For instance, submitting up-and-coming events in the Find Geelong for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. To help support the paper, we invite local businesses owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you. Lastly, we want to ask you, the local community, to support the fundraising initiatives that we will be developing
and rolling out over the coming years. Our aim is to help as many NFP and other like organisations to raise much needed funds to help them to keep operating. Our fundraising initiatives will never simply ask for money from you. We will also aim to provide something of worth to you before you part with your hard-earned money. The first initiative is the Find Cards and Find Coupons – similar to the Entertainment Book but cheaper and more localised. Any NFP and similar organisations e.g., schools, sporting clubs, can participate. Follow us on facebook (https://www. facebook.com/findgeelong) so you keep up to date with what we are doing. The Geelong Revival Motoring Festival: A Celebration of Speed, Style, and Automotive Heritage By Mary Barnes
Australia has a long and illustrious history in the world of motorsport, and the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival is a vibrant testament to this heritage. Each year, car enthusiasts, families, and history buffs gather in the charming coastal town of Geelong, Victoria, to celebrate the country’s automotive culture. The Geelong Revival Motoring Festival offers a unique blend of classic cars, vintage racing, and a lively atmosphere that has made it a must-attend event on the Australian motorsport calendar. A Historic Backdrop The Geelong Revival Motoring Festival takes place against the stunning backdrop of Geelong’s waterfront, which provides a picturesque setting for an event that celebrates the timeless allure of automobiles. The town itself, with its rich history and charming architecture, adds an extra layer of charm to this unique motoring festival. Racing Through the Ages One of the festival’s highlights is undoubtedly the historic quartermile sprint along Ritchie Boulevard, where participants get to showcase their beloved classic and vintage vehicles. The spectacle of these vehicles thundering down the waterfront strip is a true homage to the golden age of motorsport. It’s a rare opportunity for attendees to see and hear classic cars, motorcycles, and hot rods in action, all while getting a sense of the adrenaline-pumping atmosphere that defined early motorsport events. The Kid’s Quarter offers a variety of activities to keep the little ones entertained while parents can explore the automotive exhibitions and watch the races. The festival is a wonderful way to introduce the younger generation to the beauty and history of classic cars and motoring.
Auto Enthusiast’s Dream The festival is a treasure trove for auto enthusiasts. A showcase of over 600 vehicles, from pristine classic cars to meticulously restored motorcycles, offers a chance for aficionados to connect with the past. It’s a testament to the passion and dedication of car owners who have preserved these automotive gems. In addition to the static displays, the festival also features car clubs and enthusiasts who are more than happy to share their knowledge and experiences with visitors. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about the history, design, and mechanics of these incredible machines. More Than Just Cars While the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival is predominantly an automotive celebration, it offers more than just cars. Live music, food stalls, and a bustling market add to the festive atmosphere, making it a great day out for the whole family. Attendees can browse through the artisanal wares, savor local cuisine, and groove to the rhythm of live bands while enjoying the captivating ambiance of Geelong’s waterfront. A phrase I am sure you will hear plenty of in the coming weeks is ‘it is the most wonderful time of the year’. That is because Christmas is fast approaching, and in Geelong, we love to go big when celebrating Christmas. We might be a tad boastful when we declare ourselves as the Christmas capital of Australia, but we say it with good reason. This year Corio Bay will once again be home to the hugely popular floating Christmas tree, whose lighting on Saturday, 11 November officially launches the City of Greater Geelong’s Christmas program. The tree stands as a true symbol of the Christmas season for our city, bringing together our community and fostering a sense of togetherness and joy throughout the region. The opening night will see roving entertainment from 5.30pm followed by a two-hour stage show from 7pm that will include an appearance from Santa and culminates in the lighting of the tree. Spectacular sound and light shows will then be held every night through to Sunday, 7 January, commencing at 8.30pm and running until midnight. But the tree alone, as big as it is, is just a small part of why we are the Christmas capital of Australia. So many of our family favourite activities and events are returning in 2023, including the projections on City Hall, Letters to Santa, our Giant Selfie Trail with more than 20 locations, competitions and the school Christmas Trees in Johnstone Park. There are too many to mention here, but details of the full program are available at the Christmas in Geelong website. I urge everyone to stay safe this Christmas and encourage those who are in a position to do so to take advantage of the chance to shop locally for gifts to support small businesses in our region, and similarly, to explore some of our many wonderful local restaurants and hospitality venues.

Labor Government moves forward with plans Labor Government moves forward to increase taxes on your superannuation
with plans to increase taxes on your superannuation
ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch
In the next 10 years we are going to see one of the biggest transfers of intergeneration wealth the world has ever seen, and the government knows it. The government needs more funds and even though the Labor government promised no new taxes, they have backflipped and have introduced several new taxes on the Australian people during their current term in office. With interest rates continuing to rise and new taxes being introduced, no wonder ordinary Aussies are starting to feel the pinch in their back pockets. To make matters worse, the Australian Government knows that when people receive their inheritance, the likely place to put some, if not all, of those funds, once the mortgage has been paid off, is into superannuation. It won’t just affect those who have superannuation balances, but pension accounts will be included in the calculations. With inheritances and spouses receiving reversionary beneficiary pension payments, we are likely to see Australians ending up with large super/pension balances. Knowing
this might be the case, the Labor Some key insights into Division 296 tax Government is introducing a new tax include: known as ‘Division 296’ tax, with the hope to bring in additional income into their • The tax does not prevent people coffers in coming years. from having a total superannuation balance of more than $3,000,000. Negative growth in a person’s total superannuation balance can be carried forward and be offset against future growth.
•
The tax will not be applied to child pensions, members who die during a financial year, and to people that receive structured settlements that are contributed to superannuation.
Importantly, Division 296 tax is not a tax on superannuation fund earnings. Rather it is a tax on that portion of a person’s total superannuation balance that exceeds $3,000,000. Should clients with more than $3,000,000 be taking steps now to reduce their balance to avoid being caught up under the proposed new tax? Division 296 tax is not due to be introduced until the 2025-26 financial year. This will be conditional on the successful passage of the legislation.

NOVEMBER 2023 | FIND GEELONG
At this point, clients should not be actively reducing their superannuation balance simply due to the proposed introduction of Division 296 tax. However, if a person is intending to reduce their superannuation for other purposes, such as gifting to family members, settling family court property settlements, or investing funds outside the superannuation environment, those strategies should continue to be implemented. We expect the legislation will be tabled in the parliament shortly and for the legislative process to commence. Many accountants and other interested parties are against the introduction of this new tax but it looks like the Labor Government is determined to bring this new tax and other taxes to pass. We will continue to monitor developments.

Workplace bill won’t force workers off casual contracts Casual workers who do no want to transition into permanent contracts will not be forced to after the government agreed to amend its workplace reforms bill. The laws seek to close loopholes in an attempt to improve pay, protections for gig economy workers and provide opportunities for some casuals. Among some sectors such as hospitality and retail, there were concerns casual workers would be forced onto part or fulltime contracts, taking away their flexibility and casual loading . But the federal government has committed to changing parts of its bill, allowing casuals to stay on their contracts if they wish. Australian Hotels Association national CEO Stephen Ferguson welcomed the news. “The simple fact is many hospitality workers do actually prefer casual employment,” he said on Monday. “Our concern with the original bill was that employers could no longer be able to provide systemic regular casual employment to those workers who were happy with it.
Kat Wong (Australian Associated Press) “The amendments which have been committed to provide much more certainty and fairness for workers and employers and can be chalked up as a win for both.” Previously there were concerns workers who had demonstrated a regular pattern of work – such as a university student who was rostered on every weekend – could not be employed as a casual. While permanent workers receive annual and sick leave, their hours are fixed and they do not receive the 25 per cent casual loading – which is less preferable for some demographics including students, mature-age workers and parents returning to the workforce. The risk of keeping these workers on a casual contract would incentivise organisations to hire every employee on a permanent basis. But the redrafted bill will add a clause to clarify that casual workers can maintain
a regular pattern of work, allowing them to work recurring shifts without being a part or full-time employee. Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke will also amend the bill to remove the misrepresentation offence, which would have fined employers thousands of dollars if they were found to have engaged a worker as a casual when they should have been hired on a permanent contract. The changes were proposed by the federal government on Thursday and agreed to in discussions on Friday, although the amendments have not yet been brought to parliament. Mr Ferguson thanked the minister for listening to their concerns and “striking the right balance”. The laws are due to be examined at a public hearing in Rockhampton on Tuesday, with a Senate committee report due in February. NOVEMBER 2023 | FIND GEELONG

Get this ONE thing right and commit to it

they relied on was broken, and the lack of coordination in a room that literally determines life and death was worrying.
There’s no doubt coaching is an invaluable resource, given how many people depend on it.
I remember watching one of the most inspiring TED Talks by Dr Atul Gawade.
However, the biggest dilemma was how to make instant improvements amidst such complexities.
Nevertheless, it’s your commitment to getting results that get you out of where you are to where you ought to be.
Dr Gawade is a general and endocrine surgeon.
Here’s what Dr. Gawade and his team of specialists did.
However, he has a host of other skills; he’s a best-selling author, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and was recently appointed to lead Global Health at USAID.
They hired a group of coaches (trained specialist doctor and nurses) who would visit this centre and others like this across the country.
If the people at the Indian birth centre had not clung to their education and believed they knew what they were doing, they never would have improved on their efficiency.
LEADERSHIP & TEAM SPECIALIST By Sally Higoe
Dr Gawade is also a great storyteller, and in this Ted Talk, he shares a heart- warming story about how he and a team of specialists changed the fate of Maternal Health, especially childbirth in India. While visiting a remote birth centre in the North of India, Dr. Gawade ran into some shocking statistics. One in every 20 newborns they delivered lost their lives, but even more horrific was that the rate of maternal deaths (mothers dying during childbirth) was 10X higher than anywhere else in the world. The nurses and midwives at the centre also lacked critical skills; the vital equipment
The coaches observed the operations, made notes on areas that needed improvement and trained the caregivers at the centre. And after 12 months of this professionally structured process, the results were enormous. The team at the centre was able to deliver babies in record time and knew exactly what more to do to keep struggling babies alive. Simply put, they were more coordinated. Now, there’s a lot that we can learn from this experience, but what I specifically want you to carry is the IMPORTANCE of coaching.
Same case, you need to continuously work on your leadership skills. In fact, the world around you is changing fast, and you MUST keep up. Just recently, we were talking about moving from the office to working remotely. Today, the hype is all about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it’s set to cause disruptions in the workplace like nothing we have seen before. That is probably on your mind, right? I know people who are concerned about: Do I have to send my people home? Will I lose my most competent staff?
www.findgeelong.com.au
NOVEMBER 2023 | FIND GEELONG
Will AI take my job? Will AI put me out of business? All these concerns are genuine, but don’t get me wrong, it’s not about the systems but the PEOPLE… It’s about being in touch with the people but, most importantly, being in touch with YOURSELF. Because you can’t help others if you can’t help yourself, as you cannot lead others unless you can learn to lead yourself. The relationship you have with YOU is what will make it work. If you don’t know how to do that, you must bring in someone else to support you, because if you don’t, and your efforts don’t work, all you’ll be left with is regret and questions.
If you know in your soul that you’re not operating at your full potential, what’s the point of the pain and the discomfort? ... give it your all, leave nothing on the table – because then only one of two things will happen... it will work or it won’t, but you’ll have left it all on the table. So; ... if you want to have a conversation about some of the blocks you may be experiencing, ... if you feel like you’re not working as hard as you could or want to, ... if you feel like you’re not taking the risks you need to take, ... if you feel like you’re getting knocked by challenges too much – contact me, contact someone – but don’t do it alone.

intellectual property or artwork and asking to use it for free without payment. Therein lies an ethical dilemma. Now the heavy stuff is done, let’s talk about the best reasons for purchasing royalty-free music.
What is Royalty Free Music? VIDEO PRODUCTION By Allison Groot
Wyzowl describes royalty free music as: a type of music that can be used by paying a one-time fee for the right to use it in a video project, without having to pay additional fees for each subsequent use of the music. In simple terms, it means you pay once – and can use it for the life of the video! This makes it a cost-effective and legal solution for using high-quality music in creative projects without worrying about copyright issues or expensive licensing fees. Ok that’s simple to understand …right! Royalty-free music and copyright laws are very particular and we need to understand why those laws are there and what it means, so I have broken this down into bitesize chunks. Copyright Law Example: When you purchase an image from platforms like iStock or Shutterstock, you’re essentially obtaining the rights to use that image for the duration of your specific project or campaign, usually lasting from 3 to 12 months. If you wish to continue using the image beyond the campaign’s end, you have two options: either purchase an extended license or repurchase the image. Neglecting to do so would put you in violation of copyright laws, potentially resulting in fines.
Similar principles apply to TV commercials and video content. Royalty-Free: For broadcasting, each time a new product or TV commercial is created, a copy of the music must be repurchased. This practice is fair to the artist and helps maintain integrity within the industry. It also offers opportunities for emerging artists to showcase their music. It is not to profit from this; It is to adhere to industry regulations to ensure fairness. Online usage differs slightly. Once you purchase music for a video, it becomes yours to use exclusively for that particular video, within reasonable bounds. Typically, the video’s life cycle ranges from 3 to 5 years, and although it’s a constantly evolving landscape, the rule remains the same: one video, one music track. The Musician/ Artist: Let’s talk about the musician in all this. So the way it works for them, usually they are struggling artists who are trying to make it big by building their reputation and portfolio of songs by making high production value royalty-free music and receiving minimal money for it. They write, design and create these tracks for companies to use. They are honing their skills and talents in what they love to do. However, they need to be paid so every time a track of theirs is purchased they make a little bit of money. Land in use or available for use in carrying on a business
ATO finalises guidance on the deductibility of costs relating to holding vacant land ACCOUNTING By Anjana Jogi
From 1 July 2019, s 26-102(1) of ITAA 1997 denies certain taxpayers a tax deduction for outgoings in relation to vacant land unless the land is used in a business, for gaining or producing assessable income or if another exclusion applies.
Structure in use or available for use In order to be in use or available for use, the permanent and substantial structure must also be capable of being lawfully occupied. Premises that are capable of being occupied (whether residential or commercial) will always be considered available for use unless they have been deemed unsafe to occupy by a council, relevant body or relevantly qualified professional.
This also extends to vacant land on which there is no substantial and permanent structure in use or available for use.
Residential land under construction or substantial renovation
The finalised Tax Ruling TR 2023/3 provides the ATO’s view on when there is a substantial structure on land or the land is used in carrying on a business, and the deductibility of expenses relating to holding such land.
Residential premises that are constructed or substantially renovated while the taxpayer holds the land are disregarded as a substantial and permanent structure and therefore considered vacant land, unless they can lawfully be occupied and are (or are available to be) leased, hired or licensed.
Determine if the land is vacant Substantial and permanent structure on land If the land has a substantial and permanent structure that has an independent purpose in the context of the land on which it is located. Structures that have the purpose of increasing the utility of another structure are not considered independent. For example, fencing, silos and sheds are substantial structures that serve an independent purpose in the context of land used in primary production, but they do not serve an independent purpose in the context of residential land and rather, increase the utility of the proposed house on that land.
Deductibility of expenses relating to holding vacant land The ATO has clarified that any interest (and borrowing costs) directly relating to the costs of constructing a substantial and permanent structure on land is not a loss or outgoing related to holding land but rather the cost of holding land, and it should form part of the third element costs of owning the asset for CGT purposes.
Interest incurred after land is sold or business activity has ceased Section 26-102 does not deny interest deductions after the sale of land if the interest was deductible (and not denied by vacant land rules) immediately before the sale.
Deductions will be allowed for holding costs of vacant land if: • •
•
the land is in use or available for use in carrying on a business or gaining assessable income the land is leased at arm’s length to another entity, it is then used or available for use in carrying on a business the land has mixed uses to the extent that the land is in use or available for use in carrying on a business.
Next steps Commercial and residential premises may be required to prove as being capable of being occupied. This may be done by the issuance of an occupancy certificate or other local council approval.
Property developers Property developers will generally not be affected by s 26-102(1) provided they are carrying on a business. There is no requirement for the land to be in active use in the business. Land held by a developer for future development would be considered available for use. Where the land is held separately from the property development business, for example, by a special purpose vehicle (SPV), evaluation must be done to ascertain whether the SPV is subject to the limitation in s 26-102(1). If the SPV is a discretionary trust, it would not be an exception under s 26-102(5). Contact us

6 paint touch-up jobs for summer PAINTING & DECORATING By Steve Dahllof
Christmas will soon be upon us and who wants to spend valuable holiday time with household chores? November is a great time to refresh your home. With the weather getting warmer, you can spruce up your home for outdoor entertaining or resale with a few quick and easy paint jobs over the following weekends. 1.
Engaging entryway
If you have a timber front door, give it a refresh with a new coat or go wild with a completely new look. Red, cobalt blue and emerald green tones make definite statements and are colours that invite guests inside. Don’t forget the doorframes. These need a coat of paint for protection as well as aesthetics. With primer, paint, brushes and sandpaper, you could have this done and dried in a few hours. 2.
Good-looking garage door
If your garage door faces the street, it accounts for a large area of the appearance of your home. Does it look clean or a bit rundown? Both timber and metal garage doors can benefit from a lick of paint. Elegant and minimal or bold and beautiful, a new coat of paint on the door will add to the street appeal of your home.
3.
Gorgeous garden
How many timber and metal surfaces do you see around your garden? A splash of colour is a great way to keep your garden bright and colourful in the months where plants aren’t flowering or the weather is overcast. Planter boxes, fences, retaining walls and wall hangings are available for your creative flair. Imagine how a splash of yellow or orange could brighten up a dark corner or a dull brick wall. The vegetables may look boring but the box they’re planted in could make this the most attractive part of the garden if it were painted in festive green or red. This is a fun project that can be done in stages anytime, each part taking no more than half-an-hour. 4.
evenly across the decks with a roller. If painting, choose a brand that is suitable for high traffic areas and outdoors. Make sure you oil and paint in a direction that leaves you room to get indoors without stepping on the wet surface. 5.
Wonderful windows
For beauty and protection, exterior window frames need painting at least once every seven years. But the window can be thought of as the eyes of a house. Repainting your window frames can give you’re the appearance of your home a lift, along with other window features such as shutters. Try matching the colour of your doorframes and garage door, or a contrasting shade from the rest of the house will give a subtle distinction to your home. choosing to paint everything in the same tones can also produce a great effect. 6.
Fabulous outdoor furniture
Oil and paint your outdoor timber furniture for the same reasons as you do your decking. However, with garden furniture you can have much more fun with colours. Benches can be decorated in one colour, striped, with motifs -let your imagination run wild, paint it in greens and browns to blend in with the surround foliage. Put each item of furniture on a sheet outside, sand back, paint with primer and off you go. This is an activity which your kids can do with your guidance, lightening your workload, teaching them a new skill and at the same time giving them something fun and practical to do. These six small jobs can make a difference to your home and lift your spirits.
For all painting and colour advice, contact Dahllof Painting Services at sjd67@bigpond.net.au. We will be happy to answer all your inquiries.
Desirable decking
Oiling your decking is something that should be done at least once a year to protect the timber from rain and consequent water rot. If your decking is painted, the paint will have started to shred after a year so painting it annually is also a must. Choose a dry day with no wind. Cover and tape down surrounding surfaces like paths and walls with plastic sheeting. Sweep and soap the deck surfaces. Pour the oil or paint into a tray and spread

What is an endpoint?
Whether you are a Not-for-profit, a small business, a government department or an individual, the first line of defence is having good endpoint protection software installed on your computer. Let’s continue where we left off last month, focusing on cybersecurity and how you can protect yourself. You may ask, “but my computer or Mac comes with protection, why do I need more?”. The simple answer is that the attack methods have increased in complexity and the basic protection is not sufficient, even for IT professionals, to mitigate the vulnerabilities. Many individuals and businesses don’t know they’ve been compromised until
An endpoint is a device that connects with a computer network and exchanges information, this can include your laptop, mobile phone and other devices you use daily. Each of these devices are potential points of vulnerability for you and should be adequately protected. How do I protect my devices? In the past security was set and forget, as easy as having anti-virus installed on your computer. Today, the approach is much more proactive – no longer weekly scans checkups but instantaneous scanning of files, checking that applications are only accessing the files and resources required. Protection from leaders in endpoint protection vendors, including Sophos,
Protect your email I. Checking links (URLs) II. Scanning files III. Flagging social engineering attempts Scan files on your device Firewall inbound and outbound malicious connections Test potentially unsafe applications in a sandboxed environment Use machine learning (AI) to detect similar patterns to existing and emerging malware Revert ransomware attacks Filter web content Provide user training (e.g., on recognizing phishing)
Help! What if I’m not sure? Cybersecurity and endpoint protection can be a complex area. Software can be installed, but how do you know if it is working properly? Are emails you should be getting not coming through? Do you have a server that may potentially be vulnerable? If you have a complex environment or are unsure of what protection you need, consult your local IT specialist.

Work-Bonus Boost to Encourage Pensioners to go back to Work FINANCIAL PLANNER
5.
Reporting Requirements: Pensioners are required to report their employment income to the Department of Human Services (now known as Services Australia) so that their pension can be correctly calculated.
6.
Eligibility Age: The Work Bonus is available to Age Pension recipients who have reached Age Pension age; currently age 67.
By Warren Strybosch
The Work Bonus is a program in Australia designed to help pensioners, specifically Age Pension recipients, increase their income without affecting their pension payments. The Work Bonus allows pensioners to earn a certain amount of money through employment or self-employment before their pension payments are reduced. The Work Bonus was introduced to encourage older Australians to remain in the workforce or to work part-time without worrying about losing their pension entitlements. Here are some key points about the Work Bonus: 1.
2.
3.
4.
Eligibility: The Work Bonus is primarily available to recipients of the Age Pension, which is a meanstested government payment for older Australians. Other pension types, such as the Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment, are not eligible for the Work Bonus. Income Threshold: Under the Work Bonus, pensioners can earn up to a certain amount of money before it affects their pension payments. Normally, the income threshold would be $300 per fortnight. This means that pensioners can earn up to $300 in employment income without any impact on their pension. However, with the introduction of the one-off booster payment, the Work Bonus Income bank will increase, and pensioners will be able to earn more each year (more information below). Unused Amounts: If pensioners do not use their full Work Bonus amount in one fortnight (up to $300), the unused portion can be accrued and used in subsequent periods. This can be especially beneficial for those with irregular or seasonal employment. Impact on Pension Payments: If a pensioner’s employment income exceeds the $300 per fortnight threshold, their pension payments are reduced by 50 cents for every dollar earned above this threshold.
With the current employment shortfall, the Government has announced two measures to encourage those currently receiving income support to return to work or increase their working hours. The changes, pending the passage of legislation, are as following: Work Bonus The $4,000 one-off boost to pensioner’s work bonus income bank will become a permanent fixture from 1 January 2024.
Employment nil rate period The employment nil rate period will increase from 6 fortnights to 12 fortnights with eligibility expanding to those entering fulltime employment from 1 July 2024. A nil payment period starts when you report employment income over a certain amount, and it reduces your income support payment to $0. This includes your partner’s employment income. Usually, a nil payment period can be up to 6 fortnights in a row, but this will increase to 12 fortnights, meaning you are less likely to lose your pension payments if you decide to earn a certain income, which results in a nil pension payment, with in a given 12-week period. During this period, even though the pension or allowance is not payable, the client is considered to be still receiving a benefit for the purposes of qualifying for additional support such as child care subsidy and concession cards. If the client’s income reduces sufficiently to once again receive a pension or allowance during the employment nil rate period, they will have their benefit reinstated without the need to re-apply.
How does this impact the amount you can earn? New pension recipients (of Age Pension age) and eligible Veterans will have a starting Work Bonus income bank of $4,000 instead of the current $0. From day one of qualifying for a pension, clients can earn employment income of $4,000 in addition to the $300 per fortnight already available, before this employment income begins to count towards the income test. Additionally, existing and new pensioners will retain the current increased maximum Work Bonus income bank limit of $11,800 rather than $7,800.

At the time, 162 programs in the pipeline had a government commitment of $5 million or less.
Infrastructure review finds billions in cost pressures Multiple federal infrastructure projects are on the chopping block in a bid to ease inflation, with a review finding billions of dollars worth of overruns. An independent review of the infrastructure investment program has found $33 billion of budget blowouts, with that figure tipped to grow even further. Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the investment pipeline, which had increased from 150 to 800 projects under the previous government, had not been managed well. However, the minister did not say how many infrastructure projects would be cut. “It is simply just not sustainable for the pipeline to continue the way that it is after a decade of being used for political purposes,” she told ABC radio on Monday. “There’s been evidence that this infrastructure pipeline has not been managed and not been managed well, and obviously, that is also causing inflation pressures.”
The review looked at about 200 infrastructure projects, with recommendations being made about cancelling some. “It’s made some recommendations around making sure we’ve got planning money and we slow the process down so we know what the costs are,” Ms King said. “We have to do this in partnership, we have to do it in collaboration with states and territories. They are partners with us, we are investors alongside them.” The minister indicated talks were under way with each jurisdiction on what projects would still be needed. “What I don’t want to do is promise people that we’re going to build something when it clearly is not going to be built,” she said. The infrastructure pipeline was estimated to be worth more than $120 billion. Ms King announced a 90-day review of the pipeline in May in a bid to make the program more sustainable.
Projects that had been announced in the budget or had already started construction were not impacted by the review. Opposition infrastructure spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie hit out at the government for not specifying which projects would be affected. “The prime minister needs to guarantee that projects to assist with the congestion in our crowded cities and suburbs will not be cut,” she said. “The projects that are under review are in the planning stage, they haven’t started construction, therefore are not putting pressure on inflation. “Local governments and grassroot organisations have already been waiting too long to find out if their local community building projects have fallen victim to Albanese’s razor gang.” Chief executive of the Australian Constructors Association Jon Davies said critical infrastructure projects could not afford to be cut. “With over 500,000 migrants predicted to enter the country this year, we cannot afford to cut back on building schools, hospitals and transport infrastructure,” he said. “We could afford to build everything we need, without any significant inflationary impact, if we focus on improving the construction industry’s productivity.” Andrew Brown (Australian Associated Press) NOVEMBER 2023 | FIND GEELONG

grains are well established to promote inflammation, as well as impair liver function, and since the liver is where cholesterol is synthesised, it’s role should not be overlooked. Choose natural sugars such as honey, coconut sugar, or natural maple syrup as an alternative, and swap white flour products for wholegrain. Often, people are often encouraged to reduce the intake of dietary cholesterol despite many studies showing that high levels saturated fats have a greater effect on cholesterol levels than dietary cholesterol itself. In general, our western diets are high in omega 6 faty acids and low in omega 3 faty acids. For this reason, fish oil has a great effect on cardiovascular risk, and blood lipids in general.
-friend or foe? NATUROPATH By Kathryn Messenger
Cholesterol plays a vital role in our bodies, serving as an essential part of our cell membranes and helping to regulate various bodily functions. It acts like a building material, providing structural integrity to cell walls and allowing them to function properly. Additionally, cholesterol is essential for the production of hormones like estrogen and testosterone, and fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D, which control various bodily processes, including growth and reproduction. So, without cholesterol, our cells would not be able to maintain their integrity, and we wouldn’t have the necessary hormones to keep our bodies functioning correctly. HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) and LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) are two types of cholesterol carriers in your bloodstream, each with distinct roles, and are seen as the following. HDL cholesterol is often called the “good” cholesterol. HDL molecules pick up excess cholesterol from the walls of your blood vessels and transport it back to your liver. There, the liver can process and remove this cholesterol from your body. This process helps prevent the buildup of cholesterol in your arteries and reduces the risk of heart disease. Conversely, LDL cholesterol has been seen as the “bad”
cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol from your liver to various cells throughout your body. Atherosclerosis is the narrowing and hardening of the arterial walls with the buildup of plaque, this can increase the risk of heart issues and cardiovascular disease. Higher levels of LDL cholesterol are found with atherosclerosis. But too often only the total cholesterol is examined in a blood test, whereas the ratio between the HDL and LDL cholesterol is much more accurate in determining disease. Another thing to note is the use of station drugs for treating high cholesterol. The ‘numbers needed to treat’ is the part of the statistics around how many people need to take the drug for just one person to see a benefit, but when you add to that the number of people that take the drug and experience side effects, the statistics get even worse. For every 10 000 people on station medication, 19 heart atacks, 9 strokes, and 8 deaths are prevented, yet 15 muscle symptoms, 8 liver events, 12 kidney events, and 14 eye conditions are developed. Fortunately, there are natural ways to improve your blood lipids and cholesterol ratio. It is interesting that even though it is well established that fibre from fruit, vegetables, legumes and wholegrains reduce cholesterol, there is very litle information promoting these foods to prevent high cholesterol. This should be the first place to start. Sugar and refined
Along with dietary fibre and oily fish, garlic, ginger and turmeric have all been shown to regulate blood lipid levels, and there are some lovely herbs such as globe artichoke and gymnema.
At Whole Naturopathy we can treat an imbalance in the HDL:LDL, and provide dietary, nutritional supplement and herbal medicine to improve your cardiovascular health.

Worker protections sooner on the cards as bill split Dominic Giannini and Andrew Brown (Australian Associated Press)
Employees with post-traumatic stress or facing domestic violence have been given new hope they could have further protection by Christmas. A slate of changes to workplace laws have been split so less contentious parts can pass immediately while the government and opposition go head to head over the rest. The omnibus legislation will close loopholes that allow companies to pay labour hire workers less, add protection for gig economy workers and allow for casuals to transition into permanent work – which are opposed by the coalition. But senators on all sides agree on provisions that would make it easier for frontline workers to access claims for post-traumatic stress disorder and improve protections for employees experiencing domestic violence. Senate crossbenchers Jacqui Lambie and David Pocock introduced their own bills with the non-contentious parts of Labor’s laws on Monday. Their bills would also bring silica dust regulation in line with measures for asbestos to better protect those at risk developing silicosis and protect employees when businesses become insolvent. The private bills – which the coalition has indicated it would support – wedges
Labor, which supports the measures but is staunchly against splitting its own bill. Employment Minister Tony Burke has pushed back against the split, saying delays to the other provisions would hold up protections and fair pay for workers. The government had never supported any of the measures being delayed, Mr Burke said. “I don’t accept that it is controversial or contentious to prevent workers from being underpaid,” he added. “Certain business groups will find every excuse to delay this legislation, they have members who pay them to keep wages low and they know this legislation will get wages moving.” The Greens would scrutinise the bills before coming to a position, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
be contentious and needed to be passed before the broader bill is debated next year, Senator Lambie said. “We would like these few really important things removed from the bill, that really assist people out there that are doing it tough’,” she told ABC TV. While the sweeping changes needed an adequate amount of time to be scrutinised, the added protections could be passed now, Senator Pocock said. The broader suite of measures has drawn criticism from business groups and the opposition who argued the changes would create uncertainty for operators and increase costs. The Master Builders Association has backed the split, saying it will give workers greater protections while the parliament has more time to debate the negative consequences the bill could have.
But the minor party would push to help boost worker wages and conditions against businesses who “screw their workers for more and more”.
The Australian Chamber of Commerce also supported splitting the bill, backing worker protections but remaining against provisions that would change laws surrounding labour hire and allowing casuals to move to full-time work.
“We will consider what’s the best way forward and what is the best way of getting a good outcome for Australian workers to make sure we close all those loopholes,” she said.
But the Australian Council of Trade Unions urged the bill be passed in its entirety, saying all the elements were important to boost wages, especially during a costof-living crisis.

I AM sculpture calls Drysdale home for 12 months Alison Marchant MP - Member for Bellarine It is incredible to have the I AM sculpture accessible to the Drysdale and wider Bellarine community; near the SpringDale Neighbourhood Centre where the idea for the artwork was created. This sculpture represents the important message of celebrating and supporting people with lived experience of disability as well as raising awareness of their experiences and contributions to our community.
The Drysdale community has welcomed the installation of the relocatable I AM sculpture to Peninsula Drive, outside the Potato Shed. The public artwork, at more than two metres tall, celebrates people who have a lived experience with disability and raises of awareness of their experiences. I AM is inspired by political and pop culture statements such as the 1968 Memphis black sanitation workers’ slogan “I AM a man”, and Helen Reddy’s 1971 anthem “I AM woman.” The statue now sits across from the newly opened North BellarineAquatic Centre just in time for summer after being craned in from Pakington Street, where it’s been located since February.
Its current location is especially important as it was at the nearby SpringDaleNeighbourhood Centre that the idea for an artwork recognising people living with a disability was dreamed up by the Geelong and Bellarine Peer Action Group from VALiD (Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability). The City commissioned Mark Cuthbertson with artist-collaborators Robert Croft, Hannah Wilkinson, Christian Den Besten and George Macaronis to develop the large-scale work, receiving more than 85 contributions from the community. I AM was delivered in partnership with VALiD and Geelong-based ArtGusto, and funded by the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund.
Mayor Trent Sullivan The public artwork will stand outside the Potato Shed over the next 12 months. I AM needs to be seen to be believed - each letter in the sculpture weighs around four tonnes and is inlaid with text-based works of the contributing community members. The statue recognises the empowerment of diversity and gives a voice to people with a lived experience of disability.
Councillor Elise Wilkinson Bellarine Ward The interactive installation had previously been installed outside Geelong West Town Hall, at the Geelong Waterfront and in Lara’s Austin Park. By being relocatable, I AM is widely accessible to the community and its message is conveyed to a bigger audience. The sculpture encourages community members to demonstrate their support for the community by being a part of the work and positioning themselves within or taking photos using the hashtag #IAMGeelong.

Annual Report insights into extensive road and footpath network The 2022-2023 Annual Report has highlighted the day-to-day work of our City Infrastructure team as it maintains more than 2,040 kilometres of sealed streets and 330+ kilometres of unsealed roads across Greater Geelong. Over the last financial year, the City repaired 6,068 sealed road potholes and resurfaced 49 kilometres of roads. Our commitment to improving active travel infrastructure saw 3.25 kilometres of new shared paths constructed and 11.8 kilometres of footpath renewed or replaced. Since 2022, the region’s bike paths increased by 31 kilometres to 115 kilometres and the length of shared paths expanded to 208 kilometres, up 27 kilometres. The City’s extensive footpath network increased 61 kilometres to 1,988 kilometres. The number of repair requests for sealed local roads increased during 202223, largely driven by severe rain and flooding events in late 2022. The weather conditions presented a number of challenges, including washing away some unsealed roads that had been rebuilt following flooding just days prior.
For more information on the management of the region’s roads and streets, or to report an issue, visit our roads and streets page. Explore the City of Greater Geelong’s 2022-23 Annual Report.
Mayor Trent Sullivan The City team managed thousands of kilometres of roads, footpaths, shared paths and bike paths from Little River to Indented Head and everywhere in between. The City is responding to the region’s rapid growth by maintaining existing and building new road and pedestrian infrastructure. It’s great to see that the overall condition of our municipality’s road network improved during the last financial year despite challenges.
Councillor Bruce Harwood - High Performing Council portfolio chair The City Infrastructure team is passionate and dedicated to serving the community. The Annual Report has given us some impressive insights into the team’s achievements, such as the renewal and replacement of 11.8 kilometres of footpath and the repair of 6,068 sealed road potholes.

Annual Report highlights environmental sustainability achievements
Three local businesses whose projects demonstrated clean technology and circular economy solutions (including home and business electrification and the use of recycled waste in construction) shared in $50,000 in Cleantech & Circular Economy Grants from the City. In Waurn Ponds, we’ve been utilising recycled red brick, tree mulch and bitumen, compost from our recycling facility, salvaged railway sleepers and rubber from old tyres to create low maintenance roundabout landscapes.
Mayor Trent Sullivan Sustainability is a key theme of Our Community Plan 2021-2025 and a strong focus of our community’s 30year Clever and Creative vision.
Madison Harper from Auto Care Ocean Grove, Mayor Trent Sullivan, Karen Weaver from 100% Clean Bellarine and Damien George from Auto Care Ocean Grove.
The City replaced 14,000 residential streetlights and 1,300 main road streetlights with energy efficient LED lights in the last financial year, as part of one of the largest upgrade programs of its kind in Victoria. The conversion project, which will see the LED luminaires used in all of the municipality’s 25,000-plus streetlights and save more than 8,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, is just one of the achievements showcased in the City’s 2022-2023 AnnualReport. The organisation’s operational carbon emissions dropped 29 percent and our electricity usage generates zero emissions after signing a 10-year contract to source renewable energy. Another 12 new electric vehicles were also added to the City’s fleet. A total of 10,214 mattresses were collected, with all recyclable materials directed to recycling businesses. The City offers residential properties two mattress and two hard waste collections each financial year. We supplied 240 tonnes of high-quality compost to community gardens and not-for-profits and held two community compost giveaway days for residents to
collect free samples. The compost was made from the contents of green waste bins and processed at our very own Anakie Organics Processing Facility. Another initiative aimed at avoiding and reducing waste was a relaunch of our popular Modern Cloth Reusable Nappies Subsidy Program in partnership with Cloth and Crown, offering subsidised re-useable nappy packs. The sculptural Dell Eco Reef was installed at Clifton Springs featuring 46 innovative 3D printed reef modules, to assist in reducing erosion and future impacts of sea level rise while providing a visitor attraction. We implemented all phase one projects for Sparrovale-Ngubitj yoorree Wetlands including major drainage infrastructure works, pest control and protection of threatened flora and fauna. The 500-hectare nature reserve in Charlemont is home to a diverse range of wildlife and section one opened this financial year to the public. Efforts to increase the region’s tree canopy included planting 3,016 street and park trees and 4,000 tubestock, while our team assessed 475 Environmentally Sustainable Development planning applications.
Council and the City’s ongoing commitment towards improving environmental sustainability is in response to community feedback and need, and we are excited to keep making important strides in this space. By supporting the needs of our natural environment, taking climate action and reducing emissions and waste, we are creating a healthier, resilient and more attractive region for our community. Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken The City was building on the achievements in environmental sustainability this financial year and aligning programs and initiatives with social and economic growth. We are passionate about supporting businesses and community groups with grants, increasing the circular economy, finding innovative solutions and reducing our impact on the environment. I encourage community members to look over our Annual Report to get insights into the varied work staff do on a day-to-day basis to serve the community and how we are performing against the annual budget.

Geelong Youth join forces for Respect Cup
Year 9 school students from across The City of Greater Geelong have joined forces with young people from Colac Otway and Surf Coast Shires to say ‘no’ to gender-based violence by participating in the Barwon Respect Cup. The Barwon Respect Cup is a community based respectful relationship program which aims to inform young people of the drivers of gender-based violence so they can make informed choices to challenge those drivers in their relationships to move towards a safe and equal future. The event was led by The City of Greater Geelong and Netball Victoria alongside community partners Barwon Community
Legal Services, the Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre and the Department of Education (Respectful Relationships). A series of fun, physical activities were followed by a series of interactive respectful relationship workshops. The workshops saw students explore topics such as gender stereotypes, coercive control and other types of relationship violence, consent, personal boundaries as part of a healthy relationship and safe bystander interventions. Students gathered on the Kardinia Park netball courts for the afternoon session,
participating in a round robin netball competition. The school with the most points at the end of the day - earned through showing respect in the workshops and on the court, as well as through winning netball games - would be awarded the Respect Cup. Following four closely fought netball rounds, played, at times through heavy rainfall, Western Heights College come out on top after winning all their games and showing a high level of respect towards each other, opponents, umpires and facilitators throughout the day.
Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan The City is delighted to join forces with Netball Victoria in providing the experience. The workshops equipped the students with some valuable knowledge and experiences, while the netball competition provided an enjoyable physical outlet for an active age group. Respect is at the core of all healthy relationships, so I’m delighted that this has developed as a priority for our younger secondary school-aged students. The lessons learnt are important ones that I hope the students retain moving into adulthood as responsible and caring members of the community. Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken I congratulate Western Heights College on its success. Western Heights College students not only revealed their talents in the sporting challenges but went about the whole day in a respectful and caring manner. I applaud them for what they’ve achieved but I’m sure the judges’ task was made very challenging by the enthusiasm and responsiveness of all participants. It was terrific that the City of Greater Geelong could support so many students coming from as far south as Surf Coast and Colac Otway Shires.

DISCOVER GEELONG’S EMERGING FILM INDUSTRY: A CLOSER LOOK AT GEELONG WATERFRONT FILM FOUNDATION Geelong, a city steeped in cultural heritage, is carving out a niche in Australia’s thriving film industry. Over recent decades, this picturesque region has become a hotspot for creatives, production houses, and actors, culminating in a burgeoning film and screen industry. Leading this charge is the Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation, positioning the city on the brink of cinematic prominence. Geelong’s expansive landscapes, from urban backdrops to idyllic coastlines, have set the stage for numerous acclaimed films, including “Mad Max,” “The Dressmaker, “and “Ghost Rider.” The city’s rich cinematic history and promising future have been championed by the Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation, an initiative operated by a dedicated group of volunteers from local businesses and the film industry. This venture is not just about artistic expression; it’s an economic driver. For every million dollars invested in a film production in the region, there’s an estimated multiplier effect, generating approximately $3.5 million in economic activity within the community. Beyond the numbers, the film industry has the power to enrich the cultural and social fabric of the community. It serves as a platform for local talent to showcase their skills, shed light on the region’s history, culture, and landscapes, and fuel appreciation and preservation of these unique assets.
Filming at Barwon Mansion
The Foundation’s goal is unequivocal: it aspires to create an environment conducive to a sustainable local film, TV, and screen content creation industry. The brainchild behind this foundation is Geelong accountant, Patrick Rowan. Producers who ventured into the region often grappled with securing the final stages of production financing. With the Foundation’s establishment, investors can now make tax-deductible contributions, which are subsequently granted in screen creators working in the region. Several grants have already been issued for filming in the region. Guiding the Foundation is an accomplished volunteer board comprising Michael Stangel (Chair), Belinda Lyle (Executive Director), Patrick Rowan, Ryan Chamley, Chris Bryan, and Gavan O’Connor. One of the Foundation’s notable accomplishments is the evolving database, providing content creators with the means to connect with the right talent and expertise for their projects. This database opens doors for filmmakers, directors, sound engineers, lighting specialists, animators, actors and others servicing the industry to collaborate and explore opportunities.
donations, with every contribution, no matter how modest, deeply appreciated. Geelong, already a region teeming with creativity and artistry, is now on the brink of an artistic revolution, supported by a passionate community. The potential of Geelong’s film and screen industry knows no bounds, and the Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation stands as a testament to the community’s dedication to shaping Geelong’s cinematic destiny. The Foundation envisions a grand future, aiming to eventually host the Geelong Waterfront Film Festival, a platform similar to Cannes and Sundance, drawing international attention and spotlighting local talents. However, this ambitious vision hinges on both long-term planning and funding. Despite these challenges, the Foundation is unwavering in its commitment to working towards this goal.

Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation is rejuvenating the spirit of guerrilla filmmaking in the Geelong region with a Forty-8 hour Film Frenzy. Filmmakers from across Australia will descend on Geelong for a single weekend in 2024 to create short, 10-minute films based on specific criteria. School students, young people under 25 and adults alike will work together in teams in the lead-up to the weekend to write a story and find a cast and crew who can shoot and edit their short film in just a single weekend. If you’re an actor, an aspiring filmmaker, or a content creator, or maybe you’re just a film buff, you can join this exciting movement, with several avenues available: -Register for the industry database, with an annual cost of $20 for easy visibility on the website - Attend regular Meet Ups offering valuable networking opportunities - Interested parties can become a “Friend of Geelong Waterfront Film” for an annual fee of $20, keeping up-to-date with the latest developments. Dealing with Anxiety Anxiety has always been an issue but it seems as if it has become a bigger issue over recent years. Most of us have had to deal with it to some degree. Anxiety comes in a range of forms. In its mildest state it may present as a minor concern or a small worry. In its most severe state it could present as a debilitating phobia. In between are all the varying degrees, often put in the one basket labelled, ‘Anxiety’. It’s very helpful to recognise that anxiety (or fear) is a normal emotion. We all feel a certain amount of it in the face of life’s challenges. In many instances it is a very helpful reaction. For example, it’s right to be fearful when standing on the edge of a cliff. Similarly, when we encounter new challenges, it’s necessary that we have a heightened level of awareness, our antennas go up and we know we need to be working harder, giving a new task our full attention. It’s good to be nervous at times – a healthy response in certain situations. I have very fond memories of some special needs secondary students that I was working with, some years ago, very proudly declaring, after they had successfully gone up 55 storeys of the Rialto Towers, walked around the Observation Deck and then returned safely back down, ‘Rob! We faced our fears. We did it!’ Most cases of Anxiety come into a similar category. We need to face them. We may need help. Someone to talk things through with. Someone to walk with us. Some new strategies or skills learned. Some education – a course of sorts. Occasionally we may need some professional help from a counsellor or psychologist. I was reassured recently to hear some high-powered business leaders testifying to this very thing. They described the anxiety and stress they experience when confronted with new challenges. For our children, nine times out of ten they simply need some patient talking through of the experience that faces them. They need to express their thoughts, concerns or issues. They may need some empathy, understanding, encouragement, logical thoughts, reassurance, a realignment to the positives, expelling of the lies and the doubts and the truth restated: ‘You can do this.’ ‘It’s okay to feel nervous.’ ‘You’re good!’ ‘I love you.’ ‘You don’t have to get it right first time.’ ‘It’s okay to make mistakes.’ ‘I believe in you.’ ‘I’m proud of you.’ Kindest regards, Rob. Geelong School of Botanical Art managed by Friends of Geelong Botanic Gardens INSPIRED BY NATURE 8 EXHIBITION The Geelong School of Botanical Art, Inspired by Nature 8 Exhibition, will delight visitors to a spectacular blossoming of creativity, that embraces established and new talent. This is evident by the beautifully portrayed subjects, the narratives depicted within the artworks, the consideration of composition, the diversity of media and attention to detail is on display. Botanical Art visually records and promotes the appreciation, conservation, protection and nurture of plants and natural habitats of plant life – and where best to source a diversity of plant species that accurately names and records its place of origin; none other than a Botanic Garden. The Geelong Botanic Gardens has a diversity of plants, of which, many are rare and heritage listed. The Geelong School of Botanical Art resides within the gardens which enables the artists to visually capture and importantly, document plants of the gardens, attested by many of the artworks on display at the exhibition. In the future, the botanical artists’ role in the documentation of rare and critically endangered species of plants will become even more crucial in light of the warnings of our fast-changing climate. Amanda Ahmed, Amanda Blake Sutterby, Craig Lidgerwood and John Pastoriza-Piñol are the schools’ current tutors; all are nationally and internationally renowned and their artwork and can be found in art collections and florilegiums in Australia and worldwide. Through their generous imparting of expertise and knowledge of ‘all things botanical art’, the school has become one of excellence in its field and the students’ exceptional artworks at the exhibition is testament to this. The Biannual Inspired by Nature 8 Exhibition is from 4 November to 9 December 2023 at the Deakin University Waterfront Campus, Waterfront Gallery, Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial Library. Christmas and School Holidays Best wishes for Christmas and the holiday season. Trust it’s a good one. Here’s a few thoughts for families as we tackle the six weeks of school holidays. The summer school holidays are a great opportunity to do some special things with our children that we often don’t get the chance to do at other times of the year. Traditionally it’s a time to get away and have a holiday but I know that doesn’t work for everyone. It's been affectionately stated that children spell love, T-I-M-E. Children seem to demand all our time, resources and more. And it’s exhausting! But the dividends are marvellous. Rich and rewarding experiences involve interaction, sharing and talking – opportunities to laugh and connect with other family members. Some suggestions for having a rich school holidays – see how many you can do:

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB
In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.
BOWLS
In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation. You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.
GOLF
There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club. Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.
RACQUET
FC LEOPOLD FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop. The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop. We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town. FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions. FC Leopold are looking for enthusiastic members of the community who would like to contribute to the clubs ethos and family friendly feel - whether that is through being a committee member, volunteer, coach or player. JUNIOR AND MINIROOS WIND UP 18 teams, 22 coaches and a whole lot of fun Thanks to all of those involved in FC Leopold Juniors and Miniroos this 2023 season. Our biggest one to date! We were pretty worried after the pandemic cancelled season of how we would be able to build numbers up again - but I think we can honestly say that we have gone from strength to strength since then. It takes a tribe to run a massive growth year like we just had. So I’d like to give a massive shout out to the coaches, the committee, the junior sub committee and also a special thanks to Aaron Browne, Simone Melbourne, Tamara Allan and Rick Scade who all supported the season in ways that went above and beyond the scope of their volunteer roles. Massive thank you to all of the families that have made the season a pleasure to be a part of. We look forward to next season being bigger and brighter again. Lots of behind the scenes planning going on now (well soon after some well earned weekend time). And also keep a look out for our upcoming AGM. For our returning families please have a wonderful and safe break and to those going onto different things next year we wish you all the best.

Geelong’s History with Top Ten Draft Picks The Cats have quietly been one of the most successful teams at the AFL draft since its inception, building and maintaining a strong list that has helped them remain competitive over the past two decades. Despite their well renowned success during the trade period, Geelong has also found a number of champion players in the draft anywhere from their top picks to later selections. The Cats enter the 2023 draft with pick eight as their first selection, just their 15th pick inside the top ten since the National draft was introduced back in 1986. The most notable period of top ten selections for Geelong came in a golden era from 1999 to 2006, which helped to establish a dynasty that led to four premierships coming home to Kardinia Park. The first was in the 1999 draft, with the Cats selecting tough nut Joel Corey from East Perth with pick eight. Corey went on to feature across 14 seasons and 276 games with Geelong, playing a vital role through the midfield in the three premierships between 2007 and 2011. The tough Cat also won two Carji Greeves medals during his time at the club, while earning a pair of All-Australian selections in 2007 and 2008.
The next top ten selection came two years later when the Cats used another eighth pick to draft Jimmy Bartel from the Geelong Falcons. Bartel built a legacy as one of the greatest players to don the blue and white hoops, winning the 2007 Brownlow and the 2011 Norm Smith Medal while becoming a three time premiership player. The superstar played 305 games for Geelong, earning two All-Australian selections while maintaining his status as one of the competition’s top on-ballers for the majority of his career. Geelong used pick seven in the 2002 draft to select Andrew Mackie from Glenelg, their third consecutive top ten pick that turned into a club champion. Mackie played 280 games for the Cats becoming another vital part of the three premierships from 2007 to 2011, while also earning All-Australian honours during his career. After a few years out of the top ten, Geelong made perhaps their greatest selection of all when they drafted Joel Selwood from the Bendigo Pioneers with pick seven in 2006.
Selwood’s legacy speaks for itself; Club games record holder, longest serving captain in AFL history, four time premiership player, six All-Australian selections and three Carji Greeves Medals sit amongst a host of other accolades across his 355 game career. Incredibly it was a draft steal for the Cats in 2006, with Selwood sliding to pick seven because other teams held concerns around the durability of his knee. Fast forward to 2022 and the Cats found themselves with just their second top ten pick in the last 16 years, selecting talented young gun Jhye Clark with pick eight. Scratching the surface in 2023, Clark showed plenty of his potential through the VFL and during his AFL debut, with an exciting career awaiting the young Cat. Geelong will enter this year with their second consecutive top ten pick, the first time this has occurred in 20 years dating back to the 2002 and 2003 drafts.

“THE WORLD’S BEST”: WHATELEY AND LALOR REFLECT AS LANNING CALLS TIME ON INTERNATIONAL CAREER
Australian captain Meg Lanning has announced her retirement from international cricket. The 31-year-old steps away from national duties as one of the sport’s most successful leaders as a five-time World Cup winning captain and seven-time winner. Lanning finished her Australian career with 8,352 runs from a huge 241 international matches where she notched 17 scores of triple figures. The retirement bombshell was broken by The Australian’s Peter Lalor and the journalist says that the superstar batter simply ran out of petrol as she’s been playing international cricket for 13 years. “Meg Lanning, what a huge figure in Australian women’s cricket, perhaps our most successful female cricketer,” Lalor said on SEN Whateley. “Seven World Cups, she’s been captain since she was 2014 and she’s just run out of petrol. I think we’ve suspected this for some time. “Meg has had a couple of extended breaks from the game and my reading on it is she’s looked ahead, there’s a tour of India coming up, there’s a Test match, there’s ODIs and T20s. She doesn’t have it in her to go. “That’s the end of a fantastic career.”
Lanning took two periods of personal leave in recent years and Lalor believes that was the writing on the wall that she was nearing the end of her time in green and gold.
After making her debut as a teenager, Gerard Whateley says Lanning was crucial in Australia’s sustained period of dominance with the Victorian in the side.
The batter will continue playing domestic cricket and Lalor thinks she’ll be happy to continue playing away from the limelight in the WBBL with the Melbourne Stars and for Victoria.
Having won everything there was to win in women’s cricket, Whateley says Lanning has completed her version of the grand slam in the sport.
“She hasn’t played for Australia since they won the World Cup,” Lalor said. “She has been playing in the WBBL. She’s going on in domestic cricket and not international cricket so she’s not tired of that. “Meg Lanning’s never been a sort of spotlight person, has she? She’s been the most unassuming of leaders. “She was an incredibly reliable cricketer in well over 100 T20 matches and 103 ODI matches. She scored some fantastic centuries for her country. “But she’s not very fond of the limelight. She’s never very fond of the centre stage. “I think she’d be happy just to go back and play her cricket off-Broadway and not have that sort of intensity on her. “That’s a reflection of her character. There’s a little bit of a sort of that Allan Border, Steve Waugh, style of leadership about Meg.”
“She was a teenager playing for Australia and rapidly becomes the world’s best, she was captain at 21,” Whateley said. “Then there was this phenomenal period of success which is unrivalled really. “Australia forged ahead with the professionalism of the game, and it all happened on her watch. “They win T20 World Cups, they win the Commonwealth Games gold medal, they win the 50-over World Cup. “She does what is the grand slam of women’s cricket.” Lanning retires with the third-highest batting average of any women’s cricketer in ODIs with a minimum of 20 innings. She scored 4602 runs in the format at an average of 53.51. Pete Lalor on Meg Lanning’s Retirement

“ABSOLUTE GIFT”: WATLING DECLARES BET OF THE FLEMINGTON CARNIVAL
Dean Watling has declared Imperatriz as one of the better bets of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The last start Manikato winner is the current $2 favourite in the Darley Champions Sprint and will race down the Fleminggton for the first time. Looming as one of the best races in the carnival, Imperatriz will face tough opposition in In Secret and Bella Nipotina. But Watling is expecting the Te Akau Racing mare to continue her dominance in the Australian sprinting ranks. “The more and more I do this race, the drift out to $2 just looks an absolute gift for Imperatriz,” Watling said. “I know she hasn’t been down the straight, but you look at her pattern and it suits the pattern of all good horses down the straight. “She’s going to get to the best part of the track which is the outside fence which we know on the last day is the best place to be. “I think she’ll hold her form and she wins this race very, very easily,” he said. “I can’t wait to see her and at $2 is one of the better bets of the carnival.” Imperatriz will be ridden by New Zealand hoop Opie Bosson and will jump from barrier eight.

BROWNLOW MEDALLIST CERTAIN DAICOS WILL RETIRE AS THE GAME’S ALL-TIME HIGHEST-PAID PLAYER Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy is sure that Nick Daicos will be the highest-paid player in the history of the game when he retires. Daicos is two years into his AFL career and has already asserted himself as one of the competition’s elite. He won a premiership in 2023 to go with a thirdplace finish in the Brownlow Medal despite missing the last month of the season with injury. The Collingwood gun’s status as perhaps the AFL’s best player already at age 20 earned him a new contract despite him being previously tied to the Magpies until the end of the 2025 season. Daicos is now contracted until the end of 2029 on a big-money deal where he’ll enter restricted free agency. The young Pie has been tipped to be the game’s highest-paid player once he reaches free agency and given that he’ll already be a top earner in his third season, Healy expects him to break cumulative earning records by the time he retires. He discussed Daicos’ earning potential with Kane Cornes on SEN Sportsday.

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards. This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services: Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards. There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jampacked with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer. The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net. The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features. A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong. The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars. The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk. Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve. Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas. The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground. The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wide-open spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy! Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water. Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views. Should you pay a RAD or a DAP when entering Aged Care? By Warren Strybosch
When entering residential aged care in Australia, you typically have the option to pay for your accommodation through a Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) or a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP). The choice between the two payment methods depends on your financial situation and preferences. Here’s a brief overview of each option: 1. • •
•
•
•
2.
Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD): The RAD is a lump sum payment made to the aged care facility. It is a refundable deposit, which means that when you leave the facility (e.g., if you pass away or no longer need residential care), the RAD is refunded to you or your estate. The amount of the RAD is agreed upon between you and the aged care provider and can vary significantly depending on the facility, its location, and the quality of accommodation. The RAD doesn’t affect your ongoing aged care fees, which are determined based on your income and assets. Interest on the RAD is paid to you or deducted from your daily care fees. The interest rate is determined by the government. Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP):
• •
•
•
The DAP is an ongoing daily payment for your accommodation. It is calculated as a proportion of the RAD (e.g., the equivalent of the RAD divided by 365 days) and is paid on a daily basis. The DAP is not refundable; it is an ongoing expense for as long as you reside in the aged care facility. Like the RAD, the amount of the DAP can vary based on the facility and the agreed-upon RAD.
The choice between paying a RAD or a DAP often depends on your financial circumstances and preferences. Some factors to consider when making this decision include: •
•
•
•
Your financial resources: If you have the financial means to pay a lump sum RAD without impacting your quality of life or financial security, this option may be suitable for you. Cash flow: If you prefer to keep your money invested and maintain your cash flow, a DAP may be more appropriate, as it spreads the cost over time. Estate planning: If you want to preserve your assets for your estate or beneficiaries, a RAD may be the better choice because it is refundable upon departure. Negotiation with the facility: You can negotiate the RAD amount with the
aged care provider, so it’s advisable to discuss your options with them and consider your financial situation carefully. However, one must be careful if they agree to pay a RAD and then don’t have the funds. You have 30 days from entering aged care accommodation to decide how you want to make your payment. If you choose to pay a lump sum (the RAD) you then have 6 months to pay the money to your provider. If after the 6-month period, you cannot afford to pay the RAD, the provider can either proceed to sue you for not meeting your contractual obligations or they can remove your loved ones from the premises for non-payment. It is better to agree to pay the DAP even if you believe you have enough funds to pay the RAD. Whilst paying the DAP, at any time you can make contributions to the RAD, which will then reduce the DAP payments. Regardless, of which decision you make, it is essential to consult with a financial advisor to determine the best payment option for your specific circumstances. Additionally, you should understand how your choice will impact your aged care fees and your overall financial situation, including any government benefits or subsidies you may be eligible for.
