In the tapestry of life, mothers weave the threads of love, nurturing, and strength, creating a masterpiece of unconditional devotion. As we celebrate the timeless institution of motherhood, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the profound impact mothers have on our lives and society as a whole. Motherhood is a journey marked by selflessness, sacrifice, and boundless affection. From the tender moments of infancy to the guiding hand through life’s myriad paths, mothers serve as beacons of wisdom and compassion, shaping our values and nurturing our dreams with unwavering support.
In today’s fast-paced world, mothers often juggle multiple roles with grace and poise—balancing careers, household responsibilities, and the nurturing of their families. Their multitasking prowess is matched only by their boundless capacity to love, making them true superheroes in the eyes of their loved ones. Yet, amidst their daily duties, mothers find moments of joy and laughter, infusing warmth and light into the lives of those around them. Their laughter is contagious, their hugs comforting, and their presence a source of solace in times of need.
Motherhood transcends biological ties, encompassing all who embody the spirit of nurturing and love. Whether through adoption, mentorship, or acts of kindness, mothers leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those they touch, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment that transcends generations.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let’s honour and express gratitude for the extraordinary women who enrich our lives with their boundless love and unwavering support. Let us cherish the memories, lessons, and values they impart, and strive to emulate their compassion and resilience in our own lives.
To all the mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, and maternal figures—thank you for your unwavering love, your guiding wisdom, and the countless ways you enrich our lives. May your day be filled with joy, laughter, and the boundless affection you so generously bestow upon us all. Happy Mother’s Day!
It’s no secret we’re in a tough financial climate as we all face the impacts of inflation and substantially higher costs.
And like all other sustainable organisations, when we plan our expenditure, we must plan both with the now and the future in mind.
Taking the above into account, Council has taken a very careful and considered approach to developing our proposed 2024-25 to 2027-28 budget and have landed on what is a very positive result.
It meets our commitment to responsible financial management, with a budgeted operating surplus of $2.07 million and debt maintained at a sustainable level.
At the same time, it features strong investment in facilities and services our growing community values highly.
We plan to deliver an exciting list of new and upgraded community facilities across the region over the next four years.
We’ll also invest more in community-led projects by increasing our community grants budget.
The budget includes strong levels of funding for environmental initiatives, direct support for our hospitality industry, and excellent support for arts and culture venues and our libraries.
We aim to be a high performing council that provides outstanding value to its community, and this budget sets the platform for us to do that in a sustainable way.
The proposed budget is available for community feedback until 5pm on Wednesday 22 May via geelong. link/Budget24-25.
All submissions will be considered before the final budget is presented to Council for consideration during our June meeting.
Councillors will also be available to speak to the community at a series of budget information sessions. Community members can visit the ‘Have Your Say’ page to find their nearest session.
I am Antanita Chrysostom and am currently undertaking my PhD through Deakin University and would like to discuss with you regarding my research project and if you are able to assist with recruitment through your service social media platforms. The project has been approved by the Deakin University Human Research Ethics Committee.
In short, my research project will be examining parent-child relationships (attachment) in Autism through play. I plan to use the Parent Learn to Play Therapy, which is a play-based intervention targeting development of children’s abilities to spontaneously initiated pretend play skills. The intervention will run as seven-week parent-only groups. Various assessments will be completed at three different time points (primarily by myself and some with the group facilitator). I will need to recruit parents of children with Autism aged between 1.5 years and 4.5 years (one parent per family) to participate. This research project will take place in Geelong.
The anticipated benefit of my PhD project is the long-term gains for the families with autistic children through enhancing the parent-child relationship through play. As well to highlight the effectiveness of the Parent Learn to Play Therapy in this process. A key advantage for your service is that this would be an additional service you can provide for families who already use your service. As well your service will be in partnership with Deakin University allowing for further networking and supports.
Our early life experiences help growth and development throughout our lives. Positive experiences with parents are important for children and aid parent confidence. We are interested in exploring this within the autism community.
To play a part, Do you have: an autistic child? or a child who may be autistic? and your child is aged between 1.5years to 4.5years?
And Can YOU:
Attend 1.5hour/week FREE parent training play program over 7 weeks?
Complete interview sessions on your own at a convenient time?
Attend with your child as required to undertake activities at a convenient time?
Access a smart phone/other device allowing you to provide photos/images or short videos (under one minute) of interacting with your child in play?
If you would like to be part of this research project, scan the QR code or visit https://redcap.link/wx9xkeqi to complete your details online. The research team will contact you with further information.

The ATO has advised that it will acquire account identification and transaction data from crypto designated service providers for the 2023-24 financial year through to the 2025-26 financial year (inclusive).
The data items will include:
a) Client identification details (names, addresses, date of birth, phone numbers, social media account and email addresses); and,
b) transaction details (bank account details, wallet addresses, transaction dates, transaction time, transaction type, deposits, withdrawals, transaction quantities and coin type).
The ATO says the data will be acquired and matched to ATO systems to identify and treat clients who failed to report a disposal of crypto assets in their income tax return.
The tax-free portion of a genuine redundancy or approved early retirement scheme for 2024/25 is $12,524 plus $6,264 for every completed year of service.
The superannuation guarantee contribution rate is legislated to increase to 11.5% from 1 July 2024.
The maximum SG contributions base will be $65,070 per quarter or $260,280 per annum. Employers are not required to pay SG contributions on amounts over this threshold.
Government
The maximum Government co-contribution amount of $500 is available where income is less than $45,400. The higher threshold above which the co-contribution will not be paid is $60,400.
The Low Income Superannuation Tax Offset income threshold is $37,000 and is not indexed.
When a superannuation death benefit is paid as a death benefit income stream, how is the minimum pension calculation performed?
As we know, there are minimum pension standards that apply to retirement income streams such as account-based pensions. These minimum payments are based on the age of the client and the account balance at 1 July each year or at the commencement of the pension.
However, when a death benefit account-based pension commences, the minimum pension payments that must be received by the beneficiary (usually the surviving spouse) will depend on whether the account-based pension automatically reverted to the beneficiary or not.
The following table provides a comparison of the minimum payment requirements in the financial year the death benefit pension started based on whether the pension automatically reverted to the beneficiary or not.
Scenario new death benefit pension is commenced by the beneficiary (eg BDBN to spouse)
As a new ABP has started in the financial year, the minimum income is calculated based on the purchase price and age of the beneficiary at commencement.
Minimum incomebeneficiary
The minimum payment is prorated based on the number of days remaining in the year.
The deceased’s ABP automatically reverts to the beneficiary
1 July 2023 to 22 September 2023
$0 Alex had not yet received a pension payment in the year before his death and there is no requirement to pay the minimum when the full commutation was made due to his death. 23 September 2023 to 30 November 2023
$0 No minimum payable as the death benefit pension had not yet commenced.
31 November 2023 to 30 June 2024
Where the deceased owned an ABP at death, the requirement to take a pro rata minimum payment that normally applies with a full commutation of an ABP does not apply.
An exemption to the pro rata rules exists where the commutation occurs as a result of the pensioner’s death.
There is also no minimum payment requirement for the period between death and starting the new ABP in the beneficiaries name
As the pension payments from the deceased’s ABP continue to the beneficiary without a commutation, the minimum payment amount as calculated on the 1 July for the deceased continues to apply until the end of the financial year.
In the year of death (only), the beneficiaries age and the account balance is irrelevant for minimum payment requirements.
Pro rata rules to not apply in this situation.
The full year’s minimum drawdown will be met from:
- The pension payments received by the deceased (if any), plus
- The pension payments received by the reversionary beneficiary.
Alex (age 65) and Sarah (63) both have account-based pensions that were valued at $600,000 and $650,000 respectively on 1 July 2023. They have nominated each other as beneficiary under a non-lapsing binding death benefit nomination.
Alex has an annual minimum pension payment of $30,000 and Sarah’s minimum is $26,000. They have both elected to receive their pension payments quarterly with the first payment for the year due on 30 September 2023.
Alex dies on 22 September 2023 and therefore did not receive a pension payment before his death. Sarah ultimately decides to commence a new death benefit account-based pension with the proceeds from Alex’s super which is now valued at $615,000 on 31 November 2023.
In this financial year, how much income must be received from Alex’s account-based pension that is now in Sarah’s name?
$14,290 Pro rata minimum payable based on 212 days remaining in the year, Sarah’s age and the starting balance of $615,000.
Total income Fy 24: $14,290
What would happen in the same scenario if Alex’s account-based pension automatically reverted to Sarah under a reversionary nomination?
As the pension already existed on the 1 July 2023 when Alex’s minimum pension payment was calculated as $30,000 and the account-based pension was not commuted at time of death, Sarah is required to receive the full minimum amount of $30,000 by the end of the financial year.
As Alex died before the first pension payment of the year was received, Sarah would have to receive $30,000 between 23 September 2023 and 30 June 2024.

According to Eleanor Roosevelt, American political figure, diplomat, and activist, “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. ”But I bet any employee wouldn’t feel good if their leader doesn’t show confidence in making decisions.
The leader’s behaviour affects how the team thinks and decides. If a boss is lazy and doesn’t make decisions confidently, expect chaos in the team. But if the boss knows what he or she is doing, work would be like a walk in the park for the employees (but not all the time!).
A timid and self-doubting leader will result in uncertain situations and confuse members. However, a confident leader will develop a group of independent, creative minds with a clear intention of what they want to achieve as a team.
After all, apart from this, how can confident leaders positively affect the organisation?
Confidence improves your decisionmaking process
Making decisions should be a collaborative effort and open to any suggestions. But let’s be honest, the boss (yes, that’s you) always has the final say.
A leader will face numerous decisionmaking situations, and most of these would have a huge impact on the team. Confidence is the person’s ability to create
a decision without being stressed and anxious while understanding the possible results or consequences and holding accountability for this decision.
Confidence should not be based on emotions but on factual judgments. Have you done enough research? Were you able to analyse the situation carefully? Are you going to accept the result regardless of the outcome? Do I hear a ‘yes’? Good! These are the primary questions you should ask yourself before creating a critical decision.
Effective communication is basically the key to the success of a flourishing team. As a leader, you will need to have the spirit to facilitate meaningful conversations. An aura of confidence is essential to this, as well as when it comes to striking communications with individual team members.
If you are confident in sharing your thoughts with your colleagues and subordinates, it should not be difficult for them to trust you and be more open about their thoughts and opinions. Your confidence and your team’s level of openness is necessary when coming together to brainstorm solutions to pressing problems — they get to speak their mind and help you come up with various solutions without fear of consequence.
If you show confidence in handling your responsibilities as a leader, your team sees that you know what you are doing and trust your decisions as a result. As we all know, trust is essential to all sorts of workplace collaborations, and when you have achieved a healthy level of trust between you and your team, it will not be hard for you to lead them to accomplish objectives that will help your organisation reach set goals.
A leader trusted by the team will have his or her insights valued. The words of a trusted and confident leader carry plenty of weight, and their decisions are ultimately respected, whatever the results may look like.
If you are confident with your actions and decisions, you practically eliminate any anxiety or stress growing amongst
your team. As mentioned earlier, they will get to trust you, and this should result in healthier working relationships not just between you and your team but also between individual team members.
As your confidence inspires healthy working relationships, expect to create a workplace conducive to productivity. Productive workers are happy employees, and happy employees are satisfied individuals who are more than willing to stay with the team provided they are appropriately compensated for their efforts.
Confidence provides a clear path to your goal for the team. When you show your team that you are confident enough to reach the goal, each member will try to contribute as much as possible to follow suit.
Your team members will also be inspired by the confidence that you exude, allowing them to believe in themselves and increasing their independence. Plus, it encourages them to take the necessary
initiative to accomplish tasks on their own, all while seamlessly collaborating with their colleagues to achieve the objectives that you have set.
Confidence shows your team that you’re the right person for the job
Confidence results from the experience and wisdom you have gained from work. As such, being confident shows that you have sufficient knowledge to make the right decisions, develop the best strategies, and create solutions that can provide a clear resolution to current problems.
In other words, this lets your people see that you know what you are doing, and will follow through with whatever you come up with. It should also tell them that, in case of failure, you have an arsenal of knowledge to go back to and recalibrate to achieve your goals on the next attempt.
Confidence, in a nutshell, is a solid foundation upon which you, as a leader, build your team’s trust. Timidity has no room in leadership, and everyone
entrusted with the duty to take the lead needs to be more confident to produce the best results. Also, there’s no shame in seeking support from other experts, if that will help you boost your confidence as a leader. Flick me an email and let’s chat.

So you’ve been eyeing that dream car for a while now, but you’re also keen on saving as much money as you can. Luckily, there’s the novated lease. It’s basically your ticket to driving the car you want to, while keeping your wallet happy. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how a novated lease can help do just that, exploring how you can trim down your tax payments and make the most of salary packaging perks. But before we dive into the money-saving magic, let’s break down what a novated lease is.
Ok, what is a novated lease?
Novated leases are clever vehicle financing leases that allow employees (you) to lease a car through your employer, and have the payments for the car deducted from your pre-tax income. So basically, you get to pay off your car before tax gets deducted from your salary, and you get a bunch of ways to save while you do it. Now, let’s look at the best ways to save -
Since your car payments come out of your pre-tax earnings, you end up with a smaller monthly tax bill. That’s because your taxable earnings are brought down from the car payment. So you basically get a tax break every time you pay off your new car, which means you pay less tax, and have more disposable income.
Another amazing part of a novated lease is how it helps you save when you pay for petrol. That’s because your car payments aren’t the only thing that is taxfree. With a novated lease, you can use
your pre-tax income to pay for petrol, so your monthly taxable income is brought down ever further, which as we now know, leaves you with more money at the end of the month. Plus, you can get a handy petrol card to swipe and save.
With this many ways to save, it’s kinda crazy that more people don’t have novated leases. But, that’s not all -
No one likes surprise repair bills. And with a novated lease, you can bid them farewell. Many novated lease packages include maintenance and service deals, which cover everything from the routine upkeep of your car to unexpected repairs. Again, you’ll be saving, just for fixing your car.
Last but not least, salary packaging is where the savings really add up. By bundling your car’s lease payment and other expenses into your pre-tax salary, you can boost your take-home pay while slashing your tax bill. Salary packaging comes with a whole world of perks. For example, a Meal Entertainment Card, which lets you charge things through your salary packaging profile and pay them off with your pre-tax salary. Here are just a few of the incredible things you can save on -
All your meals at cafes, restaurants, and hotels can be paid for using your card. Plus, you can enjoy food and drinks at special events like weddings and birthdays, and charge them to your card too.
Your card is your ticket to booking holiday accommodations, including everything from luxurious resorts to cosy caravan parks. Even cruises are included, as long as they meet the accommodation criteria.
Need a venue for your next big celebration? Your card covers venue hire for any occasion, whether it’s a milestone birthday or an engagement party.
You can even include your loved ones in all the expenses above. So, if you’re footing the bill for a group outing, your card has got you covered.
Leases that don’t leave you tied in do exist, because novated leases are all about offering you choices. Whether you’re eyeing a brand-new ride, a reliable used car, or an electric car, there’s an option to suit every taste. Plus, with adaptable lease terms, you can customise your lease agreement to match your budget and your lifestyle.
A novated lease is the ultimate moneysaving trick for anyone looking to buy a car. With tax advantages, fuel discounts, and flexible terms, it’s a win-win for your finances and your dream of owning a new car. Ready to get started? Get in touch with CBB The Salary Packaging People. We’ve been helping people save through salary packaging for over 30 years. Plus, we know all the ins and outs of salary packaging and novated leases, so we can make the entire process as simple as choosing a new car. Or maybe, even easier. Chat with a member of our team today, and let’s get you on the road to savings.
The 2021-22 Federal budget announced reforms to the reporting requirements for not-for-profit (NFP) organisations that would self-assess as income tax exempt. An entity that is exempt from income tax to lodge an income tax return or information under s 161 of ITAA 1936.
From 1 July 2023, non-charitable NFP organisations with an active Australian business number (ABN) that wish to access an income tax exemption are required to lodge an annual self-review return.
The reforms apply from 2023-24 income year, with lodgments falling due between 1 July 2024 and 31 October 2024, early balancers may commence preparations after the self-review return is made available by the ATO in July 2024.
To prepare for self-review annual return lodgment, NFP organisations should:
- ensure the organisation’s ABN details are up to date
- ensure myGovID and Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM) authorisations have been established for online services for business (OSB).
- locate and review the organisation’s governing documents and continue to review the organisation’s purpose, obligations and activities.
- review the “existing income tax status worksheet” for self-assessing NFP organisations introduced by the ATO.
The ATO has indicated transitional support arrangements will be available for entities that require additional time to meet their obligations. This may include:
- lodgment deferrals
- payment plans for organisations that identify they are a taxable not-forprofit for the 2023–24 income year
- remission of general interest charges and other penalties that may apply.
As a transitional arrangement for the 2023-24 income year, eligible NFPs can use ATO’s interactive voice response phone service if they are unable to lodge online.
The following entities are exempt from the changed reporting requirements:
Government entityy or charity registered with the Australian Charities and Notfor-profits Commission (ACNC), as they already lodge an annual information statement with the ACNC each year, and taxable NFP organisations, as they already lodge an annual income tax return.
Consider if your organisation is eligible to be registered as a charity, and if you would like to register with the ACNC to avoid falling under the changed reporting requirements that are now in effect.
Only certain categories of NFP organisations are eligible to self-assess as income tax exempt, so it is prudent to make sure your organisation fits into one of the 8 eligible categories and understand the additional requirements to be eligible to self-assess.

3. Competition: Rather than viewing competition as a threat, let’s see it as an opportunity for growth. We can analyze our competitors to identify gaps in the market and areas where we can excel. For instance, if there’s a lack of affordable, stylish sustainable fashion options, we can position ourselves as the go-to destination for eco-friendly yet trendy apparel.
4. Collaborations: Collaboration is key in today’s retail landscape. Let’s partner with like-minded brands, NGOs, and influencers who share our values and can help amplify our message. For example, we could collaborate with a local environmental organization to co-host events or partner with ecoconscious celebrities to promote our products on social media.
Campaigns
Clearly identify your consumer. Who are they? What are your core products for them? What are the demographics for your store?
Simon Sinek says
“People do not buy what you do, they buy why you do it!”
1. Consumer: Firstly, we need to deeply understand our consumers. Who are they? What are their needs, desires, and pain points? Let's say our target consumers are eco-conscious millennials who prioritize sustainability. Our core products for them could be ethically sourced clothing, zero-waste lifestyle products, and eco-friendly home goods.
5. Campaigns: Finally, let’s craft compelling campaigns that resonate with our target audience on an emotional level. Building on Simon Sinek’s quote, let’s focus on the “why” behind our brand. Our campaigns could highlight the impact of conscious consumerism on the planet, showcasing real stories of how our products contribute to positive change. By tapping into emotions and values, we can forge deeper connections with our customers and inspire loyalty beyond just transactions.
By integrating these strategies and staying true to our purpose, we can not only navigate the challenges of the retail landscape but also turn them into opportunities for growth and innovation.

While enjoying the summer weather, we often don’t want to think of home improvement activities for the colder months. However, if you are considering refreshing a few rooms with a new coat of paint, winter is a good time to do that.
The cooler months are usually the offseason for most professional painters, due to the perception that summer is the time for a house make-over. If you are planning a large interior paint job, you could find that quotes are cheaper. As they may not be so busy with other projects, they may even offer to paint an extra room for free!
The wettest month in the Port Phillip region is in spring (October); conversely, winters can be fairly dry. This translates into ideal humidity conditions for painting the interior of your home. Lower humidity means less moisture in the air and as we don’t have snow, the temperature rarely gets too low, so paint dries faster. It’s true
there are fewer hours of daylight, but summer painting is constrained by too many hot hours, so the hours available in the day for painting are probably the same for summer and winter.
From June to August, walls and ceilings are heat conductors. Factor in your heating systems and in some cases, you may discover that your total painting project could be finished more quickly than in summer. However, it is important to check carefully the actual temperature of the interior surfaces you wish to paint. If it turns out that they are in fact colder that the outside air temperature, you can consider using a heat gun or even a hairdryer to warm them up. Do remember to open windows and doors to ventilate the rooms you are painting. Even better, buy wall paints with low to zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) to avoid potentially inhaling toxic fumes.
One other thing to be aware or: if you live near a creek or water course, or if there has been a recent downfall of heavy rain, mould and rising damp may develop. You must spend the extra time to deal with this first before painting. A professional painter can give you a quote on what needs doing and how long it will take.
If you decide to paint your rooms over winter, here are some tips to get the best results.
Especially when using water-based paints, paint dries quickly in hot or humid weather, meaning more brush marks and overlapping joins. The water content evaporates which a good thing. Slow drying means you use fewer brush marks and fewer joins which eliminates the need for acrylic paint conditioners and makes for a smoother finish. One great advantage is that washing your brushes out at the end of the day is a breeze as the paint hasn’t baked into them.
Beware, however, if you have not painted interiors much before that paint can become thicker under cold conditions. It is more difficult to paint with thick paint; it might not spread evenly which will leave blotches – not the sheen or texture you were hoping for! If this happens, pop along to your local hardware store and buy an acrylic paint conditioner like Floetrol which will smooth the paint out for you and make it easier to apply.
Whether this is your first go at painting the inside of your home or you’ve done it for years, always store your paint in a warm dry place, and in colder seasons, indoors.
Most of us spend the winter months more indoors than our so winter is ideal to use that time to beautify your home. Painting your home in winter also means that you and your family can enjoy the following spring and summer without the burden of a large chore to do hanging over you. Start planning now for your new look home!

Ok, I have been dancing around this subject matter for a while and thought I would spend some time talking about “why you should choose to hire a professional film crew”. So there are several reasons but the 3 biggest are TRAINING, EXPERIENCE and QUALITY.
TRAINING:
Camera Operators usually do 3 to 4 years of training to hone their skills with multiple cameras, understand lighting set-ups, recording audio, working with green screen and video editing.
A Director or Producer are also trained in the same skills but specialises in designing the videos look and feel, script writing, budgeting, storyboarding, storytelling, directing talent, running the shoot, and producing the project from conception to completion.
EXPERIENCE:
Video Production Companies have a range of crew members with different expertise and skill levels. From Senior to Production Assistant. This allows for growth but also to add value to the client by providing consistency even after a crew member leaves.
An experienced crew should work like they are one on set…almost symbiotic. Everyone knows what needs to be done, what each person’s role is and the expected outcomes for the client. It should also feel seamless, open to flexibility and with minimal issues.
QUALITY:
This is the key ingredient. To make a good video you need skills…yes… but to make a great video you need to understand your client - their key messages, branding and core of who they are. This applies every time you make a video.
I look at quality in 2 ways:
1. Technical: how it was filmed and the techniques used.
2. Storytelling: how the story is told and how it hits the mark/messages.
A great video should have all of these components and more. A professional film crew will always be able to provide this to you and offer guidance and recommendation on the best way to achieve it.
So why should you choose a film crew to film your next video?
The answer is simple they are trained professionals who love what they do and
have spent years learning and refining how to make the best video for you and your business.
When you speak to a video production company, ask a lot of questions. If they are unable to answer those questions they may not be the right fit. Also, be prepared with a bit of information about your project before you call so they can quote you correctly for your project.
If you would like to know more about how Yes Today Media can make your video more professional using a talented and experienced film crew.
Whether you are a Not-for-profit, a small business, a government department or an individual, the first line of defence is having good endpoint protection software installed on your computer. Let’s continue where we left off last month, focusing on cybersecurity and how you can protect yourself.
You may ask, “but my computer or Mac comes with protection, why do I need more?”. The simple answer is that the attack methods have increased in complexity and the basic protection is not sufficient, even for IT professionals, to mitigate the vulnerabilities.
Many individuals and businesses don’t know they’ve been compromised until
their data is being ransomed or their money has been transferred out of their bank account.
An endpoint is a device that connects with a computer network and exchanges information, this can include your laptop, mobile phone and other devices you use daily. Each of these devices are potential points of vulnerability for you and should be adequately protected.
How do I protect my devices?
In the past security was set and forget, as easy as having anti-virus installed on your computer. Today, the approach is much more proactive – no longer weekly scans checkups but instantaneous scanning of files, checking that applications are only accessing the files and resources required. Protection from leaders in endpoint protection vendors, including Sophos,
Microsoft, Bitdefender, CrowdStrike and Sentinel One encompasses solutions that
1. Protect your email
I. Checking links (URLs)
II. Scanning files
III. Flagging social engineering attempts
2. Scan files on your device
3. Firewall inbound and outbound malicious connections
4. Test potentially unsafe applications in a sandboxed environment
5. Use machine learning (AI) to detect similar patterns to existing and emerging malware
6. Revert ransomware attacks
7. Filter web content
8. Provide user training (e.g., on recognizing phishing)
Cybersecurity and endpoint protection can be a complex area. Software can be installed, but how do you know if it is working properly? Are emails you should be getting not coming through? Do you have a server that may potentially be vulnerable?
If you have a complex environment or are unsure of what protection you need, consult your local IT specialist.
Erebus IT supports the Geelong and Melbourne regions and will do a free evaluation before providing you with a list of recommendations to improve your business’ cybersecurity posture.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder caused by androgen excess. Androgens are male hormones which can be characterised by significant facial hair and seen in hormonal blood tests. Because the disease can present very differently amongst women, there can be a lot of confusion about what the best treatment to bring these high androgen levels back within their normal range. The disease is characterised by hormonal imbalance, irregular menstruation (often months without a cycle), and sometimes the presence of small cysts on the ovaries. According to Dr. Lara Briden, there are four types of PCOS: insulin-resistant PCOS, inflammatory PCOS, post-pill PCOS, and adrenal PCOS.
Insulin resistance, leading to hyperinsulinemia can cause the increase in androgen production by the ovaries. Excess androgens, such as testosterone, can disrupt normal ovarian function, leading
to irregular ovulation. If this is the cause of your PCOS, the first step is to regulate your insulin levels. This is best done with a combination of diet, herbal medicine and nutritional products.
Long term inflammation caused by allergies or autoimmune disease can stimulate the ovaries to increase testosterone production. If this is the cause, it may take longer to get your hormones under control, and the process will look different depending on the symptoms. As a naturopath, I spend time at every appointment to look and treat the cause of the problem and well as the current symptoms. So, in this case, treatment would also involve the immune system, and possibly removing allergens.
If you have recently come off the pill (or other hormonal contraception), you can have a temporary increase in androgens, but this should stabilise and your period return given time. If not, or if you have significant acne, herbal medicine is one of the best ways to regulate your hormones. There are so many herbs that effect oestrogen and androgen levels, and if the problem was caused by the birth control pill, your
hormones can be bought under control in a relatively short time.
Adrenal PCOS is less common and largely genetic. This is best treated with herbal medicine and homeopathy to target the adrenal glands.
For those that do have PCOS and are planning to conceive, allow plenty of time to bring your hormone levels under control. Depending on how long you have had an absent period, and the extent of other disease states, I would aim to have an established cycle at least 6 months prior to conception.
If you do have an absent or very irregular period, regardless of the cause, I have seen great results in my clinic in not only returning the cycle back to normal, but also in treating period pain, hormonal acne, and hormonal mood dysregulation.
This proposed budget represents a careful balance between meeting the needs of our rapidly growing community and maintaining the long-term financial health of our organisation.
We’ve made decisions that are evidence-based, financially responsible and reflect the needs of our community and stakeholders we serve.
With our costs rising faster than the Victorian Government’s rate cap of 2.75 per cent, we need to continue to exercise prudent judgement.
Despite these ongoing pressures, we remain dedicated to delivering important services and infrastructure for our community.
In the Proposed 2024-25 Budget, we’ve focused on addressing the most pressing needs of our community. From infrastructure upgrades to social programs, every dollar has been carefully allocated to maximise its impact.
This has been informed by nine separate engagement sessions across all four council wards, where we heard what our community’s priorities were for this budget.
Our capital works program will remain an area of focus and ongoing investment, with an expectation we will deliver in the order of $700 million over the forecast period. This is an increase over the previous four-year forecast in the order of $100 million.
We remain committed to managing our costs effectively to ensure the organisation operates efficiently and delivers value for our ratepayers.
This proposed budget lays strong foundations for us to sustainably progress towards achieving the priorities as outlined in Our Community Plan and vision for a Clever and Creative future for our city.

The City of Greater Geelong is seeking feedback on a draft Nature Strip Guideline and Specification, which will provide residents with more options to create beautiful and sustainable nature strip gardens.
The new guideline promotes biodiversity while considering public risk and safety and will apply to nature strips on Citymanaged roads.
The draft guidelines examine a range of topics, including:
• The City’s responsibilities and property owner responsibilities
• Where to plant
• What you can and can’t plant
• Permitted and prohibited surface materials
• Public safety
A video animation also explains the safety, accessibility and legal factors residents should consider when planting or maintaining a nature strip garden.
The City is responsible for managing nature strips in a way that minimises potential risks to the community and public infrastructure, while supporting the creation of greener spaces.
Mayor Trent Sullivan
“Residents are seeking alternatives to the traditional lawn nature strip.
These gardens can help beautify local streets, reduce urban heat, create habitat and help increase social connections.
We consulted with a range of stakeholders in updating the guidelines and we’re now seeking further community input to see if we’ve got the balance right.”
“The guidelines provide options and advice for people interested in greening their nature strip.
Through clear guidelines, residents can understand what is possible for their nature strip and get a feel for the safety and legal factors that will influence what they can and can’t do for accessibility reasons. Please get involved with the six week consultation to help shape our beautiful city.
Nature strip gardens provide a lot of benefits when installed in the right locations.”
The City supports the creation of new nature strip gardens, as they help meet the Environment Strategy 2020–2030 goals of creating greener community spaces and enhancing the region’s biodiversity.
Information sessions will be held at Wurriki Nyal, 137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong on Thursday 16 May 10-11am and Wednesday 22 May 5:30-6:30pm.
The community is encouraged to provide their feedback from Monday 29 April –Sunday 9 June.

A plan that seeks to support a further 55,000 new jobs to the region, increase our Gross Regional Product by $9.7 billion by 2041 and attract 120,000 people is available for community consultation.
The draft 2024-2034 Economic Development Plan - ‘Geelong on the Rise: A Clever & Creative International City’ is open for engagement on the City’s HaveYour Say page until 5pm Wednesday 22 May.
Community members, business owners, local organisations and other stakeholders are encouraged to share their insights on the draft plan that aims to continue growing, diversifying and future proofing our economy.
Over the past decade, Greater Geelong has undergone remarkable growth, boasting the fastest population growth in Victoria and second fastest in Australia, the largest regional economy in the state, and the fastest jobs growth of all Australian regional cities.
The 10-year plan has been guided by more than 100 local businesses, industry representative groups and key stakeholders who identified the region’s competitive advantages, opportunities, barriers and challenges.
Specific actions and initiatives to deliver on Our Community Plan 2021-25 are detailed in the plan. It establishes the direction for the next significant evolution in the local economy - to become an international clever and creative city.
Geelong on the Rise is centred around four core strategies:
1. Positioning Geelong;
2. Collaboration and Support;
3. Talent Attraction and Development; and
4. Planning and Advocacy
The draft plan aims to deliver:
• a more sustainable economy that is based on circular economy principles;
• an innovative economy where knowledge and talent are the most significant assets;
• a diversified economy that is resilient and adaptive, even to sudden changes; and
• a future-focused economy that defines new trends.
The City will explore the opportunities, strengths and weaknesses in establishing an Economic Development Advisory Board and present these options to Council at its August meeting.
“Geelong on the Rise is about a sustained elevation and evolution of the Geelong economy.
Greater Geelong has all the ingredients required to be a significant economic player nationally and internationally, with our strategic location, industrial infrastructure, innovative mindset, thriving community and beautiful natural environment.”
“The draft 2024-2034 Economic Development Plan represents a significant step towards realising our long-term vision of becoming a prosperous, sustainable, innovative, and creative city-region.
We are seeking to capitalise on emerging growth industries and provide more equitable and inclusive economic development to ensure the entire community benefits from future growth.”
Deputy Mayor Anthony AitkenThe plan celebrates our past and identifies our economic future.
It builds on the rich diversity of industry clusters that will underpin Geelong’s success for years to come.
Council aspires to be a leader and partner to key industry, government and stakeholder bodies to ensure the success of the Economic Development Plan.
Whether you’re a resident, business owner or work in a local organisation, please take a read of this draft plan and share your insights.
or reinstated to the four-year capital works program include:
Libraries have received a jump in funding to $15.5 million, including a direct cash contribution to the Geelong Regional Library Corporation of almost $14.52 million.
The $1.87 million cash contribution increase on 2023-24 levels will cover the GRLC’s operating costs for next financial year, including the new Armstrong Creek library once it opens.
Mayor Trent Sullivan:
“With inflation still rising at a faster rate than the 2.75 per cent rate cap, we’re no different to most local governments in facing a challenge to balance our books.
We’re pleased that we’ve managed to deliver a small operating surplus while budgeting for a long list of exciting community facilities, continuing to support services our residents really value, and making important investments for our future.
The budget is responsible and will help us remain financially sustainable, but happily there’s also lots in it for the community.”
Our Council has released its Proposed 2024-25 to 2027-28 Budget for community feedback.
The budget aims to deliver facilities and services to meet the community’s needs, while helping the Council remain financially sustainable in a challenging economic environment.
The proposed budget forecasts a small operating surplus of $2.07 million in 2024-25, while containing total average rate rises to the 2.75 per cent Victorian Government cap.
The Council’s strong focus on new and upgraded facilities to cater for Greater Geelong’s growing population will continue.
A proposed capital works program totalling $210.5 million in 2024-25 and $752.6 million over the next four years will result in new or improved sporting facilities, community centres, parks and reserves across the region.
The works will be delivered via a combination of direct Council funding, state and federal government grants, and developer contributions.
• Pavilion and athletics facilities upgrade at Landy Field, South Geelong;
• redevelopment of the Chilwell Library;
• flood mitigation works in Kyema Drive, Lara;
• female-friendly changeroom upgrade at Queens Park, Highton; and
• a new bike park in Ocean Grove.
In addition, the budget includes significant investment for environmental protection initiatives, including capital funding to enable the City to introduce a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) kerbside collection service in the coming years, with materials processed locally.
There is also extra funding in 2024-25 to support community-led projects, with the Community Grants allocation lifted by $431,000 to just under $4.48 million.
The budget includes measures to help stimulate the local economy, with commercial and industrial rates further decreasing in line with a 10-year plan put in place in 2021, and fees for al fresco dining and busking cut in half.
CEO Ali Wastie:
“Thanks to sound financial management and strong leadership from our Council, we have a draft budget that maintains or increases the level of investment in all of the areas we believe our community sees as very important.
We are continuing to focus on the things that are core to our role as a local government, while also making budget decisions that highlight our aim to cement Geelong as Australia’s premier regional city.”

The City thanks residents, visitors to Geelong, landowners, occupiers and other stakeholders who gave their feedback on the Draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan over 75 days, ending 11 February.
The draft proposal suggests turning the city block bound by Malop, Yarra, Ryrie and Moorabool streets into the thriving heart of Geelong. This includes transforming Little Malop Central into a more inclusive and accessible gathering spot.
Our online survey attracted feedback from 257 people with more than 180 people identifying as local residents, and 73 people attended our four dropin sessions. The webpage received 9,263 views from 6,609 visitors.
Full support for the draft masterplan hit 33.08 per cent, with 33.84 per cent of respondents in support. Just over 17 per cent of people were undecided. Nearly 16 per cent of respondents were either strongly against or didn’t support the draft masterplan.
When asked what excited them about the draft masterplan, comments from respondents included:
• the opportunity for renewal and urban regeneration;
• laneway activation;
• events, arts and culture;
• more respect to heritage features and character; and
• good mix of uses.
Forty-three per cent strongly supported the masterplan’s vision for the quarter, 27 per cent were in support and 14.8 per cent were undecided. Key themes included the inclusion of more retail and entertainment, opportunities for outdoor dining and an Eat Street, pedestrian friendly public spaces, opportunities for a fresh food market and the respectful retention of heritage elements.
A total of 11.8 per cent of survey recipients said they were strongly against the vision, with 3.4 per cent against it. Their reasons included concerns about insufficient parking, not relocating or decentralising the bus interchange, anti-social behaviours in the area, traffic congestion and the vision’s inclusiveness of all user groups.
The City also sought feedback from the Department of Transport and Planning, Council’s LBBTQIA+ Advisory Committee, the City’s Youth Council, Committee for Geelong, Public Transport Users Association and Geelong Authority.
Mayor Trent Sullivan
“I’m pleased with the level of engagement on the draft plan for the strategic location.
Council is appreciative of the community and stakeholders who took the time to review the Draft Market Square Quarter Masterplan and share their thoughts.
It’s important we get the vision for this area right as it is a vital part of our region’s social and economic prosperity.”
Councillor Peter Murrihy
“Key opportunities and issues has been identified by the community.
This second round of engagement will inform the final Market Square Quarter Masterplan before Council adoption later this year.

The Commissioner of Taxation now has the power to allow companies to reduce their FBT compliance costs by utilising other corporate tax records.
This measure reduces the complexity of FBT compliance obligations as employers can rely on other substantiation documents to finalise FBT returns.
Employers may still choose to use approved forms such as employee declarations and the prescribed forms detailing the fringe benefits provided to employees and associates if they wish. In some instances, it may benefit an employer to continue using standard FBT measures.
The effective start date for the change will be 1 April 2024 (commencement date of the 2025 FBT year).

Pensioners and those on Veterans' entitlements will be enticed back into the workforce with an increase to their work bonus concession balance. This measure is being supplemented with an increase to the time limit for the suspension of pension entitlement from 12 weeks to 2 years. This means if a pensioner earns too much income over a period of time, their pension will be suspended instead of cancelled.
Effective from 1 January 2024, all pensioners over pension age and eligible Veterans now have a maximum work bonus balance limit of $11,800 up from $7,800 and all new age pension recipients have a maximum work bonus income balance of $4,000 (previously nil). Also effective from 1 July 2024, employment income nil rate will be doubled to 24 weeks (previously 12 weeks) for income support recipients.
The ATO has finalised guidance on whether an asset that is made up of a number of components (a composite item) is itself a depreciating asset, or whether one or more of its components are separate depreciating assets.
The Taxation Ruling TR 2024/1 provides the Commissioner’s view on identifying the relevant depreciating asset and hence its effective life and depreciation rate for the purposes of Div 40 of ITAA 1997.
Guiding principles have also been provided to help ascertain the level of “interest in the underlying asset” and apply the decline in value provisions for the purposes of s 40-35.
This Ruling does not address Div 43, which provides deductions for certain capital works expenditure.
The Labor government announced changes to personal tax rates that will provide a tax cut for every Australian taxpayer commencing from 1 July 2024.
Changing the original course of action, as announced by the previous Coalition government, the new tax changes aim to focus on the low and middle income earners and provide cost-of-living relief.
The Medicare levy low-income thresholds for 2023-24 have also been increased, reducing or eliminating the amount of Medicare levy paid by Australians on lower incomes.
The bills amending income tax rate thresholds, tax rates for individuals and Medicare levy low-income thresholds, have now received Parliamentary approval to become law.

In an initiative to promote women’s economic equality, the Labor government has announced plans to pay superannuation on paid parental leave (PPL) for government-funded payments from 1 July 2025.
If enacted, this measure will provide parents who access the PPL government scheme with super contributions paid into their nominated super account equivalent to 12% of their leave pay.
An expansion to Australia’s PPL is also currently before the Senate, which will give families an additional 6 weeks of PPL, increasing to 22 weeks from July 2024, 24 weeks from July 2025, and 26 weeks from July 2026.
This measure is currently in the announcement stage and requires parliamentary approval to become law.

Melbourne City Mission (MCM) is a leading community support organisation working alongside people to live the life they aspire to, their way, providing a broad range of support through more than 80 programs, including homelessness, housing, disability, mental health, early childhood and education, child and family services and home based palliative care.
For 170 years, MCM has sought to create inclusive, fair and just communities across Victoria, to ensure all people have equal access to opportunities.
MCM disrupts disadvantage, focusing on creating new possibilities for children, young people and adults experiencing disadvantage. Its range of services, and presence across Victoria continues to expand, as MCM identifies new opportunities for positive change.
While MCM has adapted and changed over the years, one thing has remained the same — the organisation’s passion for supporting people experiencing disadvantage. MCM responds to the changing needs of communities and ensures every person is given the opportunity to live their best life. The not for profit’s vibrant and riveting history has formed the MCM people see and experience today and is a testament to the great things people can achieve when they work together.
In the 1850’s, boatloads of immigrants flocked to Victoria with the promise of quick fortunes. Populations soared with the allure of riches and most who sought their fortune never found it and families — especially women and children — suffered. Overcrowding led to poverty and, as the population grew, social order ebbed.
The need for relief was undeniable. Within the chaos Hester Hornbrook and Dr John Singleton united to form an ideal that would lead to the birth of Melbourne City Mission.
Leading the charge of far-reaching care of Melburnians, MCM quickly achieved a number of “firsts” in Victoria. Gaps were identified and new services were established to offer ground-breaking support to the people who needed it most.
Driven from an identified necessity MCM has grown exponentially over the past 170 years and has continued to evolve to remain relevant and contemporary supporting people of all cultures and faiths to achieve their best life, their way.
Today, MCM works to help young people experiencing and get back on track as soon as possible. Services, a central hub for crisis accommodation aged 12 to 25, is a place where young people referrals and receive personalised care such and more.
In addition to providing a full suite of support mobile workforce takes to the streets. The Frontyard engage hard-to-reach groups of young people

A safe place to sleep, even if for 6 to 8 weeks, represents a significant positive step for individuals like Ben. It offers a sense of security and stability, vital for trauma survivors and foundational for building a more secure future.
Ben’s story underscores the importance of comprehensive support systems, addressing immediate needs and providing a holistic approach to long-term recovery.
At Frontyard, Ben found a safe place and also a compassionate community that understood his struggles and individual needs. Your support can help sustain this crucial work, providing shelter and access to essential resources—hygiene, healthcare, healthy meals—and, more importantly, the support and guidance needed to rebuild lives.
Currently, on any given night, over 7,600 young people aged 12-24 are experiencing homelessness in Victoria, which is a staggering 19.7% increase since 2016. For many young people the harsh reality is that they lack a safe and secure place to live.
The Power of Community rallies once again to make the change that’s desperately needed for youth homelessness.
Now in its 11th year, this pivotal fundraising event, MCM Sleep At The ‘G, continues to raise awareness and vital funds to support thousands of young Victorians who are without a safe place to call home.
Vicki Sutton, CEO Melbourne City Mission explains:
“The support of the community couldn’t come at a more important time - we are the largest youth refuge provider in Victoria, and our refuge beds are full every night. However together, we have the power to end youth homelessness and we are calling on the community to join us on Thursday 16 May for this iconic and life changing event.”
The business community will join the wider community for this very special night and an opportunity, through fundraising, to help provide stable, supportive homes to help young Victorians become independent, thriving adults.
Robert Collie, Chairman of the Deloitte Foundation says:
“This event is extremely close to my heart and I believe we all have the power within us to make a difference in the lives of young people facing adversity. It’s our responsibility and we can show what the power of action can achieve.”
Vicki Sutton, CEO Melbourne City Mission goes on to say:
“MCM Sleep At The ’G provides connection between like-minded community members, empowered to provide support where support is needed to helpVictorian youth and the very important work of MCM. This is a great opportunity for Victorian businesses to invite their staff, their clients and their communities to support such an important cause and help end youth homelessness.”
Leah, a long time supporter of MCM Sleep At The ‘G, participated in her first event in 2016 and firmly believes that young people shouldn’t have to worry about basic necessities such as food and somewhere safe to sleep. Leah says ‘the best part of the MCM Sleep At The ‘G is the atmosphere and energy of everyone coming together in unity to make a difference”.

As the weather cools here, many residents are planning their annual trips north to seek warmer climates for the winter. One important aspect of your planning should be to complete a Victoria Police Absence from Residence form.
Perhaps you are heading overseas, or in hospital for a prolonged period. You can be away from your home for many reasons.
Letting police know is a proactive way you can help keep your home and community safe.
This is even more important if you’ll be away a long time.
When you register with police, you provide:
• Your contact information.
• Times and dates you’ll be away.
• Who to contact while you’re away.
Police stations have an absence from residence register. This information could be used to reach you or your emergency contact if there is an incident at your home or to perform patrols in the area. Due to the dynamic nature of calls for police services, Victoria Police cannot guarantee that police will attend your property during your absence from your home.
Be sure to notify police if returning earlier than planned.
Register online
To register your absence from residence online, visit https://service.vic.gov.au/findservices/housing-and-property/registeryour-absence-from-residence
You can also register at your local police station. To do so, download and complete
the absence from residence form: https:// www.police.vic.gov.au/home-andproperty#absence-from-residence

How to protect your home when you go away
If you’re going on holiday, making your home look occupied when you’re not there is a good way to put off unwanted intruders.
Most break-ins happen when there’s noone home. Before you go away, take time to secure your home and reduce the chance of a thief breaking in by following these simple tips.
• Lock up
Make sure all doors and windows are shut and locked, including sheds, garages and gates.
• Don’t broadcast your holiday
Don’t announce on social media that you’re going away. You can post your holiday snaps once you’ve safely returned home.
• Make it seem like you’re at home
Get timer switches for your lights and radio or television, if you don’t have smart home technology. Set them to turn on and off at times of the day when you would normally use them.

Now in its 11th year, the highly anticipated MCM Sleep At The ‘G event, launched at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on 29 February, is set to take place on Thursday, 16 May.
A key highlight on the Victorian events calendar, this unique blend of fun and fundraising promises an unforgettable experience for all participants. Popular MC and entertainer, Geraldine Quinn, graced the launch alongside Melbourne Football Club players Sarah Lampard and Tahlia Gillard.
Victorians are invited to embrace the power of community by registering online to sleep at the MCG, enjoying a full program of activities, entertainment and community connections. Participants – known as sleepers – will gain insights into the challenges facing young people experiencing homelessness in Victoria, hearing their stories firsthand. The event strikes a balance between awareness and enjoyment, including an outstanding lineup of live music, games, DJ, fashion parade, and exciting prizes. The night will also offer a variety of well-being activities for participants to enjoy, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Sleepers will witness the community unite in a shared desire to drive positive impact encapsulated only through the spirit that is Sleep At The ‘G. It’s an experience not to be missed.
Sean Spencer, Acting Chief Executive Officer of MCM, expressed his commitment to the cause, stating, “It’s a fun night for a serious issue. We’re proud to build on the previous success of this event again in 2024, raising awareness and embracing the power of community. I urge all Victorians to come together to be part of this memorable experience.”
Renae Johnston, MCM’s Philanthropy, Partnerships & Branding General Manager, emphasised the impact of funds raised, noting, “Funds raised from Sleep At The ‘G in 2024 will enable critical services to be provided to young people who have experienced significant trauma and homelessness. Homelessness is never a choice, but unfortunately a reality for too many young people in Victoria.”
In 2023, the collective efforts of the community and corporate sector raised an incredible $780,000, contributing to the construction of accommodation for Victoria’s homeless youth.
This year, the goal is to kick the ball out of the park and raise more than $1 million!

About MCM (Melbourne City Mission) MCM is one of the oldest not for profits in Victoria. MCM for 170 years has been committed to driving systemic change including to end youth homelessness. MCM witnesses daily young people seeking safe, stable, and affordable housing. With your help we have the power to change this.
The Youth Homelessness Crisis
Every night in Australia 122,494 people are estimated to be experiencing homelessness. That is more people than the MCG on a sold our AFL Grand Final day! Over 30,000 of these people are Victorian and over 7,600 are aged 12–24 years old. MCM has the largest provision of refuges in the state, and our refuges are full. Many young people are waiting at the doors of a refuge after leaving institutional care or escaping violent homes. Homelessness is usually a result of other forms of disadvantage building to a crisis. Family violence, abuse and mental health are the major drivers into homelessness for young people. But once they become homeless, they face even more dangerous situations; sleeping rough, in unsafe
housing, couch surfing and many others that leave them vulnerable to danger and risks. The longer homelessness lasts, the harder it is for a young person to rebuild their lives.
Homelessness becomes a cycle–surviving from one day to the next. Without the support of organisations like MCM, a young person can become further entrenched in long term homelessness, increasing trauma and poverty, losing all hope of reaching their full potential. We know that 50% of adults experiencing long-term homelessness were homeless as young people. Breaking this cycle is vital to give young people their best chance of a better life.
Funds raised from one night sleepover at the MCG will provide stable, supportive homes to help young Victorians become independent, thriving adults.
Nationally, in 2021 nearly a quarter (23.0%) of all people experiencing homelessness were aged from 12 to 24 years (28,204 people). The rate of homelessness for young people aged 12-24 years grew by 15%. Each night in Victoria, there are only 127 beds available across 17 youth refuges. A lengthy wait list often poses a challenge. This is where your generosity can make a difference. Donations allow caseworkers to explore alternative shortterm accommodation until a bed in a refuge becomes available.
According to March 2023 data on young people coming to MCM for homelessness support, 4 in 10 (40.7%) 16 to 24 year olds experienced a significant and episodic mental health crisis, with many instances so severe they led to emergency department presentation. Of the 12,000 15 to 24 year olds, who came to a Victorian Specialist Homelessness Service alone in2021-22, many had complex mental health issues linked to and often driven by their experiences of homelessness at such a young age.

On Friday the 17th of May business leaders from across Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine will leap from the barriers to sprint, jog or swagger 135 metres along the home straight at Geelong Racing Club, all in support of Lifeline Geelong.
This lively and friendly competition has been dubbed 135 Corporate Dash – the number 135 representing the estimated number of people who are affected by each life lost tragically to suicide (family, friends, first responders).
To earn a place in the barrier, business leaders will need to raise a minimum of $1,500 for Lifeline Geelong by signing-up at 135-corporate-dash.raiselysite.com
Up for grabs is the coveted title of fastest corporate leader in town and bragging rights of unmatched proportions!
You can help them dash for the finish line by making a donation to an already registered business leader or by nominating another business leader to take the challenge.
Over 20,500 calls are made to Lifeline from the Geelong region each year – that is 56 calls from local people in crisis every day. Head of Corporate and Community Partnerships (Vic), Michael Parker said many people don’t realise local Lifeline centres rely on donations and fundraising to keep services running. It costs $3,500 to train and support each crisis supporter. Each call to Lifeline costs around $39.
“A Lifeline crisis supporter takes on average 220 calls per year and each call from a help seeker lasts approximately 19.5 minutes,” Mr Parker said.
Businesses from a variety of industries are already signing up. Will an IT guru saunter past a sparky? Will a mortgage broker get a lead on a lawyer? Adding an extra dash of fun, some business leaders are planning creative and themed racing attire to encourage extra donations. So get behind a business leader that inspires you and make a donation at 135-corporate-dash.raiselysite.com
“Every donation made to 135 Corporate Dash will stay here in the Geelong community and support our local centre helping Lifeline answer every call,” said Mr Parker.
Eight Australians die every day by suicide and more than 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt each year. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44.

Inspired by the profound experiences of disconnection shared by many in our community, the groundbreaking theatrical production, a/lone, delves into the depths of loneliness while uncovering the transformative power of embracing solitude and connecting with community.
Developed by the Project Connect Ensemble and written and directed by the accomplished Janine McKenzie, a/lone is a dynamic original production that explores the human condition with a unique blend of humour and pathos. Combining physical, absurd, and verbatim theatre techniques, accompanied by an evocative live original score by Sheshtin Honey, the production promises an unforgettable journey of insight and connection.
Featuring performances by Xavier McGettigan, Stacey Carmichael, and Emily Jacker-Lawrence, and designed by the talented Alard Pett, a/lone made its debut with a sell-out Australian premiere performance at the Geelong Arts Centre in 2023. Its success continued as it captivated audiences at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, earning international acclaim.
Director Janine McKenzie expressed her enthusiasm for sharing this important conversation on the international stage, stating, “Audiences will see themselves and people they love in the stories we tell. This performance resonates deeply and continues to stay with you long after you leave the theatre.”
Originally developed through Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine, after Producer and Performer, Stacey Carmichael, was awarded one of the two 2023 Ignition Grants, a/lone reflects the commitment of Geelong Arts Centre to showcase extraordinary stories and champion connections through art.
a/lone is a timely exploration of an important topic, raising awareness about loneliness in Australia where 1 in 3 Australians feel lonely, 1 in 6 report severe levels of loneliness, and 1 in 2 Australians are embarrassed to talk about it. The production aims to open up the conversation and encourage greater engagement with oneself, others and organisations as a means of combatting loneliness.
Josephine Balfour-Oatts of The Scotsman praised a/lone, stating, “The work is realized with warmth and generosity as it considers whether a greater engagement with the self might be a worthwhile and effective means of combating loneliness, asking: if you are attending to and investing in your own company, are you ever really alone?”
a/lone is part of the VCAA VCE Drama Playlist and will tour Victoria Feb-June, 2024. Kicking off in Geelong this month and finishing at the iconic La Mama Theatre, Melbourne.

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.
In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.
You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.
There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.
Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.
FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.
The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.
We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town.
FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions.
FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player.

A 100 game milestone awaits for Ciaran Barter as his side takes on Lara United at Estuary Reserve on Friday night. Ciaran is one of the inaugural players of the club and has filled many roles both on and off the park, this year in particular as a co-coach of the Reserve set up.
Ciaran loves to add steel to the midfield and doesn’t mind making his opponent earn his keep. His corner taking and occasional set pieces have improved over the short years and are a cause for concern to the opponents.
Congratulations on your 100 games Ciaran, it’s a small group of well deserved players that leave a legacy. Go Greens!

In 2009, a phenomenon swept Australian television screens. The debut season of Masterchef introduced millions of Australians to a mum-of-three from the NSW Central Coast, Julie Goodwin. As she battled through cooking challenges every week, ultimately being crowned the first-ever winner of Masterchef Australia, off-screen she was facing her own battles, and had been for years.
Your Time Starts Now is the brutally honest and soul-baring memoir of a woman who won hearts across the nation, who lived many highs and many lows, often in the public domain. While Julie has been quite open about her struggles in the past, in this book, for the first time, she is courageously opening up about her own battle in a way she never has before, in the hopes her honesty will help anyone else who is struggling with their own mental health.
Julie will be appearing in-conversation with celebrity Chef Adrian Richardson, “Maestro of Meat” at the new Maestro
Geelong restaurant at the Holiday Inn Geelong. With over 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry, and as star of the Ten Network’s Good Chef, Bad Chef, Adrian will bring a wealth of experience both in the kitchen and in front of the cameras to this conversation.
Book sales and book signing will be available at the event.

Join us for an evening of international short films and multicultural tastes of Geelong with special guest Melbourne Film Director Rachel Chen.
Enjoy an exclusive after-hours viewing of Cultural Bridges: Four Decades of Pako Festa, a two-course meal plus desserts from local multi-cultural community groups.
This night of film, curated by North Bellarine Film Festival will feature an interview with Film Director Rachel Chen, discussing her own challenges as a first generation Chinese Australian as well as her short film “One, Two”.
About
“One, Two” is a short drama film which centres around the protagonist Maddy, a shy and introverted first generation migrant who wants to pursue her passion for AFL. This film captures the experience that many first generation Australians can relate to as they try to integrate into their local community.
Rachel Chen, Film Director
Rachel Chen, born in Carlton, Victoria is a first generation Australian. Her parents migrated from China in the 90s, bringing with them a wealth of Chinese culture. As a filmmaker, Rachel is interested in developing stories which are unconventional, unexpected yet grounded in its familiar themes.
Films of a narrative or experimental nature, as well as genres such as science-fiction and drama shape her storytelling ethos. Grounded within these stories and ideas are a prevailing sense of family, love and connection. It is Rachel’s belief that such values must coexist and compliment films which seek to escape conventional cinema boundarieswhether that be in the form of cinematography, mise-en-scene or narrative and character developments.
Rachel’s Chinese background has only recently begun influencing her filmmaking, weaving childhood memories, habits and stories into the stories she will tell now, and into the future.

Presented in partnership with The Book Bird, Geelong West.
Authors Bruce Pascoe and Lyn Harwood will be in conversation with Joel Carnegie to discuss their book, Black Duck - A Year at Yumburra.
From the best selling author of Dark Emu, Bruce Pascoe, comes this deeply personal story about the consequences and responsibility of disrupting Australia’s history.
When Dark Emu was adopted by Australia like a new anthem, Bruce found himself at the centre of a national debate that often focussed on the wrong part of the story. But through all the noise came Black Duck Foods, a blueprint for traditional food growing and land management processes based on very old practices.
Bruce Pascoe and Lyn Harwood invite us to imagine a different future for Australia, one where we can honour our relationship with nature and improve agriculture and forestry. Where we can develop a uniquely Australian cuisine that will reduce carbon emissions, preserve scarce water resources and rebuild our soil. Bruce and Lyn show us that you don’t just work Country, you look, listen and care. It’s not Black Duck magic, it’s the result of simply treating Australia like herself.
From the aftermath of devastating bushfires and the impact of an elder’s death to rebuilding a marriage and counting the personal cost of starting a movement, Black Duck is a remarkable glimpse into a year of finding strength in Country at Yumburra.
Book sales and book signings will be available at the event.
Every year, thousands of everyday superheroes like you pound the pavement at the Geelong Million Paws Walk to fight animal cruelty.

Everyone
A common theme for Geelong in its unbeaten start to 2024 has been its strength in numbers mindset.
That was particularly noticeable in the Cats’ 13-point victory against the Blues at the MCG on Saturday night.
Geelong had contributors across every line. That started in the backline where Jake Kolodjashnij, Jack Henry and Sam De Koning combined for 19 spoils and 21 one percenters, working together to nullify the offensive threats of Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay in particular, deep in Carlton’s attacking 50.
Kolodjashnij also had a game-high five contested defensive one-on-one wins. A catalyst for the Cats opposed to the game’s reigning Coleman Medallist for large periods of the game.
Tanner Bruhn (19 disposals, 4 centre clearances), Brandan Parfitt (17 disposals, 6 score involvements) and Jack Bowes (14 disposals, 10 tackles) all played their role again. As did Ruck Rhys Stanley who demonstrated his athleticism and work rate late in the game, outworking his opponent to push forward and provide a contest in the air which brought the ball to ground and led to the match sealer.
Cam Guthrie (27 disposals) and Patrick Dangerfield (16 disposals, 3 clearances) also spent time on ball, as did Geelong’s high half forwards who were crucial again.
Gryan Miers was the number one ranked player on the ground and along with Brad Close brought the heat combining for 52 pressure acts.
Miers and Tyson Stengle were damaging with the ball in hand with 10 score involvements each, Stengle coming up with a couple of big plays in big moments to setup Jeremy Cameron in attack during crucial periods of the game with precise ball use.
Cameron was sensational for the Cats with five majors, his second bringing up his 600th career goal.
Cameron was sell supported in attack by the returning Zach Tuohy who kicked three goals against his former side and Ollie Henry marked everything that came his way with three goals to his name too.
The Cats had a total of nine individual goal kickers.
The victory against Carlton saw Tom Hawkins reach 250 career wins. Joining Michael Tuck (302), Shaun Burgoyne (263), Kevin Bartlett (260) and former teammate Joel Selwood (259).
Geelong will next face another in-form team in Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday 4 May at 7.30pm AEST.
The VFLW Cats have made four changes ahead of their round six clash, as they head up the highway to take on North Melbourne this Saturday.
Denby Taylor returns from injury this week while Samantha Gooden also rejoins the starting lineup, after both players missed the clash with the Giants last Saturday.
Seisia White and Kiara Woods round out the inclusions for the Cats this weekend, after both players put in strong performances for the Geelong Falcons to start the 2024 season.
The Cats will be looking to bounce back and rejoin the winners list against North Melbourne, after falling to GWS in Sydney last weekend.
Ruby Dale comes out of the side after debuting against the Giants in round five, while Zoe Larkins, Jane McMeel and Ella Firth will also miss the clash with the Kangaroos.
The Cats will head up the highway to take on North Melbourne this Saturday, with the
opening bounce from 11.00am at Arden Street Oval.
All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

The club would also like to acknowledge Lockie Platt, David Peel and Leigh Heazlewood who coached the club for the 2023/24 season. These three did a terrific job and we wish to thank them for their dedication. All three will continue to be at the club in a playing capacity next season.
Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman’s My Xanadu, who is the daughter of Moody’s 2011 Group 1 Australasian Oaks winner Lights Of Heaven, has won on debut at Geelong on Wednesday.
By Fastnet Rock, the three-year-old jumped well as a $5 chance, mustering to sit outside leader Idhana ($5.50), with $3.30 favourite Buzz City caught three adrift.
Jockey Linda Meech applied some pressure before the bend and My Xanadu was travelling best of the field as they straightened, with the backmarkers struggling to make inroads.
The well-bred filly held a half-length margin over Idhana on the line, marking a promising start to life on the track.
Lights Of Heaven also won on debut, more than 13 years ago, scoring by seven lengths at Cranbourne to kick off a four-run winning streak that culminated in her Oaks victory.
Meech was pleased to give connections a winning start with their exciting prospect and thinks My Xanadu has more under the hood than she showed Wednesday.
“She’s got an outstanding pedigree and it’s nice for the Wanlesses, they’ve bred her and it’s really lovely to ride a winner for them,” she said.
“I think she knew she had it won and she was just coasting - if something had come, I was hoping it wasn’t coming quickly, because she might not have seen them, but she went really well.”
She said Moody and Coleman could ‘book a plane to Queensland’ for My Xanadu, her owners’ home state, for their upcoming Winter Carnival.
“She’s a pretty nice filly,” Meech said.

The time you’ll spend in retirement and the lifestyle you’re planning both make a difference to the savings and income you’ll need. Being realistic and getting clear about plans for your future can help you figure out the cost of your ideal retirement.
“I’ve always lived on a budget and live comfortably... I still believe in budgeting, wise spending, but I don’t feel restricted.
People who are retired re-evaluate priorities and where you are willing to spend the money”.
Donna, aged 66, retired for two years.
Start with a ballpark estimate
Retirement Standard figures from The Association of Super Funds of Australia (ASFA) make a good starting point for estimating the income you might want or need. By comparing these calculations with your own spending plans, you’ll get a rough idea of how your overall spending in retirement could add up.
The Retirement Standard estimates the total annual budget for either a comfortable or modest lifestyle for retired singles and couples. Figures are updated each quarter in line with the changing costs of living in retirement and include detailed budget breakdowns for all sorts of living costs. What they don’t include is rent or home loan payments. Each estimate assumes an individual or couple live in their own home, mortgage free.
