the event that the debt is not payed after sending the letter of demand and we receive no response, this is when we discuss the next steps.

In the event that the money owed is in dispute, and the person owing money doesn’t believe they do or they believe they owe less than claimed, there is the option to attend mediation where the parties get the opportunity to resolve their dispute without commencing proceedings in the court and spending a lot of time and money.

Initiating Proceedings

In the event that a letter of demand or mediation fails, it is usually time to consider initiating proceedings with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) or the Magistrates or County Court (depending on the amount of money owed).

VCAT

VCAT is the less formal option to court which means it is an avenue that you can take without having a lawyer. The VCAT process is simplified to allow parties to file their matter independently, and it is also the cheaper option. However, VCAT is limited on the types of disputes it can help with therefore, depending on your dispute, VCAT may not be capable of hearing it. Although lawyers are not required in VCAT proceedings, if you do wish to be represented or need help with the documentation, you are able to engage a lawyer.

Magistrates/County Court

Whether you commence proceedings to recover debt in the Magistrates Court or the County Court depends on the amount of money that is in question. The Magistrates Court only have the jurisdiction to hear matters concerning $100,000 or less, if the debt owed exceeds $100,000, you will be required to file in the County Court. Although commencing proceedings in court can be expensive, you do have the opportunity to claim legal costs, which means some of your legal fees could be paid for you where the court makes such order, this is something your lawyer will explain to you before you make the decision to file.

What happens if the court orders payment of the debt, but they still haven’t paid?

Unfortunately, there is a risk that even though you were successful in court and the person owing you money was ordered to pay it back, they may still not pay it. Generally, if a person is refusing to pay their debt despite an order to the contrary, it is often because they do not have the money to pay the debt. While this is not ideal, there are further options to address this situation that include payment plans and warrants to seize property.

Conclusion

The process of securing a debt owed to you can be a very straight forward matter, or it can be complicated with a range of different things to consider.

At Van Beveren Lawyers, we will meet with you to discuss your money disputes and find the right pathway for your situation. We will discuss all the possibilities that each avenue provides and their pros and cons.Van Beveren Lawyers are experience when it comes to debt recovery and one of our friendly staff members will be more than happy to assist you recover your debt.

There are many wood surfaces inside a building that need painting. Skirting boards, dados, architraves, window frames picture rails, feature timber walls and furniture – all require different painting technique to plaster walls.

Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving a smooth, painted finish.

1. Cover work surface

Spread plastic sheeting on the floor around the to-be-painted area so it doesn’t get splashed on. Laying newspaper or canvas on top of the plastic will stop you slipping on the plastic beneath and also soaks up paint spills.

2. Prepare wooden surface

Don rubber gloves and goggles or glasses to protect your hands and eyes. Mix a solution of water and TSP, sugar soap or borax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip a cloth in the solution, squeeze dry and wipe all surfaces to be painted. Rinse with another cloth dipped in clear, warm water. Let the timber dry completely.

Now check for any holes, gouges, nicks or scratches. Fill them in with wood filler using a flexible putty knife.

3.

PAINTING SURFACES WOODEN

7. Clean again

Use a vacuum cleaner and cloth as before to wipe away the dust.

8. Paint the surface

Sand the surface

Don a dust mask or respirator and hearing protection. Sand the timber flat areas with a random orbital sander and 200–280 grit sandpaper. This helps the wooden surface to bond with the paint. Sanding by hand is better for uneven surfaces such as you find on furniture.

4.

Clean off dust

Using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove the dust and wipe with a damp cloth.

5. Prime wooden surface

Mix your primer well and apply with a brush or roller. When it has dried, check to see if the primer is transparent or streaky; if so, apply the primer a second time. A roller will prime a flat surface more quickly and leave it with a smoother finish.

6. Sand again

Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand down the dry surface again. Apply light pressure so that gouges don’t form.

Foam-density rollers are useful for painting large surfaces. Insert a paint tray liner into the paint tray, then pour in paint so that it fills the tray less than halfway. Gently dab the roller into the paint and roll the paint up and down the slope of the tray a few times to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. Roll the paint lightly onto the wooden surface. A high-density foam roller gives better coverage with thinner latex paint than with oil-based paints.

Paintbrushes are better for fiddlier jobs like window frames and furniture. Insert the bristles of the brush into the paint can just a third of their length each time you need more paint. Once on the wooden surface, stroke the brush in a parallel direction to the wood grain. Use short strokes. Keep a wet edge at all times so that you don’t leave overlapping marks.

For a more professional appearance, you could try spraying the surface rather than using a paint brush.

Do not be tempted to apply a second coat of paint after this coat has dried, as this will cause the paint to tear.

9. Sand the first coat

The way to achieve a smoother finish is to sand and paint one more time. When the first coat has dried, sand as before. This

will flatten any bumps or inconsistencies introduced by the roller or paintbrush.

Gently sand by hand with 220-grit sandpaper. If using an orbital sander, attach the sandpaper and run it as lightly as possible over the surface. Do not apply any other weight except that of the sander itself.

After sanding, bunch up a cloth. Keeping it loose, run it lightly over the surface. If you apply too much pressure, the cloth‘s surface may embed itself onto the wood.

10. Apply a second coat of paint

Apply a second coat with the roller or brush, and let dry, preferably overnight. Paint is more durable the longer it is left to dry.

PROTECTING FAMILIES FROM 'HEALTH POVERTY'

FINANCIAL

Poverty is not just a financial measure –it can also affect health. But life insurance can help manage the risks.

More than 40% of Australians report such low levels of physical and mental wellbeing that they are defined as living in ‘health poverty’, according to new research.

It suggests many Australians are unaware of the risks they face given life and disability insurance levels continue to decline.

The comprehensive analysis by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) assessed more than 30,000 Australians’ views of their health across physical function, role function, social function, pain, mental health, and vitality.

“Our investigations of what aspects of health were contributing to health poverty suggests lack of role functioning and vitality were the most important elements,” the report found.

“They account for much of the change over time, the differences between groups, and the differences in trends between groups.”

While there are measures of poverty across several aspects of life, there is no established measure of health poverty, according to the report.

According to the CEPAR measure, the rate of health poverty fell between 2001 and 2009, but then quickly climbed again, in line with rising diabetes and drug-induced deaths.

Women and Indigenous Australians more at risk

The research found specific groups, including women and Indigenous Australians, were more at risk of health poverty.

Around 44% of women suffered from health poverty in 2001 compared to 40% of men. The gap grew larger (33% for men and 40% for women) by 2010, with women’s health poverty continuing to get worse, reaching a record high of 46% in 2018.

Indigenous Australians were also at risk, suffering extreme rates of health poverty of more than 60% by 2018.

While older Australians tend to have more health problems, the health poverty gap between older and younger people narrowed over the last two decades.

Underinsurance and health poverty

The report shows many Australians are at risk of health poverty, yet actuarial firm Rice Warner (recently merged with PwC) estimated Australians were underinsured by $1.8 trillion in 2017.

And the gap has widened. Rice Warner’s 2020 analysis revealed that the total sum insured has decreased by 17% and 19% for death and TPD cover respectively over the previous two years.

The table below estimates the actual average level of death and TPD insurance that 30 and 50-year-old parents need.

(The amount is lower for older parents as they have less time until retirement, lower expected debt, higher super savings, and spend less time looking after children.)

Table: Average insurance need per parent

Stay Hydrated This Summer

NATUROPATH

In the hot weather our fluid requirements increase and whilst just plain water is usually all that’s required, here are some healthy options to replace soft drinks, bubble teas, and smoothies which often contain mostly sugars.

Iced water

If you don’t like it plain, experiment with adding 1 or more of the following to give it a bit of flavour: lemon or lime juice, cucumber, berries, ginger (place fresh slice or powdered in a little boiling water and allow to steep, then add cold water and ice). Berries can be added to ice blocks before freezing, then placed in drinks.

Iced Matcha

Matcha is green tea powder and whilst it can give you a caffeine hit, it is also high

in antioxidants and studies show many health benefits. Be sure to buy unsweetened matcha, then add ¼ tsp to a little boiling water, whisk, fill glass with cold water and ice. Drink it as it is or add fresh lemon juice or mint leaves to flavour.

Smoothie

This smoothie is actually a meal as it contains protein and fats as well as fruit and makes a great summer breakfast. If you’re short of time in the morning, you can make it the night before and store it in the fridge.

• 1 piece (or 1 cup) fruit such as banana, apple or berries

• ½ cup nuts and seeds, or ¼ cup natural protein powder

• 1 tab coconut oil, macadamia oil, or ½ avocado

• ½ cup leafy green vegetables such as kale, silverbeet, spinach or celery

• ½ cup other vegetables such as carrot or cucumber

• Spices for flavour, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, cacao or lemon juice

• Top with milk, plant milk or water and blend.

To change it up, try making a smoothie bowl, by placing your smoothie in a bowl and topping with fresh fruit nuts and seeds.

2023 TAX

Sharing economy reporting system to be implemented

Starting from 1 July 2023, operators of sharing economy platforms will be required to report transactional information to the ATO. The Taxable Payments Reporting System already applies to some businesses in industries where non-compliance is deemed to be high risk. By adding operators of sharing economy platforms to the regime, taxpayers who hold or use assets for short-term lease or contract work will have their information collected.

The identification of users of sharing economy platforms means that, as an adviser, you should be informing taxpayers who earn income off these platforms of their tax obligations. This includes short-term accommodation, ride-sharing transport and food delivery platforms. Also, other task or time-based service platforms will be required to report for income years beginning on 1 July 2024. The start date of the proposed changes have been delayed after the former Bill was prorogued at the last federal election.

Digital games tax offset set to become legislation

First announced in May 2021, the digital games tax offset (DGTO) has received the green light from the Labor government to be implemented as legislation in the coming months. The DGTO is aimed at giving a boost to the digital economy as well as the digital gaming industry in Australia. This offset will allow eligible businesses to claim a refundable tax offset of up to 30% on qualifying Australian gaming development expenditure. The offset (currently draft legislation) will be implemented through amendments to the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 through the creation of a new Div 378.

Changes to pension tests for downsizers

Age pensioners and income recipients are set to benefit from a change in rules to the eligibility tests in relation to their principal home. Changes to the assets test and income test will provide greater flexibility for homeowners to downsize or more into a property that better suits their needs. The intention of the changes is so pensioners and income recipients have more time to decide their next course of action when it comes to housing without any penalty to their support payments and entitlements.

ATO to have power to make small businesses undertake tax education course

The Commissioner of Taxation will be given new powers to direct a taxpayer to undertake a record-keeping education course in lieu of an administrative penalty. The new directive will be initially limited to small business owners in order to assist them in keeping up to date with tax obligations. The individual must then provide the Commissioner with evidence of completion of the course in order to avoid financial penalty. The new directive will be available after the Bill receives Royal Assent.

Small business technology investment boost

A business with an aggregated turnover of less than $50 million will be entitled to a 20% bonus deduction for expenditure relating to a digital business adoption.

The bonus deduction will be available for expenditure incurred from 7:30pm (AEDT) on 29 March 2022 (2022 Federal Budget night) until 30 June 2023.

Eligible deductions are limited to an annual cap of $100,000, which can be claimed by a business on both business expenses and depreciating assets simultaneously.

TAX UPDATES

Electric vehicles now exempt from FBT

An employer who provides an employee with an electric vehicle will not be liable for fringe benefits tax on the employee’s private use. The new legislation comes into effect for electric vehicle first held by employers on or after 1 July 2022.

To be eligible for the exemption, the electric vehicle must be below the luxury car limit, which is currently sitting at $84,916.

The exemption provides a viable option for employees to reduce their tax bill by salary packaging.

Small business skills and training boost

Small businesses will get a bonus tax deduction on top of the allowable deduction for training their employees.

Businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $50 million will be entitled to claim a 120% deduction for eligible expenditure. Eligible expenditure refers to external training courses delivered to a business’s employees by a registered training organisation in Australia.

The skills and training boost is available from 7:30pm (AEDT) on 29 March 2022 until 30 June 2024.

Downsizer contributions to superannuation

Downsizer contributions have been available to members of complying superannuation funds since 1 July 2018. From that date, a person aged 65 years or older has been able to make a contribution up to $300,000 from the proceeds of selling their main residence. A legislative amendment originally from the 2021 Federal Budget reduced the age limit from 65 to 60 from 1 July 2022.

Further, another legislative amendment by the federal government from August 2022 has reduced the age limit again from 60 to 55. The change will come into effect on the day the Bill receives royal assent. To be eligible to make a downsizer contribution, an individual must have owned their main residence for at least 10 years. It is available to both members of a couple for the same home, even if only one is on the title deed.

Downsizer contributions are in addition to existing rules and caps and are exempt from the: age test, and $1.7 million total superannuation balance test for making non-concessional contributions.

Self-education removal of deduction limitation

Individuals will now have the ability to claim a higher deduction for self-education expenses. From the 2022–23 income year, legislation that limited the self-education deduction to costs above $250 each income year has been repealed.

In order to claim a self-education deduction, an individual must demonstrate a necessary connection of the expense with their assessable income.

The announcement originally came from the 2021 Federal Budget and is somewhat related to a Treasury discussion paper released in December 2020. However, other matters addressed in the paper, such as deductions for expenses unrelated to current employment, have not been taken further at this stage.

Not-For-Profit of the month

The Find Foundation was established in 2021 to own and operate the community papers that are being set up across Victoria.

Initially, a community paper was set up in 2019 in the Maroondah City Council region, by Find Accountant, as a way of helping the local NotFor-Profits, Schools, Clubs, SME, and other organisations in the area. In 2020, Find was approached to set up other regions e.g., Geelong, Manningham, and Knox. It was from there that the vision for a community paper in each council city/shire region across Victoria was born.

We were encouraged to set up a Not-For-Profit to own and run the community papers. Thus, in 2021 the Find Foundation was formed. Whilst we are not listed on the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission (ACNC) website because our organisation ‘does more than simply support NFPs’ we were unable to gain that status, but we are recognised by the ATO as being a Not-For-Profit and are required to fill in an annual ATO Income Tax Worksheet declaring our status each year as an NFP.

The Find Foundation is not a newspaper as such, but a community paper that supports all things local, brings community together in one place and facilitates participation from various groups in the local community to work towards supporting one another. It is a platform that meets a need that does not currently exist.

At the time of this release, we have two regions fully formed and making a difference in their communities – Maroondah and Geelong.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB BOWLS

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

FC LEOPOLD

FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.

We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town.

FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions.

FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player.

council news

movement Improved thanks to shared Path connections and croosings

Pedestrians, cyclists and other active users looking to make the most of the warmer weather stand to benefit from improved shared path connections in East Geelong, Lara and Corio.

The new Boundary Road shared path helps Greater Geelong residents in the eastern suburbs to travel from the Bellarine Rail Trail through to Eastern Gardens.

The path is linked to the wider trail network, connecting the Barwon River Trail, Bellarine Rail Trail, Eastern Gardens, Waterfront and the Bay Trail.

In addition, the Boundary Road path features a new type of crossing called a Shared User Path (SUP) crossing.

The crossing gives cyclists and pedestrians right of way over motorists with the added benefit of allowing cyclists to cross without having to get off their bikes.

The crossing area is recognised by its yellow pavement, with ‘Give Way’ signs on both sides.

Meanwhile, shared trail users around Lara will benefit from the development of Stage 2 of the Hovells Creek shared path, running between Flinders Avenue and Curletts Road.

This installation creates a continuous link from Station Lake Road to Windermere Road, Lara.

The region’s most recent addition is the Bacchus Marsh Road shared user path running between Purnell Road and the Abattoir, including an upgrade of the carpark at St Francis Xavier Primary School. The improvements are part of the implementation of the Council’s Shared Trails Master Plan, which aims to create a connected network of trails across the region.

“The shared trail developments and crossings will provide further encouragement for residents to remain active.

We all understand the benefits of cycling, running or walking and these improved connections will assist people across the region to get out and about.

The projects are about filling in gaps within the broader network and building new trails across the region.”

Shared Trails portfolio chair Cr Jim Mason

“I applaud the improved connections in East Geelong, Lara and Corio, and crossings along the Boundary Road path, while there are further exciting developments on the horizon in the City’s north.

Residents will welcome these developments, particularly the improved links they will create.

The City is installing these types of crossings on shared paths across the region, so our residents might also see them in new locations soon.

The next step in developing Lara’s trail network will look at the best routes to help shared path users access Serendip Sanctuary and the You Yangs.”

Pontoon replacements provide a boost for boating enthusiasts

The Ocean Grove’s Guthridge Street Boat Ramp has been upgraded to improve the functionality of the piles and pontoons for the region’s boating enthusiasts.

Fishers are reminded they must remove their lines from the water when a vessel approaches the pontoons.

All users are requested to place large fish frames and other waste in the bins provided onshore.

Storm damage to both the upstream and downstream pontoons in 2020 and 2021, saw the City of Greater Geelong install temporary structures to allow time

for new designs to be developed and funding sourced for replacement.

During December 2022, the downstream pontoon and piles were replaced, and the original upstream pontoons were refurbished. The pedestrian ramps to the pontoons have also been upgraded and the fish cleaning table relocated to facilitate pedestrian access and safety along the downstream jetty.

Grants from Better Boating Victoria were secured to enable the design and subsequent installation works to proceed. The City contributed in-kind and funding support, including all project management aspects.

The design of the piles and pontoons was completed by marine design and engineering consultants, GHD, who were engaged following a competitive process. The structure has a design life of 25-50 years.

Fishers are reminded they must remove their lines from the water when a vessel approaches the pontoons. All users are requested to place large fish frames and other waste (e.g. plastics, cans, old tackle) in the bins provided onshore.

for Clean Up Australia day 2023

As our world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, joining or organising a local clean-up activity can be a simple way to take positive action here in Greater Geelong.

Clean Up Australia Day is Australia’s largest community-based environmental event, with more than 20 million Australians volunteering to pick up litter in their local community since its inception.

In Greater Geelong, over 100 groups organised clean-up activities as part of last year’s event alone, pulling thousands of pieces of litter from beaches, reserves and creeks.

Registering a Clean Up Australia Day event

The dates for the various Clean Up Australia Day events are as follows:

• Business Clean Up Day: Tuesday 28 February

• Schools Clean Up Day: Friday 3 March

• Clean Up Australia Day: Sunday 5 March

Registration is free, and individuals, families and community groups will receive free cleanup kits, containing gloves and bags and other resources. While businesses can also request clean-up kits, they will be asked to pay a small fee to help cover the cost.

To register or donate, please visit the Clean Up Australia website.

“Our environment is facing pressure unlike ever before. Australians tell us every day that they are concerned about the world we live in but often feel frustrated and unsure how to make a positive impact.

Clean Up Australia Day is a great opportunity to work together and take practical action. We seek the support of all Australians. Together we can all make a real difference.”

SUMMER FUN AT THE POTATO SHED Clifton Springs Boat Harbour

- shallow entrance at low tides

Vessel operators are warned that the entrance to the Clifton Springs Boat Harbour (CSBH) may be shallow at low tides and restricted by seagrass wrack.

Maintenance dredging of the harbour occurred in December 2022. However, the area external to the entrance is not dredged and there are shallow banks in the vicinity. Exceptional seagrass growth on the Bellarine Banks in recent years, is contributing to infill of the harbour channels by seagrass wrack and is being monitored. Vessel operators are urged to take extra care at predicted tide levels below 0.4m.

The City, with financial support from Better Boating Victoria, is preparing a Dredging Management Plan 2023-2032 for CSBH. This Plan will identify an optimal harbour depth and proposed maintenance and capital dredging arrangements for the Harbour consistent with State Government requirements.

JAN 26

Australia Day is a g’day, mate, to celebrate all things about the Land Down Under on January 26. We join the 26,000,000 Aussies in their festivities observing the anniversary of the country’s settlement in 1788. Australia is widely deemed as a great place to live and a top travel destination. There is much to learn and appreciate about the oldest, driest and flattest inhabited continent in the world. So, read on for a fun history lesson and cool ideas for having a fantastic Australia Day!

The official national day of Australia is celebrated annually on January 26 commemorating the arrival of British ships to establish the first European settlement in Australia in 1788. These eleven ships carried over 750 criminals who had been tried and convicted in Great Britain for mostly petty crimes and then transported to penal colonies established by the British throughout the world, including North America and the Pacific. An additional 300 citizens from military and medical backgrounds made the trip to Australia, establishing the new colony.

AUS TRA LIA DAY

The first celebration of British sovereignty over the eastern coast of Australia occurred in 1818. Other names used throughout the years to refer to the date of this historic event have been “Anniversary Day”, “Foundation Day” and “Australian Natives’ Association” (ANA) Day. All Australian states and territories adopted “Australia Day” as the name of the day in 1935 and then in 1994, January 26 was official marked as a public holiday.

Serving as a day of national unity and the largest annual civic event in the country, Australia Day is filled with a variety of community and family traditions, the presentation of national awards and the welcoming of new Australian citizens. However, not all Australians feel the same about the day.

Indigenous Australians have long referred to this date as “Invasion Day” or “National Day of Mourning” in protest of the arrival of the British peoples. Some still observe counter-celebrations and the holiday has sparked a controversial debate. In 1938, William Cooper, a member of the Aboriginal Progressive Association, declared it as a “Day of Mourning,” alluding to the annual re-enactment of Phillip’s landing.

On Australia Day, many Aboriginal people mourn their forebears who suffered and and perished during colonisation. Now, the day is also infused with deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Protests to change the date of Australia Day to respect the Indigenous Australians also take place. The Australian government has acknowledged the traditional owners of lands which Australia Day takes place, in hope that Australians from all backgrounds come together to celebrate Australia as a multicultural society.

Melbourne Storm Head to Geelong

Melbourne Storm will continue its tradition of taking a pre-season NRL trial to a regional venue by heading to Geelong in February.

It has been confirmed today that Storm will play the Sydney Roosters at GMHBA Stadium at Kardinia Park in an NRL Pre-Season Challenge – the club’s first visit to Geelong since 2019.

Storm CEO Justin Rodski said the Geelong match would help to grow rugby league’s increasing profile and participation rates in the city and surrounding areas.

“We had a strong turnout for our trial against the Warriors four years ago and we’re looking forward to building on that in February,” -Rodski said.

“Geelong is a growth area for rugby league with this trial coinciding with the formation of the Geelong Sharks whose juniors will play in the Storm Junior League and seniors in the Storm Premiership for the first time in 2023.

Acting Executive Director, Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine, Tracy Carter said: “This match will be a terrific opportunity to welcome NRL fans from across the country to watch a great event, and we know that before and after the whistle they’ll enjoy the fabulous hospitality venues, attractions and experiences in Geelong and The Bellarine.”

Tickets for the Geelong match will go on sale in January with Storm members to have the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets.

Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

geelong waterfront

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

poppy kettle Playground

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons. Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

cunningham pier geelong

Cunningham Pier is one of the most recognisable structures on the Geelong Waterfront.

Opening in the mid-1850s it was originally known as Railway Pier. It was an important part of the Geelong Port and you can still see the train lines that were used to transport cargo to the end of the pier.

The pier stretches 250 metres out over Corio Bay and its bright white building is a standout feature of the foreshore.

The two-storey weatherboard building houses the Wah Bar and Asian food restaurant (bao buns!), Wah Wah Gee. The Pier Geelong function centre is also located here.

A large part of this Geelong pier is dedicated to car parking and a convenient covered walkway provides shelter as you walk along the train tracks.

Cunningham Pier fishing has always been popular and in keeping with tradition, local anglers continue to use it.

the old paper mills

Hubcaps To Creative Hubs is the title for a series of short films about creative Geelong. Hubcaps are a reminder of Ford as a major employer before pulling out in 2016. Vacant industrial spaces such as factories and wool mills have become creative villages.

I stayed in a Vrbo in the Old Paper Mills (1878). In Victorian times, this bluestone mill pulped rags to make paper. The dramatic waterfall setting reminded me of the cover of George Eliot’s novel The Mill and the Floss. The present owner, Alex Robins, has lovingly restored what he refers to as an Industrial Cathedral.

The old mill is a labyrinth of galleries, studios, workshops, and boutique shops with handmade goods. Enjoy a coffee at The Door Gallery Cafe surrounded by antique Indian doors.

Provenance Wines has a cellar door and restaurant in the main building. Enjoy tastings matched with bite-sized food pairings. Rone painted one of his famous esoteric faces on the back wall. As street art is so transient, it’s great to see a lasting testament to his work.

geelong arts and cultural precinct

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong western beach

People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grasscovered foreshore reserve.

Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.

The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.

The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

One of the most important steps in planning to save for your retirement is figuring how much you will need to spend each year to live a comfortable lifestyle. However, many people struggle when it comes to developing a budget for their future needs, particularly when their retirement is many years away.

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), have produced data to help pre-retirees understand how much they might need before they retire and what their likely budget might be if they wish to live a

The Age Pension is adjusted regularly by either the increase in the CPI or by a measure of wages growth, whichever is higher.
