About the Find Maroondah By Warren Strybosch

The Find Maroondah is a community paper that aims to support all things Maroondah. We want to provide a place where all Not-For-Profits (NFP), schools, sporting groups and other like organisations can share their news in one place. For instance, submitting up-andcoming events in the Find Maroondah for Free. We do not proclaim to be another newspaper and we will not be aiming to compete with other news outlets. You can obtain your news from other sources. We feel you get enough of this already. We will keep our news topics to a minimum and only provide what we feel is most relevant topics to you each month. We invite local council and the current council members to participate by submitting information each month so as to keep us informed of any changes that may be of relevance to us, their local constituents.

We will also try and showcase different organisations throughout the year so you, the reader, can learn more about what is on offer in your local area. To help support the paper, we invite local business owners to sponsor the paper and in return we will provide exclusive advertising and opportunities to submit articles about their businesses. As a community we encourage you to support these businesses/columnists. Without their support, we would not be able to provide this community paper to you.

ALL THINGS MAROONDAH The City of Maroondah is a local government area in Victoria, Australia in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Maroondah had a population of approximately 118,000 as at the 2019 Report which includes 9000 business and close to 46,000 households. The City of Maroondah was created through the amalgation the former Cities of Ringwood and Croydon in December 1994.

Christmas Day and Holidays

By Warren Strybosch The Magic of Christmas and the Joy of Holidays The Christmas season is upon us once again. For many it is a time of joy, togetherness, and reflection for people around the world. At the heart of it all is Christmas Day, a holiday that holds a special place in the hearts of many. While Christmas is perhaps the most widely celebrated, it's just one of several holidays that make up the festive holiday season. Christmas Day: Celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christmas Day, celebrated on December 25th, is a significant Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. It's a time when Christians come together to reflect on the story of the Nativity, the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, as recounted in the Bible. This day holds deep religious meaning for Christians and is often observed with church services, nativity scenes, and carol singing.

For many, Christmas is about much more than its religious origins. It's a time of giving, love, and sharing. Families and friends come together to exchange gifts and express their affection for one another. The tradition of decorating Christmas trees with ornaments and lights, along with the anticipation of Santa Claus's arrival, brings a sense of wonder and excitement, especially among children. Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas in some regions, is a beloved figure associated with Christmas. He is said to travel the world on Christmas Eve, delivering gifts to well-behaved children. The story of Santa Claus, with his iconic red suit and reindeer-drawn sleigh, adds a touch of enchantment to the holiday season. The holiday season is a time of reflection, gratitude, and the joy of spending quality time with loved ones. It's a time when cultures from around the world come together to celebrate the values of love, kindness, and generosity. No matter which holiday one observes during this special time of year, the

message of unity and goodwill remains a constant, making the holiday season a truly magical and heartwarming time. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other holiday, the spirit of togetherness and goodwill is what truly defines this festive time of year. Unfortunately, Christmas is not always a joyous time for everyone. For some people, it may bring back memories of loved ones lost, friendships that have moved on, and families that no longer meet. For those of you who find this time of year a struggle, we want to reach out to you and hope you can find some solace at this time of year. We hope new relationships will form and friendships forged; that you find laughter, a smile that you can return even if underneath you are dealing with some form of pain or sadness. How to find peace within PARENTING By Lesley-Anne Banton The saying of peace and goodwill to all is bandied around at this time of the year, it suggests it’s something you have to do and give to others. What if this year you give it to yourself? At this time of year attention is often brought to who we don’t have in our lives, family disconnects and disputes and lack of what we don’t have. It can raise so many unhelpful thoughts, behaviour patterns and feelings. Sometimes we feel forced, obligated or guilted into spending time with people whom we may not get along with, feel trigged by or don’t align with. This maybe family and or close friends but mainly seems to be family members and we just don’t know how to navigate it. The situation or the anticipation of the event can evoke frustration, anger, anxiety and resentment, but not inviting them and including them in family gatherings gives you feelings of guilt, obligation, selfishness and or shame. What can you do? Without diving too deep, take a step back for a moment and look at your family patterns, dynamics, conditioning and rules. Who did you need to be to fit in and be accepted? Who did

your sibling need to be to fit in and be accepted? What roles did you take on? What were your generational family patterns and dynamics? Now just because you can recognise and see where the behaviour, conditioning, roles and patterns come from, this does not diminish what you have experienced. However it does help to give reason to it. Next, look at what part you have played in creating and continuing the behaviour pattern you are apart of with the person. We have responsibility in our part- if you deny this from yourself you disempower yourself with the ability to change the dynamic and set and protect your boundaries, so be honest - what was/ is your part? By owning and accepting your part and committing to create change you can and you will. By finger pointing and blaming you can guarantee there will be no change within you. Labels given to family members as an outcome of your birth does not make you obligated to them or accountable for their thoughts, feelings, actions or inactions. You do not need to seek their approval or acceptance of who you are, your true self at the core. If you removed their title (Mum, Dad, brother, cousin, Aunt) would you still have them in your life? What boundaries would you set? Who do you now get to become? By taking away the labels and expectations you can see the person more clearly, you can see yourself more

clearly.You can humanise the experience and perception of events to allow empathy to yourself and, possibly, to them. By dancing through these steps, you get to observe what comes up and comes to mind, it can help you see things from a different perspective. You now get to give the story you are telling yourself another meaning, a more helpful and empowering meaning. It helps you to detach yourself from an old unhelpful story you were telling yourself, it helps you to see the multigenerational unhelpful and sometimes dysfunctional family patterns and dynamics. You now get to express empathy, compassion and forgiveness to yourself for all you have experienced, for all the disempowering beliefs, thoughts, behaviours and patterns. For all the internal shame and guilt, you have put on yourself, you get to forgive and learn to love yourself more. You get to unearth your inner peace. Your inner peace is your gift to you, the gift of accepting where you are now with the wisdom of your strengths and resources that your experiences gave you. You give yourself the ability to relax and enjoy this time of year on your terms.

Record $2.1 million fine over apprentice's

As a business owner and employer, it is your responsibility to ensure the health and safety of your employees within your workplace. This includes providing your team with a safe work environment and protection from hazards. You can achieve this by understanding your obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws and by complying with them. WorkSafe Victoria recently reported that an industrial component manufacturer and its director have been convicted and fined a total of $2.24 million and the director placed on a five year Community Corrections Order after an apprentice was seriously injured in Gippsland.

and that it was reasonably practicable to ensure that covers were fixed to the lathe to prevent pipes that protruded from being threaded, or that a fixed steady was used to support such pipes and an exclusion zone used to restrict access to the danger area near the pipe. WorkSafe Executive Director of Health and Safety Narelle Beer said overhanging work pieces were a wellknown safety risk when using lathes. "It is incredibly frustrating that this employer had several control measures to eliminate or reduce the risk available but simply chose not to use them," Dr Beer said. "The significant penalties for this company and director reflect the lifealtering impact this devastating incident has had on a vulnerable apprentice who was at the very start of his career."

Dennis Jones Engineering Pty Ltd and sole director Dennis Jones were sentenced in the Melbourne County Court yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to a single charge each under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The company was convicted and fined a record $2.1 million for recklessly engaging in conduct that placed a person in danger of serious injury.

In October 2021, Jones directed the 20-year-old apprentice to use a plastic sleeve to steady lengths of steel pipe that he was threading on a lathe at the company's Morwell workshop. The apprentice was holding the plastic sleeve on the end of a pipe that protruded nearly 1.5 metres from the rear spindle of the lathe and was struck when the pipe bent and whipped. He was placed in an induced coma, airlifted to hospital and underwent surgery for serious head injuries. A WorkSafe investigation found Jones should have been aware of the risk

Anticipating your baby’s first Christmas is really special and everyone loves it when there’s a new baby in the family at Christmas time. However, we know that the lead up to the season can leave mothers and their little ones feeling tired and frazzled. Preparing for Christmas always makes life extra busy and it can take a lot out of you both physically and emotionally. For most families it involves planning and organising gatherings with family and loved ones, which often involves travel. There can be increased pressure on finances, the weariness of battling crowded shopping centres, not to mention extra cooking and cleaning as we prepare for the festivities. For mothers and babies, this can be a recipe for “Christmas colic”. In other words, an unhappy, difficult to settle baby. In order to set yourself up for a happy Christmas Day, consider the following tips: 1.

Work out where your baby is going to sleep on Christmas Day. If you’re planning to spend time in someone else’s home on Christmas day, it will pay dividends to have a good preemptive think about where your baby will take their naps. Whilst there may be a house full of willing relatives prepared to nurse, rock and cuddle your baby non-stop, this will only work for so long. Eventually your little angel will become overstimulated and exhausted from all that handling and at some point you will have to extract your baby from granny's arms and find a suitable sleeping place. Ideally you’ll need the use of a quiet room, away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas festivities, with either a bed for you to both lay down on, or a cot of some description (porta-cots can be great option and tend to work better than a pram in scenarios like this.) Alternatively, a baby carrier may be the very best thing. 2. Have Christmas at your house In the end, it may just be the best decision to have everyone come to your house for Christmas. After all you’re the one with the new baby. The benefit is that your baby can nap in their normal sleeping environment and you don’t have to lug all of that extra gear with you and set it up in someone else’s house, when all you really want to do is relax and enjoy the gathering. That doesn’t mean that you do all the cooking either! Make sure to delegate when it comes to who’s bringing what food and accept all offers

of help. Especially help with washing dishes and cleaning up afterwards. 3. Consider alternate times to gather Meeting for breakfast or brunch may be a more suitable time for you and your baby. See if your family can be flexible and depart from traditional lunch or dinner this year. Babies are usually more rested and happier in the morning which can make everyone’s day more enjoyable. 4. Have realistic expectations Chances are your baby’s first Christmas may not go exactly as you hope it will. Your own stress levels will probably be running higher, you may be extra tired, your baby may not have slept the night before, and you may have a long car trip before you get there. Expect your baby to find the day tiring and expect to find it tiring yourself. Then, if things don’t go quite to plan, you can be kind to yourself and willingly let go of the expectations that you may have had for the day. Be prepared to leave early if you need to. Parenting is not picture-perfect. It’s hard work and it’s messy at times and that’s okay. Next Christmas your baby won’t be a baby anymore! 5. Prioritise baby’s feeds Be mindful about noticing your baby’s earliest hunger cues, and try to respond to them promptly. Don’t delay. When there’s lots of people handling the baby, or your busy doing other things, its easy to miss their early, more subtle cues. However, its best not to wait til your baby is upset before feeding them. This will only make things more difficult in the end. Enjoy yourself but go easy on the alcohol and plum pudding If you’re breastfeeding, just be mindful that what you consume, your baby does too. A lot of rich food or unaccustomed food can lead to fussiness later on. Better to not indulge in too much that varies greatly from your usual food choices.

And if you are planning to consume alcohol, you need to do so carefully around the timing of your feeds. It takes approximately 2 hours for a standard drink to leave your bloodstream and your breastmilk. That means you should not breastfeed your baby within two hours of consuming alcohol. The best time to have an alcoholic drink is just after feeding your baby so that you have as much time as possible for your body to break down the alcohol before your baby needs to feed again. It’s a really good idea to consider expressing a feed and taking it with you so that you don’t get caught out. Any milk you express whilst you have alcohol in your bloodstream is not safe for your baby and will need to be thrown away. Download the FeedSafe app by the Australian Breastfeeding Association, to help you calculate how long after consuming alcohol you can safely breastfeed again. If in the end everything goes to pieces and you end up with an over-tired baby who hasn’t slept or fed well all day, just remember you can start again tomorrow. Plan a quiet day at home for the following day. Appreciate the time you’ve had with your loved ones and for the gift of your new baby and take some photos to remind yourself of your baby’s first Christmas. You’ll be glad for the memories in years to come.

Corporate Insolvency; Or, The death trap of debt and bad luck spiralling out of control! LEGAL By Dean Bosman

Often it can feel like the mountain of debt for the business is inescapable, and it burns through your mind day in and day out, trying to get on top of the debt, whilst still needing suppliers to give you material for your business. Often it can be one or two major clients having gone into liquidation that leaves you overextended and unable to make ends meet. There are a lot of issues to consider of course, and there are no simple answers, however there are some options that can take the pressure off, and in some cases remove it altogether. The simplest and most effective options are Small Business Re-Structuring, Safe Harbour Protections, and Liquidation, sale and purchase through a new entity. These are great options, but with a number of caveats. Small Business Re-structure For smaller enterprises, the Small Business Restructuring (SBR) process provides an alternative to traditional insolvency procedures. The SBR process aims to streamline the restructuring of small businesses, making it more cost-effective and less time-consuming. Under this scheme, eligible small businesses can develop and propose a restructuring plan to creditors, allowing them to continue trading while addressing their financial challenges. The director stays in control, and the forensic accountant (a registered liquidator) provides suggestions and advice about how to manage the debt, how to streamline the business, for example outsourcing things that can be done faster and better by specialists, but mainly dealing with your creditors and making a deal with them. Many creditors will take a lesser amount on the basis that there will be ongoing trade for them. In order to qualify for SBR, you need to have a maximum of $1M in debt, your tax returns and BAS’s up to date, and employee entitlements (read Superannuation) up to date. You will need to engage a registered liquidator. Safe Harbour Provisions Recognizing the challenges faced by directors in distressed companies, the

government has introduced safe harbour provisions. These provisions provide directors with a degree of protection from personal liability for insolvent trading if they take prompt and reasonable steps to develop a course of action that is likely to lead to a better outcome for the company and its creditors. To avail yourself of safe harbour protections, directors must be able to demonstrate that they have acted in good faith and with due diligence to prevent the company from trading while insolvent. This may involve seeking professional advice, developing a restructuring plan, or taking other measures to improve the company's financial position. By doing so, directors can shield themselves from personal liability and contribute to the preservation of the company's value. Again, you will need a registered liquidator to assist.

Creation of New Corporation, Sale of Business to the new Corporation, then Liquidation of the old, indebted Corporation First of all, this is not a Phoenix Operation. A Phoenix Operation is where the old corporation transfers its assets, accounts, funds, stock in trade etc to a new entity, and then carries on trading, avoiding the old company’s debts. It will often involve de-registering the old corporation. This is unlawful, and quite simply a foolish way to try and resolve things. There are two ways you can go about this: 1.

Engage a registered business valuer to provide a formal valuation on the business, and then purchase the business from the old corporation with a new corporation. Do not use funds from the old corporation for

the purpose, or the new corporation will be owned by the old one. The transaction must be an ‘arms length’ transaction, which means the funds must come from elsewhere – it can be a loan to the new entity, you may have savings that have accrued from drawing your salary from the old corporation, as long as you have paid PAYG tax, you can pay yourself with franked dividends (ask me about this if you’re unsure, as it’s an entire article on its own). As long as the source of the funds does not come back to the old corporation. You will need to have formal business sale contract to ensure everything is done legitimately, and the contract will list all the assets, stock etc that are being transferred, so there is a clear path in which the assets are transferred as part of the transaction. You can then appoint a liquidator to the company, though the funds for the purchase must stay with the old entity. Those funds can be used to pay the liquidators fees, and any balance will be spread among the creditors of the old corporation (usually for a small percentage of the debts owed). The liquidator will review the transaction to make sure it is not an ‘uncommercial transaction’ – for instance if the valuer says the business is worth $50,000, but you only pay $30,000, the liquidator will come after the new entity for the

$20,000 difference. Also be aware that if you have given personal guarantees for debts, this process will not avoid the guarantees, and the creditors with guarantees will still come after you personally. 2.

Engage a liquidator for the old entity, then create a new entity and have the liquidator provide a valuation on the business of the old entity from a registered valuer, and as above, the new entity buys the business from the liquidator. As long as the transaction is an “arms length” transaction, then the transition to the new entity is genuine and without issues. Again, the liquidator uses the funds from the sale of the old business to pay out the creditors, and the old corporation is de-registered. The good thing about this process, whichever you use, is that the former owner of the business is best placed to pay the highest value – someone who does not know the business would be taking a risk, and therefore will not pay as much for the old business. Now the caveats. If the director has carried on a long time with the debts, incurring new liabilities with no chance of paying them, he or she may be trading whilst insolvent, and may have exposed themselves to personal liability for the debts of the company. Accordingly, the sooner

What does it take for a species to survive and thrive? Make sure their habitat is suitable for those creatures we live among.

can get in, and you have something like slate on the floor where they can sunbake happily. They will eat any bugs that may also live in your house. Just carefully remove them using a dustpan and brush, because if you try to pick them up they may do a “cut and run”, where they shed their tail, which keeps on wriggling for quite some time, so thay can get away. Some people have seen the tail continue to jerk for up to five minutes. Happliy they will re-grow a new tail as soon as they are safe from harm.

Lets take lizards. The blue tongue lizard is to be found in Maroondah, and one of its best features, if you are lucky enough to have one or more in your garden, is that it eats snails, but you need to be sure you have not used snail pellets, or you may well kill the lizard by secondary poisoning. You can have my tail, but not me!

Lizards do not like to live under trees, especially if those trees have Kookaburras living in them.

As the days get longer and warmer, it's not just humans that are drawn out into the sunshine. Blue-tongued lizards are out and about, and it's often hard to tell if they are fighting or mating. Cats and dogs are absolutely a threat to lizards, and so you need to keep cats in cat runs, and the dog inside unless walking on a leash. If you know you have a lizard, fence off that section of the garden so the dog cannot get to it. What lizards like best is open sunny areas with tussoky grasses, plenty of leaf litter, scattered logs and rocks all of which they can hide under, or sunbake near, but out of view.

As for common garden skinks, they may well have been living in your wood pile if it is sheltered from rain. They also like to hide in bark, decaying logs on the ground ar even inside your house, if they

The significant risks that AI poses to global security are becoming clearer. That’s partly why UK prime minister Rishi Sunak is hosting other world leaders at the AI Safety summit on November 1-2 at the famous second world war codebreaking site Bletchley Park. Yet while the technology of AI is developing at an alarming pace, the real threat may come from governments themselves. The track record of AI development over the last 20 years provides a range of evidence of government misuse of the technology around the world. This includes excessive surveillance practices, the harnessing of AI for the spread of disinformation. Although recent focus has been on private companies that develop AI products, governments are not the impartial arbiters they might seem to be at this AI summit. Instead, they have played a role that’s just as integral to the precise way that AI has developed – and they will continue to. Militarising AI There are continual reports that the leading technological nations are entering into an AI arms race. No one state really started this race. Its development has been complex, and many groups – from inside and outside governments – have played a role. During the cold war, US intelligence agencies became interested in the use of artificial intelligence for surveillance, nuclear defence and for the automated interrogation of spies. It is therefore not surprising that in more recent years, the integration of AI into military capabilities has proceeded apace in other countries, such as the UK. Automated technologies developed for use in the war on terror have fed into the development of powerful AI-based military capabilities, including AI-powered drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) that are being deployed in current conflict zones. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, has declared that the country that leads in AI technology will rule the world. China has also declared its own intent to become an AI superpower. Surveillance states The other major concern here is the use of AI by governments in surveillance of their own societies. As governments have seen domestic threats to security develop,

that governments

choose to use it including from terrorism, they have increasingly deployed AI domestically to enhance the security of the state. In China, this has been taken to extreme degrees, with the use of facial recognition technologies, social media algorithms, and internet censorship to control and surveil populations, including in Xinjiang where AI forms an integral part of the oppression of the Uyghur population. But the west’s track record isn’t great either. In 2013, it was revealed that the US government had developed autonomous tools to collect and sift through huge amounts of data on people’s internet usage, ostensibly for counter terrorism. It was also reported that the UK government had access to these tools. As AI develops, its use in surveillance by governments is a major concern to privacy campaigners. Meanwhile, borders are policed by algorithms and facial recognition technologies, which are increasingly being deployed by domestic police forces. There are also wider concerns about “predictive policing”, the use of algorithms to predict crime hotspots (often in ethnic minority communities) which are then subject to extra policing effort. These recent and current trends suggest governments may not be able to resist the temptation to use increasingly sophisticated AI in ways that create concerns around surveillance. Governing AI? Despite the good intentions of the UK government to convene its safety summit and to become a world leader in the safe and responsible use of AI, the technology will require serious and sustained efforts at the international level for any kind of regulation to be effective. Governance mechanisms are beginning to emerge, with the US and EU recently introducing significant new regulation of AI.

But governing AI at the international level is fraught with difficulties. There will of course be states that sign up to AI regulation and then ignore them in practice. Western governments are also faced with arguments that overly strict regulation of AI will allow authoritarian states to fulfil their aspirations to take the lead on the technology. But allowing companies to “rush to release” new products risk unleashing systems that could have huge unforeseen consequences on society. Just look at how advanced text-generating AI such as ChatGPT could increase misinformation and propaganda. And not even the developers themselves understand exactly how advanced algorithms work. Puncturing this “black box” of AI technology will require sophisticated and sustained investment in testing and verification capabilities by national authorities. But the capabilities or the authorities don’t exist at the present time. The politics of fear We’re used to hearing from the news about a super-intelligent form of AI threatening human civilisation. But there are reasons to be wary of such a mindset. As my own research highlights, the “securitisation” of AI – that is, presenting technology as an existential threat – could be used as an excuse by governments to grab power, to misuse it themselves, or to take narrow self-interested approaches to AI that don’t harness the potential benefits it could confer on all people. Rishi Sunak’s AI summit would be a good opportunity to highlight that governments should keep the politics of fear out of efforts to bring AI under control.

Whoever said, ‘the more things change the more they stay the same’, was dead wrong when it comes to life insurance. While protection against adversity is always wise, your actual needs change as you move through different ages and stages of life. From when you take your first job and go out into the world, life insurance in all its many forms has a role to play. Life insurance falls into four main categories: • Income protection - Pays a monthly benefit if you are unable to work due to sickness or injury • Trauma - Pays a lump sum for a specific injury or illness • Total and permanent disability (TPD) - Pays a lump sum if you are permanently unable to work • Death - Pays a lump sum if you die or become terminally ill. Shifting needs Life insurance is like a bell curve – you need a low level of cover when you are setting out in life, growing to a high level in your middle years when your responsibilities and debts are at their peak and then possibly dropping back when you retire. The need for cover is ultimately about ensuring you have sufficient financial back-up should something go wrong. While superannuation offers most Australians some form of life insurance, it is generally a basic level of cover and may need topping up outside super. Each stage of life has its challenges, whether you are young and single, just married, starting a family, empty nesters or retiring. Whenever a major event occurs in your life, such as marriage or the birth of a child, you need to consider whether you have the right cover for your current needs. Young and single When you are starting out in life you may not need life cover, but what would happen if you were injured in a car crash and couldn’t work for six months? What happens when your sick leave runs out? How would you pay your rent, car loan, utility bills and basic living expenses? That’s when income protection insurance can be a lifeline.

Just married Once you are part of a couple you naturally want to protect each other’s wellbeing. If something happened to either one of you it could put tremendous strains on the other person. This is even more likely if you have bought a home and are saddled with a mortgage. Life insurance, income protection and trauma insurance can all help you protect your lifestyle. And both partners should seek cover because both are contributing. Starting a family Once children come on the scene, the need for life insurance is even greater. If something were to happen to you or your partner, then the financial burden could be significant. Who would look after the children? Could they stay at the same schools? Could your partner pay the mortgage on one salary? Income protection, life insurance, trauma insurance and total and permanent disability should all be considered. Once again, it’s important to make sure both partners are covered – even if one isn’t working, the costs associated with childcare and household tasks can be considerable. Empty nesters Just because the children have left home doesn’t mean you don’t still need access to money should something occur. Sure, you are probably at the peak of your earnings, but many empty nesters still have a mortgage. Even if you don’t, why put at risk all the wealth you and your partner have worked hard to build up for your retirement? Life insurance can help you protect these assets. Retirement Once you are retired, your need for life insurance may diminish. At this stage of life, you will probably have paid off your mortgage and your children are likely to be independent. As a result, insurance cover might just be a means to leave an inheritance for your children. Or you might want to have a policy to provide for your funeral. Life is forever changing, as are your insurance needs. It is not a one-size-fitsall. How to plan a gap year for grown ups It’s not just school leavers who dream of a gap year. Those of us who’ve been working for a decade or two (or more) may also long for a real break from career and commitments.

It does not even need to be a year – just enough of an extended break to reset and to take stock of what’s important to you. There‘s the opportunity to learn new skills or another language, explore different cultures or do a road trip around Australia. By planning ahead and making sure your break is not going to derail future financial goals, taking an extended period off work can be achievable. Dare to dream Start by finding an idea that might work for you. There are a host of websites that can help you to plan your adult gap year. They will provide tips and tricks for travel and where to find work (paid or volunteer). You might consider: •

Setting off around Australia. Taking off on an extended trip you can take the time along the way to really get to know parts of the country you’ve never seen. You could camp, caravan or stay in quirky country motels along the way.

Chasing the sun. Research affordable countries in warmer climates and set up in a beach shack. You will need to check rules on tourist visas.

Becoming a backpacker. There are plenty of cheap but comfortable accommodation options around the world to allow you to prolong your time away.

Taking a long walk. You can find much-loved and ancient tracks in Australia and around the world to expand your horizons. From the Great Himalayan Trail in Nepal – to Spain‘s Camino De Santiago, or one of Australia‘s iconic walks such as the Heysen Trail in South Australia.

The importance of planning Once you have established what your break will involve, work out a budget that takes account of the costs you will continue to incur (such as mortgage or loan repayments, insurance, utilities, car registration and rates) as well as your best estimates for accommodation, food, travel and spending money for your destination(s). Don‘t be daunted by an amount that may appear unachievable at first glance.

Work out how to save on costs when travelling. Some ideas include: •

Living like a local. Try swapping your house with someone in another part of the world. House swap websites match up homeowners looking to live in different places for varying periods of time. Alternatively, you could rent out your home while you are away and/or sign up to a housesitting website. Working differently. Your gap year might be more about doing something different than taking it easy. Find organisations and websites – such as http://workaway.info/ and http:// wwoof.com.au/ - that cater for working travellers. You could choose to work on farms around the world in return for food and board for example. Becoming a digital nomad. If manual labour isn‘t your thing, you could pack your computer and hook up to one of the many digital work websites – such as http://digitalnomadsworld. com/, http://upwork.com/ or http:// fiverr.com/. Many countries now encourage this trend by offering digital nomad visas.

Then, with your costs under control, and a clear goal in mind, it‘s time for a savings plan. You will want to reduce your current living expenses as much as possible to maximise savings and think about setting up a direct debit to a high interest savings account. Check the https://moneysmart. gov.au/saving/savings-goals-calculator to see how much you will need to save every month. If you have more than a few years to plan your gap year, you could look into some longer term savings and investment options such as shares, exchangetraded funds (ETFs), or term deposits. While a gap year is exciting, planning ahead financially is essential to ensure you don’t fall into debt. You also need to carefully consider how this could affect your long-term financial goals. You probably won’t be making super contributions, so this may impact your super balance and retirement plans.

Keeping your self accountable

It can be both empowering and a little uncomfortable to think that we are responsible for our successes – and failures.

Being willing to accept the consequences of our actions, choices or behaviours is not always easy. We’ve all at some time or another played the ‘blame game’. It’s so easy to look outward and blame others for our problems, hardships or the obstacles that are getting in the way of us achieving our goals and dreams. For example, it’s the company’s fault that I keep getting passed over for that promotion, my team at work is holding me back, my partner is not being supportive enough of me. The reality is there are always external forces at play that impact our lives and focussing on these external forces takes away our personal accountability. What does it mean to be accountable? Being personally accountable means taking responsibility for one’s own actions (or in some cases – lack of action!). It’s maintaining an ongoing commitment to yourself and what is important to you. Here are a few ways you can become more accountable: 1. Remove the roadblocks It all starts with your mindset. Choose to consciously embrace an accountable approach and recognise that you are the architect of your destiny. That means letting go of the excuses and recognising them for what they are - roadblocks that are holding you back from taking responsibility for your own actions. 2. Set goals It helps to know what you are trying to achieve – whether that be in your career, relationships or personal life. Take the time to set concrete goals, jot them down, and have a plan of how you will achieve them and in what timeframe. Start by setting yourself smaller goals as they will be easier to achieve in the beginning. Setting goals (even if they are small ones) and achieving them allows you to prove to yourself and others that you can and will hold yourself accountable. 3. Create your own opportunities Accountability empowers you to be in control of your actions in your personal life and career. You can create your own opportunities rather than passively allowing life to happen to you. Being accountable is about fulfilling your obligations to yourself as well as to others, so when you achieve what you’ve been aiming for, take time to recognise these milestones and celebrate them.

4. Take responsibility for your decisions Embrace the ‘good, the bad - and the ugly’ and accept the consequences of your actions, choices and behaviours, be they positive or negative. Revel in the positives, but don’t be afraid to admit and own up to your mistakes. One of the most powerful ways we learn is through making mistakes and taking responsibility for them. That means acknowledging that there is a problem, identifying your role in it and proposing a solution to minimise or eliminate the chances of it happening again. 5. Learn from your mistakes To reach your potential it’s necessary keep extending what you are capable of and taking risks and that means making mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up but think of what you would have done differently and what you’ve learned from the experience. 6. Ask for help The road to success does not have to be a lonely one. An accountability partner can be someone who shares your goals and supports you to keep your commitments or maintain progress on a desired goal. Having an accountability partner has been proven to increase your chances of success to an astonishing 95% if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed to.

Back to basics

Chart of Accounts You could say that the Chart of Accounts is where bookkeeping begins. When you start a business, one of the first things you are going to want to do is work out your Chart of Accounts. As mentioned in the October edition, the Chart of Accounts is a list of all the accounts you use to categorise your financial transactions to record them in your general ledger. They act a bit like a map, categorising your transaction types into assets, liabilities, equity, income, and expenses. You then break each category down into different Accounts. For example, the Assets section will have things like Cash at Bank, Accounts Receivable/ Debtors, and Inventory. The Income section might have Sales, Service fee and Interest received. The Liabilities section might have Mortgage, Accounts Payable/Creditors and GST collected. The Expenses section will have things like Wages, Marketing expenses, Electricity

and Rent. And the Equity section will have Capital and Drawings. Each account is also given a number and usually a brief description. Your bookkeeper will be able to help you set this up properly and will work with you to determine what Accounts you will need. Once you take the time at the beginning to set this Chart of Accounts up, you won’t need to change it much other than maybe adding another Account occasionally if you have a new transaction that doesn’t fit into any of the other accounts, such as a new subscription or a new debtor or creditor. Every transaction will have a source document. When you buy something, you will usually receive an invoice and/or a receipt. When you provide a service, you will give the client an invoice. A cheque butt can be a source document as can a credit note for an item you returned but did not receive a refund for. Many transactions, particularly those where you give or receive a product or service upfront, but don’t pay straightaway (resulting in a debtor/ creditor situation) may have more than one source document – an invoice at the

time of the initial transaction and a receipt when that service/product is paid for. Both source documents are required in the bookkeeping process particularly in the Accrual system (more on this in a future article). When you hand your source documents and bank statements to your bookkeeper, they will sort through all the transactions and assign them to an Account. With any luck, you are using some sort of accounting software such as Xero so this process will be a lot quicker (saving you dollars). Yes, there is a monthly fee to use the software, but this is generally tax deductible and will mean less time for your bookkeeper to sort through your transactions and make sense of them, and for your accountant to complete your tax return, hopefully resulting in a smaller fee. Once all the transactions are categorised using the Chart of Accounts, your bookkeeper will then put these into your General Journal and General Ledgers. I will cover these next month.

FORWARD PLANNING – YOUR CLUB’S LIFELINE By Peter Horton

Does your club have a business plan? – a plan that outlines what your club is looking to achieve into the future. Without one you could be seen as a rudderless ship, however with a business plan you will be in the position to move your club forward. Don’t waste time looking back – what worked successfully at your club a few years ago should be respectfully classified as ‘history’ – what you need now is a plan to move your club forward.

The common denominator is the word INCREASE with the common goal being both increased revenue and membership. Ask yourself this – is our club being run as a business? If the answer is NO then it is time for a re-think and most definitely the time your club needs to develop a business plan.

It is important to let your members know that your club is working on developing a business plan, a plan that will involve all aspects of your club – revenue, membership, sponsorship, subscription fees to name a few – and importantly seek input from your members.

Take the following into consideration:

The plan should look at reviewing your club’s revenue streams and then look at what you need to do to increase revenue, Increase membership Increase sponsorship Look at additional revenue streams.

A business plan will detail what your club plans to do in the coming years as well as providing the opportunity on an annual basis to undertake a review of the plan to determine if your club is ‘on track’.

Is your IT Managed Service Provider properly insured?

For some years now, insurers and their underwriting teams have been providing IT Liability policies for Information Technology contractors and service providers alike. The claims, which have emerged over time, have on occasion, fallen partially or fully outside of the scope of standard IT Policy wordings. This has left the insureds and their clients in a tough spot. If those contractors and service providers had also taken Cyber Insurance, in many cases those losses would have been covered. We are starting to see announcements like the one below in italics, where there are clearly identifiable exposures that the insurers are identifying, and are working to prevent.

My clients will often tell me that they use external Managed Service Providers and Cloud Hosting, and are always confident that any cyber risks created by the provider are covered on their behalf. The fact is, in many cases there is precious little information in the service contract confirming one way or the other if this cover is in place. As part of your own IT due diligence, you need to confirm if your provider has you properly covered, or if you are on your own if the provider exposes you to a cyber-incident which creates a loss for you or your business. Don’t assume you’re covered just because you have a contractor.

Opportunity: Contributing to super can help reduce your capital gains tax while boosting your retirement savings ACCOUNTANT By Warren Strybosch

Have you sold an asset this year that created a significant capital gain, such as an investment property or a share portfolio? Are you wanting to increase your chances of a financially comfortable retirement by investing funds in the concessionally taxed super system? Making a personal contribution to superannuation may not only boost your retirement savings. You could also have the opportunity to claim some or all of your contribution as a tax deduction, allowing you to reduce your taxable income in the year of contribution. Concessional contributions Concessional contributions (commonly referred to as pre-tax contributions) are typically those contributions made by your employer, such as superannuation guarantee and salary sacrifice contributions and your own personal contributions where a tax deduction is claimed. By claiming a tax deduction for your super contributions, only 15% tax is payable on the contributions going into the super fund compared to your marginal tax rate of up to 47%. This could mean a tax saving of 32 cents in every dollar contributed.

“15% tax instead of your marginal tax rate of up to 47%” For those on high incomes, where your total income and concessional contributions for the year exceed $250,000, an additional 15% tax may be payable on your tax deductible contributions (known as Division 293 tax). Even if this additional tax applies, 30% tax on contributions is still significantly less than the 47% top marginal tax rate.

Cap on concessional (deductible) contributions There is a limit on the amount of concessional contributions that may be made in a financial year. This limit is currently $27,500 per annum. Plus, new rules came into play from 1 July 2018 where, any unused concessional contribution cap that accrues from 1 July 2018 may be carried forward for a period of up to 5 years. This measure only applies to those people with a total superannuation balance of less than $500,000. Case Study Jon is 57 and recently sold an investment property which created a $100,000 capital gain. When added to his employment income, his assessable income for the year is $240,000. Jon has a total of $400,000 in superannuation, and his concessional contributions since 1 July 2018 are: Year

Building healthier

club cultures Knox and Maroondah City Councils have wrapped up a two-year pilot project to trial strategies for building healthier club cultures in community sports. With funding from VicHealth and working in partnership with Norwood Football Club and Knox Football Netball Club, the Raise the Bar project explored factors that shape club culture and what steps can be taken to foster friendly, safe and welcoming club environments. Project partner clubs were selected in consultation with the Eastern Football Netball League for their demonstrated commitment to good governance and a desire for continuous improvement. Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Kylie

Spears, said the project could help influence positive culture change in local sporting clubs and the wider community. “Council is proud to have been part of the Raise the Bar project, which has helped to create positive outcomes for the Norwood Football Club and its community,” Cr Spears said. “With sport being such a wonderful part of Maroondah’s community, it is hoped that the benefits of the project will have a ripple effect throughout the rest of the community and help encourage best practice in sporting clubs and community organisations, while also encouraging more people to get involved in sport at the local level - whether as players, volunteers or supporting members.”

Initiatives trialled through the project focused on the role of alcohol in club settings, strengthening club governance and the creation of sound strategies to move clubs towards their identified goals. The project has also provided tools to help communicate each club’s goals with its members, supporters and visitors. Norwood Football Club President, Mark Etherington, said the program has been a great success. “The Raise the Bar program has been an overwhelming success for our club. It has allowed the Norwood Football Club to not only enhance its operational governance and compliance, but also take the next step in our journey as one of the most respected community organisations in our league,” Mark said.

Local community groups and sporting clubs are enjoying enhanced facilities following Council projects that were formally opened on Friday 3 November. Federal Senator for Victoria Raff Ciccone, Federal Member for Deakin Michael Sukkar MP, and Mayor of the Day Councillor Rob Steane OAM formally opened lighting upgrades at the Croydon Park Oval and improvements to the 7th Ringwood Scout Hall at BJ Hubbard Reserve. They also attended a site visit to view the improvements nearly complete at the 1st Croydon Scout Hall at Hughes Park in Croydon.

Croydon Park Oval lighting upgrades The lighting infrastructure upgrades at Croydon Park Oval will make it safer for local sporting teams to train at night. President of Croydon Football Club, Anthony Thompson, said the upgrades will support growth at the club. “The new lighting upgrade will allow the Croydon Football Club to provide a high-quality facility for generations to come. “With first-class lighting facilities, we can grow our club by adding more junior programs for boys and girls as well as field a senior women’s team,” Anthony said.

The new and upgraded facilities will not only benefit current Scouts groups, but also a range of other community groups that use the space throughout the year, including local karate and calisthenics groups. The upgraded facilities have been planned to consider the needs of future generations and will allow young people of all ages, abilities and genders to enjoy the space for years to come. This project has been funded by the Australian Government in collaboration with Council and Scouts Victoria. 1st Croydon Hills Scout Hall at Hughes Park The 1st Croydon Hills Scout Hall at Hughes Park in Croydon North is currently undergoing an exciting building extension due to be completed shortly. This new extension will provide a fit-for-purpose space for young leaders of the future to connect, build life-long relationships and develop important social skills. The upgrades will not only benefit the current Scout groups but will also provide enjoyment for future generations of Scouts and encourage more young people to get involved in their community. This project has been funded by the Australian Government and Council in collaboration with Scouts Victoria.

“We also now have the ability to train at night throughout the darker seasons, providing more opportunities for young people to get active.” The upgrades will also future-proof the facility for the years to come, as the new LED lights illuminate the oval to 200 lux, which is above the current Australian requirements. This project has been funded by the Australian Government in collaboration with Council.

During October Ringwood U3A hosted a Resuscitate-a-mate education afternoon at Kevin Pratt Pavilion in Mullum Mullum Road (Norwood Football Oval) for our members. As it was so popular the first time we held the event it was decided to offer it again to our members. Everyone who attended was very impressed by the representative from Life Saving Victoria who delivered an entertaining but very educational presentation. All came away from the afternoon feeling that they were much better educated to cope if faced with an emergency or the need to make use of a Defibrillator. Ringwood U3A also held a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in November. It was a great way to meet the local community and to spread the word about U3A in general. It raised community awareness and also was a successful fund raising event. All our volunteers enjoyed sharing their shifts with their fellow members and chatting with all the Ringwood Bunnings customers. CONDITION OF RELEASE - RETIREMENT Superannuation benefits are generally preserved, meaning they cannot be accessed either as a lump sum, or be used to commence an income stream, until a condition of release has been met. The superannuation legislation provides for a number of conditions of release, depending on a superannuation fund member’s personal circumstances. The Fact Sheet considers the retirement condition of release. PRESERVATION AGE The retirement condition of release is met when a member retires from the work force after reaching their preservation age. Preservation age is based on the member’s date of birth. WHAT CONSTITUTES RETIREMENT? The retirement condition of release differs depending on when retirement actually occurs. RETIREMENT BEFORE TURNING 60 Where a member of a superannuation fund ceases to be gainfully employed before they reach their 60th birthday, retirement is taken to have occurred where: a. b.

They have ceased to be gainfully employed, before they turned 60, and They have no intention of becoming gainfully employment again on either a part-time or fulltime basis.

Both conditions need to be met for the condition of release to be satisfied. Part-time employment is gainful employment or selfemployment of between 10 and 30 hours per week, whereas fulltime employment is more than 30 hour per week. Retirement before reaching age 60 has an element of permanency around future employment. That is, to have met the condition of release, a member must intend never to become gainfully employed on a part-time or fulltime basis in the future. However, seeking to become gainfully employed in the future for less than 10 hours per week is acceptable. There may be other circumstances where a member genuinly has no intention of becoming gainfully employed again in the future however circumstances may change.

While the retirement condition of release prescribes there be no intention of resuming gainful employment, this intention is tested at the time the declaration of retirement is made. RETIREMENT BEFORE TURNING 60 Where employment ceases on or after reaching age 60, the requirements are simplified. A member aged 60 or older is taken to have met the retirement condition of release when an arrangement under which they were gainfully employed (or self-employed) has ceased, since they turned 60. Where a member ceases gainful employment after turning 60, it is not conditional upon them not re-entering the work force. If fact, a member aged 60 or older may cease working with an employer one day, and commence employment with a new employer the following day. Furthermore, where a person aged 60 or older has more than one employment position, merely ceasing one of those positions is sufficient for the retirement condition of release to apply to all superannuation benefits that have accrued to that point in time. RETIREMENT PRIOR TO AGE 60 BUT REQUESTING RELEASE OF FUNDS AFTER TURNING 60 Where employment ceases on or after reaching age 60, the requirements are simplified. There will be occassions when a member ceases to be gainfully employed before turning 60 years of age but they may not seek to access their superannuation benefits until after their 60th birthday. If the member had last ceased to be gainfuilly employed before they turned 60, they will need to not only have ceased to be gainfully employed, but also have had no intention of becoming gainfully employed again.

Individual superannuation funds may require proof that employment has ceased (e.g. a separation certificate from the employer), or they may rely on a signed declaration from the member.

However, if they had retired before turning 60 but had resumed gainful employment of a part-time or a fulltime basis, and subsequently ceased that employment arrangement after turning 60, the cessation of the second employment arrangement will be take as the trigger to satisy the retirement condition of release.

When benefits become unrestricted non-preserved, future investment earnings and future contributions will be preserved. For future benefits to be released, a subsequent condition of release will need to be satisfied.

ONCE UNPRESERVED, ALWAYS UNPRESERVED When the retirement condition of release has been met, a member of a superannuation fund should inform their fund they have met the condition of release. This should enable their preserved benefits to be classified as unrestricted nonpreserved benefits. Once a benefit becomes unrestricted nonpreserved, it will retain that status into the future even though the member’s circumstances may subsequently change and they may re-enter the workforce.

It is therefore possible that even though a condition of release has been met, and the member’s benefit has become unrestricted non-preserved, their superannuation account may include a subsequent preserved benefit. CAUTIONARY NOTE There will be times when members may wish to access their preserved superannuation benefits and may be tempted to contrive an arrangement in order to satisfy the retirement condition of release. Any arrangement to circumvent the preservation rules should be avoided. In the event that preserved superannuation benefits are accessed illegally, the member’s tax assessable income will be increased by the amount withdrawn, and will be taxed at their marginal tax rate. Significant penalties also apply to promotors of schemes designed to facilitate the early release of superannuation benefits.

Welcome Spencer Dunstone Spencer comes to Norwood from Donvale FC where he played all his junior and u19s football. A goal kicking machine he has a beautiful kick and is a mobile target up forward. Spence joins younger brother Fraser (u19s/seniors) and Elliott (u14) also a new recruit to Norwood. Looks like the Dunstone's are taking on their Landy cousins for dynasty rights at Norwood.
