The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free.
We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month.
We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.
We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area.
To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you.
Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate.

The City of Geelong is one of Victoria’s largest regional capital cities. Geelong had a population of approximately 230,000 as at the 2019 Report which includes 16,000 businesses. Geelong’s location is in strong growth corridor, making it an ideal location for businesses to explore options outside of the capital city.

Public feedback is critical to Council’s annual budget process.
It allows everyone a chance to highlight the value they place on different services that the Council offers.
And it provides the Council with valuable information, so we can better reflect community sentiment.
The additional funding we allocated before finalising the 2023-24 Budget in late June was in line with the strong public feedback we received.
The community spoke, and we took action.
The Budget allocates $565 million to deliver about 130 services to the Greater Geelong community and its visitors.
More than $195 million of that is on our capital works program.
This will allow us to open the Northern Aquatic and Community Hub, the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre, as well as upgrade parks, leisure facilities and sporting grounds.
After carefully considering all 955 submissions, Council was pleased to be able to direct further funding to our libraries, Kardinia Aquatic Centre and lifeguard services on the Bellarine.
An extra $565,000 has been set aside to open Kardinia pool throughout the traditional ‘off season’, continuing an extended period of operation that was introduced during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Council allocated $47,500 to ensure paid lifeguards will patrol Ocean Grove, 13 th Beach and Bancoora.
And a further $356,000 was found to support the Geelong Region Libraries Corporation.
The GRLC told us that this amount would maintain opening hours at all of the city’s libraries.
This lifts our total contribution for the financial year to $14.304 million - a $596,000 increase on 2022-23.
Council’s investment in libraries, per resident, is among the highest in Victoria.
But we need the State Government to lift its funding. For a long time, both levels of government shared the cost of operating libraries 50-50.
However, the state’s contribution has dwindled to about 20 per cent, leaving councils to shoulder the burden of rising costs.
Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Ali Wastie as the City of Greater Geelong’s new Chief Executive Officer.
Ms Wastie brings a wealth of experience in local government and the Victorian Public Service, having worked across the sectors since 2004.
She has held a number of senior executive positions, including serving as CEO of the Bass Coast Shire Council for the past fourand-a-half years.
Ms Wastie chairs the Alpine Resorts Victoria board, and has previous leadership experience as a director at the City of Melbourne and Yarra Ranges Council.
After finishing her role with Bass Coast Shire Council, Ms Wastie will join the City on 28 August.
Mayor Trent Sullivan said Ms Wastie’s expertise would be invaluable to the organisation, and the wider Greater Geelong community.
“We are delighted to welcome Ali to the City of Greater Geelong,” Mayor Sullivan said.
“Ali’s extensive local government experience, her strong leadership skills and passion for developing high performing teams, means she is ideally placed to lead the City through this challenging but exciting period.
“Ali also has strong credentials in education, health and tourism, which are sectors that are crucial to the continued development of the region.”
Ms Wastie said she was excited to be joining the City and was looking forward to working with councillors and employees to deliver high-quality services to the community.
“I am feeling very privileged to be appointed as CEO for the City of Greater Geelong and I am looking forward to commencing in the role on 28 August,” Ms Wastie said.
“Delivering on the community’s vision and Council’s plans and objectives in a period of growth, change and opportunity will be my focus.
“I have longstanding connections to Geelong, with family and friends living in the region.
“I am passionate about building and sustaining positive, can-do organisational cultures that are inclusive and welcoming.”
Mayor Sullivan praised acting CEO Kaarina Phyland for leading the City since September 2022.
“Kaarina has overseen a period that has transformed the City into a more efficient
and high-performing organisation,” he said.
“Under her leadership we have made progress on delivering the community’s Clever and Creative vision and the Council is thankful for Kaarina’s valuable contribution.”
Mayor Sullivan also thanked municipal monitors Prue Digby and Peter Dorling for their assistance in the CEO recruitment process.
When Alex Ho was weighing up his options in his final year of high school, he didn’t expect he would soon be almost 2000km away driving tractors, playing Aussie rules and donning three blankets in a South Australian winter.
Mr Ho is one of many Australians enjoying a new life in the country and the Regional Australia Institute hopes stories such as his will convince city dwellers to take advantage of the 91,000 jobs available.
A study by the institute found nearly half of urban workers would move to regional Australia for a better salary.
Mr Ho grew up in Brisbane, but has been working on a mixed grain and sheep farm in Cummins on the Eyre Peninsula, about 275km from Adelaide, since finishing school.
“(I’m) really enjoying my time here learning something new every day,” he told AAP.
His learning wasn’t limited to the farm, either, with Mr Ho joining the local footy team.
“I was really hesitant to join because I’ve never played before and I didn’t want to embarrass myself,” he said.
It became a great way to meet friends and he was surprised he enjoyed the code after dabbling with rugby union in high school.
He plans to work in agriculture for a few years before studying in the industry and can see himself settling in the country.
A recent trip home to Brisbane to visit family had solidified his decision to move.
“I spent a week there and I was like, the traffic and the noise, the honking… no one’s really saying g’day,” he said.
“I compare that to the town I’m in now and it’s like everyone’s taking it easy and you’re more or less on a first name basis with everybody.”
But the climate has taken a bit of adjusting to.
“It’s six degrees and I’m absolutely freezing, I’ve got the heater on, the fire going and just three blankets on my bed, so that’s not too pleasant.”
Lifelong Melburnian Angela DurstonRyan was in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic when she asked her employer for a transfer to Shepparton in northern Victoria.
The civil engineer now owns a house in the regional hub and loves being closer to the snow, but also not too far from the city.
“The community is probably the biggest thing that I love,” Ms Durston Ryan told AAP.
“Everyone’s involved and everyone looks out for you.”
RAI chief executive Liz Ritchie said the demand for regional workers was at an all time high as available jobs in capital cities declined.
“This year regional migration is up 17 per cent and it’s continuing to grow as the economic downturn prompts Australians to search for a more affordable lifestyle,” Ms Ritchie said.
She said while these figures were encouraging, many regions were playing catch-up when it came to infrastructure, services and housing.
Master Builders chief executive Denita Wawn said regional Australia offered tradies an opportunity to tap into high housing and infrastructure demand.
“Tradies who move to the regions will play a vital role in building the communities of tomorrow and contributing to the economic growth this country desperately needs,” Ms Wawn said.
National Farmers Federation boss Tony Mahar said the agriculture industry was calling out for workers.
“The career opportunities in agriculture are limitless,” Mr Mahar said.
“There is a job for everyone and every skill set right now in our farm sector.”
On 28 February 2023 the government announced they would be increasing the tax paid on superannuation fund earnings for high-value superannuation account holders.
This initiative will target people with a total superannuation balance exceeding $3 million and is expected to apply from the 2025-26 financial year. The scheme will not be implemented until 1 July 2025 - after the next Federal election.
At the present time, details of how the scheme will work are limited. The government has announced it will consult with the superannuation industry regarding implementation of the scheme.
The current situation
Superannuation funds pay tax on their investment earnings. The following table illustrates the rate of tax generally paid.
This proposal does not apply to individuals with a total superannuation balance of less than $3 million.
The total superannuation balance is the sum of all amounts a person holds in the superannuation system. It is calculated on 30 June each year and, at a high level, includes:
• amounts held in accumulation accounts, and in defined benefit schemes,
• amounts held in pension or income stream accounts, such as an account-based pension,
• amounts in the course of being rolled over from one super fund to another on 30 June,
• the amount of any outstanding limited recourse borrowing arrangement held by a selfmanaged super fund, in certain circumstances.
Any amounts contributed to superannuation as a personal injury contribution are excluded from the calculation of the total superannuation balance.
You can track your total superannuation balance by checking your MyGov account, or by contacting your superannuation fund.
A person’s total superannuation balance is critical when determining:
People with a total superannuation balance that exceeds $3 million will pay an additional tax of 15% on a portion of the earnings on their superannuation.
• if they will be affected by the proposed change to taxation of superannuation fund earnings and, if so,
• how any additional tax will be calculated.
While the government’s announcement and media commentary suggest an additional tax will be paid on superannuation fund investment earnings, this is not entirely correct.
Firstly, the tax calculation is based on an adjusted movement in a person’s total superannuation balance rather than on the actual earnings of their superannuation accounts. As a result, the extra tax may become payable on unrealised capital gains.
Secondly, the tax will not paid by the superannuation fund – rather it is levied on the individual member, personally. Once a tax assessment is issued, members will have the option of paying the tax personally to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) from their own savings, or having the tax payable released from their superannuation account.
Finally, while it is estimated that less than 80,000 Australians will be affected by the additional tax, this will grow over time as it appears the $3 million threshold will not be indexed to keep pace with inflation. Over time, more Australians will be subject to this additional tax.
The calculation of tax payable when a person has a total superannuation balance exceeding $3 million is complex, however the following steps and worked example may help to illustrate how the proposed tax will be calculated.
Step 1 - calculate earnings.
TSB current FY - TSB previous FY + Withdrawals - Contributions = Earnings
Step 2 - calculate the proportion of earnings corresponding to funds above $3 million.
TSB current FY - $3 million
TSB current FY = Proportion of Earnings
Step 3 - calculate the tax liability.
15% X Earnings X Proportion of Earnings = Tax Liability
Example
Jolene had a total superannuation balance of $4,200,000 on 30 June 2026. Her total superannuation balance on 30 June 2025 was $3,750,000.
During the 2026 financial year contributions of $30,000 were made. During the year Jolene withdrew $100,000 from her super as a lump sum.
Step 1 - calculate earnings.
$4,200,000 - $3,750,000 + $100,000 - $30,000 = $520,000
Step 2 - calculate proportion of earnings.
$4,200,000 - $3,000,000 = 29%
$4,200,000
Step 3 - Calculate the tax liability.
15% X $520,000 X 29% = $22,620
For the 2025-26 financial year, Jolene will have a tax liability, based on the earnings of her superannuation fund, of $22,620.
If the calculation of earnings results in a negative (loss) amount, the loss is carried forward to future years.
What action should I be taking now?
The proposal announced by the government on 28 February will be subject to lengthy consultation before it moves to the next stage. Legislation will then need to be passed for the proposal to become law.
Currently, the government does not propose introducing the measure until 1 July 2025, which is after the next Federal Election is due to be held.
For people likely to be affected by this measure, take time to understand how it works and how you may be affected.
Important Information
There is still a lot of uncertainty around the measure and its eventual impact.
Taking immediate action, like withdrawing money from superannuation, is probably not a strategy that should be pursued at this early stage unless you had plans to withdraw your super irrespective of this proposal. Once money is withdrawn from superannuation, particularly for individuals with significant account balances, it is unlikely you will be able to recontribute it to superannuation.

By Sally HigoeGone are the days when leadership was purely transactional and autocraticwhen a leader focused solely on performance and reward or punishment and intimidation. Emotional leadership is a more effective style of leadership, where a leader is emotionally intelligent, acknowledging the power of emotions, and identifying, using, understanding, and regulating emotions to achieve a common goal with their team.
For example, an emotional leader knows how to read the room and understands that a bereaved team member may not perform according to their normal standards.
This is the ability to regulate your emotions appropriately according to different situations. When we are emotionally flexible, we have a healthy relationship with our expectations. We can manage them better, and our emotional wellbeing remains intact. An emotionally flexible leader will know how to deal with moments such as:
• Crisis situations - these can be overwhelming, but an emotionally flexible leader will take control of emotions like panic and fear and be brave, leading the rest of their team to a state of calmness
• Change - For example, pay cuts can cause feelings of worry. However, an emotionally flexible leader takes control and helps their team respond better and embrace change. This can be through a positive influence on the team.
• Criticism - an emotionally flexible leader takes charge of their emotions when criticised negatively.
• Empathy - a good leader knows how to change emotions when a team member is in distress or is emotionally unstable. For example, they can say words of empathy, give hugs, etc.

Behavioural flexibility is the ability to appropriately adjust our behaviour in response to different situations. Ultimate behavioural flexibility is asking yourself, “What can I change about my thinking or my behaviour that will result in a different and improved outcome?”
A leader with good behavioural flexibility will find it easier to navigate through the following circumstances:
• Changing systems - if a system is changed, you can easily embrace the changes by acting as required at that time, for example, by arriving to work earlier. This is important for experimenting with systems in search of the optimum results.
• Decision-making - a behaviourally flexible leader finds it easier to make decisions because they are open to making changes for the good of their organization. This consequently means this leader becomes better at problem-solving, which is a skill highly required for innovation and invention.

Historically retailers in particular dictated the trends for each season. With internet research on style, colour, usage, prices, timing, and so much more, consumers are more savvy as to what they want to support their lifestyles. While finances are tight no longer will the public buy a bargain because it is discounted if it is not what they want. They are far more decerning.
How do we secure the sale, increase the basket size and profitability while growing foot traffic.

Thoroughly research the market on a regular basis to ascertain the customers needs. What problem do they want solved? What is the best product on the market to meet their needs. You may just find something in a completely different field that can be adapted to your products. What worked and what didn’t previously and why? What is all the information telling you?
This information will guide you to the right items to serve your customers needs. When is the right time to make the stock available? To bulk displays? Promote?, or collaborate with others in your vicinity? Big events are obvious such as Xmas or easter as applicable. Timing is often driven by habitual buying not consumer demand. What other impacts affect your sales: weather, holidays, specific event such as the spring racing carnival, the grand prix, the flower shows, home shows, wedding expo’s and so on. Each business is impacted differently.
How can you support your clients? Would customer service be a benefit? Show them how to put an assortment of clothing together to potentially increase basket size. Give advice on how to use or install tech products, so they can use them as soon as they get home. What exclusive, special edition products can you offer they can’t get elsewhere. Does anything need any alterations? What additional accessories assist in instant usage. Are the staff fully trained in all the products you offer. Customers like to feel you are there to support them, they are special and important to your business.
All this information will assist in making the right decisions that will send your projected KPI’s soaring. Examine all the research thoroughly. Look at each piece of research from every angle. Always avoid knee jerk reactions. One customer does not necessarily represent the population. We are all different with our own taste levels and needs. Listening to your customers, involving your staff who are serving them all day long, will give you some indication to assist in making those right decisions based on solid facts, the results.
The last piece of the puzzle is to explore any results you have achieved good and bad. If your results to date have been positive, how can you make them even more positive. If expectations were not met previously, determine why? Why did you not achieve the target? It may not be the wrong product, it could be displayed badly, wrong timing, wrong price point, wrong colour, insufficient stock, too much stock, insufficient staff knowledge. Dissect all the parameters that affect the sales and examine the what if’s?

When you decide to make a video there are a few things that you normally consider. First of all, you establish that you need one, and secondly that it needs to be about your business and thirdly that you need someone to make it for you. But what is not taken into account are the key messages that you would like to get across.
So you ask… what is a key message?
The Model System Knowledge Translation Centre - defines a key message as: The main points of information you want your audience to hear, understand, and remember. They are a breakdown of what you do, why you do it, how you are different, and what value you bring to customers or stakeholders.
Basically, a key message is what defines your business or another way to describe it is what is at the core of your business. With every video you make, the key message may change depending on the subject matter but still rooted in the same fundamentals and core values.
For example:

So why are key messages important?

There are many wood surfaces inside a building that need painting. Skirting boards, dados, architraves, window frames picture rails, feature timber walls and furniture – all require different painting technique to plaster walls.
Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving a smooth, painted finish.
1. Cover work surface
Spread plastic sheeting on the floor around the to-be-painted area so it doesn’t get splashed on. Laying newspaper or canvas on top of the plastic will stop you slipping on the plastic beneath and also soaks up paint spills.
2. Prepare wooden surface
Don rubber gloves and goggles or glasses to protect your hands and eyes. Mix a solution of water and TSP, sugar soap or borax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip a cloth in the solution, squeeze dry and wipe all surfaces to be painted. Rinse with another cloth dipped in clear, warm water. Let the timber dry completely.
Now check for any holes, gouges, nicks or scratches. Fill them in with wood filler using a flexible putty knife.
3. Sand the surface
Don a dust mask or respirator and hearing protection. Sand the timber flat areas with a random orbital sander and 200–280 grit sandpaper. This helps the wooden surface to bond with the paint. Sanding by hand is better for uneven surfaces such as you find on furniture.
4. Clean off dust
Using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove the dust and wipe with a damp cloth.
5. Prime wooden surface
Mix your primer well and apply with a brush or roller. When it has dried, check to see if the primer is transparent or streaky; if so, apply the primer a second time. A roller will prime a flat surface more quickly and leave it with a smoother finish.
6. Sand again
Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand down the dry surface again. Apply light pressure so that gouges don’t form.
7. Clean again
Use a vacuum cleaner and cloth as before to wipe away the dust.
8. Paint the surface
Foam-density rollers are useful for painting large surfaces. Insert a paint tray liner into the paint tray, then pour in paint so that it fills the tray less than halfway. Gently dab the roller into the paint and roll the paint up and down the slope of the tray a few times to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. Roll the paint lightly
onto the wooden surface. A high-density foam roller gives better coverage with thinner latex paint than with oil-based paints.
Paintbrushes are better for fiddlier jobs like window frames and furniture. Insert the bristles of the brush into the paint can just a third of their length each time you need more paint. Once on the wooden surface, stroke the brush in a parallel direction to the wood grain. Use short strokes. Keep a wet edge at all times so that you don’t leave overlapping marks.
For a more professional appearance, you could try spraying the surface rather than using a paint brush.
Do not be tempted to apply a second coat of paint after this coat has dried, as this will cause the paint to tear.
9. Sand the first coat
The way to achieve a smoother finish is to sand and paint one more time. When the first coat had dried, sand as before. This will flatten any bumps or inconsistencies introduced by the roller or paintbrush.
Gently sand by hand with 220-grit sandpaper. If using an orbital sander, attach the sandpaper and run it as lightly as possible over the surface. Do not apply any other weight except that of the sander itself.
After sanding, bunch up a cloth. Keeping it loose, run it lightly over the surface. If you apply too much pressure, the cloth ‘s surface may embed itself onto the wood.
10. Apply a second coat of paint
Apply a second coat with the roller or brush, and let dry, preferably overnight. Paint is more durable the longer it is left to dry.

Back in 2013, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issued a Taxation Ruling that addressed the rules around paying pensions.
While the Ruling applied to all superannuation funds, there are specific implications for SMSFs. On the surface, SMSFs appear to have additional flexibility when compared to APRA regulated funds.
Firstly, it is quite a common practice for the commencement of a pension to be backdated to an earlier date, often the previous 1 July. This may be for administrative simplicity or because the member balance at the end of the previous financial year is not available due the financial statements not having been prepared.
However, when considering the Taxation Ruling, and particularly paragraph 12, while a pension may commence before the first income payment is made, it cannot commence before a member has made a request or application for a pension to commence.
We recommend members requests to commence a pension should always be in writing or using an application form provided by the trustees of the superannuation fund, the fund’s
administrator, or the fund’s document provider. The request should always be made before the pension commences.
The practice of backdating the commencement of a pension from a SMSF became more complex with the introduction of the transfer balance cap.
While some SMSFs have historically been able to provide their transfer balance account reporting when the fund submits its statutory return, this will change from 1 July 2023.
From 1 July 2023, all SMSFs will be required to lodge transfer balance account reporting by the 28th day of the month following the end of the quarter in which the reportable event (e.g. commencement, reversion, or commutation of a pension) occurs.
The ATO has advised that all unreported events that have occurred by 30 September 2023 must be reported by 28 October 2023. Likewise, for pensions that commence in the first quarter of the 2024 financial year (e.g. on 1 July 2023) will also need to be reported by 28 October 2023.
On a final note, when a SMSF commences to pay a pension to a member, the trustee needs to provide the member with a product disclosure statement that provides details of the pension being paid. Most SMSF document providers have a PDS specific to their trust deed.

It may come as a surprise, but post-viral syndrome is not a new health issue. If you’ve lived a few decades, you may remember in the 1980’s and 90’s, that chronic fatigue was the term used to describe the long-term exhaustion which was usually caused by the Epstein Barr virus. Studies at the time found that muscle function, attention and memory were severely hampered, although the cause was largely unknown.
Similarly, whilst there are a range of long covid symptoms such as neurological, digestive, cardiovascular and autoimmune disturbances, for most people, fatigue is what has the greatest effect on the ability to function normally.
As the term chronic fatigue suggests, the fatigue lasted for months after the initial viral infection. This obviously has an enormous impact on people’s lives, as their ability to carry out day-to-day tasks can be severely hampered.
Conventional medicine has little to offer in the case of chronic fatigue, and this is where natural medicines really shine.
Studies from the 1990’s show herbal medicine to be effective in treating post viral syndromes and new research is emerging in how effective it is in treating long Covid.

Businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $50 million will be entitled to a 20% deduction for expenditure that supports electrification and more efficient use of energy.

The additional deduction will be available for eligible expenditure of up to $100,000 and is therefore capped at $20,000 for each business.
The temporary measure will apply to eligible assets or upgrades first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.
With the temporary full expensing (TFE) incentive due to end on 30 June 2023, the federal government has announced the reintroduction of the small business instant asset write-off.
This measure will provide businesses with cash flow support and reduce compliance costs. Assets that cost $20,000 or less may be eligible for this incentive.
From 1 July 2023, small businesses with aggregated annual turnover of less than $10 million will be able to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets.
Eligible assets must be first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024, and the write-off applies on a per asset basis.
A number of housing measures have been introduced in the 2023 Federal Budget to support social and affordable housing and improve access for home buyers.
These measures aim to combat the current social housing affordability difficulties that buyers face and provide easier access to home ownership.
From 1 July 2023, eligibility criteria for the Home Guarantee Scheme will be expanded to allow any 2 eligible people to be joint applicants for a guarantee, which has previously been restricted to spouses and de facto partners.
The government will also increase resources devoted to supporting social and affordable housing along with aiming to provide more houses under the Home Guarantee Scheme.
A number of measures aiming to support small businesses were announced by the Labor government as part of the 2023–24 Federal Budget.
As part of that, small businesses will be given an amnesty which will remit eligible failure-to-lodge penalties for late lodgments.
This measure will provide small businesses with cash flow support and reduce compliance burdens of applying for a remission.
At this stage this is a proposed measure and will require parliamentary approval to become law.
The federal government announced in its 2023–24 federal budget a measure that will provide small businesses with an additional 2 years to amend their income tax returns.
At present, the Commissioner may amend an assessment for small to medium business taxpayers for up to 2 years.
This proposed measure aims to help small businesses deal with the compliance burden of having to apply for an extension of their amendment period.
This measure, subject to receiving parliamentary approval, will commence from 1 July 2025.
The non-arm’s length income (NALI) measure announced by the Coalition government in 2022 will be amended to provide greater certainty to taxpayers.
The intention of the proposal is to include a factor-based approach for trustees to be able to adequately calculate the amount of SMSF income that is NALI income. This factor-based approach applies to a situation where general expenses of the fund are not at arm’s length amounts.
The factor-based approach would apply to general fund expenses incurred after 1 July 2023.
Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is the oldest and largest animal welfare centre in regional Victoria, providing animal welfare and education services to the Greater Geelong and surrounding Bellarine, Surf Coast, and Golden Plains Shires for over 65 years. GAWS cares for thousands of animals each year, reuniting them with their owners or finding them new forever homes. In 2022, GAWS cared for nearly 3500 animals, and rehomed, reunited, or diverted to specialist rescues 90% of these! Amazing! The GAWS shelter does not receive any government funding for its service and relies on community donations and fundraising to support its important work.

On site, volunteers assist by cleaning pens, feeding and grooming animals, walking and playing with the animals, and keeping careful observation of changes and improvements in health, behaviour and interactions over time. Volunteers can choose to work with dogs or cats, or to help sort donations, to assist in the laundry room, or to support reception staff interacting with the public.

In addition to our on-site volunteers, our network of foster carers volunteer their time 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for extended periods of time, to help care for individual animals not suited to the shelter environment due to health or age, or to help raise and socialise litters of kittens or puppies until ready for adoption into forever homes. Our foster carers are essential to ensure our most vulnerable animals receive the individualised support needed to be happy, healthy, and rehomable when the right person comes along for them. GAWS provides all resources to support its foster carers, including vet care, food, enrichment and litter.
Along with money raised from public use of our low-cost Community GAWS Vet Clinic, GAWS fundraises through its popular GAWS Opportunity Shop, located at 63 Vines Rd, Hamlyn Heights VIC 3215. Open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday, the store is a well-known stop on the Op Shop circuit in Geelong, with plenty of new treasures to find each visit. To help care for our animals, GAWS also runs several fundraisers during the year. Our Winter Appeal 2023 is currently running to help raise desperately needed funds for our overflowing shelter and its animals. We currently have over 500 animals in our care – the highest number of animals at this time of year to date. During such cold winter weather, our animals need to eat more food, need more bedding, and need coats to stay warm. Their enclosures need to be weather-proof and warm, with any upgrades to facilities at cost to GAWS. Our young, old, and sickly animals are more prone to illness, again with treatment at cost to GAWS. Donating money to our Winter Appeal during June and July 2023 is one of the most effective ways to support GAWS’ mission to help Geelong’s homeless companion animals this year. Our ‘Feel Good Fee’ reduced-fee adoption campaign from Thursday 22 nd to Friday 30 th June 2022 saw more than 100 animals adopted from GAWS within one week, ensuring those 100 animals now had warm beds and full stomachs in loving new homes for the rest of the winter and into the future.
If you like the idea of a furry house mate but are afraid of commitment, then consider becoming a GAWS volunteer foster carer – match with the kitten, cat, puppy, or dog that suits you, for the length of time that suits you. Help one of our homeless animals find warmth and happiness, even for a brief time, until they find their forever human. Limiting children’s device use to age appropriate times, keeping children with devices in eyeview and ensuring access to inappropriate sites is blocked are all necessary restrictions Discussing the issues and agreeing to times, routines and limits helps children take on an ownership and develop a sense of responsibility
Offering healthy alternatives that help counteract the appeal of the screens is possibly the most effective strategy. See some suggestions below.

Chaplain Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.auSuspicious behaviour can refer to incidents, events, or individuals that seem unusual or out of place. Reporting something that just doesn’t feel right can prevent serious crime and enhance the safety of your community.
But it can sometimes be confusing to know what to report and who to report to.
“Suspicious behaviour” is a fairly broad term for a whole range of activities that seem odd and out of place. Of course, there could be a simple explanation for why someone is behaving as they are. But – as the old saying goes – “It is better to be safe than sorry”.
Most suspicious behaviour is fairly obvious. It is things like:
• Someone going door to door in an office building trying handles
• A car being driven around and around the same block
• Someone standing in the one place for a long period of time
• A person carrying property such as laptops, office equipment, at an unusual time or location
• Someone suddenly sprinting away
• Someone sitting in a car parked for a long period of time
• Person in a retail setting with a phone to the ear, but not talking or ‘reacting’ to the phone
People may note this sort of behaviour but still not do anything about it. Why? It is often because we feel we may be wasting police time. The “It’s probably nothing” response. But with a Victorian population of 6 and a half million, and 16,000 police officers, it is vital that we be the extra eyes and ears that can help those officers keep us safe.
Another reason is that we don’t know who to report to. Is the odd behaviour actually serious enough to call the police? Maybe it is a report for Crime Stoppers? Or depending on your location would you be best to report to a security guard? Do you go to your local station or do you phone 000?
If you see something ‘odd’ the authority that you report to will depend on your location and what you have seen, but the basic rule of thumb is if you are seeing it NOW, call Police on Triple Zero (000).
If it is something you have seen earlier in the day or though you are witnessing it now, you don’t believe it is serious, you can call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
If you want to report anonymously call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and for something you believe could be a potential terrorism threat, you can report anonymously to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.
To make your report as valuable as possible try to take in as much information as you can. Report what happened, where and when it occurred, description of suspects and vehicle, and if possible, the time and in what direction the suspect went.
If describing a person, think about build, hair colour, gender, height, complexion, facial hair. Take note of clothing, shoes, tattoos or scars.
For a suspect vehicle, take note of the make, the type of vehicle (a sedan, hatchback, 4wheel, truck) and the colour.
It is not enough to take note of the number plate/registration. There is a good chance, if there is a crime occurring or about to occur, the plates have been stolen. Also look for accessories, such as roof racks, and stickers or logos.
Keep in mind that all information, no matter how small, is important. It could be the missing piece that Victoria Police need to prevent a crime.
In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.
In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.
FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.

Greater Geelong is experiencing the fastest employment growth of all large Australian regional cities, becoming a leader in job creation.
New data presented by .id Consulting in the Geelong Economic Profile shows there are 135,500 jobs in the Geelong region, with 12,000 new jobs created in 2022 alone. This is the fastest growth seen in records spanning 20 years.
Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,931 jobs), Construction (+1,603) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,423) were behind the largest job increases. Nearly 22,000 businesses are operating in the region.
Greater Geelong’s estimated Gross Regional Product (GRP) was $17.58 billion in the year ending June 2022 representing a 10.3 per cent increase in one year, also the fastest growth in 20 years. Benchmarking shows that of the top 20 largest economies nationally in terms of GRP, Greater Geelong had the second fastest growth (only behind Karratha and its mining industry).
There are nearly 170 major construction projects valued over $10 million, proposed, approved, under construction or recently completed in our municipality.

We want to see Greater Geelong through your lens, seeking images that represent what makes our region unique and diverse.
There are so many breathtaking places to capture, from iconic scenic views, stunning seascapes, wildlife sanctuaries, historic sites and heritage buildings, to inner-city streets and bustling laneways.
With some of the most picturesque landscapes in Australia, there are limitless ways to celebrate and showcase the region.
A public vote will be held to determine the final 13 photographs for the calendar, including the calendar cover photo. Last year over 5,400 voters cast their votes.
After the final 13 photographs are selected in September, more than 135,000 calendars will be printed and then posted to households in November.
Locations like aged care facilities, the Anakie General Store and the Indented Head Post Office will also receive copies of the 2024 calendar.
Additional copies of the calendar will be available to pick up at the City’s customer service centres and local libraries from November.
The competition opens on Wednesday 31 May 2023 and closes at 5:00pm on Friday 11 August 2023.

In Geelong, Art Masterclass offers traditional craft workshops along with a mix of modern art classes. Introducing the art of Turkish mosaic lamps to Australia for the first time.
During this 2.5-hour class, you will learn the techniques of this ancient craft that dates back 500 years. This course will teach you how to lay tile (tesserae) as well as how to assemble geometric patterns. Make your own Turkish mosaic lamp by choosing a geometric template and following the directions!
We offer sumptuous Turkish tea service delicious treats and homemade Turkish shortbread cookies at all of our workshops and events.

The Bellarine Railway offers scenic train trips along the shores of Swan Bay...!
Take a scenic train trip along picturesque Swan Bay in carriages that are fully enclosed yet offer the time-honoured option of raising a window to really become part of the passing landscape.
Our volunteer Booking Officers will issue passengers with an Edmondson ticket as a souvenir of the trip and offer a printed Lineside Guide and Spotto Activity Sheet for the kids – so make sure you ‘check in’ at the booking office window before jumping on-board!
Fur passengers are welcome to travel with their families, providing they are friendly with fellow passengers and travel in the carriage allocated by our volunteers. Space may be limited and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Geelong will unveil another debutant in Sunday’s VFL clash with North Melbourne, with Wangaratta footballer and former Murray Bushranger Hunter Gottschling set to make his debut.
Gottschling has been named among four inclusions for the Cats for the game at GMHBA Stadium.
Marcus Herbert returns after missing last week with a calf injury, while Thomas Panuccio and Jack Evans also return to the lineup.
Osca Riccardi (back tightness) and Tom Feely (foot) will miss the clash through injury, while Jamie Quick has been named an emergency, and Oisin Mullin has received a call-up to the AFL side this week.
First bounce for the VFL match will be at 5.35pm on Sunday, following the AFL clash at GMHBA Stadium.
Patrons who would like to attend the VFL match will be asked to make their way to Gate 5 at the conclusion of the AFL game. Gate 5 will open at 5.05pm for the public to enjoy the VFL match from the Reg Hickey Stand.

National NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to learn, celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the NAIDOC Week theme ‘For Our Elders’ pays tribute to the important role Elders play in Indigenous communities and families. They are culture knowledge holders, guiding generations and paving the way for advocacy and activism across multiple sectors including health, education, the arts, politics and everything between.
To understand more about the significance of NAIDOC Week and this year’s theme, we sat down with proud Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta Black Fulla, ENOKi (they/them) - the artist behind this year’s NAIDOC Week creative at Westfield. ENOKi is based in Wurundjeri Country (Melbourne) and is a multi-media artist, with a focus on digital media.
What does this year’s NAIDOC Week theme ‘For Our Elders’ mean to you?
For me, this year’s NAIDOC theme ‘For Our Elders’ means taking up opportunities and spaces that my older families didn’t get the privilege to do. It is about keeping the knowledge and traditions alive that my ancestors fought so hard to keep, while colonisers tried to destroy it and force their own culture onto us.
How do you typically involve yourself in NAIDOC Week celebrations, cultural events and/or educational moments?
I show up for the mob in my community, whether it be the annual NAIDOC march or events held by people in my community, especially queer events such as gigs, talks or exhibitions.
Can you explain the meaning behind the artwork you created for Westfield?
I wanted to show that the most important thing for my people is that we have always cared and will continue to care for each other and the land. Caring for land is more than just making sure the land is healthy, it’s also about protecting our song lines and keeping traditions alive. We have a symbiotic relationship with the land - if the land is unhealthy and being destroyed then we will be unhealthy because losing our land means losing our culture too.
How is your culture and identity represented through your art?
When I think about how my culture and identity are represented through my art, it’s more than just my Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta culture that I grew up with (across VIC and NSW). It is also my Queer identity that comes along with that, and how they both intersect with each other. From the colours and sounds around me that are made from the natural and industrial environment to the stories from my elders, and the new stories and sounds that are being made by mob. These are all the things that inspire me and are the things that show in my art.
Having ADHD I tend to hyper focus on activities, hobbies and different types of crafts, so I’ll get a random urge to pick up an art medium and then become completely obsessed with the media. I will learn everything I can about that medium, or at least the aspects the that interest me. From working with different mediums, I’ve found that materials are fluid to the story, where one material may become a part of the story and by changing that material, it can also change the story and how it’s viewed.

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jampacked with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.
The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.
The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.
A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.
We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.
The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.
The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.
The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.
Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.
Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.
Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.
People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s.
Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.
Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.
The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.
The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.
When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!
Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.
Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.
Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.
Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.
It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The time when you want to retire and when it actually happens can often be quite different. According to the ABS, 70% of those intending to retire from the workforce indicated that they intend to retire after reaching age 653. But whilst you might be prepared to keep working well into your 60s, there’s a significant gap between that expectation and reality. If we look at when people are actually retiring, the average age at retirement for those retiring in the last five years was just under 633. Almost half of Australians are making this earlier than anticipated move into retirement due to health issues or redundancy.
