About the Find Geelong By Warren Strybosch

The Find Geelong is a community paper that aims to support all things Geelong. We want to provide a place where all NotFor-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing

and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. We value your support, The Find Geelong Team.

Australia Is Going To The Polls By Warren Strybosch

On the 21st of May Australians will go to the polls to decide which party will form the next federal election.

It will be Albanese first time leading the Labor party in an election since becoming Opposition Leader in 2019. Albanese took office at age 56 and is the oldest first-time Opposition Leader in 59 years, since Arthur Calwell (age 63) took office in 1960. If Albanese wins office, he will be the 31st Australian Prime minister and he will follow the likes of Kevin Rudd who was replaced by Julia Gillard, the first female prime minister of Australia, only to be replaced by Rudd a few years later after she backflipped on the carbon tax scheme. It will be an uphill battle for Albanese given he is such an unknown quantity and has not done terribly well during the recent Q&A appearances.

However, despite not been able to answer some of the simpler questions, his party is surging ahead in the polls indicating they will pick up about 80 seats – a major victory for any party to achieve. With such a big lead in the polls it might mean that Labor will not need to look to the Greens or Palmer to secure government. It has been many years since Labor was won government on its own – will this be an historic win for them? Mr Morrison is seeking the Coalition’s fourth term in office and whilst he might not be liked by everyone in Australia, is a well-known figure who has demonstrated he can make hard decisions in a crisis. Where debt is concerned, and let’s face it, no one likes seeing Australia going into more debt, Morrison is hoping that Job Keeper and the other incentives that were

provided during the pandemic will put Liberal in good stead to secure another term. Almost all politicians agree that Job keeper was vital and without it many more businesses would have hit the wall and never recovered had it not been introduced. However, will this and their current economic and fiscal policies be enough to get them over the line? Only time will tell. The Coalition re-election theme is one of economic trust and pointing out that if Labor gets in, they are likely to ruin Australia’s economy. Then if you add the Greens and Palmer into the mix, the question will be, will Labor actually be running the country, or will the Greens and Palmer be pulling the strings? It is unlikely Labor will join forces with Palmer, but no one is sure what deals are happening between Labor and the Greens. However, with current polls Labor might not need the Greens and this is sure to make the Greens nervous. It will be interesting to see where the Greens fall this election and whether or not we see a rise in independents. How will Australians vote? Will they vote in Liberal for another term or go with an unknown Labor? Or will many associate the Labor Premiers and the ‘lockdowns we had to had’ with the federal election and will this actually end up going against Labor and their chance to secure office? Many people we have spoken too are unsure how they will vote. In less than two weeks one thing will be for sure, someone will be in government. God help us all.

Doctor sentenced for failing to lodge tax returns and BAS By Warren Strybosch

The ATO has reported that a Western Australia doctor has been sentenced to 7 months’ jail and placed on a good behaviour bond for failing to comply with court orders to lodge 18 outstanding income tax returns and BAS. In February 2020, the doctor was convicted at the Perth Magistrates Court and fined $50,000 for failing to provide the ATO with the outstanding income tax returns and BAS. The doctor was also ordered to make the outstanding lodgments within 2 months. However, he failed to lodge, and was prosecuted once more. The ATO said the doctor will be released from jail after 2 months, upon entering into a $10,000 recognisance to be of good behaviour for the remainder of his sentence. As part of the good behaviour bond, he will need to lodge each of the outstanding tax returns and BAS.

Find Geelong Column by Deputy Mayor Trent Sullivan When the whispers began to grow louder surrounding the Victorian government’s bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, it was inevitable that Geelong would play a significant role in this event. One of the best things about living in Geelong is the fact that each year we play host to multiple major events across various sectors. Geelong will be the home to seven sports at the Commonwealth Games, including the aquatics (swimming, para swimming and diving), gymnastics, beach volleyball, T20 cricket matches, hockey, triathlon and para triathlon and table tennis and para table tennis. That speaks to our region’s flexibility but also to Council’s investment in a wide array of local facilities. The funding that the City of Greater Geelong Council has provided for sporting clubs across the municipality has contributed to the redevelopment and upgrade of a large number of changerooms, making them gender neutral and fully accessible, and has overhauled lighting at several venues, allowing practice sessions to last longer and for clubs to play matches in the evening. While it is likely there will be additional work required at some of our existing venues, state government investment of new infrastructure will generate fresh opportunities for local jobs, place money back into the local economy and strengthen our reputation as the sporting capital of regional Australia. We want to use the Commonwealth Games as an opportunity to deliver a legacy for our community. A regional indoor sports and events centre, for example, is a priority project for Council and we are developing a business case to advocate for funding from the Victorian and Australian Governments for this critical facility. It is expected that in excess of 5000 athletes from around 70 countries will compete at the Commonwealth Games and I know that Geelong will be ready to embrace everyone who visits. Importantly though, we will also be prepared to make the most of the opportunity to create something really special for decades to come.

Qantas to Launch Sydney Non-stop in 2025

(Australian Associated Press)

Australians will be able to travel to London and New York on non-stop ultra long-haul Qantas flights from Sydney and Melbourne from late 2025, ahead of the likely addition of routes between Paris and Frankfurt. Qantas, which has been working on the no-stopover flights under Project Sunrise for a number of years, is ordering 12 Airbus A350-1000s wide-body aircraft to service the routes. “It’s the last frontier and the final fix for the tyranny of distance that has traditionally challenged travel to Australia,” CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement on Monday. “The cabin is being specifically designed for maximum comfort in all classes for long-haul flying.”

The new planes are 25 per cent more fuel efficient than previous generation aircraft and will carry 238 passengers in four classes, including first, business, premium economy and economy, and have a “wellbeing zone” in the centre. Passengers can use the wellbeing area for stretching exercises and take advantage of a self-service station to boost hydration. The first flight is due to take off from Sydney by the end of 2025 and comes after three research flights from New York and London to Sydney in 2019. Federal minister Stuart Robert said it was a great vote of confidence in the Australian economy. “It’s superb,” he told Nine Network. “It demonstrates that Australians want to get out and travel again.”

9

Before the coronavirus pandemic erupted, the so-called Kangaroo route between Australia and the UK was one of Qantas’ busiest international operations. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the fact Qantas was putting Sydney at the heart of its plans cemented the state capital’s status as Australia’s only global city. “This … will help create 2500 jobs and generate more than $300 million in local economic benefits,” he said. Qantas began operating non-stop 17hour flights from Perth to London in 2017. The airline also announced it is renewing its domestic narrow-body fleet from late 2023, with an order of 20 Airbus A321XLRs and 20 A220s under Project Winton, as the airline’s Boeing 737s and 717s are retired. Meanwhile, the carrier released its thirdquarter trading update on Monday, showing domestic travel demand is returning to pre-COVID-19 levels ahead of expectations. Demand for international travel is also recovering well, albeit at a slower pace due to some markets remaining closed or heavily restricted. But bookings for destinations including London, Los Angeles, South Africa and Bali are all above pre-coronavirus levels. Qantas maintained its forecast for underlying earnings of between $450 million to $550 million in the second half of fiscal 2022.

ATO Debts

– They will get their money eventually By Warren Strybosch

The ATO will not always try to recoup debts owed by taxpayers immediately but place it on hold. This type of debt is called a non-pursued debt. A non-pursued debt is a debt that is not visible on the balance of a taxpayer’s account on the ATO portal. When a debt is placed on hold, the ATO do not undertake any collection action, usually because it is not economical for them to do so. A debt deemed uneconomical for collection action will be re-raised at a later date if the taxpayer becomes entitled to credits, which will be applied to reduce the balance, or if their circumstances change. So, if you see a debt removed from your tax portal account, don’t just assume the ATO has forgiven that debt. They just have placed it on hold and will most likely recoup it a later date.

ATO

update on trust reimbursement agreements

ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

In a media release on 5 May 2022, the ATO has “acknowledged there has been significant interest in its draft public advice and guidance relating to trust reimbursement agreements and unpaid present entitlements. In response to the level of community interest, the ATO said it will extend the public consultation period for the guidance, which ended on 29 April 2022. ATO Deputy Commissioner Louise Clarke said “the ATO is aware that the guidance – which has been long requested by the tax adviser community – has unsettled some in that community because it calls into question some practices which have been relatively longstanding”. “The vast majority of small businesses operating through a trust are not operating in a way that will attract section 100A. A distribution to an adult child who has a low marginal tax rate will not attract section 100A where they simply receive or enjoy the benefit of their distribution”. Ms Clarke clarified that the section can only apply where a distribution is made under an agreement where there will be a payment or other benefit provided to some other entity, that will typically have a higher tax rate than the beneficiary, where a purpose of that agreement is that someone will pay less income tax.

“For example, where a full-time student receives an entitlement from a trust under an arrangement where they agree to immediately gift the entitlement back to the trustee”. “The ATO does not make law. We have not changed section 100A; 100A remains as it always has been. What we have done is publish what is at this stage draft guidance for consultation as to how we think the law applies,” Ms Clarke said. “The ATO’s position is that if the beneficiary of the trust gets the benefit, 100A has no role to play. The ATO is not concerned about ordinary family trusts where the relevant family members benefit from the distributions”. Similarly, Ms Clarke also noted that the ATO is not concerned when profits from the family business are distributed to members of the family who work in the management of the business and then that family member chooses to reinvest the profits in the business. The ATO will not be pursuing taxpayers that entered into arrangements between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2022 where, in good faith, they concluded that section 100A did not apply to them based on the previous 2014 guidance.

“I want to reassure the community - we won’t have a retrospective element. We stand by our 2014 guidance for this interim period,” Ms Clarke said. The ATO will carefully consider all submissions received during the consultation period as it finalises the package of public advice and guidance. A compendium of our responses to the feedback will also be published. The question is whether this will mean the end of discretionary trusts as a taxeffective vehicle? Lawyers are reminding accountants and family groups that the ATO does not make law and whilst they have released further guidance on the subject, it is yet to be made law and tested. They argue that there are many ‘common’ family arrangements involving discretionary trusts that will continue to be low risk. Some lawyers are going so far as to say that as long as the funds being distributed to the adult children are indeed being distributed e.g., funds going into their bank account, and regardless of how those funds are being used, this should not incur s 100A and trustees should have nothing to worry about. Some lawyers are keen for the ATO to take this matter to court as they believe the ATO will lose. However, the ATO is off the opinion that just because something happens

www.findgeelong.com.au

MAY 2022 | FIND GEELONG

frequently, or is accepted as a common • practice, doesn’t mean it is an ordinary commercial or family dealing for the purposes of s 100A, and may challenge distributions going to adult children. • Now, we wait and see, and trustees will have to decide whether to distribute funds to adult children is worth the risk this financial year. Examples in the draft ruling include (but are not limited to) arrangements where: •

Distributions have been made to an adult child beneficiary and the entitlement to the funds representing those distributions have been applied for the benefit of another person (usually the parents), Where an entitlement to income has been ‘gifted’ back to the trustee (or a parent) or otherwise forgiven,

Where there is a circular flow of funds (e.g., where the trust is a shareholder in a corporate beneficiary); and, Where a trust acquires an equity interest in a corporate beneficiary under a share buy-back arrangement involving members of the family group (often the parents).

The ruling, whilst still in draft form and has raised some concerns amongst taxation professionals given the ATO have been working on draft s 100A guidance for more than 6 years. The lack of certainty for trustees and beneficiaries around the ATO’s tax administration approach will no doubt cause concern and may leave trustees at risk of assessments arising from distributions that are made going forward. Trustees should consider speaking to their accountant or lawyer with regard to s 100A if they have any concerns or doubts about their current trust distribution arrangements.

Strategic Planning for Retail Longevity BUSINESS COACH By Deb Fribbins

Strategic Planning is the mechanics put in place, by a business, who have defined a clear vision for their future.

Before a strategic plan can be devised, the goal posts need to be clear to you, your staff and your clientele. Your Vision statement is your vision for the future, what you want to achieve long term. Your Mission statement is the journey you are taking your customers on and should be made clear to your clients/ customers, giving them the purpose to come to your business in preference to your competitors.

Longevity of any business is not by accident. All businesses need to have a strategic plan that incorporates short and long terms plans towards that vision, or focused goal. It relies heavily on, not only setting the plans, but monitoring the progress at each milestone set. The plan needs to be modified or updated regularly to keep relevant in the market. With clear goals posts in place, an organisation is guided, within each segment, in unison, towards the same goals. The strategies will define the roles of each person in the organisation and the area they impact. It will outline what each person or segment needs to do and how they will action the plans. For a sole trader the process is the same and equally important. Look at all the parameters that impact on your business and address each area towards that common goal post.

The strategic plan produces a clear plan, showing milestones along the way, in financial, physical and behavioural terms. The most effective strategic plans should have contingencies built in for all known opportunities. The review process used throughout the journey will reflect the progress and any adaptions required due to unforeseen circumstances. Timing of the constant reviews along the way will vary depending on the complexity of the business and the outcomes. The segmentation of each business varies, there is no “Hard and Fast” rule or template that is a one size fits all. The segments listed below apply to all businesses in one form or another. This list is not exhaustive, there are many other segments that may be applicable to specific businesses, that may need to be planned out for their success.

Staffing: Your staff are the face of your business, are they trained and happy?

Marketing: Is your comprehensive, long term marketing plan in place?

Infrastructure: Do your customers relate to your Displays, Presentation, Logistics, Technology, Branding, Competitor advantage, website, social media campaigns, standards, values, and so much more.

HOW TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS LIKE A BOSS!... and be excited doing it! When your business has ONE BIG ANNUAL GOAL, your team can clearly define where they’re headed.

RESILIENCE COACH By Sally Higoe

Since we’ve emerged pandemic, I feel a hunger!

from

the

...yet I’m seeing that’s not the same for many other leaders. Instead, I’m seeing an unusual blend of a yearning to reinvigorate, reconnect and reach the next level of growth, mixed with the desire to proceed with caution ... ... overwhelm is creeping in a little too easy and there’s a fear of overcommitment and the need to pull back when it gets that little bit too much. Behaviourally speaking, we comfortable getting comfortable...

got

Comfortable not leaving the house, comfortable hiding behind a screen, comfortable knowing that one of the few certainty’s left was self-reliance... almost a feeling of you against the world. Can you relate? Take a moment to take stock right now... and be honest... Is there a part of you that’s slowed down, holding back and potentially struggling to get your head back in the game? What steps have you taken to go over and above towards your goals this year? Are you moving FAST enough in the RIGHT direction?

(...we are always going somewhere, even nowhere is somewhere – which direction are you choosing?) Sometimes, we think we’re choosing to go forward... but at a closer look, it’s more like moving around in circles This happens when you’re lacking clarity in focus. Not enough definition, likely too many choices. With a clear focus, you’re able to funnel it in so that you can move towards where you want to go, faster... ... because the difference between successful and unsuccessful businesses is setting goals, moving towards them, and taking action on them. (See Deb’s Fribbins ‘Strategic Planning’ article)

With ONE BIG WILD GOAL per year, you bring alignment across the board; as each department brings its own individual focus to achieving the same goal. Your one WILDLY IMPORTANT GOAL is simply one single goal that all the team can fight for. It’s ONE SIMPLE THING that has 1, 2 or 3 steps (only) that hold the greatest impact on moving you towards your ONE big vision. GREAT, GOT IT?... I’m guessing you’re as excited as I? Can you visualise your whole team united? ... ...Communicating, excited, open and sharing as they strive for the same outcome? This goal could be a ‘new clients’ or ‘leads’-based goal; it could be a new leg or development of the business; it could be a membership or loyalty scheme or it could be a financial goal (these are only usually exciting enough for the whole team if there have been new developments that the team worked together on securing, and the $ can show the level of success reached in their efforts). Let your mind take you as you develop this one very exciting goal... it wants to be exciting enough to take a little of your breath away... but not too big that it’s unlikely or near impossible to achieve. You must have a WILDLY IMPORTANT GOAL for the business... And then, once you do... 1.

Now each department defines their role in talking you there (through an

impactful mission statement)

2.

Interior Painting in Winter PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof

While enjoying the summer weather, we often don’t want to think of home improvement activities for the colder months. However, if you are considering refreshing a few rooms with a new coat of paint, winter is a good time to do that. Cheaper The cooler months are usually the offseason for most professional painters, due to the perception that summer is the time for a house make-over. If you are planning a large interior paint job, you could find that quotes are cheaper. As they may not be so busy with other projects, they may even offer to paint an extra room for free! Quicker The wettest month in the Port Phillip region is in spring (October); conversely, winters can be fairly dry. This translates into ideal humidity conditions for painting the interior of your home. Lower humidity means less moisture in the air and as we don’t have snow, the temperature rarely gets too low, so paint dries faster. It’s true there are fewer hours of daylight, but summer painting is constrained by too many hot hours, so the hours available in the day for painting are probably the same for summer and winter. From June to August, walls and ceilings are heat conductors. Factor in your heating systems and in some cases, you may discover that your total painting project could be finished more quickly

than in summer. However, it is important to check carefully the actual temperature of the interior surfaces you wish to paint. If it turns out that they are in fact colder that the outside air temperature, you can consider using a heat gun or even a hairdryer to warm them up. Do remember to open windows and doors to ventilate the rooms you are painting. Even better, buy wall paints with low to zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) to avoid potentially inhaling toxic fumes. One other thing to be aware or: if you live near a creek or water course, or if there has been a recent downfall of heavy rain, mould and rising damp may develop. You must spend the extra time to deal with this first before painting. A professional painter can give you a quote on what needs doing and how long it will take. Better results If you decide to paint your rooms over winter, here are some tips to get the best results. Especially when using water-based paints, paint dries quickly in hot or humid weather, meaning more brush marks and overlapping joins. The water content evaporates which increases the likelihood of chalking. Paint in cold weather dries more slowly. This is actually a good thing. Slow drying means you use fewer brush marks and fewer joins which eliminates the need for acrylic paint conditioners and makes for a smoother finish. One great advantage is that washing your brushes out at the end of the day is a breeze as the paint hasn’t baked into them.

Beware, however, if you have not painted interiors much before that paint can become thicker under cold conditions. It is more difficult to paint with thick paint; it might not spread evenly which will leave blotches – not the sheen or texture you were hoping for! If this happens, pop along to your local hardware store and buy an acrylic paint conditioner like Floetrol which will smooth the paint out for you and make it easier to apply. Whether this is your first go at painting the inside of your home or you’ve done it for years, always store your paint in a warm dry place, and in colder seasons, indoors. Most of us spend the winter months more indoors than our so winter is ideal to use that time to beautify your home. Painting your home in winter also means that you and your family can enjoy the following spring and summer without the burden of a large chore to do hanging over you. Start planning now for your new look home!

Consumer Guarantees Small Businesses Should Know About LAWYERS By John Van Beveren

If you run a business in Australia, you’ll be affected by the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). The ACL is a national law that aims to protect consumers and ensure fair trading in Australia. Whether your business provides goods and/or services, it is important you know how the ACL affect your business. The ACL provides several ‘consumer guarantees’ that operate as a set of rules that apply to goods and services purchased by a consumer that will automatically apply to allow consumers access to a remedy. Whether you are aware of the guarantee or not, suppliers and manufacturers automatically provide consumer guarantees about certain goods they sell, hire or lease and services they provide to consumers. These consumer guarantees exist regardless of any condition and warranty a supplier or manufacturer provides. Guarantees applying to goods: A supplier and a manufacturer must guarantee that: • • •

Goods are of acceptable quality Goods will match any description provided Any express warranties will be honoured.

A supplier guarantees that a consumer is buying goods: • • • • •

That have clear title, unless otherwise stated That do not have undisclosed securities That are fit for any disclosed purpose A right to undisturbed possession That matches the sample or demonstration model provided.

A manufacturer also guarantees the availability of repairs and spare parts (other than for auctioned goods). Guarantees applying to services: A supplier guarantees that services are provided:

• • •

With due care and skill Which are fit for any specified purpose Within a reasonable time (when no time is specified).

Which goods and services are covered? Goods and services are covered by the ACL consumer guarantees when they are sold in ‘trade and commerce’ and bought by a ‘consumer.’ In ‘trade or commerce’ for the purposes of the ACL means during a supplier’s or manufacturer’s business or professional activity which includes non-profit business or activity. A consumer is defined by the ACL to be a person who buys: • •

Any goods or services costing up to $40,000 Goods or services costing more than $40,000 that are used predominately for personal, domestic or household purposes A vehicle or trailer used mainly to transport goods on public roads.

What happens if consumer guarantees are not complied with? If you provide a good or service to a consumer that fails to meet a consumer guarantee, the consumer has a right against you as the supplier and in some case the manufacturer as well. This means they are entitled to a remedy from you to put right a fault, deficiency, or failure to meet an obligation.

Where a supplier fails to meet a guarantee, the remedy ordered may be: • • •

A repair, replacement, or refund Cancellation of service Compensation for damages and loss.

Where a manufacturer fails to meet a consumer guarantee, the consumer is entitled to recover damages, and in some circumstances additional damages for reasonably foreseeable consequential loss. Do you have a small business? If you have a small business or are thinking of establishing a small business and you are not sure of your rights and/ or obligations, especially when it comes to the Australian Consumer Laws, you should seek legal advice to ensure you have a pathway to ensure maximum protection in your business ventures. Our legal expertise at Van Beveren Lawyers will enable you to run your business with confidence, and our costeffective packages will help you keep your profit margins. How does a Salary Packaging card work? food deliveries or takeaway pick-up, venue vouchers, hired entertainment or tickets such as movies or musicals, or inflight food. It’s important to note that if you do have an M&E card, make sure you use up the balance by the end of the FBT year to maximise your benefit. Why get a salary packaging card?

SALARY PACKAGING SERVICES By Dan Nicholls

So you’ve just enjoyed a three-course meal at your favourite restaurant. When the bill comes, you whip out a card that allows you to tap with funds you’ve already loaded using your pre-tax salary, so it feels like you don’t even pay for dinner at all. Or you’ve just filled up the trolley at the supermarket and instead of worrying about the cost, you know your items are already paid for with your salary packaging card. This is the beauty of a pre-paid salary packaging card - it gives you instant access to your salary packaged funds. Every time you use it, it won’t deduct money from your bank account like a debit card or increase your debt like a credit card. Also known as a salary sacrifice card, a salary packaging card has the same functionality as a regular debit card. It also comes with swipe and tap payments for convenient use online and in person. How do you set up a new card? Whether you already have a salary packaging arrangement or want to set one up, get in touch with your salary packaging provider. You can nominate the amount you want to transfer each pay cycle from your pre-tax salary to your card. When your deduction happens, the amount you’ve specified gets loaded onto your card for you to spend as you need. The maximum amount you can allocate will depend on your specific salary packaging benefit (and entitlement), such as Meals & Entertainment or Living Expenses. What can you buy on a Meals & Entertainment card?

If you enjoy saving on wining, dining, holidays and celebrations, you’ll love having a Meals & Entertainment (M&E) card loaded with your salary packaged funds. M&E cards can have a balance of up to $2,650 on top of your living expenses allowance in the 2022/2023 FBT year.

This card can be used to pay for meals when you’re at top restaurants, or shout everyone a bite at your local. You can use the funds whenever and wherever you like at restaurants, pubs, cafes and many other hospitality venues. M&E funds can also be used to hire venues for special events so you can celebrate and save. To take the celebrations further, you can also use your M&E allowance on travel packages that include accommodation anywhere in Australia (remember flights are only included if it’s a package holiday). You can use your M&E card to book the flights and accommodation just as you would with a normal card facility, by entering the card details at checkout. While there was a relaxation of compliance during COVID that allowed delivered meals to be included in M&E, this has been changed as of April 1st, 2022. Thankfully as venues have opened back up, M&E cards can be used at a range of places. They cannot however be used for

It’s super convenient in that you have access to your funds whenever you need them. Having a card you simply carry in your wallet, purse or even on your mobile phone means you don’t need to submit separate expense claims for these expenses. This will save you administration time and wallet space. Most cards also allow you to check your balance 24/7, whether that’s at the checkout when paying or before the waiter brings the EFTPOS machine to your table.

What can you use your Living Expenses card for? Pile up the groceries and help yourself to a second pair of shoes simply by swiping your Living Expenses card. If you’re eligible, loading your salary packaged funds onto a card gives you a stress-free method of paying for everyday essentials and some of life’s little luxuries - all while sticking to your budget. Depending on your employer, you could package up to $9,010 or $15,900 during the 2022/2023 FBT year. Use your card whenever you are doing your food or clothes shopping just by swiping or tapping at the checkout. This type of card also allows you to purchase fuel instantly when you fill up at the station. This is an especially welcome convenience given the current economy and climbing cost of living. Many people use their Living Expenses card to pay bills such as gas, electricity, water or council rates.

Having a fuel card is particularly satisfying for anyone who has dreaded pulling up to the service station or is worried about the rising cost of fuel. FINANCE BROKER By Allan Houliston

The big four banks had previously forecast that the Reserve Bank would begin lifting official interest rates from June but at the May board meeting of the Reserve bank, they have increased the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 0.35%. This is the first cash rate hike in more than a decade and comes after core inflation grew by 3.7% over the year to March – well above the RBA’s 2-3% target. It will almost be a certainty that lenders will now follow suit and increase their variable interest rates across their home loan ranges.

That would be annoying if you’re about to start looking for a property and you’re planning to get a fixed-rate loan, because it’s possible fixed rates will rise between when you get your pre-approval and when you formally apply for your home loan. Fixed rates are always a good indicator of what the future market will do, and fixed rates have started to rise from the turn of this year. Six months ago, it is likely that a 3-year fixed interest rate across the market would have started with a 2 or even a 1. However now you would be extremely lucky to source a 3-year fixed interest rate that doesn’t commence with a 3. (Based on an owneroccupied principle & interest home loan and at least 20% deposit/equity)

In that case, you’d have to accept the higher interest rate – unless you’d taken out a ‘rate lock’, which is when a bank promises to give you the lower initial interest rate, in return for a fee. Rate locks, like all insurance policies, are priced so that the provider (i.e., the bank) finishes ahead. So, for the average borrower, the cost of the rate lock is likely to be higher than the savings it provides. But a rate lock can still be valuable by providing peace of mind. I can model different interest rate scenarios for you, to help you decide if a rate lock is suitable for you.

Did you know your digestion is key to your immune system? NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger

Whilst these systems may seem unrelated, they are actually closely linked. From a naturopathic view, a healthy digestive system is essential for all other aspects of health. After all, it is where all nutrients required to build and repair your body are absorbed, as well as where most metabolic waste products are excreted. Leaky Gut (Intestinal Hyperpermeability)

You may have heard of the term “leaky gut”. It is a condition in which the tight gaps between the intestinal walls are increased to allow substances other than nutrients, electrolytes, and water to enter the blood supply. The immune system is then activated to eliminate these substances which are toxic (when outside the digestive system), and a continual supply of these over time, results in a state of chronic inflammation, and altered immune function. The Gut microbiome The intestinal bacteria plays a major role in leaky gut, as the bacteria form the first protective layer inside the intestinal walls. Many things can contribute to an unbalanced microbiome such as gastro viruses, stress, diet, and antibiotics. Obviously, the role of antibiotics is to kill bacteria, but it kills both the beneficial and the harmful. Care should be taken after antibiotic treatment to restore the beneficial bacteria which has been destroyed. Prebiotics The beneficial bacteria feeds on plant fibre, whilst the damaging bacteria feeds on sugar and refined carbohydrates. Aim to eat 5 serves (where 1 serve is 1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw) of vegetables covering all the colours of the rainbow daily, as well as a variety of in-season fruit. This will encourage the growth of a diverse range of strong beneficial gut bacteria, which will restore an unbalanced microbiome and therefore strengthen your immune system as we head into winter.

Probiotics To directly improve the beneficial bacteria, eat a variety of probiotic foods: yogurt, kefir, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, or miso soup. In some cases, a probiotic may be helpful, and various strains have been studied for specific immune diseases. For best results the correct strain(s) of bacteria for your condition, will give the best results.

Superannuation - Some rule changes from July 2022 you need to be aware of FINANCIAL PLANNING By Warren Strybosch

The superannuation system is always changing and this makes Australian’s nervous to place their trust in it. However, not all changes are bad news. The new reforms will benefit quite a few Australians and hopefully help them have more in retirement. Many of the changes were originally announced in the May 2021 Federal Budget but took quite a while to make their way through both houses of Parliament. Some only passed in the dying days prior to Parliament rising for the 2022 Federal Election. A. Increase in Super Guarantee percentage For everyone who is entering the work force, the increase in the Super Guarantee (SG) will likely mean they will never have to worry about their retirement in the future. This ‘forced saving’ plan, over a 40-year period for those young adults, will provide a good nest egg for them, and it will also reduce a lot of pressure of the social security system. From 1 July 2022, the percentage rate for the Super Guarantee (SG) increases from 10% to 10.5%. Employers need to be aware of the increase and will be required to contribute additional money into their employees’ super accounts. Under current laws, the percentage rate will rise again to 11% on 1 July 2023. It will continue rising 0.5% each year until it reaches its final rate of 12% on 1 July 2025. B. Removal of the $450 monthly SG threshold This is a win for those earning low incomes who are over 18 years of age. Commencing 1 July 2022, the $450 monthly minimum wage threshold to qualify for employer Super Guarantee contributions will be abolished. This scrapping of the monthly threshold amount means employers are now required to make super contributions for all their employees (including casual

and part-time employees) regardless of how much they earn. For those under 18 and working less than 30 hours a week, this measure will not apply to them. C. Reduction in eligibility age for downsizer contributions For those selling their principal home after age 60, should consider the downsizer contribution. The eligibility age for making downsizer contributions into super was reduced from 65 years to 60. This type of contribution does not impact the concessional or nonconcessional caps. From 1 July 2022, more people in their sixties can make contributions (up to $300,000 per person or $600,000 per couple) into their super account using the downsizer measure, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. D. Increase in age limit for voluntary super contributions Have you already retired and received an inheritance? Would you like to place those funds into super? Well, for those under age 75, now you can. From 1 July 2022, anyone aged 67 to 74 who wishes to make a non-concessional, voluntary super contribution is no longer required to meet the work test (or work test exemption) to be eligible to make the contribution. The other normal eligibility criteria such as a Total Super Balance (TSB) of less than $1.7 million and sufficient unused annual nonconcessional contributions cap still apply. The only exception is for people wishing to make a personal contribution into their super account and then claiming a tax deduction for the contribution. This type of personal concessional contribution still requires the contributor to meet the work test (or work test exemption). E.Increase in age limit for salarysacrifice contributions The age limit for making salary-sacrifice contributions into super without needing to meet the work test has also been increased from age 68 to 74. This means from 1 July 2022 eligible salary-sacrifice

21

arrangements into super are available to anyone aged under 75 without the need to meet a work test. The other normal eligibility criteria such as a TSB of less than $1.7 million and sufficient unused annual non-concessional contributions cap still apply. F. Increase in age limit for bringforward rule Older super fund members who want to make a large non-concessional contribution into their super account can now do so from 1 July 2022. The reform lifts the cut-off age for using the bringforward rule to under 75 from under 67 previously. This means people up to age 74 can use up to three years’ worth of their nonconcessional (after-tax) contribution caps over a shorter period. Eligibility to use the bring-forward rule will still depend on the contributor’s TSB at 30 June of the previous year and the total of personal contributions over the past two financial years. G. Increase in First Home Super Saver Scheme (FHSSS) limit From 1 July 2022, the maximum amount of eligible contributions that can be released through the First Home Super Scheme (FHSS) increases from $30,000 to $50,000. However, the annual limit for voluntary contributions eligible for the scheme remains at $15,000 per financial year. H. Temporary reduction in super pension minimum drawdowns The government has extended the temporary reduction in the minimum drawdown rates by 50% for accountbased pensions and similar products in the 2022–23 income year. I. Changes to the Home Equity Access Scheme (HEAS) Following passage of the Social Services and Other Legislation Amendment (Pension Loans Scheme Enhancements) Act 2022, older Australians who have applied to use the government’s HEAS can access lump sum advance payments from 1 July 2022. The maximum advance is capped at 50% of the maximum annual rate of their pension (including pension and energy supplements and rent assistance). The legislation also introduced a no negative equity guarantee for HEAS participants to ensure participants with an outstanding loan balance on or after 1 July 2022 will not have to repay more than the equity they have in the property used to secure their loan. Local Geelong Volunteer for National Volunteer Week

Media Release 16TH May 2022

Deb Trotman (65), a local Geelong EdConnect Australia volunteer has been supporting students in schools for over a year. Deb volunteers in two local schools, Moolap Primary School and Geelong High School, in a variety of roles. She is just one of over 1,500 skilled volunteers who gave up 2,506 hours to support an amazing 17,800+ students through EdConnect Australia in the last year alone. As part of National Volunteer Week (16 – 22 May), EdConnect Australia are celebrating their amazing volunteers who selflessly give their time every week to help students in schools across Australia with academic, social and/or emotional support. EdConnect Australia Geelong and Surf Coast Liaison Officer Sally Edgerton explains what makes Deb such a great volunteer. “Moving to the Bellarine Peninsula 12 years ago, Deb was previously a coordinator of a call centre in Melbourne and is trained as an ICU Technician, having worked in children’s and oncology hospital wards. She is very talented musically and her volunteering role with EdConnect Australia helps foster her passion of supporting young people to have a positive outlook,” she said. “Last year Deb started mentoring a Year 6 student, supporting him as he prepared to transition to secondary school. Deb assists in both a one-on-one capacity and classroom learning support. She even supports the senior performing arts classes around their musical production which she is most excited about,” said Sally. Deb talks about what connects her with the students. “I mentored a young student as they prepared to transition to a secondary school environment – it doesn’t feel that long ago that I did that. I could relate to many of his worries and concerns,” she explains. “Volunteering in schools is part of my life long interest in helping young people aspire to achieve their dreams and goals, help them with direction in this crucial time of their development” she said. EdConnect volunteers offer one-on-one mentoring to students in need or assistance in the classroom with subjects such as numeracy, reading, science or help around the school in kitchen garden projects, garden maintenance, library and much more. “It’s nice to be part of the young people’s learning journey and it’s not always classroom learning, you can help in a garden, cooking, specialist classes or even help out around the school with maintenance or library work” says Deb. Become an EdConnect volunteer and help make a difference in a young person’s life. Visit www.edconnect.org.au or contact edconnect@edconnect.org.au 1800 668 550.

The Value of Kindness in Overcoming Hurt I’ve shared previously in these articles some of my experience of how I’ve overcome trauma and the ideals that have helped me move forward with a positive mindset. The following is another: After the trauma of my Wooreen kidnapping experience, without knowing how healthy and healing it was, I maintained kind connections with family and friends, with people at my workplace and in the community. This helped ensure my personal health. Kindness is one of our school’s key values. Skye Cook and our Kindness Kids Club champion this and it has vital importance in the context of our school. Winston Churchill said, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ Good things happen when we reach out in kindness to those around us.

• • • •

• •

We momentarily forget about ourselves We experience fulfillment A sense of purpose develops that adds quality to our lives Kindness comes back to us – we get back as we give out – we reap what we sow Everyone benefits Our hurts (often caused by unkindness) gradually become unravelled and healed

It’s important that our children see us modelling kindness particularly at difficult times and to people who aren’t necessarily our friends. Our children will ultimately follow the example we set. Some years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of swimming and floating in the Dead Sea. Being a very ordinary swimmer and never having had the ability to float easily, my buoyancy at that time was unbelievable. The Dead Sea is dead because it only takes and never gives. Water runs in but doesn’t flow out. It’s similar for us – if we don’t give out, we’re inclined to become stagnant. As we give out, we are rejuvenated – our stale bits become fresh. Lynda and I continue to be available in the Wellbeing Office. Feel free to give us a call or drop us a line. All the best everyone, kindest regards, Rob. GAWS FOSTER CATS READY FOR THEIR FOREVER HOME If you were to visit the Geelong Animal Welfare Society cat adoption area in person or online, you will notice there is an abundance of cats available for adoption. But what you won’t see in the shelter are the many felines who are currently being cared for in the GAWS foster care program. Although these kitty-cats are lapping-it-up in a home environment with their foster parents, it is only temporary and its time some found their forever homes. There are more than 150 cats in the GAWS foster program currently with approximately 15 ready to graduate from foster home to forever home. A meet and greet can be arranged with these cats by completing a cat adoption application via www.gaws.org.au/cats. Here are some of the foster cats ready to find their forever home:

ID: 52352 7.5 years old Male I am the most affectionate, cuddly, playful and hilarious boy. I’m very confident and curious and I absolutely love human company. I will curl up on your lap at night and snuggle in bed with you. During the day I’m very happy to chill out in the sun or in a comfy place while you are busy.

ID: 55351 1.5 years old Female I’m a stunning, young champagne coloured lady and I love head rubs more than anything. I’ll happily sit next to you and accept pats and chin rubs. I’m looking for a nice quiet home.

ID: 56674 12 years old Male I like to relax and sleep, but I also love a run and play with other cats. Cuddles and pats on the couch with humans is how I like to spend my evenings. I’m pretty low-maintenance and happy to snack on dry food all day.

GAWS FOSTER PROGRAM GAWS has more than 100 active foster carers offering their homes and time to provide animals with some extra TLC. Last year, more than 1200 animals were part of the GAWS foster program. An animal can enter foster care for many different reasons. They may need post-operative recuperation, respite from the shelter environment, mother and offspring, building confidence, weight gain/weight loss or for another medical reason. Each animal receives all of the time and care they need to prepare them for their forever home. WANT TO BE A CAT FOSTER CARER? You can help by becoming a cat foster carer. Foster carers are supported by the dedicated GAWS Foster Care Coordinator and provided with relevant training, veterinary care, pet food, bedding and equipment. GAWS needs a range of different foster carers with different lifestyles to meet different animals’ fostering needs. If you are interested in becoming a cat foster carer, it is preferred that there are no other animals in the home to provide a stress-free environment for a mother and/or her kittens a safe, non-threatening environment to recuperate, grow and thrive before hitting the milestone of heading into the GAWS cat adoption centre. For more information and to complete an application, visit the GAWS website: gaws.org.au WANT TO BE A CAT VOLUNTEER? There is wonderful team of dedicated volunteers at GAWS. If you would like to make a difference to the cats lives by volunteering and can commit to a regular weekly schedule for a period of at least six months, have a passion for animal welfare and are over the age of 18, or would like to arrange your student experience with GAWS, visit gaws.org.au and fill out a volunteer application form. LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500. In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club. There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club. Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions. The local economy is set for a boost as work on the planned outdoor heated swimming pool for the Drysdale Sporting Precinct is now underway. The new eight-lane, 50-metre pool is the result of a $15.5 million partnership agreement with the Australian Government. As stage 1 of a broader priority project to improve recreation access on the north Bellarine, the pool will support lap swimming, water exercise classes, and swimming carnivals for more than 35,000 students. The local economy will also benefit from this significant investment as Kane Constructions are planning to not only use local subcontractors, including electricians, industrial plumbers, engineers and many others, but also source a large proportion of goods and services locally.

Council Branches Out to Support Tree Management Program The City of Greater Geelong Council is supporting its commitment to plant one million new trees by 2030 and react quicker to fallen trees from severe storm events by adding more suppliers to its team. Council has established contracts with six businesses to maintain trees on road reserves and council managed land, with the new panel to provide additional resources to support the inhouse team during periods of increased workload such as storm events and when specialised equipment or skills is required. The City is responsible for managing more than 70,000 street trees and around 40,000 park trees, as well as trees along rural roadways, reserves, waterways and bike trails.

Deputy Chair of the City Works, Parks and Gardens portfolio, Cr Belinda Moloney The additional support would help strengthen the City’s tree management program.

We are thrilled to welcome these new businesses on board to form a panel which will provide support to our tree management team. Our in-house staff does a wonderful job of maintaining Council assets and the provision of this panel will help complement their work. The tree management unit undertakes maintenance tasks of council’s street and park trees, which involves formative pruning, pruning for powerline clearances, tree removal, stump grinding and tree planting and establishment programs. These works are undertaken in accordance with the City’s Urban Forest strategy and tree policies, utilising a combination of in-house staff and contractors to manage the City’s tree assets. Council has also established contracts with eight businesses to form a new panel for the supply of trees for planting in road reserves and on Council managed land.

The panel of suppliers will enable Council to source a wide variety of trees at different stages of development and ensure we always have access to the highest quality of stock that is available.

Kardinia Ward Councillor, Ron Nelson The formation of the panel of suppliers would help the City achieve its aim of planting one million trees in the next eight years. We are committed to planting one million new trees by 2030, which is a bold initiative and one we are proud to be aiming for. This new panel of suppliers will provide additional support to our wonderful team in our efforts to achieve this goal and ensure the City is well stocked with the best available products possible.

Geelong Waterfront A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront. Before the 1990s, Geelong’s waterfront was an industrial wasteland. Today, it’s one of Australia’s top waterfronts with multiple awards for design. The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, or the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront. Port Phillip Ferries are offering a service from Geelong Waterfront to the Docklands from Saturday 13 June 2020. When the weather heats up, cool off on the Waterfront at the Eastern Beach swimming promenade. Children’s pool, enclosed sea baths, diving platforms, all patrolled by lifeguards on duty during the summer months.

Poppy Kettle Playground Equipment for all ages is provided, including for over 10 years. The main feature is a unique pyramid climbing net. A favourite activity is the interactive Poppy Kettle water feature. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Precinct is located nearby.

Cunningham Pier Geelong Cunningham Pier is one of the most recognisable structures on the Geelong Waterfront. Opening in the mid-1850s it was originally known as Railway Pier. It was an important part of the Geelong Port and you can still see the train lines that were used to transport cargo to the end of the pier. The pier stretches 250 metres out over Corio Bay and its bright white building is a standout feature of the foreshore. The two-storey weatherboard building houses the Wah Bar and Asian food restaurant (bao buns!), Wah Wah Gee. The Pier Geelong function centre is also located here. A large part of this Geelong pier is dedicated to car parking and a convenient covered walkway provides shelter as you walk along the train tracks. Cunningham Pier fishing has always been popular and in keeping with tradition, local anglers continue to use it.

The Cultural Precinct The Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s oldest regional galleries with a magnificent collection of 19th and 20th century Australian and European paintings. The 1915 architecture is a temple to the arts with Greco-Roman columns and high ceilings. In contrast to the building’s classical roots, exhibitions are often cutting edge. They recently had a Rone retrospective, highlighting the work of a local street artist who has become world-renowned for his large-scale wall paintings of esoteric female faces and immersive installations exploring beauty and decay. Geelong Library and Heritage Centre tower over the gallery. The glass-clad masterpiece nicknamed “the Dome” cost $45 million and has won several architectural awards. An elevator goes to the top floor. Step out on the balcony with the pigeons, and Geelong is at your feet! Enjoy lunch at Public, a contemporary library cafe with views of the parklands.

Skate Parks In Geelong We have more skate parks per capita than any other municipality in Australia. Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets. We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events. Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong? Read about our skate program.

The Old Paper Mills Hubcaps To Creative Hubs is the title for a series of short films about creative Geelong. Hubcaps are a reminder of Ford as a major employer before pulling out in 2016. Vacant industrial spaces such as factories and wool mills have become creative villages. I stayed in a Vrbo in the Old Paper Mills (1878). In Victorian times, this bluestone mill pulped rags to make paper. The dramatic waterfall setting reminded me of the cover of George Eliot’s novel The Mill and the Floss. The present owner, Alex Robins, has lovingly restored what he refers to as an Industrial Cathedral. The old mill is a labyrinth of galleries, studios, workshops, and boutique shops with handmade goods. Enjoy a coffee at The Door Gallery Cafe surrounded by antique Indian doors. Provenance Wines has a cellar door and restaurant in the main building. Enjoy tastings matched with bite-sized food pairings. Rone painted one of his famous esoteric faces on the back wall. As street art is so transient, it’s great to see a lasting testament to his work.

Western Beach Geelong People have been swimming, boating, fishing, and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840s. In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away. Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront. Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Curving out over the water the boardwalk has well-placed seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

Rippleside Park Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

Steampacket Gardens Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee. A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing. On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel. There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork. The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats. You can read about other popular Geelong markets here.

The Carousel Geelong Carousel The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 ArmitageHerschell hand-carved wooden carousel. One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today. Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies. A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction. Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

Learn To Spend Again

RETIREMENT By Bernard Kelly MBA

Many retirees say that they do not spend on the grounds that they “could run out of money”. They prefer to leave their assets untouched. Now this is mindset is a carry-over from an earlier time, and as such should be re-examined in the light of modern circumstances. Prior to retirement, the emphasis is on accumulation, but after retirement, with accumulation or – at least – a pension having been achieved, it’s time to spend. But too many retirees simply can’t make the switch. The religion of Saving is too ingrained. But surely retirement is a time for a feeling of enjoyment, when we able to develop all those projects that we have previously deferred. This is the time when we should cultivate an enthusiasm for living, as the bleak routine of earlier years is now behind us. Spending in moderation is quite OK – you really can’t enjoy the grandchildren unless you spend something on them, and for the more energetic, there is a cost of course in just becoming a grey nomad.

So moderate spending is good, but you have to work at it. Most corporates don’t market to retirees, because of the prevailing attitude that retirees don’t spend. This is unfortunate as retirees can then be lulled into missing out on simple pleasures. Here are some personal examples from my network of friends: One lady, who has terminal cancer, doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, doesn’t gamble and treats herself to one indulgence every day. She buys a coffee and sits on the cliffs watching the water, the birds, the sand and is at peace with herself. A small outlay (from her modest savings) to be at one with herself.

Saving for the children The concept of saving “something for the children” is also discredited today, as when their inheritance occurs, most will already be financially secure. And most likely they will be close to retirement themselves. So retirees shouldn’t save on their behalf – particularly as over half of the population won’t experience their “estate event” (death) until we are well into our 90s. At which time, your children will be into their sixties, and won’t be needing your money. So, let’s join the campaign to become a modern elder – and learn to spend.

Perhaps she fits the advertisers’ profile of who seniors are. But another couple - who used to travel to exotic overseas destinations pre covid – now is content to explore Australia. They’re quite distant from being members of the affluent “self-funded retirees” club, but at least they’re enjoying retirement, and spending on their own terms. They made the effort to find enjoyment locally, and are not afraid to spend.

Bernard Kelly writes on retirement issues, and welcomes comments. Feel free to contact him on bernardkellygeelong@gmail.com
