For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. LABOR WINS 4

FIND GEELONG | JUNE 2022

www.findgeelong.com.au

- What Does That Mean For Australia? By Warren Strybosch

The Labor Party’s victory ends almost a decade of conservative government. In a triumphant speech to supporters in Sydney, Labor leader Anthony Albanese boldly promised action on global warming, indigenous rights and sluggish wage growth. He said he wanted to “promote unity and optimism, not fear and division.” In his victory address, Albanese said Australia – which currently relies on coal for most of its electricity - has the opportunity to make fundamental changes. “Together we can end the climate wars. Together we can take advantage of the opportunity for Australia to be a renewable energy superpower,” Albanese said. “Together we can work in common interests with business and unions to drive productivity, lift wages and profits.” From humble beginnings living with just his mother in state-subsidized housing, Albanese will be his country’s 31st prime minister. He said he hoped his journey would inspire “Australians to reach for the stars.”

eligible to vote, Labor picked up a large percentage of preference votes from the Coalition who placed Labor ahead of Greens. It is estimated around a third of voters did not support either of the two main parties. Analysts have said non-aligned lawmakers, many of whom are women who are seeking action on climate change and integrity in politics, could wield significant power in the new parliament. Australia’s outgoing center-right coalition government suffered a humiliating defeat in the polls and Scott Morrison has stepped aside as leader. The Liberals will need to take time to consider where they went wrong. Was it simply that they had been in government for 10 years and it was time to have a change or is there other greater underlining issues that the Liberals will need to combat before they return to the polls in four year’s time. The final win for the Labor Party comes as Mr Albanese announces his ministry, following the first Labor caucus of the new government.

The 47th Parliament of Australia will be made up of 77 Labor seats, 58 Coalition seats, four Greens seats and 12 other crossbenchers.

Labor had enough seats to govern in its own right, but with 76 it would have needed to find a speaker from the crossbench.

Whilst Labor party only received about 33% of the primary votes from the more than 17 million Australians who were

“For the last two parliaments, for the majority of the time, the government, the previous government had the majority

but they still needed to talk to the crossbench because they are very tight numbers and whether it is 76 or 77, in this parliament would still be tight,” Ms Sharkie said. Australians are now waiting to see what Albanese and his team will do to get Australian back on track. With a large Australian debt, an ever increasing cost of living, and an interest rate looking to rise significantly over the next 12 months, Labor will have plenty of challenges on their hands as they begin their time in government.

Find Geelong Column by Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan

The Geelong Gallery has long been a gem in our region’s crown. Featuring iconic exhibitions that attract thousands of visitors to our region each year, the gallery continues to bolster Greater Geelong’s arts and culture credentials and our local economy. Last year’s RONE exhibition, which was supported by the City of Greater Geelong through Geelong Major Events, was a standout. The large-scale installations from the Geelong-born and internationally renowned street artist garnered almost 47,000 visitors, injecting $7.8 million to the economy. In 2021-2022, 47,300 people visited Archie 100, with 63 per cent from outside the region. After another tough year of COVID, this exhibition contributed $7.72 million to our economy. While clearly the gallery is knocking the ball out of the park, it is severely constrained by space restrictions. As a board member, I find it a great shame that the gallery can currently display only two per cent of its nationally significant collection. The City of Greater Geelong has partnered with Geelong Gallery in seeking support to proceed to detailed design and advanced planning for a significant expansion of the gallery into City Hall and the adjoining conference centre. This year’s opening of the Wurriki Nyal precinct means City Hall will be reserved for civic and ceremonial events and the remaining space could be shared with the gallery. This presents an exciting opportunity to be able to deliver more major national and international touring exhibitions, as well as display its magnificent existing collection. The expansion is among council’s key priority projects and the business case details a robust and convincing argument for the expansion. Council has been advocating to the federal and state governments to support this iconic redevelopment in our UNESCO City of Design because of the significant benefits for the creative community, tourism growth and hospitality businesses. The Geelong Gallery is a major cultural institution, and its expansion would provide a drawcard visitor experience and generate economic uplift during the 2026 Commonwealth Games and beyond. Super guarantee changes to take affect 1st July 2022 By Warren Strybosch

Employers are reminded that from 1 July 2022, that all employees can be eligible for super guarantee (SG), regardless of how much they earn. The $450 per month eligibility threshold related to SG has been removed and so every dollar earned will now attract SG. However, employers need only to pay super for workers under 18 when they work more than 30 hours in a week. The ATO also reminded employers that the SG rate will also increase from 10% to 10.5% on 1 July 2022. As a result, employers will need to use the new rate to calculate super on payments made to employees on or after 1 July, even if some or all of the pay period is for work done before 1 July.

Did you know that reduced tax rates may be available to eligible entities? These include companies, corporate unit trusts and public trading trusts. If your company is a ‘base rate entity’, your company tax rate is 25% from the 2021–22 income year onwards.

Company Tax Rates are changing but not everyone is eligible. By Warren Strybosch

For your company to be a ‘base rate entity’, it needs to meet the following eligibility criteria: •

Your aggregated turnover for the income year is less than the aggregated turnover threshold (which is $50 million from the 2018–19 income year onwards, or $25 million for the 2017–18 income year).

If your company earns passive income, it cannot exceed 80% of the company’s assessable income in that income year. Passive income can include: corporate distributions and their franking credits; royalties and rent; most income from interest; gains on qualifying securities; and a net capital gain.

The full company tax rate of 30% applies to all companies that are not eligible for this lower company tax rate. The rates are different for previous years and different rules apply. Go to www.ato.gov.au/rates/changesto-company-tax-rates/ to learn more.

Single Touch Payroll (STP) – Phase 2 ATO wants you to start reporting Directors Fees

www.findgeelong.com.au

Some common examples of amounts you might pay to a closely held payee include:

Type of amount

STP reporting required

Salary or wages

Yes – in scope for STP

Directors’ fees

Yes – in scope for STP

Single touch payroll (STP) reporting has been expanded. This expansion is known as STP phase 2.

Distributions to a beneficiary of a trust

No – not in scope for STP

If you a director paying yourself directors fees then you need to be aware of the new reporting requirements which started at 1st July 2021.

Dividends paid to a shareholder

No – not in scope for STP

Amounts that are a loan from the business

No – not in scope for STP

By Warren Strybosch

“Some digital service providers needed more time to update their products and have applied for deferrals, which cover their customers. This means that when you can start Phase 2 reporting depends on when your payroll product is ready,” the ATO said. “If you haven’t already started Phase 2 reporting, make sure you ask your provider when their product will be ready if you don’t already know.” As an employer, the ATO said it was important that employers are across the changes required, and businesses are getting ready to start phase 2 reporting. “This includes checking if you need to make changes to payroll pay codes/ categories so they align with Phase 2 requirements and reviewing allowances you pay and how they need to be reported in Phase 2,” the ATO said. “Businesses need to understand changes to salary sacrifice reporting and understand how to assign an income type to each payment.” The ATO said amounts paid to closely held payees should now be reported through STP. There are concessional reporting options for closely held payees reporting that include reporting actual payments on or before the date of payment (along with your arm’s length employees).

You need to keep accurate business records that demonstrate the type of amounts you pay to your closely held payees. This will help you to determine whether you have paid amounts that you need to report in STP.

If you only pay amounts that do not need to be reported in STP (such as trust distributions or loans to directors), then your business records should also demonstrate this.

Example Company A’s directors are closely held payees. The directors draw money from the business throughout the year. When a director draws money, it is promptly recorded as a loan to that director. At the end of each month, the balance of the loan is reduced to zero by payment of a directors’ fee to the director. The transactions that are promptly recorded as a loan do not need to be reported through STP, as they are amounts that are not in scope for STP and Company A has business records which demonstrate that. Company A has STP reporting obligations when they pay the directors’ fee at the end of each month, as directors’ fees are an amount that is within the scope of STP. They need to choose one of the three methods for reporting these amounts through STP.

“We have resources to help you understand the changes,” the ATO said. “You can also seek the advice of your tax or BAS professional or payroll provider.” See also:

Stolen generations payments in Vic: ATO factsheet By Warren Strybosch

The ATO has published a fact sheet on the tax treatment of lump sums paid by the Victorian Government under the Stolen Generations Reparations Package and Stolen Generations Funeral Fund. The ATO says such payments by the Victorian Government to a Stolen Generations member are not taxable. Accordingly, these payments do not need to be shown in the tax return for a Stolen Generations member because they are not taxable.

Another bumper winter crop: Rabobank Liv Casben (Australian Associated Press)

Australia looks to be headed for another bumper winter crop planting, with lifts in wheat and canola. Rabobank’s winter crop outlook for 2022/23 is forecasting a record 23.83 million hectares of crop will be planted this year, up one per cent on the previous 12 months and 11 per cent above the five-year average. Report co-author, agricultural analyst Dennis Voznesenski said while the forecast is for another bumper harvest, it was too early to confirm whether the record planting would deliver a similar level of production. “Until the crop is more progressed and we can see if there are any surprises in store, we have been conservative in our production volume estimates,” he said. “In particular, we’re mindful of the slow planting progress in NSW and the corresponding decline in yield potential with late planting, as well as overly wet growing conditions.” The outlook shows a 1.4 per cent bump in wheat as well as a record canola planting, up 20.9 per cent on last year, while there has been a reduction in barley, oats and pulses.

The specialist agribusiness bank said the forecast record planting comes as global markets look to Australia for supplies, amid warnings from the United Nations that the world is on the brink of a food crisis. This year has seen global shortages due to poor production and export constraints in a number of countries. Mr Voznesenski said a large winter crop would allow Australian farmers to secure good margins in the face of high costs for fertiliser, fuel, freight and agrochemicals. On a state-by-state basis, the report forecast winter plantings will be up in Victoria by 10 per cent on last year, and by eight per cent in Queensland. “Amazing conditions and prices in Victoria have seen a push by farmers to expand their operations into non-traditional cropping areas,” Mr Voznesenski told AAP. New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia are expected to see small contractions in planted area – of two per cent, one per cent and one per cent respectively. “In NSW that can be attributed to delays in planting because of the rain,” Mr Voznesenski said.

The report found farm input costs are expected to have peaked, but will likely remain elevated due to the high cost of production and freight, as well as sanctions on Russia and Belarus. Mr Voznesenski said after peaking in midMarch, a decline in global urea prices was expected to flow into local Australian markets in late July or early August. Prices will remain volatile, although there are signs they are already starting to ease. Report co-author Cheryl Kalisch Gordon said a prospective third consecutive bumper harvest would mean Australia would be “well placed to help support global wheat needs in 2022/23”. “We expect Australia could export around 26 million tonnes of wheat again in 2022/23, almost 50 per cent above the 10-year average and more than 50 per cent above the five-year average,” she said. The senior commodities analyst said increased canola planting was at the expense of barley and other pulses. Dr Kalisch Gordon said Australian farmers have planted less barley because of Chinese anti-dumping tariffs that remain in place as well as lower prices earlier this year.

Deeming rates to be frozen for two years By Warren Strybosch

Labor and the Coalition have announced that they will freeze the social security deeming rates for the next two years. The Prime Minister said about 450,000 Age Pensioners and 440,000 other social security recipients would benefit from this measure. The lower deeming rate will be frozen at 0.25% for financial investments up to $53,600 for single pensioners and $89,000 for pensioner couples. The upper deeming rate will remain at 2.25% on investment assets over the amount of $53,600 (or $89,000 for couples). The Opposition Leader said Labor would also freeze the deeming rates for two years.

ATO Debts – The ATO will start chasing up debts owing By Warren Strybosch

From May 2022, the ATO has advised that clients of tax-agents may receive a letter to their postal address reminding them of their “aged debt” (ie one the ATO has placed on hold and has not undertaken any recent action to collect). If the debt is not paid the ATO will, from June 2022, recommence offsetting clients’ tax refunds or credits to pay off their debts on hold - or it may use money from other government agencies e.g., Centrelink, the client would have otherwise received to reduce the debt owing.

Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics & BusinessCorrespondents (Australian Associated Press)

Growth in Australia’s manufacturing sector in the early months of 2022 came to an abrupt halt in May, due to supply constraints, labour shortages, rising prices and wage growth. The Australian Industry Group performance of manufacturing index fell by 6.1 points to 52.4 points, just above to 50-point mark that separates expansion from contraction. The decline in May followed three months of consistent acceleration. “There are mixed messages about the immediate outlook with new orders continuing to rise, but with many manufacturers expressing concern about the prospects of sharp energy price rises in the months ahead,” Ai Group chief executive Innes Willox said on Wednesday. “Manufacturers continue to report supply constraints and labour shortages as the leading sources of concern and they reported still higher input costs and a lift in wages growth in May.” Economic growth numbers for the March quarter due later on Wednesday are expected to show the broader Australian economy suffered a marked slowdown, after a robust finish in 2021. The impact of the COVID-19 Omicron variant and the flood disaster along the east coast of Australia are expected to have dampened activity in the first three months of 2022.

Growth in Manufacturing Slows in May Economists expect the economy grew by around 0.7 per cent in the quarter, a slight improvement on what the market was predicting last week. However, this would still leave the economy growing well short of the 3.4 per cent expansion seen in the December quarter when there was a rebound after the Delta variant lockdowns ended. If economists are correct, the annual growth rate likely slowed to around three per cent compared with 4.2 per cent as of December. “The year began with that absolute debacle over rapid testing, which led to all those supply chain issues and grocery shortages,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers told Sky News. “But the economy more broadly has been softer than we would like and even since those national accounts, inflation has spiked, real wages have gone backwards further. There is no shortage of economic challenges.”

Economists upgraded their growth forecasts after data on Tuesday showed company profits, business inventories and government demand was stronger than expected in the quarter, on top of solid household spending reported earlier in the month. As expected, net exports will detract from the growth calculation after strong imports during the quarter. Data last week also showed disappointing results for construction and business investment. Economists doubt a more modest expansion in the first three months of 2022 will stand in the way of the Reserve Bank of Australia raising the cash rate by a further 25 basis points when its’ board meets next week. Barclays economists expect the cash rate to steadily rise to 1.75 per cent by the end of this year, compared with 0.35 per cent now, with a further hike to two per cent in the early stages of 2023. Mr Walker engaged in illegal phoenix activities, whereby he transferred the assets of indebted companies to other companies for no consideration, namely Tazzy Tyres Accessories and Tazzy Tyres. He also failed to maintain proper financial records for all four companies. ASIC disqualified Mr Robert John Walker of Rosetta, Tasmania, from managing companies for five years and as a result of breaching his director’s duties for his involvement in four failed companies, has been disqualified from managing corporations for five years after engaging in illegal phoenix activity. “At the time of ASIC’s decision, the four companies owed unsecured creditors $1,944,418 including $855,121 owed to the ATO,” ASIC said. “In disqualifying Mr Walker, ASIC relied on supplementary reports lodged by the liquidator of the four companies, Barry Hamilton of Barry Hamilton and Associates.” Mr Walker is disqualified from managing corporations until 2 May 2027. Call to Protect Aussies from Crypto Scams Marion Rae (Australian Associated Press)

Consumer advocates are urging the incoming Labor government to rein in the unregulated cryptocurrency industry as a reform priority. “Choice is hearing from many Australians about financial loss and other harm caused by purchasing crypto assets that were not what they appeared to be,” the consumer group’s spokesman Patrick Veyret said on Tuesday. “We’ve seen a number of recent collapses of exchanges where people have lost all of their savings with no ability to get their money back.” A national survey released by Choice shows more than one in nine Australians (12 per cent) have bought cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum in the past 12 months, setting them up for steep losses if they fled the market during the recent crash. Another 11 per cent of Australians are interested in purchasing digital currencies, the survey found. A majority of those surveyed agreed that cryptocurrency trading should have consumer protections similar to trading on the stock market. Aggressive marketing and promotion campaigns by the crypto industry, often

involving celebrities and influencers, are luring Australians into purchases.

abnormally high trading volumes in the millions of dollars.

Choice has also seen a surge in scams on crypto exchanges.

Manipulators encourage thousands of followers on social media or encrypted message apps to buy the coin, and then sell the overvalued cryptocurrency. The price falls and everyday investors lose out.

In 2021, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission received more than 10,000 reports of crypto scams from consumers with losses totalling about $129 million. Last December, Australian exchange MyCryptoWallet collapsed leaving more than 20,000 consumers out of pocket as $21 million evaporated. In January 2019, Australian exchange ACX.io suddenly collapsed and wiped out $10 million. In both these collapses, consumers have no recourse for compensation, Choice said. The Australian Securities and Investment Commission has limited powers to take action under current laws. Market manipulation of the pricing of digital currencies is also a concern. Research by the University of Technology, Sydney Business School found more than 350 “pump and dump” events on two exchanges over a seven-month period, with extreme price distortions and

Choice has made a submission to the new federal government calling for urgent reforms. “Australians expect the same level of consumer protection and regulatory oversight for crypto assets as they do with other financial products,” Mr Veyret said. CRYPTO REFORM WISHLIST 1. Exchanges that sell or are in control of cryptocurrencies need to be subject to strong legal obligations, including market integrity rules, reporting requirements, and a ban on market manipulation. 2. People should have strong consumer protections when purchasing crypto assets, including the prohibition of misleading and deceptive conduct and unfair contract terms. 3. A “no loopholes” regulatory regime should capture all crypto asset providers and digital assets, including currencies and non-fungible tokens (NFT).

ASIC Takes Online Influencer To Court By Warren Strybosch

In our April edition we wrote about the new laws surrounding influencers; notably, that ASIC has warned social media influencers that they may face substantial risks and penalties if they promote financial products and services online. Recently, ASIC has taken an influencer to court and they have been convicted of charges under s1041D of the Corporations Act, in relation to their online posts on HotCopper. In a statement issued by the corporate regulator, it confirmed that on 6 June 2022, Gabriel Govinda, known online as Fibonarchery, pleaded guilty to 23 charges of manipulation of listed stocks on the Australian Securities Exchange and 19 charges of illegal dissemination of information relating to the manipulation.

ASIC has previously warned about social media led ‘pump and dump’ campaigns. “ASIC continues to act against this form of market manipulation that threatens the integrity of markets. Posting on social media to coordinate ‘pump and dump’ activity in listed stocks is an offence under the Corporations Act,” the corporate regulator stressed. ASIC found that between September 2014 to July 2015, Mr Govinda used 13 different share trading accounts, held in the names of friends and relatives, to manipulate the share price of 20 different listed stocks. It also noted a concerning trend of social media posts being used to coordinate ‘pump and dump’ activity in listed stocks, which may amount to market manipulation in breach of the Corporations Act.

Mr Govinda faces a maximum penalty for each charge of 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to $765,000, or both. In March 2019, the maximum penalty for these offences was increased to 15 years. ASIC is serious about stopping influencers posting ‘general advice’ via social media in relation to financial products and services. Stating you are providing the advice under the guise of ‘general advice’ or that you are doing so as a ‘financial counsellor’ will also not suffice. If you do not hold the appropriate financial planning qualifications and/ or have an Australian Financial Services Licence, then you should not be providing this type of advice. Not only does this apply to influencers but also to mortgage brokers selling personal insurances and accountants providing superannuation advice. ASIC has provided enough warnings to all of these groups and now are pursuing them in court. JUNE 2022 | FIND GEELONG

Don’t Double Dip Your Deductions This Tax Time

ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding people not to make the mistake of double dipping their deductions in their tax return this year. Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh explained “Around 8.4 million Australians claimed nearly $19.8 billion in workrelated expenses in 2021. That’s a lot of deductions so we want to make sure you get it right the first time. It’s important you claim what you’re entitled to – no more, no less.” When people prepare their tax return, it’s important to remember the rules for claiming different types of workrelated expenses. What can be claimed depends on the type of job, individual circumstances, and whether there are the required records to support the claim. “While some people make genuine mistakes, we do see people trying to gain an unfair advantage by claiming incorrect or false expenses. A mistake that we often see in tax returns is people claiming expenses twice.” “You wouldn’t double dip your chip, so don’t double dip your deductions” Mr Loh said.

“Remember, we use sophisticated data analytics to monitor for incorrect information and you risk being audited or penalised for deliberately providing incorrect information.”

and actual cost methods. The method that gives people the best outcome can be used, as long as the eligibility and record-keeping requirements for their chosen method are observed.

Below are some ‘double dipping’ mistakes the ATO sees when people lodge their tax returns each year.

Taxpayers can use the home office expenses calculator to help them work out which method will give them the best outcome.

Working from home expenses and the shortcut method “One in three Aussies claimed working from home expenses in their tax return last year and we expect this trend to continue” Mr Loh said. A common mistake we see is people using the working from home shortcut method to claim their working from home expenses and then double dipping, claiming additional amounts in their return for expenses such as their mobile phone and internet bills, as well as the decline in value of equipment and furniture.

“While the traditional methods require receipts, paperwork and other record keeping, the shortcut method only requires a record of hours worked – diary entries or timesheets will suffice,” Mr Loh said. When claiming working from home expenses using the shortcut method, the amount needs to be included at the Other work-related expenses question in tax returns with ‘COVID-hourly rate’ in the description field.

When the working from home shortcut method is used to claim working from home expenses, it is all-inclusive.

If a method other than the shortcut method is used in later years and you want to claim depreciation for an expensive purchase such as a laptop, the correct records for that item must be kept.

There are three methods available to claim a deduction for working from home expenses depending on individual circumstances, the shortcut, fixed rate

after you’ve lodged, in case we have any questions. The easiest way to keep track of your records is with the ATO app” Mr Loh said. “Even if you choose to lodge your tax return with a registered tax agent, it is still your responsibility to make sure the agent has all the correct records” explains Mr Loh. Car expenses Nearly 3 million people claimed workrelated car expenses in 2021 and one of the most common mistakes was people using the cents per kilometre method to make their claim, and then double dipping by claiming expenses separately such as fuel, car insurance, and registration. The cents per kilometre rate is allinclusive and covers decline in value, registration, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fuel costs. These expenses can’t be added on top of the rate when calculating deductions.

The ATO will also be taking a closer look at claims calculated using the logbook method, to ensure they reflect people’s circumstances coming out of the pandemic. “You must choose your preferred method when calculating car expenses, the cents per kilometre or the logbook method. Just because there is a dip in the road, doesn’t mean you can double dip your car expenses” Mr Loh said.

Reimbursed expenses Finally, the ATO is making sure taxpayers aren’t claiming expenses where they have already been reimbursed by their employer. “If your boss has reimbursed your drycleaning costs for your uniform, but you then claim laundry deductions on your tax return, well you’re picking your neighbours’ pockets” Mr Loh said. Negotiating For Long Term Success BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins

In business as in life we spend a lot of our time negotiating to get what we want for the lowest possible cost. That cost comes in all forms, dollars, time, projects etc. The expression win / win is crucial to ongoing negotiations with all companies. If we tried to negotiate to win at all costs, in the long run we will not win ,as the company that you have pushed to the limit, won’t be available to us the next time you want to use them.

“The most difficult thing in any negotiation is making sure you strip it of the emotion and deal with the facts” Howard Baker. In an argument, as soon we start to get emotional, our logic changes and loses focus. A negotiation is a polite disagreement/ argument. Keep to the facts. All negotiations have a level of emotion in them. For businesses it is all about sales and profit which is our lifeblood. The emotion we need you use is our passion. Passion to succeed, to grow sales and maximise profits on the goods we are negotiating on. Never lose that passion. Make sure of our facts. To ensure to achieve a successful win /win, We need to to start by knowing exactly what our limits are. When we know the market price at retail, we can then work back based on the margins you need to achieve in your business. If a product sells for $100 and you need a 50% margin, or 100% mark up, then you cannot afford to pay more than $50 for that product. You would start at a lower cost to give yourself “wriggle room”. Work within your limits and do not compromise. To know if the cost is achievable, there must be a level of understanding of the costs involved to develop the resource. If the minimum cost is $60 they are able to sell it for, we have four options 1. 2. 3. 4.

Find an alternative product to suit your customers needs, Find an alternative resource at a better price, Re-evaluate the retail, is a higher retail price possible in the current climate. How can you soften the blow for the consumer by marketing it differently

If all 4 options fail, walk away. Re-assess our goals and the market.

To have some understanding of the supply costs, start by checking the component costs where applicable. Have component prices gone up, have wages risen, have logistic cost increased?? In the scenario above, going from $50 to $60 in price is a 20% increase at cost, but only $10. So many variants need to be considered. When buying a Car just getting the car from A to B the additional cost of transport alone is considerable. If only the one car is bought down to the seller, the cost will be much higher than if there are 4-5 cars on a carrier. It is spread over the cost of all the cars? When buying small items the same logistic cost is applied over thousands of items. Therefore less impact on each piece. We can readily find the cost increases on many of the components such as cotton, wool, steel, iron copper etc When prices have escalated as they have right now, an increase is expected. The negotiation is how far can we accept the increase. Is the supplier putting the price up higher than it needs to? The supplier needs to put their prices up to pay their costs also.

If the price increase is legitimate but there is a concern the general public will not accept a 20% increase on the particular item, and sales will be lost, what alternatives are there? Can we negotiate for a value-added package? Are there additional support items that can make the purchase more appealing? Can we take some of the features or quantity out? Is there a service aspect we can add? There are so many ways to keep the price down. Never be afraid to negotiate when you have all your facts. Negotiations is just one of the areas of support DEB can offer Contact DEB for a complimentary discovery session to determine how we can assist you to thrive. https://calendly.com/debfribbins/discovery-session

Planning can be as micro-detailed as organising what flavour of sausages to order for the Christmas barbecue or as ‘big picture’ as who you want your business to merge with in ten years’ time.

5 LEADERS RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe

When you hear the word ‘leader’, what person comes into your mind? Perhaps a brave statesman like Nelson Mandela. It could be an influential person from the past such as Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln. It might even be the new Prime Minister – or the old one, depending on your electoral preference! How about leaders who you know personally – your kids’ sports coach, a teacher who inspired you, your mum, your boss? How about yourself? Are you the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word leader? What kind of a leader are you? Do you even think of yourself as a leader? We are all called to be leaders at some time in our lives. Even as a parent, you are a leader to your children. In your job, you are a leader of work culture.

What sort of planner are you? Recognise your style and bring alongside you others who plan in different ways. Collaborate with them and introduce into your planning group those you intend to delegate to. That way, you all buy into the same vision.

LEADERSHIP TRAITS THAT GET RESULTS behaviour, you can’t believe a word they say, can you? ... and it’s safe to assume, you don’t trust them. When you’re in a leadership role, you have to check in with what you are doing. Does it reflect what you say? Do you talk about harmony in the workplace but have a hissy fit every time a deadline is missed? Do you insist on punctuality but turn up five minutes late on occasion? ...People are watching you – scary but true! People might listen to what you say, but they will remember what you do. 2. Listen before talking As a leader, it’s tempting to tell your people how things are done. But logically, if you need to tell others how things are done, it means they’re not being done! So, why not find out why?

Leadership means making choices – often difficult at first but easier and more and more beneficial over time. Here are five traits that all leaders demonstrate, traits that guarantee great results.

Leaders who listen learn more and develop better strategies and tactics for the next move onwards. Listening to others also engenders trust with others. And when you think about it, we have two ears but only one tongue – maybe there’s a reason for that!

1. Showing, not telling

3. Planning

We’ve all heard the sayings ‘actions speak louder than words’, and ‘don’t do what I say, do what I do’. If you know someone whose words, instructions or commands don’t match up with their

You may be a ‘go with the flow’ type of person. Being calm is great but letting things pass you by in the hope that it will all turn out right in the end is seriously unproductive!

4. Forgiving and taking responsibility Forgiveness is not often spoken about, but it is a vital trait for a leader to cultivate. Things are just a whole lot better if you can forgive others immediately. We’re all humans and therefore slip-ups will be made. Forgiving doesn’t mean that due process shouldn’t be followed. If, say, OH&S requirements are not followed or production schedules not adhered to, there are serious consequences. However, taking responsibility for one’s actions or mistakes, especially if you are the leader, is not a sign of weakness but is liberating for all. 5. Showing you value others Let’s be honest, work can be boring. Your kids’ attitudes can wear you down. There are days, aren’t there, where you just want to scream, ‘Stop, world, and let me off!’ A little appreciation will go a long way. Why not show the people you lead that you value them? It could be something as simple as a certificate with ‘Best Worker of the Week’ printed on it. Many businesses celebrate people’s birthdays with a cake at morning tea. The Christmas party could be a time where appreciation is shown in the form of a small gift. If you cultivate these five traits, you can become an awesome leader!

Trending Indoor Colours For Winter creativity’, according to Pantone. The shade falls under the blue colour family but with violet-red undertones, making it appear as a soft purple, mauve or lilac, depending on how you view it.

PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof

Colours are more than just the latest trend. We are strongly affected by the colours around us. They reflect our values and what atmosphere we wish to evoke in our homes. Not surprisingly, after the shock of lockdowns and a worldwide pandemic (who saw that coming?), the colour trend for 2022 is for soothing tones, ones that generate calm and comfort, or for colours that engender optimism and hope. If you are thinking of renovating your home or giving your interior a refresh, here is what the painting experts are predicting as the up-to-date colours for 2022. Go for Green

A soft calming shade, this would be great as a feature wall in a bedroom or as a secondary shade highlighting off-whites, stone and pale earthy tones. Be bright with Blue

such as champagne gold, brass and matte black accessories to create a chic and welcoming space. Another shade of green that is popular is one with sage tones called October Mist. This was chosen by its manufacturer as the Benjamin Moore Colour of the Year. Benjamin Moore’s press release states that ‘this gently shaded sage quietly anchors a space, while encouraging individual expression through colour’. Sage tones create a more intimate feel. It is a great shade to use as a backdrop and – fortunately for those who don’t want to paint the interior of their homes too often – it won’t go out of fashion. It highlights furniture and other accessories in earthy or red colours. Punctuate in Purple

Dulux has also chosen a blue shade as their Colour of the Year 2022. A cool blue paint colour called Bright Skies is described by Dulux as ‘an airy, light blue’. The colour was chosen as it ‘perfectly captures the optimism and desire for a fresh start that is the mood of the moment’. It blends well with wooden furniture and stoneware and its subtle tonings brighten considerably when sunlight falls across it.

Green equals calm, natural, growth and gentleness. It’s a great colour for a study, quiet nook, a formal dining area – in fact, just about any area of the home. Greens can be bright, light colours that go well with pastels, or darker for a more formal environment.

Helen van Gent, head of Dulux’s parent company says, ‘This year, vibrant colours and light tones are re-emerging – a reflection, perhaps, of our need for positivity and a fresh approach.’

‘Specifically, there’s been rising interest in greens. The green colour family is so diverse, from calming rich sages like Evergreen Fog to earthier tones and more dramatic emeralds,’ says Forbes Home.

For more painting advice on painting in winter, contact Dahllof Painting Services at sjd67@bigpond.net.au. We will be happy to answer all your inquiries.

Evergreen Fog is Sherwin William’s colour of the year for 2022. A calming, mid-tone green paint colour with a touch of blue, it is a neutral shade bordering on grey. Evergreen Fog blends with just about every colour on the spectrum and can be combined in exciting ways with metallics

We couldn’t agree more.

The Pantone Color Institute™ provides customised colour standards and forecasts colour trends forecasting, including the ‘Pantone Color of the Year’. ( a ) The period of 3 years from the date on which the cause of action is discoverable by the person making the claim; or ( b ) The period of 12 years from the date of the act or omission alleged to have resulted in the death or personal injury with which the action is concerned.

Time Limitations For Taking Legal Action

LAWYERS By John Van Beveren

If you believe you have a legal claim against someone and wanting to take action, then it is crucial that you do it in time! The law imposes strict time limits for when you can commence legal action. These time limits are known as ‘Statute of Limitation.’ This means if put in a claim after the limitation period has expired, it will be extremely difficult to commence legal proceedings, or even impossible to proceed with your legal claim. This is regardless of your case and if it has merit and there is a clear breach of law! Why do limitation periods apply? The main justification for the law imposing limitation periods for certain claims is because the longer it takes for an action to be heard before a Court, then the less efficient the administration of justice becomes. Limitation periods also exist because if the cause of action that led to you initiating proceedings occurred ages ago, then the other side to that action may have misplaced the evidence they need to defend themselves. Witnesses relevant to the action may also not be available. Everyone has the right to a fair trial, and a fair trial cannot be guaranteed when too much time has passed. Therefore, Limitation periods encourage parties to pursue their potential claims diligently and in a timely manner.

19

Family Law Family Law is an important area in which you should seek immediate legal assistance with because there are several different time limitations that exist. These time limitations include, but are not limited to, a period of 12 months must have passed since you separated from you partner before you are eligible to apply for a divorce. When your divorce is granted, then you have 12 months to take action for the assets and property from that relationship asset pool. What are the limitation periods? The limitation periods do vary depending on the type of claim and the area of law relevant to your matter. The limitation periods that exist in Australia are extensive and constantly evolving, it is therefore crucial that you seek legal advice as soon as possible to ensure that you have not run out of time to make your claim. In Victoria, some of the limitation periods that apply are listed in the Limitation of Actions Act 1958 but this is not exhaustive. Some of the most important time limits you should be aware of include:

Employment Law If you believe you have been underpaid by your employer, the Fair Work Commission states you have a period of six years from when the alleged underpayment occurred to make a claim against your employer to recover those payments. How can I make a claim? If you have a cause of action that you have not yet to act upon and are wondering whether you will still be able to make a claim, come in and see us at Van Beveren Lawyers for assistance.

Contracts and Torts A cause of action in Contract or Tort Law cannot not be brought after the expiration of six years from the date when the cause of action accrued. Actions founded in Contract or Tort Law include, but are not limited to, breach of contract, breach of statutory duty, negligence, and defamation.

It is crucial to ensure that you are not out of time before commencing legal proceedings to avoid any unwanted costs or consequences. If you decide to commence legal proceedings when the limitation period has expired, you risk being personally liable for any costs incurred if you are unsuccessful– these may include any legal costs incurred by the party you commenced proceedings against - and this could be an expensive mistake!

Recovery of Land or Rent An action to recover land cannot be brought by any person after the expiration of fifteen years from the date when the right of action accrued and no action can be made to recover arrears of rent or damages in respect thereof after the expiration of six years from the date when the arrears became due.

Van Beveren Lawyers is a Geelong-based boutique law firm with a compassionate approach towards our clients. The team at Van Beveren Lawyers have an array of specialised legal knowledge and will be able to assist you with any questions regarding limitation periods and advise on the prospects of success for your claim.

SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls

Make no mistake, salary packaging reduces your taxable income. By accessing your pre-tax pay, you can use some it to pay for your life’s expenses and reduce the tax payable on your remaining pay. The gross value of the amount you salary package each year is included on your end of financial year income statement as ‘Reportable Fringe Benefits Amount’ (RFBA). The RFBA is used when the Government determine some benefits that are available to you as well as how much you need to repay for your HECS/HELP debt. So, the sum of your remaining gross salary and the RFBA will determine how much your HECS/ HELP repayments are at the end of the financial year. It’s important to know this at the start of each financial year, as nobody wants the ATO to come knocking for extra tax. Will I have to make HECS/HELP debt repayments? When you do your tax return, the ATO will calculate what they refer to as your ‘Repayment Income’ (RI) amount. This is the combined amount of your Taxable Income, RFBA, Reportable Superannuation contributions and any exempt foreign employment income. The RI is then used against a threshold table to calculate how much your minimum HECS/HELP needs to be. The tables for the compulsory repayment threshold changes every year. The first RI level is as follows: For the 2021-22 income year, it is $47,014. For the 2022-23 income year, it will be $48,361.

Salary Packaging and Your HECS/HELP Debt You do not and should not be paying tax on these repayments. Is it worthwhile salary packaging if I have a HECS/HELP debt? Salary packaging is always worthwhile. Even if a salary packaging arrangement tips you into the RI threshold, or puts you into a higher repayment bracket, you won’t suddenly be forking out massive repayments. The ATO understands that people who are just starting out already have to combat high living costs on a low range salary, so compulsory HECS/ HELP repayment percentages are set at fair increments. The current repayment percentage rate for the lowest income threshold - $47,014 - $54,282 - is just 1%. If you have a salary packaging arrangement, you will always be saving on tax with or without a HECS/HELP debt. While calculations vary depending on your income and existing HECS/HELP debt, even at the low end of the income scale, you can expect to save thousands off your annual tax bill through salary packaging.

Report your pay rise A pay rise is always welcome, but some people get caught out on their HECS/ HELP repayments at tax time, especially if they’ve received a pay rise late in the financial year. Even if you’ve been below the compulsory HECS/HELP repayment threshold for most of the year, a small pay rise could tip you into a new or different repayment threshold. If your pay rise does put you into a higher repayment bracket and it isn’t adjusted in line with your gross income, you may have to repay the outstanding amount for that financial year. If in doubt, get your payroll person, accountant or salary packaging provider to recalculate these figures. Remember, you can always volunteer extra repayments to pay off your HECS/ HELP debt sooner. Unlike personal or car loans, these loans do not currently attract interest. They are only adjusted and marginally increased on a yearly basis in line with the consumer pricing index and current inflation rate. Extra voluntary repayments can make a big difference.

If your RI is above these amounts, you will pay minimum of 1% of your RI as a HECS/ HELP repayment. It is a common misconception that if you earn under this threshold and are benefiting from salary packaging, you won’t need to make HECS/HELP repayments. In fact, your adjusted repayment income amount may tip you into the compulsory repayment threshold. To check if you are impacted, you can ask your accountant or salary packaging provider. They can help you calculate whether or not you should be having more tax deducted from your current salary, and exactly how much more you should be contributing to avoid bill shock at tax time. HECS/HELP repayments, voluntary or compulsory, always come out of your pre-tax salary.

Example based on health services employee with an existing HECS/HELP debt. Calculations are indicative only.

Once your HECS/HELP is paid off, you can probably expect a much juicier return at tax time. Can you salary package your HECS/ HELP debt? You can use your pre-tax salary to make voluntary repayments to your HECS/HELP debt, but you need to be aware that any voluntary repayments are in addition to any compulsory repayments based on your RI. The result of this is that you will pay off your HECS/HELP debt quicker. Make more with The Salary Packaging People

Commonwealth Seniors Health Card: increase in income threshold By Warren Strybosch

Both Labor and the Coalition have announced that they will increase the income test threshold for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) from 1 July 2022. The Prime Minister said the CSHC income test threshold for singles will be increased from $57,761 to around $90,000 (and from $92,416 to $144,000 for couples). An Introduction To Our 3rd Generation Family Business EMBROIDERY SPECIALIST By Kerry Kaspi

Back in 1985 my parents, Adrian & Jan Summers, holidayed in sunny Queensland when they spotted an embroidery machine for sale. Always being in business they had an eye for new opportunities and this time was no exception. They ended up coming home with the single head embroidery machine. Setting up a store in the newly opened Market Square with the single header, it was the first to be seen in the region. People would stand at the window to watch it sew out various designs and names all day long. They just loved watching this machine works its magic all the way to the finished product. Fast forward 10 years and we have large quantities of work from some of Australia’s largest workwear companies such as Can’t Tear‘em and Hard Yakka. From the one single-head machine we worked our way up to five eight-head machines with 22 staff and worked like this for another 15 years. During this time I acquired the business from my parents. The machines back then were nowhere near as advanced as today, over the years we had to move with the ever-

expanding technology available in this business and as the large workwear companies moved overseas to a more cost-efficient country to operate in, we lost 85% of our income and had to scale down immensely leaving us to struggle to keep busy.

But one of the things I’ve been most proud of is accepting all the challenges that has been thrown at us, never giving up, knowing who and what we have become and being strong in the belief that we can get through any challenging times.

After working hard on improving our marketing and hiring reps to go out on the road to bring in business from all over we slowly began to build the company to what it is today. By showing customers how important experience is in this business we were able to bring in new customers from various walks of life who could see our expertise in operating for so long, they loved their final product and we built our business again, from this stand point.

But in the end nothing would make me prouder than to continue this business to the 4th or 5th generation.

In the last 10 years both my children have started working here with my youngest, Julian, expressing great interest in learning the ropes. During this short time, he has added great value to the business showing what fresh eyes can do to change things for the better. Now we are on a steady path to growing bigger and expanding our team constantly. The road in business has been both challenging and exciting, I’ve been surprised by people and proud of people.

“From small startup clothing brands to companies as big as Cotton On and Yakka we’ve worked with them all and helped add value to products for over 35 years.”

Vitamin D for a strong immune system

Marion Rae (Australian Associated Press)

NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger

The most important role of vitamin D is putting calcium into our bones. But it also has other roles such as regulating our immune systems. Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of both the innate immune system (general defence) and the acquired immune system (specific targeted defence), as well as having a role in regulating inflammation. Studies have shown that higher levels of vitamin D are associated with reduced disease, including respiratory infections. A blood test for Vitamin D gives a reference range of 50-250 nmol/L, with the lower end of this range set in order to prevent osteoporosis (spontaneous spinal fractures). Whilst vitamin D levels above 50nmol/L does prevent osteoporosis, optimal health is found in levels between 100-150nmol/L. Our bodies make vitamin D with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight and it was around 100 years ago after the industrial revolution, when rickets (a disease of bone malformation) was found in many children of Northern Europe. These children spent most of the daylight hours inside working, but now it is estimated that almost 50% of the world’s population are deficient in vitamin D. Daily exposure of arms and hands (or

equivalent skin elsewhere) near midday is considered to produce adequate vitamin D, and emerging research shows that other health benefits come from exposure to sunlight. Being further from the equator, or having darker skin increases the amount of sunlight required to make enough vitamin D, and in Melbourne, little UV light is available in winter. Ideally, your body would make enough vitamin D from the sunlight in the summer, to get you through the following winter.

Recent research has shown vitamin D3 in the calcifediol form is more effective again as it is in a form that is easily absorbed. This is particularly true in cases of deficiency, liver damage, kidney disease, and intestinal malabsorption, as these organs are all involved in absorption, metabolism and activation of vitamin D.

Oily fish such as salmon, herring, and mackerel are the best food sources of vitamin D, and traditionally, these fish were regularly consumed by those living at northern latitudes. Cod liver oil is high in vitamin D, but it is also high in vitamin A which is toxic in high doses. Take care not to exceed the recommended amount especially if you are taking multiple supplements that contain vitamin A.

naturopath can also make a custom

If your vitamin D levels are low, supplementing through the winter can help to keep you well. But not all vitamin D supplements are the same. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) supplements of plant origin were the first to be available, but this type of vitamin D is not easily absorbed. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a form that is absorbed much more easily and if you are taking it regularly, look for a supplement that contains a low dose of vitamin K, as this will assist with absorption.

Whole Naturopathy has vitamin D3 in the calcifediol form in stock. A mix of herbs, recommend nutritional products, or homeopathy best suited to your unique symptoms.

This advice is general in nature and not intended to be prescriptive. For individualised prescriptive advice, please see a naturopath or other health care practitioner.

Personal Insurances: What is it and are you wasting your money on it? FINANCIAL PLANNING By Warren Strybosch

Last year I met with a couple who were in the early fifties. They wanted to review their financial situation to make sure they were on the right track leading into retirement. As part of their pre-retirement planning, we had to review their personal insurances. Whilst this was not an area, they had considered needing reviewing, it is an important part of their planning to get right. Why? Simply put, insurances cost money. It is either being paid for out of cash flow or it is being paid for from superannuation. At the end of the day, your personal insurances premiums will have an impact on how much you will have in retirement. On the flip side, if you don’t have enough insurances in place and you suffer an illness and/or injury, you might have to sell some of your assets to help cover future costs or the loss of income because of sustaining a said injury or illness. The loss of assets prior to retirement can have a devasting impact on one’s future retirement aspirations. My analysis of the couple’s situation was that, whilst they had enough assets e.g., two investment properties and plenty of superannuation, they still should consider holding on to their Income Protection at the very least. They had discussed cancelling all of their insurances as they did not feel the need to hold on to it anymore; after all, they had two investment properties. During my review, I referred the clients on to a mortgage broker to refinance their investment loans. Whilst they were refinancing their loans, even the mortgage broker encouraged them to hold on to their income protection and life insurance until they either had paid off their loans or had reach retirement age. The outcome, the couple believed they could self-insure and made the decision to cancel all their insurances. Selfinsure, as it states, is where you decide to use your own assets or have a plan in place to cover any future insurable costs without the need to rely on any insurance – basically, they were going alone on this.

Unfortunately, for the couple, strategy struck. Two years later, the wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The couple had to sell both investment properties to help cover medical bills and the associated costs of trying to battle the horrible disease. They ended up losing all their assets they had built up during their working life. It was horrible to watch her struggle with the cancer and it was made worse that they were now worried about their future livelihoods. A few years back, a different client, that I had inherited from another financial advisor, rang me up and wanted to cancel all his insurance cover immediately. The male client, in his sixties, was very irate and accused me of not helping him last year when he had suffered a mild heart attack. Given the insurer told him recently he was not entitled to a payout, he told me what he thought of me and what I could do with the insurances. I acknowledged he was upset, apologized for my lack of service that I provided to him last year (even though I could not recall speaking to him) and proceeded to ask him a few questions. I learned he had undergone surgery and had a stent put in one of his arteries. Whilst I was talking to him I looked up his policy and discovered he had income protection in place and trauma plus cover.

I asked the client if I could enquire with the insurer on his behalf because I felt that he might be able to put a claim in. The client was incredulous that I believe he might be entitled to something. He was angry and reiterate the claim had already been denied. I explained that I felt he might be entitled to a part payment and that his income protection might also come into play. He admitted he had not enquired about the income protection but was very dubious about the part trauma payment. Even though he was not impressed with me he allowed me to make some enquires on his behalf. We agreed I would call him back as soon as I heard something. I rang the insurer and enquired about his heart attack and whether a full claim was payable. The insurer had his information on file and as they had explained to the client, he was not entitled to a trauma payment. I then proceeded to ask about a partial payment because of the ‘trauma plus’ part of the policy. Ironically, the insurer did not pick up that he had ‘trauma plus’ and agreed that under ‘trauma plus’ the client might be entitled to a part claim. I then enquired about his Income Protection as well, and sure enough, the client had never made a claim under his Income Protection even though he had many months off work due to his heart attack.

www.findgeelong.com.au

I rung the client back up and explained what I had found and that not only did I believe he would be entitled to a partial payment, but I also felt he might be entitled to an Income Protection claim. The client was still annoyed and thought I might be making all of this up but was willing to go along with the process – he did not want to take the chance of missing out in case I might be right. To shorten this story, the end result was that the client was not entitled to one partial trauma payment but in fact two partial trauma payments as he had two stents put in at over a period of 12 months. Also, he was entitled to many months of Income Protection payments. The result was that he received well over $200,000 in payments. A year later, he had another heart attacked and received the full trauma payout resulting in another $250,000 in payments. To my surprise, after several conversations with him, the client admitted that he had never spoken to me in the past and had only dealt directly with the insurer. I was relieved because I make it my point to try and look after clients who are going

through a trauma event. I am now invited to pop in anytime to visit him and his family. I could bring up many more stories related to personal insurances. My intention here is to highlight the importance of having personal insurances or at least the right amount of cover in place. Also, having a financial advisor, who has had experience in this space can not only save you money but may be able to help you at claim time get what your entitled too. Over the proceeding months I will go through the four main personal insurances:

Potential end for Div 7A and sub-trust arrangementsa A draft determination has changed the ATO’s position on how sub-trust arrangements apply within the context of Div 7A. Effectively, when a corporate beneficiary and trustee of the trust are ultimately the same people, Div 7A will apply directly to unpaid present entitlements (UPEs). The assumed provision of financial accommodation in practice means that sub-trust arrangements will have no benefit when it comes to deferral of tax or repayments of loans. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT

NOT-FOR-PROFIT OF THE MONTH

The Dress up place is a not-for-profit registered charity. In 2008 a group of like-minded friends who had been involved in musical theatre in Geelong for many years and had many costumes between them which they were often asked to lend to people they knew through the amateur theatre industry decided to open a shop where they could supply costumes to the communities and schools of Geelong. We thought we would give it a try for 12 months. Over the years we have assisted numerous primary and secondary schools with their concerts and theatre studies, plays and musical productions. As well as many theatre groups and their plays and musicals. Groups such as: Kardinia International College, 3222, Geelong Repertory Theatre, Centrestage, Geelong Lyric, Footlight, Sacred Heart, Montpellier Primary, Mary McKillop College, Kings College, Christian College, Clonard College, Geelong High, Grovedale Primary, School Holiday Program, Just Go Theatre, Potato Shed Productions, Emmanuel College, and various nationality days. The business grew over time and eight years later in 2016 we moved to a larger premises in Grovedale. The business continued to grow and service many schools and community performing arts groups. Despite being fully staffed by volunteers the business only just covered overheads and that has been a constant challenge. Nothing prepared us for the biggest challenge of them all- Covid in 2020. It stopped all income, our overheads continued and depleted all savings. As we are staffed entirely by volunteers, we didn’t qualify for any financial covid business support.

Respect Mem Fox has written many great books. I came across these lovely words in one recently: ‘Whoever You Are’ Little one, whoever you are, wherever you are, there are little ones just like you all over the world. Their skin may be different from yours, and their homes may be different from yours. Their schools may be different from yours, and their lands may be different from yours. Their lives may be different from yours, and their words may be different from yours. But inside, their hearts are just like yours, whoever they are, wherever they are, all over the world. Their smiles are like yours, and they laugh just like you, their hurts are like yours, and they cry like you, too. Whoever they are, wherever they are, all over the world. Little one, when you are older and when you are grown, you may be different, and they may be different, Wherever you are, wherever they are, in this big, wide world. But remember this: Joys are the same, and love is the same. Pain is the same, and blood is the same. Smiles are the same, and hurts are just the same – Wherever they are, wherever you are, wherever we are, All over the world. Having an understanding and appreciation of people’s individual differences is an important aspect of respect. It’s said that knowledge helps love grow – knowing what someone else has experienced helps our understanding of that person and in turn leads to an appreciation and respect for them. Learning to respect others despite our differences is difficult. I’m often surprised once I make the effort to listen to someone who seems so different to me – how nice they are and what an interesting person they are. I realise at that moment how deserving they are of my respect. The relevance of the moral code: ‘Treat others as you want to be treated’, continues without question. I sense that when this timeless truth is practiced then respect is a natural consequence. Children learn by observing us adults – they follow the model we set. So, if we want our children to be more respectful, we need to ensure we’re setting the example. All the best everyone, Kind regards, Rob. LPS Chaplain. Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.au

GAWS FOSTER PROGRAM GAWS has more than 100 active foster carers offering their homes and time to provide animals with some extra TLC. Last year, more than 1200 animals were part of the GAWS foster program. An animal can enter foster care for many different reasons. They may need post-operative recuperation, respite from the shelter environment, mother and offspring, building confidence, weight gain/weight loss or for another medical reason. Each animal receives all of the time and care they need to prepare them for their forever home. WANT TO BE A CAT FOSTER CARER? You can help by becoming a cat foster carer. Foster carers are supported by the dedicated GAWS Foster Care Coordinator and provided with relevant training, veterinary care, pet food, bedding and equipment. GAWS needs a range of different foster carers with different lifestyles to meet different animals’ fostering needs. If you are interested in becoming a cat foster carer, it is preferred that there are no other animals in the home to provide a stress-free environment for a mother and/or her kittens a safe, non-threatening environment to recuperate, grow and thrive before hitting the milestone of heading into the GAWS cat adoption centre. For more information and to complete an application, visit the GAWS website: gaws.org.au WANT TO BE A CAT VOLUNTEER? There is wonderful team of dedicated volunteers at GAWS. If you would like to make a difference to the cats lives by volunteering and can commit to a regular weekly schedule for a period of at least six months, have a passion for animal welfare and are over the age of 18, or would like to arrange your student experience with GAWS, visit gaws.org.au and fill out a volunteer application form. LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

BOWLS

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

GOLF

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club. Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

RACQUET

FC LEOPOLD FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop. The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions. FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player. Like the page to keep up to date with the clubs progress as exciting things are happening with lights and a massive COGG funded pavilion project.

Expressions of Interest for Chilwell Library Public Art Commission We are seeking to commission a suitably qualified and experienced artist or creative team to develop a public artwork which will be considered a significant cultural asset for the redevelopment of Chilwell Library in Newtown.

Newtown and Chilwell are rich in residential and industrial history. From 1839, industries such as tanneries, wool scours and soap works were developed on Chilwell’s river frontages.

Submissions may be for a standalone 3D work/s; work/s integrated within the building, design and materials; or a combination of both.

The budget for the commission is up to $25,000 + GST. Overview The Chilwell Library redevelopment will increase the current space within the library facility adding internal and external public meeting places. A large deck area will be situated at the rear of the building, overlooking the existing adjacent parklands. The public artwork will be situated at an optimum location at the entrance to the building. Feedback from community has demonstrated enthusiasm for the public artwork to integrate with the library building development, as a subtle and sophisticated work. The Chilwell Library Public Art Commission aims to exemplify the vision for public art as expressed in the City of Greater Geelong’s Public Art Strategy and give consideration to the unique qualities of the site, place and culture of the region. The artwork/s would be thoughtfully integrated within the overall development, in a prominent location near the entrance to the library, bringing further expression and feeling to the redeveloped library facility. Context Artists are invited to consider the following context as a part of preparing their responses.

The Chilwell Library is located nearby the Barwon River. “Parwon”, the traditional name for this river, is the Wadawurrung word for Magpie.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are encouraged to submit proposals.

Site details The library site is located on Russell Street in Newtown, and is a feature of the Pakington Street precinct, a popular dining and retail area. The site proposed for the artwork/s faces north-west and is situated in the green space and on the featured brick wall in a prominent location at the entrance to the library, providing an engaging location for a contemporary public artwork. Connection to the adjacent parkland is a key principle for the building design and public art expression. Power and water will be available on site and artworks relying upon these amenities will be considered, with respect to the project budget and ongoing maintenance requirements.

June Factor - Soldiers and Aliens This forgotten history restores to public memory the experiences of men, many recent immigrants and refugees, who either willingly or reluctantly joined the Australian army during WWII. Join us during Refugee Week to acknowledge the story of Soldiers and Aliens: Men in the Australian Army’s Employment Companies during World War II Of these men was author June Factor’s father, Szulem Faktor, later known as Saul Factor. Despite fleeing Poland to begin a new life with his wife and young child in Australia, Szulem, a man of strong principles, felt that serving in the army was something he simply had to do.

There are many other stories like Szulem’s that have been forgotten – stories of Jewish, Italian, Greek, German and Chinese men that challenge the common cliché of the Aussie ‘dinkum’ soldier. These men and the essential roles they played in wartime offer a pertinent reminder of the value of a muticultural Australia. There is no charge for this event but bookings are required. Wadawurrung Dja: Awakening Country - The Art of Deanne Gilson Dr Deanne Gilson is a Proud Wadawurrung woman, emerging elder, cultural educator and award-winning visual artist from Ballarat in Victoria. Deanne works primarily in clay, painting, digital imagery and fabric design. Deanne’s new exhibition Wadawurrung Dja: Awakening Country, features a vibrant mix of twenty paintings and textile works. Through her work, Deanne captures the changes throughout the six Wadawurrung seasons by painting her Dja (Country), people, plants and animals. Wadawurrung Dja: Awakening Country is a celebration of new life as each season brings about subtle changes of birds nesting in the cool season, flowers blooming with life and the deep cultural knowledge embedded within the trees. The six seasons artworks capture one being traversed through different layers of country from the under country to the sky country, all is accepted as being linked as one.

The Bogong Moth Ceremony highlights that country is changing with the environmental changes happening now, with the moth being on the endangered list. Deanne uses ochre she gathers herself from country and has revived this practice on Wadawurrung land, walking gently on country and only using what she needs. Listening to the ancestors through the trees whispering and being aware of the changes taking place. Deanne’s practice allows a space for personal healing to take place and reconnecting to her lost and stolen women’s business that dates back to pre-colonisation. Thus, creating new links to draw upon in her art practice, education and personal life today.

What’s Happening... Dinner is served: this simple Italian menu is novice-proof If summer is for fresh salads and light bites, winter is for comfort food like casseroles and pasta. Italian cuisine, in particular, lends itself well to wintertime cooking because it’s all about simple ingredients, straightforward processes and big, bold flavours. To celebrate the start of pasta season, we reached out to the soon to be author and influencer, Charlotte Ree, to design a feasting menu especially for you. Ahead, you’ll find three modern recipes based on classic Italian fare that taste just like Nonna makes it. From homemade garlic bread and handmade potato gnocchi with salsiccia e cime di rapa to a Nutella panna cotta, it’s all delizioso. Try this recipe >

Geelong Waterfront A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront. The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

Poppy Kettle Playground This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons. Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps. JUNE 2022 | FIND GEELONG

Cunningham Pier Geelong Cunningham Pier is one of the most recognisable structures on the Geelong Waterfront. Opening in the mid-1850s it was originally known as Railway Pier. It was an important part of the Geelong Port and you can still see the train lines that were used to transport cargo to the end of the pier. The pier stretches 250 metres out over Corio Bay and its bright white building is a standout feature of the foreshore. The two-storey weatherboard building houses the Wah Bar and Asian food restaurant (bao buns!), Wah Wah Gee. The Pier Geelong function centre is also located here. A large part of this Geelong pier is dedicated to car parking and a convenient covered walkway provides shelter as you walk along the train tracks. Cunningham Pier fishing has always been popular and in keeping with tradition, local anglers continue to use it.

Geelong Arts & Cultural Precinct The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Skate Parks In Geelong We have more skate parks per capita than any other municipality in Australia. Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets. We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events. Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong? Read about our skate program.

The Old Paper Mills Hubcaps To Creative Hubs is the title for a series of short films about creative Geelong. Hubcaps are a reminder of Ford as a major employer before pulling out in 2016. Vacant industrial spaces such as factories and wool mills have become creative villages. I stayed in a Vrbo in the Old Paper Mills (1878). In Victorian times, this bluestone mill pulped rags to make paper. The dramatic waterfall setting reminded me of the cover of George Eliot’s novel The Mill and the Floss. The present owner, Alex Robins, has lovingly restored what he refers to as an Industrial Cathedral. The old mill is a labyrinth of galleries, studios, workshops, and boutique shops with handmade goods. Enjoy a coffee at The Door Gallery Cafe surrounded by antique Indian doors. Provenance Wines has a cellar door and restaurant in the main building. Enjoy tastings matched with bite-sized food pairings. Rone painted one of his famous esoteric faces on the back wall. As street art is so transient, it’s great to see a lasting testament to his work. JUNE 2022 | FIND GEELONG

Western Beach People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s. In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

Rippleside Park Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past enroute to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

Steampacket Gardens Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee. A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing. On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel. There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork. The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats. You can read about other popular Geelong markets here.

The Carousel The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel. One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today. Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies. A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction. Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00. The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions. Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

Minimum Pension Drawdown Rates for FY 22-23 Provides Relief to Retirees. income needs,” he said. “In most cases, where you have previously chosen the minimum pension amount, the fund will automatically apply the 50 per cent reduction, so it’s a matter of assessing whether [it] still meets their needs with regards to cost of living pressures and the like.” While this recent announcement is simply an extension of the current temporary rules, to ensure the optimal outcome for clients, it is important to understand that the legislation halves the drawdown rates themselves.

RETIREMENT By Warren Strybosch

The reduction in the superannuation drawdown rate for another 12 months will enable retirees to cope better with the volatility in investment markets, SMSF Association deputy chief executive Peter Burgess says. The Morrison government first introduced a reduction in the minimum annual required for account-based pensions,

annuities and market-linked pensions during the pandemic in 2020. However, as many retirees and SMSFs continue to be hit by losses in financial markets the government has extended the measure for 12 another 12 months. For clients with APRA-regulated funds, Mr Burgess said it was worth keeping an eye on any communications the client received from the fund explaining how they would apply the measure. “Planners will need to work with their clients to determine whether the minimum pension still meets their client’s

For example, the normal 5 per cent drawdown factor for the recipient of an account-based pension aged 65–74 is now 2.5 per cent. It is important for pensioners to make sure they do not fail the minimum draw down pension rules, especially those who operate their own SMSF. If a client requires more than the minimum, then they will need to notify their advisor or the pension provider that they will require a fixed amount rather than the minimum drawdown amount set by government.
