World Day of Grandparents

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, a global celebration held on the fourth Sunday of July, is a beautiful reminder to honour the invaluable contributions of our elders. It’s a day to cherish their wisdom, experience, and the unwavering love they bring to our lives. This year, on July 28th, 2024, let’s move beyond the ordinary and create meaningful experiences that celebrate the incredible legacy of our grandparents and senior loved ones. For families with geographically distant grandparents, technology offers a bridge to connect. Schedule a video call filled with games, stories, or simply a heartfelt chat to catch up. Encourage them to share their experiences, ask questions about their lives, and create new memories virtually.

Within families, the power of storytelling can be a beautiful way to celebrate. Encourage your elders to share tales from their youth, their life lessons learned along the way, and their experiences that have shaped them. These stories offer a window into the past, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for their journey. Consider creating a legacy project by recording their stories for future generations.

Unleash your creativity and embark on a craft project together. Design a family tree, decorate picture frames with photos and mementos, or create a memory box filled with keepsakes. This could be a collaborative effort, allowing younger generations to learn about family history while creating something special with their elders. For a personal touch, write heartfelt poems or messages expressing your love and appreciation. Skip the generic store-bought items and opt for a homemade gift that speaks volumes. It could be a hand-painted card with a sincere message, a photo album filled with cherished memories, or a coupon book for things like massages, baking sessions, or movie nights. These personalized presents demonstrate the effort and thought put into celebrating their presence in your life.

Looking beyond the family unit, consider volunteering your time at a senior center. Many elderly individuals may not have regular contact with family, and your presence can make a significant difference. Play games, read books aloud, help with projects, or simply offer a listening ear. Your time and effort can brighten their day and offer valuable companionship. Organize an intergenerational event to create a fun-filled day that fosters connection between different age groups. Host a potluck dinner where everyone contributes a dish, have a game night with board games or even adapted versions of classic party games to ensure inclusivity, or hold a talent show where young and old can showcase their skills. These events not only provide entertainment but also break down barriers and create a sense of community. Researching organizations working on senior rights allows you to advocate for change and improve the lives of the elderly population. You can volunteer your time, donate resources, or raise awareness about issues faced by our seniors. Even small actions can contribute to positive changes in policies and services that directly impact their well-being.

For a truly unique experience, consider a themed celebration based on your elder’s interests. Choose a decade from their youth and transform your space accordingly. Decorate with posters, play music from that era, and prepare food that was popular back then. Dress up in vintage clothing and embark on a nostalgic journey together.

Celebrate their cultural background by learning a few phrases in their native language, cooking a traditional dish together, playing music from their culture, or watching a movie set in their home country. This allows you to appreciate their heritage and gain a deeper understanding of their roots.

Turn the day into a celebration of their passion! If your grandparent loves gardening, visit a local nursery, plant flowers together, and create a beautiful space they can enjoy. For a movie buff, have a movie marathon featuring their favorite classic films or a genre they enjoy. By focusing on their hobbies and interests, you show appreciation for the things that bring them joy.

Consider creating an experience voucher box filled with coupons for activities they can enjoy throughout the year. Include vouchers for a visit to the park, a picnic lunch outdoors, a museum visit, or a movie night in. These experiences provide opportunities for them to explore their interests, socialize, and create new memories. A memory jar filled with small notes or photographs that evoke happy memories is a thoughtful gift. These can be funny anecdotes, pictures from special occasions, or simply inside jokes. Every time they revisit the jar, it will be a journey down memory lane filled with warmth and joy.

For more than four decades Pako Festa has showcased Geelong’s colourful cultural diversity, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to our city’s cosmopolitan heartland. As Victoria’s largest multicultural street party, the festival is a huge part of the rich cultural tapestry that makes Geelong the city it is today.

The annual parade on Pakington Street, Geelong West, is not just a fantastic spectacle, it enriches our community by strengthening connections between our city’s ethnic groups through food, performance and art.

These ‘cultural bridges’ have helped attract people with shared values to our vibrant and dynamic community and have contributed to making Geelong one of Australia’s fastest growing regional cities.

This month, the National Wool Museum celebrates this contribution in its latest exhibition Cultural Bridges: Celebrating Four Decades of Pako Festa.

The exhibition, in partnership with Cultura, features traditional decorative dress, carefully crafted heritage items and images capturing all the fun of the festival.

And on 13 July, the final Saturday of the exhibition, the museum will throw open its doors for a free Global Craft Bazaar kicking off at 12pm.

The bazaar features a fantastic array of dance performances and interactive dance workshops showcasing the talents of Geelong’s Lithuanian, Filipino, Punjabi and Greek communities.

The event also includes eight stalls selling locally handcrafted food, clothes, jewellery and art from Geelong’s multicultural community.

I encourage you to visit the bazaar and the exhibition, which runs until 14 July, and see for yourself how Pako Festa has continued to evolve alongside our city.

Cultural Bridges and the Global Craft Bazaar are just two of many events happening across Greater Geelong these school holidays.

More than 100 venues and businesses across our region are getting involved in Tastes of Greater Geelong, while the City’s winter school holiday program also features a multitude of events.

Visit geelongaustralia.com.au/tastes for the full Tastes of Greater Geelong program and geelongaustralia.com.au/ events to see what else is happening across our region this winter.

FINANCIAL PLANNER

When Business owners are often so focused on building their business, they neglect to protect the investment to ensure the survival of the business if something unexpected occurs.

Insurance can help by providing lump sums if a key person or business owner dies or suffers a serious illness or injury. Business owners need to assess the risks in their businesses and considering the options and strategies to minimise these risks or to cover the financial downsides.

There are various business insurance purposes to consider.

Business Succession Plan

Succession planning is simply a strategy for the handover of a business from one owner to another in particular circumstances, such as the planned or unplanned departure of a principal from the business. A comprehensive plan helps to ensure the business survival and can minimise disputes between owners and families. This plan includes a documented buy/sell agreement to cover issues such as:

• Establishing who should retain ownership and control of the business, by providing an orderly transition with the departing owner (or their estate) selling their interest in the business to the remaining owner(s).

• Determining the ‘trigger’ events which may result in the departure of a principal.

• Ensuring that the departing owner (or estate) receives an agreed and predetermined value for their interest in the business.

• Providing the remaining owner(s) with funding options to purchase the departing owners interest in the business

The use of insurance as a funding source provides greater certainty for all parties and can be less expensive than taking on debt. It will help to eliminate the need for:

• The business to be wound up or

• A forced sale of the business or assets to pay out the departing owner (or estate) or

• The remaining owner(s) to use personal assets or borrowings to pay out the departing owner (or estate)

Policies can be owned under a number of structures but in most cases self-owned policies are the most tax effective option. This also provides greater flexibility if new owners enter the business or existing owners exit as there is no need to transfer ownership of policies.

Premiums paid on insurance policies used for Business Succession purposes are generally not tax deductible. There may be tax implications including CGT for the departing owner and continuing owners and you should seek specialist taxation advice.

Debt Personal Guarantee

Taking out insurance for the purpose of guarantor protection ensures that if death, TPD or a trauma event occurs to a business owner who has provided a guarantee for a business loan, that the loan can be repaid.

This strategy benefits the guarantor by protecting personal assets which have been used to secure business loans. It also ensures that the business does not face an unexpected financial burden if the lender requires the loan to be repaid or renegotiated. Ideally a guarantor should be insured for 100% of the loan whether they are jointly or severally liable for the debt to provide the best protection.

Premiums paid on insurance policies used to repay debts are not tax deductible.

Policies can be self-owned (by the person who acted as guarantor) or be owned by the business entity. The tax implications on claim proceeds can vary depending on the option selected.

• Life policy – tax is not payable on claim proceeds received

• TPD/trauma policy – capital gains tax will apply

• The business entity receives the proceeds and can directly repay the debt

• Tax does not apply on the claim proceeds received on life, TPD or trauma policies

• The insured person receives the proceeds and needs to pay the debt on behalf of the business.

• A written agreement should be in place setting out the respective parties’ obligations. This may result in further tax implications and the debt reduction agreement should exclude ‘rights of contribution’ from arising

With this strategy, care should be taken with any contractual arrangements to ensure capital gains tax is not triggered. The use of insurance to repay debt may also affect valuations of the business. You should seek specialist legal and tax advice.

Key Person Insurance

Key Person insurance protects the business against the loss of a principal or other person who is integral to the business. The loss of key people can have significant adverse financial impacts on the business.

Key Person insurance helps to ensure that a business survives following the loss of a key person in the event of death, disablement or trauma. There are two different purposes - ‘revenue purpose’ or ‘capital purpose’. It is necessary to distinguish between them for taxation purposes.

Key Person – Capital Purpose

The sudden loss of a key person means the business may need to:

• Repay loans made between the key person (principals) and the business. Repay loans or debts to creditors which have been called in because of the loss of the key person

• Compensate the business for any goodwill lost

• Replace lines of credit (i.e. working capital)

The business may take out an insurance policy on each key person to offset the anticipated financial loss. In this instance, the insurance required is for ‘capital purposes’ as it adds to the value of the business. The business owns the policy, pays the premiums and receives the proceeds if something happens to the key person. The proceeds are not assessable as income and the premiums are non-deductible. However proceeds received by the business for Total & Permanent Disability or Trauma insurance are subject to Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Life insurance proceeds are exempt.

Key Person – Revenue Purpose

The sudden loss of a key person means that a suitable replacement may need to be found and the business may face unexpected costs for recruitment. The business may also want compensation for reduced revenue, sales and profit to help meet other expenses.

The business may take out an insurance policy on each key person to offset the anticipated financial loss. In this instance, the insurance required is for ‘revenue purposes’.

The business owns the policy, pays the premiums and receives the proceeds if something happens to the key person. If the business made a declaration at the time of paying the premium that the purpose was of a ‘revenue’ nature, then generally the premiums would be tax deductible and the proceeds would be assessable income of the business.

Business Expenses Insurance

Business Expenses insurance is designed specifically for business owners or sole traders and aims to minimise the financial impact of their sickness or injury by paying a monthly benefit to cover eligible business expenses during a prolonged absence from work. This will allow a business owner to focus on recovery.

Business Expenses policies will usually pay a benefit up to 100% of your gross (eligible) expenses for a set term of 12 months after a waiting period has expired.

To be eligible you need to be a sole trader, in a partnership or a working director and be responsible for paying the business’s expenses. Eligible expenses may include costs for premises, services/utilities, equipment and leasing costs, salaries and associated costs for non–income generating employees, and accounting fees.

The policy is owned by the business entity with the business owner as the insured person. Generally premiums for Business Expenses insurance are fully tax deductible. The proceeds are taxable but the business can claim tax deductions for expenses paid.

How to guide your team to success for the new financial year

LEADERSHIP & TEAM

“People don’t need to be managed, they need to be unleashed” – (Richard Florida)

... What a great quote. It gets me excited at the possibilities.

Have you ever imagined before... ...a team where everyone is two feet in, hungry and ready to commit 100% to the growth of the business, to support you, the leader and to share all of their amazing ideas and challenges.

...A team that thrives on innovative thinking and is empowered to ‘own’ itboth their own performance and also the outcome for the entire team.

...A form of leadership where the team are encouraged to create and ‘unleash’ without fear of judgement or criticism.

These kind of results stem from high impact leadership. A style of leadership that focuses on the heart of any organisation –the people and the standards to which they operate.

It recognises that great people want to improve themselves; they want to contribute, and they want to make a difference.

And it all begins at the top.

...With the best time to reinvigorate and reboot being the start of a new financial year! Fresh goals. Fresh perspective.

(I was astounded to recently read that 6 out of 10 workers are miserable! (according to a survey conducted in the Daily Mail).. and at the top of the list of complaints was quality of leadership.)

If ‘good’ is ‘good enough’ then the culture of the organisation will feel flat...

The team will do little to improve how things are done and new team members will wonder what they’ve got themselves into.

This type of environment is missing standards.

If standards are set; if they’re nonnegotiable and they cover everything from answering the phone to submitting weekly goals...

...the team that you really want, (the one that grows the business), they’ll stay and play.

This team will strive, they will thrive... and so, will business.

The possibilities are glowing;

• Many minds working together for the greater good.

• You, as the leader, leading the innovators (not following the pack!)

• A business that is profitable.

• Clients and customers continuously come back.

• A team that is engaged, happy and encouraged to explore

This is the standard of a world-class culture – where a good day is when the team member knows they’ve made a difference, and they were capable under pressure of finding a way.

THIS is empowerment.

THIS is the creation of a business that turns heads.

Leadership is many things, but it all comes down to one thing – You’re there to help your team to ‘think’ in a way that;

• Seeks to challenge their own beliefs and attitudes about what’s possible

• Allows them to own their role

• Boosts their personal performance

• Gives them more job satisfaction

• Encourages them to contribute to the improvements and innovations in the organisation

• Guides them in how to solve problems in a way that demonstrates good judgement and thought for consequences

• Allows them to think of others and the impact decisions have on them

THIS must be your standard. When your team can think in this way, you increase productivity, see a rise in satisfaction, and a surge in results.

But remember, your standards, they must be non-negotiable. They must apply to everyone.

Everyone contributes. Everyone speaks up. Everyone owns it.

This is the standard.

The leader is there to encourage, inspire and assist as required.

...Butifyoudon’tmeetthestandard,moveon.

It is your standards that set you apart from the rest, that move you away from mediocre and into extraordinary.

It is the standards that will encourage your team to push for the next level of excellence and demand more each and every day.

Great standards include-

• Communication excellence – team members expect to communicate with each other, the clients and the stakeholders with respect and courtesy at all times

• At cause – the team holds themselves at cause and take 100% responsibility for their results and non-results

• No hidden agendas. We are open and work through challenges

Leadership is not a ‘sometimes’ undertaking. It’s a constant. It’s helping others to grow, constantly guiding, and supporting their success.

If you’re wondering and questioning if you have the right standards in place or if you’re on the right path to business excellence...

... then your likely not.

BUSINESS COACH

Achieving Work-Life Harmony: A Blueprint for Success

Elmedia

In today’s fast-paced world, finding a harmonious balance between work or study and personal life is essential for overall well-being and productivity. Achieving a good work-life balance isn’t just about managing time; it’s about planning and preparing to create a life that is both fulfilling and sustainable. Here’s how you can cultivate this balance and enjoy a more positive and productive life.

The Power of Planning

The cornerstone of a successful worklife balance is planning. When you meticulously plan your time and tasks, you create a roadmap that guides you through your daily responsibilities without overwhelming you. The adage “Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance” holds true; with thorough planning, you can anticipate challenges and adjust accordingly, ensuring a smoother workflow.

Effective Time Management

To achieve a balanced life, start by organizing your days and weeks with clear, achievable goals. Prioritize your tasks and allocate specific times for work, study, and personal activities. By having a structured plan, you can avoid the stress of last-minute rushes and focus more on what truly matters.

Delegation and Empowerment

A key aspect of maintaining balance is recognizing that you don’t have to do everything yourself. Delegation is not just about offloading tasks; it’s about empowering your team members and trusting them with responsibilities. When you delegate effectively, you:

1. Foster Team Collaboration: Ensure that each team member understands their specific roles and how they contribute to the overall goals. This prevents overlap and confusion, making your team more efficient and cohesive.

2. Enhance Skills and Growth: Empowering your staff with specific responsibilities encourages them to take ownership of their tasks, leading to personal and professional growth.

3. Create a Positive Work Culture: A welldelegated team is more motivated and engaged, reducing staff turnover and fostering a positive, supportive work environment.

Building Strong Relationships

Good relationships with your staff are crucial. When your team knows what the collective goals are and feels valued, they are more likely to work towards these goals with enthusiasm. Communication is key; keep everyone informed about their roles and responsibilities, and ensure there is a mutual understanding of each other’s tasks. This way, if someone is absent, others can step in and cover essential functions without significant disruption.

Advantages of Delegation

Effective delegation brings numerous benefits to both your business and personal life:

1. Business Stability: Your entrepreneurial skills ensure that your business remains on course, even when you’re not directly involved in every task.

2. Reduced Staff Turnover: A motivated and empowered team is less likely to leave, saving you the time and resources needed for training new employees.

3. Increased Staff Engagement: When staff members feel they play a vital role in the business, their engagement and productivity increase.

4. Positive Business Culture: A supportive and collaborative work environment enhances overall morale and customer loyalty.

5. Personal Growth for Staff: Delegation helps in the professional development of your team, allowing them to acquire new skills and take on more responsibilities.

Personal Life Benefits

Achieving a good work-life balance has significant advantages for your personal life as well:

1. Time to Work ON the Business: With tasks delegated, you have more time to focus on strategic planning and business development rather than getting bogged down by daily operations.

2. Increased Productivity: Proper planning and delegation lead to more efficient use of time, allowing you to accomplish more without overextending yourself.

3. Reduced Stress: Knowing that your business or study tasks are under control allows you to relax and enjoy your personal time more fully.

4. Happiness and Fulfillment: When you leave work at work and enjoy quality time with your family and yourself, you return to work refreshed and more productive.

In conclusion, achieving work-life balance is about strategic planning and effective delegation. By fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment, you can create a fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle that benefits both your professional and

Good phone system can enable a business by meeting the evergrowing demands of its customers and employees. Since the pandemic in 2020, it has been increasingly clear that having a flexible workforce that can pick up and work from any location can be the difference between your business surviving and thriving.

Over the coming months, I will write about components enabling your business flexibility and being able to meet and surpass your employees’ technology needs while delivering more to your customers. Today, we start with a key technology, a top tier phone system helps your business communicate with customers.

VoIP

VoIP stands for Voice of Internet Protocol; in simple terms it means a phone system

that uses an internet connection rather than a dedicated phone line. Most phone lines, especially if you have moved to the NBN, use VoIP technology. With VoIP it is easy to have a phone system with increased functionality over traditional business phone systems, while reducing costs and simplifying administrative overhead.

What Features do a VoIP Business Phone System offer?

Business Phone Systems have evolved beyond a menu function that connects to specific targets or takes messages. A good VoIP phone system, available anywhere there is internet connection, provides an extensive range of features:

1. Schedule phone hours and multiple call-flow scenarios (business hours, after hours).

2. Host online meetings and webinars.

3. Message internally with colleagues or stakeholders.

4. Share files, track tasks, and collaborate.

5. Diversion of calls during long wait times.

6. Calling multiple phone lines at once.

7. Calendar integration to know when not to call employees.

8. Recognition of business hours to automatically divert calls, improving employee wellbeing.

9. Emailing voicemail messages.

10. Using computers, mobile phones, and physical handsets to handle calls.

Business Phone systems Microsoft Teams

11. Improve call quality with background noise suppression.

12. Using AI to take notes, key points, create tasks, next steps, and more.

The list goes on for what a good business phone system can do to enable your business.

Microsoft Teams

There are many different VoIP business phone systems are out there, but one of the most popular, and for good reason, is Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft Teams is a product line that is built to augment the Microsoft Office suite, you’ll probably be familiar with mainstays like Word, Excel, and Outlook. Microsoft Teams is a top tier business phone system with close integration with the Microsoft ecosystem.

Teams is a cost-effective way to enable your business, especially if you’re already using the Microsoft Office suite, with monthly operational costs generally being lower than traditional business phone systems.

painting wooden surfaces

PAINTING & DECORATING

There are many wood surfaces inside a building that need painting. Skirting boards, dados, architraves, window frames picture rails, feature timber walls and furniture –all require different painting technique to plaster walls.

Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving a smooth, painted finish.

1. Cover work surface

Spread plastic sheeting on the floor around the to-be-painted area so it doesn’t get splashed on. Laying newspaper or canvas on top of the plastic will stop you slipping on the plastic beneath and also soaks up paint spills.

2. Prepare wooden surface

Don rubber gloves and goggles or glasses to protect your hands and eyes. Mix a solution of water and TSP, sugar soap or borax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip a cloth in the solution, squeeze dry and wipe all surfaces to be painted. Rinse with another cloth dipped in clear, warm water. Let the timber dry completely.

Now check for any holes, gouges, nicks or scratches. Fill them in with wood filler using a flexible putty knife.

3. Sand the surface

Don a dust mask or respirator and hearing protection. Sand the timber flat areas with a random orbital sander and 200–280 grit sandpaper. This helps the wooden surface to bond with the paint. Sanding by hand is better for uneven surfaces such as you find on furniture.

4. Clean off dust

Using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove the dust and wipe with a damp cloth.

5. Prime wooden surface

Mix your primer well and apply with a brush or roller. When it has dried, check to see if the primer is transparent or streaky; if so, apply the primer a second time. A roller will prime a flat surface more quickly and leave it with a smoother finish.

6. Sand again

Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand down the dry surface again. Apply light pressure so that gouges don’t form.

7. Clean again

Use a vacuum cleaner and cloth as before to wipe away the dust.

8. Paint the surface

Foam-density rollers are useful for painting large surfaces. Insert a paint tray liner into the paint tray, then pour in paint so that it

fills the tray less than halfway. Gently dab the roller into the paint and roll the paint up and down the slope of the tray a few times to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. Roll the paint lightly onto the wooden surface. A high-density foam roller gives better coverage with thinner latex paint than with oil-based paints.

Paintbrushes are better for fiddlier jobs like window frames and furniture. Insert the bristles of the brush into the paint can just a third of their length each time you need more paint. Once on the wooden surface, stroke the brush in a parallel direction to the wood grain. Use short strokes. Keep a wet edge at all times so that you don’t leave overlapping marks.

For a more professional appearance, you could try spraying the surface rather than using a paint brush.

Do not be tempted to apply a second coat of paint after this coat has dried, as this will cause the paint to tear.

9. Sand the first coat

The way to achieve a smoother finish is to sand and paint one more time. When the first coat had dried, sand as before. This will flatten any bumps or inconsistencies introduced by the roller or paintbrush.

Gently sand by hand with 220-grit sandpaper. If using an orbital sander, attach the sandpaper and run it as lightly as possible over the surface. Do not apply any other weight except that of the sander itself.

After sanding, bunch up a cloth. Keeping it loose, run it lightly over the surface. If you apply too much pressure, the cloth ‘s surface may embed itself onto the wood.

10. Apply a second coat of paint

Apply a second coat with the roller or brush, and let dry, preferably overnight. Paint is more durable the longer it is left to dry.

DIY accounting vs hiring an accountant: make the right choice for your business

ACCOUNTANT

When you’re starting out as a small business owner, the temptation is to go DIY with your accounting. Hiring a professional accountant or tax adviser costs money and that’s an overhead that you can remove by doing all the financial management yourself, right?

But is DIY accounting the most sensible option for your business? And why might partnering with an experienced accountant be a valuable investment in your future?

The 5 big challenges of managing your own accounts

At the initial stages of founding your business, you might think that raising a few invoices, paying a few supplier bills and making sure there’s cash in the bank is well within your abilities.

However, as the business grows, and you take on more customers and employees, your finances are likely to get far more complicated – not to mention far more time-consuming. So, should you still be managing your accounts solo at this important stage of your growth?

Here are five of the common challenges of going down the DIY accounting route:

1. The knowledge gap – grasping the finer points of accounting principles and tax regulations is complex. If you try to navigate these financial complexities without the right knowledge and experience, you greatly increase the risk of errors, missed deductions, poor recordkeeping and non-compliance with company tax law for your territory.

2. The drain on your time – Managing bookkeeping, payroll, day-to-day accounting and tax filings takes a lot of time out of your week. For example, recent stats show that Aussie business owners spend an average of 6 hours and 19 minutes per week on financial administration. If you’re spending a large chunk of your week working on finance admin, that’s time you’re NOT spending on growing the business. As an ambitious owner, you should be concentrating on business development and the other strategic tasks that will push your growth – not doing the books!

3. Staying up to date with the regulations - Company tax laws and accounting regulations change frequently. If you’re not on the ball

with the latest regulatory changes, there’s every chance that you’ll fail to meet your compliance duties. And, you may also miss out on the latest government incentives and tax reliefs too – financial perks that could well be the key to funding the next stage in your business expansion plans.

4. Anxiety about a company audit – going through a company audit from an external auditor can be stressful. Depending on the status of your business, you may well have to comply with the rules for regular auditing. But with no accountant, your record-keeping may be haphazard, making the job more difficult, timeconsuming and disruptive.

5. A lack of strategic insight – If you’ve never run a business before, it’s likely you’ll lack the awareness of how good financial management drives your strategic insight. The better your accounts, the higher the quality of your finance data, reporting and management information. And this data and reporting can be a goldmine of information when making big strategic decisions, setting budgets and forecasting cashflow etc.

How working with an accountant turns these challenges into business benefits

Having full responsibility for your own business finances is a major drain on your time as an owner and business leader. But the good news is that partnering with an accountant can very quickly lighten this load and get you back to focusing on your business. By engaging an accountant to take on your financial management, you get:

1. The knowledge of an experienced finance professional – when you hire an accountant, you add a financial expert to your team. They’ll help you navigate the complexity of accounting, will keep your records accurate and will make sure you comply with all relevant tax regulations. This minimises errors and maximises your deductions.

2. More time to focus on the business – by delegating your bookkeeping, payroll, accounting and tax filings to an accountant, you free up valuable time. This gives you more time in the day to talk to customers, develop growth strategies and build relationships with clients, partners, lenders and investors.

3. Stay ahead of the regulatory curve – a professional accountant knows exactly which legislative and regulatory changes are planned and will make sure you’re always ticking the right compliance boxes. They’ll also be aware of any new government tax deductions or funding incentives that may open up extra cash for your business plans.

4. Peace of mind when it comes to an audit – with an accountant managing your accounts, you can rest assured that you have the best possible record-keeping, reporting and financial compliance. This is a major bonus when you face an external audit process. Your accountant can even represent you during the audit process, cutting down the potential stress and keeping you focused on running the business.

5. Expert strategic guidance –accountants do way more than just crunching numbers. Your accountant will work with you to analyse your financial data, manage your cashflow, identify patterns and trends and provide the valuable insights you need to inform your decision-making. An accountant is a key part of your

management and strategic team, helping you drive the success, efficiency and profitability of your business.

A new vision and purpose

In a world where businesses often focus solely on profitability, we have decided to take a bold step with Elmedia Marketing towards making a meaningful impact. Having established the agency just under two years ago, we swiftly carved a niche for ourselves in the digital marketing realm. Offering website development, digital advertising, and a wholistic approach to businesses digital identity we have consistently prioritized tangible business growth. However, our recent pivot to focus on not-for-profits marks a significant evolution in our mission and vision.

From Profit to Purpose: Journey

Our decision to niche down into the notfor-profit sector is not merely a strategic business move but a heartfelt response

to a growing desire we’ve had to create a positive social impact. We wanted to do something that mattered, that had more meaning and purpose. While we are great at making money for people, it feels more rewarding to do it for those who need it most.

This shift was inspired by our recent successes with not-for-profits. By leveraging our expertise in Google Ads, we helped a not-for-profit organization capitalize on an ad-spend grant. The result was an exceptionally high clickthrough and conversion rate on their ads, which translated into a significant increase in donations. This success story underscored the potential for our skills to drive substantial positive outcomes for organizations dedicated to the greater good.

Our Strategies Tailored to Not-for-Profit

Our approach to supporting not-forprofits is comprehensive and tailored to

the unique challenges these organizations face. Our strategy is built on three core pillars:

1. A Comprehensive Marketing Audit: We begin by analysing the entire marketing approach of the notfor-profit. This includes a thorough audit of their digital presence to identify areas for improvement and opportunities for greater impact.

2. Affordable Full-Service Marketing: Understanding that many not-forprofits cannot afford a full-time marketing team, we step in to fill this gap. We act as an entire marketing department for a fraction of the cost, ensuring these organizations can access top-tier marketing services without breaking the bank.

3. Grant Assistance: To further support our clients, we assist in securing marketing-based grants. These grants are crucial for reaching new audiences and spreading the word about the invaluable work these organizations do.

A Vision for a Better Tomorrow

As we embrace this new direction, we are driven by a vision of using our skills and team for the betterment of society. This pivot not only enhances the impact of the not-for-profits we work with but also gives us with a greater sense of purpose. It’s about more than just making money; it’s about making a difference.

In a world where the lines between profit and purpose often blur, we want to stand out as a beacon of hope, like a city on a hill. Our journey from focusing on business growth to championing notfor-profits is a testament to the power of aligning professional expertise with social responsibility.

Knowing Your Subject

VIDEO PRODUCTION

When we go to make a video either on our smart devices, laptop or computer there are 2 key things we need to think about: what you are going to say and how you are going to say it. Both of these things can be overwhelming to think about especially when you aren’t confident in your delivery or if it’s a new service or product.

Consider starting with the idea

• Is it an informative video? Would you like to educate customers on how to use the product? Is it a sales video offering a discount of 10% with every purchase? Can the customer try before they buy?

Then what would you like to say about the product?

• Do you want to talk about the colours, the way it moves, the ergonomics, how unique it is, maybe even a special feature?

Once you have a clear idea and general flow of what you want to say, think about the tone you want to use. Will it be relaxed with lots of smiling? Do you want it to be informative but light-hearted? Would you like to use comedy or do you want it to be a hard sell?

Often we forget some simple and easy rules when making videos and feeling assured that we know what we are doing.

Rule

1 - KNOW YOUR SUBJECT

• Learn about the product

- How it works

• Play with it

- What does the bottle feel like etc

• Try it out

- How does it feel, the texture etc

• Get other some friends to use it

- Get feedback

• Become the subject matter expert

Rule 2 - BE AUTHENTIC

• Talk the way you talk, not the way you think you should talk. If you don’t it will look really awkward on the video

Rule 3 - BE CLEAR AND CONCISE

• Don’t speak too fast

• Get to the point quickly, especially if you want the video to be short

Rule 4 - BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU ARE SAYING

• If you don’t believe in the product then a customer won’t buy it

• The camera sees everything and it will see if you are not genuine

Product Marketing Alliance defines a Subject Matter Expert asare highly skilled people who’ve developed in-depth knowledge around a product, technology, or process. They tell clients how a product works and how it can help solve their challenges. A good subject matter expert is capable of translating all kinds of features, functions, and concepts into simple terms, sharing their own knowhow with clients.

This should be you. By following the simple above rules you will become the subject matter expert and be able to easily win clients and make great videos.

Quick Tip:

If you are time strapped most suppliers have “how to” videos that you can watch and refer customers too. Sometimes the suppliers will give you the video to use on your website - you just need to ask.

If you would like to know more about how Yes Today Media can help you become a subject matter expert or have questions… send us an email or call.

10 herbs that have been researched for anxiety

NATUROPATH

Anxiety disorders are often felt with symptoms such as worry, reduced concentration as well as with physical symptoms like insomnia, muscle tension, or digestive upsets. Pharmaceutical medications for anxiety usually target Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, but these medications can have significant side effects. A scientific study found 10 herbs to be effective in treating anxiety by regulating GABA, and I’ll break these herbs down into different categories so that they’re easier to understand.*

Just a quick warning about selfprescribing herbs at a therapeutic level. Usually, the amount you would have in a tea is a low enough dose that it is unlikely to cause any problems.

Some herbs are not meant to be taken long term, so always have your herbs checked with any medications you may be taking by a health care professional in case of interactions. If you do want to take therapeutic doses of herbs you would be best to get advice from a naturopath or herbalist, just to be sure of safety.

Anxiety with trouble sleeping

Hypnotic herbs: I know this sounds a bit weird and mystical, but it’s actually just language that is not used the way it used to be. In terms of herbs, this just means that they induce drowsiness or sleep. These are not like drugs used for sleeping in that there is no hangover effect the next day, you would generally take these before bed, have a nice deep sleep and wake refreshed. The following herbs are all hypnotic herbs with their other actions for anxiety listed beside them:

Hops - mild sedative

Kava – anxiolytic (alleviates anxiety), mild sedative, muscle relaxant

Passionflower - mild sedative, anxiolytic

Valerian - anxiolytic, mild sedative

Other herbs for anxiety

This next group of herbs cover a variety of actions. When I’m choosing a herb to go into a herbal medicine mix, I’m very aware of the other symptoms in the

person I’m treating. So, I would choose a different one depending on what else this person is presenting with.

• Chamomile - mild sedative

• Gotu kola - nervous system tonic, adaptogen

• Gingko - cognition enhancing, neuroprotective

• Withania - mild sedative, adaptogen

My favourite 2 herbs for anxiety

These next 2 herbs, I use a lot, the first one is calming to the digestive tract, I find it really effecting in cases of anxiety that presents itself with digestive issues, or it the person has digestive issues and anxiety, it also works really well. The second is my absolute go to for anxiety. It’s a nervous system tonic that’s calming, so it works to gently calm and relax the nervous system, bringing it into balance.

• Lemon balm - mild sedative

• Skullcap - nervous system tonic, mild sedative

Some of these herbs you will find available as teas. This is a safe low dose way to take herbs. You will need to have the tea more than once each day and for at least a month or so, to see some difference in your anxiety. For a therapeutic dose of herbs, a naturopath or herbalist can help make up an individual herbal mix.

The Nationals have had a major win in having the opposition commit to divestiture legislation as a weapon of last resort against supermarkets guilty of uncompetitive behaviour.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton announced the policy at a joint press conference with Nationals leader David Littleproud, who enthusiastically backs the policy, and shadow treasurer, Angus Taylor who was anxious to stress the checks that would apply to it.

Earlier, at the Coalition parties meeting, there was strong debate about the radical move, which some Liberals oppose on the grounds it would represent excessive government intervention.

In his recent report to the government on supermarket competition, former Labor minister Craig Emerson recommended against divestiture.

He said forced divestiture could have the perverse effect of leading to greater market concentration rather than reducing concentration. He quoted the National Farmers’ Federation which said forced divestiture was not its policy.

Littleproud said the opposition supported the government’s plan to make mandatory the current voluntary Food and Grocery Code of Conduct, which covers relations with suppliers, but wanted to see powers go further.

The Nationals leader pointed out the Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Gina CassGottlieb, had said divestiture powers would be “a good tool to have in the toolbox”.

Former Commission chairman Allan Fels wrote in The Conversation last month that Labor was the only political party not to support a divestiture power and said that might be because of pressure from the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.

While forcing supermarket chains to divest individual stores might not be practical, forcing them to divest arms such as petrol or liquor would be a potent threat, he argued.

Littleproud told the news conference the Coalition wanted a “range of penalties, scaling penalties, to change the culture, to make sure there is fairness and transparency from the farm gate to your plate”.

Taylor said it was a matter of getting the “balance right”.

There were “some important safeguards we’re building into this initiative that are crucial to ensure that the balance is right, and distinguish this from other proposals that have been running around,” he said.

The plan was based on section 46 of the Competition and Consumer Act, relating to the misuse of market power.

The opposition plan was confined to supermarkets and hardware retailers (notably Bunnings) and would only be applied where divestiture could lead to substantial improvement to competition, Taylor said.

A very real benefit would have to be proved that would help consumers, small businesses and farmers who supplied to the retailers.

A proposed divestiture would be required to pass a public interest test, showing there would not be job losses outweighing any of the benefits to consumers, farmers and small businesses.

It would need to go through a court. “It won’t be for politicians or regulators […] it’ll be for the courts to make those decisions,” Taylor said.

Greens spokesman Nick McKim said Labor was “now isolated as the only party allowing the big supermarket corporations to continue to misuse their market power and price-gouge Australian shoppers”.

Future Made in Australia Bill introduced Wednesday

The government will introduce its Future Made in Australia legislation on Wednesday.

In a statement Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers say the legislation is “all about unlocking private sector investment to build a stronger, more diversified and more resilient economy powered by renewable energy that creates secure, well-paid jobs around the country”.

They say the legislation will embed a disciplined approach for government investments under the scheme to ensure they made the most of Australia’s net zero potential.

“This package does three main things. It will legislate our new National Interest Framework, introduce a robust sector assessment process, and outline the Community Benefit Principles that will apply to investment decisions,”the statement says.

The national interest framework defines criteria for identifying where the government should invest. Read more

Our free SongMakers workshop is back this July, offering musicians aged between 16-21 the unmissable opportunity to collaborate with some of Australia’s most exciting hitmakers to write and record songs.

Following a sold out workshop in April, the two-day songwriting and production sessions from APRA AMCOS, proudly supported by the City’s Live and Local program and Creative Victoria, return to Customs House from 10am-4pm on 9-10 July.

Sixteen participants will be guided by three award-winning industry mentors with a wealth of experience in the music industry:

Anna Laverty

Anna Laverty is one of Australia’s finest production talents, with credits on projects by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Courtney Barnett, Meg Mac, Lady GaGa, G Flip, Montaigne, Ali Barter and Kira Puru. Honing her production and engineering skills under the tutelage of producers Paul Epworth (Adele) and Ben Hillier (Blur, U2), Anna worked on releases by Bloc Party and Depeche Mode at London’s Miloco Studios. She has received the inaugural Mushroom Music Producer Award and an Australia Council Fellowship.

Elizabeth Drummond

Melbourne-based artist/producer Elizabeth M. Drummond is a founder of Little May, which disbanded in 2019. Signed to Sony Music Publishing, Liz’s songs have amassed over 200 million streams on Spotify. Her tour credits include Rodriguez, The National, City & Colour, Mumford & Sons and she has recorded with Aaron Dessner (The National, Taylor Swift) in upstate New York. Her selfproduced debut EP was released in late 2022, via UK Label Young Poet.

Joel

Producer, rapper, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Joel Ma is recognised as a unique voice in the Australian music scene with a reputation for innovation and sonic experimentation. In 2002, he founded seminal alt-rap group TZU, who were at the forefront of an emerging Australian hip-hop and electronica sound. Under the moniker ‘Joelistics,’ his second album was described by Rolling Stone as “a celebration and mourning of the current state of the world, voiced by a smart, incisive writer and producer.”

GEELONG YOUTH HUB Being shaped by young people

Detailed design of a new youth hub in central Geelong is complete, shaped by the ideas and insights of more than 1100 local young people.

The City of Greater Geelong will open a youth hub in the Busport building on the corner of Gheringhap Street and Transit Place in January 2025.

The two-year pilot program is supported by $400,000 in funding from the Victorian Government.

An extensive City engagement process has seen 1226 people contribute their ideas about how the hub should look and what services and spaces should be included.

Of these, 1121 were young people between the ages of 12 and 25.

Based on these contributions, the hub will feature:

• an open plan area for socialising and group activities, which could also be set up with spaces for gaming and quiet time;

• a multi-purpose room suitable for a range of creative uses such as music and art;

• a kitchen, able to host cooking classes; and

• an accessible bathroom.

The look and feel of the interior will match the most popular descriptions from survey respondents, which included ‘welcoming’, ‘comfortable’, ‘warm’, ‘colourful’ and ‘casual’.

The activation of the hub will also be influenced by the input gathered during the engagement process.

Feedback suggested that young people most want the facility to feature opportunities to learn or practice skills (such as cooking, art and music), as well as mental health support, social ‘drop-in’ sessions, and employment assistance.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

“Young people have asked for this facility and from the outset we wanted to make it a place that they would want to come to.

This process has been incredibly valuable in helping to identify exactly what will make the youth hub a success, and how it can provide the most value to young people.”

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens

“Importantly, young people have been involved in the design of the Youth Hub, and the services it will provide.

I look forward to the opening of the hub, providing young people in Geelong a central space that services their needs and interests.”

To help the design process, the City’s youth development team also visited youth hubs in Richmond, Fitzroy, and Footscray, and engaged with staff from multiple youth service organisations.

A process to appoint a builder is now underway, with construction of the hub expected to begin in the coming months.

There will soon be an opportunity for young people to contribute their ideas about what the hub should be named.

The full engagement summary and further project updates are available at https://yoursay.geelongaustralia.com. au/YouthHub

The City’s 2022 and 2023 Youth Councils both strongly advocated for a youth hub in Geelong and played central roles in progressing the project, while the 2024 group have been active participants in the design process.

We need your help to design an awesome, fun, safe and inclusive youth hub for young people in Geelong!

LANDY FIELD REDEVELOPMENT GETS GO AHEAD

The City of Greater Geelong’s application for $5 million in Victorian Government funding to help redevelop the John Landy Athletics Field has been successful.

The funding, to be provided via the government’s Council Support Package for regional cities who were to have hosted the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adds to $5 million committed by the Council.

It means a planned $10 million redevelopment of Landy Field, including construction of a new two-storey pavilion, grandstand and other facility improvements, will go ahead.

The new pavilion will feature a competition office, public toilets, change rooms, canteen/kiosk, social and community room, meeting room and uniform store, as well as providing a main entry point to the complex.

In addition to the $10 million redevelopment, the City of Greater Geelong is carrying out a $1.5 million renewal of the athletics track.

The renewal works, fully funded by the Council, will see the installation of a brand new surface in blue and grey, plus relocation of the hammer and discuss cage to allow for more competition events to be carried out at the same time.

The renewal of the track will mean the facility retains its World Athletics Class 2 accreditation.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens:

The State Government is proud to invest $5 million to enable Landy Field to remain a premier regional athletics track in Victoria.

This athletic field is iconic in Geelong, and this funding will enable athletes, little athletic participants and their families, to have the facilities they deserve into the future.

Mayor Trent Sullivan:

Thank you to the Victorian Government for its major investment in this important Geelong sporting facility.

Today’s news is certainly welcomed and, combined with the Council’s matching funding, secures Landy Field’s future as a high quality regional and state level athletics centre.

The project will mean athletes using Landy Field will have access to a modern, fit-forpurpose pavilion, while spectators will be able to watch in the comfort of a brand new grandstand.

With athletics about to be in the spotlight via the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, it’s a hugely exciting time for the sport in Geelong.

EMPOWERING WOMEN TO THRIVE IN BUSINESS

The City of Greater Geelong has been successful in obtaining funding for three road safety projects under the annual Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Local Government Grant Program.

We’re one of 40 Victorian councils to receive grants for projects that focus on reducing crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists, who are most vulnerable to trauma on our roads.

Later this year, a raised wombat crossing will be unveiled on Batten Road in Armstrong Creek, between Central Road and Vaughan Drive near the Oberon High School entrance, to assist students and other community members crossing the road. The TAC is providing $52,000 towards the project and the City will match this contribution.

A joint project between the City and the Surf Coast Shire will see an options analysis conducted to investigate future safe cycling options between Geelong and Torquay. Both councils have each received a $30,000 grant.

Our grant will be used to develop several options for a safe cycle route from Geelong to Torquay, including concept plans and high level costings for each option.

Work to begin on indoor pool at Drysdale

The design of stage two of the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre in Drysdale will begin soon.

In a major milestone for the $40.3 million project, a funding agreement between the Australian Government and the City of Greater Geelong has been executed, paving the way for the start of the design process.

A concept for stage two, an indoor aquatic centre to be built alongside the 50-metre heated outdoor pool delivered in stage one, was endorsed by the Council last year.

Created with the help of a 12-member community advisory panel, the concept design includes:

• Eight-lane 25-metre pool

• Warm water pool

• Café and social space

• Gymnasium and group exercise studio/s

• Changing places changeroom

• Various associated facilities

The detailed design will ready the project for construction, expected to begin late in 2025.

Stage two is supported with $20 million from the Australian Government’s Priority Community Infrastructure Program.

The Victorian Government has also committed $20 million to the project, with the Council to contribute the remaining $300,000.

Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker, State Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant and Mayor Trent Sullivan visited the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre with members of the community advisory panel to celebrate the stage two milestone.

It’s expected the facility will be ready to open mid to late 2027.

Libby Coker:

“I am proud to support our communities on the north Bellarine who fought hard for an indoor pool and this announcement marks a significant milestone in fulfilling their vision.

These facilities will provide muchneeded services and access for older people, people with a disability, those with mobility issues and people undertaking rehabilitation from major injuries.

It will also provide more opportunities for learn-to-swim in facilities that meet the needs of our communities during the freezing winter months.

The increased accessibility and convenience will encourage a higher number of local residents to participate in healthy activity, enhancing the health, wellbeing and social cohesion of the community.”

Alison Marchant:

“Stage two of this project will create an Aquatic Centre that our community can be proud of with a range of facilities to fill the gap within the Bellarine Peninsula.”

Mayor Trent Sullivan:

“Thank you to the Australian and Victorian Governments for their major investment in this facility.

The 50-metre outdoor pool built as stage one has been a stunning success, and the community is now looking forward with great anticipation to the indoor component being added.

Stage two will broaden the use of the aquatic centre and ensure community members on the north Bellarine never have to travel outside their local area to access aquatic facilities they need.”

Construction begins on café extension at Geelong Botanic Gardens

Construction has started on a new covered verandah for the café in the iconic Tea House building within the Geelong Botanic Gardens.

Funded via the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, the café extension will provide customers a comfortable sheltered outdoor space to dine in.

Heritage Victoria issued the planning permit as Geelong Botanic Gardens and Eastern Park is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register with State Significance.

Prior to plans being submitted to Heritage Victoria, an x-ray of the ground was conducted to survey the tree root systems and ensure the new structure would avoid disturbing tree roots.

The café, known as WYM (Where You Meet), is located in the heart of the Geelong Botanic Gardens and offers a delightful space for friends and family to gather and enjoy a coffee as well as a variety of lunch delicacies and locally sourced treats.

Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan

“The Geelong Botanic Gardens is one of the region’s most beautiful green spaces and I encourage everyone to explore the trails and enjoy a visit to the café.

Eastern Park and the Botanic Gardens have significant historical importance for the state of Victoria.

The new café verandah will provide covered outdoor seating for customers, making WYM an even more enjoyable place to meet and relax in the gardens.”

Geelong based construction company TRAK Constructions has been engaged to complete the project.

Spanning 3.6 hectares, the Geelong Botanic Gardens feature intensely cultivated spaces dominated by mature 19th-century tree plantings, including rare exotic species alongside more recent additions.

The fourth oldest botanic garden in Australia, the gardens are home to some

of the finest examples of trees in Victoria, many of which are listed on the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Register of Significant Trees.

Councillor Eddy Kontlelj, Chair of the Active Spaces portfolio

The gardens have evolved and developed over time and offer something for everyone to enjoy.

Free guided tours from The Friends of Geelong Botanic Gardens are available to take you through the gardens’ rich history, including original heritage buildings and significant tree collections.

It serves as a vital green space for the community, offering a peaceful environment to explore and learn about botanical history and conservation.

Entry to the Geelong Botanic Gardens is free and it is open every day of the year from 8am to 5pm (8am to 7pm during Daylight Savings hours).

WYM cafe will operate regular trading hours throughout the construction works.

2024 TAX UPDATES

A recent case has highlighted that early payment of superannuation leading to excess concessional contributions may not be considered a special circumstance allowing reallocation under s 291-465 (2) of the ITAA 1997. With the concessional contributions threshold about to increase, Oldenburger v Commissioner of Taxation reminds employers to revisit their superannuation contribution strategies to avoid tax impositions.

In this case, the applicant applied for a special consideration after receiving a tax bill for exceeding the concessional contributions threshold, which was denied by the Commissioner and later the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).

From 1 July 2024, the concessional contributions cap is set to increase from $27,500 to $30,000.

Announced: 4-May-2023 Updated: 7-May-2024

The Federal government has announced a one-year extension to the increase in the instant asset write-off threshold to $20,000.

Announced as part of the 2024 Federal Budget, this increased threshold applies for the 2024-25 income year and aims to help small businesses with improved cash flows.

An immediate deduction for eligible assets (applied on per asset basis) will become available for small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million.

Eligible assets must be first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025.

the lens by Federal government to ensure foreign residents are paying their fair share of tax in Australia.

Specified taxable Australian property (TAP) defined under ITAA 1997 s 855-15, which makes foreign residents subject to CGT will be reviewed and broadened.

The principal asset test to determine the indirect interest of a foreign resident in a TAP will now be subject to a 365-day testing period rather than being tested at a "point in time".

Commencing from 1 July 2025, these reforms aim to provide certainty to foreign investors by aligning Australian tax law closely with the OECD standards and international best practice.

2024 TAX UPDATES

The Commissioner gains power to not apply refunds against old tax debts

Amendments to tax legislation have been announced in the 2024 Federal Budget that will give the Commissioner of Taxation a discretion to not use a taxpayer's refund to offset old tax debts.

As per s 8AAZL of the Tax Administration Act 1953, the Commissioner is required to apply refunds in the running balance account (RBA) to offset current or anticipated RBA and non-RBA tax debts.

This discretion will apply to individuals, small businesses and not-for-profits, and will maintain the Commissioner's current administrative approach.

This announcement applies to old tax debts put on hold by the Commissioner prior to 1 July 2017. After the enactment of legislation, we expect the Commissioner to release regulatory resources in relation to the practical application of this announcement.

Increased flexibility for Carer payment recipients

As part of the 2024 Federal Budget, an announcement may make more carers eligible for government financial assistance and support.

The eligibility requirements will change from 20 March 2025, where the existing 25 hour per week participation limit to receive Carer Payment will be amended to 100 hours over 4 weeks.

Also, currently the participation limit applies to employment, volunteering and study. From 20 March 2025, only employment will count against the participation limit.

Further adjustments will be made, meaning that if an individual goes over these limits, the ramifications relating to future support will not be as severe.

A 2024 Federal Budget announcement will provide additional support for businesses who participate in the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System.

The last adjustment to this scheme was announced in the March 2022 budget, where the Phase Two incentive system payments would begin reducing from 1 July 2024.

The new announcement states that the reduction in incentive payments will not reduce for apprentices, trainees and their employers in priority occupations.

As a result, the expected Phase Two incentive system payments for apprentices in a priority occupation will increase from $3,000 to $5,000 if it was due to received after 1 July 2024. Also, if an apprentice in a priority occupation is hired after 1 July 2024, there will not be a reduction in that incentive payment either.

The proposed expansion of Part IVA deferred Australian Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme payments to be adjusted

Announced as part of the 2023 Federal Budget, was a proposed expansion of the general anti-avoidance provisions for income tax.

This announcement intended to allow schemes that achieve an Australian income tax benefit to come into the scope of Part IVA, even if the dominant purpose was to reduce foreign income tax.

This announcement was set to apply from 1 July 2024, however, as per the 2024 Federal budget this has been pushed to income years commencing after amended legislation receives royal assent, regardless of whether the scheme was entered into before that date.

In an initiative to promote women’s economic equality, the Labor government has announced plans to pay superannuation on paid parental leave (PPL) for government-funded payments from 1 July 2025.

If enacted, this measure will provide parents who access the PPL government scheme with super contributions paid into their nominated super account equivalent to 12% of their leave pay.

An expansion to Australia’s PPL is also currently before the Senate, which will give families an additional 6 weeks of PPL, increasing to 22 weeks from July 2024, 24 weeks from July 2025, and 26 weeks from July 2026.

This measure is currently in the announcement stage and requires parliamentary approval to become law.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL

NOT-FOR-PROFIT OF THE MONTH

YOUR LOCAL BIKE SHOP WITH A DIFFERENCE

Did you know Good Cycles is more than just a bike shop? Good Cycles is a not-for-profit, job focused social enterprise supporting young people in securing safe and meaningful jobs. We strive to deliver jobs that break barriers to employment, nurture our community and planet, and create good cycles of change.

80% of young people struggle to find or keep jobs. Our vision is for everyone to have access to meaningful work in businesses that prioritise the well-being of their employees and their communities.

Our Youth Employment Program (YEP) uses a work-first approach, offering jobs to young people aged 18-29, with real income alongside tailored coaching and support. Our approach is offered with personal choice and an inclusive workplace to deliver technical and transferable skills.

Good Cycles aims to have 30% of our staff within YEP, with all receiving adult wages and regular shifts. A combination of longterm employment and support builds confidence, stability and networks, enabling young people to continue to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential.

We began in 2013 inspired by the bicycle to build a workforce for change. Today, we have four retail bike stores in Victoria, including our Geelong store.

More than just bikes, we now also contribute in other industries employing almost 200 staff across three states. We’ve replaced tasks that traditionally used utes or trucks with electric and cargo bikes, such as commercial asset maintenance, gardening, car cleaning services, deliveries and organic waste management.

We use social and environmental innovation to deliver our impact across four divisions:

• Good Bikes - our retail shops, located in Geelong, Melbourne CBD, Docklands and Brunswick. Each store offers new bikes and a range of cycling parts and accessories, with professional mechanics operating in full service workshops.

• Good People - we provide managed workforce partnerships to organisations that align with our own mission, blending general staffing with young people who are supported through our Youth Employment Program.

• Good Deliveries - we offer deliveries and logistics, pioneering low-emission logistics through cargo and e-bikes, reducing traffic congestion and providing job opportunities for at-risk youth. Our team are experts in the ‘last mile’ delivery and sustainable services, including food organics collection and solar bins inspections.

and asset maintenance and inspections.

Our Impact

Young people are more than twice as likely as older people to experience unemployment with a range of barriers to entering the labour market, such as lack of work experience, longterm unemployment, insecure housing, early school leaving/ low literacy; or lived experience of mental health challenges, disability or serious health issues, family violence or justice system experience. Of our YEP participants in 2023, 72% had 2 or more barriers to employment while 56% had 3 or more barriers to employment. Each barrier multiplies the effect of disadvantage on young people.

In 2023, we had 50 staff participating in our Youth Employment Program. The YEP participants came from a range of communities including culturally and linguistically diverse, refugee backgrounds, LGBTIQ+ and First Nations.

The outcomes from our 2023 YEP Impact Report saw:

100% received adult award wages

100% reported increasing their skills relevant to future employment

100% reported improved peer relationships

92% reported increased sense of self-confidence

67% reported feeling more better able to keep up with financial commitments

• Good Spaces - we specialise in commercial gardening and landscaping services, large scale road vegetation and litter control

Changing lives. Changing communities.

We recognise young people who face disadvantage or marginalisation are at risk of unemployment and disengagement from society and the economy in the long term. We provide them with job readiness and coaching, on the job exposure, structured roles with progressive development and job seeking support and advocacy.

Alongside our retail stores, the YEP participants are employed on adult award wages as part of teams that are delivering scopes of work for Good Cycles’ contracted commercial partners. Long term partners include DM Roads, Housing First, Fire Rescue Victoria, Greater Melbourne Cemeteries Trust, Citywide, Riverlee Property, Frasers Property, Fulton Hogan, St Vincent Hospital, Lendlease, Lime and ISS Facility Services.

Maintaining employment for six months is a significant milestone for people who have faced barriers to employment. Long term employment builds confidence and stability, enabling people to achieve their full potential. In 2023, 97% of YEP participants maintained employment with Good Cycles for more than 6 months.

Filling the Love Tank

It’s said that figuratively speaking, we each have a ‘Love Tank’ that needs to be topped up on a regular basis. This is particularly true and easily observed in our children. Children function best when their tank is well filled or even overflowing.

The tanks can be filled through positive connections in the form of kind actions, affirming words, physical affection, quality time, receiving presents etc.

The tanks are depleted through the normal daily routines of work, school, chores and general living. But they can also be drained dry very quickly by negatives that may come from corrections, criticism, unkind words, neglect, conflict etc.

The difficulty is, in being good parents, we need to correct our children. This has the potential to drain the tank dry, so that our children are running on empty. And once the tank is empty our children feel crushed and are in no condition to handle any sort of correction or even something as neutral as guidance or direction. At this point it’s like we’re fighting a losing battle.

The simplistic answer to this difficulty, is to keep their Love Tanks filled. ‘Easier said than done,’ I hear you say.

One way behaviourists suggest we navigate this, is by using the principle that for every one negative or correcting comment that we make, we should be making six positive building comments or actions. In this way the Love Tank is kept topped up. This means our children can remain in a positive frame of mind and will be better able to handle the corrections and discipline that are so often necessary to raise a healthy child.

What sort of things will fill my child’s Love Tank the best?

A good way to keep our child’s Love Tank topped up is to determine what their dominant love language(s) is and try to build them up through activities that fit that love language.

All the best everyone. Rob. (LPS Chaplain) Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.au

How to protect your business against theft

Your business is your livelihood. And while every business is different, security measures are pretty much universal. It’s important to know the practical, proactive steps you can take to protect your business and keep yourself, your staff and customers safe.

Crime costs businesses billions of dollars each year – whether that be through burglary, robbery, shoplifting, property damage, scams, employee theft, fraud or data breaches.

It can be particularly devastating to a small business, who can lose customers, staff, precious assets and money, let alone the motivation to recover and move on.

Despite the challenges in funds and staff numbers that many small businesses face, there are cost-effective strategies you can take to protect your business from crime.

1. Set up a security system

Installing a monitored security system will not only help you and police in the event of a theft, it will also act as a deterrent for potential thieves.

Make sure cameras are visible or display signs that tell customers that a security system is in place.

2. Make sure the outside of your business protects the inside

Make sure your business is visible by using good exterior lighting.

Install sensor lights in dark areas around the premises so they light up if someone approaches.

Keep any outside shrubbery neat and tidy.

Remove potential climbing aids like skip bins, trees or ladders near windows or roofs.

Consider installing bollards across the front of your business to stop possible ram raids.

3. Use your entries and exits

Use electronic sensors to alert staff when someone enters or exits the business.

Avoid placing large, solid items, like blinds, shelves or signage near the entry to keep the view in to and out of your business clear and eliminate any potential hiding spots for thieves.

4. Work with staff to secure your business

Train staff on security protocols so they know what to do to help secure your business.

Provide staff with written procedures so they can correctly follow any security measures you have in place.

Ensure staff know what to do when closing the business prevent after-hours break-ins. Often thieves target businesses outside of trade hours, as there won’t be people around.

Educate staff in the best practices for managing stock, customers and payments.

5. Control access

Make sure all doors and windows have strong, good quality locks, including skylights and access holes.

Regular re-key locks and update any access codes.

Keep track of which third parties, such as cleaners or contractors, have keys or access cards.

6. Get to know your business neighbours

Engaging with your local business community can be a powerful preventive measure. When people come together as a community, they not only feel safer, they are safer.

Reach out to your neighbouring businesses and connect via a private Facebook Group or What’s App. Stay in touch, keep an eye out for one another and report any suspicious behaviour to police.

Consider forming a Neighbourhood Watch business group for mutual support and shared strategies.

We would be happy to meet with you to provide advice and motivation. Email ceo@nhw.com.au for more information.

Transform young live with the gift of Sail Training

Imagine the surge of pride Lauren felt as she coiled the thick, heavy handmade rope on the Enterprize tall ship, her confidence growing as she looped the rope around the cleat and maintained tension on the sails and rigging.

As the wooden ship swayed through Port Phillip Bay, she was ready to release the rope at a moment’s notice. Lauren didn’t just manage the ropes; she managed to conquer her fears and doubts

A week ago, Lauren was a different person—struggling with confidence, grappling with social anxiety, and unsure of her path. Today, she’s empowered, resilient, and inspired, thanks to the life-changing experience aboard our tall ship

Many young people from diverse and disadvantaged groups lack the opportunity to realise their potential. Some turn to crime and drugs. Please donate today because we can’t afford to let this crisis continue.

As a small volunteer-run charity, we rely on your kindness to continue offering these incredible opportunities to marginalised young people facing unprecedented challenges. Your donation can make a world of difference:

• $50 covers the cost of a day’s meals for a young trainee

• $100 helps fund essential sailing equipment such as harnesses, lifejackets, and wet weather gear

• $250 sponsors a day of training for one young person

• $500 helps fund a ‘living history’ schools education lesson

• $1000 funds a full four-day voyage, transforming another young life like Lauren’s

Will you help us foster a sense of genuine connection and belonging in today’s society?

Sail training isn’t just about learning to sail. It’s about instilling teamwork, resilience, critical thinking, and a strong work ethic. For Lauren, it meant discovering a newfound strength and self-belief that she never knew she had.

Lauren’s words speak volumes:

“I met and interacted with people of all ages, worked as a team, and grew my confidence and independence. This voyage was life-altering.”

Will you help young people learn to communicate clearly, delegate tasks, and work together? Sail training requires them to solve problems, make decisions under pressure, take the initiative, and lead by example. Please give what you can.

With your support, the Enterprize can expand its youth and schools programs and make a difference in the lives of young people. Every dollar you give helps young people build skills and gain experiences that shape their futures.

heartfelt gratitude,

Sail Training Crew

P.S. Your generosity can turn a young person’s life around. Please donate today and be part of something incredible!

P.P.S. Enterprize is a registered charity. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB BOWLS

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

FC LEOPOLD

FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.

We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town.

FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions.

FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player.

Like the page to keep up to date with the clubs progress as exciting things are happening with lights and a massive COGG funded pavilion project.

WOMEN OF WIT WOMEN OF WIT

Worlding Exhibition

WORLDING presents the works of twelve national and international contemporary artists that speak to a mobile understanding of how artists partake in the designing, building, and organising of a personal world through their practice.

Featuring works by Brook Andrew, Madison Bycroft, Katthy Cavaliere, Daniel Crooks, Julie Davies, Stano Filko, Patrick Pound, Alex Rizkalla, Si Yi Shen, Kieren Seymour, Batia Suter, and Tarryn Love

Under the curation of Platform Arts’ Dr Amber Smith, the ‘worlding’ practices proposed in this exhibition reflect how artists un/build worlds and re/imagine the world as-it-is, with consideration to alternate realities, memory fields, truth-telling, and material-semiotic worlds.

The mediums span video and digital media as well as object-based and archival practices, foregrounding First Nations and Diasporic perspectives, which together examine how everyday objects and technologies infiltrate artistic practice by co-opting and subverting these materialities.

Another night of laughs is coming with the best laugh out loud comedians touring the national stages.

As every year there’ll be celebrities, rising stars and a special local guest or two hitting the stage.

Yep, the Women of Wit will be tickling your funny bones at the Potato Shed again in 2024.

With the 2024 line-up will be announced closer to the show date.

Expect to be impressed.

At the age of 21 Phil Hulands was diagnosed with Behcet’s Disease and at first had minimal symptoms and it disappeared after 3 or 4 months.

At 26 Phil’s condition reappeared and took away the use of his right leg and caused multiple blood clots that travelled to his lungs. Phil was told he would never walk again, even though he was the only person in Australia with this condition and there is no local expertise. This news was devastating to Phil’s mental health and general outlook on life.

In 2024, 12 years after his illness reappeared Phil started working with his new Coach, James Jelley at Complete Health Geelong and over a period of 3 or 4 weeks regained the ability to walk short distances unaided as well as perform a number of new exercises whilst standing.

We are looking for support for Phil to travel overseas and receive stem cell treatment to his legs to help reverse the 12 years of wasting to his muscles, tendons, ligaments and nervous system.

Phil has lost 12 years of his life to this illness and now as a husband and father to two young boys is determined to fight back.

Hall of Fame | An Insight Into the mind of Harry Taylor

Harry Taylor has provided insight into what made him one of the best defenders of the modern era

Harry Taylor has provided insight into what made him one of the best defenders of the modern era, opening up on what inspired him throughout his 280-game career.

The champion defender was inducted into the Geelong Football Club Hall of Fame on Saturday, winning two premierships and two All-Australian selections during 13 seasons with the Cats.

From keeping ham in his socks to eating spaghetti before games, Taylor was renowned for trying some intriguing tactics both on and off the field.

Taylor spoke during the Hall of Fame dinner, touching on his mentality as a player and how he drove himself to be better every day.

“One thing I am proud of is I tried to explore as many different ways to get better as I could,” Taylor said.

“I tried things like eating spaghetti half an hour before a game, trying to watch a movie before a final and getting there right on the knocker before we started.

“I really wanted to be as good a teammate as I could, which meant sometimes going outside the box and trying some different things.

“It didn’t always work, but I sit back now and I am proud that I tried a lot of different ways to improve.

“We had a great competitive group of people, we were all trying to get better and I was really wanting to be part of that journey.

“We put on the jumper, we go out there and compete as hard as we can, then we walk away from the field and we can be who we are, that is a real point of difference for this organisation.”

Taylor was inducted into Geelong’s Hall of Fame on Saturday alongside Chris Scott and Travis Varcoe, while Cameron Ling was elevated to legend status

It was a fitting tribute to some of the all-time greats, specifically those involved in the 2007 to 2011 era that helped the Cats win three premierships in five years.

Taylor opened up on the 2009 Grand Final in particular, where he played an instrumental role in the result by restricting Nick Riewoldt.

“I was praying for rain for around 48 hours leading into that game,” Taylor said.

“I remember it was probably the toughest game of football I have ever played in, the Grand Final itself was just relentless.

“You normally find there are moments in games where the pressure might drop and you can take a breath, it didn’t feel like there was any in that game.

“I came to the bench at one point, just out of pure exhaustion and Andrew Mackie ran on and took Riewoldt for me for a few minutes.

“It was a hell of a day, but to win the game after losing the year before was justification that I was lucky to be playing in an amazing team.”

HALL OF FAME | INDUCTEES INTERVIEW

Anthony Hudson speaks to Travis Varcoe, Chris Scott and Harry Taylor after that were inducted into Geelong’s Hall of Fame at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night.

Thorne Joins Cats AFLW Squad

Geelong Cats have signed Caitlin Thorne as a replacement player for the 2024 AFLW season.

Geelong Cats have signed Caitlin Thorne as a replacement player for the 2024 AFLW season.

Caitlin’s addition is due to Erin Hoare being moved to the inactive list, with the ruck announcing her retirement from AFLW earlier this week.

Thorne, who has been part of the strong Box Hill Hawks VFLW side for the past two seasons, can play across half-back and through the midfield, with her run and

carry and ability to drive the ball long up the ground assets to her game.

The 20-year-old played her junior football in Queensland and was part of the Gold Coast Suns Academy, earning selection in the 2022 Under 18 Queensland State Team.

it is good for our midfielders without Cam Guthrie and without Paddy Dangerfield to stand up.”

While still an underage player, Thorne played senior football with Bond University in the QAFLW, and was named in the 2022 Team of the Year in the backline.

Thorne moved to Victoria last year and began her VFLW career, playing 13 games with the Hawks in her debut season, averaging 12.2 disposals, 4 tackles and 2.7 marks a game.

This season, Thorne has impressed with her work on the wing and taken her game to another level, averaging 15.7 disposals, 7.1 tackles and 3.2 marks a game.

Geelong Cats Assistant General Manager of Football Brett Johnson said the Cats were thrilled to welcome Thorne to the AFLW squad.

“Caitlin has demonstrated great potential in both the QAFLW and VFLW, showcasing versatility across midfield and defensive positions,” Johnson said.

“Despite her youth, Caitlin brings valuable senior football experience to our team. We eagerly anticipate her transition into the AFLW with Geelong, where she will continue to evolve and refine her game.”

Geelong’s 2024 NAB AFLW Season kicks off at GMHBA Stadium on 31 August. Be One in Hoops in 2024 and sign-up as a Cats Member today.

SARAH ELSWORTHYIS UNITED

Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is pleased to announce the next player signing for our inaugural WNBL season, Sarah Elsworthy.

The 5 foot 7 guard, and captain of our NBL1 Geelong United Women’s squad reenters the league after previously spending 4 years with the Adelaide Lightning from 2016-20.“Getting my second chance in the WNBL was something I thought I’d never get,” Sarah said. “Playing in the first Geelong United WNBL team in a community I really care about, it’s such a great opportunity.”

Sarah, who thrives on the court in being (in her own words) a defensive pest, has spent another season putting up great numbers in the NBL1. With current season averages of 14.3 points, 3.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game, Sarah will be a handy addition to the inaugural Geelong United WNBL squad – “I just want to be a great teammate and work hard. I’m really looking forward to being a part of something so special for Geelong,” she said.

Head Coach Chris Lucas, who has coached Sarah previously during their run together in Adelaide, is excited to link back up for her reentry into the league – “Sarah’s consistency this NBL1 season has been tremendous,” Chris Said. “Her defensive pressure has always been her strength, but there’s aspects of her game that have made significant improvement. She’s found ways to improve her offensive game – Her penetration game has improved, her passing and three point shot have improved, she just works extremely hard and will play her role within the team perfectly.”

As someone who we’re now happy to claim as a Geelong local, Sarah is ready to get stuck into her new opportunity and welcome her new teammates to Geelong – “Obviously I’m not from here originally, but being part of this community for a number of years now, I’m proud to represent this region and this club,” she said. “It’s all about valuing and playing for the jersey. We now get to create that team culture and pride in playing for Geelong United, and represent the region like it should be represented.”

Please join us in welcoming our newest addition to our WNBL roster, Sarah Elsworthy.

KEELY FROLINGIS UNITED

Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is pleased to announce the next player signing for our inaugural WNBL season, Keely Froling.

The 6 foot 2 forward started her WNBL journey in 2011 in her hometown of Townsville, and will join us after another run with the Australian Women’s National Team, The Opals with whom she has recently flown to Japan with to compete ahead of this years Olympics in Paris.

Whilst exciting times lie ahead for Keely on the world stage, she’s also just as excited to be a part of Geelong United’s maiden WNBL side – “It’s special I think to be a part of

that first side,” Keely said. “Obviously I enjoyed my time in Melbourne last year with Chris (Lucas), and I think we’ll recruit some really good players and good people.”

Head Coach Chris Lucas was a key factor in Keely’s decision to sign on with the team, as he’s someone who has been part of her WNBL career for a many years – “I played under Chris last year in Melbourne and many years ago in Townsville. I think we have a great relationship and I work well under him, so I’m excited to have another season with Chris and hopefully win a championship for Geelong.”

Chris shares Keely’s excitement, and is extremely happy that she’s signed on to work with him again – “I’m really pleased to have Keely on board. Signing her was a no brainer – She was the first player I contacted. The standards of the program need to be set in the first year and she will lead by example with the bar she sets for herself and her teammates. It really puts us in a great position for our first year.”

Speaking on being part of that first year of a brand new WNBL team, Keely is looking forward to the prospect of starting from scratch – “We now get to establish those really good core values early,” she said. “It’s about building a really great franchise that is known as one of the best in Australia, we do everything right, we play hard and showcase great basketball.”

It’s not just about the on court side of things though for Keely, who also looks to build a connection with the community everywhere she plays – “I want to be a massive part of the community, and have us be role models for kids coming up through Geelong United Basketball. Regional teams for me have always been the most special ones that I’ve played for because you do have that connection with the community. I’ve been to Geelong a few times and always appreciated the NBL1 teams and their support, and the lifestyle there in summer, I’m really looking forward to that.”

Please join us in welcoming our newest addition to our WNBL roster, Keely Froling.

geelong waterfront

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront

poppy kettle playground

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is the one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK GEELONG

Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill once of Geelong’s historic places to visits. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

Geelong arts & cultural precinct

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

western beach

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach

ripplesside park

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.

Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.

The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.

The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

steampacket gardens

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

the carousel

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive allweather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

old geelong gaol

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

AGE PENSION

The age pension is income support paid by the government with the aim of ensuring all retirees have a minimum level of retirement income.

A person may be eligible for the age pension if they meet the following three tests:

• Are age pension age

• Satisfy residency rules

• Have income and assets below the cut-out thresholds

The payment rates and thresholds are indexed each quarter and current rates are available from a financial planner or Centrelink.

If receiving the age pension, all changes to personal and financial circumstances need to be advised to Centrelink. This includes switching investments, gifting money or changes to personal circumstances e.g. separating from a partner.

Age Pension Age

Age pension age is determined by your date of birth as shown in the following table.

Residency Rules

To be eligible a person must usually have been an Australian resident for at least 10 years, with at least five of these years in one continues period.

Agreements wxist with some countries which may help a person to quality for the age pension with less than 10 years residency. Details can be checked with Centrelink.

Income and Assets test

If eligible to apply, the amount of pension payable is calculated under two means tests - the income test and assets test. The test that results in the lower rate of payment is the one that applies.

Income Test

If income is below a certain amount (lower threshold) the full age pension is payable under the income test. The pension will reduced by $0.50 per fortnight (single or couple combined) for each $1.00 of income over the threshold. No pension is payable if income reaches the upper cut-off threshold.

The lower thresholds are indexed on 1 July each year. The cutoff thresholds also increase on 20 March and 20 September in line with payment increases.

Assessable income may not be the same as actual income or taxable income. Specific rules apply to determine how much income is assessed on some investments. The most common rule is deeming, and this is explained below. The rules for how other sources of income are assessed can be checked with a financial planner or Centrelink.

Assets Test

Assets need to be below a certain amount (lower threshold) to qualify for the full age pension under the assets test. The pension will reduce by $3.00 per fortnight (single or couple combined) for each $1,000 of assets over the threshold. No pension is payable once assets reach the upper cut-off threshold.

The lower thresholds are indexed on 1 July each year. The cutoff thresholds also increase in March and September in line with pension increases.

Assets are assessed at net market value but some assets are exempt, such as the home and superannuation (accumulation phase) under age pension age.

Deeming Rules

Investments classified as ‘financial assets’ will be subject to the deeming rules to determine the assessable income for the income test. The actual income is irrelevant.

• Financial assets include:

• Cash

• Bank accounts/term deposits

• Debentures and bonds

• Shares

• Investments in managed funds

• Insurance bonds

• Account Based Pensions (special rules may apply if purchased before 1 January 2015)

• Superannuation balances if you are over age/service pension age

• Loans

• Excess gifts over $10,000 per annum or $30,000 per rolling five year period

The value of your financial assets is added together and a deemed rate of interest (set by the government) is applied.

Pension Concession Card

A Pensioner Concession Card is available if you receive the age pension and entitles you to reduced-cost medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

You may also be entitled to various concessions from the Australian Government. These could include:

• Bulk billing for doctor’s appointments (this is your doctor’s decision)

• Higher refunds for medical expenses through the Medicare Safety Net

• Assistance with hearing services

You may also be entitled to various concessions from state and territory governments and local councils. These could include:

• Reductions on property and water rates

• Reductions on energy bills

• Reduced fares on public transport

• Reductions on motor-vehicle registration

• Free rail journeys

Other Entitlements

A pension supplement is added to the pension payable to help with living expenses. A person who is renting a home may also be eligible for Rent Assistance to help with the cost of renting.
